Christmas carnival cheer The Salvation Army Pakenham hosted a bustling Community Christmas Carnival over the weekend.

There was a large range of activities running on the free family day on Saturday 15 December, including a jumping castle, fairy floss, ponies, face painting, showbags, a bake sale and much more.

Volunteers from the local fire brigades stopped by for the festivities, and even Santa found some time to say hello to the kids in the lead up to his big toy run.

“It was great spending time with people, talking with people and letting them know we’re here,” Salvation Army volunteer Margaret Searle said.

“Christmas is a difficult time of year for so many families; it was nice to be able to put that cheer back on people’s faces when they’re feeling down and out.”

ATO scam warning Police are seeing an increased number of reports of scammers contacting members of the public pretending to be from the ATO and claiming that there are outstanding tax debts and threatening people with arrest if the debt is not paid immediately.

Police are now also seeing an evolution of this tactic where the scammers are using technology to make it look like the calls originate from a legitimate ATO phone number.

This number may appear on caller ID, be left on voice mail messages for call backs, or directed by *69 for call back functionality.

Scammers do this to make the calls seem more valid when they call people a second time.

Most frequently the number appearing is 6216 1111, but other numbers have been used as well.

While these scam calls may appear to be

from the ATO with a spoofed caller ID, it is important to remember that a legitimate caller from the ATO will never: - Threaten you with arrest; - Demand immediate payment, particularly through unusual means such as bitcoin, pre-paid credit cards or gift cards; - Refuse to allow you to speak with a trusted advisor or your regular tax agent; or

- Or present a phone number on caller ID. Never call a scammer back on the number they provide.

If in doubt, independently locate a contact number for the organisation referenced in the call or email.

If you are in any doubt about an ATO call, hang up and phone the real ATO on 1800 008 540 to check if the call was legitimate or to report a scam.

Officer resident John Schafer wants to give back to the people that helped his three year old son Lucas through cancer treatment.

Lucas was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when he was just 16 months old, on 19 September in 2016.

Mr Schafer is fundraising for the different departments at the Monash Children's Hospital through the Monash Health Foundation (MHF) that help sick and scared children when going through treatment with activities such as arts therapy, music therapy and play therapy.

The MHF guided Mr Schafer through the process of setting up an online fundraising page, ran by MHF called Everyday Hero.

With a bunch of prizes to give away, donated by local business, Mr Schafer will be selling raffle tickets and holding a card night.

He will also be cutting a ribbon shape in his hair and dying it yellow.

"The money we raise will go to the music therapy department. Last year we did the arts therapy department by holding this fundraiser," Mr Schafer said.

"There will be plenty of instruments for the therapists and children to use so we are really hoping that local businesses will get on board and help us put a smile on the children's faces.

"If anybody has a music shop it would be really nice if we could get a discount and get more bang for our money."

Mr Schafer said, "Having the support of family, friends and the wonderful people at the children's cancer centre means it makes our families journey through this a bit more bearable.

Lucas was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia when he was just 16 months old.

"It's real easy to forget about Lucas sister Lauren, age five, we also need to remind ourselves that Lauren too needs time for herself playing with her friends or cousin."

Stadium heat under fire

By Rowan Forster Cardinia Life is facing heated community backlash over the facility's lack of climate control - with visitors claiming the sweltering conditions are unsafe and serving as an adverse health risk.

The pool, gym and indoor basketball and netball courts are reportedly reaching temperatures of up to 35 degrees, forcing officials to call compulsory timeouts during competition.

A petition pleading with Aligned Leisure and Cardinia Shire to install air conditioning and improve ventilation at the complex has already amassed more than 2,200 signatures.

Liam Watt, who only created the petition on Friday 14 December, fears the blistering heat could lead to a serious episode.

As a floorball competitor at the facility, he has experienced the conditions firsthand.

"Last summer we had three or four games called off due to the heat," he told the Gazette.

"We play three 13 minute periods, but with heat breaks it is reduced to three 11 minute periods with compulsory water timeouts," he said.

"During the summer, quite often the stadium heat exceeds 30°C delaying games through heat breaks, timeouts and cancellations.

"Many nights the temperature outside may only be 25 degrees but inside the stadium it can be up to 10 degrees warmer.

"There's the risk of heat stroke, heat exhaustion and all of those sorts of things."

It comes after a female staff member was rushed to Dandenong Hospital after she lost consciousness at Cardinia Life on Wednesday.

While the exact cause of the incident is not known, Aligned Leisure told the Gazette she had "fallen ill".

Since creating the petition, the floorball competitor has been flooded by support, with many sharing similar issues with the heat at the facility.

"My daughters play netball in the stadium and the heat is unbearable, just sitting and watching, let alone them having to run around," Jenny Bassett, from Berwick, said.

"There is not air circulating within the courts and it is very unsafe."

"My children play at the stadium four times a week," another mother said, supporting the petition.

"They struggle some days to breath properly as there seems to be no air ventilation at all."

Second woman arrested after brick thrown from car Dandenong Frontline Tactical Unit officers have arrested a second woman after a brick was allegedly thrown from a car in Narre Warren last month.

It is alleged the brick was thrown from the stolen vehicle at another car while travelling along the Monash Freeway on 19 November.

No one was injured during the incident,

however the victim's vehicle sustained minor damage.

Dandenong FTU officers attended an address in Scott Street, Dandenong yesterday morning (13 December) and arrested a woman after a short foot chase.

The 26-year-old of no fixed place of address has been charged with theft of motor

vehicle, drive in a manner dangerous, drive while disqualified, careless driving, discharge missile, aggravated littering and unrelated offences.

She has been remanded to reappear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 19 December.

A 40-year-old woman of no fixed place of address previously presented herself to a po-

lice station on 12 December.

She continues to assist police with their enquiries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident.

Too many to choose just one however I'm currently reading and really enjoying The Idiots Guide to Ayurveda. Loads of great information and makes it all simpler to understand.

What is your role at the RSPCA shelter in Pearcedale and what does your daily routine look like?

My title is Animal attendant and while I mostly look after the horses and livestock, occasionally I cross over into other areas like the cattery and kennels. No matter which area I'm working in, my main role is to ensure all the animals in my care are looked after. This includes the basics like feeding and cleaning up, all the through to medicating, rehab and working with the vets as necessary.

Have you always had a passion for working with rescued horses?

Yes, as it is for most horse lovers, once you connect with horses they are a lifelong addiction!

So I've always been interested in work that would lead to rehabilitation and rehoming the horses that others have forgotten about.

What is something people don't know about you?

I used to collect 50c pieces, yes, apparently I was a bean counter from a young age! It helped me understand the value of money and now, working at the RSPCA, I'm reminded daily of how every little bit adds up. It's the generosity of so many that think this way that help us continue our work to end animal suffering and to find forever homes for the animals that come into our care.

What is your most memorable moment?

I have lots but probably marrying my husband last year and heading on our massive trip over to the UK. Memories I'll never forget.

Where did you grow up as a child?

Epping, northern suburbs.

What is your favourite movie?

Hands down, definitely, Space Jam. Nothing like a live action animated sports comedy with some alternate history thrown in to make you smile!

Probus hits 25 year mark

Member for Gembrook Brad Battin attended and presented 25 year certificates to long standing members who are still active in the club.

Among them were the founding president, John Greenwood and his wife June.

Mr Battin congratulated the current club president Bruce Lyons on such a successful club providing so many varied activities to promote friendship and fellowship to the retired people in the area.

The Rotary Club of Narre Warren has been building a relationship with Transit Narre Warren, which offers, food pickups, soup kitchen for those in need and other services of needed goods to those that are doing it tough.

The club was keen to donate much needed items to Transit to assist families and those in need over the holiday period.

Transit suggested that toiletries are something they don't always have enough of.

A call was put out to their members (26) who as always responded to the need.

They also contributed over $200 worth of toiletries to the cause.

This meant the haul was very generous and the Rotary Club of Narre Warren hopes many people are assisted by the items.

The toiletries were delivered on Thursday 13 December to Transit.

The club is also in the early stages of helping with driving the food pick up van one morning a week for Transit. This means that much needed food is picked up and delivered back to Transit so meals can be prepared for those in need.

OPINION Two long years Happy second birthday to the Thompson Road rail crossing removal.

Work commenced with the placement of barriers and 60 km/h signs along Thompson Road on 12 December 2016. Construction actually started in January 2017, after return from the annual Christmas holidays.

Work was completed on the first three-lane bridge in June 2018, 17 months later. They are currently working on a second three-lane bridge, due to be completed in 2020!

The idea is to improve traffic flow.

Unfortunately, the population increase in Australia requires the equivalent of a new Canberra to be built every year.

We take nearly four years to do one piece of roadworks which will require an upgrade upon completion.

This is due to the growth in traffic due to population growth, which will have overtaken the improved road.

Don't believe me? Have a look at the length of time it took to improve the Monash Freeway.

It was under roadworks conditions for at least half of 11 yrs we have lived in the area.

Speed of thought We have lived in the same house two months short of 45 years, and if I can remember right there was a garden centre near Somerville Road, Hampton Park long before the shops got built.

Back then Hallam Road was 60km/h and from Fordham Road it was just a dirt track.

I wonder who is the silly person who wants the speed limit lifted to 80km/h?

Hallam Road should stay at 60km/h, and hopefully Pound Road will get dropped down to 60km/h in the near future.

To Anon, (Thumbs down, Berwick Star News, 13 December) the Glasscocks Road reservation has been set aside from the Western Port Highway, Lynbrook, all the way through to Clyde Road, Cranbourne North for at least the last 15 years! It is a must complete dual roadway to take the pressure off Thompsons Road. There are no other major east-west through roads except for Pound Road to the north and Sladen Street to the south. I’m sorry that you bought property in Glasscocks Road, but this project has been on the books for a long time and is a much-needed part of Casey’s progress forward, with our much-needed road improvement network.

Berwick’s Lisa Cameron will be sure to sparkle this Christmas as she takes home her spectacular Artelia sapphire and diamond ring.

The ring was gifted to Lisa by Artelia jewellery house owners Maria and Roberto Ulas after she won the Star News Group and Artelia Christmas competition.

The exquisite ring features a one-carat Australian blue sapphire centre stone, 18-carat white gold and round VS/F diamonds. Its recommended retail price (RRP) is $6,500.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Lisa said.

“I’ve never really won anything before nothing like this - it’s a little bit unbelievable.”

Lisa entered the competition after seeing it advertised within the paper, though admits she didn’t think she had a chance of winning.

And while she plans on showing it off this

Christmas, she hopes it will one day be worn by her future grandchildren.

“I’m definitely going to keep it for myself,” Lisa said “I have my first grandchild on the way so if it’s a little girl ill pass it onto her down the track and keep it in the family. We’ve not got an heirloom, so this could be the start.”

Associate Professor and Consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital Dr Philip McCahy believes that the Casey Cardinia Region is blessed to have “dedicated health professionals who practise patient centred care“.

Despite his confidence in the region’s health care system, Dr McCahy says that “out-patient services are struggling to see all the referred patients and the emergency department is (and will remain) too small“.

“The new St. John of God Hospital in Berwick has been a significant upgrade on the private facilities in the area but private health costs continue to outstrip inflation with many people questioning their value,” Dr McCahy said.

“Unjustifiable gap fees charged by some surgeons do not help and there will probably be some significant changes in this space in the next year or two, not necessarily to the patient’s benefit.”

Dr McCahy has taken on an additional role this year as the Clinical Director of the Victorian Audit of Surgical Mortality - in effect the auditor general for all surgery in the state.

“Most surgery is well performed and extremely safe, with very few preventable adverse events, but bad things do rarely happen and it is always worth discussing potential complications with your surgeon before any planned procedure,” he said.

Students donate to kids

By Jessica Anstice It all began in 2017, in a Hampton Park Secondary College Year 8 Health and Alive class, where students found out they had the chance to create something that could be donated to the wider community to help those in need.

At first, they students had no idea what to make for their project, but they knew they wanted to make something that would give other children joy.

"We thought about our own childhood and what made us happy, so we decided to make a colouring book and activity book," student Hristina Travica said.

"With that in mind we brainstormed what we wanted to base the books on. We ultimately

came to the decision of basing the books on the alphabet.

"This meant that every child would be included as well as having something to help them learn or further their knowledge."

The class worked together to design and create the books.

Tigerprint published 200 copies of each book.

"We are thankful for Tigerprint for making our colouring and activity books a reality, as well as our teacher Ms Naomi Dawson for being there for us every step of the way," student Taylor Stevens said.

"From start to finish this whole project took us one year and on Wednesday 5 December we

finally went to the Royal Children's Hospital alongside Ms Dawson and George, where we donated the 400 books."

This Christmas at the Royal Children's hospital, the books will be wrapped up and gifted to the children who are currently staying there, either awaiting surgery or recovering.

The money to be able to produce the books was from a government initiative that puts money into Health and Alive projects to give back to the community along with a donation to raise the amount purchased from the school.

The school adhered to the strict guidelines of the hospitals donation policy.

Happy first birthday comes back to Boomerang Bags Boomerang Bags volunteers were invited to celebrate all that they have achieved in their first year of Boomerang Bag making as well as a Christmas break up at Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House on Thursday 13 December.

Boomerang Bags City of Casey started with their first sewing bee on 14 December last year in Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House, Berwick.

There are now four Boomerang Bag groups operating in the city of Casey, meeting in Berwick, Coastal villages, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills.

The four groups combined have made over 2350 bags in the last 12 months which is an outstanding achievement, diverting a large amount of waste from landfill.

These groups operate under the support of the City of Casey and the individual community centres.

Anyone can assist in bag making, you do not need to know how to sew.

There are many steps in the process including cutting, ironing, screen printing and making cups of tea.

It is also the perfect place to have a go and learn how to sew in a fun and friendly environment.

Gethsemane Church and Charity Presents its Inaugural Christmas Miracle where more than 200 children in the community will receive a special Christmas gift. Fun day for all abilities

By Jessica Anstice The Life Skills for Community Living class from Narre Community Learning Centre visited Bunjil Place to celebrate the International Day of People with Disability on Thursday, 29 November.

Students had the opportunity to go on a tour of the entire complex, which covered seeing the theatre, the recording studio, the art gallery, the library and the function rooms.

The theatre was a new experience for two or three of the students and the computers and PlayStation were attractive features of the library.

The visit ended with coffee and relaxation at Bunjil Place's cafe.

"The students participated in the tour enthusiastically and said that they would visit Bunjil Place again," Narre Warren Learning

Centre literacy co-ordinator Clea Nicol said.

International Day of People with Disability is observed annually.

This year's theme was about inclusiveness, equality and empowering people with disabilities.

Students in the Life Skills for Community Living class attend the program to improve their literacy, numeracy, employability and communication skills.

"This tour was a wonderful chance to apply those skills in a real community context," Ms Nicol said.

"Narre Community Learning Centre wishes to thank Bunjil Place for their partnership in celebrating this important day."

Shock blow for Team 11

By Nick Creely The A-League will officially expand to 12 teams by 2020/21, however Team 11 will not be joining the national competition after Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced last Thursday that the south-east bid would not be part of the initial expansion process.

In what is a major shock, the Western Melbourne Group - which will based in Tarneit in the Melbourne’s west - has been chosen as the third Melbourne-based club to join the competition in 2019/20, as well as MacarthurSouth West Sydney in what appears to be an 11th hour decision by the FFA board at their meeting last Wednesday night in Sydney.

Up until at least last Wednesday, Team 11 the bid comprising of a joint initiative of the Greater Dandenong, City of Casey and Cardinia Shire councils - was tipped to be the Melbourne-based bid to join the competition, ahead of Western Melbourne and South Melbourne.

Team 11 had garnered support from over 55 local sporting clubs and 12 different local councils in the south-east of Victoria, with affiliated clubs from Knox to Traralgon, Aspendale to Mornington and elsewhere all putting their support behind the bid.

Supporters of the Team 11 bid were shattered.

Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti, as one of the driving forces, said it was a “missed opportunity”.

“It’s really disappointing. There’s a lot of hard work put into this,” he said.

“We’ve been talking about this for the last two-three years, how good it would be to have a community club in the A-League.

“There’s no professional football code in this area - whether it’s AFL, rugby or soccer.

“This area is screaming out for something like this.”

Mal Suleman is a board member of NPL side Dandenong Thunder who “lives and breathes football”.

He was set to buy shares and apply for a board position with the proposed club.

The many people, who worked so hard on the bid were “really down at the moment”, he said.

“We thought it was one of the best bids going around.

“It’s very crushing.

“The team would have done wonders for the community - it would have lit up the area.”

A “very disappointed” Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the bid organisers remained committed to our community “which has always been at the heart of the Team 11 bid”.

“It was our defining characteristic and we remain very proud of that,” she said.

“Personally, I will continue to pursue opportunities for economic uplift in Dandenong, opportunities for community building, and

In a statement issued only hours after the FFA decision, Team 11 expressed their disappointment, but said they wouldn’t giving up until a professional football club is brought into the south-east region.

“Team 11 is bitterly disappointed not to have been awarded a licence into an expanded A-League competition, but is adamant that one day the south-east of Victoria will house a professional football club.

“The bid team is also immensely proud of the work that has been done in the past two years to build what we believe was a compelling case for A-League entry.

FFA chairman Chris Nikou explained at a press conference that it was a long-winded process, but believes that the decision accepted by the FFA board is the right one for football in the country.

“We’ve been involved in a comprehensive process to identify teams for the expansion of the A-League - I’m pleased to be able to confirm that we have made a decision on expansion, and there will be two new teams joining going forward,” he said.

“We think the opportunity and market is right now to expand the A-League - I can confirm that that two successful bidders are Western Melbourne and Macarthur-South West Sydney, and they give us a wonderful footprint into growth corridors in the Australian market place.

“All the bids had redeeming features, but we’ve settled on these two.”

cilities from day dot of the successful two bids outweighed that of the unsuccessful four bids.

“This has been a game of snakes and ladders - every bid had some plusses and minuses, and we arrived at our recommendation, and the board accepted it.,” he said.

“We had to look at the impact of existing clubs, and the footprint - we picked high population, growth areas, and we took all of this into account.

“It was important that we got into facilities that have good playing surfaces on day one there were bids that missed out that had to be in interim facilities which would not have presented how we wanted it to look on day one.”

Gallop confirmed that the uncertainty surrounding building Team 11’s boutique, 15,000-capacity stadium in Dandenong played a major part in the decision, with the expected cost of around $150 million needing the support of the Victorian government , while the Western Melbourne Group have pledged to fund their very own boutique stadium without any government assistance. He also said that the interim facilities at Casey Fields weren’t “ideal” in the short-term.

The second successful bid, MacarthurSouth West Sydney, will join the competition the following season, and was always at the top of favouritism, partly due to the fact that they will be playing their home games at the already established Campbelltown Stadium.

The pride in ‘Dad’s Army’ Like the motley crew of unlikely heroes they share a name with, Pakenham Cricket Club's 'Dad's Army' will long be remembered and celebrated through the generations to come thanks to Saturday's reunion with a twist.

In the era of the 1970s and '80s, the Lions boasted a crew of premiership winners who later came to be known simply as 'Dad's Army' - as favourite son and current club president Phil Anning explained.

"They were all the older blokes - blokes who'd, for example, retired from footy and wanted something to do during the summer," he said.

"They got together and said they wanted to have a side, and called themselves 'Dad's Army'.

"We put the side in, and in that era the group of them won four premierships in 10 years.

"It was led by (Dave) 'Digby' Hogben - he was the instigator of it all - and they were just fantastic for the club, both on and off the field."

Anning acknowledged the key role the group would go on to play in forming the rocksolid culture that the club enjoys today.

"They used to support all the social functions, and everything we did, really," he said.

"And when they won flags, they'd celebrate as hard as anyone I've ever known."

And now, it's high time they're recognised for their achievements.

"Back in those days you never got a premiership cup like you do now," Anning said.

"You got a shield, but it was perpetual so you had to hand it back."

The records the Lions have been able to compile over the journey indicate they've won around 50 senior premierships throughout the grades.

And amongst them are the famous victories of Dad's Army.

"They're all getting a bit older," Anning explained.

"We wanted to get them together because, unfortunately, five of them - who played in one or more premiership - have passed away.

"We've been guilty of this before too, but most of your reunions are focused on your first XI and the lower grades don't get the recognition they deserve.

"I think it's important we recognise them because they are part of the history of the club.

"These blokes were a significant part of our history because of what they contributed both on and off field."

A unique three-peat that forever intertwines the Warragul Toyota Cup with the richest and most prestigious greyhound race in the world could be on the cards if 'My Redeemer' is to salute at Logan Park on 12 January.

The 2018 winner of the Warragul Cup, 'Aston Dee Bee', claimed the race off the back of winning the Melbourne Cup in 2017; while 2017 winner 'Ando's Mac' had previously claimed the 2016 Melbourne Cup.
