The Olinda Precinct Plan is moving ahead after councillors approved the planning permit to build a minor sports and recreation facility on the site.

A big contributor to the sites redevelopment and inclusion of a football oval has been the increase in sport in the area.

A spokesperson for Parks Victoria said that there has been a massive growth in football in the area, particularly women's.

"The local AFL participation has grown 20 per cent since 2015, and is predicted to grow another 36 percent by 2021," he said.

"Summer cricket participation has grown by 15 percent and is expected to grow by another 15 percent by 2021."

Councillor Tony Stevenson put forward an alternate recommendation that would approve the planning permit, but a number of

The recommendation put forth by councillor Stevenson divided the room with councillors Heenan and Clarke unable to support the motion.

"It looks as if sport has won again over the environment ... i don't understand why all the other view apart from sport are important," councillor Heenan said.

The Olinda Precinct Plan is moving ahead with councillors approving the planning permit at the council meeting on 9 October.

The project will transform the 34-hectare former Olinda golf course site into public parklands and will include a nature-based play space, a sports oval and open space for markets and events, new walking tracks and picnic facilities, and shelters and seating.

On the night of the meeting council chambers were filled with residents and community groups who were vocally against the plan.

Elke Effler spoke on behalf of The Hills Common Alliance and noted the sites significance within the community.

"I find the desecration of such a beautiful unique site incomprehensible," she said.

"I've heard it said the Dandenongs are the jewel in the crown but how can it be if right at the top there is this huge oval with bollards."

The Olinda public golf course closed more than six years ago after being abandoned by its owners.

Since then the picturesque site, which sits adjacent the newly named Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, has been the centre of much debate over its future use, and in 2017 The Victorian Government committed $4.72 million to converting the 34-hectare zone to parkland, that included a sports oval.

That expansion has garnered criticism from locals who would prefer the site to remain the way it is.

Jenny Oxer told the Council that a project reference group organised by Member for Monbulk James Merlino refused to include the Hills Common Alliance.

"We approached James Merlino three times to ask for representation in that group, both the informal group calling itself a consultancy group and after when it became a steering group," she said.

"Each time in writing and verbally we were declined admittance initially on the basis there was no more space in the room for another person and later on we were told we're not a formal group."

LETTERS ades. The 'Let's make it a Party' thing does nothing to enhance its reverance. It distracts attention from the real problems of society, and some of the current injustices our diggers fought to overcome.

CFA sponsorship I think I can speak for my fellow CFA Volunteers when I say we are angry at the CFA's deal with Rugby Victoria for it to provide a 3 year $150,000 sponsorship. I am incensed with the decision which was reported as being "quietly announced" in July which may explain why many CFA members have been unaware of it until it was reported in press reports this week.

As a former Upwey Brigade Captain and CFA Board Member I for one am angry with the decision of CFA to enter into such a contentious sponsorship deal or any similar arrangement is politically naïve, let alone lacking in logic. I am astounded at the politically naivety, let alone the lack of logic of the decision. Our Community and as such-our "Customers" perceptions will have a detrimental impact on Brigade fund raising and undoubtedly cause justifiable Membership anger at CFA's decision. Both the CFA Executive and Board must explain why. It is one of the strangest decisions from CFA in my 59 years as a Member.

Bless them - don't eat them I'm sure the Buddhist animal blessing ceremony at Lillydale Lake (Animals get a blessing, 2 October) was a delightful event but, if we are really serious about wanting to enhance the well-being of animals, the most important step we can take is to stop eating them - along with their milk and eggs.

Last year, a mind-boggling 70 billion animals - 10 times the number of people on Earth - were slaughtered for food.

The majority were raised in sunless, stinking factory farms inside cramped cages and pens.

Many were subjected to agonising mutilations without pain relief and many others broiler chickens - were deliberately bred in a manner known to cause painful crippling.

Around 6 billion male chicks - deemed "trash" by the egg industry - were minced up alive or suffocated.

Every single one of these animals had the same capacity for suffering as us or our pets.

Leadership needed Recently the IPCC reported on the actions needed to limit global warming to 1 1/2 degrees. The Prime Minister responded saying it would be irresponsible to respond to a call for the phasing out of coal by the 2050's. What is truly irresponsible and short sighted is our pathetic emissions reduction target and the hostile attitude to renewable energy by many Liberals and Nationals. We need leadership on this issue not heads buried in the sand. Global warming in excess of 1 1/2 degrees will be perilous for future generations especially our farming communities on whom we all rely.

Remembrance day reflection I see the publicity for Remembrance Day on the 11 th of November (Ranges Trader Mail, 9 th October, page 1) is well and truly cranking up, and the plan to cover Emerald and Puffing Billy with poppies has captured the imagination of many people and organisations far and wide.

Not mine. The value of this extravaganza escapes me when there are so many problems in society; mental health and suicide, homelessness, real poverty for the unfortunate, drug, alcohol and gambling addiction, family and street violence, road rage, racial and religious villification, environmental degradration and pollution, I could go on.

It's like the obesity epidemic. We think eating makes us feel better and forget the problems, so let's eat, and eat more. But the problems don't go away. They get worse.

Over the past 12 months, Council Officers have been facilitating a series of community discussions under the banner of "Connect Lilydale". Lilydale community members have attended these discussions, identifying a number of key community priorities.

The community priorities identified need to be bought to a township group. Fortunately, Yarra Ranges has a large and growing number of independent township groups that advocate on behalf of their communities to Council and other levels of government on issues that are important to ratepayers. Lilydale has never had this voice and we believe that the time has come. Lilydale has a great shopping precinct, sporting clubs, beautiful parks, community organisations and lots of heritage value.

We invite you to attend a meeting at 6pm on Thursday 1st November, at Box Hill Institute's Lakeside Campus in Jarlo Drive, Lilydale to set up a new independent community-run Lilydale Township Group. A light supper will be served from 5pm.

It has never been more important to a have strong and united community voice in Lilydale.

Students in creepy spirits

By Derek Schlennstedt Schools in the hills have been hard at work designing some spooky creations that will adorns Ferny Creek Recreation Reserve for the Halloween on the Green event.

The event is in its second year and is a celebration of all things spooky.

Its features a variety of feature children's activities and Debbie Haberfield, Director of Sassafras Preschool said it was great to get the local schools involved in designing the decorations.

"It's the second year of the fundraiser for us, and it's exciting because we know what's involved and the kids had such a great day last year, so that makes this one even more spe-

cial," Ms Haberfield said "They get to dress up in costumes and engage in a lot of activities at minimal cost."

"We made bats using the children's hands as the wings of the bats and they're going to be used as decorations around the event."

"Each school and centre involved has contributed to decorations and the children have ownership of their contribution to the event."

"They can see their work on display and feel like they've been part of it."

Last year the event, organised by the Philanthropic Collective exceeded all expectations and raised an incredible $16,984, which was donated back to four local schools.

Event Director at the Philanthropic Collective, Andrew Fillip-Gautier, said the event would feature children's activities, live bands, carnival and pony rides and a trick or treat trail, all included in the gate price.

"Some families embrace Halloween, some don't, so we thought, what if we put all this under one umbrella and did it in a safe space, at the Ferny Creek Reserve?" he said.

He urged people to book early and said a free mini bus shuttle would be available on the day.

Ms Haberfield said it was great community event, which involved a lot of groups and school in the area.

IN BRIEF Spate of car break-ins

Oh deer in the hills Yarra Ranges Council was one of four outer eastern councils who wrote to premier Daniel Andrews to ask the government to tackle the burgeoning deer problem.

On Friday, 5 October Yarra Ranges Council, Manningham, Cardinia and Nillumbik Council all sent a letter pleading for the state government to help tackle the problem, which they argued was hurting agricultural businesses, and was putting lives at risk.

"As they encroach further into peri-urban and urban areas, pest deer pose a significant and growing risk to people's safety, to the environment and to agriculture," the letter states.

"With this encroachment, the more difficult and expensive pest deer control becomes."

"We are writing to seek State Government action and resources to manage pest deer in Melbourne's peri-urban areas, such as Manningham, Nillumbik, Cardinia and Yarra Ranges."

The letter stated that State government needs to declare deer as a pest, deliver an effective Victorian Deer Management Strategy (VDMS) and facilitate the reduction of the deer population, particularly in peri-urban areas.

Deer numbers have exploded in Victoria since the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires and the animals are increasingly invading Areas of the Yarra Ranges, causing car crashes and environmental damage.

The government released a draft deer management strategy in the past month, which includes opening up 90,000 hectares of the Alpine National Park to deer hunting.

Yarra Ranges Council Director of Environment and Engineering Mark Varmalis said that "their rapid population growth has turned them into a significant pest affecting the natural environment, the economy and people's safety particularly on roads."

"In the Yarra Ranges there is evidence of the deer population affecting national parks, farms, and infrastructure," Mr Varmalis said.

Belgrave police are warning drivers to remove any valuable items from their cars, following a spate of car break-ins.

Between 9pm on 11 October and 8:30am on 12 October three cars on School Road, Menzies Creek were broken into.

Police said the offender has broken into each car and rifled through it, though nothing has been taken.

On the same night offenders also broke into two cars in Upwey, and again have rifled through the car but taken nothing.

Sergeant Paul Phillips from Belgrave Police Station reminded people to remove any valuables from their car if parking it on the road overnight.

"These drivers have done the right thing and haven't kept any valuables in their car it's and as result haven't lost anything," he said.

"Effective deer control requires a strategic and collaborative approach from all land holders, including agencies, private land holders, Yarra Ranges Council and surrounding local government areas."

"We hope the strategy will achieve increased awareness and understanding in the community about feral deer and pest animal management through monitoring, evaluation and planning."

Emergency services responded to a house fire at Glenfern Avenue in Upwey at 11pm on 8 October.

A widespread search for the 43-year-old mother, which included a helicopter, took place in the hours after the fire. After eventually being located, it's understood she was taken to hospital for a welfare check.

Fires lit in old IGA Police are investigating after five fires were lit in the now unoccupied IGA building in Mooroolbark.

At about 3am CFA crews responded to a fire alarm, and arrived to fire small fires in the venue.

Police said offenders gained entry and lit five fires, and have also graffitied the walls.

The fire was extinguished quickly.

Investigations continue into house fire Investigations are continuing into the Glenfern Avenue fire that occurred on 8 October.

Emergency services responded to the fire late at night at 11pm and Cliff Pancutt, Captain at Upwey CFA said it took 40 minutes to get under control.

"The house was well alight; the structure had been compromised by the time we got there."

"I'm pretty pleased with the crews we had, the amount of time they spent to get it under control and not allow it to spread any further for me neighbouring properties and the other part of the house," he said.

"The crews in my opinion did a good job."

"Difficult circumstances with a number of reports that potentially someone missing inside the house."

"It took around about 40 minutes before we had the fire under control to the point where we could start doing some internal searches."

Mooroolbark Police are appealing for witnesses to an accident where the offending driver has not stopped.

At 5.30pm on 12 August the offending vehicle- a gold metallic Hyundai Station Wagon turned out of Fletchers Road onto Manchester Road and collided with a Ford Falcon.

A teenager, believed to be 16-years-old was in the house at the time of the blaze and was forced to climb out of a bedroom window to escape.

Luckily, she suffered no injuries Yarra Valley Crime Investigation Unit told the Mail that the cause of the fire was still under investigation.

Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Steven Katiforis.

Three warrants have been issued for the 42-year-old's arrest in relation to assault and criminal damage-related offences.

Katiforis is described as about 170cm tall, with a solid build and a balding/shaven head.

He is known to frequent the Yarraville, Seddon, Moorabbin and Ferntree Gully areas.

In other news, I was pleased to attend the Cockatoo Township Committee meeting last week where CFA and roads were raised as the major local issues. We discussed the current challenges that the CFA are facing with new restrictions in assisting local churches and community groups with small donations. We must continue to provide community support for our volunteers.

Another issue raised at the meeting was local roads, I recently met with Sue Wales a local

constituent and representative of the Cockatoo 21st Century Roads Action Group. Sue and I discussed various local roads and issues with priority being the need for an upgrade to Wellington Road Clematis. Local roads was also raised as the top issue on my recent community survey. I will continue to advocate on your behalf and work with VicRoads and Council to ensure our local roads are up to scratch.

Fury road too steep

By Derek Schlennstedt A Monbulk woman has said that Yarra Ranges Council has created a steeper incline on her driveway making it unsafe as part of a 'Special Charge Scheme' in which the council charged her over $15,000.

In April 2013 the Mail reported on the plight of Monbulk mum Fiona Hearl who was campaigning for Jellicoe Avenue to be re-aligned.

Ms Hearl was unable to drive out of her property safely due to the road being flush with her driveway. This meant she had to drive onto the road before she could see any oncoming traffic.

In November 2013 Council passed a motion to spend $60,000 to improve the road.

Consequently the road was moved off Ms Hearl's property and Ms Hearl said a complete realignment was assured as part of the 'Special Charge Scheme.'

Though, according to Ms Hearl the road was not realigned into the middle of the 20 metre reserve and only moved two metres from her property leaving the highside in excess of 14 metres of reserve land.

As part of the road works the height of the road has also increased by over a metre which has increased the gradient of her driveway, resulting in a blind spot when driving down.

"My main concern is obviously how dangerous it is and how steep the gradient has become," she said.

"It's made my driveway unsafe."

They could have at least moved it closer to the centre of the reserve so my driveway could be kept at the same gradient it was before."

"We all entered into the road scheme assuming the road would be re-aligned and that the road would go into the centre of the road reserve."

"That has not occurred with the high side in parts gaining almost all of the road reserve"

Monbulk woman Fiona Hearl has said that Yarra Ranges Council has created a steeper incline on her driveway making it unsafe.

"The road is only 4 metres wide so the other side has over 14 metres in places."

Director of Environment and Engineering, Mark Varmalis responded to the realignment of the road and said it was "normal practice for the construction of street schemes to maintain the existing alignment and pavement to minimise the impact on the surrounding environment and provide a cost effective form of construction."

"As part of the works, another section of the existing gravel road formation encroaching onto private property to the west of No 37, was also to be relocated clear of the property line," he said.

"The sealing of Jellicoe Avenue via the Special Charge Scheme and the driveway of number 37 has greatly improved access to the

property, by providing a flatter section at the top of the driveway, adjacent to the road (at the expense of a slightly steeper middle section), which allows vehicles to safely stop and enter the roadway."

"Generally speaking, the design and construction of street schemes are a balance between the existing natural terrain, vegetation and environmental impacts, access to properties on the high and low sides of the roadway, existing services above and below ground, cost-effectiveness and individual expectations."

Ms Hearl claims that prior to the Special Charge Scheme she already had a flatter section at the top of her driveway as part of the 2013 works and said the only thing the 'Special Charge Scheme has done is to increase the gradient of her driveway making it unsafe.'

More PSOs for Belgrave An elected Liberal Nationals Government will increase the number of PSOs at Belgrave Railway Station to keep Victorians safe on public transport.

Commuters will benefit from a second day time shift of PSOs as part of the additional 100 transit PSOs under a Liberal Nationals Government.

At the moment, PSO shifts are from 6pm until the last train.

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will introduce a new and additional daytime shift between 10am and 6pm for up to 20 railway stations identified as daytime crime hotspots.

"The Liberal team, led by Matthew Guy, is committed to ensuring the safety of commuters using Belgrave Station," Liberal Candidate for Monbulk john Schurink said.

"A Liberal Nationals Government will increase frontline police numbers as well as expand the PSO program to keep public transport users safer."

Mr Schurink said that an elected Liberal Nationals Government will work with Victoria Police and The Police Association Victoria to recruit and deploy 100 new PSOs on the new daytime Transit PSO roster.

Going digital The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges will soon be home to at least 25 digital kiosks for visitors.

The State Government announced funding through its $2 million Regional Events and Innovation Fund (REIF).

The self-service kiosks will deliver tourist information through interactive touchscreens placed at the top-visited attractions and public spaces.

The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges received about 5.2 million domestic and international visitors who spent about $732 million in the year ending March 2018.

In 2016-17, tourism generated employment for about 6600 people in the region.

The digital kiosks come after Yarra Ranges Tourism made the decision to close the visitor information centres at Healesville and Upper Ferntree Gully in June 2017.

80 years of their history

All Saints Anglican Church in Selby will celebrate 80 years on Tuesday, 30 October, and the family of one of its founding members will return for the occasion.

Secretary of the church, Felicity Podger told the Mail that the land and the church were given to the people of Selby by Mr. Allen Tye in memory of his wife, Carlotta.

"He had a furniture business in Melbourne but lived in Selby," she said.

"He donated the church and the land to the people of Selby in memory of his Carlotta."

"For many years the church was called the Carlotta Tye Memorial Church but in 85 it was changed. Ms Podger said the church had invited the relatives of Mr Tye back to celebrate the milestone.

"We're having an open day in the hall and in the church and then on the Sunday Bishop Paul Barker is coming to preach and celebrate a holy communion," she said.

"We've invited member of the Tye family and his granddaughter and her daughter and some of the Tye relatives have indicated that they're coming to the service."

In 1938 the church was built and quickly became an important and vital part of Selby.

Only a year after its construction it was used as a refuge for women and children during the bushfires which burnt around Black Hill.

Both the church and church hall survived the fires unscathed and Ms Podger said it has remained relatively untouched.

She said although it's not as busy as it once

"We still get weddings from time to time, but not as many," she said.

"It's a very small church, but beautifully well kept."

On the Sunday, Bishop Paul Barker will preside and preach at a 10 am service with lunch to follow in the hall .

Plane crash had impact

By Derek Schlennstedt A remembrance service will be held for the Kyeema airline disaster that occurred 80 years ago on the slopes of Mount Dandenong.

The memorial will be held at the crash site, located on the Kyeema walking track at Osprey Road, off Ridge Road Mount Dandenong, on Saturday 27th of October at 2.30 pm The event is being organised by the Mt. Dandenong Historical Society, the Anglican Parish and in conjunction with the Lilydale Squadron of the Australian Air League and the Mt Evelyn RSL. Co-ordinator for the event Max Lamb said "the incident was not only Australia's worst airline disaster; it was one of the worst that occurred anywhere in the world."

"After 80 years, it still remains Victoria's worst aviation crash," he said.

The crash sent shock waves through the Australian Government, and after a public inquiry, a re-writing of the nation's aviation procedures occurred.

The story goes that airliner known as KYEEMA was returning from Adelaide with a full complement of passengers.

On the approach to Melbourne, low cloud hid the airport from the crew.

Due to a mistake in navigation they unknowingly missed Essendon airport and headed straight into the slopes of Mount Dandenong, which was covered in fog.

Four of those killed were returned servicemen from WW1.

"The crash of this airliner has had more influence on the introduction of aviation safety regulations than any other air crash before or since," Mr Lamb said.

On the road to recovery A Belgrave podcaster wants to change the outcomes for sexual and family violence survivors.

Ashleigh Rae is producing the Recovery podcast and building a social media presence around it for women to share their experiences and the road to recovery.

"It's also a place where I aim to bring to high-calibre experts who offer services to help us rebuild our lives, from body therapists, to legal practitioners and law enforcement," she said.

"This is an advocacy space for women - not a place to troll or minimalise the daily experiences women endure.

"This is a place where we come together to

share, learn and be empowered."

The project is self-funded.

Ms Rae was not successful in a recent Pick My Project application, but she's still seeking funding elsewhere.

"It's a podcast and website where we're really talking about everything which is not talked about with issues of violence and sexual assault trauma," she said.

"It's real and relatable.

"I want to change the outcome for survivors.

"They often don't get the help that they need."

Community bank’s party The Upwey Community Bank branch turns 20 this week and is inviting everyone to join in the celebrations.

The Foothills Festival 2018 has arrived!

Funded through sponsorships from the Upwey Community Bank and grants from the Yarra Ranges Council, the Foothills Festival is a free family event for the community, by the community.

The idea was inspired by Upwey's Grassroots Market team who wanted to create an event that would celebrate the local community.

"The idea came out of the Grassroots Market," Market Coordinator Jacqui Buckland said.

"We felt that so much of our community loved coming to the market to connect and enjoy the village of Upwey's Main Street.

"Combine this with the huge (amount of local) musicians, artists, producers, practitioners, sporting, special interest groups, clubs, and the multiple dynamic not-for-profit community groups Upwey is home to, we felt it just had to be celebrated."

The event, which Jacqui said will appear like a street party, will feature roving street performers, the Grassroots local art and craft market, skate workshops, kids art and craft activities, dance troupes and circus acts, alongside local buskers and diverse food offerings.

With the closure of Main Street, the private car park will offer children's rides, activities and performances (run by a professional event company).

"Collaborating with community groups, services, and special interest groups will offer connections for locals and contribute to healthy partnerships," Jacqui said.

"The festival will create a sense of place, contribute to healthy partnerships and the well-being of our township - and of course beyond."

Blue day out at the Gully

By Richard Millott Knox Gardens had a day out against Ferntree Gully, with the Falcons claiming the points chasing a low target in round two.

Bowling first at the Blues, Knox Gardens made in-roads early claiming a wicket on the second ball of the match before having the home side 4/12 after the fourth over.

From there, Ferntree Gully failed to recover and was dismissed for 73 in 36.3 overs.

Todd Burley was the Captain of Chaos with the ball, claiming 4/11.

In reply, Ferntree Gully was looking for quick wickets but Knox Gardens was able to chase down the target, finishing with its second win of the season at 2/76.

Ferntree Gully Footballers have found their place within Norm Reeves Shield, registering a win against Eildon Park.

Radhik Gooneratne (68), Nick Bogar (41) and Ben Rawlings (36) were all pivotal contributors to the Griffin’s 7/187, with Monto Perera providing 3/33 from his overs.

Eildon Park saw Cody Morris contribute 32

to the effort, however the show belonged to Yohan De Silva, with the recruit claiming 5/11 to dismiss the Panthers for 85.

A Cameron Wheeler hat-trick wasn’t enough to get Upwey over the line at Johnson Park, with the Sharks holding on in a tight match.

Upwey was well-serviced to set a competitive total, reaching 7/200 thanks to Nick Whitty (41), Julian Whetstone (40) and Steve Moore (30).

The Sharks got off to a strong start before losing four wickets inside of eight balls to be 4/103 following Wheeler’s (3/37) hat-trick.

Nervous times were had at Fair Park, before the home team passed the target with five balls to spare and one wicket in hand.

In Decoite Shield, the Nathan Hicks show rolled into Olinda for the weekend, with his unbeaten 151 being one of the memorable knocks in local one day cricket.

Hicks, along with Anthony Brolic (58), were comprehensive with the bat, ending at 2/262.

Olinda too was up to the challenge, with Josh Langer registering 57 as part of the 8/160 reply.

Monbulk took the points back following its

match at St Johns Tecoma.

The Saints posted a competitive target of 197 thanks to Jake Sali (59) and Billy Sanger (34).

Aaron Powell was the lead Hawk with the pill, claiming 3/40.

Monbulk was well-measured in its chase of the Saints’ target, ending at 5/200. Shane Cosstick (79) and Aaron Bermingham (70) the key pillars of the victorious chase effort.

Rowville made light work of South Belgrave at Seebeck Reserve.

Daniel Cormack provided South with a sound 44, while at the bowling crease Steve Sandhu claimed four wickets for the Hawks to restrict the visitors to 105.

Darren Hill, fresh off a quality performance for Victoria’s Over-50s Championships in Brisbane last week, led the chase with 53 not-out as Rowville passed 1/110 to claim the win.

Knox Gardens and Mountain Gate played out a close match at Knox Gardens Reserve to close out Round 2 action, with scores unavailable at time of writing.

Monbulk bowlers are regional champions Monbulk bowlers in bounce back Monbulk bowlers Andrew Bell and Eric Markham won the Eastern Region pairs championship.

This event was played over three days at the Croydon Bowls Club.

Bell and Markham worked their way through the rounds defeating teams from Heathmont, Vermont South, Ferntree Gully and Mulgrave Country Club.

The Monbulk pair won the semi-final against Mulgrave Country Club convincingly.

In the final, they played a composite team from Mulgrave Country Club and Berwick and

this proved a much tougher game.

Bell and Markham dropped two shots on the first end, and by the seventh end they were seven shots down.

They were still down seven shots (8 to 15) on the 10th end with only five ends left to play.

Then in the next four ends they collected a one, a three, a two and a one to be 15 shots-all going into the final end.

It was a thriller.

Markham went long with his first two bowls and then landed one on the jack.

The opposition came through with weight and smacked the jack out to the side, just hanging onto the boundary.

Markham's long bowl was now shot.

Bell came in with his last bowl and sat it right next to the jack, but not a toucher.

The opposition had the final bowl.

He tried to kill the end, but just managed to take out Bell's shot bowl and they both ended up in the ditch.

Markham's long bowl was again shot and this meant the Monbulk pair had claimed the regional championship.

In round two of Saturday pennant on 13 October, Monbulk 1 bounced back from the previous week to record an excellent win at home over Bayswater by 78 shots to 56.

Monbulk 1 started slowly but eventually found the line and length to take the lead.

Eric Markham's rink had a strong win, as did Andrew Bell's rink, both winning by 14 shots, 25 to 11. Richard Cookson's rink had a closer win by four shots and Brian Smith's team suffered a loss by 10 shots, which in the end was a reasonable margin as they were well down early.

Monbulk 2 maintained their position on the top of the ladder, thrashing Carrum by 69 shots, 118 to 49.

Dick Coppin's rink with Jim Anderson bowling well won by 24 shots, 32 to eight.

Peter Donders' rink won by 20 shots, 32 to 12; Peter Francis' rink won by eight shots and Case Broekhoff's rink cruised home by 17 shots.

Monbulk 3 had a tough assignment playing at Heatherdale on grass.

Petr Hiscox's rink battled hard and were able to get on top of their opponents, winning by four shots.

Doug Elliot's rink had two bad ends which cost them the game, going down by 11 shots.

This meant Monbulk 3 lost to Heatherdale by seven shots, 38 to 45.

In Tuesday pennant, Monbulk 1 continued its great start to the season winning its third game in a row by defeating Chirnside Park at home by 16 shots, 66 to 50.

Andrew Bell's rink won handsomely by 19 shots, 33 to 14.

Richard Cookson's rink won by 3 shots and Eric Markham's rink went down by six shots.

Monbulk 2 took the points across all rinks against Vermont South at home, winning by 29 shots, 71 to 42.

Dick Coppin won by 15 shots, Peter Francis by 10 shots and Everett Hargreaves by four.

Monbulk 3 fought hard against Box Hill RSL away from home, winning one rink out of three to go down by 12 shots, 52 to 64.

Barry Adsheads' rink won by six shots, with newcomer Greg Meyers showing his skill during the match.

Mike Harris's and John Prudon's rinks both went down by nine shots.

Good start for Mount Evelyn

By Jamie Strudley Excellent conditions greeted Yarra Ranges Athletics Club athletes for the second round of the summer track and field season at Morrison Reserve.

With school holidays out of the way, athletes turned up in greater numbers across all age groups.

This week's program saw the return of the high jump, javelin and hurdle events for the first time this season.

It was also the round for the 1500m, the longest race in the junior season.

Highlights were the record-breaking run by under-14 girls athlete Kiara Flavel, taking more than 20 seconds off the old record to run a time of 5min 1sec, and the under-10 athletes tackling this distance for the first time.

A number of age groups got to compete in the sprint and long jump events once again, giving them an opportunity for an early season personal best, to set them on the pathway of improvement as the summer progresses.

Earlier in the week, several Yarra Ranges Athletics members competed for their school as part of the School Sports Victoria District Athletics championships.

Congratulations to all the athletes who competed - Sharni Kerr, Amy Pearce, Scarlett Wheeler, Tahlia Murden, Tiara Willis, Stephanie van Bemmel, Sasha Maggs, Aemelia Stevenson, Keisha Wheeler, Zoe Clarke, Andre Johanson, Dane Cherry, Spencer Tabone and James Davidson.

The Yarra Ranges Athletics senior team competed at various venues across Victoria on Saturday in AV Shield competition.

Final team results are not available, however some very strong performances from all athletes will certainly result in some good team points.

Standout performances were a 20 second PB to Camden Hewitson on 2000m steeplechase, a sub-2 minute 800m for Harrison Van Duuren, and a new athlete competing for the first time, congratulations Richard.

Next week the seniors head to either Casey Fields or Williamstown for round three

of the AV Shield.

Sunday saw a few athletes compete in events at the Melbourne Marathon festival on what became a very hot day.

Graham Coutts didn't quite beat the sun in, running 3 hours 13 minutes for the 42.2km distance.

While Geoff has 54 years' experience as a motor mechanic, including 25 years in the RACV Roadside Service, Simon has 29 years' under his belt and Sean, who has worked for Belwey Motors for three years, has 15 years' experience.

Liam also enhances the store's high standard of workmanship, with 23 years' experience as a motor mechanic - ten of which he has spent at Belwey Motors.
