Bring on painting season Now is the best time of year to spring into action with paint and paintbrush, according Geelong Colourworld's Brian Inglis.

"People are looking to get things completed before Christmas, when the shopping gets pretty hectic," the father-of-three said.

"The sun is shining and it's not raining much. Spring's a pretty good time for it."

And with more than 30 years painting Brian has the expertise to help locals renovate, repaint and give their home new life.

"It's just good to go out onsite and show people how to go about it, so they get off on the right foot," he said.

"I come out and give them tradesman-style advice."

Brian has a vast knowledge of paint preparation, interior and exterior painting, restoration, products, accessories, colour selection and wallpaper.

That expertise gives him and colleague Damon Brown an edge over some paint sellers in Geelong.

"They can sell the paint but do they know how to prepare and apply it?" he asks.

"We know how to do that and what paint to use where."

Brian has seen trends come and go, from the mission brown exteriors of the '70s, pinks and greys of the '80s, neutral colours of the '90s to the metallic paints of modern day.

"The change I've noticed in the last five years is wallpaper - it's going really strong at the moment," he says.

"We stock an impressive range of wallpaper in bright prints and textures to suit any decor or personal style.

"We've got over 100 books of it here - murals, wallpaper, grass weave and everything.

Many Geelong locals are using greys and whites to show off their interior furniture and centre pieces, Brian says.

"They're decorating their living rooms with paintings, furniture and things like that."

Not only can Brian devise the right colour scheme for a home, he also knows which type of paint best suits each household.

Celebrate Geelong furniture history with a bargain or two After 34 years The Big Shed is closing down and its owners, the Dillon family, are holding a massive sale to celebrate decades in the furniture industry.

Everyone knows The Big Shed but customers still do a double take when they enter and see two acres of undercover furniture and gifts for the first time.

Located in South Geelong, the imposing heritage shed was built about a century ago.

It was originally the home of Geelong Bottle Company before a major wool firm took it over.

American soldiers based at Queenscliff Fort used the shed as emergency housing during World War II, and it had many other uses throughout the decades.

In the early '80s Geelong businessman John Dillon bought it and launched The Big Shed with wife Lucie.

They have met thousands of local customers over the 34 years and want to thank them for their support.

"I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to encounter a vast number of Geelong residents," John says.

"It's been a wonderful experience and I have made many friends along the way."

Their daughter Shelley took over the business in 2006 after John and Lucie retired.

She urges Geelong locals to have a look at the store's massive range one last time, and pick up an amazing bargain too.

Former mayor Darryn Lyons has announced he will run in the 2018 Victorian Election, amid months of speculation he would contest the seat of Geelong.

"I have unfinished business," he told the Indy yesterday.

"I will be giving voters, appalled by the childish behaviour, theatrics and vitriol of the major parties, a viable alternative."

The Geelong businessman will stand as an independent in a bid to wrest the seat from Labor, which holds it by a six per cent margin.

The November election stands on a knife edge, with Labor leading the coalition 51 to 49 in the latest Newspoll and Galaxy results.

Mr Lyons said he was not a "stooge" for the Liberals, despite once being a member of that party.

"I am not a puppet of any political party. In fact, I am one of thousands of Australians totally disillusioned with our present politicians."

He declined to outline who he would preference but said he had not "spoken to any party or individual."

Police are appealing for witnesses to a fatality on the Geelong Ring Road early Wedneday morning where a pedestrian was struck and killed by a city-bound truck.

The 50-year-old man from Leopold died at the scene near the Broderick Road overpass after being hit by the semi-articulated vehicle travelling on the ring road near Princes Highway at 7.20am.

All Melbourne-bound lanes between Bacchus Marsh Road and Forest Road South were closed until 11.30am with traffic diverted off the ring road at Bacchus Marsh Road and through Lara.

Senior Sergeant Gary Wilson of Waurn Ponds Highway Patrol said several police units attended and an Ambulance Victoria crew was deployed to confirm the man was deceased.

"Eight members of our highway patrol were deployed and other local uniformed police managed traffic diversions," he said.

"Drivers were fantastic about the detour given the impost on them at that hour trying to get to work and were exceedingly well behaved. We greatly appreciate their cooperation."

Senior Sergeant Wilson said the man's death was being investigated by officers of the Highway Patrol at Waurn Ponds.

"It appears to be self-harm and police are preparing an initial report for the Coroner," he said.

"We asked people to come forward if they viewed the incident."

A narrow margin in parliament could mean a greater share of power for independents like Mr Lyons, if he were elected.

"It would be a wonderful thing for the Geelong people wouldn't it?" he said.

Mr Lyons' candidacy will shake up the previously safe seat, held by Labor MP Christine Couzens since 2014 and by Labor since 1999.

"Even if I don't win, the Geelong people will benefit - it will be a tighter race," Mr Lyons said.

"Incredible things will happen for the city in terms of more promises from both sides of parliament.

"Geelong should never be a safe seat, a safe seat doesn't get anything for anyone.

"Geelong, along with the rest of regional Victoria, is entitled to its fair share of support from this metro-centric government.

"I will fight relentlessly to get the funding and recognition the city deserves."

The Andrews Victorian Government's sacking of council 2016 was not his motivation for running, he said.

"Certainly, that disgraceful act against democratically-elected councillors has left a bitter taste, but it's time to move forward," he said.

Mr Lyons listed law and order, health, transport, jobs and rescue packages for under-threat grass roots groups as priorities.

"I want Geelong to again become a vibrant, liveable city that offers jobs, lifestyle and a future for young people," he said.

"For example, revitalisation of our waterfront has ground to a halt. Yet we have the virtually forgotten Western Beach, one of our greatest assets,

A woman in her 60s was taken to hospital in a stable condition with leg injuries after crashing into a barrier on the Princes Highway, Mount Moriac on Wednesday morning.

In a separate incident that afternoon a man in his 30s was taken to Geelong Hospital after breaking the barriers of a bridge along the Hamilton Highway between Inverleigh and Teesdale.

Alcoa's decommissioned Anglesea Power Station was finally demolished by controlled explosion this week after an unsuccessful attempt in May. Crews left its chimney intact to be retained for the future redevelopment at the site.

Barry has carved out a heart shape message of hope for interstate farmers battling drought and creating an event space including a 40acre carpark for the Canola Flowering Festival community fund-raiser.

His crop is already at its peak and flowering with an amazing display of colour, perfect for public viewing.

"All the community are getting together to show their support for farmers up north," he said.

"Proceeds will go to farming families in most need in the Upper Hunter region and across to Broken Hill - particularly those affected by suicide and divorce. Some people have been doing it really tough for five years now."

Local couple Carmen and Bob Chapman are helping to coordinate the festival.

Carmen said 40 volunteers from Freshwater Creek CFA, churches, businesses and Kiwanis, Rotary and Quota International service clubs from Ocean Grove, Torquay and Geelong are supporting the event.

"All we want now is the people and good weather," she said.

Accusations of cuts to radiology services at Geelong have received support from a local union official, who put forth the claims at a forum last month.

Victorian Allied Health Professionals Association (VAHPA) assistant secretary Andrew Hewat backed the accusations by local socialist candidates in the Indy last week.

"There's a whole raft of (services) that were specifically targeted because they're expensive examinations and highly specialised," he said.

"What makes it so much worse is that they're the sort of things that only Barwon Health would do locally.

"People who would have access to it ... would now have to go to Melbourne for that sort of service."

Mr Hewat works as a sonographer in Barwon Health's radiology department and has worked on-and-off with the health provider for decades.

"I take this almost personally because the people that they're attacking are my colleagues that I've worked with for 37 years."

He was "happy to stick (his) neck out" on behalf of University Hospital Geelong employees as VAHPA assistant secretary, he said.

"It would be a very ugly look for (Barwon Health) if they came after me," he said.

TAC reports $477m loss

Improved roads, facilities, service, accommodation and tourism activities is vital for the region's economic future, according to Great Ocean Road Regional Tourism.

CEO Liz Price said release of domestic tourism data by Tourism Research Australia this week highlighted strong growth in the tourism spend along the Great Ocean Road for the year ending June 2018.

The National Visitor Survey results showed the Great Ocean Road region topped $1.2 billion in total domestic tourism expenditure, a healthy slice of the total $14 billion spend across Victoria.

"The data is showing positive signs in terms of increases in bed nights and total expenditure," Ms Price said.

"Our focus remains on growing length of stay, expenditure and dispersal of visitors."

Ms Price said strong partnerships between relevant agencies would help drive greater economic benefit in both inland and coastal communities in the region.

"The level of collaboration with the six councils in our region is pretty good. They recognise that dispersal of visitors to the Great Ocean Road is going to be good for all," she said.

"The main challenge is that with growth in numbers we need to get people visiting our region to stay longer and spend more money.

"This will only be achieved improving product quality and marketing and building up the breadth of experiences on offer. We rely a lot on nature-based tourism."

The survey revealed domestic overnight travel in the Great Ocean Road region reached 2.2 million people yielding $923m while the domestic day-tripper market rose 8.1 per cent to 3.1 million visitors, who spent $311m.

It said that this result was driven by "external economic factors, record investments in infrastructure, higher weekend payments for attendant care workers and claims payments".

The Chair and CEO's report said the TAC had been recently assured by external actuaries PwC that "the TAC remains in a strong financial position and is well placed to support clients".

"As a result of a record infrastructure investment, our decision to increase attendant care fees and an increase in paramedical costs, the TAC recorded a performance from insurance operations of negative $424 million.

"Strong returns in financial markets softened the liability impact from a decrease in Government bond rates, resulting in an overall loss of $447 million for 2017/18."

Highlights reported for the second year of the TAC's 2020 strategy include: • $1.49 billion paid to 51,000 clients to help get their lives back on track 10,025 clients registered in the first year of myTAC and 40,000 receipts processed 30 independent living units completed or under construction for the most seriously injured client as part of a $40 million investment 3596 health care providers signed up to LanternPay within its first year 82% staff engagement.

TAC also gave direct support to local hospitals and welfare providers, not-for-profit charities and events in Geelong during the past financial year.

These partnerships included Give Where You Live $60,000, Barwon Sports Academy $35,000, Barwon Health Foundation $35,000, Cotton On Foundation $20,000, Back to Back Theatre $15,000 and Karingal $15,000.

"The region's success today is due to 30 years of marketing. All that work has given the Great Ocean Road an international reputation, so we've got something to springboard off to ensure people stay 7-10 days."

Ms Price said the Great Ocean Road was also an important domestic day trip market for families who want more free activities.

"There has been phenomenal population growth in greater western Melbourne and this is their local playground."

By Gill Cooper Rex Stephens is gearing up to select and groom 50 of his best budgies with a spray bottle, toothbrush and tweezers for entry into the Royal Geelong Show on 18-21 October.

The 60-year-old is among enthusiastic members of Geelong and District Budgerigar Society participating in this year's agricultural show.

A plumber by trade, Rex also shares his softer side caring for baby budgies bred at the "Budgie Hilton Hotel" he created at his Queenscliff home.

"I joined the club in 1994 when I was in my late 30s," he said. "I'd always had them as a kid - dad would bring them home and I'd train them up."

"My wife Sonia suggested I get into the birds after I finished playing footy instead of spending so much time at the pub," he laughed.He now has a colourful array of adult and juvenile budgies in 48 breeding cages, three holding cages and three aviaries in his backyard.Rex

SHOW TIME: Baby budgies receive loving care. said he spends about an hour daily sorting their seed and water and three hours cleaning the aviaries each weekend.

"My favourites are the violets - I like the colour of violet budgies," he said.

Rex will have a selection of in-condition non-breeding adults and babies on display from the Saturday of the show.

The Geelong Budgerigar Society has been running for 84 years and meets at its showgrounds clubrooms in Breakwater at 7.30pm every third Tuesday of the month.

Fast rail vow ‘impossible’

By Luke Voogt A 32-minute train to Geelong by 2022 is “impossible”, State Government has said, following a coalition election promise of high-speed rail across Victoria.

Opposition leader Matthew Guy on Wednesday announced plans for “Europeanstyle” high-speed rail across Victoria.

But Transport Minister Jacinta Allan rubbished the proposal, saying it raised “more questions than answers”.

“The Leader of the Opposition is unable to answer these questions,” she said.

“When it comes to the Liberal party and regional rail you know they just cannot be trusted.”

The “little-detailed” plan “unravelled” on Wednesday morning as ABC presenter John Faine questioned Mr Guy on how he would deliver fast rail to Gippsland, Ms Allen said.

“He had three different positions in the space of three minutes about how he would deliver his proposed policy to the Gippsland community.”

Based on information from the Department of Transport, the earliest possible delivery time for fast rail to Geelong was 2025, a spokesperson for Minister Allan told the Indy.

“Delivering a 32-minute service to Geelong by 2022 is impossible,” they said.

“Based on standard government delivery timeframes, construction on these projects

would not begin until 2020/21, and the travel time savings could not be realised until 2025 at the earliest.”

The proposal would require two new metro tracks to Wyndham Vale, a new rail tunnel into Melbourne CBD and new trains, the spokesperson said.

A new metro tunnel would take five to seven years to complete (by 2025 to 2028) and a new western line required a similar time frame, the spokesperson said.

Mr Guy announced the plan on Wednesday to “decentralise” jobs and population throughout Victoria.

The “European-style” high-speed rail was the “cornerstone” of the coalition’s plan to ease

“population squeeze”, he said.

“Reaching speeds of up to 200km/h, Victoria’s new high speed rail network will be the fastest in Australia.”

A coalition government, if elected, would build the “$15 billion to $19 billion super-infrastructure project” in three stages over the next ten years, Mr Guy said.

“Within the first term of a Liberal Nationals Government, travel times between Geelong and Melbourne will be slashed to just 32 minutes, an improvement of 26 minutes on the current timetable.

“Building European-style high-speed rail will also take more cars off our roads, and that will save lives and cut traffic congestion.”

By Gill Cooper The wonders of the night sky have fascinated humanity since time began but members of the Astronomical Society of Geelong take a closer interest than most.

President Dave Murton said the Society included “an interesting and eclectic group of people from all walks of life who were inspired by moon launches, the stuff of science fiction and a love of night skies”.

“We are essentially a group of like-minded people but with different areas of special interest. Some are visual observers, do deep sky photography or even radio astronomy,” he said.

He said the group has about 30 core members with 15-20 members attending most Friday nights.

“We are slowly building our equipment up and modernising cameras and telescopes,” he said.

“If it’s a clear night we’ll get out the telescopes and provide a bit of guidance to newer members. “ “The age range is from early 20s to people in their 80s and we can have some lively discussions.”

He said one of the younger members, Leigh Westerland, has been the “Curator of Instruments” on the Society’s Committee for the past two years.

Leigh cares for the Society’s equipment and checks collimation of the lens which aligns a telescopes mirrors to improve the focus of images seen through the eyepiece.

“I’m an upholsterer by trade and this lets me get hands-on with high tech. It was a gap in my life and I enjoy the challenge,” he said.

Society volunteers will hold open day information sessions on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the Royal Geelong Show.

LETTERS Fix Comcare before relocating To the Editor I write in response to the article published on 31 August, regarding lobbying to relocate national public sector insurer Comcare to Geelong.

While the relocation of any government agency to Geelong will likely be beneficial for our city, it is important that the many deficiencies of the Comcare scheme are not missed in considering this proposal, noting particularly how poorly the scheme treats Victorian workers.

As a lawyer in Geelong, every day I see the negative impacts on those forced to navigate the Comcare system, which is unfairly skewed to the advantage of employers.

It is not a scheme based on fairness and balance - it allows employers unlimited time periods to respond to claims, it forces workers to lodge separate claim forms for every individual medical expense and it offers a substantially lower cap on compensation and legal fees than state-based schemes.

Originally set up for white collar workers, large private companies have been allowed to migrate onto Comcare.

This has resulted in blue-collar workers being pushed into a scheme out of step with the dangerous realities of sectors such as manufacturing, construction and transport - important local Geelong industries.

If we are to attract government agencies such as Comcare to Geelong then it is crucial that we also seek to fix the scheme to ensure it genuinely looks after and supports injured Geelong workers.

I agree with Gary Oraniuk's lack of confidence in our political parties.

Their wars of self-preservation waged by personal ambitions are often a real hindrance to the wellbeing of our nation.

Delayed letters for forum?

The letters received by many on the Bellarine on 25 September for Sarah Henderson's "Community meeting" the next morning 26 September at Leopold were dated 13 September.

As the meeting was focused on the aged residents of the Bellarine, now 35 per cent of the population, was Ms Henderson genuinely interested in hearing from those who would have liked the opportunity to ask many questions about residential aged xare, given the recent 4 Corners expose, Commonwealth Government services for the aged which are proving more difficult to access each day and other important matters related to the Bellarine aged and ageing?

Perhaps it was the fault of Australia Post that her letters took 12 days to be delivered, or maybe it was another example of late notice therefore limited attendance and no troublesome questioning.

There are literally thousands of Bellarine residents aged 65 years and over.

Did MsHenderson really give them a chance to attend and seek answers to many concerning issues?

Now in its 26th year, Around the Bay is one of Australia’s biggest one-day bike rides.

By Luke Voogt Health awareness and a passion for motorbikes have driven Grovedale’s Wayne Milner to raise $4000 for the Geelong Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in just a month.

“I just rang people up,” said the 61-yearold, who works as a mechanic at Anglesea Golf Course.

“I went to the chiropractor, I went to the dentist, ex-business people that I dealt with years ago... obviously people were pretty generous.”

Wayne moved to Geelong 19 years ago and relatives from as far as Kalgoorlie and Adelaide donated to his tally.

“The ladies at the golf course gave me a very nice donation too,” he said.

Wayne has his own health battle against “minor” prostate cancer, which doctors detected early due to tests.

He urged all men over 40 to get their prostate checked.

“It’s nothing compared with a biopsy is it?”

He is no stranger to depression either - he lost his then-22-year-old son Andy in a road accident 11 years ago.

“You have to be strong,” he said.

“It might make people a bit uneasy, if there’s grief involved but I think you’ve got to talk about things.”

Despite staying on top of his health, Wayne admits he has a “problem”.

“I’ve got about eight motorbikes in the shed,” he said.

“I got my first minibike when I was 10. I think I bought my daughter Cassie her first minibike when she was a three-month-old baby.”

He joined about 150 riders on Sunday, riding his Royal Enfield Continental GT to promote men’s health.

“There are eight suicides per day in Australia, and six are men - they’re mostly young fellas too,” he said.

River death not suspicious

Fundraiser of love

A police investigation into the death of Melanie Blogg has concluded her death is "no longer suspicious", according to Geelong detectives.

Two rowing coaches discovered the body of the TRAGIC DEATH: 40-year-old woman Deceased woman among reeds in Bar- Melanie Blogg. won River just west of James Harrison Bridge on 31 August.

The two men had run out of fuel and come ashore at the bridge just before 6pm, when they saw human remains and called police.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Craig Dooley said that extra CCTV footage gleaned from local businesses in recent weeks had helped to follow her last movements from Geelong West and towards the river.

Early CCTV footage sourced by investigators showed her leaving her home in Halstead Place on 17 August.

Following the discovery police issued a plea for information from the public via Crime Stoppers.

"The CCTV provided by local businesses has proven invaluable to allow us to reach the conclusions we have," Det Act Snr Sgt Dooley said.

He said Geelong's Criminal Investigation Unit would now prepare an inquest brief for the Coroner's Court to consider.

A Coroner's Court spokesperson this week confirmed Ms Blogg's death was subject to an active investigation but told the Indy it was too early to indicate if and when an inquest would be held.

"That's at the discretion of the Coroner," the spokesperson said.

Clifton Springs' Pauline Dwyer is honouring her late daughter Belinda Karlos by supporting an education campaign to reduce skin cancer across Victoria.

She has been busy arranging the Belinda's Legacy Melanoma Research fundraiser to be held at Geelong Ballroom Dance Club in Hamlyn Heights on Saturday 27 October.

Pauline said proceeds from the event would go to Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre to help fund research and resources needed to discover cancer cures.

"After Belinda was diagnosed with melanoma in 2012, she worked hard to make others more aware of the importance of sun protection and the consequences of skin cancer," Pauline said.

"She was a loving mum who died two years ago at 42, leaving her young daughter Ebony.

It's been a very hard time for us all.

"This fundraiser is open to anyone interested in supporting Belinda's legacy. We'll have music, dancing, entertainment and raffles to help raise funds for Peter Mac. "People don't even have to dance," she said.

"They can just come along and enjoy the evening - including a latin dance demo and lucky number draws in balloons with great prizes.

"We are very grateful for all the donations from local businesses. There's a great variety of hampers, vouchers, wine - even office chairs - up for grabs as prizes and we still welcome more donations."

The local event coincides with the recent launch of Cancer Council Victoria's new SunSmart campaign featuring Belinda and her family in online, free-to-air TV and radio advertising.

Torquay's Josh Benham could not believe he had made it to an AFL Grand Final, until he was alongside 100,000 screaming fans at the 'G. "The anxiety about the ticket was almost as much as about the game itself," the long-time Eagles fan said.

"I was covering my eyes with my scarf," Josh said.

"It was a once in a lifetime thing. There were probably ten people around me who were crying with joy."

Sheed marked the ball after a controversial "non-call", which some football commentators believed should have been a free against West Coast's Willie Rioli for blocking.

Josh disagreed, saying, "Rioli was going for the ball before Sheed got there".

The win was vindication after some commentators wrote the Eagles off earlier in the season following injuries to players like Nic Naitanui, Josh said.

And his $5 bet on the Eagles winning the premiership before round 1 was the icing on the cake.

"I won $335!" he said.

Jordan shanks ‘Malcolm’

By Luke Voogt "One foggy morn, sometime in September of 2013," Jordan Shanks was walking bleary-eyed along a Sydney beach - when he bumped into Malcolm Turnbull.

"I recognised the sound of someone yelling at their assistant through their phone," the prolific Youtuber known as Friendly Jordies said.

Shanks re-enacted the event in his Youtube portrayal of Turnbull as a 1700s plutocrat.

"No Margaret! You've put me in awful position and I don't think you understand the ramifications of it," a foppish 'Malcolm' yells into the phone.

"How could you empathise? You don't understand the burdens of power, you're nothing but a pack mule!"

The two collided and Turnbull reportedly moaned "bah!"

"The best way I could describe it was (a sound of) disgust and fear," Shanks told the Indy.

"I was transported back to the 1700s!"

The two stared in stunned silence before Turnbull went back to his phone.

"He was disgusted that a commoner had touched him and for that I loved him," he laughed.

"I think that's the soul of Malcolm - an extremely removed plutocrat."

Now Shanks brings 'MT' to Geelong stages "so you don't have to read his books".

"It took me a year to muster the energy to read three of his biographies," he said.

"Probably about four fifths of that man's life was sitting in an office."

Shanks began to notice a pattern in Turnbull's life.

"He's extremely intelligent and ruthless but when he gets to the top he doesn't know what to do," he said.

"He's like a dog who chases your car but when

he gets it he doesn't know what to do with it."

Turnbull's lack of genuineness led to his downfall as Prime Minister, Shanks reckoned.

"He's clearly an extremely arrogant toff, which is OK, just be honest about it."

The most "lower class" person Turnbull would have associated with was probably his doctor, he added.

"He's not rubbing shoulders with the schmos down at the coalmining pub."

Shanks, who has 192,000 Youtube subscribers, makes no secret of being a Labor fan.

"I support them because I read," he said.

"You can say a million things as to why they're bad or inefficient - and you'd be right.

"But every good program that has made this country ... these are all things that the Labor party initiated."

Shanks reads between casting as a model and various radio and stage gigs.

"As a male model you get paid as much as a MacDonald's worker until you're 40," he said.

"Then you start doing cigarette and car ads and can start living in relative luxury."

Watching countless Noam Chomsky documentaries on a Korean exchange trip during his International Studies degree also shaped his views.

"My entire $20,000 degree was worth it just to watch a bunch of documentaries I otherwise wouldn't have," he said.

Shanks' most popular videos mock cashed-up hipsters, bogans, festivals and Aussie stereotypes.

"All I do is put on a crap wig and say what they say themselves in videos," Shanks said.

"The difference is they are serious."

He looked forward to his latest Geelong Performing Arts Centre gig on Sunday night.

"I love Geelong. It gets such a bum rap from Melbourne people," he said.

Aireys Inlet’s vintage finds

Rockabilly shindig

Aireys Inlet Market kicks off on Sunday with 65 stalls of homemade, vintage and recycled goods, and local food and produce.

Surf Coast Shire approved the market for 2018-19, a decision its operator Libby Stapleton welcomed.

"Council wants us to expand from our existing 14 markets up to 17, so that we operate year round," she said.

The 2018-19 calendar includes a new twilight market on 19 January, several markets during peak season and new dates from July to September. "We wanted to give a twilight market a go in Aireys," Stapleton said.

"There is a lot going on across the coast in January so it's great to offer people another reason to visit our town."

The shire raised the cap on stalls from 50 to 65 for the market.

"We're really overwhelmed by the level of interest in the market," Stapleton said.

The Aireys Inlet Market runs from 9am to 1pm at the Aireys Inlet Community Hall on Sunday.

Geelong will host a great line-up of artists this Sunday for the Rats Tatts n' PinUps event supporting Australian hot rod and rock 'n roll culture.

The travelling rockabilly circus combines a car and bike show, bands and food trucks for a massive party at the Gateway Hotel, Corio.

This family-friendly event runs all day from 11am to 5pm and gold coin donations are welcome.

This is the third year the Rats Tatts n' PinUps event has come to the Gateway, with the musical line-up this year including four great rockabilly and tribute bands.

Melbourne rockabillly group Wild Turkey kicks off proceedings, followed by Fandango (ZZ Top tribute), Miss Rosie and the Top Cats (Melbourne Rockabilly) and KISS THISS (Kiss tribute).

Among the performers is Caroline Springs vocalist Rosie Conforto and her new band the Top Cats - including Robbi Thompson on guitar, bass player Aaron Schembri and drummer Christian Nativo.

Conforto said the four friends, all from the western suburbs, formed the band 12 months ago and were looking forward to returning to Geelong, after performing locally at Easter.

"Geelong crowds are the best crowds. They are most appreciative and very responsive which makes my job so much easier," she said.

"They listen to you and get up and dance from the start - they really get into it which makes it great fun to perform."

Conforto said the mixed line-up of rockabilly and rock bands at the event would cater for every generation with hits from the 1950s80s.

The 33-year-old said she "fell into rockabilly" performing backing vocals for Normie Rowe and Colleen Hewitt on the Go Show Gold several years ago.

Her voice was well matched to rockabilly music and her personal style of bright red hair fitted the scene, she said.

"Although I have no tatts at all - my nose ring is my token effort at being brave," she laughed.

Her band will perform two 45 minute sets featuring a mix of old school rock 'n roll from Elvis to Buddy Holly then thumping 80s rockabilly music.

"We take the classics like Kids in America and What's Up by 4 Non Blondes and give it a real rockabilly twist," she said.

"I love the new element with tribute bands - it appeals to a wider audience and introduces live music to more people at these events."

By Alistair Kennedy Mercedes-Benz has released an upgraded version of its popular C-Class range with some styling changes at each end; new fully-digital instrument panel and infotainment screen; and a new petrol-electric/hybrid powerplant.

The C-Class has been around since 1993 and is arguably the most important vehicle in the Benz range consistently outselling the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4.

While this MY2018 update of the fourthgeneration W205 was described simply as a facelift by Australian CEO Horst von Sanden there have in fact been significant changes with around half of its 13,000 parts being new.

The 2018 C-Class comes with four body styles: sedan, wagon (Estate), coupe and cabriolet with prices ranging from $63,400 for a C200 sedan through to $101,900 for a C300 Cabriolet. The AMG-enhanced C43 model, also available in the same four variants, was released at the same time as the standard CClass models. An AMG C 63 will complete the range when it arrives in early 2019.

External changes in the C-Class are focused on the front of the car with new Multibeam LED headlamps, grille and bumper. There are also new taillights, body colours and wheel designs.

More noticeable changes are inside the car with two large screens dominating the dashboard area. Immediately in front of the driver is 12.3-inch digital instrument display and in the centre of the dash is a 10.25-inch media display that can be customised to three differ-

ent themes. The media system allows access to both Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.

Interior space is good with an impressive amount of rear seat both leg and head room.

The major change under the bonnet of the C-Class is a new 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine in the C200 models. It has what Benz describes as a 'mild hybrid' system. It uses a 48-volt onboard electrical system called EQ Boost that adds 10 kilowatts to the engine's 135 kW. Importantly that extra power kicks in at low revs and so effectively eliminates any turbo lag. During deceleration the battery gets charged with a dashboard displaying the differing levels of power and charging as conditions change.

The EQ Boost system also helps keep fuel consumption marginally down to a factory tested 6.4 litres per 100 km. The C200 cannot operate purely on battery power.

Standard safety features on all Benz C-Class models include nine airbags; enhanced ABS brakes; Adaptive Brake with Hold function, brake drying and hill hold; Electronic Stability Control with acceleration skid control; Blind Spot Assist; tyre pressure warning; and Pre-Safe crash anticipatory system. The C200 cruised comfortably and quietly throughout a recent test run near Tullamarine.

Overtaking showed the benefit of almost immediate torque supplied by the EQ Boost.

Ride comfort is very good and noise and vibration are well controlled with very little intrusion into the cabin.

Top service in Geelong for European vehicles Combining quality workmanship with a passion for servicing prestige, luxury or sports vehicles is what led Roy Vicary to establish his new venture Geelong European Automotive.

Roy embarked on an apprenticeship at Shea Auto in South Geelong over 30 years ago which began his interest in European cars.

"I started out working on old Volvo cars such as the P1800s and 120s and went on from there," he says.

Since then Roy his passion and training in European vehicles and has more than 10 years industry experience based in Europe and in the United Kingdom.

Roy also developed his technical skills working as a mechanic at dealerships including Noel Gibson - Fiat, Lancia, Alfa Romeo, Peck and Stokes Motors - BMW and Geelong City Motors - Mercedes Benz.

After working as an independent Volvo specialist in Geelong, Roy has now established his own garage in Breakwater primarily servicing European vehicles of all brands from Audi to Volvo. "We focus on affordable log book servicing and have the ability to do whatever repairs are required," Roy says.

"We provide diagnostics, mechanical and auto electrical servicing including vehicle safety systems, drive systems, climate control and entertainment systems.

"We also offer free headlight alignment and free laser wheel alignments as part of our service."

Sporty Lexus impresses

By Ewan Kennedy In an interesting move Lexus will import only hybrid versions of its Lexus ES 300.

Now in its seventh generation, the Lexus ES is being offered in Luxury and Sports Luxury grades.

Compared with the outgoing gen-six Lexus ES, power has been increased by almost six per cent, to 160kW, while fuel consumption has been reduced by 16.4 per cent, to 4.6 litres/100km as measured on the Australian combined cycle.

A new-generation 2.5-litre petrol engine is among the most thermally efficient engines in a production vehicle.

It is linked to an electric hybrid system with components that are smaller, lighter and more efficient than in the outgoing model.

In an apparently odd move, the Japanese company that has made its name by providing near-silent running now offers drivers the chance to turn on an 'active sound control'.

This generates an audio feedback that gives the aural effect of up and downshifts like those experienced with a geared automatic transmission.

We will comment on this when we borrow a road test car from Lexus.

Alloy wheels are standard; 17-inch for the ES Luxury and 18-inch under the Sports Luxury.

To counteract noise that can be generated by low-profile tyres the 18-inch wheels have a hollow rim structure to help reduce the noise.

Infotainment is controlled through a 12.3inch multimedia screen and there is a wireless phone charger.

Satellite navigation, Lexus Enform and DAB+ digital radio are standard.

COUPE-LIKE: The new Lexus ES 350h.

ES Luxury features a 10-speaker Pioneer audio system.

For Sports Luxury, the Lexus ES debuts a 17-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound system.

The Lexus Remote Touch Interface pad has been redesigned and gains vibration feedback.

Heated front seats in ES Luxury offer 10way power adjustment.

In Sports Luxury, they are also ventilated.

There's 14-way adjustment for the driver's seat and 12-way for the passenger seat.

Rear headroom has been improved while luggage space benefits from the hybrid battery

being relocated under the rear seat.

The LCD instrument panel incorporates a 7.0-inch multi-information display.

Other ES Luxury equipment includes dualzone air-conditioning, automatic, a moonroof, electronic park brake, premium trim and a power-adjustable steering column.

Sports Luxury expands the air-conditioning to three zones with a humidity sensor.

Flying start for anglers ON THE BITE Adam Van der Lugt Snapper, snapper, snapper! This week saw the snapper run get off to a flying start with some amazing captures reported, including fish over 10kg .Fishing 'the bend' just out off Clifton Springs was what most people had in mind, and this resulted in some great fish being boated.

Using fresh squid, barracouta and garfish was most productive with the humble pilchard and silver whiting also accounting for fish.

Snapper were also caught in the inner harbour, with Rob Thornton landing a beast of 7.95kg not far from St Helens boat ramp on a fresh-caught couta fillet.

The Corio Bay inner harbour hosted good Salmon fishing right along the Geelong waterfront for anglers casting soft plastics.

Local fisher Josh Whitford reported having a good session fishing from Fisherman's Pier, where he caught a number of Salmon up to 1kg.

Pinkie snapper to 50cm are also present along the waterfront and are holding against structure, they will respond well to soft plastics worked on the bottom or baits like pilchard or bluebait.

Squid fishing was again fantastic across the Bellarine Peninsula with Clifton Springs, St Leonards, Portarlington and Queenscliff all producing the goods to those drifting the weed beds with 3 to 3.5 jigs, while the Point Lonsdale Bight was the place to be for the big models being caught on baited jigs.

Queenscliff and around to Clifton Springs has been good for Whiting in excess of 40cm.

Fishing the tide change, preferably of an evening, using squid and pippy, has been most effective.

Fishing freshwater has been great with a number of small lakes being stocked with rainbow trout for the school holidays.

St Augustines waterhole in Highton received a few hundred rainbow trout that you can expect to catch on Powerbait or worms fished on the bottom with a light sinker.

Lake Bolac had another good run of fish over the weekend with anglers that camped overnight finding the fish biting well at all times of the day and into the dark.

Fish over 2kg were taken on Berkley trout eggs and Powerbait.

Also worth a visit is Lake Elingamite near Cobden where brown trout and big redfin have been taken by anglers trolling shallow diving lures or fishing mudeye under a float on the edge of the weed beds.

New Cats coach to begin finals quest

By Jim Timberlake The annual ritual of rifling through cricket bags to check on the state of dirty whites and mouldy socks is on in earnest this week with the local cricket season beginning tomorrow.

Geelong Cricket Club moves into the new season well placed to again make finals, although the loss of coach Andre Borovec cannot be understated.

The club legend has been invaluable off the field for the past few seasons, however a welldeserved promotion to the coaching panel of the Victorian team will leave a big hole at the club.

Liam Buchanan has stepped into the role, and early indications are that he looks to be building on the work Borovec has put in, with the team shaping up nicely, and looking like it could be a real force this summer.

The club kicks off its campaign tomorrow with a one day game at home against perennial finalist Melbourne.

This could be the perfect time for the Cats to take on one of the competition's heavyweights, and hit the ground running.

Geelong Cricket Association also starts tomorrow, with the only change in division one being the return to the top of Bell Post Hill, at the expense of Murgheboluc.

Reigning premier East Belmont will host Grovedale in a one day game at Winter Reserve, with both clubs boasting quality recruits who will be keen to stamp their mark at their new clubs.

For East Belmont, Tom Elliott comes in following a season off, but prior to that he was a star for Geelong Cricket Club, as well as his home club Geelong City.

The stylish right-hander will shore up the Lions already strong batting order.

Grovedale have dealt with the retirement of superstar all-rounder Glen Talarico in the best possible way, recruiting Jordan Moran from Dubbo.

Moran has represented New South Wales at the Australian Country Championships, and looks to be a match winner.

He, along with his new team mates, will need to be at their best tomorrow though,

Jim Timberlake. if they are to reverse last season's semi final thrashing.

Selections in bold; ST JOSEPHS v Bell Post Hill, EAST BELMONT v Grovedale, Leopold v NORTH GEELONG, South Barwon v GEELONG CITY, Lara v NEWTOWN & CHILWELL Division two will again be an eight-team competition, with Murgheboluc dropping down from division one, while Thomson have come in at the expense of Newcomb and District.

There has been a host of changes throughout this division, Marshall have recruited heavily, securing Corey Walter from Collendina as coach, while also adding Nathan Frye and James Menzies to the squad.

This will help fill the hole left by young gun Mitch McCoach, who is having a crack in division one with Geelong City.

Manifold Heights has also recruited well, with Murgheboluc veteran Ben Nicholls coming over as coach to replace Chris Bambury.

The Sharks' young squad will be up against it this season, but Nicholls looks the perfect replacement to help them strive for success.

A round of one day games kicks off the season tomorrow, selections in bold: BELL PARK v St Peters, Manifold Heights v HIGHTON, MARSHALL v Thomson, MURGHEBOLUC v Torquay.

Division three returns to a ten-team competition, with Teesdale and Bannockburn having been added to what had previously been a turf-only division.

The two former Southern Leigh Districts clubs were in the cricketing wilderness last season, but have been granted the right to compete at a level more befitting of their abilities.

The two met in last year's grand final in their lower division, with Teesdale winning on that occasion, and with a new coach at the helm in Peter Cruden, they will be looking to start of this campaign in the same fashion they left off.

In other news, Guild Saints has appointed East Belmont veteran Michael Krig as their coach, while Anthony Grace has returned to lead Corio after a stint at Bell Park, with the talented youngster taking a couple with him in the hope of returning Corio to finals cricket.

Taylor chases PB in Hawaii Ironman quest

By Luke Voogt Torquay father-of-two Nathan Taylor competes in his third Ironman World Championship in Hawaii next Saturday, taking on a gruelling 225km triathlon in brutal conditions.

"I am hoping to use my previous experience to have my best race to date - three times's a charm," he told the Indy from Kona, Hawaii.

Taylor arrived in Hawaii this week, after qualifying in May by winning the 45 to 49 age group in the Ironman Australia at Port Macquarie.

He completed the Port Macquarie course in nine hours and 18 minutes, but admitted getting under ten hours in 30 degree heat and 80 per cent humidity would be difficult.

"I would love to go sub-10 hours in Hawaii for the first time," he said.

"The world championship is renowned for very brutal winds and scorching temperatures.

It is very hot and humid."

But Taylor has his family in his corner willing him on in his quest for a Hawaii personal best.

"My family is amazing - they're very proud," he said.

"It can be tough trying to juggle family life, work life and Ironman life. But my wife Rima is so proud of what I have achieved.

"She is very supportive in my training and racing, and a big believer in following your dreams.

"I couldn't do what I do if I didn't have all the support I get."

And it seems like Geelong is getting behind him too.

"Since leaving on Sunday, I have had constant messages wishing me all the best," he said.

"I get a little bit embarrassed with all the attention, but it means a lot to me, and I am so surprised how many people are inspired and follow my journey."

Though Taylor's two children are young, they are already showing signs of their dad's competitive spirit.

"Both my kids tell me they want to do an Ironman when they grow up," he said.

"I think it's great. But I wouldn't be upset if they don't. I just wish they grow up being fit and healthy.

"I tell everyone I think I am a great role model to my kids. I know they are so proud of me. They just think what I do is the norm.

"My 8-year-old daughter Zara does 11 hours a week training in competitive gymnastics - I think she already knows you've got put in to get the rewards."

Taylor thanked everyone else with him on the journey, ahead of the big race next Saturday (13 October).

"My business partners are extremely supportive," he said.

"The club I train with, Beckworth Racing, had 20 athletes come out on my last big training run to wish me all the best."
