Wesburn-Millgrove CFA keeps on delivering through thick and thin! It's an assessment of the brigade's new president Andy Bennett that would resonate with the community, and which certainly resonated at the brigade's 70th anniversary dinner celebration on 23 June. The celebration at Oscars in Warburton was an opportunity to recognise the brigade's rich history and to recognise the people who have contributed over the years to its service to the Wesburn, Millgrove and broader Yarra Valley communities - and to numerous other communities across Victoria and interstate in times of need. The event was attended by current and former brigade members along with special guests including Craig Lapsley, Victorian Emergency Management Commissioner - a great supporter of the brigade; Eildon MP Cindy McLeish, Cr Jim Child, CFA Board Member and Warburton CFA Captain Hazel Clothier, District 13 officials and numerous others. Former brigade president and ex-captain Brian Halit AFSM spoke of the history of the brigade which was formed in 1948 and originally known as Millgrove Fire Brigade. Mr Bennett has been a brigade volunteer for 15 years. He said the brigade had a strong history, and a positive future. "Talking to people like Brian (Halit) and the Burkes (Paul and Maxine) who have been here such a long time, Wesburn-Millgrove has the most extraordinary ability to keep on delivering in all circumstances," he said. At times membership has been very low, and at other times very boyant, and there have been other difficulties in the brigade along the way. It's a bit like a family, it's not going to be like the Brady Bunch all the time, and it's not going to be like that at fire brigades either," he said. "But throughout it all, they keep on delivering time and time again, whether in the middle of the day or the middle of the night. "It think a real hallmark of the brigade is its

"He is a loyal and committed fighter for Healesville and its community," one reader said. Another said he was "directly responsible for getting stuff done/fixed in Healesville" and a third wrote that "Garry is just a fabulous human being who is the heart of Healesville!" Departing Wesburn Primary School teacher Mrs Hochkins received several mentions, as did Healesville Inter-Church Community Care Inc (HICCI). Other applause went to emergency services volunteers, district nurses in Healesville, "Angela Fleay for her exceptional cooking skills, helping others and care given to horses attending race meetings" and Kirsty and Steve Bowness for their cystic fibrosis fundraising.

Readers described her as "a wonderful supporter of our community over many years. A woman of immense integrity and heart." Kersten Gentle said she'd had many differing points of view with Kath over the years. "But she truly should be recognised for her service to our community," she said. "So many keyboard warriors these days attack people who don't share the same opinion. "However Kath, following in the footsteps of Mardie, has ensured reasonably fair and open discussion within the community. "I for one truly admire her community work through her time at Mail." Another person who racked up the votes was Garry Christie.

that the lack of maternity services in the Yarra Ranges needed to be addressed. It's an issue we'll continue to follow this year with the hope of forcing some action. And it's an issue that would have flown under the radar without SHHAG bringing it to our attention. The Mail team is ever-grateful for the community interaction we enjoy. Our Facebook page is one avenue for these conversations, and we reached out there to find out who our readers thought worthy of the Person of the Year title. Now-retired Mail journalist Kath Gannaway received many nominations following her departure from the paper in September.

Selecting our Person of the Year is never an easy task. This community is filled with passionate, hard-working people who quietly go about making the Yarra Valley and Upper Yarra a great place to be. In terms of impact, it was hard to look past Save Healesville Hospital Action Group (SHHAG) for the nod for 2018 - the Group of the Year. In March, SHHAG chair Jane Judd spoke out about cuts to health in the Yarra Valley and extended waiting lists. Then in September, she shared the group's submission to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Perinatal Services and spoke to the inquiry's recommendations. The inquiry recommended that the Department of Human Services engage with public hospitals to look at expanding admitting rights for private midwives - a move that could return maternity services to Healesville Hospital. Dozens of mums from across the Yarra Ranges reached out to share their thoughts on the story, and the Mail's Maternity Push campaign was born. We spoke to Yarra Valley Midwives and covered SHHAG's public meeting on the issue at The Memo on 4 October. We shared stories from mothers who gave birth at Healesville and mothers who wish they could have welcomed their child into the world close to home. Candidates in the November State Election even weighed in on the issue, conceding
