Track showdown By Cam Lucadou-Wells The hotly contested fate of Maurice Kirby Velodrome in Noble Park will be known as soon as the end of October. In recent months, cyclists have mounted a showdown with Greater Dandenong Council over its preferred demolition of the track at Parkfield Reserve. The council insists no final decision has been made on its draft reserve masterplan which would replace the velodrome with soccer pitches and a shared path. Springvale cyclist Kym Nguyen has doubts over Greater Dandenong Council's three-step community consultation. In the absence of a cycling club at the track, Cycling Victoria nor Maurice Kirby's family were sounded out about the demolition, he said. At a recent meeting with him, council officers refused to discuss the track, he said. "We're left with a situation where literally nothing can be done because they've shut their doors." The 'Save Noble Park Velodrome' group argue that a $75,000 resurface is all that's needed to repair the asphalt track. Missy Kempster regularly walks her pram around the velodrome. She had been unaware of the planned demolition when Star News met her at the track on 10 October. She disagreed with Greater Dandenong's claim that the velodrome was largely disused. "That's not right. On any given weekend, on any given day, you'll see people using it. "A lot of mums walk around the track while the kids play on the grassed area (inside the track)." The velodrome is named after legendary bike-shop owner and sports commentator Maurice Kirby, who founded Pedal Clubs of Victoria. At a recent council meeting, Cr Roz Blades publicly assured that Mr Kirby would continue to be honoured at the reserve. Mr Kirby's daughter Gayle George said there was "no way" her father would sup-

"That wasn't what Dad was all about. "A shared path wasn't his concept of things." At the velodrome, rider John O'Brien was amazed he didn't know about the track until the protest campaign several weeks ago. "It's a very casual velodrome because it doesn't have a massive bank on it. You can teach kids how to ride without any cars around. "It's a piece of infrastructure that should definitely be kept." State champion rider David Koroknai, of Rowville, has ridden on the track regularly in the past nine years.

"I was training here even when riding at international level. It's always used." The planned replacement gravel path would be "completely useless" for riding track bikes, he said. Maree Davenport, the Liberal candidate for Mulgrave, used to ride the locally "unique" amenity as a kid. "It's always been a safe place to ride away from the roads. "It's in terrible repair but that's because of years of neglect by the council." On 8 October, Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said a formal report on Parkfield Reserve would be tabled for a vote within four to six weeks.

The council had engaged in a three step consultation process starting in December 2016, including website surveys and a postcard survey of all residents within a kilometre of the reserve. The track did not meet Cycling Victoria requirements as a velodrome in terms of gradient, safety fences and a safe ride-off area, Mr Bosman said. An estimated extra 46 soccer pitches and four cricket fields were required in the next 5-10 years but there was also no "known demand" for competition cycling in Greater Dandenong. There was no established cycling club in the municipality, and there were other suitable velodromes across Melbourne, Mr Bosman said.

Greens pull plug on pokies By Cam Lucadou-Wells Outside Greater Dandenong's most lucrative pokies venue, The Greens have pledged to phase out gaming machines from the suburbs. If implemented, pokies other than in Crown Casino would be banned within a decade. Greens deputy leader Nina Springle said that in her South East Metropolitan electorate, more than $570 million was lost on poker machines in the past year. The seat covers the cities of Greater Dandenong, Casey, Kingston, Monash, Knox and Frankston. Ms Springle said Greater Dandenong, where more than $120 million had been lost on pokies in the past 12 months, was being "targeted" by the gambling industry. Keysborough Hotel - the backdrop of the Greens' election pitch - alone reaped more than $18 million from its 89 machines in 201718. "The City of Greater Dandenong is one of the most disadvantaged areas in Melbourne and it has the highest number of poker machines per person in Victoria," Ms Springle said. "(The gambling industry is) using predatory tactics to suck money from communities least able to afford them." Under the plan, the recent 20-year pokies licences extension by the State Government would be repealed. It would be replaced with a six-year licence from 2022-2028. The Greens would create a $200 million compensation fund to encourage venues to go pokies-free earlier and subsidise more "socially inclusive" programs at clubs such as sport, art, music nights and gyms. Ms Springle said the fund would help pubs and clubs "adjust their business model". "It's not aimed at directly replacing pokies revenue. "It's important to note that the phase out

"Gambling isn't a highly intensive employer, and experts believe that reducing expenditure on pokies is likely to increase spending in other areas of the economy."

The State Government nor the Opposition have plans to ban pokies. A Government spokesman said it was focusing on reducing harm from gambling. "We know how insidious problem gambling can be. "We are freezing pokies numbers across the state, limiting daily cash withdrawals in venues and capping the number of pokies in areas most vulnerable to gambling harm." Community Clubs Victoria is actively campaigning on behalf of clubs with poker machines ahead of November's State Election. According to a recent CCV statement, antigambling changes would eventually cause

clubs to be "unviable". "These clubs are not-for-profit enterprises and operate gaming machines to support their reason for being - be it sporting, charitable, social or community based," president Leon Wiegard said. He said gaming machines raised taxes for the Government, covered the club's wages and operating expenses and "anything that is left is returned to the community". "The broader Clubs movement makes an annual social contribution of more than $1 billion a year in Victoria and consisted of community donations, subsidised access to facilities and volunteering."

A ground-breaking project combines the might of Casey's choirs singing out against family violence. You're the Voice is led by Jonathon Welch, the founder of Choir of Hard Knocks and Voices of Casey community choirs. The project was launched at Dandenong RSL on 10 October with a soaring choral rendition of You're the Voice made famous by exDandenong singer John Farnham. The lyrics once penned as a Vietnam War protest were equally pertinent to family violence, Dr Welch said. "We're all someone's daughter/ We're all someone's son," he recited. "How long can we look at each other/ Down the barrel of a gun?" Dr Welch and several members in the Casey choir were touched by family violence.

At age 60, Dr Welch says he is bringing up two nephews after rescuing them from an abusive household. "I've truly learnt the value of community choirs through my work over the last two decades. "It's more than just singing, it's about friendship, it's about support, it's about everyone caring about each other. "It's about looking around the periphery of our backyard and not just straight ahead." A Voices of Casey choir member told of escaping two abusive relationships. For 45 years she had not sung. Being a member of the choir had "turned my life around", she said. John Wells, president of Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL, said he grew up in a family of eight boys with loving parents that "fought like Kilkenny cats". He saw his father break a chair over his

mother's head, his mum run a hot iron up his dad's arm. "For me, the violence in us all is so close to the surface at times." Mr Wells "looked down a barrel of a gun" at war. "So your words resonate with me. "What you're doing is important. It goes to the basis of a fair go, it goes to the basis of looking after and loving each other." The project involves a series of workshops conducted by Dr Welch and Claire Patti of Australian Voices. It is supported by City of Casey and Dandenong-Cranbourne RSL. Crohn’s Disease patient gets bailed By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong North woman accused of shoplifting more than $10,000 of goods has been freed on bail after arguing prison authorities had failed to properly manage her Crohn's Disease. Jade Emery, 24, proved 'exceptional circumstances' - the highest test for bail - in a hearing at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 8 October. She had already spent 64 days in remand on the charges including burglary while on bail, theft, failing to appear on bail, and possession of anabolic steroids, testosterone and 'ice'. She and her boyfriend were accused of stealing a $3499 digital camera and $1299 security camera from a store room at JB Hi-Fi at Fountain Gate on 7 June. They also bought a $70 toilet at Bunnings Keysborough, removed it from its box and then smuggled out an angle grinder and laser level worth $1294 inside the box, police claimed. They allegedly used a similar method stealing more than $1900 of power tool kits and a

set of bathroom scales from a Bunnings store in Wonthaggi on 2 June. The same day, the couple stole $4389 of game consoles from the rear storeroom of a Big W outlet, police nominal informant Sergeant Shane Arnheim told the court. Emery was also accused of stealing a $1499 Samsung Galaxy Note phone from a David Jones store in Chadstone in November. Defence lawyer Bridie O'Malley said there may be issues of whether CCTV footage clearly identified Emery or the unrecovered stolen goods during the incidents. Police argue that Emery had been identified as a result of police circulars. Emery was found suitable for the CISP supervised bail program, the court was told. She had a "positive" engagement with a CISP program in 2017 before a relationship breakdown triggered her relapse into illicit drugs, Ms O'Malley said. Emery had abstained from drugs while in remand. But her Crohn's affliction had also "flared up" due to a runout of medication and improper diet in prison, Ms O'Malley said.

"It's a bit of a ticking time bomb and it is weighing on her quite heavily." Emery told the court that she had failed to go to court in February because she had been rushed to hospital by ambulance. In granting bail, magistrate Julie O'Donnell relied heavily on the "significant" medical issues. She also noted stable accommodation being offered by close relatives. On the other hand, she noted Emery had 13 pages of criminal history, had failed on two community corrections orders and was accused of "sophisticated" thefts. As part of Emery's bail, she was ordered to report daily to police, comply with CISP, obey a night curfew, not attend shopping centres and not to associate with the co-accused boyfriend. She will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 29 October.

A man has been charged with trafficking heroin after a police raid of a home in Athol Road, Springvale. A Victoria Police divisional response unit allegedly seized about 20 grams of heroin, a shotgun cartridge and small amounts of GHB and cannabis during the raid about 8.10am on 8 October. The 24-year-old Springvale man was arrested at the scene and charged with trafficking and possessing heroin and other ammunition and drug possession charges. He was bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates’ Court on 14 December.

Victim bashed in street robbery Two males have bashed and robbed a victim on Princes Highway, Dandenong early on Sunday 7 October. The victim had been walking about 5am when the robbers emerged from behind a car. One of the offenders grabbed the victim by his T-shirt and punched him in the face. The second robber joined in and punched the victim’s face. During the scuffle, the victim dropped his phone and wallet, which were stolen by his attackers. A Hampton Park woman is one of seven people arrested and charged as part of an ongoing investigation into an Outlaw motorcycle club. Detectives from Echo Taskforce with the assistance of State Anti-Gangs Division, the K9 Unit and uniform police, executed 12 search warrants on Thursday 11 October. The warrants were executed in Hampton Park, Cranbourne West, Glenroy, Carrum Downs, Frankston, Mickleham, Highett, and Truganina,It follows a proactive investigation into the Finks OMCG, relating to drug trafficking, an alleged aggravated burglary in Hampton Park on 9 September and an affray in Kew on 13 July. Police also seized a number of items from the properties including a firearm, ammunition, other weapons and drugs. The warrants follow the arrest of a 33-yearold Frankston man at a property in Karingal Drive, Frankston on 12 September. A 43-year-old South Australian man was also arrest on 25 September in Docklands. They were both charged with a range of offences including aggravated home invasion, intentionally cause injury, make threats to kill and unlawful assault. Both have been remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on 23 January 2019. Victoria Police’s Echo Taskforce was formed in 2011 to identify the criminal activity undertaken by OMCG in Victoria.

Caring for everyone By Cam Lucadou-Wells The sacrifice of unpaid carers is too readily overlooked. Not that Greater Dandenong couples Faye and Graham Cain and Gary and Leonie Chirgwin would think of their care for their adult sons with Fragile X Syndrome over the past 50 years as a sacrifice. "We love them as much as anybody does for their kids," Mr Cain says. Ms Cain says she's been reluctant to send sons Damien and Raymond both with Fragile X Syndrome even into respite. "I don't mind," she says. "They're mine." They've endured ostracism from family and friends, as well as misguided hurtful advice from teachers and doctors. Mr Chirgwin recalls a doctor telling him that son Adam would not live past 10 years old. "He has just had his 50th birthday." Adam was not 'meant' to be able to write but recently sent an email on his iPad to his father: "Hi Dad, How you going?". "Just talking about it nearly makes me cry," Mr Chirgwin says. Along the way, the couples have become supports and friends for each other. Their sons have kicked on into employment and sports but things would have been easier with more access to support and information in the past, they say. "No one came knocking on the door and said I've heard you had a handicapped child, this is what we've got available for you," Ms Chirgwin said. There is an estimated 8000 unpaid carers in the Dandenong electorate, and 736,000 across the state. They care for loved ones with a disability, mental health condition, chronic illness or are ageing.

Ms Chirgwin used her nursing training to look after Adam, but her career fell by the wayside. Getting back to work one night a week even made a world of difference. It was a form of respite. Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams who is Parliamentary Secretary for Carers and Volunteers grew up in a family of eight children - three of whom had intellectual disabilities. She was involved in a recent $50 million carers package by the Government that helps support carers financially and emotionally. It includes 100,000 extra respite hours a year, expanding to carers of someone with a mental illness.

There is also half-price public transport fares, a $4 million boost for carer peer support groups and support for school students who juggle being carers at home. Ms Williams said the peer support groups were important because the "best source of information and support for carers is often other carers". "We reduce social isolation, connect carers to information sources and give them some downtime in a non-judgemental environment." The package also targets young carers, often overlooked as carers of siblings or parents with special needs. "They often carry a lot of extra responsibilities at home," Ms Williams said. "Sadly, young carers sometimes go unrecognised in education environments, and they are often in need of more support to help them stay in school."

Woodman’s delicate arts By Cam Lucadou-Wells Can you imagine a time when Noble Park was a treasure trove of rare and wondrous orchids, flowers and other native flora? It would be little more than a dim memory if not for the deft watercolours of the late Fred Woodman. Mr Woodman's family will formally donate more than 200 of his botanical paintings and sketches to the National Herbarium of Victoria at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne on 16 October. The collection includes more than 95 portraits of species that have dwelled locally, such as trigger plants, greenhood and tiger orchids, banksias and flax-lilies. They are immortalised by Mr Woodman's sure brush-strokes. His great-niece Sandy Brightman lived in a dwelling next to him on the family property, while many of these works were produced. "He was so meticulous in everything he did." In his final days in 2016, Mr Woodman expressed a wish that his illustrations would be available for botanists, researchers and for all those with an interest in natural history. The family have generously donated copyright for the Royal Botanic Gardens to use and share the artworks. There was no request for royalties. "It wasn't what Fred was all about," Ms Brightman said. "His wish was that the works would not be lost. "They are now on record forever." What Mr Woodman was also about was natural conservation. There's a classic tale of him leading a yearlong protest against a new railway station on the last habitat of the snake orchid. The habitat wasn't saved but Mr Wood-

man provided a calendar with a painting of the flower to the councillors responsible. For the next year, they would be reminded every day of what they had done, he said at the time. He was born and raised in Noble Street, Noble Park. He lived on the same property for his entire 88 years. From a young age, his talent as a painter and a pianist was heralded in the Dandenong Journal. He loved the simple self-sufficient life growing his own produce, making his own clothes, easels and art bags. "I remember how quirky he was," says Ms Brightman, who wears an interlocking chain necklace that he crafted from a single piece of wood. "He was always busy doing something. I

can't remember the TV ever being on." Botanical artist and colleague Heather Duggan deeply admires the craft of Mr Woodman's donated portraits. "His love comes through. You can see the love in his painting." Mr Woodman was also one of the founders of the long-running Noble Park Community Art Show, which opens on 19 October. The 2018 show is bursting with more than 700 entries, including from aged-care residents and school students. It will be launched on Friday 19 October, 7pm at Noble Park Community Centre, Ross Reserve, Noble Park. It is also open on 20-21 October, 10am-4pm. 20 years ago 19 October 1998 Footbridge boost for village

The old picturesque fishing village of Tooradin became a step closer for visitors when a new footbridge was installed by the City of Casey and a family business Dandenong Mobile Cranes. A crew lowered a footbridge into place across a spillway to give visitors and residents easier access to parking grounds and picnic facilities. Operation Lowering was carried out early last Monday when an 80 tonne Demag mobile crane was used to complete the work. Mr Grant Evans of Dandenong Mobile Cranes said it took an hour to lift the timber bridge, weighing 4.5 tonnes into place. Mr Evans father Mr 'Snow" Evans 60 has been in the crane industry for 40 years and the company has operated for the past 7 years. "We worked on the Melbourne Docklands project the Melbourne City Link project and we do jobs big or small" Mr Grant Evans said. "We also

did a lot of work when the Dandenong Plaza Shopping centre was being built."

5 years ago 14 October 2013 It's none of our business but ... Dandenong Plaza will become a sea of blue when "not quite cooked" cops flood the centre this month. For the first time in Dandenong uniformed Victoria Police Academy recruits under teacher supervision will interact with shoppers and traders for about five hours to practice the skills they learnt in the classroom. Dandenong police will connect with the community about Neighbourhood Watch and proactive policing during the exercises on 17 October. Compiled by Dandenong & District Historical Society

Fires sparked child fears The late Jack Johnson was the author of When The Clock Strikes, a fascinating account of growing up in Dandenong, his years tending to the city's pipes and drains as a plumber and bringing up a family with wife Frances in their beloved home in Macpherson Street. We went through the Black Friday bushfires in 1939, which were among the worst on record. We were returning by train after spending time at the beach at Half Moon Bay. The old fire bell on the wooden tower on Robinson Street hill rang for about three days. Mum's side of the family went through some of the worst of these fires in Gippsland and Wood's Point. Throughout Victoria 71 people lost their lives and 650 houses were destroyed. A black pall of smoke hung over Dandenong for a week and with the eerie sound of the continuous bell tolling, it became one of our most frightening childhood memories.

BACK JACK JOHNSON Mum and dad were close friends of the Thompson sisters who were also nursing sisters. They ran Murray House private hospital for Doctor Langley. It was a large Victorian-styled weatherboard house with a veranda across the front and along the right side. It sat on the hillside among tall trees on the corner of Thomas and Scott streets. From Thomas Street a brick path led up wide steps to the veranda and front door and continued around the corner to the entrance

on the Scott Street side. When Doctor Langley lived there it was called Holland House. Eventually a new clinic extension was built at the back of the house. It was on the corner of what became Oldham Lane with its frontage to Scott Street. The lane was named after Alf Oldham who was one of the Murray House doctors. He lived in Robinson Street near Rodd Street. Holland House gave way to a commercial building which is on the site today. Alongside Murray House as you walked towards Walker Street were many substantial weatherboard houses, many still occupied by their original families. There was another weatherboard home used as a private hospital further down Thomas Street called St Helen's. It was on the opposite side of the road, across Walker Street, and down past the Boo-

merang Picture Theatre. It was later extended out to the edge of the footpath and became an electrical appliance shop and contracting business. The owner was a lifetime mate of mine. That site would in later days become part of the new State Electricity Commission Building. Next to St Helen's, beside what is now Cameron Lane, was the Victorian weatherboard house of the Cameron family. It was built on the site of the original Dunn's Hotel, established in the 1840s. On the other side of Cameron Lane and fronting Thomas Street stood the old bakery and attached to it by a covered walkway was the cake shop and cafe on the corner of Foster and Thomas streets. This area and McMahon's antique shop and other shops around the corner in Foster Street would once have been the paddock and garden of Dunn's Hotel.

Dangerous driver on ice By Cam Lucadou-Wells An erratic unlicensed driver with "enlarged pupils" and five grams of 'ice' in her unregistered car has nearly caused a head-on crash while crossing over double white lines, a court has heard. Serena Greco, allegedly unsteady on her feet, claimed her dangerous driving was caused by a lack of sleep shortly after the near-miss on Belgrave-Gembrook Road, Avonsleigh at 8.40am on 24 March. Her car contained drug paraphernalia such as deal bags and digital scales; Greco denied the drugs were hers. The mother of four faced multiple counts of

drug possession, driving disqualified and driving an unregistered car, as well as stealing 40 utility lights from a Noble Park North property. Her defence lawyer told Dandenong Magistrates Court on 8 October that Greco had developed an ice habit since a relationship breakdown. A shooting in her backyard caused her to flee from her Noble Park home, the lawyer said. "She had nothing to with her or her family or her associates. "It seemed to be a mistake on behalf of the shooters. No one was hurt." She was then rendered effectively homeless, her lawyer said. She'd since made significant inroads on

drug treatment. She'd also seen psychologist for previously undiagnosed mental health issues behind her "self-medicating" and offending, the lawyer said. However, Greco had dropped out of contact during her community corrections order this year, still owing 110 hours of unpaid work. Magistrate Julie O'Donnell noted she'd already given Greco a second chance on the CCO despite further offending. "These are the same submissions when she breached the order in February." Ms O'Donnell was troubled by Greco's dangerous driving that "without question put the community at risk" and multiple CCO breaches. "She would have been told clearly by me that

if she breached this order, she'd end up in jail. "It's a nonsense for me to believe she would now comply on that order." Up until last year, Greco lived a "clean life" employed as an aged-care nurse before her life "fall apart", Ms O'Donnell said. She adjourned the case, requesting proof of Greco's contention that she had passed every thrice-weekly drug screen since February. "She's facing a jail sentence," Ms O'Donnell said. "I don't want people in court to think that clean drug screens will change my view." Greco will next appear at Dandenong Magistrates Court for sentencing on 29 October.

Daytime PSOs promised By Cam Lucadou-Wells

Dandenong railway station will be guarded by daytime Protective Services Officers (PSOs), if the Liberal-Nationals Coalition wins the upcoming State Election. The station has been identified by the Coalition as among 20 "daytime crime hotspots". Currently staffed by PSOs during the night, the station would receive an extra shift of PSOs from 10am-6pm. Under the plan, an extra 100 PSOs would be recruited and deployed. Community Safety spokesman Edward O'Donohue said the move would make Victoria safer. "We are going to put more police on the beat and more PSOs at train stations like Dandenong. "If we are going to encourage more people to use more public transport then we need to make sure users are safe and feel safe." According to the Coalition, crime in Dandenong had risen by 7 per cent in the past four years. This included an 89 per cent increase in offences involving dangerous throwing of objects and 17 per cent more assaults of police and emergency services workers. According to Police Association figures there are 190 fewer uniform police in the state than in 2013, the Coalition argues. The Government however claims it has funded 3135 new frontline police to be rolled out by 2021. Ninety-six of them have been allocated to the Dandenong Division, which includes Greater Dandenong and Casey. It has also argued that crime rates have dropped by 9 per cent in Greater Dandenong over the past 12 months. "We've already announced funding for an additional mobile 100 PSOs, to be rolled out across the public transport network," a Government spokesman said. "Of these, 25 new PSOs have already been deployed."

Within five minutes, there was a nose-to-tail bingle. Then a car maneuvered back and across into a mile of stuck traffic to make an illegal U-turn. It’s a “pretty much standard” afternoon on the Princes Highway, Dandenong South says Doveton resident Leigh. He as well as several frustrated motorists spoke to Star News, as part of our Congestion Day visit to our worst traffic choke-spots on 11 October. The east-bound section was “mayhem” from 3pm-7pm, Leigh said. It would routinely take 20 minutes to drive a kilometre from Prince Mark Hotel to the South Gippsland Freeway.

It has been for years.” As a result, he’s seen drivers do the “stupidest things” such as driving the wrong way on an off-ramp, or making illegal turns to escape the traffic quagmire. “It’s pretty much standard around here.” Passing motorist Scott said: “I think one of the major problems is all the (traffic) lights. They stop-start everywhere and it’s all out of whack. “They work but they don’t ... mainly up higher at the (South Gippsland) freeway.” One of our Facebooks reader said the freeway overpass should be widened to three lanes with an extra right-hand turning lane. Another for an eastbound fly-over from the South Gippsland to Monash freeways. In the morning peak, Star News recorded the woes of Heatherton Road drivers, telling of long queues on the Monash Freeway on-ramp. Kelly described “bumper-to-bumper” roads all over Doveton during school drop-off runs. “The more lanes there are (on the M1), the more cars there are. So it doesn’t make any difference.” A Facebook reader said that extra Monash Freeway lanes didn’t help traffic flow on the on-ramps and surrounding roads. Another called for better public transport so more people could leave their cars at home.

Cycling for a good cause Four Dandenong High School students recently took part in United Energy’s iconic Around the Bay cycling event. Teens Christian, Tamara, Nyaluak and Casey were among more than 10,000 cyclists who took part in the event and rode to raise money for children’s education charity The Smith Family. The event took place on Sunday 7 October and saw the four students and two teachers take part in the 50km ride. The six riders set off from Albert Park before making their way to Elwood, then over the West Gate Bridge where they hit Williamstown before returning to the finish line at Albert Park. Dandenong High School Health/PE Learning Leader Ryan Anderson explained that the students took part in the event as a component of The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, which is a youth development program. The program empowers all young Australians aged 14 to 24 to explore their full potential regardless of their location or circumstance. There are three levels of ‘Awards’ (Bronze, Silver and Gold), and to earn an Award, each young person must learn a skill, improve their physical well-being, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure in a new environment. Mr Anderson said that the program encourages students to become good leaders and take ownership of their actions and projects. Along with the Dandenong High School community,

TAFE campuses across Victoria, including Chisholm, will help to train and educate a skilled workforce to underpin growing industries, through the Victorian Government’s Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative. For Rachael Delaney, this represents the chance to study and gain valuable qualifications where the demand for skilled workers is strongest in local industries. Through Free TAFE, the Victorian Government will cover tuition fees for 30 priority TAFE courses and 20 pre-apprenticeship courses from 1 January 2019 for eligible students. Ms Delaney plans to enrol in the Diploma of Nursing. Ms Delaney always had a strong interest in health and nursing, but having left school at 15 years of age felt that it was not achievable. Course costs were also a major concern. “I’ve been hairdressing for 19 years. I’ve always seemed to have had at least two jobs at a time and have even juggled three at a time to

provide for my family,“ she said. TAFE has allowed Ms Delaney to pursue nursing, which is not only an interest but also pays much better, meaning that she won’t have to work multiple jobs. Course costs are considerable and she agrees that Free TAFE makes an education accessible. Chisholm is now taking enrolments for Free TAFE courses that begin in 2019. Chisholm is offering most of the courses on the Free TAFE list. These include Community Services, Justice, Accounting and Bookkeeping, Disability, Mental Health, Youth Work, Cyber Security, Plumbing, as well as Building and Construction. Demystifying vasectomy

Autumn Place park opening Doveton's newest park has been opened as part of the ongoing Autumn Place Family and Community Centre project. At the opening, Dandenong MP Gabrielle Williams said the park would provide a "muchneeded community space for families". Local Government Minister Marlene Kairouz said such projects were required in the fast-growing outer suburbs. "That's why we're investing in local projects that will benefit local residents for years to come."

The MPs, Casey's mayor Geoff Ablett and councillors also inspected the under-construction community centre adjoining the park. It will contain a kindergarten for four-yearolds, maternal and child health services and a space for community groups and services. The park and community centre form a $4.675 million project joint funded by the State Government ($3.6 million) and Casey Council ($1.075 million). The community centre is expected to be complete by December.

Not many people are aware that November 14 is this year’s World Vasectomy Day. The event started in 2012 in Australia and has been gathering pace ever since. Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic said that the idea behind the day is to demystify vasectomy and encourage men to come forward "for what is the simplest and safest form of contraception." “A lot of rubbish is written and spoken about vasectomy,” Mr McCahy said. “All sorts of techniques are described such as ‘no scalpel’, ‘open-ended’ and ‘minimallyinvasive’. It does not really matter which technique is used as long as it is effective with very few complications. “As with most operative procedures, it is better to see someone who is experienced and can deal with any problems that arise. I would routinely advise any patient to avoid a general anaesthetic if it is possible as recovery is much quicker, so I perform the majority of my vasectomies with local anaesthetic.” Mr McCahy said that men should be aware that the procedure is irreversible and that additional contraception is required for a few months (until the semen is clear of sperm). “There is a very small failure rate (much lower than the pill) and there is a small risk of chronic testicular pains which can be tricky to treat,” Mr McCahy said. “Don’t let that put you off and think about joining the thousands of men who are taking the snip.” Philip McCahy is also a consultant Urologist at Casey Hospital in Berwick. Renewed optimism for Rangersâ€™ season By Hayley Wildes DANDENONG RANGERS WNBL SEASON PREVIEW It's that time of the year again - the WNBL is back and the Dandenong Rangers have put together a roster that should have their fans extremely excited for the season ahead. After a 2017/18 season that never really clicked into gear and finished with a disappointing 7-14 record, the Rangers have built a team that appears well-placed to bounce back this season. The Rangers tipped-off their season on the road against the reigning champions Townsville Fire yesterday (Sunday) and will return to Dandenong Stadium for the home opener against Sydney Uni on Friday, 19 October from 6.30pm. Dandenong has a roster boasting plenty of stars, including the likes of Tessa Lavey, Rachel Jarry, Bec Cole, Sara Blicavs, Kayla Pedersen (import) and the final two pieces added to the roster; Stephanie Reid and import Betnijah Laney. Tessa Lavey will enter the season off the back of a FIBA World Cup campaign in which she helped the Opals claim a silver medal in an outstanding result for Australian basketball. The speedy point guard will have a massive role to play with her sublime playmaking and defensive tenacity. Another exciting point guard for Rangers fans to keep an eye on is Stephanie Reid. The Victorian has spent the past four years dominating American Division 1 college basketball for the Buffalo Bulls. She leaves the Bulls as the all-time leader in assists and her new Dandenong teammates will revel in her ability to make the right play and deliver pin-point passes. The additions of Rachel Jarry and Bec Cole will be a huge boost for the Rangers. Jarry, a two-time Olympian and former Minnesota Lynx player in the WNBA, played her junior basketball with the Rangers and will bring leadership and tough play to the line-up.

Her offensive firepower and do-it-all game will add another dimension to the Rangers. Sara Blicavs is an accomplished player and while she was on the roster last season, a ruptured ACL in November saw her miss the majority of the season. Blicavs will likely miss the start of the season, but will return at some stage in what will be a massive boost for the Rangers. When Blicavs is fully healthy, she can be one of the most dominant players in the league and a force to be reckoned with on both ends of the court. Dandenong's two American imports; Kayla Pedersen and Betnijah Laney will both play key roles. Pedersen returns to the Rangers after averaging 11.1 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.5 as-

sists per game last season. Her ability to guard the best bigs in the competition is invaluable. Laney returns to the WNBL after stints with Perth in 2015/16 and Bendigo last season. Earlier this year, she played for the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA, averaging 2.7 points and 1.7 rebounds in 9 minutes of game time. She is a tremendous athlete and will bring aggression and size on both ends of the court. Returning players Carley Mijovic and Tayla Roberts will be looking to build on strong 2017/18 campaigns and both players can score in the paint and bring down plenty of rebounds. Coach Larissa Anderson possesses a squad that looks capable of challenging the upper echelon teams in the WNBL. Health will be crucial and with plenty of new pieces, integrating everyone into roles within the system may take some time, but if it all clicks, the Rangers will be a tough team to handle.

D-day is looming for Team 11 By Nick Creely With an announcement imminent on the ALeague expansion, Team 11 can't do much more to become one of two new teams scheduled to join the national competition in 2019/20, according to Team 11 project officer Matt Windley. Windley - who left his job at the Herald Sun in March this year to take up the full-time role with the south-east bid - said they can only sit and wait for the verdict, which is expected in late October to early November. "I went through a really stressful period, and not just with work but also in my personal life, having my second child, and with the deadline approaching, it was absolutely crazy," he said. "In the last few weeks, I've just had this sense of calm, in a strange way. "I feel like I probably should be getting more stressed, and it's not that I don't care. "I wanted to do everything possible to get this bid over the line, and personally, I feel like I've done that. I know councils and investors feel the same way." Windley said that a potential A-League side in the south-east - with a stadium in the heart of Greater Dandenong, an administration base and community facility at Casey Fields and ties with the Cardinia Shire - would do wonders for the growing region. "This bid has a real chance to unite a whole region in a footballing sense," he said. "It's just such an exciting opportunity, and because I'm local, you can draw a triangle from my house, Dandenong Stadium and the Casey Fields base." Windley said that if the result doesn t go their way in the coming weeks, his ambition would ensure he doesn t give up. "I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought about what would happen if it didn t get up," he said. "I don't think anything's off the table - if we get the red light in the coming weeks or months, my passion to seeing this get off the ground doesn't just go away."

Greater Dandenong sporting superstars recognised By Nick Creely The Greater Dandenong council recognised some of the city's sporting elite at the annual awards night on Wednesday 10 October, with winners coming from all across Dandenong. Now in its fourth year, the awards are aimed at recognising the contribution of people within the Dandenong sporting community, including those who provide opportunities for others to participate in sport. Dandenong Thunder's superstar striker Brandon Barnes was crowned the Male Athlete of the Year, in a season that will again push his name up in lights for a lucrative A-League contact. Barnes - who also re-signed with the Thunder for next season - scored 22 goals this season in the top flight of Victorian soccer (the most in the competition), to completely dominate, and is building an enormous reputation that is only going to continue building. Among the other awards on the night, Dandenong Casey Titans' Jessica McCulloch took home the Female Athlete of the Year, which is a huge achievement for the Special Olympics program, while youngster Jennifer Audy from St Anthony's Primary School in Noble Park was awarded the Junior Athlete of the Year for her superb year in athletics. Greater Dandenong mayor Cr Youhorn Chea congratulated the winners in all 11 categories. He said the awards, held at Dandenong Basketball Stadium, recognised everyone from local athletes to volunteers, clubs and coaches. "Sport is a great equalizer in our community. Panthers downed by the Dons in Round 2 By Nick Creely A middle order collapse provided the catalyst for Dandenong’s loss to a talented Essendon side at Shepley Oval on Saturday. In the Round 2 Victorian Premier Cricket contest, the Panthers were unable to keep up the momentum of the season opener the week before. The Bombers got off to a handy start with James Seymour (20) and Aaron Ayre (34), before quick James Wilcock (3/45) picked up two wickets in two balls, first snaring Seymour before castling the stumps of Aaron Shellie the very next ball. But the visitors steadied through the class of Ayre and Michael Hill (51), who compiled a vital 72-run stand before spinners Akshat Buch (2/49) and the unlikely wicket taker Tom Donnell (1/19) snaring the pair and once again putting them on the back foot. It seemed like a routine win for Berwick was on the cards in the DDCA’s Turf 1 competition. Something stunning would’ve needed to happen for North Dandenong to recover from 4/68 to chase down the Bears’ 250 in their own backyard. Enter Akshay Ballal (110), the Maroon import with a point to prove. In an exquisite knock that not only resulted in a century on debut for the club and in DDCA Turf 1 cricket, he secured a win from the clouds for his side in an incredible, breathtaking knock that actually ended in controversy. When Muharjithan Thedchanamoorthy was dismissed, the scores were tied with the Maroons finishing on 250, but a recount, after the scorebooks didn’t add up, found that the visitors actually won, scoring 253. But it was the sublime effort of the Maroons’ new recruit that was the big talking point, flaying a highly rated Bears bowling side to all parts after steering them out of trouble. It’s a massive result in the opening round of a long season, and one that could be a catalyst for the revival of the Maroons. Buckley Ridges, meanwhile, made its run chase against St Mary’s look almost easy at times down at Park Oval. Chasing an imposing 284 for victory, champion opener Daniel ‘DJ’ Watson (82 off 62 balls) completely blitzed the Saints, belting six sixes and seven boundaries. DJ - the most destructive batsman in the DDCA - picked up where he left off in his brilliant 2017/18 season, putting on 122 runs for the opening wicket with reliable batsman Jayson Hobbs.
