Remembrance Day this year takes on an added significance, with the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice which ended the First World War. The tragedy of that Armistice is that it made the Second World War virtually inevitable. While the heavy terms imposed on Germany no doubt seemed fair at the time, the unintended consequence was that those terms deeply embittered the German people, who not so long afterwards turned to Hitler.

But a greater tragedy - at least for us in Australia - was the generation of young men who lost their lives between 1914 and 1918, both in battle and afterwards through injuries, both physical and mental.

At the end of the day, it was a war which had nothing to do with Australia.

It was a European conflict we were dragged into through a naive loyalty to the British Empire, and countless young Australian men - some of them only boys - believed they were heading off on the adventure of a lifetime.

We cannot change history, but we must remember and commemorate the terrible loss of promising lives. So, 'Promise to Pause' this Sunday, at 11am.

CREEK OVERFLOW INVESTIGATED

BY JEREMY SOLLARS The Queensland Department of Environment and Science (DES) is investigating the latest release of sewage effluent into Stanthorpe's Quart Pot Creek on Friday 26 October.

The overflow occurred after heavy rain that week, with the Southern Downs Regional Council blaming illegal plumbing connections at Stanthorpe residences for channelling excess stormwater into the sewage treatment plant.

But as reported in the Free Times in February of this year the council could face a maximum State Government fine of close to $4 million as a result of similar accidental sewage discharges into Quart Pot Creek over the past two years.

Documents obtained by the Free Times under Right To Information (RTI) showed at least 106 megalitres of effluent flowed into the creek from the treatment plant between July 2016 and April 2017, with the amounts released during some overflow "events" recorded as "unknown".

The RTI material also showed the effluent overflows were caused by equipment failures at the treatment plant which were brought to the attention of senior council officers but were not promptly rectified.

Instead council management blamed

Quart Pot Creek. communication errors by staff on the ground for at least some of the discharges.

Investigations by DES into all of the discharges - including the most recent - are ongoing, with the council having been given until early 2019 to demonstrate how it plans to fix the problem.

In January 2017 the council was fined

$12,190 for effluent releases between 15 and 18 July 2016.

The overflow problems are related to a move by the council to tear up contracts with local irrigators who have been supplied with treated wastewater from the Stanthorpe Sewage Treatment Plant for some years.

The council is attempting to secure new

users for increased recycled water through a tender process, in the hope that it will reduce the amount of water kept in storage at the treatment plant.

But the irrigators have taken the council to court over the cancelled contracts which they maintain are still effective, an action which could also be costly for the council.

The council also plans to build a second effluent storage dam at the Stanthorpe STP which it hopes will help prevent future overflows, particularly during high rainfall.

In relation to the most recent overflow on 26 October a DES spokesman said the department "understands that council has placed signs at the creek to notify the public of this matter".

"DES has previously issued a statutory notice to council requiring that they investigate the management of treated effluent from the sewage treatment plant at Stanthorpe.

"The investigation of this latest incident will focus on the specific factors which led to the release.

"If necessary, DES will take action to ensure legal obligations are being met in line with the Environmental Protection Act 1994.

"DES has a range of enforcement options available if required once its investigation has been completed." ●

BYPASS PLAN IS OUTLINED A new traffic bypass planned for the eastern side of Warwick is being touted as improving road safety and access to farming areas for heavy vehicles including B-Doubles.

The Southern Downs Regional Council says a Federal Government grant of $395,000 will upgrade 2.6km of roads and intersections and is expected to be completed in April 2020.

A council spokesman this week said design work was being done "from the East Street/Ogilvie Road Intersection, east along Ogilvie Road to the intersection with Freestone Road, and then south along Depot Road to the Warwick-Yangan Road, including all above intersections".

"The upgrades will create a bitumen twolane roadway.

"Preliminary design works have commenced and works are expected to be

completed by end of April 2020."

A 'concept approval' document prepared by council officers states the project "will commence the opening up of B double access to the farming communities that range from the Cunningham Highway to the Condamine River, taking in localities such as Junabee, Emu Vale, Tannymorel, Swanfels, and Freestone".

"This will allow for more freight and the efficient movement of stock and grain," the document states.

"The background stems from community engagement with stakeholders on the 15 February 2017 (when) the Mayor held a workshop to discuss with industry the requirements to be able to get better B Double access into our region.

"Currently one of the largest deficiencies is B Double access from the Cunningham Highway near Warwick via Warwick Yangan and Freestone Road, which are all under

jurisdiction of Main Roads.

"This project is about preparing a concept, planning, design, and some construction for a route from the Caltex service station on the Cunningham Highway through to Freestone Road and Warwick Yangan Road.

"To also be considered as part of this project is the proposed solar farm in East Street and development conditions requiring the upgrade of the East Street to bitumen standard.

"Also Council currently has a betterment project in with NDRRA (Federal Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements) awaiting approval for upgrade of Depot Road.

"A significant choice of the route will include liaison with Main Roads about their requirements and also the running of B Doubles past housing developments.

"The preferred concept will be a route

his Sunday, 11 November, Australians are being asked to "Promise to Pause" and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War, which ended a century ago.

At the time it was to be "The war to end all wars" - but tragically, not only did the terms of the Armistice lay the foundation for the Second World War, Australians have fought and died in countless overseas conflicts since.

Remembrance Day services will be held across the Southern Downs and Granite Belt regions on Sunday and veterans like John Skinner are urging local people to take a short time out of their weekend to help commemorate the fallen.

The current president of the Warwick RSL Sub-Branch, John is a Vietnam veteran who to this day carries the physical and mental scars of battle - including a bullet still lodged in his leg, and the nightmares.

"It's hard for us now to understand how Australia lost 62,000 men - and 25 nurses killed during World War One, yet alone to understand how almost double that number died of wounds or mental illness in the two years after they came home," John told the Free Times this week.

"To remember their sacrifice and pay tribute to them as well as the other 40,000 Australians who died in following wars, is what Remembrance Day is all about.

"We lost a whole generation of young men between 1915 and the end of the war on November 11, 1918.

"Remembrance Day is no longer our most revered day, ANZAC Day is, and yet it signifies one of the greatest days in our history, the day peace came to Europe and our men were able to start coming home.

"If all we do is stand still for one minute at 11am on November 11 and remember their sacrifice, what a tribute that is.

"I was young and full of enthusiasm and courage when I left Australia for Vietnam.

"I soon learned the error when I saw two close mates killed beside me and another who died a day later.

"The effects of war have never left me even though it was 50 years ago, I still have dreams reliving the horrors.

"The physical wounds I suffered, the mental wounds and the skin rashes are daily reminders.

"It makes it easier for me to understand how those first ANZACs suffered after three years on the Western Front from 1916."

SOLDIER SETTLERS HONOURED ...

As well as the service at Stanthorpe's Weeroona Park, those on the Granite Belt will also have the opportunity to attend an event organised by the Amiens History Association.

Spokeswoman Heather Dux said this Sunday 11 November is of "particular significance" to the various soldiers' settlements in Australia as it heralded the

influx of over 20,000 returned soldiers into the settlements.

"They, along with their families, had accepted the challenges of farming life after the war," Heather said.

"Amiens was the headquarters of the Pikedale soldiers' settlement and on Remembrance Day the Amiens History Association will hold an event to remember the legacy of the soldier settlers in the Granite Belt region.

"The event features the unveiling by State MP for Southern Downs James Lister of a memorial to soldier settler families sculpted

by Gabriele Trabucco.

"There will also be a re-enactment of the signing of the Armistice in a period railway carriage by students of Amiens State School, and recognition of the links to our friends in France and Belgium, with whom we share the village and locality names of Fleurbaix, Pozieres, Bullecourt, Bapaume, Amiens and the Somme in France and Messines and Passchendaele in Belgium.

THE AUSSIES' PART ...

Sunday 11 November 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the Armistice which ended the First World War (1914-18).

One hundred years ago, on 11 November 1918, the guns of the Western Front fell silent after four years of continuous warfare.

With their armies retreating and close to collapse, German leaders signed an Armistice, bringing to an end the First World War. From the summer of 1918, the five divisions of the Australian Corps had been at the forefront of the allied advance to victory. Beginning with their stunning success at the battle of Hamel in July, they helped to turn the tide of the war at Amiens in August, followed by the capture of Mont St Quentin and Pèronne, and the breaching of German defences at the Hindenburg Line in September.

By early October the exhausted Australians were withdrawn from battle.

They had achieved a fighting reputation out of proportion to their numbers, but victory had come at a heavy cost. They suffered almost 48,000 casualties during 1918, including more than 12,000 dead.

In the four years of the war more than 330,000 Australians had served overseas, and more than 60,000 of them had died.

The social effects of these losses cast a long shadow over the postwar decades.

Dear Editor, One hundred years ago, on 11 November 1918, the Armistice that ended the fighting during the First World War was signed with Germany.

After more than four years of brutal fighting in the most destructive war the modern world had seen, the guns fell silent, and people around the world rejoiced.

But it came at a great cost, and for Australia, of the some 416,000 who enlisted for service more than 60,000 died the effects of which were felt in every community, large and small, around the country.

In the years that followed the war, 11 November was known as Armistice Day and two minutes of solemn silence was observed at 11am. Today, 11 November is known as Remembrance Day, and it stands as the day we remember the men and women who have suffered and died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations over a century of service. This Remembrance Day, I urge all Australians in communities across the nation to wear a red Flanders Poppy and to stop for a minute's silence to remember these brave men and women.

We should also remember those who returned home carrying with them the scars of their service, and the family members who cared for them. And we thank those currently serving in the Australian Defence Force and on peacekeeping operations.

As a nation we should all show our gratitude for the sacrifice of those who have bravely served and died. For a century we have remembered them and we will ensure they are remembered still.

A chance meeting in a Warwick paint shop has opened the doors to an exciting Glengallan Homestead project with a generous donation by wood care specialists Sikkens of enough product to refurbish all of the exterior cedar doors at the iconic heritage house near Warwick on the Southern Downs.

Site manager Terry Weier was looking for a suitable timber coating for sun-damaged exterior French doors when he chanced upon Sikkens Queensland representative Margie Crawford who was immediately enthused by the Glengallan project, as were her employers.

Margie was back at Glengallan in October to deliver drums of Sikkens timber cleaning and coating product, together with special applicators, ready for the door refurbishment project which will start next month.

This is only the third time in living memory that the precious local cedar has received specialist attention.

In the mid-1990s, woodwork was removed from the derelict house to be restored by then Glengallan Homestead Trust chairman, retired French polisher the late Bill White, with the assistance of the Warwick Women in Custody program.

NDIS EXPLAINED AT THIS FORUM Do you have questions or want to know more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)?

Maranoa MP David Littleproud will hold an NDIS community information and question-and-answer forum in Warwick next Thursday 15 November.

The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). Staff from the NDIA will attend the forum to listen and offer assistance about the Southern Downs rollout.

"The NDIS is the largest social reform since Medicare," Mr Littleproud said.

"I'm holding this session to give our community a chance to speak with the NDIA and hopefully iron out any kinks.

"It's a once-in-a-generation landmark reform and the NDIS is making a real difference, especially in rural communities like ours.

"I believe one of the biggest tragedies for our rural communities is when a loved one is forced to move away - move to a larger town or city, away from family and everything they've ever known - to receive care.

"The NDIS rollout is making a difference to this."

NEXT ROUND OF BAITING Southern Downs Regional Council is encouraging the region's farmers to bait for wild dogs.

The council provides free 1080 wild dog baiting services to landholders in the Southern Downs region, and undertakes four to six coordinated programs per year.

Landholders can also request reactive baiting.

Councillor for Agriculture, Environment and Sustainability Cameron Gow said regular, coordinated 1080 baiting is the most effective wild dog control method.

"Council's regular ground baiting program when coupled with trapping and shooting has seen wild dog numbers reduce drastically in the region where the program has taken place," Cr Gow said.

"In September, Council conducted another round of our coordinated ground baiting programs across the Southern Downs.

"During the latest round, Council also deployed approximately 25,000 baits in inaccessible areas using a helicopter."

Local landholder Paul Maher helps coordinate dog baiting for local farmers, and says wild dog attacks are a problem in the region.

"I see dogs on my property regularly, and have had problems with dogs attacking cattle in the past," Mr Maher said.

"From my own experience, I know that baiting along with trapping and shooting works to control dogs, and I tell other farmers to do the same."

SDRC, along with the Toowoomba and Goondiwindi Regional Councils, receives funding through the Queensland Feral Pest Initiative (QFPI) to undertake strategic wild dog baiting across the region.

Council's next round of coordinated wild dog, fox and feral pig baiting will run from next Wednesday 14 November to Friday 16 November.

Council also conducts landholder training and planning through funding and support from the QFPI and Granite Borders Landcare Committee.

The Southern Downs Regional Council announced in late October it will seek to sell off environmental approvals it owns for the proposed Emu Swamp Dam near Stanthorpe to the highest bidder.

This is despite Queensland law allowing the council to "gift" the approvals to a non-profit group - such as the Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce which is preparing a detailed business case for the dam, with completion expected by the end of November.

The Chamber hopes the business case will assist in securing State and Federal funding for the new dam - but it needs to have the environmental approvals in its possession. It is unclear who else would bid for the approvals, but that hasn't stopped the council issuing the tender. Here Stanthorpe resident AMANDA HARROLD shares her views on the situation ...

To all levels of government, please hear our plea - we are asking for a hand up and not a hand out.

The Southern Downs has moved into high water restrictions and has over one year of water left. We are concerned for our water security in the short term, but also in the long term as the drought conditions worsen and the population grows we are facing a water crisis.

This is not the first time that Stanthorpe has faced the possibility of running out of water. In the last drought, the town had two weeks of water left and was on the verge

of buying in water at a huge expense to ratepayers.

Luck was on our side and it rained and Storm King Dam was filled. We cannot cross our fingers and hope that this happens again - we need to have a strategy in place to secure our water, not just for the town but for the farmers as well.

Agriculture is the major source of employment in the region and is historically vulnerable to drought. Identifying appropriate strategies to meet urban and irrigation needs is critical to our economic sustainability and liveability.

OPINION decision has outraged the community as the money expended towards this project was sourced via grant money, ratepayers' money and private money contributed by the Stanthorpe Community Reference Panel.

The approvals have already been paid for by the community and it is disappointing that this community will have to again pay for something it already owns. The real danger however is that the approvals will expire in April 2019 and for the Coordinator General to extend the approvals again, the owner (ie council) will have to prove that they have carried out works as part of the approvals.

The Granite Belt community is one that does not shy away from a challenge but accepts it and contributes towards making things happen. The community has a long history of raising money for much needed infrastructure and has always had a willingness to work with all levels of government for the betterment of the town.

At this stage, local farmers have indicated they are willing to put $24 million dollars towards this project to drought-proof their farms. Other benefits include the creation of 700 hundred jobs and an injection of $70 million dollars into the local economy.

So to our leaders - hear our plea for a hand up and not a hand out. All levels of government and the community can all work together to deliver this life-changing project if common sense, decency and honour come to the fore. All parties need to come to the table and make this project happen because we can no longer ignore this water crisis, the time to act is NOW. ● Amanda Harrold Stanthorpe

TORNADO REMEMBERED The Killarney and District Historical Society is commemorating the 60th anniversary of the tornado which devastated the town on 22 November 1968.

OUT-OF-COURT The Southern Downs Regional Council has paid an out-of-court settlement of more than $236,000 to a former Stanthorpe Shire Council employee who sued both the council and the former James Hardie company after being diagnosed with mesothelioma.

The quarterly human resources report submitted to the September meeting of the council outlined the settlement amount but did not detail the circumstances in which the former employee contracted the disease, which is associated with asbestos exposure.

“Early this year Council was served with a claim from a former Stanthorpe Shire employee who was diagnosed with mesothelioma,” the report stated.

“This was a joint claim served on both Council and Amaca (formerly James Hardie).

“The claim was settled in September 2018 with Council required to pay the claimant the amount of $236,906.25.”

GAP CLOSURES The Cunningham Highway at Cunninghams Gap will continue to be closed between 7am to 9am and 1pm to 3pm daily until and inclusive of this Saturday 10 November.

Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) contractors have spent this week carrying out works on the cliff-faces above the road, including stabilisation of large boulders and removal of loose debris as a result of torrential rain associated with Cyclone Debbie in early 2017. ● 12400070-RA39-18

Our council has stated that it aims to develop a strategy to ensure a secure urban water supply is provided for Stanthorpe and other parts of the region. One strategy is a pipeline from Warwick's Connolly Dam to Storm King Dam. At present Connolly Dam has 14 months of water and Storm King has 13 months. The cost of building a pipeline from Connolly Dam to Storm King Dam - which will be over 40km long through private land and granite rock - will be in the vicinity of $25 million dollars, not to mention the enormous cost of the energy requirements to pump the water uphill. The cost for this option will be the responsibility of council and the ratepayers. Piping water from Connolly Dam will not be providing a new water source, just moving water from one district to another. Given that Connolly Dam has only one month more water available than Stanthorpe, how is this a sensible option?

There is an alternative solution in Emu Swamp Dam. The Stanthorpe and Granite Belt Chamber of Commerce gallantly took over this project and is completing the Detailed Business Case after council declared it was not financially viable. The Chamber has managed to turn this dam into a viable project and it is now solely an irrigation project. However, there is the potential to be able to supply 450 ML of emergency urban water at no capital cost to ratepayers.

This project is at risk due to a number of issues including the transfer of the Environmental Approvals which council has put out to tender to recoup costs incurred of $1.5 million dollars. This

The $36.1 million expansion of the Churches of Christ site in Warwick's west was completed in recent months and new aged care residents are progressively moving into their new home.

For those living in care meals are always one of the highlights of the day and as well as being appetising and nutritious, they also need extra special care and preparation.

William Briese is the executive chef - well, he rather modestly calls himself the 'kitchen manager' - for the aged care residents and he is happily settling into his new role.

While he's used to catering for large numbers - the Jandowae-born and selfdescribed proud "country boy" previously fed as many as 1500 in mining camps out west, along with students at Ipswich Grammar School - this is his first venture into aged care and he concedes he's been on a bit of a learning curve.

Regency Park's nursing home has a full capacity of 128 residents and William and his small team are passionate about delivering quality food tailored to their individual needs.

The day in the kitchen starts around 7.30am with breakfast 'prep' and along with lunch and dinner the menu will be regularly rotated, including seasonally every four months.

William with a few samples of kitchen staples at Regency Park. textured food is shaped to present as "real" as possible.

Residents are offered a variety of options for all three meals and William and the team source as many of their fresh ingredients as they can from local suppliers.

LOVING CARE There's also a barbecue in the main courtyard where residents and their loved ones can enjoy eating outdoors with the barbie tucker cooked up by William and his staff.

Taste and presentation are important but so is texture, with different residents requiring different levels of softness and pureeing in their meals - indeed there's even a special 'grading' system in that department.

The kitchen team uses plastic moulds to shape pureed food items so they look as "natural" or "real" as possible, so residents can realistically enjoy things like cheese and crackers, mini pizzas and beef sliders, as well as fresh meat and veggies.

More than anything, William is delighted with the ultra-modern kitchen itself.

"It's the first kitchen I've ever worked in where everything is brand new," he laughed.

"It's a long way from cooking for guys on the gas fields out of a semi-trailer.

"What we use here is a system produced by a French company called Burlodge.

"It's used in large environments like hospitals and basically it allows us to preprepare meals a couple of days in advance but still keep them fresh by using blast chilling.

"The system is fully computerised and auto-programmed - to be honest it took me a couple of days to figure it all out, but once I got the hang of it it's worked brilliantly." â—?

INQUEST DATES SET A Coroner’s inquest into the fatal police shooting of a man at Freestone in November 2016 will begin at the Toowoomba Courthouse on Monday 10 December.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the death of 65 year old Russell Winks on his Charleys Gully Road property on Thursday 17 November 2016.

A pre-inquest conference held in Brisbane last week heard Mr Winks became involved in a confrontation with police called to the property by his wife on that day.

The conference heard Mr Winks allegedly threatened the police with a firearm before being fatally shot by officers.

The inquest is listed for hearing over three days.

The Coroner’s Court online entry for the inquest states it will seek to establish if the “police use of lethal force against Mr Winks was in accordance with the Queensland Police Service ‘use of force’ policy in the Operational Procedures Manual at the time”.

The inquest will also investigate if there were “any ‘less than lethal’ use of force options open to the officers which they did not take, whether the investigation by Ethical Standards Command was appropriate and sufficient and whether there are any

further recommendations which can be made which could prevent deaths from happening in similar circumstances in the future”.

NAURU VIGIL A ‘Kids Off Nauru” prayer vigil will be held at Warwick’s St Mark’s Anglican Church tomorrow night, Friday 9 November, from 5.30pm to 6.45pm.

The Vigil has been organised by Love Makes a Way, with Common Grace, Australian Churches Refugee Taskforce, World Vision and Micah Australia as part of the #KidsOffNauru campaign.

The Southern Downs Refugee and Migrant Network will hold a ‘Sunset Spring Friendship Picnic by the River’ event next to the Condamine River in Federation Park in Warwick - near Tiddalik - on Sunday 19 November from 4pm to 6pm. More details on the Network’s Facebook page.

STILL PROCEEDING The owner of the vacant block at the corner of Fitzroy and Albion Streets in Warwick says his development plans for the site are still progressing.

Brisbane-based developer John Kearney gained council approval in 2016 for a 550sqm building and a

300sqm building on the site to be developed as a combination of retail, medical and office space and a food outlet.

The land is situated next to the building housing Burson Auto Parts and the former Warwick Daily News offices.

Mr Kearney said the development was progressing “slowly” as he is focusing on other projects at this time, but said he was still in talks with potential future tenants.

DUMPERS CAUGHT The Southern Downs Regional Council is investigating a case of illegal dumping near Leyburn.

A council statement said “individuals dumped two separate loads of concrete pads and blocks, metal piping and turf off-cuts along Benson Road on or around Friday 26 October”.

“Local residents reported the incident to Council and reported that the dumping had damaged a property fence in the area,” the statement said.

HEAVY METAL LADIES’ WEEKEND A group of local women attended the firstever women's blacksmithing workshop in Warwick recently.

Wayne Cottee - blacksmithing enthusiast and owner of Warwick Automatic Transmission Service - facilitated the workshop and will hold a similar event for the blokes only in December.

Workshop participant Sue Keong said everyone had a great time.

"Some of the girls had worked metal before but this was the first time for most to use the forge," Sue told the Free Times.

Mary Donnelly said it was a "very satisfying weekend".

"We made new friends and learnt new skills," she said.

"Great facilities and an excellent tutor Couldn't have asked for better!"

Jane Milliken agreed, saying blacksmithing "takes a lot of arm power and breath, great for toning them both".

"Though pretty much we were breathless by day's end we were thrilled with what we hand- wrought, and that each participant finished their items," Jane said.

Diane Lawler said the "camaraderie of all the ladies made the weekend most enjoyable, especially as we had not met prior to the course".

"Everyone was generous with their time and support to assist with various procedures throughout the activities."

NEWS BUSY AT ALLORA MEN’S SHED

FOOTY FANS HELP OUT THE BUSH The coast met the country when the Gold Coast Titans delivered $12,000 worth of drought relief supplies to Warwick last Thursday 1 November.

Second rower Will Matthews and club officials made the trip over the range and handed over both horse and calf feed manufactured by Riverina in Warwick.

The horse pellets went to non-profit group Riding For The Disabled which runs

riding programs for disabled children at the Warwick Showgrounds between the Show and the Rodeo each year, using locallyowned ponies.

Local dairy farmers were the recipients of calf pellets which were gratefully accepted.

The Titans raised the money from fans at their last home game of the season this year against the Brisbane Broncos, from gold coin donations and memorabilia auctions. ●

GARDEN ‘LEFT TO OWN DEVICES’ As readers of this column will know I was away for a good many weeks and my garden was left to its own devices. You can imagine how delighted I was when I arrived home to find hippeastrums in full flower, red peony poppies absolutely flourishing and spaces filled by alyssum and white daisies. Some hardy petunias I had put in before I left were also flourishing and large clumps of Jacobean lilies were flowering beautifully.

'Black and Bloom' salvia, lavender and some vincas that had survived the winter all added colour.

The snail plant on the back fence is growing very rapidly and about the end of November it will get a tip prune to encourage flowering.

The peony poppies that I grew last year from seed my granddaughter sent me years ago from WA had self-seeded and once again they are all big, beautiful, vibrant, red ones! Not an original pink one to be seen!

I "Googled" them and have found that they are available in a wide range of colours - white, black, pinks of various shades, lilac through to deep purple and even yellow - so I have ordered some other colours ready for next year. They certainly put on a great show and are so easy to grow that they are an ideal plant for my garden! They are frost hardy and obviously do well on neglect! Red looks wonderful on its own but a variety of colours, especially the addition of white and black would look spectacular.

They are known by a variety of names

- lettuce leaf poppies, bread seed poppies and opium poppies, but don't panic, as they are a low morphine variety and quite legal I am told by the experts. If in doubt, ignorance is bliss. Just don't harvest and sell the seed! They are an annual and need cold to germinate, so sowing in autumn or late winter directly where they are to flower seems to get the best results. I have found they don't respond well to transplanting. I have also found that, unlike other poppies, if you dead-head them at the junction of the leaves below the spent flower, they will send up another flower. They are not good

as a cut flower as they do not last but look spectacular for a short while. I have found that if you pick them very early in the morning as the bud just starts to split, they will last about two days.

It is a delight to go out early and see the number of bees that flock to each newly opened bloom. I have never seen so many bees on a single bloom. A truly magical sight.

I hope you were able to see some of the floral window displays that were evident over the Rodeo Weekend. Thank you to the many businesses that participated and provided additional colour to our town.

Now for a little garden philosophy that I have come across and which I find applies to me: My garden is a bit like some children - a little wild, hard to contain and control, but it makes me smile! I spend days, weeks and money trying to grow plants and weeds do it all by themselves for free! If you come across something you don't recognise in the garden and can't decide whether it's a weed or something valuable that has come up, I have found a sure fire way to help you make the decision. Grab it firmly by the top and pull - if it comes out easily you should have left it alone and it will not take well to replanting.

If it resists all attempts to pull it out you can bet money on it that you really don't want it to continue to grow!

Gardens are a thing of beauty and a job forever.

If you have some time to spare and really want to treat yourselves over the weekend of the 17th and 18th of November head to Killarney to visit two beautiful gardens.

The extensive Hoffman family garden will be open to the public as will be Annette Russell's spectacular rose garden.

Sue's garden won the "garden on acreage" section and Champion Garden in the recent Warwick Horticultural Society garden competition and, despite the recent hailstorm, has continued to flourish and will be a delight to all who take the time to visit.

Both of these are on the Queen Mary Falls road from town and are well sign-posted. ●

THE SPIN

CUP AND CRICKET DOMINATE THE WEEK As this edition is finalised I have one eye on the Melbourne Cup telecast and the form guide for the Cup in the hope that the winner jumps off the page and finds me. I hope your pick was one that has an affinity for wet weather.

Last Saturday was certainly a spectacular start to the Melbourne Spring Carnival with some sensational racing and there is of course much more to come.

By the time this edition hits your front lawn we will all know if Magic Circle has allowed his flamboyant owner Dr Marwan Koukash to make good on his promise of some post-race hi-jinks by accepting the Melbourne Cup trophy in a G-string , or being carted out of the mounting yard by security. It would be just another chapter in Melbourne Cup history.

Whether we are cheering home Magic Circle or any one of the other 23 runners it will be far more memorable and less painful even if you have not backed the winner than watching the Australian Cricket team self-destruct in Perth on Sunday night.

It was a performance that could only be described as cringeworthy. I fear we as Aussie supporters are going to be getting used to the flavour of humble pie for some time to come.

I doubt I can honestly find one highlight in the whole sorry game. If pressed it was good to see Chris Lynn make it through the game unscathed by injury. Now if he could just hold on to his wicket a little longer and score a few more runs it would be helpful to say the least.

Australian Coach Justin Langer, who had the honour of having a grandstand named after him prior to the game, must be seriously wondering what he has taken on. He has however urged fans to stick by the side, believing a win is not far off ever the optimist.

The one real treat in the game was the return of Dale Steyn to the international arena. In his mid-thirties and returning from serious shoulder injury he was simply fantastic.

It has been a week to forget all round for Australian Cricket. The Chairman of CA David Peever bowed to pressure and stepped down. On Monday longtime board member and former Aussie captain Mark Taylor also resigned from the board. Taylor was touted as a possible replacement for Peever and with his resignation the chasm between board and players may just have widened a little more, if that is possible.

Humble pie - it's not something we as fans are accustomed to but before the debacle that is Australian cricket is resolved we will all be accustomed to the flavour.

Casey GOLD MEDAL WINNERS DECIDED The Stanthorpe 2018 Golf Medal of Medallists competition was decided on Saturday. Winners of the Men's and Ladies Monthly Medal from throughout the year played for the "Gold Medal" Trophy and title of Medal of Medallists.

After an extraordinary round of 77 Gross, Nett 65 Junior golfer Billy Webb added the Roy Carnell Trophy to his list of achievements this season.

The talented youngster has also just earned his promotion to A Grade.

Tom Donald was in great form last weekend, pictured firing his 20g coach gun with brass cartridges loaded with black powder. in the Ladies competition. In an exciting finish Neta Thouard and Kay Webb each returned a nett score of 77.

After a tense count back it was Neta Thouard who was declared the winner of the event sponsored by Tom and Trish Fittock.

The November monthly medal was also held on the day, and as winners of the November Medal Stroke event both Webb and Thouard are the first qualifiers for the 2019 Medal of Medallists event The Runners up were Bill Pyne with nett 67 and Kay Webb with nett 70. Mark Hendry returned the best Gross (75) in the Men's event and Neta Thouard (95) in the Ladies. Putting honours went to Billy Webb and Mark Hendry with 26 putts and Kay Webb led the Ladies with 28 putts.

Greenkeeper Bill Pyne, read the green well at three holding the pin shot. Aaron Simmers claimed the pin at 12 and Trevor Ludlow held 17. Matt Waterworth held the pro-pin at 1/10, Hayden Smith at 5/14 and Mike McAuliffe at 9/18. Lorraine Evans had best ladies' approach at 17.In the run downs; it was a ball to scores of nett 70 and better.

The monthly medal event was sponsored by long-time supporters of the Stanthorpe Golf Club, Howard and Adele Poole of Poole's Produce.

This Saturday players will be hoping for a reprieve from the very hot conditions as they head out to play a mixed 4BBB Stableford for the Peirce Trophy sponsored by the Peirce family.

DONALD HOT ON THE RANGE Sunday proved to be a red hot day for hot shots on the range in Inglewood.

Single action was the first event and Tom Donald continued his winning form when he outscored Craig Pilon and Craig Rowley.

The Pistol event was a Rimfire event and there were 12 eager competitors on deck.

Once again it was Tom Donald who was on fire in the 30 round National Match Course.

Ray and Stephanie Dudgeon filled the minor placings After the lunch break a five stand shotgun competition was won by Terry Fairbanks. In this event it was Stephanie and Michael Dudgeon who filled the placings.

During the lunch break members a short meeting to discuss the upcoming Zone Two Gallery Rifle Championships which will be held on the range on Sunday November 18.

A 90 round match using centrefire rifles chambered for pistol rounds, e.g. 32/20, 38/40/ .38, .357. 44/40 etc.

The range will be open on Saturday for practice from10.00 am. There will be a dinner Saturday night ($15.00pp).

Bookings for the dinner are essential for to assist with catering for catering purposes. Overnight camping will be available and it is building as a fun shoot.

LEOTTA AS SPORTERS RETURN Sporters were back in action last Sunday after a Sunday off due to the recent Stanthorpe Golf Open. Paul Leotta played well notching up a win. An eagle at was not enough to get Norm Steele the win but he did claim the runners up spot and the Pro Pin. Matt Waterworth returned the Best Gross score of the round. The run-downs went to Jim Mitchell and Terry Byrnes.

Ian Anderson was on song at the third and claimed the Pin Shot. Cody Leotta and Mark Lynam did not go home empty handed either. Each left with a meat Tray. Sporters will tee off at the usual time on Sunday 7.308.00am.

PLENTY TO DO FOR MALLET PLAYERS Another busy week for the Stanthorpe Mallet players got underway on Tuesday with the Association Croquet games.

Playing singles Carol Verwey had three breaks of two hoops in a game against and Grace Howard. Although Howard played well and had a break of four hoops her opponent won the game 26-21, Pat Schnoor partnered Val Shephard against Jenny Tunbridge who played very well. Schnoor had two peels in the game but breaks of three and two consecutive breaks of two hoops saw Tunbridge score a 24-21 win.

Andrea Denkewitz partnered Peter Tunbridge against Joy Newman and Effey Russell. Joy played well and despite scoring two breaks of three hoops Denekwitz and Tunbridge secured a comprehensive 23-14 victory.

It was a visitor's day out with Roser and her partner winning 26-24.

John Draper partnering Andrea Denkewitz played Bron Southgate and Peter Tunbridge and at the end of an interesting game scored a 22-14 win.

Two full teams played Gateball on Friday.

In the opening game, a low scoring event, it was Team Two (Bill Golding, Pat Schnoor, Joy Newman, Heather Widderick and Jenny Tunbridge) who took the early bragging honours winning 9-7 after Golding hit two balls through gate three on his last turn to secure the win Their opponents (Denkewitz, Grace Howard, Val Fancourt, John Draper and Sharyn Roser) hit back in the second game to score a 12-10 on the back of an Agari from Sharon Roser.

Team one came out firing after the break with Grace Howard helping her team to a win by scoring two Agari's. John Draper also played very well in this game as the team scored a 16-11 win.

Team Two evened the ledger in the final game. The highlight of the game was an Agari

by Pat Schnoor but the entire team played well as they notched up a 13-10 win.

Ben Heppell had Morgan Bourke caught and bowled in the second over after as Colts woes continued. He then dismissed Tom Fearne cheaply and finished his with 2/19 confirming his status as his team's leading wicket taker.

Colts were looking to wrap up the tail but despite a quick wicket the tail wagged. The final fell when Clarkson took a catch close in off the bowling of Heppell dismissing Costello wrapping up Colts innings at 134.

In reply James Kuttz (24) opened with another new Redback Mark Mills who opened his account for his new club by cutting a ball over slips for two before hitting one down the throat of the gully fielder Ben Heppell came to the wicket keen to get the show moving. In a power display he hit 13 fours in 25 balls with only 5 dot balls. Heppell was dismissed trying to hit one to backward point off the bowling of Colt's skipper O'Leary. As he returned to the sheds the Redbacks were in a commanding position at 2/96.

Colts spinner Kiernan grabbed the next two wickets cheaply and despite being in a solid position the Redbacks were wary of a middle order collapse.

The cool heads of Drewery (7) and Clarkson (18) saw the Redbacks home without the loss of another wicket. They reached the required target in just 20 overs.

REDBACKS WHEATVALE LEAD THE WAY The Rosewool Redbacks and Wheatvale teams head the standings in the Condamine Cup after the opening three rounds.

The Redbacks scored an impressive win over rivals Colts at Warwick Cricket headquarters. Colts won the toss and elected to bat and got away to an impressive start.

There were 41 runs on the board before the fall of the first wicket.

John Cleary was bowled by Clarkson for 34. Some good line and length bowling from Don Drewery and first time bowler Shawn Brown saw the scoring slow after having a confident appeal for LBW turned down Drewery bowled a lightning bolt that hit the pad dismissing Fearby for 12.

The first ball of the next over provided Shawn Brown with his first career wicket for the Redbacks when he claimed the important wicket of Lachy Gross(16) when he was caught at mid-off by Ben Heppell. In an interesting stat it seems Heppell an affinity for dismissing Gross. Fielding in the same position he has taken the catch to dismiss Gross every Colts and Redbacks have met.

FOLLOWING FAMILY TRADITION Harrison Glasgow only took two games to show his class smashing an unbeaten 154 in what was a commanding performance with the bat. He follows in the footsteps of his father and grandfather. Both had impressive careers with the club.

Allora had first use of the wicket and posted what looked to be a handy score of 204.

Will Ole was the best of the Allora batsmen top scoring with 37.

Aden Howard headed the bowling figures taking 4/26.

Despite the impressive batting of Harrison Glasgow the remaining Wheatvale batsmen capitulated leaving the youngster to score the bulk of the runs. Alongside his 154 n.o. the next best was Hayden Doherty (12). Glasgow was in danger of running out of partners

before the game was wrapped up with Wheatvale scoring 9/206.

Allora 204 (Will Ole 37, B.McClure 35, A.Howard 4-36, J.O'Brien 2-14) lost to Wheatvale 9-206 (Harrison Glasgow 154 not out, H.Doherty 12, Nick Goetz 3-17, Bruce Ole 2-18) POSITIVE NOD TO THE FUTURE In a good sign for the future of local cricket there was a plethora of runs scored in the Under 15 game between Southern Downs and Lockyer played at Slade Park on Sunday. A total of over 500 runs were scored in the game.

Batting on the same deck as the senior players had used on Saturday Southern Downs set their opponents a big target of 337. There was some fine hitting from Josh Hagenbach (110) who scored a rate century in this level of cricket. Also among the runs were Neil Perrett (48) Tom Doherty (39) and Morgan Bourke (39).

Lockyer made a good fist of the run chase but was dismissed for 194. Josh Sippel top scored for the visitors with 55 while Elliott Ferguson so made a fine half century.

Hagenbach capped off a stunning day by taking 2/16. Tom Doherty also bowled well and after batting well claimed two wickets for 21 runs.

The performance of these juniors augers well for the future of cricket in the district.

CHANGE OF FORTUNE FOR WANDERERS Wanderers Cricket Club scored a much welcome win over their more fancied opponents South's in round three of the Stanthorpe cricket season.

Wanderers were convincing winners after posting their opponents South's a modest run chase of 152.

Tim Harslett opened the batting alongside Rashleigh and ope scored with 37.

The first wicket fell with the score at 51 when Rashleigh was dismissed off the bowling of Harry Williams. At the midpoint of the game Wanderers were 3/109 and while the remaining batsmen got starts no-one was able to go on to a big score.

Despite a good bowling performance from youngster Harry Williams who finished with 4/32 the South's bowlers did themselves no favours. Untidy deliveries contributed 31 extras to the Wanderers scorecard.

important early beak throughs.

Aldridge had the scalp of South's captain Ben Staley for a duck with the last ball of the opening over and the score 1/1. Fellow opener Singh was despatched to the sheds shortly after when Harslett took a catch off the bowling of Carnell. The dangerous Liam Lanza fell cheaply and South's were selling at 3/13.

Wanderers introduced Eddie Filmer into the attack. Filmer playing in his first game of cricket at any level decimated South's batting line up taking an impressive 5/10. South's were dismissed for a dismal 68. Williams top scored with 10. Once again the highlight of the batting innings was the 19 contributed by extras.

South's will be smarting after the loss but the 84 run victory is certainly a change of fortune for Wanderers.

South's will face last season's cellar dwellers in the final game of the washed out round one and will be keen to erase last weekend's loss.

Wanderers will play Tenterfield and on the back of last weekend's results will be expecting a win.

Perhaps the less said about the other game played in Stanthorpe the better. In what can only be described as a one sided game RSL and Tenterfield faced off on the CF White Oval.

Tenterfield batted first and were dismissed

by RSL for just 20 runs. Josh Wren backed up his good bowling last week with a stellar exhibition against Tenterfield. He took 5/10 as the visitors capitulated in just four overs.

Wren has the impressive tally if 11 wickets in two games for just 22 runs. There are a few Aussie bowlers who would be pleased with those figures right at the minute.

Unsurprisingly it took the premiers just four overs chase down the required 20 runs without the loss of a wicket.

EFFORTS RECOGNISED Nine Warwick and Cunningham Polocrosse players were recognised for their achievements at the recent annual South East Zone function in Toowoomba.

Warwick players Bree Thornton, Alicia Shepherd, Sally McGrath, Jordan McGrath and Bridget Shepherd each won best player awards in their respective grades along with Cunningham's Charles Lund and Anthony O'Leary.

Cameron Reardon (Warwick) and Tegan Lamb (Cunningham) won Achievement Awards in the Under 12 age group.

Tansey players Tom O'Neill and Beth Hafey who have both played Test Polocrosse were named Best A Grade At the AGM Justin Hafey Tansey was elected President of the Association.
