Lost for words By Casey Neill Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade Captain Peter Smith was speechless after receiving his 45-year service medal - a rarity, anyone who's met him would attest. "I am lucky enough to have all my family here tonight," he said, choking back tears. "To my wife Meredith, thank you very much." It was among many emotional moments at the CFA crew's annual dinner at the Upper Ferntree Gully Cricket Club on Saturday 10 November. Five other volunteer firefighters received service awards alongside Capt Smith - Mark Goodchild 30 years, Craig Waters 20, Andrew Ritchie 15, and Tom Hooper and Matt Lean five each. They'd served 120 years between them. Rod Clarke and Darren Johnson received National Medals for their diligent service and Darren's daughter, Amber, was named Best First Year Firefighter. The Mail spoke to the 17-year-old Mater Christi College student back in August. "When they started the juniors program I was straight on it," she said. "Then I just started from there and kept going." The Firefighter of the Year nod went to Daniel Abraham for his "unbelievable" work ethic, and Dylan Knowles took home the Utility Fire Fighter award.

Captain Peter Smith receives his 45-year service award.

Sign-writing couple Michael and Karen Frawley were made brigade life members for their support, and received a replica of an old brigade pumper. "What you do around the station, you might think it's frivolous but it's not," Capt Smith said. "We love you to bits and thank you very much." A gobsmacked Mr Frawley said he used to be a brigade member. "We're self-employed so we give our time back to the community," he said. "We sign write their trucks and honour boards and stickers for their helmets." Montrose 10-year-old Mia presented the brigade with a cheque for $2200, which she raised at a trivia night last month. Capt Smith in turn presented her with a trophy and thanks for her efforts. The night also included a video documenting a string of incidents that rocked the brigade 10 years ago, including losing a member in a house fire. "We fought that house fire. We cried at that house fire," Capt Smith said. They lost a truck to flames while fighting a fire in Birdsland Reserve two weeks after Black Saturday. Capt Smith and two other crew members were lucky to survive. "We were down. We got back up," he said.

The word 'humane' means compassionate and kind, so it's impossible to humanely kill an individual who desperately wants to live. Consequently, the term 'humane slaughter' is an oxymoron (Relishing choice, 6 November). But, besides that, the treatment of farmed animals, both in our farms and killing factories, is far from kind. I have just watched the new Australian documentary, Dominion, which exposes the enormous cruelty and brutality within these establishments. Hidden cameras reveal animals being

IN BRIEF John Howard joins campaign trail

Our bugs on drugs Ecologists have found over 60 different types of medications in water-dwelling animals and invertebrates at creeks near Melbourne, including the Dandenong Ranges. The study, by a global team of experts and published on Wednesday in the journal Nature Communications, found traces of 69 different drugs in insects living in six streams around Melbourne - including, to the team's surprise, a stream in the Dandenong Ranges National Park The pharmaceuticals measured included common drugs like antibiotics, antidepressants, antihistamines, and NSAIDs and study sites included a site downstream of a wastewater treatment plant and a site in a national park. Traces of pharmaceuticals were found in creature's at all six sites, even at Lyrebird Creek in the Dandenong Ranges National Park, albeit in lower concentrations.

Erinn Richmond, a freshwater ecologist at Monash University in Australia and lead author on the study, explained in the study that they "focused on riparian spiders because they build their webs over streams and feed on adult aquatic insects as they emerge from the water." "We found 69 different drugs in the bugs, including fluoxetine and mianserin (anti-depressants), fluconazole (an anti-fungal), and non-steroidal anti-inflamatories (NSAIDs), often used to treat arthritis." "We also calculated that animals that eat these aquatic invertebrates, such as platypus, would be receiving half the daily recommended dose of anti-depressants for humans." Coauthor Jerker Fick, a chemist at Umeå University in Sweden, analysed the insect and spider samples and was surprised at the saturation of drugs in waterways even in the Dandenong Ranges.

In the study he stated that 'insect tissues had drug concentrations that were orders of magnitude higher than concentrations measured in surface waters.' "We also found a diverse suite of drugs in spiders, indicating that drugs are passed from the water to prey to predator, thereby exposing other animals in the food web to drugs," he said. "Pharmaceuticals were present in every insect and spider we tested -- including those collected in Dandenong Ranges National Park," "Even this seemingly pristine site was contaminated, likely because people live in the park's drainage area and visit the park." It is not certain how human drugs end up in waterways, but its suspected that they enter the sewage system through human urine and then are not fully filtered out.

Former Prime Minister John Howard made a surprise visit to Monbulk on Friday 9 November in support of John Schurink, the Liberal candidate for Monbulk. Mr Howard joined Mr Schurink in a walk along Main Street, and visited the Monbulk CFA station where Mr Schurink promised $2.4 million towards a redevelopment under a Liberal State Government.

Sassafras speed checks Mooroolbark police have arrested a man after conducting laser speed checks in Sassafras this morning. Police arrested the 69-year-old male from Costerfield on 9 November for a number of driving related offences. Police observed the Ford Ute allegedly travelling at 77km/h in a 50km/h zone along Mount Dandenong Tourist Road just after midnight and intercepted the vehicle after it was observed speeding, displaying home made false registration plates and crossing over the dividing line. The man has been charged with speeding, unlicensed driving, unregistered motor vehicle, driving over dividing line and false registration plates. The Costerfield man has been bailed to appear at Ringwood Magistrates Court on 4 April 2019. Suspensions for speeding A 22-year-old male driver will have to find another way to get around after being detected speeding at 117 km/h in an 80 km/h zone along Wellington Road in Belgrave South. He was issued with a $604 penalty notice and his licence was suspended for six months. Motorists are reminded that increased licence suspensions for speeding offences are now in effect. Speeding between 25-30 km/h will incur a three month licence suspension and a $443 fine (increased from one month previously).

Cooper's mother Donna Anderton. "The understanding and dedication of the boys, and all at their own initiative, is uplifting. Their efforts will be treasured by our families forever.' St Thomas More Principal, Caroline Quinton said she was touched by the students selfless gesture. "It was all decided by themselves that they'd like to do it and where the money would go .. I'm so incredibly proud of them," she said. "I think it was just such a very kind caring and compassion and thoughtful thing to do, and obviously considerate of the needs of others over their own."

Operation Furlong On Sunday 4 November a 25-year-old male P-plate driver was detected speeding at 110 km/h in an 80 km/h zone along Wellington Road in Belgrave South. He was issued with a $443 penalty notice and following recent changes to the legislation received a three month licence suspension. A 29 year old male driver was intercepted by the Mooroolbark divisional van along Cardigan Road at 8pm on 4 November after reports from concerned members of the public in relation to his driving. The man was unlicensed, his vehicle was unregistered and had no number plates.

to receive treatment. Witnessing the challenges their school mates go through each day, the boys embraced their own challenge in secret. Receiving donations upon completing their tasks, only their parents and teachers knew of their mission. At the school assembly on Monday 30 October, the boys humbly surprised Cooper and Jorja, presenting them with the sum of $717.25 to be donated to the Royal Children's Hospital. Having regularly seen the boys ride to and from school, not only Cooper and Jorja's families, but the whole school has been moved by such a compassionate gesture. "Overwhelmed is an understatement,' said 12404839-46-18

Four inspirational students from St Thomas Mores Primary School have shown tremendous initiative raising money to support two of their class mates. Grade 5 students Liam, Tom, Harry and Jamie created Exercise for Success - a pact between the boys that for the month of September, they would each ride 15kms per week and take 10,000 steps per day. The aim was to raise funds for their friends and fellow students Cooper Anderton and Jorja Crennan. Cooper has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Jorja has Ataxia Telangiectasia and Juvenile Arthritis, and both Cooper and Jorja regularly visit the Royal Children's Hospital

A 57-year-old female driver was fortunate to escape serious injury when her vehicle left the road and rolled at Koolunga reserve in Ferntree Gully. The road was closed on 6 November for about an hour while the driver was freed from her vehicle by emergency services. She was transported to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. Drugs or alcohol have been ruled out and police are investigating whether excessive speed on wet roads contributed to the collision. Anyone who witnessed the collision or the silver Mazda travelling North on Forest Road prior to the collision is urged to contact police.

Wood wants it widened By Derek Schlennstedt VicRoads statistics show that since 2013 there have been four fatalities, 35 serious injuries and 14 crashes involving cyclists along Mount Dandenong Tourist Road. La Trobe MP Jason Wood provided the Mail with the figures, and said they showed a clear need to widen the road to ensure the safety of cyclists and all road users. Since 2013 there have been 131 crashes along the stretch of road, with 276 people involved in those incidents. Earlier this year, a $40 million campaign by Mr Wood to widen the road was put on hold after the State Government found it would involve re-

moving 1000 significant trees. Mr Wood and the Federal Government originally committed $10 million to the road-widening project, and announced an extra $10 million if the State Government matched with $20 million. But following a VicRoads report, Monbulk MP James Merlino said the “mass removal of vegetation and the massive construction works required would leave a devastating scar on the mountain” and that the State Government would not match the funding. “If this project has the level of impact as advised by VicRoads, I will do everything in my power to ensure it does not go ahead,” he said. Mr Wood responded to the concerns about tree removal by saying the project would only

remove weeds, including sycamores, ivy and onion weed, and that widening the road would improve safety in the event of a bushfire. He said the statistics showed that there was a clear need for the widening and that locals deserved better safety. “This is the biggest injection of funding in this area for a road in the Dandenong’s to make it safer, to make it safer for families and cyclists and all road users,” Mr Wood said. “I’m a former police officer and I’ve attended crashes there, and from the perspective of a former police officer straight away those figures should be a concern to everyone. “The less narrow the road, the better, especially in an emergency situations.”

Puffing Billy conductor Robert Webster with Les Fenwick.

Upon arriving at Belgrave he was bombarded by warm greetings from volunteers and friends who welcomed him back to the station with open arms.

The legend of Les lives By Derek Schlennstedt When Les Fenwick visited Puffing Billy on 9 November he was all cheer and chatters and could barely move without being greeted by other volunteers and old friends. That's because after 26 years of volunteering for the century-old railway Les is part of the furniture, with many current volunteers remembering his stories and shiny conductor's shoes. For Les returning to the station after retiring in 2014, and being able to ride the train once more brought back many fond memories. "My word, it brings back so many memories," he said.

"There are so many good ones I can't just pick one that stands out." "I didn't think I was this popular," he joked. Mr Fenwick joined Puffing Billy as a volunteer in 1988, after retiring from work. His daughter, Christine Pearson said that after Les retired her mother, Freda told him to go and volunteer at Puffing Billy, where she would also join him two years later. "When he retired, mum said to him, 'you need to find something to do and wouldn't puffing billy be a good place to volunteer at,'" said Christine. "Yes I was being told to get out of the house," Mr Fenwick added.

James Merlino MP LABOR MEMBER FOR MONBULK

Since then Mr Fenwick has held most positions on Puffing Billy, from conductor to station master, and ticket inspector. Though, he spent the majority of his career at Puffing Billy as a conductor and trained a number of the younger volunteers - many who remember his stringent conductor's dress code and shiny black shoes. "Les is one of the most brilliant, likeable people you'd ever run into," close friend and Puffing Billy volunteer Roger Willsher said. "He always taught me about safety and courtesy and making the day about the passengers that ride with us and I really admire him for that." "I felt I had to do this for him, because he

might not get a chance to do it again." For Les that chance was a trip on the train to lakeside and a walk down memory lane. Upon arriving at Belgrave he was bombarded by warm greetings from volunteers and friends who welcomed him back to the station with open arms. When it came time for the train to leave Belgrave, that same beaming smile that welcomed thousands of passengers so many years before returned to his face, though he admitted there was one small difference from when he used to catch the train. "Unfortunately I don't think I can sit on the edge with my legs out," he joked.

It’s NDIS a year on By Casey Neill It's a year since the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) landed in the Yarra Ranges. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is celebrating the milestone and says more than 4100 Yarra Ranges, Maroondah and Knox residents were now benefitting from the roll out of one of the largest social reforms in Australia's history. The NDIS is a new way to help people aged under 65 years with disability, and their families, to get care and support. But when the Mail asked its Facebook followers about their NDIS experiences, most were negative. Angela Jones said her family was worse off. "I used to get respite through the council and home help from other providers, but we get neither now," she said.

"Therapies we used to access aren't available in our area so we have to travel further and they cost more because agencies have put their prices up. "Other services that were accessible in our area now have years-long waiting lists." Marie Rulz said she was still waiting to access her funds and support after receiving her plan on 1 May. She has no support co-ordinator "so I have no clue how I can use my funds". Erica Schembri said she called in January and had an access request meeting in July, but hasn't been approved yet and is still waiting for a funding meeting for her son. Joanne Arrowsmith said the NDIS had only just reached her area, "but the thought of applying from seeing others' experiences is just too much". "I have been to information sessions but it

is so overwhelming," she said. Meredith Whitelaw said her access plan was up and running just over six weeks after applying, and she had a good support worker. "But I get really mad with the multi-layered cost approach within the NDIS system and the restraints it places on people in terms of being locked into agreements that don't totally benefit them," she said. "I also find the requirements of having assessments so others can tell me what I need or want a debacle considering my own expertise, and the fact that an assessment costs twice as much as what's wanted." Ms Whitelaw is writing a guide to help others navigate the system. Rebekah Fowler said that on the one hand the NDIS had been brilliant. "We were self-funded before NDIS and it was very costly, so that has been a huge relief for our family," she said.

Clean out the closet for good Families of West Gully Preschool in Ferntree Gully have been cleaning out their closets as part of an innovative fund-raiser that has helped to raise funds for not only themselves, but also for SIDS and KIDS. The organisation is known for inventing the signature Red Nose Day and raises funds and awareness of Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The preschool community recently took part in a Closet Cleanout - a clothing recycling program that partners with SIDS and Kids. Local families collected 165 kilograms of pre-loved clothing, for which closet clean-out paid 40 cents per kilogram, netting the preschool a profit of $66. The donated goods provide low-cost cloth-

ing for families in need and help Red Nose to fund vital research and deliver safe-sleeping education. The money West Gully Preschool has raised will help to buy additional resources for the preschool. “Our preschool has worked hard to promote sustainability, which includes supporting external agencies – in this case SIDS and KIDS,” teacher Leanne Kapetanovski said. “We are grateful for all the support we have received form our families this year - to collect 165kg of clothes is pretty amazing. “Closet Cleanout is a great fundraiser because we are not asking families to buy anything – just clean out things they have lying around the house.”

Step up for sight help By Derek Schlennstedt One of Australia's most iconic landmarks, the Eureka Tower, has joined forces with The Fred Hollows Foundation to invite people to 'step up for sight' by taking on the 11th annual Eureka Stair Climb on Sunday 25 November. Around 2,500 participants, ranging from social to elite competitors, are expected to sign up for the challenge which involves scaling 1,642 steps, or 88 floors, to the Eureka Skydeck at the top of the Eureka Tower. For the first time, Australia's premier stair climbing event has partnered with The Fred Hollows Foundation to raise vital funds for its work to end avoidable blindness. Not only will participants push themselves physically and mentally to ascend the 297-metre skyscraper, they will aim to raise at least $350,000 to restore sight to some of the poorest people in the world. One of those contestants taking part in the event is Ali Wightwick from Monbulk, who was taking part in her second Eureka Tower stair climb and was glad that it was for a good cause. "Its' going to help a really good cause and help people with blindness," she said "My mother has lost her sight in one eye so I do have some insight so if I can help someone else by raising some money for the foundation then why not." Each participant must raise at least $50, which can change the lives of up to two people as The Fred Hollows Foundation can restore sight for as little as $25 in some countries. Every Eureka Stair Climber who completes the event will receive a finishing medal and prizes will be on offer for the winning times and best dressed by category. REMEMBRANCE DAY

Poppies for peace plan By Casey Neill Graeme Legge told the Emerald Remembrance Day service about his father, Private Albert Edgar Legge, who was among the 66 locals who did return home from World War I. “My father was a member of the 5th Battalion and served in Ypres and at the Somme,” he said. “He suffered mustard gas poisoning and also aphasia, which is a neurological disorder that left him unable to speak for a number of months. “A few years before he died, he became blind, and we always wondered whether this

had something to do with the mustard gas poisoning.” Mr Legge wore the kit bag his father carried on board Puffing Billy the day he returned home. The soldiers caught the broad gauge line to Upper Ferntree Gully before boarding Puffing Billy. Christine Weller and Matt Francis recited In Flanders Fields during the service, and Mark Fenby sang I Was Only 19 as community members placed poppies on the cenotaph. La Trobe MP Jason Wood also spoke, war planes flew overhead in a special display, and recorded sounds of war rang out during the service, from bombs to gunfire.

Children carry photos of the men who didn't return home to Emerald.

Siblings Ashton, 6, and Brielle, 7, attended the service with their dad Kade Rogers, who served with the Navy in Iraq, Afghanistan and Timor as a combat photographer.

A sea of red engulfed Emerald.

Descendants of two men who did return to the area, Graeme Legge and June Styling, carried honour boards with the names of the 66 who came home.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

We will never forget them By Derek Schlennstedt At 100 years on from the signing of the treaty that ended World War I, cenotaphs and memorials across the Dandenong Ranges, fell silent at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, in memory of those who have died in war. The ceremonies were marked with the laying of wreaths, the placing of poppies, and the reading of the poem 'In Flanders Fields' and the reply 'We Shall Keep the Faith'. At Belgrave-Upwey RSL the involvement of Tecoma Primary School and local community groups recognised the impact of the loss of thousands of young lives on small, rural communities throughout Australia's history of involvement in war. David Eaton, President at Upwey- Belgrave RSL reflected on the 100th anniversary. "The last three years have seen a number of centenaries however 2018 is particularly significant as it marks the centenary of the end of WW1," Mr Eaton said. "The 11th November 1918 marked the end of the bloodiest war the world had seen - the war to end all wars." "Of the Australian population of 5 million, 300,000 young men went to the Great War, more than two thirds were casualties of the war, 60,000 Australian soldiers died and 156,000 were wounded or taken prisoner." "All Australian soldiers were volunteers ... it is important we remember them all, those who did come home and more importantly those who didn't." The service ended with a moving rendition of the Last Anzac performed by the students at Tecoma Primary School.

Lest we forget.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Reflecting at Remembrance Park By Russell Bennett Though it's been a hundred years since the guns fell silent to mark the end of the First World War, the scars of war have long since remained. At the aptly-named Remembrance Park in Gembrook on Sunday, local residents gathered around the memorial that commemorates those who have served in the various conflicts in which Australia has been involved. They heard from Gembrook CFA volunteer Brent Gazzaniga, and local resident and businessman Andy Gordon - who spoke from the heart when it came to their own reflections of Remembrance Day. Mr Gordon spoke about his great uncle, famed wartime artist Will Dyson, and also about his great friend - Gembrook icon and RSL president Norm Smith - who was too overcome with emotion to talk at the service. "Norm (Gembrook RSL president Norm Smith) asked me to say a few words as my uncle was a well-known war cartoonist and artist in the First World War," he said. "When Norm asked me to speak, he said, himself, that he'd like to but he couldn't because he was overcome by emotion - and it's affecting me too, I'm sorry. "The connection to Gembrook is that the Dyson family bought Crown Land here and our family still remains on that land. "He (Will) volunteered very early to go to the Front, and he was twice wounded being up

front with the troops and doing his drawings. "He was greatly moved by the deeds of his countrymen, and his sympathies always lay for the working man. "He hated the war, and said he'd never draw a line to show war except as the filthy business it is." Mr Gordon also spoke about Mr Smith's own family story, and was clearly deeply moved by it. As just a young child, Mr Smith saw his father for the last time - when he said goodbye before he left for war. "That still stays with him today," Mr Gordon said. "What he remembers is that in those times, it wasn't considered acceptable for a son to kiss his father goodbye." Mr Gazzaniga, a returned serviceman, read a stirring poem about the all-too-often forgotten heroes of war - the soldiers, themselves. Titled 'Just a Common Soldier (A Soldier Died Today)', it was written in 1987 by A. Lawrence Vaincourt. Cardinia Shire councillor Leticia Wilmot also attended the service and read the John McCrae poem 'In Flanders Fields'. As the nation paused to remember at 11am, there were representatives from a variety of generations at Gembrook's Remembrance Park - each standing in silence to pay their respects to those who had served, and made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

The Lilydale Cenotaph.

Lilydale abloom with poppies Gembrook stalwart Andy Gordon spoke of his own family's connection to war.

More than 6000 poppies adorned the Lilydale Cenotaph and surrounds in Main Street ahead of Remembrance Day. Casey MP Tony Smith said Sharon Chuck and other ladies volunteered their time to crochet and knit the individual poppies, and Don Parsons and the Lilydale RSL assisted with the project.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Melba declared ‘it’s peace’ By Casey Neill A donkey joined Mount Evelyn RSL's early Remembrance Day service for local schools. Kim Fawkes dressed in a World War I uniform and led a donkey around the memorial garden as attendees at the Friday 9 November service heard about Simpson and his donkey. Simpson became famous for his work as a stretcher-bearer in Gallipoli, using a donkey brought in for carrying water to transport wounded men. "This Sunday will mark 100 years since the terrible conflict known as the First World War ended," Mount Evelyn RSL secretary Anthony McAleer told students from St Mary's Catholic Primary, Birmingham Primary and Yarra Hills Secondary College. He said word of the Armistice to end the four-year war reached Australia in the evening of 11 November via telegraph machine. Dame Nellie Melba was the first person in the area to receive the news. "In those days Melba was as famous and cool as Lady Gaga," Mr McAleer explained to the students. "She wanted to tell everyone." She ordered her car, whirled down to the village of Lilydale, seized the rope of the bell at the fire station and rang it. Locals emerged from their homes to find out what was going on and Melba told them "it's peace". Celebrations lasted long into the night and included a band and bonfire. Retired Major Ken Mackenzie spoke about his grandfather, who served in WWI. "Grandma told me never to ask him about the war," he said. He occasionally dared to, and heard mostly

about his grandfather's interaction with horses. "Tears would streak grandad's cheeks when he recalled their screams," he said. "Then he'd clam up and I knew the discussion was over.

Students read poems, shared stories and read the names of Mount Evelyn's fallen.

"Every time one of his horses were injured or killed, a piece of my grandfather died with them. "It was only after my return from the Vietnam War that my grandfather really opened up to me."

The RSL sub-branch also held a service on Remembrance Day itself, Sunday 11 November.

NEWS

Fun fair goes ahead By Derek Schlennstedt

Front from left, Selby CFA members Anthony Wright, Neville Aldham, Sonia Schaeffner, behind are Claire Ricketts and Rod Sullivan are gearing up for the Selby CFA fair despite the station being closed. 130651 the Selby fire brigade would still be operational from another location and urged people to come along to the fair. "CFA have managed to secure us a property that's vacant in Selby with a big shed to fit our two trucks and ultra light in, so there's no

difference in our service delivery to the community," he said. The Selby fire brigade fair and awareness day will be held on 17 November at 1 Greenwell road from 9am to 3pm, and there will also be two bushfire information sessions on 4 and 6 December in the Church Hall.

Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School is one of 93 schools across Victoria sharing in $15 million to build all-access play areas, sensory gardens and outdoor learning areas to support students with disabilities and additional needs. Labor Monbulk incumbent James Merlino announced on 30 October that Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School is receiving $200,000 to create an oral language and sensory play space, consisting of an outdoor area connected to a classroom. This will mean that there will be decking, a sand and water area, and accessible benches and ledges at different heights. The fund is helping government schools better support the social and education needs of young people with a disability. Mr Merlino said that Inclusive education was about ensuring that all students, regardless of disabilities or other differences are able to fully participate, learn, develop and succeed in Victorian government schools. "As we build the Education State, we're continuing to invest in schools to ensure students of all abilities can access a great education - no matter their circumstances." "These projects are all about giving our primary schools the equipment and infrastructure they need to inspire a lifelong passion for learning for all of their students and to show that disability isn't a barrier to learning and achieving." "This language and sensory play space will make a real difference by ensuring Upper Ferntree Gully Primary School provides an even more inclusive environment for all students."

12403865-RA45-18

The Selby fire station may be closed for construction but that doesn't meant the fair won't go ahead. This year's Selby fire brigade fair and awareness day will be held on 17 November at 1 Greenwell Road opposite the fire station. With construction taking place on the old station, the fair has had to be relocated. Neville Aldham, Community Safety Coordinator at Selby Fire Brigade said that despite the station being closed the fair would go ahead as per usual. He said that there will be plenty of activities at the fair which is taking place at a residents house, opposite the station "It's still going ahead, and there will be plenty of fire awareness activities, also huge plant sale, hot/cold food, raffles and lots to keep the kids amused," Mr Aldham said. "The aim of the fair is to inform the community about the upcoming fire season and to come and find out what needs to be done to prepare."A highlight of the fair will be a model railway display and a model house that displays a well prepared property and an unprepared property. "A bit of an attraction is on the grounds of his place is garden scale model railway that runs around his front yard... we're trying to set up like a garden party," Mr Aldham said. "We've also got the good house, bad house model where one side is a house not prepared and the other is well prepared and we use it to demonstrate what you need to do to prepare properly." Earlier this year in August, Labor Monbulk incumbent James Merlino announced that the ageing Selby station would be replaced with a $1.26 million state-of-the-art, three-bay facility. With construction occurring over the fire season, Mr Aldham reassured residents that

Ken and Helen Hunt from Monbulk Jewellers have just finished a refurbishment of their shop and have introduced some beautiful new products to give their business an uplift. Australian Argyle Pink Diamond Jewellery adds life and a new dimension to their Australian Chocolate Diamond range and continues with the Australian gems and Australian made jewellery theme that Ken and Helen promote and support. They have restocked with all of the usual favourites and have also added a new and affordable silver designer range, 'Ania Haie jewellery.' Ken and Helen have also upgraded and refreshed their Classique and Citizen watch ranges and added many other new and exciting things to help make this Christmas special. As well as lots of new products, they are proud to say that the relocation of their experienced Jeweller, Michael Gelgec, last February has been a great success. The couple said that the shop's high-quality repair service now runs smoother, faster and more efficient. Michael and Ken work together to give customers what they want. From the design and creation of the perfect new engagement ring to the remodelling or restoration of a treasured family heirloom, they do it all. Michael's inclusion has enhanced the business enormously and he has created some magnificent new pieces for Ken and Helen to display.

From right: Vibe Health and Fitness Owner Tiffany Smith with Amy Barlow, Debbie Sceen and Isabelle Waters.

Get the right fitness vibe Emerald's Vibe Health and Fitness Centre has been a locally owned and operated family club for more than 10 years. Owners Tiffany and Brendan purchased the block of land in 2007 before developing the business' concept and design. Their mission has always been to "build a happier, healthier, more vibrant community". Tiffany says that the centre is a "full-service club for the whole family from five years old to 105-years-old."

"We are bigger than you think with a huge variety of machines and classes to get you moving," she said. "All members receive a health check and personalised program when they join and receive regular updates so they're never alone and can keep working towards their goals. " We have fantastic group fitness classes featuring Les Mills Bodypump and RPM, meditation and yoga, pilates and boxing. "Our amazing active adults (over 50s) class

While Tiffany has over 20 years experience working with elite athletes, weekend warriors and rehabilitation members, she has also attended state, national and international conferences and has received many industry and business awards. She says that most of her staff members at Vibe Health and Fitness started as members of the club and "got hooked."

Vibe Health and Fitness Centre also caters for special needs, TAC and Work Cover and is NDIS compliant. Members and locals are encouraged to keep an eye on Vibe as a new school holiday program is set to kick off in January, while kids classes will commence in 2019. Bakery spreading its wings Whether you're a local or just passing through Healesville, you'll never be disappointed with a visit to the Beechworth Bakery this festive season. The bakery has a long and proud history of serving high quality baked goods, as well as supporting the local community. Originally established in Beechworth, the Healesville bakery is one of six that are located in Victorian towns. Now a Healesville icon, the bakery combines old-fashioned service with modern facilities. Manager Kylie Bray says that customers are drawn to the personal touch provided by the employees. "We offer great customer service and enthusiastic and friendly staff to cater for our customers' needs," she said. Open seven days a week, from 6am to 6pm, the bakery is in the perfect location on the Maroondah Highway in Healesville. It caters for groups of all sizes and offers a huge car park, capable of holding anything from motorbikes to caravans. While sitting outside, visitors to the bakery can enjoy great views of the mountains from the relaxing outdoor setting. The grassed area allows visitors to take in the beautiful park bridge, as well as making for easy access to the park. Inside, the bakery has a friendly and relaxing vibe. It boasts an open-seating plan, plenty of tables, a play area for kids and couches for the travel-weary. ENTERTAINMENT

Singing out for shelter Five local musicians and singers are offering a musical gift to help women and children experiencing homelessness. After a successful concert last year the Sacred Stage Charity concert will be held on Sunday 2 December at 127 Colby Drive, Belgrave Heights. Singer and organiser, Jacqui Rutten said there would be plenty of entertainment for a variety of musical tastes. The concert will include a premiere of a new song cycle for voice and cello, Opus 98 The Blind Poetess, with words by Irish poetess Frances Brown and music by Jacqui Rutten. There will also be songs composed in the hills, and instrumental music such as; Bach violin solos, and Spanish music for cello and guitar. "It's just an hour of music and what makes the song specials that I'm composing they were composed in Ireland, while I was a composer in Residence," she said. "I set six songs to A Blind Poetess, and visited the birthplace of the blind poetess which was fascinating." "Many of the songs are about nature and

have very beautiful words." "The songs are all for voice and cello, and we have a wonderful cellist, who plays with Orchestra Victoria." "There's also some Spanish music and other songs." Ms Rutten has run Sacred Stage since 2007, and creates concerts - from sacred song to Improvisations as Nature - for churches, cathedrals, festivals, universities, and galleries. She regularly organises concerts for charity, particularly for homeless people. "Through Sacred Stage I put on concerts often for charity," she said. "I began busking at 14, and since then I've been involved in music ever since, so this is a culmination of my life's experience in music but also have social work training so it's great to be able to bring both these skills together and help the needy." The Concert is on Sunday 2 December at 2:30pm at the Southern Sherbrooke Historical Society Hall, 127 Colby Drive, Belgrave Heights. Entry is by donation.

Singer, composer Jacqui Rutten is helping to coordinate the charity concert.

Film festival attracts interest Expressions of interest are now being accepted from schools for the Rapa Lantern and Light Children's Film Festival. RAPA is a not-for-profit organisation that runs classes for young people aged 7-18 in film making, drama, and dance. Earlier this year the group announced their Lantern and Light International Children's Film Festival which will take place at the Belgrave Cameo in 2019 and coincide with the Belgrave Lantern festival. The festival will feature three days of International and Australian short films specifically made by young people. mailcommunity.com.au

Local Bendigo Bank branches have approved funding to Ranges Academy of Performing Arts (RAPA) Inc. to provide film making mentoring to schools in the region and RAPA are now putting the word out. "This exciting initiative recognises that whilst some teachers & schools might be excited to engage in making a film with their students, they might not have the necessary film production background to do so," RAPA director, Rainsford Towner said. "This can integrate into existing curriculum activities including literacy, writing, story construction, sciences, environment and social awareness".

"You hear about a lot of children's film festivals, but most of them are films made for children not by them." "Students will be part of the jury and be part of the selection panel. "They'll be integrated into the experience themselves and take ownership for it ... it will be a great opportunity for budding film makers." If any schools are interested in this please email your interest to rangesacademy@ gmail.com and RAPA will contact you to arrange a time to discuss the mentoring in more detail.

The Girl In The Spider's Web is a compelling crime thriller and a stunning work of acting and atmosphere. Infamous Swedish hacker Lisbeth Salander (Claire Foy) confronts the demons from her past as she fights to keep a deadly program from the hands of a crime organization. Foy delivers a riveting performance as Lisbeth, portraying an aggressive yet honourable woman with a razor-sharp mind and indomitable will covering deep mental trauma. Sylvia Hoeks complements Foy perfectly as Lisbeth's vengeful sister Camilla, combining shocking cruelty with a soft-spoken elegance. The Girl In The Spider's Web has powerful imagery and a harsh, grungy ambience. Feeling like a female James Bond movie at times, the film demonstrates how capable and tenacious Lisbeth is, with her many fancy gadgets and contingencies, while still stacking the odds severely against her, as Camilla shows a disquieting initiative in her vendetta against Lisbeth. Unfortunately, major character Mikael Blomkvist (Sverrir Gudnason) receives significant focus despite serving little function in the narrative, which causes the pacing to drag. While tense and visceral, the action scenes are often poorly-composed; in one climactic fight, the gloomy mist-filled setting, quick cuts and face-obscuring gas-masks make it difficult to keep track of who's who. Despite chaotic action and a redundant major character, The Girl In The Spider's Web is a grim, exciting and superbly-acted thriller. - Seth Lukas Hynes

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs formerly at the Royal Victo rian Eye Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,â€? Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. One of my best moments was treatin g a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is deďŹ nitely the best part of my job.â€? THE LOWDOWN Q&A

with Dandenong Ranges Musical Council’s Bev McAlister

What is something people don't know about you? I have no desire to be on the stage. I am really scared of big, hairy spiders. What was your most memorable moment? I am lucky to have many - a trip to Alaska with my husband, family get-togethers, surprise visits from old friends ... What would your last meal be? Oysters. How did you get involved with the DRMC? In 1979 my husband Murray and I, with the help of Bill Borthwick and other community leaders, launched the DRMC in the Monbulk Community Centre. DRMC will be 40 in 2019. It will be a big reunion and celebration of community music-making across the Yarra Ranges. I am not looking forward to going through the archives. However, the alumni of the DRMC and the memories which people will share will give me great pleasure. What event, past, present or future, would you like to witness? I would love to see every musician, band, orchestra, choir, school, blues, rock, reggae, drumming, harps, world music and Indigenous artist performing at a week-long festival across Yarra Ranges. All ages, all abilities, all music. The festival would feature music composed by local composers about the Yarra Ranges. The DRMC has in excess of 100 songs and arrangements composed over the past 40 years by locals and guest professionals. What is your favourite television show? Antiques Roadshow. What is your favourite book? Peg's Fairy Book by Peg Maltby. What do you love most about music? I love to see how music in all its genres can give communities the power to celebrate, grieve, create, perform, compose, remember, protest, entertain, heal and reflect. Music-making for

all ages and abilities is a great way to engage people. What six guests, dead or alive, would you invite to a dinner party? I would love to meet all my great, great grandparents. I have so many stories and family history still to learn. What has been your most embarrassing moment? When I was in Grade 2 at Monbulk Primary School, a large pine tree was cut down in the playground. We were told not to climb on the debris. Sadly, I did and ripped the back out of the long pants I was wearing. Mrs Jessie Crearer, who was my teacher, made me stand on the desk in front of the class while

she sewed up the tear. I have never forgotten this. At school I ... ... struggled with maths. I liked geography and music. My peers will remember Basil Moss and Mrs Morcombe pounding away on the piano at Upwey High. I remember going to the Olympic Games in a bus which got stuck in a narrow dead-end street in Richmond - there was no such thing as GPS in those days. What was your first or best concert? I have childhood memories of concerts and fancy dress balls in the Monbulk Mechanics' Institute. There have been many wonderful community concerts. The most recent big event was the Bells of Peace commemorating the Centenary of Anzac.

SPORT

Mounters are hard to beat By Chris Anderson The Yarra Valley Cricket competition had a new look at the top end following some forced changes. With Yarra Glen's unfortunate situation with players, Wandin stepped up to the top grade, DJ Strachan Shield, for the first time in nearly a decade. Although much attention was on the Bulldogs and their return to the top flight, it was Mount Evelyn who sent a warning signal to their peers. Playing at the tranquil Gary Martin Oval, the Mounters won the toss and elected to bat against their grand final foe from previous seasons, Warburton-Millgrove. Warburton-Millgrove's strength this season will lie in their miserly bowling. Early in this contest, Mount Evelyn found it difficult to find scoring opportunities as young star Bailey Humphrey and Stuart Thompson executed an accurate opening spell, followed by Cam Darwall and Adam Humphrey who kept the brakes on with their tight, slow bowling. When John O'Donnell was dismissed in the 15th over, the home side were wobbling at 3/34. Sensing his team were in a contest, captain Kane Jones took it upon himself to blast his team out of trouble and into a position of authority. This had to start with a significant partnership, and Gareth Fraser (29) held his end, rotating the strike and keeping the scoreboard ticking while Jones added the fireworks. The pair put together a brisk century partnership at quicker than a run a ball. Jones rode his luck with his aerial routes to the boundaries, but he hit the ball with such ferocity that the fielders just couldn't hang onto the chances. Jones' innings was closed at 118, and with the help of the hard-hitting Chad Witherdin (33 not out) the total blew out to 8/227 at the end of the 40 overs. Thompson (3/79) and Adam Humphrey (2/54) were the wicket takers for the Burras, but they were helpless to stop the onslaught. With a significant total to chase down, the visitors were always going to find the going tough. The opening pairing of Finn Saurine and Shane Abblitt showed plenty of grit through the opening overs, but a lack of scoring saw the required run rate blow out quickly. Jones capped a memorable day as he ripped through the middle order with 4/3, leaving the rest of the contest a formality for the Mounters. The Burras' young stars showed plenty of grit and technique late in the innings to stretch things out, but the damage had been done and eventually the home side eked out the last wickets to record a 119-run victory. Yarra Junction established themselves in the chasing pack as they outlasted Healesville in a see-sawing affair. Yarra Junction opened the contest with the bat, and despite the early wicket of Kocher, they were able to get themselves into the contest courtesy of a useful partnership between Matt Mallick and Kevin Bomford. Dan Ebbels (2/42) and Tom Daley (2/39) then quickly reduced the visitors to 5/53 to have Healesville in the ascendency.

Nick Bark joined the fray and despite his status as a bowler first, batsman second, he has contributed valuable knocks along the way, none more so than his innings in this game. With his team teetering, Bark's experience came to the fore as he guided them out of trouble and into a strong position by the end of the innings. Wily veteran Glen Thompson was his first ally in arresting control of the innings, while a partnership with Terry Ottrey allowed the innings to flourish to a conclusion of 7/162. It was Bark's innings, though, as he patiently waded his way through the mess, then allowed his innings to grow as scoring became a priority. He stood out to be unbeaten on 63 at the close. Healesville's innings followed a similar path to Yarra Junction's in the early part, as openers Michael Jackson and Ben Mackey made a solid start, followed by a glut of wickets that reduced the home team to 5/55. Caleb Hrabe (2/24) was the chief wicket taker as the innings started to head south. Ash Hamer's cavalier approach with the bat had the scoreboard ticking over quickly, and had he managed to stay at the wicket longer, perhaps the Bloods would've run away with the victory. Lachlan Dempster ruined the parade for Hamer with his innings on 41, and that signalled the end of the resistance. The lower order couldn't cope with the miserly accuracy of Terry Ottrey (3/19) and the innings was wrapped up for 118, 44 runs short of the target and inside 33 overs. Wandin found things tough in their return to the top flight against Seville.

Seville's strength is in their bowling and, true to form, they didn't give the Wandin batsmen any room to move in a clinical display with the ball, despite extras leading the scorers. Wandin did battle bravely, but regular wickets stifled their ability to ramp up the scoring, and despite batting out their overs, their total looked light-on at 112. Light-on it proved to be. Three early wickets had the home team in the contest, but with such a low total it only takes one significant partnership to arrest the momentum. Blues captain Leigh Aitkins led the charge with an unbeaten half-century, ably supported by Tom Page. Seville recorded a comfortable seven-wicket victory with 13 overs still left to play. The win gets Seville's season up and running, keeping them in touch with the pack jostling for finals positions. Next week will be the first round of two-day cricket and it will be interesting to see how the players adjust to the format change. Seville will travel to Warburton-Millgrove with plenty on the line. Warburton-Millgrove will be stung by the loss Mount Evelyn and would like to regain their status as the main challengers to the Mounters' reign. Healesville will travel to Mount Evelyn in a tough match up. Healesville has had glimpses over the opening stretch of one-dayers to kick off the season, but they will need to find some consistency if they are to outlast the white-hot Mount Evelyn unit. Finally, Yarra Junction will host Wandin and

the Eagles will be keen to establish their credentials with a clinical display against the 'new kids on the block'. Wandin, on the other hand, will continue to find their feet in the top grade, and it will be their performance rather than the result that their leaders will be looking at. Monbulk prevails at home By Eric Markham On Saturday 10 November, Monbulk Bowling Club's number one side played at home against Croydon, who were second on the ladder. It was always going to be a testing competition and that's how it played out. Brian Smith's team was five shots up on the 10th end, then dropped shots after the break, allowing Croydon to equal by the 16th end. Then Croydon won a three, and a one, and another one, to put Monbulk behind by five shots with only two ends to play. Smith rallied his team and they scored a two and a three and managed to finish with a respectable 17 shots-all draw. Richard Cookson's rink was down four shots to eight on the eighth end. They managed to regroup strongly and only drop three ends after that, coming away with a very strong win, 30 shots to 14. Andrew Bells' rink was up six shots after the first three ends. Then Croydon started getting used to the Monbulk green and came back, equaling at 10 shots all on the 11th end. Then it was a slugfest, both sides winning some shots, until the 18th end when Croydon finally got their noses in front for the first time, 18 shots to 16. That's when Monbulk put their heads down, focused and picked up six shots on the last three ends to win 22 shots to 18. The drama award of the day would have to go to Eric Markham's rink. All day they were struggling on this rink. They gave away 10 shots within three ends and were eight shots down by the 12th end. At the conclusion of the 16th end they were still seven shots behind. However, things dramatically changed and on the 17th end they picked up four shots.

Tournament winners Darren Bellingham and Eric Markham with Monbulk and District Community Bank branch manager Aimee Te Boekhorst. On the 20th end, Monbulk picked up three shots to level the scores going into last end. In a nail-biting finish, the skip with his final bowl moved the jack to his team mate's bowl, picking up one shot to win 19 shots to 18 - the only time for the whole day that they were in front. Overall, Monbulk won 88 shots to 67, moving the side into third position on the ladder.

Monbulk 2 travelled down the highway to Pakenham. Peter Francis' rink was level at the halfway mark, then picked up a couple of four-shot wins in the back half to finish with a good win, 21 shots to 14. Eric Furby's rink was close all day, slowly building up an eight-shot lead by the 18th end, then blowing away six shots the very next end to give Pakenham a chance. They managed to just hang on and finish with a win, 25 shots to 23. Lorraine McLaren's rink was strong in the front half, with a 10-shot lead by the half-way mark. Then Pakenham bounced back and hit the front by the 17th end. That's when Monbulk responded with a mighty seven shots on the 18th end and finished with a win 30 shots to 23. Dick Coppin's rink took the lead on the fourth end with a big five-shot win. Then, when it looked like they were headed for a big winning margin, Pakenham won a three and a four on the last two ends to level the scores at 20 shots all. Overall, Monbulk won 96 shots to 80. The side has only lost one game for the season and us sitting in third position on the ladder. Monbulk 3 played at home against Vermont South. Peter Hiscoxs' team maintained a close lead all day then managed a break-out in the final ends to score a win, 18 shots to 13. Doug Elliott's team won nine of the 21 ends but, on seven occasions, gave away multiples from which it was difficult to recover. The rink went down 20 shots to 33. Overall, Monbulk lost 38 shots to 46. That loss pushed the side out of the top four, but only by one point.

This Thursday 15 November, Night Owls bowls starts at 7.30pm. Bowlers should dress casually and in flatsoled shoes. Bowls can be provided. Players of all abilities are encouraged to attend and single players or teams can be accommodated. Call the club or Dick on 0437 952 368 to play, or sign up in the foyer. On Tuesday 6 November, the club held its Melbourne Cup day event. Entries were filled well in advance, with bowlers travelling from many regional clubs to take part. The weather forecast was not promising, and the bowlers arrived with their rain gear at the ready. The competition was a pairs event, with men and women competing in three games with four bowls, then three bowls, then finishing with a quick-fire two-bowls game. Unfortunately, the first round of play was still in progress when the skies opened, rain bucketed down, and bowlers had to retreat inside for an early lunch. Then the sun came out, clouds of steam wafted through the air and the greens drained quickly, allowing bowlers to recommence play. By the time the horses were lining up at Flemington, the bowlers had finished two games and still had the short, two-bowl game to complete. At the awards ceremony afterwards, Monbulk and District Community Bank branch manager Aimee Te Boekhorst gave out the prizes and reiterated the strong alliance the Bendigo Bank had with the community and Monbulk Bowling Club. Darren Bellingham and Eric Markham won first place, John Leitch and Juan Tortosa second place, and Jim Bras and Peter Koomen third.
