FOCUS ON ‌ 2018 INTER DOMINION NIGHT WRAP
Inter Dominion is coming By Russell Bennett
The Cranbourne Harness Racing Club is getting set to host a heat of the famed Inter Dominion Picture: ROB CAREW series early next month. 175108 "We're very bullish and very confident that we've got such an outstanding racecourse at the moment - whether it be the track or the facilities - that we'll deliver a great job and a great
product for harness racing in Victoria," he said. "That was the crux of our submission - it is about getting people on-course, it is about getting people engaged with the sport, and

The Inter Dominion is looked upon by some as the Cox Plate of harness racing, and early next month the blockbuster event hits Cranbourne in a massive boost for the sport in the south east. The Inter Dominion Championship is truly one of the world's great harness racing series. It was first established in the mid-1930s and has long been considered the ultimate test of equine speed and strength in the discipline. It includes three heats and a final. This year's series starts at Tabcorp Park in Melton on 1 December before heading to Ballarat on 4 December, and Cranbourne on 8 December before returning to Tabcorp Park for the grand final on 15 December. Cranbourne Harness Racing Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge described just what it means to have the famed series hit Casey's showpiece sporting facility. "Harness Racing sought submissions from all venues across the state as to why they'd like to host a heat," he explained. "Cranbourne made a very detailed submission that we put a lot of work into. "There were a couple of simple principles for us - we think we've got the best harness track in Victoria, and outstanding facilities so we think we'll put on the best show possible. "Also - we think it's a wonderful opportunity for harness racing to continue to grow its brand in this vastly-populated south eastern area and certainly in the City of Casey." Mr Bainbridge said the event provided the opportunity to not only engage with existing harness racing enthusiasts, but also to secure the next generation of people involved with the sport.
we think we've got unrivalled facilities of any harness track in Victoria that'll provide the absolute best for customers when they come to enjoy what'll be a spectacular night of harness racing." Cranbourne's upcoming Inter Dominion heat night truly is a massive event for the area. "This is a venue that runs 118 times per year and I'd go so far as to say that this is arguably the biggest night of the year for any racing product that's here at Cranbourne," Mr Bainbridge said. "We've had, obviously, the Tricodes just recently and lots of great thoroughbred night meetings but I think this Inter Dominion meeting will be (showcasing) horses at the top of their game. "Some people call the Inter Dominion the Cox Plate of harness racing, and we'll have all those quality horses that will need to compete at the heat here to secure their sport in the final at Melbourne the following week. "From that point of view, to get the best of the best to your venue is what we all aspire to. Harness Racing Victoria has put a significant vote of confidence into Cranbourne, and Cranbourne has utmost confidence that it will deliver an outstanding product. "This is a great opportunity for our club to continue to grow the brand of harness racing in the south eastern suburbs, and we think on the back of this Inter Dominion night it'll be a terrific boost for harness racing in Victoria, but more importantly the south east. "I'd encourage everyone to come along. We're going to see Group 1, elite performers at the peak of their game here at Cranbourne. That doesn't happen too often where you can get the opportunity to bring elite sport out into the south eastern suburbs."

Premier event: Harness racing returns with a bang By Russell Bennett The Cranbourne Harness Racing Club will host the final heat of the Inter Dominion Series - the premier series in Australasian harness racing. Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said 2018 marked the first time the event had been back in Victoria for over nine years. "For the Cranbourne Harness Racing Club to be selected as one of the two non-metropolitan Melbourne venues to stage a round of heats is a great thrill for our club," Mr Bainbridge said. "To be able to secure Saturday night the 8th of December - the very final round of heats - is a perfect opportunity for us and something that we'll make sure we put our best foot forward with and do an outstanding job, not only for Harness Racing Victoria who've entrusted us with this responsibility, but for all harness enthusiasts and for Australasian harness racing. "We're very excited - there'll be lots of entertainment on course. Importantly, we'll present our course in absolutely pristine condition (and) we've got a number of packages available - dining options and food outlets - for people to enjoy. "Recently the State Government provided the harness racing club with a grant to build a wonderful new deck, which was operational on Tricodes night, and that will be in full swing for a wonderful outdoor party on Saturday, the 8th of December." Australian music legend Ross Wilson of Daddy Cool and Mondo Rock fame will perform a
concert live on course - one of the can't miss features of the night. "Admission is only $15 to enjoy a great night's harness racing at the elite level, but also couple that with a Ross Wilson concert, plenty of family entertainment, kids rides on course, and plenty of quality food and beverage outlets for what's become a great harness racing course," Mr Bainbridge said. "It really will be a fantastic night - not only of racing, but of entertainment as well here at the Cranbourne Racing Centre." The third round of the Inter Dominion Series, which returns to Victoria for the first time since 2008, will be run at Cranbourne on 8 December before grand final night hits Melton on Saturday, 15 December. Cranbourne boasts a variety of packages to suit small or large groups, adults or kids. The Tiered Dining package is available for $65 per person for members, and $75 for nonmembers. It provides the ultimate dining experience on the first floor of Cranbourne's tiered dining grandstand. Patrons can expect to experience a night at the trots like never before, with sweeping views across the racecourse from inside the fullyglassed members reserve. For details visit the racecourse at Grant Street, call 5996 1300, email cranbourne@hrv.org.au, or visit www.cranbourneharness.org

Pedestrian killed A pedestrian has died after being struck by a car in Cranbourne South on Saturday 17 November. Police have been told a man stepped out onto Pearcedale Road when he was struck by a car about 11pm. The male driver of the car stopped to assist and is assisting police with their enquiries. The pedestrian, a 21-year-old Pearcedale man was taken to hospital where he later died. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www. crimestoppersvic.com.au

Switched off A presenter for Casey Radio has been taken off air after a furious listener alleged crude comments were made about "breasts" and "testicles." "I had children in the car with me on both times," said Hank, who had tuned into a recent Wednesday morning show. "I certainly do not intend listening again, which is a shame because of other good shows." Hank, who asked Star not to reveal his surname, contacted Star News expressing his "great disappointment" when he heard the presenters discussing breasts and on another occasion, a chat about massages where one of the presenters spoke about "getting touched on the testicles." "Why I'm most upset is no response from the president of the radio, even after I brought it to
their attention," he said. "Then I messaged the City of Casey Council and yet again no response. "I actually went to the station twice last week to talk to someone about it after not hearing from the president or the council and the place was locked up." 3SER president Nia McMartin said a presenter concerned was "contacted, reprimanded and is currently off air for a period," with an on-air apology made on Wednesday, 14 November. "Casey Radio is a 100 per cent volunteer organisation and from time to time inexperienced presenters make mistakes," she said. "We acknowledge this and follow our processes to ensure all presenters are adequately aware of their responsibilities in line within our
association rules and the broadcasting legislation." Ms McMartin confirmed "To date, Casey Radio has not received any written notice of complaint either via normal postal channels, delivered to the station or via email." However, she said Casey Radio had received an anonymous letter from the City of Casey Council on Wednesday 31 October whereby a listener of the station complained about hearing "rubbing against testicles" and "breasts". Casey Radio took complaints of this nature seriously and had processes with which to deal with such issues, she added. Hank, who was reluctant to comment on the matter further, said: "It was once a great little station."

In the line of fire By Brendan Rees A security guard from Hampton Park has spoken for the first time after being stabbed in the neck during the Melbourne CBD terror incident on Friday 9 November. SECUREcorp Security Officer Shadi, 26, who asked not to publish his surname, was working at the City Village building at 225 Bourke Street when the terror attack unfolded about 4.10pm. He says "out of nowhere" he saw a car on fire, as he was standing at the steps of the building. "I thought that innocent people in the vehicle. I tried to go to assist then I realised that, I don't know what was going on. "The attacker was on the loose; he was stabbing people for no reason. "There was a loud explosion; everyone was screaming, running and then, out of nowhere got attacked," he said. Shadi, who has worked for City of Melbourne for 18 months, says he "didn't even have time to react" when he was confronted by the attacker, Hassan Khalif Shire Ali, 30. "He straight away stabbed me; tried to kill me, he hit me in the neck. "I tried to fend the attacker off, but I couldn't defend myself; there was too much blood." Shadi ran while he couldn't see out of his left eye, with Shire Ali giving chase. At this moment, Shadi was hit in the back of the head with the knife. "I just had to get out of there. If I stayed there; different story. "I'm very lucky to be alive that's all I can say," he said.
IN BRIEF Park's election windfall
A security guard injured in the Bourke Street terror incident has spoken about his ordeal.
Fundraiser for kids tops $11K Shadi was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and discharged on Sunday 11 November. "The police officer, I don't know his name but he was there with me, holding my neck throughout the journey until we got to the Royal Melbourne." He has been recovering at home with the support of family. "Mum went crazy over the phone, starting crying." Despite the ordeal, Shadi says it's made him more determine to apply as a police officer. Lord Mayor Sally Capp praised the bravery of Shadi, saying he would be nominated for a
bravery award. "Despite his own injuries he put his life on the line to help and protect others during this terrifying and tragic event," she said. The stabbing incident in the CBD left one person dead and is being treated as terror related. "Police shot the 30-year-old and he was taken to hospital in a critical condition but he has since died," a Victoria Police spokesperson said. SECUREcorp management thanked the first responders and fellow security guards who worked quickly to respond to the attack. Counter Terrorism Command in conjunction with the Homicide Squad are investigating.
Racing’s three times the fun By Brendan Rees Thousands turned out for one of the busiest race meetings staged under lights at Cranbourne Turf Club on Saturday 17 November. Renowned as the biggest nights on the racing calendar, the City of Casey’s popular Tricodes featured 24 races including thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing - the only one of its kind anywhere in Australia. The night was full to the brim with entertainment including live entertainment free rides and activities for the kids. Racegoers also had the chance to up close with jockeys and trainers while enjoying all of the racing action right from the mounting yard to the winning post at their leisure. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge said the club was delighted to “showcase what’s great about racing” with the three codes. “It was great to see so many people, lot of families enjoying a great night’s entertainment,” he said. Now in its 18th year, the event was significant, Mr Bainbridge explained - “not only for
New lighting will be installed at Banjo Paterson Park in Lynbrook to improve public safety, no matter who wins the state election. Labor announced last week they will inject $250,000 to install lighting around the park which is a centre point for the community, featuring a massive playground, barbeque, picnic tables and toilets. The Coalition has promised to provide $250,000 towards extending the current CCTV security camera network in Cranbourne and Lynbrook, including CCTV cameras and lighting at Banjo Paterson Park. It comes after the residential area of Lynbrook was the scene of 100 youths hiding in the park after terrorising commuters on a late night train in October. In another major win for families in Lynbrook, the State Government has promised to remove the dangerous Evans Road level crossing if re-elected on Saturday 24 November.
the racing industry but for the wider Casey community, the support was terrific.” “The three codes - they’re very significant not just for racing, they’re very significant for a lot of people because the amount of people they employ, and the economic impact they generate into Casey.” Turn to Sport for more.
A Cranbourne business has helped raise more than $11,000 for the Alannah & Madeline Foundation during a trivia night on Thursday 15 November. Staff from Cranbourne's Highview Accounting and Financial, along with family and friends turned out to support the event at Cranbourne Turf Club with more than 270 in attendance. Marketing Manager at Highview Brodie Crowther thanked all businesses for donating $6,500 worth of donated prizes. "It was certainly extremely humbling to see such generosity in the community when planning this fundraising event, enabling every single cent raised to go directly to the cause," she said.
Police nab unlicensed drivers Casey Highway Patrol officers caught two unlicensed drivers within an hour and impounded their vehicles in Cranbourne on Monday 19 November. Police intercepted a Hyundai sedan without headlights, travelling along the South Gippsland Highway just after 11pm whereby a 17-year-old Cranbourne East girl was allegedly driving unlicensed. Police also caught a 43-year-old Cranbourne man speeding and driving unlicensed on Narre Warren Cranbourne Road. He is expected to be charged on summons with unlicensed driving and exceed speed.

Drought aid raises $3K The community has dug deep during a trivia night held in Cranbourne East - helping raise $3,000 for drought-stricken farmers in the East Gippsland area. Nearly a hundred people gathered at Balla Balla Community Centre on Saturday 10 November to raise the money which will go towards making Christmas a little easier for the families and children of farmers struggling on the land.

Council’s big ‘Commit’ win
Your vote on roads
By Brendan Rees
By Brendan Rees You've nominated roads for our congestion poll, you've voted and results are clear - Clyde Road is the worst congestion road in the City of Casey by a long mile - and also takes the title as the worst congestion road in the South East. But it's by no means the only congestion road in Casey, with Soldiers Road, Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Thompsons Road receiving strong nominations, with Kangan Drive, Hall Road and Evans Road receiving dishonourable mentions. The poll result is the latest weapon in our campaign to highlight the state of congested South East roads in the lead-up to the State Election on 24 November. Over the past few months we've asked you to share the frustrations of your daily commute, and to participate in the poll. It comes as the Liberals announced on Wednesday 14 November a $1.3 million commitment - if elected at the state election - to install traffic lights on the Hall Road and Evans Road intersection and integrated with the CranbourneFrankston Road signals to minimise queuing. The upgrade will be conducted in conjunction with VicRoads and will be subject to final design and implementation. Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans said removing these suburban congestion hotspots will make the roads safer and keep traffic flowing.
Shadow Minister for Roads and Infrastructure David Hodgett, right, with Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans at the Hall Road and Evans Road intersection. Picture: CONTRIBUTED "Motorists are sick of being stuck in traffic, and want action taken to cut congestion and improve traffic flow and safety on main roads such as Hall Road and Evans Road," Ms Hermans said. "With ever increasing congestion across Cranbourne, we need a government that's focused on getting the basics right, and that includes improving our local roads. "Only the Liberal Nationals will get back in control of population growth and road infrastructure to get people out of traffic and at home with their families," she said. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said Labor was delivering when it came to upgrading arterial roads. "On top of the Labors multimillion dollar upgrade of over 10km stretch of Thompsons Road between Dandenong-Frankston Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road and removing the level crossing near Merinda Park Station by
constructing two bridges over the Cranbourne rail line, with three lanes in each direction and shared use walking and cycling paths - Labor is delivering the following much needed upgrades," he said. Labor has also pledged $169 million upgrade in which will see the duplication of 5.2 kilometres of road on Hall Road from McCormicks Road to Cranbourne-Frankston Road "Construction will include new traffic lights at the intersections of McCormicks Road, Taylors Road, Western Port Highway and Evans Road, with an upgrade of the intersection at Cranbourne-Frankston Road," Mr Perera said. "The upgrade will include $54.2 million to remove two roundabouts at Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road on the Western Port Highway, replacing them with traffic lights." Write to us or let us know on Facebook and Twitter if you're satisfied with the responses you read.
Casey Council has ticked off a massive $3.5 billion in its rail and road project wish list - in one of the most successful local government advocacy campaigns in Victorian history. In the lead up to the state election, council launched its 'Commit to Casey' campaign calling on the State Government and the Opposition to fix Casey's roads and limited public transport options. City of Casey Mayor Amanda Stapledon said more than $2 billion worth of infrastructure commitments had been made since the campaign launched in January. This includes $1 billion earmarked for railway and intersection upgrades. "It shows what local councils' can do when they harness the power of their communities and send a strong message to Spring Street and Canberra," she said. One of the biggest ticket items was the Liberals promise to provide $487 million in extending the Cranbourne line to Clyde. The State Government also pledged to deliver a $750 million upgrade of the Cranbourne line and planning for a new rail link to Clyde. The Victorian Greens unveiled their plan to extend the Cranbourne rail line to Clyde as well as duplicating the Cranbourne line, if they win the state election Some of Casey's worst road choke-points will also be fixed with Labor committed to delivering extra lanes in each direction on the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, between Thompsons Road and South Gippsland Highway. Cr Stapledon said all councillors could take pride in this achievement but the real credit went to the community who got behind 'Commit to Casey' and sent a "real wake up call" to both sides of politics to fix the roads and extend Cranbourne rail.

Mark Mathews: Wait.... Casey has a radio station? Paul Williams: Lets close down Nova, Kiss and the Fox then as they're the same. And since when did Casey have a radio station. Good advertising. RAY’S SAY
in this post, please understand that as a local radio station, for the community, we have certain responsibilities. Not only as far as legislation is concerned, but also to our vast listeners across a significant area in the South East. And I agree, we do have some other major issues happening in our region that warrant reporting (and it does get the coverage it deserves - that shooting was 12 doors down from my place last week). And I also agree we need to promote/advertise the station far better than what we do. I have a significant advertising/marketing/ branding background and have previously made several recommendations regarding our poor exposure and how we can better engage the community. However the point remains - there was a concern lodged by a member of the community and it needed to be dealt with. And hopefully it has!

Jake Tilton is a Greens candidate for Cranbourne.
Greens aim for 'unity' Jake Tilton, who is running as a Greens candidate for the Cranbourne electorate, says "It's time to build a sense of unity within our wonderful community." A candidate in the 2016 election for the Holt federal division, Mr Tilton says he's proud to be continuing the push for a better Cranbourne. He has vowed to improve public transport in the region which he says is "dismal at best," with trains and buses not operating to a "high enough standard." Public housing, he says, is being sold off much quicker than it is built. "Privatisation is gripping our state, driving up bills and letting people slip through the cracks," Mr Tilton said. "The environment is being vandalised by the major parties in order to satisfy their developer

donors at the big end of town. "Communities are divided by fear-mongering and scare campaigns about youth gangs, when co-operation and solidarity are the backbone of our neighbourhoods." Mr Tilton said the Greens plan to tackle these issues proactively. "We have exciting, innovative plans to improve public transport, stop the sell offs and return services like electricity to public hands, increase public housing so everyone has a safe place to call home and protect our beautiful forests," he said. "Cranbourne is a wonderful place to live and I'm so glad to be a part of this community. With the implementation of Greens policies, it can be even better. Together, we can create changes that will guarantee a better future for all of us."

Death after WorkSafe visit By Brendan Rees A Victorian WorkSafe inspector had conducted a safety visit of a factory in Cranbourne West - the same morning a young apprentice tragically died at the site. A 20-year-old Lynbrook man was working with power tools at the Marshall Lethlean factory in Whitfield Boulevard when he was "overcome with fumes" while working in the confined space about 10am on Thursday 4 October. Star News understands Mr Wu was a new apprentice at the transport vehicle servicing yard.
In a statement, Worksafe says "We can confirm that WorkSafe visited the site on the morning of the fatality in response to a service request about specific health and safety matters. "As our investigation into Mr Wu's death is continuing, it would be inappropriate to comment further." A Victoria Ambulance spokeswoman said three men aged in their thirties, forties and fifties were taken by ambulance to Dandenong Hospital in a stable condition at the time. Federal Opposition workplace relations spokesman Brendan O'Connor said the Mor-
rison Government must act to ensure that Mr Dillon's employer, the Australian Industry Group (Ai Group), were not putting new apprentices at risk at unsafe workplaces. "As far as Labor is concerned, no workplace should have identified safety hazards and not immediately do something about them," Mr O'Connor said. "The AiGroup receives a significant amount of federal government funding for their Apprentice and Trainee Centre, the programme that employed Mr Wu. According to Mr O'Connor, the ABC reported that AiGroup and Marshall Lethlean knew
about hazards before Mr Wu started as a new apprentice at the Marshall Lethlean factory. "Labor is very concerned about this incident and whether it reveals a systemic problem with the way AiGroup approaches workplace safety." "It is crucial that Ai Group and Marshall Lethlean participate fully to make clear the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident," Mr O'Connor said. Worksafe and police are investigating. AiGroup and Marshall Lethlean declined to comment on the matter.
Expansion is a class act By Brendan Rees Clyde Primary School would receive a $22.8 million expansion by 2022 if Labor is re-elected, Treasurer Tim Pallas has pledged. During his visit to the school on Friday 16 November, Mr Pallas said new facilities would be built to accommodate growing enrolments at the school and ensure that students have enough space to play outside. He said the type facilities had yet to be decided: "It's entirely up to the school community and Victorian Schools Building Authority to reach an agreement. "It's a big capital allocation for a primary school ... It's important that we meet the needs and expectations of the school community." A site next door to the school is expected to be acquired by June 2017 with construction to start shortly after. "An important part of this is to make sure that the school community have confidence in the conduction that's going to occur here," Mr Pallas said. Principal Fiona Pratt welcomed the an-
nouncement, saying an expansion was timely given the student enrolments were expected to grow from 407 to 470 next year. "Traditionally, Clyde has been quite a small rural school, and I think the urban development has actually caught up with the school," she said. "So definitely parents have been wondering what's going to happen next." The State Government says it has invested more than $3.8 billion to build new schools and upgrade 1,300 schools across the state since coming to office four years ago. "The Liberals closed schools and cut funding to our education system and given the chance, they'll do it again," Mr Pallas said. Labor Candidate for Bass Jordan Crugnale said the investment was important as the Clyde was one of the fastest growing areas in Australia. "Only Labor can be trusted to deliver the facilities that students and staff need, as our kids grow and learn," she said. The Coalition has been contacted for comment.
Celebrating the news of the school expansion were from rear, school vice-captain Ebony, school captain Cameron, and front, school captain Gracie, State Treasurer Tim Pallas, Labor candidate for Bass Jordan Crugnale, and school vice-captain Farshad. 187753 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

THE LOWDOWN Q&A
with Narre South Lions cricketer, Samantha Verhagen
THREE ‌ things to do if you breakdown on a freeway
What is something people don't know about you? Most people don't know that I am part of a band and play the saxophone. What's the best thing about playing cricket for Narre South? I get to be a part of a supportive and organised club that has given me the opportunity to be involved in an all-girls cricket team. Who's your favourite international cricketer? Ellyse Perry.
1
The best thing to do is exit the freeway at your earliest opportunity. High speed roadways and stationery or slow moving vehicles present a serious risk to all. If it's not safe to get out of the car, stay in your vehicle with your seat belt on.
2
If you can't exit the freeway, find a safe spot to pull over - like an emergency lane. Where there is no emergency lane, move as far to the left on the road as possible.
3
Make sure your vehicle can be seen by other drivers. Turn on your hazard lights and activate your headlights. Call emergency services, roadside assistance or the VicRoads Traffic Management Centre on 13 11 70, if required
Favourite holiday spot in Australia? Gold Coast. Would you rather score a century or get a hat trick? Hat-trick. At school I...... Really enjoyed science. What's your favourite movie? The Castle. Which six dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? Matt Smith, David Tennant, Karen Gillan, Tom Holland, Catherine Tate and Krysten Ritter. (All actors from Doctor Who and Marvel). What's your favourite book? The knife of never letting go by Patrick Ness (Part of the Chaos Walking Trilogy). Best concert you have been to? I've never been to a concert but would love to go and see Pink one day!

Elise said that while starting child care for the first time or making the transition to a new centre can be daunting, with the right support, children will thrive. "Taking part in our orientation process helps children become familiar with their new environment and start to make new friends. In
addition, my biggest tip to get your child excited about early learning is talking about all the fun activities and programs they'll be doing during their time with us! "I think children and families alike will love Clyde North Tuckers Road YMCA with its beautifully thought-out natural learning environments for children to explore. Safety, indoor and outdoor play, and inclusivity for children of all-abilities are key elements of our centre's design. "Plus, families will have the luxury of both our centre and Kingswim in the one conve-

Kingswim Clyde North Centre Manager Jarred Wolf and Centre Manager of the new YMCA Childcare Centre Elise Christie are thrilled to be bringing their services to the local Clyde North community. Jarred said he jumped at the chance to open Kingswim Clyde North and bring world-class swimming lessons to the local community. "Kingswim centres are known for their friendly and helpful culture and I can't wait to build another team that are genuinely passionate about swimming," he said. Jarred explained that he's always had a passion for sports and loved working with kids, making Kingswim the perfect opportunity to combine both and teach a lifesaving skill. "I hope the new centre will help educate local kids and the wider community on water safety and its importance," he said. For nervous parents, Jarred assures them that there's nothing to fear. "My best advice is to let children take the plunge and let us do the rest for you," he said. "We're experts at teaching kids to swim and know it's the little things that make learning to swim an enjoyable experience for parents and kids alike. "All our programs are Swim Australia registered, and all teachers hold nationally recognised qualifications, so you can be assured all our programs are up to date, relevant and accredited." Elise has been working in the early learning sector for 15 years and can't wait to open Clyde North Tuckers Road YMCA. "I was thrilled to be appointed Manager at the new centre," Elise said. "Being a local of the area, I cannot wait to welcome both new and local families to our centre and create a learning hub in Ramlegh Springs estate. "I believe having strong partnerships with

Let's get Major uni development the job done By Brendan Rees Ravichandran Ragupathy has promised to "get the job done" as he runs as an independent candidate for the Cranbourne electorate heading into the state election on Saturday 24 November. As an Indian migrant, Mr Ragupathy says he's seen and experienced the hardship of communities with a modest income, especially for those living in Cranbourne, despite economic prosperity Victoria has experienced last two decades. His plan is to provide a strong advocacy to increase funding for transport infrastructure to support both road and railway extension projects, support to parking infrastructure and space, and reducing crime rates. "Cranbourne is one of the fastest growing district with 7,000 population increase every year but the state has failed to provide community a safe and secured future from ever increasing crime," he said. Mr Ragupathy's said he would improve community safety from home burglaries, create new job opportunities, improve transport infrastructure, provide quality education and strengthen the diversity and multiculturalism to create a better community. "I stand as an independent candidate to address some of the above challenges and will work and pressure any government for the betterment of our Cranbourne community safety and secured future." Mr Ragupathy's policies for Cranbourne also include: Address hidden cost of living and support

Federation University will embark on a major re-development at its Berwick campus following a $40.7m injection from the Federal Government. The university has been investing in the campus since early 2017 and a new phase, approved by the university council last week, sets out an ambitious works program for 2019 to 2022 to accommodate increased student numbers. “We can now invest in the campus with more confidence and we can meet the communities needs and the governments supporting us in that,” Berwick campus director Greg Jakob said. “We can now look at other courses that we can bring into the campus that might not have been able to be considered for a number of years.” There are currently around 1600 students enrolled at the Berwick campus. Mr Jakob said there is likely to be around 3000 students by 2022.
“This is a great endorsement of the university and its capacity to engage with its local communities, to listen and deliver courses, facilities and graduate outcomes for the Berwick community and beyond,” Vice-Chancellor and president professor Helen Bartlett said. New developments at the Berwick campus will include: A third Nursing Clinical Learning Environment (CLE) to support increased nursing student enrolments. An additional science laboratory to expand science teaching capabilities at the campus. Additional academic, technical and professional staff work areas to accommodate projected increase in staffing. Expanded library and learning support areas to incorporate additional learning spaces for increased student numbers and provide for emerging research student work area. The St John of God Berwick Hospital team says that there is a range of questions expecting parents need to have answers to before they decide to get pregnant. “Did you know that most private health funds require you to take out cover for a minimum of 12 months prior to having your baby? That means that if you want to access expert care in exceptional comfort at St John of God Berwick Hospital you need to research health insurance providers, along with your hospital and obstetrician choices long before you decide to get pregnant,” a St John of God spokesperson said. “Do you want to be able to choose your obstetrician? Does your obstetrician work in the hospital you’d like to deliver your baby at? How much will it cost in the private system as opposed to the public one? Why is choosing the private system better for you and the health of your baby? What extra comforts and services differentiate St John of God Berwick Hospital from other hospitals in your area? How can you prepare for pregnancy?”
With over 100 years of experience delivering babies in the local region, St John of God Berwick Hospital is well-placed to give expecting parents all the information they will need in order to make a more informed decision about planning for a family. “Getting pregnant can be an exciting and yet overwhelming experience but it doesn’t have to be that way if you take advantage of St John of God Berwick Hospital’s family planning information session being held on Saturday 17 November at its Kangan Drive location,” a St John of God spokesperson said. “All families, even grandparents-to-be, are welcome to attend the free information sessions which run for 30 minutes and include a behind the scenes tour of the hospital’s maternity ward.” Running every 30 minutes from 11am to 12:30pm, session times can be reserved online at sjog.org.au/berwickpregnancyplanning. PROPERTY NEWS
GIVE GENEROUSLY URGES PARKLEA PARKLEA'S Christmas Gift Drive is back this year, in its fourth consecutive year bringing Christmas joy to children in need. The annual drive brings the community together to support disadvantaged families, with gifts delivered via local charities, The 4C's and Windermere. These two local charities help thousands of families across the Cardinia Shire with financial support, housing, job assistance, counselling, life skills training and connection to services. Parklea supports their valuable work and its through community initiative's such as the Gift Drive that helps bring Christmas cheer to families who can't provide their children with a festive Christmas, due to financial obstacles. "We are very grateful for the contribution Parklea makes each year. Many of the children who received the gifts are victims of financial hardship, broken relationships and family violence," said Cheryl Daly, General Manager of The 4C's. Belinda Barker, Fundraising Coordinator for Windermere Child and Family Services, believes that donating brings benefits to everyone in the community. “Since our beginning more than 150 years ago, we have been working to create a stronger, more connected and supported community. The Parklea Christmas Gift Drive is a wonderful example of local residents providing support to others and helping to strengthen our collective future.” This year, following the overwhelming success of this year’s Parklea Winter Food Drive, there will be a variety of donation locations throughout the Cardinia Shire. “The Christmas Gift Drive demonstrates the community spirit and kindness of people within Officer and the wider Cardinia Shire. Going by the generosity of residents who participated in the Food Drive, this year it will
be even bigger and better,” said Jarod Mills, Parklea Sales and Marketing manager. Dig deep this year and bring some Christmas cheer to local families, by donating gifts to children aged 0-16 to drop off locations. If you run a local business and wish to offer your business as a drop-off location for next year's gift drive, contact Parklea via parklea.com/dropoff-location Donations are welcomed until 17 December, however early donations are greatly appreciated. ●

He’s up for the Challenge By Nick Creely Cranbourne pro triathlete Levi Maxwell admits it's a monkey off his back after a stunning result at the iconic Challenge Shepparton recently. The significance of taking out his first professional title at the 11 November race after overcoming plenty of self-doubt and setbacks can't be understated. To Maxwell, it reinforces why he's devoted his life to one of the most gruelling sports on the planet. "It was a big learning experience - I've been a pro for nearly two and a half years now, and I had a lot of success as an age grouper, but I had all this confidence going in. I've had some unlucky things go against me, and some dry results, so doubt does start to creep in and you start to get injuries," he told Star News Group. "To get the result, it's a monkey off the back, it's giving me confidence to back myself a bit more, and not put things on a pedestal as much." In the half-distance race comprising of a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride and 21.1km run on Remembrance Day, Maxwell won with a time of 3 hours, 46 minutes and 43 seconds, 47 seconds ahead of the second placed Tim Van Berkel. He explained that he came into the race in solid form, but said that the Shepparton race was an entirely different beast to conquer. "I've had quite a few really good results lately - two or three weeks before Shepparton, I had the Australian Duathlon Championships, and won that," he said. "It's normally a pretty competitive field, usually with the best athletes in Australasia. "I kind of entered the race last minute, it wasn't really on my radar, I was kind of just getting back into it - I was doing just some
speed work, not really the long stuff, but it was too good of an opportunity to pass up. "Shepparton's one of my favourite events, there's only a handful of long course races left in Victoria, and it's kind of an iconic one that's been around a long time, and the locals get into it." Maxwell didn't have it his own way, and had to claw back to take the lead during his run, storming home despite the fatigue that set in on the final lap. "I had a reasonably good swim, about a minute behind the lead, and I just rode hard and got back up," he said. "It became a bit cat and mouse; people were playing games, and trying to break away or whatever, and you had to decide whether it was worth going with them and spending that little bit of energy. "Towards the end of the second lap a few guys were in pain a bit and sort of dropped off, and Luke Bell got off the front and Tim Berkel decided to go for it. I knew he was a good runner, so I decided I'd stay with him so I did. "We ended up overtaking Bell, and it was Berkel out front and myself in second - he was probably 10 seconds ahead of me, and got him about 2kms into the run. He just kept looking at his watch and showing signs that he was hurting a little, so I decided to keep going and build a gap. "I pretty much built maybe a 90 second lead, but in the last lap, it was the end of the race, and I was hurting a fair bit - he was making some gains, probably not enough to put me in trouble, but enough for me to go 'ok, I need to be switched on, and do enough to hold him off'. "I ended up winning by about 50 seconds, which doesn't sound like a lot, but it is."
Levi Maxwell celebrates after taking out Challenge Shepparton. Picture: COURTESY OF STEF HANSON Maxwell said it gives him belief going forward, and hopes it can be the perfect catalyst for a perfect summer season. "It was my first big series pro win, Challenge is one of the top series in the world, and so to have the win on Remembrance Day in
Shepparton against some of the best athletes in the world was awesome," he said. "I've had some second place finishes, and there's a big difference between first and second, so it definitely cemented in my mind that I'm doing the right thing, and that I can do it."
Swans and Panthers go toe-to-toe in a Premier thriller By Nick Creely It was absorbing, intense Premier Cricket, with local rivals itching for bragging rights. And while runs flowed and the bat definitely trumped the ball over the course of the Saturday and Sunday clash, the contest was nonetheless engrossing, with twists and turns at every corner. But in the end, a draw was all that could be salvaged as Casey-South Melbourne very nearly chased down Dandenong's mammoth 370 off the back of a sublime 154 to skipper Luke Wells in the final hour of day two. The Swans won the toss and elected to bowl, with a slight breeze making for comfortable conditions at a picturesque Casey Fields. The first ball of the match very nearly yielded a wicket, with spearhead Nathan Lambden roaring in excitement as a ball seared into the pads of visiting skipper Tom Donnell. It could have been one of the game changers, and a huge unsettler for the Panthers, but luckily, the umpire didn't agree, and shook his head as the Swans waited in anticipation. Donnell (75) and his dangerous opening partner, Brett Forsyth, were beginning to look comfortable and find gaps around a ground that was lightning along the surface, before the latter was perhaps harshly adjudged caught behind for 25 to give the home side their opening wicket. Jackson Fry (3/61) forced an edgy looking Ed Newman to find Luke Wells at slip, who took a belter of a catch to remove the left hander, and suddenly, the Panthers were 2/67. Aggression, and a combination of hard running and deft touches were the highlight of Donnell and LJ Edwards (57), who after lunch, piled on the runs, with the pair making the most of the older ball and lightning outfield. But, Wells (1/56) and his leggies struck, trapping Edwards in front just when it looked like he could get out of hand, and then, within a few overs, rising spinner Jonah Serong (1/63) brought the game back to level pegging by denying a disappointed Donnell a century, getting through the gate with a sharp piece of offspin. But the final session truly belonged with the 32 STAR NEWS

The Swans celebrate the early wicket of Ed Newman on day one at Casey Fields. 187705 Picture: ROB CAREW reigning premiers, cracking 141 runs and making the Swans run ragged around the field. It started with champion all-rounder James Nanopoulos (86), who despite starting slowly and pushing the ball around, very quickly found his groove as the late afternoon sun made batting the only place you'd want to be, in a sign of what he's capable of with the bat.
Thursday, 22 November, 2018
With spin the go to for Wells, the Panthers made the tiring bowling side pay, with spinner Akshat Buch (48 not out) and veteran Darren Pattinson (23 off 12 balls) launching late, with Donnell declaring late on a monster 8/369. Ryan Quirk was almost immediately gone the next morning, trapped LBW by James Nanopoulos (4/75), and with young seamer
Jakeb Thomas snaring the edge of Jared Maxwell (14) in the first hour, the Swans were looking a long way from giving the chase a shake at 2/37. But, similar to how day one unfolded, batting became easier as the day progressed, and crucially, skipper Luke Wells was there, playing with his usual fluency and class. Wells and his vice-captain Lachlan Sperling (36) worked hard before lunch to put on 60 runs, before the untimely departure of the latter only minutes before the end of the first session. Fresh off a century, Michael Wallace once again looked in strong touch, continuing to rotate the strike. Despite Wallace being snared by seamer James Wilcock for 36, Wells' brilliant knock was saluted with his century just before the tea break - his second in just five digs at the club - getting his side to 4/215 with little over two hours of game time left. It was then the talented Jordan Wyatt's (54) turn to dig in and find some form in conjunction with his confident skipper, and the dynamic middle-order player was in his groove, enjoying the freedom of the chase as he began to use all of his aggressive attitude to swing the game in the home side's favour. But Nanopoulos snared Wyatt at an opportune time, with the star all-rounder continuing his fine game by stamping his authority in the big moments. Nanopoulos, however, picked up the Panthers' sixth wicket with Dev Pollock caught for 23 and with 44 runs left to get, before he ended the innings of the skipper for 154 moments later, with the safe hands of Brett Forsyth giving the visitors a chance to reverse the tide and surge for a win. Next over, James Wilcock picked up his third, rattling the stumps of Nathan Lambden to bring the Swans to 8/328 with minutes left to play. But Serong and Maxwell managed to fight out the remaining few overs, with the Swans scraping their way to 8/332 at stumps despite some intense pressure. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Casey Demons are setting their VNL foundations By Hayley Wildes The Casey Demons' inaugural Victorian Netball League (VNL) squad is coming together nicely ahead of the 2019 season. After gaining a VNL licence earlier this year, the Casey Demons got straight to work in setting the foundations for a strong future. Casey recently announced the signings of Emma Ryde and Erin Bell, both of whom have Suncorp Super Netball experience and will be key cogs in Casey's offence. Bell is a dual netball World Cup gold medallist as a member of the Australian Diamonds in 2011 and 2015, and most recently played for the Collingwood Magpies in Suncorp Super Netball. Ryde represented Australia at the 2017 Under-21 World Youth Cup, made her Suncorp Super Netball debut in 2016 and grew up in Dandenong. Both players are goalers and coach Robynn Pym is thrilled to have them on board for season 2019. "It's exciting that we've signed Emma and Erin," Pym said. "They've come on board, they live in the area and they're very excited to take the culture of the group to another level, which I think is going to help the club get a kick start. "Erin has retired from Suncorp Super Netball and lives in the area and her partner Travis Tuck plays football for Berwick. This is her opportunity to give back to grassroots netball as well as still compete at a high level. "Emma had three years at Vixens - I coached her in 2015 and she was successful in that year of VNL and from there catapulted into a Vixens contract and a Vic Fury contract. She's a player pathway coach with our 13-and-under Casey representative team as well."
While Pym has her sights set on building a squad that can immediately challenge the best of the best on court, she is also focused on building a strong link between the club and the community. "I want our girls to know that there's a greater world outside of netball. If we don't have the results on court when we start, then so be it, but we want to be pillars of society and the local community," Pym said. "I've seen VNL clubs come into areas and offer contracts to players they haven't even really seen or know - I want to know the girls and I want them feel free to come to the club because they see the program that we're running." With the VNL season set to kick off in April 2019, the Casey Demons look set to make plenty of noise in their debut season.

Local stars to achieve AFL dream By Hayley Wildes
The Cranbourne Division 1 bowls ladies together at Doncaster.
Division 1 ladies Maureen Cameron, Lynne Wood and Shirley Venville were happy winners.
Cranbourne ladies roll past Doncaster Maureen Cameron was the outstanding bowler for Cranbourne on Tuesday - contributing heavily to an 18-shot win on her rink, playing away at Doncaster. Her skip, Lynne Wood, and team mates Joyce Pearce and club life member Shirley Venville were all full of praise for Maureen and the high standard of bowls shots she played all day. This was a great victory for Cranbourne, winning by 23 shots overall and establishing them genuine contenders in the competition. The Cranbourne Division 1 ladies travelled across to Doncaster to play on a beautiful grass green that seemed to suit the away team more than the home team.
The game was reasonably close at the lunch break, with Cranbourne just slightly in front by eight shots, but after the break the Cranbourne ladies rallied after a quick pep talk and went on to reach another level, especially with Maureen Cameron raising the bar and playing some outstanding bowls throughout the day. Skip Yvonne Van Der Wees returned after a few weeks away from bowls and asserted her authority on the opposition, winning by nine shots with help from her team mates Sandra Mueller, Helen Witherden and Kath Dudink also making excellent contributions. In the end it was a great victory to Cranbourne by 23 shots, which will give them great
confidence coming up against powerhouse side Glen Waverley after a one week break. Cranbourne Ladies 71 (14 points) defeated Doncaster 48. The Saturday competition resumes next week after having a one week break Midweek Bowls The Midweek Bowls results this week were:Cranbourne 2 Div 2 open 39 (2 points) lost to Cardinia Waters 60 Cranbourne 3 Div 3 open 61 (14 points) defeated Mulgrave Country Club 55 Cranbourne 4 six a side open 43 (12 points) defeated Cardinia Waters 32
With the 2018 AFL Draft kicking off on Thursday and continuing on Friday, there are plenty of local stars to keep an eye on, with the Dandenong Stingrays boasting an array of potential draftees. The Rays took home the 2018 TAC Cup Premiership - the first in their history - and it was their depth of talent that won them the flag. Because of this, expect plenty of Stingrays' names to be called over the two-day draft. Sam Sturt and Bailey Williams are Dandenong's top prospects. Sturt's meteoric rise into a potential top-20 draft pick is incredible. A prodigious cricket talent, Sturt only broke into the Stingrays side late in the season, but his athleticism and brilliance around goal immediately stood out. Williams has long been seen as a potential first round selection and although he has drifted throughout the year, he will most likely be taken around the pick 30 mark. The club that drafts him will be getting a versatile player, one that can play forward or ruck, and despite his size can compete with the best of them on the ground. Will Hamill and Toby Bedford may be the next Rays selected. Bedford, who is a Melbourne Next Generation Academy player, will find his way to Melbourne as they can match any bid for him. The Demons currently hold picks 29, 32, 38 and 54; 38 or 54 will most likely be used on Bedford. Hamill is an exciting prospect with speed and smarts, he will offer his new club run and carry and will most likely be selected somewhere in the range of 35 to 55. Riley Bowman and Zac Foot offer plenty of value as late picks and should end up finding an AFL home. Bowman is one of the best ruck prospects in the draft and a team looking to develop a young ruck won't go wrong by selecting Bowman. Foot can play all over the ground and whether he goes forward or has a run in the midfield, has proven himself as a bonafide AFL draft prospect. The likes of Sam Fletcher and Mitch Riordan are a chance to find AFL homes and if they aren't selected in the national draft, are tantalising rookie draft prospects. Captain Campbell Hustwaite, who came equal-third in the TAC Cup best and fairest, also wouldn't disappoint as a rookie selection.
The Hastings skins winners at Narre Warren, Nigel Sandercock, Bill Ruttenbeek, and Ken White with Narre secretary Reg Johnstone.
Changing weather greets bowlers The Narre Warren Midweek Pennant action was governed by the changing weather, with muggy conditions in the morning followed by a windy afternoon. At Fountain Gate, the Division 2 side played Berwick and had a comfortable win. Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar won well (26-9), while Eric Sydenham, Reg young, Wally Finlayson and Wilma Stevenson drew 19-19. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Erik Luyters and Brent Hone just missed out, going down 16-19. Narre Warren (1) 13-61 defeated Berwick (3) 3-47.
The Division 3 side travelled to Carrum to play beside the beach, in the open and the wind. Arthur Fitt, Derek Fenn, Janice Moran and Colin Groom won 23-18; and Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire, Ernesto Vergara and Arthur Scheurer won 21-18; but Stan Bulmer, Pam Uren, Keith Mark and Geoff Miller went down 10-25. Narre Warren (2) 4-54 lost to Carrum (2) 1261. The Division A (six-a-side) outfit was at Willow Lodge under the roof. Jeanette Cox, Helen McCarthy and Truus Henneman just went
down 22-23, and Susan Hawkins, Enid Gibb and Judy Naughton went down 11-19. Narre Warren (3) 0-33 lost to Willow Lodge (2) 14-42. There was no Saturday Pennant this week due to the Victorian Open being played. Narre Warren took the opportunity to run its Barry Plant November 'Skins' tournament. More than 20 teams signed on from as far as Hastings and Garfield. The winner on the day was the Hastings team of Ken White, Nigel Sandercock and Bill Ruttenbeek, who won 13 of their 15 two-end games.
Action-packed tournament lights up Berwick Berwick Bowling Club hosted its first bowler's arm tournament on November 12, with pairs playing three games of 10 ends.
