Assisted by Park Lane Men's Hairdressing, Tyrone Brache, Miller Keck, Brodie Styles and Thomas Staehr let the clippers take control and have raised around $3000.

Cheered on by the entire school, the boys came through it with bare heads.

Someone even threw in an extra $50 is Thomas' dad Clinton had his head shaved, which he duly obliged.

The four Year 6 students were left rubbing their scalps after the shave, but were delighted to do so for such a worthy cause.

Whale washed up state of decomposition when found.

"The preferred method for disposal of a whale of this size is to bury it above the high tide line at the base of the sand dune," DELWP Regional Agency Commander Aimee Haywood said.

"The whale will naturally decompose and pose little risk of attracting sharks to the area.

"We are currently working with the City of Greater Geelong, Victorian Fisheries Authority and Traditional Owner groups to reduce risks to public safety and ensure the operation has a

limited impact on the environment."

An advice message remained in place over the weekend for people not to swim in the area due to heightened risk of sharks.

Surfing Victoria and Surfing Australia postponed the Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp on the weekend due to the whale carcass.

The event that was scheduled to run at Ocean Grove Main Beach and is part of the national series and was expecting over 80 junior competitors from across Victoria.

"The safety of competitors at our events is our first priority," Surfing Victoria CEO Adam Robertson said.

Whale remains are protected by law and must not be interfered with by members of the public.

A whale carcass that washed ashore at Collendina was buried by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) officers.

The carcass was discovered last Thursday morning and kept surfers and swimmers out of the water at 5W due to increased risk of shark activity.

DELWP said burial of the whale is an environmentally friendly option that allows the whale to naturally decompose.

I have also previously been President of the Geelong Trades Hall Council and currently sit on the executive. I'm also co-convener of the Geelong Women Unionists Network which has recently pulled off our second successful women's conference aiming to engage women in their unions and in grassroots activism.

My name is Jackie Kriz and I am the Victorian Socialist candidate for the Bellarine District. I am one of 12 committed trade unionists running in the Western Region supporting Tim Gooden, former Geelong Trades Hall Secretary, in his bid for the Western Region Legislative Council.

I have been a worker and a unionist all my life and I think things are really tough for us today. We desperately need more jobs and if the private sector won't create them then government must.

Throughout the last 40 years I have been a public sector nurse currently working in community aged mental health. I believe healthcare is a critical issue for everyone and I strongly support fully funded public healthcare facilities. In most regional areas there are not enough hospitals, beds or specialists and anything major means a trip to Melbourne. Victorian Socialists are committed to restoring public health in all areas and ending the outsourcing of services such as pathology, radiology, food, cleaning, security, even patient television access.

I have lived in Ocean Grove for 10 years and enjoy the community atmosphere and beautiful environment. I live with my senior dog Roxy, and I foster animals when I can.

I am a psychologist and have worked as a counsellor in community health on the Bellarine Peninsula for nine years, and more recently also in private practice in Geelong.

I am passionate about both animal and human rights and welfare, as well as environmentalism. I am involved in various forms of animal rights advocacy and activism, and also human rights and social justice activities.

The government must provide a voice for the animals. We need an independent office of animal protection, a complete ban of all live export, and we must stop the cruel greyhound racing industry. We must ensure Victoria finally joins other states and puts an end to the barbaric duck shooting season, which occurs for three months of the year at locations in our Lake Connewarre area.

We also need to have the toxic bait Sodium Monofluoroacetate ('1080) banned, to prevent the torturous death of wildlife and domestic animals, occurring on our Bellarine foreshores, reserves, and semi-rural properties.

2018 STATE ELECTION

Bellarine a marginal seat The electoral district of Bellarine covers 367 square kilometres and stretches from the Bellarine Peninsula to the outer eastern suburbs of Geelong.

It includes the towns of Barwon Heads, Clifton Springs, Drysdale, Indented Head, Ocean Grove, Point Lonsdale, Portarlington and

Queenscliff and the Geelong suburbs of Leopold and Moolap.

It lies within the Western Victoria Region of the upper house, the Legislative Council.

The seat is currently held by Lisa Neville of the Labor Party with a margin of 1.37%.

Total enrolments at the 2014 elections were

the 1992 election by the Liberal Party's Garry Spry, who held the seat until his retirement in 2002.

Lisa Neville won in 2002, defeating Liberal's Ron Nelson and has held the seat ever since.

Ms Neville holds the seat with a margin of 1.37%.

at 42,541 with 40575 (95.38% of the total enrolment as at the close of rolls rechecked) total votes being recorded and 1964 informal votes.

Bellarine has traditionally been a marginal seat.

Labor's Graham Ernst won the seat in the 1985 and 1988 elections but was defeated at

I was already in love with the stunning and unique coastline, and wonderful sense of community in this place that I now call home.

My connection to the area is family oriented and spans a number of decades.

I am a mother of two and a social worker who has worked in public mental health for about 20 years in Canberra, Fiji, Melbourne and Geelong.

I work with people who have mental illnesses and have come into contact with the criminal justice system. This has made me passionate about ensuring that local public health services are efficient and accessible to everyone.

I will always be an advocate for infrastructure that enhances our community's resources, that protects our beautiful local environment and is ecologically sustainable.

I also want to ensure that our community has access to well-resourced local schools, affordable housing, public transport, child care, health and community services.

Brian McKiterick, Liberal I am a 39 year Victoria policeman, with over a decade of those years spent patrolling the Bellarine, Surf Coast and Geelong.

I live in Ocean Grove with my family and love embracing all the Bellarine has to offer including the beaches, the individual townships and the amazing local produce that comes from our hard-working farmers.

Already I have been standing up with the community to fight for issues that matter. I have committed to upgrade Orton St intersection, to duplicate Barwon Heads Rd, to rebuild the Point Lonsdale Surf Rescue Base which has been riddled with concrete cancer but also the funds to complete the upgrade of their clubrooms.

I have pledged $15million for a police station in Leopold with 24 hour capacity, $1 million to upgrade Portarlington, Queenscliff and Drysdale Police Stations and we're also investing in our local schools to ensure growing families on the Bellarine have access to quality education; $3 million for Our Lady Star of the Sea, Armstrong Creek Secondary College (benefitting many Barwon Heads families), and an autism specific school for those in the wider Geelong region.

We're also investing in the Solar in Schools program (such as in Clifton Springs Primary School) and importantly enshrining Bellarine as a distinct landscape to ensure it isn't laden with development as recently seen under La-

bor. It will also reduce the height limit back to two storeys from Labor's three. It is beyond belief that development has been allowed and promoted to get as out of control on Bellarine as it has recently.

This election is a time for you to make your vote count and I hope you will see me as a great candidate to trust as your strong representative. I want to make Bellarine even better.

I want to work within the community, not just for it.

I hope you will cast your vote on 24 November for a candidate who is excited to stand up strongly for the community and ensure we have our voices heard.

Our festive scouts Ocean Grove Scout Group is full steam ahead for its annual Christmas tree sale on Saturday 1 and Sunday 8 December at Ocean Grove Park.

This year they will also be selling trees from the Bunnings carpark in Leopold on Saturday 1, Sunday 2, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 December.

The big Christmas tree sale is the group's major fundraiser for the year, enabling them to provide their Joey, Cub and Scout youth members with a variety of fun, exciting and challenging activities throughout the year.

Preparations are well underway, with Christmas trees already ordered and the Joey, Cub and Scout youth members getting ready to decorate the promotional signs for displaying around the Ocean Grove Park and surrounds.

Christmas tree prices start at $55 (up to 6ft tree) and then increase in price by $5 per foot.

There are several options for purchasing your tree: •฀ Come along to the Ocean Grove Park or Bunnings in Leopold, select your tree and take it home with you •฀ Personally select your tree at the Ocean Grove Park and have it delivered (for a small fee) by one of the friendly Scout Group helpers.

•฀ Order your tree online at www.oceangrovescouts. com for either pick up or delivery on any of the sales days (check the delivery zone prices on the website) Christmas tree stands in various sizes are also available for purchase, starting at $25.

Ocean Grove Scout Group also offers a pickup service after Christmas to recycle your tree - simply register for the pick-up service (either at the park/Bunnings or online) and then leave your tree out for collection on Saturday 5 January 2019.

A flat fee of $10 covers pick up and recycling of your tree in all zones.

Art show committee chair John Calnin was pleased with the result.

"We have been running the art show for eight years now and each year have been able to give a healthy amount to our main charities, Riding Develops Abilities and the Disabled Surfers Association," he said.

Best Overall Work of Art in Show was regular participant Jill Shalless who took home $2500 for her work 'Foliage Tapestry'.

Grove crew runners-up A local surf boat crew claimed second spot at the Life Saving Victoria Surf Boat carnival at Ocean Grove SLSC on Sunday 11 November.

The composite Under 23 Ocean Grove SLSC/13th Beach SLSC women's crew was led by Ocean Grove SLSC surf boat captain and sweep Paul Scherf.

Ocean Grove's/13th Beach crew consisted of Felicity Fulcher, Sam Webster, Grace Davey and Madi Wilding.

In the best of three races - St Kilda (30 points) won all races and grabbed top spot in the Under 23 female competition.

Ocean Grove/13th Beach (27 points) finished second and Mordialloc (24 points) came third.

Scherf said with an early start to season the local crew improved in each race.

"We got better as the day went along," Scherf told the Voice.

"It was the girls' first carnival - they were up against some good crews.

"We are a composite crew between two clubs.

"This is a Life Saving Victoria carnival (at Ocean Grove) and it is open to all clubs in the state. "It is very early in the season, so with the underage crews in the Under 19s and Under 23s it is a bit hard because (some were) finishing up exams or starting up exams at the time of the LSV Ocean Grove VSRL event."

SCHERF was hopeful Ocean Grove/13th

Beach would field more crews at the next Victorian Surfboat Rowers League (VSRL) competition at Lorne on 2 December, including a men's crew.

He said attracting more males into surf boats in the Ocean Grove region is a focus.

The November LSV event at Ocean Grove was the first surf boats carnival for the VSRL 2018/19 season. Clubs including Lorne, Torquay, Port Fairy, Port Campbell, Fairhaven and Portsea and Melbourne-based bayside crews St Kilda and Mordialloc competed in men's and women's competitions at Ocean Grove main beach this month.

"We would like to attract more males," he said. "It is great fitness and great camaraderie."

Man of many talents

By Justin Flynn Marty Jackson is a man of many sporting talents.

He was a gun gridiron player before suffering a serious leg injury while playing and doctors told him he would never walk again.

But walk he did and four years after taking up athletics, Jackson won a Commonwealth Games silver medal after his second placing in the F38 shot put earlier this year.

He is now an Australian para ice hockey representative.

The Ocean Grove arborist has just returned home after competing in the World Para Ice Hockey World Championships in Vierumaki, Finland.

The Aussie Ice Roos lost both their pool games - a 6-1 loss to the host nation and a hefty 40-nil loss to China.

"Competing in Finland was an incredible experience," Jackson told the Voice.

"We were staying at the Finland Institute of Sport and Olympic training centre. It was a live, eat and breathe ice hockey trip.

"To be able to compete where ice hockey is loved by all was just something else."

Jackson will now turn his attention back to the shot put.

"I'm fortunate that the major competitions of each sport fall on alternate years," he said.

"While we were beaten convincingly by both teams, this trip for the Ice Roos was about finding out where we sit in the scheme of thing, learning as much as we could and legitimising the sport for Australia, so that we could return and build our program."

The Ice Roos were initially going to make their international debut in 2020, but threw themselves into the deep end early.

"The 6-1 scoreline from our first game against Finland probably doesn't reflect how

Marty Jackson in action. well we played for first timers, with the Fins commenting that they weren't expecting us to make it that tough for them," he said.

"China are another story. They have been on the Ice together up to three times a day, seven days a week as a unit, since their formation. They were just too fast for us. We now know what we need to work on and were we need to be come out next chance to compete

State election candidates for the seat of Bellarine completed a series of public forums in Ocean Grove last week.

The forums, organised by the combined Bellarine community associations, allowed candidates to answer questions from members of the public in a public setting.

Forums were held at Point Lonsdale, Portarlington and Ocean Grove.

The Ocean Grove forum was attended by around 90 residents.

Forum facilitator Phil Edwards said around half of those were from Ocean Grove, one quarter from Barwon Heads with the rest from elsewhere on the peninsula. Four of the five candidates - Lisa Neville (Labor), Brian McKiterick (Liberal), Rachel Semmes (Greens) and Naomi Adams (Animal Justice) - attended with Victorian Socialists' Jackie Kriz an apology.

"We extended the session for an extra 15 minutes because we had lots of questions and the candidates were kind enough to agree to that," Mr Edwards said.

"We had 16 questions and they ranged from late termination of abortion, treatment of the CFA, duck shooting, Drysdale bypass, climate change, control of development, cyclists and safety, container deposits and recycling, education, mental health services, reconciliation, truck traffic through Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads and the Grubb Rd/Tuckfield Rd upgrade and the Bellarine link."

Mr Edwards said the forum was generally well received by the public.

"We had a really wide canvass of questions," he said.

"Overall it was good. And it was the last in a series of forums that were coordinated by the combined Bellarine community associations and I think it provided candidates and residents across the Bellarine with a good opportunity to exchange views.

"Collectively we were happy that we worked together and delivered the opportunity for residents."

Volunteers needed The region's newest community weekly run is seeking locals to help volunteer with the Ocean Grove parkrun.

The 5km Ocean Grove parkrun commences at 8am on Saturdays and meets at the Barwon Estuary Picnic area along Peers Crescent, which is adjacent to the Riverview Family Caravan Park.

The Ocean Grove parkrun course takes in the beautiful surrounds of the Barwon River with participants running two laps on a wide path with gravel and tarmac surfaces.

Ocean Grove parkrun celebrated its sixmonth anniversary in October and event codirector Graham Bignell said they were in need of more helpers for it to continue.

"That is the bottom line if we don't get the volunteers - we can't run it," Bignell said.

"We have gone close to cancelling a couple of times - you need a core set of volunteers."

The first Ocean Grove parkrun which launched in April this year attracted 247 participants.

Each week on average there are up to 70 participants per week which take part with volunteers ranging from five to 11.

"The minimum team is five (volunteers) and that is without marshals on the end," he said.

"Although it is better if something goes wrong you really need a marshal on the end of the course.

"Seven volunteers is much better and also eight volunteers including a photographer.

"Some other parkruns have their volunteer list full until the end of the year."

Bignell said the run was in need of more volunteers in December.

OCEAN Grove parkrun will take a five-week hiatus from late December and all of January due to peak summer holiday period and congestion flow around the Riverview Family Caravan Park precinct.

"They (Riverview) have been really helpful and we have talked to them," he said.

"There is a couple of crossovers from the caravan park to river - they have been supportive since the start.

"We had a quite few people (participants) staying there on the launch date."

Ocean Grove's final parkrun for 2018 is on 22 December before it resumes on 2 February in 2019.

Organisers have encouraged participants to visit nearby parkruns in the region during this time.

PARKRUN is worldwide with organised free weekly 5km timed runs taking place across Australia and around the globe.

In wider Geelong, they are weekly parkruns held on Saturday mornings at Eastern Gardens and also at Balyang Sanctuary in Geelong, Portarlington and Torquay.

Local author Alan Cobham is celebrating the release of his new book ‘What’s the point?’ by inviting Voice readers to get creative.

Alan’s purpose is writing ‘What’s the point?’ was to entice readers to have a go at training your imagination.

Three life members Barwon Heads Fire Brigade (BHFB) celebrated its service to the community at a formal dinner and awards night recently.

Attended by members of the brigade including Captain Helen Wood, 1st Lieutenant Brett Mitchell, 3rd Lieutenant Pete Burnett and 4th Lieutenant Matt Taylor, guests also included community supporters such as representatives from the All Saints Anglican Church Op Shop and members of the Ocean Grove Barwon Heads RSL Sub Branch. District 7 Operations Officer Ian Beswicke, performed official duties.

Captain Helen Wood said while members generally shunned the limelight in preference for letting their actions speak, it was important to acknowledge the role of the BHFB in protecting life and property in Barwon Heads, the Bellarine Peninsula and beyond.

"At the dinner we recognised the significant contribution members have made to the CFA and their community with a number of service awards presented and also awarded brigade life membership to three very worthy recipients," she said.

"Congratulations to all those recognised, I am very proud to be part of an organisation that does such valued work in the community - so far we have turned out to 50 incidents this year, and that requires team effort and ongoing commitment to being available and training throughout the year.

"In addition, we could not be as effective without the support of many local businesses and community organisations who regularly donate so that we may purchase vital equipment, so it is also an opportunity for us to say thank you very much for their ongoing support."

Awards were: Five year awards: Kira Crawford-Brooks, Clive Moulday and Vivienne Moulday, Nathan Rabbitts.

Brigade Life Member Awards: Frances Pavey joined Barwon Heads Fire Brigade in March 2003 and was involved with the brigade's auxiliary, holding the position of president for a number of years, as well as brigade treasurer from July 2010 to September 2015.

Frances received the Shaun Wilson Memorial 'Encouragement Award' in 2013.

Philip Pavey has 30 years' service with CFA, first joining Kyneton Fire Brigade in 1978. He has also been a member of Taradale and Seymour brigades, before transferring to Barwon Heads in September 2002. Phil was elected 4th Lieutenant and secretary/treasurer in 2004, became 3rd Lieutenant in 2006 and 1st Lieutenant in 2008. In 2009 Phil was elected captain and held this position until 2014. Phil was also 4th deputy group officer of the Bellarine Group from 2016 to 2018. Phil was awarded the National Medal in 2009, the First Clasp of the National Medal in 2015 and awarded CFA life membership in 2016.

Oxfam helps those in need Ocean Grove Oxfam International Group works to help people hit by disasters. Earthquakes, volcanoes erupting, land-slides, floods and famine - there have been many of these in the region this year. Oxfam members also raise money to support education and development projects for the self-sufficiency of people in poorer areas, including parts of Australia.

Money has been raised through twice yearly book sales for more than 30 years. Oxfam is attempting to raise at least $3000 to add to the

total over the years. A major newspaper group donates new books to the local group for sale.

The sales are staffed solely by volunteers and all money raised goes to Oxfam.

The next sale will be held on Saturday 24 November, at the Uniting Church Hall, corner Eggleston St and The Parade, Ocean Grove.

The sale is on from 9am to 1pm.

My question relates to the design and approval process that has been employed in the selection of new traffic infrastructure on the Bellarine.

I believe that the process is flawed and that a sound evidence based approval process is needed to ensure the safety and efficiency of Victoria's roads.

I am extremely concerned that over 100 mature trees will soon be cut down in order to construct three new sets of traffic lights at the entrance to Drysdale. Also that vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists (such as students walking or cycling to school) will be directed through these extremely busy intersections that will be subject to sun glare at peak periods.

My investigation of the available evidence shows that, in addition to destroying the pleasant ambience of the entrance to our township, these signalised intersections will result in more traffic congestion, more pollution, increased travel times and an increase in the number of injuries to motorists, to pedestrians and to cyclists. They will also incur an unnecessarily high construction cost and ongoing maintenance.

Drysdale/Clifton Springs traffic will have to pass through three new signalised intersections in order to travel the 1.5km from Lake Lorne Reserve to Leura Park. VicRoads' own analysis predicts that there will be average delays of 32 seconds at the first, 42 seconds at the second and 29 seconds at the third. This is a total delay of 103 seconds whereas, with the alternative well-designed roundabout option, VicRoads predicts delays of nine seconds or less.

In addition to being less traffic efficient, it is an undisputed fact that, with respect to traffic control, signalised intersections are significantly less safe than well-designed roundabouts.

It is also a fact that the safest treatment for pedestrians and cyclists is to provide 'active transport pathways' that are separated, as far as possible, from road traffic and these separated pathways were included in the roundabout proposal. Unfortunately, the traffic infrastructure that will be built will direct school children and cyclists directly through these very busy intersections and my investigations show that this will significantly increase the risk of injury to these vulnerable road users.

It is also a fact that local residents have been lobbying unsuccessfully for improvements to the uncontrolled and unsafe Hermsley/Portarlington Road intersection for many years and that this is now even more necessary with the opening of the new golf driving range.

These pleas have been ignored and instead, a new signalised road crossing of the Rail Trail is to be built that will compromise the possibility

What alternative route?

Regarding the Voice's article 'Traffic alterations for Barwon Heads' (7 November 2018) almost two years ago I wrote to the Echo about the chaos created by the installation of the Barwon Heads pedestrian crossings.

Call me cynical, but I doubt it's a coincidence that after Lisa Neville's "intense community lobbying and consultation" that resulted in the disastrous installation of the pedestrian crossings in Barwon Heads, she's now about to attempt to fix this mess she created just in time for the upcoming elections.

With a usual 2.5km, two-minute trip between Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads taking 20 to 25 minutes over summer, she's now suggesting we "seek an alternate route".

The only alternative route I'm aware of is 41.5km out Wallington Rd, along Bellarine Hwy, down to Marshall, back past Barwon Heads airport and along to Barwon Heads.

Lisa Neville has successfully taken all the Ocean Grove shoppers off the Barwon Heads traders over the summer months. I'm sure they'll thank her on election day.

Simple solution I have a fairly simplistic suggestion for the intersection of Presidents/Orton which does not involve traffic lights or a roundabout.

My suggestion is to close southbound access to Orton Street for traffic travelling south on Presidents Avenue. Make the area (of Presidents Ave) between Dare Street and Orton Street local traffic only.

Drivers wishing to access Orton from Presidents have plenty of options, east or west to access a much safer alternatives than this high collision intersection.

Poor vision is the main issue with Presidents Avenue traffic travelling south onto Orton. If you take that option away you remove most of the danger. There is no real problem leaving Presidents from the ocean side as vision is excellent.

Traffic using Dare Street or The Terrace to Access Wallington Road would probably not increase much at all as most locals won't use Presidents and Orton because a majority are already aware of the danger, they already use these alternatives. Non-locals wouldn't number that many except maybe in peak times (late Dec early Jan).

It is my submission that this intersection doesn't need a major spend, just a little local traffic management.

Barn owl avoids the lens It's been a totally glorious few weeks around the Bellarine, especially after a decent sprinkle of rain that occurred during the week.

I haven't had to venture far from home to see some wonderful birds, which has been great.

I was walking past the trees, down the path to Freshwater Lake during the week and unfortunately for me I was looking down at the ground, thinking that it was a good day for snakes, when an eastern barn owl flew out of a tree at head height, then flew around the area for around 30 seconds before disappearing, all in broad daylight.

I was so transfixed that I totally missed out on taking a photo of the beautiful creature, then was kicking myself for not looking up at the tree as I was walking as I'm sure that the owl was perched on a low branch. Needless to say I've been back to the same spot several times and looked up at the branches and not down at the ground, and of course the owl has been nowhere to be seen.

I participated in the statewide Latham's snipe count recently and I walked around Blue Waters Lake where I did see one elusive snipe at the eastern end of the lake. I also saw so much rubbish down that end of the lake, in fact every where I've been lately I've seen rubbish.

as these places are the jewels of the Bellarine, where it's possible to see creatures (if you are lucky) such as brolgas and bitterns and raptors and migratory shorebirds (and rubbish).

I can only imagine what the Ocean Grove Nature Reserve will be like when there is a McDonald's outlet opposite it.

Speaking of migratory shorebirds, I've seen several hundred over the last week, and haven't had to travel more than 10km from Ocean Grove, which has been wonderful.

There's been hundreds of sharp-tailed sandpipers and a few curlew sandpipers at Freshwater Lake and Lake Victoria, and I've also spotted a pair of Pacific golden plovers.

There are also red-necked avocets, whiskered terns, red-capped plovers and black-winged stilts (or white-headed stilts) at Lake Victoria, so it's just a wonderful place to check out.

I also saw a juvenile crake, which looked like a Ballion's, just wandering past all of the sharpies on the shoreline of Lake Victoria. It looked so vulnerable and there were no parent birds around, so I hope I see it again to know that it has survived. Kevin also paid a visit to Lake Victoria where he took some great images of sharpies and stilts. Thanks so much for your photos and observations Kevin.

Continuing the theme of migratory shorebirds, Carole sent me an email to let me know

that there are now 18 ruddy turnstones on the beach at St Leonards.

The ruddy turnstone is a stocky migratory shorebird with distinctive orange legs. The bill is wedge-shaped and slightly up turned.

The breast is black and brown with pale areas.

Ruddy turnstones are named after their feeding habit of turning over stones and seaweed to find insects, crustaceans, molluscs and spiders to eat. Thanks so much Carole for your email and observations.

I received an email from Sue, who lives in Old Ocean Grove, to say that she has an unusual bird in her garden. It is bigger than a lorikeet, and has an orange beak, green back, and a red and black breast. I have been to Sue's a few times but have not seen the bird, but it is visiting her garden daily, so I hope to see it soon.

I received an email from Martin who lives in Ocean Grove, who unusually, has not has a koel in his garden this year. He did tell me that he has observed a pair of resident marsh harriers at Swan Bay, as he has been there at least twice a week and they have always been there.

He has not seen a sea eagle or any other raptor.

On one of Martin's visits to Swan Bay he saw a large Caspian tern preening beside the boat ramp, quite uninterested in his presence.

Kevin sent me a photo of a superb fairy wren and he thought it was a young male

as it had a blue tail. As it had a brown beak I thought it was a female, as I've always thought that the male wrens have black beaks and females have brown beaks. Then we both read the great Trevor Prescott's article in the Geelong Advertiser about wrens where he said that the males have blue tails.I've heard from Andy, Ros, John, and Rosemary who live in Collendina, and it seems that the tawny frogmouth pair that live in their gardens have had a youngster fledge, which is great. The tawnies that I observe around Ocean Grove have at least one fluffy chick in their nest.

I also received an email from Coral and Roger, who wrote to ask if anyone else has mentioned a rise in the amount of currawongs in Ocean Grove. They have noticed quite a lot this year and they appear to have driven many of the other birds away (no ravens, very few starlings).

In their yard they found five dead birds and two dead lizards. The deceased included two starlings, one blackbird, one sparrow and one unidentified but appeared to be very young, and of course the lizards. They wondered if the currawongs could be responsible, as they have never had this amount of dead wildlife in our yard before. It's hard to tell, but I do know that currawongs and ravens are very efficient at eating young birds in nests. Thanks so much for your email Coral and Roger.

Young star is on the rise

By Justin Flynn Libby Steel hopes her performance at the Queenscliff Music Festival will kick start her music career.

After winning the triple j Unearthed competition to open the QMF, the 22-year-old realises this could be the break she has been hoping for.

"I'm very fortunate - it's been an exciting couple of weeks," she says.

"I'm so excited. I've worked really hard to get to this stage and now this feels like the next level.

"It's a different calibre of event so it really opens up doors for me."

Libby, who hails from Cobden, but is now living in Torquay, has had a number of smaller gigs, including supporting Taylor Henderson and playing at the Australian Open.

She has been dabbling in song writing and she says her music reflects her playful and youthful side.

"It's something that I've always loved doing and I still don't really think they're anything special - it's just the thoughts that come out of my head and it's made me more confident," she says.

"You just hope that people understand and appreciate it. My kind of writing is based around what I've personally experienced so it's a bit youthful and a bit playful."

Libby describes her music as "playful pop", but is reluctant to pigeon-hole herself to any specific style.

"Every song is so different," she says.

"It's hard to narrow it down to one genre.

I've got one jazz track and one pop song and a bit of everything.

"I love music as a whole and I don't want to

Close game, but Grove wins Sent in to bat by Barwon Heads on a cool windy morning the Ocean Grove Under 13 team set to the task of building an innings on their home ground at Memorial Reserve.

Against accurate bowling, Alex Joyce and Aidan Foard stayed composed and saw out the opening bowling.

Foard retired first and Joyce continued to build his innings before he also retired on 30 with an assured knock.

After losing two quick wickets Ocean Grove's middle order was under pressure.

Steady innings, however, from Henry Wood and Miller Keck took the score to 3/107 at the end of the first 26 overs.

Ocean Grove then fielded and took advantage of a good batting display with some early wickets to Wood with his late in-swingers and Foard had his quarry play a top spinner back onto his bails.

Barwon Heads pushed the scoring along and Ocean Grove continued to take important wickets. With Keck taking two in one over with some gripping and high-skipping leg spin - one stumped and one caught at mid-off - Ocean Grove finished in a strong position at the mid-point of the two day game.

The following Saturday was fine but a dewy turf had the boys trying to keep the ball off the ground.

Joyce helped here with a low catch in gully in the first over from Keck, who continued his great bowling and had Barwon Heads eight down and still behind the OG mid-way score.

The boys were way on top now. Barwon Heads stuck to the task though and got a few runs ahead and then added more and more again. It took a superb direct hit from Joyce to break the ninth-wicket stand and after some fun when a border collie stopped play while chasing swallows swooping across the outfield, a Henry Wood special yorker ended the Barwon Heads innings.

Ocean Grove and Drysdale stop for a moment's silence on 11 November before the start of their Level 2 game.

Ocean Grove had bowled Barwon Heads out for 173 in 44 overs. Wood (two wickets) and Keck (three) were the best bowlers. Coach Dean Platt was pleased with the bowling noting that: "Henry Wood clean bowls good bats" and Keck "loves the contest".

Now it was time to bat and bat to time. Batting to time is one of cricket's challenges and it was difficult now against a revived opposition.

Wood looked settled before he was caught at point for 21 to complete a fine all round game. Three more wickets fell quickly and the game was now evenly balanced.

With determination to bat to the next over, patience by Noah Dickson, Griff Anthony and returning retiree Foard saw Ocean Grove pushing the innings into the 47th over before it came down to the last wicket. Even with good

bowling, maiden overs are rare and the runs gently accumulated and progressed to within 14.

Merric Platt (returning retiree) confidently strode out to join Foard stopping half way to the pitch for an earnest chinwag, meeting like junior generals on a cricket field plotting their boy's own tactics.

Foard had been resolute and Platt bats with urgency, always. His second delivery was masterful square cut behind point propelling the team four runs closer.

Thereafter amid some lovely shots, risky running and good luck saw the boys victorious in the third last over when Platt edged four runs through the vacant slips.

"This was quite a compelling game", said Platt. "Close games are good games."

Ocean Grove and North Geelong stopped to pay their respects before their Level 3 cricket match on Remembrance Day.

Charlie Larsen, Taz Higgins, Merric Platt and Aidan Foard were all selected for the BPCA rep team.

St Josephs won the toss and elected to bat. The opening bowling combination of Oscar Walter and Nick Gibbon got things off to a great start. Gibbon, although, wicketless finished with the figures of 0/1 of 6 overs. His partner Walter was the chief destroyer of the innings finishing with the fine figures of 3/12 off 8 overs.

Luca Vella and Will Duncombe also bowled well taking two wickets each while Max McLachlan, Josh Kendell and Izaak Terhorst took one apiece. After being pinned down early, the St Joseph's line up made it to 10/136 off 42.2 overs.

batting again and put on a solid 24 run opening stand. Terhorst was dismissed for a great 20. Cam Snookes and Nick Gibbon combined for a 53 run 3rd wicket partnership to get the score to 81 when Gibbon was dismissed for 13.

Snookes went on to make a fine 53 retired not out. Snookes was the backbone of the innings and the combine went on to pass the total for a great victory against strong opposition in the top division.

Under 13 Ellwood Collendina Ellwood made the trip to Point Lonsdale to take on Queenscliff in this round 4 two day game. Cobra captain Ted Farrell won the toss and elected to bat. Ollie Terhorst and Ned Badrock opened the batting and put on a fine opening partnership. Both batsmen were dismissed with Terhorst making 16 and Badrock a solid 17. Harrisyn Wingrave was next in and had

to be retired during the first day but came back on the second day to make a great 50 runs for the Cobras. Ted Farrell was also damaging with a great captain's knock of 35. After batting on the second day the Cobras finished on a total of 9/165. The bowling on both days was good but the Queenscliff batting line up was strong.

Gus McCartney, Ollie Terhorst, Ted Farrell, Lachie Payne and Will Mitchell all took one wicket apiece and bowled well but the Coutas made it to a total of 5/213 and a round 4 victory.

Under 13 Walter Collendina Walter hosted Leopold in this round 4 two day game. Leopold won the toss and put the Cobras in. Noah Jeffrey and Fraser Stow opened the batting. Stow was dismissed early but Jeffrey went on to be retired during the first day to come back in late in the second week for a great total of 26 not out. Jack Every

came in at three and was also retired in the first day but came back late on the second day to also finish not out on 41. The first day saw George Every make a solid 16 and Angus Peters finish the day not out only to continue in the second week to finish with a solid score of 10. Lucas Anderson and Noah Coughlan combined well late in the innings for a partnership of 22 with Coughlan making 10 not out. The Cobras finished with a total of 142.

After the first day the very strong Leopold finished on 0/118 compared to the Cobras' 4/69. On the second day Leopold continued where they left off making it to 3/232. Tommy Walsh and Angus Peters took one wicket each and Peters and Noah Jeffrey were involved in a run out. A big 90 run win to Leopold but the Cobras will bounce back.

Grove prevails in Section 2 Battle of the Bridge clash Ocean Grove Section 2 Mens won its tennis Battle of the Bridge contest against Barwon Heads at home on Saturday.

Ocean Grove won 6 sets to Barwon Heads 0 sets and 37 games to 16 games.

The Grove quartet of John Hines, Sean Cronwright, Sam Hines and Sabastian Bouma all won their doubles matches.

Big win to undefeated OG

By Justin Flynn Ocean Grove scored a convincing round six win against Highton in Geelong-Ballarat Premier Bowls.

With a general bye being observed last weekend, Grove demolished Highton at home with a 134 to 55 scoreline.

The win kept Ocean Grove's unbeaten run intact and is in 2nd place on the ladder with only percentage separating it from top side Bareena.

All four of Grove's rinks won handsomely against Highton.

Matt Flapper (35 to 12), Tony Joel (39 to 14), William Collihole (35 to 16) and Michael West (25 to 13) skipped their rinks to decisive victories.

In Division 1, Ocean Grove came away with a 17-shot win against Highton.

Grove won 100 to 83 and sits 3rd on the ladder with a 4-2 record.

45-7 win, which proved the difference.

Grove demolished Leopold by 60 shots in Division 3.

The big win ensured Grove stayed on top of the ladder. All rinks enjoyed wins, but Lorraine Kirk skipped hers to a huge 44 to 14 triumph.

Leopold got the better of Ocean Grove in Division 5 with a 93 to 85 win.

In a battle between the two bottom teams, Leopold came up trumps, but it still wasn't enough to get it off the foot of the table.

It was a close tussle, though. Peter Kuschert and John Richards tied their rink while only one shot separated the David Stonehouse-Ron Coles and Terri Rudge-Kenneth Barker rinks.

Ocean Grove moved up to 5th place on the Division 6 ladder with a big win against Portarlington.

The 115 to 66 victory was made possible with Peter Townsend skipping his rink to a 4011 win.

Ocean Grove is on top of the Division 7 ladder and put away Clifton Springs with ease.

The Grovers won 119 to 69 with Lyn Stonehouse and Alby Touwslager enjoying big rink wins.

In Division 10, grove sits on top of the table after disposing of Point Lonsdale 65 to 42.

Martin Van Doren (37 to 25) and Graeme Constable (28 to 17) led their rinks to wins.

Drysdale had the better of Ocean Grove in Division 11 with a 54 to 35 win.

Marie Hughes and Debbie Wintle battled hard to get Grove into the contest, but Drysdale proved too strong on the day.

MEANWHILE Ocean Grove remained in top spot on the Division 1 midweek comp ladder despite losing to Highton 81 to 73.

Marlene Sutton's rink came away with a victory in a match that was tight all the way through.

A win for the Division 3 side against Eastern Park meant Ocean Grove ended the round on top of the ladder.

Margaret Carroll, Sandra Murphy and Terri Rudge all skipped their rinks to wins.

Grove suffered an unexpected loss to City of Geelong in Division 4, but is nicely placed in 3rd position on the ladder.

Elizabeth Braley skipped her rink to a win and Joyce Fraser tied her rink in the 70 to 80 loss.

Belmont surprised Ocean Grove in Division 5 with a 72 to 70 win.

The loss saw Grove in 3rd spot at the end of the round. Lyn Stonehouse skipped her rink to a nine-shot victory.

Grove moved up to 3rd position on the Division 6 ladder with a 70 to 41 win against St Leonards.

Lorraine Oliver and Shelley Westlake led their rinks to impressive wins.

In Division 7, Grove is in 2nd place on the table after a 19-shot win against Belmont.

Patricia O'Brien skipped her rink of Jan Hudson, Kevin Richards and Andrew Johnston to a 36-14 victory.

Walter steps up in Lamb's absence to take five wickets

By Mark Heenan A five-wicket haul from Collendina A1 captain Nathan Walter has given the Cobras a shot at victory against Anglesea in their two-day clash at Ellimatta Reserve.

Walter finished with the figures of 5/91 from 20 overs and removed dangerous Kangaroo openers Ned Cooper (54) and Stephen Jacimovic (1) and gun middle order batsman Tyron Norman (35).

Anglesea was all out for 220 from 74.2 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first.

Cooper has scored three half centuries for Anglesea this season with scores of 62, 58 and 54.

Walter was forced to shoulder more bowling in the absence of Charlie Lamb (unavailable) after Lamb bowled a marathon stint of 33 overs a week earlier in the club's A1 two-day match against Drysdale on 11 November.

Walter said it was a positive to bowl out last season's reigning A Grade premiers inside 75 overs without Lamb.

The Cobras went into the match opting to play an extra batsman with Matt Davies coming into the side.

"We knew at the start of the day we were short of a bowler and we knew we going to be up against it," Walter told the Voice.

"We were pretty happy with Anglesea getting 220 - it is probably par on their ground without our massive strike bowler."

Walter was well supported by experienced bowler Jye Hearps (2/48) who bowled 17 overs.

Cobra youngster Craig Goodger finished with the economical figures of 2/34 from 17.2 overs and six maidens.

It was the first time Goodger had bowled more than 10 overs in an A1 match.

Cobra vice-captain Ben Ricardo took three catches, while Max Sutton claimed two catches after returning to A1 wicket-keeping duties.

Walter is confident of a strong performance with the bat this Saturday with a batting line up which boasts Ricardo, Sutton and Lancaster as a lower order batsman after scores of 45 not out in A1 against Drysdale and 41 not out in their side's T20 clash against Queenscliff last week.

"I have got faith in our team and I will back us in for sure," Walter said.

The Cobras (15 points) sit in fourth position with Anglesea (15 points) in fifth spot on percentage.

Collendina lost to Anglesea in their Round 1 one-day clash at the Snake Pit on 6 October.

B1 COLLEDNINA B1 recovered from a middle order collapse to post a competitive total of 9/179 from 75 overs against Anglesea.

At one stage the Cobras appeared destined for a team score of around 100 after Anglesea had the home side 8/97.

Batting at number 10, Julian Wilson played a sensible late order innings to finish on 43 not out.

Wilson combined in a 32-run ninth wicket stand with Cobra bowler Sam Tucker (16), while Daniel Worn (17 not out) put on an unbroken 50-run partnership with Wilson.

Earlier in the innings B1 captain Des Every (22) and Steve Blackman (27) made handy contributions.

Anglesea requires 180 runs for victory.

C1 IN C1, Collendina resumes at 1/15 this Saturday in their two-day clash against Barrabool at

Belmont Common.

The Cobras bowled out the Bulls for 107 from 52 overs after the home side won the toss and batted first.

Collendina opening bowler Liam Tipping (4/23) claimed a four-wicket haul from his 16 overs.

Liam McManus and Ryan Jones each took two wickets apiece.

The Cobras are in fifth spot on the BPCA C1 ladder with a 2-3 record after five rounds.

D GRADE ARMSTRONG Creek defeated Collendina D Grade by eight wickets in their one-day clash at Bellarine Secondary College's Ocean Grove campus on Saturday.

In a high scoring game, the Cobras compiled 5/197 from its 40 overs.

Craig Jeffrey top scored with 78.

Rock solid appointment

By Mark Heenan Ocean Grove Football Netball Club has appointed Grubber 2003 BFL premiership player Liam Rock as its new director of football.

Rock, 33, who retired at the end of the 2017 season after 180 senior games, won the best on ground medal at the 2003 BFL grand final against Geelong Amateur as an 18-year-old.

The 2003 grand final was the scene of Ocean Grove's last senior premiership.

Rock, a former Ocean Grove captain, said after a season out of the game he was feeling refreshed to to be involved in a non-playing capacity with the Grubbers.

"The club approached me about two weeks ago and it was all finalised last week," Rock told the Voice. "I have had a year out of footy after I retired so it is about giving back and helping the club achieve success again."

He said there was an emphasis on retaining its core playing group from 2018 after the departure of trio Andrew Jarvis, Jahd Anderson and Matt Caldow to GFL club South Barwon for 2019. "I am going through and signing up the current players from last season," he said.

OGFNC director of administration and club secretary, John Wilkins, has welcomed Rock's appointment.

"From a club point of view, we are very happy to have him signed up and he has hit the ground running and he is getting around to all the players - so he will be a real asset to the club," Wilkins said.

160-run stand rescues Ocean Grove after being 5/71

By Mark Heenan Star batting pair Paul Jubber and Matt Caulfield helped Ocean Grove into a commanding position at stumps against Drysdale on Saturday.

Playing coach Paul Jubber (113) scored his third hundred for the Grubbers, while new recruit Caulfield belted four sixes and nine boundaries in his innings of 95.

Ocean Grove was all out for 264 from 71.1 overs on day one of the round six two-day clash.

Drysdale seized control of the match early on its home deck to have Ocean Grove in deep trouble at 5/71.

It was carnage at one stage the visitors were reeling at 4/36 with its top order of Huon Bertino (3), Mick Thornton (4), Andre Scholtz (9) Michael Kenneady (0) all out in quick succession.

Jubber who hit 16 boundaries and one six, then combined in a 160-run fifth wicket partnership with Caulfield.

Jubber conceded the Grubbers had a fight on their hands to resurrect their innings after a poor start.

"Our backs were against the wall and he (Caulfield) was very determined and was up for the contest - so really pleased for him to make an impact as he has with both bat and ball," Jubber told the Voice.

"I think Matt and I sort of put the game back on our terms."

Jubber praised the Drysdale bowlers including new ball opener Blake Robinson, who took 3/46 from 17 overs.

"Drysdale bowled really well early and they capitalised and took their opportunities and then they missed a few catches - that probably cost them dearly," "They played pretty well early doors.

"Blake (Robinson) hits the pitch pretty hard, swings the ball late, he bowls pretty straight he was their best bowler."

Drysdale Cricket Club coach Shane Cutajar said it was a tough way to end the day after the bottom-placed Hawks struck with four early wickets for the second time in three weeks.

"It is two (games) in a row we have taken four really early vital wickets against two really good batting sides," Cutajar said.

"Unfortunately for us we feel we were on the end of two really stiff LBW decisions - one of the guys goes onto make a hundred and one guy goes onto make 95."

OCEAN Grove A1 suffered its first loss of the season on 11 November going down to reigning A Grade premier Anglesea at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval.

The Grubbers are still at the top of the A1 ladder with a 4-1 record after five rounds.

A2 LINDON Giuffrida cashed in with the bat to

score his first ever hundred as Ocean Grove A2 compiled a strong first innings total against Newcomb on day one of its two-day game at Ray Menzies Memorial Oval.

Giuffrida, an A1 bowler relegated to A2 at the expense of Billy Foord Englesman who made his A1 debut after his A2 seven-wicket haul on 11 November, smashed 11 boundaries in a blistering knock of 103.

The Grubbers won the toss and batted first, finishing on 7/249 from 75 overs.

Jubber said he was pleased for Giuffrida who showcased his all-round talents after being dropped from A1.

"We were really pleased for Lindo, we're delighted he has scored his first hundred for the club," Jubber said.

"Most importantly it was his response to being dropped and fighting back and putting his hand up to play back in the A1s which was the most pleasing aspect."

Giuffrida shared in an 87-run fourth wicket partnership stand with youngster Fletcher Long (53) who scored a timely half-century.

B2 OCEAN Grove B2 requires 278 runs for victory against Jan Juc when its two-day clash resumes this Saturday at Bellbrae Reserve.

Batting first the Sharks compiled 9/277 from 60 overs.

Grubbers bowlers Marcus Wirth (2/28), Tahj Wirth (2/52) and Matthew Stanic (2/53) all took two wickets apiece.

The Jan Juc trio of Gerard Cook (50) Dennis Bilston (51) and Cole Fox (50 not out) all scored half centuries.

D GRADE A crucial unbeaten knock of 85 not out from Greg Scarpa helped Ocean Grove D Grade score a 65-run victory in its one-day clash against Wallington.

Batting first at Ocean Grove Memorial Recreation Reserve the Grubbers piled on the runs to finish at 3/217 from 40 overs.

Tyler Carmody was unbeaten on 50, while Zack Carmody was 44 not out.

In reply Wallington was all out for 152 from 37.1 overs.

Ocean Grove's Zac Soutar (front) is making a name for himself in the field of motor sport.

Ocean Grove’s rising star Rising Ocean Grove motorsport star Zac Soutar has claimed 3rd place overall in this year's Australian Formula Ford Championship.

The 21 year old has had a breakthrough season in Australia's premiere junior motorsport category, with the highlight being both a race and round win at Sandown International Raceway earlier in the year.

Further podium results at Queensland Raceway, The Bend Motorsport Park and Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit assisted Zac in securing the impressive overall championship finish.

What makes Zac's achievements even more outstanding, is the fact that he competes as a privateer entry in his own, family-run team, racing against a long list of experienced, professional Formula Ford teams in fields of up to 30 cars.

By virtue of being the highest placed privateer in this year's National Championship point standings, Zac has also been honoured with the Privateers Cup award, capping off a season to remember for both team and driver.

"I'm absolutely stoked" said Soutar.

"We definitely didn't expect to be in the top three of the championship at the start of the

year, so to come away with this kind of resultas the small, family-run team we are, is fantastic.

"So much hard work and sacrifice has gone

into making this year possible, and I can't thank my family, friends and sponsors enough for their support."

When quizzed about his motorsport plans for the future, Soutar said his ultimate goal would be to race cars on a professional level.

"The dream is definitely to become a professional racing car driver," he said.

"I've always had a passion for categories such as the Supercars Championship and the Porsche Carrera Cup here in Australia.

"I would definitely love to try my hand at something like that given the opportunity. In saying this, the world of professional motorsport is a hard one to break in to, but I will, without a doubt, be giving it my best shot."

Zac will be taking part in this year's edition of the Geelong Revival Motoring Festival over the weekend.

Throughout this weekend, he plans to have the Formula Ford on display across both days of the event, along with competing in the Waterfront's Quarter Mile Sprint.
