MAKING sure family and close friends feel included in a wedding can be a tough task. The bridal party can only hold so many, flower girls can be hard to wrangle, and reading after reading risks sending guests to sleep. But there are other ways to get them involved. · The bride or groom could carry with them an item passed down through the family, like jewellery or a handkerchief. · A talented relative or family member could provide a musical or dance addition to the ceremony. · Many couples will need someone to look after their music at important moments. · Tap into a loved one’s passion for craft or DIY for table settings, invitations, flowers ... · Family and close friends can greet other

guests, usher them to their seats, collect gifts or watch over the wishing well. Speeches don’t have to be reserved for parents and the bridal party. Couples need two witnesses to their vows. Bridal party members usually perform this role, but it doesn’t have to be the case. The best man doesn’t have to look after the rings. A close friend or relative could guard the bands and hand them over during the ceremony. Incorporate family jewellery Adding a family recipe to the menu could warm hearts as well as bellies. Favourite flowers of loved ones could feature in bouquets or table decorations. A family photo display can include those who can’t be at the event.

Straight to the FINDING the perfect silhouette for their body shape is the key to every bride feeling and looking her best on her big day. But finding the right fit and choosing the wrong neckline could bring everything unstuck. Off-the-shoulder This neckline highlights the shoulders and collarbone, and covers part of the upper arm. It’s good for full-chested and pear-shaped women but bad for broad shoulders and fuller arms. Sweetheart The sweetheart neckline enhances natural curves and is flattering for all body shapes. Bateau This shape follows the curve of the collarbone across the chest to the top of the shoulders.

The demure style elongates the neck. It suits women with smaller breasts and is less flattering for the well-endowed. Halter neck The halter looks best paired with broad shoulders and on taller brides. It can give the illusion of a fuller bust. Scoop This U-shaped neckline will draw the eye downward, lengthening the neck and accentuating collarbones. Jewel This neckline is round and sits at the base of the throat. It accentuates the bust. V-neck The neckline dips down in the front, elongating the silhouette. It works well on petite brides.

Danielle and David Kennedy have 'his and hers' tattoos in the place of their traditional wedding rings. 24
THEY might not be considered traditional, but in today’s day and age, they’ve certainly become a popular practicality. While the act of branding oneself with a symbol of eternal love is an exceptional gesture, the tattooed wedding band is, in many ways, a functional option for the modern couple. Ben Dixon opted to trade his traditional wedding ring for a tattoo roughly two years ago following difficulties he faced wearing jewellery in his professional life. “I did have a really nice silver ring with a diamond spec in the centre, but being a farmer and volunteer CFA member I decided to trade the ring in for a tattoo,” Ben said. “While volunteering, my fingers would swell with the heat and I found it uncomfortable.” Ben’s tattoo was a spontaneous decision brought about when he went to get other ink. “The ‘A’ is for her name and I got the crown because she’s my queen,” he said. Practicality also nudged David and Danielle Kennedy towards their tattooed wedding rings, which the couple received as an anniversary gift. The Kennedys initially traded traditional wedding rings at their ceremony in 2004. “David is a diesel mechanic and it was too dangerous for him to be wearing a ring,” Danielle said. “He had a close call where the ring got caught and it was enough for him to not wear it. "I decided to become a beautician later in life, and being a beautician you don’t wear jewellery. “And then, of course, we were walking around without rings on...people used to mention I wasn’t wearing it; they were always commenting and they didn’t know that you were married so we decided to get them done.” Danielle said they kept their traditional rings to pass onto their children.

By REBECCA SKILTON MARRIAGE is, at its core, the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life. Which is why, despite the numerous external forces and opinions, ceremonies should reflect the uniting couple and their unique love for each other. Cockatoo born Emily Trewin and husband Jason chose to follow this ruling, transforming their favourite holiday location into a breathtaking ceremony that represented their unity. “Make it what you want,” Emily said. “Don’t modify your style to what your family would want. Make sure it’s your day.” The Trewins’ ceremony boasted a romantic vintage rural feel, complete with hay bale pews, gum leaf confetti and a gum-tree arch fitted with a ram’s skull.

While Emily and Jason’s ceremony is a far cry from what could be considered a traditional wedding, it was a ceremony that came of little surprise to guests and allowed the pair to express who they were as a couple. Their reception took place at a holiday park; a picturesque scene when paired with a local creek and Emily’s home-made pingpong-ball fairy lights. Their breathtaking bar was hand-made by a groomsmen, even featuring their own personal home brew. “We had the caravan park owners cook 100 jam donuts as a special dessert. These were delivered in cardboard boxes in a wheelbarrow,“ Emily said. “And all of our cutlery and plates where wooden or cardboard and there was no glass at the reception. Everything could be thrown on the fire pits for easy clean up.“

Choose the
right ring
THERE are many more options than yellow or white gold when it comes to choosing a wedding band. Couples should think about more than just which colour looks best on them, too. The best way to make a decision is to try on a few different bands. There are bands with flat edges, bands with curved edges, wider bands, thinner bands, bands with diamonds and other stones, bands that combine different metals, and so much more. Gold and platinum are popular choices and are precious metals. They can easily be resized over the years. But on the downside, they can scratch, bend and dent quite easily compared with other metals.

They’re also quite expensive, though buying rings with lower gold content can help with that. Titanium and tungsten are becoming popular choices for men’s wedding bands. Titanium light but very strong so doesn’t dent or bend like precious metals can. It’s more scratch resistant than precious metals but will still scratch over time, and titanium rings can’t be resized. Tungsten is the second hardest material on earth next to diamond - but it is brittle. A pure tungsten ring is virtually scratchproof but would shatter into a thousand pieces if dropped. Carbon can be added to the tungsten to create tungsten carbide to keep the scratchproof qualities and build strength.

A wedding photographer will be by the bride and groom’s sides throughout their special day. It’s crucial to find someone they click with. That chemistry will not only help the day to flow smoothly, but will make for better shots how relaxed and happy or uncomfortable and stressed a couple is will show in the photos. There’s no harm in meeting with multiple photographers in a quest to find the right one. But sussing out their style first will help to narrow the field. Most wedding photographers have website, Instagram and Facebook. Brides and grooms-to-be should look for photos they love, paying attention to the lighting, framing and overall style.

It can also help to check for photos of other couples who look like you. Almost anyone can make a model look good, but capturing the beauty in every person and moment is essential for a wedding. They should also ask their prospective photographer how many hours and locations their package includes, whether they require meals, how many photos they’ll deliver and how long it will be before you have them. Venues can often recommend photographers who are comfortable and familiar with the surrounds, which can make things easier on the day. Another thing to check is their contingency plan for illness or injury. Do they have another photographer who could take their place?

a tune
LIVE band, DJ, playlist or other - music plays a key role in a wedding day. There are the obvious moments during the day that many brides and grooms will have picked songs for well ahead of time. Walking down the aisle, the first dance ... these are moments where song choice is essential. But there are other moments during the day that need a soundtrack. · Allow for about 30 minutes’ of music to play while guests are waiting for the bride to arrive. · The processional. Bridesmaids can walk down the aisle to the same song as the bride, or something different. It needs to be long enough for them to make their whole journey. · The bride can make her entrance her own with a separate song. · Music should play while the bride and groom sign their marriage certificate. · The recessional song plays as the happy

couple makes their way back up the aisle. · Make sure there’s music playing while guests mingle after the nuptials, while the wedding party is away having photos taken. · What song will play as the wedding party enters the reception? · Will the bride and groom enter to a separate song? · The first dance song, for that all important first time on the dance floor as husband and wife. · The father-daughter dance song is usually a tear-jerker. · A mother-son dance could add to the tears. · Will the wedding party have a specific song for their first spin on the dance floor? · No cake-cutting is complete without a song! · Throwing a garter? A WEDDING is the most expensive party most couples will ever throw. It can be hard to set a budget for many reasons - there are surprise costs everywhere, and saying no to that dream-dress (or suit) can be heartbreaking. Couple should decide early which aspects of the day they want to splurge on, and where they can save. If their heart is set on a $5000 gown, perhaps a cocktail reception could cut the food bill; if photos mean the world then a homemade cake could help to fund that top photographer; if they love live music but aren’t interested in a short film documenting their entire day, maybe a family member could film the ceremony to free up some cash for a band.

Choosing a weekday rather than a Saturday can save money and has the bonus of increasing the chances that suppliers will be available - early notice for guests is a must, though! Thinking about which wedding traditions ring true can also help a couple to cut costs. Are there items or activities they’re including only because everybody else does? right gown
FINDING the perfect wedding dress among a sea of gorgeous gowns can be a daunting task. Knowing what suits their shape can help a bride to streamline the process, and avoid the demoralising experience of trying on an unflattering style. The hourglass body type refers to balanced hips and bust and a defined waist. Trumpet, mermaid or fishtail wedding dresses are great to show off curves. The trumpet is fitted from the bust to the mid-thigh and flares out from there. The mermaid is extremely fitted from the

chest to the knee, and flares out at the knees. It’s best to avoid empire styles and ball gowns. Women with a pear body shape have hips wider than their shoulders, a defined waist and slim shoulders. Ball gown dresses suit this shape, as the layered fabrics below the waist balance the body and disguise larger hips. The ball gown has a fitted bodice, flares at the waist with a full skirt. The skirt can be overwhelming on a small frame so isn’t recommended for petite brides.

Empire line dresses highlight the smallest part of your body, which is also good for pears. Trumpet, mermaid or fishtail draw attention to the lower body, so pears should avoid these shapes, and sheath or column dresses emphasise lumps and bumps. A sheath dress follows the natural body shape, from neckline to hem. Triangles have a wider top half, narrow hips and subtle waist. V-neck and scoop neckline dresses can cover up wider shoulders, as can thick straps and sleeves. Puffed sleeves, halter and off-theshoulder necklines draw attention to shoulders. Apples are voluptuous, with a full bust, a tummy and round hips. Empire line dresses take attention off the waist and create a leaner look. The empire features a raised waistline that

sits just under the bust, and the fabric below the bust settles straight to the floor. A-line dresses with a dropped waist also suit this body shape. A-line is one of the best cuts for streamlining silhouettes, helping a bride to appear taller and slimmer. These dresses flare out from the hips and gradually widen towards the hem. Apples should avoid sheath or column wedding dresses. Athletic or slim shape is straight up and down with an undefined waist. Simple sheath or column wedding dresses are perfect, and fitted gowns with high necklines. These brides should avoid portrait, off-theshoulder or halter necklines if their collarbone stands out.
