health care system for the entire community. According to government figures, 45 per cent of metropolitan emergency department presentations are non-urgent. Tiny Hearts has also compiled statistics from participants, illustrating the importance of teaching the critical first aid skills. After the course, 98 per cent of parents said they felt more confident to act effectively in an emergency. Almost 50 per cent reported that they had used their acquired infant and child first aid knowledge within six months of undertaking the course. Narre Warren's Shelby Cooke, who performed CPR on her choking two-year-old daughter while paramedics rushed to their home, stressed the importance of first aid training. She believes that had she not received the course through her workplace, her daughter may have suffocated. "I still owe everything to having those skills," she said. "The more people that are equipped with them, the less tragedies we're going to see with children, babies and toddlers. "It's such a frightening thing to go through - so you need to be prepared." The free sessions will be held across the region, including at Beaconhills College, in Pakenham. Topics covered will include choking, fevers, convulsions, burns, drowning, bleeding, caring for an unconscious person, bites and stings and head injuries. Parents or caregivers interested in undertaking the free training can sign up by heading to: www.tinyheartsfirstaid.com/fundedcourse.

Hearts to help

A lifesaving Pakenham-based venture, spearheaded by a paramedic and a teacher, has received a federal cash injection to provide free first aid training throughout Melbourne's south-east. Tiny Hearts - founded by sisters Rachael Waia and Nikki Jurcutz - will arm 1800 local parents and carers with the skillsets required to save their children in the event of an emergency. In a regional first, 300 parents are also set to be trained bilingually, catering for Chinese and Afghan communities. Their journey began in a garage, but Tiny Hearts now has a headquarters in Pakenham's Industrial Park - proving that business success is attainable under the most challenging circumstances. Ms Waia, a former educator and volunteer first responder, was first aid trained when she was just 15 years old. She is determined to share her vital knowledge with as many parents as possible. "I've got two kids of my own and I know what it's like when they choke and when they're really sick," she said. "Because we've got such a good report built with our parents, we get a lot of feedback where they say, hey, you literally saved our babies' lives. "I love what I do - waking up and making a difference." Tiny Hearts worked in conjunction with the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network to secure the federal grant. The organisation also hopes to reduce the number of inappropriate admissions to the emergency department and create a better

"Cardinia Shire has advocated strongly for Government funding leading into the State election for this whole package of intersections and we will be approaching the new government after the election to fund the constructions of the intersections." A Beaconhills College student has embarked on a mission to reduce the risk of a catastrophic crash at the Toomuc Valley Road and Princes Highway, Pakenham intersection. Rahmana Basit, from Year 8, has spearheaded a petition to have traffic lights installed at the thoroughfare, prompted by a spate of accidents. She has already accrued more than 300 physical signatures and intends to present them to Councillor Michael Schilling in the coming week. According to Rahmana, the heaving intersection has drawn the ire of many students at Beaconhills College. She wants to intervene before tragedy strikes. "Everyone at my school was getting really frustrated about this road because it's such a dangerous road and accidents keep happening," she said. "The other thing that motivated me was my mum. "We were driving to school and it was getting so busy and crowded and I was thinking to myself; I need to do something about this because it is so dangerous." In addition to her physical petition, Rahmana has created an online version - which has garnered 140 additional signatures. Many were quick to rally behind her cause. "This intersection is a hazard and I am always extremely worried for school traffic, especially for students trying to cross," one supporter said on the petition. "Many a time I have witnessed vehicles taking risks turning onto Princes Highway." It comes after Councillor Brett Owen raised issues with a number of non-signalised intersections adjoining the Princes Highway between Pakenham and Beaconsfield, amid revelations the O'Neil Road junction saw two serious collisions within a week. The school has rallied behind Rahmana,

NEWS

IN BRIEF

Fined for burn-off A Clyde business has felt the heat of Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) after deciding to burn unwanted industrial waste. Ferati Holdings were fined $8060 for discarding industrial waste by burning on 31 August. EPA Southern Metro Acting Manager Stephen Lansdell said Ferati organised for a third party to bring mulch to their Manks Road site, but industrial waste was also delivered among the load. "At this stage, Ferati should have done the right thing for themselves and the environment by arranging for the waste to be removed and disposed of at a site licensed to accept it," Mr Lansdell said.

"Instead, they decided to set fire to it. "Even though Ferati may not have asked for this material, as the landowner they are responsible for it. "Our Officer for the Protection of the Local Environment was notified of the fire by a member of the public and CFA were able to extinguish it." EPA issued Ferati with a Clean Up Notice and a contractor was engaged to transport the waste to landfill. "Burning industrial waste is an offence under the Environment Protection Act because when industrial waste is burnt it can release hazardous emissions into the air which are

bad for the health of the community and the environment," Mr Lansdell said. "EPA expects that all business operators correctly dispose of their waste or EPA will take action." Mr Lansdell thanked the public for reporting the fire. "Community reports are vital to EPA's ability to protect the environment from pollution and waste and we encourage people to report pollution to the 24-hour hotline 1300 EPA VIC (1300 372 842)," he said. Under the Environment Protection Act 1970 and the Infringements Act 2008, Ferati can have the fine reviewed or have the matter determined by a court.

Kevin Ridd’s outstanding service to the CFA By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren North Fire Brigade life member Kevin Ridd, 75, recently received his National Award second clasp. In 2006, Mr Ridd received the National Medal, a medal that is awarded after 15 years of service, and then further acknowledged every 10 years. The National Award was created by Royal Warrant and is awarded by the GovernorGeneral to personnel in Australia's emergency services. This award recognises prolonged exposure to hazard in the service of the community. Mr Ridd has been a member of the Narre Warren North Fire Brigade for a long time. His firefighting career began in 1973 and he was an active member for many years. Over recent years he has no longer been an active firefighter. "Kevin was a very practical fire fighter in his day, although he is no longer active, he gave up his time to do services around the station such as maintenance work," Narre Warren North Fire Brigade president Mark Dobrich said. "He was always very actively involved in the brigade." In 2009, Mr Ridd received the National Emergency Medal for his participation in the Victorian Black Saturday fires. In addition, Mr Ridd has accepted the 45 Years of CFA Service Award, he is an honouree life member of the CFA and a life member of the Narre Warren North Fire Brigade. The Narre Warren North Fire Brigade has an award named after Mr Ridd, called the Kevin Ridd Award. The award is presented to either a brigade member or a member of the general public that has contributed to the community significantly over a period of time. The Berwick Opportunity Shop was the last to receive the Kevin Ridd Award.

A 70-year-old woman was airlifted to hospital after a freak collision in Clyde on Sunday 2 December. It is believed a Ford Territory containing two occupants, both children, was parked at a Yallambee Road address when it began to roll down the driveway about 8.30pm. The vehicle then entered the roadway and struck an eastbound Mitsubishi Triton, causing it to flip onto its roof. The 70-year-old woman, the driver and single occupant of the Mitsubishi, was trapped for some time before she was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries. The two children, a four-year-old boy and a three-year-old girl, were not injured.

City of Casey Mayor Emeritus Sam Aziz has officially married his partner Ageya after walking down the aisle on Sunday 2 December. The ceremony took place at St John's Anglican Church in Toorak with the happy couple surrounded by friends and family. Reverend Dr David Powys of St John's Cranbourne officiated the wedding with hymns and choruses sung by Nina Finn. The couple met just over a year ago at a time where both "had come through traumatic times," Cr Aziz said. "We fell in love almost instantly, and we are delighted that we have been able to be united together in marriage. "Together with my two amazing boys, I am now so fortunate to marry into a family with my queen and her three beautiful princesses. So now I have five children- all precious gifts from God," he said. Cr Aziz thanked Dr Powys and the welcoming Christian and pastoral heart of the Anglican Church of Australia. "We would also like to thank the hundreds of family and friends who either attended our wedding, or contacted us personally with their best wishes."

Council to correct rates calculation

12404323-DJ46-18

City of Casey has identified a minor miscalculation of council rates for 2018/19 and is now taking the necessary steps to correct the issue and ensure compliance with the state-wide 2.25 per cent rate cap. At its meeting on Tuesday 20 November, council resolved to slightly reduce the Capital Improved Value (CIV) rate in the dollar that was adopted in the 2018/19 Budget to rectify an issue, which will result in an average $0.22 reduction of Council rates per property. When preparing the required Annual Compliance Information for the Essential Services Commission (ESC), Council identified that there had been an unintended miscalculation and the overall general rates had increased by about $27,000 more than they should have, which works out to be an average of $0.22 per property. This meant that council's final general rate increase was calculated to be 2.26 per cent, slightly above the 2.25 per cent State Government imposed rate cap. After communication with the ESC, council has adopted a slightly reduced CIV rate in the dollar for the 2018/19 financial year and will now begin to credit ratepayers their required amount, which works out to be an average $0.22 per property but will vary based

on the individual CIV valuation of each property. A credit will be applied to about 85-90 per cent of rates bills for the 2018/19 financial year for those with upcoming payments due, with those who have already paid in full to receive a credit on their 2019/20 rates notice. Council has identified two causes for the miscalculation, both related to the finalisation of the 2018 General Revaluation in late May 2018 after council's Draft 2018/19 Budget had been prepared.

Berwick Church of Christ held a special Christmas drive, called Bringing Christmas to Life on Saturday, 1 December. 188335

In the spirit of Christmas While families across Melbourne come together to celebrate, smile and enjoy each other's company this Christmas, we mustn't forget those who are struggling at this time of the year. Berwick Church of Christ held a special Christmas drive, called Bringing Christmas to Life on Saturday, 1 December. "Many people within our community dread Christmas as they are unable to provide their children with a present or a special meal on Christmas day," Berwick Church of Christ pastor Charmaine Vis said. "While this was true in 2012, when Bringing Christmas to Life was born, the challenges of life and the cost of living have not abated; therefore, we remain committed to helping these people at Christmas. "Now in its seventh year, Bringing Christmas to Life made a positive difference in the lives of 70 families." Berwick Church of Christ aim is to reach these individuals and offer them support at the beginning of December to take some of the stress out of the preparations for Christmas and create an event that

provides celebration and companionship. Bringing Christmas to Life is supported by over sixty passionate volunteers who generously donate their time, energy and expertise in the lead up to and on the day. Families attending are able to enjoy a Christmas BBQ together with the volunteers from the church. "We hope to give dignity to parents and individuals, and create special memories for the children as we share a beautiful Christmas lunch," Ms Vis said. "Parents can choose gifts for their children, and children were able to play on jumping castles, have their face painted, create balloon animals or capture the moment in the photo booth." At the end of the day each family or individual was given a hamper; a ham and a roast to take home and enjoy on Christmas day. Bringing Christmas to Life is organised by the members of the Food Pantry Team which operates throughout the year for people who are experiencing tough times.

On 4 December, a story was shared on the Berwick Star News Facebook page about Casey Council introducing new parking restrictions along Kangan Drive, Berwick in response to the community's concerns about congestion and traffic delays. Here is how some readers reacted online: Terrence Nikolai: The school is the issue... Danielle Kutchel: The issue is much bigger than the school. TAFE students and station commuters also park there due to a lack of facilities at their destination. Any solution for them?

Lynn Bradshaw: If you want to stop congestion along Kangan Drive, you need to look into traffic management within Beconhills College. Parents exiting the school near the roundabout at Soldiers Road and doing a u turn and are blocking the road. It has NOTHING to do with the people parking further down the road . Listen to the people who live locally. ALL roads leading to this roundabout are grid locked because of this. Lisa Carman: Kangan Drive is a mess. Beaconhills is most certainly the problem unfortunately and a traffic management plan should be put into place. Maybe students

need to be dismissed at staggered times? A simple pedestrian overpass should be installed for children to cross safely and also allow for a constant stream of traffic without the delays enforced by the school crossings. Some days it takes me 30 minutes to drive from the hospital to the top of Kangan Drive where the round about is. Unsure how the school has been approved to build an ELC, introducing even further traffic, without fixing the issue. Bring on the school holidays when I can drive to work in three minutes without the traffic chaos. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

Artists donate defibrillator By Jessica Anstice Berwick Artists Society kindly donated a defibrillator to the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick on Thursday, 29 November. "A lot of the time, the Old Cheese Factory premises is used by people who are elderly," Berwick Artists Society secretary Helen Anderson said.

"People are going to be trained to use it in case of an emergency." Berwick Artists Society president Tony Purcell handed the defibrillator over to City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon at the presentation. It will not only benefit the Old Cheese Factory, but by the wider community as well.

Federal Bruce MP Julian Hill and Labor candidate for La Trobe Simon Curtis announced $500,000 as a commitment to Narre Warren Bowls Club, to get their roof project over the line.

Roof pledge bowls in a wider variety of weather settings but will also enable the club to expand the use of the greens to include undercover large scale outdoor community events. This funding commitment matches the Victorian Government's recent commitment, which brings the total funding to $1 million and ensures the project can be delivered.

By Jessica Anstice A Federal opposition leader Bill Shorten had promised to invest $500,000 towards the Narre Warren Bowls Club roof upgrade project, if elected to government. The project will see a roof constructed over two of the clubs greens. The new roof will enable the club to play

CHARITY CASH FOR CRISIS CENTRE A cash injection from an annual charity drive has further propped up the 4C’s Crisis Relief Centre in its time of need. Hundreds of local lycra legends took part in The Slog, the shire’s biggest annual charity ride on 17 November. The charity ride, which began at Chairo Christian School in Pakenham, raised over $50,000 for the 4Cs. This year, riders could choose between a 30km, 80km, 100km and 160km depending on fitness abilities. The Slog has become one of the biggest fundraisers for the 4C’s Crisis Relief Centre, raising over $400,000 since the first ride. “This money has come at an opportunistic time,” 4Cs Manager Cheryl Daly said. Of the $50,000 raised, a whopping $24,316 was raised by Team Neilson Partners. “This year our company had nine riders in The Slog,” Partner and Senior Property Consultant Matt Clark said. “The money was mainly raised through jersey sponsorship and a fundraising night at Carlei Estate. “The silent auction at the fundraising night was a huge success. The local businesses this year really stepped up with over $10,000 worth of goods and services donated such as helicopter rides, generator, paintings and homewares to name a few.” “We have been a long-time supporter of the 4C’s with over $60,000 raised through The Slog over the last three years alone. “The money will go directly back into our local community helping those most in need.” The Slog is organised entirely by volunteers, with 100 per cent of entry fees and sponsorship donated to the 4Cs. ●

hen it comes to fresh, it doesn’t get any fresher than this. We take great pride in partnering with Aussie farmers to bring you fruit and veg just like you’d find on the farm – fresh, crisp and full of flavour.

Ask any of our friendly experts what’s in season. If your recipe requires something not in season, why not try frozen fruit and veg. Snap frozen to keep the goodness in, it’s also a great way to keep food waste down.

You might also notice that one of our sections has fruit and veg that looks a little bit funny. We call this range The Odd Bunch. It’s made up of fresh produce that looks different, but is just as beautiful on the inside, healthy and nutritious, and represents incredible value. Not only does it save you money, but it helps our farmers sell more and is great for the environment as there’s less wastage. There’s nothing odd about that.

Give a little season love In the true spirit of Christmas, Target and UnitingCare Australia are joining together to improve the lives of thousands of Australians struggling during this festive season. Funds raised from their annual Christmas Appeal will help the UnitingCare Network to support its community services and programs nationwide. Now in its 27th year, the appeal has helped hundreds of thousands of families across Australia. It is easy to contribute in Target stores across Victoria and Tasmania by simply purchasing an appeal bauble for $2, a white Christmas gift box for $3 or giving an unwrapped gift at a local Target store. Volunteers from the UnitingCare Network will collect donations and distribute them to people and families in need. “The Uniting team from Pakenham Uniting

Church is working alongside Target again this year. We all encourage shoppers to “give a little love” and donate as much or as little as they can,” Uniting Volunteer Glynis Ramsay said. In 2017, the appeal raised $700,000 nationwide from over 22,000 donations, helping support over 42,000 Australian families. This year, organisers hope to reach more people who will struggle this Christmas thanks to the generous support from all Australians. The Target UnitingCare Australia Christmas Appeal runs from 1 November until 24 December 2018. Target Pakenham is located at Pakenham Place Shopping Centre, 65-79 Main Street. For more information on the appeal or to donate online, visit www.unitingcarechristmasappeal. com.au.

Christmas lights warning CFA and MFB are urging Victorians to celebrate the festive season safely and avoid firefighters crashing their Christmas. Fairy lights are a festive favourite but without proper precautions, these twinkling decorations can spark a fire. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said electrical fires were among the top causes of house fires each year but could easily be avoided by establishing some simple safety measures. “Before putting up your Christmas lights, check that the lights are in good working order and have no missing bulbs or frayed cords,” CFA Chief Officer Warrington said. “Never place lights too close to tinsel and flammable decorations or your tree may go up in smoke,” he said.

GROW BUSINESS … Casey Cardinia Region

Danyal dares to dream big By Narelle Coulter If self confidence is an indicator of future success, then 16-year-old Danyal Diallo is headed for the top. On top of his year 11 studies at Chairo Christian School, Danyal this year launched his own business - Gymshopen. The online drop shipping business sells gym equipment and accessories for both men and women. When asked what is special about Gymshopen Danyal’s answer is succinct and immediate - “The story behind it“ he says. “It was created by me. I am 16 and I started this to push back on the excuses people have not to succeed. “I am this (dark) skin colour, which doesn’t help. I am a minority, which some people use as an excuse to not do stuff. I am young, that is another excuse. “And the third excuse is that I am disabled. I have a hip disability which makes me walk funny and limits my movement.“ For Danyal the things that normally hold people back - race, youth, disability- spur him on. Born in Sudan, Danyal sustained his hip injury when he was three after being pushed off a building. Every step he takes hurts. He uses that pain to remind him what he wants in life, which is certainly not to work for someone else. “To end up working for somebody that’s not how I roll. I like being in charge always.“ Even though he is only 16, Danyal didn’t want to waste time waiting until he finished university to start his own business. So despite scepticism among family and friends, Gymshopen was launched in July, using $1000 Danyal had saved form part time jobs, including one cleaning his school, as seed money. “I had the idea in July 2017. I thought I want to make something of myself. I want to communicate with people and put back excuses.“ Danyal researched how to start a business, initially thinking he would open a bricks and mortar gymnasium but decided it would take “too much work and money“. He decided he could reach far more people online. He contacted manufacturers in China sourcing products for his website and professional marketing firms for assistance. “I called so many people,“ Danyal said, laughing. “I’d say ’Hi I’m Danyal Diallo and I have this amazing story because I’m 16 this would really work if you would give me a chance I’ll

Budding entrepreneur, Danyal Diallo. 186723 provide it’.“ Most didn’t stay on the line long enough to hear much more of his pitch. Undeterred, Danyal built a website and waited for customers. After three weeks he had his first sale. A customer in Narre Warren ordered a pair of breathable sneakers. Profit - $23. “It was like “Oh, my goodness the process works’. It’s so much easier when you’ve stepped back all of a sudden and watch it happening.“ With 16 products on his website, Danyal is now aggressively focused on marketing via Instagram and Facebook. “After the marketing I’m going to get more influencers to view the site and say a few things and market that way,“ he explained. “The next step is me going out to tell the world, give them value by inspiring them, showing them it is possible. I have three things that slow me down, most people have one and they say ’no I can’t do it’.“ Danyal, his parents and seven siblings

migrated to Australia eight years ago. He left Sudan as a small boy when the family moved to Egypt and eventually Australia, joining his grandmother who was already living in Dandenong. “In my life I’ve been to eight schools, so sudden movement and reconnecting with people, these skills have been developed which is why I am able to connect with people so easily.“ To “relax“ Danyal watches motivational videos from the likes of Billy Adcock, Earl Nightingale, Eric Thompson and Gary Vee. The videos he says “makes you stop and think who you are, who you want to be and where you’re going in life". He says his mentors closer to home are his Chairo business teacher Debra Charlette and his mum, Zita, who has encouraged his Gymshopen enterprise. He used to enjoy playing soccer until a doctor told him stop because it was damaging his hip. Unhappy about being told not to run, Danyal signed up for this year’s Relay for Life push-

ing himself to complete 100 laps. Danyal also volunteers as a youth leader with Cardinia Shire in an effort to change society’s view of young people, especially those with minority backgrounds. In five years he sees himself running multiple businesses “working in different offices, helping people“. He says his passion is “something burning inside“. “I hope to firstly get more people exercising and stop making excuses. I want people to make videos and send them to me about what they did, like they stopped procrastinating and stoped leaving it for someone else.“ And what is his advice to other 16-year-olds who dare to dream to be different? “You can do it. You just need to trust in yourself. When you know who you are your next move will be so much easier. Take time off, get away from the noise and focus on you first. When you focus on you everything comes easy.“

Business with something to cheer about By Rebecca Skilton Evolve All Stars is helping athletes of all ages to cheer their hearts out. Founded by sisters Ascha Boag and Gemma and Bronte Miles, the Cranbourne West business has powered through its infancy, overcome stereotypes and burst onto the cheerleading scene in just under two years. So successful has the journey been that Evolve recently took home the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Award for the Best New Business. While 27-year-old Gemma and 23-yearold Bronte head the coaching team with more than 15 years’ coaching experience between them, 29 year-old Ascha steers the business side of the company. Prior to Evolve All Stars, the three sisters were working and studying separately, before deciding to join forces. But unlike many siblings, the three sisters had no worries entering into business together. “Our core values are all similar so in a lot

of ways it’s easier because you’re all siblings so you’ve all been brought up the same. When your core values are the same, it’s just about bouncing ideas off each other,” Gemma said. Aware that most businesses fail within the first year, the trio spent around 18 months planning their new endeavour, wanting to give themselves “the best chance“ at success. Making sure they had enough cash flow to sustain themselves for a year, they even predicted their worst case scenario in order to be fully prepared. Following thorough research, the sisters decided that the best location for their endeavour - and local children - was the expanding suburb of Cranbourne West. “We looked at growth areas and we found (that Cranbourne West) was rapidly growing and while there were a lot of families, there wasn’t as many activities because it’s such a new area,” Ascha said. “So we thought it was a good combination of having more kids being able to come and the kids not having as much to do ... and (through cheer) kids learn about resilience, they learn

about winning and losing and about not letting their team down. It’s about commitment and hard work. They learn that the more the hard work they put in, the more they’ll get out. And I think they’re really good skills to have for the future.” The sisters then selected a warehouse within a developing industrial estate that met their safety and equipment specifications, and employed the help of their engineering and finance experienced partners to build and sustain the gym. Despite their success, the girls still found that there was one ongoing challenge: the stereotypes surrounding cheerleading. “We actually found that one of the hardest things was getting over the stereotype,” Bronte said. “Because we found that a lot of people didn’t understand what (all star cheer) was. So I feel like one of our biggest challenges is getting people through the door but once they’re here they realise how huge it is and that it’s not what they thought."

STAR NEWS 35

SPORT

Storm stars eye Cup glory By Garry Howe Recently retired Melbourne Storm star Billy Slater had an ambassadorial role at last year’s Sportsbet Pakenham Cup meeting, pressing the flesh on behalf of thoroughbred owners and handing out prizes to Fashions on the Field winners. This year, he will be in the thick of the racing action. Slater is a part-owner of leading Pakenham Cup fancy Kiwia, along with his Melbourne Storm team-mate and well known business and sporting identity Gerry Ryan. Kiwia won the Ballarat Cup at his last start and was a close-up fifth in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown before that. The five-year-old gelding is in the care of Darren Weir, who has dominated the country cups in recent years. Weir is also represented in the cup by German import Ormito, looking to continue that dominance. Slater is no stranger to racehorses, having been a track rider for glamour Sydney trainer Gai Waterhouse before starting his rugby league career. His former mentor also has a leading contender in Saturday’s $300,000 feature race with Geelong Cup winner Runaway, who went on to run 19th behind Cross Counter in this year’s Melbourne Cup. Topping the Pakenham Cup weights are Goldolphin stayer Tally and the imported Dal Harraild, trained by the combination of Ciaron Maher and David Eustace. Tally, in the care of James Cummings, is a last start winner of the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown. Dal Harraild is coming off a narrow second to The Taj Mahal in the Sandown Classic that same day and was a narrow second to Red Alto in the Bendigo Cup before that. Former British galloper will be having his fourth start in Australia. Pilote D’essai is an interesting runner. Trained by the Hayes, Hayes Dabernig team, Pilote D’essai romped home in the 2016 Pakenham Cup, but has not troubled the judge since then. He returned to form with a game second to Kiwia in the Ballarat Cup at his last start, careering away to a big lead and being run down in the shadows of the winning post. The Cup Day card has attracted quality runners, offering total prizemoney of $1 million for the first time. Supporting races include the $100,000 Schweppes David Bourke Memorial Handicap and the $150,000 Racing.com VOBIS Gold Bullion.

Jockey Regan Bayliss boots Pilote D'Essai home in the 2016 Pakenham Cup - his last win.

Fashions on the Field MC Casey Bruce talks to presenter of the winners Melbourne Storm's Billy Slater at last year's Pakenham Cup meeting. This year he will be in the thick of the racing action.

Billy Slater used to ride trackwork for Gai Waterhouse before starting his rugby league career. They both have runners in the Pakenham Cup.

Conn’s lasting Pakenham racing legacy recognised By Hayley Wildes There is no doubt that Simon Conn has been involved in some of the most important moments and projects in Pakenham Racing Club (PRC) history. Because of that, it would come as no surprise to anyone that he was recently awarded PRC life membership. Conn's involvement with the PRC has helped the club grow and prosper into the world-class facility that it is today. "I was the Westpac bank manager - I looked after the racing club and they needed someone who could count," Conn said with a laugh of how his involvement began. "There were plenty of people there who knew a lot about horses and gambling, whereas my expertise was financially and businessbased. "I was bought onto the committee in 1999 by David Bourke, who was a past chairman of Victorian Racing Club." Conn was appointed as treasurer in 2000 and served as vice chairman of the club for a decade prior to his election as chairman in 2018. Over that time, Conn has helped the PRC 36 STAR NEWS

Simon Conn was recently awarded life membership of the Pakenham Racing Club. Picture: SUPPLIED achieve major milestones - highlighted by the relocation of the club. "I was involved in the relocation of the racetrack and a number of sub committees were involved there, with hundreds of hours of meetings," Conn said.

"Every time I drive out there I shake my head - I can't believe that a couple of years ago it was just open paddocks. "We're always talking about having a worldclass facility and we basically left no stone unturned to make sure that was the case. "We've spent about $100 million out there and projects like that don't come along every day, so it's been exciting from a financing viewpoint to be involved in a $100 million project." Conn was also instrumental in the planning and development of Club Officer and the expansion of the club's hospitality and gaming businesses which now underpin the club's continued racecourse development. "I've been very ably supported by CEO Michael Hodge and COO Paul Scanlon - everyone works as a team and it's a sensational committee that I'm involved in," he said. "The fact that we've achieved so much can only be done by having a really good team. We've had a few people retire off the committee - they served beautifully - and the new people have fitted in seamlessly." Conn was delighted to be recognised with life membership, but his focus remains on continuing to improve and grow the racing club.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with life membership as well as just recently being appointed chairman, but there's still a lot of work to do," he said. "With the announcement of Caulfield's training base closing, the main aim for us is to get a horse training pool and up-hill training track - they're our top priorities now. "Those will be the big attractions for trainers to relocate from Caulfield to Pakenham." With the club's biggest event of the year the Pakenham Cup - taking place on Saturday, Conn is excited for the racing, festivities and he hopes his betting fortunes turn around, although he isn't confident. "It's our major day for the year - it's very, very social and I really enjoy it, but I'm a very unsuccessful gambler," he said with a laugh. When asked who his tip for the big race is, Conn couldn't go past the Gai Waterhourse and Adrian Bott-trained horse Runaway, which took out the Geelong Cup in October. Take that tip for what it's worth! Simon Conn's life membership is recognition of his tireless work and dedication to the Pakenham Racing Club - his legacy has been cemented, but far from completed. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

T20 annihilation in WGCA By Russell Bennett What happened at the Narre Warren East Reserve last Thursday night could best be described as like a real-life game of Stick Cricket. The highly addictive video game effectively has one main aim - for batsmen to score as many runs as possible from each over of an innings, usually 20 overs, by crushing deliveries to, and over, the fence. Thursday night's record-breaking performance by Tooradin in the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 competition was exactly that. Facing a composite side made up of Aura Vale and Gembrook players on the small confines of Narre East, the Seagulls simply went ballistic - particularly marquee player Matthew Cox. He's well known as a proven run-scorer for DDCA Turf 1 side Heinz Southern Districts, Kingston Hawthorn in Victorian Premier Cricket, and current club Ashburton. But what he produced in 54 balls of utter devastation late last week simply won't be repeated for the rest of his career... or most other people's cricket-watching lifetimes for that matter. Cox, batting at three, obliterated the undermanned attack to score an unbeaten 176 including 19 fours and 14 sixes - as he guided the Gulls to a gobsmacking 3/322 from their 20 overs. That's 16.1 runs per over. Cox's own strike rate was 325.93. Tooradin favourite sons Aaron Avery (56 not out) and Cal O'Hare (53) also feasted, but in reality just had the best seats in the house for Cox's ridiculous knock. Aura Vale/Gembrook, in its reply, reached 140 - a competitive, even winning total in many local T20 matches, but one that fell well short this time around. The result largely reflected where the respective clubs are at in the WGCA at the mo-

ment - Tooradin is a long-time top-flight powerhouse, while both Aura Vale and Gembrook are struggling desperately for numbers week to week. Their combined T20 side this season is testament to that. Thursday's result brought into question the format of the Kookaburra Cup, which can pit WGCA Premier sides like Tooradin up against third-tier 'Sub District' sides like Gembrook, or even slumping B Grade outfit Aura Vale. But that's likely to remain, particularly if as expected - a seeding format comes in next year to avoid having the likes of Kooweerup and Cardinia facing each other in the opening stages as they have so often in the recent past. Some have called for the Premier grade to have its own version of the Kookaburra Cup, for which there are monetary prizes on offer. But under the current structure, any side that's entered in the competition will have to find a way past the likes of Tooradin, Kooweerup, Pakenham and Cardinia at some point if it's to advance to the latter stages, and potentially go on to play against some of the best Twenty20 sides in the state later in the season. Elsewhere, across the opening round of the Kookaburra Cup, Nar Nar Goon/Maryknoll (96) affected a stunning Pakenham Upper/Toomuc (91) collapse to win by five runs at Pakenham Upper; an unbeaten Scott Clark century led Devon Meadows (5/266) to a huge win over Emerald (6/99); Pakenham (6/150) had the answers right when they needed them most against Cardinia (8/143); Carlisle Park (109) was comprehensively beaten by Cranbourne Meadows (2/112); Merinda Park (2/85) clinched an eight-wicket win over Catani (84); and Kooweerup (9/156) rolled Clyde for 134, with regular Demons keeper-batsman Chris Bright (2/1) finishing the contest on a hat-trick.

The West Gippsland Football Netball Competition and Ellinbank District Football Netball League are set to do battle in a mouth-watering Interleague battle in 2019, with AFL Victoria announcing the fixtures for the Community Championships on Tuesday 27 November. The neighbouring competitions will do battle on 18 May for the ultimate bragging rights, in what is sure to draw a packed crowd and plenty of interest in the local region. 2019 will mark the fourth consecutive year of the WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships, with 30 community football leagues opting-in to battle it out for some of the highest quality football Victoria has to offer. The newly formed AFL Outer East - an amalgamation between AFL Yarra Ranges and South East Football Netball League - will do battle for the first time as a competition against the highly fancied Bendigo Football Netball League, with the new competition expected to be stocked full of talent. 15 matches will be held in all areas of the state in 2019, with the fixture seeing a host of community leagues taking on local rivals, and a number of league taking on new competitors. The number-one ranked Eastern Football League has withdrawn from the 2019 Championships, with metropolitan Northern Football Netball League taking on country's Geelong Football League for the number one ranking. Stephen O'Donohue, the AFL Victoria Community Football & Development manager, said that the 2019 competition will once again be one of the highlights for grassroot footballers in Victoria. "The 2019 WorkSafe AFL Victoria Community Championships promises to be another exciting event on the community football calendar," he said.
