Fascinating Parliamentary insight Many members of the Probus Club of Wantirna Heights recently enjoyed an excellent visit to Parliament House in Melbourne.

They were met by Heidi Victoria, Bayswater MP and Shadow Minister for Arts and Culture, Tourism and Major Events and Consumer Affairs.

They also met Bruce Atkinson MP,

President of the Legislative Council.

The visit started with a delicious morning tea of savouries and sweet treats plus tea and coffee.

The tour included the Parliamentary Library and Upper and Lower House chambers. The tour guide had also worked at Buckingham Palace and the UK Parliament in a similar role and was

understandably knowledgeable about protocol and political matters generally.

Parliament House is a magnificent building. Its ornate architecture shows the wealth that was available at the time of construction due to the Gold Rush taxes.

Erection began in December 1855 on the two chambers, one for the Victorian Legislative Assembly and a smaller

Legislative Council.

In November 1856 the first session of the Victorian Government in the new chambers was opened to great acclaim.

This fascinating and extremely informative tour finished at noon.

The day Ali changed a life PROBUS clubs have acknowledged that stimulating youth programs are far more effective than harsher law and order in bringing about a safer community outcome, community activist Les Twentyman said in an address to the Probus Club of Mernda.

His presentation includes a picture of a young African boy dressed in a tuxedo meeting boxing legend Mohammad Ali in 1998, which he said illustrated that point.

Les takes up the story...

"A local school approached me in 1998 about a refuge student who had seen both

mum and dad beheaded when escaping the war with his siblings and was getting into plenty of trouble both in and out of school.

So I took him on over a period of months, with not much improvement.

Then I got a call from Jeanie Pratt to say Mohammad Ali was coming to Melbourne for the 1998 Grand Final and that Mohammad wanted to meet troubled youths or kids in boxing clubs.

"I told the boy if he 'pulled his socks up' I would take him and brother, also getting into trouble, to meet the great man. At first he thought I was joking but then took up

the task of behaving.

"On the morning of the grand final I picked up six kids from our refuge in Sunshine and then the two brothers, who came out dressed in tuxedos. They told me the African community came together to buy the suits because of the status of Mohammad Ali to their community.

"Last year the 'boy' now 29 came up to me to say he is now a father of a nine-yearold boy and tells him when I’m in the media that I’m the man that changed his life for the better.

But no, it wasn't me - it was the great man."

Dates for Your Diary DELEGATES MEETINGS The last Delegate’s Meeting for this year is on Monday 26 November at 10am, followed by the AGM. The first Delegate’s Meeting for 2019 will be on Monday 25 February at 10am.

Both meetings will be held at the Mulgrave Country Club, corner of Wellington and Jells Roads, Wheelers Hill.

Former PAV president Jim Frew My name is Jim Frew and I served as president of the Probus Association from 2011 to 2013. I was also the creator of the PAV website and its administrator for some seven years.

I am very concerned at what appears to be a serious waning of interest in the Probus Association of Victoria, which for many years provided a quarterly forum for its member clubs at which club delegates could discuss all manner of issues relating to the running of a successful Probus club.

In my day as president, many challenging issues were raised, and were sometimes vigorously discussed, and there was much sharing of information about running a successful club.

These meetings were often attended by an average of 150 delegates and I have known up to some 200 delegates attending some meetings.

I have just attended the recent August meeting of club delegates and was astonished to see fewer than 100 delegates in attendance.

two interesting speakers, there was barely 15 minutes available for the customary discussion forum that was an important feature of meetings in past years.

I also noticed the absence of ‘Younger Probian Oldies’, who will likely be the ones running successful clubs.

An injection of enthusiasm from the next PAV committee due to assume office this November is urgently needed. Otherwise, PAV will fade away and become a memory of great days in the past.

I have recently heard of clubs withdrawing from PAV membership because they feel it no longer has value.

Finally, I feel that recent meeting venues are catering largely for Probus Clubs in eastern suburbs, so can I suggest that a more accessible meeting venue close to or in - the city is essential.

PAV is not catering for newer Probus Clubs in the growing west and north of Melbourne, and its meeting venues should be close to train and/or bus public transport.

Many senior citizens would be better avoiding car travel on very busy city highways and roads where they can be potential hazards both to themselves and others.

The AGM is nearly upon us and fortunately we have a new president in the wings prepared to take over from me.

However it is also the opportunity for more of you to become involved in the committee where we plan the events that you may take part in.

As this is the last Probian for 2018, I take the opportunity to wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year period. My love and best wishes to you all.

Castle’s fascinating past VENTURA Bus lines took 34 Berwick Central Combined Probus Club members to Overnewton Castle in Keilor.

They were received by the guides as if they were family and made to feel most welcome and given tea or coffee on arrival.

The original building was conceived by William Taylor, who named it after his birth town in Scotland. Building commenced in 1849 and he added the west wing to the present shape 10 years later.

The years have been kind to Overnewton Castle and it remains much as it was originally built but is now hidden away among the old elms and oak trees that were planted so long ago.

The building has seen many changed in life-style, gone are the days of horse and carriage, gas lights and servants, but the renovations have preserved the old world grace and charm along with the grandeur and atmosphere of the age.

William lived here until his death in 1901, when one his sons took over the estate.

He sold it to the Carr family who converted it into a wedding reception venue with an added dining room. It was in the hands of a Hotel group for a short time before the present tenants bought it in 1975.

It’s interesting to note that the suburbs of Taylors Lakes and Taylors Hill and named after the Taylor family.

Our members loved this outing partly because they were given access to all 36 rooms with none roped off. We all agreed that this venue is definitely a hidden treasure. We would recommend it to all Probus Groups.

A Kodak moment on the Mundi Mundi Plain.

Outback adventure for Monash TWELVE members of the Combined Probus Club of Monash and eight extras boarded the “Highland Explorer” driven by the inimitable Chris Grafen to start a Broken Hill Outback Adventure, including a trip along Silo Art Trail of north western Victoria.

We saw the painted silos at Rupanyup, Sheep Hills, Brim and Roseberry before arriving at our motel in Hopetoun. These were described and pictured on page three of the August-September Probian so further details will not be repeated here.

We saw our fifth silo at Patchewollock, enjoyed morning tea in the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, saw “Big Lizzie” in Red Cliffs, toured and lunched in Mildura.

In Wentworth we visited the Old Wentworth Gaol and Pioneer World Museum, Charles Sturt’s marked tree, the confluence of the Darling and Murray rivers and the Perry Sand Dunes before continuing our journey to Broken Hill, where we visited the Miners Memorial and

associated lookout. Visibility was poor due to strong winds and loads of dust.

Our local guide took us on a comprehensive Broken Hill city sights tour, including Jo Keenan’s Lookout, the site of the Turkish Assault, the original BHP offices, the Browne Shaft and other sights of historical significance.

We headed to Silverton, the location of a number of outback movies, where we picnic lunched behind the old Municipal Chambers building and had free time to investigate the “must sees” of this virtual ghost town and have a beer at the famous Silverton Hotel.

We then headed west to the Mundi Mundi Lookout to see the vast Mundi Mundi plain heading west into South Australia.

On the way back to Broken Hill we spent time at the “Living Desert Sculpture Symposium” where we viewed the sculptures and took in the panoramic views in all directions. Late afternoon we

visited the Jack Absalom gallery and were fortunate to meet Jack who showed us his magnificent collection of carved emu eggs.

The next morning we visited the School of the Air and enjoyed two kindergarten classes and “met” the children involved - what a big difference modern communications have made.

We then went looked at the various displays at the Silver City Mint and Art Centre and of course the famous 360 degrees panorama - “Big Picture”, a 100 metre diorama of the very much wider area geographical features in this outback area of Australia.

We had free time for lunch in Broken Hill and then visited The Royal Flying Doctor Service base where we saw a video and many displays of the activities of the RFDS. From there we visited Bell’s Milk Bar to enjoy revisiting the “fifties” with displays, jukebox, milk shakes, ice creams and sundaes.

We headed east to the Menindee Lakes,

enjoying morning tea at the site of Burke and Wills “base camp” and then saw hundreds of birds in this magnificent lake and river system on our cruise in the “River Lady”.

A picnic lunch in Menindee was followed by a scenic drive along the Darling River in the Kinchega National Park.

We had a long drive towards the Mungo National Park and saw first-hand how dry this part of the country currently is.

Near the “Walls of China” in the late 1960s partial skeletons of ancient humans and other evidence of human activity, including fire places and foot prints, were found and these turned out to be around 40,000 years old. From the “Red Top” lookout we had spectacular views over this ancient landscape.

Our group enjoyed not only a great commentary from Chris, but also the benefits of the research that he has put into making our experience a memorable one.

A wonderful winter break IN early August, 25 Probians from Waverley Gardens Combined, Syndal Ladies and East Bentleigh Clubs enjoyed six days in the Yamba and Clarence Valley area of New South Wales away from the cold, bleak Melbourne winter.

Based at the beautiful Angourie Rainforest Resort near Yamba each day brought opportunities to travel around the area taking in some of the more unusual sights and experiences.

Places visited included Ross McLeod’s Bell collection at Lawrence - an amazing collection of over 1300 bells of all shapes, sizes and uses including an old Melbourne tram bell, and two rooms devoted to rural Australian memorabilia.

The Aranyani Bison Farm, a unique farming venture featuring American bison, was another highlight. The owners presented a very informative talk about the bison - their history, abilities and their use.

Time was allowed to feed the bison and visit the small museum before enjoying an excellent lunch featuring bison meat (very lean) Hamburgers.

At Lanbruk Collectables and Olive Farm the group saw an incredible collection of materials ranging from a restored 1928 Chev truck, household items, children’s toys, furniture, signs and other paraphernalia.

During lunch David, the owner, detailed his organic approach to farming and then the group was entertained by a local bush poet who had all in fits of laughter with the rendition of his poems.

Schaeffer House in Grafton, beautifully furnished with period furniture and

relaxing lunch cruise on the Clarence River allowed all to relax and enjoy one another’s company.

Favoured with fine, mild weather, excellent accommodation, great food and the opportunity to see and experience an

with several magnificent collections of Wedgwood and fine china, certainly brought back many memories.

Visits to the Yamba Museum with a typical CWA style morning tea, and a very

Rye’s Tuscan delight RYE Ladies Probus enjoying their trip to Tuscany earlier this year.

During June and July this year two groups from Rye Ladies Probus journeyed to Tuscany.

The principal town in the region is the ancient city of Florence.

Renowned for its architecture, the ladies also made the most of the shopping potential on offer in its many and varied markets.

But Tuscany is more than just Florence and architecture. It is an area of outstanding beauty, with its rolling hillsides covered in vineyards.

Yes the girls partook in a couple of glasses of delightful Italian wine accompanied by such delicacies of Spinach and Ricotta Gnocchi, generally agreed to be the favourite.

Terrific tour of the Sapphire IN mid-September 2018, in magnificent spring weather, 44 happy members and guests from the Gladstone Park Combined Probus Group enjoyed a five-day bus trip to Eden in New South Wales.

The bus travelled as far north as Central Tilba and

travelled 2000-plus kilometres over the five days, stopping for morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea every day along the way.

Coast in springtime After lunch the bus travelled through Lakes Entrance, Orbost, Cann River, Genoa and on to Eden, arriving at 5.30 pm.

Everyone settled into their rooms at the Halfway Motel and freshened up for a 7pm dinner and everyone was very relaxed and eager to discuss the day’s travel and ready to dine on a two-course meal.

On the second day, after a hearty breakfast, the group travelled to Bega to visit the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre, where they were able to taste and buy the local cheeses and visit the Bega Museum.

After morning tea in the garden the bus travelled further along to Central Tilba, turning off the Princess Highway 20 kilometres south of Narooma onto Corkhill Road for the Bellbird Scenic Drive, and the group took a stroll through the Tilba village with its quaint shops with interesting wares.

The bus then headed for Bermagui for a lunch stop, where the group enjoyed ‘fish’n chips on the wharf with the seagulls’.

After lunch the bus took the group for a little sight-seeing along the coast road at Bermagui Harbour, a destination that borders on perfection. Bermagui hugs the edges of a spectacular harbour and nestles under the shadow of Dromedary Mountain (Gulaga).

Then onwards with some more spectacular sight-seeing along the coast road through the towns of Murrah, Tanja, Mogareeka and Tathra, where the bus stopped to take in the magnificent views at Chamberlain Lookout.

Here some of the group spotted a whale in the ocean.

Then it was back to the motel for a rest and a freshen-up before dinner at 6.30 pm.

On the third day, after yet another cooked breakfast, the bus took the group to the Killer Whale Museum in Eden, a very interesting place, and were told about Old Tom, a name given to an orca by the whalers in the Port of Eden.

Then it was off to the Mary Mackillop Hall, which had been beautifully restored by the local people.

The bus then took the group to the wharf in Eden where they boarded the boat for a cruise of Twofold Bay, with the hope of seeing some passing whales but alas, the sea was a bit turbulent and no whales were seen so the boat turned back and continued on with its cruise around the bay.

Afternoon tea was enjoyed on the boat in calm waters just opposite the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn at Boydtown. Back at the wharf, the group boarded the bus for a trip to Boydtown where some of the group explored the beach and some enjoyed a drink in the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. After a full day of sightseeing, the group was again happy to return to their motel rooms for a rest and freshen-up for a 6.30 dinner.

On the fourth day, and yes, after another cooked breakfast, the bus took the group to Wheeler’s Oyster Farm in Pambula where they learnt how oysters were farmed and harvested - a very interesting process. The group were given a taste of an oyster and some bought oysters for their lunch and thoroughly enjoyed them.

Then it was back on the bus for the

much-awaited visit to Merimbula.

After a tour of a new housing area in Merimbula, the bus headed for the Merimbula Wharf Area (Aquarium) for a look at the magnificent seascape and Merimbula Lake from the wharf.

Then the bus took the group to Middle Beach for afternoon tea and a photo opportunity of the breathtaking scenery.

The bus then returned to the Merimbula shopping area to let the group wander through the shops, take some more photos and drink in the last day of their wonderful five-day trip to the Sapphire Coast.

Then it was back to the motel in Eden to get ready for the last dinner. Another evening of eating, drinking, laughing and non-stop talking.

Then it was time to pack suitcases and get to bed early for an early start on day five.

Up early to put the suitcases out before 6am and be in the restaurant at 6.30 am for breakfast.

After saying goodbye to their host and the staff at the motel, the bus departed the motel on time at 7am and headed for home with a pleasant stop at Lakes Entrance for morning tea, a wander through the town and wharf area and another opportunity to take some photos. After a short stop at Yarragon the bus headed back to Melbourne and arrived on time in Gladstone Park at 5.30 pm.

During the five days of travel and sightseeing, the weather was magnificent and everyone had a wonderful time - all in all, a fantastic trip to the Sapphire Coast.

The club members on tour.

Magical tour of the Murray NORTH Balwyn Heights Probus Club members enjoyed a week away in August at Barham Victoria for the Murray Magic Tour.

The group spent the week at the Riverside Motel and hosts Kristy-Lee and Clint arranged a tour each day.

How relaxing and enjoyable to have breakfast, then board the coach to be taken to a new location and a new experience each day, complete with an entertaining and informative commentary

by the coach driver Clint.

Home late in afternoon ready for dinner, members enjoyed the luxury of no meal preparation, no cooking and no problems of navigation, which we all experience from me to time.

The bus tours offered a full and interesting wide range of tourist attractions including the Spanner Man, a cruise on a paddle steamer and a visit to the Swan Hill Historical Village plus more.

Members learned something new each

day. It was lots of fun and there were interesting things to see and do.

The club is very active and engages in a number of tours and day trip activities plus a wide range of special interest groups.

It is keen to have people come and see what they do as a club guest.

Taste of Italy in King Valley ON a sunny, crisp winter’s morning, some 40 members of the Rose City Probus Club of Benalla enjoyed a bus trip to Chrismont Winery in the King Valley, North East Victoria.

On arrival, the members participated in a tasting of the wide variety of wines on offer at Chrismont Winery, appreciating not only the range but the excellent quality of the wines.

A diverse collection of Italian and classic European varietal wines across the Chrismont, La Zona and Riserva collections is offered.

Landmark civic building Pakenham East Probus members visited the City of Box Hill on Monday 27 August for a tour through its impressive town hall.

The landmark civic building was built between 1934 and 1935 and designed in the neo-grec style.

It was the administrative and community headquarters prior to the forming of the new City of Whitehorse in 1994. It remains

as a place of historic social importance and is constantly in use by the wider community.

Prior to the tour, members were treated to a â&#x20AC;&#x153;highâ&#x20AC;? morning tea.

Showing their true colours THE members of the Blackburn South Ladies Probus Club showed their true colours as they celebrated the club’s 29th birthday at the August meeting.

It was a chilly six degrees morning, so members were only too happy to dress in supporter colours, wearing scarves and beanies and even bringing along flags and rugs.

The room was decorated with balloons in the club colours and posters of favourite players.

Decked in their football finery, members enjoyed a footy style morning tea of

party pies, sausage rolls, quiches and sandwiches.

This was followed by the birthday cake which was cut by President Pat, now known as Saint Pat as there was no doubting her team allegiance!

In the background pianist Barbara played the team songs while members focussed on completing the quiz which was designed to test their knowledge of the game.

To add to the celebrations, another member was inducted into the club. It was certainly the day to see the Probus motto of Fun, Friendship and Fellowship in action!

Saint Pat, the president, is joined by Margaret to cut the birthday cake.

Wonthaggi’s annual visit to the Prom

Stepping out in Darebin INTREPID members of Maling Probus Club’s Walking Group enjoyed a bracing walk in Darebin Parklands amongst the golden wattle and spectacular rock formations beside the Darebin Creek.

Members also enjoyed sightings of many rainbow lorikeets and ducks on the ponds.

A home away from home HAWDON Street, Barmera - in South Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s â&#x20AC;&#x2122;must seeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Riverland region has much to live up to.

After all, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s named after Joseph Hawdon, who 180 years ago discovered the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s best known feature - a freshwater lake.

On March 12, 1938, Hawdon named the sprawling waterway Lake Bonney - after his friend Charles Bonney (they were the first to drive livestock from New South Wales to Adelaide).

It was up to other people to recognise and remember Hawdon, and he had a main street near the lake named after him.

Nearly two centuries later, the lake, and Hawdon Street, are still attracting large numbers. All who see Lake Bonney know how picturesque it is. The visitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s book at the Barmera Country Club vouches for how tourists are finding it a â&#x20AC;&#x153;home away from homeâ&#x20AC;&#x153;. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Thanks for the care and attention you gave us while staying at the Barmera Country Club,â&#x20AC;&#x153; was the opening comment from Edith Whyatt, the tour and activities officer with the Combined Probus Club of Horsham.

In May, Edith organised a party of 30plus folks from her home town to base themselves at Barmera, on a five-day, fournight tour of the Riverland. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our members had nothing but positive comments. It was ideal accommodation for the over 60s. The spacious rooms with views over the fairways (the Barmera Country Club sits on the local golf course) were well equipped and extremely comfortable. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The meals were very tasty and well presented.â&#x20AC;?

When recently asked what was to see in Barmera, and the Riverland, a tourist information officer replied to the inquirer: â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is there not to see?â&#x20AC;&#x153; â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got everything here. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s full of horticulture and viticulture, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a steam museum, South Australian Country Music Festival and Awards, Easter twilight markets, an open air cinema and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re midway between Adelaide and Mildura. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And did I tell you last year we were the Australian Tidy Towns Overall Winner for Keep Australia Beautiful.â&#x20AC;&#x153; Then thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lake Bonney and the Barmera Country Club.

The former is home to much sailing,

fishing, boating, wakeboarding and skiing - and is best known as the strip of water where the legendary Sir Donald Campbell put his racing machine â&#x20AC;&#x2122;Bluebirdâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; over.

In 1964, he became the only person to hold both the land and water speed record.

Well over half a century later, tourists are still coming to see Lake Bonney.

The smart ones are staying for days and taking in much more - while based at the Barmera Country Club.

A fascinating insight ON Tuesday 11 September 2018, members of the Probus Club of Donvale Hill visited the Telstra Telecommunications Museum in Burwood Road, Hawthorn, to see a wonderful display of telecommunication equipment including early to modern public and mobile telephones, switchboards, interactive working electro-mechanical and digital switching equipment, and even the original working Speaking Clocks.

The group was fortunate to have three extremely knowledgeable volunteers explain all about the equipment and in many instances demonstrate how the equipment actually worked.

One of these volunteers was an ex-postal clerk. He amused the group by telling many stories about delivering telegrams and life in the PMG during his younger years.

He even showed how telegrams were processed from beginning to end via the Morse code equipment. This was amazing.

AT the August meeting of Waverley Gardens Combined Probus Club, Pam Martin was presented with Life Membership.

Joining the club in 2003, Pam has served tirelessly on the management committee for the past 13 years - 11 as trips/outings convener and two as treasurer, carrying out these duties with dedication, enthusiasm and professionalism.

She has also played an important role in organising and assisting with trips and outings at a regional level.

Visits such as this reinforce just how much the world has changed in our lifetime and how quickly technology moves on.

It also had everyone admiring the skills and talents of engineers and trained staff in designing, building and maintaining the massive communication network.

This is a hidden gem just over the road from the beautiful Hawthorn Town Hall.

Wal flying high at 90 BERWICK Central Combined Probus club now has two members who have celebrated their 90th year.

Wal Schuback now joins John Oliver in that select group.

Wal was delighted to cut the cake that had been prepared at the club’s August meeting.

He is very active and still builds and flies radio controlled model aeroplanes as he has done for many years.

A Probus outing last year was to view the many planes in his collection. He has represented Australia in international competition in Europe at several events and is justly very proud of his showing there.

Wal continues his long association with the aero modellers club as well as his Probus links and loves to get involved.

Syndal celebration IN July, the Syndal Combined Club celebrated 16 years with a special morning tea and entertainment provided by “Chordite”, a men’s barbershop group of 10 men singing in four part harmony.

The singing was interspersed with some light-hearted humour.

The club has flourished since its inauguration in 2002, with a large number of activities enjoyed by 150 members.

A pictured was taken of past presidents, with the only absence being Max Lehey, who passed away recently after a relatively short battle with ill health. He is sadly missed by all.

Great week in the Outback IN early August, a group of 25 from Syndal Combined Probus flew from Melbourne to Brisbane, transferred to the overnight train - ‘Spirit of the Outback’ - and arrived in Longreach 26 hours later.

Although sleep was scarce in our first class sleeper cabins, everyone enjoyed the experience. Meals on board were excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful.

In Longreach, hosts for the week, Kinnon and Co, have a great story to tell of their diversification from sheep and cattle farming into tourism. This move was necessary to provide an alternative source of income and combat the ravages of drought in 2006. The current drought conditions commenced seven years ago.

The Kinnon’s tourism innovations since 2002 have provided a popular stopover place for campers and other tourists, won many awards, and greatly assisted in keeping the town functioning.

Our program, organised by Trade Travel, commenced the evening we arrived, with a country style dinner while watching the Outback Stockman’s show in the grounds adjacent to the Stockman’s Hall of Fame.

The following day comprised of a day trip to Winton and included visits to the Australian Age of Dinosaurs Museum, the newly created Dinosaur Canyon and the Collection Room.

This was followed by a visit to an Opal retail outlet which included a talk and film on Opal Mining. Lunch was at the historic

North Gregory Hotel, where “Waltzing Matilda” was performed for the first time in 1895. Behind the hotel is Arno’s wall - a work of art containing every household item imaginable. A visit to the Waltzing Matilda Centre, recently rebuilt after a fire in 2015, was visited before returning to Longreach, 180km south of Winton.

The next three days included visits to Nogo Station, a working sheep and cattle station owned by the Kinnon family, and hosted by their daughter Abigail, resplendent in period costume. We heard ‘Stories of the Past’ from Scotty, a local identity, visited the Stockman’s Hall of Fame, the Qantas Founders Outback Museum, Camden Park Station with cattle yards, shearing shed and a large solar panel installation in one of their fields. The two Kinnon sons, Jeremy and Lane, entertained with a Cobb and Co Stagecoach Ride, an Old Time Movie, and their own, hilarious, Old Time Tent Show.

A visit to the Longreach School of Distance Education, Sunset Cruise on the Thomson River, Stockman’s Dinner and a Stockman’s Spectacular Sound and Light Show under the stars concluded the week’s activities.

Overall, it was an action-packed, funfilled and memorable experience that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Life in Longreach and the Australian Outback is certainly a great contrast to life in the big city!

Five days around Bright PROBIANS from Eaglehawk, White Hills, Kangaroo Flat and Golden Square shared a wonderful five days at Bright and surrounding districts.

The trip included Mt Hotham, where there was still plenty of snow, and a most interesting visit to Bonegilla.

A call in to the Garden Centre at Albury saw Probians happily loading plants into the bus before adjourning to the Commercial Club for lunch.

They stayed at the Bright Chalet where convivial conversation took place during happy hour and over dinner.

The trip home included a visit to some painted silos which were much admired.

Walking in the rain WE have a good time on our walking days, We set a conservative pace.

We may need to stop for a minute or two, While somebody ties a shoelace.

We talk as we walk, â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;bout a number of things.

We may stop when we come to a corner And discuss which direction is best.

And if we should come to a bench or a seat, We may have a well deserved rest.

When weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve walked a respectable distance,

We share all our stories and news.

We have nourished our mind and our soul.

And lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s little problems seem lighter

The yearning for physical nourishment

When youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re out in your walking shoes,

Leads us to our ultimate goal.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve had some fresh air and weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve exercised, Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for the mandatory stop.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll all have a coffee and maybe a cake.

We are bound for the coffee shop.

We all feel good as we head to the cars, Though there maybe an ache or a pain.

But each of us knows that in two weeks time Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be there to do it again.

Designing, building and delivering thousands of specialised hand-crafted aids at no cost to families in need. The news of their enormous contribution and achievements is being embraced by the broader community.

The award-winning Balmoral Men’s Shed volunteers.

In 2017, the Balmoral Men’s Shed volunteers were interviewed by Jo Hall from Channel 9 News.

Under the leadership of Bruce Pennicott, who has lived in the village for over 30 years, the story showcased their great volunteer work for children and families impacted by cerebral palsy and the difference their hand-made equipment made in day-to-day life. The report sparked a real interest and donations of materials and supplies came in from far and wide!

Soon after, Carol Carew wrote a lovely piece for the Studfield Wantirna

newspaper. She noted cheekily: “The Balmoral Village Men’s Shed membership fees are a good cup of tea or coffee with the added extra that, if it is your birthday, you supply the cake!”

The interest continued. Bruce was invited to attend Government House for an awards ceremony celebrating Victorian volunteers who have given outstanding service and selfless contribution to health, happiness, and resilience within Victorian communities.

At 94 years young, Bruce’s accepted an award for his years of goodhearted and generous dedication to CPAC and their

families. It was a fitting tribute to a man (and a team of residents) who over 15 years has made a huge difference to the lives of children with severe cerebral palsy.

And this year, the Balmoral Men’s Shed group were again recognised. This time, a High Commendation in the category of “Outstanding Advocate of People with Disabilities” at the Sir John Monash Awards.

These awards celebrate ‘amazing volunteers who give their time to achieve remarkable things’.

Despite all the accolades, it is business as usual for these outstanding Balmoral residents. They remain as focused as ever in continuing the great work for CPAC. They love their fully-equipped woodwork studio at the village and are always welcoming new resident members. And Balmoral is pleased to provide its residents with the benefits of such a facility and is extremely proud of everything they have achieved.

The kindness, generosity and selflessness of the Balmoral woodwork team is just one example of community spirit at the village. There are many, many more. Freemasons back seniors Royal Freemasons has been announced as the Premier Partner with the Victorian Government in the 36th annual Victorian Seniors Festival in October.

modern, such as “up to the minute”. I have also seen it used as a moment in time -“the minute he walks through that door…”

The town in which I live has signs on some posts, saying “three minutes to such and such”.

Dictionaries might say a unit of something small, such as a coin of trifling value.

They might also say an agreement of something or an understanding.

The Macquarie Dictionary says the word, in plural, records the proceedings of a meeting.

The word represents only the outline of the meeting, so the secretary, or the minute taker, records only the decisions taken and the other materials according to the direction of the organisation. Who spoke and what they said are almost never recorded.

Stephen Murray-Smith said minutia was often found in the plural and meant very small or trifling details Eliezer Edwards in his 1901 dictionary said minutes of a meeting were so called because they were formally taken down in minute characters preparatory to being engrossed, that is written in large

characters for preservation or record.

Okay, that would have been worded differently today, but that was more than 100 years ago and our language is changing all the time.

The first English dictionary, prepared in 1604, said of minutely “smally”. You can’t get much smaller than that.

Wilfred Funk said minute meant small, “which gives us our minute, or 1440th part of a day”.

John Ayto agreed but added that the minutes generally were a rough draft in small writing. He added that minute was a small unit of time, which English acquired from old French.

Nigel Rees said the minutes were taken down in small writing “so they could be engrossed or put into larger writing later".

I couldn’t understand that. Why would you put minutes in small writing so you could put them in larger writing later?

I know that in my secretarial days I would write the minutes in longhand, then tear out the page and paste the page in the appropriate place later. It saved a lot of work and nobody ever complained.

MOST organisations (dare I say all?) have secretaries.

Those secretaries keep minutes of meetings, and probably many of them have no idea why minutes have their name.

Clocks have minutes, and hours, and sometimes - often in motels - the alarm goes off just when you don’t want it to, usually about 2am. Check the clocks before you go to bed.

Anyway, this column isn’t about minutes of clocks. This column is about minutes of meetings.

The word minute represents something in miniature. The idea is that the secretary takes down often the names of people there and the important decisions, subject to the organisation’s policies.

The action of taking the minutes has been referred to as minutation, but you won’t see that word in many dictionaries.

Minuteness is the quality of being extremely small.

Some associated words are minuteless (not to be measured by minutes), minuted (recorded in a minute or note), minutely (every minute), minuter (one who writes minutes), minutie (a trifling detail), minutial (pertaining to details), minutious (dealing with minutes) and minutulous (very small).

A minute is the 60th part of a unit. I have seen it used in reference to the word

Bequests offer peace of mind Vets&Pets Lort Smith CEO Fiona Webster ONE of the sad trends animal shelters face across the country is the increase in well-loved pets suddenly finding themselves homeless because their human companion has passed away or become incapable of caring for them.

Pet owner, Murray Piper, made a provision for his companions before passing away earlier this year. This ensured he had peace of mind for their future.

Mr Piper had two dependent dogs and worried about what would happen to them after he passed.

“I did my research and came to the conclusion that Lort Smith offered and provided the best service because they would not only make sure the dogs went to a loving home but also keep an eye on their everyday health and wellbeing,” said Mr Piper at the time of making his initial enquiry.

Under the Pet Legacy program, Lort Smith will assume full responsibility for the pet, providing a thorough vet check before beginning the search for the most appropriate new carer to look after them for the rest of their days. The Pet Legacy program encourages bequestors to provide details of the pet’s lifestyle so they can be rehomed accordingly and that there is an understanding of their unique personality and special traits.

Mr Piper left a bequest to Lort Smith to make sure this work could be carried out when the time arose, and dogs Baxter and Bentley were registered in the Pet Legacy program.

Despite what many may think, you do not have to be wealthy and famous to leave a bequest. In fact, most bequests are made by ordinary people, who want to make a difference in their community even after they’re gone. Even small amounts can add up to make a lasting impact.

AS the years pass, many people find that the load they can carry on one or both shoulders is much less than before. Every week I see at least one patient with either a new shoulder problem or the legacy of an old injury.

The shoulder joint is a complex joint which must not only be able to carry a load but also be flexible in order to deliver complete function.

A healthy shoulder joint rotates in different directions with the actions of different muscles - sometimes referred to as the rotator cuff.

The different bones are held in place by strong but flexible ligaments and there are also bursae - the medical term for the “cushions” between different structures.

Any one or many of these components can be injured or become inflamed, but most common is a full or partial tear of part of the rotator cuff.

Some shoulder injuries occur with trauma, for example, dislocation of a football player’s shoulder with a heavy bump. Assessment and treatment of these sudden traumatic injuries is not the subject here.

In general practice more often a patient will attend with the shoulder pain that arises over time. A classic story is one about the action of reaching behind to pick up a heavy object like a book or bag on the back seat of a car. A few repetitions of this action and the shoulder may be strained with progressive minor tears in a ligament.

Pain and stiffness may follow.

If you develop shoulder pain see your GP early. A full examination of range of shoulder movement and the positions where pain is felt (sometimes referred to as the painful arc) can give excellent clues as to which structures could be affected and determines tests and treatment that will be recommended. If the examination doesn’t “add up” to a shoulder injury particularly if there are other painful areas in the body - your doctor may look for signs of inflammatory arthritis or other background illness.

One cause of shoulder pain which can arise either secondary to or separate from any known injury is the frustrating condition which we call “frozen shoulder”.

This painful restrictive condition is due to a tightening of the capsule of the joint.

The capsule is the connective tissue which encloses all the functioning structures of the joint and contains the fluid that lubricates the joint. If it stiffens then the pressure within the joint increases and movement becomes tight and painful.

I use the word “frustrating” advisedly as progress frustrates both patient and doctor!

Although some available treatments assist greatly with relieving pain and returning limited mobility, none is a quick fix for return to full function and the outcome can be unpredictable for individual patients. In my years of experience, it is this condition that really gives the meaning to the term “patient”. Ultimately for the majority of sufferers mobility incrementally returns over a period of 18 months to two years.

Treatment options depend on any previous injury or underlying medical condition.

As for any joint, if your shoulder is injured or becomes painful, see your GP early. Avoiding activities that overload the joint, getting advice regarding exercises to strengthen supporting muscles and ensuring there are no contributing underlying medical conditions are essential to good recovery. * Dr Lorraine Baker is a GP from Melbourne’s eastern suburbs and a former President of AMA Victoria.
