The rocks were brought in from the Mansfield Quarry and David Borton was able to trace them back to the area where fossils of this type have been discovered previously.

"I contacted Jim Childs from the Yarra Ranges council who helped me confirm the rocks were from Mansfield. I contacted the quarry who confirmed that they did supply the rocks and that is how we know the history of these fossils."

"This is a great find and we are all really excited about sharing it with our community and anyone else who is interested in visiting Warburton on their own voyage of discovery," David said.

Three hundred and fifty million years ago, two little fishes were swimming happily in the area where Mansfield quarry now sits.

Those same fish have now moved to Warburton and are fossilised in rocks used to create the wharf precinct.

It is believed the fossils were first seen by Dr. Peter Sorensen Ward whilst listening to the sounds from the River Folk Festival.

Dr. Ward, now living in Finland but whose parents live in Big Pats Creek, alerted friend David Borton, a retired geologist from Warburton.

"I've known about it for nearly a year now and apart from showing it to Ivor and a few others, I would say, as a general rule, almost nobody knows they exist," said David Borton.

Ivor Wolstencroft, local retired vet, says that although the fossils are rare, it's important that people get to know about them.

"Locals get really excited when they hear about this," he said.

"You almost need a personal guide to find them," he said.

"I went up and down the wharf and couldn't find any sign of them."

"It will be really nice for people to come up here and find them by themselves, a bit like fossicking for gold."

The rocks comprise river and lake mudstones, siltstones and sandstones of the Lower Carboniferous Mansfield Group.

There are obvious ripple marks and mud cracks on many of the rocks but the fossils are not as easy to spot.

"I spoke to Peter and we are both comfortable to tell the world about this find. There are ripple marks, mud cracks that are easy to spot but then there are the fossils," Mr. Borton said.

"People will have the joy of coming down here and looking for and maybe discovering the fossils for themselves. That makes it an adventure, rather than just going to a sign-posted

Blessings for animals Animals that have passed, animals that are here now, and animals to come - all will be acknowledged at the 10th annual Nalandra Buddhist Institute animal blessing.

On Sunday 28 October, animal lovers and pet owners are invited to bring along their pet for a blessing from Nalandra's spiritual leader His Eminence Zimo'g Rinpoche.

Participation is by donation to Coldstream's Animal Aid to give homeless animals a first-rate second chance.

The event will take place at Lillydale Lake, near the community hall, at 10.30am.

Tibetan prayer flags will be visible on the right.

A vegetarian picnic lunch will follow the ceremony.

World Animal Day inspired the event, dedicated to the wellbeing of all animals past, present and future.

All are welcome to bring a pet - children can even bring their favourite animal toy - or photographs of deceased pets for blessing.

All receive blessing cords, blessed water and food.

Animal Aid volunteers will attend the blessing with dogs that are available for adoption.

Rate rebates plan

By Casey Neill Yarra Ranges ratepayers can expect a discount on their rate bill following a $600,000 valuation bungle.

Yarra Ranges Council's rating services executive officer John Winzer said the council found out in July that it was on track to collect too much in rates.

It would exceed the State Government's 2.25 per cent rate cap, at 2.79 per cent. It based its rates on figures the Valuer General Victoria (VGV) provided in time for budget preparations.

"All councils always use the preliminary data," Mr Winzer said.

But the final valuation provided post-budget was about 0.62 per cent higher.

Mr Winzer said the council had notified the

Essential Services Commission, sought legal advice and unsuccessfully sought an explanation from the VGV for the discrepancy.

"There was quite a lot of dialogue back and forth as to how this happened," he said.

He stressed that the valuations on the rate notices were correct.

The council will put forward a revised 2018'19 budget for adoption at its Tuesday 23 October council meeting.

It would go out for public consultation before final approval at the 11 December meeting.

Acting corporate services director Jennifer Bednar said ratepayers would receive notices in January explaining how the change would impact them.

She said the average overpayment was $9 and that 96 per cent of ratepayers had been

overcharged less than $20.

"Residents who've paid in full will receive a credit on their next notice or can request a refund," she said.

Ms Bednar said residents who paid in instalments would receive a credit on their next instalment.

"We understand that other councils have been affected," she said.

"We're not on our own."

She said the budget itself would not be affected, and Mayor Len Cox explained.

"We budgeted a certain amount of money.

There was more money coming in than what we budgeted for," he said.

"The council's disappointed that it happened.

"Unfortunately it's an error that was outside of our control."

Growing our new avenue of honour Six Illawarra flame trees have been planted at Millgrove to form a new Avenue of Honour to commemorate the efforts of local soldiers who served in World War One. The trees, which are positioned next to the neighbourhood safer place and community fire refuge are a low fire threat and have been approved by CFA, Emergency Management Victoria and CSIRO. President of the Millgrove Residents Action Group, Bob Lillie, said the majority of the 25 trees in the original Millgrove Avenue of Honour, which were planted 100 years ago, were no longer standing.

"Some of the trees that are still there are getting towards the end of their life cycle or are in poor condition," Mr Lillie said.

"The southern mahogany gum and sugar gums originally had plaques and pickets around them but in 1934 they were washed away in a flood."

On 5 July 1918, Mrs M.A. Platt requested permission from Upper Yarra Shire Council to plant trees along the side of the road from the Methodist Church to Yardley's Corner at Millgrove.

In March 1919, the community held a welcome home event at the Millgrove Railway Station for some of Millgrove's returned soldiers.

Mooroolbark assault

Millgrove Residents Action Group President Bob Lillie, Council Bushland Management Officer Ben O'Leary, Cr Jim Child and action group member Maureen Halit Cr Jim Child said it was important the families of the soldiers and community could visit the Avenue of Honour well into the future.

"I am proud to say that Millgrove residents will have a community space to remember those who gave up their lives between 1914 1918," Cr Child said.

"The new Avenue of Honour will complement the Anzac Day services held here which hundreds of people attend."

Yarra Ranges Highway patrol are reminding drivers to check the condition of their vehicle.

On Saturday 20 October a 29-year-old male driver was detected speeding at 98 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on Swansea Rd, Lilydale.

The man's vehicle was inspected and found to have severely worn tyres in addition to other issues.

The vehicle was grounded immediately and the driver issued with a defect notice.

The man also received a $322 penalty notice for speeding and incurred four demerit points.

A further $403 penalty notice was issued in relation to the defective tyres.

The worn tyres on the vehicle will have to be replaced before it can be driven and, once the defective items are attended to, presented to VicRoads to clear the notice.

Highway Patrol said that tyres in such poor condition present a serious risk to both the driver and other road users, especially considering that the driver was travelling almost 20 km/h over the speed limit.

The group advocated to Council to plant the trees and fund the plaques, by starting a petition with the Warburton RSL which gained more than 65 signatures.

Signage and plaques will be installed in the coming weeks, explaining the names of people who served with corflute signs that light up at night.

Mr Lillie said MRAG was grateful for the support given from the Warburton RSL, President Lindsay Fisher and Yarra Ranges Council.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an assault in Mooroolbark on 14 October. .

Police believe a 26-year-old Mulgrave man stepped out of his car on Sheridan Avenue and was knocked unconscious by a group of males about 10.30pm on 14 October.

A friend, who was with the victim at the time rendered assistance.

The victim had earlier been at a festival in St Kilda with friends.

He and another male friend gave two girls who were also at the festival a lift back to their Mooroolbark address.

As they arrived at the address, the victim stepped out of the car and was attacked by 4-5 unknown males.

It is believed the males may have been in a silver Toyota Hilux ute.

The victim's friend drove him home before he was taken to hospital by his housemate.

He sustained a broken nose and cheekbone which will require surgery.

Police have spoken to a number of witnesses but anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Warby water precinct ready for 2019 - design is done

By Michael Doran The proposed Warburton Community Precinct is moving towards reality with design work completed and tendering ready to start.

In August the council approved the planning permit and Cr Jim Child said calling for tenders was another significant step completed.

Yarra Ranges council has committed $2.8 million to Stage 1 of the project and expects construction will commence in 2019.

"The Warburton community has been the

driving force behind this project," Cr. Child said.

"The Warburton Sports Centre Committee and Warburton Advancement League played a strong role in contributing to the community consultation process and working with council to ensure the community's needs were met when it came to providing a regional water play attraction and playspace."

Animal medics get some help

By Michael Doran Looking after injured wildlife has been given a boost of $170,000 by the Victorian State Government.

Minister for the Environment, Lily D'Ambrosio announced Help for Injured Wildlife, a new tool that connects Victorians with volunteers and professionals who can assist animals when they are in trouble.

"This tool will make it quicker and easier for injured animals to get the help they need, anywhere in Victoria," Ms. Ambrosio said.

The tool, which is smartphone compatible, helps anyone who comes across an injured animal connect with wildlife rehabilitators, rescue organisations and vets in local areas.

It also provides advice to first responders according to the type of animal and the injury it appears to have sustained.

Victoria has a network of authorised and dedicated volunteers who provide an essential service helping wildlife found in distress or pain.

"Our Wildlife Rehabilitators Grants are supporting the volunteers who house, feed and care for our wildlife when they need it most," said Ms. Ambrosio.

The funding will help 102 rehabilitators with the costs associated with caring for injured animals, such as the training and equipment they need.

Among the recipients are Nell Pedzik and Emma Cash of Mount Evelyn, Tania Theuma of Don Valley and Nicola Rae and Raewyn Jeganathan of Launching Place.

The Wildlife Rehabilitator Grants program is celebrating its 10th anniversary and has provided over $1.5 million to wildlife carers since 2008.

When Bailey Goodwin was born at 26 weeks he weighed 702 grams and within two days needed major bowel surgery. He then spent the next 150 days in the neonatal intensive care unit at Monash Childrens Hospital.

On Sunday 28 October, the Seville schoolboy, will stride out as a thriving 7 year old to walk five kilometres around Albert Park Lake in the annual Walk for Prems.

"We were pretty lucky that our little boy got through this and the support we received got us through, even if took time for us to reach out and accept help," said mum, Jade.

"After having Bailey it was like life was on autopilot. It was like watching a movie; it was surreal and not like it was happening to us."

"When he was three months old and still in hospital I saw a poster for the Walk for Prems so we entered. It was so good to meet families who had experienced what we were going through."

"We could see that there was a future where Bailey would be healthy and happy and that gave us so much hope. Now I can give that feeling to someone else and I want to do that."

Bailey has seven siblings, so with parents Jade and Aaron, Team Goodwin has ten entrants in the walk. Jade said it is a really happy and fun atmosphere and that the kids really look forward to it.

"We get to catch up with other people who went through this with us and supported us.

Even though we stay in touch on social media to see them in person is so uplifting," she said.

Walk for Prems is a fundraising effort by charity, Life's Little Treasures Foundation and is in its ninth year.

This year's target is to raise $300,000 from 12 locations around Australia, to add to the $1.4 million raised since 2010. Details and registration are at www.walkforprems.org.au

LETTERS Bushfire safety a must I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the Healesville community bushfire group on the recent Living with Fire forum which I was very pleased to attend.

The Memo was almost packed and you could have heard a pin drop as attendees listened intently to the speakers and thought deeply about their own bushfire safety as we prepare for the season ahead.

It was an absolute coup to have one of Australia's leading bushfire experts Justin Leonard from the CSIRO and University of Melbourne address the forum.

Addressing areas such as storage of materials, gaps, fences and decks and build-up of debris provided an easy understanding of where risks lie around the home and how to mitigate them.

To everyone in our community, please stay safe this fire season.

Just give a thought that you're closing down industries that produce the most environmentallyfriendly building material there is - an industry who has never been found guilty of bring about the extinction of any animal species.

Just remember when you walk into your home and feel the warmth of your wood heater, and the timber used in the construction of your home.

Just remember the corrupt governments overseas whom have no concern for the environment and export to us over $4 billion of timber each year, and in doing so are desecrating vast areas of rain forest.

How proud I would be if Australian green groups were to travel to these Asian countries and publicly protest - I would be quite happy to make a donation towards their travel costs.

However - if I were a greenie I would not celebrate too enthusiastically as there is no guarantee the government is going to declare the Black Range and Blue Range a National Park.

Horse riders, dog walkers, hunters - take note - so the tourists coming to the bush are going to create a national bonanza for the area, as a person who has been horse riding in the bush for more than 60 years, I can assure readers I have never come across a traffic jam!

Time for township Plans to form a Lilydale Township Group are picking up momentum.

Yarra Ranges Councillors Tim Heenan and Terry Avery will host a meeting to discuss setting up an independent, community-run Lilydale Township Group, at 6pm on Thursday 1 November at Box Hill Institute’s Lakeside Campus, Lilydale.

The Lilydale population is predicted to grow from the 17,500 residents to 30,000 by 2040 so the suburb is entering a time of significant change.

Emergency just a must

I did birthing classes at Healesville Hospital which were great, but gave birth at the Angliss.

I'm so glad I gave birth at the Angliss because I needed an emergency caesarean and if I had have been at Healesville my daughter would have died.

I am all for maternity services at Healesville Hospital but there must be fully-staffed 24/7 access to emergency facilities in the event an emergency caesarean is required.

The following morning I had my first baby at 9am on 23 September 2012.

I was lucky enough to be back at Healesville Hospital by 5pm that night where I recovered and had family and friends visit, and it made it easier for my partner to come and go.

The staff at Healesville were great. I wish I could have delivered there at the time.

One week later they closed maternity, so I consider myself lucky and grateful for those two days there.

Fast forward to 2016 having bub number two.

I got to hospital about 2.45pm after the awful car drive down in unbearable pain and the

nurses didn’t think I was even in late stages of labour as they thought I was too composed.

They made comments of ‘do you have anywhere close by you could stay?’ rather than going back to Healesville.

I said no and I probably indicated like last time around I wasn’t leaving.

My son was born at 5pm on the dot.

At least at Healesville it wouldn’t be an issue to be sent home.

Given the location I struggle to want a third child as I don’t think I could bear the long drive again.

This is a much-needed service.

Back in 1984 I hadn't planned to have mine at Healesville Hospital but I'm so glad I did, and consequently my next two children were born there.

It was quick and premature...luckily they'd just got the new incubator otherwise he would have had to go to Melbourne, and he was first to use the new digital scales.

Well-known Cathy Watson was midwife extraordinaire each time.

We now live on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland and my daughter has three children.

It was a nervous drive for the first two to a hospital 30 minutes away.

Luckily number was born at the new SC University Hospital only a short drive away.

Although Healesville Hospital still did birthing in 2012, they didn’t take first-time mums so I was booked in for Box Hill.

The most daunting part was the 50 minutes to one-hour drive.

You get stuck at every set of lights while being in pain with contractions, watching the clock waiting for the next contraction, and counting down the minutes until you get there.

With my first pregnancy, we arrived at hospital in the early hours of Saturday morning and they sent me home as it slowed down.

I got all the way back home and it felt unbearable again so I went all the way back to Box Hill and, of course, by the time I got there it slowed down again so they were going to send me home.

But there was no chance I was leaving.

I was happy for my partner to go but I was adamant that I would stay on the premises even if it meant I was only sitting in the waiting room.

I sure as hell was not going up risk the dreaded drive again.

Luckily a few hours went by and they were so busy that they left us alone in a disused old part of the maternity ward.

They came back and were talking about me possibly going.

I was having some contractions so she ordered to see how far dilated I was. If I was not far along then I would have had no choice but to go home.

Thank my lucky stars I was.

The tenth, and final Timberworker's Memorial Service, was held on 20 October at Heritage Pioneers Chapel in Woori Yallock.

It was a bittersweet day, full of reminisces about the Yarra Valley timber industry, the characters, the dangers and lost loved ones.

Ten years ago, Bette Phillips, from Uniting GreifWork, became aware of a spate of workplace deaths in the region's timber industry.

She got together with Woori Yallock's Robbie Heritage and out of that the Timberworker's Memorial Service was born.

The memorial is about supporting loved ones and families of those killed in the industry and honouring those recently passed.

Two remembered were Des Morrish at age 98 and described as 'one of our great timber people and story tellers." Kevin Ford, a tree cutter and later a grave digger at Wesburn Cemetery for 40 years was also honoured.

A highlight of the day was 97 year young Len Howell, who spoke about the saw mills spread throughout the Yarra Valley. His recall of detail was amazing, even down to how much he paid for his first powered saw.

Robbie Heritage spoke about the Reid Brothers and the family milling business that has been in operation for 100 years, the last 78 in Yarra Junction.

Bette Philips said she was very sad this was the last memorial service and how workplace deaths devastate families.

"We have added 20 new families to our program this year, 20 families where a loved one went to work but didn't come home."

Robbie Heritage spent his early working career in and out of the timber industry and has an obvious love of it, the people and what it has done for the Yarra Valley.

His efforts in keeping these memorial services going for a decade will be sadly missed by all the families who attended.

Keith Thomas remembered It's difficult to convey the sadness when an enduring member of the Upper Yarra community passes, and in such a small and tight community each passing is recognised.

That loss has certainly been felt in the Warburton community with the sad loss of father, Justice of Peace and much-loved local Keith Thomas, who on 16 October passed away peacefully at age 93.

Mr Thomas was well known in Warburton and of the 93 years he lived in the area, 55 of those were dedicated to being a Justice of the Peace.

Appointed to the role in April 1961 he was only 36-years-old when he took on the mantle - the minimum age required to apply.

"The police needed a Justice of the Peace, and they asked me, so I made an application," he told the Mail in 2016.

"At the time I was only 34 so I had to wait as the minimum age was 35, but when I turned 35 I applied for it and on 28 April 1961 I was appointed as a Justice of the Peace."

Right until the end he was practicing as a Justice of Peace and during his time pin the role saw it change dramatically, In his earlier years his jobs would include signing police warrants, but later in life his main duties involved witnessing documents and certifying copies.

As one of the few Justices of Peace in Warburton he was well known by all and while he no longer lived in the area towards the end of his life he made regular trips to his home there.

O'Shannassy Ward Councillor, Jim Child described him as an absolute gentleman and even a mentor.

Beloved local Keith Thomas passed away peacefully on 16 October at age 93.

"He was just part of the community and was always in strong support of the upper Yarra community," Mr Child said.

When interviewed in 2016 about his life in Warburton Mr Thomas said he had been very lucky to be so heavily involved in the fantastic community there.

"I've been very lucky to live in Warburton, it has given us a good living and I've tried to give that back to the people who live there," he told the Mail in 2016.

A service for Keith Thomas will be held at the Heritage Pioneers Chapel, 1416 Healesville-Kooweerup Road, and Woori Yallock on Wednesday 24 October at 11am. mailcommunity.com.au

The Big Bouquet is perhaps best known for growing beautiful gerberas and its herd of alpacas strutting around the Healesville property.

The homemade pies in the Cafe may soon become the main attraction after winning silver and bronze awards in this year's Great Australian Pie Competition.

"We all thought our pies were pretty good but these awards show the professionals agree," Natalie Kerst, the pie's creator said.

"I'm pretty proud that we did so well in a national competition with hundreds of entries.

Natalie and husband Sander have owned the Big Bouquet Farm for around four years now. Together they run the farm, including the flowers, alpacas, gift shop and the cafe.

"We wanted to enter the competition for the last three years but we have just been too busy to get an entry in on time. This year we got in by the skin of our teeth," she said.

"We put in our two most popular pies, butter chicken and smoky beef and we entered exactly the same pies as we sell in the cafe. We were blown away when the smoky beef won silver and the butter chicken bronze."

"They are both made from my secret recipes and all our fillings are slow cooked, lots of flavour and we think we've nailed it."

"My grandad was a pastry chef and mum was a fabulous cook so I got my passion from there. I love to cook with my six year old son Mika, with his sister Anya, two, watching on.

"We get lots of international tourists come through and often they want to eat something aussie, so a pie is the obvious choice."

"I think tourism is definitely going to expand when the Yarra Valley railway goes ahead, it should give Puffing Billy a run for its money. Anything that grows tourism in the valley helps us all."

The Great Aussie Pie Competition attracted 1600 entries that were judged over four 4 days in September at Fine Food Australia Exhibition in Melbourne.

The Senate will soon consider a new agreement that would boost wine sector jobs.

The Winemakers' Federation of Australia (WFA) said the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP-11) would have real and immediate benefits for the wine sector.

"At a time when farmers around the country are experiencing crippling drought, deals like TPP-11 give hope for a long-term sustainable future," it said.

The WFA said the agreement passed the House of Representatives on 17 September with support from both major parties.

The WFA supports TPP-11 as a driver of agricultural exports, greater prosperity and wellbeing and jobs in rural and regional Australia.

"Australia will gain a competitive advantage, beyond that obtained through current bilateral agreements, in four markets: Canada, Malaysia, Mexico and Peru," it said.

"Particularly exciting is the opportunity presented in Mexico, which maintains a 20 per cent tariff on Australian wine imports.

"The removal of this tariff will level the playing field for Australia's wine producers, who are currently competing at a disadvantage against wines from Chile and the United States."

The WFA said TPP-11 would drive further growth in Canada, Australia's fourth largest export market.

"It will enable us to capitalise on the increased marketing investment in North America that has come from the Australian government's $50 million Export and Regional Wine Support Package," it said.

The agreement makes a significant effort to address Non-Tariff Barriers (NTBs).

"Non-tariff barriers are the biggest problem wine exporters face, adding unnecessary cost and complexity to operating internationally," the WFA said.

One for the individuals 2018 has been an eventful year for Hoddles Creek Primary School (HCPS).

The school is often a part of many different fundraisers and this year has seen students fundraise for the Heart Foundation, Epilepsy Foundation, Jeans for Genes Day, World's Greatest Shave and Red Nose Day. "Our students also supported Harmony Day, Pay it Forward Day and marched in the ANZAC Parade," Hoddles Creek Primary School Principal Leanne Woolley said.

Kids cooking up a storm Cire Community School believes that all young people should have the opportunity to positively engage in education regardless of their life circumstances and any barriers to learning.

Modern take on an Oscar Wilde classic

By Derek Schlennstedt A unique exhibition now showing at Yarra Ranges Regional Museum showcases the hauntingly beautiful collaboration between two-time Archibald Prize winner Del Kathryn Barton and acclaimed filmmaker Brendan Fletcher.

Their work traces the compelling interpretation of Oscar Wilde’s 19th century classic The Nightingale and the Rose through a sophisticated and nuanced artistic lens.

Audiences can view the 14-minute animation within the exhibition space, and then make their way through a lush display of objects and artworks that explore the workings behind this production.

Museum program director Patrick Watt spoke to the Mail about the artistic style and elegance of the film and artwork.

"Barton is a fan of Oscar Wilde and she decided to interpret through art one of Oscar Wilde’s short stories which was The Nightingale and the Rose,” he said.

“She started talking to some people about the project, and spoke to a film maker.

“They decided to animate her artwork and brought in other people and created a film based on the story and using her artwork.

“It involved brining in some model makers, and using three dimensional work as well as two dimensional work and stop motion.”

Over the next three years, Barton would meet with film maker Brendan Fletcher and work with award-winning post-production house Method Studios to create their 14-minute animation.

A remarkable take on Wilde’s earnest tale, the final production is an intense but stunningly ethereal and visceral journey.

With a stirring score by Australian singersongwriter Sarah Blasko and voiced by some of Australia’s most celebrated actors, including Geoffery Rush, Oscar Wilde’s The Nightingale and the Rose is a feat of multidisciplinary, collaborative art practice.

This exhibition will be on display at the Yarra Ranges Regional Museum until 3 February.

Ferry flies to the valley British musical icon Bryan Ferry is heading for the valley in February.

He'll play A Day on the Green at Rochford Wines on Saturday 23 February.

Ferry released his first record in 1972 with band Roxy Music, leading proponents of the more experimental element of glam rock, as well as having a significant influence on early English punk and new wave music.

His set list will draw on his whole career, including Roxy Music tunes Love Is The Drug, Avalon, More Than This, Virginia Plain and Jealous Guy, and solo hits like Let's Stick Together, Slave To Love and Don't Stop The Dance.

Joining Ferry will be a reunion 30 years in the making, the 1980s Melbourne funk/pop band I'm

Talking.

It features original members Robert Goodge, Barbara Hogarth, Stephen Charlesworth and singers Kate Ceberano and Zan Abeyratne.

"I'm very excited about performing with I'm Talking again after so many years," Cebrano said.

"The music still sounds so great - fans are gonna love it!"

Rounding out the bill will be Died Pretty and Models.

This summer marks the 18th season of A Day on the Green, which started in January 2001.

The Rotary Club of Wandin is holding a fundraising event to help children in need.

Comedy Hypnotist Gerard V will perform at the two-course dinner at St Patrick's Community Centre in Jones Street, Lilydale, from 6.30pm on Friday 16 November.

There'll also be a silent auction, and guests can BYO drinks and will receive sparkling wine on arrival.

All money raised will go to ROMAC, which stands for Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children.

ROMAC brings children who are critically ill, injured or suffering from severe birth defects to leading hospitals in Australia or New Zealand for complex surgery not available in their island homeland.

Wandin Rotarian Gavan McIntyre and his wife Di are heavily involved with the project, and currently hosting a three-year-old boy from Timor Leste, Gaspar, and his mum Estefania.

During minor surgery in Dili, doctors discovered a tumour in Gaspar's lower abdomen.

"After having chemo in Dili, he was referred to ROMAC who organised for him to come to Melbourne for his operation to remove the tumour," Mr McIntyre said.

"This surgery is not available in Timor Leste.

"His operation took three hours and was carried out at the Royal Children's Hospital.

"Gaspar spent a week in hospital recovering from the operation.

"If all goes well, he should be going back home to Timor Leste in about a week's time - a happy and healthy little boy."

Mr McIntyre said ROMAC was run totally by volunteers and all of the hospital expenses were covered by ROMAC. "That's why our fundraisers are so important to keep this program going," he said.

Tickets are $60 per head and tables are of eight or 10. The dress code is dress to impress.

The Lives Of Others Starring Ulrich Mühe, Sebastian Koch and Martina Gedeck Rated M Stasiland Winner of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2006, The Lives Of Others is a poignant, suspenseful German historical drama, and was screened at the Healesville Memorial Hall on October 16.

Set in 1984 East Germany, the film follows Stasi agent Gerd Wiesler (the late Ulrich Mühe) as he questions his loyalty to the police state while managing the surveillance of playwright Georg Dreyman (Sebastian Koch).

Mühe delivers a performance of stolid, cautious nobility, and undergoes compelling growth in a tense, slow-burning narrative.

Lauded for its historical authenticity, The Lives of Others illustrates the disturbing reach and inhumane conduct of East Germany's police state, but also generates several moments of grim humour, as the hypocrisy and ego of Wi-

esler's superiors are laid bare.

Brought back into the field from a teaching position, Wiesler finds himself pushing against his programming in subtle ways. Struggling within an oppressive regime, Wiesler and Dreyman both generate heavy tension in their respective, intertwining ordeals: Dreyman attempts to secretly publish a subversive article in West Germany, and Wiesler risks his job (and life) to deflect suspicion from Dreyman and his actress girlfriend ChristaMaria Sieland (Martina Gedeck).

The Lives Of Others is a taut, quietly harrowing drama.

Yarra Ranges Council will consider a report to adopt the revised 2018-19 Budget in principle at a public Council meeting on 23 October 2018 at the Council Chambers at the Civic Centre in Lilydale.

This is in response to a minor error that has occurred in the calculation of this year’s rates, as a result of incorrect valuation data provided by the Valuer General Victoria.

The revised 2018-19 Budget will enable the rate in the dollar to be adjusted down accordingly.

Following the proposed adoption in principle, Council welcomes your views on the changes proposed to the Budget. The changes relate to the rate in the dollar and associated information. Apart from these changes the revised 2018-19 Budget contains the same information as the Budget adopted in June 2018 which itself was the subject of previous community consultation.

More cash pledged for Pinks netball A Liberal Nationals Government would provide $1 million to cover up to six netball courts at Pinks Reserve Regional Netball Facility.

The Lillydale and Yarra Valley Netball Association has already raised $1 million for the Kilsyth project, and received $200,000 through the Pick My Project funding program.

The covers would provide all-weather netball so players can avoid heat stroke in summer and can still play when it's raining or hailing.

Last week, the Mail reported that a reelected Labor State Government would deliver $10.5 million towards redeveloping Pinks Reserve.

The upgrade would cover up to six outdoor netball courts, and improve the badminton, table tennis and softball facilities.

It would also expand the Gary Tait Pavilion, resurface the Roy Baldwin Oval and add a competition grade court alongside other improvements within the Kilsyth Sports Centre.

Other works across the precinct would include new lighting, fencing, paths and seating.

The commitment built on existing investments in Pinks Reserve including nearly $50,000 for new cricket nets and $50,000 to begin the sites master plan.

Liberal Candidate for Evelyn, Bridget Vallence, said Pinks Reserve was the heart of the netball community in the outer east and the Yarra Valley.

She said it had experienced significant growth in junior and senior female participation.

Ms Vallence announced the funding pledge on Saturday 20 October, ahead of the 24 November State Election with Monbulk candidate John Schurink and Croydon MP David Hodgett.

"I am a strong supporter and advocate of our local sports clubs and the many benefits they provide our community," Mr Hodgett said.

"This funding is a huge win for local netball players with an all-weather venue that will attract and expand the competition across Victoria."

The association is the largest in the Outer East, with more than 2500 registered members and 250 teams from 23 suburban and country clubs.

Members come from across the Yarra Ranges including Chirnside Park, Mooroolbark, Lilydale, Kilsyth, Montrose, Mount Evelyn, Seville, Wandin, Woori Yallock, Launching Place, Warburton, Coldstream, Healesville, Yarra Glen, Dixons Creek, Toolangi, Wonga Park, Croydon Hills, Croydon, Warranwood, Ringwood, Heathmont, Bayswater, Boronia, and The Basin.

All competition games are played at Pinks Reserve in Kilsyth.

Junior cricket shake-up for the season

By Chris Anderson Although rain curtailed the day's play across the Yarra Valley, plans are in full swing for the upcoming season.

Both junior and senior competitions kicked off last weekend, and there is much more on the October agenda.

Things have been revamped in the senior competitions with the draw of one day cricket prevalent across the grades, particularly the lower ones.

Currently the competition has five senior grades catering for all abilities.

At the top end in DJ Strachan Shield, the Yarra Valley's premier competition, all eyes will be on whether Mount Evelyn and Warburton-Millgrove can continue their dominance in the grade, or whether the gap will be closed by the likes of Yarra Junction, who made huge strides last season.

Meanwhile, in the RA Finger Trophy, defending champions Woori Yallock will be the team to chase down, with the likes of Coldstream, Gruyere and Wandin snapping at their heels.

C-Grade grand finalists Healesville and Mount Evelyn will be looking to prove themselves as they step up a grade into tougher competition.

From there down, one day cricket is the flavour of the month, and with more flexibility afforded to players with work and personal commitments leading into Christmas, this should lead to full and competitive teams and grades.

All senior clubs are looking for new and returning players and with an open grading structure, cricketers are sure to find a team that will suit their ability.

Last weekend saw the introduction of the under-12, 14 and 16 competitions for the new season, while the under-10 action will kick off this Friday night.

Last season was a huge success for all grades as new, innovative programs were adopted.

Our younger grades took on Cricket Australia's junior formats, which came about after extensive research into the junior game and how to improve participation, involvement and ultimately, enjoyment.

These changes were roundly accepted and approved.

The under-16 grade also went through significant changes, including becoming 16 and under to improve playing numbers and playing Friday nights, under lights with pink balls.

Like the senior teams, junior teams are always on the look-out for new players.

Girls' cricket is also gaining momentum across the Yarra Valley, with the competition in conjunction with Mount Evelyn Cricket Club entering two teams in the Star Girls Cricket League Under-15s.

There have also been big changes to Cricket Australia's development programs.

The Junior Blasters (formerly In2Cricket) and Master Blasters (formerly T20 Blast) have been launched.

Many clubs have offered the Junior Blasters program for many years, and will be looking for another influx of cricketers as programs kick off over the coming weeks.

The Junior Blasters program allows participants to learn new skills including catching, throwing and teamwork, make new friends to learn together in a safe and inclusive environment.

Mount Evelyn Cricket Club also offers the Master Blasters program on Wednesday nights.

The Master Blasters program is designed to bridge the gap between the Junior Blasters' skill-focused program and formal cricket by giving every kid a chance to bat, bowl and field in a fast paced, high scoring game of cricket.

Burras roll towards a win The Warburton 1 bowls side played a strong Pakenham 1 away and continued its steady improvement by winning two rinks, before going down 67 to 88.

The side will play Mulgrave CC 1 at home this week.

Warburton 2 played Mooroolbark 3 at home in extremely wet conditions.

After leading at the break, the Burras could not hold it as Mooroolbark pulled away to create a handy lead.

Once again Warburton fought back well to draw level before the more experienced Mooroolbark side finished over the top, winning 64 to 71.

The Mid-Week Tuesday Pennant team played Yarra Glen 2 away and struggled on their quick rink to go down 43 to 76.

Rink scores were as follows: G. Walsh 20/29; R. Zunneberg 14/23 and S. Lord 9/24.

The side will play Chirnside Park 1 at home this week.

Social Bowls continues on Mondays from about noon. New and beginning players are most welcome.

The Wednesday night barefoot bowls competition starts on Wednesday 31 October.

It’s never too wet

By Jamie Strudley The heavens opened on Saturday 20 October but it didn't stop the athletes from Yarra Ranges Athletics from gathering at Morrison Reserve for round three of summer track and field.

A modified program of events enabled a mix of ages and genders to have a unique and fun morning of competition.

Sprint events were first up for the youngest age groups, completing both 100m and 70m events in quick succession.

While the track was wet, the lack of wind allowed some excellent races to be run.

A big group gathered for long jump and the Yarra Ranges coaches didn't miss the chance to include some skills development drills, a great distraction from the rain.

Not content with those events, many athletes elected to run in either the 800m, or joined a team mate to run the Parlauf Relay.

The club committee and athletes are incredibly grateful to the volunteers and parent helpers who rose to the challenge of organising a wet weather day to not only allow competition to continue, but to provide fantastic fun and great memories for all involved.

The club's seniors travelled to Casey Fields and Williamstown tracks for the alternate AV Shield competitions.

Some excellent results in from all athletes helped to secure team wins to the Open Men and Under-18 men's teams.

The Yarra Ranges Open Women, Under-18 and Under-14 women's teams secured third placings in the third of 12 rounds.

During the week, several club athletes represented their schools at the Eastern Metro Region Track and Field Championships.

The stand-out performances came from Amy Pearce winning the 12 to 13-year girls' high jump with a new personal best, Tiara Willis winning the 11-year girls' 80m hurdles in

On a day when the much-appreciated rains arrived, Johannes Pote overcame the difficult conditions to accumulate 40 very impressive points and take home the winner's voucher in the Warburton Golf Club Wednesday 17 October stableford competition.

Des Ray had his best round since coming back from his little procedure to snare the runner-up prize with 38 points.

The ball-count got down to 34.

Nearest the pin winners were CHB on the third and PK on the 12th.

No-one got onto the 17th with their second shot, but PK was an agonising 5 millimetres away.

In the nine-hole twilight comp, Darren Wyatt - brother of Steve, not son of - is in whitehot form and proved that with 25 sensational points.

Steve says he is playing off a 'way-too-high' handicap - and of course big brother would say that.

Stuart Patrick was runner-up with 23, a score that most times would win.

Therefore, it is no surprise that balls only got down to 18.

The nearest the pins went to Steve Patrick on the 12th, little brother Wyatt on the 15th and to Kim Kennedy on the 17th.

On Saturday 20 October the club hosted the PAR and The Little Claret Jug competition.

In challenging conditions, on a sodden course, Sean 'Bruno' Kennedy won A-Grade and the jug with a meritorious +2, a great score considering the weather.

Lance Atwell is arguably the club's most consistent golfer at the moment, and he took out B-Grade with a +1.

The daily runner-up was Paul Kennedy.

Life-saving spend makes inroads into road toll tragedy The report also confirmed that significant investments in enhancing support provided to TAC clients to get their lives back on track was paying dividends, with the highest ever client experience score recorded.

"It is extremely pleasing to see the TAC's strong investments in both prevention and rehabilitation making a real difference to the Victorian community," TAC chair Penny Armytage said.

In 2017-'18 the TAC recorded an operating loss of $447 million due to external economic factors, record investments in infrastructure, higher weekend payments for attendant care workers.

But independent actuaries PwC assured the TAC's ongoing financial sustainability was sound.

Highlights from the annual report included $1.49 billion paid to 51,000 clients to help get their lives back on track; 10,025 clients registered in the first year of myTAC and 40,000 receipts processed; 30 independent living units completed or under construction for the most seriously injured clients as part of a $40 million investment; 3596 health care providers signed up to LanternPay within its first year; and 82 per cent staff engagement - above global standards.

The Transport Accident Commission's annual report showed record results in preventing road trauma and supporting people injured on Victorian roads.

The report showed $283 million was spent on life-saving road safety infrastructure in 2017-'18.

The number of lives lost on Victoria's roads reached its lowest recorded six-month total in the first half of this year, at 102.
