“It’s very exciting we could have a Cranbourne horse, a local horse running in the race that stops the nation,” Mr Bainbridge added. “It’ll be a busy day because we’re actually racing here on Melbourne Cup day races so I’d like to work out if I can get a leave pass from the chairman to attend the Melbourne Cup at Flemington if I’ve got a runner or have to work on the day,” he laughed.

As they race at Cranbourne on Melbourne Cup Day, there's a good chance a few of the key players might be a little distracted by the big event happening at Flemington. The “dream is still alive” for a few staff and committee members who have a share in a Cranbourne-trained horse to conquer the $7 million Melbourne Cup. Rising Red is currently 39th in the ballot order and must win the Group 3 Lexus Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington on Saturday 3 November to gain a Melbourne Cup start. The five-year old gelding, in the care of Cranbourne-based training team of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young, is co-owned by Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge and fellow staff and committee members Bruce Watson, Peter O’Shannessy, Luke King, Simon Hodgson, Andrew Brumby, Silvio Marinelli and Mandy Taylor. “We’re very realistic the fact that, A, to get into the field is very, very difficult and that in itself would be an unbelievable feat if he happen to win on Saturday,” Mr Bainbridge said. “It would clearly be an unbelievable dream come true to have a Melbourne Cup runner and obviously delighted to be part of the ownership,” he added. Mr Bainbridge said the Lexus Stakes (formerly the Hotham Handicap) on Derby Day carried ballot exemptions directly into the Melbourne Cup. He said all co-owners were excited, with the Busuttin-Young team also “very happy with him.” “He’s had a couple of injuries along the way but he’s back firing as good as ever. We’re optimistic that Saturday will deliver a great result for us,” he said.

Treasurer Tim Pallas said: "We're helping build the facilities that local communities need, maintaining and building on our state's sports and entertainment heritage."

A former betting ring at Cranbourne Racecourse will be transformed into a 1400-seat convention centre. The Andrews Government has committed to providing a $4.95 million loan to the Cranbourne Turf Club to convert the former betting ring into a new convention centre that will become a sports and entertainment hub for Melbourne's south-eastern suburbs. The centre would operate separately from the racing centre, with its own access from Grant Street, to allow private functions to be run on race days. The project, which is tipped to be completed by September 2019, will create about 185 jobs during construction and provide a further 235 jobs on an ongoing basis. Member for Eastern Victoria Daniel Mulino joined Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards and Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge in making the announcement on Tuesday 30 October. Mr Mulino said it was "really exciting ambitious project." "Cranbourne is growing and locals deserve first class sports and entertainment facilities close to home, and with this loan, Labor is delivering them," he said. "A convention centre, I believe is absolutely critical for a community." Minister for Racing Martin Pakula said: "The new convention centre at the Cranbourne Turf Club benefits not just Victorian racing, but the entire community of Casey." Mr Perera said the Cranbourne Racing Complex was "our local areas largest employer" and the new convention centre would "certainly boost our local economy in many ways." "This will create local jobs and turn Cranbourne racecourse into a sports and entertainment hub for the local community," he said. Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge warmly welcomed the announcement, saying the development had been in the pipeline for years and would complement well with Bunjil Place in Narre Warren. "We run about a 100 non-race day functions and events," he said. "We run a lot of school valedictory dinners, last week we had three nights in a row. A lot of these schools in this area they're looking for facilities that can cater for more than 500 or 600. "This will be able to cater for groups as small as 20, whether you want to have a little meeting or rehearsal little place and then obviously up to 1400. "You would be able to reshape the room to whatever size you like. The capacity will be significant, with a purpose built stage and proper loading areas," Mr Bainbridge added. "This will become a real central point, a hub for the community. Mr Bainbridge said the convention centre would enhance the gateway to the racing complex. ENDEAVOURING TO BE THE BEST Successful Endeavours has a long and proud association with the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. In the program’s inaugural year in 2010 Successful Endeavours was named the Casey Business of the Year and was joint winner in the Business and Professional Services category and a finalist in the Manufacturer of the Year category. Successful Endeavours won the Business and Professional Services category in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. It was also a nominee last year. This year that proud record continues with another win in the Business and Professional Services category. The Narre Warren based firm designs electronics based products that are intended to be manufactured in Australia. This encompasses infrastructure grade industrial controls, power water and waste monitoring and management, electrical distribution equipment, telemetry devices including the Internet of Things (IoT), security systems, automotive controllers, communications equipment, and even a mobile phone. Founder Ray Keefe said the firm’s aim was to provide affordable, world-class product development services that allow

Mr Keefe said clients get direct access to the potential for huge improvements in product function, reliability and margin through applying the right mix of electronics hardware and software to both new and existing market opportunities. “And we can also manufacture the

product for you if you want that too,” Mr Keefe said. Successful Endeavours was recently involved in helping develop an early detection system that detects equipment faults and vegetation ingress affecting rural powerlines. It helped start-up firm IND Technology with its Early Vegetation Fault Detec-

tion system for SWER (single wire earth return) systems. Based on state-of-the-art high speed digital signal processing technology and specialised RF antenna sensor technology, IND Technology designed an Early Fault Detection system that remotely monitors and detects partial discharges on overhead distribution lines and underground cable systems on a continuous 24 hour basis. Mr Keefe said the the technology was “a world first developed in Melbourne”. “Every second, each device in the field sends a log of sophisticated mathematical data to the web services where it is stored and then passed through to a server cluster that analyses the data and determines the overall electrical health of the network as well as specific fault locations,” Mr Keefe explained. “The technology relies on the atomic clocks on board the GPS satellites as well as some high speed local FPGA processing.” Mr Keefe said EVFD was a great example of technology designed and made in Casey gaining national recognition. “The result is a Victorian based startup now positioned to take this technology nationally and then internationally.”

The sport requires a high level of teamwork while also relying on participants to execute their individual roles. Team members utilise their strengths to maximise the overall team performance. The sisters say they wanted to inspire future athletes by offering a fun, friendly and inclusive atmosphere. The Cranbourne Cup meeting is one of the district’s premier sporting and social events - atttracting huge crowds and the cream of the racing crop. Last year the race was won by the world’s biggest and richest racing stable - Godolphin - when imported galloper Folkswood saluted before going on to run third behind turf champion Winx in the Cox Plate. This year Folkswood returned but was denied by the Mick Price trained Octobello and ridden by local jockey Noel Callow, who always adds a bit of colour to the occasion. This year he did just that by performing a star jump made famous by champion British jockey Frankie Dettori - as he dismounted. The club has a long and proud history Racing commenced at Cranbourne with a two day meeting on 22 and 23 April 1867. Racing ceased in 1941 resuming post World War 2 in 1947. When the club reformed there were 24 men elected to the committee, a marked difference to the nine currently serving on the Committee. The first Cranbourne Cup was won by Toryboy, who two years earlier had won the Melbourne Cup. Cranbourne’s link to the most famous day on the Australian turf continues, now hosting a race meeting on Melbourne Cup Day. In 1947 bookmakers were the only ones taking on-course bets. On-Course Totalisator Betting did not commence until 1954. One of the Champions of the turf, Manikato, won his first start at Cranbourne as a two-year-old in 1978. Manikato went on to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper, Ascot Vale Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas all in 1978. From modest beginnings the turf club’s on course turnover has increased to one of the highest country clubs in this state.

GP Run is tonne of fun!

'Stilt Divas' Chrissy, left, and Bec entertain the crowds. 186587

By Brendan Rees There was a sea of leather and chrome as thousands flocked for in the popular Cranbourne GP Run wave-off on Saturday 27 October. Celebrity guest and comedian Arj Barker headed up the cherry picker to wave the flag for riders heading from High Street to the 2018 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix in Phillip Island. Fun included stalls, food and drink vans, face painting, sausage sizzles and a display from the Cranbourne fire brigade. The Casey Cardinia Foundation, which was the charity partner for the day, helped raise about $1000 which will go towards local community groups. Turn to pages 8 and 9 for more

Minister for Roads and Road Safety Luke Donnellan said the Andrews Government was “getting on with delivering key upgrades to roads across Melbourne’s outer suburbs.” “Drivers will be the big winners as we push on with delivering these key projects - and get on with delivering billions of dollars of road

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said locals knew “just how frustrating congestion” can be along Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road - “that’s why we’re duplicating the road and upgrading intersections to improve journeys and reliability through Cranbourne.” “By upgrading Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, we’re offering a real alternative for north-south travellers and significantly improving access to the south east’s freeway network,” Mr Perera said. “The Liberals did an about face when it came to upgrading our local areas road arterials, Labor is getting on with it.” The Coalition has been contacted for comment.

A notoriously congested arterial road in Cranbourne will be overhauled - eradicating congestion, bringing down travel times and boosting safety. The State Government announced on Thursday 25 October that Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road will be one of 14 key roads to be upgraded as part of a $2.2 billion project across Melbourne’s outer north and south-east. Extra lanes will added in each direction between Thompsons Road and South Gippsland Highway to boost capacity and reduce congestion. The existing roundabout at Berwick-Cranbourne Road will be replaced with traffic lights, with new traffic lights also to be installed on the South Gippsland Highway as well as upgrades

Bunjil turns one in style Bunjil Place's first birthday went off with a bang, with more than 4500 people turning out to Casey's home of arts and entertainment to join in the celebrations on Sunday, 28 October. City of Casey Mayor at the time, Cr Geoff Ablett said the birthday party reflected what Bunjil Place is all about. "In its first 12 months, Bunjil Place has been delivering good times for people of all ages and the first birthday celebration was no exception," he said. "The Listies make you LOL show was a huge hit with families in the theatre, and the By A Thread performance in the Studio had people on the edge of their seats with their amazing acrobatics. "With the sun shining, many families kicked back on beanbags, deck chairs or picnics rugs and soaked up the atmosphere in the plaza with food trucks, live music, roving entertainers, the popular Glam Station, party decoration workshops and of course, free birthday cupcakes." "The day was capped off by the Casey Cares Mayoral Charity Concert, organised by Cr Wayne Smith, to raise money to support Gippsland Farmer Relief." Speaking at the event, Cr Ablett reflected on the first year of Bunjil Place. "Since its opening in October 2017, Bunjil Place has drawn in over 1.46 million people from the community and beyond," he said. "There have been 41 national touring acts that have put on 67 performances, attracting over 26,000 people and generating over $2 million in ticket sales. "We have hosted a huge variety of international, national and local level performances in our theatre and studio, plus many family favourites including Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Bell Shakespeare, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and We Will Rock You." Cr Ablett said the gallery has presented five

"The state-of-the-art library has received over 40,000 visitors per month, membership has increased significantly, and visitors have enjoyed a diverse range of programming, including the ever-popular story times," he said. "The plaza has been brought to life with a variety of activities and events for all ages, including musical performances, live theatre acts, art activities, markets, festivals and movies, which have all been enjoyed by thousands. IN BRIEF

Preacher's prayer By Brendan Rees Councillor Amanda Stapledon has been elected as the new mayor of the City of Casey for 2018-19, with Crs Timothy Jackson and Rosalie Crestani elected as council's deputy mayors.

Reverend David Powys of St John's Cranbourne with his painting depicting the abandoned trail track to Cranbourne East. 186815 ture and "didn't blame" Mr Powys for being frustrated. "He's a great artist and we share his emotions, it's something we desperately need," he said. "We'll playing catch up in so many areas. It was promised back in the 1990s and not delivered." With Labor currently holding the Cranbourne seat by two per cent, Cr Ablett said: "I've been very non-partisan of all parties but the fact we're in a marginal seat this is our

opportunity to really have the best organised Commit to Casey." "Wherever I go and say we need to do road and rail everyone just stands up and applauds." Both parties have promised to upgrade the Cranbourne rail line in the lead up to the state election, and Cr Ablett has assured residents "we will make sure they do it." He said Mr Powys was "right on the money," and "illustrated what the whole of Casey feels; I congratulate him."

Libs pledge $5.9m upgrade By Brendan Rees The State Opposition has responded to Labor pledges to deliver a massive upgrade to Cranbourne South Primary School if elected in next month's State Election. Shadow Minister for Small and Medium Enterprises Neale Burgess announced on Wednesday 24 October that the Liberal Nationals would provide the school with $5.9 million to upgrade Block A, and the administration building including the removal of asbestos. Teachers would also benefit with a brand new staff-room and extra toilets to cater for the growing staff numbers at the school as well as establishing a suitable car park for parents to safely park. Mr Burgess said the upgrade would provide the "very best educational facilities" and fix the "maintenance backlog" left by the Andrews Government. According to Mr Burgess the school had been "badly neglected," and Labor had previously announced it would close the school. "Under a Guy Liberal National Government, Cranbourne South families will get the quality school facilities they deserve and des-

perately need," he said. Liberal candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans also joined Mr Burgess for the announcement at the school. "I am proud to have stood alongside the Cranbourne South community, collecting signatures on a petition that ultimately produced this outcome," Ms Hermans said. "This community can't afford four more years of Labor," she added. Cranbourne South Primary School has nearly 400 students and is one of the fastest growing in the region, the Liberals argue. In August, the Labor Government announced, if re-elected, to invest $5.9 million into the school to completely refurbish and modernise classrooms and facilities in Block A, and upgrade the car park and playing fields. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said "When the Liberals last had the chance, they ripped more than a billion dollars out of the education system. They should never be given the chance to do that again." School council president Jodi Price welcomed the announcement, saying the school was desperate as it had 16 classes currently op-

Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon has been elected as the new mayor of the City of Casey for 2018-19, which will be her second term as mayor having also served for the 2012-13 year. Cr Stapledon was elected unopposed by her fellow councillors at a Special Council Meeting on Monday 29 October, with Crs Timothy Jackson and Rosalie Crestani elected as council's deputy mayors. Having served the City of Casey as a councillor for 11 years, Cr Stapledon said she was thrilled and honoured to be elected to serve as mayor again. "I thank my councillor colleagues for your confidence in electing me to lead over the next 12 months. I work with a great team and know over the coming year we will keep working towards achieving Australia's most liveable city," Cr Stapledon said. "I'm looking forward to embracing the challenges ahead and achieving great outcomes for our community." Cr Stapledon also acknowledged and thanked outgoing mayor Cr Geoff Ablett for his great work over the past 12 months.

Herbie The Love Bug still missing A Cranbourne East man whose car was stolen from his garage while he and his family were asleep has told of his relief after it was recently recovered. But his wife's beloved car - a VW Beetle Herbie replica - which was also stolen during the aggravated burglary has yet to be found. The intruders, who broke into their home by entering a large pet door, grabbed the two sets of car keys from the kitchen bench and made off with both cars on Friday 14 September - while the couple and their two-year old son were sleeping at 1am. Boris Siguenza said he was surprised their two family dogs inside their Baranello Crescent home at the time were not woken. "Unfortunately we weren't savvy enough to know the keys should be in the bedroom or hidden away," he said. "I left my set of keys on the kitchen bench - they quickly grabbed the kitchen bench keys and rolled both cars out." A bag of baby clothes, including their son's favourite shoes were among the items also taken. The VW Beetle with registration plates HER81E is still missing. "Cars can be replaced, the violation of the safety of my family can't," he added. Police have released photographs of the vehicle in the hope that someone spots the vehicle or can provide information about the incident. Anyone with information is asked to contact Senior Constable Budge on 9705 3114. Alternatively you can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or www.crimestoppersvic.com.au and quote incident number 180311951.

Reverend David Powys believes Cranbourne is in danger of "being left behind" with roads and public transport. "Anyone that's driven on the roads knows what a miserable experience it is," the vicar of St John's Cranbourne said. With the population of Cranbourne East/ Clyde area tipped to hit more than 143,000 people in 2041, Mr Powys says there was "nowhere near enough" improvements being made. Mr Powys recently unveiled his painting outside his church depicting the abandoned rail track, overgrown by grass, to Cranbourne East. "I guess I'm just reflecting on the distress of many of my church, and in the community of just how difficult life is becoming as Cranbourne grows," he said. "I think in terms of population we're still going at a huge rate and I think we're in danger of being left behind. "Melbourne as whole has forgotten about the south east," he added In the lead-up to this year's state election, Casey Council announced its biggest advocacy campaign yet, calling on the State Government and Opposition to 'Commit to Casey', in fixing the region's roads and extending the Cranbourne rail. Dozens also turned up to a council led rally in Cranbourne East in October, where residents determined not to stop campaigning until they saw "shovels in the ground" for the Cranbourne rail to be duplicated and extended. Then Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the city of Casey was playing "catch up" in infrastruc-

This year’s awards attracted 84 applicants across 10 categories. During the evening Ms Nixon spoke to 2017 Business of the Year winner Greg Plant, director of Powerplant Project Services. Mr Plant spoke of the boost winning the award gave his business, which had 50 employees this time last year but has now grown to employ 85. After winning the award last year, Mr Plant drove to Big W, filled his car with balloons and “floated into work”.

“We have defined and redefined what success means to us. We have put in place strategic initiatives, accessed new markets and are thinking about what is next and how to plan for it.” He said Powerplant’s success was based on its values of people, performance and pride. He encouraged other business owners to follow their dreams. “If you’ve got an idea, back yourself and work hard. You can do anything.”

“We thought we had a pretty good business, but it was really satisfying to know that someone else thought the same thing,” Mr Plant said. “Staff really appreciated the recognition. Winning the award took the business up a step. It gave us a new view of what was possible. “(Since then) we have really developed at all levels of the business.” Mr Plant said Powerplant had recently launched a graduate program to employ local engineering graduates.

Mr Dunstan said he started SJD Homes 10 years ago searching for a better work life balance. “I was working seven days a week and I wanted to spend more time with my children. The kids are now part of the company which has become like an extended family,” Mr Dunstan said. “We put people first and that has come back to us in spades.“ Mr Dunstan said SJD had grown significantly in recent years and 85 per cent of the revenue generated by the company was spent in the local area. “We are proud to live and work in the area.“ He said SJD liked to give back on “many different levels“ and was building two houses for the homeless, the first in Ashwood and the second in the Casey Cardinia Region. “This is a really big deal for us. There are so many brilliant businesses out there, we didn’t think we’d win. “I open my door to anyone in the room so see what we do. We can benefit each other and grow the region.” Host for the evening, Channel 9 weather presenter Lavinia Nixon, said the judges had a difficult time deciding on the Business of the Year with three firms in the running for the top accolade - SJD Homes, Waverley Industries and Davey Marine.

Hospital for Cranbourne and ambulance services to the growing local community. Ms Richards said only Labor would build a new Cranbourne Community Hospital and deliver the vital health services the public needs. "Locals in the south eastern suburbs shouldn't have to travel into the city to access services like rehab, day surgery and paediatric care and under Labor's plan, they won't have to," she said. Labor say they have reversed the "savage Liberal cuts" and delivered the best ambulance response times on record. New data released shows 88.25 per cent of ambulances arrived at Code 1 incidents within 15 minutes in Cranbourne, Labor argues. Premier Daniel Andrews said: "Only a oncein-a-generation boost to community hospitals will give patients the best care - and only Labor will get it done." The Liberals have been contacted for comment.

sure they do." Ms Richards said for more than 40 years, the school had been at the "heart of our community." "With this investment, we'll make sure it continues to serve local families for years to come," she said. The Labor Government says it has invested more than $3.8 billion to build 70 new schools and upgrade 1,300 schools across the state since coming to office in 2014. Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera said: "Cranbourne Secondary College is a great local school and only Labor will deliver the facilities that students and staff need to achieve their best." Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne, Ann Marie Hermans said Daniel Andrews had lost control of population growth in Cranbourne and as a result, "local schools are feeling the squeeze." "Labor has been in power for 15 of the last 19 years, and have failed to keep up with school infrastructure. This funding from Labor on the eve of the election is nothing but a last ditch attempt to save the seat," she said.

Cranbourne's Integrated Care Centre will be transformed into a new community hospital if Labor is re-elected at the state election. Labor have pledged to replace the ageing Cranbourne Integrated Care Centre with a new community hospital, providing greater capacity for the growing Cranbourne community for services like paediatric care, elective day surgery, diagnostic services and community mental health assessments. It's part of Labor's $675 million fund to build and upgrade community hospitals or urgent care centres in our suburbs and regional towns. Health Minister Jill Hennessy joined Labor Candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards in making the announcement at the centre on Tuesday 30 October. Ms Hennessy said families deserved the peace of mind that the "very best care is just around the corner." It comes as Labor aims to deliver better care

Cranbourne families will get the world-class local school their kids deserve, with a reelected Andrews Labor Government to deliver a massive upgrade to Cranbourne Secondary College. Labor will invest $6.6 million to transform tired facilities at the college with an upgrade to the performing arts centre and refurbishment of the existing gymnasium. This builds on the $10 million already provided by the Andrews Labor Government to upgrade the school. The Liberals slashed $1 billion out of our education system, leaving schools to crumble and decay across the state, the State Government argues. Minister for Education James Merlino joined Labor candidate for Cranbourne MP Pauline Richards in making the announcement at the school on Thursday 25 October. "The Liberals closed schools and cut funding to our education system and given the chance, they'll do it again," Mr Merlino said. "No matter where you live in Victoria, every student deserves to have a great school - a reelected Andrews Labor Government will make

Volunteers Gurmukh Singh and Manjeet Singh aim to build a kitchen with their food van. 186806

$50K project windfall By Brendan Rees

12388226-CG22-18

A group of Sikh volunteers who run a Free Food Van has secured $50,081 through the State Government’s ‘Pick My Project’ community grants initiative. Run by Sikh Volunteers Australia, the food van provides freshly cooked vegetarian food to the people facing tough times in the City of Casey two nights a week. Spokesman Manpreet Singh said the group hoped to use the funding to build their own kitchen in Devon Meadows. “As we are expanding our services, there is a great need to have our own kitchen. So far we are hiring a commercial kitchen to cook our food,” he said. Mr Singh thanked the community for their generous support in voting for their project idea. “Sikhism has a basic concept of free food for anyone without any discrimination. “We have largest free kitchen of the world in Amritsar Punjab where 100 thousands people eat food every day,” Mr Singh added. The food van was launched in March 2017 and currently visits Tooradin Caravan Park from 6pm-6:30pm and Frankston car park from 7pm-8pm every Wednesday and Saturday. The grant was part of the Andrews Government’s ground-breaking program that gives locals the power to choose the projects their community needs.

The recent report in the Age clearly demonstrates why the Casey Council should be investigated by the Local Government Minister. It would appear that their conduct amounts to non-compliance with the Casey Council Code of Conduct. Again it seems that they forget that it is ratepayers' money, not theirs and that Casey Council needs to be held to account. The Casey Council should be acting with integrity and non-favour. In other words, propriety and honesty. Arvo Talvik, President, Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA)

SOCIALLY SPEAKING On 19 October the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about the National Fuel Strike which occurred on Friday, 26 October. Here is how some readers reacted online: Derek Roper: Our government seem to love exporting everything cheap to overseas while we pay exaggerated prices for fuel etc... I hope the strike helps but really its up to them to help us. Belinda Burford: They just put it up earlier this week to cover the shortfall. Troy Ross: No matter what we need it in the end we will pay anything as they know we have to. Ali Uding: It's worth a shot. Power to the people. Boycott the big companies. Ian Earl: How do you think a strike will help. 72 per cent of our oil prices are as a result of world problems like OPEC reducing supply and forcing others to reduce their supply as has recently happened. The high cost of the US dollar and low cost of Aus dollar effects the price. A large proportion of the 32 per cent left goes in taxes. If our government reduced oil taxes where do you think they are going to get the money for other things. They will just increase taxes on other goods or reduce other fees. Rovel Shackleford: No; but a drop in the fuel tax will! Why we still have personal income tax is a mystery to me because we are already taxed to blazes on everything we purchase; oh I know there's a whole tax industry out there that needs a job.

The owner of a Cranbourne towing centre has said he was not "totally surprised" after a fire broke out in his garage during the early morning of Tuesday 30 October. Fire crews from Cranbourne, Narre Warren, Frankston and Hallam brigades were called to the blaze on Cameron Street about 4.40am which was brought under control just after 5am. Police say the exact cause of the fire is yet to be determined and arson chemist investigators were examining the scene at Squires Towing Centre. Manager Stewart Squires said he was "certainly expecting" the fire to occur as he believes a recovered stolen car in the shed was "targeted." "I wasn't totally surprised," he said. "We've had cars re-stolen out of here; one other time in our old place we had a couple stolen out of there. It's not really that new to me. "We deal with this sort of thing all the time because of the nature of the work," Mr Squires said. According to Mr Squires, intruders had gain access via a rear roller door with the fire mainly confined to the shed. "No idea how it was lit ... We haven't looked at any footage yet because we haven't had any power back on." He said one car and a few motorbikes as well as some wiring conduit were burnt "otherwise it's less damage than what I thought initially."

Crowds flock to moto day By Brendan Rees Huge crowds turned out for some high-octane excitement as motorbikes rumbled into the streets of Cranbourne for the City of Casey's biggest annual event. Thousands gathered under blue skies to wave-off motorcyclists who headed en-mass from High Street to the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix on Saturday 27 October. Celebrity guest and comedian Arj Barker headed up the cherry picker, accompanied by the City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett, to conduct the flag wave-off. City of Casey Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon said the atmosphere was electric and "really does bring people together." "It's a real spectacle. We had about just over 7,000 bikes, and we had huge crowds. Everyone was in such great spirits with people giving so generously to the Casey Cardinia Foundation," she said. "Some of dress-ups were hilarious, there were cows, the Muppets, and there was a frog, the cookie monster. "For the ones that attended for the first time they said 'I can't believe this event- it's amazing' something they've seen anywhere else," she added. Volunteers from the Casey Cardinia Foundation were out rattling tins with the community helping raise about $1000 which will go towards local community groups throughout the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. "The Foundation was pleased to be chosen as the partner charity for the GP Run once again. It was a great opportunity for our volunteers to get out amongst the community to let them know about the great work the Foundation does as well as raise much needed funds," the Foundation's director Paul Thomas said. "This year the Foundation was able to assist 20 organisations with a total of more than $80,000 in grants, whilst at the same time increase our funds in corpus to enable greater assistance and sustainability into the future. Anyone wishing to donate can go to caseycardiniafoundation.org," Mr Thomas added. Nineteen-year-old Sarah Heitmann, a student of Narre Warren South's Vocal Performance School had the honour of singing the national anthem. Attractions on the day included market stalls, food and drink vans, workshops for kids, face painting, sausage sizzles and a display from the Cranbourne fire brigade. Casey Radio also broadcast a live-to-air coverage of the event. Ruth Pedersen, who attends every year, honoured her late son Owen, a motorcycle enthusiast, by carrying his helmet. "A lot of the riders acknowledge it and give a wave or a toot. Something to remember him, it is hard," she said. "He started dirt bike riding when he was about 15 or 16. "He used to love going up to the mountains and riding up there. My daughter and I go (to the GP Run) when we can," she said. "Saturday was terrific day -they had really big crowds. Hearing that revving up of the bikes is always good."

CESC endeavours to promote a culture established around mutual respect, understanding and co-operation, which embeds the College’s values.

Rangebank has a well-established successful transition program for new Foundation (Prep) students. Through this wonderful introduction, children feel well prepared for entry into school life.

12404040-LB45-18

Student’s abilities vary, so our programs have been structured to allow for learning to occur on a personalised basis. This is so each child can achieve their highest level of success, particularly in Reading, Writing and Mathematics. Our school is focused on the whole child in all years of learning with ‘The Leader in Me’ program highlighting each child’s leadership capabilities. This program based on Stephen Covey’s, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. A world-renowned program of personal development. Every child can be a leader in different ways and at different tasks.

As principal, I am passionate about consistent quality, Teaching & Learning practices, aligning with an emphasis on student wellbeing. We as a college strongly value collaboration between teachers, parents and students and its effectiveness on students’ learning, engagement and wellbeing. The College is very fortunate to have been awarded the 2017 Victorian Education Excellence Award for their ‘Lift Off’ program, which recognises the work of inspirational educational staff working to improve schools and support young people in developing the skills, courage and abilities to succeed in life.

2018 marks a significant year for Alkira Secondary College, it marks our tenth year of education with the first class of students starting year 7 at Casey Central Secondary College (renamed Alkira Secondary College in 2010) on a temporary school site at Hillsmeade Primary School in 2009.

There are many features of our College that can be highlighted. Some of these include our strong pastoral care program, a one-to-one netbook program and our very successful Senior School program. Visitors are welcome to learn about these programs and more, and I encourage you to make an appointment and come along and see our College in person.

Chris Black “Developing the skills today to thrive in tomorrow’s world” Welcome to St. Peter’s College. We are a proudly Catholic community with a focus on Christ at the centre of our learning. Servicing both the Clyde North and Cranbourne residents, our core business at St. Peter’s College is ‘active learning’. When selecting a secondary school for your child, you need to feel confident in not only what that school can deliver in Year 7, but how the school can provide a stimulating learning environment across the six years. It’s a big decision. Our desire is for students to run excitedly through St. Peter’s College gates to commence their secondary schooling, and walk out at the end of Year 12, with confidence, a sense of purpose, and feeling positive about their lives. Our 21st Century learner will need a skill-set of: critical thinking, effective communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively & creativity. St. Peter’s College strives to provide opportunities for our students to engage and excel in all of these areas. “As a Catholic community, we aspire to lead in faith, guide with 12369125-ACM44-17

Together the new leadership team will embrace the opportunity to provide for a rapidly growing school. We look forward to continuing the development of our programs of excellence and increasing our partnerships in the community, to ensure we continue to provide the best educational experiences and opportunities for all of our students.

These new facilities will enable our College to capitalise on the outstanding work of our teachers and further improve on our academic standards. They will also enhance the capacity to holistically develop our students by supporting their wellbeing and pathways needs. A new Learning Enhancement Centre has also improved our capacity to support students with special needs. This helps our school develop well rounded citizens that are prepared for the world of work or further education, and who can contribute positively as members of the Cranbourne community.

Cranbourne East strives to offer opportunities for all students to succeed, not only through the expected curriculum framework, but also through performing arts, sports, leadership and student voice. Our main goal is that all students will excel in life and discover a pathway that is engaging, meaningful and personally fulfilling to them, whatever that may be.

We believe that learning should be engaging, purposeful and challenging. We aim to develop confident learners, who take ownership of their learning and are proud of their achievements. Why? Because we believe that, every child can achieve!

Our facilities have continuously been modernised over the last 10 years, and I am excited to announce that our new Building & Construction Facility commenced operation in February 2018 servicing the vocational needs of all students in the Casey district. Work is now well underway on Stage 3 of our capital works program and I am pleased to report the opening of our new Visual Arts Centre on August 20. It is very satisfying to see our students being educated in such modern and well equipped classrooms purpose built for the visual arts. We now look forward to the construction of The Science & Technology Wing, The Well-being Centre and significant landscaping works in the school yard. It is important to continue to upgrade and modernize our facilities so that we can provide a current and relevant curriculum that effectively prepares our students for the modern world.

At CESC, we pride ourselves on a proactive approach to creating a safe, supportive learning environment where students can develop leadership skills and student voice while also growing in confidence and self-esteem. The central philosophy of the college is ‘Giving every student, every opportunity to exceed their potential and provide a high quality pathway to success.’

Cranbourne Secondary College has a long and proud history of servicing the educational needs of the Cranbourne community. We celebrated our 40th anniversary in 2016 and it reminded us all of our very strong links with the citizens of Cranbourne who continue to make us their school of choice. During our 40 year history our school community has become more multicultural, and with the help of our Harmony and Multipride programs, we have maintained a highly inclusive and tolerant school population. We are also excited by the launch of our Parents Association who have been positively contributing to our school operation during 2018.

Green thumbs get digging By Brendan Rees Students have rolled up their sleeves for a day of planting native trees at Clyde Primary School on Friday 26 October. The tree planting was coordinated by Cardinia Catchment Landcare who teamed with students from Alkira Secondary College and Clyde Primary School to help promote the natural biodiversity of Clyde. Clyde Primary School education support teacher Karen Carpenter said the day was an opportunity to teach children about how to protect the natural environment. "The 12 VCAL students from Alkira worked all day planting, guarding, spreading mulch and watering working alongside ten of Clyde Primary school's students," she said. "The students all expressed the day was surprisingly fun." She added the day could be the start a long term relationship between Landcare and schools to help restore the environment at a "very critical time for our earth and Australia."

Shama and Baneen from Alkira Secondary College enjoy some time out of the classroom.

Sam Smith of Cardinia Catchment Landcare, Mansoor, Thomas Raymonda also of Cardinia Catchment Landcare, Shama and Baneen, Paige, Josie, Chloe and Julio were all smiles after their planting efforts. 186799

There’ll be plenty of racing action at Cranbourne on Melbourne Cup day. 147294

Racegoers will be able to experience all of the action from the best vantage points.

Cup day returns to Cranny By Russell Bennett What better way for south east locals to celebrate 'the race that stops the nation' than at the Cranbourne Racecourse, right in the heart of the City of Casey? Next Tuesday, Cranbourne will hold its second Melbourne Cup day event - after the success of last year's. "It's a big, big day for us," Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Nail Bainbridge said. "We're delighted this year that it's a full TAB meeting with full TAB status so it's shown live around Australia on SKY Channel and covered by the TAB. "It's an early start - our first race is at 11.30(am) and the first at Flemington is at 10.50, so the gates will open at 10.30.

"There's something for everyone, and it'll be a great day." In addition to the racing action, there'll be live bands and plenty of entertainment on the course's new deck. There'll be a significant focus on families and kids on Cup day this year, with a range of free rides and activities. There'll also be a sanctioned barbecue competition featuring around 40 competitors. "That, in itself, will be a fairly major drawcard as well," Bainbridge said. "There's pretty much something for everyone. "Last year was the first year we were fortunate enough to get the opportunity. "Melbourne Cup day is one of the great

sporting days, and it's certainly the best race day in Australia. "To be afforded the opportunity to run a race meeting on that day is an absolute bonus for us. It's something we tried to secure for a number of years, and to be able to get it last year was a great bonus. "We just think it'll continue to build, and build into a pretty significant event in Casey." And the Melbourne Cup day event is here to stay. "We see it as an important part of our fixture going forward, and a pretty important part of our spring racing carnival," Bainbridge said. "Obviously we've got the two-day TAB Cranbourne Cup carnival and we move into Melbourne Cup day, and then we have Tri-

Codes which is a pretty significant event as well, so we've got three really big days within about six weeks." Patrons at Cranbourne on Tuesday will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with jockeys and trainers from all over the state, all while enjoying the racing action from the mounting yard to the winning post. Racegoers are encouraged to embrace the notion of 'country casual', where they can enjoy backing a winner from the bars and bookmakers on course. There's also plenty of outside, grandstand seating for those looking to watch the races from an undercover vantage point. Parking is free, and there are a range of dining packages available on the day.

WGCA’s plea for help as umpire numbers drop away By Russell Bennett There’s no two ways about it - the West Gippsland Cricket Association is running worryingly short of official umpires. But many in and around the association may not realise just how short. At this stage, there are only 15 umpires on the official panel. To put that into context, there are 12 games across the Premier, District, and Sub-District divisions each week. On the weekend, there were just 11 total registered umpires available. It’s already at the point where the league can no longer guarantee two umpires for each Premier division game. It’s a worrying prospect for first XI games set to decide the eventual make-up of the finals. Respected WGCA umpire and association vice president Mike McKenna spoke to the News on Saturday about the situation currently facing the competition. “There’s a District game today - Cardinia versus Tooradin - where there’s no umpire,” McKenna said of the Round 4 clash between two traditional rivals. “We’ve now said that, based on the limited numbers, we’ll have one umpire stand in each A Grade game - including Premier. “There’s not necessarily going to be two umpires for every Premier game. “When I first joined the association, we had 28, 32 umpires on the books and you’d miss out and sometimes you’d find yourself umpir24 STAR NEWS

ing a B Grade game.” McKenna puts the situation down to one key factor - LOVE. That is - Lack Of Volunteer Effort. “There are a lot of clubs who have a lot of senior players who’ve retired and go off and do other things,” McKenna explained. “But this isn’t just an issue for cricket - it’s football, it’s every sport. “Still, for cricket - both junior and senior cricket - it’s exceptionally difficult.” The WGCA is after anyone who loves the game - such as former players - to give something back when they can. “It’s to give something back to the game, or just enjoy some time in the middle,” McKenna said. “You’re the number one spectator and you’re out there for some great play, and you’re right in the thick of it. “I got the chance to see one of the best catches I’ve seen in my life - (Clyde skipper and keeper-batsman) Kiefer Peries down legside. It was an insane catch, and I saw it right there from square leg.” And for those interested, the league is coming to the party to encourage new umpires to get involved. “It’s paying for people to do their online accreditation, and it’s paying their first year membership fees - which is about $140 worth of contribution that we’re offering for anyone who wants to get involved,” McKenna said.

The WGCA is desperately in need of more umpires to join its ranks. 186783 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

“It’s online, it takes 25 minutes to do, and anyone who’s got any cricket nous could do it. “Then they’d have someone stand with them for the first couple of games they umpire before we leave them to it.” McKenna is a former player who first got involved in umpiring when an umpire asked him an all too familiar question - one that many players or former players would be asked at cricket grounds each week: “Mate, if you think you can do a better job, why don’t you have a go?” For anyone who’s willing to get involved in helping the competition, all they have to do is email Ian Fuller at wgca@umpire.cricketvictoria.com.au. Official umpires are paid for their time.

A great honour for Brown For Neil Brown, a love of greyhound racing came naturally. After all, growing up within walking distance - albeit a long walk - from Sandown Park made attending Thursday night races a perfect pastime. Brown, the current chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club - among many other roles - has been involved with greyhound racing for 50 years and was recently awarded the Ken Carr Medal at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards. The Ken Carr Medal - named in honour of the late Ken Carr, a legendary Victorian greyhound racing administrator - is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry. Completely humbled by the award, Brown reflected on his journey within the sport. “The awards are not something you even think about or look for. I’ve been involved since I was a teenager and it was 1968 when I started going regularly and I’ve dabbled into everything you possibly could in regards to the greyhounds, so I haven’t left any stone unturned,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed every aspect - from the handson training and a bit of breeding, to involvement in the media through radio and writing also... There hasn’t been too much that I haven’t got involved in and even got into some TV work too.” Brown’s love for greyhound racing began when he as lining up for football finals tickets. “I was about 16 and was waiting overnight at the MCG for football finals tickets and someone said you can have your spot saved in the queue by other people and have a couple of hours off,” he said. “A friend of mine said we should go across to Olympic Park to watch the greyhounds and I sort of fell in love with it from there. “I grew up in Springvale, so it was a natural

progression to go to Sandown Park which was virtually within walking distance of my home. “We used to get in for free through a hole in the fence out the back and now I’m chairman of the club, so it’s been quite a meteoric rise over a long period of time.” It’s fair to say Brown has repaid the club for those free entries back in the day, with his tireless work having helped drive greyhound racing at Sandown - and nationally for that matter - to great heights. Brown’s work on ensuring the proud history of the sport is saved for generations to come has been tremendous. “I really took to the historic side of it and I’ve tried to maintain it and preserve it,” he said. “I was very fascinated by the old-timers I used to meet and got friendly with - many of them had countless stories; just story after story of the different periods of greyhound racing and I had such an involvement and memory of my own, so it came naturally to take on the historic side of it.” Having seen some of the very best dogs that have ever raced, there are two who stand out in Brown’s mind as the best he’s witnessed. “I’ve always maintained, up until probably the last year and a half, that Zoom Top - who raced in the late 1960s to early 1970s - was the best I’d ever seen and her records speak for that,” he said. “I think Fanta Bale, who is our recent champion, is probably close to being her equal - I don’t think there’s much between the two of them.” Having been in the industry for 50 years, is Brown considering slowing down? “I don’t think so. I don’t think my passion for the sport will diminish, so I’ll stay involved in a few things and it keeps your mind active as you get older.” There’s no doubt that greyhound racing is greater for Neil Brown’s involvement and the Ken Carr Medal is recognition of half a century of dedicated service to the sport.

Pilon piles on the runs By Russell Bennett DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 2 Berwick has reconfirmed itself as a genuine threat in this Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after an eyecatching win over Springvale South on the Bloods’ home turf. Former state player and Victorian Premier keeper-batsman Nathan Pilon was simply awe-inspiring at the top of the Berwick order after the visitors were sent in to bat. He blasted a whopping 176 not out as he steered his side to 3/251 from their 40 overs, with Jordan Cleland (38) the only other Bears batsman to reach 20. The Bloods fell well short in their reply, dismissed for 177 in the 37th over with star all-rounder Steve Spoljaric (a run-a-ball 58) once again top-scoring for the side. Brendan Rose, still new to the Bears, has continued to make a profound impact for Berwick - this time snaring 4/24 from his eight overs; while Darren De Souza (2/22), Isaiah Jassal (2/31), and Cory Bevan (2/31) all snared two scalps apiece. Meanwhile, new Buckley Ridges skipper South African first class player - David White once again showcased his class with an unbeaten 85 as his side chased down Heinz Southern Districts’ 6/146 with seven wickets in hand (3/148). White is yet to be dismissed in Buckley Ridges colours this season, with Saturday’s clinical knock coming off the back of an un-

beaten 105 against Dingley in the Twenty20 competition on Wednesday. On Saturday, he and DJ Watson (28) put on a 62-run opening stand to have their side well on the path to victory. Earlier in HSD’s innings Watson also a real impact with ballin-hand, snaring 2/27 from his eight overs while Susantha Pradeep took an eye-catching 2/2 from five overs. Michael Davies topscored for HSD with his 58 from the middleorder. North Dandenong, meanwhile, stunned

the reigning premiers in their one-dayer at Ben Kavanagh Reserve in Mordialloc. After being sent in to bat, North Dandy compiled 7/230 from their 40 overs - thanks largely to Akshay Ballal’s second Turf 1 ton in as many huts so far this campaign. Batting at number three, he reached 103 before finally succumbing to Mordialloc star Ian Daniel (1/30). But by then, the damage had already well and truly been done. The home side’s reply never really got out of second gear after losing a string of early

wickets. At one stage they were sitting on a precarious 5/53 before ultimately reaching 9/144 from their 40 overs. In the remaining game of an actionpacked second round of Turf 1 action, a stellar century from opener Leigh Booth (101) came in a losing effort for Hallam Kalora Park against St Mary’s. After Hallam reached 7/179 from their 40 overs, the visitors made light work of the chase - reaching 3/180 in the 35th over thanks to 92 from skipper Kaushalya Gajasinghe, and an unbeaten 73 from Ruwantha Kellepotha.

Uni prevails over Panthers in Victorian Premier thriller By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET Melbourne University escaped from Shepley Oval in Dandenong with the most thrilling of Victorian Premier Cricket wins on Saturday. Batting first, Melbourne Uni recovered from the loss of the early wickets of Tom Rogers (9) and Yousaf Iqbal (9) at 1/12 and 2/28 respectively to bounce back to 2/108 thanks to an 80-run stand from opener AJ Gregory (44) and Isaiah Borgas (80). With Gregory’s dismissal - run out by Ed Newman - Borgas combined with the rest of the middle order to mount an ultimately telling 6/230 from their 50 overs. Skipper James McNeil (15), Fergus McKenna (24), and Liam Scammell (32 not out) all made invaluable contributions in an innings where - clearly - every run counted. Akshat Buch (2/32) and Peter Sweeney (2/44) were the leading wicket-takers for Dandenong. The Panthers lost star skipper Tom Donnell for just nine early in their reply at 1/16. But when either Donnell or Brett Forsyth falls early, the other invariably takes up the scoring load and that’s exactly what Forsyth did on Saturday. He combined with Newman (28) for a valuable 50-run second wicket stand to get the ship back on course, and then later for a 100-run stand with returning Test paceman James Pattinson (46) for the fourth wicket. Crucially for Pattinson, and the Australian national set-up, he opened the bowling for the Panthers earlier in the day and got through his 10 overs - finishing with 1/42. But in Dandenong’s reply to Melbourne Uni, they lost Forsyth (82), Pattinson, and Sweeney (1) all within the space of three runs to go from being 3/177 at one stage to 6/180. From there it was up to the likes of Cam Forsyth (32 not out), Jacques Augustin (12) and James Wilcock (4) to mount a rescue mission. 26 STAR NEWS

chanan smashing a near run-a-ball 154 from the top of the order. Keeper-batsman Sam Harper (47), Blake Thomson (60), and skipper Matt Brown (30 not out) also gave the Swans’ bowlers plenty of headaches. In their reply, the visitors were rolled for 189 in 42 overs, with Jared Maxwell topscoring with 62 and Kieran Elliott (3/36) and Brad Melville (3/39) taking three wickets apiece for Melbourne Uni. Casey-South Melbourne, meanwhile, was no match for Melbourne in their encounter at Albert Ground.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, Melbourne got on the front foot immediately as opener Meyrick Buchanan (154 not out) was at his destructive best as he blasted 15 fours and three sixes. Blake Thompson (60) and Sam Harper (47) also contributed to Casey’ demise as they posted a total of 2/304 in 50 overs. Facing a tough task to chase down a big total, Casey-South Melbourne struggled to establish key partnerships as wickets fell at crucial times throughout their innings. Jared Maxwell (62) top-scored for the Swans in a strong performance, but his teammates continued to fall around him. The Swans lost their final five wickets for a measly 22 runs as the tail failed to make any strong contributions. Kieran Elliott (3/36) and Brad Melville (3/39) helped dismiss Casey-South Melbourne for just 189 runs in 42 overs. MPCA - PROVINCIAL ROUND 4 (DAY ONE) Pearcedale will have their work cut out for them this coming weekend after Mornington took control of their clash on day one. Having won the toss, Mornington elected to bat and opener Matt Foon (43) was superb from the opening ball. Not to be outdone, Ben Clements (105) scored a magnificent century as he combined with Sam Wiese (48) for a dominant 105-run partnership. Pearcedale’s Sam Frawley (2/21) was the pick of the bowlers as Mornington posted an imposing total of 8/276 off 80 overs. Langwarrin posted a strong total against Peninsula OB in the first day of their clash. A 154-run partnership between Matthew Prosser (96), who fell agonisingly short of a century, and Travis Campbell (70) set the innings up beautifully. Sam Prosser (31 not out) worked well with the tail to ensure a commanding total of 9/295 was reached. In other matches, Mt Eliza (8/203) batted first against Flinders, while Baxter (6/318) is in a commanding position against Sorrento. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

A tough task at Cranbourne

Their perfect week With all nine teams recording a win this week, Cranbourne Bowls chief John McKenna could not wipe the smile off his face and was almost lost for words in the aftermath of a stunning series of performances. Well, almost. He went on to gloat: "What a fantastic result for the club - I am so proud of our club today, this is a fantastic result from every club member and the club is flying in every way. The teams are winning, everyone is happy and the club is looking forward to infrastructure improvements in the near future, well done everyone." Side 1 Division 2 Playing away and coming off a great win last week, it was another excellent result for Cranbourne - defeating Edithvale by eight shots with three rinks recording wins. Skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield and his team won another close one to give them four wins out of four for the year so far. The form team on the day, winning by nine shots, was skip Frank Byrne and his crew of Graeme Wood, John McKenna and Neil 'Buddy' Drummond. Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Edithvale 76. Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 Playing at home, skip Lynne Wood and her crew of Joy McLisky, Joyce Pearce and Maureen Cameron teamed well to give the ladies a 16shot buffer that enabled a very good 21-shot victory overall. The opposition was starved of opportunities to score due to some very good bowls coming in from the Cranbourne ladies. Cranbourne Ladies 64 (14 points) defeated Montmorency 43. Side 2 Division 3 Skip Chris Griffiths was back in top form, supported by his crew of Vic Buttera, Brian Caddell, and Tony Collins - who won by 12 shots. This was enough to give victory by seven shots in the end against Mulgrave Country Club playing at home on a superbly-prepared grass green. Cranbourne 88 (14 points) defeated Mulgrave CC 81. Side 3 Division 5 Cranbourne secured maximum points against Willow lodge with a margin of 38 shots - very impressive from all four rinks.

It was not a good day for Hampton Park's Midweek Pennant Division 2 bowlers when they travelled to Cranbourne. Playing on their grass green left the Parkers wanting. Richard, Lou, Shane and skip Helen lost 1126; Vince, Jen, Denise and skip Neville lost 1229; and Geoff, Janice, Ellen and skip Christine lost 16-26. Hampton Park 0-53 to Cranbourne 16-81. Playing at Pakenham on their fast top green was a difficult task but the Saturday Pennant, Division 2 Parkers stayed in the race, only going down by 11 shots at the finish. The one winning rink was that of Geoff, William, Chris and skip Steven - 25-21. Matt, Neville, Shane and skip Mark lost 15-18; while Ellen, Christine, Larry and skip Warwick were beaten 18-22. Ken, Helen, Sean and skip John Nunan lost 14-22. Hampton Park 2-72 to Pakenham 16-83. In Division 4, Hampton Park travelled to Edithvale and had an overall win by 12 shots. The big win for the day by 22 shots was that of Vince, John Rogers, Toni and skip Craig 3412. Getting up by five shots was Richard, John Standeven, Ian and skip Ray 21-16; while Lyle, Jen, Marion and skip Denise missed out by one shot - 18-19. Val, Trevor, Ron and skip went down 12-26. Hampton Park 14-85 to Edithvale 4-73. The only home game was against Chelsea with the six-a-side Parkers picking up 12 points. Troy, David and skip Gavin missed by three shots, while Janice, Gary and skip Bill got up by nine shots. Hampton Park 12-41 to Chelsea 2-35.

Cranbourne Midweek Side 2 Open bowler, Scott De Piazza. Skip Hans Worstelling had an armchair ride by his crew of Isobel Partington, Shane Morrison and Peter De Lisle, who all bowled very well with 23 shots up. Cranbourne 92 (18 points) defeated Willow Lodge 54. Side 4 Division 7 Skip Rob Sorensen and his crew of Jess O'Day, Derek Maguire and Frank Coulter won by an impressive 15 shots and the side won by 36 shots up on the day. Cranbourne 97 (18 points) defeated Carrum 61. Side 5 Six a side Skip Allen Skurrie and his team members Stan Williams and Graeme Roberson had a good day, winning by 19 shots which contributed to the 12-shot victory against Churchill Waverley. Cranbourne 42 (12 points) defeated Churchill Waverley 30. Midweek Bowls Midweek bowls results this week were:

Cranbourne Division 1 ladies skips Lynne Wood and Isobel Partington. Cranbourne 2 Division 2 Open 81 (16 points) defeated Hampton Park 39. Cranbourne 3 Division 3 Open 73 (16 points) defeated Churchill Waverley 51. Cranbourne 4 six a side Open 48 (14 points) defeated Narre Warren 22.

Narre’s inconsistent run continues Narre Warren's inconsistent Midweek Pennant bowls season continued with only one of its three teams scoring a win. Division 2 was at Fountain Gate against Cardinia Waters and finished in front. The win was led by Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar who won 30-10. Eric Sydenham, Reg Young, Wally Finlayson and Wilma Stevenson also won (2017) but Geoff Ampt Wilma Haringsam, Brent Hone and Peter Hayden went down 16-25. Narre Warren (1) 14-66 defeated Cardinia Waters (1) 2-52. Division 3 travelled to Mulgrave Country Club. The rink of Stan Bulmer, Brian Fraser, Keith Mark and Geoff Miller was the only winning rink (14-13). Arthur Fitt, Janice Moran, Colin Groom and Judy Naughton went down 17-24 and Pam Uren, Ernesto Vergara, Philip Howard and Peter Groom went down 10-27. Narre Warren (2) 2-41 lost to Mulgrave CC (4) 14-64. The A (six-a-side) outfit was at Cranbourne, but suffered another loss. The rink of Jeanette Cox, Nancy Pugh and Helen McCarthy was closest (16-21), while Susan Hawkins, Jacqueline Moody and Truus Hennemaan lost 6-27. Narre Warren (3) 0-22 lost to Cranbourne (4) 14-48. Saturday Saw more mixed fortunes. Division 3 lost its first game for the season at Chelsea. The rink of Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson was the only winning rink (28-21). John Wright, Tracey Storm, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm just missed out (16-19), as did Colin Groom, Percy Herath, Ralph Devonshire and Jim Millar (1519). Close ones for Berwick The fourth round of Saturday Pennant bowls saw some very close matches with only a few shots separating the winning teams. Berwick sides played five matches at away venues this week with three matches played at home and the eighth side having had a Bye. The number one side from Berwick managed to notch up a win against Pakenham by a narrow four-shot margin, as did its sixth side against Dandenong Club by only three shots. The ninth side in the Berwick brigade won a hard-fought match against Pakenham to notch up creditable three-shot win. Berwick's fourth side continued its winning run with a very convincing win against Moorabbin with an impressive 47-shot margin to boost their overall percentage. The seventh side came home from a trip to Beaumaris after having a had good win with the rink of Paul Hunt again winning well - not quite up to the 40-shot win of last week against Hampton, but still very satisfied with the result nonetheless. Berwick's midweek sides are starting to find their feet and have managed to pick up a couple of wins as the confidence starts to build. It's early in the season so there are signs of the beginnings of good things to come.
