Have a cozy Christmas Father and son business owners Zaman and Yaser Fazil wish all their customers a merry Christmas and happy and safe New Year. Zaman and Yaser have owned and managed Cozy Indoor Outdoor Furniture in Narre Warren for nine years. It’s a family business journey that Yaser says has been “epic“. “We love seeing happy customers who know they can come to our store and purchase furniture that will be stylish and comfortable as they entertain their friends and families,“ he said. “Customers keep referring us to their family and friends so this has been an epic journey.“ Cozy Furniture used to be The Outdoor Furniture Specialists. Zaman and Yaser have rebranded and expanded the store’s range now stocking both indoor and outdoor furniture as well as giftware and accessories. “We always have each other’s back and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,“ said Yaser. “We encourage one another to push our limits.“ An accountant, Zaman has always been self-employed. “Not many shops have a large range of outdoor furniture and we believed we could bring value to customers as they can visit one shop and have a large range to choose from,“ Zaman explained. Yaser has a sales and marketing degree and worked for Coles and a high end rug business

Nourishing people with good, wholesome food runs in Marco Ciavarella’s blood. Marco, wife Annette and son Anthony own Marco’s IGA plus Liquor in Narre Warren North. This year the store celebrated its 10th anniversary. Prior to opening the supermarket in 2008, the family ran a general store in the same Narre Warren North shopping strip. Marco loves the grocery business. He is proud of what he has created, which is a store where fresh food is the star of the show. The Ciavarellas employ 48 staff, 80 per cent of whom live in the local area. Marco believes it is his commitment to freshness and price that allows his supermarket to compete with the likes of Woolworths and Coles. “We can definitely compete with them on specials, there is no doubt about it across all departments from fruit and vegetables to li-
quor and deli right through to meat.“ What really sets Marco's IGA apart however, is its old-fashioned service. One of Marco’s employees goes each day to the wholesale markets to collect fresh fruit and vegetables. He also employs two butchers and has five staff working on-site preparing fresh meals. He says the demand for fresh, ready-to-eat meals is one of the biggest changes of the past decade. “People aren’t cooking as much as they used to so we have taken our great deli and prepared meal area to next level.“ With Christmas nearly here, Marco says now is the time to place orders for fresh seafood and meat. Marco will take a day off on 25 December then customers can be assured he will be back at work, with the doors open on Boxing Day feeding a grateful Narre Warren North community.

A big crowd of Lynbrook residents gathered for a night of Christmas joy on Saturday 8 December. The annual carols event, hosted at Banjo Paterson Park in Lynbrook and organised by the Lynbrook Residents Association, was hailed a success. More than 500 people rolled out their rugs and blankets as they joined performers including Evolution Music, and Jessie and Michelle from Groove N Kids for a mix of Christmas Carols. Organiser Vanessa Watson said they were blessed with good weather despite heavy rain predicted. "Santa handed out six Cadbury chocolate sacks to the kids as presents and the elves had hundreds of lollies," she said. Fun included a free jumping castle, popcorn, fairy floss, and a free Moonlit Cinema screening of Disney's 'Mickey's Magical Christmas.' Ms Watson said they were close to cancelling the event for the first time in eight years. "We were blessed by Mother Nature; a storm rolled into Lynbrook at 3am that night and woke many of us up with a bang."
Christmas thief In a “blatant” day-light theft, a real life Grinch has swiped a life-size reindeer decoration from a Christmas display in front of dozens of shoppers. Karen, who asked for her surname not to be published, said she saw a man “jump out of the display with a reindeer in his hand” on the roof-top level of Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre on Monday 10 December, about 11.30am. “I yelled out ‘stop him.’ Everyone looked around and he gave me a funny look, and ran out the door into a black car,” she said. “He had it under his arm and hot-footed it out.”

Karen said she couldn’t believe the incident unfold before her eyes just as she had reached the top of the escalator above Kmart to go to her car. “I scurried as quickly as I could with my phone out, getting the camera up to try and get a shot of the car. Karen says she was about 30 metres away from the man, who acted alone when he took off with the reindeer. She said the man, described in his midtwenties to mid-thirties, dressed in dark “scruffy clothes,” medium build and about five foot, five inches, brown hair, ran to his car on the roof top.

What is the aim of the Tooradin Business Association and what projects do you hope to achieve in the near future? The TBA is currently working with Monash University Art, Design and Architecture department on a contemporary design for a new Marine Discovery/Visitor Centre in Tooradin. There will be a student design competition in first semester 2019. It will be a central attraction for tourism. We are also working on a reclamation project to build up the eroded banks of the Sawtell's estuary and make a picnic area and protect the car park, behind the northside shops and to provide a floating pontoon for the launch of kayaks and other water activities. What is something people don't know about you? I'm on the City of Casey Smart City Advisory Team, with the aim to make City of Casey Australia's most liveable city. I'm a member of the Australia China Business Council, on their Tourism Working Group and their Health and Medical Research Working Group. I'm on the Healesville to Phillip Island Nature Link Committee, working to create a bio-link of national significance connecting three of Victoria's iconic ecotourism attractions (Healesville Sanctuary, Puffing Billy and Phillip Island Nature Parks) via natural corridors on public and private land - Tooradin is also key location in the HPNL. What is your most memorable moment? When Anthony Byrne Fed MP kindly spoke in glowing terms in parliament recently about our work in Tooradin and the contributions from the Dolphin Research Institute and HPNL who are adding their expertise to our knowledge bank to protect our natural habitat - marine and flora and fauna.

What inspired you to launch the EcoFuture business? My co-founder, David Forscutt and I are passionate about making the world a better place by creating world-first, certified organic, nutraceutical (food) grade personal care products.

Home for Christmas By Brendan Rees Living with two sets of clothing while looking after rescued cats for the past month, has not been easy for Daniela Maslen. The 2nd Chance Cat Rescue founder and her husband are hoping they can turn their luck around by Christmas after being left homeless in November. The couple were ready to move into their new property in Cranbourne until the sale of their Hampton Park home had fallen through. "Not knowing where you will be any day is a bit heartbreaking," Ms Maslen said. "Our cats are not happy to be locked away in enclosures for four weeks." According to Ms Maslen, the buyers were "in the process of getting a loan together." "How do you run a business which needs access to a PC, internet and phone when nothing is available? "I now have to use the Library PC's and internet to do all my e-mails, and keeping the rescue afloat," she said. Christmas is the busiest time of year for 2nd Chance Cat Rescue with more than 100 cats and kittens in care, Ms Maslen said. "This time we only have about 40 which means a lot of kittens may still be homeless. "I would like to say a big thanks to all rescue groups who have come aboard and networked with 2nd Chance Cat Rescue to take in cats we were not able to accommodate." Young boy dies A child, believed to be from the Casey region, has died after falling from a boat into the water at Lake Eildon, in the tourist town of Bonnie Doon on Sunday 9 December. Police say the boy, 5, was pulled from the water about 1pm, however attempts to revive him at the scene were unsuccessful. The exact cause into the incident remains ongoing. Police will prepare a report for the Coroner.
Cop hunt for intruder Police hope CCTV images will identify a man responsible for an attempted aggravated burglary in Pearcedale. Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating the Thursday 11 October incident. Police allege about 8pm an unknown man has attempted kick a security door in to gain access to the Ellwood Road address while a 16 year old boy was home. The unknown man is described as 30 to 40 years of age, about six-foot tall, tanned complexion, with shaved/cropped hair, a full beard and an Australian accent. Police have released CCTV still images of a man who they believe may be able to assist with their investigation. Manhunt underway after home invasion Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an aggravated burglary in Cranbourne West on Saturday 8 December. Police have been told a number of people forced entry to a house on Monahans Road just after 9.30pm and stole a motorcycle. A second group of people also attended the address in relation to the motorcycle. Five people were home at the time and one person received minor injuries. No arrests have been made and the investigation remains ongoing.

Star, a seven-year-old thoroughbred mare was one of five horses available for adoption when Pearcedale's RSPCA shelter threw its doors open for its inaugural Horse Adoption Day on Saturday 8 December. Five tours were held at the sold-out event with three people submitting expressions of interest for horses. Star's racing career ended in 2015 due to injury and while she might not be winning prizes, she says "I sure am winning hearts; come and meet me and see for yourself."

Growth will deliver goods By Brendan Rees Australia's leading demographer told a crowded business breakfast "Our culture is continually changing and in business you need to read those changes". Bernard Salt, a former partner at KPMG, and a well-known writer, media personality and business advisor, was the guest speaker at the Casey Cardinia Business Breakfast at the Cranbourne Turf Club on Wednesday 28 November. He routinely appears as a commentator on a variety of business/current affair TV shows in Australia. In business, Mr Salt's specialties lie in tracking and understanding Australian demographics and the rest of the world. Mr Salt spoke about the evolution of consumer cultures, how the most recent generation will fit into today's business world and how companies can get the most out of their customer base and employees. "Over the last 10 years while you have been in business, conducting your life in this region, this region has added a 144,000 people; a city the size of Geelong in 10 years," he said. "Here is a place to be in business," he added. With the "bucket load of kids" to come, he says people "need to be in child minding, you need to be in kindergarten provision, you need to be in obstetrics, you need a big hospital I would've have thought - it's not rocket science." According to the latest census data, Mr Salt says Dandenong, which was "once the great manufacturing heartland of the Australian continent" offered 66,000 jobs - up 12,000 from 2011 to 2016. Logistics and warehousing made up the bulk of jobs, he said. "Dandenong is reinventing itself" and "adaptable to the new reality." "Which cities on the continent would offer most knowledge worker jobs? That would be Sydney and Melbourne. That is why Melbourne is the third largest growing city of its type, on the plant today. "We offer affordable housing and offer knowledge worker jobs. The greatest threat to
Australia I think is a break-down of social cohesion - the idea that we are evolving into a place of winners and losers. "That's not the Australia I want. I want an Australia where everyone believes they have a chance at prosperity. Which places on the Australia continent actually deliver that dream? Casey Cardinia, and a couple of other equivalents around the country," he said. According to data, Mr Salt says Australia is the 14th largest economy on earth: "We have the means to buy what we want. You can see that in the four bedroom; two bedroom house in place like Cranbourne and Cardinia," he said. He predicts in 10 years' time Australia will have jumped two places in the economy rankings, where "we are bigger than Russia" "This is a good place to be for another generation in fact," he added.

Golden celebration By Brendan Rees When Ray and Raylene Heathcote met at Burwood Teachers College as students, they knew they were in for the long haul. Today, the Berwick couple have spent 50 years together as husband and wife after marrying at St Bede's Church in Balwyn North in 1968. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday 7 December with family and close friends. Ray is an avid cartoonist, having published his first cartoon in the Berwick News about Michael Tuck, a seven-time premiership-winning VFL player for Hawthorn Football Club in 1990. Since then, he has been cartooning for the newspaper editions of the Cranbourne, Berwick, and Pakenham-Officer Star News in 'Ray's Say'. "Dad says drawing cartoons was initially a way of helping children learn to read," his daughter Tyrell Heathcote said. "After he retired this continued in the form of cartooning workshops he was invited to run at many of the schools in the area." The couple, who have four children; Tyrell, Gina, Kellie and Ben, have had long and impressive careers in the education department. Raylene was a principal at Don Bosco Primary School in Narre Warren while Ray has been a principal and acting principal at a number of schools in the area, with his longest stint with Hallam Valley Primary School in the '90s. Ray then became a district liaison principal while Raylene shifted to an English and literature curriculum consulting role for the Catholic Education Office. Tyrell, who contacted Star News to surprise her parents by publishing this story, recalled

Woman airlifted to hospital By Brendan Rees A woman in her forties was airlifted to hospital, when a car collided with a truck in Cardinia on Friday 7 December. Police and emergency services were called to the collision on Ballarto Road about 1.50pm. A CFA media spokesperson said firefighters from Clyde CFA extricated a woman who had been trapped by the feet in a ute. The woman was flown by air ambulance to The Alfred in a stable condition with soft tissue injuries and lacerations. The male truck driver was treated by paramedics at the scene. The exact cause of the collision will be investigated.

Casey Council will call on the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT) to knock back a planning application for new residential housing in Cranbourne North. Schutz Consulting Pty Ltd, a boutique planning firm, lodged plans with Casey Council in June this year proposing to subdivide a site on Alisma Boulevard into 138 residential house lots and provide for a population between 450500 people. The matter will go before VCAT after Schutz Consulting Pty Ltd lodged an appeal against Casey Council's "failure to determine the application within the prescribed time." Casey Council manager of statutory planning and building services Duncan Turner the site fell under the Cranbourne North Precinct Structure Plan which identified the land as an active open space/playing fields. "Council has been negotiating for some time with the developer to secure the land for this purpose," Mr Turner said. "Council cannot approve a planning application seeking subdivision of this land into residential lots as it is contrary to the approved structure plan. "The developer has chosen to pursue a course of legal review in an attempt to challenge their obligation under the approved structure plan. Council will continue to act in the best interests of the community in pursing assets for our growing population." At their 4 December meeting, Casey councillors voted unanimously to advise the permit applicant and VCAT that given the lack of active public open space facilities in the area as intended by the Cranbourne North Stage 2 Precinct Structure Plan, "a permit for further housing should not be issued." Would-be thieves have been caught on camera prowling the streets in Clyde North while trying door handles of parked cars during the early hours of Tuesday 4 December. The footage captured from a resident's home in Selandra Boulevard showed one the thieves getting into his wife's car, a Toyota, which had been accidentally left unlocked. "They saw it was unlocked and went through the glove box, looked in the back seat; nothing standing out so they just went onto the next one," said Pete, who asked not to reveal his surname. He said they also tried the door handle of his locked Commodore that was parked in the driveway. "It was one of those things, they didn't get anything so it just p***** me off because you know what's it's like you work hard for your money." "They weren't smashing windows or anything," he added. Pete said it appeared two young people wearing hoodies tried the door handles of at least 10 cars at 3.55am. "If they were locked, they just moved onto the next one." He said there were also two cars seen driving down the street while two people were on foot "going up and down the street." The footage was shared on Facebook's Casey Crime Page in the hope that anyone with information may be able to assist police. According to data from the Crime Statistics Agency, there were 73 incidents reported of theft from motor vehicle in Clyde North during the year ending in June. Pain at bowser could ease By Brendan Rees Petrol price cycles have frustrated motorists as they feel the squeeze on household incomes but a chief economist says the average unleaded prices were down. In the past week, the average unleaded fuel price for Melbourne was down by 4.4 cents to 125.7c a litre, according to CommSec's Craig James. "Discounting cycles may be shifting but there is still good news for motorists - at least for now," a weekly insights note from Mr James issued on 3 December stated. It added: "Cheaper prices are still possible in the next fortnight. Prices near $1.10 a litre can't be ruled out for the biggest petrol discounters,"
According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average Australian price of unleaded petrol fell by 3.8 cents to 134.1 cents a litre. However, Petrolspy.com showed Caltex South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne had unleaded fuel at 149.9c a litre on Friday 7 December, while 7-Eleven on Evans Road in Cranbourne West was 143.9c and Woolworths Caltex on Thompsons Road at 149.9c a litre on Friday 7 December. The cheapest prices were APCO DandenongHastings Road in Cranbourne at 118.9c, and United at the corner of Clarendon Street and High Street in Cranbourne at 119.9c a litre. United in Dandenong Hastings Highway in Lynbrook was 120.9c a litre.
Cranbourne resident Aaron Grant said he just "don't see the fairness" in the petrol hikes. "We don't have a choice but to pay the price," he said. Mr Grant, 24, said he paid up to $105 on average to fill his Holden SV6 for unleaded that was 1.50c a litre. "Someone like myself; when you're paying a mortgage as well as insurance costs, and petrol costs, it does not help when the petrol goes up because you're paying $20 to $30 more a week." ACCC Commissioner Mick Keogh said while the retailers' use of price cycles to maximise profits was not illegal it "really infuriates drivers as they can see no reason for them to exist." "There's a common perception that all retailers put their prices up or down at exactly the

same time, but our research shows this isn't the case," he said. RACV vehicle engineering manager Michael Case said motorists were advised to "top up" rather than filing up when prices were high. "RACV provides fuel price information for motorists to find the cheapest prices in their area or along their journey. As a general guide, regular searches for the cheapest fuel can save motorists hundreds of dollars a year," he said. He added fuel prices were influenced by underlying changes in world oil prices. The RACV website listed Melbourne's average unleaded fuel price on Friday 7 December as 142.1c a litre.

Police have released CCTV as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a hit-run collision at Lyndhurst on Saturday 1 December. Dandenong Crime Investigation Unit detectives understand two vehicles were driving north towards Dandenong along Glasscocks Road when the drivers became involved in an argument about 6pm. The driver of a Volkswagen sedan and his passenger exited their vehicle and approached the second vehicle, believed to be a black SUV. The 34-year-old driver of the Volkswagen sedan was struck by the second vehicle and taken to hospital with serious injuries. He remains in a critical condition in hospital. The black SUV left the scene and is yet to be located. Along with the CCTV of a vehicle police wish to identify, detectives have also released a facial composite image of a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries. The male driver is perceived to be of Pacific Islander appearance and was wearing a large straw hat. Investigators are appealing for any witnesses who saw the collision or any driver who may have dash cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or they can file a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic. com.au

Christmas can be a time of waste and excess. However, there are ways to reduce your green footstep over the festive season. The City of Casey's envionmental team has put together some great tips to reduce consumption and waste this December. Here’s some ideas to help you enjoy a greener Christmas this year.
Plan for left overs – expect you will have tasty treats for the next day and don’t buy extras. Use real crockery, cutlery and glassware instead of single use plastic ones. This will save on room in your bin and is a much nicer dining experience.
Christmas Shopping Bring your own bags – this not only applies to your groceries, but all shopping throughout the Christmas period. Shop at Op Shops or buy second hand from eBay and GumTree – this could include popular children’s gift including trampolines, swing sets and bikes. Consider local products and markets and ‘bake, make and create’ as an alternative to shopping. This could include planting some seeds in advance to give a living pot or baking some sweet treats. Try out the four-gift rule for children – ‘something they want, something they need, something to wear, something to read’.
Wrapping and decorating Buy experiences that don’t need wrapping and create memories! Use reusable gift bags and boxes. Tea towels and ribbon or reusable Christmas fabric can make for colourful wrapping and are a great alternative.
Cooking Plan your festive meals – buy only what you need and can consume. Buy food in season and local produce. Avoid food waste by covering food (eg. those cheese and dip platters) and put your left overs in the fridge as early as possible.
Sort your waste and recycling Be prepared to sort out your waste and get it in the right bin. Don’t forget bin night; bins will be collected as normal over the festive period including public holidays. Plastic moulding from around children’s toys can go in the recycling as can paper wrapping paper. Foil wrapping paper cannot be recycled in your blue bins. Compost your fruit and vegetable scraps. Scrunch and collect used foil into a cricket ball size before placing in your blue recycling bin (a little bit of food residue is ok).

$1.3m funding win for hall Students at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North will benefit from a new multipurpose hall thanks to a Federal Government Grant. Member for Latrobe Jason Wood announced on Monday 10 December the Australian Government would provide more than $1.3 million towards the project at Hillcrest Christian College through the Capital Grants Program. "Students and teachers thrive when their schools have modern and up-to-date facilities - that's why the Federal Government is proud of the Capital Grants Program, which has ben-
efited thousands of schools across the nation," Mr Wood said. "The Government has committed $660 million until 2021, which provides funding for non-government schools to improve capital infrastructure. "These upgrades will help advance Hillcrest Christian College and ensure our classrooms have modern facilities. "I congratulate Hillcrest Christian College for their successful grant and look forward to seeing the impact these improvements will have in our community."

'Tis the time to be jolly Students from Lynbrook Primary School have spread the Christmas cheer by presenting food hampers to local charity Bk2Basics on Wednesday 5 December. Grade Four Teacher Rebekah Bogos said with the generous support of our Lynbrook School Community, they were able to fill 50 washing baskets with food supplies to help families in need. "Our Junior School Council connected with the Bk2Basics charity who works tirelessly in the community," she said. The presentation celebrated International
Volunteer Day, with Grade Four students also enjoying a talk from the team of volunteers at Bk2Basics. "Kelly, Kaidi and John were overwhelmed by the generosity of our children and their families," Ms Bogos said. "Along with other volunteers from local groups - Hampton Park Girl Guides, Hampton Park Library, City of Casey Traffic School, Labrador Rescue, Casey Netball and Softball Victoria and Australia our students left feeling motivated to make a difference in their community."

One too many calls By Brendan Rees The problem of motorists using their mobile phone while behind the wheel "is not going away," according to police. Alarming new figures showed officers issued 1157 for drivers using their phone in the years 2016 and 2017 in Casey. Cranbourne Highway Patrol Sergeant Pat McGavigan said too often police saw drivers stopping at traffic lights where the "first thing they do is pick up their mobile." "It is a contributor to road trauma and that cost cannot be put into a price," he said. "The problem is not going away." "A good way for motorists not to donate to road trauma is to concentrate." The fine for using a mobile phone is $484 and four demerit points.
Victoria Police road policing operations Superintendent John Fitzpatrick said driver distraction was one of the five leading causes of death on the roads. "It's very concerning to still be catching people running the risk of killing or seriously injuring themselves or another person for the sake of a phone call or text that can wait till later," he said. "Taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds when driving at only 50km/h means you are travelling effectively blind for 27 metres. "It's a no-brainer, when you're behind the wheel, your eyes should be on the road. Our message is simple - switch off your phone before you switch on the engine." TAC research has found almost half of all Victorians under the age of 30 have used their
phone when driving, while the demographic also see the habit as more socially acceptable than pushing into a queue. "Looking at and using a mobile phone while driving is extremely dangerous, because it means we are taking our eyes and focus off the road," TAC spokesperson Nic McGay said. Operation Roadwise starts on Friday 1 December and continues through to 6 January, 2019. "This operation is designed to let everyone celebrate the festive season and see 2019 arrive," Sgt McGavigan said. "Victoria Police will deploy as many resources as possible targeting road safety including speed, impaired driving, occupant safety and driver distraction."

School’s fun run helps Students of Lynbrook's St Francis de Sales Primary School swapped their books for a sunrise fun run to help raise money for children with cerebral palsy. Together with members of the community, the students ran a lap of Banjo Patterson Park on Wednesday 5 December to raise more than $300 for the Cerebral Palsy Education Centre. Special guest retired soccer player Gulcan Koca of Melbourne Victory also joined in the fun. "The children did an outstanding job on the day," teacher Sandi Dinsdale said. Cerebral Palsy is condition marked by impaired muscle coordination (spastic paralysis) and/or other disabilities, typically caused by damage to the brain before or at birth. Ms Dinsdale said the equipment needed for children with cerebral palsy to live comfortably was incredibly expensive, "so St Francis De Sales children wanted to help by setting up a fun run, to raise money." Nissan and Jeep kindly sponsored the event.
Santa comes to town in a fire truck Santa traded his slade for a fire truck when he visited more than 100 children in Lyndhurst on Saturday 8 December. Firefighters from the Hampton Park fire brigade took a day out of their busy schedule to chauffer Santa to Great Beginnings childcare centre. Families flocked to Livvi's Place to greet Santa who he handed our presents to the children - which were books supplied by Great Beginnings. Power signing for Eagles By Nick Creely Big Piva has landed at Power Reserve. Piva Wright, the former Richmond rookie and Dandenong Stingray has put pen to paper at the Doveton Eagles in Southern Football League Division 2, and it's sure to keep plenty of defenders up at night throughout 2019. More recently, Wright, 25, plied his trade with Noble Park in the powerful Eastern Football League, topping the goal kicking for the Bulls with 38 majors in a terrific season in Division 1 for the power forward. Doveton Eagles president Shane McGrath said that the club was thrilled to welcome in someone with a quality character, and expects the high profile recruit to settle in well. "We're thrilled, he's a local guy who works at the local primary school, so it's been a really community focus for us - he ticks a lot of boxes, that's for sure," he said. Despite Noble Park's desperation to hold on to the power forward, McGrath said that Wright was keen to play with some mates. "It all happened really quickly - he's got some friends around the club, so that always helps when you get to play with mates," he said. The Eagles have managed to lure big names such as Nick Battle, Ryan Hendy, Darren Sheen and Russell Robertson to the club, and McGrath said it points to the culture and brand of footy that's been established at the club. The club is desperate to work its way
up to Division 1, and won't take a backwards step. But, after losing Sheen to Kooweerup after a brief stint at the club, the search was on for another power forward with the capability to kick big bags of goals. "We've worked really hard to be attractive to players wanting to come in, and that's (signing Wright) justification, i guess," he said. "As a club, we've got high ambitions - we want to improve our standards, and Piva brings it in that regard, so we're thrilled." The Eagles - who were runners-up in Div 2 this season - have also announced Scott Irvine, a wingman who has played with Kilsyth and Seville, highly rated tall forward Jye Siegersma, who also comes across from Kilsyth, as well as dynamic half-back Andrew Ray from Narre Warren, and will be gearing up for yet another assault at a premiership. "We've added some other quality players, and we're all about bringing in quality people too," he said. "Andy Ray has Southern experience and dominated Div 1 a few years ago, and Jye and Scott are great footballers who have put work and personal life before footy the last few years, and they are now more settle personally, so are looking to change their focus to footy a bit more." Gippsland Carnival launches in style Last Thursday’s launch of the third TRFM Gippsland Carnival, Australia’s biggest regional racing series, was a top-class night of entertainment with sporting royalty in attendance at Logan Park in Warragul. Former England cricket captain Sir Ian Botham captivated the crowd with stories of his cricketing career and the people he met along the way. He also spoke of his admirable charity work through Beefy’s Charity Foundation, in which he hosts fundraising events to support cancer research and treatment for youth with serious health conditions. Experienced football administrator Darren Flanigan is back at the Dandenong Stingrays in his second stint as region talent manager at the TAC Cup club. The reigning premiers have appointed the 56-year-old former AFL ruckman back to Shepley Oval, replacing Mark Wheeler, who has joined the Sandringham Dragons. Flanigan played 130 games with Geelong from 1981 to 1991, before spending a season with St Kilda in 1992, adding a further eight games to his tally. Most recently, Flanigan had been doing some fine work as AFL Victoria's female football talent manager, where he oversaw the development and pathways of talented female footballers in the state, earning him high praise in the industry, as well as work with AFL International for the China Athlete Academy, where he served as operations manager. He has also served as a specialist coach with both Collingwood and Melbourne, where he has helped Flanigan's first stint as region manager of the Stingrays began in 2001 and ended 10 years later, replaced by Wheeler, who delivered the first ever TAC Cup premiership for the region in 2018. He will now work closely with new coach Nick Cox this pre-season in what looms as a new era for the club with the departure of premiership coach Craig Black, who has joined Collingwood as a development coach, and has already begun pre-season training with his players. The Stingrays have also announced highly regarded Rye senior coach Josh Moore as an assistant coach for 2019. Stingrays' premiership assistant Josh Bourke, a highly touted footy head and coaching prospect, has also departed, taking on the senior coaching role at Sandringham Dragons, alongside Wheeler once again.

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET ROUND 8 (DAY ONE) The challenge is set for Dandenong after an epic century to Melbourne skipper Matthew Brown on Saturday has presented the Panthers with a tough chase next week. In a surprising decision, the Panthers sent the Demons in to bat at the Albert Ground in the, and after a solid start to the home side, the decision to bowl seemed the right call after a double strike had the reigning premiers in a strong position. Blake Thomson (38) and Brown absorbed plenty of pressure to put together a 43 run partnership, and from there, batting just got easier for the Dees. Despite some fine bowling by James Nanopoulos (3/68), Brown began to find his flow, taking apart the visitors’ attack with a class display of batting. With Jack Harper (49), Brad Melville (21) and Sean Sturrock (21) batting around the skipper, the Dees racked up the runs - particularly late in the day - to finish on an imposing 7/326 off 96 overs at stumps on day one. Brown walked off the ground with a 157 brilliant runs next to his name, a knock that was compiled over 267 balls, and included 16 fours and three sixes. The opening partnership of Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth will clearly be the key for the Panthers when play resumes next Saturday, with the middle order of Lincoln Edwards, Ed Newman and Cam Forsyth also needing a lift if the visitors are to pull off the tricky chase. In the seconds, meanwhile, the returning Peter Cassidy (99) fell narrowly short of a brilliant century in his return game as the Panthers racked up 9/340. Adihetty, who is on debut replacing spearhead Nathan Lambden, is a left-arm spinner with an abundance of talent, did a similar job with the bat in the seconds earlier in the season, hitting a 134-ball 65 after coming in 6/151, and is certainly a player to keep an eye on. The Swans were eventually bowled out for 171 in the 62nd over, and without Lambden taking the new pill, needed a strong start with the ball to have any chance. Impressive recruit Josh Dowling (1/14) snared dangerous opener Ramneet Dhindsa (9) early, but the home side steadied nicely to finish 2/74 at stumps, with Lachie Sperling (1/5) picking up Shorye Chopra (19) shortly before the close of play. But the Hawks will undoubtedly be favourites when play resumes on Saturday, with the Swans needing early wickets to stand a chance of picking up the points in what looms as an extremely important weekend in the context of their season. However, what does work in the Swans’ favour is the fact that the Hawks have scored the least runs in the competition, and have badly struggled to find any momentum with the bat this season, as shown by their winless record. In the seconds, however, the Swans enjoyed a more fruitful weekend of cricket, picking up a draw against the Hawks after compiling a monster day one score in the Saturday/Sunday clash. The Swans reached an incredible 5/415 off 96 overs, with Joel Mitchell starring with his first century at the club with a brutal 135, while Chris Benedek (93) scored his second ninety for the season; Ryan Eaton (60) found more runs, while opening pair Blair Clymo (43) and Kyle Van Raay (35) got them off to a strong start.

Burns’ 30.3 overs featured 18 maidens in an incredible bowling effort from the champion Shark. At stumps, the Sharks are 4/16 off 18 overs, with Kaine Smith (2/1) and Sam Frawley (2/12) doing plenty of early damage. In other games, Langwarrin (144) and Mornington (1/12) are in a close battle, Peninsula OB (6/77) should get the job done against Sorrento (89), and Baxter (4/49) is in a comfortable position against Mt Eliza (84). VICTORIAN SUB-DISTRICT - NORTH/EAST ROUND 7 (DAY ONE) In his 50’s, Endeavour Hills champion Richard Saniga has still got it. The veteran produced as incredible performance against Box Hill at Syd Pargeter on Saturday, snaring 7/44 off 26 overs. Saniga tore the Hawks’ top order apart; before late partnerships saw the visitors reach 185 in 62.3 overs. The Eagles are in a spot of bother at stumps, scrapping through to 5/31 off 23 overs at stumps. And Noble Park (106) has already lost on first-innings to Plenty Valley (5/113), with the Parkers looking to now avoid outright next week. WOMEN’S PREMIER CRICKET TWENTY20 - ROUND 2 Dandenong picked up a barnstorming win at Shepley Oval against Prahran on Sunday, with the Panthers keeping their strong start to the Twenty20 season going. The True Blues were kept to a lowly 8/58 after being sent in to bat, with Courtney Neale (3/11) absolutely starring. The Panthers wasted little time in knocking over the runs, taking the points in just over half an hour, and with eight wickets still left in the shed. Promising form for Narre Tuesday marked the completion of the first half of the midweek bowls season. Narre Warren's Division 2 results are promising, with six wins from its nine games so far. This week Narre took on the top team in Keysborough at Fountain Gate. A close game was expected and received. With the overall scores close and their rink leading well, Keith Mark, Alan Mark, Rod Lane and Jim Millar scored a 7 on the second last end to give the main scoreboard a boost. They finished with a 31-9 win. Wally Finlayson, Reg Young, Judy Naughton and Erik Luyters held on to win 1917, but Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Brent Hone and Peter Hayden could not get going and lost 10-30. A challenging double header for Cranbourne A bumper weekend of bowls with Round 9 played on Saturday and Round 10 played on Sunday was a big ask for Cranbourne's bowlers, but the weather was kind and players responded well. The top side had two away games and, despite some great form by skip Sue Hudson and her team, Cranbourne came up short on both occasions. The second side had a narrow loss on Saturday but a good comeback win the next day. The third side fared better with two big wins on both days. The fourth side had a bye the first day but came out of the blocks with a huge win on Sunday with Skip Sofio Raiti continuing his great form. The ladies team played well but could not get over the line and has now slipped down the ladder after enjoying a week at the top. Division 2 skip Sue Hudson and her team of Joe Byrne, Lynne Wood, and Fritz Helle continued their recent great form with two huge wins on both days, winning by 11 shots at Carrum and 17 shots against Mulgrave Country Club the next day. However, the remaining rinks struggled and resulted in a 13-shot loss on Saturday against Carrum and a two-shot loss to Mulgrave Country Club on Sunday.
