With Edna his family grew and together they moved to The Basin with their two children, Sharon and Ralph.

"We were a very happy family; we lived for the kids and really enjoyed life."

That passion for work and his children he said was a big part of his life and although he

said he worked most of his life he never regretted any of it.

"I had to be doing something I couldn't I never used to sit around doing nothing I had to be doing something making things, the leadlight used to keep me quite busy."

Asked what he had planned for his 105th birthday, Mr Richards said he'd just keep taking the years in his stride.

"I got a letter from the queen and governor general for our 75th wedding anniversary and now I've got a lot more for the 100th birthday, so I'm not sure when you get another," he joked.

A century of celebrations were in the air on 8 October as Ferntree Gully resident, Doug Richards marked off his 100th birthday When asked how it felt to turn 100, Mr Richards said he was just treating it like another year.

"I just took it in me stride," he said.

About 60 Friends and family stopped by his home on the special day with plenty of cards and gifts to celebrate the century.

The great grandfather of seven spoke to the Mail about his life growing up in Bendigo, getting

married and the importance of family.

His late wife, Edna Richards lived in Bendigo and from there a marriage of 75 years blossomed.

We had a very good life," he said.

"We had a good family, a boy and a girl, and you grow up with them, get interested in them, and they become your life. " "Edna and I met at a roller skating rink in Bendigo. I was mad on it, but I tried to get her interested in it but there was no way - she didn't want a bar of it."

Standing up for animals I would like to express my respect for Jenny Moxham, for her unwavering commitment, continuing accuracy, and absolute stoicism in her support of animal rights.

Although many committed meat eaters may be unwilling to red her letters - perhaps even having a snigger - this is an issue that must continue to be addressed, however uncomfortable both for environmental and animal welfare reasons.

I seriously question the arrogance and misinformation that allows us to believe that the torture and slaughter of intelligent, sentient creatures is somehow OK and/or essential to our health, survival and, indeed, happiness.

It is not.

Even replacing one or two meat-based meals a week is a great first step, not at all difficult, and opens up a whole new world of taste sensations.

Animals Australia has a wealth of information readily available.

Some dam thoughts As most people will know, I have been out of action for most of this year.

It all started in February with a minor heart attack, plus other medical problems, then

blow me over I have had chronic back and leg pain 24/7, no relief anywhere, so I am going cold turkey without pain killers as they do not work.

This is a repeat of my back problem 18 months ago when I was using a stick just like today.

Now on a brighter note, I have been pondering what could be done to enhance the southern wall of the Silvan dam above McCarthy Road.

My first thoughts were to place five wind generators on top of the dam wall.

I would say there would be a lot of free wind coming off the lake surface.

Youtube has some great vertical wind generators.

Or secondly, Monbulk could have national kite flying event with the participation of Melbourne Water.

It should not be a major tourist event but something for the local residents to get involved with.

More trains, more often It is now over four years since I first wrote to Monbulk MP James Merlino regarding the infrequent train service beyond Ringwood on the Belgrave and Lilydale lines, off-peak and on weekdays.

With no improvement in sight, I thought that I should again raise the subject.

It is now almost 44 years since the present frequency (30 minutes) was introduced in January 1975, and with most other lines now having trains more frequent than that, it really is time that the Outer East received some improvement, too.

Since 1975 all level crossings between Box Hill and Ringwood have been removed, as well as three on the Ringwood to Belgrave line.

Removal of level crossings is supposed to improve train services but this has not happened.

In addition, the sections between Ringwood and Bayswater and Ringwood and Croydon have both been duplicated since 1975, but no changes have been made to the weekday frequency in all that time.

It is clear that passenger numbers have grown greatly since 1975. The numbers of cars parked in the streets and car parks around Belgrave, Tecoma, Upwey and Upper Ferntree Gully verify this.

The State Government's decision to greatly increase parking spaces at Belgrave bears out the fact that demand for increased services is there.

As I have pointed out previously, the extra services could easily be introduced at negligible cost by using some of the trains lying idle at Ringwood and elsewhere during the day to provide a shuttle services, Belgrave to

This would provide a 15-minute frequency instead of the 30-minute gap.

There would be no infrastructure cost and no other appreciable cost other than the employment of a limited number of extra drivers.

The cost of all this for the next 100 years would be less than the cost of the removal of just one level crossing.

The more frequent service would also provide greatly-improved connectivity to other lines, tram lines and the often-infrequent bus services along the way.

Golf club tarnished

By Rowan Forster The heritage listed Emerald Golf and Country Resort is becoming a squatter-infested cesspool - tarnishing decades of cherished memories and history that preceded the iconic venue's closure in 2017.

Filth-strewn lawns, vandalised buildings and drug paraphernalia have become common place at the once active facility.

The vandals are becoming increasingly brazen, pitching tepees on the land and cutting down trees to use as kindling for campfires.

Residents have told of their "heartache" to watch the former cornerstone of the community plunge into a state of disrepair.

Leanne Hanna, who moved to the township about 12 months ago, said it was devastating to see the issue become progressively worse.

"It's distressing when you go down there to walk the dogs and see this kind of thing," she said.

"Next we will have campers moving in and start destroying not only the grounds and environment, but the heritage club house.

"I'm so disappointed this gorgeous golf course is now starting to look like this."

It is believed the owner of the land, Malaysian businessman Alex Wee, is not even aware of the damage being dealt to his property.

Tension within the community has heightened in recent months, with a potentially catastrophic bushfire season on the horizon.

CCTV cameras catch theft A 27-year-old Male from Belgrave was apprehended after a theft of alcohol on 13 October at Belgrave Woolworths.

Police used new CCTV cameras installed in Belgrave to apprehend the man who was released on summons.

and course management failed to reach a workable agreement.

In the time since, the land has served as a "makeshift national park" for the community, accommodating a range of flora and fauna.

It is not yet known what the future of the site holds.

Mr Bullen is doubtful the perpetrators will be caught due to lacking police resources in the township.

"The station isn't even 24/7 and they're often out helping Pakenham Police so I doubt they'd have time for this," he said.

The Emerald Museum has been contacted for comment.

Lilydale resident recognised at awards

By Derek Schlennstedt Retired health professional, 79-year-old Hamish Russell from Lilydale has taken out the prestigious 2018 Victorian Senior of the Year award for his volunteer work to improve health outcomes in the Yarra Ranges.

Mr Russell received the award due to the breadth, reach, and lasting impact of his volunteer work.

Since retiring 24 years ago, he has dedicated himself to volunteering in his local community in the Shires of Yarra ranges and Cardinia, and has worked hard to ensure the provision of high quality health services in the region by setting up a tertiary scholarship program.

Mr Russel said giving back to the community had always been a big part of who he was and said that passion began at school.

"When I was reflecting back to when I left school, the principal was giving his final address to the year 12 saying something along the lines of 'to whom much has been given much is expected' ... I guess I've always felt that way," he said.

"I've been extraordinarily lucky and if I can give back through any skill I've been able to develop then that's a privilege and it's something I love doing and something I love continuing to do."

Hamish Russell from Lilydale has taken out the prestigious 2018 Victorian Senior of the Year award for his volunteer work to improve health outcomes in Melbourne’s outer east. more than 70 students become doctors, nurses or allied health professionals and has contributed to many other positive health care developments in the Yarra Ranges.

The scholarship offers $10,000 in scholarship assistance to tertiary students studying medicine, nursing, allied health or other health sciences, who live in the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

"I was very aware of how much different having a scholarship made things when I was an undergraduate at university."

"How they really made an enormous difference to my ability to concentrate on study and

not be worrying about money all the time."

"It's been wonderful really been some amazing people come through that program."

"In this case equal emphasis is given to scholastic achievement and contribution to community so looking for young people who are already giving back to the community and not just brilliant scholars."

Having lived in the Dandenong Ranges for a number of years Mr Russell also oversaw the amalgamation of nine of the magnificent gardens in the Dandenong Ranges as Chairman of the Dandenong Ranges Gardens Trust.

This amalgamation brought the management and preservation of gardens under one umbrella with Parks Victoria, making them more sustainable in the long term.

Mr Russel said he was humbled and surprised to receive the award and said hoped it would remind other retirees that they can still partake in community work.

"I feel amazed and humbled to receive the award but one that I can then use to inspire others to be involved in their retirement," he said.

"It's extraordinarily important for people who have retired to not become invisible - one of my passions is just because we're retired or older doesn't mean we don't have a role to play in society."

At approximately 2pm on Sunday 7 October a motorcycle rider was travelling on Healesville Koo Wee Rup Road, near Cockatoo.

As the rider came around a bend a truck veered onto the wrong side of the road causing the motorcycle rider to take evasive action.

The rider has come off his bike and been seriously injured, breaking his leg.

Police are appealing for anyone with any information about the incident or anyone who may have dash cam footage of the incident to contact Constable Condron at Narre Warren Police Station on 9705 3111.

Tyre-d of excuses Yarra Ranges Highway patrol are reminding drivers to check the condition of their vehicle On Saturday 20 October a 29-year-old male driver was detected speeding at 98 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Swansea Rd, Lilydale.

The man's vehicle was inspected and found to have severely worn tyres in addition to other issues.

The vehicle was grounded immediately and the driver issued with a defect notice.

The man also received a $322 penalty notice for speeding and incurred four demerit points.

A further $403 penalty notice was issued in relation to the defective tyres.

Mooroolbark assault Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an assault in Mooroolbark on 14 October. .

Police believe a 26-year-old Mulgrave man stepped out of his car on Sheridan Avenue and was knocked unconscious by a group of males about 10.30pm on 14 October.

A friend, who was with the victim at the time rendered assistance.

The victim had earlier been at a festival in St Kilda with friends.

He and another male friend gave two girls who were also at the festival a lift back to their Mooroolbark address.

As they arrived at the address, the victim stepped out of the car and was attacked by 4-5 unknown males.

It is believed the males may have been in a silver Toyota Hilux ute.

The victim's friend drove him home before he was taken to hospital by his housemate.

He sustained a broken nose and cheekbone which will require surgery.

Police have spoken to a number of witnesses but anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

A great rescue gathering Animal Aid has been rescuing, sheltering, and caring for homeless and unwanted animals for 70 years this year.

For us, this has been a year of reflection and celebration.

In the past 70 years we have learned, we have grown and had incredible successes along the way.

Rate refunds on the way

By Casey Neill Yarra Ranges ratepayers can expect a discount on their rate bill following a $600,000 valuation bungle.

Yarra Ranges Council's rating services executive officer John Winzer said the council found out in July that it was on track to collect too much in rates.

It would exceed the State Government's 2.25 per cent rate cap, at 2.79 per cent.

It based its rates on figures the Valuer General Victoria (VGV) provided in time for budget preparations.

"All councils always use the preliminary

data," Mr Winzer said.

But the final valuation provided post-budget was about 0.62 per cent higher.

Mr Winzer said the council had notified the Essential Services Commission, sought legal advice and unsuccessfully sought an explanation from the VGV for the discrepancy.

"There was quite a lot of dialogue back and forth as to how this happened," he said.

He stressed that the valuations on the rate notices were correct.

The council will put forward a revised 2018'19 budget for adoption at its Tuesday 23 October council meeting.

It would go out for public consultation before final approval at the 11 December meeting.

Acting corporate services director Jennifer Bednar said ratepayers would receive notices in January explaining how the change would impact them.

She said the average overpayment was $9 and that 96 per cent of ratepayers had been overcharged less than $20.

"Residents who've paid in full will receive a credit on their next notice or can request a refund," she said.

Ms Bednar said residents who paid in in-

stalments would receive a credit on their next instalment.

"We understand that other councils have been affected," she said.

"We're not on our own."

She said the budget itself would not be affected, and Mayor Len Cox explained.

"We budgeted a certain amount of money.

There was more money coming in than what we budgeted for," he said.

"The council's disappointed that it happened.

"Unfortunately it's an error that was outside of our control."

Training day, all the way

By Derek Schlennstedt Kallista CFA staged one of the largest brigade training exercises at Marybrooke Manor Receptions on Wednesday 17th October from 7.30pm.

The training exercise brought together over ten CFA vehicles and nearly 60 volunteers from Monbulk, Sassafras, Kallista, and the Bayswater Breathing Apparatus Brigade.

The Owner of Marybrooke, Mr Andrew Judkin, opened up Marybrooke for the Brigades allowing unrestricted access during the evening.

"This is another fine opportunity of our local brigades working alongside of each together with great camaraderie, obtaining new skills, and updating old ones," said Kallista Captain Peter Toender.

"The enthusiasm of all involved from Monbulk, Sassafras, Kallista and Bayswater, has been nothing short of magnificent.

A team of nine volunteer members from Kallista, Monbulk, and Sassafras had been working as an organising committee for almost six months to bring this project to fruition.

Owner of Marybrooke Manor, Andrew Judkin said it was comforting to have the CFA train and learn about the properties distinct layout, and was pleased that he could assist in helping them to improve their training.

"If we can help them prepare for the day we hope never comes then that's great for the community and everyone involved," he said.

Foothills Festival kicks off in Upwey The free, family-friend Foothills Festival landed in Upwey on Sunday 21 October.

Upwey's Grassroots Market team wanted to create an event that would celebrate the local community, and sponsorships from the Upwey Community Bank and grants from the Yarra Ranges Council funded it.

"We felt that so much of our community loved coming to the market to connect and enjoy the village of Upwey's Main Street," market co-ordinator Jacqui Buckland said.

"Combine this with the huge (amount of local) musicians, artists, producers, practitioners, sporting, special interest groups, clubs, and the multiple dynamic not-for-profit community groups Upwey is home to, we felt it just had to be celebrated."

The street party-like festival featured roving street performers, skate workshops, art and craft activities, dance troupes and circus acts, buskers and diverse food offerings.

The Foothills Festival also celebrated the anniversaries of the Upwey Community Bank and CFA. "We hope to turn the Foothills Festival into an annual event, incorporating our neighbours in Ferny Creek, Upper Ferntree Gully and Tecoma," Ms Buckland said.

Boost for wine sector The Senate will soon consider a new agreement that would boost wine sector jobs.

The Winemakers' Federation of Australia (WFA) said the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP-11) would have real and immediate benefits for the wine sector.

"At a time when farmers around the country are experiencing crippling drought, deals like TPP-11 give hope for a long-term sustainable future," it said.

The WFA said the agreement passed the House of Representatives on 17 September with support from both major parties.

The WFA supports TPP-11 as a driver of agricultural exports, greater prosperity and wellbeing and jobs in rural and regional Australia.

"Australia will gain a competitive advantage, beyond that obtained through current bilateral agreements, in four markets: Canada, Malaysia, Mexico and Peru," it said.

"Particularly exciting is the opportunity presented in Mexico, which maintains a 20 per cent tariff on Australian wine imports.

"The removal of this tariff will level the playing field for Australia's wine producers, who are currently competing at a disadvantage against wines from Chile and the United States."

The WFA said TPP-11 would drive further growth in Canada, Australia's fourth largest export market.

"It will enable us to capitalise on the increased marketing investment in North America that has come from the Australian government's $50 million Export and Regional Wine Support Package," it said.

The agreement makes a significant effort to address Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs).

"Non-tariff barriers are the biggest problem wine exporters face, adding unnecessary cost and complexity to operating internationally," the WFA said.

"This agreement has a specific technical annex dealing with wine and spirits that will reduce current barriers around compositional issues and labelling and insure against the creation of new barriers in these areas."

That the third bedroom in my home houses my own reptile collection. I have two snakes and 18 lizards.

What should you do if you encounter a snake in the bush?

If you encounter a snake in the bush then there is no excuse to do anything other than look and not touch. Never interfere with a snake in the bush and they won't threaten you, they'll leave you alone. No one should do harm to any wildlife, which is also protected by law. I tell people that the ultimate form of snake bite protection is to leave them alone.

When are you most likely to see a snake?

Snakes are always around; we just don't always see them. They can be active at any time of the year but it's more likely that you will see them during hotter weather, particularly in the early morning basking in the sun. What people might not know is that snakes can overheat, so when it gets really hot they start seeking out cooler places and that's when people are often confronted by them in buildings.

What should you do if you're bitten?

If you're out in the bush, you should be prepared with a first aid kit on hand - that includes a long, broad stretch bandage. It's essential to apply pressure to a snake bite, wrapping it from the bite site to up the limb and to immobilise. Sit still and try to get help to come to you/the victim. Call Triple-O immediately.

It's really interesting how people perceive snakes, particularly those people who fear them without ever even having an encounter. I find children are the most enlightened and usually interested in learning more.

Have you always been drawn to reptiles?

I have been interested in reptiles since my earliest childhood memory. Lizards are my favourite type of reptile, particularly goannas.

How many and what species of snakes do you have at Healesville Sanctuary?

We have 10 different species of snakes at Healesville Sanctuary: two venomous - eastern tiger snake and red-bellied black snake; Australia's largest snake - the Scrub python; and seven species of pythons.

Do you have a favourite scaly friend in your reptile menagerie, or a favourite memory with one?

I treat all our reptiles equally but admit that Chantilly, our Lace Monitor, is my favourite.

He was brought to us by a member of the public in 2004 after being found by the side of the road. We discovered that he has a neurological condition and a diseased eye, which we had to remove last year. His condition meant we had to hand-feed him and handle him, and keep him safe at the Sanctuary rather than release him back into the wild. Sometimes I take Chantilly out into the Nature Play space at the Sanctuary where he will happily wander while being watched. It makes my day to see people come up and ask lots of questions about him.

Chantilly is a great ambassador to break down any human/reptile barriers.

Housing for homeless Yarra Ranges Council will further look into providing affordable housing in Lilydale following community engagement last year.

It will invite housing associations and providers to take part in an expression of interest (EOI) process in the feasibility stage for 67-69 Anderson Street.

At its 9 October meeting, the council decided the proposed density for the site would be reduced from 32 to 12-20 units.

Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox said the housing would most likely be directed to people with disability and older single women at risk of homelessness.

“These are two groups in our community who are at high risk of housing stress and insecure housing locally,” he said.

“We are committed to increasing housing affordability by utilising council-owned land for suitable housing developments and advocating for reforms to state planning policy to include mandatory affordable housing in new large-scale developments.

“After the study, we would develop detailed plans for the site that include a reduced scale of development and address parking requirements.”

Billanook Ward Cr Tim Heenan said there would be further opportunities for people to gain more understanding about the proposal, social housing and potential resident groups, and the housing issues in the Yarra Ranges affecting many community members.

“A number of views were raised by the community in response to the council’s 2017 sur-

vey, including concerns about existing conditions including traffic and parking issues including a dangerous intersection, density of the proposed units and loss of the small pocket park,” he said.

“During the engagement process many residents indicated greater support for housing for people with disability and older single women was needed.”

About 20 per cent of residents who responded to the council last year expressed concerns about the need for more affordable housing.

Cr Heenan said the selection of a housing association or provider did not necessarily mean the council would proceed beyond the feasibility stage.

“After the feasibility stage, the outcome will be subject to a future council decision, statutory process and further community engagement,” he said.

“As a council, we believe it is vital to take the next steps in the process by completing the study.

“We will continue to advocate for affordable, safe and secure housing for all, as one of goals to advance the health and wellbeing of the Yarra Ranges community.”

Blessings for all animals Animals that have passed, animals that are here now, and animals to come - all will be acknowledged at the 10th annual Nalandra Buddhist Institute animal blessing.

On Sunday 28 October, animal lovers and pet owners are invited to bring along their pet for a blessing from Nalandra's spiritual leader His Eminence Zimo'g Rinpoche.

Participation is by donation to Coldstream's Animal Aid to give homeless animals a first-rate second chance.

World Animal Day inspired the event, dedicated to the wellbeing of all animals past, present and future.

Learning and creating

By Derek Schlennstedt The Platypus Education Group Ambassadors teamed up with the Belgrave Men's Shed on Sunday 7 October to make nest boxes for possums, sugar gliders and bats.

The Ambassadors built and painted 24 nest boxes over the course of the day and Platypus Education Group founder, Jen Ellison said it was for the kids to combine hand-on activities with traditional learning.

She said, through the day the 8-12 -year-old Ambassadors were able to learn about the importance of creating habitat for animals.

"The men's shed were great and made the boxes into like an ikea pack, the kids could just hammer into the holes which were predrilled," she said.

It was A lovely way for young kid to work

with older people and to be inspired by their work, I thinkt they learnt a bit t of woodwork, that was really good and I think learnt physically how to help habitat and to create habitat, understanding about logs and the importance of creating habitat and that feeling of accomplishment. .

The Ambassadors meet monthly to learn different ways to protect the environment and inspire others to do the same.

Ms Ellison said that they have already undertaken tree planting, nature photography and litter clean-ups.

Eagle-eyed road users noticed the sign that usually says Strawberry Corner along Belgrave-Gembrook road had been changed to Cowberry Corner on Thursday 18 October.

The humorous name change followed regular reports of cows from the adjacent paddocks walking out onto the road.

Although some raised their concerns about the danger, some light-hearted residents felt it necessary to change the name to reflect the surrounding bovine environment.

Plans to form a Lilydale Township Group are picking up momentum.

Yarra Ranges Councillors Tim Heenan and

Terry Avery will host a meeting to discuss setting up an independent, community-run Lilydale Township Group, at 6pm on Thursday 1 November at Box Hill Institute's Lakeside Campus, Lilydale.

The Lilydale population is predicted to grow from the 17,500 residents to 30,000 by 2040 so the suburb is entering a time of significant change.

"We really do want Lilydale to have a voice," Cr Heenan said.

Holding houses Belgrave Heights sits in second place on a list

of the most tightly held suburbs in Melbourne.

Property research house RiskWise said the suburb was just 3.8 years behind first-placed Huntingdale, with an average hold period of 20.3 years.

RiskWise CEO Doron Peleg said when an area enjoyed such long holding periods it meant the suburb generally provided "something outstanding" for its residents such as a strong community, location and proximity to employment or the CBD, good schools, transport and services.

Belgrave Heights has a median equity of $459,831 with a percentage of 181.5 per cent, partly due to the capital growth of houses over the past three years of 45.6 per cent.

The median house price is $713,274.

Modern take on an Oscar Wilde classic

By Derek Schlennstedt A unique exhibition now showing at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum showcases the hauntingly beautiful collaboration between two-time Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton and acclaimed filmmaker Brendan Fletcher.

Their work traces the compelling interpretation of Oscar Wilde’s 19th century classic The Nightingale and the Rose through a sophisticated and nuanced artistic lens.

Audiences can view the 14-minute animation within the exhibition space, and then make their way through a lush display of objects and artworks that explore the workings behind this production.

Museum program director Patrick Watt spoke to the Mail about the artistic style and elegance of the film and artwork.

"Barton is a fan of Oscar Wilde and she decided to interpret through art one of Oscar Wilde’s short stories which was The Nightingale and the Rose,” he said.

“She started talking to some people about the project, and spoke to a film maker.

“They decided to animate her artwork and brought in other people and created a film based on the story and using her artwork.

“It involved brining in some model makers, and using three dimensional work as well as two dimensional work and stop motion.”

Produced over the course of two years, Barton’s art collection reimagines Wilde’s narrative in her enchanting signature style.

A remarkable take on Wilde’s earnest tale, the final production is an intense but stunningly ethereal and visceral journey.

With a stirring score by Australian singersongwriter Sarah Blasko and voiced by some

of Australia’s most celebrated actors, including Geoffery Rush, Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose is a feat of multidisciplinary, collaborative art practice.

This exhibition will be on display at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum until 3 February.

Harrowing history The Lives Of Others Starring Ulrich Mühe, Sebastian Koch and Martina Gedeck Rated M Stasiland Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2006, The Lives Of Others is a poignant, suspenseful German historical drama, and was screened at the Healesville Memorial Hall on October 16.

Set in 1984 East Germany, the film follows Stasi agent Gerd Wiesler (the late Ulrich Mühe) as he questions his loyalty to the police state while managing the surveillance of playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch).

Mühe delivers a performance of stolid, cautious nobility, and undergoes compelling growth in a tense, slow-burning narrative.

Lauded for its historical authenticity, The Lives of Others illustrates the disturbing reach and inhumane conduct of East Germany's police state, but also generates several moments of grim humour, as the hypocrisy and ego of Wiesler's superiors are laid bare.

Brought back into the field from a teaching position, Wiesler finds himself pushing against his programming in subtle ways.

Struggling within an oppressive regime, Wiesler and Dreyman both generate heavy tension in their respective, intertwining ordeals: Dreyman attempts to secretly publish a subversive article in West Germany, and Wiesler risks his job (and life) to deflect suspicion from Dreyman and his actress girlfriend Christa-Maria Sieland (Martina Gedeck).

The Lives Of Others is a taut, quietly harrowing drama.

The spirit of innovation Three Year 11 students from The Knox School are finalists in the 2018 Australian Conrad Spirit of Innovation Challenge.

Named after Charles "Pete" Conrad Jr., the third man to walk on the moon, the Conrad challenge brings together a dynamic community of innovators and entrepreneurs driving a collaborative movement to develop extraordinary and viable solutions to benefit the world.

Students Bhavesh, Mitchell and Tori have been working all year to be accepted. Participants work to develop solutions to some of the world's most complex problems in one of four categories; aerospace and aviation, cybertechnology and security, energy and environment or health and nutrition.

The Knox School students have been granted a patent for their product which will come under scrutiny by an esteemed panel of judges and innovators in Brisbane at the end of October.

The ultimate winner will travel to the 2019 innovation summit at the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida, where their idea could become a reality.

Valuing learning and life Kallista Kindergarten, a community run kindergarten, has been successful in receiving a significant investment of over $112,000 to improve their playground facilities and provide a kindergarten that is accessible and suitable for all children, no matter their individual needs.

As Kallista Kindergarten Director Lu-Ann Randall explained, the funding comes as part of the Inclusive Kindergartens Facilities and Playgrounds Grant managed through DHHS Victoria and the Victorian Government.

"Receiving this grant means so much to our kindergarten and broader community," LuAnn Randall said.

"We have so many special and wondrous children, some of who need additional support and we are so excited that we are going to be able to provide these facilities. As teachers, we are continually focused on assessing how we can make things better and easier for our children so that they can learn and develop in an environment where they feel nurtured and safe".

The plan that has been developed for the kinder was put together by the teaching staff in consultation with parents and children. It is based on what they have identified as areas that will add value to the learning and development of all children.

The inclusion of a ramp to allow full access, a sensory path, sensory gardens and other additional improvements were all carefully considered and planned out to accommodate every child.

With the kindergarten being run by a volunteer group of parents, the grant submission was a team effort with many hours put into the planning, designing and writing of the submission.

"If it wasn't for the effort of our teaching staff, with their knowledge and experience,

Kallista Kindergarten has been successful in receiving a significant investment of over $112,000 to improve their playground facilities. and that of our parents who assisted in developing a comprehensive vision and plan for our kinder, we wouldn't have been able to make this happen," Kallista Kindergarten Presidents Jes Chalmers said.

Growth and creativity too

By Ron Melles This is my introduction to you as the new principal of Heritage College Melbourne.

I'd like to talk about our small Prep to Grade 6 school, nestled in the Dandenong Ranges.

Our kids are nurtured on Christian principles and forest school model. We focus on three main ideas: growth, creativity and community.

Our seven hectares of bush form part of our classroom. We are out in the environment almost every day. To grow, children must understand how things also grow around them.

We also value creativity. Visual arts and music are woven into many of our programmes. Research has shown that artistic expression is very important for every child's development.

Our children have also become involved through singing socialising and performing with the community in an old peoples' home. Recent studies in Holland showed that open interaction between older people and children has proven benefits for both.

We want to expand this programme into the coming year.

I have taught for some 30 years now in New Zealand, Hong Kong and Latin America. My experience ranges from primary and secondary to tertiary education. I have run an art practice and am very motivated by the creative side of life. This school is the perfect fit for me and I am very focused to present a great school to other children.

I have been extremely impressed by the commitment of the teachers and staff who are working at the college. They take this commitment beyond anything we would

Fernwood takes top honour Fernwood Ferntree Gully has taken out the top honour at the 2018 Fernwood Fitness National Awards and Gala Evening.

The gym was named Club of the Year, beating 69 Fernwood centres around the country.

Club manager Joy Drake was elated with the award and acknowledged the dedication of her staff members.

Joy said her staff have been instrumental to the club's success.

A main criterion for the award was community involvement, which Fernwood Ferntree Gully has no shortage of.

From regular member events such as the Christmas in July lunch to the close-knit supportive community feel of the club, Fernwood Ferntree Gully is more than just a gym for its members.

"One of the best things about joining Fernwood Ferntree Gully, apart from the exercise, is the wonderful friends I have made," Fernwood Ferntree Gully member Ruth said.

"When I first joined last year, I met a few ladies after a class and they all took me on board," Francoise, another member of the club, said.

"Having a coffee and a chat after a workout is just great."

On the gym floor, the supportive club staff motivate and equip their members with the tools to achieve their health and fitness goals.

In June, Fernwood Ferntree Gully member Rachel Dennis was named the 2018 12 Week Challenge Victorian State Finalist after losing 18kg and creating life-long health and fitness habits.

FRANK FROM FLETCHERS OFFERS $500 DONATIONS GAVIN Smith is a well-loved institution of Upwey, and now Melbourne.

For nearly 10 years, every Friday afternoon rain, hail or shine, Gav can be found in Upwey's Main Street dishing out hot soup, pizzas supplied from Upwey Pizza, and other refreshments.

But that's not all.

He always has a kind word and a cheery smile which lifts the spirits of all who pass through Soupees.

Gav then became aware of some primary children going hungry some mornings, so initiated breakfasts one day per week at the Upwey and Upwey South primary schools.

But this wasn't enough, so he launched Upside Pathways learning centre to allow people to learn a craft or subject away from the normal academic stream.

It's free and in a fun, casual environment.

As if he wasn't busy enough, Gavin took it upon himself to support marginalised members of the St Kilda street society.

He provides donated blankets and other comforts while walking the streets and giving a friendly ear.

Although he readily acknowledges the support he receives from many groups and individuals, Gav is a generous person to the point that he'd prefer to run himself short than not provide care.

He now needs a van so that he can more efficiently handle growing donations.

Yarra Ranges Council will consider a report to adopt the revised 2018-19 Budget in principle at a public Council meeting on 23 October 2018 at the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre in Lilydale.

This is in response to a minor error that has occurred in the calculation of this year’s rates, as a result of incorrect valuation data provided by the Valuer General Victoria.

The revised 2018-19 Budget will enable the rate in the dollar to be adjusted down accordingly.

Junior cricket shake-up

By Chris Anderson Although rain curtailed the day's play across the Yarra Valley, plans are in full swing for the upcoming season.

Both junior and senior competitions kicked off last weekend, and there is much more on the October agenda.

Things have been revamped in the senior competitions with the draw of one day cricket prevalent across the grades, particularly the lower ones.

Currently the competition has five senior grades catering for all abilities.

At the top end in DJ Strachan Shield, the Yarra Valley's premier competition, all eyes will be on whether Mount Evelyn and Warburton-Millgrove can continue their dominance in the grade, or whether the gap will be closed by the likes of Yarra Junction, who made huge strides last season.

Meanwhile, in the RA Finger Trophy, defending champions Woori Yallock will be the team to chase down, with the likes of Coldstream, Gruyere and Wandin snapping at their heels.

C-Grade grand finalists Healesville and Mount Evelyn will be looking to prove themselves as they step up a grade into tougher competition.

From there down, one day cricket is the fla-

vour of the month, and with more flexibility afforded to players with work and personal commitments leading into Christmas, this should lead to full and competitive teams and grades.

All senior clubs are looking for new and returning players and with an open grading structure, cricketers are sure to find a team that will suit their ability.

Playing isn't the only avenue to get involved in the game - umpiring is a great way to get involved.

Last weekend saw the introduction of the under-12, 14 and 16 competitions for the new season, while the under-10 action will kick off this Friday night.

Last season was a huge success for all grades as new, innovative programs were adopted.

Our younger grades took on Cricket Australia's junior formats, which came about after extensive research into the junior game and how to improve participation, involvement and ultimately, enjoyment.

These changes were roundly accepted and approved.

The under-16 grade also went through significant changes, including becoming 16 and under to improve playing numbers and playing Friday nights, under lights with pink balls.

Like the senior teams, junior teams are always on the look-out for new players.

Girls' cricket is also gaining momentum across the Yarra Valley, with the competition in conjunction with Mount Evelyn Cricket Club entering two teams in the Star Girls Cricket League Under-15s.

The Junior Blasters program allows participants to learn new skills including catching, throwing and teamwork, make new friends to learn together in a safe and inclusive environment.

Mount Evelyn Cricket Club also offers the Master Blasters program on Wednesday nights.

The Master Blasters program is designed to bridge the gap between the Junior Blasters' skill-focused program and formal cricket by giving every kid a chance to bat, bowl and field in a fast paced, high scoring game of cricket.

Seniors get washed out

By Tom Watson The first week of round three was meant to be the first two-dayer of the season.

However, the day dawned full of rain, causing a league-wide washout to be called.

In junior news, the under-16s and 14s also were washed out, leaving just the Friday night games completed.

The under-13s lost a tight one. Chasing South Belgrave's 2/89 the young Hawks could only muster 5/85.

Stand-out performers were Tim Rickard with 32 not out, Brodie McIntosh 1/22 and Jacob Defina 1/6.

The under-12s notched a win against Knoxfield.

Bowling first, Monbulk did well to restrict

the Knights to 3/69 with Archie Hilton-Stewart (0/1 off three overs) and Jason Abraham (1/8 off three overs) doing the damage with the ball.

Monbulk made 6/80 with Rylan Kay finishing 25 not out to get the win.

The fast 9s had a win against Eildon Park, with plenty of the boys performing well.

With the bat, Tyler Wiliams (17 not out) and Lucas Hickingbotham (11 not out) helped get the young Hawks up to 3/99.

Eildon Park only managed 8/60, with Kit Sutton (2/1) and Ethan Knight (2/0) taking control with the ball.

The super 7s were defeated by Upper Ferntree Gully with good contributions all round.

Monbulk made 96 with Mitchell Holder making 25 and Quinn Kelly 9, with UFTG making 122 with Harry Arnott taking 1/17.

The juniors played on Friday night.

It's never too wet to run for these dedicated athletes

By Jamie Strudley The heavens opened on Saturday 20 October but it didn't stop the athletes from Yarra Ranges Athletics from gathering at Morrison Reserve for round three of summer track and field.

A modified program of events enabled a mix of ages and genders to have a unique and fun morning of competition.

Sprint events were first up for the youngest age groups, completing both 100m and 70m events in quick succession.

While the track was wet, the lack of wind allowed some excellent races to be run.

A big group gathered for long jump and the Yarra Ranges coaches didn't miss the chance to include some skills development drills, a great distraction from the rain.

Not content with those events, many athletes elected to run in either the 800m, or joined a team mate to run the Parlauf Relay.

The club committee and athletes are incredibly grateful to the volunteers and parent helpers who rose to the challenge of organising a wet weather day to not only allow competition to continue, but to provide fantastic fun and great memories for all involved.

The club's seniors travelled to Casey Fields and Williamstown tracks for the alternate AV Shield competitions.

Some excellent results in from all athletes helped to secure team wins to the Open Men and Under-18 men's teams.

During the week, several club athletes represented their schools at the Eastern Metro Region Track and Field Championships.

The stand-out performances came from Amy Pearce winning the 12 to 13-year girls'

high jump with a new personal best, Tiara Willis winning the 11-year girls' 80m hurdles in 13.41 seconds, and Zoe Clarke, claiming the bronze medal in the 9 to 10-year girls' 1500m, also with a personal best time of 5 minutes 49 seconds.

The covers would provide all-weather netball so players can avoid heat stroke in summer and can still play when it's raining or hailing.

Last week, the Mail reported that a reelected Labor State Government would deliver $10.5 million towards redeveloping Pinks Reserve.

The upgrade would cover up to six outdoor netball courts, and improve the badminton, table tennis and softball facilities.

It would also expand the Gary Tait Pavilion, resurface the Roy Baldwin Oval and add a competition grade court alongside other improvements within the Kilsyth Sports Centre.

Other works across the precinct would include new lighting, fencing, paths and seating.

The commitment built on existing investments in Pinks Reserve including nearly $50,000 for new cricket nets and $50,000 to begin the sites master plan.

Liberal Candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, said Pinks Reserve was the heart of the netball community in the outer east and the Yarra Valley.

She said it had experienced significant growth in junior and senior female participation.

Ms Vallence announced the funding pledge on Saturday 20 October, ahead of the 24 November State Election with Monbulk candidate John Schurink and Croydon MP David Hodgett.

"I am a strong supporter and advocate of our local sports clubs and the many benefits they provide our community," Mr Hodgett said.

"This funding is a huge win for local netball players with an all-weather venue that will attract and expand the competition across Victoria."

The association is the largest in the Outer East, with more than 2500 registered members

and 250 teams from 23 suburban and country clubs.

Members come from across the Yarra Ranges including Chirnside Park, Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Kilsyth, Montrose, Mount Evelyn, Seville, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Launching Place, War-

burton, Coldstream, Healesville, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, Toolangi, Wonga Park, Croydon Hills, Croydon, Warranwood, Ringwood, Heathmont, Bayswater, Boronia, and The Basin.

All competition games are played at Pinks Reserve in Kilsyth.

Looking out for lyrebirds

By Derek Schlennstedt Every winter volunteers of the Sherbrooke Lyrebird Survey Group (SLSG) gather before dawn in Sherbrooke Forest to listen for male Lyrebird calls.

The group have been doing this for 60 years, and are devoted to recording and protecting the superb lyrebird.

The group was set up in 1958 to protect the birds from forest clearing and the introduction of pine plantations.

Today they are still acting with the desire to guard these unique birds, and celebrated its 60th anniversary on Saturday 16 October.

Ms Jan Incoll said that over the 60 years the group has built up an important data base, monitoring the bird numbers, learning about the bird's ecology and understanding the challenges the birds face in a peri-urban environment.

"Although our permit is for the whole of the Dandenong Ranges SLSG mainly focus on Sherbrooke and the corridors," Ms Incoll said.

"We have a dawn survey three times a year where volunteers count the males lyrebirds heard in Sherbrooke forest."

"The outlook is very good, in 2017 we heard 68 full tailed males at our Dawn Survey compared with 25 birds heard in 2000.

"It's wonderful success story."

Ms Incoll said that Parks Victoria management have greatly assisted in controlling feral cat numbers, foxes and introduced deer.

She said members of Friends of Sherbrooke have worked tirelessly to improve the lyrebird's habitat, but the increased traffic around the Dandenong's now poses a great threat to the lyrebirds.

The group celebrated their 60th anniversary at Kallista Mechanics Hall where previous members were invited to reminisce over old photos and historical memorabilia.

A local Kallista lady Linda Burgstahler kindly displayed her amazing collection of lyrebird memorabilia and John Lloyd shared many of his memories of the years when he was a Ranger in Sherbrooke.

Joe Kenyon, one of the sons of a foundation member, spoke of his father's love of the lyrebirds and SLSG. It is believed that SLSG is one of the longest continuous serving friends groups in Victoria and over this period has only had four secetaries.

"The event was very successful - around 80 people turned up," Ms Incoll said.

"Past members, current members and groups that had helped us in some way, people who'd come to dawn surveys, and local people who were just interested in lyrebirds."

"Everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves and there were many who were thrilled to know that we are still out there doing it."

Yarra Ranges Mayor Len Cox hosted a free day of entertainment at the Montrose Town Centre.

The Len's Backyard Open Day on Saturday 20 October featured fun activities for children, com-

munity and information stalls, and live music.

The Dandenong Ranges Music Council (DRMC) and Ruccis Circus provided entertainment and Eastern Regional Libraries hosted a story time.

Life-saving spend makes in-roads into the road toll experience score recorded.

"It is extremely pleasing to see the TAC's strong investments in both prevention and rehabilitation making a real difference to the Victorian community," TAC chair Penny Armytage said.

In 2017-'18 the TAC recorded an operating loss of $447 million due to external economic factors, record investments in infrastructure, higher weekend payments for attendant care workers.

But independent actuaries PwC assured the TAC's ongoing financial sustainability was sound.

Highlights from the annual report included $1.49 billion paid to 51,000 clients to help get their lives back on track; 10,025 clients registered in the first year of myTAC and 40,000 receipts processed; 30 independent living units completed or under construction for the most seriously injured clients as part of a $40 million investment; 3596 health care providers signed up to LanternPay within its first year; and 82 per cent staff engagement - above global standards.

The Transport Accident Commission's annual report showed record results in preventing road trauma and supporting people injured on Victorian roads.

The report showed $283 million was spent on life-saving road safety infrastructure in 2017-'18.

The number of lives lost on Victoria's roads reached its lowest recorded six-month total in the first half of this year, at 102.
