He's been dubbed Super Sam, and this pintsized Pakenham pre-schooler is going to take on the Medibank Melbourne Marathon for a noble cause.

Sam, 3, has been diagnosed with mild Cerebal Palsy, but that hasn't stopped him from living large.

With the support of mum Bree Bartlett and the Cerebal Palsy Education Centre (CPEC), Sam hopes to make a big impression, He and Archer - featured in the PakenhamBerwick Gazette last week - are both fundraising for CPEC. Mrs Bartlett said she is extremely proud of Sam's progress in the eye of adversity.

"We're extremely excited for him and so proud of him," she said. "When he started at CPEC he wasn't even walking and since then he has come a long way. He's an inspiration to all of us."

According to Mrs Bartlett, Sam's condition puts him at an even higher risk because he is still able to manoeuvre.

"It makes him really vulnerable to falling and hurting himself," she added.

Joined by siblings Lilly and Harry, Sam will undertake a three kilometre leg of the famous trek.

"We'll carry him if he gets tired or sore and help him out as much as we can," Mrs Bartlett said.

Sam was diagnosed at the age of two after falling short of his developmental milestones.

Since being at CPEC, he has learnt to walk and can even navigate stairs - a remarkable achievement considering his age and condition.

Grand Prix Park gets tick Grand Prix Park at Frasers Property Australia's Berwick Waters community got a big thumbs up from families at a special launch event on Saturday, 6 October.

Hundreds of residents, including youngsters on bikes, trikes and scooters turned out for the event, enjoying their first blast around the park's Grand Prix inspired bike track, playground and picnic facilities in perfect weather.

Hungry crowds were kept well fed with food trucks and a sausage sizzle courtesy of the Berwick Scouts while children stayed entertained with a jumping castle and face painting station.

Frasers Property Australia residential Victoria general manager Sarah Bloom said the day was a great success.

"Creating an outdoor space that would really capture children's imagination and encourage them to get outdoors and be active was one of the aims of Grand Prix Park so it was encouraging to see so many children enjoying the track," she said.

"The sunshine certainly helped make the day a real family-centred celebration."

The park has been built in the community's College Green precinct and is open to Berwick Waters' residents and the wider area, with a variety of play and leisure spaces for children and adults.

The track weaves through different 'experiences', from a race through the 'Black Forest' zone based on the famous Hockenheim F1 track in Germany's Rhine Valley, to a snake run zooming down the grassy hills in the northern reaches, and adrenaline-pumping dips across the start/finish line.

The sprawling park also features a communal space for BBQs and picnics, grassy slopes overlooking the track, informal nature trails through existing trees and sensory plants, pedestrian paths and grassed kick-about spaces.

Launch for Casey writers story project

Lack of planning for local roads

Writers Victoria is launching its Casey Writers Project at Bunjil Place Library on Friday 12 October with 'The Art of Story', presented by acclaimed Australian author, Arnold Zable.

"Writers Victoria recently surveyed residents of Casey about their writing needs and we have formulated a series of workshops to guide Casey writers through the development of their stories," Writers Victoria director Angela Savage said. "We're thrilled to deliver the workshops in collaboration with Bunjil Place Library."

City of Casey mayor, Geoff Ablett, said council was proud to be able to support organisations to deliver arts opportunities and activities for the Casey community through the Arts Development Funding.

"Council embraces arts and acknowledges the positive contribution that the arts make to creating vibrant, connected and healthy communities," he said.

"We are excited to see how Writers Victoria put their funding to good use to encourage, unite and support our residents of all ages who love to write."

The Casey Writers Project is a three-year series of workshops, clinics and salons.

The first instalment of the project, 'The Art of Story', is a free, two-hour event, starting at 1.30pm on Friday 12 October at Bunjil Place Library.

Upcoming workshops include 'Starting on the Path to Publication', on Sunday 11 November, and 'Beyond the 3 Act Structure', on Sunday 25 November.

Workshops in the first year of the Casey Writing Project are free but bookings are essential.

By Jessica Anstice Too much development and too little spending on infrastructure seems to be the main issue revolving around congestion on Clyde Road and surrounding roads.

Hampton Park resident Angelo Groza and Narre Warren resident Zachary de Silva are sick and tired of the bottleneck along Clyde Road.

Both are students at Federation University Berwick Campus and often find themselves caught up in traffic on their way to, and from university.

"It just takes forever to move the smallest distance. They need to find a way to de-clog the road; it's absolutely atrocious," Mr Groza said.

"It can be dangerous and unfair if someone is injured at either 9am or 3pm as it takes forever to get to the hospital if they need to travel along Clyde Road, it could be critical."

Mr de Silva said, "Obviously the level crossing needs to be removed to start with and not just for traffic management control, it's also a safety issue.

"A lot of people get hit and there are a lot of hear misses at level crossings. They need to

send the traffic either over or under; that's a logical solution.

"The traffic also causes severe road rage. It's a big issue, a lot of people get frustrated and sometimes parents may take it out on their children."

Mr de Silva said the traffic congestion can impact general wellbeing.

"Productivity is important these days and people are wasting a lot of time stuck in traffic.

It cuts out a heap of time," he said.

Clyde North resident John Ramsey drives along Clyde Road to get to and from work most days.

"We now have all these politicians saying they're going to fix the road but it should have been duplicated years ago before all of the housing development began," he said.

"I ride my bike as well and there's no way I can ride it along Clyde Road, it's dangerous and everyone is in such a hurry.

"It seems like every second day there's an accident."

Mr Ramsey shared his concerns about the O'Shea Road, Greaves Road and Clyde Road intersection, in front of Eden Rise Village.

"The left turning lane from Clyde Road onto Greaves Road needs to be longer," he said.

"You will get stuck behind traffic that is turning left and miss the green light if you travel in the turning lane when driving straight along Clyde Road towards Berwick.

"The lights also take forever. There are nearly two sets of lights every 100 metres of each other."

The bus stops along Clyde Road should also be factored in when determining the cause of the congestion, according to Mr Ramsey.

"The bus stops are on the road which delays the traffic," he said.

"They're fixing the road in stages but they should have done it all in one go. It's all about the politicians now."

10 Casey region projects picked

By Jessica Anstice Casey region emergency services, cultural groups, homeless services and sports clubs are among the 10 projects chosen for funding through the state governments Pick My Project initiative.

The most popular Casey project, with 1688 votes, was the landscaping and construction of car parks at the BVV Yun Yang Temple premises.

The non-for-profit ethnically diverse organisation will receive $198,196 in funding.

Completion of the project will provide a well maintained temple premises without having mud, dirt and dust with dedicated parking spaces for elderly and disabled passengers.

The Spirit of Great Lake - Kadawara Yaagaya Production was up there with 1527 votes and will receive $38,850.

The production is a folk opera presented by Sri Lankan Dance Academy of Victoria. Their intention is to share cultural traditions with the public through dance and music.

Narre Warren North Fire Brigade will receive realistic training equipment thanks to the 1097 votes and $21,453 funding and Cranbourne Fire Brigade will receive $50,000 to update their communication media.

With a $50,081 grant, the Sikh Free Food Van will nourish people who are hungry and facing tough times in Casey.

Under the Stars will receive $200,000 to provide 10 free movie events in Casey.

Hampton Park Progress Association will receive $72,772 to run its multicultural night market festival next year.

Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House will receive $200,000 to set up a community garden and food share project with three other community centres in Casey.

Narre Warren South Labor Candidate, Gary Maas said, "More than 285,000 votes were cast in this very first Pick My Project with about $700,000 going to Narre Warren South community groups.

Right lane truck ban on Monash goes permanent More relief is on the way for drivers in the south east, with the state government getting early works underway on the second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade.

The second stage of the upgrade will see an added 36 kilometres of new lanes and is expected to save drivers an additional nine minutes in travel time when complete. There will also be a ban on trucks travelling in the right hand lane.

Premier Daniel Andrews joined minister for roads Luke Donnellan on Wednesday, 3 October to announce the start of early works in Narre Warren.

Smart on-road technology will be installed from the South Gippsland Freeway to the Beaconsfield Interchange, giving drivers live traffic information and managing lanes to get people where they need to go faster and safer.

Drilling is taking place primarily on the Monash Freeway between the South Gippsland Freeway and Cardinia Road to review the ground conditions of where overhead Lane Use Management system gantries will be installed.

The Labor Government has also announced that it will permanently ban trucks from the right-hand lane of the Monash, following a

successful six-month trial to improve safety.

Since the trial ban was introduced crashes have reduced by almost 40 percent.

“Early works are underway, the business case has been ticked off and we’ve shortlisted contractors to build this massive project we’re getting on with the second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade,” minister for roads and road safety Luke Donnellan said.

“These right lane truck bans are reducing crashes, improving traffic flow and helping the 200,000 drivers that rely on the Monash to get home safely.”

Restrictions will continue to apply to trucks travelling in both directions between Huntingdale Road, Mount Waverley and Jacksons Road, Noble Park.

The second stage of the Monash Freeway Upgrade will cost $711 million and is being jointly funded with the Federal Government.

Construction of the new lanes will start next year, with completion expected in mid-2022.

“We said we’d deliver the first stage of this massive upgrade of the Monash, and we have,” premier Daniel Andrews said. “Now, we’re not wasting a moment getting on with the next stage of works so we can get more people where they need to be sooner.”

Casey Cardinia Libraries CEO, Chris Buckingham went back to school on Monday, 8 October, but not as you might think!

Donning his principal's mantle and bearing a flexible timetable, Mr Buckingham attended Oatlands Primary school on as part of the Principal for a Day program.

Mr Buckingham spoke with students and teachers in classrooms and special programs; and met with the school leadership team to discuss how schools and public libraries can work more closely together.

"Principal for a Day is terrific opportunity for business and community leaders to engage with local schools," Mr Buckingham said.

"I really appreciated the chance to work with Wes Holloway and the Oatlands PS and

learn more about how local schools work."

Principal Mr Holloway said, "We are happy to be hosting Chris at Oatlands Primary School - we understand the vital role public libraries play in our community supporting early literacy and encouraging lifelong learning."

The Principal for a Day program is run in state primary, secondary and special schools across Victoria. The aim is to increase understanding and awareness of the vital importance of strong partnerships between schools, business and the community.

It is managed by the Australian Council for Educational Research and is funded by the Victorian Department of Education and Training (DET) through the Bastow Institute of Educational Leadership.

By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren North families will get the worldclass local school their students deserve, with the state government to upgrade Narre Warren North Primary School.

Luke Donnellan MP announced that Labor will invest $4.5 million to demolish Building 1, which includes classrooms and administration facilities.

Its tired old classrooms and office space will

be replaced by a new modern building with the state of the art classrooms and facilities students and staff need to achieve their best.

Mr Donnellan met with members of local pioneer families, the Rae and Montague families, who attended the school along and past school council member Michael Gonsalves to share their stories of the school.

"Across the generations members of the pioneering Rae and Montague families have

been students at this great local school," Mr Donnellan said.

"Upgrades at Narre Warren North Primary School will support the hard work and commitment of teachers and staff and enable students to reach their full potential."

Minister for Education James Merlino said, "Narre Warren North families deserve to know their kids are getting the very best start in life.

With these upgrades, we'll make sure they are."

The state government has announced that it will deliver a massive $2.9 million upgrade to Timbarra P-9 College in Berwick.

Labor will fund to deliver modern learning environments, including new science, technology, engineering and maths facilities.

"This will make a great impact on our school and the broader Timbarra Community.

A Tech Wing will improve student educational outcomes in our area," College council president Adam Whilbey said.

Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said, "Timbarra P-9 College is a great local school and Labor will deliver the state of the art science, technology, engineering and maths facilities the students and their teachers need to achieve their best."

Message from the Premier This week is Fire Action Week, a time for all Victorians to start planning for a long and hot summer ahead.

Low rainfall over winter has dried out much of the state and forecasts from the Bureau of Meteorology of a dry and hot summer means that we need to prepare for an earlier and longer ire season.

Our dedicated emergency services are working with communities, businesses and local councils to reduce the risk for our state.

So please, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about your plans, and make sure you know when to leave and where to go to stay safe.

You can also ind out more information, monitor warnings and check the daily Fire Danger Ratings at emergency.vic.gov.au Taking the right steps now could make all the difference.

Recent bushires – both here in Australia and overseas – remind us of the need to understand our own ire risk.

Prepare for a long season Victorians have been urged to use this year’s Fire Action Week (7-14 October) to consider what an earlier and longer bushfire season could mean for them and their loved ones.

CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation awareness week was a time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, to prepare your property, and to talk to loved ones about what you’ll do to stay safe from fire.

“Making informed decisions is vital to your safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared,” he said.

“This week, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days.”

Following Victoria’s second-driest September on record, forecasts show that there is potential for an earlier and longer fire season in Victoria.

“Taking steps to get prepared before the fire season means you know what to do when you’re at risk,” Chief Officer Warrington said.

“Preparing your property means you minimise the chance of property damage during a fire, even if you plan to leave early, so keep trees, overhanging branches and shrubs to a minimum near your home, particularly around and under windows. A big clean up before the fire season can make a huge difference to the safety and survival of your home in a bushfire.

“You also need to plan and prepare for your safety. Pack important documents, photos, medications, money and clothes so you can leave easily before a fire starts. Understand your risk and plan ahead. Know what to do on hot, dry, windy days when fires will start and spread quickly. Plan for all situations by talking to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave, where you’ll go and how you’ll get there.

“Make sure you know to check Fire Danger Ratings on the VicEmergency website and app and get into the habit of checking them daily to understand the fire risk in your area.

“It’s up to all of us to stay informed by using more than one source of information, un-

derstanding the three levels of warnings, what they mean and what you should do.”

Chief Officer Warrington said waiting until the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red puts lives in serious danger.

“Choose the safer option of leaving early and protect yourself and your family.”

“Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts, otherwise you risk driving your through thick smoke, fallen trees and power lines, and face the threat of major delays, traffic collisions, being trapped or worse,” he said.

The vast majority of people living in bush or rural areas should have a plan to leave early.

“Unless your property is fully prepared, you are physically able to work in extremely hot and smoky conditions, you have a storage tank with 10,000 litres of water and special firefighting equipment, and you understand the danger you will face - you should simply not be there during a fire.”

By Narelle Coulter ONE of Victoria’s first zero emission display homes was officially opened in Officer’s Timbertop Estate on Tuesday 2 October.

The home was built by SJD Homes in collaboration with Curtain University, the CSIRO, Sustainability Victoria, SECCA and developer Parklea.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio cut a ribbon to officially launch the 7.3 star rated display.

The display is part of SJD’s Z-Range. ZRange upgrades include double glazing to all windows, quality insulation, solar hot water, a 5 kw solar roof system, draft sealed exhaust fans and an upgraded five star energy rated ducted heating unit.

SJD Homes sales manager Rod Fitzsimmons said the upgrades needed to produce a zero emissions home would cost buyers roughly $5000.

“By using the northerly aspect and making a few changes, we have been able to make this home a zero emissions home and that’s something SJD has been very passionate about,“ Mr Fitzsimmons said.

“A lot of the time in the past people were more interested in the 40 millimetre stone waterfall edging or the $15,000 of Miele appliances. That is now changing. With the massive increase in the cost of living people are really starting to change their attitude. “ We are excited that we are going to be building better homes. They may cost a bit more than standard, but if it is done smartly and correctly with the right research you can actually do it very well.“ Doctor Josh Byrne from Curtain University leads a national research project into zero energy housing.

“Zero energy housing is about how we can design homes to be more efficient through looking at orientation, improved

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe.

They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a mid-year break, lessons for their learners continue.

By Russell Bennett and Hayley Wildes WEST GIPPSLAND CRICKET ASSOCIATION REVIEW - ROUND 1 The bulk of the attention on the WGCA's Premier division was focussed on two games in particular on Saturday, with Pakenham, Devon Meadows, Clyde and Tooradin all attracting plenty of intrigue.

The Lions have welcomed back favourite sons Ben Maroney and Jack Ryan, but lost inspirational leader Dom Paynter to a knee injury sustained during the footy season.

In his place is star recruit Dale Tormey, who took no time settling into his new side and new competition.

The Panthers, meanwhile, have plenty to prove since winning their way up to the Premier division for the first time.

On Saturday, it was the Lions who emerged victorious - amassing 7/237 from their 40 overs thanks to sparkling knocks from Maroney (93) and Tormey (77).

The Panthers showed plenty of spirit in their reply - led by player-coach Scott Clark with 70 in the middle order - but ultimately fell short, restricted to 9/186.

Clark has only recently returned to Australian shores after a stint playing in England, and he hit the new WGCA season in immediate form.

A number of his team mates got starts, but struggled to capitalise against an experienced Pakenham attack.

Pakenham skipper Rob Elston was pleased with his side's first-up hitout to open the season, admitting they'd played 'October cricket' - a nod to the improvement they're capable of making between now and March.

"The way that Ben and Dale batted was exceptional - they didn't do anything extraordinary or out of the box, they just hit the loose balls and rotated the strike really well," Elston said.

"I think we missed a bit of a trick in the last 10 overs maybe trying to be too aggressive.

"But to get 237 on the board in a one-dayer you put yourself in a good position."

Meanwhile at Clyde, the Cougars seemed to mount a particularly competitive total batting first at home - reaching 8/195 from their 40 overs against Tooradin.

Keeper-batsman Kiefer Peries, the skipper of the side in his first year back at the club, led the way with the willow with a composed, patient 63 but wickets continued to fall around him just as batsman got started.

Tooradin's bowlers struggled for consistency in their line and length through the opening stages of the Clyde innings, but two bowlers in particular stood tall - Brayden Browne (2/29 off six), and the economical Bailey Lownds (1/25 from his eight).

But it was the Seagulls' reply that really made onlookers stand up and take notice. After losing opener Andrew Proctor in the opening over at 1/1, Russell Lehman (98 not out) and Cal O'Hare (90 not out) were simply sensational in their match-winning 198-run, second wicket stand. The pair would have given a couple of combined chances at the very most as they dispatched the ball to all parts, including some towering sixes off the bat of O'Hare - one of which landed on the roof of the clubrooms.

Clyde's bowlers seemed powerless to stop the pair as they chased the Cougars' total down inside 37 overs.

In other Premier matches, Cardinia survived a few early hiccups in their chase to ultimately defeat Merinda Park by two wickets with around 10 overs to spare.

Batting first at Donnelly Reserve, Merinda Park was rolled for just 100 in the 33rd over with star opener Daniel McCalman (24) the only one to pass 20 as new Bulls recruit James Giertz snared 4/25 from his eight overs and spinner Ryan Little took 3/16.

But the Bulls lost a host of early wickets in their chase, including skipper Alex Nooy (3), Giertz (0), Ben Parrott (10), and another of their new recruits, AJ Walker (13). Chasing a seemingly modest total, they were suddenly 4/41 and then 5/58 before the middle order steadied - thanks in large part to Ricky Campbell's 36.

And reigning premier Kooweerup got its season off to an ideal start with a commanding performance at Denhams Road against Upper Beaconsfield.

Batting first, the Demons reached 8/216 from their 40 overs with new recruit and former Officer young gun Tyler Clark making an immediate impact with a sparkling 85, before rolling the Maroons for just 117.

In the District division, Cardinia had a rough initiation in its season-opening game.

Taking on Cranbourne Meadows, the Bulls stumbled their way to 6/55 and eventually tallied 9/130 as Iftikhar Rauf (3/6) created plenty of havoc.

The Rebels - led by Kulith Rabel (46 not out) and Jahanzaib Athar (42) - reached the target with 15 overs to spare, claiming the win in dominant fashion.

At Nar Nar Goon, the Marygoons timed their run-chase to perfection against Clyde.

The Cougars opening pairing of Warwick Weir (50) and Shane Webster (45) set the innings up brilliantly, while Kane Avard (44 not out) ensured the scoreboard kept ticking over as Clyde tallied a competitive total of 3/180.

The Marygoons' run chase was in trouble early as opener Brannon Harrison was dismissed for a duck, but all other batsmen made solid contributions, and it was Scott Hayes (47 not out) and Matthew Dodman (25 not out) who held their nerve in the final two overs to guide the Marygoons to an important first round win.

Carlisle Park Vikings also claimed a win over Tooradin after restricting the home side to 8/156. Tooradin's Ned Harrison (51) and Ben Mantel (41) soldiered on for the Seagulls as others fell cheaply.

Led by a terrific half century from Amjinder Singh Mann (62), the Vikings claimed the win after chasing down Tooradin's total with five overs to spare.

And Emerald claimed the chocolates in a thriller over Officer, making 6/209 before restricting the Bullants to 189.

Jason Williams sends one down for Pakenham. 185943 In Sub-District, Merinda Park showcased its class as it took care of Gembrook with ease in what was its first outing in the Sub-District division after claiming the B Grade premiership last season.

Josh Phillips (4/12) and Brendan Fairlam (4/27) were ruthless for the Cobras as they bowled the Brookers out for just 108 runs in 31 overs.

Merinda Park was controlled and equally impressive in their run chase as Noel Betreen (41) and Gagandeep Sharma (35 not out) helped the Cobras reach the target in just 15 overs for the loss of two wickets.

In other matches, Pakenham Upper/

Toomuc's bowlers turned things around and led the Yabbies to a strong win over Kooweerup.

The Yabbies elected to bat first and were bowled out for just 117 in 33 overs.

Defending a modest total, Pakenham Upper/Toomuc's bowlers left nothing to chance, demolishing the Demons' top-order batsmen.

At 4/12, Kooweerup was in dire trouble and unfortunately for the Demons, it didn't get any better as Nicholas Kyval (6/11) delivered eight brutal overs to dismiss Kooweerup's top-five batsmen, dismissing the Demons for just 67.

Netball’s hardest workers

By Hayley Wildes Within every successful sporting organisation, there are people who go above and beyond what is expected of them. These individuals do it for the love and the community.

For the Casey Netball Association, Debbie Schramm and Sue Booth have done just that for over 20 years. Both were recognised for their tremendous contributions to the Casey Netball Association at the Casey Demons Netball Club launch recently.

Having a Casey team compete in the Victorian Netball League (VNL) was the dream of both Debbie and Sue, so it was fitting that they received service awards when the newlyformed VNL club was launched.

Both started their respective journeys with the Casey Netball Association (formerly Cranbourne West Netball) in the 1990s and both have worked tirelessly to help Casey become what it is today - a local netball hub with over 4500 registered players.

The two met when Debbie coached Sue’s eldest daughter Rebekah (now Casey VNL president) in the late 1990s and the rest, as they say, is history.

“That’s sort of how our friendship began,” Sue said.

“There are so many parallels in our lives; we’re born four days apart, we’re both oneeyed Collingwood supporters, our mothers’ names are both Jean, and last Christmas we bought each other the same gift without knowing - just some real uncanny stuff.”

Both were vital board members for the better part of 20 years and although they are no longer on the board, they remain key drivers for the Casey Netball Association; Debbie as general manager and Sue as operations manager. pakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

“You sort of just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you probably don’t think about it until you have a day like last Wednesday where you talk about it and start reflecting,” Sue said of her time with Casey.

“We may be getting older, but we still have a lot of knowledge and I know people are grateful for us here and it’s a lovely feeling to feel so appreciated - the award was just lovely.

“Obviously with what has happened at Casey with the VNL licence, it’s a time of transition and it’s a time for new beginnings, but I think the current board is trying to establish that there’s still room for everything and our association’s history is very important.”

The two have become great friends over the journey and help each other in their respective roles.

“We definitely keep each other going,” Sue said.

“It’s been such a challenge for us and we’ve learnt a lot because we didn’t ever think we’d be doing anything like this - we thought we’d just peter off and start looking after our grandchildren, but now we’re as busy as we’ve ever been.”

“We’ve had a lot of rewards out of it and now that our VNL dream is coming to fruition, we want to support that because that was our dream.”

Speaking about the VNL licence, Sue can’t help but smile.

“We still pinch ourselves to be honest,” she said. “(That first game) will be mind-blowing really.”

Debbie and Sue have given so much to netball in the region and you can rest assured that they will be front and centre when the Casey Demons compete in their inaugural season of VNL in 2019.

Team 11 and the City of Casey recently unveiled fresh concepts of a proposed state-of-the-art training facility at Casey Fields that will come to fruition if the A-League bid is successful.

The facility - which is proposed to be $38.8 million - will be split into two sections, with the $18m community facility to be built regardless of whether Team 11 is granted entry into the A-League and W-League.

The second stage, a $20.8m elite training and administration base, is conditional on the success of the licence bid.

Team 11 confirmed that the City of Casey has applied to the Victorian Government for funding to enable the community facility, which encompasses three synthetic pitches, a turf pitch, a floodlight and an eight-change room pavilion.

An application has also been made to the Australian Government towards the second stage, which will be the future administration and training base for Team 11. This includes a

main training pitch, capable of hosting crowds of up to 4000, potentially opening up the possibility of future pre-season, FFA Cup, National Youth League and local club matches.

The shovel-ready Cranbourne East site will begin to take shape later this year, in preparation for the potential kick-off of an A-League club in October 2019.

The additional pitches for community use come at a time when Football Federation Victoria has identified the need to build at least 15 new pitches in the City of Casey by 2026 given the south-east’s population boom.

Casey, one of the fastest-growing councils in the country, already boasts a population in excess of 326,000, with the south-east of Victoria as a whole is home to more than 1.5 million residents.

An announcement will be made on 31 October as to which bids will be granted entry into the A-League and W-League for the 2019/20 season.
