All aboard, men!

By Michael Doran Back in 2014, talk in the Yarra Glen Men's Shed turned to what they could do after Yarra Ranges council stopped putting up the town's Christmas decorations.

The members took on the project, loosely led by Alan Andrews, to fill the void left by the council, and their first thought was the proposed Yarra Glen to Healesville railway extension. The historic J541 locomotive became their design model and plans were drawn up

using old photos.

"The first thing I did was to make the stickers of the numbers on the computer and got to work," he said. "I wouldn't call it a replica but I think the ones we made have a pretty good resemblance to the real thing, they have the right number of wheels anyway.

"We planned it out in the shed and made two locomotives, one for each side of the fence the council said we could attach it to. Then we painted them and put the stickers on and they

were ready to put up.

"Even in the first year we got a lot of positive feedback from people around the town. Also people called up the shed saying how much they appreciated us doing it when the council just walked away from the town."

Whilst the residents of Yarra Glen have been appreciative, feedback from the council for their efforts has been silent. "We received no congratulations or recognition whatsoever from the council," Mr Andrews said.

"Over the last few years we have moved on to making Santas and Christmas Trees, although I reckon the trees were a bit of a flop.

They looked a bit ordinary so we dressed them up in tinsel.

"There's also the small models of the locomotive we made which are in a few of the shops around the town. I have already started thinking about next years project and its a secret, although it will probably look a bit like a reindeer pulling a sleigh."

Bike path plan 'idiotic' I write in support of the letter from Tanya Bowman in the 11 December edition of the Upper Yarra Mail regarding this ill-thought-out proposal (Waburton Mountain Bike Destination).

Not only is there the impact on the nearby residents, but also the poor toilet facilities, parking etcetera in the town.

A recent cycle event not only proved to be an imposition on the residents of Dammans Road due to the road closure, but proved to have little or no effect on the business for local traders.

One business owner stated that the cafes and other shops were very quiet.

I think this is an indication of the lack of worth that this idiotic proposal will have.

Emails have been forwarded to both the council and local member with only lip service responses.

Neil has a mighty big heart If there is one thing that your fine journal does very well, it is recognition of local heroes and successful people.

Your front page on Neil Skinner and Carol Ralls is a case in point.

Humble and generous are two words that describe Neil, the man who reached out to Vietnam vets in a practical way and made us all feel welcome.

A skinny bloke with a mighty big heart and very few words to say.

And Carol, well she is the package.

Also this week, the official word on Cindy McLeish.

Cindy was rewarded by the voters for being a good representative.

Cindy knows that the word politician is just a tag and that representative is the job description.

Loved the cartoon on the Rochford issue, said it all.

Am I the only one?

Am I the only one that sees the council funding budgets and thinks 'if only...' - if only they would put as much effort into securing funding for the residents as they do for the visitors, how much more wonderful this area would be not just for the locals, but also the visitors.

If only the millions allocated to building bike tracks and extending the rail trail was redirected to making roads safer to use and to cross, footpaths, drainage, street lights, road side maintenance, community services, help for the homeless and the vulnerable, childcare services, kinders and schools, emergency services...

How about an extra hard rubbish collection every year or at least a bookable one?

I know that some of these things don't fall under the council's umbrella but what if the same amount of effort to secure $9 million dollars for stage one of a multi-stage bike track could be put into securing funds for the amenity, the lifestyle and well-being of the locals?

What could $9 million-plus provide for your community?

'Tis the season to be jolly.

But all of those jolly events with friends and family can be exhausting and often mean a wine or two.

Fatigue and impairment are two of the leading causes of death and serious injury on Victorian roads, alongside distraction, speed and not wearing a seatbelt.

With a never-ending list of things to do and holiday road trips, all five causes could become a factor in a single car trip.

Car, truck and motorcycle crashes are something we see too often, but they never lose their impact.

Over the years I've spoken to many police, CFA volunteers, SES volunteers and paramedics about the impact attending those scenes and rendering assistance to seriously injured people has on them.

It's often hard for them to not imagine their own loved ones in the same position.

Victoria Police put up a Christmas tree adorned with 199 baubles inscribed with the names and ages of those who've died on the state's roads this year.

Each is a reminder of a family grieving for a mum, dad, brother, sister, son or daughter who won't be coming home this Christmas.

Be mindful on the roads this festive season.

Solar survey scene

By Michael Doran Leadership in the renewable energy debate is hard to find, except in Healesville where a committed group continue on the path towards a net-zero emissions town by 2027.

Healesville CoRE, a community initiated group established in 2107, enlisted Monash University's Net Zero For Communities Team to survey community support for the 2027 objective.

Healesville CoRE President, Jeff Barlow said the results show the growing interest in solar balanced by the need to reach beyond residents already committed to renewable energy.

"The survey reinforces the high interest in the solar bulk buy we are proposing for 2019," he said. "The relatively small number of respondents means we have more work to do to expand our community engagement."

The survey was distributed online and ran from 22 November to 3 December, generating 144 responses, a somewhat small number that the researchers attribute to the 'solely online' survey method.

However within that group the message was clear that cost savings, energy self sufficiency and reducing carbon footprint were the main motivators for households considering a switch to solar power.

The survey found that 93% of respondents would consider changing to a community electricity retailer that reinvested in the Healesville community and 70% are interested in connecting to a micro-grid in the future.

In October, CoRE announced a partnership with Mondo Power, an business that has run bulk buys for other community groups, including the Yackandandah micro grid.

Mondo Power's role is to advise on and organise the technical part of the project, working with residents towards the ultimate goal of a Healesville micro-grid.

One of the challenges is to ascertain what the broader community feeling is and the survey says 'that the attitudes of the remainder of the Healesville community are unknown'.

"We realise this may be a biased sample but it does give us solid feedback and statistics we

can work with to develop the project," Mr Barlow said.

"In February we are running information sessions with Mondo Power to help residents understand the benefits and what is entailed in participating in the power bulk-buy. We are also doing a range of promotional activities, including brochures, market stalls and a new website.

"We continue to receive good support from the Yarra Ranges council, Bendigo Community Bank, Monash University and HEWI." What is undisputed is that Healesville CoRE is doing productive work on behalf of the community by gathering and presenting workable options to locals wanting to pursue a renewable energy future.

"Our community can become more resilient by producing, storing and distributing our own energy needs. With this report we can offer solid solutions and that will help build trust in the project," Mr Barlow said.

Fencing the edible garden - food safety

By Michael Doran The heart of the Yarra Valley seems like a great place to nurture the Edible Forest Garden which has been established at the Yarra Glen Living and Learning Centre (YGLLC). The garden was started in late 2017 and Centre Manager, Debra Traill said its main purpose is to develop awareness of how people can grow their food at home.

"We started off with some garden beds, landscaping and then with a grant from Connected Communities Melbourne we were able to do more plantings," she said.

"The garden expanded to the point where it needed a fence to bring it all together and be a safe place for kids to be in. "We are a family garden group, doing planting, garden care and also workshops in gardening and cooking the produce.

"We didn't have the funds for the fence and our Secretary, Lisa Barry, approached the Yarra Glen Freemasons Lodge and they quickly got right behind the project."

On Friday 14 December, Lodge Master Elect, Kevin Ryan, presented a commemorative certificate to the centre and said that making donations to the community is a key part of the Freemasons Lodge activity.

"We were approached and asked if we could lend a hand," he said. "So we went to the Freemasons Foundation and asked for a grant of $5000 for a special project in our area, which they agreed to straight away.

Not content with providing the funds, the Yarra Glen Freemasons organised a working bee to do further improvements to the garden.

"They came in with a backhoe and built up our compost area, mulched, transplanted some trees for us, made the fairy garden up the back and did all the heavy labour. We wouldn't have the fence or have the garden the way it is

A petition had been made to Yarra Ranges Council highlighting the dangers of Maroondah Highway and Badger Creek Road intersection.

The petition which obtained 132 signatories was raised at the Yarra Ranges Council meeting on 11 December, and asked for an audit to be undertaken to gather data on whether installation of traffic and pedestrian signalization is warranted.

Earlier this year Eildon MP Cindy McLeish encouraged local residents to make their voices heard about the intersection and spoke about the issue in Parliament, calling on Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan to investigate potential safety upgrades.

Councillor Fiona McAllister spoke to the petition and said she hopes it will continue to put pressure on Vicroads to identify the dangers of the intersection.

"It is an absolute dog of an intersection" "It is referred to specifically in the Healesville structure plan as an intersection that needs dealing with and so I know our petitions head into the system but I would ask we are briefed with what happens to that in the new year.

"It is dangerous and at the moment it has a really ineffective pedestrian cage ... it has been a real concern for residents."

Earlier this year, that pedestrian cage was flattened when a car ran into it, raising safety concern even further.

Police charged a 48-year-old Gruyere man in relation to handling stolen goods and possessing proceeds of crime.

They executed a search warrant on 27 July as part of an ongoing investigation and seized a significant quantity of property.

Police have now charged the man with 10 offences surrounding handling stolen goods.

He will appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Police have returned the bulk of the stolen property to its rightful owners.

A 'Mandarin tourism project' is proposed for a disused Healesville lot.

Barry Plant Healesville is selling 11 Maroondah Highway, listing the 101 acre site for $8.8 million.

"Once upon a time a visionary sourced this prime piece of property situated at the gateway to the town of Healesville in the heart of the Yarra Valley," the advertisement for the sign said.

It said concept plans were prepared and the land was rezoned to Special Use Zone Schedule 2 to encourage the development of a tourist precinct.

"The original concept plans allowed for hotel/motel accommodation and self-contained villas, convention facilities including meeting rooms, restaurant and chapel, Chinese landscaped gardens and associated facilities including shops and car parking," it said.

The property has two road frontages, to Maroondah Highway and Heritage Lane.

The Mail contacted Barry Plant Healesville, but agent Peter Nunn was unable to divulge further information about the project at this time.

GLA:D can make a life The evidence that only exercise and weight reduction helps with osteoarthritis has been around since 2002.

Yet even until this year, in Australia arthroscopic surgery and medication was favoured by medical practitioners over prescribing exercise by four to one. The same frustration was faced in Denmark a few years ago, which led to them developing the education and exercise program, GLA:D, or GoodLife with osteoArthritis:Denmark.

Completely evidence based, the GLA:D program built an initial database of 13,000 participants over three years in order to measure outcome levels. They then brought the outcomes to health officials and were able to dramatically influence the way public and private funding bodies look at managing osteoarthritis (OA).

measures as those with mild OA. And if they did go on to have surgery, they showed significantly better post-surgical outcomes compared to those who didn’t complete GLA:D. OA is not a wear and tear condition.

Instead, we need to begin to think of OA as an inflammatory joint disease, where soft tissue and bony oedema create pain, swelling and add to restriction in movement. Only appropriate exercise and weight reduction can treat the osteoarthritic process.

GLA:D was introduced to Australia in late 2016, and now there are over 700 registered physiotherapist trained in conducting the assessments and exercise program, including two of our physiotherapists.

Autism school plan

By Casey Neill The community could soon have its say on plans for an autism school in Coldstream.

Yarra Ranges Councillors will consider a proposal from Lyrebird College at their Tuesday 18 December meeting.

The school for children with autism spectrum disorder is in the process of establishing a site in the Yarra Ranges, and is seeking a location.

Lyrebird has identified a 4000 square metre site on Kelso Street within Fairway Park, adjacent to the Coldstream Preschool and Coldstream Community Centre.

A council report said the land was a cleared, grassed area accessible and adjacent to an existing carpark area.

"The inclusion of Lyrebird College at the location would add to the area's status as an educational precinct," the report said.

The council has assessed the site and the expected positive community outcomes from having the college there.

It will now consider offering to lease Lyrebird College the land by seeking community feedback.

"A further report would be provided to council detailing the community's response, upon which council would make a decision as to whether or not the lease should proceed," the report said.

The proposed lease would be five years, with the option for a further four.

Lyrebird College spokeswoman Melissa Handbury said the school would cater for children aged from Prep to Year 10.

"If all goes to plan, Lyrebird College will open in January 2020 with an initial enrolment of 12 students in two classes," she said.

She said leasing the vacant council land would re-energise the precinct and provide an opportunity to share resources and expertise.

The Yarra Glen Art Show is a biennial exhibition that showcases the rich diversity of artistic practices across the region. Artworks include painting, photography, sculpture, textiles and metal works, capturing styles from realist to impressionist and contemporary abstract to traditional landscape.

The 2019 show will open on Friday 8 March and run across the long weekend. Organisers are calling for entries, particularly from young artists living in the Yarra Valley and environs.

Entries close on Tuesday 5 February, although they may close earlier if all the spots are filled.

The show was founded by six local artists in 2002 and promotes the Yarra Valley, and Yarra Glen more specifically, as a culturally rich and diverse place to visit. Community connection has been the recurring theme running through the art show and the organisers have added sustainability to the planning for 2019.

With revitalisation in mind, the organisers have created new artist awards to reflect the greater diversity of media now placed on exhibition. To encourage children to get involved there are also activities for them to participate in creating an artwork during the event.

The judging is done by well-known artists but one prize, the People's Choice Award, is chosen by visitors, all of whom are encouraged to vote for their favourite work. Prizes are awarded in three other categories, two-dimensional work, three-dimensional work and the Young Artist Award.

All they won for Christmas

National win for a fiery resilience Dixons Creek Primary received a national award for its Wurundjeri-led fire program.

The school took home the Resilient Australia National School Award for the Firestick Project, which had support from Yarra Ranges Council and the State Government.

Students from Grades 3 to 6 learnt about traditional fire practices, culture and the environment from indigenous elders.

Principal Sharon Walker said students took part in an immersive walk on country with Wurundjeri Elder Uncle Dave Wandin to learn about indigenous fire practices and connection to country.

"Many families in the local area were affected by the 2009 bushfires," she said.

"This project helped students and their families learn to understand fire from a different point of view.

"The students learnt about the benefits of traditional Aboriginal land management and how fire can be used in a positive way.

"The children now have a better understanding of traditional uses of fire which they have been able to share with their families and wider community."

Ms Walker said she was thankful for contributions indigenous fire practitioners Victor Steffenson and Ralph Hume.

Some parents attended the National Indigenous Fire Workshop in Cape York in 2016 to learn about indigenous practices as part of the project.

Traditional knowledge of the environment helped the indigenous community to burn country using the plants' cycles to indicate small areas that were ready to burn, known as cool burns.

This type of burning can help to heal country.

The students' work was published in a story book launched last year, The Parent Trees Are Talking.

The books are available across Eastern Regional Libraries in the Yarra Ranges and at schools in the Yarra Ranges, Maroondah and Knox Council areas.

Students presented their project findings to a Federal Government disaster resilience committee last year.

They delivered a live reading from the book to 280 people in Healesville on Reconciliation Day this year.

Yarra Ranges Councillor Fiona McAllister

said her colleagues were all very proud of the students and what they achieved.

"Being fire aware and learning about the realities of where we live is part of growing up in the outer east and Yarra Valley area," Cr McAllister said.

"This project recognises the importance of involving children and young people because they are our future leaders.

"Council is keen to strengthen our community's resilience and this project is one that provides such an opportunity."

The Resilient Australia Awards is a nationwide program that recognises and promotes initiatives that strengthen community disaster resilience and inspire others to do the same in their own communities.

The Mail has played Santa for more than a dozen loyal readers across the Dandenong Ranges, Yarra Valley and beyond.

The All I Want for Christmas winners spent at least $10 at the Healesville Walk, Aarons Outdoor, Cuckoo Restaurant, Monbulk Jewellers, Beechworth Bakery or other participating locations.

They filled out an entry form and went into the draw.

The Mail team called the winners on Wednesday 13 December and posted out their vouchers in time for Christmas.

Bridget gets the votes she needed Bridget Vallence is officially the member for Evelyn following the 24 November State Election.

The Victorian Electoral Commission (VEC) declared her the electorate's new MP with 52.65 per cent of the vote after preferences were distributed.

The Liberal Party candidate picked up 19,752 votes after preferences, compared to Australian Labor Party hopeful Gail Ritchie's 17,764 (47.35 per cent).

Ms Vallence picked up 49.49 per cent of first preference votes, or 18,566, while Ms Ritchie was on her heels with 40.42 per cent, or 15,166.

Greens candidate Brodie Everist received 10.09 per cent of first preference votes, or 3786.

Ms Vallence steps into the shoes of retired Evelyn MP Christine Fyffe.

"It's incredibly humbling to have faith placed in me by the voters of the Evelyn district in electing me as their new State Member of Parliament," she said.

"It's a great honour and an enormous privilege."

Ms Vallence said this was a magnificent part of Victoria with a wonderful community that had so much to be proud of.

"Locally, there is much to be done," she said.

"I won't waste a day: I'll work hard to represent our community in State Parliament and advocate for my election commitments to be funded by the government - especially traffic lights at Killara Road, Coldstream, support for local Autism Services, and more local police and PSOs." Ms Vallence congratulated Ms Ritchie and Mr Everist on their campaigns.

"What matters most is that government lis-

tens to people and responds to their concerns in a meaningful way," she said.

"I look forward to representing our whole community - I will listen and work hard to achieve outcomes that meet local needs."

Ms Ritchie congratulated Ms Vallence.

She noted that the ALP achieved a significant swing both in first preference and two party preferred results - about six per cent compared to the 2014 results and "the biggest we've seen in Evelyn for quite a while and above the state average swing".

"Thank you so much for all your help and encouragement," she said.

"What a wonderful outcome for the Andrews Government.

"The election results absolutely confirm that Victorians value a government that stands for a fair go for everyone and investment in the future."

Tasting success on the coffee front

By Michael Doran An integral part of the Yarra Valley experience is tastings, be they wine, cheese, chocolate, fruits and even ice-cream. With coffee it is more about buying a cup and hoping you like it.

A passionate young Warburton couple, Cleo and Wayne Silva, are changing that by expanding the coffee experience to include tasting and involvement. Cleo Silva said that they opened their Wesburn facility in 2017 to add more processing area and include the tasting space.

"We were growing quickly so we needed more space and we wanted to share our love of coffee with the general public," she said. "We give them three different coffees to taste and that's when they know that coffee can taste entirely different.

"Because we are in a tourist region we want to be more than just a coffee retailer, it's about sharing the experience of how its grown, processed and roasted. It's really lovely to have this presence in the Yarra Valley to interact with the public.

"More and more people want to know about what they are consuming, be it a wine or their food. There's a whole world behind the coffee which you usually don't have access to and that's why we do it.

The roasting and blending expertise comes from Wayne Silva, who has just returned from visiting one of their bean suppliers in Colombia. He said he went there to learn more about how it is grown, how it is roasted and the processing methods.

"I like to push the boundaries of what the technical process can do and I am all about trying out new flavours," he said. "Going to the

Warburton's historic Signs Publishing printed the booklet and Yarra Ranges Council's Grants for Community program provided funding.

The guide highlights key sites across the region that showcase its unique history.

Mayor Tony Stevenson said the Yarra Ranges was internationally-renowned for its wine, food and landscape and many tourists were often surprised at the area's depth of cultural heritage.

"As the home of William Barak, Dame Nellie Melba, Edna Walling, Arthur Streeton and Tom Roberts, our history is also of international standing and a major attraction for the area," he said.

Cr Stevenson said it was a great way for those who lived in the community to understand how the area helped to inspire those individuals to achieve what they did and become so influential.

"There were more than 1500 entries and each of the five varieties we entered won an award," Ms Silva said. "It's nice to get industry

Artwork to remember local World War I soldiers and The Memo's layered history is now on display.

Yarra Ranges Council, Healesville and District Historical Society and Healesville RSL commissioned artist Ali Griffin to create the artwork called Parquetry of Honour.

Griffin used parquetry tiles recently removed from The Memo's auditorium floor to create a hanging sculpture punctuated with a striking modern neon light reading 'they shall not be forgotten'.

Some of the tiles are inscribed with the soldier's names.

Councillor Fiona McAllister launched the artwork in a moving ceremony on the eve of the Armistice Centenary, 10 November.

"The artwork honours the men from Healesville who fought in the war, the strong community who supported them and their memory through using materials from the original Soldier's Memorial Hall," she said.

Cr McAllister said the artwork would draw people's attention to the building's story, while reflecting its current use as a creative hub and performance space.

The Memo Hall was opened on 24 April 1924 thanks to donations, with a carnival and other community activities.

It became an important community gathering place, welcomed a cinema program following the advent of silent movies in the 1920s and hosted a variety of live performances including by Dame Nellie Melba in 1928.

Remembering Esma 104

By Michael Doran In 1904 'Peter Pan' premiered in London, daily radio weather forecasts started and Esma Donnell was born. She has kept up with Peter Pan, posting her 104th birthday on 10 December at AdventCare in Warburton, where she now lives.

Following the big day, she said said she was surprised by all the fuss on her birthday. "I don't suppose you think I'm very old because I'm not," she said. "I was born in Carnegie and my daddy worked in the butcher shop there.

"We lived upstairs above the shop and we went down the stairs with Aunty Floss to the park for games. Daddy used to tell me to fetch the butcher paper but one day I fell over and we lost all the paper.

"I had two sisters, Violet and Marjorie and a big brother. I remember school and I did okay, I passed all the tests. They wouldn't let us go past the sixth grade and the teachers told us that girls should do the housework.

"I can see the clothes we used to wear to a college, we had a uniform but I didn't like wearing a hat because I had curly hair. Somebody said gee you're lucky to have curly hair like that and I said I was born like that. I was rather a pretty little girl, I had curls like Shirley Temple, I remember that.

"The boys used to torment the life out of us at Sunday School. At school, girls and boys were kept separate so boys could never play with the girls.

Esma also lived in Hastings, Edithvale and Seaford so it is no surprise she remembers going to the beach a lot. "We used to go to the beach because we lived near the beach," she said.

During her working life, Esma was a dressmaker and a milliner. "I remember making hats and when people came in and said I want a hat I would say I will get my teacher.The teacher had to do that.

"There was one bloke who used to come in

2. You Were Never Really Here. Reminiscent of Taxi Driver, this is a taut, brutal yet profoundly moving film about a traumatized veteran and enforcer who gets tangled in a child abduction conspiracy. It's rare to find a film that so vividly conveys hope being wrenched away, beauty in death or tenderness coexisting with harsh, unglamorous violence.

1. Upgrade. A compelling, offbeat cyberpunk thriller with crackling dialogue, superbly-composed action and grungy atmosphere laced with dark humour and body horror. The plot is astoundingly efficient: the tension escalates smoothly on multiple fronts, and culminates in an indescribably brilliant final twist.

10. The Night Comes For Us. A blisteringly intense Indonesian martial arts thriller, this may be the best example of thriller-as-horror - in the grim, oppressive tone it generates and

Potential Leasing of an Area of Land Yarra Ranges Council will consider a report on a potential leasing of an area of land in Fairway Park, Coldstream, and to begin a community engagement process, at a public Council meeting on 18 December, 2018 at the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre in Lilydale.

The proposal involves an approximately 4000 square metre sized area of clear, grassed land behind the Coldstream Preschool at Fairway Park (part 12 Kelso Street, Coldstream).

The potential lessee is Lyrebird College, which aims to establish a learning facility for children with an Autism Spectrum Disorder on the site. Lyrebird College is proposed to lease for five years with a possible second four-year term.

A community engagement process would also begin, with letters being posted to Coldstream residents and advertisements posted in local media outlets along with Council’s social media channels.

Kicking goals for women Pre-season for the Healesville Women's Football team has got off to a flying start with a great group of women meeting to train each Wednesday night at the Bloods training ground on Don Road.

"It's been so exciting to see how many women are interested ... we are going to make a great team," Ali Bryan said.

She's led the coaching sessions to start the season.

At the last session the women made an effort to donate products to the Christmas Healesville Inter-Church Community Care Inc (HICCI) drive.

They brought women's hair, beauty and hygiene products to training to give to women that need the extra support at Christmas.

"Christmas time can be a stretch when you are raising a family and women can experience difficulties for all sorts of reasons at this time of year," player Josette O'Donnell said.

"We want our team to be an example of how women can look out for each other and show support."

Early next year, the sponsorship drive for the Healesville Women's team will start and the group is looking for local businesses or groups that are keen to put their name to the side.

"The team have already talked about their values - and we are all here for similar reasons, to be connected to community, to stay active and enjoy the sport," O'Donnell said.

"Some of the girls have played at high school or in the Eastern Ranges Competition but many of us are new to the game.

"Life can be hectic for women, and women's footy training can be a great escape and way to enjoy yourself."

The team would like to encourage any woman interested in joining.

There is no age limit or fitness requirement.

"We want to build a big team so that we can support each other to have a great season," Bryan said.

Bickley bags a win

By Ron Hottes In Warburton Golf Club's Wednesday 12 December stableford competition, Tony Bickley made a welcome return and reminded everyone what a good player he is.

He amassed 38 points, but only won on a count-back from perennial runner-up Des Ray. Ray has hit a rare vein of form recently.

Balls went down to 35.

Nearest the pin winners were Happy Gilmore on the ninth, Danny Fox with his second shot on the sixth, and Bickley on the 15th.

In the twilight competiton, Paul Long is another member who has struck form.

His 24 points over the back nine should see his handicap shrink.

Father Christmas visits Yarra Ranges Athletics

By Jamie Strudley The inclement weather on Friday 15 December did not deter Father Christmas from turning up at Morrison Reserve in Mount Evelyn, much to the delight of Yarra Ranges Athletics athletes.

A modified program kept interest high, the pace fast and the fun full before Santa stole the limelight. Little Athletics will return on Saturday 12 January.

Senior athletes were set to compete at round eight of AV Shield, but the storm on Friday evening flooded Lakeside Stadium, while thunderstorms and heavy rain on Saturday afternoon resulted in the competition being abandoned.

The next round of AV Shield will be at Glenhuntly on Saturday 12 January.

Yarra Ranges Athletics had three teams competing at the State Relay Championships.

Its under-11 girls competed in the four by 200 metres.

Gemma, Steph, Sasha and Zoe finished third in their heat in 2.08.40 with an automatic qualifier to final.

This time was one second faster than at regions.

with Santa Claus

What is something people don’t know about you?

Once the hard work of delivering toys is done for the year, I take a little break and enjoy a few glasses of Yarra Valley wine. I drink in moderation, of course! Paired with cheese and crackers, it’s hard to beat.

What was your most memorable moment?

Rudolph’s nose was on the fritz one night, and I very nearly crashed the sleigh into the top of Mt Dandenong. Thankfully the other reindeer took up the slack and we swerved just in time.

No one would have found me for days in that dense bushland!

What would your last meal be?

The Christmas in July special smorgasbord at the Cuckoo in Olinda. The only thing better than Christmas in December is Christmas in July!

What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness?

I’ve been lucky enough to be around for quite a few decades, so there’s not much I’ve missed in the past. In the present - a gift - my Santasense keeps me in the loop. In the future, I’d like to witness all the good boys and girls of the Yarra Ranges opening their Christmas presents this year. It always brings me so much joy to see the smiles on their faces.

What is your favourite movie?

Love Actually. I’ll never forgive Harry for buying that necklace for Mia, but gosh there are some heart-warming moments! And Hugh Grant’s dancing gives me the giggles every time.

Which toy should parents buy for their children this Christmas?

Well there are plenty of popular toys out there, and I’m sure I’ll be delivering plenty of them, but I like toys that get children outside in the fresh air - especially in the beautiful hills and valley! A bike, a cricket set, a shell pool ...

What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party?

It’s hard to go past the classic choc chip - plenty of chocolate! - but I do like a fancy bickie to mix things up. A white-choc macadamia cookie goes down nicely with a cold glass of milk.

IT’S NONE OF OUR BUSINESS BUT…

Merry meerkats We're all familiar with Elf on the Shelf and the dozen other Christmas traditions that have spawned from it, but you might not have come across meerkats in Main Street.

The little critters are all dressed up and ready to celebrate Christmas, and can be spotted on Maroondah Highway in Healesville near a little red door at the base of a tree.

We're unsure who dressed them up in such festive attire, but we love the Christmas cheer.

Card designed by Liam and Grace

By Michael Doran Two young Healesville residents have put their artistic skills to good use by designing Casey MP Tony Smith’s 2018 Christmas Card.

Liam and Grace Bowness, aged 11 and 10, live with cystic fibrosis and met Mr Smith during a campaign last year to have an expensive medication placed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Ultimately the drug was placed on the PBS, reducing the cost from more than $290,000 to $480 annually.

In September, Mr Smith contacted the family and asked if Liam and Grace would like to design his card for the year, an opportunity they grabbed with both hands.

Their mum, Kirsty, said the most daunting part was to get them to come up with one design they could agree on.

“It was such an honour to be asked and Liam and Grace really enjoyed the process," she said.

"We suggested they draw their own picture and then join up the best of each to make the final one and that’s what they did.

“When they saw the picture of Tony Smith handing the card to the Prime Minister they couldn’t believe it was their card, they were so excited about that.

“Tony Smith has been really supportive of our cause so that makes this even more special.”

Liam and Grace attend St. Brigid’s School in Healesville, which also mounted a letters campaign in support of the listing on the PBS. Asked if this was the start of a career in the arts for the pair, Kirsty said “perhaps, it’s a good way to start”.

A diamond couple shine Clive worked alongside him for 22 years and took over the business when Ron retired at age 69.

Clive relocated to Inverloch with his family and the business is still going strong after 50 years.

Ron and Irene's youngest daughter, Debra, was born in Seville and now lives on Phillip Island with her family.

Michelle moved to Cairns 20 years ago and Ron and Irene spend the Melbourne winters with her.

Irene worked for Adams Farms in Coldstream, berry farms in Seville and Rochford Winery.

Irene and Ron Morris celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on 6 December.

The Wandin North couple celebrated the diamond milestone with friends and family at the Crown Hotel in Lilydale.

Ron and Irene arrived in Australia in 1966 with their children Michelle, 4 and Clive, 3, and settled in Seville after a year.

They've called Wandin North home for the past 30 years.

Ron did various jobs including concreting and building caravans before returning to his trade of landscape gardening and starting Supreme Landscapes in 1968.
