Dig deep for the needy By Ophelia Heng, St Peter's College Social Justice Captain, East Campus St Vinnies Cranbourne is one of the top Vinnies organisations in Australia, in regards to numbers of families and individuals who ask for help. St. Peter’s College each year supports the St Vinnie’s Christmas Appeal by collecting and donating items that the students and their families think other families would enjoy having on Christmas Day. Every year my family has participated in this appeal and, not only does it bring joy to us as a family, but brings hope and joy to those who are more disadvantaged than us. St Francis of Assisi said that “it is in giving that we receive“. St. Peter’s College has a very strong Social Justice Program from Year 7 right through to Year 12 for students and in turn our families and community. We all have the capacity to give and we are asking all families in our college community to
support the appeal by placing their gifts under the house Christmas trees. Food items such as plum puddings, Christmas cakes, sweet biscuits, soft drinks and lollies will all bring a smile to someone’s face who is less fortunate than ourselves. An unwrapped child's gift would also be greatly appreciated under our giving tree and in turn by those who may otherwise not receive a gift on Christmas morning. All food items and gifts are presented at our College Advent Mass on 6 December. In closing I ask staff, students, their families and the community at large, that when you shop over the next couple of weeks, please remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves and how we all can bring joy and hope to other's this Christmas. Donations can be brought to reception at either the St. Peter’s College West Campus in Cranbourne or the East Campus in Clyde North, where a Christmas giving tree has been set up.

Lynbrook Village will once again present its Christmas Evening Market on Thursday 29 November from 3pm until dark. With less than a month until Christmas, Australia Post is keeping Post Office doors open longer at over 170 locations, as it moves into its busiest festive period ever. Residents in Cranbourne Park can visit their local Post Office six days a week during the extended retail hours of 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday, and 9am – 2pm Saturday until December 21. Australia Post General Manager Post Office Network David McNamara said extended trading hours will give customers more choice and convenience as they send and receive their Christmas gifts in time for the big day. “We know Christmas is a really busy time of the year so we are giving our customers greater flexibility to come in and send all their presents, or pick them up, when it best suits them,”
Mr McNamara said. “With the online shopping boom continuing, we’re delivering record volumes and we want to make sure our customers have convenient access to our products and services to help them get ready for the big day. “Last year we delivered 37 million parcels in December and we’re expecting to exceed that number this year, so it’s all hands on deck at Cranbourne Park Post Office.” Earlier this month, Australia Post announced a record number of additional workers – close to 3,000 – ahead of the busy Christmas period. As the festive season quickly approaches, some families are dreading going without a hot, nutritious meal. However, the Cranbourne Food Truck, which is run by 60 volunteers, is preparing to reach those in need this Christmas. Operated by the Cranbourne Regional Uniting Church, the service operates after hours four nights per week. "The aim of The Food Truck is to provide continual access to hot meals, groceries and toiletries in a safe and welcoming environment, without judgement of race, religion, sexuality or gender," secretary Christine Marsh said. Last December, the Food Truck received a $10,000 grant from Westpac Foundation's Community Grants program which has helped cover the costs of running the truck. "The grant has meant that we have been able to continue our work into the community by providing, approximately 300 meals per month," Ms Marsh said. She said the Food Truck was most grateful

Set for victory Labor candidate Pauline Richards is headed towards a resounding win in the seat of Cranbourne following the state election on Saturday 24 November. With more than 73 per cent of votes counted, Ms Richards had polled 25,833 votes, giving her a 60.82 per cent hold of the two-party preferred votes - ahead of Liberal candidate AnnMarie Hermans who was sitting on 39.19 per cent. This comes as Labor had held the Cranbourne seat by only 2.34 per cent at the 2014 election. The seat, which is Victoria’s fastest-growing
electorate, with enrolments jumping 35 per cent since 2014, had nine candidates vying for the electorate. Schools, public transport, roads, crime, and health were shaping as the key issues to decide who took Cranbourne . In a statement, Ms Richards thanked the Cranbourne community for placing their trust in the Andrews Labor Government. “I am honoured and humbled by the strength of the local support as it appears likely that Labor will continue to represent this community,” she said. “I would particularly like to thank the
hundreds of local community members who volunteered on the campaign, spending hours and day’s side-by-side telling their stories about how Labor supports an inclusive and optimistic vision for everyone in Cranbourne. “I would like to particularly thank Jude Perera for his amazing service. He has left big shoes to fill and I will endeavour to continue his work. “Our community is strong, diverse and Cranbourne is a great place to live,” she added. “I look forward to working closely with you all over the years ahead.” Retiring Labor MP Jude Perera, who has held the Cranbourne seat since 2002, said it

Tears for Jayden By Brendan Rees The tragic death of a young Pearcedale man has rocked the community as tributes flowed for the "gentle giant" who had a "beautiful heart." Jayden Morgan, 21, was airlifted to hospital after he was struck by a car on Pearcedale Road in Cranbourne South about 11pm on Saturday 17 November - but sadly succumbed to his injuries. Jayden had just left a party and was waiting for his Uber lift when he stepped onto the roadside, where the oncoming driver didn't see him. Police say the male driver of the car stopped to assist and was assisting police with their enquiries. The sudden death of the "adored" son of Leanne Morgan and "much loved brother of Tahlia" has shocked family and friends. "A week today my world changed my heart was shattered and my family was broken," Leanne said. "I'll always love you and hold you close to my heart; you will always be my baby boy. Fly high beautiful angel, love you to moon stars and beyond." Jayden's friends have remembered the popular member of the Pearcedale Football Club as an "incredible person" who had a "heart of pure gold."
"When I was down you were there for me like nobody else, you always put your friends and family before yourself," one posted on Facebook. Another said: "You were loved by so many. This breaks my heart! Life can be so unfair." "Thank you Jayden Morgan for everything you've done for me and all the memories I'll never forget, you are such an amazing person inside and out," one friend wrote. Jayden, a keen Melbourne Demons supporter, worked at Bunnings in Hastings and had also started his plumbing apprenticeship in February. Leanne said he was a hard worker, with his boss recognising he had a "good future in the trade," who had "recently elevated him to being able to go out and work in his own truck." He completed his schooling at Pearcedale Primary School and Kooweerup Secondary College. A makeshift memorial was made at the front of Jayden's family home in his honour, which was adorned with blue and red scarves and VB cans in tribute to "the humorous and fun loving," man who "was loved by so many people." More than a thousand people united at the Stratus Chapel at Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South on Friday 23 November to pay their respects.
A man has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted his pregnant partner before fleeing in a car which was abandoned in Cranbourne West. It is alleged a female was assaulted and a 10-month-old child was taken from a Mentone address about midday on Tuesday 27 November. A pursuit was initiated across a number of south eastern suburbs before it was terminated for safety reasons. The car, a Toyota Yaris, was later found in Dean Court, Cranbourne West. A 25-year-old Wodonga man man was arrested at a service station on Hume Highway near Donnybrook about 6pm by members of the Special Operations Group. The baby was located and did not require any medical treatment. Two other males were taken into custody at the service station, a 20-year-old Skye man and a 22-year-old Langwarrin man who are currently assisting police with their enquiries. The 25-year-old has been taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and is yet to be interviewed. Two police members were injured as a result of the incident and are currently being treated for non-life threatening injuries in hospital.

Man airlifted A teenager has been airlifted to hospital after a car struck a pole in Cranbourne East during the early hours on Sunday morning 25 November. It's believed the ute struck a pole on the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, near Hunt Club Boulevard just after 12.30am. Ambulance Victoria confirmed a man in his late teens suffered head and arm injuries and airlifted to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition. Another man in his late teens was taken to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition with no obvious injuries. It is believed a number of people may have witnessed the vehicle shortly before the collision and investigators are appealing to them to contact police. Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dash-cam footage to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or file a confidential report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

‘Elvis’ is all for the environment
A Sandhurst man has been caught allegedly almost six times the legal blood alcohol limit on Friday 23 November. Police intercepted the 38-year-old male driver on the Peninsula Link in Carrum Downs about 6.40pm where he returned breath test reading of 0.296. Somerville Highway Patrol impounded the man's car. Numerous calls were made to 000 reporting an erratic driver on Peninsula Link heading north. His licence was immediately suspended and his car impounded for 30 days. He is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving offences.

Cat rescuer's home plans gone astray By Brendan Rees A woman who takes in abandoned and stray cats is now in need of a home herself. Daniela Maslen had packed all her belongings into a semi-trailer, thinking the sale of her home in Hampton Park had gone through. "We already packed up everything and five minutes before the removalists left we got the phone call from our lawyer saying that settlement was not going to happen," she said. She says the current buyers were "in the process of getting a loan together" after "they have had four months and they didn't do anything." The founder of 2nd Chance Cat Rescue, who was ready to move into a property she bought in Cranbourne with her husband, is now at a bed and breakfast in Harkaway with their 15 cats - 12 of which have been rescued. "We are just waiting," Ms Maslen explained. "We haven't got anything in writing yet so we're still in limbo." Ms Maslen was running her not-for-profit organisation from Hampton Park home, but saw a better opportunity at the new property to provide more space for the cats. But now the cats are in cages in the back of the bed breakfast which Ms Maslen says is not ideal as "they can't really do much." "We have had everything stored away ... everything is in the van and in our car, and trailer." She said she had to buy more clothes because of all her belongings being in storage. "We don't have internet access where we are staying, so I can't even use that," Ms

"To top it off my husband isn't working any more ... it makes it much, much harder. "He's actually having to take his super out to get a bridging loan ... that's not a good thing," she said. Hampton Park home was not an option as it would cost them up to $7000 by the time she moved her belongings from storage, and then eventually back into the new property. Speaking to her lawyers, she says "they're hopeful" that settlement will be "all going through" which was originally set for 14 November.
Burgess set to return By Brendan Rees Liberal candidate Neale Burgess looks set to retain his seat of Hastings after the Labor Party stormed to victory in the state election. With more than 71 per cent of votes counted, Mr Burgess held 52.07 per cent of the twoparty preferred votes - ahead of Labor candidate Simon Meyer, who was sitting on 47.93 per cent of preferred votes. Mr Burgess acknowledged Labor's huge win, saying "I congratulate the Andrews Labor Government on being given the honour of governing our great state for another four years." "Victorians spoke loudly and clearly on Saturday and as always, when our community speaks, I listen," he said. Mr Burgess said the Hastings electorate was "too close to call," with 30 per cent of the vote still to be counted and recounts to follow. "I am hopeful that our local community has seen fit to again given me the great honour of serving them. If so, I will continue to represent each and every one of them, to the very best of my ability," he said. "I would also like to congratulate each of the other candidates that contested Saturday's election, for their positive campaigns." Mr Meyer has been contacted for comment. Four candidates had thrown their hat in the ring for the seat of Hastings which covers Bittern, Blind Bight, Cannons Creek, Crib Point, French Island, Hastings, HMAS Cerberus, Langwarrin, Langwarrin South, Pearcedale, Somerville, Tooradin, Tyabb and Warneet. Also parts of Baxter, Clyde, Cranbourne South, Devon Meadows, Frankston North and Moorooduc. Schools, health, education, and roads were shaping as key issues to decide who took Hastings.

Sam a leading light By Brendan Rees When Cr Sam Aziz migrated to Australia from Egypt with his parents at the age of 10, he could not speak a word of English. Today, the Mayor Emeritus for the City of Casey has officially launched a book, detailing his personal life, career, and the remarkable opportunities Australia has provided him. The book titled 'He Leads,' also chronicles the lives of five leaders who share stories of success, celebration and hardship. "Putting your life on paper is a surreal experience," Cr Aziz said, who is also former director at Australian Customs and Border Protection. "It's an opportunity for reflection; it was a really great chance to put it all there." The book aims for people to learn how to overcome challenges, communicate and lead. "I congratulate my fellow authors on their remarkable stories, and I thank my dear friend Samantha Jansen for offering me this rare opportunity," Cr Aziz said. Cr Aziz, who obtained a Master's Degree in Defence and International Relations at the Australian Defence Force Academy, reveals his perspective on leadership, vision and shaping the future in the book. "Some never before published life events have been revealed in this book," he explains. This includes a "very harrowing incident" when, at the age of 25, he was responsible for coordinating a national response following a terrorist attack on Australia, while working for the Counter Terrorism Agency. "I am honoured to be one of six authors publishing my life story in this remarkable book." "I also spoke about Bunjil Place: Never in our wildest dreams did we ever imagine building the biggest precinct in local government in the history of Australia," he says. Arrest after gun drama By Brendan Rees A 22-year-old Cranbourne man has been arrested following an alleged non-fatal shooting in Cranbourne East on Wednesday 14 November. Armed Crime Squad detectives arrested the man at an address in Pumphouse Crescent, Clyde. He is currently assisting police with their enquiries. The shooting allegedly occurred at Elmslie Drive at 6am. A 26-year-old man, who suffered lower body injuries, was taken to the Alfred Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was in a stable condition. A neighbour said there was sometimes fighting between two of men at the house, who looked like tradies aged between 25 and 35. The investigation is ongoing. Investigators believe the parties are known to each other. The schools Katie Atkin said the students' commitment to the Fun Run was second to none. "Our students are so excited about the money they've helped raise for school resources, and they thoroughly enjoyed participating alongside their peers as they cheered each other on," she said. "Our Colour Run course consisted of lots of different obstacles including a hay bale mountain, crawling under an army net, jumping over tyres, being targeted by water pistols and of course navigating the colour powder stations. "The schools fundraising group also supported the event by turning up with giant inflatable tunnels that the children ran under." School Fun Run program director Brendan Hopp said the organisation took great pride in helping schools improve student wellbeing and their learning environment. "School Fun Run has been supporting schools for more than 30 years," Mr Hopp said. The Pearcedale wildlife sanctuary took out two accolades including Ecotourism and Tourist Attraction at the RACV Victorian Tourism Awards Gala Ceremony on Thursday 22 November. Home to more than 400 native animals including kangaroos, koalas, reptiles, birds and rare species, Moonlit Sanctuary gives visitors the opportunity to enjoy close encounters with native Australian wildlife in distinctive day and night experiences. The Tourism Awards is the tourism and events industry's night of nights, celebrating winners across 30 categories for their outstanding contributions to the industry. Founder and director Michael Johnson said the sanctuary was thrilled with their win.
"I think it's a fantastic recognition of all the hard work we've been putting in and the significance of Moonlit in the local community now as a tourism attraction," he said. "Particularly, we're pleased with the Tourism Attraction award because that's a very hard fought one." Mr Johnson attributes their success to the quality of the sanctuary's presentation. Cranbourne's Kelly's Motor Club Hotel has won a prestigious state award. The popular watering hole took out the Heart of the Community award during the Australian Hotels Association State Awards for Excellence on Tuesday 20 November. Kelly's was honoured at a gala dinner in front of 1130 guests and professionals of the hotel industry in Melbourne. Kelly's Motor Club Hotel, which was also a Finalist for Burger of the Year, is a fourth generation hotel dating back to the early 1900s. Hotel manager Michael Goldie said the team was surprised. "It's huge," he said, attributing the hotel's success to the quality of its 90 staff. "The majority are young local students
working to supplement their future education." He said the hotel encouraged casual dining under the motto "it's more fun to eat at Kelly's than drink in a restaurant!'" "The idea here is to enjoy yourself" Mr Goldie, an employee of 40 years with Kelly's Motor Club Hotel said "Cranbourne has changed dramatically now from what it was 30 years ago - such a big place." Kelly's also provides scholarships for students transitioning from primary to high school in the local area. "Some of them of them will get an award as an incentive to say you did really well in whatever subjects - keep going," Mr Goldie said. "And other ones will be money to assist with shoes, uniform and things like that." "It's a family pub and do intend keeping the current environment."
Alkira Secondary College has been honoured for commemorating the service and sacrifice of war veterans over the past century. The Cranbourne North School took out the Secondary School State category in the Anzac Day Schools' Awards during a presentation with special guest City of Casey Amanda Stapledon on Friday 23 November. The school's winning project involved the Intermediate VCAL students running Anzac commemorative ceremonies at Tulliallan and Hillsmeade Primary Schools on 23 April. Classroom activities were held at Tulliallan Primary School where students interviewed veterans on their leadership and conflict management skills. Two Year 8 classes also wrote letters to veterans to thank them for the sacrifices that they
made for our country. In a statement from the Depart of Veteran Affairs, it said "The judges thought the program was unique and enhanced students' understanding of the Anzac story." "A strong link between the students and the veteran and wider community was demonstrated through this entry." It's the fifth time Alkira Secondary College has been successful with the ANZAC Day Schools' Awards in recent years. Teacher Nicole Scott said the prize money would go towards the purchase of Bears for Schools for the local primary schools, and hoped to spend the rest to purchase equipment for the student radio program. VCAL student Liz said: "I was honoured to run the ceremony for the local schools and run activities for them. It was nice to give back to the school where I started."

Bill’s ‘fighting like hell’ By Brendan Rees All Bill Barry would like this summer is to enjoy a barbecue in his own backyard. But he and other residents say they've been left "fighting a dead end" to get any privacy since the "monstrosity" Thompsons Road bridge opened right on their doorstep in June following the level crossing removal. "We're not totally against the bridge but we can see everything...every time I walk in the yard people stand there looking at you," he said. Mr Barry added it's been nothing but a "game of fighting an argument" with authorities about whether a fence will be installed around his property. "VicRoads has copped out on everything on this so far; at the start they gave us notices and everything. "They don't tell you anything ... I'm sick of hitting my head against a brick wall," Mr Barry said. He says there's been a lot of "hand-passing" and "fobbing off" between VicRoads and City of Casey when he's tried to seek answers. "Seriously I don't know why we've got councillors anymore. "VicRoads won't talk to me about it because it's not got anything to do with them - it's their bloody job." According to Mr Barry, he was told by VicRoads his current fence would be raised by a metre-and-a-half "but I don't know, they haven't put it in writing, and they haven't showed us plans." Adding to his headache was the increase in loud traffic noise, and that his driveway had also began to shift due to the building works of the bridge which started last year. "It never moved before until the vibrations started when they were putting the poles in." He says a VicRoads representative had since assessed his home saying "It's just normal

This is despite VicRoads taking photos inside his home and around the perimeter of his property prior to works starting, Mr Barry said. "I'm saying 'how come it's normal driveway movement and never moved before over 15, 20 years, whatever it is?'" "We're sick of the crap that goes on," he says. "You don't get anywhere." In a statement, Major Road Projects Authority (MRPA) said: "We will reach out to the resident as we continue talking with the local community and explore options to improve privacy to nearby properties. "Our project team have been in continuous
contact with residents since the beginning of works and are aware the new bridge opening has had some impacts." MRPA acting program director Brendan Pauwels said 10.7 kilometres of duplication work was being delivered to improve traffic flow, increase capacity and improve travels times through Cranbourne and across the south-eastern suburbs. "We're now focused on completing works on the new southern road bridge by the middle of next year which will further unlock this notorious bottleneck for drivers and keep traffic moving over the rail line," he said. "We'll continue working with the local community to improve amenity and safety."

A lollipop person is in line to man a busy road at the front of St Francis de Sales Primary School by the start of Term 1 next year. It comes after a Grade 5 student Joanna from the Lynbrook school led a petition in August calling on Casey Council for a crossing supervisor to be installed on Paterson Drive. Another two students had also since written to council about improving road safety in the area. However, under the current Road Safety Road Rules, a school crossing supervisor cannot be introduced at the existing zebra crossing. According to a council report, "school crossing supervisors have no enforcement of power on zebra crossings and therefore a
crossing supervisor at this location would not achieve the result suggested by students." Councillors voted unanimously in October to remove the zebra crossing at Paterson Drive and install a supervised school crossing. In a pedestrian survey at the zebra crossing undertaken by council, data showed 452 pedestrians and 13 cyclists crossed the road during the 6am-8am time span on the 23 August. Cr Damien Rosario said the leadership shown by the students from St Francis de Sales Primary was inspiring. "Congratulations to the future leaders of tomorrow for their initiatives and they should be very proud of what they've done," he said. The grand finale will be a spectacular fireworks display. Australian Humanities Organisation, a non-profit organisation, will be hosting a seminar to educate youth and the families in a bid to eradicate family violence from the society. Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. Locals find an AFL home By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely Two former Beaconsfield juniors had their AFL dreams realised in Friday’s Rookie Draft, with Jake Aarts joining Richmond and Tom Jok becoming an Essendon player. The former Eagles had their names read out, and will begin their AFL journeys after toiling away at state-league level for several years. Aarts, 24, a small forward who begin his footballing career at Holm Park before this year being listed at Eastern Football League powerhouse Noble Park, has been a constant presence in the front half for Richmond’s VFL program, and was taken by the AFL team on Friday with a view as being a ready-made player. In an interview with Star News back in August this year, Aarts spoke about what he brings to the table as a small forward “The way I play my footy, it’s not really changed since my junior days,” he said. “I love bringing energy and tackling, and you’ve got to defend as well, it’s not all offense, and being a small forward at Richmond, they need that in our team defence - it helps the midfield and backline with our forward pressure, so that’s what we work on.” Tom Jok, 21, also had his dream realised, and joined his boyhood club Essendon, with the Sudanese-born utility finally getting a chance after being overlooked in previous drafts. Hamill was a standout for Dandenong in their premiership-winning season and his drive off halfback started many attacking forays forward. He was selected by the Adelaide Crows with pick 30 and heads there with plenty of promise. His ability to run and carry and make the right decision with ball in hand should see him have an impact on the AFL in the years to come. Bailey Williams has long been seen as one of the premier big men in this draft class and he is headed to the reigning premiers; the West Coast Eagles. The Eagles snapped up Williams with pick 35 - which could prove to be a bar-
gain due to Williams’ incredible agility and ability to take pack marks. Williams’ stock did fall slightly throughout the season, but there’s no doubting his upside. With the Rays going to all corners of the country, Zac Foot continued that trend when he was selected by the Sydney Swans with pick 51. Foot, who was a constant driving force for the Rays through the middle of the ground, heads to Sydney with the potential to a great late selection for the Swans. White is moving forward with Buckley By Nick Creely Buckley Ridges captain-coach David White harbours no regrets about his eight years as a first class cricketer. The 27-year-old South African compiled a fine career, made centuries both in his native country and abroad, and gave everything in his pursuit of making it at the very highest level. But, in February of this year, White hung up the whites after almost decade of toiling for Eastern Province/Warriors in the South African franchise system, in a decision he describes as a "transition" from the intense nature of life as a professional career into the life of business and studying. "For me personally, it (his career) was very up and down, there was a lot of frustrating times, and I look back at it grateful, but very bittersweet," he said. "There were times where I showed the ability to perform well at franchise level and showed I had the capability to potentially play international cricket, but I wasn't consistent enough. 24 STAR NEWS

"I sort of got to a point where I realised that I needed another career - I've got no regrets, I gave absolutely everything I had for a long period of time." White is now moving forward in the next phase of his life, focusing on his studies, all with the aim of entering the business world, and potentially travelling and living around the globe. I started the degree at the beginning of the year, and I've got three sit down exams in February, so I'm hoping to pass those and get that under the belt," he said. His latest journey is in Australia, with White coming to the country to play some club cricket for the first time, and it happens that Buckley Ridges - arguably the most powerful club in the Dandenong District Cricket Association - have signed him on as captain-coach as he focuses on his studies. "It's my second time here, but my first time playing an extended period of cricket - I did a tour in 2014 with South Africa A, and that was in Townsville for three to four weeks, but I haven't played club cricket here before," he said. "The guys (at Buckley Ridges) have been good to me so far, no complaints - the guys did well last year, and have continued that this year, it's a good cricket team, and obviously with the rules allowing certain points we've got a few overseas players that are really experienced. "When I was in the UK, at Ashtead in Surrey, we had quite a young side, and here, I'm

The Storm is on the move The Gippsland Storm Elite Development Netball Club has just recently completed its 2019 try-outs and with some incredible numbers taking part, the club has increased to 10 teams for next year. The Storm has been pushing further into the Gippsland region with netball clinics held with Nyora and, more recently, Moe and now the whole club has moved a training session to Wonthaggi to show its true value of supporting the region that has supported the club. Another training session early in 2019 is also planned for Warragul. The current teams are working hard and showing good results playing at the Waverley Netball Centre, with the open team sitting second, the under-17 team fifth, the 15-and-under 1 squad sitting in first, under-15 2 sitting forth, the 15 3 squad sitting second, 15 4 in forth, and 13-and-under squad in first position
on the ladder. Storm also ran a 13-and-under development team for the first half of 2018, which has played in tournaments all over the state. Storm president Roger Palmer also offered congratulations to four more players who have just been picked up by Victorian Netball League (VNL) clubs for season 2019. Ash Gill and Kyra Esler are off to the Southern Saints, Lanni Pryor is off to the Hawks, and Kaylah Loulanting has been picked up by DC Blaze. It's a great achievement for these young ladies, the Storm, and the Gippsland region to have such success. With the inclusion of these four young athletes, it pushes the total number of Storm netballers to just over 20 playing in the VNL in 2019 - representing seven different VNL clubs in Melbourne.

The opening round of the West Gippsland Cricket Association's Kookaburra Cup Twenty20 tournament has delivered some startling results, not none more so than Devon Meadows' staggering annihilation of Emerald at Glover Reserve on Tuesday night. The Panthers took the game right away from the understrength Bombers from the outset with marquee player Kaushalya Weeraratne (25) and Matt Hutchinson (28) opening up with a 54-run stand. Hutchinson swung and missed at the first four balls of the game, but the innings quickly accelerated, and when Kyle Salerno and Scott Clark got together for their third-wicket stand it went to another level entirely - setting up an incredible 5/266 from their 20 overs. Their 190 was the second biggest Twenty20 partnership in the club's history, and the Panthers' 266 could well be the new WGCA benchmark in the format. Salerno, the skipper for the clash, recorded his fourth half-century in a row across all formats with his 67 from just 33 balls, but this was Clark's show. The big man was simply unbelievable in reaching his century. His first 50 came off 33 balls, but he then reached his ton in just 51 bringing it up in style with a six on to the roof of the clubrooms. He would go on to finish on an unbeaten 112, including 10 fours and seven sixes. The bowling figures of the young Bombers' attack reflected the carnage - with Hunter Wardale and Bailey Tucker finishing with 1/43 and 2/43 respectively from their four overs apiece. Predictably, Emerald was never in the hunt in its reply - ultimately recording 6/99 from their 20 overs with Trent Rolfs (54 not out) leading the way with a gallant unbeaten halfcentury of his own.

Super Slam starts brightly By Nick Creely A brutal knock by former Premier Cricket and Victorian underage star Dale Tormey and an allround masterclass by skipper Luke Wells delivered Casey-South Melbourne its first victory of the Victorian Twenty20 Super Slam on Tuesday night against Monash Tigers at Casey Fields. The Swans (4/201 off 20 overs) gave the Tigers absolutely no chance after a blistering start by Tormey and Wells set up the electric victory. Surging out to 0/60 off the first six overs, Tormey launched a series of massive hits over the ropes, racing out to 40 off just 13 deliveries, in a stunning start and reminder of his fine talent. Just days before, Tormey struck a marathon 177 for Pakenham in the West Gippsland Cricket Association, and in his three innings now back in the Premier fold have delivered 104 runs at 34.7. The Lions star eventually fell for 76, a 36-ball knock that included seven sixes and four boundaries, combining for a stunning 129 run stand with Luke Wells, who also oozed class to compile a 43-ball 53, including three maximums. Adding insult to injury, talented pair Jordan Wyatt (36 off 21 balls) and Lachie Sperling (18 off 10 balls) provided some late fireworks to lift the total into the 200s, a hard ask for a visiting team to chase down. Nuwan Kulasekera (3/17) struck in the first over, removing the dangerous Adam Amin for a duck, and the former Sri Lankan international's class shone, snaring two further early wickets to snuff out any Tigers early surge. Wells has been working extremely hard on his spin, and adds an exciting dimension to the side. It follows Sunday's kick-off of the inaugural Victorian Twenty20 Super Slam, with CaseySouth Melbourne starting their campaign with two thrilling losses. The Swans took on the Prahran True Blues in their first game of the day, and just fell short despite playing some solid cricket in patches. Swans skipper Luke Wells sent the True Blues into bat, and from the outset, the raw pace and energy of Nathan Lambden (4/20) saw the batting side quickly fall to 2/25. The True Blues worked hard to combat the
Swans, with Pranav Menon (29) launching a couple well over the ropes, but his run out, brought about by some clever work in the field by Lachie Sperling, saw them fall from 4/98 to 134 all out. The run chase started brightly, with the left handed Wells (21 off 13 balls) smacking four boundaries in a matter of balls to different parts of the ground, before his untimely departure followed by that of Jared Maxwell only two balls later saw the Swans fall to 2/26. Pakenham star Dale Tormey (23) - one of three marquee players for the Swans - launched a cracking pull shot that landed on the hill in a great counter attacking display, but was undone by Shaun Miller (1/16) just as he looked to threaten, and similar to the True Blues, the Swans lost a clump of middle order wickets, and eventually got bowled out for 123 in 18 overs.
Dandenong and the Swans then did battle for the final match of the day, and similar to the thrilling two- Despite Jordan Hammond (3/17) bowling with great energy and proving he belongs at the Premier level, the Panthers managed to claw their way to 6/127 at the end of the 20 overs, with Comrey Edgeworth's runa-ball 16 helping them along the way after an early stumble. The Swans lost danger man Dale Tormey early, with off-spinner Suraj Randiv (2/22) forcing the star to chop on, and with Jared Maxwell (35) and Luke Wells (23) looking set, the Swans raced out to 1/48 and in a strong position. Randiv and fellow spinner Akshat Buch (2/16) brought the game back to life, forcing plenty of mistakes as they tightened the screws and cut off the boundaries. As he did in the opening match, Nuwan Kulasekera (24 off 19 balls) managed to reverse the tide and find some much needed momentum, and with just an over left, the Swans needed seven runs for victory. But a brilliant final over from emerging quick Jakeb Thomas (3/27) denied the Swans a victory, finishing on 7/124 after their 20 overs. Four out of five ain’t bad The Cranbourne Bowls Club was all abuzz and in high spirits after recording some great wins in Round 7. Cranbourne become a genuine force in Division 2 with a win over Churchill/Waverley playing away, while three other Cranbourne sides recorded great wins. Meanwhile, playing at home, the Cranbourne Division 5 side had historians looking back at the club records with a massive 107shot victory over Mulgrave Country Club. Midweek Bowls had a bye last week and will resume again this week. After a setback last round, Cranbourne's Division 2 side was determined to get back in the finals chase by defeating Churchill/Waverley Golf. Not only did the side win but it picked up 16 valuable points with wins on three rinks, which made it mission accomplished for the day. The green was in perfect condition despite heavy rain during the week, with only the wind to contend with early in the game. But all players seemed to enjoy the excellent bowling surface. Skip Doug Boggie teamed well with his third, Ron 'Two dogs' Lyfield, and team mates Paul O'Day and Greg Jones to record an impressive 20-shot win, which was needed to enable Cranbourne to go on and win by 15 shots in total. Cranbourne 92 (16 points) defeated Churchill/Waverley Golf 77. Cranbourne's Division 3 side played at home and had a tough game against Burden Park but, with great awareness across the board, managed to get home by eight shots and pick up 16 valuable points. The best rink again was skipped by Chris Griffiths and his team of Gerry Dudink, John Stanley and Vic Butera, who went on to win by seven shots - which was a great effort. Cranbourne 81 (16 points) defeated Burden Park 73. Playing at home was obviously an advantage for Cranbourne's Division 5 side, but to win by a massive 107 shots was extraordinary in anyone's expectation. Although every rink scored sizeable wins,

ing to be a challenge for the Division 7 side. A lighting-fast green and inclement weather up in the hills was not ideal conditions and unfortunately this played into the home town's advantage. Skip Harry Van Soest was up for the challenge and - with support from his team of Brian Hall, Olive Stanley and David Brown - won by two shots, which was a good effort.
Cranbourne 64 (2 points) lost to Monbulk 88. Six-a-side skip Allen Skurrie and his team of Bob Pyne and Stan Williams had a great day, winning by 21 shots - which was enough for victory. Cranbourne 51 (12 points) defeated Mordialloc 32.

Saturday was another mixed day for Narre Warren's Pennant bowls teams. Division 3 and 4 both celebrated wins, while Division 5 and Division 7 both had losses. At Fountain Gate, Division 3 played Dandenong Club and had a good 25-shot win. Judy Naughton, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson led the way with a 2611 win, and they were aided by Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Iain Stevenson and Rod Lane who won 28-17. Keith Mark, Colin Groom, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar held on to win 22-21, while John Wright, Tracey Storm, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm went down on the last end 1820. Narre Warren (1) 16-94 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 2-69. Division 4 was also at Fountain Gate against Cranbourne RSL. The win was set up with Arthur Fitt, Peter Castricum, Ralph Devonshire and Norm Hosmer winning 24-11, and Paul McNamara, Jim Kempf, Stan Robinson and John Zanon winning 21-11. Alan Mark, Peter Groom, Mark Groom and Carl Lapham won 16-13, while Wilma Haringsma, Wally Finlayson, David Wilkinson and Geoff Miller just went down, 16-18. Narre Warren (2) 16-77 defeated Cranbourne RSL (2) 2-53. Division 5 had a bad day at Dandenong Club, not winning a rink. My Redeemer gave David Geall his biggest thrill in greyhound racing by winning the TAB Melbourne Cup at Sandown Park on Friday 23 November. In one of the most eagerly anticipated editions of the world’s greatest greyhound race, My Redeemer began cleanly from box 1 but was headed by favourite Black Opium to the first turn. My Redeemer held his position on the rail and after a brief bumping duel, he emerged a length clear entering the back straight. From there he was never challenged, doubling his margin off the back straight and powering to the line to register a brilliant 4½ victory in 29.38. Nineteen month old Black Opium finished a gallant second - her first defeat in eight career starts - while She’s Gifted finished an impressive third after coming from last past the post the first time. But it was all honours to the winner and his trainer David Geall who could barely contain his emotions after the victory. “It’s just the greatest feeling in the world,” Geall told Sky Racing. “As a trainer, a Melbourne Cup is what we all want. Just to see him jump so well in the biggest race in the world - I tell you what this is sensational.” Geall and owner Brendan Sinfield had a large contingent of family and friends trackside to experience the moment in what proved one of the most popular victories in the race’s 63 year history.
