Sandown Racecourse's future redevelopment is being discussed by the owner and Greater Dandenong Council.

Both have stated there's not yet been a formal application to rezone the famous venue that is home to horse track meets, Supercars racing and a variety of festivals and events.

But plans are believed to have been drawn up for a mix of high-rise apartments, town houses, homes, a medical centre and shops on the site.

The owner Melbourne Racing Club stated it had presented concept plans and technical information for the "future opportunity" but no final decision had been made.

"It is correct to state that MRC have been engaging with Council and other authorities such as VicRoads, Melbourne Water, the Victorian Planning Authority ... regarding a future opportunity for Sandown," MRC spokesperson Laura Golden said.

"This has included providing them with information to allow their comment, feedback and input. "(This) is a normal part of any process leading up to a formal lodgement.

"We will continue current operations for the foreseeable future."

According to council reports, councillors were given an update briefing on the "redevelopment" of Sandown on 3 September.

Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said the MRC was working with council officers to develop a "planning framework".

The MRC had advised that a "detailed com-

munity consultation process" will happen in the near future, Mr Bosman said.

The MRC and the council had been tightlipped on the discussions until MRC member and former Greater Dandenong mayor Peter Brown revealed details of the redevelopment plan.

Mr Brown said the club's committee and the council appeared to be "colluding" to present the racecourse's closure as a "fait accomplit" to MRC members.

The track could be closed as early as 2020 when car racing ends at Sandown, he said.

In September, Mr Brown unsuccessfully ran for a spot on the MRC committee on a platform of retaining the racecourse as its "jewel in the crown".

"It is one of the most majestic race courses in Melbourne," he said - citing its clear sightlines, track quality, fairness for all competitors and its general use by a range of groups.

The course had been bought and built in the 1960s as a buffer in case the club's tenure at Caulfield was not renewed, Mr Brown said.

The MRC recently announced its Caulfield lease was renewed for another 65 years.

Speculation had been rife after Sandown was conspicuously overlooked as the new home of Caulfield's training stables.

On 22 October, the State Government announced the facilities and horse trainers would instead be relocated to further-flung tracks in Cranbourne and Pakenham from mid-2020.

There was no mention of Sandown's future in the $40 million joint initiative of the Government, Racing Victoria and the MRC.

Small army takes on giant

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Small retailers and Greater Dandenong Council are lining up to oppose a multinational Kaufland supermarket proposed in Dandenong.

Kaufland has proposed a 6680-square-metre premises including a supermarket, liquor outlet, food hall and a towering 22-metre sign at the former Bunnings site on the corner of Gladstone Road and Princes Highway.

The German-based retail giant has successfully requested the State Government call in its application to rezone land for six stores across Melbourne, bypassing local council planners.

The application will be heard by a State planning advisory committee from November.

Greater Dandenong councillor Jim Memeti said the council had prepared an opposing submission on "planning grounds".

He said the supermarket would be five to 10 times the size of a Coles or Woolworths store, selling items from "sliced cheese to changing a tyre".

"There's not many things they are not going to sell."

Cr Memeti said it was wrong that Kaufland had avoided the council planning process.

"As long as Kaufland went through the right processes I didn't mind. That's justice.

"I don't think justice has been served this time round where they've gone straight to the Minister."

Business owners in the recently revitalised Hemmings and Menzies street shopping strips fear that Kaufland will destroy their livelihoods.

Several were concerned that Kaufland was proposing a "massive" liquor outlet through the "back door" despite smaller outlets failing to win extensions to their liquor licences.

They had been rejected due to authorities' concerns about the saturation of alcohol outlets in Dandenong.

Terry Tairovski, who has run Menzies Cellars for 20 years, said: "Why do these guys get in through the back door?"

"They're in our patch. I'd prefer they went through the local council who are elected to represent the community.

"Why should the big boys get special treatment?"

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said he'd set up an advisory committee process on Kaufland stores to "ensure we get the best outcomes for local communities and Victoria".

"Members of the public and local retail community are encouraged to participate in the process and share their views."

The advisory committee will make recommendations back to the Planning Minister, who is expected to decide the matter in early 2019.

A 20 business-day public submissions period closed at 5pm on 26 October.

New park’s design is child’s play for kids of all abilities

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Students were invited to a unique 'road-test' to help design Greater Dandenong's upcoming all-abilities playground.

They tried on vision-impairment goggles, blindfold and white canes then took on standard play-equipment at Fotheringham Reserve.

Blindfolded students were vulnerable to any uneven surfaces, poles and swings.

But impressively, after a little trepidation, they still enjoyed scaling tall climbing frames to the very top.

The students from St Mary's, Keysborough, Silverton and St Joseph's primary schools also tried to play while in wheelchairs but found much of the play equipment was a 'no-go zone'.

They were bogged down in tanbark and inclines. They craved seamless, flat surfaces and a wheelchair-accessible Liberty swing.

Consultants and Greater Dandenong Council staff designing the new accessible playground at Ross Reserve, Noble Park soaked in the kids' feedback.

Consultant Lindsay Fraser, of Land Design Partnership, said it was clear that the students, when vision-impaired, felt less safe on moving play equipment.

"Perhaps we have to have different play forms, something that's textural like sand and water.

"Some children want to move a lot more slowly, some a a lot faster - so we have to think about circulation around the playground.

"We have to have a lot of circulation space to allow people to move easily and safely."

Greater Dandenong disability planning officer Chris Stewart said children with a disability still wanted to be challenged in the playground.

"These boys initially said we should put rails on the side of the slide.

"But once they've done it a couple of times, they get used to it."

Mr Stewart said the upcoming playground would allow able-bodied and disabled friends to play together.

"It's the whole aim of good design - so everyone can be included."

Market is rejected

By Cam Lucadou-Wells The controversial Bangholme Market proposed in Greater Dandenong’s Green Wedge has been put to pasture by the State Government.

A State Government planning advisory committee report recommended against the 5000 square-metre sterilisation facility and 8000 square-metre wholesale warehouse.

Planning Minister Richard Wynne has formally endorsed the committee’s advice.

The proposal - on a 37-hectare site at Harwood Road - would result in the “loss of considerable agricultural land from one of the larger properties in the Green Wedge”, the committee stated. “Significantly, the proposed development is contrary to the Green Wedge Policy vision of providing green spacious relief from surrounding urban development.”

It did not meet design and siting guidelines under Greater Dandenong’s own green-wedge management plan, according to the committee.

“The Committee considers that the net community benefit of protecting green spacious relief for present and future generations outweighs any benefit resulting from a wholesale market operating on the subject land.”

The proposal by DandyFresh and developer Intrapac was approved by Greater Dandenong Council in July 2017.

Defenders of the South East Green Wedge lodged an appeal against the decision, which was later called in by Mr Wynne.

Barry Ross, of the defenders group, said the Government sent a “strong message” that it was committed to protecting Green Wedges. “(It) sends a warning shot over the bows of developers and land speculators attempting to exploit Green Wedges.

“Our Green Wedges are meant to be open, rural areas used for agriculture, conservation and recreation, not intensive commercial operations like the proposal Produce Market.”

Mr Ross said he hoped Greater Dandenong Council learnt a lesson in what had been a timeconsuming and expensive fight for the community group.

“It has an excellent Green Wedge Management Plan with strong guidelines that it totally ignored in its decision to approve the Produce Market.”

Intrapac spokesperson Sofia Dedes said the developer had worked hard with the council and “supportive stakeholders” on a proposal that would have created 200 local jobs.

“This project is vital to Melbourne’s south east.

“Intrapac Property have spent millions of dollars to support the growers of the south-east who are currently forced to travel to and from Epping

creating further congestion on our roads and adding costs to consumers.”

Greater Dandenong councillor Matthew Kirwan said the decision was a “vindication” of his dissent against the market.

“This facility was neither a market or rural industry.

“The fact that the applicant wanted to take advantage of cheap land to develop a business that should have been located in a commercial or industrial zone is not our problem.

“In fact (it) is unfair to those industries setting up in the industrial zones of Greater Dandenong, doing the right thing and paying the market price of land.”

Cr Kirwan said if the project was approved, the “push would have been on” to rezone the whole Bangholme East Precinct as industrial land.

Greater Dandenong Council city planning director Jody Bosman declined to comment on the decision and report.

“All applications lodged with Council will continue to be assessed on their individual circumstances and merits.”

Planning Minister Richard Wynne said the Government was "protecting Melbourne's green wedges and setting a permanent growth boundary for our city, all of which would be under threat under Matthew Guy".

A man that police believe can assist in their investigation of a Springvale home burglary on 16 October.

Daylight burglar at large A burglar who broke into a Springvale home on an early afternoon is being sought by police.

The man entered the Virginia Street house about 1.15pm on Tuesday 16 October, Greater Dandenong CIU detectives believe.

He stole a TV, sound bar and two laptops from the premises.

The man is described as southern European in appearance and aged between 35-45 with shoulder-length hair.

He was wearing jeans, blue-grey runners, gloves and a dark shirt with white sleeves.

He was carrying a red and black bag with yellow logo.

Police have released images of a man who they believe can assist their investigation.

Pedestrian killed in Dandenong South A fatal collision has claimed the life of a pedestrian in Dandenong South on Sunday 21 October.

It is believed the pedestrian was struck by a Toyota Corolla sedan travelling west on Dandenong Bypass, near Hammond Road about 5.30am.

The pedestrian, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

The driver, a man in his forties, is assisting police with their enquiries.

Police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the pedestrian on the freeway prior to the crash, or anyone who may have dash cam footage.

More than 120 marchers took to the streets of central Dandenong to protest against slavery on 20 October.

The Walk for Freedom was supported by global group A21 but it had a local focus, says organiser Liana Rutgrink.

She said new arrivals in Dandenong were the most vulnerable target for workplace exploitation.

They were being forced to work in sweatshops or illegal brothels to work under the minimum wage.

The march started as an idea in Ms Rutgrink's church in Hallam, Melbourne Lights Church.

It quickly gained interest as the group marched in the rain.

"People were asking: 'Can I join?'

"Others were giving us the thumbs-up and tooting their horns on the way past.

"It was a positive response."

Woman robbed by armed intruders A 47-year-old woman has been confronted by five males wielding metal bars during an aggravated burglary of her home.

The males forced their way in through the front door at Meadowbrook Place Keysborough about 2.55am on 19 October.

They confronted the woman and demanded cash from her.

The group ransacked the house, taking the victim's purse.

Singing in harmony

By Tanaka Nyamvura “Our Community, a world in one city” was the theme for Greater Dandenong’s Combined Schools Interfaith Gathering.

Now in its 10th year, more than 500 students, teachers and parents from across the municipality gathered at Springvale Town Hall on Tuesday 23 October.

In a delightful explosion of religious diversity, two representatives from each school gave a brief overview of the different world religions and what they believe.

Held on the closest Tuesday to United Nations Day, the event kicked off with a digeridoo recital by Dave Dryden.

It was followed by songs, dances and films by students on the theme from each of the attending schools.

Some of the religious leaders present were from Aboriginal, Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, Jewish, Sikh, Sathya Sai and Brahma Kumaris religious traditions.

The gathering was hosted by the Greater Dandenong Interfaith Network.

The Greater Dandenong-led campaign against absolute welfare cuts for asylum seekers in the community has spread interstate.

Crs Roz Blades and Matthew Kirwan were part of a council road-trip that met supportive Victorian and NSW councils at a gathering in Albury on 21 October.

"We want a national approach," Cr Blades said at a Greater Dandenong meeting the next day.

"We've got a Victorian approach, and certainly got a Greater Dandenong approach.

"We want to put pressure on MPs to reverse these cruel and inhumane cuts."

There was "a lot of synergy" among NSW councils, including Deputy Lord Mayor Linda Scott from City of Sydney, Cr Blades said.

She proposed Greater Dandenong formally invite NSW councils to join the campaign, ahead of a media launch on 3 December.

The launch would feature films of asylum seekers building successful lives in Australia, Cr Blades said.

Greater Dandenong and 17 other Victorian councils have endorsed a joint statement against the unfolding federal Status Resolution Support Services cuts.

Some of the approximately 2000 asylum seekers living in Greater Dandenong have lost their meagre $35-a-day income under the cuts.

Many more are expected to be impacted, and face possible destitution, by early 2019.

The council has also won backing from the Victorian Greens, which unveiled a policy of $13 million in emergency funding to cover the SRSS cuts.

This has not been matched by the State Government and Liberal-Nationals Coalition.

"In saying this, compared to other jurisdictions, Victoria has the largest amount of dedicated funding to assist humanitarian entrants to settle in our state."

The State Government had funded Refugee and Immigration Legal Centre with $1.8 million over four years to provide legal advice to asylum seekers, including for lodging claims for protection.

Through the Jobs Victoria Employment Network, more than 600 asylum seekers and refugees had been supported into work, she said.

The Government had also funded settlement support for new and emerging communities, Ms Williams said.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Statistics don’t tell the full story about the dangers of a four-ways intersection in Dandenong North, say a group of frustrated residents.

The residents have signed a 200-strong petition calling for a roundabout to be urgently installed at the corner of Loch Road and Cheam Street.

They have been rebuffed by Greater Dandenong Council, which has graded the project as a “low priority”.

Several residents told Star News of serious crashes and many more near misses, drivers failing to stop and give way, speeding cars and turning vehicles routinely cutting the corner.

On Christmas Day 2017, a driver believed to be speeding and texting failed to Give Way as he approached on Loch Road.

He crashed into the side of a family’s car turning from Cheam Street, battering it onto the opposite nature strip.

Luckily, vehicle airbags saved two parents, two children and a newborn baby on board, recalls lead petitioner Lana Formoso.

“For such a severe accident to happen just four doors down from her house in a very quiet suburban area is quite a shock.

“We’ve seen a lot of near misses daily and a lot of actual accidents occur at this intersection.”

Sharon Cornell said her parents were “nearly killed” in another serious crash just a few years ago. Their vehicle was T-boned and totalled by a driver that failed to give way.

Her parents haven’t dared to drive to back to the area since.

“We need something to be done here because too many people go through this intersection and wipe people off.

“They don’t stop at all.”

Residents want a roundabout to stem unsafe drivers at Loch Road and Cheam Street, Dandenong North. 186760 and Charlotte Russon say they have witnessed many accidents, including a motorcyclist being struck by a car cutting the corner.

“Cars go through here like they’re on a race track,” Mr Borsthwick said.

Greater Dandenong Council deemed the project was a “low priority” and “unlikely to proceed for the next few years”.

It had found traffic speeds and volumes were “appropriate” to the area.

There had been no eligible crashes at the intersection in the past five years, the council claimed.

Greater Dandenong acting engineering services director Charles Taveira said crash history was one of several “measurable” factors used to assess risk.

“No additional weighting is provided to sites which receive more feedback than others.

“Nor is anecdotal evidence of poor driver behaviour taken into account as driver behaviour can be open to interpretation.”

Mr Taveira said there may be a delay of up to 12 months for the crash on 25 December 2017 to appear on the database.

“If no one required any medical attention it would also not be recorded in the system

as the database only captures those crashes which result in one or more people being injured.”

Ms Formoso said neighbours “beg to differ” with the council’s data.

They were “dumbfounded” that the intersection was one of the few without a traffic island or roundabout, she said.

“We’ve had Council road traffic people come out and do measurements on several occasions.

“They always say the same thing ... there’s the right amount of traffic in the area, the speed’s fine for the area but we beg to differ.”

Wake up call A man has been awoken by an intruder attempting to break into his Springvale house in the early daylight hours on Saturday, 20 October.

Upon hearing noises outside, the 29-yearold victim has spoken with the male intruder in the yard.

The unknown person then fled by jumping over the back fence.

Police later found damage to the back flyscreen door but no entry was gained.

Tools for the job were left behind by the would-be burglar.

The Heatherton Road premises were located between View and Springvale roads.

All inclusive views Greater Dandenong has moved to implement a national "best practice" model on recognising its LGBTI community.

The council plans to host community consultations to learn about community views, refer to services support on its website and implement an inclusion audit of its own workplace.

Cr Matthew Kirwan said the consultation would capture the views of the LGBTI and broader Greater Dandenong community.

"This is no different to the approach we take towards senior citizens, people with a disability, our indigenous community or people seeking asylum."

He noted one in 10 Australians identified as LGBTI, and were facing significant discrimination, violence and unacceptance.

They faced higher rates of depression and suicide - which could be countered by greater inclusion and recognition, Cr Kirwan said.

"This council has been consistent and courageous in fighting racial discrimination because we are a caring council - this is just a different form of discrimination."

In opposition, Cr Tim Dark labelled the report a "Trojan Horse", a "ramming rod" for "radical social change" that didn't represent Greater Dandenong ratepayers.

The "ludicrous" 'safe workplace' audit at Greater Dandenong was a program to stop "people's feelings ... being hurt".

Cr Sean O'Reilly agreed with the recommendations on the proviso that the council did not "go down rabbit holes".

Dandenong's manufacturing sector is set to benefit from a $3 million-plus State Government boost.

The grants will support local projects and an expected 150 extra jobs in the region.

Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams announced the funding at Eurofins Melbourne Campus - Asia-Pacific Scientific Centre of Excellence in Dandenong South.

Eurofins was awarded $1 million of Local Industry Fund for Transition (LIFT) funding for a new food-testing laboratory, which will lead to an expected 50 new jobs.

Other LIFT beneficiaries include Aquaworks and Aware Environmental.

The LIFT program was designed to assist regions impacted by the automotive industry shutdown.

Under a Future Industries Manufacturing Program (FIMP), three local businesses Dynamic Steel Frame, Moondarra Cheese and AW Bell received grants.

The FIMP grants aim to support new manufacturing technologies, better productivity and export opportunities.

Victorian manufacturing is said to contribute $27.7 billion to the state's economy, employing more than 280,000 workers and exporting more than $18 billion of goods.

The Government has contributed $130 million to support the sector.

"I don't mind these exploratory studies as long as they are limited."

Cr O'Reilly said his feeling was that the LGBTI community wanted equal, not special treatment - especially with council services.

He suggested Council's Young Leaders group could create an awareness campaign along the lines of the past campaign 'Racism.

100 years ago 31 October 1918 About People Driver Harold Brunt, an original ANZAC of the 8th Battalion, has arrived back at Springvale on furlough. Sgts Dunston and Orgill both of Dandenong are amongst the original ANZACS who are to be returned to their native land.

The news has been received that another local volunteer had made the supreme sacrifice on the battle field, in the person of Private Robert H Gardiner, who was killed on October 5th. He enlisted with Ray Summers (killed) about 12 months ago, and was wounded in the back during August. He was a member of the local branch of the I.O.R. and prior to enlisting was engaged by Messrs Gunn & Co Auctioneers. Among the local recruits enlisted at the Dandenong recruiting depot were Walter Trounson and Lindsay Griffiths, and

50 years ago 29 October 1968 A Testing Corrobboree Seven groups of Cubs and Scouts from Dandenong North and District attended a fun filled "corroboree" at the Police Paddocks recently. Each group manned an action station and took part in tests. When the boys completed the test their cards were stamped and they moved onto the next station. Activities which they took part included handcrafts, mapping, tracking, plaster cast, first aid, cooking, art, athletics, obstacle, house orderly, confidence and knotting.

Greater Dandenong’s newest shared walking and cycling path is the Djerring Trail.

The name Djerring is from the Bunurong Aboriginal language, meaning to ‘unite’ and ‘connect’.

It won 60 per cent of support among 1800 voters ahead of other nominated names Eucalyptus, Kerrboo onool and Urban Parkland Trail.

Djerring was suggested by the Bunurong Land Council Aboriginal Corporation.

Its chief executive Dan Turnbull said the term was apt since the trail connects people to a new12-kilometre off-road route between Dandenong and Caulfield.

It was also a ‘uniting’ term that “looks to the future, not the past”.

“We’ve spent a long time unpacking the past. We take every opportunity we can to look to the future and to work together.”

Meanwhile, Bunurong language has become a feature of many Victorian school curricula.

“We’re shocked by the number of kids that know more about the language than we do.

Traditional Bunurong lands encompass Western Port Bay across to Leongatha and Wonthaggi in Gippsland and north to Frankston and Cranbourne in Melbourne’s south east.

Laughing arsonist jailed

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A man has set alight a Dandenong boarding house, laughing and taunting occupants as he clutched the residential fire extinguisher, a court has heard.

After a loud noise in the foyer, co-residents found Andrew Warren standing next to the 1.5-metre high and 2-metre wide fire about 12.45 on 16 September.

Warren didn't use the extinguisher in his hands. Instead he laughed and said: "What are you going to do about it?"

Whilst others called triple 0 and tried to quell the flames, Warren fled.

Police told the court that there was a gas container, a yellow liquid believed to be fuel and packaging for a Bear Grylls machete found in Warren's quarters.

When arrested in Dandenong that day, an apparently drug-affected Warren was carrying a police officer's stamp believed to be stolen from a police station.

Police deemed him unfit for an interview.

In the days leading up to the arson, Warren pulled out a machete from his pants and threatened a victim during an argument near Dandenong train station.

"If you don't leave my girlfriend alone, I'll stab you," he said.

He was also charged with excessive speeding, dangerous driving and unlicensed driving after speeding at 130 km/h in a 60 km/h zone in a stolen car.

A machete and a small amount of cannabis were found in the vehicle, which Warren initially claimed he bought from an unknown seller at St Kilda beach.

Warren appeared for sentencing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 22 October.

According to a 2016 psychiatric report tendered at court, Warren's drug abuse was a major factor in his ongoing mental illness.

He had tried to admit himself to Dandenong mental health services on 9 September,

days before the arson, defence lawyer Arend Slink said.

Warren hadn't slept for five days before the incident.

"He just wasn't in the right frame of mind," Mr Slink said.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen said lighting a fire in any environment was extremely dangerous.

"Any fire is small when it first starts."

He noted Warren had attended emergency departments in the lead-up to the offending.

Warren had claimed that he wanted to be arrested out of desperation, so he could get treated at hospital or jail, Mr Vandersteen noted.

"You acknowledge that you had a problem and you were not coping.

"It affects you but broadly it puts other people at risk."

Warren was sentenced to 40 days' jail, already served in remand.

He will also serve a 15-month supervised community corrections order with drug and mental health treatment.

As part of the CCO, he was banned from returning to the boarding house.

He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

Rob makes a haggis that’s fit for royalty

Mr Boyle called 3AW's Rumour File, one of Melbourne's most popular radio segments, to say Prince Harry and Meghan sat down to his haggis at Government House.

"My source confirmed it but it didn't come from an official source, just somebody in the business," he said.

After working as a butcher for 27 years in Dandenong, Mr Boyle says this one topped the honour board.

"It makes you feel proud that people respect the product enough to use me and trust me - it makes it all worthwhile."

It's not every day you get to serve royalty but Rob Boyle, of Rob's British Butchery may have done just that. The flamboyant Dandenong foodie believes his haggis - a popular English savoury pudding containing sheep's heart, liver, lungs with toasted oatmeal, and spices - was served up to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Government House.

But Mr Boyle can't be "100 per cent sure" if his haggis actually reached the plates of Prince Harry and Meghan during the luncheon on Wednesday 19 October.

"We got a phone call a couple of days ago,"

Mr Boyle said. "They said 'Can you get me 80 kilo of haggis?' I said 'Who's it for?' They said 'We can't say. We look after all the big functions in the city'."

"I said "It's not for Harry and Meghan is it?

And he said 'As I say I can't say.'"

However, Mr Boyle said an inside source told him his haggis had been used at a function at Government House.

Mr Boyle conceded the 80kg of haggis was "the biggest one I've ever done in one hit" which could could feed up to 600 people.

He said haggis was usually served as an entree "with a little bit of neeps and tatties which is your mashed potato and mashed turnips."

Lost for words after win

By Mick Floyd Pearcedale local Brad Greenough was lost for words after his exciting chaser Often Imitated booked her place in the heats of the TAB Melbourne Cup following her Prelude victory at Sandown Park on Thursday night.

The night before her second birthday, Often Imitated was backed into favouritism late and despite only stepping fairly at box rise, railed brilliantly to record her seventh career victory in 29.40 seconds - the fastest of the Prelude wins.

Greenough, a third-generation trainer and grandson of leading conditioners Kel and Jackie Greenough, took out his trainers license just six months ago and registered a win with his first starter. Less than six months later, the 20-year-old will put the polish on his first TAB Melbourne Cup heat runner. The gravity of the achievement hadn’t fully struck immediately following Often Imitated’s win.

“The Melbourne Cup heats - it sounds funny to say that really doesn’t it?” he said.

“It’s an overwhelming feeling of achievement. I know it’s only a heat, but it’s a Melbourne Cup heat. It’s something I never though could happen so early in my career.”

Often Imitated has developed an affinity for Sandown Park - six of her wins have come at the circuit - and encouragingly, Greenough believes that there is still improvement to come from his Cup prospect.

“When we had her early days we brought her here a lot and that really got her used to this track, and obviously you want your dog’s running well at Sandown so it helps.

“She looked like she came out ok but it’s not the best she can get out. On a nice warm night I think she could get down to 29.3 hopefully. If she can do that, you can win big races. It’s just a matter of her early race; if she can come out early, she’s usually a chance.”

In other action on Thursday night at Sandown Park, star New South Wales sprinter Miss Splendamiro also booked her ticket to the TAB Melbourne Cup heats after winning her Prelude by three-and-a-half lengths in 29.46 seconds. It was her first start for new trainer David Geall after being transferred to his Lara kennel for a tilt at the Melbourne Cup. A well supported favourite, Miss Splendamiro was forced to work her way around the field after drawing Box 8 and did so impressively.

“She was sent down to us in really good condition; very fit, very muscly. I know how good she was because I’ve raced against her a fair bit,” said Geall.

“We expected her to go well; she had to because she is really, really fast. It is a relief that she’s gone well I can tell you.”

Geall will have a three-pronged attack on the world’s greatest greyhound race with Up Hill Jill and My Redeemer set to join Miss Splendamiro in the TAB Melbourne Cup heats on Friday 16 November.

Other greyhounds to book their place on heats night were Vens Revenge (29.60), Dyna Oscar (29.51) and She’s Gifted (29.48).

Earlier in the night, Black Opium maintained her unbeaten start to her career with another impressive victory.

The daughter of TAB Melbourne Cup winner Black Magic Opal showed brilliant acceleration to charge through the first turn and race away from her rivals to score a win by threeand-three-quarter lengths in 29.46. It was her fifth win in as many starts with an average winning margin of eight lengths.

Unsurprisingly, trainer Seona Thompson is excited for what lays ahead.

“She’s something pretty special,” she said afterwards.

“She’s just a baby. This is all fun for her, she has absolutely no idea what’s going on, she just turns up at the track and she’s just got a heap of ability that’s getting her there at the moment.”

Black Opium made her debut in a heat of the Vic Breeders series at Bendigo in September and has already amassed over $26,000 in prize money. That she has made such an impact on the track despite being just 19 months of age has come as no surprise to Thompson.

“We trained her Mum (Captivating) and Dad (Black Magic Opal) so we thought there could be something special in the litter. She broke in very well, pre-trained very well - she has shown everything from day one,“ Thompson said.

“She’s pretty easy to train; she just does her own thing. We gave her a few trials before her first start at Bendigo and she showed plenty in them. We actually fluked getting in to the Bendigo series - she turned 18 months on the day of the heats so she only just made it in, I guess it was just meant to be. It’s exciting to have another good one for (owners) Bill and Serge Buccilli.”

Indeed, in 2006 Run’s House (trained by Seona’s husband Jason) also went through the Bendigo Vic Breeders maiden series before qualifying for the TAB Melbourne Cup and lining up in the final of the world’s greatest greyhound race at just 20 months of age and at career start number eight.

To qualify, Black Opium would need to contest the final TAB Melbourne Cup Prelude series on Thursday 8 November, and if she was to make the final, would also be lining up for her eighth career start at 20 months of age.

“Obviously we’ll see how she how she pulls up after tonight,“ Thompson said.

“It’s a pretty big effort for a baby, but I’m not going to say she’s not going to be here in a few weeks.”

Celebrating 50 years of aths

By Hayley Wildes The Springvale Little Athletics has long been a staple of the local Springvale community.

It is a hub for families to come together and enjoy summer evenings competing with each other, supporting one another and volunteering.

This season - which kicked off in October sees the Springvale Little Athletics Centre celebrate its 50th anniversary. It all began when the local APEX group called a meeting at the Springvale Council looking for interested participants, and before long, the club was formed on 24 September, 1968.

Originally, the Springvale Little Athletics Centre was established with four clubs; St. Joseph’s Little Athletics Club, St. Antony’s Little Athletics Club, Noble Park Little Athletics Club and Springvale South Little Athletics Club.

The first ever day of competition was held at Ross Reserve, Noble Park in November 1968.

And 50 years later, the club still proudly calls Ross Reserve home.

Little athletics is great for children aged from five to 15-years-old and provides a great opportunity for children to gain, develop and improve an array of motor skills, whilst making new friends and being active.

The Springvale Little Athletics Club runs weekly competitions on Fridays from 5.30pm at Ross Reserve. On a Monday night, from 4.30pm, fundamental technique training is available, also at Ross Reserve. For kids aged from five to 15, the Springvale Little Athletics Club provides an outlet for youngsters to be active and do their personal best.

With about 150 registered athletes, Springvale Little Athletics is a family-friendly club that always welcomes new members and families.

Uni prevails over Panthers in a thriller

By Russell Bennett Melbourne University escaped from Shepley Oval in Dandenong with the most thrilling of Victorian Premier Cricket wins on Saturday.

Batting first, Melbourne Uni recovered from the loss of the early wickets of Tom Rogers (9) and Yousaf Iqbal (9) at 1/12 and 2/28 respectively to bounce back to 2/108 thanks to an 80-run stand from opener AJ Gregory (44) and Isaiah Borgas (80).

With Gregory’s dismissal - run out by Ed Newman - Borgas combined with the rest of the middle order to mount an ultimately telling 6/230 from their 50 overs.

Skipper James McNeil (15), Fergus McKenna (24), and Liam Scammell (32 not out) all made invaluable contributions in an innings where - clearly - every run counted. Akshat Buch (2/32) and Peter Sweeney (2/44) were the leading wicket-takers for Dandenong.

The Panthers lost star skipper Tom Don-

nell for just nine early in their reply at 1/16.

But when either Donnell or Brett Forsyth falls early, the other invariably takes up the scoring load and that’s exactly what Forsyth did on Saturday.

He combined with Newman (28) for a valuable 50-run second wicket stand to get the ship back on course, and then later for a 100-run stand with returning Test paceman James Pattinson (46) for the fourth wicket.

Crucially for Pattinson, and the Australian national set-up, he opened the bowling for the Panthers earlier in the day and got through his 10 overs - finishing with 1/42.

But in Dandenong’s reply to Melbourne Uni, they lost Forsyth (82), Pattinson, and Sweeney (1) all within the space of three runs to go from being 3/177 at one stage to 6/180. From there it was up to the likes of Cam Forsyth (32 not out), Jacques Augustin (12) and James Wilcock (4) to mount a rescue mission.

In their reply, the visitors were rolled for 189 in 42 overs, with Jared Maxwell top-scoring with 62 and Kieran Elliott (3/36) and Brad Melville (3/39) taking three wickets apiece for Melbourne.

Berwick has reconfirmed itself as a genuine threat in this Dandenong District Cricket Association Turf 1 season after an eye-catching win over Springvale South on the Bloods’ home turf.

Former state player and Victorian Premier keeper-batsman Nathan Pilon was simply awe-inspiring at the top of the Berwick order after the visitors were sent in to bat.

He blasted a whopping 176 not out as he steered his side to 3/251 from their 40 overs, with Jordan Cleland (38) the only other Bears batsman to reach 20. The Bloods fell well short in their reply, dismissed for 177 in the 37th over with star all-rounder Steve Spoljaric (a run-aball 58) once again top-scoring for the side.

Brendan Rose, still new to the Bears, has continued to make a profound impact for Berwick - this time snaring 4/24 from his eight overs; while Darren De Souza (2/22), Isaiah Jassal (2/31), and Cory Bevan (2/31) all snared two scalps apiece.

Meanwhile, new Buckley Ridges skipper - South African first class player - David White once again showcased his class with an unbeaten 85 as his side chased down Heinz Southern Districts’ 6/146 with seven wickets in hand (3/148). White is yet to be dismissed in Buckley Ridges colours this season, with Saturday’s clinical knock coming off the back of an unbeaten 105 against Dingley in the Twenty20 competition on Wednesday.

On Saturday, he and DJ Watson (28) put on a 62-run opening stand to have their side well on the path to victory. Earlier in HSD’s innings Watson also a real impact with ball-in-hand, snaring 2/27 from his eight overs while Susantha Pradeep took an eye-catching 2/2 from five overs. Michael Davies top-scored for HSD with his 58 from the middle-order.
