By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Noble Park kindergarten's community has been rocked by heartless vandals who broke in and trashed the 50-year-old centre.

On the night of Monday 4 November, intruders ransacked the normally idyllic Heatherhill Preschool.

Most dangerously, a bloodied syringe was left inside the children's giant dollhouse in the garden. In the kitchen was a puddle of urine.

"The syringe makes me feel utterly ill - that you'd feel comfortable enough to shoot up in a kindergarten," volunteer committee head Amber Thornton said.

"You don't know what they're capable of."

For two days, staff and volunteers combed the grounds and the sandpit to ensure there were no futher needles. But parents were still questioning their children's safety, Ms Thornton said.

Staff think that the intruders forced their way through the back entrance using a handmade scarecrow from the recently installed vegie patches.

The neatly arranged tables and chairs were upended, food cupboards were opened, and three iPads were stolen from the office.

One of the tablets had the only copies of photos from the centre's recent 50th birthday celebrations.

"The place was all vandalised. There was stuff everywhere," Ms Thornton said.

"They're disgusting, filthy things."

There was an attempt at forcing open a filing cabinet of childrens records as well as stealing the main desktop computer.

"It makes me sick that they could have got their hands on my child's information and every other child's in the preschool," Ms Thornton said.

"I'm so concerned that people think it's OK to do this at a kindergarten. I think the community needs to know.

"It's got to stop."

Two men have been bashed and robbed by a group of three attackers at night near Dandenong Market.

A 29-year-old victim was “seriously assaulted” during the robbery on Clow Street about 11.30pm on Saturday 27 October, Greater Dandenong CIU police say.

His passport and phone were stolen from his pockets.

A 30-year-old was also assaulted and robbed of his phone and wallet.

The three male robbers were described as of African appearance.

Police have urged an unknown passer-by who called triple-0 to contact them.

way, Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, Broad Oak Drive and Berwick-Cranbourne Road.

Opposition public transport spokesperson David Davis said the City of Casey had “substantial population growing pains” that needed “immediate government action”.

“We need to ease the population squeeze which is why I am so focused on planning for population growth so every Victorian can enjoy living in their communities.”

Cranbourne Liberal candidate Ann Marie Hermans said she and the community were disappointed that Labor wouldn’t extend the track to Clyde.

“As I door knock throughout Cranbourne East and Clyde North, many people voice their frustrations about unreliable packed trains, long commutes and the desperate need for a train station in their local area.”

Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said the “under-cooked and under-funded” Opposition plan would not enable 10-minute services to Cranbourne.

Dandenong 300-bed remand prison plan

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong could be home to a 300-bed jail, under a proposal by the Liberal Nationals state coalition.

If elected to Government, the Coalition will provide $2 million for a business case for the Eastern Victoria Remand Centre.

It would be based in Dandenong's industrial precinct or surrounds.

The centre would mean fewer remand prisoners being "baby sat" by police, opposition corrections spokesman Edward O'Donohue said.

More police would be available for frontline duties, he said.

"Fewer prisoners being baby sat or transported by police from station to station will mean more police on the beat to prevent crime and catch criminals."

According to official stats, there were 7,149 prisoners in Victoria as of 30 June 2017 - up 71 per cent in the past decade.

The Coalition has also promised a new 1300-bed jail in Lara.

In the lead-up to the State Election, the Police Association called for extra metro-Melbourne remand facilities - managed by Corrections Victoria not police.

Police were being tied up managing cells filled with sentenced and remanded prisoners, including at-risk youth, according to their statement 2018 Election Forward.

"After their first presentation at court, prisoners who are remanded should be managed in Department of Corrections facilities from this point."

Laura Chipp, Reason Party candidate and head of Victoria Police's childrens court prosecution unit, said the proposed centre would be a waste of "hundreds of millions of dollars to build".

"It is not evidence-based to stop offending among youths and adults."

The Reason Party has proposed an "evidence-based" 32-bed drug-and-alcohol and mental health facility for youth in the South East.

Two teenage boys have been patted down and robbed by a carload of males while walking on Jesson Crescent, Dandenong.

Four males got out of a silver Toyota Corolla after it pulled up alongside the 15-year-old boys about 9pm on Thursday 1 November.

They demanded property, patted down the boys and then stole their personal items.

The two victims were assaulted on the footpath and against the fence of a Ross Street property. They were not injured.

The robbers were described as African appearance, about 18 years old and wearing dark clothing.

The last four sets of boom gates on the Dandenong-Cranbourne railway line will be removed by 2025, the state ALP party has pledged.

And it won’t be all sky rail.

If re-elected, the State Government will remove level crossings at Webster Street in Dandenong, Greens Road in Dandenong South, Evans Road in Lyndhurst and Camms Road in Cranbourne.

On 5 November Premier Daniel Andrews announced the plan at Dandenong railway station, currently shut down for works to cater for the coming high-capacity metro trains.

Webster Street crossing would likely be removed by a “hybrid” solution - rail being raised over a lowered road, Mr Andrews said.

The Greens Road grade separation would consist of a rail bridge over road.

Crossings at Evans and Camms roads would be replaced by road bridges over rail.

It’s part of a $6.6 billion promise to remove 25 further level crossings by 2025, including four in Pakenham using ‘elevated rail’.

The Cranbourne-line removals would free nearly 40,000 vehicles a day stuck at the intersections, the Government claims.

Sixteen near-misses and a fatality had been recorded at the Greens Road crossing since 2012.

No property was expected to be acquired as part of the project, Mr Andrews said.

It comes on top of a $750 million pledge to duplicate the rail track between DandenongCranbourne - a project that would employ at least 1000 jobs.

The duplication would ensure 10 minute train services on the line, with $7 million planning for an extension to Clyde, he said.

The Government had removed 11 level crossings as part of the ‘sky rail’ project between Caulfield-Dandenong.

VCE centre to ease study pain

Special school to rise at derelict site Labor has promised a "world-class" special school on the site of the former Endeavour Hills Secondary College.

The Endeavour Hills Special School has been pledged to be fully funded, built and opened in 2022.

The State Government had committed planning funding for the project in the 201819 budget.

Drive had been the subject of a community campaign since the former school was shut down by the previous Government.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the school would service a growing demand in the South East.

"We are committed to making sure that every child is given the appropriate support they need to achieve and succeed - not only at school but in their lives beyond.

"Since I was elected, I have often been asked about our plans for the old Endeavour Hills Secondary site, which has been collecting rubbish for too long."

Ms Williams said it was "fitting" to transform the site into a "state-of-the-art" school for children with additional needs.

The Liberal-Nationals Coalition has pledged $1.3 million towards a centre for VCE students at the suburb's Gleneagles College campus.

Gleneagles Secondary College has been promised a dedicated centre for VCE students under a Liberal-Nationals State Government.

If elected, the Coalition will commit more than $1.3 million towards the project.

The centre would be a space for VCE students, including study areas, a kitchenette, careers centre, multipurpose space and toilets.

Currently 1400-plus students are enrolled at the school.

About a third of classes are being held in portable classrooms, Narre Warren North Liberal candidate Vicki Fitzgerald said.

"The school was originally built as a Year 7-10 campus, so facilities for senior students were not a priority in the original design.

"The students ... will greatly benefit from this VCE Centre as it will provide modern and contemporary facilities to nurture positive learning outcomes and great educational results."

Opposition education spokesman Tim Smith said the project was part of a plan to "get back in control of education and ease the population squeeze".

"Out of control population growth caused by the Andrews Labor Government's lack of planning is placing enormous pressure on our schools."

On 7 November, the State Government pledged to build a Special School on the site of the demolished Endeavour Hills Secondary College.

Sports clash over track Parkfield Cricket Club secretary David Swierzbiolek said the larger cricket oval would finally meet official regulations.

It would also remove the hazard of an asphalt perimeter track for fielders, and allow for attractions like a surrounding playground and barbecues.

"I don't see (the track) as a benefit compared to what the masterplan is offering," Mr Swierzbiolek said.

Meanwhile cyclists are re-forming the Dandenong Noble Park Cycling Club in the hope of saving the Parkfield track. They argue a relatively cheap resurfacing of the track - with a rebuild of its most warped section - would create a regional cycling attraction.

Member Kim Nguyen, of Springvale, said there was space for the proposed shared pavilion alongside the velodrome.

"The whole area can be upgraded without downgrading the pavilion."

He took heart from a meeting with Greater Dandenong chief executive John Bennie and city planning director Jody Bosman at the track on Melbourne Cup Day. The track had been under-promoted for years, escaping the notice of avid cyclists living just streets away, Mr Nguyen said.

In recent weeks, 30 cyclists in the South East, including Greater Dandenong, had given their intention to sign up with the cycling club, he said.

After a local doorknock, Ms Muric said that 97 per cent of neighbours backed the plan.

There's doubts that many of the cycling club are locals, she said.

"If the cycling club hadn't left 20 years ago, there wouldn't be an issue."

Mr Swierzbiolek added: "That's where the local people become frustrated. They haven't given back to the community like the local clubs have for years."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells In the face of a cyclist backlash, three sports clubs are stepping up their support for the demolition of at Parkfield Reserve's velodrome.

Noble Park Tennis Club, Noble Park United Soccer Club and Parkfield Cricket Club say they have gathered hundreds of local signatures for a petition backing Greater Dandenong Council's draft masterplan.

The masterplan includes the demolition of Maurice Kirby Velodrome to make way for an extra soccer field and a shared walking-cycling path, as well as a modern pavilion shared by the clubs.

The pavilion is a desperately-needed upgrade, replacing the clubs' cramped, dilapidated 50-year-old facilities.

The clubs have lobbied the council hard for new rooms for more than six years. They're told the pavilion upgrade hinges on the masterplan being approved by Greater Dandenong councillors.

The needs of the clubs are stark. At the tennis club, wide cracks are spreading through its brick walls. Its storeroom is bizarrely open to the elements - it is dubbed 'the Narnia cupboard', says club president Suzanne Lawrence.

Barely a dribble escapes from the changeroom showers, stained brown by dirty water mains pipes.

The cricket and soccer clubs share a pavilion with a tiny function room, cramped player and ref changerooms, and a cluttered kitchen with little gap between the oven door and the fridge.

Under the plan, the cricket nets will be moved away from a pedestrian footpath.

Noble Park United secretary Lillie Muric said the extra soccer field was essential for the club's survival in a fast-growing sport.

For the first time, the club could offer teams for juniors.

Victims step up for change

Two independent election candidates, both victims of shattering family violence, want to fix a "broken system".

Nicole Lee and Tarang Chawla are running as a 'bloc' of South East Metro independent candidates in the 24 November State Election.

Ms Lee has escaped a violent 10-year-long marriage, Mr Chawla's sister was killed by her partner in 2015.

Both say they were let down by authorities - and as a result, became advocates to fix the problems.

Soberingly, more than 50 women have been murdered across Australia so far this year. In Casey, family violence incidents are "astronomically high", Mr Chawla said.

Yet still coverage on the issue has been low on the radar this election, he says.

Ms Lee and Mr Chawla met at the state's Royal Commission into Family Violence in 2015.

"Tragedy brought us together but a deep desire to see real change and diverse representation is what drives us now," Ms Lee said.

"For myself I'm a woman living with a disability - I don't see people with disabilities in politics.

"How can we make decisions for the whole of the community when not all of the community is represented?"

Ms Lee said instead of being just "tough on crime", there needed to be more talk on better supporting victims.

She recalls being hospitalised due to injuries inflicted by her husband. After treatment, the hospital rang him to pick her up.

"I needed them to step up and help me get out of the situation.

"No one took any action and you have to ask why."

When the case went through the courts, Ms Lee felt "dehumanised".

"We become completely faceless. Your

name is never spoken of - you're known as 'the witness'.

"I became no one while the focus was on the person who committed the crime."

The Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal was also "broken", Ms Lee said.

"It wasn't worth going through for the compensation - the extra pressure and heartache to justify the trauma I've gone through."

Mr Chawla said for many women - like his sister - the signs of abuse are too readily ignored.

Her life may have been saved if her terrified calls to triple-0 had been better heeded.

Three months before she was killed, her husband had threateningly brandished a knife in the home.

"It's about services working together and properly identifying risk," Mr Chawla said.

The pair say they want to ensure each of the 227 recommendations from the Royal Commission are enacted in a strategic, planned way.

Mr Chawla says while 39 per cent of recommendations have been "ticked off" in two years, it's not necessarily making people safer.

"We have to stick to the plan that the Royal Commission gave us."

Ms Lee adds: "We need to not rush it but to get it right."

Mr Chawla said there were no family violence support hubs in the South East despite Casey's high incidence of family violence.

The nearest hub was in Frankston.

"You've got to drive across six suburbs in Casey to go there, or catch a train to Caulfield and then to Frankston.

"The burden we're putting on mothers trying not to be killed - it's too much."

There was also a lack of in-language groups to connect with diverse communities, Mr Chawla said.

"While our government has made some progress, they're missing the big picture.

"We have a voice and it's our duty to speak up."

Homeless handyman crashes in A talented writer who allegedly fell into an ice habit and homelessness was refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates Court.

Brenton Kade Cowell, 30, faced charges included a burglary at the Berwick Waters retirement village in July, where two hot water systems, a sink, two stoves, a shower base, shower set and tap assembly were stolen.

Cowell also admitted to selling a Posh Stylus bath tub stolen from an under-construction estate on 'Gumtree' for $150, according to a police summary tendered in court.

He was also accused of throwing garden rocks at a man while working on a building site in Endeavour Hills.

While being sought by police, Cowell allegedly fled by jumping over neighbours' fences in Berwick on 14 September.

At one stage, he climbed onto a home's roof, removing five tiles and crawling into the roof cavity, police claim.

In the process, Cowell put his knee through the lounge-room ceiling. Two female residents fled their home in fear, the police summary stated.

Police climbed into the roof to arrest Cowell, who allegedly resisted arrest.

He was also charged with possessing meth-

amphetamine at the time, which he had admitted to smoking earlier that morning.

Until recently, the trained plumber lived in Berwick and had won a $10,000 essay-writing competition in his teens, the court heard.

He was now couch-surfing, and had a problem with meth, his lawyer told the court on 29 October.

During his in-person bail application, Cowell said he was working as a handyman when he could.

"I feel like I'm trying to get on with my life, I don't feel like I'm a threat," he said.

He said he'd been driving with false number plates due to needing to get to jobs. He "didn't really make anything" out of the alleged burglary, he told the court.

"It's a completely drug related thing ... me being around the wrong set. I'm trying to get rid of the drugs and the people."

That day, Cowell had been arrested in Dandenong at a car containing methamphetamine - though he denied the 'ice' was his.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Cowell had failed to attend appointments on the intensive CISP bail program, while failing to attend court and re-offending.

Cowell was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 14 November.

But the news is great in every sense of the word, and was received with intense gratification by all loyal citizens of the Commonwealth. On Monday evening the official news came to hand that the armistice has been signed between the Allies and Germany. There was soon a large gathering at the Town Hall where the president of the shire (Cr Abbott) addressed the assemblage and his speech was greeted with loud applause. Cr Abbott also outlined the programme arrangements for the peace celebrations throughout the shire. The fire bell and the church bells made quite a din, and people did not want to go to bed.

50 years ago 12 November 1968 Show Bonanza!

One word describes the 97th Dandenong Show last Saturday....a record. An estimated attendance of 20,000, gate takings of $5542 - 25% higher than last year, highest number of entries, highest number of show girls, biggest array of trade exhibits, widest variety of side shows.

Perhaps the best gauge was that of side show people who travel almost every state on a year round show and carnival circuit. They told the assistant secretary Mr Dan Greene that Dandenong was the outstanding one day show in Australia they attended annually.

20 years ago 9 November 1998 Looking after our heritage The City of Greater Dandenong has hired consultants to develop an inventory of possible heritage sites in the city, with 80 places identified so far. The councils heritage officer Ms Colleen Lazenby, said a public workshop would be held for the consultants to talk about the sites and their historical importance. Haggis, the ‘hot’ new dish

It's delicious, especially if you don't know what's in it.

But more and more locals are setting aside pre-judgements. And even putting a slice of haggis on the 'barbie', says Dandenong butcher Rob Boyle.

If the rumours are right, his haggis was certainly good enough for Prince Harry and Princess Meghan during their recent visit to Melbourne.

As with other makers, Mr Boyle's recipe is a close-guarded secret.

Typically the Scottish national dish is a mixture of lungs, heart and liver of either a sheep or ox with grains and spices. All wrapped in a sheep or ox's stomach.

It is thought to have started in ancient Ro-

At Rob's British Butchery, it's sold either whole or sliced into 'burgers'. He introduces the taste to visitors with a bread-crumbed balls of the delicacy.

Then Mr Boyle breaks it to them that they've

just savoured some haggis.

It sells up a storm on St Andrews Day and Robbie Burns Day. The latter celebration marks the life of Scottish bard Robert Burns and lands on the day before Australia Day. It makes for a big weekend bringing Scots and Australians together, Mr Boyle says.

In England, haggis is apparently the hot item on restaurant menus.

"It's very versatile," Mr Boyle says. "And it makes a fantastic burger."

He describes his preferred 'Big Mac', and it's not for small stomachs. Slabs of haggis, black pudding, Scot sausage, potato scone, bacon and egg inside a burger roll.

"When we serve them up to someone, we say: 'Good luck!'"

Another idea is to add a slice of haggis and a bit of black pudding into a breakfast omelet.

“Unlike the North East Link, it will provide alternatives to driving a car and actually reduce traffic on our roads.”

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams cited the Government’s achievements such as Metro Tunnel, a series of level crossing removals, building railway station car parks and $200 million towards better bus networks.

“If the election is a referendum on delivering the public transport and road projects Victorians need - then Labor’s record is strong.”

Multinational grocery chain Kaufland claims its proposed Dandenong store will "co-exist" with smaller retailers and be a "winner" for local consumers.

Greater Dandenong Council is among the opponents of the planned outlet on the former Bunnings site on the corner of Gladstone Road and Princes Highway.

Small retailers in the nearby Hemmings and Menzies streets shopping strips fear that the outlet would destroy their businesses.

It has been described as being at least five times larger than a regular supermarket, but Kaufland denied its retail store and liquor outlet was a mega mall or "massive liquor outlet".

Within its 6000-square-metre operation, it will house four smaller local businesses including a food hall. The Kaufland outlets will take up nearly 4000-square metres.

"We welcome competition in all areas of the market as it forces all businesses to lift their game, and the consumer is the winner.

"Our history shows we can co-exist with smaller retailers.

"This is proven in our long history with independent retailers in Europe, where they have continued to grow despite our presence."

Independent supermarkets such as IGA

and FoodWorks have joined a Save Our Shops campaign calling for local councils to decide the planning application.

At the request of Kaufland, its proposed six outlets, including Dandenong, were instead called in by State Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

They will be heard by a state planning advisory committee, which will make recommendations to the Planning Minister of the day.

Kaufland stated that the planning process was "legitimate, transparent and accountable".

"This process allows any interested party to make a submission and seek to appear in front of an independent panel of experts.

"Kaufland is making significant investment and employment decisions for which it requires a degree of certainty that a traditional planning pathway through six individual councils could not provide."

Kaufland stated its "significant investment" at Dandenong would create jobs and opportunities for local businesses.

"We will be part of these communities for the long term, and we want to actively participate in community life."

The advisory committee hearings begin on 19 November.

The Greens have proposed a fast electric bus service that will whisk commuters from Dandenong to Melbourne’s east and north-east suburbs via EastLink.

The Rapid Bus Network service would travel from Dandenong Central to Austin Hospital in Heidelberg every 10 minutes on weekdays and 15 minutes on weekends.

It would stop at Caribbean Gardens, High Street Road, Burwood Highway and Heatherton station.

The journey would continue along Eastern Freeway to Middleborough Road, Westfield Doncaster, Bulleen Plaza, Heidelberg Station and Austin Hospital.

It was one of 11 rapid bus routes proposed for the North-East, East and South-East at $1.63 billion over 10 years.

Greens South-East Metro MP Nina Springle said the route would open up options for commuters crossing the eastern suburbs.

“Finally people can get from the southeast to the east and north east without having to go via the CBD. “This will do the heavy lifting to take more cars off the road during the morning and afternoon peak.”

The electric bus fleet would run on bus lanes and priority signalling. They will include free Wi-Fi and USB chargers, as well as bike racks and wheelchair spaces.

Ms Springle said the bus network could be rolled out within 18 months.

“It won’t take 10 years to build, like the North East Link mega toll road, or 30 years to

Weekend of our animal attractions The old and the new met in a packed program at the Dandenong Show on 10-11 November.

Harking back to the show's 147-year traditions were the traditional animal, arts, crafts and food competitions, along with shearing and milking demonstrations.

Tribute bridge

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A part-time World War II militia unit who went beyond the call of duty in New Guinea has been permanently honoured at a footbridge across Monash Freeway at Narre Warren.

The bridge at Prospect Hill Drive was renamed the Gippsland Regiment Bridge as part of a ceremony on Remembrance Day, 11 November.

The event included veterans and family from the Gippsland Regiment - otherwise known as the 52nd Battalion.

Organiser Kevin Walsh said it was fitting to recognise the regiment - a group that was formed and based in the Dandenong district.

The original battalion fought in the famous battle of Villers-Bretonneux on Anzac Day in 1918.

In World War II, the regiment’s members who were the equivalent of a part-time Army Reserve were called up to fight in desperate circumstances.

While the first-choice soldiers were engaged in Europe, the regiment was deployed to New Guinea to defend Australia from a Japanese onslaught .

“These guys served the community and were from the community,” Mr Walsh said.

“They came to the aid of the community in its hour of need.”

On the regiment’s return in 1944, its bravery was highlighted by the then-Army Minister Francis Forde.

Poppy tribute stands tall A spectacular wall of red poppies has been crafted by St Paul Apostle South Primary School in preparation for Remembrance Day. Staff and students hand-crafted poppies and pinned them to the wall as a special tribute to the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. The school is set to hold a special assembly on 12 November, hosting Vietnam War veteran Bill Rogers and Korean War veteran Les Hughes.

Young and old mark Great War’s end at peace memorial The crowd at Endeavour Hills peace memorial clasped red poppies for a Remembrance Day service marking 100 years since the end of World War I. Veterans as well as school students and politicians remembered those who died serving in

the 'Great War'.

The red poppies that grew on the Western Front battlefields are synonymous of the day.

The service was held by Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL at 11am on 8 November - three days before official Remembrance Day.

Diwali’s swirl of sounds Diwali Festival was marked with live music, Bollywood performances and delicious foods at Dandenong Market on 4 November.

Parents return to ‘fun’ school

It was all smiles at Dandenong South Primary School's recent 'Celebration of Learning' open afternoon.

Aimed at fostering relationships between the school and community, parents were invited to get a glimpse of their children's school life.

The day gave parents an opportunity to see some of their children's artwork. Children had the opportunity to tell parents about their dayto-day work.

Parents interacted with the teachers to see how the school was supporting the children's learning, with insight on how parents could help at home.

An Indonesian art display, student performances, a friendly soccer game and afternoon tea were also part of the afternoon.

"It was a successful event with outstanding attendance, we thank the parents and students who attended Celebration of Learning and were able to see our amazing school and celebrate the diversity," Dandenong South Primary School teacher Shams Osmani said.

Spoljaric keeps the runs flowing

By Nick Creely Crafting a century takes skill and application, as well as physical and mental fitness.

Yet DDCA legend Steven Spoljaric, the five time Wookey medalist and Ryder medal winner, makes them look so easy, as if he hasn’t even broken a sweat.

His 18th in the association (122) in just 97 games came on Saturday for Springvale South in Round 4 of the Turf 1 season, against a high quality Hallam Kalora Park bowling group, helping set up an imposing 312 for the Hawks to chase at Frawley Road. It was very much a classic Spoljaric knock - pushing singles early, being patient, and then accelerating like no other player in the competition.

After Michael Vandort was trapped LBW in the opening exchanges after some quality new ball bowling by Jordan Hammond, Spoljaric strode to the middle with his usual calmness.

Nathan King (39) took to the bowlers, allowing Spoljaric to work his way into the innings superbly. A double strike by Steven Gilmour (2/19) had the Bloods reeling at 3/61, but Spoljaric continued to play his way, constructing partnerships with Tim Ford (16) and Malinga Bandara (52) before going on and reaching the three figures in aggressive fashion.

Ironically, Spoljaric was run out on 122. In reality, it was the only way to nab his prized scalp. Some late runs by Jarrod Armitag (39 not out) saw the Bloods cross the 300 mark in a dominant day for Craig Slocombe’s side.

Down at Park Oval, Buckley Ridges flexed its muscle and inflicted North Dandenong with misery, wrapping up first innings points as it now eyes an outright. Winning the toss and batting proved to be the fateful call for skipper Asfan Thajudeen, with the Maroons succumbing to the new ball skill of Jurgen Andersen (5/29) and Daniel Watson (3/15). The visitors were rolled for just 51. Captain-coach David

White lost his wicket early, but the fireworks of Watson (34 off 22 balls) saw the Bucks quickly surpass the Maroons and build an impenetrable lead. Cameos by Troy Aust (55 not out) and fireworks by Ben Watson (54 not out off 21 balls) lifted the score to 6/205, with the Maroons reeling at 2/38 at stumps. Watson (2/3) has both the wickets in the second innings.

Star all-rounder Kaushalya Weeeraratne, meanwhile, had a day to remember as HSD flattened Berwick at Reedy. The highly fancied Bears were skittled for 106 in the 36th over after being sent in, with Weeraratne snaring 5/23.

The confidence seeped through with the bat as Weeraratne clubbed a stunning 109 not out, with the Cobras 4/190 at stumps. And Mordialloc’s (166) struggles continued despite a blazing 91 to new recruit, former international Nuwan Kulasekera, with St Mary’s 1/26 in a comfortable position to snare a victory at Carroll Reserve.

The Dandenong Rangers have slumped to their fourth consecutive WNBL loss, this time falling to the Adelaide Lightning on the road on Saturday night.

After starting the season with two promising wins, the Rangers have been unable to find their offensive rhythm since and now sit at 2-4 on the season.

Despite the best efforts of star guard Bec Cole, the Rangers were never in the contest against the Lightning.

Adelaide’s Lauren Nicholson caught fire in the opening quarter, draining four triples from four attempts and her team skipped away to a 27-16 lead at the first break.

Cole scored 10 of Dandenong’s 16 first-quarter points and was the only Ranger able to make inroads into the Lightning’s defence. Cole and Betnijah Laney kept the scoreboard ticking over in the opening stages of the second quarter, but Adelaide had all the answers.

When Nicole Seekamp hit a triple with just over three minutes remaining in the half, the Lightning had their biggest lead of the night, 48-29.

The Rangers headed into half-time with a 19-point deficit, 56-37.

Dandenong’s defence lifted after half time and they were able to get some stops on the defensive end, but this mattered little as their offence continued to struggle. Despite holding Adelaide to 19 points for the quarter, Dandenong managed just 16 of their own to see them trail by 22 points, 75-53, with a quarter to play. With the game all but over, Adelaide continued to control the game and cruised to a massive win, 99-74.

Cole (27 points and 3 assists) was the only constant for the Rangers on offence as she continued her strong form, while Laney (9 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists) was also impressive on both ends of the court.

Adelaide’s depth was too much for Dandenong as six players scored in double figures. Nia Coffey (21 points and 7 rebounds), Lauren Nicholson (20 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds) and Nicole Seekamp (17 points, 7 rebounds and 7 assists) were in devastating form for the Lightning.

Dandenong has a big weekend ahead - one that could make or break its season. Two road games; a Friday night battle with Bendigo and a match-up against Canberra on Sunday.

Two wins and Dandenong will be right back in the mix for finals, but if they drop both, finals will be an absolute long shot.

Panthers grind down Tigers at Shepley

By Nick Creely Dandenong’s relentlessness in the early stages of day two against the Monash Tigers meant the visitors were never really in with a shot in their Victorian Premier Cricket clash at Shepley Oval.

The reigning premiers climbed into seventh spot after six rounds, comfortably defending the formidable 309 they set.

Brett Forsyth (146 not out) - in game 200 went searching for quick runs as day two resumed on Saturday with the home still batting.

He launched some terrific shots before skipper Tom Donnell declared with one wicket left in the shed, ending the champion opener’s stunning innings - all 333 balls and almost seven hours of it.

It didn’t take long for James Wilcock (1/50) to get the new ball talking.

The Tigers tried to get the game on their terms, looking to push the ball into gaps with more force than they intended.

Because the Panthers bowled so tightly, and fielded with hunger, they blocked even the simplest of singles.

Despite looking set, Tigers skipper Dan Sartori (24) edged one off James Nanopoulos (3/36) to give the Panthers a second scalp.

Scott Edwards (29) and Sam Taylor (61) kept looking to move the game along, playing some lovely shots square of the wicket on the short side.

But wickets kept falling, halting them whenever they seemed to have just a sniff of momentum.

The Panthers once again proved why they are the reigning champs, with their ability to seize the big moments when they need to.

Wilcock’s back and firing in Panther land

By Nick Creely Dandenong quick James Wilcock admits that if he hadn’t stepped away from the rigours of Premier Cricket for a couple of years, he may have given it away completely.

With 135 first XI wickets for the Panthers after debuting at just 16 in the 2008/09 season, the now 26 year-old is a relative veteran of Premier Cricket, but chose to step away and return to his home club, Berwick, after snaring 27 wickets in 2015/16 for one simple reason.

“I was burnt out of cricket, really - playing Premier Cricket takes some time out of your life, and I played various junior tournaments and went to England for three years when I was young, and I got sick of it,” he said.

Clearly above the Dandenong District’s Turf 1 grade, netting 59 wickets at 13.35 in two seasons down at Berwick, Wilcock made the choice to return to Shepley Oval after the Panthers’ stunning premierships last year.

“I had a pretty good season at Berwick, and

“I absolutely loved it, off-field and on-field - with the team we had, it was probably disappointing to not even make the finals, but it is what I needed.”

Through injuries and availability, the former Victorian Under 17 and Under 19 representative has been thrust straight back into the thick of the action, taking the new ball for the Panthers to lead the attack, and described the “cut-throat” nature of Premier Cricket, something he is once again thriving off.

“It’s been pretty smooth (coming back to Dandenong), it does help that most of the guys around Dandenong are virtually the same, so that does help quite a lot,” he said.

“It’s a different level of cricket, so it’s taken a bit of time on the cricket side of it - it’s just that bit better and getting use to bowling to better batsmen. If you miss a training session or two, you feel a bit guilty, because there is guys in the twos that want to take your place - even me, you feel like you’ve been going well and guys like Peter Siddle and James Pattinson come back in and you quickly find yourself in the twos. North Dandenong prodigy Yash Pednekar is an exceptional talent, a class batsman with maturity, composure and a willingness to always better himself.

It’s a view shared by Cricket Australia’s youth selection panel, who view the not yet 17-year-old as one of the brightest stars in the country.

As one of 39 youngsters from around the country - and one of just seven Victorians - selected in the CA Pathways Rookie Squad in the 2018 intake, Pednekar is carving out runs, but has a humility about him that will hold him in good stead. Put simply, he understands that the hard work is ahead of him.

“It really motivates me, and it’s always good to be recognised,” he told the Journal of his selection in the Rookie Squad.

“It’s like your living the dream, but you’re not quite there yet, so it makes you push that little bit harder.”

Based off form in the carnival and a view to future talent in the country, the program saw two Victorians - Patrick Rowe and Mackenzie Harvey, as well as Queensland’s Connor Sully from last year’s squad - earning rookie contracts with their state.

“Wherever it takes me, whether that’s first XI cricket, state cricket or international cricket, I want to enjoy my cricket and trust my process,” Pednekar said.

The classy top-order batsman is plying his trade for Premier club Monash Tigers, as he prepares for the Under 19 National Championships in Adelaide that begin on 3 December, and said that he is just looking to put some runs on the board, and continue to develop his game.

Pednekar has carved scores of 40 and 60 in recent weeks in the thirds down at Central Reserve, and said that the confidence is growing

Latest Kia Rio features major changes under the skin.

Kia Rio competes in one of the most hardfought sales segments in Australia so it made sense to give a full-on revamp with major mechanical changes to give it more weapons to fight with.

The entry level Rio S is unchanged, with a 1.4-litre petrol engine mated to either a sixspeed manual or four-speed automatic.

Much bigger news is that the Rio Si and SLi models have been replaced by a new Kia Rio Sport. It has 17-inch alloy wheels and, importantly, a six-speed automatic that replaces the four-speed.
