AirAsia X is targeting Melbourne’s northeast to lure customers to Avalon Airport ahead of Geelong’s first international flights, the airline has revealed.

Avalon is almost 40km farther from Melbourne CBD than Tullamarine and a roughly 30-minute-longer drive from Melbourne’s northeast.

But the AirAsia X spokesperson said cheaper parking, fewer freeway tolls and Avalon’s state-of-the-art terminal would help lure metro customers.

Geelong’s first two flights to Kuala Lumpur next Wednesday were at 90 per cent capacity, the spokesperson said.

“Therefore (passengers have) a good opportunity to make history and snap up the last few seats.”

Ticket sales for the service had “exceeded expectation”, the spokesperson added.

AirAsia X had filled more than 285 seats, about 76 per cent, for the first flight from Kuala Lumpur, which would land about 8.20am, the spokesperson said.

But the airline had left seats for media and dignitaries, including AirAsia X executives and Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia Andrew Goledzinowski.

Avalon Airport management staged a training exercise on Tuesday, with emergency services rescuing passengers with mock injuries and fake blood from the tarmac.

The airport on Sunday will officially open its new 9000sqm international terminal, featuring 450 seats and one of Australia’s first fullbody CT scanners.

The new route took advantage of rapid growth in Wyndham and greater Geelong, according to Avalon Airport chief executive officer Justin Giddings.

The move had cost advantages for AirAsia X and would create “considerable” Great Ocean Road tourism opportunities, he told Geelong Coast Magazine earlier this year.

Wait my fault, says Beach House chief

By Luke Voogt The Beach House’s new operator has admitted he should have met with Heritage Victoria before lodging plans to renovate the iconic building.

Mulberry Group director Nathan Toleman made the admission amid revelations the heritage building would remain closed for a third consecutive summer.

“We’ve learned our lesson - next time we’ll get a pre-planning application meeting from the start,” he told the Indy yesterday.

The agency sent Mulberry Group back to the drawing board after the company submitted plans with advice from an independent heritage consultant. “(Heritage Victoria) understands the importance of bringing the building back to life and getting people in there,“ Mr Toleman said.

“They just wanted to make a few amend-

ments and adjustments.”

Mr Toleman was “not bitter or angry” and admitted his company had been “ambitious” in hoping to open a restaurant at the building this summer.

“It’s frustrating but it’s not the end of the world,” he said.

The adjustments included modifying plans to build an external pergola for undercover heating during winter, Mr Toleman said.

“We wanted to make it a square shape. They requested a more rectangular shape, which we’re quite happy to do.”

Other “minor” adjustments included painting window frames cream instead of green and changes to the company’s plans for an additional kitchen upstairs, Mr Toleman said.

The adjustments would delay construction until at least May, which would postpone reopening until the winter off-season, he said.

“We have to adjust our expectations and our staffing levels.”

Determining which parts of the building were original or modified was difficult, Mr Toleman explained.

“The building’s quite old and it’s obviously had modifications over the years which haven’t been approved,” he said.

“We’re almost having to right wrongs from previous operators.”

Earlier this month Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood criticised Heritage Victoria for delaying the reopening.

In May council allocated $500,000 for repairs and disability access at the building and in August issued a 10-year in-principle lease to Mulberry Group.

The lease required the building to be economically-viable for Mulberry Group, Cr Harwood told the Indy.

By Luke Voogt Highton 11-year-old Bella Lynch is bringing brightness to forgotten graves at Barrabool Hills Cemetery with paper flowers she crafted in school.

“I hope it helps give the cemetery, which can be a sad place, some life and colour,” she said.

“It will also help show that every person there's remembered and special, even if their loved ones can’t get to their graves.

“On each flower, there will be a short note saying, ‘A bunch of flowers from my heart’.”

Bella devised her idea during a school project requiring students to learn a new skill for use in the community.

“I chose to learn how to make paper flowers ... and put them on the graves that don’t have flowers,” she said.

“I chose this cemetery because my mum’s grandparents are buried there.”

Bella made about 60 paper flowers with school friend Sophia after learning origami from Youtube tutorials.

Bella and grandmother Pam Stribley visited Highton's cemetery on Wednesday to place the first paper flower at the gravesite of Bella's great-grandparents.

“When we came here we noticed we might need a few more than 60,” she said.

Bella's tribute to Pam's parents moved her, she said.

“Bella had a great relationship with my dad, who passed away when he was 95.

“We thought it was a wonderful idea. The flowers really look fantastic.”

Pako Festa’s rising costs have forced ratepayers to chip in another $10,000 to keep the event viable, according to Geelong’s council.

February’s event already had $72,000 from council’s Geelong Major Events and $150,000 from State Government but needed more funding to cover costs associated with “mitigating risk, insurance and staffing”, council said.

Hendo ‘listens’ after loss

By Luke Voogt Federal Liberal MP Sarah Henderson will embark on a “listening tour” across her marginal electorate following the party’s crushing defeat in the Victorian election.

The Member for Corangamite announced the “community-first” tour on Monday.

“I will be re-doubling my efforts to reach out to every local community, listen to concerns and take appropriate action wherever possible,” she said.

The tour comes as many political commentators link the election disaster to federal coali-

tion infighting and August’s leadership spill in Canberra.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, a Victorian, conceded on ABC during the vote count that “the noise from Canberra certainly didn’t help” the election result.

“While the Victorian election was fought predominantly on state issues, voters continue to send us a clear message: focus on our issues and concerns, not yourselves,” Ms Henderson said.

In Saturday’s election Liberal MP Andrew Katos lost the seat of South Barwon, which overlaps Ms Henderson’s federal seat of Cor-

angamite, to Labor’s Darren Cheeseman.

The “first-class MP” losing his seat was “a terrible blow”, Ms Henderson said.

She would announce a schedule of dates for her tour soon, she said.

“Across such a large regional electorate, I have always taken the approach that every community matters.”

She used her announcement on Monday to attack federal Labor election opponent Libby Coker and the party’s Corio MP, Richard Marles.

“In parliament today Labor’s arrogance was on full display,” she said.

“Corio MP Richard Marles could not wipe

the smirk off his face.”

But Mr Marles hit back, ridiculing Ms Henderson’s listening tour.

“What has Sarah been doing for the past five years?” he asked.

“What people in Geelong want hasn’t changed. They want better schools, better hospitals and more jobs in our region.

“People in our community have been telling Sarah that since she was first elected.

“They’re sick of the pretend care and the talk that never amounts to anything. She has failed our city and the region, and we deserve someone better.”

‘19 MCGs’ of retail needed Greater Geelong needs 19 MCGs worth of extra retail space within 18 years, City Hall says.

But growing existing shopping centres to supply the additional 465,000 square metres of space is favoured over building new retail sites, according to council’s revised retail strategy.

Councillors adopted the strategy this week, noting that the existing 120 centres were “enough for the existing population” but inadequate for projected growth rates.

“The strategy supports expanding or redeveloping existing centres rather than building new centres. It also acknowledges there may be areas needing new centres where demand is large enough, as long as there’s no impact on existing retail and it provides a net community benefit,” City Hall said.

The strategy foreshadowed changes to the “look and feel” of shopping centres in areas including Belmont, Waurn Ponds, Shannon Ave, and Separation and Pakington Sts. Central Geelong’s “identity as a premier retail destination would continue to be supported”, City Hall said.

Isaac, 9, steps out with funds for diabetes

Heavily-armed elite police have helped crack an alleged aggravated-burglary ring in Geelong.

Special Operations Group members joined Geelong Criminal Investigation Unit to arrest three men at Whittington on Sunday in relation to offences including aggravated burglaries and car thefts.

"Four other premises were subsequently searched within the Geelong and Surf Coast region. A further three males were arrested as a result of those searches,” police posted on social media this week.

“Four persons were remanded into custody overnight to appear before the Geelong Magistrates Court.”

Police also laid charges for drug trafficking and handling stolen goods as part of the operation.

Geelong’s oil refinery operator faces 11 charges after allegedly exposing two workers to hydrofluoric acid leaks last year.

WorkSafe charged Viva Energy Australia with 11 contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act following alleged incidents at its Corio refinery on 5 November and 4 December 2017.

The charges involved nine contraventions including a failure to provide safe systems of work and adequate training, WorkSafe alleged.

The company also failed to notify WorkSafe after becoming aware of a “serious incident”, and failed to provide written record within 48 hours, the authority alleged.

WorkSafe filed the charges in Geelong Magistrates’ Court this week.

The charges followed Viva recently paying more than $31,000 in fines and costs for potentially-hazardous releases of fluoride.

The company pleaded guilty in Geelong Magistrates’ Court last week to four charges of breaching its Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) licence.

The company was licensed to emit up to 140 grams per minute of fluoride, EPA’s Carolyn Francis explained.

“But the routine monitoring required under its EPA licence showed the refinery exceeded that limit four times between December 2015 and March 2016,” she said.

“On two occasions, it reached as high as 300 grams per minute, more than twice the limit under the refinery’s EPA licence.”

Fluoride can cause impacts to plants, animals and people in sufficient concentrations.

Refinery general manager Thys Heyns said Viva Energy placed "the highest priority on safety for our workers and the community”.

The company had a range of safety processes, systems and procedures, he said.

"We're always disappointed with any incident on site. Our aim with safety is always 'Goal Zero'. ”

Grovedale volunteer-run costume supplier The Dress Up Place is facing closure without community support, its co-founder Julie Hall has warned.

“It’s sad but we know what’s coming and that’s why we’re hoping someone or some organisation might be able to help us out,” Julie said.

For decades the not-for-profit group has helped schools and theatre troupes stage productions, while working closely with disabled volunteers.

From the Little Mermaid to the Little Shop of Horrors, medieval weddings to themed parties, the shop had “provided costumes for everyone,” Julie said.

St Lawrence disability services approached The Dress Up Place some time ago about retraining people to re-enter the workforce, which eventually became “a big part of our operation,” Julie said.

“We’re not funded for that any more but we currently have 14 volunteers and eight have a disability of some sort.

“We have three cancer survivors, three diabetics, two with epilepsy, a couple with OCD and a lady who’s deaf.”

But business had tightened, which could force the shop to hang up its 27,000 costumes for good, Julie explained.

“We still get schools and amateur theatre companies but the public demand has dropped off,” she said.

“There’s Book Wee, dress-up days and school concerts, so things are usually busy for the last six months of the year.

‘Blocked’ Cr stands down

Our credit union now ‘bank’ Forty-year-old community-owned Ford Cooperative Credit Society has changed its name to Geelong Bank.

General manager Peter Vecoli said the new name marked a significant milestone in the history of the company.

“Geelong has been an integral part of our business since we were formed by the employees of Ford Geelong back in 1974,” he said.

“Our staff live locally, most of our customers live locally, so when we decided to expand our brand into the community, being part of Geelong was certainly something that we wanted as part of our heritage and future.”

The company’s research showed that many customers already referred to the credit union as a “bank“ before the renaming, Mr Vecoli said.

Recent legislative changes to enhance competition meant the company could now call itself a bank, he said.

“Unlike the major banks, customer-ownedbanks like Geelong Bank are not listed on the share market. Our customers own the bank as shareholders, making them quite unique over a traditional bank.”

Geelong Bank's 4000-plus customers shared in its profits through lower loan interest rates and other benefits, Mr Vecoli said.

The bank would continue its long-term support of sports groups and charities, he said.

“Geelong is a vibrant and growing city, and as people move to our community we want them to feel proud of supporting a local like Geelong Bank”.

Surf Coast Shire bureaucrats are blocking councillors' access to information, according to a councillor who stepped down over the issue this week.

Heather Wellington made the accusations at a council meeting on Tuesday night while announcing she would apply for leave to “reconsider her role as councillor”.

“We’re elected to govern the shire,” an emotional Cr Wellington told the Indy yesterday.

“The administration won’t provide me with information the community clearly expects I should have.

“I’m simply trying to help my community understand what council is doing with issues that are worrying them.”

The administration’s refusal to provide a breakdown of costs on an extra $150,000 for roads in Winchelsea particularly infuriated Cr Wellington.

The shire would spend part of the money on a customer liaison and inspection officer instead of on repairs and maintenance, she said.

“We’ve already got a customer service function. I can’t really see why we have to employ someone to do that.”

Many ratepayers had approached Cr Wellington about unsealed roads and the shire’s surveys indicated very low satisfaction rates in her Winchelsea ward, she said.

“I don’t think the people of Winchelsea have a habit of having unreasonably high expectations.”

Cr Wellington said her role was to represent ratepayers rather than "sit around a table once a month and only discuss issues the administration presented council".

“Residents’ concerns would otherwise never make it to the chamber.

“I think the community has an entirely different expectation. They'd be shocked if they thought we weren’t there to follow up local planning issues.”

Shire chief executive officer Keith Baillie was technically able to withhold certain information, Cr Wellington said.

“He also has the power to provide it but he has chosen to restrict information about things the community clearly expect councillors to have a role in.”

Ratepayers were tired of councillors arguing over issues like oil drilling in Bass Strait or last year’s rainbow flag debate, Cr Wellington said.

“I'd strongly prefer that councillors would focus core services for the community.”

Ratepayers in the gallery on Tuesday applauded Cr Wellington as she announced her leave application.

Mr Baillie confirmed the shire was employing a person to ensure complainants were “aware of the outcome of their request” for road maintenance or repairs.

Big clean-up begins A “vital” clean-up has begun at a Lara waste dump labelled a significant fire hazard this summer, City Hall has announced.

Fire prevention works were part of the activities at the Broderick Road recycling site, where piles of waste have reached heights of 12 metres.

Earlier this year the CFA described the site’s 350,000 square metres of stockpiled waste as a “likely” fire risk.

“Any fire that cannot be extinguished in a first attack would become a complex and long duration fire that would have a severe impact on the surrounding community, including the national and state rail networks and major highways leading into Geelong,” a CFA report said.

But site owner The Australian Sawmilling Company (TASCO) last week began undertaking the clean-up works after tenant C&D Recycling went insolvent and left behind the piles, City Hall said.

The state’s planning tribunal had hit C&D with an enforcement order to clean-up the site but TASCO had taken on “the requirements” after the insolvency.

“TASCO has confirmed with the City that 24-hour security is now on site. The security personnel have basic fire training and will monitor the heat of composting stockpiles,” City Hall said.

“Equipment including fire extinguishers, an excavator and water truck with a water cannon is on site at all times.

“A fire access road has been constructed to the north of the site, which will assist the CFA to reach the site quickly in the event of a fire.

Construction of a water pipe and concrete pad for a water tank is underway to ensure the CFA has access to high pressure water once on site.”

Clean-up activities included relocation of tyres from around waste stockpiles to a collection point for removal.

Council’s planning and development director was pleased to “see action”.

“These works, part of the rehabilitation and fire prevention plans required by the City, will go a long way to reduce the risk of a fire burn-

ing out of control at the site, said Gareth Smith.

“The works are also an important step towards the clean-up of the site.

“The community can feel reassured that measures are in place to protect the site and surrounding areas from fire, and action is being taken to clean the site up.”

The move to a “bridesmaid” suburb or town next door could provide solutions “at a time when the cost of living is biting many families”, said the Real Estate Institute of Victoria (REIV).

The institute released data this week showing potential savings across regional Victoria’s for renters willing to make the shortest of relocations to the nearest suburb or town.

Figures for suburbs and towns around greater Geelong offered some of the largest savings in the REIV’s collected data.

“For example, the median weekly house rent in Lara is $390, while you can rent a home for $110 less in adjacent Corio for $280,” the REIV said.

The data also indicated significant savings within urban Geelong, such as East Geelong with a median rent of $395 compared to neighbouring Newcomb’s $330.

REIV chief Gil King said the data suggested substantial savings on rent, which would assist many families’ “bottom line”.

“The REIV’s data shows that you don’t need to compromise what you love about living in a particular area, be it proximity to the city, convenient transport options, access to amenities including shopping centres and strips, parks and health care facilities to stay within your weekly budget,” Mr Gil King said.

Shark fears prompt ‘dig’ Shark fears have forced authorities to dig up a whale carcass buried on a beach near Ocean Grove a fortnight ago.

Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) exhumed the carcass yesterday following public fears that leaking scents and oils would be an “ongoing” shark lure.

Department incident controller Barry James said the exhumation required several days of planning.

“Several options were considered, including the option to leave the carcass in-situ or to relocate it to another site,” he said “This analysis, combined with feedback from the community, identified removal as the most suitable option.”

About 20 governmental staff worked on the removal, Mr James said.

“The removal process involved exhuming the whale from the beach and transporting it to a transfer area near the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club’s beach access ramp.

“The remains were then transferred to the Drysdale landfill facility and placed in a designated burial area.

“Additional sand was removed from the area to clear any remnants, and the beach reinstated.”

Mr James said the “operation” took around 10 hours to complete.

“The safety of our staff and the community has been paramount during planning considerations and throughout the operation.

“Factors that required careful consideration included odour impacts, the operation of heavy

We also met with several businesses and community members in the lead-up to and during the operation to address queries and concerns.

“Today’s operation saw a rolling exclusion zone enforced to ensure the process was conducted safely for all involved, which allowed the beach to remain open.

“We appreciate the community’s response to these measures and thank them for their cooperation and understanding throughout the operation.”

Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club last week contacted Bellarine MP Lisa Neville over concerns about the burial being an “ongoing shark attraction”, according to its Facebook page.

Call to ‘stamp out micros’ A Geelong politics expert has called for an overhaul of voting for Victoria’s Upper House after “micro-parties” won seats at Saturday’s election.

Torquay animal activist Andy Meddick and Geelong policeman Stuart Grimley are among micro-party candidates headed for the Legislative Council despite each so garnering less than 4.5 per cent of the vote.

Mr Meddick and Mr Grimley look set to become the first Victorian MPs of their respective Animal Justice and Derryn Hinch’s Justice parties as counting continues this week.

As two of Western Victoria’s five Upper House MPs, each would earn a minimum $171,239 a year including expenses to review proposed legislation from the Lower House and possibly propose their own.

Mr Meddick and Mr Grimley could join eight other micro-party candidates in parliament thanks to a system of preference dealing for overcoming low primary votes.

Deakin University politics senior lecturer Dr Geoffrey Robinson said their group-voting tickets “undercut the will of the people’.

A similar preferences tactic helped “littleknown candidates” with low primary votes win federal senate seats in 2013, “sparking widespread concern across the country”, Dr Robinson said.

“And so now micro-parties using that groupticket approach look set to have a strong presence in Victoria’s new Upper House in the wake of the weekend election,” Dr Robinson said.

“What we have now in Victoria undercuts the ability of the electoral system to represent people’s aspirations and interests.

“Victoria’s system doesn’t represent public opinion and I think it elects people in microparties who are subject to manipulation. They know their political future depends on keeping on-side with major parties to keep their preferences and that can change their behaviour.”

Dr Robinson said the rise of micro-parties in the Victorian Parliament underlined the need for reform.

“It will be interesting to see what happens,” he said.

“I imagine there will be pressure for reform, but on the other hand Labor might think they’ve done all right from the system this

election.”

Dr Robinson suggested that Victoria could adopt federal reforms after 2013 that “stamped out” the pooling of preferences.

Replacing the Victorian system of eight electoral regions with a state-wide ballot for Upper House candidates was another option “worth considering”, he said.

Lara MP John Eren has resigned his tourism, major events, sport and veterans ministry after retaining his seat in Saturdya's state election.

Mr Eren would step down to focus on his family, health and representing Lara, he said.

He thanked his constituents for re-electing him, saying he would “continue to work hard to deliver outcomes for my electorate”.

Mr Eren was clinically dead for three minutes after suffering a cardiac arrest in 2016.

In February he was involved in a much-publicised altercation with Labor factional boss Adem Somyurek, who was this week promoted to a ministry.

Mr Eren was also one of 21 MPs caught up in Labor’s ‘Red Shirts’ rort. In March Victorian Ombudsman Deborah Glass found the party paid $338,000 in taxpayer funds to electorate officers for campaigning at the 2014 election.

His statement this week listed lifting the profile of women in sport, creating Visit Victoria, and Centenary of Anzac commemorations among his ministerial achievements.

He thanked his ministerial staf, and spoke of growing up in commission flats after moving from Turkey with his parents as a child before working on Ford’s production line.

Mr Eren increased his margin to almost 20 per cent on Saturday as Labor either held or won all the region's lower house seats.

Geelong Labor MP Christine Couzens beat independent and former mayor Darryn Lyons, Liberal MP Andrew Katos lost South Barwon to Labor's Darren Cheeseman, and Labor's Lisa Neville defeated Liberal Brian McKiterick.

said the company’s director and commercial manager, Steve Lyons.

Hamlan Homes’ Cory Baur was “impressed” after hosting RISE participants on a site tour.

“They were enthusiastic and engaged, discussing the building process and gaining a better understanding of the trades they are considering as their future career.”

The program could eventually expand from construction to other industries, said City Hall’s Tim Hall.

“The construction industry is the current focus but the RISE program is an adaptable model that will be used in the future to bring together stakeholders in other industries experiencing labour shortages” he said.

With the Andrews Government’s combined rorting of taxpayer funds, amounting to around $1 million dollars on top of another $1.5 million wasted to hide it, 21 Labor MPs refused to be interviewed by police. Is the Daniel Andrews dictatorship also above the law?

Considering the waste of billions of dollars in the last term, including the $1.2 billion failure to build a road, is there any wonder we never have enough money for schools, hospitals and the likes? What about the government’s inability to accept there is youth gang crime in Victoria?

The hypocritical Andrews Government hounded Liberal MP Geoff Shaw out of parliament over a $6000 rort for use of a parliamentary car. It’s like the taxpayer-funded ABC, which hounded Bronwyn Bishop out of parliament for a $5000 helicopter ride yet remains silent on the Andrews Government.

That’s quite a quota Why is Premier Daniel Andrews hypocritical when it comes to gender?

Why does he thinks it’s a good think to discriminate against men because of their gender?

In announcing that half of his newly appointed cabinet will be women, Labor abandoned genuine equality of opportunity.

If equality is the Premier’s aim, then the people elevated to cabinet should be in proportion to their numbers elected to parliament. For example, if women make up 45 per cent of elected representatives then 45 per cent of cabinet should be women. This would only be fair. But if I was one of the 55 per cent of men elected to parliament I wouldn’t be very happy about being passed over simply because of my gender.

Quotas for females are in no sense equality of opportunity. They are in fact a denial of it.

Equality of opportunity does not and should not mean equal outcomes. For every man passed over in favour of a woman another woman is disadvantaged, namely the wife of the man passed over. Any form of discrimination in this day and age is unacceptable. However, I don’t think that Labor men have the ticker to take on the Premier over his blatant discrimination against them.

Due to the complete domination of Labor by feminist-inspired quotas, men’s future in Labor looks bleak indeed.

Corruption far from ‘fringe’ Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s claim that a federal anti-corruption body is just a “fringe issue” shows he isn’t listening to Australians.

All Australians have an interest in a strong national integrity watchdog but people in regional Australia have an added interest. We rely on a strong national government to provide postal, communications, infrastructure meteorological and agricultural services yet we usually live hundreds if not thousands of kilometres from capital cities where decisions about these services are made.

There is a strong sense we are out of the decision-making loop, which is why we want a strong oversight body that can root out and guard against corruption.

The government started the final fortnight of the year in Canberra opposed to a National Integrity Commission, then the government voted for it in the Parliament. Then Mr Morrison said the government was only “considering” it and then he called it a “fringe issue”.

Something of this magnitude is so much more than a fringe issue to Australians living in regional areas. It’s vitally important and locals have a vested interest in it. More than $1 bil-

Catch up to Asian power In response to Peter Rees (Letters, 23 November), Australia does need to catch up to the world, including China, on the installation of renewable energy. It is true China is building new coal power stations as it is replacing older, inefficient ones. But China is simultaneously installing vast amounts of clean energy.

Mr Rees argued that coal was cheaper but that is debatable when considering the costs to Chinese society, and ours, in terms of the health and environmental implications of using coal.

Beijing hardly has a smog-free day and the health costs of burning coal are enormous.

India is beginning to reverse its dependence on coal in favour of renewables because of the costs. India does not want to be hogtied to importing coal and is blessed with its own renewable resources.

In regard to the diesel rebate, I do not advocate farmers losing theirs. Only wealthy fossilfuel companies should lose the rebate.

In some ways this is a pointless discussion. Alternative energy is growing exponentially. I am optimistic that Australia can ultimately become a wealthy exporter of power to our immediate north. Mr Rees asked on what planet I lived. I live on the only planet we have; a still magnificent planet but one that is groaning under the weight of the damage we are doing to it.

Good old facts on climate I congratulate Leigh Adamson (Letters, 16 November) and Don Bartlett (Letters, 9 November) for standing up to Alan Barron and Tim Saclier’s apparently Jurassic understanding of science.

Does Mr Saclier really believe that the science of carbon dioxide and its heat-trapping abilities hasn’t advanced in 120 years?

Following are a few facts he seems to ignore.

First, renewable energy surpassed fossil fuel as the main source of new electricity generation globally in 2018, and modern societies are leading the implementation. Second, the previous three years were been the hottest years on record by a long way, and well-above any natural variation in the climate cycle. Third, a recent European Academies’ Science Advisory Council report showed that extreme weather events had become more frequent over the past 36 years.

But, hey, why would Mr Saclier and Mr Barron want the truth to get in the way of a story from the good old days?

Renewables a fool’s gold I might admire Leigh Adamson’s glossy view of “a clean and affordable energy future“ if I thought he knew what he was talking about.

He recognises that electricity is now unaffordable but castigates the Federal Government for not having an energy policy “other than bringing down power prices“.

The government has a second plank in its policy for power generation: reliability.

The National Energy Guarantee had a third plank: an emissions target. But the NEG was dumped because it was seen that targeting emissions by massively subsidising renewables was making the power network both unreliable and unaffordable.

Mr Adamson fails to grasp the fact that wind and solar are incapable of powering modern society. They have to be backed up by coal or gas, and the more that taxpayer-funded renewables are forced onto the market the more the fossil fuels are forced out.

We would have cheap and reliable electricity as we once had if the renewables had to compete on equal terms with fossil fuels, which alone can do the job. So why do we have to risk the destruction of our power system? Because Mr Adamson is worried about climate change.

Can he tell us why he thinks the climate is changing and why he thinks renewables will have the slightest effect on weather. However, climate propaganda is insidious and difficult to resist, except by the reasoning mind.

As Mark Twain said: “It’s easier to fool people than to convince them they’ve been fooled“.

Stage lovers launch 2019 Gripping theatre, iconic Australian actors, international hits, hometown heroes and astonishing acrobatics combine in Geelong’s diverse 2019 theatre season.

Geelong musical theatre golden couple Simon Gleeson and Natalie O’Donnell unveiled the season in a circus-themed event in front of 400-plus last night.

Gleeson spoke to Geelong Coast Magazine earlier this year, about moving to North Geelong in 2011 so his wife could be closer to her family.

He soon found plenty to love in his new home city.

“It’s certainly a nice place to raise the kids,” he told the magazine.

“I love that I can get my kayak into the bay in four minutes. “(Central Geelong has) that great little pocket of coffee shops and wine bars.”

Gleeson recently celebrated his career in a Geelong concert, and was optimistic about the city’s theatre and showbiz talent.

“There are a lot of actors here now,” he said.

He and his wife last night revealed eight theatre productions and two musical add-ons, including one of their own, for the Deakin University Theatre Season.

Geelong Performing Arts Centre chief executive officer Joel McGuinness said 2019 had “something for everyone”.

He urged locals to “explore new ideas“ at the theatre next year.

“I believe that the energy and dynamism of live performance brings people together, as well as providing context for sharing and being part of a creative community,” he said.

“In an increasingly fast-paced and stressful world, the time to come together and experience live performance is an offer to be

Star turn for carols Melbourne Carols by Candlelight veteran Silvie Paladino comes to Geelong next week to share some festive cheer onstage.

The multi-award-winning artist will entertain audiences with her favourite Christmas carols at Geelong Performing Arts Centre next Wednesday and Thursday morning.

The Christmassy gigs precede Melbourne Carols by Candlelight, where Paladino is a yearly performer.

The musical theatre icon has acted on London’s West End and sung at the NRL Grand Final, the V8 Supercars in Phillip Island and for Roger Federer’s foundation.

Last year she spoke to the Indy about singing at the 2005 AFL Grand Final in front of her father and 91,988 people.

“The roar of the crowd after I finished the national anthem was the most exhilarating moment of my career,” she said.

“I’m really blessed to have been able to do that. It was a great moment to be Australian.”

But transporting her audience “somewhere else” through song, in any gig, was the best part of her job, Paladino said.

“I love being a part of that. For me, I feel like it’s a natural thing I do - I love that I can interpret a story through song.“ She encouraged aspiring performers to chase their dreams for the right reasons.

“Fame and fortune come and go. You have to love it with from the depth of your soul or else it becomes too hard.”

As of last year, Paladino had performed 20 times at Melbourne Carols by Candlelight, a quarter of the event’s 80-year history.

David Cameron, one of Australia’s most experienced musical directors, will accompany Silvie at her festive concert in Geelong.

Shows variety set for ‘Shed’ Cross-dressing cabaret and old-school rock ‘n’ roll will hail in Bellarine Peninsula’s 2019 theatre season at the Potato Shed next Wednesday.

Cabaret singer James Welsby, along with alter-ego Valerie Hex, and musical gents Dave Cosma and Damon Smith will rock locals during the unveiling.

Potato Shed promoter Desiree Jacobson hinted at a few extra special guests on the night, but was tight-lipped about who would show up.

“You’ll have to attend to find out who,” she said.

Geelong council’s art manager Kaz Paton promised next year’s season would bring great theatre, music and cabaret to Bellarine Peninsula, to intrigue and inspire.

“I am delighted that the Potato Shed continues to offer our region a strong and vibrant artistic programme, fostering a sense of wellbeing and connection to our local community, with something for everyone to embrace,” she said.

Geelong Mayor Bruce Harwood described the Potato Shed as a popular and vibrant arts venue that was significant to cultural, social and educational development.

“I encourage everybody to experience at least one of these great shows which will inspire, challenge and entertain,” he said.

Long-time Potato Shed supporter Colin Mockett and his band, The Hip Cats, will reveal the acts for the venue’s 2019 morning series.

Scoop up icy treats With four decades in the food industry, and as part of Italian family that sold ice-cream for generations, Johnny Lo Ricco knows gelato and sorbet.

He opened his new store, Johnny’s What’s the Scoop on Pakington St, which he describes as Geelong’s “Italian Mecca“, in early November, just in time for summer.

“Satisfy your sweet tooth with our delicious Everest gelato or ice cream flavours,” he says.

“Almost all our varieties are gluten-free and use only natural flavours and colours.“ Johnny grew up in Colac, where his parents

and dad’s brothers all ran fruit shops for more than 60 years.

The stores sold virtually everything, including ice cream.

“You name it, we did it - except maybe gravy,” Johnny says.

He moved to Geelong for a bakery job, but decades later returned to doing what he loves best, selling a rainbow of ice cream in 72 flavours.

His new ice creamery is “in the same vein” as his parents’ Italian grocer, with a variety of cafe items.

“I’ve sort of come back to roost,” he says.

“It’s always been a passion of mine - it’s something I’ve always wanted to do.”

Johnny stocks delicious wraps, focaccias, smoothies, yoghurt breakfast cups, cakes, slices, biscuits, milkshakes, coffee, cannoli and, soon, churros.

He loves selling quality food, but he enjoys meeting locals even more.

“Every day you get to meet a lot of people you don’t know and learn about their lives,” he says.

Sportbrake’s a triple treat

By Ewan Kennedy Jaguar’s “Grace, space and pace” is one of the most recognised automotive advertising slogans, and applies in spades to Jaguar's XF Sportbrake.

The slogan’s three words have been translated into a vehicle to see Jaguar into the third decade of the 21st Century.

Had we suggested a decade ago that Jaguar should build a large diesel-engined station wagon you would have laughed uproariously.

Yet the Jaguar XF Sportbrake First Edition 30d is a simply stunning machine.

“Grace” in this big wagon took a rather special stylist to achieve.

Ian Callum is close to becoming a legend in the automotive business. In the XF Sportbrake he has arguably produced his best effort yet.

The XF Sportbrake keeps the curves of the large Jaguar XF saloon but gradually shapes a graceful roofline to the rear without too much loss of the practicality buyers demand from a wagon.

The streamlined Jag wagon’s body has a drag coefficient of just .29, yet the load space has a useful minimum volume of 565 litres. Its load area is very long but not all that tall, a factor of the relatively sleek rear end.

“Pace” in this big Jaguar engines comes from a variety of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel units.

Interestingly, the topline First Edition 30d S has a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6. Such is the latest in high-tech engineering in diesels these days that the 3.0-litre puts out 221kW of power and a huge 700Nm of torque.

This big Jaguar has real-wheel drive and all the engine’s grunt is taken back there via an eight-speed torque convertor automatic.

A full suite of driver assistance and safety systems is provided, including one to advise

a driver they aren’t paying attention because they’re reading or writing messages. Jaguar’s Driver Condition Monitor examines a range of inputs to detect signs of drowsiness and warn drivers when they need to take a break.

“Space” in the front seats is impressive thanks to the width of the car. The seats are comfortable in a very British manner and the low centre console with the very Jaguar popup gear selector taking pride of place.

Rear occupants have good knee-room and headroom, although it's not what you would describe as spacious in the way of a limousine.

Seats for three are in the back but they’re better suited to two as the centre tunnel is on the high side.

Natural light from a full-length panoramic roof is a nice feature.

I have to admit that after 40-plus years of test driving cars I long ago reached the stage where at the end of week’s loan I hand over the keys and seldom look back.

Cats’ Blues resume after slamming pair LOCAL CRICKET Jim Timberlake Geelong Cricket Club plays a one-day game against Carlton at Princes Park tomorrow after last weekend’s rain forced cancellation of the entire day’s play last Saturday.

The Cats did however take to the field last Sunday in the Premier Cricket Vic Super Slam T20 tournament when they travelled to Greenvale to play a double-header.

In the first game, the Cats bowled first and completely outclassed their opponents to dismiss them for a measly 125.

In reply, skipper Eamonn Vines (33) led his side to an easy win.

In the second game against Greenvale, batting first the Cats could only manage a modest 7/139, Tim Ludeman top-scoring with 59.

Early on Greenvale looked like cruising to victory when it reached 2/84 in reply.

The bowlers fought back, though, Brody Crouch leading the way with 3/20 as Geelong bundled out it host for just 122.

The side is in great form and will be ken for a strong showing tomorrow.

In Geelong Cricket Association’s top division, just one game separates third-placed

South Barwon from eighth-placed Bell Post Hill in what is proving to be a very exciting season.

Two of the sides stuck right in the middle of the log jam are Geelong City and Grovedale, and they face off tomorrow at Burdoo Reserve in a crucial clash for both sides.

Both sides lost their last game and, although Grovedale could be forgiven for succumbing to a bowler friendly wicket after last week’s rain, the same couldn't be said for Geelong City, which was unable to defend 248 at home.

The Sharks are yet to settle on their best line-up, and as has been the case for many years, are too reliant on Richie Oliver to do the bulk of their scoring, while veteran Adam Marsland also needs support with the ball.

Grovedale appears the better side on paper, although the players are yet to hit their straps this campaign, with their form fluctuating wildly at times.

The side that can play a more consistent brand of cricket for longer will win this game, and Grovedale appears most likely to do just that.

Marshall simply must win against Bell Park, while Manifold Heights will need to beat St Peters otherwise it can almost be handed the wooden spoon now.

And in division three, Alexander Thomson has moved into third place with a strong win against Geelong West last game and will be primed and ready for a test against the top side, St Albans Breakwater.

The Vikings snared outright points against the Rams in favourable bowling conditions but with better weather predicted will face a much sterner examination of their form.

Early starts for snapper ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Snapper continued biting over the past week, with early mornings the most productive.

The edge of the channel out from Clifton Springs was a popular location that accounted for a number fish to 7kg.

Anyone chasing pinkies for the table should focus on the Alcoa spoil grounds and around the nearby pier. Soft plastics fished deep or pilchard baits will work, and pike, salmon and flathead can all be expected as bycatch.

Corio Bay’s inner-harbour fished well for pinkies and flathead caught. Anglers did well either fishing from boats or landbased, with Geelong’s waterfront was a hot spot for pinkies around 30cm.

Deeper water around North Shore should be a good area for targeting bigger snapper to potentially 8kg. Casting out from the rocks will put baits in around 8m of water, which is ideal for chasing bigger fish.

Offshore, anglers fishing anywhere between Cape Schanck and Anglesea caught mako sharks caught when conditions allowed.

Offshore anglers fishing the bottom in 30m to 50m boated gummy sharks and snapper from 1.5kg to 4kg, while kingfish should soon begin appearing in similar depths for anyone ith suitable gear on board.

Squid continued to fill anglers’ bags around the Bellarine Peninsula anywhere over weed beds from Clifton Springs to Queenscliff. Casting size 3 to 3.5 jigs in white or a baitfish blue colours worked well, with the Lonsdale Bight still holding the biggest squid.

A number of coastal estuaries fired with quality bream. Peri Stavropoulos and Owen Westwell had a ball casting unweighted scrub worms and light soft plastics into snags and pulling out bream to 40cm, with walking the bank to find likely targets more productive than just sitting and waiting for a bite.

Carp fishing in the Barwon River kept a number of anglers entertained anywhere between Queen’s Park and Breakwater.

Fish to 5kg were grassed, especially when using a light berley with sweet corn or bread baits squeezed onto unweighted hooks.

Lake Purrumbete’s new fishing jetty provided plenty of action last week. Anglers fishing mudeye under a float toward the end of the jetty caught brown and rainbow trout, some over 4lb.

‘On your bike’, Danger urges young Catters Patrick Dangerfield has urged Geelong’s younger players to be “impatient” as the club chases its 10th premiership.

“I’m an impatient person, and all our leaders are because they understand that the end is closer than the beginning,“ Dangerfield said of the hunt for a flag on Tuesday.

“It’s about getting on our bike and being successful again quickly.”

Geelong added eight new players at the AFL draft and rookie draft.

Jordan Clark was taken at pick 15 and the West Australian is a good user of the ball out of defence.

Clark battled glandular fever, but is seen as a line breaker who distributes the ball cleanly.

The Cats selected South Australian Ben Jarvis with their next pick at 48.

Jarvis is a 189cm forward who reads the play well and has a “terrific leap” according the list manager Stephen Wells.

Jarvis had 17 disposals, four marks and three goals against Western Australia in the NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.

Two selections later Geelong selected Jarvis’ Norwood teammate Jacob Kennerley.

Kennerley is a smooth-moving 186cm wingman who can also play across half-back and possesses endurance.

Kennerley broke the AFL Draft Combine record for the 2km time trial - running 6:04 minutes.

Another South Australian, Darcy Fort, was taken by the Cats at number 65.

Fort is a mature aged recruit from Central

Districts and is a developing ruckman.

The 25-year-old will head back to Geelong after playing for South Barwon in 2014.

Jake Tarca was taken at pick 68.

The small forward was yet another player taken from outside Victoria.

Tarca plied his trade for South Adelaide and is 175cm tall and is a noted goalkicker with smooth foot skills on both sides of his body.

The Cats used their final pick on father-son selection Oscar Brownless.

Brownless was chosen at number 74 and is a versatile utility that can push forward or back or play in the midfield.

Geelong took one rookie draft pick, Tom Atkins from its VFL squad.

The 23-year-old is an inside midfielder who has won two VFL best and fairests and captained the Cats this season.
