There are very few people who have given as much back as Gavin (Soupee) Smith who has run Soupees in Upwey every friday evening, for nearlly 10 years. to allow individuals to learn a craft or subject away from the normal academic stream - free and in a fun, casual environment.

Over winter Gavin also takes it upon himself to support marginalised members in St Kilda and provides donated blankets and other comforts while walking the streets and giving a friendly ear.

This year in conjunction with Bendigo Community Bank, over 1000 blankets, sleeping bags and warm clothing was distributed all over Melbourne and the Dandenong Ranges

There are a small number of people, groups and organisations in the Dandenong Ranges which have become synonymous with the region.

These people and groups have not become well-known for their names, but for displaying the qualities that the hills are known for.

Here at the Mail we love our community and we enjoy highlighting the achievements of the many inspiring individuals and organisations in the region that give back so much - the only tough part is trying to whittle down the list of candidates because, let's face it, there are too many to mention in just one edition.

In 2018 there was one individual who stood out against the rest and who displays everything the Dandenong ranges is, and should be.

For those who don't know Gavin Smith, he's become a well-loved institution of Upwey.

For nearly ten years, on every Friday afternoon, rain, hail or shine, Gavin - also known locally as 'Soupee' - can be found in Upwey's Main Street dishing out hot soup, pizzas and other refreshments, while offering a kindly word, and a cheery smile.

He has served countless pots of soup, and although he has been assisted over the years by Belgrave Rotary and Upwey Township Group, it's Gavin himself who provides the rock-solid community benefit.

"Soupees has always been about the fact that I just want to get out and help people in a practical way," Gavin said.

Over 60 bikies hit the road and rumbled in to the Upwey-Belgrave RSL on Sunday 4 February to raise much-needed funds for the iconic hills RSL, after they struggled to remain open following a fraud case involving their former treasure.

The rain couldn’t dampen the spirit of the 2018 Belgrave Lantern Festival, and thousands of residents from the Dandenong Ranges and surrounds took to the streets of Belgrave to show off their homemade lanterns. As usual, the 12th annual lantern parade was nothing short of dazzling.

At what's commonly considered the Melbourne cup of camel racing, Rachel Woodham from Gembrook took first place at the Alice Springs Camel Cup, on 14 July, 2018.

Aurelio Denasha of the Ojibwa Tribe and Uncle Bill Nicholson stood together in solidarity of indigenous people's everywhere at the 2018 Belgrave survival day event.

Alan Lacey’s panel van holds the title of Australia’s fastest salt racing panel van and in March 2018, his self-built panel van nicknamed, ‘the flying brick’ reached a speed of 283.5km/h. The Mount Evelyn man continues to push the vans limits into 2019.

More than 18,000 hand-made poppies covered Emerald and Puffing Billy to mark 100 years since World War I came to an end. Those knitted, crocheted, felted and sewn red and black poppies were sent from around the country to the Emerald RSL Remembrance Day Committee, who set about the task of covering the town in a blanket of red.

Artists, residents and community groups in Mooroolbark are Jumping for joy after the township secured $192,144 in funding from the Pick My Project program. Mooroolbark Traders and Community Group Inc. attracted over 240 votes for the project and the groups aims to reinvigorate the town with an array of graffiti art, that will cover the towns vacant walls.

Put hard waste out Yarra Ranges Council is encouraging residents to check their hard waste collection date and are reminding people to only to put their waste out the weekend before their pickup time.

Annual hard waste, bundled branches and metals collections will be taking place across the Yarra Ranges from mid-January to March 2019, giving residents a chance to dispose of appliances, furniture and excess branches from their properties.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Tony Stevenson, encouraged residents to check what they can put out for collection and make the most of their collection.

"The annual hard waste collection is a great chance to clean up and clear out our properties and gardens," Cr Stevenson said.

"It's an essential part of the year for many residents, but it's also a very ugly time to be a visitor coming through the area.

"We're mindful of the fact that the warmer months make up a large portion of our busiest tourist season, but it's also the best time for our contractor to get their trucks to some of the more remote areas of the Yarra Ranges.

"It's worth taking the time to check Council's website, see what you can put out and when, and make sure you only put out your hard waste on the Sunday (weekend) before your collection week begins.

"Ideally, we can all use the service without piles of rubbish sitting on nature strips too long."

Police were amazed that no one was more seriously injured in a two-car crash on Mountain Highway.

At 1.20pm on 26 December, Olinda police, Highway Patrol members and local CFA units attended the Ferny Creek collision.

Police said a 20-year-old probationary driver crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

They will charge him on summons with a number of traffic offences including careless driving, crossing double lines and failing to stay left of centre.

Both vehicles suffered significant damage and had to be towed.

Three occupants of the Holden wagon were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Acids, fuels, cleaners and other chemicals cannot be put out for hard waste collection, but can be disposed of through the Detox your home mobile collections organised by Sustainability Victoria.

Cultural heritage runs deep The Yarra Ranges Heritage Network has produced a Guide to Heritage in the Yarra Ranges for the community and visitors.

Warburton's historic Signs Publishing printed the booklet and Yarra Ranges Council's Grants for Community program provided funding.

The guide highlights key sites across the region that showcase its unique history.

Mayor Tony Stevenson said the Yarra Ranges was internationally-renowned for its wine, food and landscape and many tourists were often surprised at the area's depth of cultural heritage.

"As the home of William Barak, Dame Nellie Melba, Edna Walling, Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts, our history is also of international standing and a major attraction for the area," he said.

Police say a two-car crash in Ferntree Gully followed erratic driving.

At 12.20pm on 4 January, a silver Subaru Liberty sedan was seen driving erratically on Glenfern Road, Ferntree Gully.

The vehicle collided with a red Toyota Camry sedan at the intersection of Brenock Park Drive and Burwood Highway, near Woolworths.

An altercation ensued between the drivers of the two vehicles and police are seeking any witnesses or dashcam footage.

Fined for burnout Police received a report from the public about a vehicle doing a burnout in Dion Street, Ferntree Gully, at 7pm on 30 December.

Shortly after, they allegedly observed a 33-year-old man doing burnouts and driving dangerously on damaged tyres.

The man allegedly returned a positive preliminary breath test for alcohol and was required to accompany police for an evidentiary breath test.

He returned a reading of 0.105 and his licence was immediately suspended and his vehicle impounded under the “hoon” laws for a period of 30 days at a cost of $978.

Police charged him on summons with a number of serious traffic offences including drink driving; driving in a dangerous manner, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, failing to have proper control of a motor vehicle, making unnecessary smoke and noise, and driving a defective vehicle.

Yarra Ranges Heritage Network chair Tom O'Meara said the guide included the contact details for 15 heritage groups so people could contact them to find more information on historical issues they would like to explore further.

favourite personalities as well as the ordinary people that shaped the region," he said.

Police are investigating the cause of a singlevehicle fatal crash in Kilsyth on Saturday 5 January.

It occurred on Liverpool Road near Chandlers Lane just after 9.15pm.

Police believe the driver, who was the sole occupant, was travelling north on Liverpool Road and failed to negotiate a slight left bend and crashed into a tree on the opposite side of the road.

After hitting the tree the car rolled onto its roof.

The driver died at the scene.

Police are seeking information from anyone who might have seen the vehicle in the area prior to the collision or have dashcam footage.

What made news in 2018 State election James Merlino retained the seat of Monbulk, following the State election, and in his campaign to quell a CFA volunteer backlash committed over $25 million to the Monbulk electorate.

The previous Emergency Services Minister extinguished a volunteer backlash over Labor's bid to split the CFA, easily winning and retaining his seat.

Despite the backlash he won the seat with 59 per cent of the two-candidate preferred vote, managing to fend of Liberal candidate John Schurink, who won only 41 per cent of the two-candidate preferred vote.

Following the election Mr Merlino said he looked forward to representing Monbulk and delivering the millions in promises he made prior to the election.

Burnham beeches It's been vacant and decaying for decades but, in October 2018, locals gave a cautious thumbs-up to the redevelopment plans for the crumbling Burnham Beeches estate in the Dandenongs.

The final planning permit which was granted by Minister for Planning Richard Wynne identified the removal of the historic beech trees and under strict conditions Mr Wynne stated that every beech tree along the stretch of road was to be preserved.

Those trees had initially been a sticking point with activists who lobbied hard to ensure the Burnham Beeches' historic trees were saved.

The final permit has seen a cordial outcome to a particularly contentious project and most community groups are satisfied with the result.

Burnham Beeches will be restored to its former glory.

The planning permit also allows for the development of a 55 room hotel, function centre, shop, brewery and two food and drink premises.

Bruno the dog Over 156,600 people were touched by the story of Bruno the staffy who was stolen from Cold-

stream Animal Aid in November 2018, while his owners were on holiday.

A simple post asking for help to find him attracted over 4200 shares, and the search for Bruno soon became a national affair.

The beloved family pet touched the hearts of all in the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges, when it was also reported that the owners had

adopted Bruno, three years earlier, after foster carers had rescued the dog from death row at a Mildura pound, and that he also suffered from separation anxiety.

Thankfully only four weeks later the fouryear-old pup was located and reunited with his overjoyed owners in early December.

What they said: 2018 the year in quotes "She's a very nurturing and benign figure and I don't think I know anybody who cannot fall in love with her."

In November last year Skywhale floated effortlessly above the Yarra Valley to herald the opening of Tarrawarra's exhibition 'Through Love ... ' by Patricia Piccinini and Joy Hester.

The Mail took the time to speak to Ms Piccinini about the unique hot air balloon.

"The success on the day is never measured by how much money is raised but by the joy and happy memories created for all our children and hills families who join together in the spirit of good will and community."

The Halloween on the Green event, organised by the Philanthropic Collective at Ferny Creek has become an enduring event in the Dandenong Ranges calendar. This year marked its return and organiser Andrew FillipGautier demonstrated why the event has become so popular.

"Pharmaceuticals were present in every insect and spider we tested - including those collected in Dandenong Ranges National Park."

A study by a global team of experts found traces of 69 different drugs in insects living in six streams around Melbourne including a stream in the Dandenong Ranges National Park. Co-author Jerker Fick, a chemist at Umeå University in Sweden, analysed the insect and spider samples and was surprised at the saturation of drugs in waterways even in the Dandenong Ranges.

"I really think you have to know what's occurred in the past so you can have some sort of pointer on how to move forward."

60 years ago, Helen Coulson wrote the book The Story of the Dandenongs. Today her book is considered to be hills' historians' primary reference guide and a bible for researchers, hobbyists, and those with any interest in the

history of the region. She spoke to the Mail about the importance of keeping history alive.

"I did back off for a little while, but not for long ... I felt if I chucked the towel in then, it's not what the boys would have wanted ... we went through hell but we were lucky in the people we knew," Mr Hall said."

For 100 years, the Upwey CFA has been serving the hills community and for 50 of those Peter Hall was there. He spoke to the Mail about retirement and the challenges he faced when his sons, Travis and Anthony Hall were killed in a car crash in Cockatoo in 1995 "Now that the book's finished I feel like that chapter in my life is over and a new book begins."

Heather Roberts finished her book which is dedicated to her husband Kyoshi Andrew Roberts who passed away from glioblastoma multiforme grade IV brain cancer. Written in a series of diary entries, the book is a poignant

look into the journey that Ms Roberts and her family underwent while caring for her husband.

"I was just so sick of staring at a screen and not seeing the sunshine."

Leah McLeod had over 300 kilograms of garlic stolen from her property but was adamant that she wouldn't give up on her dream.

"It's a constant mental battle for all of us, we're always thinking about Rhys and what are the triggers."

In July 2018, The Barnett family organised a concert to raise money for a support dog that would assist their son Rhys who has autism cope with daily challenges. They told the Mail that a simple dash to the supermarket can result in a breakdown, and so to help ease the stress and help Rhys with his daily internal challenges, the family decided to fundraise for a companion dog.

YEAR IN REVIEW Gembrook Pub One of the sadder stories that the Mail reported on in 2018 was when then Gembrook pub burnt down.

The locally described 'heart and soul of Gembrook' went up in flames on Monday 24 September, 2018, as many shocked local residents watched on.

More than a dozen fire fighting vehicles and around 50 firefighters were called to the scene, but unfortunately a large portion of the pub was completely destroyed.

Foul play was ruled out in the investigation and CFA investigators deemed the fire to be an accident which started from a build-up of lint in the dryer.

The fire was devastating blow to residents and the owners as the heritage-listed Ranges Hotel underwent a major renovation in recent years - helping to breathe new life into the main street.

Upwey CFA centenary Upwey CFA cemented itself as an enduring part of the hills when it celebrated 100 years of service in February 2018.

With such a long and proud history, there was plenty to share over the weekend long celebration.

Of course, the further Upwey CFA delved into its history; the more residents understood just what an incredible contribution its members have made on the community.

Starting from humble beginnings in 1918, the progress of the station has been truly significant and the station has grown to become an essential part of the hills CFA group and the Upwey community.

Over the celebration weekend, hundreds of locals turned out to view some of the earliest fire fighting equipment used in Australia, and Academic author Arthur Winzenried compiled a definitive history of the widely-respected station to mark the occasion.

In his research he made it abundantly clear that the station was a vital part of the hills and especially important to the people of Upwey.

Puffing Billy Railway management announced the temporary ban on the 50-plus years practice, pending an internal review of the incident, which is still yet to be released.

This year the Mount Evelyn author, researcher and historian, Anthony McAleer was recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honour List.

"Right from the start, it was clear this brigade is run by the community for the community. These folk were ordinary people who belonged to the Upwey community, yet they really put their lives on the line quite often."

Anthony McAleer This year the Mount Evelyn author, researcher and historian, Anthony McAleer was recognised in the Queen's Birthday Honour List 2018 for his service to the community, and to military history.

Through his involvement with Mt Evelyn and Lilydale RSLs, as a committee member on the Seville War Memorial Committee, author of several books on local and military history, and through numerous talks with school and other groups, he has shone a light on the personal stories and bigger picture of Yarra Ranges' military history.

His community volunteering and researching military history started around 1990 with involvement with Lilydale RSL and Lilydale & District Historical Society. He has been secretary of Mount Evelyn RSL since 2002 and is editor and producer of their monthly newsletter, and is a member of the Mount Evelyn History Group. His work with Museums Victoria as team leader and tour guide at the Immigration Museum further fuels his passion for Australian history on a daily basis.

Questions over Art of Place

The editor’s desk The Mail team is now back on deck and looking forward to another year of reporting on the Yarra Ranges.

The soaring temperatures on Friday 4 January put the hills and valley front of mind, even as we enjoyed the final days of our Christmas/New Year break.

The bushfire threat could stick around until April, from what we're hearing locally.

We're full of praise for the area's volunteer firefighters who were on standby, prepared for the worst as the temperature soared above 40 degrees.

We'll be bringing our readers some fire safety messages and advice over the coming weeks.

We'll also be preparing our coverage for the 10th anniversary of Black Saturday.

The devastation is still fresh in many people's minds, and we're mindful of avoiding stirring up painful memories unnecessarily.

Our focus will be on the way the community banded together to rebuild.

We'll touch on the horror the fires caused - it can't be ignored - but will look more closely at the lessons learnt, the improvements made, the friendships formed in the aftermath.

We want to reconnect with people we spoke to immediately after the 9 February blazes, and share stories previously untold.

LETTERS What ever happened to Art of Place?

The recent response by Burrinja and council demonstrates a complete lack of accountability and fails to address several key facts not included in the article.

The grant was administered by Yarra Ranges Council in 2011, which coincided with the main construction works for the existing performance complex.

The council decided to spend the major part of the funds ($200,000) on the hard landscaping, notably the extensive paving at the front of the complex to facilitate the opening of the building.

This was never the overall objective of the grant, which was the creation of an Art of Place Garden as an indigenous cultural and environmental place for learning, reflection, gathering, creativity and celebration of local indigenous culture and country.

It was recognised that much further consultation with the aboriginal community and detailed work was required to refine the design for the soft landscaping to fulfil the vision for the overall project.

A project brief was prepared by Burrinja and commitment made for further works to be undertaken, but has never been honored.

Mr Box as project manager knows full well the project was never completed.

To argue that an audit was done to indicate otherwise raises serious doubts as to the integrity of this process, where funds can be shown as spent but have not met the original objectives of the grant.

The gardens are a disgrace and lack any coherent theme or story and comprise a hotchpotch of older garden remnants with exotics (including declared environmental weeds) and native cultivars which have no cultural relevance.

That no action has been taken to complete this project over the last seven years reflects poorly on the current management and on the council, which has overall responsibility.

It is yet another example of the abuse of goodwill of community volunteers who are passionate and committed to a project that has the potential to provide wide-ranging benefits to the community.

It also reflects poorly on our engagement with aboriginal communities, all of which is clearly in line with Burrinja’s cultural, visual and performing arts function.

If Burrinja can recently find $3 million for additional building works, what effort have been made to find funding to finish the gardens?

The silence is deafening.

Time to get Mental ... as anything

Ripped but boring

Aquaman is an entertaining but empty-headed superhero film.

When the zealous Atlantean King Orm (Patrick Wilson) declares war on the surface world, his half-brother Arthur Curry/Aquaman (Jason Mamoa) must claim his birthright as King of Atlantis to avert the war.

Aquaman is thrilling to look at, with stunningly vibrant visual design and well-composed action scenes featuring wide shots and impressive long takes, yet has thinly-written characters and a slow, sloppy narrative.

Mamoa has a relaxed bogan charm as Arthur, but it's hard to invest yourself in his journey because his co-star Amber Heard (as Atlantean princess Mera) is a more compelling and developed lead. Mera is far more qualified to rule Atlantis than Arthur: she's smarter, more focused and more perceptive than Arthur.

The pacing is erratic, dawdling across nearly 2.5 hours yet jumping from one nebulous goal or setting to the next, and the plot muddies Arthur's own character arc.

Arthur seeks an ancient trident that will secure his claim to the Atlantean throne. He develops some humility and responsibility during the journey, implying that he doesn't need the trident to save the day. However, the film's climax still hinges on his possession of the trident, undermining his paltry character growth.

Aquaman's action and dazzling visuals cushion the excessive length, but the film is still unfocused, poorly-paced and features a ripped yet boring hero.

Best known for their music throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Mentals will perform at Sooki Lounge on February 7.

Known for hits such as Live It Up, Too Many Times and The Nips Are Getting Bigger, the band had a string of hits, including 16 Australian Top 30 songs.

"Martin and I have spent our lives competing with songs," Greedy said.

"It's not stopping. He does his things his way and I do mine - the way it's always been and the competition continues."

Black mist over burnt country

By Derek Schlennstedt On September 27, 1956, the British exploded an atomic bomb on Pitjantjatjara land in South Australia. The place would become known as Maralinga, which means "thunder" in the now-extinct Garik Aboriginal language.

Black Mist Burnt Country is an award-winning exhibition of artworks by over 30 Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists commemorating the British atomic tests in Australia in the 1950s and '60s . After an extensive tour of nine public galleries and museums in four states and territories since September 2016, the exhibition is returning to Burrinja Cultural Centre - its home gallery.

"With over 100,000 visitors it has been well received, but more importantly the feedback received indicates that visitors feel this was a thought-provoking, powerful and moving exhibition," Burrinja's exhibition curator JD Mittmann said.

The exhibition tells the stories of the atomic tests in Australia by revisiting the events and

locations through the artworks of Indigenous and non-Indigenous contemporary artists across the mediums of painting, print-making, sculpture, photography, video and new media. . Black Mist Burnt Country reveals the history of the British atomic test program at Maralinga and examines the long-lasting impacts on people and land, as well as its ongoing legacies.

The artists provide insights into a chapter of Australian history that is little known and Mr Mittman said that at the heart of the exhibition was a familiar story - the dispossession, dislocation and cultural disconnection of Aboriginal people.

"This is not only a story of the past," Mr Mittmann said.

"It is a reminder that nuclear weapons are still around. With the proliferation of these weapons and current international tensions the nuclear threat is as high as it has ever been."

The exhibition will be on display at Burrinja Cultural Centre until 10 February.

Monbulk pair finishes third After winning the Eastern Ranges over60s pairs in October, Andrew Bell and Eric Markham from the Monbulk Bowling Club went to the City of Frankston Bowling Club to take on the other 15 regional champions from around the state.

The competition decided the state pairs champions for 2018.

The Monbulk pair defeated the West Coast pair from Portland in the first round by seven shots.

They then defeated the highly fancied pair from Bendigo in the quarter final in a long and tense match.

The Monbulk pair then played the Northern Gateway winners from Sunbury in the semifinal, but the opponents proved too good.

Bell and Markham finished the championship in equal third place.

In Tuesday pennant, Monbulk 1 was able to maintain its position on top of the ladder by defeating third-placed Yarra Glen in a keenly contested match by 26 shots, 74 to 48.

Peter Koomen's rink was in control all day and had a resounding win by 25 shots, 37 to 12.

Andrew Bell's rink got back on the winners' list with a comfortable win by 10 shots, 23 to 13.

Eric Markham's rink started poorly and was unable to make up for a slow start, losing by nine shots, 14 to 23.

Monbulk 2 was in third place on the ladder and played fourth-placed Mooroolbark at home.

Monbulk controlled the contest for most of the game, winning by 32 shots, 79 to 47.

Eric Furby's rink was again in great form,

winning by 21 shots, 37 to 16.

Graeme Goller's rink continued its good run of form winning by 12 shots, 23 to 11.

Peter Francis' rink went down by one shot in a tight affair, 19 to 20.

This win enabled the team to strengthen its hold on third spot on the ladder.

Monbulk 3 was in second place on the ladder played third-placed Eastwood Golf at its opponent's venue and was greeted with a very slow green.

Barry Adhead's rink used the conditions to their advantage, with Greg Meyers and Craig Ward both playing well and this gave their rink a win by 19 shots, 26 to 7.

However, Don Barnetson's rink had trouble all day, losing by 18 shots, 11 to 29.

Mike Harris' rink kept things reasonably tight but eventually went down by eight shots, 11 to 19.

This meant that Monbulk went down by seven shots overall, 48 to 55, and lost second place on the ladder to Eastwood Golf.

Night Owls bowls started last Thursday and it was a terrific night, the club said.

It starts at 7.30 pm. Participants should dress casually and wear flat-soled shoes.

Bowls can be provided and players of all abilities are encouraged to attend to have fun and enjoy the game of bowls.

Single players or teams can be accommodated.
