Mr O'Brooy said he "understands that affordability is often a problem for parents" and he "doesn't want the children to miss out on an opportunity to harness their God-given talents". The opportunity shop operates from their home, where the couple and their children have long run out of space for themselves. The idea behind the op shop is not to sell anything; so if someone couldn't afford even one dollar, they could feel free to help themselves to clothing, furniture and bric-a-brac.

Berwick Pastor Kerrigan La-Brooy has been widely recognised this year for his mind-blowing involvement in the local community for the amazing work his does. Mr La-Brooy won the 2018 Casey Volunteer Pair Award in July, along with his wife, Michelle. This well-deserved recognition comes in appreciation of the ongoing contributions and sacrifices this couple makes for everyone around them. Mr La-Brooy is the Senior Pastor of Gethsemane Church in Berwick which he planted in April 2017. He's also the founder and creator of Gethsemane Charity, which feeds and clothes over 400 people daily, seven days a week. In addition to the church and charity, together with Mrs La-Brooy and their six children (all 10 years and younger), the La-Brooy family run a free Talent Academy, an opportunity shop and they host the Clyde Carols by Candlelight each year. Mr and Mrs La-Brooy work tirelessly, from way before sunrise to way past sunset. In fact, Mr La-Brooy often operates on two to three hours sleep and one meal a day. Kerrigan is quick to acknowledge the help and support of his congregation. "Team Gethsemane give their time selflessly and committedly to make all these services possible and accessible," he said. Gethsemane Church was nominated for four awards at the City of Casey award ceremony in July. Mr La-Brooy was also nominated for Casey

Nine students and three staff members from Fountain Gate Secondary College partook in an international journey to Cambodia from 6 to 15 December. As part of this journey, staff and students spent a few days exploring the sights of Cambodia, learnt about their rich history and completed a service project whereby they built a house for a young family in great need. To build this house they worked with Volunteer Building Cambodia (VBC). VBC is a locally run, community driven NGO (nongovernment organisation), focused on helping poor Cambodian families improve their living conditions. VBC provides poor families in rural Siem Reap with housing, wells, water pumps and toilet facilities. VBC builds solid houses for extremely poor families who lack the resources to build their own liveable homes. As part of this project the students and staff donated their labour to build the house for the family in need. Throughout the year students have fundraised with the aim to raise $3700 to pay for the building materials. Students were successful in this endeavour. "We were also lucky enough to be sponsored by a number of local businesses which helped us to achieve our fundraising goal," staff member Matthew Hodgson said. "We would like to sincerely thank Cadbury, On the Go Sports, The Grand Receptions, Office Choice, Reform Clothing, St John of God Berwick Hospital, Shinners Plumbing and Sparx Electrical for their generous donation to our journey."

Job hunt leads to million-dollar lotto win A Clyde grandmother is the happiest woman on earth after discovering the life changing news she won a division one prize of more than $1.7 million in a $30 million TattsLotto Megadraw. The ecstatic woman held one of the 17 division one winning entries which was drawn Saturday 29 December last year. Each entry takes home a division one prize of $1,764,705.89. Confirming her unexpected win with a TattsLotto official on 2 January, the woman broke down with tears of joy. "You've made me the happiest woman on earth," she cried. "You've got no idea how excited I am, I don't believe this is real! "I'm so beside myself, I've had so much bad luck in the past, I still can't believe it." The Melbourne resident shared how an ordinary online job hunt led to the million-dollar discovery.

Bad drivers blitzed in Operation Roadwise

"I was actually just looking at jobs online and I thought I'd better check this TattsLotto ticket that I got last Saturday so I went onto the Lott website," she explained. "I punched my numbers in and I thought there's no way this could be real. "I'm totally blown away! "I thought maybe I would get the lowest prize or something like that, but I would have never thought I'd win division one. "This is just incredible." As the life changing news sunk in, she realised 2019 would be a year like no other and her working days were officially over. "I was really stressing out because I was supposed to go back to work next week and now I don't have to ever go back to work again!" she exclaimed. "I'll pay off my house, pay some bills and

help my kids out. "And I'm going to travel. "This has made my year, it really has." The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, purchased her winning entry at Stud Park Lotto, Stud Park Shopping Centre in Rowville. Stud Park Lotto owner Kun Lao said the team was ecstatic to have sold another division one winning entry. "We consider our outlet a very lucky shop because we have not only sold two Tattslotto division one winning entries but we also sold a winning Powerball entry worth $16.7 million in 2016," she said. "We're so excited that we've sold another big winning entry, we've been waiting for this day. "We wish our division one winner all the very best."

Serious road injuries were down in the South East during the recent Christmas-New Year traffic enforcement blitz. Across the statewide Operation Roadwise, nearly 34,000 traffic offences were detected over 24 days from 14 December to 6 January. It equated to nearly an offence a minute. Senior Sergeant Clint Wilson, who oversees Southern Metropolitan's highway patrol units, said 16 people were seriously injured on roads in Greater Dandenong, Casey and Cardinia during the period. Pleasingly, this was down from 25 in the same period 12 months earlier. He said the massive numbers of police on the road played a part. Statewide, nearly 18,000 police shifts were undertaken. During the operation, 42 drink-drivers, 10 drug-drivers and 61 unauthorised drivers were detected in Greater Dandenong. Each of them was statistically more likely to be involved in a serious crash, Sen Sgt Wilson said. "We were actively removing the worst drivers off the road." Of the road casualties, the main contributing factors were speeding, alcohol, drugs and fatigue. "As a whole, drivers and road users are considerate and are taking care over the holiday period. "But we still have a core group of drivers that don't care." He said Highway Patrol police were proud of the dropping road toll, which hit a record low 214 in Victoria last year. "No one likes giving out tickets. Each of them have a passion to reduce road trauma." Across the state, Operation Roadwise netted 12,000-plus speeding offences - with a surge in drivers surpassing the limit by 10km/h and more. There were also 452 vehicle impounds, as well as 2492 unregistered vehicles and 2282 unauthorised drivers detected. Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Stephen Leane said the high number of people engaging in behaviours that posed a risk to themselves and others was concerning. He pointed to large numbers of drivers using mobile phones and drugs, without seatbelts and disobeying road signs. "I encourage everyone who's using our roads to think carefully about what they can do to keep themselves and others safe."

$1.4m damages for fall By Cam Lucadou-Wells A visiting parent at a Hallam playcentre has been awarded more than $1.4 million in damages after he fell more than three metres from play equipment onto a concrete floor. Abdul Qayom, 39, of Hallam, suffered career-ending spinal damage when a raised platform gave way under his feet at Xanadu Playcentre on 23 November 2014, the Victorian County Court heard. The Afghan-born refugee had been attempting to save his then five-year-old daughter who was stuck in the multi-level play equipment featuring slides, tunnels and a padded stairway. Qayom was taken by ambulance to a hos-

pital emergency department, in extreme pain and short of breath, Judge Jeanette Morrish stated. She was satisfied that a girl had fallen from the same platform the day before the fall. "It is inherently unlikely that if concocting his account he would happen to strike upon a story about a girl falling from the equipment the day before when, by mere coincidence, a girl did actually fall from the equipment the day before." Qayom was found to have suffered permanent physical and mental injuries including spinal damage in three places and soft-tissue damage in his shoulder. He'd lost the capacity to work, and required

life-long treatment and medication, he argued. Xanadu's then-owner Kylamanda Investments admitted liability for negligence but claimed Qayom exaggerated his injuries at a hearing at the Victorian County Court in September and October 2018. Judge Morrish found on the balance of probabilities that Qayom was a credible witness. He continued to be wracked by back and shoulder pain that radiated into his neck, chest, head and legs. He could sit down for no longer than 25 minutes at a time, Judge Morrish noted. The once socially-active man had worked long hours as a robot technician. He was now de-

pressed and unable to resume his former work. He spent most of his time resting at home and only occasionally socialised. The fall had caused him to suffer a loss of enjoyment of life, his earning capacity was destroyed and he'd incur medical expenses most likely for the rest of his life, Judge Morrish found. Qayom's prognosis was "poor" - "no sign of improvement has yet occurred," she stated. She awarded Qayom $1.37 million damages including pain and suffering, past and future lost earnings and medical costs. In a further hearing in December, Judge Morrish awarded him about $150,000 in legal costs.

Bunjil Place library up for a national design award By Brendan Rees Bunjil Place Library has been nominated for the 2019 Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Library Design Awards. These awards, presented every two years, highlight the achievements of some of Australia's leading architects, designers and library leaders. Bunjil Place Library is a modern, light-filled community library designed to welcome everyone to discover, learn and connect. Set over three-levels, the library has an inviting and inspiring design with a range of spaces including a reading amphitheatre, quiet study nooks, peaceful outdoor reading garden, public computer zones, dedicated children's space and digital game area. "Bunjil Place Library has inspired the community. It is recognised as a destination in its own right," Casey Cardinia Libraries chief executive Chris Buckingham said.

"People come from all over Melbourne and Victoria to experience a beautiful contemporary building where everyone is welcome." Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said: "The City of Casey is proud of the beautiful, stateof-the-art library we've been able to deliver for our community at Bunjil Place, which has become a place for people to discover, learn and connect." Sponsored by Architecture AU, Raeco, the State Library of Queensland, the awards celebrate design excellence in new and refurbished libraries across Australia and have been developed in the context of other competitions internationally. A gallery of images of the 16 nominees is available on the ALIA website. "Bunjil Place Library is a welcome addition to the local community. It provides an engaging space for everyone to enjoy," ALIA chief executive Sue McKerracher said.

Forgiving tree helps those in need More than $10,000 worth of gifts and non-perishable food items was donated to the Casey Cardinia Libraries (CCL) Forgiving Tree Appeal in the lead up to Christmas. In years past, library members were able to get their library fines waived in return for donated gifts and food. However in 2018 CCL permanently removed overdue fines, which changed the focus of the campaign. The Forgiving Tree has provided a call to action for people wanting to pay it forward and help people doing it tough. CCL Chief executive Chris Buckingham said it was inspiring to witness the generosity of library members, even when the waiving of overdue fines was no longer an incentive. The removal of overdue fines at CCL has proved a great success. There has been a relatively small increase in overdue items, more items are being borrowed and there has been a marked reduction in 'lost items'. Mr Buckingham said, "Our members have demonstrated just how committed and giving they are. It's clear that they are motivated to help others and we're delighted to be able to facilitate their compassion through our libraries." "This time of year can be difficult for many. There are a lot of added pressures. The Forgiving Tree encouraged our community to step up and contribute to a brighter Christmas for locals in need", said Buckingham. CCL partnered with eight local charities during the six-week campaign, including WAYSS, Cranbourne and Casey North CISS, Transit Outreach Service, Hampton Park Community House, Barry Plant Emerald and Emerald Community House, to ensure the donations were distributed to those who needed them most. "Public libraries can contribute to stronger and more resilient communities in so many different ways. Libraries really do change lives" Mr Buckingham said.

2018 - YEAR IN REVIEW

CEO Tyler’s shock exit City of Casey's former durable chief executive Mike Tyler stepped down in sudden and mysterious circumstances back in February. Mr Tyler had "mutually agreed" with Casey that "now is the right time to move on," according to a statement by the council on 21 February. He left the job on 22 February, with no official explanation from the council of why there was a parting of ways. Mr Tyler had served as the council's one and only chief executive for 23 years, overseeing a municipality that rapidly grew from 130,000 residents to more than 300,000. He'd worked for Casey and City of Berwick for more than 36 years. Nearly three years ago, Mr Tyler's reign was extended for four years - until 2020. The re-appointment was made by a previous term of councillors, who controversially chose not to advertise the $350,000-plus annual position. Mr Tyler said it was time to move on and allow other leaders to shape the council's future direction. He told Star News he had it in mind for some time that it would be his last year in the job but there had been on official decision until this week. The move into Bunjil Place heralded the right time for Casey to move into new leadership, he said. Asked to describe his emotions, Mr Tyler said he was "very happy". "I am going out on a high," he said. "I can look back with a lot of pride at what has been achieved and Council and I have come to a fair agreement." Mr Tyler left as the longest serving council CEO in Victoria, the only one remaining of the original appointees following the Jeff Kennettinspired council amalgamations in the mid1990s. He said he hoped his legacy would be considered the four major projects undertaken

ecutive during the meeting. A closed meeting involving councillors and council officers followed that night. Former Mayor Geoff Ablett said Mr Tyler had strongly supported a significant capital works program with Bunjil Place setting a "new benchmark for suburban council facilities".

Mr Tyler said he had no plans - beyond training for triathlons - but his mind was not closed to any career opportunities that may arise. Joao Garcia finally found his mum in February - 40 years after being allegedly kidnapped as a young boy in East Timor during the Indonesian invasion in 1975. Much like the award-winning film Lion the Narre Warren printer had lived most of his life questing for answers about his past. Through that time, he's lived in Portugal and Australia without knowing his mother's true name. He had none of his birth records, which were apparently destroyed during the invasion. His alleged kidnapper registered him under a new name and told him his mother abandoned him. He carried the painful likelihood that he'd never find his mother again. In February, out of the blue, Joao's brotherin-law got a call from a Timorese friend in Noble Park. Apparently the friend was neighbours with a woman asking around for her long-lost son Isaac. For some reason, it clicked that Joao was indeed Isaac. "Your mum has been after you for so many years," the neighbour told Joao. Ironically, Joao had lived in the neighbour's home in Eumemmerring soon after arriving in Australia 20 years ago. He and his 70-year-old mother Isabel Soares re-connected on social media. They exchanged stories from 40 years apart via video calls with a go-between translator. "She was crying, I was crying," Joao recalls. "Every day she would pray and burn a candle. She'd dedicate that to finding me. "She said she never abandoned me."

2018 - YEAR IN REVIEW

They said it: ’18 in quotes “I called you previously the ‘Casey LIE’ because I can’t get a word of truth out of you. That’s stands also by the way Losers in Exile.” City of Casey Cr Sam Aziz said to Casey Ratepayers Association spokesman Brendan Browne after Mr Browne presented his submission of matter related to draft revised Council Plan 2017-21 and the 2018-10 Budget.

Lisa Pietro Paolo with the white gums she said had lifted the adjoining footpath and destroyed her front garden in May.

Street ‘monsters’ Thousands of pest gum-trees lining the streets of Timbarra Estate, Berwick continued to plague residents back in May despite a renewal plan by Casey Council. Up to 6000 towering Wallangarra White Gums were dropping branches and piles of leaves, killing lawns and garden beds and lifting and cracking footpaths and homes, residents said. Casey Council's removal program of 100 trees each year is not extensive enough, they said. They wanted the "monsters" gone. Alan Richardson, who lives in Theodore Ter-

race, led a campaign against the trees in 2014. Half of the trees were removed in his terrace, but he said it's time to drum up an estatewide petition to finish the job. "They're just not the right type of tree. They drop leaves continually, no grass can grow under them, they clog up the spouting, flood roofs and burst water pipes. "It's only by the Grace of God they haven't dropped a big beam on someone's head. "Most people like trees - trees that are suitable for a housing area. These are not. "They are just monsters."

Mr Richardson said the trees also sucked the moisture out of the estate's clay soils, causing subsidence and cracking in homes. This is exactly what John and Mirjana Jovanovic claimed had happened to their substantially-cracked home walls. Their house in Coolabah Grove is about 10 metres from the nearest gum tree. Yet they said the marauding root system had killed their front lawn as well as a rose and lavender garden, and cracked their home driveway and living room walls. The wall cracks inside were several centimetres wide and up to two metres long.

“I can look back with a lot of pride at what has been achieved and council and I have come to a fair agreement.” City of Casey’s then chief executive Mike Tyler stands down in sudden and mysterious circumstances in February. “He straight away stabbed me; tried to kill me, he hit me in the neck.” SECUREcorp Security Officer Shadi, 26, of Hampton Park reveals the horror of being allegedly stabbed in the neck was confronted by attacker, Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, during the Melbourne CBD terror incident on Friday 9 November. “My son rang me. He straight away freaked out because he wasn’t sure that I’d left for work.“ An out-of-control car ploughed into a family home’s bedroom at high speed at The Promenade, Narre Warren South, on 9 April. The owner of the house, Jamie Moroney spoke of his shock saying he had left for work just minutes before the accident.

2018 - YEAR IN REVIEW

Shot of redemption Workers and proprietors at a Hampton Park shopping centre feared for their safety after being nearly struck by "stray bullets" during an ambush shooting at a tattoo parlour back in February. Star News believed that businesses had made an approach to force out the Nitro Ink studio - which has been linked to the Commancheros outlaw motorcycle gang - in the wake of the 22 February attack. In what police described as a targeted shooting, two armed men wearing balaclavas entered the studio on Fordholm Road and opened fire about 1.20pm. A 35-year-old man, believed to be a customer, was shot multiple times in front of five other staff and customers. He was in a serious, stable condition at The Alfred hospital, and the gunmen remained at large. Victoria Police's anti-outlaw bikie gang Echo taskforce was investigating. During the ambush, bullets blasted through the back wall of the tattoo studio into a neighbouring real estate agent and a law firm. At Blue Sapphire real estate, a bullet allegedly pierced a desk chair at head height as well as a filing cabinet. Another bullet was described as travelling through the office of Hammersmith Lawyers, narrowly missing staff and ricocheting off the front entrance window. "Lucky is not the word," said a shopping centre worker - who did not wish to be identified. "We were blessed that nobody was hurt." The incident follows an attempted 2013 bombing of Nitro Gym in Hallam, which is next door to a child play-centre. A few months following, Star News wrote

They said it: ’18 in quotes By Jessica Anstice The things people say. They can amuse you or make you grind your teeth. But nothing brings a story to life like a bold quote. Here are some of the best for 2018: “I believe Americans can build big buildings in that time. They could partially rebuild the twin towers.” Narre Warren North resident Geoff Warner compares the length of the time the Pound Road, Shrives Road roundabout has taken to build. “Even now, we look around and hear a noise, expecting to see him and he’s not here. He was a pretty well-loved dog.” Hampton Park resident Bev Shepard’s Jack Russel, Lucky, died after consuming what was believed to be rat poison in January. “She finds me unconscious quite often.” Lindsay Forsyth spoke of her five-year-old daughter Aoife who often calls an ambulance when she collapses due to a medical condition called POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome).

The Nitro Ink crime scene. another story about the incident. The tattoo parlour shut down and sought a form of 'redemption' in April. Nitro Ink changed its name to Redemption Tattoo Studio and opened in Somerville.

A message on Nitro Ink's Facebook page on 28 March boasted of the "exciting news". "Facebook isn't allowing us to re-name the page so we will be starting from scratch. "See you all real soon. I miss our loyal customers so much."

“His spirituality was broken; his persona was broken. He was coming home and telling me that he no longer wants to go to school.” Marzena Smalec said her teenage son was a “very happy boy“ until she claims disturbing animated gay sexual activity was shown to students at Cranbourne East Secondary College.

2018 - YEAR IN REVIEW

Car on collision course Residents were calling for urgent safety upgrades after an out-of-control ploughed into a family home's bedroom at high speed at The Promenade, Narre Warren South, on 9 April. The driver, a Cranbourne North man in his 40s, was said to have been overcome by a medical condition when his red Mazda missed the tight bend and launched airborne up a lawn rise into the brick home about 7.20am. He was extracted from his car wedged in rubble and the bedroom's walk-in wardrobe. He was hospitalised in a stable condition with chest injuries and grazes. Fortunately, none of the home's occupants were in the car's path at the time. One of the residents, a shift-work nurse, would often be sleeping off in the same bedroom at that time of morning. The owner of the house, Jamie Moroney spoke of his shock saying he had left for work just minutes before the accident. "My son rang me. He straight away freaked out because he wasn't sure that I'd left for work," he said. His son was about to have breakfast in the kitchen but luckily not injured, he said. Mr Moroney said he found the car sitting on top of his bed, adding the driver was incoherent and "didn't know what was going on". "I just wanted to get the ignition off the car," he said. "The last thing I wanted was the car to catch fire." "The roof was crashed down on top of him," he said. "So they (emergency services) had to cut the roof off and then relieve the pressure on his legs to get him out." Mr Moroney said had it not been for his wife's roster she could have easily been killed. "Normally my wife would be lying back in bed after I'd gone to work because she is a shift worker."

Council bills us $142K Casey councillors racked up a whopping $142,692 in training, education, travel, carer and IT bills - which were all claimed as expense entitlements. According to council's 2017-18 annual report, former mayor Sam Aziz topped his claim of $30,984 during 2016-'17 with $35,627 last financial year, according to council's latest annual report. This included more than $19,000 on travel, nearly $6,500 on IT and communications, and about $9,000 on training and education. When contacted by Stat News, Cr Aziz conceded "we have nothing to hide." "I don't even know what the expenses are, so it's exactly as they are in the published accounts in the annual report," he said. Cr Aziz defended his travelling claim saying: "We've spent peanuts in relative terms to make tens of millions of benefit for the ratepayers." "If it means councillors travelling overseas to China and spending $20,000 in the process and returning millions of dollars in investments then so be it, that's just the way it is." Cr Aziz offered no apologies for his overseas trips, saying "they're not junkets by any stretch of the imagination." "You're putting in 16 hour days ... they're actually business trips and they're hard working trips that deliver results. "I just work within the budget," Cr Aziz said, "And deliver a certain capability and that's exactly what I do. "Trust me if you want to get rich don't become a councillor," he added. ENTERTAINMENT

‘Every child’s fantasy’ here The Australian Ballet’s Storytime Ballet will once again bring fantasy to life with a brandnew children’s production of Coppelia at Bunjil Place from 23-24 January. Designed as a perfect school holiday activity, The Storytime Ballet series has been expertly crafted for ballet’s youngest audience members aged three years old and up. With a performance duration of just under an hour, this live and interactive production features a narrator to guide the audience through the story. Children are encouraged to come dressed in their favourite ballet-inspired outfits and they can also dance along with the performers. Storytime Ballet: Coppelia is a sparkling tale of magic and mischief set to the wonderful Leo Delibes score, especially recorded for this production by Orchestra Victoria. This spectacular production, set to Leo Delibes’ cheery score, is perfect for the whole family. Audiences will meet the lovers Swanilda and Franz, the mysterious Dr Coppelius, and his daughter, who is not what she seems. Swanilda must rescue Franz from the magician’s lair - with the help of some fancy footwork. Bursting with sorcery and masquerade, romance and high jinks, this is the funniest, sunniest ballet audiences will see in 2018. “We’re delighted about the Storytime Ballet production of Coppelia as it’s going to be such cheerful fun for the whole family,” Artistic Di-

Westfield Fountain Gate has a number of exciting in-centre activities for the kids and the whole family to enjoy.

School holiday activities rector David McAllister said. “Coppelia is every child’s fantasy - that moment when your dolls magically come to life. This production was created as an immersive experience for families. It’s pure light-hearted fun and a perfect introduction to ballet for children: they can dance along with Swanilda as she rescues her love from the magician.” Storytime Ballet in its fourth year has quickly become a family favourite for new and loyal dance fans with over 34,000 people attending last year. Supported by Principal Partner Telstra, The Australian Ballet’s Storytime Ballet series has been greeted with critical acclaim and many sold-out performances. Both kids and parents have responded warmly to this special program, which was made with children in mind at every step of the creative process.
