Wave off raises a laugh The roar of motorcycles will engulf Cranbourne on Saturday 27 October as the community gears up for one of the City of Casey’s biggest annual events!

The Cranbourne GP Run is nearly here with thousands of people expected to turn out to wave-off the thousands of motorcyclists as they head off en-mass from High Street in Cranbourne to the 2018 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix.

Celebrity guest Arj Barker will head up in the cherry picker, accompanied by City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett, and host the wave-off at 10am.

Known as Australia’s adopted son of comedy, Arj is currently in Australia as a part of his brand-new 'We Need to Talk' tour and will be performing at Bunjil Place on Friday 26 October.

The Mayor said the event was one not to be missed with an electric atmosphere taking hold of Cranbourne.

“The annual GP Run is one of our most popular events and sees the community line High Street to witness thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts ride through Cranbourne headed for Phillip Island,” he said.

“While the main event is one to be remembered, there are also plenty of other attractions happening on the day.

“There will be market stalls, food and drink vans and workshops for the kids, which makes for a fantastic morning out for the entire family.”

Council will also be sending one lucky community member off to the official Grand Prix for an outstanding experience, which includes a double grandstand pass, paddock tour and pit lane walk.

FOCUS ON ... CRANBOURNE GP RUN

Traffic alert Traffic will be affected in Cranbourne from 6am until noon as roads are closed to cater for the thousands of motorcyclists who will converage on High Street.

Significant traffic management will be implemented on event day with installation of the traffic management plan on High Street commencing at 2am on Saturday 27 October.

This includes kerbside parking not being available along High Street between Stawell Street and Sladen Street.

From 7.30am to 11am the southbound carriageway of High Street (South Gippsland Hwy), between Stawell Street and Sladen Street, will be closed for the event. Through traffic will continue to operate in both directions on the northbound carriageway including during the wave-off.

Side streets entering High Street from the east (Stawell Street, Lyall Street, Bakewell Street and Childers Street) will be closed after the entry point to the car parks. Access to the car parking areas from these streets will still be possible.

Organisers advice that southbound traffic should use Clarendon Street to access Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre as they will

not be able to make any left or right turns on High Street between Stawell Street and Sladen Street.

Northbound traffic will not be able to make right-hand turns on High Street (South Gippsland Hwy) between Sladen Street and Stawell Street. Left turns for northbound traffic from High Street between Sladen Street and Stawell Street, will not be affected.

A bus stop will still be available on the northbound carriageway adjacent to Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre. A temporary bus stop will be provided for southbound bus services in Codrington Street (between Lyall St and Bakewell St) and all southbound bus services will use this temporary stop.

The existing pedestrian crossings on High Street will be operational and controlled by event staff.

Parking bans will also be in place in Stawell Street (between High Street and Codrington Street) to accommodate the event bikes and in Codrington Street (between Bakewell Street and Lyall Street) and the south side of Lyall Street (between Russell Street and Codrington Street) to accommodate the public transport detour for the duration of the event.

Swim school milestone On the same day as Cranbourne’s GP Run, Paul Sadler Swimland Narre Warren will celebrate 15 years of teaching children to swim safer.

The swim school will be celebrating this momentous occasion by hosting a fun-filled family friendly event on Saturday 27 October between 12noon and 4pm. There will be fun kid’s activities including face-painting, animal farms, trial swim lessons, demonstrations and a one-kilo-

metre swim event. All of the surrounding shops are taking part and offering giveaways and big discounts. The one-kilometre swim event will be hosted in the afternoon, which will allow people to watch and cheer on our children competing for their Swordy one-kilometre medal.

Tins rattle for a good cause The Casey Cardinia Foundation is this year’s GP Run charity partner.

The Casey Cardinia Foundation is a philanthropic community foundation, raising funds for local community groups throughout the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, with funds dispersed through an annual grants program.

Established in 2003, the foundation expanded in 2013 to include both the communities of Cardinia Shire and the City of Casey.

The foundation aims to support the social, community and physical development of the community.

Chairman Paul Thomas said the foundation was proud to again be chosen as the GP Run charity partner.

“The foundation assists many local notfor-profit organisations throughout the Casey Cardinia Region through a grants process,“ Mr Thomas said.

“This year the foundation has been able to fund 20 local organisations to support community projects addressing disadvantage, disability, older persons, youth and crisis in the Casey Cardinia Region."

Mr Thomas said the foundation needed volunteers to assist with coin collection for a couple of hours on Saturday 27 October from 8am. Volunteers will be provided with donation tins and visibility wear. If you can help please contact Carlos on admin@caseycardiniafoundation.org or call 0418 962 377.

Sarah’s set to sing the National Anthem and she said I could.”

Sarah is no stranger to performing the national anthem, having done so for a number of different events and performances throughout her time at Berwick’s Kambrya College.

Nowadays, however, fans of theatre and the performing arts can catch Sarah in performances such as ‘The Next Big Thing’ which is presented by the Windmill Theatre Company and performed at Bunjil Place.

“I’ve been having (signing) lessons for 11 years. From such a young age I’ve always wanted to sing and I’ve recently gotten into theatre

because I’ve always loved to dance and this has allowed me to combine my two hobbies,” Sarah said.

And while a professional career in the performing arts isn’t on the cards right now, she does believe it will always be a part of her life.

“I love performing, but realistically I want to do primary education and major in performing arts, and keep (performing) more of a hobby than a job.

“I’m currently doing my first year of studying a Bachelor of Education at Federation University in Berwick...I absolutely love it.”

A student of Narre Warren South’s Vocal Performance School, Sarah said she was thrilled to be considered for the duty.

“I’m currently singing at Vocal Performance School and I believe this opportunity came about when Wayne (Cr Wayne Smith) asked my teacher Louise (Berkelmans) if she had a student who would be able to sing the anthem

By Brendan Rees Racegoers enjoyed a day of fun and frivolity at the Cranbourne Cup on Sunday 14 October where the bottles fizzed and colourful frocks, suits and hats were out in force.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive said it was a glamorous day with the club experiencing one of the biggest crowds on record with more than 6500 people attending.

A new entertainment deck on the grandstand created a new experience for people to witness the pulsating action on the track while children kept occupied with a variety of activities including pony rides.

Major roads fix A re-elected Labor Government will also invest $54.3 million to remove two congested roundabouts at Ballarto Road and Cranbourne-Frankston Road on the Western Port Highway and replace them with new traffic lights.

Planning and pre-construction work on both projects will begin in 2019, with major works kickstarting in 2020. Upgrades to the Western Port Highway will be finished by 2022, while Hall Road will be complete by 2023.

The announcement comes as the State Government has made massive investments to ease local congestion, including widening Thompsons Road with more than 10 kilometres of new lanes, the removal of the level crossing near Merinda Park Station, duplicating Lathams Road and building the Mordialloc Freeway.

Premier Daniel Andrews said fixing the notorious bottlenecks "will end that constant frustration that local families know all too well."

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said: "When it comes to delivering an upgraded Hall Road and Western Port Highway, only Labor has the track-record that locals can rely on."

Shadow Minister for Roads, David Hodgett said Daniel Andrews had "lost control" of traffic congestion.

"While Daniel Andrews want to build more traffic lights, the Liberal Nationals want to remove them and create free flowing intersections," he said.

"Only the Liberal Nationals have a plan to remove 55 of Melbourne and Geelong's most congested intersections including at Hall Road and Western Port Hwy, Thompsons Road and Western Port Hwy and Frankston-Dandenong Road and Thompsons Road.

"The choice is clear, out of control traffic congestion and more time stuck at traffic lights under Daniel Andrews, or a Matthew Guy government that will take back control and get Victoria moving," Mr Hodgett said.

Locals will benefit from a safer and less congested Hall Road and Western Port Highway, with two new major upgrades if the Andrews Labor Government is re-elected.

The $169 million Hall Road investment will see major improvements for local families, including duplicating 5.2 kilometres from McCormicks Road to Cranbourne-Frankston Road, doubling the existing two lanes to four.

The project will also see construction of new traffic lights at the intersections of McCormicks Road, Taylors Road, Western Port Highway and Evans Road, and an upgrade of the intersection at Cranbourne-Frankston Road, helping to address what the Frankston Standard Leader has dubbed a "notorious bottleneck".

Benefiting local pedestrians and cyclists, the investment will also see new shared paths on both sides of Hall Road, as well as the installation of new street lighting, safety barriers, road signage and landscaping.

With Helen Bell, president of the Cranbourne U3A

What is something people don't know about you?

I was brought up in Glen Iris in a very active family. All involved in scouting, I was a CubLleader for many years and still involved with the Whitehorse District interviewing new leaders and advising them of all the training requirements for their individual roles within the Scouting movement.

What is your most memorable moment?

Becoming president of U3A recently. I enjoy the company of the people there and admire the brilliant work that many of our members produce. Also my 50th wedding anniversary last year was pretty special.

How long have you been with Cranbourne U3A and what services does the group offer?

I have been at Cranbourne U3A for about five years now, I joined when I retired from my job as a school administrator - worked in schools for all my working life and loved meeting all the families and have lots of happy memories.

Have you got any activities or events coming up you would like to encourage people to attend?

We are having an open day on Friday 19 October at our rooms at the back of the Library building - entry through the Casey Radio entrance. We will have tutors demonstrating their classes - many crafty classes, music as well, singing and guitar, chess and fishing and table tennis, calligraphy, art (both general painting and portraiture), sewing and knitting and Mahjong and Bridge classes too.

What is your favourite movie?

Very silly but I always get a laugh out of the Home Alone series, even when I had broken ribs - ouch that hurt a lot.

If you were PM for a day, what would you do?

I would try to get a better deal for older people particularly in aged care facilities and more money for pensioners and the disabled.

At school I......

I was your average student - loved English, art and crafty subjects, Not great in the sporting arena as I was and still am asthmatic.

Which six dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner?

Probably just the family as we all love to get together and have a laugh. Could name Prince Harry (but he would be too busy), Jeff Kennett (talk about Hawthorn Football Club), we are all mad footy fans, my mother - she would love to spend time with the great-grandchildren; she did not live to see them but they are gorgeous.

Favourite holiday spot in Australia?

Most recently we loved staying in Tasmania at Grindlewald. Just out of Launceston - we spent a lovely time there at a home with gorgeous gardens. A lovely family time, my daughter had a graduation ceremony from University of Tasmania. Very special time.

What's your favourite book?

As I am an avid reader. Recently read Di Morrissey's "The Islands" and loved that - beautiful to read about such a lovely place as I was there many years ago when I travelled all around the world. In my early twenties when I spent a year in England working. Travelled each way by ship as you did in those days. Nowadays a quick flight and you are anywhere you like within a day or two.

Police swoop on bikies A Hampton Park woman is one of seven people arrested and charged as part of an ongoing investigation into an outlaw motorcycle club.

Detectives from Echo Taskforce with the assistance of State Anti-Gangs Division, the K9 Unit and uniform police, executed 12 search warrants on Thursday 11 October.

The warrants were executed in Hampton Park, Cranbourne West, Glenroy, Carrum Downs, Frankston, Mickleham, Highett, and Truganina, It follows a proactive investigation into the Finks OMCG, relating to drug trafficking, an alleged aggravated burglary in Hampton Park on 9 September and an affray in Kew on 13 July.

By Brendan Rees City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett has declared a "community led fight" to extend the Cranbourne rail line to Clyde "won't stop" until the November state election.

More than 30 residents rallied with Casey councillors at Cranbourne East on Saturday 14 October to celebrate their successful advocacy campaign towards extending the Cranbourne rail line.

It comes as both major parties have committed substantial funds towards planning, extending and duplicating the Cranbourne Rail, however Cr Ablett said until residents "see shovels in the ground," they won't stop advocating.

"We still have a long way to go to ensure the priority projects that form the Commit to Casey campaign come to fruition, but we are thrilled with our progress so far," Cr Ablett said.

Council staff were also in attendance on Saturday, engaging with residents to get their aspirations for the Casey Complex Precinct, which will also be home to a future Cranbourne East railway station.

Cr Ablett said it is only fair that the Casey community were catered with the transport infrastructure required to meet the huge population growth being experienced in the area.

"Events such as these continue to demonstrate our commitment and dedication to ensuring that the City of Casey isn't left behind any longer; and that we are delivered with the roads and public transport we need to ease the congestion that Casey faces," he said.

Jen Marsh of Cranbourne said public transport was vital, particularly for the ageing population who may not have a car.

"Maybe one day I won't be able to drive and I'd like to be able to get up to the shopping centre," she said.

"Until we know who is actually in power we're not sure exactly what we're going to get yet.

"We've got lots of promises. I don't think it should take that damn long."

Member for Bass Brian Paynter, who also attended the rally, said he was impressed with City of Casey's advocacy work.

"I think they're really showing some leadership, I take my hat off to them I think it's fabulous," he said.

"Labor has been in government for 15 of the last 19 years and they've completely ignored the area, everybody knew it was a growth corridor ... still they've done nothing."

In January, the City of Casey launched its biggest ever advocacy campaign, calling on the State Government and Opposition to Commit to Casey, fix the region's roads and extend Cranbourne Rail.

A man in his forties suffered a blow to his head following a home invasion in Hampton Park on Saturday 13 October.

Investigators have been told two intruders forced entry to the Tiarne Crescent property about 5.15am.

It's alleged the man, who was home at the time, confronted the intruders who made demands for the victim's car keys.

Police say a scuffle took place between the victim and one of the offenders and the victim was hit back of the head with an object.

"He sustained minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene," police spokesman Alistair Parsons said.

A woman and four children who were home at the time were not physically injured.

The intruders, perceived to be African in appearance fled on foot.

Police are investigating the aggravated burglary.

Member for Gembrook Brad Battin said families had reason to feel unsafe in their own home with Premier Daniel Andrews having "lost control" of crime in the south east, with home invasions up 43 per cent in Victoria.

"Labor don't care about Casey communities; for the last 12 years no Victorian Labor MP has lived locally, and to make it worse they have endorsed a union official from St Kilda to represent the area," he said.

"Casey deserves better, it is time to take back control of crime and make Victoria safe."

Cash in Mick's honour A project designed to inspire African Australians through the game of basketball has taken out the Casey Cardinia Foundation's illustrious Mick Morland Memorial Grant.

The award, named after the devoted City of Casey councillor, is considered one of the group's marquee acknowledgements.

It comes as the region's leading philanthropic association fundraised more than $80,000 for various community groups during a dinner at the Cardinia Cultural Centre on Friday, 12 October.

The foundation set a record total in recent years, providing 20 local organisations a helping hand.

More than 310 people attended the gala, participating in an action-packed night of live auctions, entertainment and other fundraising activities.

Foundation chairperson Paul Thomas revealed the charity association has now donated more than $630,000 worth of grants to the community.

"I am proud to say that this year has been a record year for the Foundation with more funds being raised, more funds into corpus and more organisations benefiting from our grants than ever before," Mr Thomas said.

"The success of the evening is due to the

incredible generosity of the individuals and business who care about our community."

Mr Thomas also acknowledged the growing needs of the community.

"The Foundation first began in 2003 and in those 15 years there has been more than 900,000 people move into the area, an average of 60,000 every year." Mr Thomas said.

"And as such we had a record 67 applications received from local community groups this year, an indication of the need but also the relevance of the Foundation."

The foundation aims to support the social, community and general welfare of those living in the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire.

It provides grants to projects that support the growing needs of its communities.

Some of the noteworthy initiatives the group has provided funding for include the Lakeside Residents Group's tireless hard work to keep Cardinia's Australia Day event free, installing defibrillators at the Kooweerup Over 60s Cricket Club and Beaconsfield Neighbourhood Centre and encouraging African Australians with a passion for basketball to participate in local competitions.

Guests danced to the sounds of the Baker Boys Band while MC Andy Reid provided thorough entertainment for those in attendance.

Riding club at risk

By Brendan Rees A not-for-profit equine school in Clyde North is at risk of closing its doors if they are unable to find a solution to lowering its rates.

Oakwood Riding School, which was founded in 1958, is struggling to keep up with its skyrocketing council rate bills as it falls within the Urban Growth Zone.

According to the school's facility manager Sharyn Wyatt, if council rates continued to rise "the school's life will be compromised."

"Of course we can pass on costs to clients but this would then make riding unavailable to many," she said.

Ms Wyatt said ideally the school would like to be taken out of the urban growth zone and be able to continue to provide "great sporting facilities in Casey at a reasonable cost."

"Horse riding has been proven to be an excellent all over sport physically and mentally.

It is one of the few disciplines where men and women can compete equally which we feel is very important," she said.

Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett visited the school on Tuesday 9 October, pledging the council's support to keep the school alive.

"They've found themselves in a situation

"We want to do is solve the issue by getting their rates down by asking the Minister and Victoria Planning Authority to simply just change the zoning to maintain the participating and growth of our equine industry."

"It does need to be changed otherwise it won't survive so that's the bottom line," he added. "It's a fantastic place - a lot of volunteers put in their time."

Cr Ablett said had council had not provided a 60 per cent discount on the school's current

$32,000 rate bill, they would've been forced to "shut up shop."

"In the long term the only answer for them to survive is to be rezoned to something else that enables them to survive and keep running the great business they run," he said.

"The location would be exactly the same but they would be zoned green wedge or special use zone or something like."

Cr Ablett added the school had a "great set up," and it would be a "shame to see them go."

"The equine industry is our biggest industry sitting alongside building roads and houses at the moment."

The school moved from Narre Warren to Clyde North about 10 years ago which was also due to rising costs in the urban growth zone.

Meanwhile, Ms Wyatt says: "We don't want to do this again as our clients are from the immediate area," She said the school had great coaches with many of their riders going on to be top level competitors in their field.

Ms Wyatt said the school plans to "expand the school groups; encourage ladies social riding groups to take an active role in life; to have a seniors activity during seniors month October 2019."

Big gift looks after the kids

By Brendan Rees Balla Balla Community Centre has donated a generous $10,000 to the Aiding Casey Education (ACE) Foundation to assist primary school students in the Cranbourne area.

The centre's president Andy Reid, centre manager Maree Cullinan and team members Robin Dzedins and Dianne Wilson presented the cheque on Wednesday 10 October.

ACE administrator Teresa Muratore thanked the Balla Balla Community Centre for their support and providing "positive community outcomes and opportunities."

"The vision of the ACE Foundation is to assist children in the City of Casey overcome challenges in their educational pursuits," she said.

The foundation organises vision assessments for primary school students and pays for glasses if the children require them.

More than 640 pairs of glasses have been provided to primary school students during the past 12 months.

"There is no cost to the children or their families," added Ms Muratore.

White line fever A Cranbourne man, who was slapped with a parking fine at Merinda Park train station, says the State Government is "running a scam to make money."

Pramit Paweja was outraged to cop two $32 parking tickets within a week in May by the Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DECDJTR) because he was not in a "designated parking bay."

However, Mr Paweja says he was wrongly issued the tickets as some of the parking bays within the Merinda station car park "were altered" due to the recent level crossing removal and Thompson Road duplication works.

According to Mr Paweja his car was parked within the marked lines: "You can see the white

He asked the Department to review his tickets, arguing "there is no indication, signs or markings to indicate clearly and satisfactorily that it was not a parking bay."

"The Department decided to uphold their decision to serve me the infringement."

Mr Paweja sought legal advice where he was told he had a "strong argument" of challenging the tickets in court.

But "due to the low financial value of the fine it was recommended to pay the infringement," he said.

Mr Paweja says the experience has left him feeling "empty" and "helpless," at the "peril of the DECDJT." Mr Paweja approached the office of Cranbourne MP Jude Perera who has since written to the Department asking for "better signage" at Merinda Park station.

‘Erratic’ man bashes cop and commuter

By Cam Lucadou-Wells An "erratic" and "violent" man has kicked in a shop window, punched a bus passenger 11 times in the head and attacked a police officer in separate incidents, a court has heard.

Police approached John Wotherspoon in response to reports of an erratically-acting man possibly armed with a knife near Cranbourne railway station early on 23 March.

Wotherspoon, who was seen by running around in circles in the bus area, forcibly pushed against the police car's driver-side door to prevent an officer from getting out.

He fled, pursued by a police officer on foot while another tried to cut him off in the car.

When the latter police member stepped out of the car, she was punched by Wotherspoon to the side of her face.

Wotherspoon was eventually restrained by both officers on the ground, while he "violently

lashed out".

The assaulted officer was treated by paramedics.

Wotherspoon also faced charges due to repeatedly bashing a 'Good Samaritan' aboard a Dandenong-Doveton bus on 13 August.

The victim had stepped in when he saw Wotherspoon yelling into an elderly man's face at close range.

In order to protect the senior man, the victim grabbed the accused around the shoulders.

Wotherspoon struck the victim 11 times to the face and head, resulting in a severely bleeding nose.

The accused then dragged him to the ground, ripping a centimetre of hair from his scalp.

Several passengers eventually overpowered Wotherspoon until police arrived.

He also pleaded guilty to kicking in a $2500 shop window of a Dandenong pawn shop on 4 August. He had been enraged after a passer-by

refused his plea for money.

Wotherspoon was well known to the court as well as frequently admitted to Dandenong Hospital's psychiatric unit, his lawyer Farah Banihali said.

At the time of offending, he had been unmedicated with his community treatment order revoked, the court was told.

Upon Wotherspoon's release from custody, he was set to be admitted as a hospital inpatient, Ms Banihali said.

He would struggle to comply with a community corrections order, she said.

Magistrate Doug Bolster noted that Wotherspoon's "very serious" mental health issues could be treated in jail.

Wotherspoon was jailed for six months, including 63 days in pre-sentence detention.

He was ordered to repay $2500 for the broken shop window, and to provide a DNA sample to police.

Sikh Games on a winner, say the Liberals

By Brendan Rees The State Liberals have pledged to contribute $155,000 to a premier sporting and cultural event of the Australian Sikh community which Cranbourne will host in 2019.

Opposition Leader Matthew Guy joined members of the Sikh community and Casey councillors at Casey Fields on Friday 12 October to make the funding announcement which will assist with the staging of the 32nd Annual Australian Sikh Games.

The funding package would enable the Sikh community in Victoria to hold the Games primarily at the multi-sport complex at Casey Fields in Cranbourne, close to where so many of the Indian community call home.

It is expected that over 3,000 athletes will participate in the games, in 14 different sports with 90,000 spectators cheering them on.

It comes as the Liberals attempt to strengthen ties with the Indian community with Mr Guy also promising in August to build a $5 million Indian Community Precinct in Cranbourne.

Mr Guy said the Sikh community was "a large and vibrant part of Victoria's multicultural community."

"The Australian Sikh Games are an important part of the community's calendar and I wish all competitors the best of luck."

Casey Council Deputy Mayor Amanda Stapledon welcomed the announcement, saying

it showed "the esteem that the Sikh Community are held in."

"It recognises the benefits that the Sikh games will bring to the Casey Region both in economic, tourism/visibility and relationships and strengthens the support that council committed to recently, ensuring the games are a great success this year and in years to come," she said.

Last month, Minister for Sport John Eren joined Dalvinder Garcha, president of the Games Organising Committee at Casey Stadium to officially launch the countdown to the event. Mr Eren also announced a $100,000 events package for the Sikh Games, along with a $50,000 contribution from Casey Council.

Free TAFE filling the gap TAFE campuses across Victoria, including Chisholm, will help to train and educate a skilled workforce to underpin growing industries, through the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative.

For Rachael Delaney, this represents the chance to study and gain valuable qualifications where the demand for skilled workers is strongest in local industries.

Through Free TAFE, the Victorian Government will cover tuition fees for 30 priority TAFE courses and 20 pre-apprenticeship courses from 1 January 2019 for eligible students.

Ms Delaney plans to enrol in the Diploma of Nursing.

Ms Delaney always had a strong interest in health and nursing, but having left school at 15 years of age felt that it was not achievable.

Course costs were also a major concern.

“I’ve been hairdressing for 19 years. I’ve always seemed to have had at least two jobs at a time and have even juggled three at a time to provide for my family,“ she said.

TAFE has allowed Ms Delaney to pursue nursing, which is not only an interest but also pays much better, meaning that she won’t have to work multiple jobs. Course costs are considerable and she agrees that Free TAFE makes an education accessible.

Chisholm is now taking enrolments for Free

TAFE courses that begin in 2019.

Chisholm is offering most of the courses on the Free TAFE list. These include Community Services, Justice, Accounting and Bookkeeping, Disability, Mental Health, Youth Work, Cyber Security, Plumbing, as well as Building and Construction.

Dreaming of a good sleep St John of God Berwick Hospital has joined forces with the Sleep and Respiratory Group to become experts in diagnosing and treating sleep and respiratory disorders for the tired people of Melbourne's south east.

This month a new sleep unit at St John of God Berwick Hospital's Kangan Drive location opened to help patients tackle sleepiness, snoring, insomnia, nocturia, unexplained weight gain, poor sleep quality, general sleep concerns and most importantly, angry bed partners.

A sleep expert at St John of God Berwick Hospital said that over 50 percent of Australia adults having some kind medical issue that impacts on their sleep.

"Alarmingly, compared to the rest of the world, Australian adults are among the most likely to use prescription sleep drugs to aid sleep," they said.

"But with an experienced team of sleep scientists led by Katia Perceros available, patients no longer have to simply dream of getting a good night's sleep."

With this new service, fully trained and accredited physicians will provide a comprehensive assessment and can promptly diagnose and establish an appropriate treatment pathway for patients. Furthermore, patients in Melbourne's south east no longer have to travel far to access this much needed local service.

A sleep study is a comprehensive recording of a number of different variables including heart rate, brain wave activity, eye movements,

While sleep studies can be funded by private health insurance, the service is also available to self-funded patients and can be accessed through a referral from a GP. Demystifying vasectomy Not many people are aware that November 14 is this year’s World Vasectomy Day. The event started in 2012 in Australia and has been gathering pace ever since.

Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic said that the idea behind the day is to demystify vasectomy and encourage men to come forward "for what is the simplest and safest form of contraception."

“A lot of rubbish is written and spoken about vasectomy,” Mr McCahy said.

“All sorts of techniques are described such as ‘no scalpel’, ‘open-ended’ and ‘minimallyinvasive’. It does not really matter which technique is used as long as it is effective with very few complications.

“As with most operative procedures, it is better to see someone who is experienced and can deal with any problems that arise. I would routinely advise any patient to avoid a general anaesthetic if it is possible as recovery is much quicker, so I perform the majority of my vasectomies with local anaesthetic.”

Mr McCahy said that men should be aware that the procedure is irreversible and that additional contraception is required for a few months (until the semen is clear of sperm).

“There is a very small failure rate (much lower than the pill) and there is a small risk of chronic testicular pains which can be tricky to treat,” Mr McCahy said.

“Don’t let that put you off and think about joining the thousands of men who are taking the snip.”

Alkira's 10th birthday bash Mum Louise with 16 month old Lily. 186269

By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne North school has celebrated its 10th birthday with a special cake and some magical tricks.

Alkira Secondary College celebrated the milestone on Thursday 11 October.

The school has grown to 1165 students and emerged as an active member of the Casey network of schools.

Organiser Nicole Scott hailed the day as a success with students also enjoying an extended lunchtime in sunny conditions.

"It was one of my best days at high school," Year 12 student Sam said.

Activities started with the cutting of the cake by current principal John Shaw and founding principal Ian McKenzie.

"This was followed by inflatable skill testers on the oval, roving performers with a magician and balloon artist and food of sausages, popcorn and lollies," Ms Scott said.

Year 9 student Shea said she had "so much fun."

"The weather was perfect with great entertainment," Shea said.

"I enjoyed watching the magician and the balloon lady making wonderful creations.

The sausages and popcorn were delicious and watching the staff sing happy birthday and cut the cake, made for a special event".

Teacher Caitlin Tredinnick said: "A fantastic effort by all to celebrate our school".

Alkira Secondary College 10 Year celebrations will continue its birthday celebrations on the 23 November with an assembly at 2pm, followed by an open night from 4-6pm.

A sausage sizzle was also held and a delicious menu healthy menu cooked by the centre's chef Satish.

All proceeds went towards Back Pack 4 Kids Victoria.

Centre Manager Kylie Bartlett said event encouraged new families "get a feel of the environment and what Aspire Early Education is about."

"Our setting fosters community engagement and develops the children's sense of well-being, where they are encouraged to explore every aspect of their world," she said.

"Families were extremely impressed with the event and mostly the good weather we were blessed with," she said. "Families couldn't stop talking about the food on our menu."

Sparkling day at the races

By Brendan Rees Styled-up racegoers were treated to a spectacular day at the Cranbourne Cup with a burst of sunshine attracting crowds of more than 6,500 people on Sunday 14 October.

Champagne flowed while bright, bold pops of colour and standout head wear took centre stage at Cranbourne's biggest race day of the year.

There was entertainment for the whole family, including live music and a free Minions dance party for the kids.

Children were also spoiled with face painting, pony rides and a showcase of native animals from Animals of Oz. The new entertainment deck area on the ground floor level of the existing grandstand was officially opened, which provides additional viewing and entertainment space for racing and community events.

Anne Kelly of Beaconsfield was crowned Lady of the Day with her beautiful fuchsia pink silk dress.

Ms Kelly regularly attends the Cranbourne races and said this year's win on the fashion stage came as a surprise.

"There was a lot of girls that looked lovely especially in both sections they looked fantastic," adding "It would've been hard for the judges."

"I don't go in it all the time but I love my fashion - I enjoy the races," she added.

"I ended up winning a $1000 Flight Centre voucher and I got a beautiful bracelet from South Gippsland Jewellers."

Danny Archer had the pleasure of taking out the Gent of the Day in the show-stopping fashions on the field while his partner Peta Bell also won the Young Lady of the Day award.

Mr Archer wore a navy suit with a contrasting waistcoat, orange checked shirt, and dark orange tie with a blue pattern as well as orange accessories.

"I won it last year as well so two-for-two at Cranbourne," he said.

Cranbourne Turf Club chief executive Neil Bainbridge was delighted with the race day, saying "It was probably the best day's crowd we've ever had."

"It was fantastic; there were lots of visual changes to improve the race day experience for all our customers," he said.

"We've just installed a $170,000 PA system upgrade so that was fantastic on the course as well" He said it was a "cracking day" and great to see some local horse owners to "share in riches of the Cranbourne Cup day" "It would've been nice for the local Cranbourne horse Sully that led all the way (in the Cranbourne Cup) but just lost by a nose."

He said the club was excited to be hosting the $200,000 Casey Cup on Sunday 21 October.

Awe-inspiring Octabello

His ride, a $17 outsider, had just stolen the City of Casey's showpiece race right from under the noses of the stars of the field.

Octabello produced some real magic right when it was needed most to storm home to a scintillating win in Sunday's $350,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup. The Mick Price-trained four-year-old started at $17 but stormed home with the ever popular Callow on board to defeat the much more fancied Sully - a local hope - and Darren Weir's $1.80 favourite Furrion in third.

Last year's winner, the Charlie Applebytrained Folkswood, was unable to replicate its 2017 performance - finishing a distant seventh.

Callow's ride was almost timed to perfection as Octabello pipped Sully at the post.

After the showpiece race, Mick Nolan from Price's stable praised Callow's ride - telling racing.com: "He lived up to his name there, didn't he - King Callow?

"I was a little bit worried but when Furrion moved off the fence and wasn't going as good as we thought, and Octabello was travelling, he just needed a touch of luck here and he'd be right in the money.

"I think only Noel Callow could've won on that hose."

Nolan also spoke of just how far Octabello had come in preparation for the Cranbourne Cup. "He was very unlucky last start - he probably should have gone very close to winning if he had a bit of luck," he said.

"He is a progressive-type horse and we always had high hopes for him as a younger horse.

"He's the sort of horse where the way he races he needs a little bit of luck, and once he gets it he's very hard to beat."

The son of Pierro, Octabello was clearly the lowest-rated horse in the field and more than tripled his career earnings in nabbing the $210,000 first place cheque.

"I wanted him to run at Caulfield on Wednesday," Callow told racing.com soon after his celebratory dismount.

"He had a beautiful run behind the favourite (Furrion) - all I needed was something to happen. It didn't - I had to make something happen - (but) I got the choccies so all good."

At the top of the straight, the biggest thing on Callow's mind was one simple word - patience.

"I was just thinking that you've got to be patient, and just wait and go 'I know what I have under me, because I know what happened the other day at Caulfield'," he said.

"I knew what he was going to do but I just had to wait for something to move, and it didn't so I just put my indicator on and tested the water and away we went."

And as for the jubilant star jump in the mounting yard?

"The star jump was alright, but the water tasted alright too," he said, before hilariously rattling off a few other occasions he'd celebrated in the same fashion.

Earlier in the day, the Leon and Troy Corstens-trained Runson took out the $100,000 Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic over 1000 metres with Stephen Baster on board.

On Tuesday night (October 16), the AFL Outer East commission voted to accept Cranbourne into the Outer East Football Netball league - ending months of uncertainty for the Eagles and their faithful.

AFL Outer East region general manager Aaron Bailey praised the quality of Cranbourne's proposal as a strong one.

"We looked into the rules and regulations around a Cranbourne application, and it had become clear to the commission that should they wish to knock back an application, that it'd have no grounds to do so and be unsuccessful if it went to appeal," Bailey said.

"The commission felt Cranbourne had been through enough and wasn't comfortable in putting a club into recess."

Bailey also spoke about the disruption that an application at such a late stage had caused.

"They (the commission) were extremely disappointed that the matter had been put to them at such a late stage in the year," he said.

"After going through a full review, it has caused significant disruption to a process that had been exhaustive and well-researched."

The focus has now shifted to moving forward with the new Outer East Football Netball League, with Cranbourne on board.

"We're keen to work with Cranbourne to make this the best fit for them and the Outer East competition," Bailey said.

"One of the biggest aspects of our football review was to grow footy in the Casey and Cardinia regions, and we've already done that with Berwick Springs. We'll continue to look to develop new clubs in the Casey and Cardinia region."

In 2019, Cranbourne will enter into a nineteam Premier competition. Division 1 will be

Cranbourne is headed to the Outer East Football Netball League from 2019. 183377 made up of eight teams, while Division 2 from this year's AFL Yarra Ranges competition will remain the same.

The News understands that there is then the potential for a club to be promoted out of Division 2 for 2020.

Meanwhile, the sour taste left in the mouths of the Cranbourne faithful hasn't gone unnoticed from those at AFL Outer East.

"We share the widely-held position - outside of a select group within the MPNFL - that the MPNFL was the best fit for Cranbourne," Bailey said.

"After extensively looking at, and investigating, the best fit for all clubs, we felt Cranbourne's application to join the MPNFL was the best fit, and it appears to us that the best decision for football wasn't made.

"However, we now firmly believe that an opportunity missed for the MPNFL is an opportunity gained for AFL Outer East.

"We're really excited for what we can build through the south east region.

"We'll look to build a really strong and vibrant three-division competition across the Yarra Ranges, Cardinia and Casey and we'll

continue to look to offer opportunities for clubs. As we've shown, we're open and willing to offer opportunities to clubs looking for divisional football."

Seven of the eight former South East Football Netball League clubs have now found a home with AFL Outer East - Beaconsfield, Berwick, Cranbourne, Doveton, Narre Warren, Officer and Pakenham. Tooradin-Dalmore, meanwhile, is headed to the West Gippsland Football Netball Competition as part of AFL Gippsland.

Local soccer players in the Casey area will have more fields and facilities after it was announced that the State Government will provide $5 million in funding to help with the growing demand for soccer in the area.

Sport Minister John Eren and Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced on Tuesday (16 October) that four soccer pitches and a new female-friendly pavilion will be developed at Casey Fields.

Record numbers of males and females are participating in soccer in the Casey area and local clubs are struggling to keep up with the demand for pitches. This initiative will see the construction of one turf and three synthetic soccer pitches as part of the Casey Fields Regional Community Football Facilities project.

Each field will include a coach's box, electronic scoreboard, fencing and competition standard lighting. The pitches will be available more often for community soccer clubs and the low maintenance synthetic pitches and can be used rain, hail or shine.

"We're investing $5 million to enable Casey's passionate footballers to get out there and get active," Mr Eren said.

"Sports clubs are the heart and soul of local communities and we're giving them the facilities they need to grow and welcome new members."

In addition to the four pitches, a large pavilion will be developed with eight femalefriendly change rooms and umpire facilities,

accessible change facilities and public amenities, storage, first aid and community areas, as well as an undercover spectator area.

A 450-space car park will also be developed to help manage the growing number of users.

Work on the project is scheduled to begin shortly, with the four pitches and pavilion expected to be ready for play in early 2020.

"This major development at Casey Fields will help address the shortfall of pitches in the surrounding area and give more locals the chance to play this great game," Mr Perera said.

"The four floodlit pitches will significantly expand opportunities for local clubs to schedule training and matches."

City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett said council was thrilled it had been successful in securing the funding.

"The City of Casey has more than 3400 registered soccer participants and thousands more engaged in schools, competitions and socially in parks across Casey and Victoria," he said.

"Combined with neighbouring municipalities, Melbourne's south east boasts active grassroots football to a community of more than 245,000 including 22,000 registered participants across the catchment in 2017."

Mr Eren and Mr Perera acknowledged the Casey City Council for its commitment and significant financial contribution to the dedicated soccer facility at Casey Fields.

Ballal’s stunner seals it

It seemed like a routine win for Berwick was on the cards.

Something stunning would've needed to happen for the North Dandenong to recover from 4/68 to chase down the Bears' 250 in their own backyard in Turf 1 action on Saturday.

Enter Akshay Ballal (110), the Maroon import with a point to prove.

In an exquisite knock that not only resulted in a century on debut for the club and in DDCA Turf 1 cricket, he secured a win from the clouds for his side in an incredible, breathtaking knock that actually ended in controversy.

When Muharjithan Thedchanamoorthy was dismissed, the scores were tied with the Maroons finishing on 250, but on a recount after the scorebooks didn't add up, found that the visitors actually won, scoring 253.

But it may have not come to this had the Bears not declared with three wickets in hand and with eight overs left on day one, in a puzzling tactical move that ultimately brought about their downfall.

With Brendan Rose set on 74, the Bears could have easily put another 40 or 50 runs on the board, putting the result beyond doubt. But the eagerness of the Bears to take late wickets gave the Maroons a sniff, and Ballal delivered.

It's a massive result in the opening round of a long season, and one that could be a catalyst for the revival of the Maroons.

Buckley Ridges, meanwhile, made their run chase against St Mary's look almost easy at times down at Park Oval.

Chasing an imposing 284 for victory, champion opener Daniel 'DJ' Watson (82 off 62 balls) completely blitzed the Saints, belting six sixes and seven boundaries in an ominous, almost routine standard setter from the Bucks gun.

DJ - the most destructive batsman in the DDCA - picked up where he left off in his brilliant 2017/18 season, putting on 122 runs for the opening wicket with reliable batsman Jayson Hobbs, who provided the perfect foil for Watson.

Hobbs continued to bat and bat, using his class and elegant stroke play to keep the scoreboard ticking over, compiling crucial partnerships with Susa Pradeep (26) and Greg Todd (28), and eventually raised his bat for a sublime century, finishing 116 not out as the Bucks crossed the total with five wickets left and in just 65 overs.

Down at Alex Nelson Reserve, a spin masterclass by Springvale South saw the Bloods hold off a brave Mordialloc.

TURF 1-3 REVIEW - ROUND 1 (DAY TWO)

Brendan Morris (95) and Damith Mapa Ralage (50) were simply outstanding, piling on over 100 runs to get the Bloodhounds into a position for a potential win.

Morris in particularly, is beginning to make his mark on the competition, and after his breakthrough century last season, is set for a big season for the reigning premiers.

Champion skipper Craig Slocombe stepped up in a stunning spell after the break, trapping Mapa Ralage LBW, and then denying Morris a much-deserved century after a Dylan Quirk catch.

Slocombe didn't stop there, once again rapping the pads of Daniel Fuller without troubling the scorers, finishing with the mindboggling figures of 5/18 off 17 overs, a spell of bowling that included 10 maidens.

Slocombe was brilliantly supported by spinning duo Malinga Bandara (3/65), Jarryd Straker (2/25) and ensured the visitors would lose their last seven wickets for just 41 runs, in a wonderful pressure performance.

And in the final game, Heinz Southern Districts lost to Hallam Kalora Park at Reedy Reserve, avoiding outright as the Hawks started the year with a bang.

Meanwhile, in Turf 2, Parkmore Pirates held off a plucky Dandenong West.

The Pirates made the most of the conditions on day one, notching up 8/309 and having the home side 1/48 at stumps, but the Westers fought hard to even up the game when play resumed on Saturday.

Skipper Matt Collett (45) and veteran Peter Atkinson (70) started brightly to see the score skip out to 1/83, but a double strike - that of Collett to spinner Amal Athulathmudali (3/56) and Karthik Nadadur - put the Westers on the back foot at 3/88.

Seamer Niranjen Kumar (4/52) made life difficult for the home side, picking apart the middle order, but Atkinson stood tall amongst the pressure to fight his way to a half century.

Sidharth Nadadur (43) kept fighting, ensuring the Pirates couldn't grab the points without a scrap, combining with Atkinson for a gritty 87 run partnership, but the wicket of the veteran for 70 brought about the collapse of the tail, with recruit Ammar Bajwa (2/23) help-

ing the Pirates finally end them on 223.

Down at Souter Oval, meanwhile, Cranbourne fought valiantly on day two to avoid an outright loss to Dingley.

With the Dingoes wrapping up the points on day one after declaring on 103 in response to the Eagles' first innings score of 60, the Eagles went back to the crease at 1/19, determined to fight out the game.

Captain-coach Matt Blackman (27) and Martin Kelly (25) worked hard to build a partnership in the early stages, before Lucas Ligt's excellent 70, showcasing his class, and a handy 34 not out to Breadyn Jansz helped the Eagles end the day on 8/202.

Narre South also picked up a barnstorming win, picking up where they left off on day one to completely flatten Narre North at Strathaird Reserve.

The Rams resumed play at 5/20 in response to the Lions' 199. Phillips ensured the Rams couldn't settle even for a second, picking up two of the last five wickets to finish with 7/6 off 16 overs, astonishing figures as the visitors rolled meekly for 54.

Sending the Rams immediately back in, the visitors fought out the game to finish on 6/159.

And in the final game of the opening round, Narre Warren (8/141) defeated St Brigid's/St Louis (138) in a one-dayer at Bonbeach Oval.

And in Turf 3, Lynbrook picked up where they left off from last week, almost inflicting an outright loss on Silverton.

The Bakers were always long shots to chase down the Lakers' imposing 5/290 on day one, and it took a little over two hours for Chris Jarrett's side to seal a win, rolling the home team for just 73.

Sending the Bakers back in to face the music once again, the Lakers had the home side 6/91, just four wickets shy of extra points.

Beaconsfield, meanwhile, got off to a rollicking start to its season, with gun recruit Jack Benbow ensuring the Tigers could claim an outright win over Parkfield.

The Tigers came into day two in a somewhat shaky position, sitting 3/48, still 57 runs short of the Bears' first innings total but did enough to pass the total and the roll the Bears in just 39 overs, allowing them nine overs to score 47 to claim the extra points.

In other matches, Lyndale (3/162) got off to a strong start by chasing down Coomora's (159) total with ease in a one-day match at BJ Powell Reserve, after day one was abandoned, while Fountain Gate (159) fell short of Keysborough (226) at Rowley Allan Reserve.

Swans building from the top, as improvement shows

And it's now slowly becoming their greatest strength.

The new look Casey-South Melbourne is a more competitive unit, and it's come from the top order. They are building an innings, and ensuring that the bowling group has something to defend every week.

In the 2017/18 season, the Swans passed 50 runs for the first wicket just twice in 21 innings - this year, they have already matched that feat in just three.

Both of those times were this weekend against quality outfits in Prahran and Fitzroy Doncaster, with the Swans now moving to a 2-1 Victorian Premier Cricket record.

With Sussex recruit Luke Wells taking over the captaincy in his first game for the club down at Toorak Park against the True Blues on Saturday, the Swans got off to a bright start with the bat after winning the toss, with Wells (51 off 51 balls) and Ryan Quirk (55) sharing a 95-run opening stand.

The skipper looked destructive - particularly against the quicks - while Quirk looked once again solid in defense and runs hard between the wickets.

That was until True Blues champ Shaun Miller (4/18) stepped up to the plate.

A stunning collapse of 5/13 had the Swans in strife, and when Quirk became Miller's fourth victim, the True Blues had the visitors 6/124.

Dev Pollock (46) and Dylan Hadfield (36) weathered the storm superbly, putting on 74 runs and eventually seeing the Swans post a competitive 9/219 off 50 overs.

James Maxwell (1/11) picked up his maiden first XI wicket in the opening exchanges, finding the edge of opener Adam Bull, and a double strike to spearhead Nathan Lambden (2/48) - including the prized scalp of run machine Miller, had the True Blues teetering on 3/35.

A half century to Nick King (56) and handy knocks by Jacob Serry (45) and Steve Seymour (37 not out) saw the True Blues hold on from 7/173 to eventually take the points with nine balls to spare.

Lachie Sperling (2/38) was once again impressive with his spin, while Josh Dowling (1/38) and Wells (1/48) each picked up wickets.

Despite not picking up the points, the Swans were impressive, and didn't allow the home side to dictate terms at any points.

But the Swans bounced back with an almighty statement the day after, holding off Fitzroy Doncaster at Casey Fields to by five runs in a major early season scalp.

The pair looked elegant, and held off some solid new ball bowling, with Wells in particular using all of his class from his first class career to find plenty of gaps and boundaries.

Wells anchored the innings superbly, notching up a century in just his second dig at the club, off the back of his fifty the day before, making 121 off 150 balls.

A middle order wobble was eventually straightened from Wells, who combined late with an aggressive Dev Pollock (31 off 18 balls) to set the Lions 246 for victory.

In-form spearhead Nathan Lambden (3/52) struck first ball, removing Matt Bremner, with gloveman Dev Pollock graciously accepting an

early catch.

Lambden removed Jack Rudd not long after, and from 4/57, the Lions - as expected - dug in, with a brilliant century to Zach Elliot (100) and a destructive knock to Liam Banthorpe (90) drawing the visitors to 18 required off the last over, with two wickets in hand.

Josh Dowling (4/48), as he has done in vital moments so far this year, stood tall and held his nerve, conceding just the 12 runs to help his side to a 2-1 record.

Narre prevails in the gloom On a miserable day weather-wise, Narre Warren's Midweek Pennant bowlers survived another close finish.

At Fountain Gate, Division 2 played Cranbourne. The best rink was that of Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Peter Hayden and Brent Hone, with a 24-14 victory. Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar also won (24-17), but Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Wilma Stevenson and Zak Storm went down 15-27.

Narre Warren (1) 14-63 defeated Cranbourne (2) 2-58.

Division 3 travelled to Waverley Golf and suffered another loss. The only winning rink was Janice Moran, Rose Rasmussen, Keith Mark and Geoff Miller (23-17); as Pam Uren, Enid Gibb, Ernesto Vergara and Peter Groom (12-19) and Stan Bulmer, Pauline Kempf, Jor McGuire and Judy Naughton (13-25) both lost.

Narre Warren (2) 2-48 lost to Waverley Golf (1) 14-61.

The six-a-side team was forced to forfeit after a communication breakdown.

Narre Warren (3) 0-0 lost to Keysborough (4) 16-15.

Wednesday saw the start of the Berwick Mazda 3 bowl Aggregate. A total of 14 teams play in the tournament, which lasts for seven months. Winners on the first day were Alan Thompson, Cliff Fothergill and Kurt Oswald from Berwick. The runners-up were the Narre

team of Rod Lane, Iain Stevenson and Wilma Stevenson.

Saturday Pennant was a mixed result for Narre Warren, with two wins and two losses.

But both wins were massive.

At Mugrave Country Club, Division 3 had a strong 43-shot win. Joe Selfridge, Reg Young, Rod Lane and Cam Lee won well (32-9), while John Wright, Tracey Storm, Peter Hayden and Zal Storm won 30-12. Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson added to the scores with a 26-10 win, but Colin Groom, Peter Lister, Iain Stevenson and Jim Millar went down 13-27.

Narre warren (1) 16-101 defeated Mulgrave CC (6) 2-58.

Division 4 was at Fountain Gate against Mentone. High scores were the order of the day for Narre as they had a huge win. Keith Mark, Jim Kempf, Graham Dodd and Norm Hosmer were the leaders with a 39-6 scoreline.

They were assisted by Wally Finlayson, Peter Groom, Percy Herath and Carl Lapham (37-5) and Jos van Hout, Ernesto Vergara, Philip Howard and John Zanon (31-17). Janice Moran, Peter Castricum, David Wilkinson and Geoff Miller completed the day, winning 29-4.

Narre Warren (2) 18-136 defeated Mentone (3) 0-32.

Also at Fountain gate was Division 5, which suffered a close loss against Willow Lodge. Arthur Fitt, Sharane Lyons, Ralph Devonshire and Stan Robinson won well 925-10, and Pam

Narre Warren's midweek team.

Uren, Alan Mark, Peter Lyons and Craig Moore won 21-19. Stan Bulmer, John Uren, Wilma Haringsma and Geoff Ampt just went down, 17-22, while Glen Cadman, Joe McGuire, Sharon Bull and Brent Grigg lost 18-40.

Narre Warren (3) 4-81 lost to Willow Lodge (1) 14-91.

Division 7 travelled to Pakenham and had a disappointing day. The rink of Dawn Baker, Darren Moore, Rudi Pompe and Derek Fenn was the best, losing 18-26. Denise Peeler, Margo Worsley, Leo McGeary and Pauline Kempf (13-26); Stan Burkitt, Len O'Brien, Jacki Moody and Helen McCarthy (11-29); and Diane Peterson, Rudi Oost, Les Clement and Grahm Peterson (8-33) all lost.

Narre Warren (4) 0-50 lost to Pakenham (5) 18-114.

Cranbourne crushes cross-town rivals CRANBOURNE BOWLS Side 2 Division 3 After losing narrowly last week the Cranbourne second side - playing at home - was very determined to do well against cross-town rival, Cranbourne RSL. But to win by a massive 44 shots exceeded all expectations.

The home side was in top from the start and raced away to a massive lead by the tea break.

At that stage three rinks were well ahead with only one side - skipped by Bill Bradbury playing against his old club - just a few shots down. But with great determination his side managed to pick up a few shots in the last few ends to win and enable Cranbourne to pick up all 18 points for the day.

The outstanding rink of the day was skipped

by Chris Griffiths and his team of Collins, Caddell and Hunt winning by 17 shots. Cranbourne 98 (18 points) defeated Cranbourne RSL 54.

Two other Cranbourne sides played at home and recorded good wins. Club member David Brown watched the game from the sidelines and commented: "It was a delight to watch all three games played on all three greens on a beautiful sunny, picturesque day at Cranbourne".

The six-a-side outfit also had a good win away, which was a great result for the club, but unfortunately the top side lost away to Pakenham on a tricky green.

Side 3 Division 5 Skip Fritz Helle, returning to bowls after his horticultural commitments, was in great form and was well supported by his talented rink of Bill Sheriff, Joy McLisky and Isobel Partington, who won by 11 shots which enabled overall victory by 14 shots.

Cranbourne 84 (14 points) defeated Keysborough 70.

Side 4 Division 7 The big winners of the day were skip John Kent and his crew of Tom De Pradines, Olive Stanley and Bob Dickson winning by nine shots. The overall winning margin was five shots, so the other rinks welcomed the win by John and his crew which sealed the result.

Cranbourne 73 (14 points) defeated Cardinia Waters 68.

Side 5 six-a-side Club Legend and life member Stan Burnet returned from a short break to get his rink of new bowler Alan Agullana and Bruce Harper over the line by an impressive 12 shots and overall victory by 15 shots against Hampton Park.

Doves making some moves

Side 1 Division 2 Playing away at Pakenham on a tricky green was always going to be a challenge for the Cranbourne side but a 17 shot loss was very disappointing.

The only winning rink was once again that of skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield and his team of O'Day, Byrnes and Jones, who won by four shots. This is not the start to the season that Cranbourne was expecting. The good news is that with the remaining four Cranbourne sides all winning this week, the future still looks promising for the rest of their season Cranbourne 71(2 points) lost to Pakenham 88.

Dudink were simply outstanding again, winning by six shots. This rink is in great form at the moment, however the other two rinks seemed a little down on form compared to the previous two weeks and against strong opposition they could not turn it around on the day.

With the side now in third place on the ladder it needs to rally and recapture the previous good form shown over the past two weeks prior.

Cranbourne Ladies 50 (2 points) lost to Glen Waverley 72.

Other midweek bowls results this week were: Cranbourne 2 Division 2 Open 58 (two points) lost to Narre Warren 63; Cranbourne 3 Division 3 open 64 (14 points) defeated Noble Park 56; and Cranbourne 4 six-a-side open 36 (2 points) lost to Willow Lodge 43.

Doveton has significantly bolstered its key position stocks ahead of a change of scenery in 'AFL Outer East', with a gun ruckman and key defender signing on for 2019.

After the departure of Russ Gabriel to MPNFL Division 1 reigning premiers, Pines, the Doves went searching for a ready-made replacement to take the number one ruck mantle next season.

Michael Sikora, the 208-centimetre big man who has played his recent football with Rowville in the powerful Eastern Football League, will add plenty of experience and skill after signing for the Doves.

The 28-year-old has played plenty of senior VFL football, first at Sandringham, then at Essendon, going to represent Victoria in a game against Western Australia, and on to Williamston and Frankston. He also had a brief stint with Pakenham, and showcased his class at the Lions.

The Doves have also welcomed back gun defender Daniel Zajac, with the 29-year-old, 198-centimetre key position player also lured back to AJ Robinson Oval after five years with Rowville.

Zajac has represented the Ellinbank league in interleague during his time with Nar Nar Goon, played VFL for Coburg and represented the Casey Cardinia league in interleague during his time with the Doves.

They will both, as expected, take on leadership roles down at the Doves, with the battling club looking to improve on its last place finish in 2018 in what was the final year of the SEFNL. The News also understands that Officer is another club making plenty of off-season moves, as the Kangaroos look to improve on their drought breaking finals appearance in 2018.

Officer president Nick McLennan was tight lipped, but told the News there is plenty of excitement at Starling Road.

"The football department has been working overtime with a number of new names committing their future to our club in the coming weeks," he said.

The Kangaroos are believed to be heavily targeting forward power and midfield depth, and have made player retention a priority.

"The club is far more advanced in its discussions with current and potential players than at this point in previous seasons and we think this is a great sign as we build towards the 2019 season."
