It all starts on Friday 9 November, when Geelong’s floating Christmas tree will return to the bay. One lucky local child – chosen through a colouring competition - will have the honour of flicking the switch to officially launch the City’s celebrations.

This year’s tree lighting ceremony will feature the biggest entertainment line-up yet, starting at 7.00pm with performances from The Kazoos and culminating in a colourful lighting and fireworks display at 9.00pm.

The festive atmosphere will continue as a marching band leads the crowd on a short walk past the glow of the Catenary Star and lights on the corner of Moorabool and Malop St, and on to City Hall to see the stunning new light projection show

starting at 9.30pm, created by local artist Matt Bonner.

Saturday 10 November will see Malop Street come alive for the twilight Gala Parade, beginning with the unveiling of the Myer Geelong Christmas windows at 5.00pm. This year’s theme is based on the classic children’s book One Christmas Eve

by Corinne Fenton. Deakin University engineering students will again add animatronic movement to the characters – a partnership fit for our clever and creative city!

Then later join thousands of people lining Geelong’s streets for the twilight Gala parade as costumes, LED floats and glittering lights trace a magical path through Central Geelong.

The Christmas program is a partnership between the City and Central Geelong Marketing and supported by the GeelongPort, Myer, Westfield Geelong, Deakin University, Hanlon Industries, Total Events and Elstones Diving Services.

Geelong’s Christmas celebrations will open with a bang as the City hosts a spectacular weekend of free Christmas attractions to ring in the festive season.

MYER CHRISTMAS WINDOWS TO COME ALIVE THANKS TO DEAKIN STUDENTS

Engineering students from Deakin University have again partnered with Central Geelong Marketing and the City of Greater Geelong to add animatronic movement to the characters.

The theme is based on the classic children’s book, One

Christmas Eve by Corinne Fenton and illustrated by Marjorie Crosby-Fairall.

The Geelong windows are a retrospective of the 2016 Myer Melbourne windows and feature Bella – who on Christmas Eve finds herself on a magical adventure.

This year’s display will include all five windows in the One Christmas Eve story.

The Myer Geelong Christmas Windows will be unveiled at 5.00pm on Saturday 10 November, just before the twilight Gala Parade.

The windows are proudly presented by Central Geelong Marketing, Westfield Geelong, Myer, Deakin University and the City of Greater Geelong.

EXCITING PROJECTION SHOW FOR CITY HALL Join the Christmas star for a new journey through the projection display on City Hall.

The building’s Gheringhap Street façade will come alive in an animated light show that will delight people of all ages.

Many people will be familiar with the amazing work of local artist Matt Bonner who has brought colour and light to City Hall with ANZAC commemoration, Reconciliation Week, Geelong After Dark and Christmas projections.

This year’s theme continues the journey of the Christmas star with new animated treatments, evoking a sense of wonder

while celebrating the magic of Christmas.

Watch as the star weaves through City Hall’s columns, then disappears and remerges from the building’s windows.

Christmas lights and Lego animations will feature in a spectacular display.

The City Hall projections will run nightly from 9.00pm – 12.00am starting 9 November and finishing on 7 January.

State Government has refused to step in over a $3.1 million cost blowout that has short-changed Chilwell Primary School of a planned two-storey redevelopment.

The refusal comes as Labor moves to protect the seat of Gee-

long, where the school is located, against an election challenge from high-profile ex-mayor Darryn Lyons.

Education Minister James Merlino declined to address the funding shortfall, order a re-assessment of the project, or explain the cost rises.

“All school communities have infrastructure projects that they would like to undertake,” he said.

“We need to responsibly balance and prioritise the needs of over 1500 government schools in Victoria, all in varying condition.”

Geelong’s “living memorial” to Australians who served in war will commemorate the Centenary of Armistice in three free musical performances next week.

Since 1946 Geelong Memorial Brass Band had been a living tribute to returned service personnel, its secretary Colin Whitehand explained.

“Our uniform reflects the army, navy and airforce services,” he said.

“We are honoured to be a part of the tribute recognising this important centenary.”

City of Greater Geelong was proud to host the Armistice Living Tribute at Johnstone Park on 7 November, acting mayor Peter Murrihy said.

“We encourage everyone to attend, and honour the more than 60,000 brave Australians who lost their lives during World War I.”

The free street theatre performance will recognise the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice on 11 November 1918, which brought an end to World War I. Mr Murrihy invited Geelong residents to attend one of three shows at Johnstone Park at midday, 2pm or 4pm.

“This free street performance is a great opportunity for our community to come together to commemorate the centenary of the Armistice,” he said.

The 20-minute shows feature professional circus artists performing acrobatics, with music from Geelong Memorial Brass Band.

The event pays tribute to World War I musicians who also acted as stretcher bearers, while also highlighting the significance of the Armistice and encouraging Victorians to participate in commemorations and activities on Remembrance Day.

From page 1 State Government allocated $2.4 million in its 2017-2018 budget for the school and in July 2017 appointed a Melbourne building company to design a new building.

Initial planning indicated demolition costs and a total price of $2,409,967 for a two-storey rebuild, the Indy revealed last week.

But a series of cost rises caused Victorian School Building Authority (VSBA) to eventually offer a “complete refurbishment” of the existing aged wing instead.

Mr Merlino’s “inaction“ left school council president Phil Joyce “truly astounded”.

“The Victorian Government in this case do not want to hear from the community,“ he said.

Replacing the “asbestos-riddled” wing was “vital” as the school neared its maximum enrolment of 400 to 425, Mr Joyce said.

“The costing has risen... to $5.5 million in June this year with no explanation to school or its community whatsoever.”

The school’s council obtained a quote for a two-storey rebuild from a Geelong builder that was within the $2.4 million budget.

“We want to make sure we get the best value for money,” Mr Joyce said.

“The last time we got funding of this nature was back in 2003 and before that 1970.”

The refusal comes after State Government intervened when unexpected costs threatened $21.2 million of projects at Geelong High School and Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College.

Geelong MP Christine Couzens recently secured an extra $3 million for both projects to aid with asbestos removal.

Shadow education minister Tim Smith slammed Ms Couzens and Mr Merlino.

“Labor have ignored this school and its concerns,” he said.

Mr Smith promised to “have a good look” at the project if the coalition won office.

“It’s clearly been completely bungled. Parents and school community need answers.”

Staffless MRI ‘idle’

By Luke Voogt A new $2 million CT scanner in Geelong “has no staff to run it”, according to Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association.

Association assistant secretary Andrew Hewat on Wednesday made the allegation, which Barwon Health chief executive officer Ruth Salom described as “misleading”.

“We have a brand new, world-class CT scanner sitting idle with no staff to run it while the Emergency Department suffers daily bedblock,” Mr Hewat said.

“The public won’t get to see the machine as Barwon Health refuses to employ the necessary staff needed to operate it.“ A meeting of the association at Barwon Medical Imaging voted unanimously against Barwon Health opening the machine “without

the staff to operate it”, Mr Hewat said.

“The lack of respect for staff by the (executive) makes a mockery of Barwon Health’s values and has led to a loss of confidence in the leadership.”

Mr Hewatt also accused Professor Salom of blocking an application for a full Medicare bulk-billing MRI licence for the $33 million Barwon North medical facility under construction at Norlane.

“The decision to block an application for a fully-funded Medicare MRI license is bewildering,” he said “Senior hospital medicos are dumbfounded by this decision that will see this opportunity lost, depriving Geelong’s northern suburbs of this much-needed service.”

But Prof Salom denied Mr Hewats’ claims.

“The (association’s) media release is mis-

leading and we invite their representatives to meet with us to discuss their issues,” she said.

“I am working closely with the director of Barwon Medical Imaging to finalise our two applications for additional MRI licences.”

Barwon Health was seeking to upgrade a half licence they currently had at the hospital to a full licence, and to apply for a full licence at Barwon Health North facility, Prof Salom said.

“This expansion of our bulk-billed MRI services will address the growing demand in our community for MRI driven by the burgeoning Geelong population.”

The allegations are part of a several-monthlong dispute between Barwon Health and the association, which has accused Prof Salom of having of an “agenda” to privatise local health services.

Inspector charged A police Inspector will appear in Geelong Magistrates Court in February on charges related to allegations an officer "fraudulently took possession of a number of properties", the force's watchdog has revealed.

The Inspector would face three charges, including perjury, and a Sergeant would appear in a Melbourne court over 20 allegedly related offences, said the Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission (IBAC).

Cats draw A round-two match with Melbourne will be the first of the Cats’ nine games in Geelong next year, the AFL’s draw for 2019 has revealed.

The Cats will also play fellow Victorian teams the Bulldogs, Saints, Kangaroos and Carlton at Kardinia Park, with the draw scheduling four of the local matches after dark, three at twilight and two during the day.

Signs arrest A man who allegedly stole 18 of Darryn Lyons’ state election campaign signs is set to front court in January.

Detectives arrested the 33-year-old with the signs at his Hamlyn Heights home last Friday after police were supplied a day earlier with images of the man and a vehicle allegedly involved in the thefts.

Complaint rejected Australia’s press watchdog has rejected a complaint of inaccuracy in a Geelong Indy report that National Disability Insurance Scheme funds had paid for Disneyland trips and ocean cruises.

The Australian Press Council investigated but was “not satisfied that any statements of fact in the article (were) substantially inaccurate or based on an omission of key facts”.

Electricity shock The cost of electricity will “skyrocket” $101 for the average Geelong household next year on the back of rising natural gas prices, according to a self-described “progressive” research unit.

The McKell Institute said the city’s average residential electricity bills “could” total $1286 next year as the increasing cost of gas flowed on to power generators.

Stroke survivor, 11, on big walk for charity

By Luke Voogt After learning to speak, sit and run again, striding a few kilometres a day is nothing for 11-year-old stroke survivor Aashtin Artz.

The Bell Post Hill boy aims to clock 60km alongside his family this month to raise money for Stride4Stroke, up on his 50km in last November’s fundraiser.

“I want people to know you can get better from it,“ he said.

Aashtin survived a stroke on 6 May, 2017, partly thanks to his quick-thinking sister and mother.

“Everything was blurry, I was dizzy, I was vomiting everywhere,” he said.

“I remember my big sister coming in and she rang my mum to say that I wasn’t feeling that well.”

He remembered little except hopping into the ambulance, until he woke after lifesaving surgery and began his long path to rehabilitation.

“I was pretty worried that I wouldn’t recover and I’d be like I was forever, so I just kept trying my hardest and never gave up,” he said.

“I had to learn to speak, sit up, walk, run and all that sort of stuff again. (My parents)

A dog’s killing of a possum at Barwon Heads before “carrying its prize along the beach” has prompted a foreshore manager’s call for owners to exercise greater control over pets.

Barwon Coast said the removal of trees to make way for housing in coastal areas was forcing possums into the open during daylight, making them vulnerable to uncontrolled pets.

Creative kids make a splash Two Geelong primary students have won $500 each for water sustainability projects at their schools after showcasing their creative talents.

Manifold Heights Primary School grade six student Emily Foot was among the Geelong winners in Barwon Water’s annual poster competition.

Her colourful entry was one of 760, with Barwon Water announcing four winners during National Water Week.

The winners received a $150 prize pack and $500 for a water sustainability project at their school.

theme encouraged students to think about usage on a day-to-day basis and how to protect supplies for future generations.

“We received terrific entries from local students who illustrated the importance of water with beautiful colour and creativity.”

“We look forward to working with the winning students and their schools on sustainable water projects that will inspire students continue their great water-saving efforts.”

A Bell Post Hill man who allegedly caused a crash killing a 31-week-old unborn child has missed his court date, sparking a police manhunt.

Police released an image of Shane Bausch, 57, on Tuesday after he failed to appear in court on charges from a crash near Bannockburn in March 2016.

Mr Bausch last appeared at Geelong County Court in April where a judge ordered him to stand trial before a jury later this year.

A Victoria Police spokesperson confirmed to the Indy that Mr Bausch had failed to appear in Geelong County Court on serious driving charges related to the fatal crash.

The crash occurred about 4pm on 28 March, 2016, on Midland Hwy, leaving a 31-year-old Ballarat North woman withQ2000 serious injuries and killing her unborn child.

Two other children in her car were unharmed.

Mr Bausch appeared at Geelong Magistrates’ Court in July, 2016, to face charges of dangerous driving causing serious injury, negligently causing serious injury and dangerous driving.

Police also charged him with failing to give way, drug-driving and failing a drug blood test within three hours of driving.

Mr Bausch avoided a culpable driving charge because under Victorian law a fetus is not recognised as a child until it has breathed.

Police alleged that Mr Bausch drove a Holden Statesman into the side of the victim’s vehicle when he turned onto the highway from Clyde Rd.

WANTED: Shane Bausch failed to appear in court.

Mr Bausch later appeared in Geelong County Court on 12 April, 2018, to seek a sentence indication.

The court heard he had ice and other drugs in his system when he allegedly caused the crash, Q2200his driving. which prosecutors said affected But Mr Bausch’s defence lawyer argued a doctor’s report indicating Mr Bausch’s driving was impaired by the drugs was unreliable because the doctor was not a toxicology expert.

The judge adjourned the case and ordered Mr Bausch to stand trial later this year.

A warrant was issued on Tuesday for Mr Bausch’s arrest in “relation to serious trafficrelated offences”, police said.

Police described Mr Bausch as 190cm tall and of thin build, with an olive complexion, brown thinning hair and green eyes and said he frequented Geelong.

PM here with $154m ‘deal’

By Luke Voogt Funding for Geelong’s convention centre is virtually guaranteed after a $154 million federal boost this week.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the cash for a Geelong City Deal this week, guaranteeing bipartisan support after a similar commitment from state Labor.

“This deal will be a game-changer from Geelong all the way along the coast,” Mr Morrison said.

“Our significant investments in Geelong infrastructure will mean more jobs and a better quality of life for hard-working families, giving local businesses a real boost.”

The federal commitment followed months of lobbying for the Commonwealth to match the $153 million state pledge in May. The money will pay for the long-proposed convention centre and a transformation of the Twelve Apostles precinct and Shipwreck Coast.

The funding would help Great Ocean Road towns make the most of their six million visitors each year, Mr Morrison said.

“We don’t want people just day-tripping from Melbourne, we want them staying the night at a local hotel, eating dinner at the local pub and buying coffee in the morning at a local cafe.”

Corangamite MP Sarah Henderson said the City Deal included a feasibility study to link Skenes Creek via Lorne to the Surf Coast Walk.

But Corio MP Richard Marles slammed the government’s delay, after opposition leader Bill Shorten already pledged $153 million for the City Deal last month.

“I’m glad that Labor’s commitment to invest in our region, and the looming election, has reminded them we exist,” the Labor MP said.

“But everyone knows they’ll forget their promises to our community as soon as the votes are counted.”

Fossil find in focus

By Luke Voogt A 28-million-year-old coral fossil has become the latest find in the collection of Fairhaven’s Rebecca Hosking and Mark Simson.

The couple has collected more than 20 animal and plant fossils, with the most ancient being about 120 million years old.

“It’s like little gifts from the past that come into the present,” Rebecca said.

Her fascination for prehistoric plants and animals began at age five on “fossil hunts” with her older sister at Kilmore.

“Our love of nature sort of brought us together,” she said.

Later, she declined a six-month position with a senior geologist when she studied arts at Bendigo but her fossil fascination never waned.

“It seems it’s something I’ll always have an interest in.”

The Indy photographer and environmental teacher found most of her fossils walking along the beach after moving to Fairhaven10 years ago.

“I’ve found urchins, sea sponges, a shark’s tooth, bryozoans and brachiopods in this area,” she said.

“In my mind they’re pretty regular finds,

whereas the coral and plant fossils are really cool finds.”

Mark found his first coral fossil 20 years ago, before meeting Rebecca.

A decade later Rebecca found another of their favourite fossils, a 120-million-year-old plant split in two.

“It’s amazing! I’ve got a carbon copy on both sides,” she said.

Museums Victoria curator emeritus Tom Darragh identified the latest find as a placotrochus, a coral from Cainozoic era (66 million years ago to now).

The fossil was 23 to 28 million years old, he said.

Renaming an historic Newtown oval after a fastfood chain has “undermined” council’s antiobesity efforts, according to a local health expert.

Gary Sacks said council’s decision to approve the new name defied its own policies to combat obesity, such as a ban on sugary beverages.

“When you hear examples like this to endorse a decision to allow junk food advertising plastered over sports ovals, that’s a concern,” said Associate Professor Sacks, from Deakin University’s Global Obesity Centre.

“If Geelong council did want to get serious about obesity management, they should have a policy in this area.”

Assoc Prof Sacks described the decision as disappointing given council had shown “great leadership” and “been very vocal” in obesity prevention.

In February council decided to phase out sugary drinks at its leisure centres over two years.

“What this shows is one part of council is not really talking to another part of council, which is a shame,” assoc prof Sacks said.

“Obesity is probably the biggest health issue at the moment - if you’re serious about obesity prevention you need to attack it from multiple angles.”

KFC was attempting to appear “community-minded” in a “well-documented tactic” of fast food chains, Assoc Prof Sacks said.

“They’re trying to deflect attention from the fact they’re selling unhealthy products and

heavily promoting their products to children.”

The criticism followed the Indy revealing that council failed to contact the family of Geelong historic figure Frederick Stinton before approving the renaming.

Ratepayers Geelong president Jim Collins said the failure was “a sad blight on the family”.

“A naming decision at least deserves some community input. Our history is a very big thing.”

Mr Collins described the approval as “totally hypocritical” given council’s various harmminimisation policies.

The decision set a dangerous precedent for renaming historic landmarks, he said.

“Where’s it going to end?”

But City Hall community director Robyn Stevens said temporarily renaming sports ovals generated much-needed funding for clubs.

Council’s Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan 2018-2021 included goals to improve access to healthy local food and tackle obesity, she said.

“We need our community as a whole to encourage each other to lead healthier lifestyles where possible.

Newtown and Chilwell Cricket Club president Frank Tuskes recently defended the temporary renaming in the local press.

The club respected Frederick Stinton and had previously paid homage to his contributions to Geelong, Mr Tuskes said.

KFC did not respond to the Indy’s enquiries before deadline.

After 100 years Fred Benham has outlasted two major companies and his first hometown, but still gets around without a walker, glasses or hearing aids.

People tell the Hamlyn Heights centenarian he looks not a day over 80, to which he replies: “I think you need to get your eyes checked.”

Fred celebrated the century mark two days early at Cobradah Senior Citizens Club, Bell Post Hill, on Monday before family celebrations on Wednesday.

“You learn a lot if you live a long time ... but you forget most of it,” he told the crowd to laughter.

“I’ve always said I’ve been part of the best club in Geelong.”

Fred was 11 days old when World War I ended, after his birth on 31 October 1918, and lived his first few years at Rocklyn near Daylesford.

“Which is no longer a town - it’s just a postcode now,” he said.

“My first memory was sitting underneath a table in Belmont crying.”

Later he discovered he was crying because his “destitute“ mother, the second-youngest in a family of 11, had put him up for adoption.

A Drysdale couple in their 70s raised Fred, from whom he took his surname.

The pensioner couple were receiving eight shillings a week per child to look after up to four other children, Fred said.

“They were getting nothing for me. All my brothers and sisters had different surnames.”

His foster parents found him a job at age 13, straight after he earned his merit certificate at primary school, he said.

“They had a job for me at two and sixpence picking potatoes at Curlewis.”

Fred spent most of his teenage years travelling for farm work, including a job packing

fruit in Mildura, before returning to his foster parents.

“When I came back one of them had died,” he said.

He took a maths course and then enrolled at Gordon Institute of Technology to train as a fitter and turner.

About the same time he tracked down his mother, who he forgave “absolutely” after discovering her circumstances, which he wished to withhold from the record.

“I had contact with her until she died in 1968, I think,” he said.

After several years working at Geelong’s Ford factory, Fred got a job at International Harvester.

For decades Fred worked tirelessly, driving back and forth from work to management night school at RMIT, in pursuit of “security”.

Eventually he became works manager for International Harvesters’ factories at Port Melbourne Dandenong and North Shore.

“I’ve worn out about 20 motor cars driving between plants,” he said.

He left International Harvester before the company’s closure devastated Geelong in 1982, after a superior told him to “look the other way” from corruption, he said.

His questioning of an overpriced company contract led to the discovery, which he wished not to explain further on the record.

Fred said he had lived “quite healthily“ after retiring, especially after a heart attack in his 60s.

He suffered two more heart attacks, including one three years ago when doctors told him he had five hours to live.

But travelling the world with his partner Marie Phillips, who coincidentally turned 86 on Monday, had given him “peace of mind” in later life, he said.

Deliver us from entanglers I was perplexed by Mr Frank Lowry's response (Letters, 26 October) to my letter the previous week.

I wondered how I could have got things so wrong. Then I realised our information came from different reference material.

I mistakenly thought that, because Mr Lowry was talking about "God's blessing", the Bible might be the best book to turn to for clarification. But it appears Quantum Mechanics is the best source of information for dealing with spiritual needs.

The New Testament, part of the Christian handbook, has five references to entanglement but none describe it as a good thing, rather of

taining the status quo. They support access for all Victorians to public lands.

Labor and the Greens have not responded but appear to support locking us out.

With the upcoming Victorian election, BUGU asks voters to think carefully about for whom they vote.

Do voters support locking people out of the bush? Or do they support access for all?

The choice is up to voters.

Member for Corangamite Sarah Henderson has some gall in advertising that she has taken a strong stand on ending live sheep export (Geelong Indy, 26 October).

When she had the chance in September to cross the floor and vote to allow debate on this shameful practice she sided with the government to put the issue on the backburner (Geelong Indy, 12 October).

It seemed that Ms Henderson’s commitment to her career prospects took precedence over the wellbeing of defenceless animals.

I'm sure the sheep that melt to death this summer on a ship bound for the Middle East will understand just how much Ms Henderson really cares about them.

As with the two examples drawn from the Old Testament and used as comparisons to our existing situation, the societies in which both Noah and Lot lived were beyond redemption, and so God drew out individuals.

So in our time, the focus of the true disciples of Christ is on the saving of the individual rather than "entangling" ourselves trying to save society as a whole.

Labor ‘plant’ uproots Libs I am not usually a believer in conspiracy theories.

However, the suggestion that the former Liberal member for Wentworth, Malcolm Turnbull, was a Labor plant cannot be dismissed.

His divisive actions in government and his later betrayal of the party by unnecessarily resigning his seat, thereby triggering a by-election, only ever advanced the interests of the Labor party, which he initially approached to launch his political career.

This in itself should have made the alarm bells ring in Liberal party HQ. That it did not is a further adverse reflection on the management of the party and its selection process.

None of the three major supermarkets or a Geelong West specialty food store I visited stocked it but some had small jars of creamylooking honey, not labelled as such.

What was truly astonishing was that staff and other shoppers had never heard of creamy honey. For the uninitiated, it is crystalised and whipped pure honey without additives.

After a spot of on-line research I was able to buy two 1kg tubs at $15 each at Belmont Sunday Market. I believe creamy honey is also available at some Bellarine Peninsula Sunday markets.

Like all honey, it can sit on the shelf for years without going bad or growing green fur, like jams and preserves.

I heartily recommend checking out creamy honey to get the same enjoyment from it that I do.

Fight lefty bush lock-outs Recently the Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) released a draft report changing classification of public lands in central Victoria.

The result could see approximately 80,000 hectares of public land changing status, excluding existing legal users from this land. The driving forces include the usual grab-bag of far-left green activists.

The implication we will be locked out of large segments of public land. People such as horse riders, trail-bike riders, hunters, prospectors, dog walkers, miners, campers, fourwheel drivers, firewood collectors, apiarists, mountain-bike riders, timber workers and car rally enthusiasts will be negatively affected.

It’s not just central Victorian public lands under threat. The Strathbogies, the Emerald Link and the Great Forest are all targets on the Greens hit list to lock up huge areas of bushland.

Bush Users Group United (BUGU) is fighting the proposed changes in central Victoria.

BUGU has asked all Victorian parliamentarians where they stand in relation to locking legal bush users out from public lands.

The IPCC’s latest climate report claims must be challenged.

The report argues the world’s temperature has risen by 1C above pre-industrial levels and is anticipated to rise by 1.5C in about 30 years.

The 1C claim presupposes that the world’s temperature was known in the 1850s. It was not because there were few reliable weather stations in Africa and Asia at the time and temperature records for Latin America and the vast area of Russia were not monitored.

What the IPCC fails to mention is there were no weather stations in the sea, which covers over 75 per cent of the world’s surface, nor in the Arctic or the Antarctic. Only in North America and western Europe were reliable daily records kept.

There are no global temperature records from the 19th Century.

On top of this we have the unsubstantiated claims about impending sea level rises, coastal flooding, increases in extreme weather events, ocean acidification and such like. It’s all crystal ball-gazing to try and second guess what the climate will do in 50 years and beyond.

It’s time for a Royal Commission to test the veracity of climate change science.

Our godless government In the past most of our laws were based on the 10 commandments but some recent laws are directly opposed to God’s word.

Moreover, society’s rejection of Biblical teachings is changing attitudes about standards of right and wrong.

No government can function or make policies without an ethical guide, or some standard of good and evil.

We need members in parliament to promote biblical standards for moral and social life.

We need MPs prepared to wind back much of what the present State Government has introduced into our public school system, such as gender theory and the so-called Safe Schools program.

The opposition must make clear where it stands on these issues.

Much is said about making society better but where is the concern for our children and future generations?

Jesus had a great concern for little children, so how can a follower of Christ condone and vote for those who ignore the spiritual welfare of children and who introduced standards opposed to God’s word.

Stars rocking at Gateway

By Luke Voogt Old-school Aussie country rock comes to Gateway Hotel next Friday as the reunited Stars return to Geelong after almost 40 years apart.

The band reunited after lead singer Mick Pealing met with fellow member Mal Eastwick at an induction into South Australia’s country hall of fame in 2015.

“We got talking and realised it had been 40 years, and thought we should get the band back together,” Pealing said.

What started as “a nostalgic thing” became a “full-blown” rebirth for the band when it released Boundary Rider in March, the 63-yearold said.

“We’re actually into about nine or ten songs for our next album.”

Despite decades between albums Stars had remained true to their original sound, Pealing said.

“It’s almost like a bridge from then to now - the first song we wrote is Time Stands Still,” he said.

The new song told of the band’s journey from Adelaide to Melbourne and the death of band member Andy Durant from melanoma in 1980, Pealing explained.

Stars released their first album, Paradise, in 1975 and supported iconic acts like Little River Band.

Little River Band’s Beeb Birtles gave Stars their big break, helping them sign with Mushroom Records and move to Melbourne.

The band went on to support Linda Ronstadt, Joe Cocker, The Beach Boys and Electric Light Orchestra (ELO).

ELO got caught using backing tapes, “a big no no” at the time, while The Beach Boys were playing bad due to infighting, Pealing said.

MIGHTY ROCK: The Stars return to Geelong next Friday with old tunes and songs from new album Boundary Rider.

But the turmoil had unexpected benefits for Stars, he said.

“The press were basically saying get there early to see the support because they were the highlight.”

But Stars split, with the band members going in separate musical “directions” and Andy Durant battling cancer, Pealing said.

“We were doing six, sometimes seven gigs a week and we just got tired of it in the long run.”

The band briefly reunited for a concert tribute to Durant after his death, including Jimmy Barnes, Richard Clapton and Ian Moss, to raise

money for Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

“It’s a concert that still gets talked about,” Pealing said.

“I’ve sort of kept myself busy with various bands over the years since then.”

After reuniting the original band, Pealing signed up solo artist Nicholas Charles after seeing him play live at a Melbourne pub.

“I sort of made a mental note thinking, ’this guy’s good, I’d like to do something with him down the track’,” he said.

“He was a good country-blues picker and that’s exactly what Andy was.”

Together they wrote the bulk of Boundary Rider, Pealing said.

“That’s probably the most exciting thing for me, just coming up with these songs and having a really good time playing them.”

The band returns to Geelong with a mixture of old tunes and new songs.

“I reckon I’ve got more energy - I’m singing much better than I did when I was in my 20s,” Pealing said.

“We’re all in our 60s but the music keeps you young - doing what you love is what it’s all about.”

Menopause a night for girls

James Macdonald never thought performing at his local pub would lead to him playing in one of Australia’s biggest ABBA tribute acts.

For 25 years the guitarist has played Bjorn Ulvaeus in BABBA, touring Australia and the world.

“I wasn’t quite prepared for how successful it would become,” he said.

The journey started at Royal Derby Hotel, Fitzroy, where Macdonald was a regular in a pop-rock band “along the lines of Crowded House”.

“I was living as most musicians do, from hand to mouth,” he said.

“That said, Melbourne was fantastic (at the time) - you could play in three or four bands and earn good money.”

One night the hotel’s manager asked him to play ABBA songs with university student Michael Ingvarson and three others.

“This came out of leftfield,” he said.

“As a musician you kind of take gigs that will supply you with an income.”

The show was a hit and Macdonald and Ingvarson, as ’Benny’, have played together since, in a tribute act lasting twice as long as ABBA itself.

“When people hear us it’s as close as we can possibly get to what was on the radio,” Macdonald said.

The band studied ABBA interviews to mimic Benny, Bjorn, Agnetha and Frida, even talking in Swedish accents between songs.

“It’s not as full on as the Swedish chef on The Muppets,” Macdonald said.

“When you listen to Benny and Bjorn talk in interviews they have very international accents and speak very softly.“ The band gained fame at hundreds of gigs

Four women vying for a black lace bra kicks off what Australian Stage describes as 90 minutes of extraordinary fun in Menopause the Musical.

A sisterhood forms between the women, as they poke fun at their woeful hot flushes, wrinkles, memory loss, night sweats and chocolate binges.

The play, which debuted on stage in Orlando in 2001, comes to the Potato Shed on Sunday for a raucous show featuring hit tunes from the 60s, 70s and 80s.

The lyrics parody popular music from the baby boomer era with alternative titles like Stayin’ Awake and Puff, My God I’m Draggin’.

The play came to New York City’s OffBroadway in 2002, logging 1500 performances before spreading to overseas theatres.

Sub-titled Women on Fire, this latest version features new songs, dance routines and gags to get the audience dancing with the cast.

Stage Whispers’ Kimberley Shaw described the play as “the quintessential girls’ night out”.

“If you are pre, post or presently menopausal, I suggest grabbing a girlfriend and checking out this celebration of the change,” she said.

The play features the acting talents of Victoria Nicolls as the ‘Dubbo Housewife’, Melanie Evans as the ‘Professional Woman’, Meg Kiddle as ‘Earth Mother’ and Lilias Davie as the ‘Soap Star’.

Menopause the Musical comes to the Potato Shed for two shows at 2pm and 8pm on Sunday.

Bjorn to take it all

RE-BJORN: James Macdonald in action in long-running tribute act BABBA. across Australia and often had concerts go well into the early morning.

They recently played on a cruise alongside Darryl Braithwaite and last year performed with Canberra Symphony Orchestra for 15,000 people.

“Way back in the day” BABBA had a Friday night Geelong gig, where Macdonald spotted Cats ruckman John Barnes, he said.

The band returns to perform at Sphinx Hotel on 17 November.

“I always like coming to Geelong,” he said.

Macdonald was surprised at the number of

19-to-25-year-olds at BABBA concerts, especially at recent university shows.

“I think it’s been passed down through their DNA,” he joked.

“I’ll have to get a scientist to test that. More likely it’s through the movie (Mamma Mia!) or their parents’ record collection.”

ABBA songs stood the “test of time” because of well-constructed melodies and catchy lyrics, he said.

“There’s a lot to each song musically, which you probably don’t get unless you have to play them.

“That’s why they have such impact on people.”

SENIORS Together again at Ingenia Two residents of Ingenia Lifestyle Lara have rekindled their love after unwittingly moving into the same retirement community a stone’s throw away from each other.

Di and Bruce Johnson, both in their 60s, purchased their properties in early 2017 before reuniting while participating in the community’s Be Active program.

“Although separating was truly awful, we wouldn’t have sold our home and downsized to Ingenia Lifestyle Lara otherwise, and if it wasn’t for this fantastic community we might not have gotten back together,” Bruce says.

“After we began spending more time together again I decided to open a love letter Di had written to me when we separated. It was unopen because previously I couldn’t bear to read it but, having the newfound hope we were rekindling, I thought, ‘What the heck’.

“After reading the letter I knew I was not letting this woman go again.”

The pair married 18 months later in Bruce’s backyard.

“When Bruce moved into the community we often saw each other around or passed each other in the street.

We both love being social so we had a number of mutual friends in the community,” Di says.

“One day we were all chatting in the community clubhouse and it came up that I’d been unwell, so Bruce came over to make sure I was okay. Then we continued catching up and meeting at other at Ingenia’s Be Active events and activities.

“Within days of deciding we still wanted to be together we each put our homes on the market to buy a bigger home within the Ingenia community.

“As luck would have it, there was an open day that weekend, so we thought it was great timing, or possibly fate.”

The pair has just returned from their second honeymoon.

Assisting families and individuals during these times is part of the support provided by the team at Tuckers Funeral and Bereavement Service.

In November of each year Tuckers extends its Bereavement Care Program to the wider community by hosting a special Christmas memorial service.

‘A Time to Remember is aimed at helping those who have experienced grief and loss and to prepare for the Christmas period in particular.

Tuckers Bereavement Care Program has been a support network for the Geelong community since the late 1970s. A Time to Remember is an extension of that care.

“We are passionate about caring for our community, and that extends beyond the funeral service. Not everyone needs additional support, but it is something that can be requested by families as needed,” says Karen Thirlwell, bereavement care consultant.

The home was built by ‘Lady Squatters’ Anne Drysdale and Caroline Newcomb.

On Wednesday 21 November genealogist and Historian Susie Zada will conduct a free event for community members to hear about these very early, very successful and unique pioneers in Victoria.

The event will be held at Kings Funerals, Newcomb.

“Anne Drysdale was an independent woman from Scotland who arrived in 1839, already experienced in farming,” Susie says.

“She met up with Caroline Newcomb, an Englishwoman, who came to Port Phillip in 1836 as the governess to John Batman’s children. Their successful partnership saw them progress from a small cottage on their first property, Boronggoop, to their beautiful two-

storey architecturally designed colonial Gothic property of Coriyule.”

As well as covering the lives of the Lady Squatters, Susie's presentation will discuss the property owners before Anne and Caroline and those who followed through to the present-day owners.

“The gardens of Coriyule were also famous for their design as well as their award-winning productive orchards,” Susie says.

“In recent times the grounds of Coriyule have been open as part of the Open Garden Scheme. More than 175 years of documented evidence tell the story of this amazing property and its owners.”

Nissan can’t Leaf it alone though the price is likely to be significantly higher than for a conventional car in the same class and Nissan Oz won't release details at this stage.

Nissan Intelligent Mobility features active safety equipment such as a 360-degree Intelligent Around-View Monitor with Moving Object Detection, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Emergency Braking - with Pedestrian Protection, Intelligent Cruise and Trace Control and Intelligent Lane Intervention.

The new Nissan LEAF has an improved 110kW of power, up 38 per cent on the genone Leaf, and 320Nm of torque, an increase of 4 per cent).

We’ve yet to drive new Leaf, but that extra torque and the immediate acceleration it will provide should make it fun.

Nissan is making a big fuss about a feature it calls “e-Pedal”. This lets you drive simply by pushing down the accelerator to go faster and letting it up to go slower, even come to a stop.

But every electric car we’ve driven already has this. Indeed, it becomes a challenge as to how far you can drive without touching the brakes.

Leaf will be sold from 89 Nissan dealerships Australia wide, well up from the 12 when the Leaf was introduced in 2012.

New Nissan Leaf is available in six colours; Arctic White, Ivory Pearl with black roof, Magnetic Red, Pearl Black, Platinum and Gun Metallic.

As a final comment, Australia continues to be one of very few countries in the developed world with no government incentives whatsoever to assist buyers into clean, green cars.

By Ewan Kennedy Nissan has given a preview of its all-new second-generation electric Leaf electric to journalists specialising in motoring, technology, climate science and lifestyle ahead of the car’s release in mid-2019.

Range is always the first question asked about any pure-electric car. New Leaf has a real-world driving range of up to 270km per charge thanks, in part, to the larger 40kWh battery.

Given the average distance travelled per day by those in suburban areas is about 38km, a Leaf will only need a full charge about once a week. However, the majority of owners are likely to top up their car overnight Charging times will depend on the charging connection and will range between 24 hours to less than 60 minutes with a fast charge. Note that charging times for Australian-spec vehicles will be confirmed when vehicles arrive here.

JET Charge is Nissan’s preferred charger installer at Nissan dealers. It will also be able to fit out homes and other places with charging equipment nationally.

Fascinatingly, although the Leaf is built in the UK some components are made at the Nissan Casting plant in Dandenong, Victoria.

Readers will be pleased to know these Leaf components, indeed virtually all Nissan parts made in this country, have a small kangaroo motif on them - love it!

Styling of the first Leaf was on the strange side but the designers have given the new model an attractive look that's very mainstream.

Inside there's good legroom for four adults and five can be carried if you don't mind a bit of squeezing in the back seat.

The boot is huge, being particularly deep.

By Vani Naidoo Lexus has answered the call of Australian upmarket buyer by extending its SUV range to offer up a more-practical seven-seater.

The popular RX350 has been made 110mm longer, a third row added and an L stuck on the end of its name.

The wheelbase has remained the same, with the longer version keeping its junk in the trunk.

Hail the RX350L then, an almost-new addition to a growing seven-seater audience and an opportunity for the luxury brand to offer its customers a more complete line-up.

The RX350L is offered as a petrol or hybrid in either a Luxury of Sport Luxury grade.

The stylishly proud Lexus grille is hint enough at the RX 350L’s lineage, the sculpted lines and considered sweeps serving as a neat reminder.

The third row of seats adds to the Lexus’s practicality but is best reserved for children, and even then not for any great shakes of time.

The third row is easy to lower and stow thanks to an electronic adjustment button but access requires moving the second row forward.

The rest of the 350L’s interior is rather familiar, with the usual touches of luxury, excellent finishing and good materials choices.

The cabin is ergonomically designed, with clear instrumentation and nice-to-touch dials and buttons.

The infortainment inclusions could be better. The 8.0-inch screen in the Luxury grade is on the small side, while the resolution and colour are good but could be better.

The infotainment system is not helped much by the controller, which is difficult to navigate.

However, the cameras offer great guidance even at night when systems in some competitors have difficulty.

Bluetooth pairing is uncomplicated, there

is digital radio, and rear-seat passengers also have two USB inputs.

Our RX350L was powered by a 3.5-litre naturally aspirated V6 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and deliving 216kW of power and 358Nm of torque.

Standard active and passive driver aides include autonomous emergency braking, radar active cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring, and 10 airbags.

Front seats are both heated and cooled, with standard inclusions also including keyless entry, tri-zone climate control, powered tailgate, adaptive high beam LED headlights and reversing camera.

Storage is well thought-out, with deep door pockets, useful compartments and boot space that is respectable even with all seven seats in place. A mobile phone charging pad in front of the gear stick is a nice touch.

The Cats went in without skipper Eammon Vines whose good form had resulted in a callup to the Victorian side.

Batting first, Geelong could manage just 142 as Angus Boyd top scored with 27 ande Josh McDonald made 23 at the top of the order.

In reply, Greenvale looked like cruising to an easy win when at 2/82 but it was game on when Hayden Butterworth (2/14) struck a double blow.

From there Brenton McDonald (4/22) and Dom McGlinchey (3/24) took complete control of the game, dismissing their host for just 122.

That puts the Cats side at three wins from four starts. They take on second-placed Melbourne University this round in a two-day game and, in the form they’re in, will be relish the prospect of playing one of the top sides and showing they mean business.

In Geelong Cricket Association, South Barwon ended up cruising to victory against Grovedale in the completion of the only twoday game of the round.

Resuming at 3/47 in pursuit of the Tigers’ 111, Jack Spence (50) and Jordan Rossi (46) stood up and proved that the Swans might finally be spreading the load a bit more.

It must be said, though, that it was a fortunate toss to win for the Swans because the conditions were markedly different over the two weeks due to the weather on day one.

North Geelong hosts undefeated Newtwon & Chilwell in a huge match for both sides.

A loss for North Geelong would make its finals chances look very slim while, on the flip side, if the Two Blues can win again they will give themselves some breathing space from the rest of the pack and go a long way toward booking their spot in March action.

Bannockburn has won all three of its games so far, the Bulls adapting to turf cricket brilliantly, particularly considering they’re yet to play a home game and won’t do so for the next three games. They travel to Alexander Thomson this round in what might prove to be a sterner test.

Meanwhile, Teesdale, despite losing round one, has begun to hit its straps, claiming a thrilling outright win against Guild Saints last round.

Teesdale takes on Modewarre away this Saturday, with Modda also should providing a stiffer examination of Teesdale’s skills at this level.

Highly rated Gaelic footballer Stefan Okunbor has signed on with Geelong as a category B rookie for the next two seasons.

The 20-year-old Irishman has been on the AFL radar for several seasons, having been invited to the AFL Academy Camp in Florida and the AFL National Combine in Melbourne.

He returned to Ireland to work on his game, playing for home club Na Gaeil in Tralee, University of Limerick and Kerry U20s at intercounty level.

Okunbor had a dominant season in 2018 where he was awarded U20 Munster Player of the year and helped Kerry secure the Munster title with a man-of-the match display against Cork. In a statement, Okunbor’s club’s Na Gaeil said: “He has been a shining light in our club and while his team mates will miss him on and off the pitch, he is embarking on an exciting adventure in professional sport and he carries all our best wishes and we are sure the good wishes of all in Kerry GAA.” “Stefan is a physical and competitive player.

His speed, power and endurance are well-suited to AFL football,” Geelong’s recruiting and list manager Stephen Wells said.

“He is a talented young player, who has wholly committed to the opportunity of becoming an AFL footballer.”

Okunbor’s signing makes him the third Irishman on Geelong’s list, joining fellow Kerry local Mark O’Connor and Zach Tuohy at GMHBA Stadium. Geelong has also elevated rookies Jack Henry and Mark O’Connor to the club’s senior list. A rookie draft selection in 2017, Henry enjoyed a breakout year, playing 22 consecutive games after his AFL debut in round two.

Henry was named the club’s Best Young Player at the club’s ‘Carji’ Greeves Medal after playing a key position role in both attack and defence, he also earned a rising star nomination in round seven.

A former Gaelic footballer, O’Connor joined the Cats in the 2016 pre-season and has played seven games since debuting in round eight, 2017 including this year’s elimination final clash with Melbourne.

Pinkies bite ON THE BITE Chris Pitman With a busy schedule over the past week, including helping run a tackle show in Geelong, your usual On the Bite contributors ran out of time to produce a full summary of local fishing.

However, next week things should be back to normal, so for now we will provide an abridged version of the usual column.

First, plenty of pinkie snapper were taken on soft plastics by anglers fishing Along Alcoa Pier.

The same area and other locations around the bay fished well for salmon when they were busting up on the surface during the evenings.

Whiting began to come back on the chew off St Leonards. Tidal flow was key to success, with baits such as pippie and squid accounting for fish to 40cm.

Queesncliff Harbour was on fire for pinkies and silver trevally. Casting soft plastics on 1/8oz jig heads timed with slack tide caught both species to over 40cm. Nearby, the grass beds off Queenscliff gave up some thumping big squid for anglers drifting with artificial jigs.
