Ms Edgar has spent the past 10 years sending her clients all over the world, through her mobile travel agency business, TravelManagers (Narre Warren South). In her acceptace speech Ms Edgar said she had liked “every moment“ of the past 10 years running her own businesses. “I’ll keep slugging away, onwards and upwards and enjoy the journey,“ she told the assembled audience. Ms Edgar says her goal is to enhance her clients’ overall travel experience through designing personalised, customised and tailor-made leisure holidays. “I enjoy combining my passions of travel and photography, and I design customised travel journeys, specialising in cruise, rail and family holidays,“ Ms Edgar said. Her passion for travel has taken her to more than 40 countries. Her own love affair with travel began as a child, when she was taken on family holidays, both overseas and on road trips around Australia after which she was firmly bitten by the travel bug. It was an easy decision to follow her passion for travel and turn it into a career. “Being a personal travel manager is a very positive and great job to do, and is one that I’m passionate about – creating, planning and organising all sorts of holidays, which meet and exceed my client’s expectations and

Ray and Junette Keefe and the team at Successful Endeavours.

ENDEAVOURING TO BE THE BEST Successful Endeavours has a long and proud association with the Casey Cardinia Business Awards. In the program’s inaugural year in 2010 Successful Endeavours was named the Casey Business of the Year and was joint winner in the Business and Professional Services category and a finalist in the Manufacturer of the Year category. Successful Endeavours won the Business and Professional Services category in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016. It was also a nominee last year. This year that proud record continues with another win in the Business and Professional Services category. The Narre Warren based firm designs electronics based products that are intended to be manufactured in Australia. This encompasses infrastructure grade industrial controls, power water and waste monitoring and management, electrical distribution equipment, telemetry devices including the Internet of Things (IoT), security systems, automotive controllers, communications equipment, and even a mobile phone. Founder Ray Keefe said the firm’s aim was to provide affordable, world-class product development services that allow

Mr Keefe said clients get direct access to the potential for huge improvements in product function, reliability and margin through applying the right mix of electronics hardware and software to both new and existing market opportunities. “And we can also manufacture the

product for you if you want that too,” Mr Keefe said. Successful Endeavours was recently involved in helping develop an early detection system that detects equipment faults and vegetation ingress affecting rural powerlines. It helped start-up firm IND Technology with its Early Vegetation Fault Detec-

tion system for SWER (single wire earth return) systems. Based on state-of-the-art high speed digital signal processing technology and specialised RF antenna sensor technology, IND Technology designed an Early Fault Detection system that remotely monitors and detects partial discharges on overhead distribution lines and underground cable systems on a continuous 24 hour basis. Mr Keefe said the the technology was “a world first developed in Melbourne”. “Every second, each device in the field sends a log of sophisticated mathematical data to the web services where it is stored and then passed through to a server cluster that analyses the data and determines the overall electrical health of the network as well as specific fault locations,” Mr Keefe explained. “The technology relies on the atomic clocks on board the GPS satellites as well as some high speed local FPGA processing.” Mr Keefe said EVFD was a great example of technology designed and made in Casey gaining national recognition. “The result is a Victorian based startup now positioned to take this technology nationally and then internationally.”

Raise a cheer for Evolve All Stars, winner of this year’s award for Best New Business. The Cranbourne West business was established by three sisters, Ascha, Bronte and Gemma, who are passionate at all star cheerleading. All star cheerleading is an athletic sport that involves many components put together in a 2 and a half minute routine involving stunting, tumbling, jumping and dance. The sport requires a high level of teamwork while also relying on participants to execute their individual roles. Team members utilise their strengths to maximise the overall team performance. The sisters say they wanted to inspire future athletes by offering a fun, friendly and inclusive atmosphere. They say Evolve All Stars is a place where athletes can “evolve” their skills both on and off the floor. Their visions seems to be working with enthusiastic support from parents

THE BEST TURF ON EARTH TOURISM Sponsor

Winner Cranbourne Turf Club Finalists Safir Tours Exodus Travel Agency

The Cranbourne Turf Club has crossed the winner’s post in first place, picking up the award for best Tourism business. The turf club has evolved into one of the City of Casey’s premier entertainment facilities, with thoroughbred racing throughout the year and night race meetings running from October to May. The Cranbourne Racing Centre is the only centre in Victoria that conducts three codes of racing - thoroughbred, harness and greyhound. It has become a destination venue and not only for racegoers. The club also hosts many non-race day functions including birthdays, weddings, school formals and graduations, gala balls, conferences, product launches, carnivals, birthdays and Christmas celebrations. The Cranbourne Cup meeting is one of the district’s premier sporting and social events - atttracting huge crowds and the cream of the racing crop. Last year the race was won by the world’s biggest and richest racing stable - Godolphin - when imported galloper Folkswood saluted before going on to run third behind turf champion Winx in the Cox Plate. This year Folkswood returned but was denied by the Mick Price trained Octobello and ridden by local jockey Noel Callow, who always adds a bit of colour to the occasion. This year he did just that by performing a star jump made famous by champion British jockey Frankie Dettori - as he dismounted. The club has a long and proud history Racing commenced at Cranbourne with a two day meeting on 22 and 23 April 1867. Racing ceased in 1941 resuming post World War 2 in 1947. When the club reformed there were 24 men elected to the committee, a marked difference to the nine currently serving on the Committee. The first Cranbourne Cup was won by Toryboy, who two years earlier had won the Melbourne Cup. Cranbourne’s link to the most famous day on the Australian turf continues, now hosting a race meeting on Melbourne Cup Day. In 1947 bookmakers were the only ones taking on-course bets. On-Course Totalisator Betting did not commence until 1954. One of the Champions of the turf, Manikato, won his first start at Cranbourne as a two-year-old in 1978. Manikato went on to win the Blue Diamond Stakes, Golden Slipper, Ascot Vale Stakes and the Caulfield Guineas all in 1978. From modest beginnings the turf club’s on course turnover has increased to one of the highest country clubs in this state.

Property Lift out

Roundabout way By Jessica Anstice

Inspiration starts here

Narre Warren South resident Geoff Warner is fed up with the road works on Pound Road/Shrives Road. The new roundabout has been under construction for about 13 months and is still to be completed.

“I feel concerned for learner drivers in this area because if they’re driving this road, it’s actually quite dangerous.” Member for Narre Warren South Judith Graley said, “It’s been a long drawn out process and I can assure everyone I have been on the back of the minister’s office to get this project finished. “Residents have been very patient and some have been unhappy about the project but overall residents are happy the project is finally in its final stages,” she said. Mr Warner said, “Politicians in general; they

don’t drive these roads. “If these politicians had to drive these roads morning and night themselves, I believe their actions would be very different to what they presently are. “Coming out of my road onto Shrives Road has steadily got worse because of the growth and a lot of movement from cars from Hampton Park to Fountain Gate and vice versa. “Particularly from 3pm onwards, the traffic can be queued right past Dee Wy Road, you can’t get out of the street because of the traffic is blocking.”

FACTORY DIRECT BLINDS FOR LESS

City of Casey strategic advisor of transport Paul Hamilton said, “The City of Casey welcomes this important project, which has been a major priority for council for many years. “It will see the removal of an intersection that the community has been advocating for, for a long time.” Mr Warner strongly suggested that Pound Road needed to be duplicated. VicRoads has no current plans to duplicate Pound Road. About 30,000 vehicles use this section of Pound Road every day.

After nearly 13 months, works on the $7.5 million roundabout at the Pound Road and Shrives Road intersection in Hampton Park is still to be completed. According to VicRoads, significant service relocations and processes for land acquisition resulted in an extended timeline for the project. “I called VicRoads and they’ve had issues with the service station with purchase of land and underground services,” Narre Warren South resident Geoff Warner said. “Why are they undertaking these jobs in the first place if they’re not capable of dealing with small underground issues? “These issues to my knowledge are typical to any road upgrade.” The new two-lane roundabout is part of a project that has included improved street lighting, new footpaths and service relocations to enable road widening. “The problem is there are actually one and three quarter lanes instead of two lanes when approaching the roundabout from the western direction, from Hallam Road, travelling east towards Narre Warren Station,” Mr Warner said. “You don’t make roads one and three quarter lanes. People don’t know what to do. “They could have removed and realigned the concreate curbing to adjust it. One metre more is all they needed.” Works on the roundabout began in September 2017. The roundabout is now operating with minor site works including landscaping and final road surfacing to be complete by early 2019. “It’s expected to be finished at the end of this year which gives them 15 months to build a roundabout,” Mr Warner said. “I believe Americans can build big buildings in that time. They could partially rebuild the twin towers. “There are a real sparse number of contractors there.” Mr Warner said his major concern is the lack of attention to detail with the project. “They haven’t addressed some minor issues and because they are very minor it’s been overlooked,” he said. “It’s like the planning has been done on paper but no one has driven the road and felt the road to know the issues that really need to be addressed.

Ms Alexander said the new secondary project will draw on the experiences of the successful Kitchen Garden Program, which has been running in primary schools for 17 years. "Now secondary school students will have the chance to experience the joys of growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing fresh, seasonal delicious food, just like students in the primary schools running the Kitchen Garden Program," she said.

The Berwick Men's Discussion Group started in 2009 and will shortly reach 10 years of service to the City of Casey. Men's discussion groups were first established in NSW in the late 1990's. They were set up in recognition of the unique issues faced by many men as they near or enter retirement. Since then many groups have commenced, using the same principals and continue to function successfully with men growing in stature as a result of their participations. "The aim was to create a safe male sharing environment where men can meet and discuss matters with confidence and trust, on issues that may affect their daily lives and to provide support, encouragement and assistance while coping with various stages of lifestyle changes," Berwick group facilitator Brian Regan said. "The meetings have no set agenda take no minutes and have a privacy agreement between participants. "We welcome other like-minded seniors

Mayfield Ward Councillor Amanda Stapledon has been elected as the new mayor of the City of Casey for 2018-19, which will be her second term as mayor having also served for the 201213 year. Cr Stapledon was elected unopposed by her fellow councillors at a Special Council Meeting on Monday 29 October, with Crs Timothy Jackson and Rosalie Crestani elected as council's deputy mayors. Having served the City of Casey as a councillor for 11 years, Cr Stapledon said she was thrilled and honoured to be elected to serve as mayor again. "I thank my councillor colleagues for your confidence in electing me to lead over the next 12 months. I work with a great team and know over the coming year we will keep working towards achieving Australia's most liveable city," Cr Stapledon said. "I'm looking forward to embracing the challenges ahead and achieving great outcomes for our community." Cr Stapledon also acknowledged and thanked outgoing mayor Cr Geoff Ablett for his great work over the past 12 months.

Bunjil Place's first birthday went off with a bang, with more than 4500 people turning out to Casey's home of arts and entertainment to join in the celebrations on Sunday, 28 October. City of Casey Mayor at the time, Cr Geoff Ablett said the birthday party reflected what Bunjil Place is all about. "In its first 12 months, Bunjil Place has been delivering good times for people of all ages and the first birthday celebration was no exception," he said. "The Listies make you LOL show was a huge hit with families in the theatre, and the By A Thread performance in the Studio had people on the edge of their seats with their amazing acrobatics. "With the sun shining, many families kicked back on beanbags, deck chairs or picnics rugs and soaked up the atmosphere in the plaza with food trucks, live music, roving entertainers, the popular Glam Station, party decoration workshops and of course, free birthday cupcakes." "The day was capped off by the Casey Cares Mayoral Charity Concert, organised by Cr Wayne Smith, to raise money to support Gippsland Farmer Relief." Speaking at the event, Cr Ablett reflected on the first year of Bunjil Place. "Since its opening in October 2017, Bunjil Place has drawn in over 1.46 million people from the community and beyond," he said. "There have been 41 national touring acts that have put on 67 performances, attracting over 26,000 people and generating over $2 million in ticket sales. "We have hosted a huge variety of international, national and local level performances in our theatre and studio, plus many family favourites including Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, Bell Shakespeare, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and We Will Rock You." THE LOWDOWN Q&A

Berwick photographer Catherine Smith

1

Get supplies. Before you begin cleaning ensure you have everything you need to do so. Essentials include, a brush and shovel, gloves, disinfectant, bleach, furniture and glass polish, sponges and paper towels.

2

Declutter. Every few months you should take time out to declutter your home. Before your spring clean is the perfect opportunity to do so. Gather unwanted, old or broken items such as toys, books, bed linen, clothes or even furniture. Sort everything into piles for charity, storage or rubbish. This is the first step for tidying your home. You might even feel a bit refreshed afterwards.

3

Don't forget the fridge/freezer and pantry. The most ideal time to do clean out the fridge and pantry is just before you do your food shopping. Take everything out, toss our any items passed their use-by-date and even collect any perishable goods you might not use to donate to charity. Wipe down the inside of the fridge and clean out the crumbs in the pantry.

Catherine Smith. 186609 At school I ... hated maths but ended up having a degree in business and commerce and a career as a bank manager! Go figure ... Favourite holiday spot in Australia? Eden, NSW the most gorgeous bay I've ever visited in Australia. It was so scenic with sapphire blue waters and as a photographer the views and whale watching was simply magic! Which five dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? Robin Williams, comedian as he would of had me in hysterics, George Calombaris, chef for food tips, Channing Tatum- Magic Mike sim-

ply for entertainment, Mark Zukergerg- just because and Anne Geddes for newborn photography tips and networking. What do you love about photography? Life's too short, so if I can capture that moment in that time that will make that memory last, then I've achieved my goal. I simply enjoy what I do and I love the creativity that you can achieve with photography. Best concert you have been to? Jimmy Barnes, I love Aussie rock artists and his voice is definitely one of a kind. That night was even more memorable as I shared it with amazing friends, we drunk, we sang and we laughed. Simple joys of life but unforgettable!

12402655-CB44-18

What is something people don't know about you? I've always been passionate about life and I don't want to miss any opportunity. So right now I'm a full time student studying photography, a mother of two, I work at the bank and I operate my own photography business. This wouldn't be a possibility without the love and support from my husband and family, I'm just lucky and determined to succeed in life. What was your most memorable moment? Giving birth to my little ones, I think any mother would agree. It might have not been bliss at the time but it was certainly a memorable moment that I will never forget. What's was best thing about being the event photographer for the VIP fashion show in Berwick last week? The best thing was to collaborate with the local businesses. I felt proud to work alongside amazing people including proud owner Lisa Moore from Little Blackbird who gave me this opportunity. I strongly believe it was a success and the overall message was delivered which was shop local, be local and love local. What is your favourite movie? I'm a sucker for love movies and then the complete opposite, horrors. Strange I know! Unfortunately I love watching movies way too much that I simply don't have one favourite movie to share. If you could photograph anyone in the world dead or alive who would it be and why? Good question, there's so many memorable people I would love to photograph but the top person would have to be Marilyn Monroe. To be the most popular sex symbols of the 1950's era, a famous actress, model and singer. Her story impels me as she lived most her life in foster homes and then strived to become a well-recognised star. I could imagine taking amazing photographs of Marilyn, well it's a dream now.

A talented writer who allegedly fell into an ice habit and homelessness was refused bail at Dandenong Magistrates Court. Brenton Kade Cowell, 30, faced charges included a burglary at the Berwick Waters retirement village in July, where two hot water systems, a sink, two stoves, a shower base, shower set and tap assembly were stolen. Cowell also admitted to selling a Posh Stylus bath tub stolen from an under-construction estate on 'Gumtree' for $150, according to a police summary tendered in court. He was also accused of throwing garden rocks at a man while working on a building site in Endeavour Hills. While being sought by police, Cowell allegedly fled by jumping over neighbours' fences in Berwick on 14 September.

At one stage, he climbed onto a home's roof, removing five tiles and crawling into the roof cavity, police claim. In the process, Cowell put his knee through the lounge-room ceiling. Two female residents fled their home in fear, the police summary stated. Police climbed into the roof to arrest Cowell, who allegedly resisted arrest. He was also charged with possessing methamphetamine at the time, which he had admitted to smoking earlier that morning. Until recently, the trained plumber lived in Berwick and had won a $10,000 essay-writing competition in his teens, the court heard. He was now couch-surfing, and had a problem with meth, his lawyer told the court on 29 October. During his in-person bail application, Cowell said he was working as a handyman when

he could. "I feel like I'm trying to get on with my life, I don't feel like I'm a threat," he said. He said he'd been driving with false number plates due to needing to get to jobs. He "didn't really make anything" out of the alleged burglary, he told the court. "It's a completely drug related thing ... me being around the wrong set. I'm trying to get rid of the drugs and the people." That day, Cowell had been arrested in Dandenong at a car containing methamphetamine - though he denied the 'ice' was his. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Cowell had failed to attend appointments on the intensive CISP bail program, while failing to attend court and re-offending. Cowell was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 14 November.

13yo home invader’s thinning defence By Cam Lucadou-Wells

12387577-CG20-18

A 13-year-old boy has been warned that his defence arguments were wearing thin after stealing a van in Springvale while on bail, a children's court has heard. The boy has had previous charges dismissed at a children's court due to doli incapax. That is, he was not mature enough to understand the difference between right and wrong or the nature of their offending. The boy's defence lawyer told the court that a psychiatrist was assessing the accused for doli incapax. With the boy soon to turn 14, the magistrate said: "You can't keep stretching that. He's nearly at the end of that. "Over time, it just dissipates."

On his arrest on 28 October, he was charged with car theft and unlicensed driving. In opposing bail, a police informant told the hearing that the victim was pleased to get her van back. "It's her means of earning a living and she was very upset when told that the accused could be granted bail." He had been on bail for charges including an aggravated home burglary in Narre Warren South, the children's court heard. The "very scared" residents hid in their bedrooms while the boy and his co-offender broke in about 10.20am on 27 September. The boy was equipped with a 10-centimetre knife and a box cutter, the informant told the court. He presented as a danger to the public if he

was released, according to police. On three other occasions this year, the boy had committed indictable offences on bail, the court was told. In granting bail, the magistrate noted the boy's "exceptional circumstances" including support from several services, his previous doli incapax assessment, his young age and lack of prior convictions. He asked the boy: "What if you get in a car accident (in a stolen car) and have a prang and hurt them? "What are you going to say? I'm sorry? It's too late. "No one deserves to be hurt because of you." The boy was bailed on conditions including a night curfew, an intensive Youth Justice bail program and a ban on driving.

OPINION

12403148-CG44-18

Time to investigate The recent report in the Age clearly demonstrates why the Casey Council should be investigated by the Local Government Minister. It would appear that their conduct amounts to non-compliance with the Casey Council Code of Conduct. Again it seems that they forget that it is ratepayers' money, not theirs and that Casey Council needs to be held to account. The Casey Council should be acting with integrity and non-favour. In other words, propriety and honesty. Arvo Talvik, President, Casey Residents and Ratepayers Association (CRRA)

On 19 October the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about the National Fuel Strike which occurred on Friday, 26 October. Here is how some readers reacted online: Derek Roper: Our government seem to love exporting everything cheap to overseas while we pay exaggerated prices for fuel etc... I hope the strike helps but really its up to them to help us. Belinda Burford: They just put it up earlier this week to cover the shortfall. Troy Ross: No matter what we need it in the end we will pay anything as they know we have to. Ali Uding: It's worth a shot. Power to the people. Boycott the big companies. Ian Earl: How do you think a strike will help. 72 per cent of our oil prices are as a result of world problems like OPEC reducing supply and forcing others to reduce their supply as has recently happened. The high cost of the US dollar and low cost of Aus dollar effects the price. A large proportion of the 32 per cent left goes in taxes. If our government reduced oil taxes where do you think they are going to get the money for other things. They will just increase taxes on other goods or reduce other fees. Rovel Shackleford: No; but a drop in the fuel tax will! Why we still have personal income tax is a mystery to me because we are already taxed to blazes on everything we purchase; oh I know there's a whole tax industry out there that needs a job.

Ole for a Spanish Fiesta By Jessica Anstice Kilberry Valley Primary School celebrated 20 years with a Spanish Fiesta on Sunday, 28 October. Around 800 people joined in on the celebrations. "It was great to see current students and their families, as well as some previous students take the time to visit us due to the 20 years celebration," Kilberry Valley Primary School teacher Kylie Spalding said. "Oskar Proy's performance at the fiesta was a highlight. His talent was amazing and his younger sibling joined in on a song also. He performed in both Spanish and English. "The flash mob that got our community, students and staff doing some Spanish styled dancing was great." The entire school community was involved in the event. Students planned the stalls for the fiesta, organised competitions, had artworks on display and made mini piñatas. "The event was also to highlight Spanish as our additional language in which our students are learning via our amazing Spanish teacher Mrs Gonzales," Ms Spalding said.

Shed's car show shines By Jessica Anstice The Akoonah Men's Shed Car Show in Berwick attracted a huge crowd on Sunday, 28 October. The day provided family fun for everyone. "It was a great day even though there were multiple car shows around and the Moto GP was on at Phillip island," Akoonah Park Men's Shed member Nick Bolis said. "There was a large contingency of Harley Davison bikes on show. Many of them came in in convoy from Dandenong. There were some great cars and bikes on show. "There were military vehicles; a great turn out of Chevy Corvettes, about 15 and also on show was a shiny black early model Ford Thunderbird that belonged to Johnny O'Keefe. "People loved the food that the Akoonah Park Men's Shed provided. We had many comments that we provided quality food at very low prices." There were three raffles, all provided by generous sponsors. "The live music gave the whole event a carnival atmosphere. We had no complaints," Mr Bolis said. Money raised will go towards the Akoonah Park Men's Shed, men's health, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

With the company matching every donation dollar-for-dollar during August and September, Casey customers have helped to raise more than $1,061,000 in the state for the CWA

The door is open at SJD By Narelle Coulter SJD Homes is the Casey Cardinia Business of the Year. SJD director Simon Dunstan accepted the award on behalf of his team at a gala dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday 26 October. In his acceptance speech Mr Dunstan said the doors of his Officer business were open to other business owners in the area wanting to collaborate and share what they had learnt through the awards process. Mr Dunstan said he started SJD Homes 10 years ago searching for a better work life balance. “I was working seven days a week and I wanted to spend more time with my children. The kids are now part of the company which has become like an extended family,“ Mr Dunstan said. “We put people first and that has come back to us in spades.“ Mr Dunstan said SJD had grown significantly in recent years and 85 per cent of the revenue generated by the company was spent in the local area. “We are proud to live and work in the area.“ He said SJD liked to give back on “many different levels“ and was building two houses for the homeless, the first in Ashwood and the second in the Casey Cardinia Region. “This is a really big deal for us. There are so many brilliant businesses out there, we didn’t think we’d win. “I open my door to anyone in the room so see what we do. We can benefit each other and grow the region.“ Host for the evening, Channel 9 weather presenter Lavinia Nixon, said the judges had a difficult time deciding on the Business of the Year with three firms in the running for the top accolade - SJD Homes, Waverley Industries

Frank Cresia and the team from Waverley Industries read all about the winners in a special Star News publication handed out on the night. 186596

and Davey Marine. This year’s awards attracted 84 applicants across 10 categories. During the evening Ms Nixon spoke to 2017 Business of the Year winner Greg Plant, director of Powerplant Project Services. Mr Plant spoke of the boost winning the award gave his business, which had 50 employees this time last year but has now grown to employ 85. After winning the award last year, Mr Plant drove to Big W, filled his car with balloons and “floated into work“.

“We have defined and redefined what success means to us. We have put in place strategic initiatives, accessed new markets and are thinking about what is next and how to plan for it.“ He said Powerplant’s success was based on its values of people, performance and pride. He encouraged other business owners to follow their dreams. “If you’ve got an idea, back yourself and work hard. You can do anything.“

“We thought we had a pretty good business, but it was really satisfying to know that someone else thought the same thing,“ Mr Plant said. “Staff really appreciated the recognition. Winning the award took the business up a step. It gave us a new view of what was possible. “(Since then) we have really developed at all levels of the business.“ Mr Plant said Powerplant had recently launched a graduate program to employ local engineering graduates.

Local artists tell the story Narre Warren Mechanics Institute Hall was set up with the 31 paintings and accompanying description/history boards for visitors to admire for the Armistice 100 Year Art Exhibition over the weekend, Saturday, 27 October and Sunday, 28 October. The dignitaries invited guests and artists numbered approximately 90. The exhibition was to acknowledge the commitment, courage and sacrifice of our WW1 services. "We aimed to highlight the importance to the public and to assist to educate our next generation," Provenance Artists vice president Judy Owen said. "The event was only the first part of this outstanding exhibition to educate the public about the horrors, heroinism's and deeds of the Australian and other personnel between 1914 and 1918 and to honour their commitment. "Provenance Artist were thrilled and extremely proud to receive a substantial Govern-

ment grant to fund the Holt Armistice, 100year Anniversary Art Exhibition, which was encouraged and supported by Federal Member for Holt, Mr. Anthony Byrne." Ms Owen said they were also extremely pleased to have the support and guidance of the president Mr. John Wells Order of Australia of the Dandenong/Cranbourne RSL through this task. "His only request was that the artists show emotion in their work, and on viewing the pieces of art this is evident," she said. "To have 22 local and Australian artists to be chosen with such an important opportunity to honour those that gave their all for Australia." This exhibition will be travelling around the City of Casey. The next showing will be at Casey Central from 5 to11, November. Provenance Artists are in discussion with Cranbourne RSL and Berwick RSL. Dates will be confirmed shortly. Some of the artwork will be hung in local schools and libraries.

There’s so much more to demographer and analyst Bernard Salt than a quip about $22 smashed avocado on toast... (Google that!) Bernard Salt, a former partner at KPMG, is one of the most well-known writers, media personalities and business advisors in Australia. In business, Bernard’s specialties lie in tracking and understanding Australian demographics and the rest of the world. He focuses on the evolution of consumer cultures, how the most recent generation will fit into today’s business world and how companies can get the most out of their customer base and employees. Bernard writes two weekly columns for the Australian newspaper that deal with social, generational and demographic trends. He routinely appears as a commentator on a variety of business/current affair TV shows in Australia Bernard’s unique skill is to take the latest data and the transfer this into a highly entertaining, informative and relevant presentation on what the future environment will be for both businesses and individuals. Students present passion By Jessica Anstice St Margaret's School in Berwick hosted the final exhibition of student historical 'passion projects' as the culmination to their participation in the History Enrichment Project (HEP) held at federation University Berwick Campus in August 2018. HEP is an initiative of the History Teachers' Association of Victoria (HTAV) in partnership with Federation University Australia. "Highlights of the event included awards and presentations but focused on the exhibition of student research in their own self-directed research projects to staff, parents, students, teachers and guests from local Berwick primary and secondary schools," Federation University lecturer David Waldron said. The program is funded under the Strategic Partnership Program by the Department of Education and Training. HEP provides a resource for teachers and parents who seek enriched learning opportunities for students who demonstrate sound ability and passion in their history studies. The program is aimed at students who are significantly different in their thinking from most other students their age and brings fast and advanced learners together in small groups who share a passion for history.

Heritage College offers Christian education from Early Learning through to Year 12. Situated in Narre Warren South and Officer, both campuses are set on metropolitan and semi-rural properties. The College’s mission is to provide quality Christian education that develops the mind, body and spirit, with the goal of seeing each student become a vital and compassionate member of the community.

In partnership with dedicated staff, Heritage College is committed to making a positive impact on the lives of all who are associated with the College; every student, every family, the local community and beyond.

12404238-CG45-18

The shared College values of respect, resilience, service and excellence shape learning and curricular activities. These values are demonstrated through classroom practice, displays and service-based activities in the community. A focus on service is reinforced from early years right through to Year 12, with opportunities to serve in the local community. A growing alumni demonstrates the College’s commitment to achievement and success as evidenced in the chosen careers of graduating students.

CHAIRO CHRISTIAN SCHOOL PRINCIPAL – PETER WELLS Pete Wells is excited about the innovation and development that he experiences each day at Chairo’s Pakenham Campus, but is equally committed to honouring the school’s longstanding mission: to provide excellence in Christ-centred education, in partnership with families, within a caring Christian community. He explained: ‘We provide Kinder to Year 12 education within a genuinely Christian school culture. Our values, curriculum and programs are all delivered from a Christian worldview perspective. It’s our desire to see boys and girls experience care and challenge that helps them develop into young men and women of great character, who are able to positively impact the world around them. ‘We hope and pray that each Chairo student feels safe and welcomed, as they participate in a strong, healthy, friendly and uplifting community that values the unique capabilities and character of every child.’ Pete holds a degree in Psychology and a Master of Educational Leadership. Prior to becoming Principal this year, he taught for many years at Chairo before taking on the role of Head of School in an International Baccalaureate school in Indonesia. Outside of his work in education, Pete is an award-winning novelist and father of three active boys. With modern facilities in a pleasant rural environment, an excellent school culture, and a host of co-curricular activities, Chairo provides a dynamic and rigorous learning environment. A community event was held in honour of National Children's Week at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick on Thursday, 25 October. The event aimed to celebrate the children of Casey while supporting local families. Playgroups and kindergartens enjoyed a day of family friendly activities. More than 1500 children and families enjoyed activities throughout the day, while learning about several local family support organisations available in Casey. With perfect weather conditions and the ideal venue, the day was a huge success with a wonderful response from the community. A highlight of this year's event was the Ninja Warrior course, where children's excitement was clearly visible as they took on challenges such as climbing, rolling and crawling through obstacles.

There’ll be plenty of racing action at Cranbourne on Melbourne Cup day. 147294

Racegoers will be able to experience all of the action from the best vantage points.

Cup day returns to Cranny By Russell Bennett What better way for south east locals to celebrate 'the race that stops the nation' than at the Cranbourne Racecourse, right in the heart of the City of Casey? Next Tuesday, Cranbourne will hold its second Melbourne Cup day event - after the success of last year's. "It's a big, big day for us," Cranbourne Turf Club CEO Nail Bainbridge said. "We're delighted this year that it's a full TAB meeting with full TAB status so it's shown live around Australia on SKY Channel and covered by the TAB. "It's an early start - our first race is at 11.30(am) and the first at Flemington is at 10.50, so the gates will open at 10.30.

"There's something for everyone, and it'll be a great day." In addition to the racing action, there'll be live bands and plenty of entertainment on the course's new deck. There'll be a significant focus on families and kids on Cup day this year, with a range of free rides and activities. There'll also be a sanctioned barbecue competition featuring around 40 competitors. "That, in itself, will be a fairly major drawcard as well," Bainbridge said. "There's pretty much something for everyone. "Last year was the first year we were fortunate enough to get the opportunity. "Melbourne Cup day is one of the great

sporting days, and it's certainly the best race day in Australia. "To be afforded the opportunity to run a race meeting on that day is an absolute bonus for us. It's something we tried to secure for a number of years, and to be able to get it last year was a great bonus. "We just think it'll continue to build, and build into a pretty significant event in Casey." And the Melbourne Cup day event is here to stay. "We see it as an important part of our fixture going forward, and a pretty important part of our spring racing carnival," Bainbridge said. "Obviously we've got the two-day TAB Cranbourne Cup carnival and we move into Melbourne Cup day, and then we have Tri-

Codes which is a pretty significant event as well, so we've got three really big days within about six weeks." Patrons at Cranbourne on Tuesday will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with jockeys and trainers from all over the state, all while enjoying the racing action from the mounting yard to the winning post. Racegoers are encouraged to embrace the notion of 'country casual', where they can enjoy backing a winner from the bars and bookmakers on course. There's also plenty of outside, grandstand seating for those looking to watch the races from an undercover vantage point. Parking is free, and there are a range of dining packages available on the day.

WGCA’s plea for help as umpire numbers drop away By Russell Bennett There’s no two ways about it - the West Gippsland Cricket Association is running worryingly short of official umpires. But many in and around the association may not realise just how short. At this stage, there are only 15 umpires on the official panel. To put that into context, there are 12 games across the Premier, District, and Sub-District divisions each week. On the weekend, there were just 11 total registered umpires available. It’s already at the point where the league can no longer guarantee two umpires for each Premier division game. It’s a worrying prospect for first XI games set to decide the eventual make-up of the finals. Respected WGCA umpire and association vice president Mike McKenna spoke to the News on Saturday about the situation currently facing the competition. “There’s a District game today - Cardinia versus Tooradin - where there’s no umpire,” McKenna said of the Round 4 clash between two traditional rivals. “We’ve now said that, based on the limited numbers, we’ll have one umpire stand in each A Grade game - including Premier. “There’s not necessarily going to be two umpires for every Premier game. “When I first joined the association, we had 28, 32 umpires on the books and you’d miss out and sometimes you’d find yourself umpir40 STAR NEWS

ing a B Grade game.” McKenna puts the situation down to one key factor - LOVE. That is - Lack Of Volunteer Effort. “There are a lot of clubs who have a lot of senior players who’ve retired and go off and do other things,” McKenna explained. “But this isn’t just an issue for cricket - it’s football, it’s every sport. “Still, for cricket - both junior and senior cricket - it’s exceptionally difficult.” The WGCA is after anyone who loves the game - such as former players - to give something back when they can. “It’s to give something back to the game, or just enjoy some time in the middle,” McKenna said. “You’re the number one spectator and you’re out there for some great play, and you’re right in the thick of it. “I got the chance to see one of the best catches I’ve seen in my life - (Clyde skipper and keeper-batsman) Kiefer Peries down legside. It was an insane catch, and I saw it right there from square leg.” And for those interested, the league is coming to the party to encourage new umpires to get involved. “It’s paying for people to do their online accreditation, and it’s paying their first year membership fees - which is about $140 worth of contribution that we’re offering for anyone who wants to get involved,” McKenna said.

The WGCA is desperately in need of more umpires to join its ranks. 186783 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS

“It’s online, it takes 25 minutes to do, and anyone who’s got any cricket nous could do it. “Then they’d have someone stand with them for the first couple of games they umpire before we leave them to it.” McKenna is a former player who first got involved in umpiring when an umpire asked him an all too familiar question - one that many players or former players would be asked at cricket grounds each week: “Mate, if you think you can do a better job, why don’t you have a go?” For anyone who’s willing to get involved in helping the competition, all they have to do is email Ian Fuller at wgca@umpire.cricketvictoria.com.au. Official umpires are paid for their time.

A great honour for Brown For Neil Brown, a love of greyhound racing came naturally. After all, growing up within walking distance - albeit a long walk - from Sandown Park made attending Thursday night races a perfect pastime. Brown, the current chairman of the Sandown Greyhound Racing Club - among many other roles - has been involved with greyhound racing for 50 years and was recently awarded the Ken Carr Medal at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards. The Ken Carr Medal - named in honour of the late Ken Carr, a legendary Victorian greyhound racing administrator - is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry. Completely humbled by the award, Brown reflected on his journey within the sport. “The awards are not something you even think about or look for. I’ve been involved since I was a teenager and it was 1968 when I started going regularly and I’ve dabbled into everything you possibly could in regards to the greyhounds, so I haven’t left any stone unturned,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed every aspect - from the handson training and a bit of breeding, to involvement in the media through radio and writing also... There hasn’t been too much that I haven’t got involved in and even got into some TV work too.” Brown’s love for greyhound racing began when he as lining up for football finals tickets. “I was about 16 and was waiting overnight at the MCG for football finals tickets and someone said you can have your spot saved in the queue by other people and have a couple of hours off,” he said. “A friend of mine said we should go across to Olympic Park to watch the greyhounds and I sort of fell in love with it from there. “I grew up in Springvale, so it was a natural

progression to go to Sandown Park which was virtually within walking distance of my home. “We used to get in for free through a hole in the fence out the back and now I’m chairman of the club, so it’s been quite a meteoric rise over a long period of time.” It’s fair to say Brown has repaid the club for those free entries back in the day, with his tireless work having helped drive greyhound racing at Sandown - and nationally for that matter - to great heights. Brown’s work on ensuring the proud history of the sport is saved for generations to come has been tremendous. “I really took to the historic side of it and I’ve tried to maintain it and preserve it,” he said. “I was very fascinated by the old-timers I used to meet and got friendly with - many of them had countless stories; just story after story of the different periods of greyhound racing and I had such an involvement and memory of my own, so it came naturally to take on the historic side of it.” Having seen some of the very best dogs that have ever raced, there are two who stand out in Brown’s mind as the best he’s witnessed. “I’ve always maintained, up until probably the last year and a half, that Zoom Top - who raced in the late 1960s to early 1970s - was the best I’d ever seen and her records speak for that,” he said. “I think Fanta Bale, who is our recent champion, is probably close to being her equal - I don’t think there’s much between the two of them.” Having been in the industry for 50 years, is Brown considering slowing down? “I don’t think so. I don’t think my passion for the sport will diminish, so I’ll stay involved in a few things and it keeps your mind active as you get older.” There’s no doubt that greyhound racing is greater for Neil Brown’s involvement and the Ken Carr medal is recognition of half a century of dedicated service to the sport.

By Hayley Wildes

The West Gippsland Cricket Asssociation has announced the initial squad of players from which it hopes a strong fist will be made of its first foray into the top tier of Country Week the Provincial division. Selectors Mark Cooper, Rob Elston and Kyle Brooke have picked an extended squad of players that they’re seeking expressions of interest from in regards to their Country Week availability. Cooper and Elston were both key figures in the WGCA’s famous Country Week performance in February, and will prove pivotal in the makeup of the 2019 version. Next year Country Week will be held from Monday, 18 February to Friday, 22 February. A final selected squad of 14 players will be departing the local area on Sunday the 17th. For the step up into Provincial, they’ll also be wearing a coloured WGCA Warriors kit. At this point they’ll be looking to play two practice games against other competitions or turf cricket clubs, and will also endeavour to have three training sessions on turf prior to Country Week.

Pilon piles on the runs By Russell Bennett DDCA TURF 1 REVIEW - ROUND 2 Berwick has reconfirmed itself as a genuine threat in this Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after an eye-catching win over Springvale South on the Bloods’ home turf. Former state player and Victorian Premier keeper-batsman Nathan Pilon was simply awe-inspiring at the top of the Berwick order after the visitors were sent in to bat. He blasted a whopping 176 not out as he steered his side to 3/251 from their 40 overs, with Jordan Cleland (38) the only other Bears batsman to reach 20. The Bloods fell well short in their reply, dismissed for 177 in the 37th over with star allrounder Steve Spoljaric (a run-a-ball 58) once again top-scoring for the side. Brendan Rose, still new to the Bears, has continued to make a profound impact for Berwick - this time snaring 4/24 from his eight overs; while Darren De Souza (2/22), Isaiah Jassal (2/31), and Cory Bevan (2/31) all snared two scalps apiece. Meanwhile, new Buckley Ridges skipper South African first class player - David White once again showcased his class with an unbeaten 85 as his side chased down Heinz Southern Districts’ 6/146 with seven wickets

in hand (3/148). White is yet to be dismissed in Buckley Ridges colours this season, with Saturday’s clinical knock coming off the back of an unbeaten 105 against Dingley in the Twenty20 competition on Wednesday. On Saturday, he and DJ Watson (28) put on a 62-run opening stand to have their side well on the path to victory. Earlier in HSD’s innings Watson also a real impact with ball-in-hand, snaring 2/27 from his eight overs while Susantha Pradeep took an eye-catching 2/2 from five overs. Michael Davies top-scored for HSD with

his 58 from the middle-order. North Dandenong, meanwhile, stunned the reigning premiers in their one-dayer at Ben Kavanagh Reserve in Mordialloc. After being sent in to bat, North Dandy compiled 7/230 from their 40 overs - thanks largely to Akshay Ballal’s second Turf 1 ton in as many huts so far this campaign. Batting at number three, he reached 103 before finally succumbing to Mordialloc star Ian Daniel (1/30). But by then, the damage had already well and truly been done. The home side’s reply never really got out of second gear after

losing a string of early wickets. At one stage they were sitting on a precarious 5/53 before ultimately reaching 9/144 from their 40 overs. In the remaining game of an action-packed second round of Turf 1 action, a stellar century from opener Leigh Booth (101) came in a losing effort for Hallam Kalora Park against St Mary’s. After Hallam reached 7/179 from their 40 overs, the visitors made light work of the chase - reaching 3/180 in the 35th over thanks to 92 from skipper Kaushalya Gajasinghe, and an unbeaten 73 from Ruwantha Kellepotha.

Uni prevails over Panthers in Victorian Premier thriller By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes

VICTORIAN PREMIER CRICKET Melbourne University escaped from Shepley Oval in Dandenong with the most thrilling of Victorian Premier Cricket wins on Saturday. Batting first, Melbourne Uni recovered from the loss of the early wickets of Tom Rogers (9) and Yousaf Iqbal (9) at 1/12 and 2/28 respectively to bounce back to 2/108 thanks to an 80-run stand from opener AJ Gregory (44) and Isaiah Borgas (80). With Gregory’s dismissal - run out by Ed Newman - Borgas combined with the rest of the middle order to mount an ultimately telling 6/230 from their 50 overs. Skipper James McNeil (15), Fergus McKenna (24), and Liam Scammell (32 not out) all made invaluable contributions in an innings where - clearly - every run counted. Akshat Buch (2/32) and Peter Sweeney (2/44) were the leading wicket-takers for Dandenong. The Panthers lost star skipper Tom Donnell for just nine early in their reply at 1/16. But when either Donnell or Brett Forsyth falls early, the other invariably takes up the scoring load and that’s exactly what Forsyth did on Saturday. He combined with Newman (28) for a valuable 50-run second wicket stand to get the ship back on course, and then later for a 100-run stand with returning Test paceman James Pattinson (46) for the fourth wicket. Crucially for Pattinson, and the Australian national set-up, he opened the bowling for the Panthers earlier in the day and got through his 10 overs - finishing with 1/42. But in Dandenong’s reply to Melbourne Uni, they lost Forsyth (82), Pattinson, and Sweeney (1) all within the space of three runs to go from

Melbourne University celebrates the prized scalp of Tom Donnell. 186790 being 3/177 at one stage to 6/180. From there it was up to the likes of Cam Forsyth (32 not out), Jacques Augustin (12) and James Wilcock (4) to mount a rescue mission. And the Panthers came agonisingly close finishing their 50 overs on 8/227, just four runs short of victory. John McLaughlan (2/30) and Gregory (2/49) were Melbourne Uni’s only multiple wickettakers from a game that will be remembered as a Premier thriller. By contrast, Casey-South Melbourne was blown out of the water early by a rampant Melbourne at the Albert Ground. Batting first, the home side amassed 2/304 from their 50 overs with Meyrick Buchanan smashing a near run-a-ball 154 from the top of

the order. Keeper-batsman Sam Harper (47), Blake Thomson (60), and skipper Matt Brown (30 not out) also gave the Swans’ bowlers plenty of headaches. In their reply, the visitors were rolled for 189 in 42 overs, with Jared Maxwell top-scoring with 62 and Kieran Elliott (3/36) and Brad Melville (3/39) taking three wickets apiece for Melbourne Uni. Casey-South Melbourne, meanwhile, was no match for Melbourne in their encounter at Albert Ground. Having won the toss and elected to bat, Melbourne got on the front foot immediately as opener Meyrick Buchanan (154 not out) was at his destructive best as he blasted 15 fours and three sixes. Blake Thompson (60) and Sam

Harper (47) also contributed to Casey’ demise as they posted a total of 2/304 in 50 overs. Facing a tough task to chase down a big total, Casey-South Melbourne struggled to establish key partnerships as wickets fell at crucial times throughout their innings. Jared Maxwell (62) top-scored for the Swans in a strong performance, but his teammates continued to fall around him. The Swans lost their final five wickets for a measly 22 runs as the tail failed to make any strong contributions. Kieran Elliott (3/36) and Brad Melville (3/39) helped dismiss Casey-South Melbourne for just 189 runs in 42 overs. MPCA - PROVINCIAL ROUND 4 (DAY ONE) Pearcedale will have their work cut out for them this coming weekend after Mornington took control of their clash on day one. Having won the toss, Mornington elected to bat and opener Matt Foon (43) was superb from the opening ball. Not to be outdone, Ben Clements (105) scored a magnificent century as he combined with Sam Wiese (48) for a dominant 105-run partnership. Pearcedale’s Sam Frawley (2/21) was the pick of the bowlers as Mornington posted an imposing total of 8/276 off 80 overs. Langwarrin posted a strong total against Peninsula OB in the first day of their clash. A 154-run partnership between Matthew Prosser (96), who fell agonisingly short of a century, and Travis Campbell (70) set the innings up beautifully. Sam Prosser (31 not out) worked well with the tail to ensure a commanding total of 9/295 was reached. In other matches, Mt Eliza (8/203) batted first against Flinders, while Baxter (6/318) is in a commanding position against Sorrento.

A tough task at Cranbourne

Their perfect week With all nine teams recording a win this week, Cranbourne Bowls chief John McKenna could not wipe the smile off his face and was almost lost for words in the aftermath of a stunning series of performances. Well, almost. He went on to gloat: "What a fantastic result for the club - I am so proud of our club today, this is a fantastic result from every club member and the club is flying in every way. The teams are winning, everyone is happy and the club is looking forward to infrastructure improvements in the near future, well done everyone." Side 1 Division 2 Playing away and coming off a great win last week, it was another excellent result for Cranbourne - defeating Edithvale by eight shots with three rinks recording wins. Skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield and his team won another close one to give them four wins out of four for the year so far. The form team on the day, winning by nine shots, was skip Frank Byrne and his crew of Graeme Wood, John McKenna and Neil 'Buddy' Drummond. Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Edithvale 76. Cranbourne Ladies Division 1 Playing at home, skip Lynne Wood and her crew of Joy McLisky, Joyce Pearce and Maureen Cameron teamed well to give the ladies a 16shot buffer that enabled a very good 21-shot victory overall. The opposition was starved of opportunities to score due to some very good bowls coming in from the Cranbourne ladies. Cranbourne Ladies 64 (14 points) defeated Montmorency 43. Side 2 Division 3 Skip Chris Griffiths was back in top form, supported by his crew of Vic Buttera, Brian Caddell, and Tony Collins - who won by 12 shots. This was enough to give victory by seven shots in the end against Mulgrave Country Club playing at home on a superbly-prepared grass green. Cranbourne 88 (14 points) defeated Mulgrave CC 81. Side 3 Division 5 Cranbourne secured maximum points against Willow lodge with a margin of 38 shots - very impressive from all four rinks.

It was not a good day for Hampton Park's Midweek Pennant Division 2 bowlers when they travelled to Cranbourne. Playing on their grass green left the Parkers wanting. Richard, Lou, Shane and skip Helen lost 1126; Vince, Jen, Denise and skip Neville lost 1229; and Geoff, Janice, Ellen and skip Christine lost 16-26. Hampton Park 0-53 to Cranbourne 16-81. Playing at Pakenham on their fast top green was a difficult task but the Saturday Pennant, Division 2 Parkers stayed in the race, only going down by 11 shots at the finish. The one winning rink was that of Geoff, William, Chris and skip Steven - 25-21. Matt, Neville, Shane and skip Mark lost 15-18; while Ellen, Christine, Larry and skip Warwick were beaten 18-22. Ken, Helen, Sean and skip John Nunan lost 14-22. Hampton Park 2-72 to Pakenham 16-83. In Division 4, Hampton Park travelled to Edithvale and had an overall win by 12 shots. The big win for the day by 22 shots was that of Vince, John Rogers, Toni and skip Craig 3412. Getting up by five shots was Richard, John Standeven, Ian and skip Ray 21-16; while Lyle, Jen, Marion and skip Denise missed out by one shot - 18-19. Val, Trevor, Ron and skip went down 12-26. Hampton Park 14-85 to Edithvale 4-73. The only home game was against Chelsea with the six-a-side Parkers picking up 12 points. Troy, David and skip Gavin missed by three shots, while Janice, Gary and skip Bill got up by nine shots. Hampton Park 12-41 to Chelsea 2-35.

Cranbourne Midweek Side 2 Open bowler, Scott De Piazza. Skip Hans Worstelling had an armchair ride by his crew of Isobel Partington, Shane Morrison and Peter De Lisle, who all bowled very well with 23 shots up. Cranbourne 92 (18 points) defeated Willow Lodge 54. Side 4 Division 7 Skip Rob Sorensen and his crew of Jess O'Day, Derek Maguire and Frank Coulter won by an impressive 15 shots and the side won by 36 shots up on the day. Cranbourne 97 (18 points) defeated Carrum 61. Side 5 Six a side Skip Allen Skurrie and his team members Stan Williams and Graeme Roberson had a good day, winning by 19 shots which contributed to the 12-shot victory against Churchill Waverley. Cranbourne 42 (12 points) defeated Churchill Waverley 30. Midweek Bowls Midweek bowls results this week were:

Close ones for Berwick The fourth round of Saturday Pennant bowls saw some very close matches with only a few shots separating the winning teams. Berwick sides played five matches at away venues this week with three matches played at home and the eighth side having had a Bye. The number one side from Berwick managed to notch up a win against Pakenham by a narrow four-shot margin, as did its sixth side against Dandenong Club by only three shots. The ninth side in the Berwick brigade won a hard-fought match against Pakenham to notch up creditable three-shot win. Berwick's fourth side continued its winning run with a very convincing win against Moorabbin with an impressive 47-shot margin to boost their overall percentage. The seventh side came home from a trip to Beaumaris after having a had good win with the rink of Paul Hunt again winning well - not quite up to the 40-shot win of last week against Hampton, but still very satisfied with the result nonetheless. Berwick's midweek sides are starting to find their feet and have managed to pick up a couple of wins as the confidence starts to build.
