Den’s sad demise By Rowan Forster The iconic Lion's Den has been completely demolished in what has been described as a "sheer act of mass destruction", despite Cardinia Shire promising to preserve the bulk of the premises. In November, councillors opted to renovate and transform the site into a thriving education space, leasing the site to Community College Gippsland (CCG) under a 15-year agreement. Under the arrangement, the facility's change rooms were set to be demolished while the social club was set to be maintained. However, those passing Henry Road in January made the grim discovery that the building had been completely torn down. The Gazette understands that while contractors were demolishing the change rooms, the rest of the building began to collapse and was deemed "unsafe". Community stalwart and long-time secretary of the Pakenham Football Club Graham Treloar was devastated to learn of the building's demise. He refuted concerns about the Lion's Den's structural integrity. "This is a bloody disgrace - I am in shock," he said. "This is a sheer act of mass destruction. "I think they always wanted to pull it down and it's a great waste and extremely disappointing." "I drove past when the change rooms were down, stopped the car and went for a look - there was no way the other rooms would crumble." Opening in 1982, the social rooms backed onto a canteen used by the football and netball clubs. The building was eventually extended to include a kitchen and function room, as well as a pokies venue. For many, the Lion's Den has a deep connection with Pakenham's past - representing the inception of today's Pakenham Football Club. It has also left the council's lease agreement with CCG in the lurch. CCG were set to bankroll $300,000 of the $681,000 required to revitalise the building. The contribution will be considered as an offset to the rental for the first 10 years.

Prior, the site had been earmarked for complete demolition by council officers. Jillian Ronald, who had rallied to save the building from destruction, said she was extremely disappointed. "I worked hard a couple of years ago to save this building from destruction - presenting a submission, lobbying councillors, investigating its history and community importance," she said. " I wanted it available to be used by the community. "So sad to lose another piece of local history." Councillor Michael Schilling, who fought to have the iconic site preserved, was devastated by the outcome.

"From my point of view, it's quite disappointing," he said. "That PB Ronald Reserve area is a hub of learning and it would have been great to have the CCG moving in.
"Unfortunately, some of the building was structurally unsound and it wasn't meant to be." It is not yet known where the CCG will relocate to.

New community moves in By Rowan Forster An ulta-modern 952-hectare community south of Officer, set to provide 10,000 homes, 1600 jobs, four public schools and two town centres, has been signed off by Victoria's Planning Minister. The Cardinia Creek South precinct was given the tick of approval by Richard Wynne late in December, clearing the way for the massive development. It will include wide-ranging upgrades to the road network, including the extension of Thompsons Road, Pattersons Road and Bells Road. It coincides with the approval of Pakenham East, which has been subject to community backlash. Many have bemoaned the likelihood of the estate acting as a home for "battery humans". It has since been revealed that the Cardinia Creek South precinct will be bigger than Pakenham East, set to house about 3000 more dwellings. The new community will have 22 per cent open space, including 21 scenic parks and two conservation areas. However, ratepayers are sceptical about the impacts of the humungous development on roads infrastructure. Brian Heenan, who moved to Officer in 2017, believes his attempt to escape the hustle and bustle of Melbourne's inner suburbs is proving to be futile. He fears that the new estate will severely clog Thompsons Road and the Princes Highway. "Everybody wants the infrastructure to be brought up to speed before they keep building these massive developments, but they just won't listen," he said. "I didn't move out to Officer because I wanted to be in a high-density concrete jungle,

The Precinct Structure Plan has outlined an average of 18 dwellings to be developed per hectare near town centres, school and sports reserves and 16 dwellings per hectare in other areas, in an attempt to ensure neighbourhood character is maintained.
In an embarrassing blunder, the estate was formerly named after McPherson, a World War I Digger believed to be from the nearby suburb of Clyde. It was later discovered that he was actually from Clydesdale. In approving the whopping development,
Planning Minister Wynne said: "We're retaining the liveability and charm of our city while catering for a growing population and helping young people get into their first home." It comes as part of the State Government's bid to ensure a 15-year land supply by planning for an additional 100,000 lots to deliver affordable housing and high-quality jobs.

Pokies bid backdown By Rowan Forster Anti-gambling campaigners locked in a David and Goliath battle before the state's planning umpire have touted the withdrawal of 80 proposed poker machines in Officer as a milestone victory. On Friday, 21 December, the Victorian Civil Administrative Tribunal received a request from Station Hotel proponent Tim Rice to terminate the proceedings. The move came as a shock development in the 21-month saga, which saw the proposed premises rejected by both Cardinia Shire Council and the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation. Mr Rice was fighting in VCAT to have the aforementioned rulings overturned when he instead opted to pull the application. However, it may only serve as a short-term reprieve for the defiant detractors - with the Berwick businessman indicating the battle is far from over. Mr Rice has since told the Gazette that the withdrawal was a "strategic move", given the impending Officer Precinct Structure Plan. He claims the PSP, due to be handed down in 2019, could further strengthen the case for a licensed hotel and gambling venue in Officer. It came just days after anti-gambling campaigners took to King Street for a public hearing - lambasting the proposal. Resident Andrew McNabb, who spoke before the tribunal, argued that the new pokies would cause crime, domestic violence and self-harm to spike across the region. When he learnt of the outcome, Mr McNabb was ecstatic. "These things cause family violence, poverty, crime and drug and alcohol abuse and they aren't acceptable in our community," he said. "When I was informed, I had to read it twice - I was shocked.

"Not only is this a huge win, but it has set a precedent across Victoria. "It's a great victory for the community and it just goes to show what people power can accomplish." Detractors maintain that they are not opposed to the proposed new venue in the heart of Officer, just the addition of the pokies. According to VCGLR statistics, punters splurged more than $26 million on poker machines within the Cardinia Shire municipality last year.
The community's fight was bolstered by campaign group Bad Bets Australia, which spearheaded an aggressive crusade against Mr Rice and the proposal. While the group's tactics were labelled by some as "controversial" and "excessive", they proved to be successful. In one instance, Bad Bets' Rohan Wenn erected a billboard beside the Princes Highway, Officer, with a caption reading: Will you be bashed, will you be robbed, will you take your own life?"
Head of the Alliance for Gambling Reform Tim Costello even expressed concerns with the facility, citing its close proximity to schools. "Creating a new venue with 80 pokies within two kilometres of 12 schools and child care centres was rightly rejected by the Cardinia shire councillors and the VCGLR, so that should be the end of the matter," he said. The matter was being heard by VCAT when it was suddenly withdrawn by the proponent. Hearings set to take place in January and February, 2019 will be cancelled.
Stats spruik crime drop in Cardinia region By Rowan Forster Crime in Cardinia has continued to tumble, according to latest figures, but the number of offences recorded remains higher under the Andrews Labor Government than its Liberal predecessor. According to Crime Statistics Agency data released in December, the municipality saw 5837 crimes committed in the past year. The number came as a seven per cent drop from the 6245 recorded in 2017; however, crime has remained more prevalent under Premier Daniel Andrews' term. In 2014, when the Coalition was in power, 5595 offences were recorded. But population growth has proven to be a factor in the increase, with the rate of crime per 100,000 population sinking to a nine-year low. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville welcomed the latest statistics, but
indicated that there was further work to do. "Our record investment in Victoria Police - giving them the powers, tools and resources they need to keep the community safe - is making a real difference, but we know there's more to do." "We're turning around a six-year trend as crime rates continue to drop in Victoria, by delivering 3,135 new police officers and new laws to keep the community safe." Victims of crime such as Dwayne Brooks, who was bashed during a violent Narre Warren home invasion in 2017, are sceptical that the figures provide an accurate representation of law and order across the state. Mr Brooks said his life was turned upside down when he was assaulted by a gang of crooks. He believes the figures are being used, skewed and abused for the purpose of political warfare. "Every time I hear the political parties
gloating about these statistics, or using them to their advantage, it makes me sick," he said. "A single incident has the scope to change or destroy an entire life, so it is disgusting that 5837 crimes in our neighbourhood can be considered a bragging right. "It doesn't matter what a bunch of numbers say, it matters when your community is scared to sleep at night, worried about leaving the house unattended." Across Cardinia, fewer instances of assault, sexual offences, property damages and break and enters were recorded in the past year. Robbery and arson were the two major crime categories which saw increases across the municipality. Across the state, there were 508,597 recorded offences Shadow Minister for Police and Community Safety David Southwick took the opportunity to lash the government, amid the release of the figures.

Two alleged Kooweerup kid-nappers have been charged after police seized a lamb and a goat, both wearing human nappies, from their property. It comes after a string of livestock thefts, believed to have been orchestrated by animal activists. A 24 year-old was arrested at the address, while a 43 year-old woman, who police claim was a driver during the incident, was intercepted near Rosebud. Both of the women have reportedly remained tight-lipped about the location of other animals, which were also allegedly stolen. It is believed the animals were stolen from John Gommans, who owns both the Caldermeade Farm Cafe and Gippy Goat Cafe. Among the animals taken included lactating goats and an unweaned lamb. "The activists came and monstered our staff," he said.
"I suspect this was being planned to take advantage of the holiday season. "To do this over the holiday season is scummy. "They were brazen up against the police and a lot of people are amazed at their flagrant disregard for the police - it's appalling." Mr Gommans said he was contacted by other farmers who had been hit by animal activists and he had also been in contact with the Victorian Farmers Federation. In recent months, vegan activists have stormed the Pakenham Saleyards, Caldermeade Farm and Gippy Goat Cafe. During a protest on Friday, 12 October, about 50 animal liberationists stormed the Caldermeade Farm with stakes and placards denouncing "inhumane" farming procedures. The VFF has since taken aim at the perpetrators, pleading for tougher laws to charge activists who trespass on farms to take animals. Video clue in shooting Police hope CCTV images will help solve a shooting that occurred in Narre Warren last June. Southern Crime Team detectives are continuing to investigate the incident happened on Berwick Springs Promenade at 12.30am on Saturday 30 June. Police attended at the location and found one bullet had penetrated the front of the house while a second bullet damaged a car parked near the nature strip. Two adults and two children, in the house at the time of the shooting, were not injured. Investigators have released CCTV footage of a vehicle they believe was seen in the area prior to and after the shooting. It is described as a black Subaru WRX sedan. Forgiving tree helps those in need More than $10,000 worth of gifts and non-perishable food items was donated to the Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) Forgiving Tree Appeal in the lead up to Christmas. In years past, library members were able to get their library fines waived in return for donated gifts and food. However in 2018 CCL permanently removed overdue fines, which changed the focus of the campaign. The Forgiving Tree has provided a call to action for people wanting to pay it forward and help people doing it tough. CCL Chief executive Chris Buckingham said it was inspiring to witness the generosity of library members, even when the waiving of overdue fines was no longer an incentive. The removal of overdue fines at CCL has proved a great success. There has been a relatively small increase in overdue items, more items are being borrowed and there has been a marked reduction in 'lost items'. Mr Buckingham said, "Our members have demonstrated just how committed and giving they are. It's clear that they are motivated to help others and we're delighted to be able to facilitate their compassion through our libraries." "This time of year can be difficult for many. There are a lot of added pressures. The Forgiving Tree encouraged our community to step up and contribute to a brighter Christmas for locals in need", said Buckingham. CCL partnered with eight local charities during the six-week campaign, including WAYSS, Cranbourne and Casey North CISS, Transit Outreach Service, Hampton Park Community House, Barry Plant Emerald and Emerald Community House, to ensure the donations were distributed to those who needed them most. "Public libraries can contribute to stronger and more resilient communities in so many different ways. Libraries really do change lives" Mr Buckingham said.

If you’re a parent of a school aged child, you have probably heard of the game Fortnite. It has taken the gaming world by storm. There are literally millions of players worldwide and the game has attracted considerable attention since its launch in 2017. In essence, Fortnite is an online, fast-paced and strategic multiplayer shooter. It is a game enjoyed by both adults and children alike. Before you decide to buy the game and part with your hard earned cash, there’s a few things you need to know about the game first. In Fortnite, a player can explore vast digital realms and locations. A player can connect, communicate and collaborate (via text or audio link) with other players to complete various missions and tasks. While the game is an entertaining rollick, there are a few important things to know before ’caving-in’ and letting your children play it at home. Have you heard of an Epic Games account? Before a player can engage with any aspect of the sprawling game, s/he needs an Epic Games account to play. To play with other players, gamers need to connect with ‘friends’ on the Epic Games network. I recommend a parent/ guardian handles this part of the activation process, as it’s always a smart idea to know what your kids are signing-up for online. The best advice I can give you is to monitor your child’s screen time to ensure they’re connecting with peers or people they know in real-life,
not interacting with strangers or people they don’t know online. If you’ve seen Fortnite being played, you’d know that it depicts considerable amounts of fantasy violence. However, as it is presented in a cartoon, no-realistic way, there’s no realistic body horror or bloody elements to worry about. Even so, too much fantasy violence can have an impact on kids - from nightmares to long-term psychological effects. Experts have raised concerns about children playing games involving continual gun violence for these reasons. I suggest that children are not exposed to these types of games at home, but we realise that it can sometimes be out of your hands. When children do come across mature themes, it’s important for a parent/guardian to be nearby to reassure them. A major concern about Fortnite is that it’s highly addictive. When a child becomes addicted to a game, s/he may start to display antisocial or unusual behaviour. If you’ve noticed a change of behaviour in your child, it’s time to pull the plug. The subsequent temper tantrum may be easier to manage than having to break the gaming addiction later in adolescence. Here’s a tip! As a Fortnite match can last up to 20 (real-world) minutes, a positive way to restrict a child’s screen time is by limiting play to one or two 20-minute matches a day. Since its launch in 2017, teachers have also voiced concern that children are distracted by the game at school. Educators have commented that children’s social awareness and behaviour at school has been affected by playing the game from pretending to shoot and attack peers to problems of cyber-bullying being brought from home to the playground. So, there you have it in a nutshell! If you decide to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to Fortnite in your household, that’s your prerogative. The game is on!

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe.
