Mr Grewcok wished everyone a merry Christmas, from the Monbulk CFA and urged kids to keep their eyes and ear out for Santa visiting on the Christmas truck.

Santa is swapping his sleigh and reindeer for a fire truck as he attempts to make his way around Monbulk and the Yarra Ranges before Christmas.

This year Monbulk CFA has an ambitious plan to help the big man in red visit every street in Monbulk by Christmas Eve. The brigade and Santa will begin making their rounds on Christmas Eve in order to reach as many streets as possible.

Monbulk CFA third lieutenant and the man who will be donning he big red suit, Dave Grewcock said the brigade had been organising the Santa run for decades and that this year marked 30 years.

He said the brigade loved seeing the joy on children's' faces when Santa arrived in their street.

"We do the whole of Monbulk and start at 2pm Christmas eve at Monbulk Seville road," he said.

'Tis the season to be jolly.

But all of those jolly events with friends and family can be exhausting and often mean a wine or two.

Fatigue and impairment are two of the leading causes of death and serious injury on Victorian roads, alongside distraction, speed and not wearing a seatbelt.

With a never-ending list of things to do and holiday road trips, all five causes could become a factor in a single car trip.

Car, truck and motorcycle crashes are something we see too often, but they never lose their impact.

Over the years I've spoken to many police, CFA volunteers, SES volunteers and paramedics about the impact attending those scenes and rendering assistance to seriously injured people has on them.

It's often hard for them to not imagine their own loved ones in the same position.

Victoria Police put up a Christmas tree adorned with 199 baubles inscribed with the names and ages of those who've died on the state's roads this year.

Each is a reminder of a family grieving for a mum, dad, brother, sister, son or daughter who won't be coming home this Christmas.

Be mindful on the roads this festive season.

The Mail team is taking a short break, returning with our first edition for the new year on 8 January.

A pedestrian died in Ferntree Gully after being struck by a bus.

Police said the incident happened on Burwood Highway just after 7.30pm on Wednesday 12 December.

The man is yet to be identified and died at the scene.

The bus driver was assisting police with their inquiries.

The exact cause of the incident is yet to be determined and Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives will investigate.

Anyone who witnessed the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Seeking witnesses Police are seeking public help after a car crashed into a house in The Basin.

They said a blue Subaru station wagon was travelling north on Mountain Highway, The Basin, about 9.50am on Monday 10 December, lost control and veered off the road and crashed into a house.

The driver, a 16-year-old girl, and occupants of the house were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police are seeking any information or video footage of the vehicle driving on Mountain Highway before the collision.

Belgrave burglary Police are investigating a break-in at a home on Arbor Avenue, Belgrave, that occurred between 7am and 5pm on 11 December.

They told the Mail that thieves stole almost $600 worth of electrical items and gardening tools.

Anyone with information should call Belgrave Police on 9754 6677.

Road to safety

By Derek Schlennstedt Over two decades have passed since Peter Hall's two teenage sons; Anthony and Travis were tragically killed in a Cockatoo car accident.

From that tragedy came a defensive driving course set up by Peter to curb the road toll and perpetuate the memory of his sons.

This year marked two decades since the inception of the Anthony and Travis Hall Memorial Driver Education Fund, and on 12 December three young CFA members were given the opportunity to improve their driving skills.

I would like to thank you both for applying and congratulate you on being chosen ... I hope you enjoy your time with Murcotts, because it is a great experience and I'm sure you'll come out of it better drivers and safer drivers."

The Memorial Education Fund, in partnership with Murcotts Driving Excellence, provides young drivers with a number of safe driving courses, which are valued around $300 apiece.

Combined with the work of local identity Peter Marke and sponsorship from businesses and residents, in its twenty years the drivers fund has seen around just over 100 drivers take on the course and learn how to navigate dangerous and potentially life-threatening situations.

The Mail spoke to Peter Hall who said the important message for young drivers was that the learning process never stopped, and was grateful that the fund was continuing to help young drivers navigate the road.

"We started off small, getting a few through, but we've started getting support not just from brigades but individuals and businesses up in the hills, and it's gradually snowballed on from there," Mr Hall said.

"But I have to give credit to peter Marke there's no way it'd be where it is now without him.

"It's really going now, we've got Jodie on board and coming up with some new ideas, so it's great and really firing."

Both 19-year-old recipients Jesse Heymann and James Gluskie said they looked forward to taking part in the driving course.

Out-of-control truck hits seven cars On Tuesday 11 of December at about 8:20am, a truck travelling South on Mt Dandenong Tourist road, Upper Ferntree Gully lost control and collided with several vehicles before coming to a stop on Burwood highway near Dawson street.

The truck travelling west on Mount Dandenong Tourist road in Upper Ferntree Gully careered into a number of vehicles also travelling west, and a man, initially trapped in a vehicle, was taken to the Alfred Hospital in a serious

condition with head and chest injuries.

A number of other people were also conveyed to hospital with serious but non-lifethreatening injuries.

Investigations are continuing and anyone with information or dash-cam footage is urged to contact Knox highway patrol on 9881 7900.

An out-of-control truck slammed into a total of seven vehicles in Upper Ferntree Gully, this morning.

Drive to conditions Following heavy rain, Belgrave Police Sergeant Paul Phillips warned drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.

Over the course of four days, police attended three accidents along Monbulk Road following heavy rain.

“In these weather conditions people need to drive carefully,” he said.

“We find that when it rains and we get storms we do get a few more collisions than normal.

“When conditions deteriorate it’s important to slow down and drive to those conditions... when it’s wet you simply can’t take the corners as quickly as you would have if it was dry.”

Christmas warning Victoria Police is boosting its presence on the roads over the Christmas and New Year period, with motorists urged to slow down and get to their celebrations safely.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville joined Victoria Police to launch the 24-day Operation Roadwise campaign and remember the 200 lives already lost this year.

All road users will be targeted, including heavy vehicles, light trucks, cars, motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians.

Drivers are encouraged to reduce their own risk on the road by ensuring their vehicle is roadworthy, practising stop-revive-survive strategies, staying off their mobile phones and being alert on unfamiliar roads.

GLA:D can make a life The evidence that only exercise and weight reduction helps with osteoarthritis has been around since 2002.

Yet even until this year, in Australia arthroscopic surgery and medication was favoured by medical practitioners over prescribing exercise by four to one.

The same frustration was faced in Denmark a few years ago, which led to them developing the education and exercise program, GLA:D, or GoodLife with osteoArthritis:Denmark.

Completely evidence based, the GLA:D program built an initial database of 13,000 participants over three years in order to measure outcome levels.

They then brought the outcomes to health officials and were able to dramatically influence the way public and private funding bodies look at managing osteoarthritis (OA).

Instead, we need to begin to think of OA as an inflammatory joint disease, where soft tissue and bony oedema create pain, swelling and add to restriction in movement.

Only appropriate exercise and weight reduction can treat the osteoarthritic process.

GLA:D was introduced to Australia in late 2016, and now there are over 700 registered physiotherapist trained in conducting the assessments and exercise program, including two of our physiotherapists.

Signs there to improve safety

Delivering more than just meals

By Derek Schlennstedt If it's a Monday morning, you can be sure you'll find Belgrave South's Mia Jansen doing the grocery shopping at the local supermarket ... but, she isn't doing the shopping for herself.

Mia Jansen has been a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, a nationwide charity that provides hot lunches to elderly residents and rehab patients, for decades.

She's been doing it so long that Yarra Ranges Mayor Tony Stevenson recognised Ms Jansen for an amazing 40 years of volunteering with Yarra Ranges Council.

The only problem was Ms Jansen couldn't attend the ceremony to receive the award ...Why? Because she was busy volunteering.

To Ms Jansen, volunteering is a way of life and it gives her the opportunity to give back to her community.

"I was with meals on wheels for about 35 years ... that's when I had the last certificate," she joked.

"After that they asked me to do the shopping for a social support program, so I do a bunch a fortnight on the Mondays and take it there."

Ms Jansen began volunteering with Meals on Wheels when her son started at kinder, 40 years ago.

Rather than stay at home and do housework she wanted to use her time to give something back. That something was Meals on Wheels.

"I don't like house work, so this came up and they were asking for volunteers," she said.

"You get to know the people - especially the regular ones, and it becomes a bond.

"You probably get more out of it then they get out of it, because you are giving yourself and your time and you might be the only person they see."

Yarra Ranges Council celebrated International Volunteer Day on Thursday 6 December with 150 other Meals on Wheels volunteers.

Awards were presented to volunteers for between five to 25 years of service, though Ms Jansen was part of a select group to have reached the 40 year mark.

Although she volunteers at Yarra Ranges Council, Ms Jansen also spends much of her time volunteering with Interchange Outer East, and has also just notched up over 20 years volunteering with St Vincent De Paul.

"My husband and I do volunteering and when we decide to do something we stick it out," she said.

"We are very lucky ... we have two healthy boys, and the lords been good to us, so to give something back for somebody else that you

can help out is something special."

Volunteer Support officer at Yarra Ranges Council, Janette Scott commended Ms Jansen on her 40 years and was able to present the award at a time when Ms Jansen wasn't busy volunteering.

"We couldn't offer this service without Mia and the other volunteers. We say that Meals on Wheels is more than just a meal. A major part of it is that there a person coming to visit," Ms Scott said.

It’s getting hot in temperate solar pool

By Derek Schlennstedt In 2016 Yarra Ranges Council confirmed it would allocate up to $200,000 from federal funding to support solar heating for the Olinda Community pool.

That funding is now coming to fruition and it looks like the pool will be warm and temperate just in time for Christmas.

"Many moons ago we were lucky enough

to receive a Federal funding grant to add Solar Water heating to Olinda Community Pool," stated a facebook post on the Olinda Community Pool Facebook page.

"As you can see, it is now finally getting installed, and if we are good, Santa has promised it will be up and running by Christmas."

"We expect it to deliver a boost to the water temperate at the front and end of the seasons, and can't wait to see how well it performs

for our community."

As part of the same program, solar heating has already been added to the toddler pool.

President of the Olinda Community Pool Association James Edge said that the kids were already enjoying the heating in the toddler pool and said the opening pool party event on 1 December was massive success.

"Heating has already been added to the toddler pool and the children love it," he said.

The Gembrook community has been relentlessly campaigning to have illuminated electronic speed signs installed in Gembrook at the primary and pre-school.

Recently a petition of 800 signatures saw the school zone in Gembrook extended to include the Gembrook kindergarten, and although VicRoads accepted that the zone needed to be extended, no illuminated electronic signs were established.

The community has continued its campaign and a new petition has been received by La Trobe MP Jason Wood, who said he would speak with Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Minister Alan Tudge about assisting with federal funding.

“The community has definitely led the charge up in Gembrook and I need to congratulate them on their efforts, but the disappointing thing is that they’ve worked so hard and it hasn’t come to fruition so far,” Mr Wood said.

“To me, the children’s safety comes first and it’s amazing that this hasn’t been done.”

In October, before the 24 November State Election, Brad Battin announced that a Liberal Government would improve safety for Gembrook primary and pre-school students with the installation of flashing 40 km/h signals.

But Mr Wood said the responsibility had now fallen to him and that he would focus on a national program rollout that would mean every school had a 40km/h zone with flashing lights.

“It’s State Government issue, and the reason is VicRoads is the one who puts all the signs up, but it’s become frustrating for me to see Gembrook and Cockatoo, and Menzies Creek miss out on these,” he said.

“For me it’s a no-brainer that these schools should have 40km zones.“ Gembrook Primary School principal Brendan Fitzpatrick said that on a regular basis “vehicles of all descriptions drive past the school in excess of 40km/h during the school zone times“ and that during winter the fog made it even harder to see the current static signs.

“The bottom line is that we haven’t got the signs here,” he said.

“On a classic Gembrook foggy morning sometimes from less than 40 metres away you can’t see the static signs.

“We’ve got a new service station in Gembrook that does have LED signage and it just works, we know it works and all the research says the 40km signs work.

“It’s all about student and community safety.”

Once you’ve got it home Adrian told the Mail that it’s important to leave the tree in a spot that’s protected from the wind, rain and sun.

“When you’re ready to set up, make a fresh cut off the bottom of the trunk or, drill some holes into the base of the trunk.”

“This opens the trunk so it can take in water properly.

“Fresh-cut trees are very thirsty and your tree will drink a lot of water in the first few days so it’s important that you have a stand that can hold enough water.

“Your tree will be happiest away from heat sources and direct sunlight and will drink less water.

“A properly cared for tree can stay green, healthy and happy for that Christmas Day Party.”

10 years, still going strong in childcare

All they won for Christmas

By Derek Schlennstedt A community-run child care centre in Olinda has achieved the milestone of 10 years.

The Hills Community Child Care (HCCC) began in 2008 after a small band of Dandenong Ranges families were left without occasional care places for their children and decided to take matters into their own hands.

Ten years later the not-for-profit service is still going strong, filling the child care needs of more than 30 local families.

The Olinda-based service is overseen by a volunteer committee of parents, including two of the founding members - Sue and Iain Fraser who were instrumental in the launch of HCCC, after the expansion of the four-year-old kindergarten program at Mount Dandenong Preschool resulted in it removing its occasional child care program.

"There was no childcare on the ridge other than family day care, which was heavily booked with long waiting lists," Mr Fraser said.

"There was a year in recess while HCCC formed a committee and looked at different venues and models on how it would run."

"A former principals' residence beside the Olinda Primary School was selected as the site and the group of parents lobbied what was then the Department of Human Services for a licence."

The Frasers' children are now aged 11 and 13 - well beyond the need for child care, however Mrs Fraser remains heavily involved as enrolments officer and Mr Fraser only recently stepped down as HCCC committee president.

The two reflected on the hard work that was required to get HCCC off-the-ground.

"Looking back, it was a large volume of

"We will be forever grateful to Mt Evelyn Bendigo Community Bank for an initial $5000 start-up grant."

Current president Sarah Jackson said HCCC would not be where it is today without the invaluable efforts of the founding members.

Currently the child care groups employs four local staff and several casual staff, and operates 9:15am to 2:15pm three days a week, with a view to go to four.

Fishing is therapy Every weekend of the year, in the waters off Melbourne, something inspiring takes place.

People with special needs - men and women, girls and boys - experience all the simple joys and freedom of casting a line and trying to catch a fish. Paul Bennett is the founder and driving force behind Ferntree Gully not-for-profit group Introfish,- a unique charity he set up to share the pleasure and benefits of fishing.

"We specialise in boat fishing trips for special needs kids and adults including troubled youth, our service are free and we operate on weekends and holidays," he said.

"Groups who have enjoyed our service include respite care, vision impaired youth in gov-

ernment care, everyday kids and adults.

"Fishing is a wholesome sport where every kid who has rod fishing has a chance to catch a big one. Paul's decision to dedicate nine years to providing fishing trips emerged from his own personal tragedy - the death of his son who was born prematurely and with special needs.

"I always said I would take my son fishing but never got the chance, then I came across a report which looked at the benefits that fishing provides to people with schizophrenia, Asperger's, Down syndrome, and it showed it was an absolute winner," he said.

Paul saw other sports including AFL, cricket and rugby union all helping people with special

needs, and saw no reason fishing couldn't do the same. "It's the neutral environment on the water away from their normal surroundings where they get in trouble, the bay gives them a place to turn off, enjoy fishing and reset their thoughts, goals and ambitions," he said.

The registered not for profit fishing group is a specialist fishing service for special needs youth with disabilities, and works with their coordinators, carers and parents to provide a fun and active learning experience through land and boat fishing trips conducted on Western Port and Port Phillip Bay. Council is proposing to amend the Yarra Ranges Planning Scheme by replacing the existing Design and Development Overlay with a new one to achieve outcomes set out in the Monbulk Structure Plan.

Council will request that the Minister for Planning allow Council to prepare and a planning scheme amendment that be available for comment and feedback, and will introduce a new overlay and local planning policy to the Monbulk Town Centre.

The plan, adopted by Council last year, addressed issues relating to housing, industrial land, development in the town centre, connectivity, and future development/use of particular sites. The plan provides a set of urban design guidelines for the town centre area providing direction for built form and development. The new main objectives cover design, town centre character, landscaping and safety.

A new local planning policy would guide land use including encouraging shop-top housing in the town centre area, a variety of shop sizes, relocation of service industry uses to industrialzoned land, and encouraging appropriate plant species. Councillor Jim Child moved the recommendation and said he looked forward to seeing the changes in the town.

"I'm pleased to move this motion ... involves the Monbulk restructure plan which was adopted by council November last year," Cr Child said.

"This is the next step to get it into a position to do the appropriate amendment and seek the minister's authorization."

"It's a great opportunity for Monbulk to move ahead and I look forward to seeing it come to fruition," Cr Richard Higgins said.

Q&A What is something people don’t know about you?

Once the hard work of delivering toys is done for the year, I take a little break and enjoy a few glasses of Yarra Valley wine. I drink in moderation, of course! Paired with cheese and crackers, it’s hard to beat.

What was your most memorable moment?

Rudolph’s nose was on the fritz one night, and I very nearly crashed the sleigh into the top of Mt Dandenong. Thankfully the other reindeer took up the slack and we swerved just in time.

No one would have found me for days in that dense bushland!

What would your last meal be?

The Christmas in July special smorgasbord at the Cuckoo in Olinda. The only thing better than Christmas in December is Christmas in July!

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I’ve been lucky enough to be around for quite a few decades, so there’s not much I’ve missed in the past. In the present - a gift - my Santasense keeps me in the loop. In the future, I’d like to witness all the good boys and girls of the Yarra Ranges opening their Christmas presents this year. It always brings me so much joy to see the smiles on their faces.

What is your favourite movie?

Love Actually. I’ll never forgive Harry for buying that necklace for Mia, but gosh there are some heart-warming moments! And Hugh Grant’s dancing gives me the giggles every time.

It’s hard to go past the classic choc chip - plenty of chocolate! - but I do like a fancy bickie to mix things up. A white-choc macadamia cookie goes down nicely with a cold glass of milk.

Best movies of the year

By Seth Lukas Hynes This past year featured some further triumphs in the superhero genre, a resurgence of Gothic horror, a few outstanding character dramas, some knock-out action and an ever-dependable crop of independent films.

Here is my countdown of the top 10 best films of 2018.

10. The Night Comes For Us. A blisteringly intense Indonesian martial arts thriller, this may be the best example of thriller-as-horror - in the grim, oppressive tone it generates and the gory viciousness of its fight scenes - since The Raid: Redemption in 2012.

9. The Death of Stalin.

An extremely dark yet hilarious comedy about power struggles in the Soviet Union.

8. The Wife.

A heartbreaking yet often funny drama with a career-best performance from Glenn Close, The Wife has shades of both farce and mystery, weaving past and present together to shine a light on unequal relationships.

7. Hereditary.

Grief, family resentment and darker forces form a festering undercurrent in the nailbiting narrative, and the rich character development makes the eventual graphic terror all the more shocking and earned.

6. Sweet Country.

A riveting, stark yet even-handed Western about the dehumanizing effects of colonialism and the resilience, desperation and mundane cruelty in human beings.

5. Annihilation.

A poignant, superbly-acted exploration of how we engage with trauma, refracted through an exotic, visually-stunning sci-fi setting.

Upgrade took out this year's top spot for movies.

4. First Man. A historical drama of astonishing polish and sustained tension, this film distills the historic challenge of the Apollo 11 Moon landing down to a deeply touching personal story.

3. Mandy.

This hallucinatory nightmare by Panos Cosmatos perfectly replicates the feel of '80s action-horror, right down to the grainy film stock, lurid colour palette, moody electronic

score, its slow, sombre build and over-the-top, ghastly pay-off. Nicolas Cage is tragic and terrifying as a gentle lumberjack who, after his wife is murdered by supernatural cultists, devolves into an unrelenting force of rage.

Close show Monbulk Bowls Club's number one team, third on the ladder, played fourth-placed Bayswater at Bayswater.

Monbulk 1 started slowly and took a number of ends to adapt to the green.

This meant that Bayswater was able to establish a handy lead of 20 shots.

After a rain delay, Monbulk lifted its game and came right back at Bayswater to fall short by two shots, 76 to 78.

Dion Addison's rink had a good win by six shots, 24 to 18.

Brian Smith's rink chipped away all day to win by five shots, 19 to 14.

Andrew Bell's rink was down by eight shots after nine ends but recovered well to win by four shots.

Eric Markham's rink was never in the hunt and lost by 17 shots, 11 to 28.

Monbulk maintained third position on the ladder but it is a close contest for positions in the top four.

Monbulk 2 travelled to Carrum and was 16 shots up at the half-way mark when a thunderstorm intervened and led to the match being a washout, with both teams sharing the points.

Monbulk was still able to maintain its position on top of the ladder despite this result.

Monbulk 3 moved into the top four with a win over Heatherdale at home by seven shots, 42 to 35.

Doug Elliot's rink had a resounding win by 14 shots, 28 to 14, while Peter Hiscox's rink went down by seven shots, 14 to 21.

On Tuesday 11 December, Monbulk 1 went to Mooroolbark where a close match saw the home side get home by four shots, 52 to 56.

Eric Markham's rink had a close tussle but was eventually able to take the points by three shots, 17 to 14.

Richard Cookson's rink had a terrific rink by 15 shots, 28 to 13, while Andrew Bell's rink had a difficult day losing by 22 shots, seven to 29.

Monbulk 2 played away against Heathmont.

Eric Furby's team won 11 out of the 21 ends but dropped several multiples along the way and finished with a rare loss, 17 shots to 23.

Peter Francis' team looked confident at eight shots up after the 18th end.

But then they dropped a seven and a one to go into the final end with scores level.

They managed to snaffle two shots on that last end to narrowly win the game 23 shots to 21. Graeme Goller's team led for most of the day and had another good win 27 shots to 18.

Overall, Monbulk had a close win 67 shots to 62.

Monbulk 3 played at home against Bayswater.

Barry Adshead's team had a strong win, 28 shots to 14.

Mike Harris' team had a win 24 shots to 16, and Don Barnetson's team had the best win, 24 shots to nine.

So overall, Monbulk had a strong win 76 shots to 39 and this put the side in the top four.

Night Owls bowls is running on Thursday nights and starts at 7.30pm.

Guests should dress casually and wear flatsoled shoes.

Father Christmas visits Yarra Ranges Athletics

By Jamie Strudley The inclement weather on Friday 15 December did not deter Father Christmas from turning up at Morrison Reserve in Mount Evelyn, much to the delight of Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes.

A modified program kept interest high, the pace fast and the fun full before Santa stole the limelight. Little Athletics will return on Saturday 12 January.

Senior athletes were set to compete at round eight of AV Shield, but the storm on Friday evening flooded Lakeside Stadium, while thunderstorms and heavy rain on Saturday afternoon resulted in the competition being abandoned.

The next round of AV Shield will be at Glenhuntly on Saturday 12 January.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had three teams competing at the State Relay Championships.

Its under-11 girls competed in the four by 200 metres.

Gemma, Steph, Sasha and Zoe finished third in their heat in 2.08.40 with an automatic qualifier to final.

This time was one second faster than at regions.

A few injuries heading into the final made it tough with the team finishing seventh in 2.13.63.

The club's under-10 mixed 4x100m team of Mitch, Luke, Zoe and Maddie finished eighth in its heat with a time of 1.03.72 - an improvement of one second from regions.

The under-9 girls' 4x100m quartet of Eloise, Willow, Emily and Caitlyn ran sixth in the heat in 1.10.11, missing the final by one spot even with an improvement of 2.50 seconds from regions.

It's not too late to get involved in either Little Athletics or the senior competition with Athletics Victoria.

The chase started on the back foot, with the Panthers having their hosts 2/16 before skipper Jayden Bradbury (31) and Ben Pearce (30) teamed up to take control of the chase.

Adrian Catalano then proved to be the backbone of the Blues’ effort with 62* to reach 7/181 and claim the points.

For the Panthers, Nathan Caton-Robertson took 4/35 to take his tally of wickets to 12 for the season.

St Johns Tecoma pressed the issue at HV Jones Reserve against Mountain Gate, with the home team defending against an outright loss.

Cosstick makes a century to headline Monbulk’s day

The only match to be completed on Friday night was the under-12s, with Monbulk making 6/53, with Archie Hilton-Stewart making 17*.

In reply, Knox Gardens made 5/93 with Jason Abraham taking 2/11.

Another big innings from captain Shane Cosstick headlined Monbulk's day on the field against Knox Gardens in the ones.

Carrying his bat throughout the run chase he played a controlled, chanceless innings to finish up on 102*.

Other contributors were Aaron Birmingham with 30 and TJ Utting with 26*.

It was a dominant match with the Hawks looking to finish up at Christmas with a successful start to the season.

The twos battled well in the second day of their game against Knox Gardens, after losing first innings points last week.

Knox Gardens declared early with a lead of about 50, looking to win outright with time to spare, but they didn't count on Jason Simmonds.

By the end of his explosive performance he had struck 17 boundaries on his way to 100*, steering the Hawks clear to finish at 2/135.

The thirds followed on from their awesome

first day performance to stun Mountain Gate in their second innings.

Making 115 last week and knocking over the Gators for 49, the Hawks followed up to go one better and bowled out Mountain Gate for 46 in the second innings.

This time around Josh Rak took four wickets, with Chris Defina taking three.

The fours had a washout this week so were stuck with the game situation from the first week standing. Monbulk made 5/130 off its 35 overs with Brayden Caldwell notching up 73.

In reply, the Footballers helped themselves to 4/264, with plenty of runs on the board.

In the juniors, the under-16s finished their innings on 7/164 with Will Copelin making 33, Nick Taylor making 24 and Jayden Spencer 16.

Upwey-Tecoma couldn't quite get the job done, finishing on 9/157, with Jett Bolton taking 2/21, Nick Taylor 2/24, Jayden Spencer 1/7 and Jake Mackay 1/9.

In the under-14s, Olinda-Monbulk finished their innings on 103 with Ethan Blenkiron on 20 and Josh Davis 13.
