Man struck by excavator By Brendan Rees

An excavator driver was rushed to hospital following a workplace incident in Cranbourne West on Monday 22 October. It is believed a 24-year-old man from Doveton was operating an excavator on Wanstead Way when it "toppled over" about 12.50pm. Police say a passer-by observed the incident and used his bobcat to lift the excavator freeing the operator. Police and emergency services attended and the man was airlifted to the Alfred hospital. A Victoria Ambulance spokeswoman said the man had non-life threatening injuries including serious injuries to his arm, leg, shoulder and ankle, as well as a minor injury to his head. WorkSafe also attended and are making enquiries.
Petrol hike bites The average household is spending about $250 a month on petrol which is up around $30 in the past six months, a chef economist says. According to CommSec chief economist Craig James motorists should get used to paying $1.50-$1.70 a litre for fuel. Filling up the car with petrol was the "single biggest" weekly purchase for most families which were "bad news for cafes, restaurants and fast food outlets," said a weekly insights note from Mr James issued on 19 October. "A higher petrol price has the potential to trim spending on discretionary or non-essential items. "Overall, conditions in the global oil market suggest that prices are peaking," the note said. Drivers filling up at BP on Hallam Road in Hampton Park on Monday 22 October were slugged $165.9c a litre for unleaded fuel, while
Fuel prices are not set to come down, according to CommSec. the average price in Cranbourne was a $147.9c a litre. The cheapest was $143.9c a litre at Cranbourne South General Store on Pearcedale Road. According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average price of unlead-
ed petrol rose in the past week by 1.8 cents to 157.6 cents a litre - the highest level in more than four and half years. Cranbourne Information and Support Service executive officer Leanne Petrides said they spoke to many people feeling the pinch at the bowser. "We see many people who are coming in for petrol and public transport assistance," she said. "The southern suburbs of Casey, including Cranbourne, Clyde and the coastal villages are geographically disadvantaged, and people are almost forced to be reliant on cars as their primary mode of transport. "People have to travel for health appointments, work, and to get their children to school, and for those on a low income with more than 50 per cent already being used to pay for housing, a hike in petrol prices is always bad news," Ms Petrides added.
FACTORY DIRECT BLINDS FOR LESS
CommSec says the wholesale petrol price was currently around 147 cents a litre with diesel around 153 cents. "A margin of 10-12 cents has to be added to obtain the retail prices. So motorists can currently expect to pay at least $1.57-1.60 a litre for petrol, abstracting from 'discounting cycles'." The weekly insight added the other "piece of the puzzle" for motorists was the Aussie dollar: "If US interest rates continue to rise, this would point to a weaker Aussie dollar and the potential for higher local petrol prices." "The bottom line is that motorists need to watch the petrol cycle closely and use apps to find the cheapest places to fill up," it added. The RACV website listed Melbourne's average unleaded fuel price on Monday 22 October as 158.6c a litre. The lowest recorded price was $137.5c a litre, while the highest was $169.9c a litre.

IN BRIEF
$140k in expenses By Brendan Rees Casey councillors have racked up a whopping $142,692 in training, education, travel, carer and IT bills - which were all claimed as expense entitlements. Former mayor Sam Aziz topped his claim of $30,984 during 2016-'17 with $35,627 last financial year, according to council's latest annual report. This included more than $19,000 on travel, nearly $6,500 on IT and communications, and about $9,000 on training and education. When contacted by Stat News, Cr Aziz conceded "we have nothing to hide." "I don't even know what the expenses are, so it's exactly as they are in the published accounts in the annual report," he said. Cr Aziz defended his travelling claim saying: "We've spent peanuts in relative terms to make tens of millions of benefit for the ratepayers." "If it means councillors travelling over-
seas to China and spending $20,000 in the process and returning millions of dollars in investments then so be it, that's just the way it is." Cr Aziz offered no apologies for his overseas trips, saying "they're not junkets by any stretch of the imagination." "You're putting in 16 hour days ... they're actually business trips and they're hard working trips that deliver results. "I just work within the budget," Cr Aziz said, "And deliver a certain capability and that's exactly what I do. "Trust me if you want to get rich don't become a councillor," he added. The second most expensive councillor was Cr Amanda Stapledon who claimed $20,541 including nearly $11,000 for carers. Mayor Geoff Ablett collected $20,000 while Cr Milla Gilic claimed the least amount with $639 in total on IT. Cr Gilic said she didn't "feel comfortable"
with ratepayers having to foot the bill for councillor expenses. "I just want to make sure that I don't let down the people that voted for me," she said, adding "I don't need to cost anybody any money." "I know there are councillors, when it comes to needing care for family members and things like that, I know that is 100 per cent absolutely genuine." When pressed about whether Cr Aziz's claim was justified, she said "I respect Sam greatly and to be very, very honest he's never done anything but the most professional and helpful and supportive work in council since I've been there." "From the outside it may seem a certain way, I don't know, but honestly he fights really hard for our residents," Cr Milic said. Cr Rex Flannery, who claimed $1,849 on phone and internet bills said: "I don't spend anything deliberately because I don't want to be seen dipping my hands into ratepayers' pockets."

Workers hit gas main Fire crews were called to Thompsons Road in Cranbourne after receiving reports of a broken gas pipe main on Monday 21 October Firefighters from Cranbourne, Hallam and Narre Warren attended the leak about 2.30pm which was about 10-15 metres from the road. Firefighters, who brought the leak under control shortly before 4pm, believed the leak was caused by an excavator hitting a 125-millimetre gas main. A CFA spokesman said the leak was in a reasonably clear location as firefighters used their gas monitoring equipment to ensure there was no threat to the public. Thompsons Road had to be shut down with traffic diverted along Williams Thwaites Boulevard. Gas company workers repaired the gas main by about 7.30pm. CFA issued a safety alert at the time for Clyde North, Cranbourne East, and Cranbourne North due to the gas leak being hazardous. Residents were advised to avoid the area between Narre Warren Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road.
Ram raids in south Police are investigating following two ram raids in the south eastern suburbs last month. It is believed three masked men drove a Nissan Navara through the back of a hardware store on the South Gippsland Highway shortly before 5am on 29 September. The car drove through the store before exiting out the front entrance, however nothing was taken from the premises. Police believe the same vehicle was involved in a ram raid just minutes after at a liquor store on O'Shea Road, Berwick. The vehicle smashed into the store before driving away. Nothing was stolen. The car was later found burnt out on Berwick Springs Promenade, where the males are believed to have fled on foot. No arrests have been made at this stage and the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Clive’s big strides for stroke awareness
Lady with a big heart celebrated By Brendan Rees A child educator described as a "woman with a heart of gold" has been honoured for dedicating half-a-century of teaching and bringing fun to children's lives. It has been 50 years since Judy Clarkson began looking after four children at her family home in Cranbourne - which became the birth of her kindergarten empire. Since then, Cranbourne Day Care and Kindergarten Centre have grown to include six centres catering for some 800 Casey families. Hundreds gathered on Saturday 13 October to celebrate Ms Clarkson's milestone in providing a fun, learning atmosphere for children. Daughter Sharon Smith said it all began from humble beginnings when her mother welcomed four children into her home in 1968 so her sister could have a "playmate" while she and her brother Howard went to Cranbourne North Primary school. She said this number quickly grew to registering 16 children by the end of the same year. "Alongside my dear father Ivan they both became a great team - working long hours together doing everything from cooking the hot meals for those in their care to even hanging out the washed nappies." Sharon said her mother felt it was important to be part of the Cranbourne community, adding their staff had "been a significant part of this amazing journey." By the 1970s, the centres had grown to care for 119 children. "I was at high school during this time and I recall ever so proudly telling my school friends that 'my mother owns the big-

"Not only is she a smart, courageous and an incredible business woman, but also, a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother, friend and dog owner," she said. "Jude was the cook and created the ever popular sausage stew and mince steak that have stood the test of time." Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon described Judy as a "trailblazer." It's been almost three years since Clyde resident Clive Kempson suffered a stroke, which changed his life without warning. Clive was petrified immediately after his stroke, as he had speech problems and no use of his right arm or leg. But after ongoing rehabilitation and thanks to plenty of determination, Clive continues to make progress in his recovery. This November, Clive will Stride4stroke to raise awareness of the disease and raise money for the Stroke Foundation. Clive said he was passionate about giving back to the Stroke Foundation to help improve outcomes and supports for others who have a stroke in the future. "There are not enough people who know about stroke and there are not enough people who talk about it. I'm hoping I can start some important conversations," Clive said. "The beauty of Stride4stroke is you can set your own physical activity goal. My dog and I will aim to walk 60 kilometres throughout November." According to the Stroke Foundation, research shows, one in six people will have a stroke in their lifetime. It can strike at any age, impacting children, teenagers and adults. Stroke attacks the brain - the human control centre. There will be more than 300 strokes in the LaTrobe area in 2018 alone, but it can be treated and it can be beaten. Clive encouraged the Casey community to follow his lead by taking part in Stride4stroke themselves or donating to his efforts. "Most of the people I know have a personal connection to stroke - whether it be a parent, grandparent, friend or colleague,'' he said. "I ask our community, who will you stride for this November?" Stride4stroke is open to all ages and abilities and participants will reduce their own stroke risk by being physically active. Stroke Foundation chief executive Sharon McGowan said every dollar raised through Stride4stroke would have an impact. "Funds raised will go towards vital Stroke Foundation programs like StrokeLine (1800 787 653) and follow up services to help survivors and their families transition to life after," Ms McGowan said. This November, join Clive and register for Stride4stroke www.stride4stroke.org.au Do it by yourself or grab some mates and form a team to keep you motivated.

Bike engines set to roar The roar of motorcycles will engulf Cranbourne on Saturday 27 October as the community gears up for one of the City of Casey's biggest annual events. Busted with drugs, cash By Brendan Rees

A Cranbourne West man is one of four people arrested and charged as part of a police investigation into drug trafficking in the southern suburbs. Southern Metropolitan Divisional Response Unit investigators with the assistance of the Special Operations Group, Dog Squad, Echo Task Force, Australian Federal Police and the Frankston Police Service Area carried out search warrants on Tuesday 17 October. A 27-year-old Cranbourne West man was also arrested at a Faith Court home about 3pm where a search warrant was executed. A number of items were located and seized including two Harley Davidson motorcycles, one car, cash and a quantity of what is alleged to be cocaine and methyl-amphetamine. He was charged with drug related offences and faced the Frankston Magistrates' Court on Thursday 17 October and will reappear again in December. Police arrested a 28-year-old Seaford man in a Frankston shopping centre car park about 12.20pm. He was charged with numerous offences including trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs of dependence and was subsequently remanded in custody. He is due to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for a filing hearing on 24 October. Brigade cleans up By Brendan Rees The community has banded together to raise about $1200 for the Warneet-Blind Bight fire brigade on Saturday 20 October. The fundraiser was part of the brigade's annual Mega Community Garage Sale where residents registered with the brigade and then held their own garage sales on the day. More than 40 residents registered with the brigade by making a donation. Activities held at the brigade included a sausage sizzle, raffle, a visit from the Casey 360 Bus and the CFA Community Trailer on display. For the first time this year brigade members utilised the Blind Bight Community Centre car park by selling bacon and egg rolls, car boot
Warneet-Blind Bight fire brigade members Patricia, Trish, Bec, Danielle, Racheal, Sandra and Sandy. 186590 sales, raffle, coffee van and a community safety table with interactive activities.
"Both areas received great feedback from community members and we will continue to improve this event for next year," brigade secretary and treasurer Debra Sevastianov said. All money raised will go towards the operational needs of the brigade. "We are fully volunteered and need to raise funds, ourselves, to continue the service we provide," Ms Sevastianov said. "The brigade would like to thank all who attended and look forward to seeing you all next year. We would also like to acknowledge the support we have received from the Star newspaper." "Our new fundraising Committee did a fantastic job on the day and behind the scenes," she added.

Millions for Hall Rd By Brendan Rees Casey Council has welcomed the Victorian Government's $169 million commitment to duplicate Hall Road in Cranbourne West. Council believes the State Government's commitment to duplicating more than five kilometres from McCormicks Road to Cranbourne-Frankston Road, and doubling the existing two lanes to four would ease congestion in one of Melbourne's fastest growing suburbs. Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said council had recently added the road and associated intersections to its advocacy campaign, Commit to Casey. "It's good to see the Government isn't waiting until these areas are fully developed before upgrading the surrounding infrastructure," Cr Ablett said. "Commit to Casey is now the most successful local government advocacy campaign in Victorian history, with more than $1 billion promised by both sides of politics." It comes as Casey Councillors voted in September to advocate for the State Government and Opposition to duplicate Hall Road as well as upgrade the intersections of Hall Road/Evans Road and Hall Road/CranbourneFrankston Road. Cr Ablett also welcomed the Andrew's Government's $54.3 million commitment to convert two roundabouts on Western Port Highway at Ballarto Road and CranbourneFrankston Road into signalled intersections. Cr Ablett said it was now up to the Opposition to match the latest commitment to ensure it's delivered, regardless of who wins the November State Election. "We won't stop pushing our political leaders to deliver the infrastructure our community deserves until election day," Cr Ablett said. "The next government, whoever it is, can rest assured we'll be pushing them to deliver their promises."
Cranbourne MP Jude Perera, Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards and Premier Daniel Andrews announced the major upgrades to roads. Picture: CONTRIBUTED
Save Cranbourne West Residents Group president Ray Walker said the State Government's announcement was "what we wanted all along."
"It fulfils all the requirements of what we were asking for," he said. "Hall Road is a major arterial road; congested and dangerous, and it links from East Link all the way through Carrum Downs and through Cranbourne West." However, Mr Walker said the intersection of Hall Road and Evans Road was a "black spot" and was the "biggest priority" in needing to be signalised. "It's extremely dangerous ... I have it on record that they have had a serious number of accidents just this year on the Evan Road intersection."
$200m up for grabs Local organisations and Casey Council have been invited to apply for their share in $200 million of funding from the Australian Government's Building Better Regions Fund. Regional Development Victoria has announced that round three of the fund is open with $45 million earmarked for tourism related infrastructure projects that will help stimulate local economies. Initiated by the Australian Government, the $641.6 million Building Better Regions Fund has been set up to create jobs, drive economic growth and build stronger regional communities across the country. "We're calling on not-for-profit organisations and agencies to put their hat in the ring and apply for a grant to channel more investment in our local economy and build better outcomes," Regional Development Australia (RDA) Melbourne Chair, Steve Kozlowski said. There are two streams of funding available - the Community Investments stream which funds community activities, new local events and regional strategic plans along with the Infrastructure Projects stream. Each stream funds projects and initiatives up to $10 million with minimum funding amounts starting at $5,000 for the Community Investment stream and $20,000 for the Infrastructure Projects stream. Mr Kozlowski said the Fund helped achieve fantastic local economic outcomes" for Melbourne and gets projects "off the ground." Interested applicants are urged to contact the Regional Development Australia Melbourne office to receive a letter of support for their project. The closing date for applications is 15 November 2018. THE LOWDOWN Q&A
THREE … fashion tips for horse racing carnivals...
with Arj Barker
How passionate are you about MotoGP racing? Well to be honest, I don't know a whole lot about it, but I think it's fantastic that these doctors are able to have an exciting hobby outside of their busy work hours. What are you looking forward to about the Cranbourne Wave Off? When they approached me, they asked if I was afraid of heights. So that tells me there are heights involved, and that's a lot different to the gigs I usually get, so I'm looking forward to getting high (literally - I know this is a family event!). Have you been to the MotoGP at Phillip Island? I have not, unless I have, but something happened that made forget, like an alien abduction, or a massive conk on the head. But I don't think so. You are appearing at Bunjil Place on October 26. What can fans expect? They can expect to laugh a lot and have a fantastic time, and thus remind themselves why they came along in the first place, sort of like a cool self-fulfilling prophecy. Will you include your GP wave off experience in your Narre Warren show? It's possible. It really just depends how the day goes, and if something funny happens. I'll try! What would you say to mums and dads who are going to turn out with their kids to see you wave off the riders? I will give them my word that I will keep the swearing down to an absolute medium. JK, I'll keep it clean. Can't speak for the GPs though - it's race day, and they've got an Rx for moto madness!
Arj Barker.
1
Be strict about dressing for the season. There is always one main thing judges will look out for - and that is, wearing seasonappropriate fabrics, millinery and accessories. For spring/summer wear straw, silk, sinamay and any trans-seasonal fabrics.
2
Majority rules. When entering a fashions on the field competition there is often anywhere from three to five judges. The judges have to make a decision on who will win, which means they must agree on just one person. This is tough for entrants because you want to have your own signature style, but at the same time, if it's a little out there, you may not please the majority of the judges.
3
Research the judges. If you find a race-enthusiast-turned-judge, you can often tell what their personal style is. Are they more classic, fashion forward or vintage? If you know a judge and what styles they lean towards, you can determine whether to wear a certain style of outfit.

BUSINESS PROFILE
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION THIS WEEKEND!
Ricky Sutton, Rino Travaglini, Eddie Travaglini and Rebecca Parker of Australian Butchers Store are Picture: GARY SISSONS excited to be heading home to Berwick. 186002
Australian Butchers Store is heading to Berwick. But for owner Eddie Travaglini, the store's opening is more of a homecoming. The Travaglini name is synonymous with the Aussie butcher industry. For most, it's linked to Tasman Butchers, while others will relate it to Brookmere Meats. Both are correct. Tasman Butchers opened in Berwick in 1991, the brainchild of Eddie's father, Rino Travaglini. Having worked in the meat industry since the early 1960s, Rino knew a thing or two about the competitive business and the Enterprise Avenue store became a local institution, as well as one of the first 'big-box' Tasman Meat stores. Over time, the store traded as both Tasman Meat and Brookmere Meats, but upheld the same philosophy; "the service must be great, the quality must be perfect and the price must be low". The Travaglinis remained a part of Tasman until 2013, when the company was sold. But unable to stay away from the industry for too long, Eddie and Rino opened Australian Butchers Store in Dandenong in 2015. Then, in September 2018, it was announced that Tasman Meats had entered administration and the Berwick store was up for sale. Eddie, who had expanded his Australian Butchers Store chain to include stores in Mernda, Boronia and Somerville in just three years, admits that he jumped at the chance to purchase the Tasman store and "return home". "Berwick was the first of the big Tasmans," he said. "I remember when there were paddocks
and an airstrip behind us. Where the university is there was an airstrip and we used to sit there at lunchtime and watch the planes come in over Clyde Road ... So taking it back is like the jewel in the crown. It's an institution business and it's something I'm really proud of. "It's our grassroots, so getting it back means everything." When Eddie reopens the store, it will trade as Australian Butchers Store offering premium quality wholesale meat, poultry, game and gourmet products. With roughly 106 employees, Australian Butchers Store supply products to chefs, restaurateurs, catering companies and local families. Eddie said he "absolutely" learnt from his time at Tasman. "You're always learning and you're always looking to perfecting what you're doing," Eddie said. "The mentality (of Australian Butchers Store) is probably the same as we've always had, and the theory behind the business is the same, but what we offer is a bigger range. The range is everything as far as I'm concerned we try to offer multiples of everything. "Customer service is still number one; you look after them, they keep coming back." Excited about the newest chapter in the Australian Butchers Store story, Eddie will take over Berwick Tasman on 29 October. The store will only be closed for a few days for refurbishment. "I just want people to know that we're back and it's going to reopen with a bang. We're going to give the Berwick community back what they deserve." Big day out for centre Hundreds of people turned out to raise about $6000 for Blairlogie Living and Learning organisation's annual open day on Sunday 21 October. There was plenty for the family to see and do including performances from the Balla Balla Ukes, BAM All Stars dance troup, Kellie De Stefano singing, and Matt Stone keeping the crowds going with sing-a-long favourites. The event attracted crowds of about 1500 people, which was blessed with blue skies, leading manager Beverley Connor to say the day was a great success. "The annual open day is our major fundraiser for the year but we also use it as a day to showcase our facility and services to the broader community," she said. There were displays from the Pearcedale Fire Brigade, Port Phillip Historical Machinery Society Inc, Cranbourne Casey Mens Shed, a local
group of motorcycle riders, and vintage vehicles including tractors, vans, trucks and caravan. The event also featured market stalls, a jumping castle, spinning wheel, trash and treasure, hot food, tilleys cups, raffle, plants, and vegetables which all were donated by local growers fresh from their farms. Cakes, slices, muffins and scones were made by staff and friends. "We were sponsored by the Pearcedale Community Bank Branch of the Bendigo Bank for the day as well as receiving many donations from the local community," Ms Beverley said. Blairlogie, which is based in Cranbourne South has been supporting people with a disability since 1987, offering a wide range of services and supports for those aged between five and 65 years. All money raised will go towards purchasing equipment and resources for the people Blairlogie supports.

The gift of smiles By Brendan Rees A generous donation of hand-crafted toys will bring more smiles to children this Christmas and disadvantaged families. VCAL students at Hampton Park Secondary College have been busy making wooden toys as part of a numeracy project, which were all donated to Hampton Park Community House on Thursday 18 October during a presentation ceremony. A board game of noughts and crosses, trucks, a rocking horse, work tools and even a billy-cart were among the items donated. Later Years Pathways Leader Darryn
O'Connor said he was impressed with the efforts of the students. "This was the final project for the 2018 Senior VCAL class at Hampton Park and the students worked hard to make sure their finished products were first class so their donations could make a difference in the community," he said. Hampton Park Community House manager Tania Sacco graciously accepted the donations, saying the toys would go towards the childcare facility, families in need assistance at Christmas time, and also be auctioned off to raise funds to support the Community House.

When Year 3 student Sophie puts her mind to something, there's no stopping her. The Pearcedale Primary School student, who volunteers together with her family for the Mums Supporting Families In Need, a Peninsula based charity, wanted to help more families doing it tough. So she organised a meeting with her school principal Simon Anderson where she put forward some fundraising ideas. "She presented information about the charity and a letter about her ideas to support them," said Mr Anderson. "Following this I took the letter to School Council who overwhelmingly approved the Free Dress Day." From the event, held on Friday 19 October, three van loads of goods and $846 in cash were donated. Sophie also spoke at an assembly, sharing a video that she had made and introduced a guest speaker from the charity. "Sophie's initiative and confidence to undertake this project is a credit to her and her family," Mr Anderson said. "We are constantly amazed at the overwhelming generosity of our school community."

PREMIUM LIVING AT CLARINDA PARK THE wait is over! At the heart of the thriving Clarinda Park community, McCormick’s Rise is a truly unique development. The project is adjacent to extensive parklands and a range of fantastic amenities including the Clarinda Village shopping precinct, the Barton Primary School and the Mayone Bulluk Family and Community Centre. “Clarinda Park is one of Abiwood’s pre-eminent estates and encapsulates everything we stand for” said to Simon Postregna, Abiwood’s marketing director. “Our desire is to create brilliant, activated and connected spaces with a strong sense of community. McCormick’s Rise is the jewel in the Clarinda Park crown and represents a final opportunity for homebuyers wanting to make Clarinda Park their home. The McCormick’s Rise development has been well considered and beautifully crafted to ensure that it will not disappoint” Designed by MPS Architects, McCormick’s Rise is a premium development, offering lowmaintenance 3 and 4-bedroom townhouses. Each full turn-key townhouse will have high quality appliances and finishes with extensive landscaping to both front and rear gardens designed and delivered by award winning Fleming’s Nurseries. The name McCormick’s Rise is derived from the previous owners of the Clarinda Park land (the McCormick family) who were prominent local farmers before the Cranbourne West landscape changed into a premium address for new home buyers. The Clarinda Village shopping precinct (including an IGA supermarket, gym, medical centre, Montessori pre-school and a number of specialty shops and cafes) is the hub of the Clarinda Park community. The village, Barton Primary School and Mayone Bulluk Family and Community Centre are all just a short stroll through the landscaped
parklands of Clarinda Park. A swim school (to be delivered in 2019) will also complement the existing array of facilities at Clarinda Village. With the Trueman Reserve and Barton Recreation Reserve (under construction) abutting McCormick’s Rise, you’ll be spoilt for choice when heading outdoors. Whether it be a barbecue in the park, a hit of cricket in the nets, taking the kids to the playground or the dog to the off-leash dog park, a kick of the soccer ball, a run, a leisurely stroll, a hit
of tennis, lawn bowls, bike ride or a casual picnic, all of these activities are right on your doorstep. If that’s not enough, the Ranfurlie Golf Club is just around the corner Whilst McCormick’s Rise residents won’t have to travel far for their daily essentials, other amenities are also within easy reach. McCormick’s Rise residents will benefit from excellent road connections provided by the nearby Western Port Highway, Eastlink and Monash Freeway. Merinda Park station, The Cranbourne
Activity Centre and the Marriott Waters shopping centre are also an easy drive away. A 30 minute drive south will take you to one of Victoria’s most popular tourist destinations, the Mornington Peninsula and Melbourne’s CBD is approximately 45 minutes. Secure your future at McCormick’s Rise with a 10% deposit and the balance to be paid upon completion. Call 1300 220 205 or go to mccormicksrise.com.au ● 12402895

IN BRIEF
$40m racing boost Horse racing at Cranbourne and Pakenham has received a major boost with a commitment from the State Government to build new infrastructure and create hundreds of new jobs. Minister for Racing Martin Pakula announced on Monday 22 October a $17.5 million investment to create new facilities at both the Cranbourne Training Complex and Pakenham Racing Club as part of a $40.1 million joint funding package. Thoroughbred training at the Caulfield Racecourse Reserve will be relocated over the next five years, to open up the reserve for greater public access and recreational use. The Labor Government will invest more than $6 million at the Cranbourne Training Complex for the construction of additional stabling, an inside grass track, an equine pool and tunnel upgrades to accommodate additional horses. More than $8 million will also go to the Pakenham Racing club for new stabling, new uphill grass and synthetic tracks and an additional equine pool. The project will accommodate an additional 600 horse boxes and create up to 200 new jobs during construction, with a total economic impact estimated to be more than $250 million. Racing Victoria and the Melbourne Racing Club will contribute $22.6 million towards the project. Works at both facilities will begin immediately, to help relocations which may begin from mid-2020. Trainers will have up to five years to relocate from their existing facilities at Caulfield Racecourse Reserve. The Government has approved a long-term lease between Caulfield Racecourse Reserve Trust and the Melbourne Racing Club to increase recreational opportunities and secure horse racing at the reserve for another 65 years. As part of this, the Government will provide an additional $1 million to support the Trust to
Peace disturbance at Banjo Paterson Park Banjo Paterson Park in Lynbrook and Lynbrook Railway Station are becoming hotspots for unlawful gatherings of youth disturbing the peace. City of Casey will be seeking assistance from police to undertake a safety audit at Banjo Paterson Park. "My understanding is that the police response to these issues isn't that bad," Cr Wayne Smith said. "Council and the Lynbrook Residents Association for a long time have been advocating and in particular have been lobbying for increased lighting in that area and video surveillance. "It's something that we all agree should be there but the funding is a big issue."

Police hope CCTV images will identify a man responsible for a bike theft in Junction Village on Sunday 14 October. It's alleged an unknown man has attended a residential property on Holbourne Drive and taken a BMX bike, about 9pm. Police have released still images of the stolen bicycle and the man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries. The man has a number of distinctive tattoos and police are confident that someone will recognise him. Cranbourne Police are investigating. new facilities would also provide a major economic boost for the racing industry and help ensure thoroughbred racing in Victoria "keeps pace with international standards." Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said thoroughbred racing was a "vital part of our community" and the major investment would provide local jobs and ensure these facilities remained "world class for years to come."

SPORT
Tom’s a real speed demon By Russell Bennett Tom Bramich pilots what are essentially rocket ships on two wheels, but there's so much more to his journey as a motorcycle racer than just outright speed. The Beaconsfield 21-year-old has composure, maturity, discipline, racing IQ and sheer talent in equal measure - all the ingredients of a champion. Testament to that is Bramich following in the footsteps of Aussie motorsport legends such as Mick Doohan and Daryl Beattie as winners of the coveted RK Chains Samurai Trophy. The annual award, presented earlier this month, recognised Bramich as Australia's most improved and outstanding young talent both on track, and off - during the 2018 Australian Superbike Championship (ASBK) season. The trophy - one of the most iconic in Aussie motorsport - capped off a remarkable season for Bramich, who earlier claimed the Australian Supersport 300 title. He races all around Australia at the nation's most iconic racetracks, and capped off his Supersport title in style last weekend with a win at Phillip Island. His remarkable consistency is one of his biggest strengths, but he'd be the first to make one key admission - there's no way he could achieve what he has to this point without his incredible support network behind him, including his family, friends, sponsors and crew. Bramich raced in two classes this year - Supersport 300, a premier class including a range of different manufacturers and bikes; and the R3 Cup, an incentive-based Yamaha cup. It was at South Australia's Tailem Bend where Bramich qualified in pole position, and picked up a pair of wins and a second-place finish - where he first started to believe he could be in contention for this year's Supersport title. Another key factor behind Bramich's success this season was Trevor Manley, who he worked with to continually improve his bike. "Trevor went above and beyond every single time to make our bike better and faster," he added. Not only did Bramich clinch the title at Phillip Island, he also picked up a race win to do so. He said simply focusing on winning the race kept any potential distraction of his place in the championship out of his mind. "The thing in our class is that you can't be conservative - you have to always try and at-
Picture: COURTESY OF RUSSELL COLVIN tack and go for the lead, otherwise you'll just end up nowhere," he said. "I think that really helped me narrow my focus because I just knew I couldn't think that way. It was actually easier to try and go for the win than to just try and conserve points. "Winning the championship, the main feeling was relief - and just feeling so happy for everyone who helped me get there; all my sponsors, Trevor, my mum and dad, and everyone else. "I get all the glory of being on the bike and winning, but without the people behind me and backing me it wouldn't be possible for me to even be there. "I was just so happy for the people who'd done so much to help me get there. Just having your team believe in you, no matter what, makes such a huge difference. It doesn't just all come together - you have to have the team, the bike, and then the rider." Moving forward, Bramich is weighing up his options - which could lead to competing in Europe next season. "I really hope it opens up a few opportunities to race in the World Championship - that's where I'd like to set my sights - or to race here domestically on a 600 Supersport bike," he said. "We've got a fair few options to consider and we have to work through those in the next few weeks." But he knows those options wouldn't even be possible if not for the support he's received along the way so far. "With a lot of friends and local businesses in the area, it made it possible for us to even race," he said. "They've been a great support, not only in terms of sponsorship, but just their support at the track.
Tom Bramich is a star on the rise on two wheels. "Just them being there means they believe in me, and when we win, we all win together and that's the fun part." His is an extremely expensive, logistically challenging sport to travel to, and compete, all over the country. "It's an expensive sport, and without people helping you it wouldn't be possible to do. It's just the nature of the sport," he said. When it comes to the key to his success in 2018, it's impossible to look past Bramich's remarkable consistency. He didn't finish off the overall podium at any one round, with third his lowest result.
Picture: RUSSELL BENNETT He also didn't have any race DNFs (Did Not Finish) to his name. He puts this, in part, down to his analytical way of thinking while riding, and his ability to execute a carefully-calculated strategy. "I don't think I'm the fastest outright rider, but I'm probably one of the smartest," he said. Bramich was keen to thank his sponsors in helping him achieve the remarkable in 2018. They include: Yamaha Motor Australia, JLT Sport, Nolan Helmets, Ricondi, Forma Boots, TM Performance, Nelsigns, Autobarn Narre Warren, Extreme Clean, Boardpro, SJG Plumbing, Northside Prestige, and Pablo's Motorcycle Tyres.
Meadows making it count By Russell Bennett For the Devon Meadows Cricket Club and its faithful, the unfurling of the Panthers' 2017/18 WGCA District division premiership flag on Saturday signified more about what's to come than what has just transpired. The Panthers are hell-bent on making their 50th season one to remember. Since last season it had been around 15 years since their last first XI premiership - with a number of disappointing finishes to promising campaigns along the way. And now that they're into the Premier division for the first time since the competition restructure, they're doing everything they can to stay there. "We've probably got a bit more depth this year, which you obviously need for the Premier grade," club president Mick Floyd said at the flag unfurling on Saturday morning. "A lot of clubs have gone up to Premier (from District) and either just held on or gone back down straight away for various reasons, so we were pretty determined for that not to happen with us. "We found before the restructure (from A Grade to Premier, District, Sub-District) that we were that side that would win three, four, 32 STAR NEWS

or five games so we were never really in relegation danger but were never really a finals contender either. It doesn't improve your cricket if you're not playing in meaningful games for large parts of the season. "It was important in the off-season to add a bit of depth and not have to rely on one or two guys, because if they happen to have a bad day you could be in strife. "We've got a list with depth with bat and ball - we bat right down, with seven or eight bowling options as well. "We're a little on the older side - we're not shying away from that - but there are some good kids coming through as well. "The junior numbers are good - we've got five junior sides in - and we're starting to see some of the benefits now with good young players coming through. "We've added a fifth (senior) side for the first time ever in our 50th year too. We talk about it being a big year, and we've added another side - and we've got players spare. "It would have been nice to get into the Premier division a few years prior, but things have all worked out really well. The off-season has gone well and we've had good support from a number of sponsors that have jumped on

But the Panthers, long viewed from the outside as a club that should have been mixing it with the big boys of Premier, aren't content with just making up the numbers in the WGCA's top flight. "We want to go up and ultimately win the Premier division," Floyd said. "Winning District is nice, but it's second
division. We've always considered ourselves as a Premier club - one of the leading clubs in the competition off the field - and now we've got the opportunity to do it on the field, and to prove it. "The number of well wishes we had after winning the flag last season was fantastic, but also the sentiment from a lot of people was 'it's about time'. It was, and now we're in the top grade it's time we make a fist of it there." cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Locals sweep key awards There was a strong local flavour at the 2017/18 Victorian Greyhound Awards at Melbourne's Crown Casino recently. In a great night for the industry, Sandown chairman Neil Brown was awarded the Ken Carr Medal for excellence within Victorian greyhound racing, while breeder, owner and trainer Ashlee Terry was awarded the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' Award. The Ken Carr Medal is considered the highest award for excellence within the Victorian greyhound racing industry and Brown - a greyhound administrator and historian - has held roles in greyhound racing for almost 50 years. "I'm never lost for words but my family have kept a great secret here," Brown said. "I'll steal a word from the late Ron Nestor who said he got more out of the sport than he ever put in, and I feel the same." Brown has bred and trained greyhounds, been a member on the Victorian Greyhound of the Year Panel, the original Topgun Panel and still contributes greatly to the GRV's Hall of Fame Committee, as well as having held the position of CEO at Greyhounds Australasia. It was a chance introduction for Brown that started his love for greyhound racing. "I was waiting to buy footy finals tickets outside MCG, and a friend I was with said let's go across to Olympic Park and have a look at the races," he said. "From that moment I was hooked and, living near Sandown Park, I began going there every Thursday night, which I still do today." Terry, a 27-year-old greyhound breeder and trainer from Cranbourne South claimed the Ned Bryant 'Silver Fox' Award - recognising outstanding achievement in the training, breeding or promotion of greyhound racing. Terry claimed her first Group 1 win as a trainer with Maja Mahi Mahi in the 2017 Sapphire Crown and has had stunning success as a breeder also.
Neil Brown with the Ken Carr Medal. "I'm very honoured and very surprised and a little bit nervous," Terry said. "Andrew [Paraskevas] and I bred the litters together, and it's probably a bit more special when you breed them yourself because you've had them since they were puppies and you watch them grow up and race and be successful. It is probably something everyone in the sport dreams to do." Terry thanked Andrew Paraskevas, along with trainer and rearer, Karen Leek. "I've wanted to be a greyhound trainer since I was five years old and I think we've improved a lot since we've been trainers," she said. "I couldn't imagine doing anything else, it's very much a passion of mine and who wouldn't want to wake up every day and do something they love? I feel very lucky."

Wet weather wreaks havoc By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 3 On a Saturday marred by wet weather, most games across the West Gippsland Cricket Association were abandoned. PREMIER Only Clyde's clash with Cardinia was completed, with the contest reduced to 35 overs per side. Batting first, Clyde was dismissed for 146 with - once again - a host of batsmen making starts but falling at inopportune times, often due to rash shots. Seven Cougars batsmen reached double figures, but only quick bowler Nick Sadler's invaluable 45-run cameo made any lasting impact, while Travis Wheller (3/16) and Matt Welsh (3/20) were the pick of the Bulls bowlers. Cardinia opener, skipper Alex Nooy, scored a quickfire 39 runs, before falling with his side still on just 3/47. AJ Walker also made a start, before falling to Shane White, but it was Wheller (48) who capped off his strong bowling effort with an elegant knock with the bat and essentially steered his side home. The Bulls (7/150) ultimately won by three wickets in the 32nd over - a result against a fellow finals aspirant that could prove crucial in shaping the eventual make-up of the top four. proving to be too strong for the Bullants at Officer. Officer was sent into bat and contributions from Ash Smith (42), Peter Symons (26) and James Parnall (23 not out) helped the Bullants post a total of 5/136 in 27 overs. Ashish Uppal (2/26) bowled well for the Rebels. Rebel opener Veerpartap Singh (47) guided his team's innings and was well supported by Kulith Rabel (25) as Cranbourne Meadows chased down the required runs in 26 overs. Cardinia claimed a home win against Clyde. Clyde's Warwick Weir (36 not out), Joel Avard (27) and Daniel Walton (26) kept the scoreboard ticking over, but Cardinia's bowling attack of Daniel Salvato (2/16), Josh Grogan (2/25) and Matt Thompson (2/40) all claimed key wickets as the Cougars posted a total of
6/134 off 35 overs. In reply, Cardinia's openers got off to a great start as Brad Remy (50) and Dwayne Doig (32) combined for an opening stand of 87. Despite the best efforts of Dean Williams (3/34), the Bulls chased down the total in 28 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Carlisle Park and NNG/Maryknoll was washed out, as was Tooradin and Emerald's encounter. SUB-DISTRICT Merinda Park defended a modest total against Kooweerup to claim the points at Donnelly Reserve. At 3/6, the Cobras were in deep trouble, but solid contributions from Paul Wiles (32) and Amreek Mann (24 not out) ensured a disastrous total was avoided. Eventually, Merinda Park was

dismissed for 121 in 28 overs as Jai Lewis (3/14), Arie Hazendonk (2/19) and Ron Bright Jr (2/21) bowled consistently for the Demons. The Cobras bowlers were simply superb as the Demons top-order faltered and found themselves at 4/20. Merinda Park's Agyapal Sidhu (4/12) and Amreek Mann (4/17) combined to rip through Kooweerup's batting lineup. Kooweerup was dismissed for 89 in 30 overs. Amreek Mann was the match-winner, contributing greatly with the bat and ball. Matches between Lang Lang and Gembrook, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc and Nyora, and Pakenham and Catani were all abandoned. On Saturday morning, just before the weekend's rain-affected round, the WGCA issued a statement on its website - in part saying: "Before any more people start complaining & blaming the Board for not calling this week's matches off due to wet weather, try reading the rules. All the current rules & by-laws are available on the website for everyone to see". The statement went on to read: "The Board can call rounds off, yes, but only after all the clubs have contacted the league & advised of their local conditions before 11am. If clubs fail to do this, then the Board cannot make the call. "The WGCA is one of the largest geographical associations around & weather conditions can be drastically different across the area the association covers, so without the cooperation of the clubs, such decisions are virtually impossible to make".
Where there’s a will, there’s a way By Russell Bennett While the wintry weather returned to wreak havoc on cricket grounds right across the south-east on Saturday, the incredible curators at Shepley Oval in Dandenong worked tirelessly in a bid to allow 48 overs to be bowled - despite play being delayed until just after 3.30pm. The Panthers were hosting Melbourne Uni in their Round 4 Victorian Premier Cricket clash and were sent in under ominous skies after losing the toss. The star opening batting combination of skipper Tom Donnell (25) and Brett Forsyth (12) combined for just 22 in their first wicket stand before Forsyth became the first of Steve Reid’s three victims - caught behind by keeperbatsman Jarrod Martignago. Donnell fell soon after at 2/49, bowled by AJ Gregory, and continued the tone of Panthers batsmen departing just when they’d made a start. No less than five Dandenong batsmen reached double figures throughout the day’s play, but Donnell and Lincoln Edwards (33) were the only two to pass 20. In fact Donnell has departed in the 20s in three of his four hits so far this season - the other being a stellar unbeaten 90 in Round 3 against Northcote. Edwards looked in fine touch on Saturday until he was bowled by Liam Scammell - the first of his two scalps as he finished with the impressive 2/8 from his five overs. It was Reid who was the biggest shining light in the Melbourne Uni attack as he finished with 3/27 from his 14 overs, while Wes Agar (1/29) was the other wicket-taker. Casey-South Melbourne's game against Melbourne at the Albert Ground was abandoned. It’s important to note that the Victorian Premier Cricket firsts, seconds and fourths will play a Rule 18 one-dayer next Saturday, while the thirds will continue their Round 4 twodayer. In other Dandenong Cricket Club news, young spinner Sophie Molineux was simply awe-inspiring for the Southern Stars as the left-armer claimed the impressive figures of 4/14 from nine overs in Australia’s one day international victory over Pakistan in Malaysia on Saturday. Batting first, Australia posted 7/273 thanks in no small part to skipper Meg Lanning’s 12th one-day ton and first since her return from shoulder surgery. Then it was Molineux’s turn to shine as Pakistan was dismissed for 123 - sealing an unas34 STAR NEWS

Local stars shine in draft By Hayley Wildes
Dandenong Premier Cricket star Tom Donnell again made a start after play finally got underway on Picture: ROB CAREW Saturday. 186521 sailable series win for the Aussies after game two of the three-game series. In the Dandenong District Cricket Association over the weekend, all junior games, and senior games - both synthetic and turf - were called off. Springvale South’s Round 2 showdown with Berwick at Alex Nelson Reserve, Mordialloc’s clash with North Dandenong at Ben
Kavanagh Reserve, Hallam Kalora Park’s clash with St Mary’s at Hallam Recreation Reserve, and Heinz Southern Districts’ showdown with Buckley Ridges at KM Reedy Reserve will all take place this coming Saturday. Hallam Kalora Park, Springvale South, Buckley Ridges, and North Dandenong all recorded crucial first-up wins in the seasonopening round.
In what was a remarkable day for football in the region, Tuesday's 2018 AFLW Draft saw two local stars taken with picks five and six, respectively. Dandenong Stingrays captain, Jordyn Allen is now a Magpie after Collingwood swooped on the talented midfielder with its first selection and fifth overall pick. One pick later, Gippsland Power captain and Cora Lynn product, Tyla Hanks was selected by Melbourne with the sixth overall pick. Both 18-year-olds were standouts in the TAC Cup Girls competition and at the national championships, where they played for Victoria Country. Hanks has been on the radar of AFLW clubs for some time and while her ability to play the game is tantalising, her leadership qualities and knowledge of the game is what sets her apart already at such a young age. Allen is also a terrific leader and possesses a great ability to burst away from contested situations and use her sublime skills to find a target when others would struggle. Both will slot straight into their respective teams and will be looking to have a big impact on the competition in 2019. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Cranbourne’s bounce back CRANBOURNE BOWLS Side 1 Division 2 After starting the season with two losses, Cranbourne is back on track with a win at home. All four skips steered their teams to victory by smashing Glen Waverley by 52 shots and picking up all 18 points. Skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield and his team won another close one to give them three wins out of three for the year so far. The team started slowly and had a few bad patches but Ron got them back in line to record another great win. Frank Byrne and his team of Neil Drummond, John McKenna and Graeme Wood were in hot form with a 20-shot win, while skip Barry 'The General' Thomas and his team of Peter Elgar, Gavin Wright and Garry Hunt were in sizzling form, winning by 27 shots. Thomas went on to say: "This is the biggest win I have been involved in for many years. Thanks to my team who all played some amazing bowls today". Recently promoted skip Sue Hudson had to get her team to dig deep to join the party. She was three shots down on the card with only one end to play so she gathered her team and asked them for one last effort for the day. Her team did not let Sue down and they managed to pick up an incredible four shots and won by one shot for the day to the loud cheers of the home crowd.
