Top SA trainer moving in By Garry Howe Leading South Australian trainer Phillip Stokes is transferring his racing headquarters to Racing.com Park. The multiple Group 1 winning trainer says the Pakenham Racing Club facility represents the future of the racing industry and he hopes to be in his purpose built stables next month. He will continue to have a presence at Adelaide’s Morphettville track but intends to make Pakenham his main base. “It’s the future,” he said. “There are 170 race meetings a season within one hour of Pakenham and you have night racing there and at Cranbourne. “I like the facilities at Pakenham as well. The grass training track is great and eventually they are putting in an uphill training track. That will be a real game changer.” Stokes said he was really looking forward to the move. “We are looking for a bit of a change,” he said. “We will look to buy a farm in the area. We really like the country atmosphere and everyone has been so nice. Nar Nar Goon is a nice little town.” “I will still commute to Adelaide but most of my time will be in Pakenham,” Stokes said. “We have the capacity to stable 40 horses there I will still have about 20 in Adelaide. At the moment it’s the other way around.” Stokes is South Australia’s leading trainer at present who has enjoyed Group 1 success with Marju Snip and Maybe Discreet in the 2006 and 2013 Australasian Oaks and Hucklebuck in the 2014 Emirates Stakes. A former jockey, he gained experience with leading trainers in America, France and Japan before setting up his own stable in Australia.

Adelaide trainer Phillip Stokes is moving to Racing.com Park.

The 12-bay walker is a feature of the Stokes complex being built at Racing.com Park. He has been working closely with Darrin Clifford from Stables Plus to custom build the new complex at Racing.com Park. When completed, it will have 40 boxes, a day yard and a 12 bay walker. Clifford explained that the trainers are heavily involved in the design of the stables, as they each have their own specifications and requirements. “It all comes down to each trainer’s preference,” he explained. “I make sure we dot the Is and cross the Ts before we turn any dirt over.” Clifford began by building stables on his

own Bayles property years ago, then branched out to build a number of others around the district, including for Pakenham trainer Julien Welsh. He now heads up Stables Plus and has four employees to keep up with the growing demand. Clifford has also built stables at Racing.com Park for brothers Shane Stockdale and Frankie Stockdale and when the Stokes project is finished will turn his attention to building a stable block for the high profile combination of David Hayes, Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig to complement their Euroa headquarters.

Their complex is right behind Stokes, who noted the irony in that. “When the Hayes’ used to be based at Morphettville, their stables were next to me there as well.”

Food, fun by the truckload The weather’s not the only thing hotting up this weekend, as Pakenham welcomes its biggest new event, the Pakenham Picnic. Owners of the Poncho Mexican Street Food Truck Jenny and Eddie Rojas-Martinez will be part of the action, joining over 20 food vans parked up each of the three-days, serving some amazing cuisine. With a massive growth and interest in food truck events, Jenny says part of the attraction comes from people appreciating their food cooked fresh on site, with genuine home-made recipes handed down through the generations. “Our specialty is the quesadillas,” she explained. “My kids love them so much they said ‘Mom, you need to go out and sell these to people’. So here we are almost two years later, having built our own food truck. It’s hard but very rewarding. When the customers say ‘Wow’ when tasting the food and making comments like “you took your nachos to the next level”, Jenny laughs. Catering for all dietary requirements is essential these days, so they do vegetarian, meat lovers, gluten free, dairy free etc. “Having the Pakenham Picnic on this side of the city is so great, as we look forward to meeting locals down this way and see the Pakenham Racecourse as having a great reputation as a venue.” Visit Jenny and Eddie, along with all the market stalls, entertainers and other food vendors across the Pakenham Picnic weekend 19-21 October at the Pakenham Racecourse, 420 Nar Nar Goon - Longwarry Rd Tynong. Club recognises staff stars By Tanya Ritson* On Monday 8 October Pakenham Racing Club celebrated their annual staff awards and a celebration it was. In an environment where the staff are usually the ones tending to everyone else’s needs, this night was all about them. There were many awards on offer but a touch of class and celebrity also with Shawn Cosgrove as master of ceremony and guest speaker, Danielle Storey from the Eastern Innovation Business Centre to elevate the evening. Celebrations started out with length of service, recognising those staff who have clocked up milestones of five years, 10 years, 15 years and even one employee at 20 years of service. What a fantastic effort to Tom Goldsack, who has been committed to the club for 20 years! The 10/10 Customer Excellence award went to Wendy Allen, who is an outstanding role model to everyone in ensuring an excellent customer experience for all diners in the Club Officer restaurant. The 2018 Rising Star was awarded to Matilda Brewer, who has been with the club just on 12 months. Matilda is one of the club’s success stories, having started with a few casual shifts to a point where she is a main stay at the Club Officer restaurant too. The club holds its values true to heart and awarded Greg Scott the Values Ambassador for 2018. Greg works at the racetrack and is a true model of how to conduct yourself in the workplace with your customers, peers and the greater community. A new award this year also included The Unsung Hero. This award was included because we know there are many people who

The 2018 Employee of the Year Colleen Kerrisk. just go about their day and do their best all the time. People like this are often overlooked due to their quieter nature but they really do provide a business with the much-needed stability that is always sought by businesses. This year it was awarded to Deb Trevorrow from the Cardinia Club. After all these awards, of course, the highlight of the night was the announcements of the Employee of the Year and the Manager of

the Year for 2018. The Employee of the Year for 2018 is Colleen Kerrisk. Colleen is one of our longer serving team members with nine years of service already and according to Colleen, she’s with the club until she retires! Colleen is a very experienced member of staff having started at the Cardinia Club bistro,

initially as a food and beverage attendant then supervisor, then to the racetrack as a beverage supervisor, then using all her skills and knowledge moved to Club Officer restaurant. Colleen was recently promoted to the restaurant manager at Club Officer. She is an absolute asset to the club and has a wealth of knowledge and experience in her chosen field of hospitality. The Manager of the Year for 2018 was awarded to Sasha Bogdanov. While Sasha hasn’t clocked up the nine years of service (yet) that Colleen has, Sasha has been with the Club for two years and certainly made an impact, using his skills and knowledge in hospitality management, food and beverage service and general operations across all three venues. Sasha has been venue manager at Club Officer for the last 18 months and more recently was appointed as venue manager for both Club Officer and Cardinia Club. All of these awards were very popular choices amongst staff (and customers), and the voting process across the 12 months leading into the annual awards is via peer and management nominations. The club is proud of all of our people and their achievements with the Annual Awards evening hailed as a fantastic success. The ‘team’ theme was certainly the flavour of the night as staff celebrated their wins and the ongoing successes they have planned for all three of the club’s venues, and what a way for everyone to get ready for what is now going to be a vibrant and busy spring racing period which then leads Club Officer and Cardinia Club into Christmas and beyond. * Tanya Ritson is the People and Culture Manager at Pakenham Racing Club.

Sasha’s winning ways great value and a sense of belonging to our members,” Sasha said. “I really enjoy the chance to ensure a ‘Winning Setting’ for our members. We aim to do this by having venues that everyone feels welcome in and that offers a wide range of entertainment from Quiz Nights to Bingo and Sports bars to Restaurants.” With over 16,000 social members there’s a wide range of incentives to appeal to all members and promotions such as the recent jackpot nights where $6500 was shared across 12 members are increasing the appeal of social membership. Sasha’s other focus area has been adding the training, structure and discipline needed to pull together a strong team of staff that would ultimately ensure delivery of this, and the club’s vision of a 10/10 experience. Earlier this year, having seen such a success at Club Officer, Sasha has taken on the venue management of Cardinia Club as venue man-

Sasha’s interest lies in ensuring there is a great range of food and beverages across the venues. “Our food concept is to deliver the classics better than anyone whilst also offering a range of venue speciality dishes with a slight twist for everyone to enjoy,” he said.

“As part of this offering the club has recently appointed new head chefs Mark Evans at Club Officer and Lachlan Kellett at Cardinia Club.” With the Mercure Hotel construction likely to commence later this year and the addition of a function room at the Cardinia Club to accommodate the numerous requests for smaller functions together Sasha has plenty to focus on.

At Pakenham Racing Club’s Annual Awards, Sasha Bogdanov was named Manager of the Year. Sasha joined the Club in September 2016, initially as the venue manager for the Pakenham Racecourse, but the club quickly realised his talents (whilst certainly suited to the racecourse) would be well utilised at the club’s newest venue, Club Officer. So, in March 2017 Sasha transferred to Club Officer as the venue manager. In the pursing 12 months Sasha put the required structure and initiatives in place utilising his experience gained from previous employers like RACV Interloch, Melbourne Park, Star City and Reading Cinemas. Sasha’s talents lay in the food and beverage and providing entertainment and value so his primary focus was for all of our members and customers to ensure this was delivered. “Coming from a large member organisation it is key for me to ensure that we are offering

The Pakenham Cup is now worth $300,000. 162723

Cup card is worth $1m Pakenham Racing Club has taken a major step forward in momentum and status with news that the Pakenham Cup meeting had topped the $1 million dollar mark. Racing Victoria announced Pakenham Cup Day will this year offer over $1 million in prizemoney. The Sportsbet Pakenham Cup received a funding boost to reach $300,000, headlining a quality day of racing that also features the $150,000 VOBIS Gold Bullion, which received a 25 per cent increase in prizemoney. Club CEO Michael Hodge said the increase in prizemoney further enhanced the PRC’s reputation and position as a key player in the

Victoria racing industry. “The club is delighted to see the prizemoney for the Pakenham Cup grow from $100,000 four years ago to $300,000 this season,” Hodge said. “Seeing our showcase raceday be awarded Saturday Metro status two years ago, combined with a record crowd of just over 8000 in attendance last year, lays the platform for a great day’s racing and entertainment on 8 December this year”. The increase in prizemoney will see heightened interest from a high calibre of horses, trainers and jockeys for the club’s feature race card.

It’s all about the fashion

“We are once again hoping to be blessed with fine weather so all entrant get to stuff their stuff on the Fashions stage in front of appreciative crowds of racegoers.” The Pakenham Fashions on the Field Stage and Registration area will be at the start of the marquee precinct, next to the end of the Event Centre. This area will also boast the pampering area. It’s not too late to get a group together and enjoy one of our hospitality offerings on the day as well, so please visit www.pakenhamracing.com. au

Following on from the success of last year’s fabulous day out at Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day, it’s that time of year for well-dressed locals to enjoy the 2018 edition of Fashions on the Field. “Competition for the coveted categories is always strong on Oaks Day, as many ladies target the early November date to show off their favourite spring fashion designs and outfits,” Pakenham Racing Club’s event manager Hayley Conn said. “With more and more locals struggling with the traffic hassles and commute to Flemington, we are finding many enjoy the relaxed country feel of Pakenham Gazette Oaks Day, along with the touch of class provided with our Fashions experience.” Offering four categories for the day including Lady of the Day, Mature Lady of the Day, Best Dressed Couple and the Best Dressed Gentleman, there is something for all fashion enthusiasts. Registrations are free on the day between 11am and 1pm, with the first heat commencing at 1.15pm.

Chipping in for all of us The Pakenham Racing Club Community Grants Program distributes $150,000 through major and minor grants and prize donation. These grants have the ability to benefit so many great causes. The Garfield Opportunity Shop received a minor grant to assist with shelving based on their move to the new premises in Garfield. Little did club officials realise just how much this little shop supports the local community. Last financial year the Garfield Op Shop donated $38,729.56 back to the local community and supported a 36 initiatives including CCTV cameras for Bunyip CFA, a grandstand for Longwarry Netball Club, planting tools for Cardinia Creek Landcare to assist in the planting of 2000 trees and assisted families and women via registration and uniform subsidiaries at local clubs. Having pledged $9300 to the Clean as Casper Mobile Shower for the Homeless in the 2017/18 Major Community Grants Fund, the racing club has followed founder Steve and his team’s story over the past year. He has worked tirelessy to fundraise, find the right truck and supplier for the fit out and it’s great to hear that this project will now come to fruition. Clean as Casper was successful in receiving $35,000 from the Sunsuper ’Dreams for a Better World’ fund and in early October was chosen as one of the Victorian Government’s Pick My Projects initiatives and have received $20,149 to finalise this project. With the major and minor grants needing to align with the Cardinia Shire’s Liveability Plan a number of clubs have held Charity race meetings to give their fundraising an extra boost. FOCUS ON … PRC SPRING RACING

Pakenham Racing Club chairman Simon Conn has been at the helm almost a year as the club heads into a busy Spring Racing Carnival period. He was vice-chairman to Don Duffy for 12 years prior to that - a period of great change for the club, which has gone from the prospect of hosting five race meetings a year to racing over 50 times last season. Simon agreed to sit down with Gazette editor Garry Howe over a beer or two at the Cardinia Club to share a story or two about his life and times at the races and beyond. GH: Thanks Simon, I’ve taken the liberty of getting a couple of schooners of 150 Lashes, because I’ve been told that’s a particular favourite. SC: Yes, that’s one of my favourites. I am also partial to a red wine, but that doesn’t fit with Beer O’clock, does it? GH: No, you’re right there. I have also been told that you are inclined to fall asleep after a few, so we might keep it to a couple so you don’t nod off on us. Is there any truth to that story? SC: I wouldn’t know, would I (smiling)? If I have fallen asleep it’s because I’m very busy and need a rest from time to time. GH: Okay, while you’re still up and about, tell us how you got into racing. SC: Well, I was manager of the Westpac Bank in Pakenham. The racing club banked with us, as did the Bourke family. My father Frank was a very good friend of David Bourke (long-time PRC secretary and former VRC chairman). When I left the bank in 1999, David approached me to join the committee and become the club’s treasurer. It sounds boring, because I really didn’t have a great knowledge of racing and I’m a terrible gambler. The club had plenty of people involved who had racing knowledge, but I could count to 10 and that put me in front of most of them. I have been on the committee ever since. GH: You have been vice-chairman for the past 13 years under Don Duffy. The committee has been pretty stable, hasn’t it? SC: I was reading in a draft of the annual report the other day about Don’s service to the club. He has been on the committee 23 years, so four more than me, and he has been chairman for a large part of that time as well. We have been pretty stable - we have had to be. Don did consider stepping down a couple of times but it was important that we maintained that stability, from the top down. There were a couple who wanted to step aside too over the past few years but we didn’t let them. When you build a new racetrack you need that stability on the committee. I have been on a few committees and I have never been on one that has worked as beautifully as the racing club has. The proof is in the pudding - we now have a new world class racetrack. GH: To come from where the club was less than a decade ago, on the verge of becoming a boutique club with five meetings a year to one that raced more than 50 times last season, must be so satisfying.

The Conn family at a night race meeting, from left: Alistair Conn, Marshal Crowley, Madeleine Conn, Simon Conn, Dianne Conn and Lucy Conn. 178707

Simon Conn shares a story or two over a beer at the Cardinia Club.

SC: Every time I go out there (to Racing.com Park) I shake my head; I can’t believe it’s there. Three years ago it was just a big paddock. It has been a huge undertaking on a lot of levels, including the financial side of managing a $100 million project, which is my area of expertise. So yes, it has been extremely satisfying. GH: As vice-chairman, you were also front and centre at a few of the major milestones along the way. SC: Yes, I had to fill in for Don on a number of occasions - like the sod turning ceremony with Denis Napthine, the announcement of the synthetic track and a couple of Pakenham Cups as well. That has helped make the transition from vice-chairman to chairman pretty seamless. GH: I imagine there’s still a bit to do. SC: It was a lot of work to sell the old racetrack and get this new one up and running, but there are still quite a few challenges ahead of us and a lot still to do. There are plans on place to do all sorts of things. A swimming pool and an uphill training track are on the drawing board and the turf training track is almost ready to open. The Equine Train facility is pretty exciting and should be open by the end of the year. GH: And you’re coming up to a pretty busy time now on and off the racetrack. SC: We have the big Night Racing Series opening this Friday (19 October), the Pakenham Picnic food truck carnival over three days this weekend, then we gear up for Oaks Day and then the Pakenham Cup meeting on Saturday 8 December, which this year carries $1 million prizemoney for the first time. I’ve got my first AGM coming up as well - so there’s plenty on. GH: As far as other sporting interests go, you’re a pretty keen Hawthorn Football Club I believe. SC: My grandfather used to own a butcher shop in Hawthorn going back to the days when they were the Mayblooms, so all the family is Hawthorn. Well, all except my brother Andrew, who became interested in the football in 1966 and, as a consequence, barracks for St Kilda, given they won their only flag that year. We were playing at the Barham Pro-am one day and ran into (Hawthorn legend) Michael Tuck. I made the observation, for Andrew’s benefit, that when Hawthorn and St Kilda played in the 1971 grand final, both clubs had won only one premiership each and that one had gone on to be fairly successful, and the other not so. Tucky said he had never thought of it that way before. GH: You mentioned the golf. My mail is that all you Conns love the game and don’t mind the odd golf trip either. SC: Yes on both counts. We all love our golf

floristry and works in a florist and an organic food store in Beaconsfield. They all love their racing - more for the social side of it than the punting, a bit like me. Although Madeleine and her partner Marshal have dabbled in horse ownership - they had a share in Curvano, which is pretty handy. GH: Aren’t they getting married on Cox Plate weekend, meaning you’ll be in Tasmania when Winx goes for history at Moonee Valley? SC: You’ve done your homework. Yes, but the wedding is on the Friday, so there’s a fair chance we will find somewhere to watch the race on the Saturday. GH: You’re no longer with the bank. What do you do now? SC: I was in the bank for 24 years and did a bit of finance broking for a couple of years. Then I ran into a bloke who asked if I was interested going into a business with him. I now own that business, Pallet Control Australia. It’s a bit boring, but we pretty much manage pallets for people. Most people who use them have a pallet problem, which is where we come in. We have two offices in Melbourne, one in Sydney and one in Brisbane and 32 staff. Five or six days a month I work interstate. GH: You get to Sydney a bit, do you reckon The Everest will ever rival the Melbourne Cup as the race that stops a nation, or is it just Sydney people trying to go one-up on Melbourne? SC: It will never compete with the Melbourne Cup as our most famous sporting event. The Everest is a big event with a lot of money behind it and it is creating interest but the Melbourne Cup is a wonderful race and they have a long way to go to engage people to the same extent it does. Someone said recently that you either love (Racing NSW boss) Peter V’Landys or you hate him, but he doesn’t come second very often. What they do have up there is a better structure - with racing categorized into city, provincial and country. Down here, the likes of Pakenham, Cranbourne, Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong who race 30 or more times a year are being governed the same as clubs who might race once a year. They need to manage us differently to those clubs, we have different needs. Last season Pakenham raced 52 times when you take into account transferred meetings, that puts us behind the eight-ball straight away. GH: We might wind it up on that note Simon. Thanks for the chat, it was very enlightening. SC: My pleasure. I’m just glad I didn’t put you to sleep. GH: Not at all - and we’ve only had a couple, so it’s good to see you’re still awake as well.

and I have been on four trips this year - which is a bit out of the ordinary. There are two I go on every year and there just so happens to have been a few others this year. Having said that though, I am down for a tour of Great Britain and Ireland next year with a group from Beaconhills (Golf Club), where we will play at St Andrews and Carnoustie and watch the British Open. My brother Andrew is a sensational golfer, he’s off two or three. He is best mates with (Beaconhils pro) Mark Griffiths. They used to wag school to play golf - and he has a lot more golf trips than I do. GH: You grew up in Upper Beaconsfield and are pretty involved in the community up there. SC: I went to Upper Beaconsfield Primary School and Pakenham High School and then joined the bank. I have been a member of the golf club for 43 years and served in every position on the committee, but I’m just a player now. I have been treasurer of the RSL sub-branch for 20 years. My father Frank was president and secretary of the RSL from 1952 and was involved for 45 years, which is how I came to be involved. Dad was in the artillery in World War II and saw action in New Guinea and Bougainville. Over the years I have also served on the cricket club committee and been runner and water boy for the junior football club when the kids were playing. I love the place and haven’t been able to find anywhere else I would rather live. There are only about three days in summer and a month or two in winter where I would rather not live there. GH: How did you end up getting a job in the bank? SC: Dad was very good friends with Bill White, manager of the Commercial Bank of Australia in Pakenham, which became the Westpac Bank. He gave me my first opportunity - and was very proud when I returned to the branch as manager quite a few years later. Actually, my first job as manager was in Bunyip. I was working in Collins Street in the city and the next day reported for duty in High Street Bunyip - what a difference that was. I loved working at Bunyip, what a beautiful little town. GH: You met the lovely Di while working at the bank, didn’t you? SC: That’s correct. It was the Westpac Bank in Dandenong. I was assistant manager and Di was an signing officer. We hung out for a couple of years and it was a natural progression to get married. We have three wonderful kids - the eldest Madeleine is 28 soon and actually gets married in Tasmania at the end of the month. She has a commerce degree majoring in HR and has just landed her dream job. Alistair is 25, also has a commerce degree majoring in marketing and the youngest, Lucy, is studying

Woolies bow out

We just keep getting MEGA.

The John Street Woolworths store will reportedly close its doors early in 2019.

In 2012, speculation mounted that the John Street outlet would be shut down to allow the chain to focus on the new multi-million dollar facility. However, Woolworths Limited was adamant the John Street store would stay in business. Shoppers have also expressed concern about the inconsistency between the two stores' operating hours. While the soon-to-close John Street Woolworths remains open until midnight, Market-

place closes at 9pm. "A lot of people like to do their grocery shopping later at night when it's quiet and you've had some time to wind down from work," Kooweerup's Douglas Porter said. "It doesn't make sense to be losing stores when the population keeps rapidly increasing." The company posted a 12.5 per cent rise in profit for the 2018 financial year, announcing it would increase dividend payments to shareholders by more than 20 per cent.

However, directors flagged that sales growth would drop off as a result of the company's ban on free single-use plastic bags. The store has faced additional financial pressure since German retail powerhouse Aldi revealed it was opening a second supermarket in Pakenham's CBD. The John Street Woolworths is rumoured to be closing on 29 January, 2019. Woolworths Limited has been contacted for comment.

Pakenham's original Woolworths store will close its doors for the final time next year, amid increasing pressure from rival supermarket titans. Company executives have chosen to slash the store from the chain's national line-up, opting not to renew the upcoming lease for the iconic John Street site. The supermarket's sudden demise will leave just one remaining Woolworths in Pakenham's CBD. Acknowledged by the community as "Paky's first Safeway", the announced closure has hit close to home for a number of life-long residents. "I love this Woollies - it is way better than the other one," customer Jade Kercheval said. "Why does Pakenham have to lose the places that have the most history and heritage?" Former employee Louisa Maxwell paid tribute to the Woolworths supermarket. "I got my first ever job there at the tender age of 15," she said. "The staff there are absolutely fantastic. "Some that I worked with are still there to this day." The company's flagship Pakenham store, Woolworths Marketplace, opened in 2011 as part of a 36 store shopping complex - injecting $70 million into the suburb. The original Woolworths - a major tenant of Pakenham Place - was already trading for 30 years prior. Many were confused by the Marketplace location; given it is only a four-minute walk from Pakenham Place.

THE LOWDOWN Q&A

THREE … Three ways to save money...

With Helen Bell, president of the Cranbourne U3A

What is something people don't know about you? I was brought up in Glen Iris in a very active family. All involved in scouting, I was a CubLleader for many years and still involved with the Whitehorse District interviewing new leaders and advising them of all the training requirements for their individual roles within the Scouting movement. What is your most memorable moment? Becoming president of U3A recently. I enjoy the company of the people there and admire the brilliant work that many of our members produce. Also my 50th wedding anniversary last year was pretty special. How long have you been with Cranbourne U3A and what services does the group offer? I have been at Cranbourne U3A for about five years now, I joined when I retired from my job as a school administrator - worked in schools for all my working life and loved meeting all the families and have lots of happy memories. Have you got any activities or events coming up you would like to encourage people to attend? We are having an open day on Friday 19 October at our rooms at the back of the Library building - entry through the Casey Radio entrance. We will have tutors demonstrating their classes - many crafty classes, music as well, singing and guitar, chess and fishing and table tennis, calligraphy, art (both general painting and portraiture), sewing and knitting and Mahjong and Bridge classes too.

At school I...... I was your average student - loved English, art and crafty subjects, Not great in the sporting arena as I was and still am asthmatic. Which six dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? Probably just the family as we all love to get together and have a laugh. Could name Prince Harry (but he would be too busy), Jeff Kennett (talk about Hawthorn Football Club), we are all mad footy fans, my mother - she would love to spend time with the great-grandchildren; she did not live to see them but they are gorgeous.

Favourite holiday spot in Australia? Most recently we loved staying in Tasmania at Grindlewald. Just out of Launceston - we spent a lovely time there at a home with gorgeous gardens. A lovely family time, my daughter had a graduation ceremony from University of Tasmania. Very special time. What's your favourite book? As I am an avid reader. Recently read Di Morrissey's "The Islands" and loved that - beautiful to read about such a lovely place as I was there many years ago when I travelled all around the world. In my early twenties when I spent a year in England working. Travelled each way by ship as you did in those days. Nowadays a quick flight and you are anywhere you like within a day or two.

12398912-RA37-18

What is your favourite movie? Very silly but I always get a laugh out of the Home Alone series, even when I had broken ribs - ouch that hurt a lot.

If you were PM for a day, what would you do? I would try to get a better deal for older people particularly in aged care facilities and more money for pensioners and the disabled.

1

Fast from spending If you are more of a spender than a saver, a spending fast may work. A spending fast is simply a period where you decide to spend only on necessities. You give up your morning lattes, fast-food visits and other wants to concentrate on building savings.

2

Save it and forget it The best way to save is to commit to an automatic savings plan. This is a great way to boost savings, especially if you lack discipline. Consider having money deducted from your bank account each pay period and moved to a savings account.

3

Reduce your debt Getting your debt under control is essential to saving money. Take time to list your creditors, from the highest interest rate to the lowest. Use your resources to pay off the highest-interest liabilities first.

Spirit spooks Bunjil’s halls

'Bizarre' intrusion A Narre Warren South family have been terrified by an intruder who strode into their home in the middle of the morning, a court heard on 15 October. Ghok Yien Thiang, 20, walked in uninvited through an unlocked fly-screen door, causing alarm to several occupants in the house on 3 May. A mother hid with her nine-week-old baby behind a bed during the bizarre encounter, Dandenong Magistrates' Court was told She stated in her victim impact statement she was thankful that her husband was at home at the time to confront Thiang. "I don't know what he'd have done (otherwise)," she said. Thiang disregarded other female occupants who beseeched him to leave. One recalled that he "got in my face" when she asked him to go. He told them he was looking for a person named 'Jackie', and made a phone call while standing out on the verandah: "I'm here. Where are you?" He held up the flat of his hand, warning a male resident not to "come near me". Thiang eventually left, driving away his

brother's car. He was a disqualified driver at the time. In their victim impact statements, family members described not being able to sleep, being teary, fearful of noises at night and losing their zeal for social outings since the incident. Their close family unit had become fractious. They'd also upgraded home security with CCTV around their home. On 23 February, Thiang crashed while trying to pass heavy traffic on Narre-Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren. He swerved several times, narrowly missing other vehicles. He veered onto the gravel verge, striking a roadside reflective pole and nearly flipping his car, police told the court. Thiang fled from the scene on foot, and was arrested in Narre Warren later that morning. He also pleaded guilty to smashing a window to break into a recently built Becon Home in Clyde North on 29 June. He later told police he slept there overnight because he had nowhere else to stay. He was also charged with shoplifting clothes worth $149 from Dandenong Plaza and threatening to send security guards "to their maker" with what appeared to be a 30-centi-

metre ivory tusk . After a struggle on the ground, Thiang fled on foot. He was chased for up to a kilometre by police before his arrest. An "extremely remorseful" Thiang - who was born in an Ethiopian refugee camp - had suffered a severe mental health breakdown this year, his lawyer told the court. His "bizarre" behaviour at the Narre Warren South house stemmed from believing friends were waiting for him, the lawyer said. "He understands that was very terrifying for the people in the house. "He left when he realised it was not the correct house." Now in ongoing treatment, Thiang was "feeling a lot better and healthier in himself". Magistrate Doug Bolster said if not for Thiang's young age, unblemished criminal record and mental health issues, he would have been jailed. Thiang was convicted and put on an 18-month supervised community corrections order with 200 hours of unpaid work, drug testing and alcohol treatment. He was disqualified from driving for 12 months.

By Jessica Anstice Eight people have reportedly resigned from Bunjil Place after sighting a ghost haunting the building, according to an anonymous Bunjil Place employee. The ghost is described as 'faceless' by all who have experienced an encountering with it. "I had that experience but I am not sure if I am allowed to say anything about it," the employee said. "I believe they will not want to make it a thing to this place." Bunjil Place is days away from celebrating its first birthday. The anonymous employee said it might have something to do with the history of the land Bunjil Place was built on. A number of sources have weighed in their ideas of what it might be. GCT paranormal investigator David Hogg said, "If that many people really have witnessed an apparition that strong that they are all afraid to return then yes I would suggest that it is something to do with the land itself and possibly this new building that has been built there has disturbed it." City of Casey cr Rex Flannery said he has never heard of it. "I leave council meetings late at night and I've never seen anything," Cr Flannery said. "Whoever said they saw it, that's amazing and it should get investigated." A Bunjil Place spokesperson denied there have been reports of ghost sightings in the building.

Phil’s dinosaur dreams brought to life By Jessica Anstice Dandenong North's Phil Martin is into dinosaurs so much that he has created eight large dinosaur fossils made from pieces of wood. His dinosaur dreams began when he was just 10 years old. "I wanted to build dinosaurs and have my own dinosaur park but of course I didn't know how I could possibly do that," he said. "I had a couple of attempts but they were big failures. Now that I'm 50 I thought that this is a good time to have another go. Mr Martin has built eight dinosaurs to date. "I got the patterns from the internet, printed them off and cut out all the little shapes," he said. "Then I drew them really big on thin pieces of wooden board, then cut the pieces out and painted them bright colours before putting it all together." From drawing it all out to cutting it up and painting it, it takes Mr Martin between 30 and 40 hours to complete a dinosaur. He has created and named all different types of dinosaurs including his largest which is five metres long and two metres high, Bronte, the Teenage Brontosaurus. Bronte is made up of 35 pieces. The first dinosaur he built was the red one, named Big Red. Big Red is a Raptor and is made up of 45 pieces. Others he has built include a Triceratops, Steg the Stegosaurus, Tank the Ankylosaurs and a Pterodactyl. On Saturday, 10 November at the Narre Warren North Uniting Church, all Mr Martin's

Dinosaur lover Phil Martin built his own dinosaurs using cut outs of wood. 186295 dinosaurs will be on display. If you love dinosaurs, then be sure to come along and visit the Dinosaur Fossil Experience between 10am and 4pm. "We're putting all the dinosaurs in the garden for children to come along and see them," Mr Martin said. "We're going to have a fossil hunt, some colouring and I'm also going to have one of my dinosaurs that I'm going to pull apart and I will have the children help to put it back together. "There will also be information about all of the different types of dinosaurs." Mr Martin has always been an arts and crafts lover. He attends the Narre Warren Uniting Church art group every Wednesday. "I made my first dinosaur three months ago and I really had no thought of people coming

to see them," he said. "I just wanted to build a dinosaur and that was enough to make me happy. But then when I saw the children's reaction when I brought it to Sunday School. The children were just so excited to see it. "I don't know how many more dinosaurs I will build because we're running out of room at home but I'm just happy to show them off and see how it goes." Working as a lollypop man and as Santa at mostly Myer for around 24 years, Mr Martin has always loved children. "Dinosaurs are very unique. I think the size of the dinosaur is very different to the animals that we have today," he said. "That sort of thing interests children."

Cash in Mick's honour A project designed to inspire African Australians through the game of basketball has taken out the Casey Cardinia Foundation's illustrious Mick Morland Memorial Grant. The award, named after the devoted City of Casey councillor, is considered one of the group's marquee acknowledgements. It comes as the region's leading philanthropic association fundraised more than $80,000 for various community groups during a dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday, 12 October. The foundation set a record total in recent years, providing 20 local organisations a helping hand.

More than 310 people attended the gala, participating in an action-packed night of live auctions, entertainment and other fundraising activities. Foundation chairperson Paul Thomas revealed the charity association has now donated more than $630,000 worth of grants to the community. "I am proud to say that this year has been a record year for the Foundation with more funds being raised, more funds into corpus and more organisations benefiting from our grants than ever before," Mr Thomas said. "The success of the evening is due to the incredible generosity of the individuals and business who care about our community." Mr Thomas also acknowledged the growing needs of the community. "The Foundation first began in 2003 and in those 15 years there has been more than 900,000 people move into the area, an average of 60,000 every year." Mr Thomas said. "And as such we had a record 67 applications received from local community groups this year, an indication of the need but also the relevance of the Foundation." The foundation aims to support the social, community and general welfare of those living in the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire. It provides grants to projects that support the growing needs of its communities. Some of the noteworthy initiatives the group has provided funding for include the Lakeside Residents Group's tireless hard work to keep Cardinia's Australia Day event free, installing defibrillators at the Kooweerup Over 60s Cricket Club and Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre and encouraging African Australians with a passion for basketball to participate in local competitions. Guests danced to the sounds of the Baker Boys Band while MC Andy Reid provided thorough entertainment for those in attendance.

Lucky Berwick man scratches big win scratched. We looked at each other for about half an hour asking 'Is it? Isn't it?'. "You know it in your own head, but until you guys could confirm it you just can't quite believe it. You wonder if it is real or if there has been a mistake." The Berwick Instant Scratch-Its aficionado admitted he was reluctant to leave his winning ticket anywhere until he could deliver it to Tatts' doorstep. "We didn't leave the house all weekend. We haven't gone out. We didn't want to leave the

house in case there was a fire or something. These are the strange things that go through your mind," he laughed. "I looked for somewhere safe to put the ticket and I ended up shoving it in an old birthday card in the drawer. "This weekend we're going to sit down and work on our bucket list. That's how we'll treat it. We won't go nuts. It's a good way to get the prize - having something each week. We can plan it out and that's really exciting."

No bail for alleged ‘foul disobedience’

12388226-CG22-18

A man defied police to the point of allegedly urinating on the floor of his Narre Warren police cell and defecating on a provided towel, a court bail hearing has heard. Neil Ashley McGrath, 48, of Noble Park, unsuccessfully applied for bail via prison video link at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 15 October. Police alleged that McGrath was set to be charged over his conduct in police custody in September - on top of 50-odd outstanding charges. The court heard McGrath allegedly stripped off his hospital gown in the back of the police divisional van. Police had to carry him to his Narre Warren police cell because he refused to walk, nominal informant Sergeant Daniel Justice told the court. McGrath claimed he was derobed because he had been assaulted by police, his barrister

Gordon Porter said. In the cells, he allegedly banged on the cell doors, swore, and threw wet paper towel onto the cell's camera and glass cell door. He urinated by the cell door, causing a puddle outside the cell. Then he tried to flush a blanket down the toilet, police claimed. After complaining about the cold temperature of his cell's shower, McGrath defecated on a towel and flicked faeces onto the cell door, police told the court. McGrath had been arrested at his boarding house on 3 September. He was wanted on eight outstanding bench warrants for not appearing at court over the past two years. The warrants related to eight separate criminal matters, including several incidents of alleged dangerous driving and being pursued by police. He had 35 previous convictions for failing

to appear on bail. Mr Porter said McGrath had forgotten one of his court dates because he had an appointment to collect his dentures on the same day. "He wants to be released on bail because half of his teeth are at home." Nominal informant Sergeant Daniel Justice told the court that such medical matters were irrelevant "given how serious the offending is". McGrath argued for his release due to his mental health issues, not receiving enough methadone in prison, a recent asthma attack the night before and his missing dentures. In refusing bail, magistrate Doug Bolster said McGrath failed to meet the 'exceptional circumstances' test, and was also an unacceptable risk of failing to attend court. McGrath was remanded to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 24 October.

Man armed with gun arrested A 34-year-old man has been arrested following an incident on Bellevue Drive, Berwick on Thursday 11 October. Police were called to the premises just before 8pm following reports of a man inside the house armed with a pellet gun. The man was arrested about 9.30pm without incident. Approximately 20-30 emergency service vehicles attended. He was taken to hospital for assessment. The Bomb Response Unit were called as a device was located at the premises. The area has been deemed safe.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating after an aggravated burglary and the theft of a motor car in Narre Warren South overnight on Monday October 15. The aggravated burglary occurred at a residential home on Ormond Road when the homeowner, a 59-year-man, answered a knock on his front door just before 10pm. When the victim opened the door, a group of six to eight men entered the home and assaulted the victim by kicking and punching him to the ribs and head. The offenders ran through the house, stealing cash and the keys to the victim's car, a 2006 red Holden Commodore with registration 1NY 7FY, before fleeing the scene. The victim was conveyed to a local hospital and while being treated for his injuries, the thieves returned and stole the victim's Holden Commodore. The victim told investigators that the men were aged in their mid to late teens and perceived to be of African appearance. Investigators believe the car was seen in the Stonington area around 5.30am and are appealing for anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.

Tess Bridge: Ooo how cool Connie Meier: Patrice Smith keep an eye out for this unusual visitor while at work! Husina Ali Zakiri: I was scared reading it. Patient is freed on bail By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Back row: Jordan, James, principal Wes Holloway, Tamsyn and Tianna. Front: Madi, Ava, Chris Buckingham (principal for a day), Cameron and Liam.

Leading by the book By Jessica Anstice Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO, Chris Buckingham went back to school on Monday, 8 October, but not as you might think! Donning his principal's mantle and bearing a flexible timetable, Mr Buckingham attended Oatlands Primary school on as part of the Principal for a Day program. Mr Buckingham spoke with students and teachers in classrooms and special programs; and met with the school leadership team to

discuss how schools and public libraries can work more closely together. "Principal for a Day is terrific opportunity for business and community leaders to engage with local schools," Mr Buckingham said. "I really appreciated the chance to work with Wes Holloway and the Oatlands PS and learn more about how local schools work." Principal Mr Holloway said, "We are happy to be hosting Chris at Oatlands Primary School - we understand the vital role public libraries play in our community supporting early litera-

cy and encouraging lifelong learning." The Principal for a Day program is run in state primary, secondary and special schools across Victoria. The aim is to increase understanding and awareness of the vital importance of strong partnerships between schools, business and the community. It is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research and is funded by the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) through the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership.

A Dandenong North woman accused of shoplifting more than $10,000 of goods has been freed on bail after arguing prison authorities had failed to properly manage her Crohn's Disease. Jade Emery, 24, proved ‘exceptional circumstances’ - the highest test for bail - in a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 October. She had already spent 64 days in remand on the charges including burglary while on bail, theft, failing to appear on bail, and possession of anabolic steroids, testosterone and 'ice'. She and her boyfriend were accused of stealing a $3499 digital camera and $1299 security camera from a store room at JB Hi-Fi at Fountain Gate on 7 June. They also bought a $70 toilet at Bunnings Keysborough, removed it from its box and then smuggled out an angle grinder and laser level worth $1294 inside the box, police claimed. They allegedly used a similar method stealing more than $1900 of power tool kits and a set of bathroom scales from a Bunnings store in Wonthaggi on 2 June. The same day, the couple stole $4389 of game consoles from the rear storeroom of a Big W outlet, police nominal informant Sergeant Shane Arnheim told the court. Emery was also accused of stealing a $1499 Samsung Galaxy Note phone from a David Jones store in Chadstone in November. As part of Emery's bail, she was ordered to report daily to police, comply with CISP, obey a night curfew, not attend shopping centres and not to associate with the co-accused boyfriend. She will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 29 October.

Food, wine and sunshine By Jessica Anstice Over 50 local and regional stall holders attended the Casey Food and Wine Festival held at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick on Saturday, 13 October. Now in its second year the festival was an opportunity for businesses to showcase their produce, products, culinary skills, alcohol by providing samples or products for sale. Stall holders from inner city Melbourne, Gippsland, Mornington Peninsula, Yarra Valley, Western suburbs and South West Coast attended the festival. Approximately 3000 visitors wandered

through with a mixture of ages, children, teenagers and cultures. Workshops including Dani Venn a Master Chef finalist and Sanctuary for Souls (meditation, wine and chocolate) provided hands on experiences for all. The children were kept busy with hands on cooking and making workshops, along with the playground and jumping castle.

Chorus sings out against the evil of family violence By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Kristin Leigh with the petition. 186230

Protesters hit carriages Armed with a 30,000 strong petition, activists and other members of the community paid a visit to road safety minister Luke Donnellan's office in Endeavour Hills on Friday, 19 October demanding horse-drawn vehicles be banned from Victorian roads. The activists were told they were unable to meet with Mr Donnellan on arrival. "The road safety minister refused to see us for even 30 seconds so that's really disappointing," Melbourne Against Horse-Drawn Carriages campaign director Kristin Leigh said. "I think that says a lot about our parliament in today's time." The petition commenced after they witnessed collapsed horses laying in the middle of a busy CBD road on a hot summers day. "Its strong response is further proof that people are sick and tired of seeing horses used and abused in this way," Ms Leigh said.

Although signed by people from all over Australia and around the globe, the majority of signatories reside in the state of Victoria. "With a state election only six weeks out, the Labor government may want to start considering Victoria's expectations on the treatment of animals," she said. "Melbournians are becoming increasingly aware of the issues associated with using horses in this archaic way, and exploiting animals in general." The road safety act still considers horses as vehicles, with no more consideration than a car or a truck. "That has to change," MsLeigh said. "VicRoads and the road safety minister must finally acknowledge what is abundantly clear - that horses are not vehicles and should not be used as such."

A ground-breaking project combines the might of Casey’s choirs singing out against family violence. You’re the Voice is led by Jonathon Welch, the founder of Choir of Hard Knocks and Voices of Casey community choirs. The project was launched at Dandenong RSL on 10 October with a soaring choral rendition of You’re the Voice made famous by exDandenong singer John Farnham. The lyrics once penned as a Vietnam War protest were equally pertinent to family violence, Dr Welch said. “We’re all someone’s daughter/ We’re all someone’s son,” he recited. “How long can we look at each other/ Down the barrel of a gun?” Dr Welch and several members in the Voices of Casey choir were touched by family violence. At age 60, Dr Welch says he is bringing up two nephews after rescuing them from an abusive household. “I’ve truly learnt the value of community choirs through my work over the last two decades. “It’s more than just singing, it’s about friendship, it’s about support, it’s about everyone caring about each other. “It’s about looking around the periphery of

our backyard and not just straight ahead.” A Voices of Casey choir member told of escaping two abusive relationships. For 45 years she had not sung. Being a member of the choir had “turned my life around”, she said. John Wells, president of Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL, said he grew up in a family of eight boys with loving parents that “fought like Kilkenny cats”. He saw his father break a chair over his mother’s head, his mum run a hot iron up his dad’s arm. “For me, the violence in us all is so close to the surface at times.” Mr Wells “looked down a barrel of a gun” at war. “So your words resonate with me. “What you’re doing is important. It goes to the basis of a fair go, it goes to the basis of looking after and loving each other.” The project involves a series of workshops conducted by Dr Welch and Claire Patti of Australian Voices. It is supported by City of Casey and Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL. You’re the Voice culminates in a combined Casey choirs concert conducted by Dr Welch at Bunjil Place, Narre Warren on 25 November. Dreaming of a good night sleep? that impacts on their sleep. "Alarmingly, compared to the rest of the world, Australian adults are among the most likely to use prescription sleep drugs to aid sleep," they said. "But with an experienced team of sleep scientists led by Katia Perceros available, patients no longer have to simply dream of getting a good night's sleep." With this new service, fully trained and accredited physicians will provide a comprehensive assessment and can promptly diagnose and establish an appropriate treatment pathway for patients. St John of God Berwick Hospital has joined forces with the Sleep and Respiratory Group to become experts in diagnosing and treating sleep and respiratory disorders for the tired people of Melbourne's south east. This month a new sleep unit at St John of God Berwick Hospital's Kangan Drive location opened to help patients tackle sleepiness, snoring, insomnia, nocturia, unexplained weight gain, poor sleep quality, general sleep concerns and most importantly, angry bed partners. A sleep expert at St John of God Berwick Hospital said that over 50 percent of Australia adults having some kind medical issue

travel far to access this much needed local service. A sleep study is a comprehensive recording of a number of different variables including heart rate, brain wave activity, eye movements, muscle tone, respiratory effort, breathing, oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, limb movement, snoring, body position as well as infrared video recording. While sleep studies can be funded by private health insurance, the service is also available to self-funded patients and can be accessed through a referral from a GP. Demystifying vasectomy around the world Not many people are aware that November 14 is this year’s World Vasectomy Day. The event started in 2012 in Australia and has been gathering pace ever since. Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic said that the idea behind the day is to demystify vasectomy and encourage men to come forward "for what is the simplest and safest form of contraception." “A lot of rubbish is written and spoken about vasectomy,” Mr McCahy said. “All sorts of techniques are described such

as ‘no scalpel’, ‘open-ended’ and ‘minimallyinvasive’. It does not really matter which technique is used as long as it is effective with very few complications. “As with most operative procedures, it is better to see someone who is experienced and can deal with any problems that arise. I would routinely advise any patient to avoid a general anaesthetic if it is possible as recovery is much quicker, so I perform the majority of my vasectomies with local anaesthetic.” Mr McCahy said that men should be aware that the procedure is irreversible and that additional contraception is required

for a few months (until the semen is clear of sperm). “There is a very small failure rate (much lower than the pill) and there is a small risk of chronic testicular pains which can be tricky to treat,” Mr McCahy said. “Don’t let that put you off and think about joining the thousands of men who are taking the snip.” Philip McCahy is also a consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. FOCUS ON … MEDICALLY SPEAKING

Skin care experts Dandenong Dermatology Centre has been providing dermatology care and laser therapy to the area for many years. The centre is headed by Dr Peter Fergin, Dr Olivia Milne and Dr Stephen Gilmore. The trio were recently joined by Dr Rebecca Nguyen. Laser treatments are provided by dermatology and cosmetic nurse Marie Lebrasse. Marie has many years of expertise with laser treatments and techniques. She regularly updates her laser knowledge and skills and adheres to all new standards and regulations. Dr Fergin says that with summer over, now is the perfect time to repair the freckles or pigmentation that appear on exposed skin on the

face, chest and hands. “Photo rejuvenation is one of the newest therapies in laser, and gives great results with minimal down time. “Photo rejuvenation with radio frequency technologies applies small amounts of heat safely into the dermis leading to remodelling of collagen and elastin, which, in turn, leads to plumping of the skin. “The epidermis also tightens giving the treated skin a smoother, more youthful appearance." Dandenong Dermatology Centre is at 1/110 David Street. Call 9791 3455. The first cosmetic consultation is free.

Invisible braces and total care at Elite Each patient is given personalised care from Dr Andy Ong at Elite Orthodontics at Narre Warren South. The focus of the clinic is to bring the latest and best advances in clinical orthodontics including braces to the Casey-Cardinia community. Staff aim to provide caring and experienced treatment by a registered Australasian Orthodontic Board-certified specialist orthodontist. The practice encourages parents to be chair-side during visits to allow treatment progress to be discussed in detail. Operating for the past six years in the Casey-Cardinia area, the practice offers a minimal waiting list and a scheduling policy which allows patients to start treatment when they want to.

Elite Orthodontics offers a professional service in clean, modern rooms. 165085 And patients only see one orthodontist with Dr Ong there from start to finish. Traditional metal braces, clear braces and even invisible lingual braces that are fitted onto the inner surfaces of the teeth are available at the clinic.

SPECIALIST ORTHODONTIC CLINIC

Staff also use Invisalign - clear, plastic, custom-fitted splints that fit over the teeth and help straighten them without the need for braces. But the main strength of the clinic is the use of state-of-the-art technology such as computer-aided visualisation software to demonstrate various treatments and their effects allowing patients to gain an in-depth understanding of the proposed treatment. There is also a flexible, no-fuss payment plan and costs of treatment and expected duration of treatment are always discussed beforehand, so there are no surprises. No referral is needed and before and after school appointments are available. The clinic at 236 Ormond Road, Narre Warren South, is open four days a week from Monday to Thursday. Phone 8790 6288.

Doveton Pharmacy was established almost 60 years ago and Bipin Vohora has been the proprietor for half of that time. Situated next to Doveton Medical Centre, which was established around the same time, the pharmacy has developed close relationships with the centre's doctors and patients. Bipin said it is very much an older style family pharmacy, where three generations of some families are his customers. Bipin obtained an honours degree in Pharmacy from Brighton, England, before migrating to Australia. He worked in London, Warragul and Noble Park, before eventually buying in Doveton. Bipin said that Doveton has been a great place to work as there is a very friendly community feel, with much appreciation of the pharmacy's efforts. Apart from the usual prescription and health services, Doveton Pharmacy also offers Home Medication Reviews, blister packing of medications and is an agent for the National Diabetic Services Scheme (NDSS). Doveton Medical Centre is located at 80 Power Road in Doveton. For more information, phone 9792 4060.

Anti wrinkle injections: The role of anti wrinkle injections is to relax wrinkle causing muscles, thereby softening and preventing the development of expression lines, creating a smooth and rejuvenated appearance. Wrinkles often appear around the forehead and eyes when we smile or frown and these areas can be treated along with crow’s feet, using a well studied safe medication that suits all skin types, administered only by our qualified medical professional.

Skin Needling: Skin needling is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps stimulate collagen and elastin to promote smoother, healthier skin through a natural healing process. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and is designed to support skin regeneration to help conditions including acne scars, surgical scars/scarring, stretch marks, fine lines, pigmentation, enlarged pores, blackheads and mild textural irregularities and is suitable for treatment during the summer months.

Hallam Senior College aims to provide all students with the maximum opportunity for personal and academic growth in a supportive environment, one specially designed for students in their later years of secondary education. The school offers an extensive range of study options in Year 10, VCE, VET and VCAL that enable staff to personalise a student’s timetable through a focused program approach. The Year 10 program includes choices from over 30 electives, as well as specialist programs in sport, building and design, visual arts and STEM (science, engineering and mathematics). As Acting Principal David Caughey explained, students are at the centre of the school’s thinking, planning and actions. “We aim to ensure that we provide positive learning experiences for every student in a young adult environment,” he said.

“With highly experienced staff ensuring quality of delivery across all subjects, students are treated as young adults with staff-student relationships based on mutual respect, cooperation and a focus on the common goal learning. “In a young adult learning environment students are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their learning.” Mr Caughey said that the relationships forged with students and their families are critical elements of a student’s success at this important stage of their learning. “Hallam Senior College values relationships built on respect and responsibility where the relationships between people, learning and the environment frame our actions,” For more information about Hallam Senior College, phone 9703 1266 for more information or to book a tour of the College. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

SPORT

Awe-inspiring Octabello By Russell Bennett Noel 'King' Callow's spectacular star jump dismount said it all. His ride, a $17 outsider, had just stolen the City of Casey's showpiece race right from under the noses of the stars of the field. Octabello produced some real magic right when it was needed most to storm home to a scintillating win in Sunday's $350,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup. The Mick Price-trained four-year-old started at $17 but stormed home with the ever popular Callow on board to defeat the much more fancied Sully - a local hope - and Darren Weir's $1.80 favourite Furrion in third. Last year's winner, the Charlie Applebytrained Folkswood, was unable to replicate its 2017 performance - finishing a distant seventh. Callow's ride was almost timed to perfection as Octabello pipped Sully at the post. After the showpiece race, Mick Nolan from Price's stable praised Callow's ride - telling racing.com: "He lived up to his name there, didn't he - King Callow? "I was a little bit worried but when Furrion moved off the fence and wasn't going as good as we thought, and Octabello was travelling, he just needed a touch of luck here and he'd be right in the money. "I think only Noel Callow could've won on that hose." Nolan also spoke of just how far Octabello had come in preparation for the Cranbourne Cup. "He was very unlucky last start - he probably should have gone very close to winning if he had a bit of luck," he said.

"He is a progressive-type horse and we always had high hopes for him as a younger horse. "He's the sort of horse where the way he races he needs a little bit of luck, and once he gets it he's very hard to beat." The son of Pierro, Octabello was clearly the lowest-rated horse in the field and more than tripled his career earnings in nabbing the $210,000 first place cheque. "I wanted him to run at Caulfield on Wednesday," Callow told racing.com soon after his celebratory dismount. "He had a beautiful run behind the favourite (Furrion) - all I needed was something to happen. It didn't - I had to make something happen - (but) I got the choccies so all good." At the top of the straight, the biggest thing on Callow's mind was one simple word - patience. "I was just thinking that you've got to be patient, and just wait and go 'I know what I have under me, because I know what happened the other day at Caulfield'," he said. "I knew what he was going to do but I just had to wait for something to move, and it didn't so I just put my indicator on and tested the water and away we went." And as for the jubilant star jump in the mounting yard? "The star jump was alright, but the water tasted alright too," he said, before hilariously rattling off a few other occasions he'd celebrated in the same fashion. Earlier in the day, the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Runson took out the $100,000 Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic over 1000 metres with Stephen Baster on board.

New nest for the Eagles By Sports Editor Russell Bennett The nomads of the former South East Football Netball League finally have a home. On Tuesday night (October 16), the AFL Outer East commission voted to accept Cranbourne into the Outer East Football Netball league - ending months of uncertainty for the Eagles and their faithful. AFL Outer East region general manager Aaron Bailey praised the quality of Cranbourne's proposal as a strong one. "We looked into the rules and regulations around a Cranbourne application, and it had become clear to the commission that should they wish to knock back an application, that it'd have no grounds to do so and be unsuccessful if it went to appeal," Bailey said. "The commission felt Cranbourne had been through enough and wasn't comfortable in putting a club into recess." Bailey also spoke about the disruption that an application at such a late stage had caused. "They (the commission) were extremely disappointed that the matter had been put to them at such a late stage in the year," he said. "After going through a full review, it has caused significant disruption to a process that had been exhaustive and well-researched." The focus has now shifted to moving forward with the new Outer East Football Netball League, with Cranbourne on board. "We're keen to work with Cranbourne to make this the best fit for them and the Outer East competition," Bailey said. "One of the biggest aspects of our football review was to grow footy in the Casey and Cardinia regions, and we've already done that with Berwick Springs. We'll continue to look to develop new clubs in the Casey and Cardinia region." In 2019, Cranbourne will enter into a nineteam Premier competition. Division 1 will be

Cranbourne is headed to the Outer East Football Netball League from 2019. 183377 made up of eight teams, while Division 2 from this year's AFL Yarra Ranges competition will remain the same. The News understands that there is then the potential for a club to be promoted out of Division 2 for 2020. Meanwhile, the sour taste left in the mouths of the Cranbourne faithful hasn't gone unnoticed from those at AFL Outer East. "We share the widely-held position - outside of a select group within the MPNFL - that the MPNFL was the best fit for Cranbourne," Bailey said.

"After extensively looking at, and investigating, the best fit for all clubs, we felt Cranbourne's application to join the MPNFL was the best fit, and it appears to us that the best decision for football wasn't made. "However, we now firmly believe that an opportunity missed for the MPNFL is an opportunity gained for AFL Outer East. "We're really excited for what we can build through the south east region. "We'll look to build a really strong and vibrant three-division competition across the Yarra Ranges, Cardinia and Casey and we'll

continue to look to offer opportunities for clubs. As we've shown, we're open and willing to offer opportunities to clubs looking for divisional football." Seven of the eight former South East Football Netball League clubs have now found a home with AFL Outer East - Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham. Tooradin-Dalmore, meanwhile, is headed to the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition as part of AFL Gippsland.

Local soccer players in the Casey area will have more fields and facilities after it was announced that the State Government will provide $5 million in funding to help with the growing demand for soccer in the area. Sport Minister John Eren and Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced on Tuesday (16 October) that four soccer pitches and a new female-friendly pavilion will be developed at Casey Fields. Record numbers of males and females are participating in soccer in the Casey area and local clubs are struggling to keep up with the demand for pitches. This initiative will see the construction of one turf and three synthetic soccer pitches as part of the Casey Fields Regional Community Football Facilities project. Each field will include a coach's box, electronic scoreboard, fencing and competition standard lighting. The pitches will be available more often for community soccer clubs and the low maintenance synthetic pitches and can be used rain, hail or shine. "We're investing $5 million to enable Casey's passionate footballers to get out there and get active," Mr Eren said. "Sports clubs are the heart and soul of local communities and we're giving them the facilities they need to grow and welcome new members." In addition to the four pitches, a large pavilion will be developed with eight femalefriendly change rooms and umpire facilities,

accessible change facilities and public amenities, storage, first aid and community areas, as well as an undercover spectator area. A 450-space car park will also be developed to help manage the growing number of users. Work on the project is scheduled to begin shortly, with the four pitches and pavilion expected to be ready for play in early 2020. "This major development at Casey Fields will help address the shortfall of pitches in the surrounding area and give more locals the chance to play this great game," Mr Perera said. "The four floodlit pitches will significantly expand opportunities for local clubs to schedule training and matches." City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said council was thrilled it had been successful in securing the funding. "The City of Casey has more than 3400 registered soccer participants and thousands more engaged in schools, competitions and socially in parks across Casey and Victoria," he said. "Combined with neighbouring municipalities, Melbourne's south east boasts active grassroots football to a community of more than 245,000 including 22,000 registered participants across the catchment in 2017." Mr Eren and Mr Perera acknowledged the Casey City Council for its commitment and significant financial contribution to the dedicated soccer facility at Casey Fields. Thursday, 18 October, 2018
