Lynbrook lights up By Brendan Rees A beautiful lantern show lit up the night sky over Lynbrook on Saturday 6 October which attracted a crowd of more than 3500 people at Banjo Paterson Park. The annual Lynbrook Lantern Festival, hosted by Lynbrook Residents Association, and now in its eighth year, led organiser Vanessa Watson to say it was "possibly our best yet". "Kids could paint a lantern that they hang to dry, and at dusk they light up their lantern and go on a lantern walk through the park, led this year by Draco a dinosaur, who was about seven foot tall," she said.

Sam bills us $31k A Casey councillor has cost ratepayers nearly $31,000 in expenses on top of his annual $98,727 mayoral salary. Former mayor Sam Aziz’s expenses during the 2016-'17 financial year included more than $6000 in training and education, about $9000 on IT and communications, and more than $15,635 on a car and travel. The second most expensive councillor was Rosalie Crestani who claimed $8723, followed by Cr Wayne Smith ($7980). Cr Aziz defended his expense bill, saying “It was actually costing me more money to use my own car. “With my car I would be paying my own
fuel, maintenance, registration, insurance, the lease on the car - the whole lot but I would get an allowance. “It would not have cost the organisation any more had I used their car.” Cr Aziz said he paid extra $480 a month out of his “own pocket” to run his own car - which he says was not claimed. “My car did 65,000 kilometres in one year so it’s not just the running costs, but also the depreciation on the vehicle and none of that was factored in.” He said the rest of his travel expenses were related to trips to China “where we’ve actually secured two economic partnerships agreements. I make no apologies for that.” When asked about his expenses in IT, Cr
Aziz said: “How else can I work without having a computer? I get four or five emails per day from residents that want things done in terms of council services.“ “Do I say to people 'Sorry, so I can avoid appearing in the Herald Sun, please send me a note on a leg of a pigeon and make sure it lands at Bunjil Place so we’re not costing the ratepayer?’ It’s just absurd.” Cr Rex Flannery, who claimed only $529 on phone expenses, said: “I don’t believe in wasting money and I don’t believe we should be in council to spend ratepayers’ money on things that are not relevant.” When asked about Cr Aziz’s expense claims, Cr Flannery said: “I’ll let his claims speak for itself. One thing I’ve learnt is not to get into

mudslinging over the councillors.” Ratepayers Victoria vice-president Frank Sullivan said councils needed to be more accountable, with credit card spending to be monitored by the Auditor-General every three months. “It’s our money - ratepayers’ money and we’ve had massive rate increases at the moment and we’re very concerned about the accountability of the so-called rate-capping,” he said. An audit of council’s financial statements and performance statement was conducted by the Victorian Auditor-General’s audit service provider, RSM for the 2016-'17 year. Cr Aziz says he will not put his hand up for the mayoral election at the end of this year.

$2.8m for housing Twenty long term affordable rental homes will be built to accommodate low income families in housing need at Lynbrook. The project, announced on Wednesday 10 October by the Minister for Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation, Marlene Kairouz, is expected to be completed by 2020. The development will feature three onebedroom units, 14 two-bedroom units and three-bedroom units. Funded under the Victorian Property Fund, the units will be designed, developed and managed by Community Housing (Victoria) Limited (CHVL), part of Community Housing Ltd (CHL) Group, Australia's largest notfor-profit community housing provider that already manages a number of social housing properties in the City of Casey. "At CHL we are delighted to be partnering with the government to deliver these much needed affordable housing properties in Lynbrook that are centrally located, close to public transport, schools and shopping complex," CHL's Managing Director Steve Bevington said. The City of Casey is the most populous municipality in Victoria and with that has come a significant housing shortage with a reported waiting list of more than 4,000 individuals or families in the Southern Metropolitan Region. "City of Casey is one of the fastest growing LGA's with an increasing demand for longterm affordable housing so this announcement is very timely and will increase the amount of available properties in the area," Mr Bevington said.

CHL is contributing the land and has been successful in its application for further support in the form of a grant from the Victorian Property Fund, which is providing an additional $2.8 million towards the development. CHL will manage the tenancies and proper-
ties after completion in partnership with local support providers Windermere and WAYSS. This latest social housing project comes in addition to 28 existing properties managed by CHVL in the area that were opened in 2013, and a further eight that were added more recently for women and children escaping domestic violence as part of the State Government's $50 million Rapid Housing Assistance Fund.
Walking for little treasures By Brendan Rees When Amanda Harris fell pregnant four years ago, the first-time mum of Cranbourne West was over the moon. But what happened in the days after Amanda gave birth to little Amelia was more devastating than she or her husband Paul could have imagined. When Amelia was born at 28 weeks and five days, weighing only 705 grams in March 2014 - she was diagnosed with Necrotizing enterocolitis, a disease that develops when the tissue in the inner lining of the small or large intestine becomes damaged and begins to die. "In the end we decided to switch off her life support," says Amanda. "She passed away when she was 21 days old." "We tried for four years to have a baby with no luck; then did IVF and fell pregnant first go." During her pregnancy, doctors told Amanda her she had pre-eclampsia - a disorder where pregnant women can suffer from high blood pressure and kidney dysfunction. She also had Intrauterine Growth Restriction where babies in the womb are smaller than they should be. "That's what caused her to stop growing because she wasn't getting enough blood flow through the cord," Amanda said. "You think once you hit the 20-week mark
everything is going to be fine, nothing is going to happen. "We've been through a whirlwind," she added. "They knew at my 20-week ultra sound that she was small and that she wasn't growing well and nobody told me." Today, the couple have two healthy children and will be taking part in the Walk for Prems at Albert Park Lake, to raise funds and awareness for sick and premature babies. "We decided to do the walk every year in memory of our little girl to help raise awareness things you don't understand that are there until it happens to you," says Amanda. Joining them for the walk will be families from Berwick, Cranbourne and Narre Warren South. Chief Medical Officer and Senior Paediatrician at Latrobe Regional Hospital Dr Simon Fraser said premature birth was on the rise - affecting about eight per cent of births. "There are many reasons for this. They include increasing maternal age, more multiple pregnancies with assisted reproduction, higher rates of maternal diabetes and obesity to name a few," he said. "Prematurity can cause significant financial, emotional and psychological hardship to families and is associated with significant rates of stress and mental health issues for families

Funds raised in the walk will go to Life's Little Treasures, Australia's foremost charity dedicated to supporting the families of babies born sick or prior to 37 weeks gestation. More PSOs on the beat By Brendan Rees More PSOs will patrol Cranbourne Railway Station if the Liberals win the state election in November. Commuters would benefit from a second day time shift of PSOs as part of the additional 100 transit PSOs under a Liberal Nationals Government. At the moment, PSO shifts are from 6pm until the last train. An elected Liberal Nationals Government will introduce a new and additional daytime shift between 10am and 6pm for up to 20 railway stations identified as daytime crime hotspots. The Liberals will work with Victoria Police and The Police Association Victoria to recruit and deploy 100 new PSOs on the new daytime Transit PSO roster. The Liberals say crime data obtained from the Crime Statistics Agency reveals a surge in public nuisance crime in Cranbourne since Daniel Andrews was elected with an overall crime increase of 13.59 per cent and a 47.17 per cent increase in common assault. Further to this, there has been a 33.33 per cent increase in threatening behaviour. Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Edward O'Donohue said despite initially criticising PSOs and labelling them "plastic police," Labor had kept this successful policy. "If we are going to encourage more people to use more public transport then we need to make sure users are safe and feel safe," he said. Police Minister Lisa Neville said the Liberals could not be trusted on law and order: "They didn't fund one extra police officer when they were in Government, and they'll do it again if they get the chance." "We've already announced funding for an additional mobile 100 PSOs, to be rolled out across the public transport network, of these, 25 new PSOs have already been deployed," she said. "We've also changed the legislation so that we could expand their reach and give them more powers so they could help promote public safety across our public transport network."

"We've set ourselves a target of collecting 100 pairs of glasses each month, but the more we can collect, the better because every pair of glasses will make a significant difference," Mr Boucher said. Once glasses are collected, they will be sent to Lions Recycle for Sight in Queensland, which runs a glasses recycling facility that quality checks, cleans and categorises the glasses before being distributed to people in need overseas. Youth mayhem at station By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police were called out to manage an estimated 100-plus unruly youths in Banjo Patterson Reserve, Lynbrook. At least 10 police vehicles, including Public Order Response cars, attended the mass assembly in the Lynbrook park just after 7.30pm on 3 October. They dispersed the youths onto trains at Lynbrook railway station - causing reported fear and bedlam among commuters. A witness described on Facebook of large numbers holding train doors open, screaming abuse and fighting as Protective Services Officers looked on.
"It takes a lot to shock me but I was lost for words. "Train couldn't leave as it couldn't close its doors and (the) poor driver could only toot its horn. "Kids 1 ... Cops 0." A Victoria Police spokesman said they were initially responding to a report of an assault at Banjo Patterson Reserve. "But no victims made themselves known to police and no offences were detected. "The youths were asked to move on, with the majority catching trains at a nearby station. No further incidents have been reported to police."
Another witness followed a large group of youths getting off at Dandenong railway station and being managed by police in central Dandenong until close to midnight. He claims to have seen two youths handcuffed and taken into custody at Dandenong. There were up to 25 police cars involved at Lynbrook and Dandenong, he said. "I've never seen that happen in front of my eyes. "Cops were everywhere. They chased them off to another street and dispersed them. It was like they were playing chasey-chasey with them. "They seemed powerless to stop it."

Slice of prime property arrives at Botanic Ridge By Brendan Rees Sarah Horner may have rolled the dice on this one but it has proven to be a game changer. The Deakin university student brought the world's most popular board game, Monopoly to Botanic Ridge last week. Using stencils, chalk, fixative spray and "heaps of hairspray," Sarah, 23, recreated each of the Monopoly squares onto the footpaths of Browns Road, Smiths Lane, Station Creek Way and Pearcedale Road. Passers-by could even collect $200 as they passed go as they returned from their walk around the block. Sarah, of Cranbourne West says she woke up at 3am to prepare her tools and mindset before venturing out to create her work of art. "It's a bit of fun," she said. "I'm a major big kid so it brought that out in me. "I even got the original plastic Monopoly font."
The six-day project formed part of a university assignment for Sarah who was inspired by Melbourne artist Amy Spiers. "I wanted to explore the idea of space that we live in everyday and the singularities in a contemporary way. "It called on locals to see what casual features made up the area and to view and appreciate it in a new way," she said. Sarah, who is studying arts and education, admits she was worried about the weather. "Because it's such a big project you have to allow a certain amount of time - it could all change with the weather," she said. "I would be out there 10 hours at a time except for work on Saturday." She says she was delighted with the end result which she completed on Wednesday 3 October. Asked if she was exhausted, she says: "Just a bit." "It's good to have that conversation as you walk past," added.

Donning his principal's mantle and bearing a flexible timetable, Mr Buckingham attended Oatlands Primary school on as part of the Principal for a Day program. Mr Buckingham spoke with students and teachers in classrooms and special programs; and met with the school leadership team to discuss how schools and public libraries can work more closely together. Labor pledges $4m By Brendan Rees A re-elected Andrews Labor Government has promised to contribute $4 million towards an upgrade at St Peter's College. The $5.5 million project will include the construction of performing arts centre including theatrette, general learning areas, specialist facilities and associated areas. The upgrade is part of a new $400 million fund Labor will establish in partnership with the non-government school sector to upgrade and build new non-government schools across Victoria. The fund would also support the removal of dangerous asbestos and cladding in nongovernment schools. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said: "We've got a great mix of schools in Cranbourne and only Labor will make sure local families can feel confident that whatever choice they make, they'll have a great local school." An all-abilities tandem bike allegedly stolen from Casey Fields has been found by a Good Samaritan - and all thanks to the power of social media. The $12000 recumbent bike, which is used by people with intellectual disabilities, went missing after callous thieves made their way into a shipping containing protected by a lockbox at Criterium Circuit on Sunday 18 August. The bike is used by people every Wednesday through the All Abilities Cycling Program at the Criterium Circuit. Among other items stolen were bike tools, shelving, electrical cords and leads, club records, spare parts, clothing and two second hand mountain bikes. Program volunteer Bill Upston said he was disappointed that someone would "take it upon themselves" to "disrupt a program that has so much potential." He said the culprits "knew exactly what they wanted." Mr Upston said breaking the news to the program participants about the bike's theft was "probably the hardest when I had to tell them." "Technically the Southern Masters Cycling Club owns all the gear but it really belongs to the people who come to our program. They were very upset," he said. But within four days of sharing a post on Facebook whereby Mr Upston pleaded for the public's help, a Good Samaritan reached out to him saying he had found the bike dumped in bushes near the Clyde North shopping centre. "It was an overwhelming experience to say we got it back. It's so important to the program that we run," Mr Upston said. Detectives from Narre Warren police are investigating and hunting for the culprits. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Warneet's busting for a workable loo By Brendan Rees Fed-up without having a disabled toilet in place at the Warneet boat ramp, residents have taken matters into their own hands. They have set up a portable toilet at the foreshore carpark to cope with "demand." Since its installation in early June, Warneet foreshore committee member Thelma Wakelam says "it has had a lot use." "It has been many years since various groups in Warneet including the foreshore committee have advocated for an all abilities toilet," she said. Neighbouring Blind Bight had a "wonderful toilet," complete with disability access, Ms Wakelam said. "Warneet in contrast has aged toilet facilities, which are a considerable distance from the ramp with no toilets for people with disability anywhere in Warneet," she added. Last year, Mayor Geoff Ablett promised to fix the issue, however said the toilet was on land that fell under the jurisdiction of the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) - not the council. A statement made by Casey Council last week said: "We haven't heard anything from DELWP in response to our advocacy for a new toilet." DELWP Port Phillip Regional Manager Land and Built Environment Programs, Victoria Purdue said there was "well maintained" existing public toilet facilities located at the Warneet Motor Yacht Club, which is about 170 metres away from the boat ramp.
"The redevelopment of existing facilities, or consideration of new facilities, would be considered as part of a broader reserve management plan. DELWP has contacted the committee, which has advised it is in the process of developing a management plan for the reserve," she said. Council had also erected a large sign at the foreshore calling for an "end to the hygiene crisis." Alan Sandford, who runs Al's Boat and Tackle at the ramp and is on the foreshore committee, said the portable toilet was costing the foreshore committee more than a $100 per week to maintain. "That's just to empty it - that's not to hire. Until that's rectified the foreshore committee is out of pocket quite a lot of money," he said. "I was hoping that the City of Casey would come to the party and actually pay for it or pay for the cleaning but we've seen nothing yet. "It's a desperate situation," Mr Sandford added. "We just seem to be hitting brick a wall everywhere; just makes it difficult." Hastings MP Neale Burgess raised the matter in State Parliament on 19 September, saying the lack of a toilet facility posed "not only a hygiene problem but an embarrassing situation for adults and children alike." "I am calling on the State Government to fix this unsightly and unusable public amenity urgently. Victorians of all abilities should have the right to expect a public toilet in this location," he said. Mayor Geoff Ablett has been contacted for comment.

Celebrating in fine style By Brendan Rees Ladies Probus Club of Cranbourne members have celebrated a milestone 30 years of friendship and fellowship. About 35 people attended a birthday lunch held at Amstel Club in Cranbourne on Thursday 4 October. The club was founded in 1988 and of the 50 founding members, only four remain including president Ivy Watson, Edie Tyrus, Merle Watson and Carol Lewis. Past president Arlene Trevethan presented the ladies with flowers and a foundation membership badge to mark the special occasion. A giant traffic headache By Brendan Rees Traffic woes on Thompsons Road, Cranbourne North is continuing to leave motorists at wits end. Residents have voted Thompsons Road as one of the worst congested roads of Star News' Unblock the Gridlock campaign. Janine Kimberley, who lives at The Avenue in Casey estate in Cranbourne North, says it's not uncommon for traffic to banked up along Thompsons Road to Narre Warren- Cranbourne Road during peak hour.
"It's only got worse now they're doing the duplication on Thompsons Road," she said. "I understand they're doing road work but in the meantime it's just terrible. "Any time after three o'clock it's built up, you just sit and wait and wait and wait to get through. It's not great," she said. She was shocked to see a wall of traffic on William Thwaites Boulevard at the intersection of Thompsons Road at 8.30am on Monday 8 October: "I've never ever, ever seen it this bad." Some good news is coming with the duplication of Thompsons Road to be completed by 2019. Up until then, it has made Ms Kimberley's commute from her home to Parkdale "terrible". It normally takes her 25 minutes but after 2pm "it could take me up to an hour an half to get home." Ric Stewart of Clyde North says responsibility should be put back on developers of new housing estates to cope with the huge "influx" of people moving into the area.
"They should contribute to the road widening and making access to their estates and surrounding areas a lot better," he said. "They're bringing thousands of people into the new estates but they're only opening up a small section of road to let people in and out of their estates." He said a 1.5-kilometre trip from Linsell Boulevard to Thompsons Road took him 20 minutes on Monday 8 October. This would normally take five minutes. "You come out of Linsell Boulevard to turn right into Narre -Cranbourne Road and that's a single lane then it opens up to two lanes then it goes back to single lane and it's up through to Thompsons Road." He described the congestion on Thompsons Road as shocking. "I'm retired but when I was working it was a nightmare." Cranbourne North resident Jean Camilleri says she's frustrated by the traffic lights at the intersection of William Thwaites Boulevard and Thompsons Road. "All of a sudden, I don't know what they've
done; they've altered them. Four or five cars used to go around," she said. "Last Thursday I think I had to wait for about four or five turning signals before I could get through, that was really frustrating. It's only been the last couple of weeks. Ms Camilleri says road works on Thompsons Road were making her trips slower. "You can't help that but I think once it's finished it'll be a lot better." Sarah Evans, who lives near The Avenue in Casey estate, had to wait seven minutes at a roundabout on William Thwaites Boulevard before she could turn into a childcare centre to drop off her son on Monday 8 October. She says she avoids Thompsons Road "because I know it's horrible." Berwick Waters mum Lauren Turfboer says school traffic is bad along Thompsons Road. "It's a growing area, it's annoying but you've got to deal with it, what can you do?" she said.

Drivers running the risk By Brendan Rees Impatient drivers are cutting over a footpath to save painful minutes longing for the traffic lights to change while stuck behind a line of cars at a busy Cranbourne intersection. According to Peter Tuckett, owner of Tyrepower, "desperate" motorists were driving across the nature strip at the front of his store to turn left from Camms Road into High Street. "They mount the curb and go around the corner," he said. "It's quite dangerous especially at peak hour. "The worst times are school times about nine o'clock in the mornings and about 3-3.30 in the afternoons. "You would be crazy to go home at four o'clock," he added. Mr Tuckett said his staff could also take up to 10 minutes to go around a small block when test driving vehicles. "It just slows down the process of test driving cars." In the case of Nicole Pickett, she says traffic is so bad she avoid using the road at all costs. "The traffic is a nightmare," she says. "It's bumper to bumper." "If you're caught behind a bus or two you don't get through the lights, you sit through a couple of cycles. "You cannot cross the road safely," she added.

has lived in Casey this is the "worst I've seen the roads." "It's just frustrating the delays," adding traffic can bank up for kilometres on Camms Road. "You restrict yourself from going out at certain times, only if you have to," she said.
Luckily, she says, her kids are older so she doesn't have to do a school run: "I would be dreading it; they would be walking to school." In August, a long-awaited right-turn signal on Camms Road for drivers turning onto South Gippsland Highway opened by VicRoads.
Stop-starts - the South Gippy nightmare
For many commuters, there’s unfortunately no avoiding the notoriously choked arterial, the South Gippsland Highway. Even when Mark Lanyon leaves home at 7am, his work commute from Noble Park to Lyndhurst is overwhelmingly congested. Within 20 minutes, he reaches Dandenong Bypass. Then the last few kilometres via the Bypass and the South Gippy takes at least another 20 minutes. That’s on a good day. At worst, the trip has taken Mr Lanyon 100 minutes. The afternoon peak on the highway starts as early as 2.30pm, when the early-morning shift workers head home. “You’re just going nowhere and just burning fuel. “By the time you get to Greens Road, you’re just finished.” Mr Lanyon believes the highway’s bottlenecks need to be eliminated. It needs to be widened to three lanes “all the way to Cranbourne” - replicating the recent upgrade of the Pound-Abbotts roads section. The level crossing boom gates near the intersection of Princes Highway also has to go. For Greg Hardy, it’s hard to nominate which of the five or six arterials are worse on his way from Cranbourne to his Keysborough workplace. “It’s annoying as hell. “Sometimes you’re sitting there stationary for five minutes at a time, doing nothing.” Mr Hardy hopes that the completion of the Thompson Road upgrade will take traffic off the highway. Kerry Ford’s commute from Cranbourne to Mentone takes up to two hours on weekdays. On Saturdays, it’s usually just 35 minutes. “By the time you get home, it’s like working a 12-hour day.” Over the week, it can be up to 20 hours extra on the road. “I try to use my NavMax every day to try to get an edge - it will pick up if there’s any accidents and I’ll try to get another way. “But it doesn’t matter which way you go the traffic still banks up.” Ms Ford says better public transport would entice more commuters out of cars and onto trains. “I don’t think the roads have grown as fast as the developments have. “I’ve lived all over Melbourne and I’ve never encountered traffic like it. “I wouldn’t have moved out here if I knew it was that bad.” Leanne Chapman travels to Vermont via a 20-minute crawl on the South Gippy. Prepare for a long season Victorians have been urged to use this year’s Fire Action Week (7-14 October) to consider what an earlier and longer bushfire season could mean for them and their loved ones. CFA Chief Officer Steve Warrington said Victoria’s annual fire planning and preparation awareness week was a time to increase your understanding of the fire risk where you live, to prepare your property, and to talk to loved ones about what you’ll do to stay safe from fire. “Making informed decisions is vital to your safety during a fire. Now is the best time to understand your fire risk and get prepared,” he said. “This week, talk to your family, friends and neighbours about the fire risk where you live and make plans for what you’ll do on hot, dry, windy days.” Following Victoria’s second-driest September on record, forecasts show that there is potential for an earlier and longer fire season in Victoria. “Taking steps to get prepared before the fire season means you know what to do when you’re at risk,” Chief Officer Warrington said. “Preparing your property means you minimise the chance of property damage during a fire, even if you plan to leave early, so
keep trees, overhanging branches and shrubs to a minimum near your home, particularly around and under windows. A big clean up before the fire season can make a huge difference to the safety and survival of your home in a bushfire. “You also need to plan and prepare for your safety. Pack important documents, photos, medications, money and clothes so you can leave easily before a fire starts. Understand your risk and plan ahead. Know what to do on hot, dry, windy days when fires will start and spread quickly. Plan for all situations by talking to your family and friends about how you’ll know when to leave, where you’ll go and how you’ll get there. “Make sure you know to check Fire Danger Ratings on the VicEmergency website and app and get into the habit of checking them daily to understand the fire risk in your area. “It’s up to all of us to stay informed by using more than one source of information, understanding the three levels of warnings, what they mean and what you should do.” Chief Officer Warrington said waiting until the Fire Danger Rating is Severe, Extreme or Code Red puts lives in serious danger. “Choose the safer option of leaving early and protect yourself and your family.”
“Leaving early means leaving before a fire starts, otherwise you risk driving your through thick smoke, fallen trees and power lines, and face the threat of major delays, traffic collisions, being trapped or worse,” he said. The vast majority of people living in bush or rural areas should have a plan to leave early. “Unless your property is fully prepared, you are physically able to work in extremely hot and smoky conditions, you have a storage tank with 10,000 litres of water and special firefighting equipment, and you understand the danger you will face - you should simply not be there during a fire.” CFA brigades across the state will be talking to their communities about the local fire risk, how to prepare, and what to do to stay safe over summer. Simple plan could save lives This Fire Action Week, follow some simple planning and preparation tips to make sure you’re ready for the upcoming bushfire season. Prepare your property; it can minimise property damage even if you leave early. Move furniture, woodpiles and mulch away from windows, decks and eaves; Prune tree branches so they are not overhanging the roof or touching walls; Keep grass shorter than 10cm. Regularly remove leaves and twigs; Don’t have plants higher than 10cm in front of windows or glass doors; Before you leave, make sure you remove all flammable items from around your home. Houses have been lost from things as simple as embers landing on a doormat; Check that your home and contents insurance is current and includes a level of cover in line with current building standards and regulations. Most homes in high risk bushfire areas are not defendable on Code Red days. Defending your home is very risky - you could lose your life or be seriously injured.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. Little athletics turns 50 By Brendan Rees Cranbourne's Little Athletics centre has celebrated a golden anniversary - earning a big thumbs up from families. The centre was buzzing with hundreds of members turning out for the centre's 50th anniversary on Saturday 6 October where a cake was also cut to celebrate the milestone. Perfect conditions greeted people for the festivities on the day and youngsters competing on the track and field. President of the club, Michelle Baxter Hanna officially welcomed all new and returning athletes as well as Olympian long jumper Brooke Stratton and Casey councillors Amanda Stapleton and Gary Rowe. "It's a great milestone for any club. As president I am very proud of our team," Ms Baxter Hanna said. "Some lucky athletes were given tips about their long jump techniques from the Olympian," she said. The day also saw some of the club's new sponsors Bendigo Bank and Head Space attend to help kick off the season. Bendigo Bank donated a much needed defibrillator to the club - a portable device the club can take on field trips such as their upcoming relay competitions in Moe. Ms Baxter Hanna said the club aims to project a family-friendly environment, where children can make lifelong friendships, "as well as participate in a sport and do their best." She added number were up with the club's successful Multi Class Team for children with disabilities. "Athletics isn't about winning all the time. It's about setting yourselves goals and doing what makes you feel good within yourself to achieve your own personal best."

Cutting-edge technology comes to Casey Comets score stellar home Casey Tech School in Berwick is just days away from officially opening its doors. Chisholm CEO Dr Rick Ede said the school would be a shared learning facility, delivering a high-tech education free of charge to 21,000 students from 21 secondary schools in the Casey region to help them prepare for the jobs of the future. "That's why the programs on offer emphasise the vital Enterprise and Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) skills needed for the 21st century," he said. Casey Tech School will be located at the Berwick campus of the Chisholm Institute and will focus on growth industries including biomedical technology, health and medical tech, and high-tech manufacturing, production and processing technologies. The new two-storey building will also include workshop areas, a biomed lab, a virtual reality lab, video production studio and a digital media studio. It is part of the Government's plan to boost performance in STEM subjects, including a 25 per cent increase in the number of year nine students reaching the highest level of achievement in maths and 33 per cent more 15-yearolds reaching the highest levels in science by 2025. The Tech School is one of 10 being delivered as part of Labor Government's $128 million Tech School initiative, and is expected to open in mid-2018.

The growing female ranks of the Casey Comets can say goodbye to changing in the back of the car thanks to $250,000 from the State Government's Female Friendly Facilities Fund. The grant will transform the Casey Comets Football Club's outdated change rooms in to a new female friendly pavilion. With over 700 members and 38 teams, the Comets growing number of female players have been struggling with an outdated pavilion. The project will transform four existing change rooms into female friendly facilities and also add two new female friendly change rooms, two umpires rooms, a store room, baby change facilities and upgrade the LED lighting. Minister for sport John Eren made the announcement in Cranbourne on Wednesday, 10 October. Mr Eren acknowledged Casey City Council for its commitment and financial contribution to the project. "Women deserve the same opportunities as men, and with record numbers of women and girls signing up to play local sport, we're making sure our facilities are up to scratch here in Cranbourne," he said. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said: "It's been wonderful to see the Casey Comets grow and welcome more female members, and these new facilities will ensure the club can keep growing as a community hub. "It's no secret that I have been a huge fan of the Casey Comets over the years and I wish them every success."

The race that stops Casey By Russell Bennett The richest ever TAB Cranbourne Cup will have a field to match, as regular racegoers and families alike look forward to the City of Casey's biggest sporting and social event this Sunday. The $350,000 TAB Cranbourne Cup - up from $300,000 - has again attracted a range of truly top-quality trainers, jockeys and their horses for what will be an incredible field on Sunday. Friday night's $100,000 Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate has also received a significant boost in prizemoney - up from the $80,000 previously. An incredible weekend of racing at the Cranbourne Racecourse will all begin in just a matter of hours. Last year's Cup winner, Godolphin star Folkswood, is set to have a tilt at back-to-back titles - this time with an Irish jockey on board. Folkswood backed up a stellar performance at Cranbourne last year with a third-place finish in the Cox Plate to legendary mare, Winx. Berisha, which finished second to Folkswood at last year's Cranbourne Cup, is also set to return for another crack at victory this time around. Group 1 New Zealand Derby winner Vin De Dance - trained by the legendary Murray Baker - is also set to line-up in Sunday's big race, as is local hope Sully, which ran second to Ace High in the Group 1 Victoria Derby last November. Group 2 winner Spanish Reef, trained by Ken Keys also out of Cranbourne, would be another particularly popular winner of Sunday's main event while the red-hot Furrion will be another to watch. Netball’s hardest workers By Hayley Wildes Within every successful sporting organisation, there are people who go above and beyond what is expected of them. These individuals do it for the love and the community. For the Casey Netball Association, Debbie Schramm and Sue Booth have done just that for over 20 years. Both were recognised for their tremendous contributions to the Casey Netball Association at the Casey Demons Netball Club launch recently. Having a Casey team compete in the Victorian Netball League (VNL) was the dream of both Debbie and Sue, so it was fitting that they received service awards when the newlyformed VNL club was launched. Both started their respective journeys with the Casey Netball Association (formerly Cranbourne West Netball) in the 1990s and both have worked tirelessly to help Casey become what it is today - a local netball hub with over 4500 registered players. The two met when Debbie coached Sue’s eldest daughter Rebekah (now Casey VNL president) in the late 1990s and the rest, as they say, is history. 32 STAR NEWS

“That’s sort of how our friendship began,” Sue said. “There are so many parallels in our lives; we’re born four days apart, we’re both oneeyed Collingwood supporters, our mothers’ names are both Jean, and last Christmas we bought each other the same gift without knowing - just some real uncanny stuff.” Both were vital board members for the better part of 20 years and although they are no longer on the board, they remain key drivers for the Casey Netball Association; Debbie as general manager and Sue as operations manager. “You sort of just keep putting one foot in front of the other and you probably don’t think about it until you have a day like last Wednesday where you talk about it and start reflecting,” Sue said of her time with Casey. “We may be getting older, but we still have a lot of knowledge and I know people are grateful for us here and it’s a lovely feeling to feel so appreciated - the award was just lovely. “Obviously with what has happened at Casey with the VNL licence, it’s a time of transition and it’s a time for new beginnings, but I think the current board is trying to establish that there’s still room for everything and our

that our VNL dream is coming to fruition, we want to support that because that was our dream.” Speaking about the VNL licence, Sue can’t help but smile. “We still pinch ourselves to be honest,” she said. “(That first game) will be mind-blowing really.” Debbie and Sue have given so much to netball in the region and you can rest assured that they will be front and centre when the Casey Demons compete in their inaugural season of VNL in 2019. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Demons are on the court By Hayley Wildes In what was a major milestone for Casey Demons Netball, the club officially launched its inaugural season with a celebration breakfast recently at Casey Stadium. Having successfully applied for a licence for the 2019 Victorian Netball League (VNL) season, the Demons will bring elite netball to Casey in the hope of growing the sport for all in the region. With representatives from the Melbourne Football Club, Casey Demons Football Club and many other key supporters and stakeholders from varying community organisations in attendance, the importance of this club to so many people was evident. Melbourne Football Club general manager of football operations, Josh Mahoney, spoke about the passion within the room and how he hopes that translates on court. "To be awarded this licence is a significant moment and if the passion that has already come out today is anything to go by of what this team is going to bring on the court, then I think we're heading for a very successful period of time," he said. "When we were asked to get involved with the bid, for us it was a no-brainer. "First of all it was about what we're trying to do in this region; it's a no-brainer because of the work we're trying to do in the community, it's a no-brainer because of the partnerships we've already got out here in the City of Casey, and it's a no-brainer because we want to build the best programs we can - the best programs and pathways for kids in this region, but also in elite programs." Inaugural head coach Robynn Pym spoke with enthusiasm about what the future holds for Casey Netball. "The opportunity to be a part of this, I just couldn't say no," Pym said.

Registration for the screening day has seen 150 players register, so we're pretty excited." She also acknowledged what this program
means to the region and for the young netballers coming through the ranks. "What it means is that kids can actually be playing netball, playing the game they love and look for a local role model. When you ask
young kids about various elite athletes in the netball world in the Suncorp Super Netball, they don't actually know them personally," she said. "This gives them an opportunity to say 'oh, I saw her down the street at Woolworths and she buys the same things that I buy!' "I think it's really important to be getting girls on the move, getting them in the community and getting leaders out there. It's not just about what we do on-court, it's how we hold ourselves off the court as well and I think when kids can see that, we'll get more and more playing the sport." Pym has been involved with coaching netball for over 25 years and her involvement with the Victorian junior netball talent pathway and local leagues make her the perfect person to lead Casey forward and grow the sport in the region. Most recently, Pym was the senior coach at the Berwick Netball Club in season 2018. "There are so many talented athletes in this area and they're all doing it on their own without a huge, elite high-performance program," she said. "So joining forces with Casey Demons is giving them an elite, high-performance program - and not one where they just show up and play, but where they're actually getting as fit as they can be. "From an on-court perspective, I'm looking for excited players, I'm looking for determination and looking to build a really elite environment. "For me, I'm not just coaching because I want to coach netball, I want to coach for the community - it's just really exciting." With the season kicking off in April 2019, the Casey Demons are certainly already well prepared to make some noise in the VNL.

Similar to the Heat, the Swans struggled to find boundaries and were cautious, but managed to tick over the score to 38 before Aidan Wheeler picked up Maxwell. Not long after, Quirk’s stay at the crease came to an end after dynamic all-rounder Brodie Symons (3/35) got through the gate, and after Michael Wallace also fell victim to Symons, it seemed like the Swans were falling into old habits. Skipper Lachie Sperling (69) and the dangerous Jordan Wyatt (55) lifted their rating, at first weathering the storm and steadying the ship, and then accelerating. The pair swiftly put on a match-defining 107 run stand, with Sperling contributing three maximums and Wyatt one, and knew just when to pull the trigger or knock the ball around for single, and eventually the Swans crossed the Heat with four wickets and 11 balls to spare. Sperling - who will step down to vicecaptain with the arrival on Englishman Luke Wells -told the News that their ability to maintain control came down to their mental side of the game. The new look Casey-South Melbourne - featuring four debutants - had an edge about them in Saturday’s comfortable Victorian Premier Cricket over Frankston Peninsula at Casey Fields. They resembled the 2016/17 version of themselves, a well-drilled side that has plenty of strings to their bow. It was a slow deck on a glorious day to start the season, and the Heat wasted little time in winning the toss and batting. Frankston openers Tom Ewing and Tom Wood started steadily and managed to squeeze out 40 runs in the opening 11 overs. One of the Swans’ other new recruits seamer Josh Dowling (2/43) - got the ball talking and forced Ewing into a false stroke, with keeper Devin Pollock moving brilliantly, low to his left, to take a ripping catch. Wood and Liam Tonkin (56) built a platform to launch a massive total from, and combined for 86 runs between them, but the Swans were well placed in the field and more importantly, bowled tight lengths and often cramped up the pair. Tonkin eventually gave his wicket up to Dowling, with skipper Lachie Sperling taking a catch to leave the visitors 2/126. Two stellar bits of glovework by Devin Pollock - resulting in the stumping of Chris Dew and Gordon Waterfall off Sperling saw the Swans take control, with the Swans suffocating the Heat and slowly bringing down the run rate. Sperling, in particular was outstanding, finishing with 2/33 off his 10 overs, and was hard to play with his varieties and field placements. Wood continued to build his innings but couldn’t find a partner that was going to stick around long enough, and despite some majestic strokes and creativity, the Heat struggled to tick over the scoreboard. Late spells by Lambden (3/36) - who bowled with venom and energy - and Maxwell (0/35) were particularly damaging, with the Heat unable to put the pair away. If the opening day of the Turf 1 season was any true indicator, it would be safe to say that Springvale South is looking even more formidable than first thought. While reigning premiers Mordialloc were without their superstars in Ian Daniel and Nuwan Kulasekera and had just one of their premiership bowling group available, the sheer dominance of the Bloods' batting group was evident from the outset. It wasn't the most ideal start with opener Liam Hamilton falling victim to new skipper Dylan Campbell (3/67), who enjoyed a strong opening spell. But aggressive opener Nathan King (61) was in no mood to simply see off the new ball, launching a tirade of sixes, and combined with Tim Ford (50), saw the home side quickly reach 1/90 as the lack of bowling depth for the Bloodhounds soon began a major problem. King's highly aggressive nature eventually brought about his wicket, but it was an innings breathtaking from the beginning, and a brief fight back from the visitors as expected saw them peg the score back to a respectable 3/125. That's until DDCA legend Steven Spojaric stepped up to the plate, combining brilliantly with returning all-rounder Jarrod Armitage to pile on 117 runs in good time, with Spoljaric carving 19 boundaries to the fence in a sensational performance. Arguably the greatest ever player in the competition's history, Spoljaric calmly passed yet another century, finishing on 107 before departing. Spoljaric's - a five time Wookey medallist shows no signs of slowing down at the ripe age of 41, and toyed with the Bloodhounds' fieldsman in a class display that has ominous signs of what he may achieve this year Armitage's classy 38 and skipper Craig Slocombe's entertaining 37 - that featured two sixes - saw the Bloods reach 7/313 in just 61 overs, before a declaration gave the home side just under 20 overs to play with. Brendan and Ryan Morris gave the Bloodhounds a fighting chance at stumps, helping the visitors reach 0/66 off 19 overs. Berwick, meanwhile, got going after a slowish start to reach 7/250 at Arch Brown Reserve against North Dandenong. The Bears didn't have it all their own way and at one point sat 5/106 with skipper and superstar Matt Chasemore back in the sheds after falling to spinner Akshay Ballal (1/86), before Nathan Pilon (58) and new recruit Brendan Rose (74 not out) helped steer the ship. The former Casey-South Melbourne club champion brought his good batting form from his last season of Premier Cricket to compile a classy half century, striking seven boundaries and also combining late with Jack Phillips (33) to reach a strong total. The Maroons withstood a heap of pressure to get to stumps unscathed, and will resume with all 10 wickets in hand after Syed Mehmood (6) and Austin Heldt (11) got the visitors to 0/17 at stumps. Overseas recruit Luke Davis, meanwhile, who last played for St Mary's in 2009/10, started his second stint with the Saints with a bang, carving 100 and helping his team post 7/283 against Buckley Ridges at Park Oval. REVIEW - ROUND 1 (DAY ONE)
Steven Spoljaric cuts the ball during his brilliant century for Springvale South on Satruday. 185946 Phillips tore the Rams to pieces in the final hour before stumps, taking 5/3 off seven overs to leave the visitors reeling at 5/20. Phillips produced an unplayable spell that has almost certainly got his side on the back seat for an opening round win. Cranbourne, meanwhile, will be looking to avoid outright after a disastrous opening day of the season against Dingley at Souter Oval. Another sublime bowling effort - this time by Dingoes spearhead Andrew Dalby (7/23) saw an almost unrecognisable Eagles side skittled for just 60 in just fewer than two hours. Dalby ensured the Eagles couldn't find any momentum with the bat whatsoever, taking five of the first seven scalps to leave Matt Blackman's side 7/30, and eventually 8/33 when Dalby got through the gate of Luke Dinger. They clawed their way to 60. A couple of early wickets saw the Dingoes fall to 2/21 and brighten the prospects of the Eagles who had started brightly with the new ball, before gun batsmen Matt Hague (30) and skipper Corey Booth (45) ensured they could comfortably surpass the Eagles' first innings total, eventually declaring at 7/103. The Eagles are 1/19 at stumps. In the other matches across the Turf 2 competition on Saturday, Parkmore Pirates are also heading towards a strong opening round win after a brilliant team display with the bat against Dandenong West at Greaves Reserve Batting first, the Pirates got off to a cracking start, compiling 64 for the first wicket, before new recruit Ammar Bajwa (78) and returning star Aditya Ganesh (69) punished the Westers, combining for 23 boundaries and three sixes to flatten the home side, before declaring at 8/309 and with 12 overs left to take some wickets. Despite an early wicket, the Westers fought hard, with skipper Matthew Collett (25) and Peter Atkinson (14) getting their side to 1/48. The match between St Brigid's/St Louis and Narre Warren at Bonbeach Oval was delayed until Saturday. In Turf 3, Wickets tumbled at Perc Allison Oval, but Beaconsfield remains in a strong position to get its season off on a bright note. The Tigers lost the toss and fielded against Parkfield.

The three late wickets for the Tigers had the home side in a spot of bother at 3/19, but Benbow (15) and Kevin Baldsing (14) managed to steady the ship and leave their side 3/48 at stumps, only 57 runs away from victory. Keysborough, meanwhile, posted a competitive 226 against Fountain Gate at Rowley Allan Reserve, Lynbrook carved up 5/290 against Silverton, while the match between Lyndale and Coomora was delayed until Saturday.

Cranbourne ladies shine Another game against a hot contender from last year's Premier League was no problem for the Cranbourne ladies bowls team, which claimed victory by nine shots against Doncaster. A home game with a number of spectators looking on initially had the home crowd in shock after Doncaster got off to a strong start. But the girls realised: "hey this is a tough competition and we need to lift our game". They did not disappoint, and by the lunch break they were within reach and after a little get together on the green they were reminded that Cranbourne had the momentum and with that all rinks fired up and got the job done. Skip Yvonne Van Der Wees and her crew of Sandra Mueller, Heather Witherden and Kath Dudink were simply outstanding - winning by 13 shots, which sealed victory for Cranbourne. Cranbourne ladies 59 (14 points) defeated Doncaster 50 (2 points) Other midweek bowls results this week were: Cranbourne 2 Div 2 Open 57 (2 points) was defeated by Keysborough 60. Cranbourne 3 Div 3 Open 38 (0 points) was defeated by Narre Warren 66. Cranbourne 4 Six-A-Side Open 55 (14 points) defeated Pakenham 25. Round 1 of Saturday Pennant started the week off with disappointing results for the top two Cranbourne sides, which went down by small margins. After a big build-up during the week, head selector Doug Boggie was not pleased with the result but was still very confident that the club would fight back quickly and get the season back on track. Side 1 Division 2 Playing at home, skip Barry 'The General' Thomas played very well with support from Vic Butera, Gavin Wright and the steady as always Peter Elgar - winning by six shots - while skip Ron 'Two Dogs' Lyfield just got home by a couple of shots
but they could not close the gap with the side going down in the end by eight shots. Cranbourne 70 (4 points) lost to Mulgrave CC 78 (14 points). Side 2 Division 3 It was much the same story at Keysborough, despite a great effort by skip Sue Hudson and her team of Frank Male, Lynne Wood and Roger Roscoe getting up by six shots but unfortunately that was not enough to save the day with the side going down by just five shots. Cranbourne 77 (4 points) lost to Keysborough 82 (14 points). Side 3 Division 5 At last some good news for the club with a fantastic victory for the next two sides. Skip Ron Shields and his crew of Bob Scott, Barry Graham and club legend Ray Boskell won by 17 shots, which was all that was needed to defeat Edithvale in the end by 17 shots. Cranbourne 84 (16 points) defeated Edithvale 67 (2 points). Side 4 Division 7 The big winners of the day were skip Frank Coulter and his crew of Brian Turton, Paul Males and John Forsyth. They took the prize of the day with an outstanding performance of 25 shots up. The overall winning margin was 38 shots with full points, which was quite amazing considering that one of the Cranbourne players had to retire from the game ill, leaving one rink with two bowls not played each end for half the game. Impressively, they still managed to win on that rink. Cranbourne 100 (18 points) defeated Dandenong Club 62 (0 points). Side 5 - Six-a-Side Side 5 suffered a seven-shot loss after a hard tussle all day with some great bowls played, particularly by skip John Gardner and his crew of Feeley and Williams winning by 11 shots. Cranbourne 29 (2 points) lost to Churchill 36 (12 points).

An impressive turnaround in form Narre Warren's midweek bowlers turned their results around with Division 2 and Division 3 both winning. At the Dandenong Club, Division 2 had a close eight-shot win. Alan Mark, Iain Stevenson, Rod Lane and Jim Millar had 18 shots on the card before their opponents scored, on their way to a 29-10 victory. Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Peter Hayden and Brent Hone followed suit with 11 on the card and won 2113. Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Phil Howard and Wilma Stevenson could not buy a shot and went down 9-28. Narre Warren (1) 14-59 defeated Dandenong Club (1) 2-51. At Fountain Gate, the Division 3 team had a comfortable 28-shot win over Cranbourne. Stan Bulmer, Pauline Kempf, Joe McGuire and Judy Naughton won 25-10 and Pam Uren, Enid Gibb, Ernesto Vergara and Peter Groom won 23-13, while Janice Moran, Rose Rasmussen, Keith Mark and Geoff Miller had a close game, but still won 18-15. Narre Warren (2) 16-66 defeated Cranbourne (3) 0-38. Last week's winning team, Division 6A (sixa-side) suffered a loss against Hampton Park. Nancy Pugh, Helen McCarthy and Graham Peterson again won, 24-14, but Diane Peterson, Jeanette Cox and Brian Fraser went down 8-32. Narre Warren (3) 2-32 lost to Hampton Park (2) 12-46. Saturday Pennant resumed on the weekend. Narre Warren has four teams listed. The result was two wins and two losses. Division 3 played at Fountain Gate and had an all-rink win over Pakenham. John Wright, Tracey Storm, Brent Hone and Zak Storm was the strongest, winning 29-18, while Eric Sydenham, Zade Bulmer, Erik Luyters and Wilma Stevenson won 25-15. In close games, Reg Young, Joe Selfridge, Rod Land and Cam Lee won by one shot, 2019, as did Iain Stevenson, Peter Lister, Percy Herath and Jim Millar (also 20-19) Narre Warren (1) 18-94 defeated Pakenham (3) 0-71. Great weather for Berwick The new season of Saturday Pennant got off to a great start last Saturday with some long awaited-sunshine and great conditions for some good bowling. Berwick Bowling Club has entered nine sides in the VRBA Pennant season and five sides in the Tuesday midweek season, involving some 144 bowlers on Saturday and an additional 60 bowlers midweek - ranking Berwick one of the largest metro clubs. Last Saturday resulted in a great start to the season for Berwick with six of its sides managing to bring home a win on the day, with its ninth side having a bye in the first round. There were some particularly competitive close matches played with, Berwick's number 2 side only going down by four shots on the day and its sixth side winning in a close battle to come out on top by just two shots. On the other side of the ledger, the midweek sides found the competition a good deal stronger on the day however the season has a long way to go and their confidence will build.
