Part of Pakenham’s CBD was sectioned off for upwards of 10 hours following a power line schism on the corner of John Street at James Street. Emergency services attended the incident, described as an “explosion” by witnesses, just before 10am on Monday 22 October. “I was in my office upstairs, looking out the window when the power line went off with a bang,” OBrien Real Estate director Rod Capuano said. “After the bang we saw a huge puff of smoke and cables hanging down. It was loud enough that you could hear it through the windows. “The power came on for a moment, dimmed and then it looks like something else let go further up. It looks like the top cables broke and got burnt in half, hanging down below the lower ones. “There were people walking underneath at the time and those lines have 20,000-30,000 volts running through them.” One of those people was Sinuon Ny. “I was under there when it happened, but we are OK,” she said. A CFA spokesperson said three vehicles responded to the incident, which was under control by 9.57am. The scene was handed back to AusNet Services, who were able to restore the power to the 62 affected customers by 8pm that night. “The line had broken mid-span which made it difficult to repair,” an AusNet spokesperson said. “We had to restrict the aerial bundled cable and re-string that part of the line. “AusNet would like to thank customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Event organiser Liz Markham (nee Downey) has been busy tracking down former students all year. She has been able to locate most of the people pictured, with the exception of Gary McPhee (far right, second front row), Daryl Upton (far left, front row) and Joanne Hill (fourth from the left, front row). She is keen to hear from these former class mates, as well as anyone else who started at Pakenham High School in Form 1 in 1973 or who joined the group in the years up to 1978. “There were 146 of us in Form 3 in 1975, but only 34 three years later when we completed our HSC,” Liz explained. “We were a tight knit group and I thought it would be wonderful to reunite everyone forty years later.” She is particularly excited that two exchange students from the US are making the trip to attend the reunion, Mark La Bonte (centre of the front row) who stayed with the Rossetti and Jeavons families in 1978, and Kim Glaus-Late who stayed with the Ramsdale family while completing Form 5 in 1977. It will be the first return trip to Australia for both Mark and Kim, who have very fond memories of their time in Pakenham. The Class of 78 Reunion will take the form of a relaxed meet and greet over a two course spit roast lunch at the Pakenham Regional Tennis Centre. There will be a few surprises on

A brave woman scared off a potential burglar while home alone at her Henry Street property on Saturday 20 October. The woman told police that she noticed a man on her CCTV camera loitering suspiciously out the front of her house around 11.25pm. The man then entered the property via the side fence and attempted to break in through the window. Aware of the activity, the woman turned on the lights and banged on the window, which scared the would-be burglar away from the window into a waiting car. Nothing was stolen. Plans for a ‘super lot’ By Kyra Gillespie A planning permit has been granted to clear and subdivide a lot on Ahern Road, despite community objections to the development. The land at 82-88 Ahern Road Pakenham has been given the green light by council to be transformed into 28 lots. Just over two hectares in size, the site is currently developed with a single storey brick dwelling located on the north side with a gravel driveway. The surrounding properties are generally single storey. The subdivision includes the provision of 27 lots between 442 and 623 square metres in size, with the 28th lot proposed as a ’super lot’ for future medium density development with an area of 4,728 square metres. The proposal also includes the removal of a number of trees and vegetation scattered throughout the site. Five objections have been received by council to date. Key issues included noise and traffic volumes, the impact of the medium density development on surrounding residents and the existing flora and fauna, and the lack of time for residents to object. One objector claimed that the length of time given was not enough time to sell her property before it is devalued by the super lot. Despite concerns from surrounding residents about an increase in traffic, the report concludes the development ‘will not significantly increase traffic in the immediate and wider site context that cannot be accommodated within the existing and proposed road infrastructure.’ “I know there are a number of objectors sitting here in the gallery tonight, but our traffic reports indicate that there is adequate infrastructure in place right now to handle future

The Mayor made a warning to residents considering taking their objections further. “If this goes to VCAT it could be approved with no conditions, and the developer can do what they like with it. “The best result is for us to put up a whole lot of conditions to make sure it’s done properly.” Taking a subtle shot at the independent tribunal, Cr Schilling described VCAT as “prodevelopment.”

“We would like to see lower densities in our area, but the planning schemes are black and white. “If a proposal fills all the requirements of the planning scheme its difficult as a council to change anything within it. “VCAT tend to be pro-development, so we prefer to avoid going down that path where we can.”

Classic cars on show Classic car enthusiasts of all ages came from all over Melbourne on Sunday to Car Megamart's third annual MEGA Car Show and Family Fun Day. The free event raised funds for the Young Veterans Association and the Rotary Club of Pakenham, who both came along to the event. This year the event saw over 700 classic cars on display, including Chevys, Dodges, Chryslers and Pontiacs. Over 6,500 people visited the Pakenham event to admire the display of cars. The event also featured food trucks, market stalls, kids activities, and a live entertainment from cover band Rehash. A historic Pakenham Upper homestead built by Fitzroy Football Club founder and former Fitzroy mayor John McMahon has been passed up by bidders. The sprawling four hectare property at 15 Huxtable Road, named The Grange, drew a considerable crowd at Saturday's auction - but the reserve price was not met. However, First National Berwick agent Peter Watson anticipates a purchase is on the horizon. "We are negotiating with several parties at the moment," he said. "It is nearing a private sale." Valuators expect the country retreat will be snapped up for approximately $1.9 million. According to Heritage Council documents, the property "has historical significance for its associations with a number of prominent district people". It is considered an important representation of Cardinia Shire's past-era rural residences, gardens and architectural design. The Oak and Elm trees lining the driveway are thought to be as old as those in the Fitzroy Gardens and are classified under the National Trust. The homestead boasts four bedrooms, four bathrooms, a covered outdoor entertainment area, and retained old-style charm throughout. "One of its standout features is its authenticity, its period charm, it still has a lot of original features but also has modern comforts," Mr Watson said. McMahon, a prominent local tailor, chaired the 1883 meeting at the Brunswick Hotel in Fitzroy during which the Fitzroy Football Club was established. The Casey Cares Drought Relief Concert will start at 5pm in the Bunjil Theatre. Using no nets or safety harnesses, By A thread offers rich visuals of inventive aerial acrobatics and spectacular skills from some of Australia's best emerging and established circus artists. Be strict about dressing for the season. There is always one main thing judges will look out for - and that is, wearing seasonappropriate fabrics, millinery and accessories. For spring/summer wear straw, silk, sinamay and any trans-seasonal fabrics.

Majority rules. When entering a fashions on the field competition there is often anywhere from three to five judges. The judges have to make a decision on who will win, which means they must agree on just one person. This is tough for entrants because you want to have your own signature style, but at the same time, if it's a little out there, you may not please the majority of the judges.

Research the judges. If you find a race-enthusiast-turned-judge, you can often tell what their personal style is. Are they more classic, fashion forward or vintage? If you know a judge and what styles they lean towards, you can determine whether to wear a certain style of outfit.

Will you include your GP wave off experience in your Narre Warren show? It's possible. It really just depends how the day goes, and if something funny happens. I'll try! What would you say to mums and dads who are going to turn out with their kids to see you wave off the riders? I will give them my word that I will keep the swearing down to an absolute medium. JK, I'll keep it clean. Can't speak for the GPs though - it's race day, and they've got an Rx for moto madness!

Over 200 guests celebrated Seniors Festival with Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross and fellow Councillors at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Thursday 18 October. Enjoying Devonshire Tea and a lively rock 'n roll show by Honey B and The Stingers, attendees 'got social' as suggested by this year's Victoria Seniors Festival theme. At the event, the Mayor also officially launched the Cardinia Shire Ageing Well Newsletter, developed by Council with the support of the Cardinia Shire Age Friendly Alliance Group. With the support of the Cardinia Age Friendly Alliance Group, Cardinia Shire has just released the first edition of 'Ageing Well' available in print. It includes information on My Aged Care, preparing for fire season, the Age Friendly Alliance Group, connecting you to your community, and the Victorian Seniors Card. "We believe the Ageing Well newsletter will improve social connection and equitable participation for seniors who do not access technology," Cr Ross said. "In recent years there has been a rapid shift toward online communication, via websites and social media, and a decrease in printed information. "Results from the recent Cardinia Age Friendliness Survey indicated that 40 per cent of the respondents still prefer paper-based information. This newsletter aims to reduce the risk of social isolation for older residents in our community, because it is important that these community members are easily able to stay socially connected and informed on current issues. "This new publication demonstrates council's ongoing commitment to create an 'Agefriendly' shire, and aims to support older adults in our community to improve and maintain good social connections and wellbeing through improved access to relevant, up-to-date information." Council will be trialling the new printed newsletter for 12 months. It will be produced quarterly and available for collection at a variety of locations, including libraries, community houses, Cardinia Cultural Centre, Cardinia Life, and Council's Civic Centre. Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. Wet weather wreaks havoc By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 3 On a Saturday marred by wet weather, most games across the West Gippsland Cricket Association were abandoned. PREMIER Only Clyde's clash with Cardinia was completed, with the contest reduced to 35 overs per side. Batting first, Clyde was dismissed for 146 with - once again - a host of batsmen making starts but falling at inopportune times, often due to rash shots. Seven Cougars batsmen reached double figures, but only quick bowler Nick Sadler's invaluable 45-run cameo made any lasting impact, while Travis Wheller (3/16) and Matt Welsh (3/20) were the pick of the Bulls bowlers. Cardinia opener, skipper Alex Nooy, scored a quickfire 39 runs, before falling with his side still on just 3/47. AJ Walker also made a start, before falling to Shane White, but it was Wheller (48) who capped off his strong bowling effort with an elegant knock with the bat and essentially steered his side home. The Bulls (7/150) ultimately won by three wickets in the 32nd over - a result against a fellow finals aspirant that could prove crucial in shaping the eventual make-up of the top four. The Cobras bowlers were simply superb as the Demons top-order faltered and found themselves at 4/20. Merinda Park's Agyapal Sidhu (4/12) and Amreek Mann (4/17) combined to rip through Kooweerup's batting lineup. Kooweerup was dismissed for 89 in 30 overs. Amreek Mann was the match-winner, contributing greatly with the bat and ball. Matches between Lang Lang and Gembrook, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc and Nyora, and Pakenham and Catani were all abandoned. On Saturday morning, just before the weekend's rain-affected round, the WGCA issued a statement on its website - in part saying: "Before any more people start complaining & blaming the Board for not calling this week's matches off due to wet weather, try reading the rules. All the current rules & by-laws are available on the website for everyone to see". The statement went on to read: "The Board can call rounds off, yes, but only after all the clubs have contacted the league & advised of their local conditions before 11am. If clubs fail to do this, then the Board cannot make the call. "The WGCA is one of the largest geographical associations around & weather conditions can be drastically different across the area the association covers, so without the cooperation of the clubs, such decisions are virtually impossible to make".

Where there’s a will, there’s a way By Russell Bennett While the wintry weather returned to wreak havoc on cricket grounds right across the south-east on Saturday, the incredible curators at Shepley Oval in Dandenong worked tirelessly in a bid to allow 48 overs to be bowled - despite play being delayed until just after 3.30pm. The Panthers were hosting Melbourne Uni in their Round 4 Victorian Premier Cricket clash and were sent in under ominous skies after losing the toss. The star opening batting combination of skipper Tom Donnell (25) and Brett Forsyth (12) combined for just 22 in their first wicket stand before Forsyth became the first of Steve Reid’s three victims - caught behind by keeperbatsman Jarrod Martignago. Donnell fell soon after at 2/49, bowled by AJ Gregory, and continued the tone of Panthers batsmen departing just when they’d made a start. No less than five Dandenong batsmen reached double figures throughout the day’s play, but Donnell and Lincoln Edwards (33) were the only two to pass 20. In fact Donnell has departed in the 20s in three of his four hits so far this season - the other being a stellar unbeaten 90 in Round 3 against Northcote. Edwards looked in fine touch on Saturday until he was bowled by Liam Scammell - the first of his two scalps as he finished with the impressive 2/8 from his five overs. It was Reid who was the biggest shining light in the Melbourne Uni attack as he finished with 3/27 from his 14 overs, while Wes Agar (1/29) was the other wicket-taker. Casey-South Melbourne's game against Melbourne at the Albert Ground was abandoned. It’s important to note that the Victorian Premier Cricket firsts, seconds and fourths will play a Rule 18 one-dayer next Saturday, while the thirds will continue their Round 4 twodayer. In what was a remarkable day for football in the region, Tuesday's 2018 AFLW Draft saw two local stars taken with picks five and six, respectively. Dandenong Stingrays captain, Jordyn Allen is now a Magpie after Collingwood swooped on the talented midfielder with its first selection and fifth overall pick. One pick later, Gippsland Power captain and Cora Lynn product, Tyla Hanks was selected by Melbourne with the sixth overall pick. Both 18-year-olds were standouts in the TAC Cup Girls competition and at the national championships, where they played for Victoria Country. Hanks has been on the radar of AFLW clubs for some time and while her ability to play the game is tantalising, her leadership qualities and knowledge of the game is what sets her apart already at such a young age. Allen is also a terrific leader and possesses a great ability to burst away from contested situations and use her sublime skills to find a target when others would struggle. Locals sweep key awards There was a strong local flavour at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards at Melbourne's Crown Casino recently. In a great night for local greyhound followers, Sandown chairman Neil Brown was awarded the Ken Carr Medal for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry, while breeder, owner and trainer Ashlee Terry was awarded the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' Award. The Ken Carr Medal is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry and Brown - a greyhound administrator and historian - has held roles in greyhound racing for almost 50 years. "I'm never lost for words but my family have kept a great secret here," Brown said. "I'll steal a word from the late Ron Nestor who said he got more out of the sport than he ever put in, and I feel the same." Brown has bred and trained greyhounds, been a member on the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel, the original Topgun Panel and still contributes greatly to the GRV's Hall of Fame Committee, as well as having held the position of CEO at Greyhounds Australasia. It was a chance introduction for Brown that started his love for greyhound racing. "I was waiting to buy footy finals tickets outside MCG, and a friend I was with said let's go across to Olympic Park and have a look at the races," he said. "From that moment I was hooked and, living near Sandown Park, I began going there every Thursday night, which I still do today." Terry, a 27-year-old greyhound breeder and trainer from Cranbourne South claimed the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' Award - recognising outstanding achievement in the training, breeding or promotion of greyhound racing. Terry claimed her first Group 1 win as a trainer with Maja Mahi Mahi in the 2017 Sapphire Crown and has had stunning success as

a breeder also. "I'm very honoured and very surprised and a little bit nervous," Terry said. "Andrew [Paraskevas] and I bred the litters together, and it's probably a bit more special when you breed them yourself because you've had them since they were puppies and you watch them grow up and race and be successful. It is probably something everyone in the sport dreams to do." Terry thanked Andrew Paraskevas, along with trainer and rearer, Karen Leek. "I've wanted to be a greyhound trainer since I was five years old and I think we've improved a lot since we've been trainers," she said. "I couldn't imagine doing anything else it's very much a passion of mine."

"It would have been nice to get into the Premier division a few years prior, but things have all worked out really well. The off-season has gone well and we've had good support from a number of sponsors that have jumped on board, and in pretty much every indicator you can have as a club we're going pretty well." But the Panthers, long viewed from the outside as a club that should have been mixing it with the big boys of Premier, aren't content with just making up the numbers in the WGCA's top flight. "We want to go up and ultimately win the Premier division," Floyd said. "Winning District is nice, but it's second division. We've always considered ourselves as a Premier club - one of the leading clubs in the competition off the field - and now we've got the opportunity to do it on the field, and to prove it. For the Devon Meadows Cricket Club and its faithful, the unfurling of the Panthers' 2017/18 WGCA District division premiership flag on Saturday signified more about what's to come than what has just transpired. The Panthers are hell-bent on making their 50th season one to remember. Since last season it had been around 15 years since their last first XI premiership - with a number of disappointing finishes to promising campaigns along the way. And now that they're into the Premier division for the first time since the competition restructure, they're doing everything they can to stay there. "We've probably got a bit more depth this year, which you obviously need for the Premier grade," club president Mick Floyd said at the flag unfurling on Saturday morning. "A lot of clubs have gone up to Premier (from District) and either just held on or gone back down straight away for various reasons, so we were pretty determined for that not to happen with us. "We found before the restructure (from A Grade to Premier, District, Sub-District) that we were that side that would win three, four, or five games so we were never really in relegation danger but were never really a finals contender either. It doesn't improve your cricket if you're not playing in meaningful games for large parts of the season. "It was important in the off-season to add a bit of depth and not have to rely on one or two guys, because if they happen to have a bad day you could be in strife. "We've got a list with depth with bat and ball - we bat right down, with seven or eight bowling options as well. "We're a little on the older side - we're not shying away from that - but there are some good kids coming through as well. "The junior numbers are good - we've got five junior sides in - and we're starting to see some of the benefits now with good young players coming through.
