$38.3m road plan The final two-lane section of Narre Warren North Road could be duplicated which will enable drivers to get home sooner and safer.

A re-elected Labor Government will invest $38.3 million to widen the 750 metre stretch of road from Fox Road to Belgrave-Hallam Road, doubling the two lanes to four.

Narre Warren North Road between Ernst

Wanke Road and Fox Road has already been duplicated and the section between the Belgrave-Hallam Road intersection and Heatherton Road is in currently being duplicated.

Intersections will be upgraded at Heatherton Road and Ernst Wanke Road, and traffic lights will be installed at the Memorial Drive and Crawly Road intersection.

The road will be safer for local pedestrians and cyclists, with the upgrade to include a new

shared path with a safety barrier, as well as new street lighting, road signage and landscaping.

Planning and pre-construction work will start in 2019, with major works starting in 2020.

"Anyone who uses Narre Warren North Road will know how badly this duplication is needed," member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said.

"This will make a real difference to local families."

How long have you been with St John's Anglican church and what have been some of your goals with the community?

I will have been at St John's for ten years just before Christmas this year, but plan to finish in the middle of next year, when I shall be 65.

One of my goals has been to build St John's in terms of attendances and in terms of its crosscultural diversity, and this has been wonderfully achieved.

Take care of your friends Stop your friends from getting into fights. Walk away from dangerous or conflict situations and take your friends with you. Don't leave friends alone with somebody they've just met. Recognise when a friend has had too much to drink.

Never leave someone who is drunk or passed out - get them immediate medical help.

This would be the Christmas services in 2013, when we used our wonderful new church and education centre facilities for the first time.

What is something people don't know about you?

I can wiggle my ears.

If you were PM for a day, what would you do?

Be very sorry for myself, ask everyone to pray hard, and do what I thought was right rather than what the polls told me would get me reelected.

ED upgrade for families

Ten youths arrested Ten young people have been arrested over a series of alleged armed robberies and car-jackings in the South East.

The incidents occurred between 29 October and 5 November - including a Halloween spree that started with a reported egging in Hampton Park. The spree allegedly spread to South Yarra, Balaclava, Cheltenham, St Kilda and Patterson Lakes.

Southern Metro Region Crime Team police conducted 11 raids at addresses in Narre Warren, Narre Warren South, Cranbourne North, Hampton Park and Elwood.

A 17-year-old Narre Warren South boy was charged with aggravated carjacking, aggravated burglary and theft of motor vehicle as well as other offences. A 16-year-old Elwood boy was charged with multiple counts of aggravated burglary, aggravated carjacking, robbery and theft of motor vehicle.

Both were remanded to appear at children's court.

A 22-year-old Narre Warren man was charged with conduct endangering life, aggravated burglary, robbery and theft of motor vehicle. He was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates'

A male is arrested during the police raids in the South East.

A 17-year-old Hampton Park girl was charged with robbery and bailed to appear at a children's court. Six males, aged between 14 and 23, were

released pending summons. Casey CIU, Dandenong divisional response unit, Eastern Region Crime Team and Echo Taskforce assisted in the arrests.

Crafting a top brew

A new emergency department devoted to children and their families will be built at Casey Hospital, a re-elected Labor Government has promised.

The $62.4 million investment will reconfigure or expand existing emergency departments.

The new department will give parents peace of mind that their children will get calm, compassionate and dedicated care when they need it most.

"With a new dedicated emergency department, local families will have peace of mind that should the worst happen, their kids will be in the very best hands," Member for Narre Warren North Luke Donnellan said.

Labor is already delivering a $135 million redevelopment of Casey Hospital, featuring 128 new multi-day beds, 12 intensive care bed units, 12 day surgical beds and six new operating theatres.

It will mean Casey Hospital can treat more than 25,000 extra patients.

"Labor is already developing Casey Hospital - but because there's nothing more important than the health of our kids, we'll deliver a new dedicated ED for local families," Labor candidate for Narre Warren South Gary Maas said.

Revamp for St Kevin’s

"Security personnel will be in full force so you can also expect to be within a safe environment and remember that coming along to the Beef and Beer Fest benefits the families and children of the local community that are members of the Narre Warren Cricket Club."

Liberals will invest $1.4 million to upgrade the school.

"In one of the fastest growing areas of Casey, students from St Kevin's Primary School will greatly benefit from modern and contemporary facilities," Liberal candidate for Narre Warren South Susan Serey said.

"St Kevin's is a wonderful school and this upgrade will help students achieve great educational outcomes."

Shadow Minister for Education Tim Smith said the Liberals want to work with non-government schools to give Victorian families choice in education.

"I am delighted to be able to announce this $1.4 million investment in St Kevin's Primary School, Hampton Park as part of our $400 million commitment to non-government schools," he said.

A brand new sporting oval could be constructed for Berwick Chase Primary School and the local community in the near future.

Labor will invest $1.4 million towards the construction of an oval, cricket practice nets, pavilion, floodlighting, car parking and landscaping.

"A re-elected Labor Government will make sure our community has the sporting facilities it needs," Labor candidate for Narre Warren

South Gary Maas said.

"Whether its hospitals, schools, upgraded roads or new sporting facilities, only Labor can be trusted to deliver for local families."

Minister for Education James Merlino said that community sport is all about bringing people together.

"This will not only give the local community the facilities it needs, but give more outdoor sporting space for the nearby Berwick Chase Primary School," Mr Merlino said.

A re-elected Labor Government will make sure every new Victorian primary school comes complete with a kindergarten.

Labor will invest almost $5 billion over the next decade to deliver a full 15 hours of threeyear-old kinder, making sure about a quarter of Victorian families pay nothing at all and 65 per cent of the costs for families on higher incomes will be covered.

They will also add kindergartens to new schools under construction and slated for completion in 2019 or 2020 where possible.

In 2022, kindergartens will be built at Clyde North.

Former Prime Minister John Howard received a hero's welcome as he walked through Westfield Fountain Gate Shopping Centre in Narre Warren on Friday 9 November.

Shoppers were left star struck as hundreds of people gathered around Mr Howard who joined Opposition Leader Matthew Guy in helping him with his campaign ahead of this month's state election.

Mr Guy held his wife Renae's hand as he toured the shopping centre with Mr Howard, flanked by the Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North Vikki Fitzgerald, Liberal candidate for Narre Warren South Susan Serey, and the Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann-Marie Hermans.

Dressed in a pinstripe navy blue suit, and a navy and white tie, complete with a poppy on his jacket, Mr Howard was beaming with a smile, as he spent about 30 minutes wandering through the shopping centre, taking selfies and shaking hands with everyone from to shoppers, bystanders and staff - leaving a smile on many faces.

"The Liberal Party and Labor Party are equally responsible, and the Greens," he shouted. "They're completing ignoring the separation distance."

Mr Howard gave praise to My Guy's campaign, saying he was "going very well."

"I think Matthew's campaign has been very well judged. He's focused on issues that are of relevance to the average Victorian family, cost of living issues and certainly the feelings of concern about the level of crime," he said.

Mr Howard said there's "no doubt around the country there is a view" that Victoria had "real challenges" with crime.

With the election polls favouring Labor for a win, Mr Howard said: "I've seen polls being defied before, happens a lot."

Free to ask Casey councillor, Sam Aziz, might prefer to claim that The Sunday Age's recent story on Casey councillors and developers is untrue.

But if that is the case, why does Casey Council refuse to allow ratepayers to ask questions about these and other issues at public question time?

Why does Casey Council have some of its staff (who are paid by ratepayers) engaged in censoring what questions are acceptable to council and what questions will not be accepted or answered by councillors or its officers during public question time? What does Casey Council have to hide? Is it really appropriate that Casey Council should use our money in this way? Why is it that some councils allow ratepayers to ask their own questions,except Casey Council?

Casey council's use of censorship to stop residents from asking "controversial" questions can only be seen as being very disrespectful.

It rests on a very narrow concept of democracy and transparency.

At the end of the day, it also raises more questions about the standard of leadership from both council and from the Andrews Government. Because neither Luke Donnellan, or Judith Graley, both local Labor MPs, have done a thing to empower Casey ratepayers, by demanding changes to Casey's "censored" public question time.

Don't councils exist to serve the interests of their local communities?

Well Casey Council has a "censored" public question time which I believe is more appropriate for serving the interests of someone like Kim Jong-un in North Korea!

The $40.7 million for FedUni is the largest amount allocated to any of the five regional universities receiving funding support.

The Federal Government has also announced nearly 2000 new scholarships for students from regional and remote areas over four years.

The beautiful gardens of the Narre Warren North Uniting Church were transformed into a Fossil Park on Saturday, 10 November.

To the sounds of dinosaurs roaring in the background almost 100 young children and adults met creator Phil Martin also known as 'Fossil Phil' and his 10 colourful handmade dinosaurs.

"One of the favourite activities of the day was the digging for fossils, and it was so much fun watching the children's faces light up with excitement when they dug deep into the sand and lifted up one of the fossils they had found," Mr Martin said.

"Some of the children even came prepared with their little buckets and spades."

More than 100 women dressed to impress at the Cranbourne Turd Club.

Over 100 women attended the luncheon to raise funds for the Inner Wheel Australia Foundation Trust which supports research into the users of stem cells found in both cord and placental blood.

"To date Inner Wheel Australia has awarded grants totalling just on $2.8 million for this vital research," Inner Wheel Club of Berwick's Kay Morland said.

"A portion of the funds from this year's luncheon will also be used to support local charities."

The Fashions on the Field competition was a hit, with winners including Annette Celer as Most Elegant Lady, Trish Tabak for Haute Couture Headwear and Colleen Wright for the 2018 Fabulous Filly.

"The highlights of the event are undoubtedly the Fashions on the Field and of course the races themselves which, thanks to the Cranbourne Turf Club we enjoyed on the big screen from the comfort of our lunch tables," Ms Morland said.

"There is no better venue for a race day themed event than a race track and the Cranbourne Turf Club is the perfect venue, the room was filled with an excited buzz all day. "'Girls just wanna have fun' and what better way to do it than to frock up, pop on a hat and enjoy a day 'at the races' while raising money for a good cause."

Diwali fest a spectacle 12404063-SN45-18

Bunjil Place Plaza was thriving with excitement and activity on Sunday, 11 November as up to 12,000 people attended the Diwali Festival.

An Ancient Hindu tradition commemorates Diwali as the return of Lord Rama, his wife Sita and brother Lakshman's to Ayodhya, ending a fourteen-year long exile.

To celebrate the return of Lord Rama, the people of Ayodhya lit the entire kingdom with earthen diyas (oil lamps) to show them the way home. Due to this, Diwali is referred to as the festival of lights.

The entertainment on the day was endless, with Jana Garjana Dhol Pathak a major highlight of the event, a loud and lively drumming group who got everyone moving to the beat.

There was also a Bhangra dance and workshop, which was a hit with guests!

The nine hours of non-stop entertainment also included live bands, solo singers, cuisines from around India, face painters, henna tattoos and a photo booth.

The response from the public was extremely positive, with the community impressed to see a variety of activities available on the day and plenty of performances to keep the fun going.

Around 180 St Margaret’s School walked to the cenotaph in High Street, Berwick, on Friday to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice which ended World War I.

In remembrance Around 180 St Margaret's School, Berwick girls from Year 7 to 9 with their accompanying teachers walked to Cenotaph in High Street, Berwick to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice which ended the First World War on Friday.

Mr Mark Easton, senior humanities teacher, addressed the students with the meaning behind this Remembrance Day.

He explained that this Sunday it will be 100 years to the day that the First World War ended.

Mr Easton said it is important to remember that behind every one of the numbers is a personal story, a single soldier with a family, with a life and with hopes and dreams.

The college recognised Berwick soldier Fred Sibert.

Fred was born in Berwick in 1895. His parents moved to Perth when Fred was a boy and

as a young man Fred worked in Queensland as a timber cutter.

He enlisted to join the Australian Army in October, 1916, and on 22 of September, 1917 he joined the front line near the Belgian city of Ypres.

During heavy fighting on the 10 October he was hit in the stomach by shell fragments and died before he could reach the dressing station. His time in combat had lasted for 19 days.

Moving to Sanctuary Lifestyle at Drouin has been a family affair for Kevin Smith and Geoff Crouch.

The pair are mates but also brothers-in-law.

“We didn’t know anybody when we came here but we’ve met lots of people. It’s been wonderful,“ Shirley said.

Chairman of the residents’ committee Leigh Drew encouraged others to join the Sanctuary Lifestyle community.

He said moving to Drouin had given himself and his wife “a new lease on life“.

Team MO'Brien is set to take on Movember.

MOVEMBER is here and so is team MO’Brien. Back for their third year participating in Movember, O’Brien’s Real Estate is working to shed light on a range of men’s health issues.

O’Brien General Manager (corporate office) Jason Mudford explained that the team’s engagement with the mo-growing fundraiser stems from the belief that there are far too many men dying too young.

This year, team MO’Brien is taking action by raising funds for mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

“We’ve done Movember for the last three years and last year we rose over $5, 000,” Jason said.

“It’s a great initiative. We have over 100 donation tins and we like to think we’ll have at least 50 staff members growing a mo. Others are choosing to support the cause in different ways.”

Team MOBrien are aiming to double last year’s total by raising $10,000 and are asking people to get behind the team by either ‘growing, donating or supporting.’

“We ask that anyone (not only men) capable of growing a moustache (or not capable as some may be) go without the shaver for the entire month of November,” Office Manager and Auctioneer (Mentone office) and organiser of the MOBrien’s Greg Brydon said.

“Throughout the month, the MO-Bros will be sporting some seriously bad facial hair. We ask that you get behind the cause and support in any way you can.”

Dr Kunal Nagaich of Lynbrook Vet said that the new clinic will offer compassionate care in a new, custom-built veterinary practice which will be open between 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays.

"We will be offering a comprehensive range of veterinary services for you and your pet including consultations, vaccinations, de-sexing, microchipping, general and orthopaedic surgery, internal medicine, radiography and ultrasonography, pathology and dentistry," Dr Nagaich said.

"We are passionate about and well versed in

greyhound medicine and surgery and can offer a specialised service for your couch potato."

Lynbrook Vet has been designed to minimise stress to all patients with separate dog and cat wards, a dedicated cat waiting area and calming, spacious consult rooms.

"We are driven by our values of compassion, trust, respect and professionalism as we care for you and your pets," Dr Nagaich said.

Lynbrook Vet also runs puppy preschool classes and offer detailed advice on caring for a new puppy or kitten.

The team is also available for school or childcare talks and love being able to share their passion for animals with children.

"Caring for the injured and sick wildlife in our community is important to us and we support local wildlife carers in this task," Dr Nagaich said.

Living and delivering locally

By Jessica Anstice Vikki Fitzgerald is the nominated Liberal candidate for Narre Warren North.

Ms Fitzgerald's motivation is delivering locally, as she has lived locally for the last 18 years.

"When people here tell me about how long their daily commute is, or share their concerns about rising crime in the neighbourhood, I understand because I see it every day as well," she said.

"People around here are telling me that their daily commute is a nightmare, that they're getting squeezed by cost of living and that they worry that crime is out of control."

Ms Fitzgerald said she hears concerns about crime a lot.

"Jail will mean jail, we'll get violent thugs off our streets and roll out CCTV at Spring Square in Hallam and Webb Street/Narre Warren Sta-

tion," Ms Fitzgerald said.

Ms Fitzgerald focuses largely on education.

"As part of a Liberal Government I'll deliver two school buses and a STEM Centre fit out to Fountain Gate Secondary College, and we will build a much needed VCE Centre for Gleneagles Secondary, Timbarra P-9 will receive a STEM Centre, and St Paul the Apostle South Primary will receive much needed building upgrades," she said.

"A Liberal Government will make textbooks free for secondary school students, an instant saving for many families."

If elected, Ms Fitzgerald promises O'Shea Road to be duplicated, the intersection at Heatherton and Hallam Road upgraded, and both East West Link and North East Link built.

Ms Fitzgerald said that if she is elected, her first point of business will be to hit the ground running and deliver the relief they have promised for the community.

Candidate pledge for jobs

By Jessica Anstice Gary Maas is the nominated Labor candidate for Narre Warren South in the lead up to the state election on Saturday 24 November.

Mr Maas has pledged to focus on three pillars, including secure jobs, secure communities and a secure future.

"My campaign has all along been those three things. I believe with those three pillars all the other issues that our community faces are within that," he said.

"If we keep announcing big public infrastructure projects, work will be provided.

"It provides work for the construction industry. It's not only the people who build but you get engineers involved, architects involved, you've got all the people that support those businesses involved and that gives con32 STAR NEWS

fidence to a community."

According to Mr Mass, within secure communities is reinvestment in TAFE, training and schools.

"The previous government slashed funding in all those areas," Mr Maas said.

"Labor is investing very heavily in that because it believes that when people are kept busy and active then the chances for crime occurring is less.

"As much as there's probably some value as putting cameras in shopping centres, we'd much rather our children being able to contribute properly to a functioning society."

If elected, within the first 100 days, Mr Maas will organise a community forum at a big town hall where people will be able to help develop a plan for what they would like to see in Narre Warren South over the next four years.

Narre seats up for grabs Narre Warren North District covers 57 square kilometres and it made up of suburbs including Hallam, Narre Warren and Narre Warren North and parts of Berwick, Endeavour Hills, and Harkawar.

Narre Warren North is a residential electorate, with development in the east of the District.

Features include the Berwick campus of Monash University and the Fountain Gate shopping centre. Natural features include Lysterfield Park and Lysterfield Lake.

Luke Donnellan is the current Member for Parliament for Narre Warren North. He was elected in 2002. Mr Donnellan is the Minister for Roads and Road Safety and the Minister for Ports.

Narre Warren North was contested in 2002

by Liberal MLC Maree Luckins, but she was defeated as a 15 percent swing elected Labor's Mr Donnellan as the first member for Narre Warren North.

There are five candidates running in this year's election, in the previous election, 2014, there were seven, and in 2006, there were five.

Narre Warren North appeared to have a narrow Liberal majority on its creation, but it has sat on the Labor side of the state's electoral ledger since its first contest at the 2002 election.

Sami Greiss, Zeeshan Mahmood and Stefanie Bauer were contacted for comments but did not respond in time.

Labour DLP candidate Mr Greiss holds a

Bachelor of Commerce and is self-employed while his wife works for Monash University.

Transport Matters Party candidate Zeeshan Mahmood is a 36-year-old businessman and property developer who has volunteered for many years with the Australian Red Cross. He was born in Pakistan and lives in Narre Warren.

Australian Greens candidate Stefanie Bauer has worked in the aged and disability community for more than 20 years, working with council and not for profit agencies.

Narre Warren South covers 39.3 square kilometres of new housing estates south of the Princed Highway around Berwick. It includes suburbs of Hampton Park, Narre Warren South and parts of Lynbrook and Berwick. Narre Warren South was a marginal Liberal seat on its creation but was won by Labor's Dale Wilson with a swing of 14 percent at the 2002 election.

In the 2012 state election, there were five candidates. This year, there are four candidates.

Incumbent, Labor's Judith Graley is retiring and new Labor candidate Gary Maas hopes for a smooth transition into the seat.

Liberal's Susan Serey was a candidate in the previous election and remains a candidate in the current election. Ms Serey was 40.51 percent of first preference votes in 2014, but it was won by Ms Graley with a swing of 48.18 percent.

Australian Greens candidate Michael Butler was contacted for comments but did not respond in time.

Fenix Chorale Inc.is a choir consisting of thirty plus sings beautiful four part harmonies to a variety of popular songs and performs several times during the year at local retirement villages and other venues. The choir was formed in September 2016 and holds rehearsals in the Auditorium at Woodlands Park, 72 Kangan Drive, Berwick on the first, second and third Wednesdays of the month, except the Christmas Holidays, 2.30 - 3.45pm. Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds.

They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a midyear break, lessons for their learners continue.

The principal terms of the land exchange agreement are as follows: 1. The Land Exchange is to facilitate the delivery of the Berwick Waterways Precinct Structure and Development Contributions Plan (Structure Plan).

2. The Structure Plan requires the existing road to be deviated pursuant to a road deviation proposal by discontinuing that part of the existing road, being Lot A, and creating a new road through the Adjoining Land, being Lot B (Road Deviation Proposal).

3. Settlement of the Land Exchange is to be effected 28 days after the Road Deviation Proposal is published in the Victorian Government Gazette, or such longer period as agreed in writing by the parties.

4. At the date of this Proposal, the market value of each lot is as follows: 4.1 Lot A - $330,000 plus GST; and 4.2 Lot B - $335,000 plus GST. 5. Despite the value of Lot B being greater than Lot A, Council is not required to pay the Adjoining Owner (and the Adjoining Owner is not entitled to demand) any consideration (except GST payable) at settlement.

Wilcock’s back at Dandy

By Nick Creely Dandenong quick James Wilcock admits that if he hadn't stepped away from the intense rigours of Premier Cricket for a couple of years, he may have given it away completely.

With 136 first XI wickets for the Panthers after debuting at just 16 in the 2008/09 season, the now 26-year-old is a relative veteran of Premier Cricket, but chose to step away and return to his home club, Berwick, after snaring 27 wickets in 2015/16 for one simple reason.

"I was burnt out of cricket, really - playing Premier Cricket takes some time out of your life, and I played various junior tournaments and went to England for three years when I was young, and I got sick of it," he said.

"It was either to quit cricket, or go play with my mates down at Berwick for a few years - I just had to go back to local cricket."

Clearly above the Dandenong District's Turf 1 grade, netting 59 wickets at 13.35 in two seasons down at Berwick, Wilcock made the choice to return to Shepley Oval after the Panthers' stunning premierships last year.

"I had a pretty good season at Berwick, and got myself really fit, and I thought I'd give it another crack," he said.

"I absolutely loved it, off-field and on-field - with the team we had, it was probably disappointing to not even make the finals, but it is what I needed."

Through injuries and availability, the former Victorian Under 17 and Under 19 representative has been thrust straight back into the thick of the action, taking the new ball for the Panthers to lead the attack, and described the "cut-throat" nature of Premier Cricket, something he is once again thriving off.

"It's been pretty smooth (coming back to

Dandenong), it does help that most of the guys around Dandenong are virtually the same, so that does help quite a lot," he said.

"It's a different level of cricket, so it's taken a bit of time on the cricket side of it - it's just that bit better and getting use to bowling to better batsmen.

"If you miss a training session or two, you feel a bit guilty, because there is guys in the twos that want to take your place - even me, you feel like you've been going well and guys like Peter Siddle and James Pattinson come back in and you quickly find yourself in the twos.

"It is quite cut-throat, you always have to be on your game - you're always on your toes."

Wilcock has started to find his groove, snaring 5/28 in a brilliant effort against Northcote, and also took 3/45 against Essendon the week prior.

"I love it (leading the bowling attack) - it's not something I really expected, but those injuries have given me a bit of opportunity, and I just have to make the most of it," he said.

"I've taken some good wickets at the start of the year, and I've got to make the most of it."

And as for the reigning premiers - who are moving along steadily in their premiership defence - Wilcock said that things are bound to click very soon.

"That's why you play sport, to win - they won last year, but it's always harder to back it up - we've started the season alright, and there are probably a few things we could fix, but it's enjoyable," he said.

"We're confident, and not too worried at the moment - we've shown great patches in games, whether with the bat, with the ball, or in the field, so it's now just putting it all together, and that's not too far away."

Local stars set for nationals

By Hayley Wildes Two Berwick Primary School students are set to take on the rest of Australia later this month.

Brodie Atcheson and Josiah Stanford, who are in Grade 5 and Grade 4 respectively, have been selected to the Victoria track and field state team and will compete in the School Sport Australia Championships from 23 to 27 November at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park.

Both are Berwick Little Athletics members and will be hoping to make some noise on the national stage against students from the ACT, New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Tasmania.

Brodie will be competing in the 800m event, while Josiah will be going for gold in two events; the long jump and medley relay.

Making the Victorian team is a tough task and after an extensive selection process that 40 STAR NEWS

began in April, Brodie and Josiah were selected to the final team of 140 students last month.

The process saw them compete at school, district, division, regional, and then finally state level in order to get the national call-up.

Brodie enters the 800m event having come third in the state championships, with a personal best of two minutes and 25 seconds. Josiah will take on the field in long jump with a personal best of 4.39 metres, as well as taking his place in the medley relay team, of which he will run the 100m leg of the race.

Both boys thoroughly enjoy little athletics and train up to five days a week, which will absolutely hold them in good stead for the national championships.

There's no doubt that Brodie Atcheson and Josiah Stanford are on the rise and with a love for the sport and competition, the rest of Australia had better watch out.

Adrian wants to get rolling

By Hayley Wildes The Narre South Cricket Club has been a staple of the local community for many years and there's one man in particular who lives and breathes Narre South.

Adrian Hopkins has been involved with the Lions for five years and despite personal pain, has found comfort within the four walls of the club.

Back in February 2016, Adrian - who was coaching the under-13s team at the time - suffered a horrific accident when he slipped in the cricket nets; badly breaking his leg and as a result, was left with paralysis in that leg.

Throughout a long and tough rehabilitation process, Adrian - who can no longer work - stayed involved with the club and has remained junior coordinator, among many other roles.

"I've had some tough times with the rehab - I didn't walk for the first year because I've got permanent nerve damage and it's paralysed; that was pretty tough," Adrian said.

"All I had essentially besides my family and friends was the club.

"Over the last couple of years I've been able to use it like a full-time job. People see I'm doing a lot, but I use this as my job and it keeps me going and gets me out of bed every day.

"People say I do a lot for the club, but they don't realise that the club has done a lot for me, more than they can probably understand."

In his role as the junior coordinator, Adrian oversees the flourishing Narre South junior programs. On top of six senior teams, the club has over 130 under-11s to under-16s, a further 60 kids registered in early-entry programs and the Lions were also the first DDCA club to have an all-girls program, which is now in its third season.

"We're very inclusive and even when we have things like a sausage sizzle, we make sure

"When there are holidays that other cultures celebrate, we make sure that they're communicated to the teams.

"I think it just allows the kids to grow as people. We always talk with the coaches that we're not just teaching them cricket, we're giving them other life lessons along the way."

Despite his countless roles within the club, Adrian wants to do more. Due to his injury, he is unable to help in the preparation of the turf wicket at Strathaird Reserve.

The club currently uses a walk behind roller, which isn't suitable for Adrian as he can't walk or stand for long periods of time or manually manoeuvre a pitch roller.

To enable Adrian to roll the wickets, a rideon pitch roller is required.

"We're volunteer-based and it's hard with a lot of people working and many families now have both parents working full time," Adrian said.

"It would be huge for me to be able to sit on the roller and get that done during the day. It takes a minimum of three hours of work each day, most weeks it will get a roll six days a week

and that's the bare minimum, you've got to do the extra stuff on top of that.

"I can't stand out there and manoeuvre the walk-behind roller, but a ride-on has got power steering and steering control. It would just make life a lot easier for our club for sure."

Despite the club's best efforts, grants have not been forthcoming and the club is seeking community support.

Casey Basketball continues to go from strength to strength and with the recent selection announcements for the Basketball Victoria Elite Development programs and teams, that point has been proven once again.

A number of Casey players and coaches have been selected to take part in the elite pathway. Cavs players Blake Shankland, Mason Heather, Ryan Van Gent, Dylan Bucknell and Corey Roos have been selected to the State Development Program (SDP), while coaches Darren Best (lead coach), Mitch Taylor (assistant coach) and Brad White (assistant coach) are also involved.

In further exciting news for the association, a number of Cavaliers have been selected to represent Victoria Metro at the Southern Cross Challenge (SCC).

The SCC is the beginning of the high-performance pathway that provides identified elite juniors, coaches and officials an insight into elite development and gameplay across a four-day tournament.

Casey representatives are; Archer McMenamin and Dakota Crichton (under 15s), Cedric Rault, Keighan Cormick-Cox, Sebastian Van Den Brink and Truman Byrne (under 14s), and coaches Darren Best and Ishoa Cook.

Darren Best, Casey Basketball development manager, talked about the talent coming through the ranks at Casey.

"It's a credit to the kids - they put the work in," Best said.

"The association obviously supports them, but I think basketball is definitely player focussed.

"The athletes are the ones who have done the work and obviously we support them as best we can.

"I think any time you're in a growth corridor as large as we are, you're always going to have a massive number of kids coming through the door and you're going to find some very talented kids just by the sheer volume."

Best, who grew up playing basketball at Cranbourne, returned to Casey in August after spending time with Basketball Tasmania as a high-performance coach.

He will take charge of the under 15 Victoria Metro team at the SCC in January.

Heading up the Casey Basketball Academy, Best has been working closely with the most promising juniors in the association.

"Of all the Casey kids that made the SCC, all bar two are in our academy programs," he said.

"We do an extra practice a week with those kids and we base that curriculum around not only how we want to play as an association, but what would be expected of them if they were to go to a state trial."

The Casey Basketball Academy is open to all representative players at Casey Basketball.

Tons of fun for Spoljaric

By Nick Creely DDCA TURF 1 AND 2 REVIEW - ROUND 4 (DAY 1) Crafting a century takes skill, application, as well as physical and mental fitness.

Yet DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric, the five time Wookey medalist and Ryder medal winner makes them look so easy, as if he hasn't even broken a sweat.

His 18th in the association (122) in just 97 games came on Saturday for Springvale South in Round 4 of the Turf 1 season, against a highly quality Hallam Kalora Park bowling group, helping set up an imposing 312 for the Hawks at Frawley Road.

It was very much a classic Spoljaric knock - pushing singles early, being patient and then accelerating like no other player in the competition.

After Michael Vandort was trapped LBW in the opening exchanges after some quality new ball bowling by Jordan Hammond, Spoljaric strode to the middle with his usual calmness.

As he normally does, aggressive opener Nathan King (39) took to the bowlers, allowing Spoljaric to work his way into the innings superbly.

A double strike by Steven Gilmour (2/19) had the Bloods reeling at 3/61, but Spoljaric continued to play his way, constructing partnerships with Tim Ford (16) and Malinga Bandara (52) before going on and reaching the three figures in aggressive fashion.

Ironically, Spoljaric was run out on 122. In reality, it was the only way to nab his prized scalp.

Down at Park Oval, Buckley Ridges flexed their muscles and inflicted North Dandenong with misery, wrapping up first innings points as they now eye an outright.

Winning the toss and batting proved to be the fateful call for skipper Asfan Thajudeen, with the Maroons succumbing to the new ball skill by Jurgen Andersen (5/29) and Daniel Watson (3/15), with the visitors rolled for just 51.

Mammoth centuries, meanwhile, to a Narre South newcomer and Dingley star headlined an action packed day across Turf 2 on Saturday.

Down at Sweeney Reserve, with Narre Warren taking on the Lions, Jonty Jenner - the 20-year-old Jersey star who has played a recent first-class game with Sussex - put on an absolute clinic, sending the ball to all parts of the ground in a dynamic 146.

Jenner's innings took just 122 balls and just under three hours, hitting 17 fours and six sixes - including a range of stunning reverse sweep sixes.

Morteza Ali (66) and Joe Thomas (26) put on 88 for the first wicket, and the Magpies simply couldn't keep up, with Ashan Wijayakumara

(58) playing a strong hand in a partnership of almost 200 with Jenner.

The Magpies showed some fight - particularly through the efforts of Janaka Liyanabadalge (4/75) and Callum Spencer (3/66) - to stem the bleeding somewhat, but Scott Phillips' side reached 9/350 before declaring with eight overs to spare.

Opening batsman Bevan Radhakrishnan fell just one ball before stumps, with the Magpies 1/9 at the end of the day, and will need to do a lot right to get close to their target when play resumes on Saturday.

Gun Dingley all-rounder Matthew Hague, meanwhile, also had a day out with the blade against St Brigid's/St Louis.

Hague carved up the home side in a breathtaking 179 off 224 balls, guiding the Dingoes to a strong 9/316 at stumps.

Battling to find form after 65 runs in his first four digs, Hague's class and hunger for runs shone brightest, forming strong partnerships throughout the innings.

Hague sent the ball flying over the ropes for eight sixes and 18 fours, returning to the trademark form that saw him amass 507 Turf 1 runs two years ago. Luke Spears (37) was also in the runs for the Dingoes.

And Narre North is in a strong position against Parkmore Pirates at Frederick Wachter Reserve.

The Pirates were sent in to face the music, and lost a bunch of early wickets to be in some trouble early.

Captain-coach Anurudhdha Foneska (61) was the only Pirate to get some momentum with the bat, playing a virtual lone hand in the middle order to salvage something against the reigning Turf 2 premiers, helping guide the side to 135, but in only 35 overs.

Ryan Hendy (3/39), Joel Zietsman (2/39), Nathan Wilson (2/11) and Josh Henry (2/26) were all in the wickets for the Rams, as they build on what has been a slowish start to their title defence.

The Rams clawed their way to 2/76 at stumps, with Marshall Gray (26) and Kyle Hardy (10) set to resume in the middle on Saturday.

The match between Dandenong West and Cranbourne will be played this Saturday and Sunday.

Swans are building something special

Casey-South Melbourne doesn't want to simply make up the numbers. It wants to be a threat.

After clinically knocking over Camberwell Magpies on Saturday away from home, the new look Swans are sitting just outside the top eight, a terrific start to the season by any measure. They're building something that has previously been lacking.

The Magpies were always on the back foot after a sublime hundred by Michael Wallace (125) on day one saw the visitors set a formidable 330 for victory. Wallace's ton was significant for many reasons. He came in at 3/30 and with state bowler Andrew Fekete causing trouble, it was his first game back after being dropped down a level, and it was his second triple figures score in a row.

These factors - combined with a resolute 83 to keeper Devin Pollock gave the Swans a momentum that never shifted and translated into the second day.

The home side couldn't wrestle up enough boundaries to put the pressure on, and were blown away early, with Jackson Fry (2/21),

Nathan Lambden (1/52) and James Maxwell (1/29) setting the tone with the new ball.

Emerging quicks Maxwell and Fry took their opportunities with Josh Dowling and Dylan Hadfield out injured, combining to capture the wickets of James Rosewarne, Oliver Gunning and Lewis McManus early, before the run out of Shubham Bhargave had the home side hanging meekly at 4/49.

The Magpies were eventually snuffed out for 213, with Jonah Serong (3/43) bouncing back from a tough opening spell to take the final three wickets of the match, including Russ and Will Walker in consecutive balls to help his side to victory.

Fry, who now has 43 first XI games under his belt as he continues to emerge in the bowling ranks, praised the bowling group for putting the Magpies on the back foot early.

"I got a couple early, James Maxwell got one and they were four for not many - we put their two best players, Hill and Russ, under a lot of pressure and then getting Hill out, we knew we were on our way to getting the points, which was good," he said.

Culture has been a major factor in the Swans turning around their fortunes so far

this season, something not lost on Fry who explained that presence of some elite cricket heads has brought about some renewed confidence and fierce competition for spots.

"It's a lot different culture - Nick Jewell's a massive inclusion for the club, what he's brought to the table in terms of philosophies on cricket throughout the pre-season, and guys know where they stand with him, which is massive. And obviously having Luke Wells too is huge," he said.

"Having two first-class guns at the helm is massive. It makes a big difference, we know our game a lot better, and guys walk tall with them around.

"There's massive competition for spots, which is great, because guys train a bit harder - it's good to be around it.

"We didn't have that last year - I probably played ones all last year when I wasn't in any great form. There's pressure on my spot now, Josh Dowling is going to come back in, and James Maxwell is back after a year off and is a much better player."

Ahead of a blockbuster against local rivals, Dandenong, on Saturday and Sunday, Fry said the Swans were well placed to give the reigning

"We know how good they are, and it's a great challenge against a local rival at home.

They're coming off a premiership, so we're really looking forward to it," he said.

"Our performances against Fitzroy-Doncaster and Camberwell were top notch, and we believe when we play our best cricket, we can take it up to them.

"Obviously the opening partnership (of Tom Donnell and Brett Forsyth) is massive, and if we knock a few over early and have a look at a few early on, it's going to be a great game. Hopefully it's a big crowd and attracts a few down to Casey Fields."

A (bad) day on the green It was a bad day for Narre Warren's Saturday Pennant teams with three losing all by less than 10 shots and Division 7 having a bye.

At Noble Park, Division 3 won two rinks and also had a draw. Colin Groom, Percy Herath, Arthur Scheurer and Jim Millar won 21-13; and Joe Selfridge, Brent Hone, Rod Lane and Cam Lee won 15-24. John Wright, Iain Stevenson, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm drew 16-16, but Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson went down 7-23.

Narre Warren (1) 5-59 lost to Noble Park (1) 13-66.

At Berwick, Division 4 only just lost by two shots. Keith Mark, Peter Castricum, Ralph Devonshire and Norm Hosmer won well (25-12) and Jim Kempf, Graham Dodd, Philip Howard and John Zanon won 22-20. Alan Mark, Peter Lister, Mark Groom and Carl Lapham, went down on the last end 18-19 but Wally Finlayson, Wilma Haringsma, David Wilkinson and Geoff Miller went down 11-27.

Narre Warren (2) 4-76 lost to Berwick (5) 14-78.

At Fountain Gate, Division 5 also played Berwick and had a disappointing five-shot loss. Janice Moran, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg won well 25-12, and Arthur Fitt, Denise Peeler, Michael Graham and Stan Robinson won 19-17, but Stan Bulmer, Paul McNamara, Peter Lyons and Geoff Ampt (1624), and Leo McGeary, Pauline Kempf, Sharane Lyons and Craig Moore (10-25) both lost.

Narre Warren (3) 4-71 lost to Berwick (6) 14-76.

Exciting new comp kicks off The inaugural Dandenong District Cricket Association girls competition kicked off in warm conditions at Hampton Park's Reedy Reserve on Tuesday night, with four teams doing battle on a historic evening for female cricket in the region.

Cranbourne’s great streak comes to an end After a great run of three victories in a row, Cranbourne's top bowls side was brought down to Earth on Saturday after a disappointing loss to Keysborough at home by 40 shots.

And the losses continued with both the second and third side losing, however not all is lost as the two remaining sides recorded great wins.

Midweek bowls had a bye last week and will resume again this week.

Side 1 Division 2: It was a case of third side Cranbourne verses second side Keysborough but it was a one-horse race with Cranbourne coming up short on the day and eventually losing by a massive 40 shots, which was a huge disappointment for the home side.

The only close rink was skipped by Barry 'The General' Thomas, who went down by two shots after a tight game all day.

Head selector Doug Boggie said after the game: "It was a huge disappointment today and the selection committee will have a tough job this week to make sure we have our best inform players picked at the top level."

Cranbourne 55 (0 points) lost to Keysborough 95.

Side 2 Division 3: Cranbourne lost another close encounter, going down by five shots against Chelsea.

The best rink was skipped by Chris Griffiths and his team of Gerry Dudink, John Stanley and Vic Butera who went on to win by seven shots, which was a great effort but not enough to bridge the gap.

Cranbourne 74 (4 points) lost to Chelsea 79.

Side 3 Division 5: Unfortunately for Cranbourne it was a similar result against Churchill

Waverley with a loss by 15 shots. The best rink was skipped by Ron Shields and his crew of Barry Graham, Bryan Eagle and David Brown, who all bowled well with five shots up.

Cranbourne 73 (3 points) lost to Churchill Waverley 88.

Side 4 Division 7: Playing at home against Dandenong RSL, skip John Gardiner and his crew of Frank Coulter, Brian Turton and Bob Pyne won by a massive 24 shots, which was good enough for total victory by 32 shots on the day.

Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Dandenong RSL 52.

Side 5 six-a-side: Skip Mick Feeley had to pull a rabbit out of his hat on the last bowl of the day to pull off a three-shot victory against Chelsea at home.

Mick and his team mates Al Agullana and Denis Tomlin won by three shots and skip Allen Skurrie and his team mates Stan Williams and Daniel Muir also won by three shots, giving a total victory by six shots.

Cranbourne 37 (14 points) defeated Chelsea 31.
