VicRoads advised that advanced warning signs were in place to remind drivers of turning traffic onto Warburton Highway near these intersections.

Excluding the crash on 9 January, in the past five years there had been one serious injury crash at the intersection of Warburton Highway and Sunnyside Road and one at the intersection of Warburton Highway and Peters Road.

"I've been there 18 years on Bridgewater Road and there's been numerous accidents turning to Peters Road and up near Sunnyside."

He'd also like to see a traffic island midhighway to make crossing safer for pedestrians.

"A girl was hit at the next bus stop up at Woori Yallock," he said.

"It was lucky it was in a 60km zone.

"An island would be safer than them running to the middle of the highway, standing in the middle and then running over the next bit."

Warburton Highway users are calling for a safety boost following a serious crash in Seville East.

The Wednesday 19 January collision was the third that Sandy Ison had been involved in since 2010 at the same spot and in the same circumstances.

Her daughter, Kaylee Ison, said this was the worst.

"She was trapped," she said.

"The driver's side door wouldn't open so they had to cut the roof off and get her out."

Sandy, 50, suffered a cut to her scalp that required eight staples, a fractured rib, lots of bruising, a few other cuts and bad whiplash.

She spent three days in hospital.

Sandy had been returning to her Joyce Road home about 4.30pm.

"She was waiting for the oncoming traffic to go and then someone came up behind her," Kaylee said.

"The first person went around her."

It's alleged another driver then crashed into Sandy's car and pushed it into the roadside embankment.

"Each of our neighbours have also had similar accidents in this spot, although Mum's has been the worst so far," Kaylee said.

"We have petitioned and continually harassed VicRoads to do something, but have had no positive response."

She'd like to see traffic slowed from the current 90 kilometre limit and a dedicated turning lane.

"Something needs to happen before someone gets more seriously injured," she said.

Mail readers reached out on our Facebook page to express their concerns about the Warburton Highway intersections with the Sunnyside, Joyce, Stuart and Peters roads.

Linda said the intersections were on top of a crest with limited vision.

Joel Supple said he'd been fighting for safety improvements for four years.

Considering how long there isn’t going to be a playground in Queens Park for (well over 12 months) because of the construction of a new area (it could be longer depending on the weather and other variables) that only leaves the playground at the railway station as an option for locals and tourists alike in the actual township.

I’ve taken my grandson there a couple of times recently.

There is no shade whatsoever.

I think the council needs to seriously consider installing a shade sail.

Even on a lovely summer day when the temperature isn’t too high, the actual playground equipment is far too hot to use.

It’s difficult explaining to a two-year-old that he can’t play on the swings or the slide because it’s far too hot to sit on a black rubber swing that’s been in the sun since day break.

I’m not aware if the council and Yarra Valley Railway (YVR) have entered any agreement of the public using their toilets while there’s no playground at Queens Park.

Even if some portable toilets when placed on site (perhaps public toilets for that park should be put into next yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s budget) if this issue isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t addressed, where do you expect members of the public to go to the toilet for the next 12 months?

Dam park to close Melbourne Water will soon upgrade the Upper Yarra Reservoir dam.

It said the project was an important initiative for residents of Warburton, Reefton, McMahons Creek and the Melbourne metropolitan area, as it would ensure the dam wall's continued integrity and stability.

Melbourne Water said the reservoir could then continue to supply drinking water for Melburnians.

The dam is about 5 kilometres east of Reefton, is an important link between the Thomson Reservoir and the water supply network, and was built in 1957.

"Melbourne Water regularly reviews the risk associated with its water supply dams," a statement said.

"Understanding the risk allows us to prioritise

maintenance and upgrade works as necessary.

"We apply the best Australian and international engineering practices in the design, management and operation of dams.

"This upgrade is an important project to ensure Upper Yarra Dam continues to operate at its best.

"This dam safety upgrade will apply current engineering practice, to provide for the safe ongoing operation of the dam."

Minor works are due to start in March and full construction works will start from June.

Melbourne Water expects the works to be completed over two summer phases, by mid-2021.

"The project will install a sand filter on the downstream side of the embankment crest for its full length," the statement said.

"This acts to protect the clay core of the

embankment from erosion, and will also allow any seepage through the embankment to be monitored."

The upgrade will involve excavating a trench along the crest of the wall; backfilling the trench with a new sand filter; fencing off and closure of the works area.

The project will close the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park from June until mid-2021, bring heavy vehicle truck movements along the Warburton Highway, and include improvements to the amenities within the campground.

"Some vegetation removal will be required to complete the works," the statement said.

"Vegetation removal will be undertaken with the supervision of a qualified arborist and wildlife handler and in accordance with statutory requirements."

Yarra Ranges fire brigades have reflected on the deadly Black Friday bushfires, 80 years on.

Coldstream CFA said on its Facebook page that high temperatures and strong winds on 13 January 1939 followed years of drought.

On 8 January, two people died in the Toolangi State Forest, the post said.

"By 10 January, almost all the forests in the Great Dividing Range were on fire," the brigade said.

There was a large outbreak at Powelltown.

On Black Friday, the temperature reached 44.7 degrees with very low humidity levels.

Narbethong was among the places fire completely destroyed on the day.

"The fires claimed 36 lives in Victoria on Black Friday while total number of deaths across January was 71," Coldstream CFA said.

"More than 700 homes, 69 sawmills, many businesses, farms and other buildings ... were lost.

"A Royal Commission for the Black Friday bushfires played a significant role in increasing bushfire awareness and prevention throughout Australia."

The Wesburn/Millgrove CFA captain wrote on the brigade's Facebook page that local man Des Morrish, who died last year, told of a fire that was uncontrollable and unstoppable.

"This year we have the 10th anniversary of Black Saturday - another uncontrollable and unstoppable wildfire," the captain said.

"The lives and property that have been lost over the last 100 years to wildfires in the Yarra Valley and Victoria are truly unbelievable and it reminds us that history really can repeat itself.

"Take a moment to think about the week's upcoming weather.

"Are you truly prepared for what may get thrown your way?"

The Seville Rural Fire Brigade said it formed as a direct result of the Black Friday bushfires.

"The Seville Chamber of Commerce voted to form the Seville volunteer fire brigade in 1940 and donated the initial funds to get them started," a post on the brigade's Facebook page said.

"The official formation happened in 1941.

The CFA was then formed in 1945 to co-ordinate all the newly-formed brigades."

"I hope someone will come in and buy the building and the whole collection but that's probably not going to happen. I obviously have to return anything that's not mine, and I think the rest will go to auction."

Police arrested a Don Valley driver after he failed to stop when officers asked him to in November.

They appealed for public information in relation to the Lysterfield incident, and the community reported several sightings of the vehicle in the following months.

On Tuesday 8 January, Knox CIU members arrested a 28-year-old Don Valley man in Croydon.

They charged him with a number of criminal and traffic offences relating to the matter including theft of a motor vehicle, drug possession, reckless conduct, failing to stop when requested to do so by police, driving at a dangerous speed and in a dangerous manner, speeding and failing to obey traffic lights.

The man was remanded in custody to face court again at a future date.

Police thanked everyone who responded to their appeal and provided information that assisted in the arrest.

Moving house is difficult so spare a thought for Mr Bessell, the bootmaker of Walhalla, who moved his entire, very large, building to Warburton around 100 years ago.

The building is about to enter its next phase with owner, Valda Street, planning on closing the gallery and museum she created there and selling the building.

"I've owned the building for nearly 40 years and it had been a boot shop before that," she said. "I was walking up the street and there was a little 'For Sale' sign out the front so I bought it.

"I grew up near Walhalla and happened to be reading a book about where the buildings went after it became a ghost town, so I wrote to the author. Two years later a man from the Walhalla association knocked on my door and said my building came from there."

"Around five years ago I decided perhaps the building was part of Warburtons history and I should restore it."

During the renovations the builder discovered an original office door and set about building an office to house Valda's collection of memorabilia from her 15 years as secretary to Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop.

"So I had a couple of showcases made and when the fellow delivered them I filled them straight away so I ordered some more and eventually I filled the place up. I do it because it keeps me amused, I love all my stuff and other people seem to enjoy seeing it too."

After forty years of life in Warburton, she said that not much had changed in the town.

"Well I haven't seen a great lot of change.

There has probably not been enough change and I don't think its been thriving since the train stopped. Warburton stopped then.

"It's one thing to have a cup of coffee or a meal but you really need something a little bit meatier that tells visitors about the town. For that reason I feel sad it's going because it gives them a little picture of Warburton that they wouldn't have got otherwise.

A decade after the fires

By Mayor Tony Stevenson Thursday 7 February will mark 10 years since the start of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires - the day many of us refer to as Black Saturday.

The fires, of which there were hundreds around the state, had a devastating and unprecedented impact on the Yarra Ranges over about a month.

Whether you were in the Yarra Ranges in February 2009 or came here after, the Black Saturday bushfires had a flow-on effect into so many aspects of people's lives across our communities.

Sadly, along with the people who tragically lost their lives, there are many people whose lives have been shaped by this event and some who are still feeling the impact today.

The council will be hosting an event to commemorate the anniversary of the 2009

The anniversaries of such traumatic events can be difficult, no matter how directly or indirectly you were exposed to it.

I encourage anyone who is having a tough time in the lead-up to this anniversary to speak to friends, co-workers and loved ones, or to contact a mental health professional or support services such as Lifeline on 13 11 14 to ensure they get the support they need.

Be aware that people around you might also be having a tough time and need some extra support during this time.

This period is a time to reflect and remember those who lost their lives in the bushfires, and learn about how the fires changed the lives of many, and how communities have rebuilt.

People should seek professional help from a mental health professional in the lead-up to

and during the anniversary period if they: - are feeling overwhelmed and are unable to handle any intense feelings or physical sensations; - have physical stress symptoms; - are re-experiencing vivid flashbacks of the event and are becoming extremely distressed; - find that relationships with family and friends are suffering; - are becoming accident-prone and using more alcohol or drugs; or - are experiencing other significant changes in their behaviour that would not normally occur.

People should also be aware of anyone in their personal or professional lives experiencing the above symptoms during this period.

Bushfire milestone

By Casey Neill The fear in people's voices is what Stacey Bennett remembers most vividly about Black Saturday.

Ten years on, she'll be reflecting on how everyone came together after the catastrophic event.

Ms Bennett will remember the people who helped the suffering communities on the day and in the weeks and months after.

She's determined to show those affected that they haven't been forgotten, even a decade down the track.

She'll again host the Black Saturday Remembrance Cruise, this year on Saturday 9 February.

Cars will depart Yarra Glen Recreation Reserve on the Melba Highway at 1pm and arrive at the Healesville Railway Precinct on Healesville-Kinglake Road at 2pm.

There'll be a remembrance ceremony at 3pm. It's $10 per vehicle to participate, with all funds going to the CFA. "We haven't forgotten the people up there that are still suffering," Ms Bennett said.

"We still remember and we still are there for each other.

"It's a way of the community gathering and reflecting.

"I think it's nice that people have their own reflection time in their cars as they travel.

"They can have their quiet time and their own space with their loved ones, and then we get to the end and we're all together."

The cruise started as a tribute to her friend Kate Ansett, who died in her Toolangi home on 7 February 2009.

"She had a love for old cars," Ms Bennett said.

The first cruise was eight years ago.

"We never expected it to be as big as what it was," she said.

"Everyone seemed to love it and want to be part of it.

"I know it means a lot to other people so that's why I continue to do it.

"I've had people come and tell me so many different stories about their personal tragedies from the fires.

"People tell you that this is the first time they might have taken the car they used to escape the fires.

"They only ever bring it out to this event and then it gets parked away again."

She said this year wouldn't be a lot different, despite the milestone it will mark.

"It's definitely more significant, and people

are looking for remembrance ceremonies," Ms Bennett said.

"We've always wanted to keep it basic, keep it the same, but it definitely feels different.

"The 10th feels more important."

The cruise is open to all vehicles - even the family car - and people don't have to take part in the procession to come along to the ceremony.

"We've had people turn up in mini buses," she said.

"It could be 800 vehicles altogether. It's always a very hard thing to gauge.

"There'll be about 2000 people."

Ms Bennett lives in Bendigo now, but lived in Healesville on Black Saturday.

"We were inside and then I remember going outside and it was dark, hot, windy," she said.

"I remember turning the radio on and just hearing people crying and yelling for help.

"We knew it was bad then."

A state commemoration service will mark 10 years since the Black Saturday bushfires. The State Government event will take place on Monday 4 February at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens, with more details to come.

“Holding this commemoration on this day allows for individuals to have time for themselves or attend other community events during the week,” Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville said.

She said organisers had been speaking with family and friends of those who died, the bushfire-affected communities, and emergency services personnel about the commemoration service and other initiatives to ensure they met community expectations.

“We need to honour those who died, those who lost homes and those brave men and women who fought to save lives and homes,” she said.

Yarra Ranges Council will host a commemoration event on Thursday 7 February at 5.30pm at McKenzie Reserve in Yarra Glen. Refreshments and ice cream will be available at the event, and visitors are encouraged to bring a picnic.

Listening to him talk it is clear that he has a strong ethic of being involved and giving back, something he said he learnt about when growing up. "My dad was in the army so I went to 25 different schools. Sport was a good way to get involved in the community and integrate in new places."

He said when his two sons started playing sport in Healesville he got involved with their teams. "I enjoy and believe strongly in volunteering and I've tried to contribute at various levels in all sorts of sporting clubs in the district.

"I was a bit of a runner and tried triathlon and when my boys took up the sport I was their transport. Rather than just standing around watching them I thought I could be an official.

"I did a course around seven years ago and started officiating at the local triathlons

"At the World Championships we had 6000 athletes and 75 officials from 35 countries to

run the seven races. At the local level races are all about the athletes and our role is to make sure the races are safe, run fairly and people have fun.

When asked about reaching the final four, he said he was surprised but really happy that his sport was getting recognition. "Now I have reached this level I am really keen on mentoring and fostering more officials to enter and stay in the sport. " For me the best part is the challenge of bringing together a group of officials and turning them into a successful team and supporting them to carry out their roles, that's what I really enjoy."

He also is involved with Paratriathletes and in February will be officiating at the International Paratriathlon World Cup in Tasmania. "We have big contingent of intellectually handicapped athletes so as officials we really look after them and make sure they have a good time."

Victoria Legal Aid is advising residents in bushfire-prone areas to include a checklist to help in the aftermath of disaster in their plans.

Joel Townsend is a volunteer for Disaster Legal Help Victoria, a legal sector collaboration that responds to bushfire, flood and other disasters in Victoria.

He has experience working with victims of disasters, including the Black Saturday fires.

"It's not a pleasant thought but if you do lose your home and belongings, you'll need to be prepared to answer some legal questions - and that's where we come in," Mr Townsend said.

"The main legal problems people encounter are around insurance claims, property damage and accommodation issues."

He urged people to make sure their insurance was up to date ad had the right cover for fire; be prepared to lodge a claim soon after the event; get advice on accommodation or tenancy issues; keep a list of key contacts they might need for dealing with recovery from a disaster; and prepare an important documents kit, including a description of their home and a list of their valuables.

Mr Townsend said people should include the Disaster Legal Help Victoria 1800 113 432 number in their emergency contact list, along with numbers for their insurance company, bank, doctor, Centrelink, local council and power company.

"It makes things easier when you are dealing with companies and governments after a disaster if all of your important documents and account numbers, as well as wills and passports, are together in your kit," he said.

Volunteer lawyers help in recovery centres and at follow-up sessions six to eight weeks after a disaster.

They are trained in insurance law and dispute resolution, and aim to resolve insurance disputes as quickly as possible.

New Yarra Ranges CEO

Bleak mysteries from Wesburn

By Michael Doran Wesburn author and illustrator, David Schembri, has released his second book of short-stories, Beneath the Ferny Tree. This follows his 2014 work, Unearthly Fables, and continues his work in the horror genre.

"Horror is my default setting when I write a story and at times I border on sci-fi and satire," he said. "The new book is a collection of self-contained stories with a connecting piece of poetry."

"I have been living in Wesburn with my wife for the last 16 years or so. We both love the wide-open spaces of the Yarra Valley and that's why we left the city to settle here.

"We were city people but with the beauty of the landscape as a backdrop we thought we could really grow as a couple up here, and we are still growing."

He said that he gets his inspiration for the horror stories from a variety of places, including his own dreams. "The ideas vary a lot and often come to me from bad things I read or movies I watch. Also I get ideas from history I have read about and become hooked on as a subject."

In Beneath the Ferny Tree one of the stories is about the African slave trade to the Americas and leaves the reader to discover where the monsters lay on the slaver ship riding the high seas of the Atlantic.

There is a story around the horror of wartorn Germany and another is based in a futuristic prison where the main character is haunted by his past and desperate for a

"I write horror stories but they are not about the sort of chainsaw-wielding madman a lot of

people associate with horror. Often the stories are premised on the element of building fear and suspense into the emotion of the story."

Yarra Ranges Council will welcome a new CEO to its helm next month.

Councillors voted unanimously to appoint Tammi Rose to the position at their Tuesday 18 December meeting.

She'll fill the role for four years from Monday 4 February.

Mayor Tony Stevenson said Ms Rose brought a wealth of experience in a range of senior roles, in both inner metropolitan and rural councils.

She is Hobsons Bay Council's corporate services director, and also took on an acting CEO role there last year.

"With more than 18 years of local government experience in leading teams and driving innovation, Tammi is well qualified to ensure our organisation continues to service our diverse communities, sustain our natural environment and support growth in local jobs," Cr Stevenson said.

"With a Masters in organisational development and professional qualifications as an accountant (CPA), Tammi is well placed to continue and build on the current direction of our organisation.

"Council is excited by the energy, ideas and experience Tammi brings to Yarra Ranges."

Ms Rose said she was excited about the challenge of leading the organisation as it continued its drive to be more efficient and innovative in delivering services.

"Yarra Ranges has an exciting future ahead, and it will be a privilege to work with the community, councillors and the organisation to move the municipality to another level of liveability, ensuring it is agile and future-proofed to support the communities of tomorrow as well as today."

Ms Rose replaces Glen Patterson, who announced his departure late last year to take on the City of Casey CEO position.

Rodeo back in the valley

By Michael Doran The cowboys and bucking broncos are back in town with the return of the Yarra Valley Rodeo on January 19, being held this year at Yarra Glen Racecourse. Now in its fourth year this is the only rodeo in the Yarra Valley and with the funds raised going to various charities it is indeed a worthy way to kick off the new year.

The fast and furious action will come from barrel racing, team roping, bronc and bull riding with plenty of carnival fun activities for the younger cowboys and cowgirls. All the action can be viewed on a coloured big-screen that will light up the night sky when darkness falls. The rodeo action kicks-off at 4.30pm but the gates open two hours earlier so there is time to enjoy all the other family oriented activities on offer.

Merchandise stalls, rides, and live music entertainment are part of the day with plenty of food and refreshments available, including a licensed bar but BYO alcohol is not permitted. Tickets, which have been on-sale since November, will be available at the gate but it is recommended that patrons pre-book online to avoid any disappointment on the day.

Premium seating is in the Ringside and Grandstand areas and general admission patrons are advised to bring their own seating and think about protection from the sun or the elements in the open-air areas. For health and safety reasons and to ensure the comfort of all visitors the size of the crowd is restricted and no dogs can be admitted to the rodeo.

Call to all Junior Rangers Parks Victoria is inviting children and their families to have fun learning about nature by joining Junior Ranger activities this school holidays.

Park rangers host the free program which offers activities for children aged 6 to 12 and their families.

It is designed to get kids outdoors and teach them about Victoria's wonderful plants, wildlife and amazing natural and cultural heritage, and this season also sees a great expansion for the number of activities available in the area, with 25 activities available in the Yarra Ranges National Park.

Six-year-old Anna Wood has been to five Junior Rangers activities and said she looks forward to them every school holidays.

"I love being a Junior Ranger because I get to learn hands-on about nature," she said.

"My favourite experience was feeding a Tawny Frogmouth some dead chicken at Serendip Sanctuary."

A number of programs are being run across the Yarra Ranges these holidays, including an alpine treasure hunt and discovery walk at Lake Mountain. The treasure hunt sees you head out into nature to discover colours, patterns, and textures of a diverse alpine environment.

Families can also explore the wonders of the rainforest at Mt Donna Buang's Rainforest Gallery.

Park ranger Julia Pickwith said the program gives kids and parents the chance to explore and learn about animals and nature in their local area.

"It's one of those beautiful tactile experiences - the kids can see what's effectively the tallest plant in Australia and tallest moss in the same day."

"We encourage kids to pick stuff up, smell stuff - provided they put everything back - we like to promote minimal impact ... take home photos and leave only footprints."

Bullock delivers a powerful central performance as Malorie, conveying a steely, reserved compassion. The characters are simplistic but engaging, and Malorie develops an adversarial friendship with Douglas (John Malkovich), who eventually redeems himself from his relentless bitterness.

Beyond some heavy-handed dialogue, the main problems in Bird Box are structural.

While the flashbacks and present-day segments ultimately dovetail together in satisfying ways, the present segments diminish the tension of the flashbacks; if Malorie and her children are alive in the present, then obviously nothing can harm them in the flashbacks.

The film would have been more suspenseful as a whole if structured in two discreet acts, but Bird Box is still a disquieting bare-bones horror film, and is available for streaming on Netflix.

Athletics back on track Athletics returned for 2019 last Saturday as Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes spread themselves far and wide around Victoria.

Its Little Athletics athletes returned to Morrison Reserve for a fun morning of track and field.

There were plenty of personal bests and welcome back hugs and smiles.

Glenhuntly and Werribee athletics tracks

were the venues for our senior athletics members competing in AV Shield competition.

With the likelihood that all five of the Yarra Ranges teams will qualify, the club said it was great to see the big numbers of members competing.

Only three rounds remain before the muchanticipated Shield Final.

The club also had many current and past members compete in the Two Bays Trail race finishing at Cape Schanck Lighthouse.

Congratulations went to Lauren Starr for her second-place finish in the 28 kilometre race.

A big thanks went to Bryan Ackerly, Susan and Lee Taylor, James Anderson, Jamie and Mia Strudley, Graham Coutts and Katie, Zoe and Lily Clarke who manned the carpark to generate valuable funds for the club.

Next week the club will welcome Croydon Little Athletics to its track for a morning of interclub competition.

This promises to be a lot of fun as the club

gets the opportunity to compete alongside athletes it doesn't normally get to.

Yarra Ranges seniors will travel to Box Hill or Doncaster for round 10 of AV Shield.

Training is on every Tuesday and Thursday night from 6pm.

It's not too late to get involved in either Little Athletics or the senior competition with Athletics Victoria.

If you have experience in the operation of two-way radios and communication equipment, along with safe and effective vehicle driving skills with training and experience in 4WD, defensive driving and minor vehicle maintenance, you are strongly encouraged to apply.

You may be required to operate from various tower locations within a district for both emergency response and planned burning activities therefore strong local knowledge would be advantageous along with mapping skills and an understanding of fire behaviour. Seville surprises

By Chris Anderson With just six rounds remaining before finals, the race is on in earnest for post-season action in the Yarra Valley.

In DJ Strachan Shield, it was last-placed Seville that reminded everyone the side was not a spent force this season, closing to within one game of the top four with an impressive victory against Wandin.

Wandin's form leading into Christmas had been impressive and the side had quickly established itself in the top four, while Seville had struggled to post wins despite some improvement across the season.

Seville batted first in this contest and, as has been their way this season, battled to gain significant momentum due to regular wickets.

The Blues batted out their 40 overs despite only four batsmen scoring double figures.

Andy Kay and Caleb Frankovic would provide some staunch resistance at the top of the order, but wickets would continue to fall with little progress.

With a score around 100 looming, it would come down to the experienced heads of Rod Pearce and Daniel Healy to push the score to a competitive 9/135 to keep the home side in the contest.

The Wandin bowlers shared the honours in a fairly even display with Luke Chandler, Jamie Oakley and Rob Henderson all bagging two wickets a piece.

Despite gifting their opponents 27 runs through extras, Wandin would've been fairly comfortable with proceedings at the break, and going on form would've been confident of chasing the total.

Maybe they were a fraction too comfortable.

From the moment the steady hand of Marcus Smith netted three early wickets, it seemed Wandin were never in the hunt in an excellent display of bowling from Seville.

All the Blues who turned their hands to bowling had some success as they rolled through the Bulldogs line up inside 26 overs for a paltry 73 runs.

Mark Sandfort started the new year in style with three wickets to join Smith at the top of the wicket takers.

Tim Thorne was the only batsman to contribute to the chase, but a top score of 21 isn't going to cut it in the top grade.

At the other end of the scale, the Christmas break didn't slow Mount Evelyn's impressive undefeated season as they made short work of Warburton-Millgrove on the road.

The Burras won the toss and elected to bat in excellent conditions, but found themselves in early trouble courtesy of an early couple of wickets to veteran Chris Anderson.

Sensing his team losing a grip on the contest, Burras mainstay Liam Barnard asserted himself on the game.

With some blistering strokeplay, not only did he get the scoreboard moving in the right direction but he put a little pressure back on the Mount Evelyn bowlers who haven't been challenged too often this season.

His innings was cut short for an enterprising 40 with the score on 3/53, and from there

the innings struggled to regain momentum.

Gareth Fraser (2/30) and Chad Witherdin (3/9) heaped the pressure on the middle to lower order of the Warburton-Millgrove batting line up, and despite some gritty batting from Ben Lever (23) with the tail, the innings crawled to a disappointing 104.

The Mounters cantered to the victory target inside 16 overs without the loss of a wicket.

Jesse Fraser's remarkable season continued as his innings of 44 not out put his season record at 373 runs at an average of 124, while his partner in crime, Jon O'Donnell, is starting to find his feet with 48 not out to round out a tidy unbeaten century partnership.

In the final game of the round, Yarra Junction had a solid victory against a hapless Healesville outfit.

Yarra Junction won the toss and elected to put a score on the board, and they managed the task well.

From the word go, captain Kevin Bomford led his team from the front.

His explosive approach and rapid scoring was well supported with some assured batting from Marcel Kocher at the other end.

A 60-run opening partnership put the Eagles on the right track.

The pair fell in quick succession to the hand of Healesville captain Ash Hamer and this threatened to derail the innings, but Matt Mallick (47) and Andy Cowan (31) would have nothing of it.

The pair reeled off another significant partnership, this time 81 runs to take the game away from the Bloods.

Their partnership would take their team deep into the innings and allow it to flourish to a handy total of 5/179.

Healesville would have to be at their best to chase down this total, but with Nick Bark removing the openers before the score had reached double figures, the task would prove to be too difficult.

Max Minney and Dale Senior would do well to re-establish the innings and give it some momentum, but when the pair fell, closely followed by Hamer, before the score had reached 50, all hope had been effectively snuffed out.

Dan Ebbels and Jordan Poynton would stall the Eagles' progress with some disciplined batting, showing up their more experienced counterparts and giving the Healesville faithful some joy on an otherwise fruitless day.

Nick Bark would capture another couple of late wickets to boost his wicket tally to four, Healesville would see out their overs, and in the end it was a comfortable 55-run victory for the home side and some regained momentum for the run home to finals.

With just two games separating second and sixth, the race is well and truly on, and Round 11 shapes as a crucial one-day fixture before the toil of two day cricket restarts.

Healesville will host Seville in a fixture that could mean curtains for the losing team, while the winners might find themselves inside the top four.

Healesville has battled inconsistency in performance and a steady line up which has

cost it any momentum this season.

A hungry Seville looks set to pounce with finals a real possibility and could sense an ideal opportunity to finally close the gap.

With both teams struggling to find runs, a season-defining innings or partnership could be the recipe for success for both teams.

Mount Evelyn will host Yarra Junction and the Eagles need a big performance to follow their round 10 victory.

Traditionally, Mount Evelyn has struggled against the Eagles' disciplined attack and if the visitors could find some more runs as they did on the weekend, they could find themselves up to their eyeballs in this contest.

Mount Evelyn would be loath to give up its dominance and will be hell bent on staying undefeated and will prove hard to pass.

The final game of the round will see Wandin host Warburton-Millgrove and much lies on victory in this clash.

For Wandin, a win would straighten up their season and a chance to quickly move on from the weekend's poor result, while WarburtonMillgrove need to start finding some momentum if they are to feature in a fifth Grand Final on the trot.

A loss for either would be a second loss on the trot in 2019 and a significant ding in confidence.

After being close at the break 40/41, Healesville fell away after half time to be comfortably beaten 74/101.

Thrilling win In a thrilling finish against Pakenham 1 at home, Warburton Bowls Club's number one side came from behind to win 83 to 82.

It came down to the last end of the game.

Warburton needed three shots to win and S. Lee-Tet's rink did just that.

Rink scores were J. Van Der Zweep 12/36, S. LeeTet 25/16, A. Holmes 24/11 and J. Brookes 22/19.

The side will play Mulgrave CC 1 away this week as it looks to continue its steady improvement across all rinks.

Top scores

Greyhounds racing The Healesville Greyhound Association had a very busy start to the year, with three race meetings on the first weekend of the 2019.

Racing on Thursday 3 January for the first meeting attracted a great crowd, with many holiday-makers attending the track to enjoy the club's facilities and the exciting racing on offer.

The normal Friday meeting was transferred to Saturday morning due to the extreme weather across Victoria.

Everyone was up bright and early with racing starting at 9.07am.

The day kicked off with a barbecue breakfast and another 12 action-packed races.

The association backed up again with another full race card the following day, the main meeting of the weekend.

There was some great racing, with some very smart greyhounds showing the crowd what they did best.

Over the three days, dogs contested 36 races and training honours went to the Superior Race Team, headed by trainer Joyce Condon and her son David.

Between the pair and their team of helpers they prepared 22 runners for six individual winners and five minor placed runners.

Makayla Brown from Lara was trackside enjoying her school holidays with her dad and their greyhound Mayor Digby.

She was very excited when they won the second last event of the day.

Racing is held at the Don Road Sporting Complex every Friday and Sunday.

Gates open from 11.00am.

Entry is free and there are canteen, bar and TAB facilities on-course.

There will be another three-day racing weekend to celebrate the Australia Day Public Holiday with lots of activities for the last weekend of the school holidays.

At this time of the year, some terrific scores are frequent.

Custom-built for the road Halen Vans are builders of fully custom-built off-road caravans in Lilydale.

The company was established in 2011 when Jason Francis, after many years in the industry, together with two other partners, decided to go out on his own.

Jason, a mad Van Halen fan, decided that as a tribute to his idols the company name would have to be Halen Vans.

All Halen Vans are custom-built.

Halen Vans works with its customer to come up with a design that suits their individual needs and customers are fully involved with the build process.

From when the chassis arrives, customers go in and speak to qualified cabinet makers about their design needs and cabinetry is made to suit.

All vans are fully off-road with choices of independent trailing arm or air bag s suspension, the latter being popular due the fact that you can level the van from left to right and up and down with the flick of a switch.

They are fully self-sufficient with solar panels and the choice of either lead crystal or lithium batteries.

Last year, Jason and his wife Bec took their van with four of their customers vans and did the Tanami Track, a heavily corrugated track between Alice Springs, NT, and Halls Creek, WA. The vans handled the conditions beautifully and also had the convenience of being able to use all their appliances including the airconditioner without being plugged into power or using a generator.

The vans were equipped with solar panels and inverters to utilise the sun's energy to charge the batteries, therefore power was not an issue.

Halen Vans also does all servicing and repairs of all makes and models of vans.
