CHRISTMAS IN NARRE WARREN AND FOUNTAIN GATE

Have a cozy Christmas Father and son business owners Zaman and Yaser Fazil wish all their customers a merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year. Zaman and Yaser have owned and managed Cozy Indoor Outdoor Furniture in Narre Warren for nine years. It’s a family business journey that Yaser says has been “epic“. “We love seeing happy customers who know they can come to our store and purchase furniture that will be stylish and comfortable as they entertain their friends and families,“ he said. “Customers keep referring us to their family and friends so this has been an epic journey.“ Cozy Furniture used to be The Outdoor Furniture Specialists. Zaman and Yaser have rebranded and expanded the store’s range now stocking both indoor and outdoor furniture as well as giftware and accessories. “We always have each other’s back and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,“ said Yaser. “We encourage one another to push our limits.“ An accountant, Zaman has always been self-employed. “Not many shops have a large range of outdoor furniture and we believed we could bring value to customers as they can visit one shop and have a large range to choose from,“ Zaman explained. Yaser has a sales and marketing degree and worked for Coles and a high end rug business

Marco Ciavarella is the face of fresh food in Narre Warren North.

Fresh food king in store Zaman and Yaser have a great range of furniture perfect for outdoor entertaining. 187924 before joining his father in the furniture business. “At Cozy Furniture we pride ourselves on offering top quality products, exclusive designs and exeptional customer service as well as outstanding after sales service,“ said Yaser. Zaman and Yaser say the furniture industry is challenging but that they both love a challenge. “Along this journey we have seen so many trends and learnt how the furniture can portray someone’s personality.“

Nourishing people with good, wholesome food runs in Marco Ciavarella’s blood. Marco, wife Annette and son Anthony own Marco’s IGA plus Liquor in Narre Warren North. This year the store celebrated its 10th anniversary. Prior to opening the supermarket in 2008, the family ran a general store in the same Narre Warren North shopping strip. Marco loves the grocery business. He is proud of what he has created, which is a store where fresh food is the star of the show. The Ciavarellas employ 48 staff, 80 per cent of whom live in the local area. Marco believes it is his commitment to freshness and price that allows his supermarket to compete with the likes of Woolworths and Coles. “We can definitely compete with them on specials, there is no doubt about it across all departments from fruit and vegetables to li-

quor and deli right through to meat.“ What really sets Marco's IGA apart however, is its old-fashioned service. One of Marco’s employees goes each day to the wholesale markets to collect fresh fruit and vegetables. He also employs two butchers and has five staff working on-site preparing fresh meals. He says the demand for fresh, ready-to-eat meals is one of the biggest changes of the past decade. “People aren’t cooking as much as they used to so we have taken our great deli and prepared meal area to next level.“ With Christmas nearly here, Marco says now is the time to place orders for fresh seafood and meat. Marco will take a day off on 25 December then customers can be assured he will be back at work, with the doors open on Boxing Day feeding a grateful Narre Warren North community.

CHRISTMAS IN NARRE WARREN AND FOUNTAIN GATE

Christmas charity help Paul Furlong and his family use the profits from their aquarium business to fund an extraordinary charity helping some of the poorest people in the world. Paul, his wife Julie and sons Caleb and Benjamin operate Lots of Fins Aquarium in Narre Warren. Profits help support the family’s charity, Revive the Kids. Paul travels to the poorest countries around the world and rescues slave families, orphaned children and desolate villages from desperate situations. He started his charity work about six and a half years ago and since then has built 23 orphanages that help with kids’ training and education. He has also freed over 400 slaves and helped to re-home and educate about 250 orphans in countries such as Africa, Nepal, Pakistan, Burma, India, and the Philippines. Paul started Revive the Kids in a reaction to other charities that he saw as ineffective and bloated by administration and operational costs that stopped money from going where it was most needed. “If I see a desperate need, my heart just melts and I can’t leave without doing something, he said. “I work with someone I trust and I set up a freehold for families of slaves, help in businesses, build orphanages or schools, I’ve had a few sewing centers and training centers.

The attack took place after the Carols by Candlelight. 188298 "The police have a big job, but are limited in what they can do." The family have been in Pakenham for 21 years and the two boys attended a local school together. It's the first time any family member has fallen victim to crime in that time. "We hear of it all happening everywhere else, and read about it on Facebook, but you never expect it to hit home like this. I can't even begin to put myself in their shoes, they were absolutely terrified.

"And for it to happen at the carols too - we had been there all night with them but I left about half an hour earlier to take my younger son home. "You shouldn't have to warn your child to watch their back, but that's what it has come to." Police say a local secondary school is helping police identify some of the school-aged suspects. Detectives investigating the incident say they have strong leads on persons involved.

They also noted that behaviour at the Pakenham Carols by Candlelight was good and that this is was an isolated incident. "The behaviour on the night was great, this is the only negative incident from the night. Apart from this, it was a really good night," Senior Detective Beard said. The stolen watch, which was a graduation gift from the victim's parents. 188689

12386173-RC19-18

Pakenham's annual Carols by Candlelight has been marred after two young attendees fell victim to a terrifying gang robbery at the conclusion of the festive event. The victims, two 18-year-old friends from Pakenham, were walking across Toomuc Reserve at the conclusion of the fireworks display when they were approached by two young males which they described as being of African appearance. The two strangers then allegedly attempted to start a fight, repeatedly telling the two victims to "hit" them. "They kept saying 'hit me, hit me' but my son and his friend aren't like that, and they said no," the mother of one of the teen victims said. "They then singled out the two boys - one had my son and the other had his friend. My son ended up getting trapped and shouldered into a rail. "The next minute there was about 20 of them around him, holding him up against a fence and fossicking in his pockets." The male holding the other friend then demanded his watch; when he refused, he threatened to hurt his friend. He then handed the watch over. "That watch had just been given to my son's friend by his parents for his graduation; he was absolutely shattered. But at least you can replace a watch - you can't replace a life," the mother continued. "They were both very rattled - my son didn't go to work today. We reported it to the police, but they told us that because they were all likely underage they will just get a slap on the wrist and let go.

It was an honour to win it.” It’s not Ms Beard’s first visit to the Pakenham Cup. “Pakenham has always been very kind to me over the years - though this was my first time at the new track.” Anna Campbell and Kelly Carty were the ‘Mature Lady of the Day’ runners up. Frocks, fascinators and fedoras vied to grab the attention of judges at the 2018 Inspire Pilates for Women Fashions on the Field at the Pakenham Cup. Richmond’s Michael McAlpine took out the best male outfit, wearing a vibrant Arthur Galan suit jacket and pants, a Jack London waistcoat, tie from Mickey Blue in Mornington, pocket square made by Ian Parsons, fedora from Head to Toe Camberwell, a tie pin designed by Tatiana Hoffman, and a pair of binoculars as a finishing touch. “I’ve been doing fashions for ten years now; this has been my eighth win since the Caulfield Cup this year and my 11th placing since October,” Mr McAlpine said proudly. “I got the jacket last week - I saw it in the shop window on Chapel Street and just knew I had to have it - and designed the outfit around the jacket. “The key is that you have to look like you’re at the races, you have to aspire to the jockeys’ silks - not copy them, but replicate the popping colours and patterns that they do.” Ben Carbonaro and Jordan Tichy came second and third place as ‘Best Dressed Man’. Michelle Robinson took home the ‘Lady of the Day’ title, while Brooke Walter and Kiara Manning came a close second and third. “I was wrapped to win, it was a very tough field at Pakenham; the ladies really brought their A Game and the judges had a hard time deciding a winner,” Ms Robinson said. “It started with the dress; I really loved the print when I saw it in Myer and from there I designed and made the hat myself - I’m a hobby milliner. I’ve always loved the races and fashion, which is where my love for making hats started. “I already had the shoes and clutch in my wardrobe which was a bonus!” Hailing from Tarneit, Ms Robinson has been attending country racing meetups all her life. “My first country race was when I was a few months old, so I’ve been going all my life really.” Michael and Kelly Carty took out the ‘Best Dressed Couple’ category, followed by couples Harvis McGeagh and Chloe Wassycko, and Dean and Maria Stewart. “I bought the hat two years ago but I didn’t have the right dress to go with it!“ Ms Carty said. “This year I found a lovely dress that matched perfectly; then my husband got his outfit from Roger David and matched it to my colour scheme. “We’ve been married for 21 years and have had six children together - three boys and two girls. This is a nice thing that we do just the two of us; it brings us together.“ Langwarrin South resident Jenny Beard took out the top honour as ‘Mature Lady of the Day’ for an outfit she admits was a rather last minute one. “I wasn’t going to go originally; my sister was visiting from Darwin and I hadn’t planned an outfit until that morning. My sister laughed at me winning because she’d watched me running around half an hour before getting ready,” she said with a laugh.

Growth will deliver goods By Brendan Rees Australia's leading demographer told a crowded business breakfast "Our culture is continually changing and in business you need to read those changes". Bernard Salt, a former partner at KPMG, and a well-known writer, media personality and business advisor, was the guest speaker at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Wednesday 28 November. He routinely appears as a commentator on a variety of business/current affair TV shows in Australia. In business, Mr Salt's specialties lie in tracking and understanding Australian demographics and the rest of the world. Mr Salt spoke about the evolution of consumer cultures, how the most recent generation will fit into today's business world and how companies can get the most out of their customer base and employees. "Over the last 10 years while you have been in business, conducting your life in this region, this region has added a 144,000 people; a city the size of Geelong in 10 years," he said. "Here is a place to be in business," he added. With the "bucket load of kids" to come, he says people "need to be in child minding, you need to be in kindergarten provision, you need to be in obstetrics, you need a big hospital I would've have thought - it's not rocket science." According to the latest census data, Mr Salt says Dandenong, which was "once the great manufacturing heartland of the Australian continent" offered 66,000 jobs - up 12,000 from 2011 to 2016. Logistics and warehousing made up the bulk of jobs, he said. "Dandenong is reinventing itself" and "adaptable to the new reality." "It's undulating land, house and land packages with a three or a four in front of it, can ac-

What I want is Melbourne's third airport ... at some point before it gets to 10 million people in 2066; there will be a requirement for a third airport," he said. "The greatest job centre growth in the state of Western Australia in the last five years; it's not the Kimberley's, it's not the Pilbara, it's not the Perth CBD, it's Perth's airport and precinct." Mr Salt's unique skill is to take the latest data and the transfer this into a highly entertaining, informative and relevant presentation on what the future environment will be for both businesses and individuals. "Tapware is now the new silverware ... You have the show kitchen and then you have the real kitchen behind in the butler's pantry. "Bunnings, Harvey Norman - they are the

businesses to have been in over the last decade as Australians transformed themselves." In terms of the changing culture of food, he says, when the Greek-Italians arrived here in the 1950s "we regarded their food as wog food, by the 1980s actually your food is better than our food." Mr Salt sees the future not just through numbers and trends, but by looking to the past. But the real trick, he says, is creating a narrative. "In order to share in the prosperity of modern Australia you need either a university degree or technical training. These are knowledge workers," he explained. "Which cities on the continent would offer most knowledge worker jobs? That would be Sydney and Melbourne. That is why Melbourne is the third largest growing city of its type, on the plant today. "We offer affordable housing and offer knowledge worker jobs. The greatest threat to

Australia I think is a break-down of social cohesion - the idea that we are evolving into a place of winners and losers. "That's not the Australia I want. I want an Australia where everyone believes they have a chance at prosperity. Which places on the Australia continent actually deliver that dream? Casey Cardinia, and a couple of other equivalents around the country," he said. According to data, Mr Salt says Australia is the 14th largest economy on earth: "We have the means to buy what we want. You can see that in the four bedroom; two bedroom house in place like Cranbourne and Cardinia," he said. He predicts in 10 years' time Australia will have jumped two places in the economy rankings, where "we are bigger than Russia" "This is a good place to be for another generation in fact," he added.

Healthy year for helpers By Jessica Anstice St John of God Hospital Auxiliary finished a successful year with their annual luncheon on Wednesday, 28 November. The luncheon was held at Akoonah Park Centre with more than 120 people in attendance. Auxiliary group president Trish Nicholson welcomed guests and thanked everyone for the support of the hospital. She also acknowledged the donations of vouchers and gifts as prizes for the raffles. Five hospital carers attended including director of mission Rhonda O'Connor. Special guest, director of maternity and

clinical redevelopment manager Allison Merrigan gave a talk on the update of the hospital, starting since the hospital opened 705 babies have been born including 21 babies in two days. "There are over 100 volunteers who meet and greet patients, assisting them to find their way around the hospital," Ms Merrigan said. A lovely thoughtful deed has been set up to assist patients in Palliative Care called Dream a Little Dream, a project where the patient can indulge in a little pampering such as reflexology, a manicure, make up or a massage. Around $1200 was raised at the luncheon. Anyone looking to join the auxiliary can contact Anne Crockett on 9707 3425.

RAY’S SAY

On 3 December, a story was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about Casey Council identifying a minor miscalculation of council rates for 2018/19. Here is how some readers reacted online: Tanya Narelle: Lol Cardinia did the same thing I think, not much to individuals but a bit to the councils. Lindsey Davis: It will cost you more to fix the error, why bother? Lynette White: Wow 22 cents. Cassidy Grace: 22 cents per property? Just make next years 22 cents cheaper across the board and save the money fixing it now. Michele Tobin: Lisa Summers, Christine Mich and Daniel Summers - better start planning what to spend your 22 cents on. Marianne Macumber: Just keep my 22 cents. It will cost more in wages and paperwork and or electricity to do it. Tracie Battye: Graeme Battye you should be able to retire soon, we should be getting a refund from the council. Sue Baldizoni: How much is it going to cost to 'rectify' rates by 22 cents to each rate payer ? Seems ludicrous to me... Leong Ng: Just paid my rates lately and yes... It was adjusted by a few miserable cents. Lol. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Robinson Road made safer By Jessica Anstice Robinson Road in Harkaway has been successful for funding from the 2018/19 Federal Government Infrastructure Black Spot Program. A guard rail will be built along Robinson

Road, south of Halleur Road and the road shoulders will be sealed. A black spot is typically defined as a location having at least three casualty collisions over the preceding five year period. In August 2017, City of Casey council offi-

cers submitted three sites to VicRoads for consideration for the Black Spot Program. The proposed projects included Robinson Road, south of Halleur Road in Harkaway, Warneet Road, south of Baxter-Tooradin Road in Warneet and James Cook Drive, at the inter-

section with Sydney Parkinson Avenue in Endeavour Hills. Project delivery has now commenced for the Robinson Road project and it is expected that it will be delivered on time and within budget this financial year.

Approximately 30 Narre Warren South P-12 College students worked consecutively on building a teardrop caravan before selling it for $8500. Across classes such as Product Design and Building and Construction the students undertook various jobs that consisted of: Designing Modification Evaluation Manufacturing Construction Electronics Installations Construction folio and user manual

With some students working on the camper during lunchtimes and after school hours, this project was an engaging experience. "The profit or money is not what we focus on, more importantly the simulation the students are exposed to, the skills and knowledge they have gained and the experiences that can contribute to their future careers through this process," college VCAL leader Sharon Phillips said. The previous model sold for $8000 and the proceeds went to a new electronic wheelchair for Year 12 student Ace. This was made possible through the VCAL Pay it forward program that has been actively raising funds for disadvantage causes since the early 2000's.

Golden lesson for teachers By Brendan Rees When Ray and Raylene Heathcote met at Burwood Teachers College as students, they knew they were in for the long haul. Today, the Berwick couple have spent 50 years together as husband and wife after marrying at St Bede's Church in Balwyn North in 1968. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday 7 December with family and close friends. Ray is an avid cartoonist, having published his first cartoon in the Berwick News about Michael Tuck, a seven-time premiershipwinning VFL player for Hawthorn Football Club in 1990. Since then, he has been cartooning for the newspaper editions of the Cranbourne,

Berwick, and Pakenham-Officer Star News in 'Ray's Say'. "Dad says drawing cartoons was initially a way of helping children learn to read," his daughter Tyrell Heathcote said. "After he retired this continued in the form of cartooning workshops he was invited to run at many of the schools in the area." The couple, who have four children; Tyrell, Gina, Kellie and Ben, have had long and impressive careers in the education department. Raylene was a principal at Don Bosco Primary School in Narre Warren while Ray has been a principal and acting principal at a number of schools in the area, with his longest stint with Hallam Valley Primary School in the 90s. Ray then became a district liaison principal

while Raylene shifted to an English and literature curriculum consulting role for the Catholic Education Office. Tyrell, who contacted Star News to surprise her parents by publishing this story, recalled there was no family holiday or even a trip to the supermarket "without bumping into a past student for a hello and a chat, making this a welcome way to share their anniversary news with their many past students and Ray's Say fans." Ray is the current Berwick RSL's welfare officer and past president from 2012-2015. He was also president of the Victorian Principals Federation in the 90s. Raylene was a volunteer for St Michael's after school First Communion classes.

Living with two sets of clothing while looking after rescued cats for the past month, has not been easy for Daniela Maslen. The 2nd Chance Cat Rescue founder and her husband are hoping they can turn their luck around by Christmas after being left homeless in November. The couple were ready to move into their new property in Cranbourne until the sale of their Hampton Park home had fallen through. "Not knowing where you will be any day is a bit heartbreaking," Ms Maslen said. "Our cats are not happy to be locked away in enclosures for four weeks." According to Ms Maslen, the buyers were "in the process of getting a loan together." The couple have now been told settlement will be on Wednesday 12 December however "nothing is confirmed in writing." Meanwhile, they have been living in accommodation in Harkaway with their personal belongings stored in semi-trailers. "Our cars are packed to the max with all the belongings which did not fit into the semi-trailer," Ms Maslen said. "It's quite strange when you are left with only a spare set of clothing and you have to make do with what you have. "We never thought it would be this long. We thought it maybe three or four days. "Cats can adjust quite well but I would feel awful if I would be locked away in a small room for four weeks," she added. Ms Maslen said she has been running her not-for-profit organisation with "great difficulties." "How do you run a business which needs access to a PC, internet and phone when nothing is available? "I now have to use the Library PC's and internet to do all my e-mails, and keeping the rescue afloat," she said. Christmas is the busiest time of year for 2nd Chance Cat Rescue with more than 100 cats and kittens in care, Ms Maslen said. "This time we only have about 40 which means a lot of kittens may still be homeless. "I would like to say a big thanks to all rescue groups who have come aboard and networked with 2nd Chance Cat Rescue to take in cats we were not able to accommodate." Calendars are a major fundraiser for 2nd Chance Cat Rescue during this time of year which can be purchased online at https://2ndchancecatrescue.bigcartel.com or the Pound Road Veterinary Clinic in Hampton Park.

Urgent call for hamper help By Jessica Anstice

school holidays all fall at the same time. "Something has got to give." Many families are already living on a shoe string budget and find it hard to extend their expenses so that they can enjoy such special treats. Children don't get to do the 'cool' stuff in the holidays and often miss out on presents altogether. The organisation has been encouraging those that can afford to, to buy a little extra in the shop over the next couple of weeks to donate to the appeal. All donations can be dropped off at the Casey North Community Information and Support Service Victor Crescent, Narre Warren site and if you don't have time to shop but want to donate, you can do so by visiting their website www.caseynorthciss.com.au and making a cash donation.

Narre Warren North carols By Jessica Anstice The Narre Warren North Uniting Church Christmas Carols on Saturday was a night to behold, with around 1000 people in attendance. The whole night was organised by dedicated volunteers. The carols have been running for 28 years and have been well supported by three group's long term including the Rotary Club of Narre Warren, Narre Warren North CFA and the Cranbourne Lions Concert Band. The Cranbourne Chorale, the Cranbourne Lions Concert band and individual local artists all performed beautifully on the night. "I'd like to thank and congratulate all of the volunteers who put together the event, and for all of the work they do to make our community such as great please to live," City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said. "Christmas is a wonderful time of year. It is a time for families, friends and community to come together in celebration of the peace and harmony which we enjoy each day in Casey. "It's a time for giving, and a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ." Narre Warren North Uniting Church minis-

ter Rev. Bruce Crowle said the singing and the band were "awesome" and one of the highlights was Monique with her operatic rendition of They Prayer. "The way various community groups come together to put the carols on is a huge highlight," Mr Crowle said. "There is a huge amount of background work done by magnificent volunteers. "It is also a chance to highlight the birth of Jesus Christ, God's gift for the world and our hope for peace."

PROPERTY NEWS

CAEDLIN’S GENEROUS CHRISTMAS GIFT UNDERPRIVILEGED children will share the excitement of unwrapping a gift on Christmas morning thanks to the generosity of one Timbertop youngster. When Caedlin Collins recently turned eight she knew just what she wanted to do with the presents she received - donate them to the Parklea Christmas Gift Drive. Caedlin saw a sign advertising the gift drive at Cardinia Life in Officer and didn’t hesitate suggesting to her mum, Alison, that she donate some of her presents so they could be regifted this Christmas. “I donated my gifts because I thought is wasn’t fair that lots of homeless people don’t get presents,“ Caedlin explained. “It makes me feel good.“ Caedlin said the school and calisthenics friends invited to her animal disco party were supportive of her idea to donate to the gift drive. “My friends didn’t say anything but they all bought presents for the gift drive,“ Caedlin said. And her message for those children who will benefit from her generosity? “I hope you like the present and I hope you play with it,“ she said, with a huge smile. Parklea Sales and Marketing Manager Jarod Mills encouraged others to follow Caedlin’s generous lead. “This time of year is hard for many families. At Parklea we think it is important to give back to the community and I congratulate Caedlin for her wonderful donation. I am sure her generosity will bring joy to many children this Christmas.“ Mr Mills said this year donations would be shared between Windermere and the taskforce of community organisations putting together hampers in the wake of the closure of the 4C’s Foodbank. Donations to the Parklea Christmas Gift

Blind students’ zoo visit The recent visit to the Melbourne Zoo by students of Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired (Berwick), gave a glimpse into the approach the centre takes with its students. Sixteen-year-old Noah O'Brien took on the responsibility of organising the zoo visit. Noah is vision impaired, but with the help of magnifying technology, he was able to access the zoo website, maps, and animal feeding times to plan the end-of-year trip to the zoo on Monday, 3 December. "The school encourages us to be independent, so I was happy to research the zoo,' Noah said. "When we visited the animals and creatures, like butterflies, elephants, giraffes, penguins, limas and lizards, we feel, smell and hear what's going on and our teachers fill us in on the rest." Accompanying the Insight students to the zoo was teacher, Ilodi Jacobs who said the school's policy aims to "extend the students' learning through a range of experiences to provide a rounded education which prepares them for the transition to mainstream schools". "We teach the Victorian curriculum which covers the core subjects, as well the Extended Core Curriculum (ECC)," she said. "The ECC is designed specifically for children with a vision loss." The ECC encompasses social interaction skills, compensatory skills, independent living skills, orientation and mobility, self-determination and advocacy, assistive technology skills, recreation and leisure, sensory efficiency skills, current education and transition skills. For Noah, who graduates from Insight this year, he's excited about the future, especially in pursuing his interest in sci fi movies. Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, in Berwick, is Victoria's only specialist school for the blind

FOCUS ON … CHRISTMAS IN PAKENHAM

Aspire's festive celebration

Noah’s Ark strives to build better futures for children with disabilities.

Supporting children For more than 45 years, Noah’s Ark has been providing therapy and support services for children with disabilities and additional needs. The Noah’s Ark team recognises that families play an important role in children’s health and development. Their team of specialists known as key workers - have backgrounds in speech pathology, occupational therapy, education, physiotherapy, psychology and social work. Key Workers work with families to make sure they have the information, resources and support to help their child learn and reach their goals. Noah’s Ark was started in 1971 as the ‘Noah’s Ark Toy Library for Handicapped Children’ and was run by a small group of parents of children with a disability.

Noah’s Ark co-founder Annetine Forell, a parent of a child with a disability, as well as co-founder Mary Glue, saw the need for family support and established toy libraries for children with a disability. The service recognised the importance of play in a child’s development and provided a place for families to discuss the challenges of parenting. As a leader in the disability sector, Noah’s Ark is committed to developing the organisation, exceeding their targets and meeting the challenges ahead. Noah’s Ark Pakenham is located at 87 Treloar Lane, Pakenham. For more information please call 1800 819 140 or visit www.noahsarkinc.org.au.

Christmas is coming to Aspire Childcare Pakenham this Saturday 15 December. Families in the Pakenham community are invited to a special Christmas celebration at Aspire Pakenham, which is conveniently located next to Pakenham Station. Staff at Aspire place a strong emphasis on play based learning, providing children with a foundation that guides their educational growth and forms the basis for lifelong learning. Families will get an opportunity to take a free photo with Santa, and enjoy other complimentary activities including face painting, sausage sizzle with vegetarian options and a chance to win a special Christmas hamper full of products from local businesses! Families will also have a special opportunity to take a tour of Aspire Pakenham, meet

center director Sue Peterson and see the stateof-the-art facility. Ms Peterson said the new purpose-built centre was designed to provide families with a warm, nurturing and caring early learning environment. "Our centre honours the important role of the family and respects the trust that they place with our team," she said. "We believe in working together with our families to provide a relaxing environment that promotes quality care and education for every child, a place where they will be accepted for who they are and who they will become." Aspire Pakenham Christmas Celebration is on Saturday from 10am-12pm, at 75 Station Street, Pakenham. Call now for more information on 5922 2005.

Big Mike’s big Cup result By Russell Bennett

The winning connections of ‘Beauty Way’ (which took out the David Bourke Memorial Handicap) along with members of the Bourke family, and Pakenham Racing Club committee member Don Duffy. club - a record that still stands today. He had a lifelong involvement with the Pakenham Racing Club, and his legacy remains. He also served as chairman of the Victoria Racing Club from 1991 to 1998. He was instrumental in raising the profile of the Melbourne Cup internationally, and oversaw the first international invasion in 1993 when Vintage Crop took the Cup back to Ireland. Mr Bourke later described that day as one of the highlights of his career in racing. He retired from the VRC committee in 2002. Cranbourne pair Michael Kent (trainer) and Craig Williams (jockey), meanwhile, took out Race 8 on Saturday, the $150,000 Racing.com VOBIS Gold Bullion with Amadeus. All told, over $1 million in total prizemoney and trophies was awarded on the day. “It was our most successful Sportsbet Pakenham Cup day since the move to the new track,” said Pakenham Racing Club business development manager Wade Calderwood. “And it was underscored by over 4500 people having booked packages in a variety of our hospitality zones, and great racing with Our Big Mike saluting for the New Zealand trainer. “The weather held off nicely, the crowd behaviour was very good, and the disruptions to V Line didn’t appear to adversely affect our race patrons on the day.” Pakenham Racing Club chairman Simon Conn echoed Calderwood's thoughts, while also praising the "exceptional quality" of the fields in the day's races, the track surface, and the crowd behaviour. "It was a great day," he said. "The feedback we've received from the people who were there was just so positive."

Young Jye McNeil got the late call-up aboard ‘Our Big Mike’, and the pair stormed home to record a commanding win in this year’s Sportsbet Pakenham Cup. 188521 Pictures: ROB CAREW

Our Big Mike is the toast of the town after one hell of a big upset to claim this year’s $300,000 Sportsbet Pakenham Cup. Trained out of Rotorua, New Zealand by Craig Phelan, the six-year-old brown gelding controlled Saturday’s Cup from start to finish, ultimately winning by two lengths and stunningly setting a new 2500-metre track record in the process. The previous track record was set in January last year by Shampion at 2:36.83, while Our Big Mike’s new benchmark is 2:34.68. The result stunned the huge crowd that turned out to witness some of the biggest names in racing. It loomed as one of the best fields in the history of the Pakenham Cup, which was - in part - testament to the stand-alone Saturday meeting. Darren Weir, James Cummings and Godolphin, Gai Waterhouse, Ciaron Maher, and the Hayes and Dabernig team were all represented in the crack field - and Our Big Mike, the $11 chance, one-upped the lot of them. The highly-fancied Kiwia - out of the allpowerful Weir camp - entered the Cup having won most of the country cups on offer this year and was a last-start winner in the Ballarat Cup. But the five-year-old - part owned by the likes of Gerry Ryan (Jayco and Gumbuya World) and a trio of Melbourne Storm legends; Cam Smith, Billy Slater, and Will Chambers never really threatened, settled second last, and finished well back in seventh. Berisha ($10) finished second, just ahead of equal favourite (with Kiwia) Dal Harraild at $3.90. The result wasn’t just a spectacular one for Phelan and the rest of Our Big Mike’s connections. Jockey Jye McNeil wasn’t even set for the ride, but got the late call-up (and somewhat of an early birthday present) after Noel Callow suffered a fall on Wednesday. “This is something else, isn’t it?” Phelan told Racing.com in the mounting yard in the immediate aftermath of Pakenham’s biggest race. He added his horse had been set for the Pakenham Cup all along. “We thought we’d just target all the country cups,” he said, with more than a tinge of emotion in his voice. “But this one’s a bit special, alright. “He just keeps cruising at that same rate all day. “What a huge thrill.” Phelan added that his son, Shaun, and his partner Emily (Farr) are jumps jockeys back in New Zealand. “They gave me a kick in the backside and said ‘get over there dad, we’ve got to chase some of these country cups’ so I owe a huge thank you to them.” McNeil’s first thoughts post-race were with Callow, before going on to analyse the win telling Racing.com: “The key to today’s win was that he began well. There was good speed on paper and once he got to the front I knew he’d be hard to run down.” Phelan said he hadn’t thought any further than the Pakenham Cup when it came to his plans for Our Big Mike. “We haven’t thought any further than this,” he said. “Our heads are up in the clouds at the moment.” Sportsbet ambassador and former Western Bulldogs and Richmond AFL star Nathan Brown was on-hand to present the cup to Phelan and the connections - praising the Pakenham Cup in the process. Our Big Mike had career prizemoney of $117,319 entering the race. The first-place prize, alone, for the Cup was $180,000. Also on Cup Day, the Grahame Begg-trained Beauty Way - with Luke Currie on-board took out Race 6 on the card, the $100,000 Schweppes David Bourke Memorial Handicap, which holds a special place in the heart of those involved with the Pakenham Racing Club. Mr Bourke was just 19 when he replaced his father as the Pakenham Racing Club’s secretary, and was the youngest person to ever assume the role of secretary of a Victorian race

Power signing for Eagles By Nick Creely Big Piva has landed at Power Reserve. Piva Wright, the former Richmond rookie and Dandenong Stingray has put pen to paper at the Doveton Eagles in Southern Football League Division 2, and it's sure to keep plenty of defenders up at night throughout 2019. More recently, Wright, 25, plied his trade with Noble Park in the powerful Eastern Football League, topping the goal kicking for the Bulls with 38 majors in a terrific season in Division 1 for the power forward. Doveton Eagles president Shane McGrath said that the club was thrilled to welcome in someone with a quality character, and expects the high profile recruit to settle in well. "We're thrilled, he's a local guy who works at the local primary school, so it's been a really community focus for us - he ticks a lot of boxes, that's for sure," he said. Despite Noble Park's desperation to hold on to the power forward, McGrath said that Wright was keen to play with some mates. "It all happened really quickly - he's got some friends around the club, so that always helps when you get to play with mates," he said. The Eagles have managed to lure big names such as Nick Battle, Ryan Hendy, Darren Sheen and Russell Robertson to the club, and McGrath said it points to the culture and brand of footy that's been established at the club. The club is desperate to work its way up to Division 1, and won't take a backwards step. But, after losing Sheen to Kooweerup after

a brief stint at the club, the search was on for another power forward with the capability to kick big bags of goals. "We've worked really hard to be attractive to players wanting to come in, and that's (signing Wright) justification, i guess," he said. "As a club, we've got high ambitions - we want to improve our standards, and Piva brings it in that regard, so we're thrilled." The Eagles - who were runners-up in Div 2 this season - have also announced Scott Irvine, a wingman who has played with Kilsyth and Seville, highly rated tall forward Jye Siegersma, who also comes across from Kilsyth, as well as dynamic half-back Andrew Ray from Narre Warren, and will be gearing up for yet another assault at a premiership. "We've added some other quality players, and we're all about bringing in quality people too," he said. "Andy Ray has Southern experience and dominated Div 1 a few years ago, and Jye and Scott are great footballers who have put work and personal life before footy the last few years, and they are now more settled personally, so are looking to change their focus to footy a bit more." The Eagles are also keen to start an Under 19s side for 2019. If anyone is interested, contact Shane McGrath on 0466 459 360.

Gippsland Carnival launches in style Last Thursday’s launch of the third TRFM Gippsland Carnival, Australia’s biggest regional racing series, was a top-class night of entertainment with sporting royalty in attendance at Logan Park in Warragul. Former England cricket captain Sir Ian Botham captivated the crowd with stories of his cricketing career and the people he met along the way. He also spoke of his admirable charity work through Beefy’s Charity Foundation, in which he hosts fundraising events to support cancer research and treatment for youth with serious health conditions. In addition to Sir Ian Botham, former AFL footballer and greyhound racing ambassador, Brent Harvey, spoke of the secrets behind his longevity in AFL and how he has fallen in love with greyhound racing since coming on board with GRV. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Other highlights included RSN’s James Van de Maat discussing his love of greyhound racing and the art of a race call, stand-up comedian Marty Fields providing laughs throughout the evening, and a spectacular fireworks display to cap off the event. “It was a great night at Warragul last night and a wonderful feeling to have so many passionate supporters of greyhound racing in the one room,” said GRV chairman, Bernie Carolan. “To have people of the calibre of Sir Ian Botham and Brent Harvey supporting our sport really shows the direction we are heading and I’m looking forward to a fantastic Gippsland Carnival.” The Gippsland Carnival is the biggest regional racing series in Australia and consists of Country Cups in Sale (26 December), War-

ragul (12 January), Traralgon (26 January), and Cranbourne (9 February); and there were representatives from each of these clubs at the event to celebrate the launch of this exciting series which highlights greyhound racing in the Gippsland area. And all the action kicks off with the $75,000 GOLD FM Sale Cup on Boxing Day. The Sale Cup also promises to be a big event with star Melbourne ruckman, Max Gawn watching the races from the Trackside Party Paddock and spinning the wheel for one lucky person to get a chance to win $10,000 or a car. The following cups in Warragul, Traralgon and Cranbourne also have lucrative purses of $47,000 and will be attended by former Collingwood champion and 2011 Brownlow medallist, Dane Swan.

Experienced football administrator Darren Flanigan is back at the Dandenong Stingrays in his second stint as region talent manager at the TAC Cup club. The reigning premiers have appointed the 56-year-old former AFL ruckman back to Shepley Oval, replacing Mark Wheeler, who has joined the Sandringham Dragons. Flanigan played 130 games with Geelong from 1981 to 1991, before spending a season with St Kilda in 1992, adding a further eight games to his tally. Most recently, Flanigan had been doing some fine work as AFL Victoria's female football talent manager, where he oversaw the development and pathways of talented female footballers in the state, earning him high praise in the industry, as well as work with AFL International for the China Athlete Academy, where he served as operations manager. He has also served as a specialist coach with both Collingwood and Melbourne, where he has helped Flanigan's first stint as region manager of the Stingrays began in 2001 and ended 10 years later, replaced by Wheeler, who delivered the first ever TAC Cup premiership for the region in 2018. He will now work closely with new coach Nick Cox this pre-season in what looms as a new era for the club with the departure of premiership coach Craig Black, who has joined Collingwood as a development coach, and has already begun pre-season training with his players. The Stingrays have also announced highly regarded Rye senior coach Josh Moore as an assistant coach for 2019. Stingrays' premiership assistant Josh Bourke, a highly touted footy head and coaching prospect, has also departed, taking on the senior coaching role at Sandringham Dragons, alongside Wheeler once again.
