Pakenham’s biggest eyesore is set to be renovated and transformed into a thriving education space, under a proposal by Cardinia Shire. The Henry Road cesspit - last week featured by Star News for being littered with filth, empty beer bottles and soiled mattresses - would be leased to Community College Gippsland (CCG) under a 15 year agreement. Council will deliberate on the decision in the coming week. If approved, it would enter a community consultation phase. The College has over 40 years of teaching history, with campuses delivering accredit courses in Warragul, Pakenham and Leongatha. While CCG is already locked into an existing contact with council to lease 126 Princes Highway, Pakenham, the school reportedly requires more space to expand. Known as the “Lion’s Den”, the Henry Road site used to accommodate the Lions Club - before it relocated to Cardinia Road. The site has since been abandoned. A local performing arts group subsequently used the hall to practice, but it was marred with chaos. “The football rooms were, until recently, used by the performing arts company but unfortunately it kept getting broken into and we often had to clean up rubbish and homemade bongs before rehearsals,“ the group’s Joanne Arrowsmith said. “They removed the fence to try to stop it being used as a hangout but it didn’t make a difference. “There was often equipment being stolen
and trashed, but this was before the homeless people used the spot.“ The facility was then earmarked for demolition, as part of the PB Ronald Masterplan. However, councillors intervened - expressing the site’s potential for future community use. CCG has even offered to bankroll $300,000 of the $681,000 required to revitalise the building. The contribution will be considered as an offset to the rental for the first 10 years. After a decade, it is proposed the College pay $43,674 per annum, with a 2.5 per cent incremental increase each year. The College provides an alternate learning environment for teenagers and young adults, who are given the opportunity to gain a secondary qualification (VCAL) and develop practical skills for a job, trade or further study. Jim Richardson, who lives a stone-throw from the site, praised the council’s proactivity. He claimed the site, in recent months, had become so “unsightly” that it was impacting potential property sales. “This is very smart, forward thinking by the council,” he said. “For them to turn this place around into something productive for the community, that would be wonderful. “I can probably speak for most the community when they say they’d rather a school than a place where people are drinking and taking drugs.”

Show a roaring success Officer Primary School's inaugural Motor Show was a roaring success, with crowds flocking to get a glimpse of the classic cars on show. Taking place on Saturday 10 November, school Principal Lynne Brenner was blown away by the outcome on the day. "It was a very successful day; we had over 70 classic cars come on the day from all over the place," Ms Brenner said. "The weather was beautiful; we had a rock band, a dance instructor demonstrating the
moves and lots of people dressed in rockabillystyle outfits. "While we haven't got a finalised figure we think we raised around $6000, which will go towards refurbishing some of our classrooms." The event was attended by students, parents and the wider community, with some classic car drivers coming from as far as the western suburbs. The 'Kids Zone' provided endless entertainment for the little ones, with face painting, crazy hair, a fake boxing ring and more. The day was such a success that the school

Doubt cast over road fix By Kyra Gillespie A new development has emerged in the community’s long-winded battle to get a pedestrian crossing installed on Windermere Boulevard in Pakenham. After months of petitioning by residents, Cardinia Shire Council confirmed they had received advice from VicRoads approving the installation for the crossing on the busy thoroughfare. However, Gembrook MP Brad Battin has cast doubt over the positive announcement, claiming the council are trying to stall the issue beyond the state election. While he had been told that council are in the processes of designing the crossing, which includes the provision of lighting and cost estimates, Mr Battin is concerned by the lack of funding allocated to the project. He claims that with no funding in place, the project is unlikely to go ahead unless the State Government becomes involved. “Yes they have been approved, but the issue is that they don’t have any funding in place to build or do anything - there’s no funding there,” Mr Battin said. “The funding is nowhere to be seen in their five year plan. I think they’re trying to push it out past the election to try and palm to off to the successive government. “They have to come out and say they are putting money in the budget for it, otherwise all it’s got is planning and no funding.” While unable to provide a commencement date or a completion date for the project, council’s General Manager of Assets and Services, Michael Ellis said they were aiming for early next year. “Based on strong support from the community, council is working to provide a Zebra style pedestrian crossing and associated traffic treatments and lighting upgrades at Winder-

“Council cannot nominate a specific completion date until the consultants have completed the design and provided the scope of works and cost estimates. However, we expect works on a new crossing to commence early in 2019.” Pakenham Primary School, which feeds off Windermere Boulevard on Atlantic Drive, is on
track to open Term 1 next year. Early Childhood Educator Tamika Hicks, hopes the crossing will be in place before then. “It’s still back with the council and seems to be semi-resolved,” she said. “Families and children will be put at risk if it’s not done.”

By Kyra Gillespie Police are on the lookout for a speeding driver who evaded police by driving down the wrong side of the freeway, smashing into boom gates and abandoning their car. Around 7.50pm on Monday 12 November police sighted a Toyota Land Cruiser speeding at 130km/h in a 90 zone along HealesvilleKooweerup Road. The traffic unit attempted to catch the driver, but broke off the pursuit when they entered the Princes Freeway via the wrong off-ramp and into oncoming traffic. The driver then drove through active boom gates on McGregor Road, colliding with one of them. The car was found abandoned on Waroona Court, Pakenham a short while later. The Police Dog Squad attended but was unable to trace the driver.

Union activists stage a protest By Kyra Gillespie A group of local union activists from the sprawling electorate of Bass held a protest outside Brian Paynter MP's office on Thursday 1 October. Wielding a giant mock resume for Brian Paynter and the Liberal party, the activists were calling on Mr Paynter to prove his fitness for the role as MP for Bass after the state election. The group also delivered a stack of petition names from voters within the Bass electorate, collected over the last seven months. The 2581 names represented people who had pledged to vote at the upcoming state election based on the issues of wage theft, industrial manslaughter, education, and aged care. The local unionists took issue with Mr Paynter's stance on penalty rates and public holidays, claiming he had previously called the Easter Sunday public holiday an "absolute crime" and spoken of public holiday rates for retail and hospitality workers being too high. Jack Garton from Cape Woolamai said he hoped locals were paying attention to Mr Paynter's silence on issues that matter to locals. "Wage theft has affected me personally, and from my conversations with locals it's an issue that lots of people in this electorate care about. It's about justice for working people who are being exploited," Mr Garton said. "The Liberal Party has been absolutely silent on this issue and it's not good enough - Mr Paynter needs to justify his silence".
A group of local union activists held a protest outside Brian Paynter MP’s office. 187318 Campaign organiser Claire Boland from the Victorian Trades Hall Council admitted that no effort has been made to contact Mr Paynter about the issues. "We haven't met with Brian and we have made an effort to," she said. The Bass MP was not concerned about the protest, saying the group was more interested in "grandstanding" than the issues protested. "Instead of protesting they could give me the courtesy of a phone call or a meeting," Mr Paynter said. "They're more focused on publicity and grandstanding than dealing with the issues they are protesting about.
"I've met with hundreds of people over the years to discuss issues of concern, but these people have never done that. They only have to ring the office and ask." Mr Paynter said the petition doesn't contain any surnames, addresses or signatures. He also said the issues were largely of federal concern. "Wage theft, industry manslaughter and education are all federal matters, why would I be speaking out on these issues? "The issues are all so different from one another, so why are they protesting together? What do penalty rates have to do with aged care for example? I think they've got ulterior motives."
Eight in the race for Bass By Rowan Forster Seven candidates are vying to topple the Liberal Party in the Bass electorate, while Gembrook will only be contested by the major parties. Nominations officially closed on Friday 9 November, setting the field for the state election on 24 November. Voters in Bass will be spoilt for choice, while only Liberal, Labor and the Greens have stepped up to the plate in Brad Battin’s Gembrook seat. In Bass, the following candidates are running for selection. MP Brian Paynter, representing the Liberal Party. Clare Le Serve, an independent. Jordan Crugnale, representing the Labor Party. Ross McPhee, representing the Democratic Labour Party. Ron Bauer, an independent. Kate Lempriere, an independent. Frank Ripa, representing the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers. Home stretch for scouts By Rowan Forster Lakeside Scout Group's seven-year itch to find a permanent home would be relieved under an elected Guy Liberal Government. The pack has been forced to meet at hired venues since 2011, when it was first created. Volunteers have lobbied for a permanent hall, but those pleas fell upon deaf ears until last week. Bass MP Brian Paynter revealed the State Opposition will match a $600,000 contribution by Scouts Victoria - allowing the group to build a new home. "This investment will deliver a secure place for the members, as they are currently using a school gymnasium. "While they're incredibly appreciative of being able to use the facility, it's very difficult to be able to function out of another building. "Without that funding commitment, it's very difficult to plan a future site." Mr Paynter said it was important to support the thriving scout group, given the region's exploding population. "With the way the community is heading, I think the scouts have a really important role to play," he added. "It seems to be, from what I've seen, a particularly caring and nurturing group. "I will ensure our enthusiastic and committed scouts will continue to get the support they deserve." Scout halls are used by a wide range of community, social and school groups, with more than 20,000 scouts participating across Victoria. The cash pledge was made alongside Shadow Minister for Young Victorians, Steph Ryan. "Scout halls need our help - we want to support scouts and guides because they give young people great skills for life," she said.

"It's a great development for us as we've been going around in circles for a few years now," he said. 'If they get voted in, it will make a big difference for us. "You lose ability and you lose ownership of the group by not having a hall.
"It'll be a home for us and a common ground to work with and it will help the group develop." If the funding is secured, the Coalition would work alongside Scouts Victoria and Cardinia Shire to identify an appropriate location for the facility.

OPINION Free to ask Casey councillor, Sam Aziz, might prefer to claim that The Sunday Age's recent story on Casey councillors and developers is untrue. But if that is the case, why does Casey Council refuse to allow ratepayers to ask questions about these and other issues at public question time? Why does Casey Council have some of its staff (who are paid by ratepayers) engaged in censoring what questions are acceptable to council and what questions will not be accepted or answered by councillors or its officers during public question time? What does Casey Council have to hide? Is it really appropriate that Casey Council should use our money in this way? Why is it that some councils allow ratepayers to ask their own questions,except Casey Council? Casey council's use of censorship to stop residents from asking "controversial" questions can only be seen as being very disrespectful. It rests on a very narrow concept of democracy and transparency. At the end of the day, it also raises more questions about the standard of leadership from both council and from the Andrews Government. Because neither Luke Donnellan, or Judith Graley, both local Labor MPs, have done a thing to empower Casey ratepayers, by demanding changes to Casey's "censored" public question time. Don't councils exist to serve the interests of their local communities? IN BRIEF Joy ride crash Four youths in a stolen car were arrested and charged by police following a joy ride across Pakenham. Police observed a stolen Volkswagen speeding on Henry Road around 7.20pm on Friday 2 November. A scan of the number plate revealed the vehicle had been involved in multiple offences, including petrol theft. The car sped straight through a red light at Cardinia Road without stopping, after which police followed at a distance. The car then crashed into road infrastructure at the intersection of Cardinia Road and Henry Road. The four offending youths, aged between 15 and 16, were arrested by police and charged with a number of offences, including theft of a motor car.

Industrial fire Police responded to an industrial fire at Metal Men Recycling yard in Pakenham on Saturday 3 November. The fire broke out around 11.30am when the owner and two employees noticed smoke pouring out from a pile of metal. They then moved the material onto some tarmac and extinguished the blaze using dry chemicals. Emergency services attended the scene and declared it safe. One person was taken to hospital with breathing difficulties. WorkSafe are investigating the incident.

Bungled burglary A Meeking Drive resident almost had a car stolen from their driveway on Monday 5 November. Police were told the resident was home when he heard voices coming from his front porch. When he went outside to investigate he caught two men attempting to steal his mother’s car, which was parked in the driveway. When the offenders saw the man they crashed the car into a pillar in a panic, and fled on foot. The resident approached the car, switched off the running engine and contacted police. It’s believed the would-be burglars took the keys from the kitchen table near the front door. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Pakenham assault Police responded to reports of an assault in Pakenham on Tuesday 6 November. Investigators have been told a man who was walking along John Street about 7pm. The victim, a 24-year-old man, was approached by a group of males, perceived to be African in appearance who assaulted the man and stole his mobile phone. He sustained non-life threatening injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene. A 17-year-old and two 15-year-olds are currently assisting police with their enquiries. Swapping the crown as ‘Mr Yakkerboo’ for the historic mayoral robes, Councillor Graeme Moore welcomed his election as Cardinia Shire Council Mayor for 2019. Backed six to three as the shire’s leader over fellow nominee Cr Leticia Wilmot on Monday 12 October, the popular Port Ward councillor said his term as mayor would be “fun.” “I’m excited, good to be back in the chair again after four years away. I can’t wait to get back on the ground and into the community I love,” he said. “It’s going to be a great year; we’re not going to just be serious, we’re going to have some fun with this as well. “The community has put us in these positions as councillors to represent them at this table sure, but we still have a life to live, and I think we can make this as enjoyable as we can.” Now in his third term as councillor, the Nar Nar Goon father of three was beaming from ear-to-ear as he made the opening speech as mayor, with his family cheering on from the chambers. “I’m just over the moon - thanks to the councillors for voting me in and entrusting me with the position. It’s very humbling. “I want to thank my family, because without them I wouldn’t be able to achieve half the things that I do in the community.” It is the second time Cr Moore has been Mayor, having previously filled the role in 2013-14 and that of Deputy Mayor in 2014-15. One of the mayor’s goals for the year is to continue the shire’s Together We Can program, improving domestic violence statistics locally and supporting vulnerable families. “I want to continue the Together We Can program, of which I’m an ambassador for. I think it’s the crux of our community; I think we need to support those vulnerable families that are in our community.”

Police are investigating an attempted aggravated burglary which took place at a home on Rose Garden Avenue in Officer on Wednesday 7 November. A mother was home while her two kids, nine and six, were playing in the bedroom at the rear of the house. Upon noticing a sound at around 8pm, she went to the front of the house where she saw an unknown man entering via a sliding door. The brave woman confronted the offender, who she described as a Caucasian male wearing a black hoodie and sunglasses. He then ran out via the sliding door, jumping the side fence before disappearing. Police have not yet located the man and urge the community to make contact on 59452500 if they have any information.

Ladies frock up for Oaks By Jessica Anstice Headpieces and fine outfits were at must at the Inner Wheel Club of Berwick's annual fundraising Oaks Day luncheon event on Thursday, 8 November. More than 100 women dressed to impress at the Cranbourne Turd Club. Over 100 women attended the luncheon to raise funds for the Inner Wheel Australia Foundation Trust which supports research into the users of stem cells found in both cord and placental blood. "To date Inner Wheel Australia has awarded grants totalling just on $2.8 million for this vital research," Inner Wheel Club of Berwick's Kay Morland said. "A portion of the funds from this year's luncheon will also be used to support local charities." The Fashions on the Field competition was a hit, with winners including Annette Celer as Most Elegant Lady, Trish Tabak for Haute Couture Headwear and Colleen Wright for the 2018 Fabulous Filly. "The highlights of the event are undoubtedly the Fashions on the Field and of course the races themselves which, thanks to the Cranbourne Turf Club we enjoyed on the big screen from the comfort of our lunch tables," Ms Morland said. "There is no better venue for a race day themed event than a race track and the Cranbourne Turf Club is the perfect venue, the room was filled with an excited buzz all day. "'Girls just wanna have fun' and what better way to do it than to frock up, pop on a hat and enjoy a day 'at the races' while raising money for a good cause."

REMEMBRANCE DAY
Diggers remembered It was all about names and faces at Pakenham Remembrance Day ceremony on Sunday. To mark the Centenary of Armistice, a book was launched written by local historian Patrick Ferry outlining the stories of all those remembered on Pakenham district war memorials and honour boards. Each of those 145 names was read out by descendants. And later in the ceremony a new plaque was unveiled recognising the service of 50 service personnel from various confilcts not previously recognised on the memorial. Again, their names were read out by relatives of some of that group. Patrick Ferry filled the keynote speaking role and afterwards his book was launched by Star News Group editor Garry Howe. Mr Ferry spoke of the joy felt in the then small community of Pakenham at news of the armistice 100 years ago to the day - but also the sadness at the realization that of the 145 who served, 25 per cent would not return. He said that for the past two years he had been researching who the Pakenham Diggers were. “The idea for the project came from the realisation that with the passage of time, the Diggers are inevitably passing from living memory into history. And as an historian, I am conscious that even though their names are carved into stone, they will potentially become obscured by a little bit of dust, even forgotten altogether.� Mr Ferry said the key focus of the project was to try to locate photographs of the Diggers - literally, to put a face to the names on memorials. A sanctuary in retirement Moving to Sanctuary Lifestyle at Drouin has been a family affair for Kevin Smith and Geoff Crouch. The pair are mates but also brothers-inlaw. Kevin is married to Geoff’s twin sister Liz. The couples now live only meters apart in the rapidly growing retirement community. They were among the more than 100 guests who gathered on Wednesday 17 October to celebrate the official opening of the Sanctuary Lifestyle clubhouse. Geoff and wife Marianne were among the first to move into Sanctuary Lifestyle when it was little more than a “construction zone“ in July 2017. They were joined by Kevin and Liz in April. “We like the area, the fact that you can still see farms and trees. We have electric bikes and enjoy riding them on the bike trails,“ said Geoff. “People are friendly. You can come to the clubhouse any time of day and there will be someone to have coffee with.“ “The management are very helpful and open,“ added Kevin. Shirley Davidson and her partner Don Stanners moved from Corinella to Sanctuary Lifestyle in August. “We looked at other (villages) but we
would have had to buy a used house. Here all the houses are brand new. We were even able to pick the site we wanted," Shirley said. Don uses the gym regularly and Shirley is learning to play bowls on the village green. “We didn’t know anybody when we came here but we’ve met lots of people. It’s been wonderful,“ Shirley said. Annette Nicholls and her husband Michael moved to Sanctuary Lifestyle in September. They left their home in Geelong to be closer to their son and grandchildren.

Annette described the facilities at Sanctuary Lifestyle as “incredible". “The people are very friendly and from my bedroom I can see two cows,“ she said with a delighted laugh. He said moving to Drouin had given himself and his wife “a new lease on life“. “Sanctuary Lifestyle really is a great lifestyle,“ Leigh said. “It really has been good for us. The lifestyle here is all about enjoying life with the security of knowing you are not alone.“

Bowls - now it’s on for young and old Students from Kooweerup Secondary College have hustled to destroy the misconception that bowls is for the elderly. Boasting a relaxing pace and arguably light physical demands, the sport has been generalised as one for retirees since the first Australian club was established in 1846. However, in Kooweerup, it is a very different story. According to Kooweerup Bowls' Steve Payne, teenage students are increasingly becoming interested by the activity. The club hosted bowl-offs for Kooweerup Secondary College students early in November. "As we are a small club within the Kooweerup community, we are endeavouring to give our younger community a light induction to bowls," he said. "We were impressed by the way they conducted themselves whilst at the club and they were a credit to their school on both days. It's not just a sport for older people." The club has gone to lengths to welcome young people into the sport.

Fashionistas shine at Oaks It was all about the fashion at this year’s Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day as fashionistas from far and wide flocked to Tynong to strut their stuff. Entrants took to the stage to take part in four sections including Mature Lady of the Day, Best Dressed Gentleman, Best Dressed Couple and Lady of the Day. While the competitions were judged by Lynda Hayes, Magda DAbaco and Belle Wouters, the event itself was hosted by the vibrant Casey Bruce. With all eyes on the ladies, the day kicked off with Mature Lady of the Day which was won by Bunyip resident Lydia Marson. In a highly competitive field, Lydia took out the top title with an elegant, floral-patterned midi dress which she paired with a stunning white hat made by her sister at Erin Bridget Millinery. Her dress was Australian made and purchased at Little Black Bird in Berwick. But it wasn’t all about the ladies, with the gentlemen putting on an impressive show for the Best Dressed Gentleman title. However, there could only be one winner, with Pakenham’s Scott Cooper proudly taking out the top title. Dressed by the team at Tarocash Menswear, Scott donned a classic race day look, pairing a navy blue suit with a maroon tie and white shirt.
To tie it all together, his camel-coloured shoes perfectly matched the wristband of his watch. The day’s Best Dressed Couple sash was awarded to Jindivick’s Jess Mills and Longwarry’s Dom Pullen. The stylish couple - who entered the competition at the last minute - perfectly complimented each other with a timeless approach to their outfits. Dressed in a graceful cream lace dress, Jess’s black Forever New fascinator perfectly matched Dom’s black suit pant and playful black bow tie. Offsetting Jess’s outfit flawlessly was Dom’s burgundy shirt. The final event of the day saw Moe’s Maddi McConnell take home the coveted Lady of the Day title. The seasoned fashionista took to the stage in a striking yellow dress made by Nicky Schembri of Traralgon. Admitting she loves a bold fashion statement, Maddi donned a dazzling purple and blue headpiece by Eleanor Marguerite and matching heels by Sam Edelman. Her blue clutch by Olga Berg complimented her fascinator exquisitely. New coaches take charge in TAC Cup By Nick Creely The Gippsland Power has announced that Rhett McLennan has been appointed as the senior coach and regional coaching director for its TAC Cup side in 2019. A veteran of football and coaching, McLennan played 306 games including three senior premierships, and has coached at major country and metropolitan clubs for 14 years. McLennan has been involved with the Power program for four years as an assistant coach, and has coached the Under 16 Power team for the past two years. He said he is excited by the opportunity to coach some of the elite talent in the region. “I’m really looking forward to the challenge” McLennan said. Having been involved with Gippsland Power now for several years, McLennan knows what it takes to reach the highest level having had pre-seasons with the Brisbane Football Club and the Carlton Football Club. “(The role) is not new to me as I have been here for four years and coached a lot of these boys in the Under 16 Gippsland Power team over the past two seasons” McLennan said. “I’m really looking forward to the excitement of getting out there and working closely with the boys at training and helping them reach their goals and dreams.” Down at Shepley Oval, the Dandenong Stingrays have also changed hands, with longtime assistant coach Nick Cox announced as the new senior coach. Cox was the front runner to take charge of the Rays after five successful seasons under outgoing coach Craig Black, who has joined Collingwood as a development coach. On several occasions, Cox has stepped in as coach in Black’s absence to great success, and will have plenty of talent at his disposal when his group returns for the 2019 pre-season.

Chris 'Wog Boy' Kondarios won A Grade, that's right A Grade, with 43 points on Wednesday 7 November. Our own 'Benjamin Button', John Kingman (41 points) was runner up. The B Grade winner was Willy Carmichael (43 points). He has been playing flawless golf over the past month after purchasing sunglasses to alleviate his watery eyes in the early wee hours of the morning. Derek Page (41 points) was again runner up and has been enjoying his golf over the last couple of months with his new clubs. John Kingman (23 points) won the supercomp around the front nine and you won a ball with 37 points. The winner in the ladies stableford comp on Thursday 8 November was Carol Beard (34 points). Carol's scores have been up and down like a yo-yo over the last month, so let's hope she can continue with this form. Leah Barker and Norma Crebbin won a ball with 32 points and 31 points respectively. The winner of the stableford competition on Friday 9 November was Brian Tollkuhn (38 points) and the twilight winner was Tym Davey (22 points). The members played stableford on Saturday 10 November and there were some awesome results in each grade. The overall winner and A Grade winner was Paul Capper (41 points), ahead of Rich Paton (37 points). Paul is finding form at the correct time of the year with club championships starting this Saturday. The B Grade winner was Noel Bonne (38 points), on countback from Robin McCrae, who continued where he left off after his fiveweek holiday. The C Grade winner was Ross Stewart (40 points), ahead of Duncan Campbell (36 points). You won a ball with 36 points. The winner on Sunday 11 November was Dom Lewin (42 points) with a magnificent score. Dom is reducing his handicap very quickly and is nearly under 20. Great work Dom!
Swans continue impressive build in an exciting new era By Nick Creely Casey-South Melbourne doesn't want to simply make up the numbers. It wants to be a threat. After clinically knocking over Camberwell Magpies on Saturday away from home, the new look Swans are sitting just outside the top eight, a terrific start to the season by any measure. They're building something that has previously been lacking. The Magpies were always on the back foot after a sublime hundred by Michael Wallace (125) on day one saw the visitors set a formidable 330 for victory. Wallace's ton was significant for many reasons. He came in at 3/30 and with state bowler Andrew Fekete causing trouble, it was his first game back after being dropped down a level, and it was his second triple figures score in a row. These factors - combined with a resolute 83 to keeper Devin Pollock gave the Swans a momentum that never shifted and translated into the second day. The home side couldn't wrestle up enough boundaries to put the pressure on, and were blown away early, with Jackson Fry (2/21), Nathan Lambden (1/52) and James Maxwell (1/29) setting the tone with the new ball. Emerging quicks Maxwell and Fry took their opportunities with Josh Dowling and Dylan Hadfield out injured, combining to capture the wickets of James Rosewarne, Oliver Gunning and Lewis McManus early, before the run out of Shubham Bhargave had the home side hanging meekly at 4/49. There's pressure on my spot now, Josh Dowling is going to come back in, and James Maxwell is back after a year off and is a much better player." Ahead of a blockbuster against local rivals, Dandenong, on Saturday and Sunday, Fry said the Swans were well placed to give the reigning premiers a shake. "We know how good they are, and it's a great challenge against a local rival at home. They're coming off a premiership, so we're really looking forward to it," he said. "Our performances against Fitzroy-Doncaster and Camberwell were top notch, and we believe when we play our best cricket, we can take it up to them. CARDINIA WATERS With no pennant bowls on Tuesday due to the Melbourne Cup, it was left to the Saturday sides to fly the flag for the Cardinia Waters bowlers and they had two big wins. The Division 4 side went to the Cranbourne RSL Rec and won 92-66. Skipper Jim Smith with Simon Koning (L), Gunter Baumbach (S) and John Van Vugt (T) got away to an early lead and apart from a lapse in the middle section, finished well and won 27-13. Phil Wynd Skipped for Brian Byrne, Steve Hale, and Ashley Graham and they allowed the home side to win only seven ends in a 24-14 win. Bryan Stevens with Donny Gibson, Len Judge, and Marion Stevens, lost the first end but were untroubled from thereon to win 25-17. Bill Hite skipped for Dennis Patmore, Mick Knight and Kay Hale and trailed 12-4 after nine ends and although they won the run home they couldn’t catch up, losing 21-16. The Division 7 side was at home to Carrum and had a percentage lifting win, 131-51, with all rinks up. Skipper John Hutchinson with Bill Tippelt, Pat Hutchinson and Graeme Taylor dominated all day. They scored fours and fives and lost only six ends in a 35-11 win. John Bacon with Ric Smart, Ian Smith, and Micki Horton also lost only six ends and scored a six and two fives in a 37-8 win. Stuart Tokely skipped for Fiona Samson, Doug Eastick and Gary Salomons and dominated all day to win 31-13. John Carr, with Marie Stephenson, Del Dance and Dennis Smith had a close one - they were down 19-18 on the 18th end, but scored 10 shots from then on to win, 28-19. The side is sitting atop the ladder with points up and a good percentage. There are no games this week because of the State Titles.

PAKENHAM BOWLS After a wonderful win against the high-flying Heathmont in the previous round, Pakenham One (Division 1) came back to earth with a thud at Ferntree Gully on Saturday. The signs were encouraging early in the game and by the halfway mark the Lions had two rinks up and one level, while holding the slimmest of leads a single shot. Then disaster struck. The afternoon tea provided by Ferntree Gully was delicious but it apparently had the effect of causing some of the Pakenham players to forget their sense of purpose as they dropped off to sleep in the second half and were overcome by their more determined opponents. They lost the game 87-59. All of the gains of the previous week disappeared and they dropped back to eighth on the ladder. They must regroup at home next round against Ringwood on 24 November. Please note that to avoid any clashes with the Victorian Open, which is being played from 16-23 November, pennant won’t be played on Saturday 17 November or Tuesday 20 November. In marked contrast to the efforts of the more senior side, Pakenham Two (Division 2) set about the demolition of their visitors from Mulgrave Country Club from the outset. By the time the game reached the halfway mark, they had all rinks up and had established a 31 shot lead. They went on to win by 52 shots, 106-54, and bank maximum pennant points. It has been a long time since a Pakenham side has inflicted such an overwhelming defeat on a team from the usually strong Mulgrave Country Club. Best rink with a 28-7 score card was Keith Lewis (S), Glenn Bainbridge (3), Wally Noy (2) and Val Moore (L) and the team is now fourth. They will look to carry their winning momentum forward into round seven, where they face Keysborough (second). Pakenham Three (Division 3) was set an extremely difficult task this season - five of the teams in their section are the number one side from their opposing clubs and three are the number two. It’s not all that surprising therefore that they find themselves on the bottom of the ladder. Nevertheless, they did a remarkable job on Saturday in almost pulling off an away win against Keysborough. They were behind by 19 shots at the halfway mark but clawed their way back into the game and eventually went down by just six shots, 77-71, and with three winning rinks collected six pennant points. Best rink with a score of 21-13 was Terry O’Toole (S), Roger Till (3), Kevin Goonan (2) and Ron Hawkins (L). They will be at home to Chelsea One (fifth) next round. Pakenham Four (Division 6) had a nailbiter at Bentleigh. Neither team seemed able to take the early ascendency but as the game progressed, the tide seemed to be going with the home side. By the halfway mark, the Lions were down overall by seven shots and had only one rink in front. What caused the greatest concern however was that one of Pakenham’s rinks was trailing 19-8. In a remarkable second half turn around, the rink that was struggling, outscored their opponents by 11-4 and all the others dug deep to see Pakenham pull off a great two shot win, 72-70, with one rink up and one drawn. Best rink with a score of 21-11 was Jan Moore (S), Josie Mazzarella (3), Gian Pianezzola (2) and Alan Wilcock (L) - Jan’s crew seems to have a mortgage on the title of best rink. The win pushed them up into fourth spot on the ladder with only six points covering the top four. They have a bye in round seven. Unfortunately, with the bye having been created by the withdrawal of a team part way into the season, zero points are awarded for a bye so the fours may lose fourth spot. There were early indications that the ‘Bowls Gods’ were not going to favour Pakenham Five (Division 7) in their home game against Monbulk last Saturday and at the halfway point they had one rink level and three down for an overall deficit of 16 shots. From that point forward they matched their opponents, eventually going down by the same margin of 16 shots, 96-80. Best rink, with a 20-20 draw, was Lindsay Stevenson (S), Peter Powney (3), Gail Wilcock (2) and Judith Ferrari (L).
