Jockeys set to wear pink Launching the two-day TAB Cranbourne Cup Carnival will be the fifth running of the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate on Friday, 12 October.

The club was delighted with the boost in prize money for the race this year, up from $80,000 to $100,000.

"The Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate is a feature race on the club's calendar and named in honour of the locally trained Greg Eurell Cox Plate winning mare. We are thrilled that Racing Victoria has recognised the status of this race as a key lead-in race into the premier fillies and mares races in the Spring Racing Carnival," said Cran-

bourne Turf Club CEO Neil Bainbridge.

The Club also holds a ladies function on the prestigious race night, hosted by Hawthorn legend, Brownlow Medallist and media identity Shane Crawford in support of the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA).

The event sees ladies from far and wide come to Cranbourne to enjoy a fun-filled night with friends and family at the races, all for a worthy cause.

Mr Bainbridge said the Cranbourne Turf Club was excited to announce that, in support of Breast Cancer Network Australia, all jockeys

in the 2018 Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate will be wearing pink breeches.

"We believe this will showcase to the Victorian Racing Industry our commitment to supporting such a worthy cause, and will also enhance breast cancer awareness amongst both the local and broader communities," he said.

As part of this initiative, one pair of pink

breeches will be signed by all jockeys and will then be auctioned via eBay, with all proceeds of the winning bid being donated to BCNA. Furthermore, by wearing pink on the night of the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate, patrons will receive free entry if they simply donate a gold coin upon entering the racecourse. Again, all proceeds will be donated to BCNA.

The Cranbourne Turf Club has committed to supporting the Breast Cancer Network Australia.

All happening at the Cup The Cranbourne Turf Club is gearing up to host one of the biggest sporting and social events on the local calendar and is encouraging the whole community to take part in the celebrations.

The TAB Cranbourne Cup carnival will begin with the Inglis Pinker Pinker Plate on Friday, 12 October, followed by the TAB Cranbourne Cup on Sunday, 14 October.

This year, Cranbourne Cup day promises to be another action-packed day, headlined by the feature $350,000 Cranbourne Cup and the $100,000 Procon Developments Apache Cat Classic.

This year's Cup will see the unveiling of its first ever young members' enclosure, giving those aged 18 to 39 the opportunity to enjoy all the racing action in a marquee located in prime position.

Children discovered the natural wonders of the world with free pop-up activities at Cranbourne Botanic Gardens these school holidays.

Hundreds of families took part in the Kids' Backyard event where children got imaginative and hands-on with sensory activities including weaving, clay constructions and storytelling on Thursday 27 September.

Johnathon, 8, from Pakenham was all smiles when he wore an Akubra hat he had made from clay.

"The pop-up activities in the kids' backyard was really successful; we couldn't have asked for a better turnout," Early Childhood Program Facilitator Janine Richardson said.

"Parents and grandparents kept asking if they could return throughout the holidays, which is great feedback for next time," she said.

"Many families decided to stay in the Kids' Backyard for picnics and play, an inviting place for parents and grandparents and children could interact."

Bowser blues Motorists have been left reeling after facing the brunt of sky-rocketing petrol prices across Casey, which hit a four-year high last week, stretching the household budgets of families.

Increased oil price has affected the wholesale price of refined petrol which has had a flow-on effect at the pump, according to RACV vehicle engineering manager Michael Case.

"Fuel is essential; an increase hurts family budgets and contributes to the cost of living.

It's up the industry to justify current pricing," he said.

According to petrolspy.com, United service station on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne had unleaded fuel at 165.7c a litre on Friday 27 September, while Shell on the

Western Port Highway in Lynbrook was 167.9c, and BP on Berwick-Clyde Road, Berwick also at 167.9c.

Drivers filling up at Coles Express on Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Clyde North were stung an extra 10 cents a litre for unleaded fuel (167.9c), compared to Coles Express on Sladen Street, Cranbourne (157.9c), which is less than seven kilometres away.

Cranbourne resident and builder Ash Banks said he was considering selling his car due to the price spike, who currently travels to Burnside and Doreen for work.

"It ends up costing a $135-$140 a tank, it's an absolute rip-off," he said.

He said he filled up his sports Ford ute with premium fuel at the 7-Eleven on Evan Road in

Cranbourne on Friday 27 September at 1.83c a litre.

"It's been steadily going up, it hasn't come back down," Mr Banks said.

"I'm spending close to $200 a week in fuel.

The price of living is ridiculous at the moment.

You start living to work not working to live."

CommSec senior economist Ryan Felsman said there was little relief from the petrol pain.

"CommSec estimates that monthly household spending on petrol, assuming the purchase of 40 litres of petrol per week, is at fourmonth highs of $244.48," he said.

Fuel prices in Melbourne last week hit 167.9 cents a litre and averaged a four-year high, just as the school holidays began.

MotorMouth, unleaded petrol prices were $1.55-$1.60 a litre in most suburbs.

"The major factors driving higher prices were an increase in international crude oil and refined petrol prices, and a lower AUD-USD exchange rate," ACCC Chair Rod Sims said in a media statement last month.

"A weaker Aussie dollar has also increased costs for wholesalers buying petrol for the Australian market, which flows through to consumers who pay for this at the pump," Mr Sims said.

According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, the national average Australian price of unleaded petrol rose by 0.6 cents to a fourmonth high of 152.8 cents a litre. Prices were up 21.7 per cent over the year to 23 September.

New power in waste City of Casey will be the first municipality in the state to put new electric powered hard waste collection trucks into service.

Waste Management Services (WM) showcased their first electric truck for residential hard rubbish waste collections on Wednesday 3 October, which will officially start in Casey streets this month.

Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D'Ambrosio attended the launch of the product at the Waste Expo Australia, as part of Sustainability Week.

WM managing director Mark Jeffs said the new trucks were further evidence of the company's continued shift towards innovation and support for renewable energy.

"I am very pleased to bring electric trucks to the streets of Melbourne and I congratulate the City of Casey on this significant commitment. Collecting rubbish this way will help to make the environment more sustainable for future generations with this unique electric vehicle technology," he said.

"These vehicles are better for the rate payer, quieter than diesel or petrol vehicles, lower maintenance than normal trucks and last longer."

WM is looking at rolling out more electric trucks in their fleet in other municipalities around Melbourne after this month.

The trucks have been designed by Superior Pak, Australia's leading manufacturer of waste collection equipment, in collaboration with Australian automotive technology

The Victorian Greens have unveiled plan to extend the Cranbourne rail line to Clyde as well as duplicating the Cranbourne line, if they win the State Election in November.

The $1 billion project would also see a new station built at Cranbourne East - with all works expected to be completed by 2025.

This would form part of the Greens' $5 billion Melbourne Metro transport plan.

Greens southeast MP Nina Springle joined Greens transport spokesman Sam Hibbins in making the announcement at Cranbourne Railway Staion on Wednesday 3 October.

"The South East is expanding rapidly and we need this investment in public transport now to support a growing population," Ms Springle said.

"Extending the Cranbourne line to Clyde

Cranbourne Lawn Bowls, Cranbourne Fire Brigade, Cranbourne Public Hall and the Sikh Volunteers Australia Casey Food Van, have all secured vital funding through the State Government's Pick My Project initiative.

The ground-breaking program provided locals the power to choose the projects their community needs.

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced the successful organisations on Thursday 2 October who will share in Labor's $30 million project which included: Cranbourne Lawn Bowls - $60581.00, for an Outdoor Area Project Cranbourne Fire Brigade - $50000 for a Community Safety and Education Project Cranbourne Public Hall - $36498 for a Solar Energy Project Sikh Volunteers Australia - $50081 to provide a free food van in the City of Casey Through the 30 million Pick My Project initiative, Victorian residents aged 16 and over were given the opportunity to submit their idea for a project or program that made their community a better place to live.

People were then given the chance to vote for their favourite project. More than 95,000 Victorians cast votes, with successful projects receiving grants of between $20,000 and $200,000.

To ensure a range of small and large communities had the opportunity to be part of Pick My Project, no more than 50 per cent of a partnership areas funding was awarded to one local government area.

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said he was pleased these much needed projects will get the funding and support it needs thanks to the ground-breaking initiative.

"Pick My Project will make a real difference in our local area and communities across the state - giving locals the power to choose the projects their community needs," he said.

This move towards electric vehicles is part of WM's shift towards further sustainability commitments and limiting their carbon foot-

Clyde rail build pledge

Ms Springle added the community had seen "big promises" made by the Andrews Government, yet "we are still waiting to hear about how they plan to invest in decent and reliable public transport in the south-east."

"Cranbourne East was the fastest growing suburb in the country last year, yet the only real option for getting around is by car."

Appeal for witnesses after carjack attack

By Brendan Rees Police are calling for witnesses following an attempted carjacking in Cranbourne North last month.

Detective Senior Constable Andrew Walker of the Casey Crime Investigation Unit said

a man of African appearance allegedly approached a 29-year-old man while he was sitting in his parked car in Herring Avenue on Tuesday 25 September about 8pm.

He said the victim was punched multiple times to the head after the man tried to grab the keys through an opened window.

The victim managed to drive away.

The man is described as being in his early twenties with a slim build and wearing a black hoodie and cap.

$12.64m in losses

By Brendan Rees Casey punters frittered away millions of dollars in pokies machines during August - continuing a "disturbing trend," according to Australia's gaming watchdog.

The latest figures from the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation revealed City of Casey ranked second worst council for gambling losses for the month of August, behind Brimbank.

Losses jumped from $11.46 million in August 2017 to a record $12.64 million - with coins being fed into 913 gaming machines at 13 venues in August, a gain of 10.3 per cent.

Gamblers in neighbouring Shire of Cardinia lost $2.83 million in 325 pokies machines at five venues while gaming machines in the City of Greater Dandenong gobbled up $10.96 million.

The Alliance for Gambling Reform director and spokesman Tim Costello said losses in Casey could top $140 million by 2019 if the

current trend continued.

"It would be great to have Casey on board (the alliance) campaigning harder to reduce gambling harm in the community, including by pressuring both major political parties to promise serious reform as part of their re-election platforms," he said.

Casey council acting manager for city planning Kathryn Seirlis said council had been advocating for the State Government to extend a cap on the number of Electronic Gaming Machines (EGM) for the whole municipality.

"A city-wide cap would provide certainty to the remaining parts of Casey to keep the EGM density consistent across the municipality," she said.

Casey Council deputy mayor Wayne Smith said if council were to join the alliance they would have a "greater impact" in reducing gambling harm in the community.

"We'll never get rid of them (pokies) but we can try and restrict them in terms of getting more of them," he said.

Bad Bets Australia spokesman Rowan Wenn urged Casey Council to "stand up" to the gambling industry and "protect the ratepayers."

"People who run the industry target places like Casey; they look at people who are under mortgage stress, who are looking for an escape, and who are prone to the addictive nature of the machine," he said.

"Poker machine revenue is just a tax on the addicted and that is not OK. "The alliance is absolutely the best place for councils to pour their resources into and try and work with this issue," Mr Wenn said.

Cranbourne Information and Support Services executive officer Leanne Petrides said: "Some people tell us that they are lonely, and feel that the pokie venues allow them some social interaction, even though they may then find they lose the money they had allocated to purchase food that week.

The Igoe family feel blessed to have three beautiful children however there's just one thing missing in their lives - a grandparent.

Sam and hubby Nathan Igoe say their kids' grandparents aren't actively present in their lives.

"Just knowing they're around but choose not to take part or visit them is really sad and upsetting," Sam says.

The Hampton Park couple are now looking to adopt a grandparent for their three girls, Charlotte, 3, and one-and-half-year-old twins Sophie and Bella.

Sam says knowing their kids' lives - and their own, for that matter was missing a "special relationship" with a grandparent was "really tough."

"I know that if my dad was still alive he would have been such a loving grandpa."

Sam says she did some Googling and stumbled across a website called 'Find a Grandparent.'

Find a Grandparent is a not-for-profit service for finding surrogate, volunteer grandparents. Once a family finds a suitable surrogate grandparent by conducting a profile search on the website, the family can then arrange to meet.

Sam and Nathan signed up to the program two months ago but "sadly we haven't found any matches with grandparents."

"We're open to either a couple like a grandma and grandpa or if it's just a single person as well, we don't mind so long as they're in it for the right reasons," Sam said.

"It's benefiting every one; I just really like that idea."

Sam says her family loves day trips to the Melbourne Zoo and would love for their adopted grandparent to accompany them as well

Jailed for destructive home assault

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drunken man, angry that his partner's father didn't pick up duty-free cigarettes from an overseas trip, has repeatedly bashed his partner and trashed her house during a violent rage, a court has heard.

As the man's abusive rant flared on 21 August, the partner called her parents and tried to pack clothes to take her and her daughter to stay at her mother's place.

She was punched several times, including in the face.

After the initial assault, she confronted him about "hitting a woman", Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

He raised his fists threateningly. She grabbed his testicles but was overpowered by his choking hold.

The man kicked her in the stomach.

As she got up crying, he threw a clothes basket across the room, hurled two clothes horses over her head and flipped over the kitchen table.

When the partner's parents arrived, the man abused the mother and punched the father in the face.

The partner tried to intervene by punching the man to the head. He bit into her left thigh.

Police arrested the man at the house. He was taken to Narre Warren police station and then Casey Hospital to have his injuries assessed.

The man faced Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 October on multiple charges of assault as well as breaching a limited familyviolence intervention order at the time.

His defence lawyer told the court his 39 days in remand- his first time in custody - had been an "eye-opener".

"It's not a place he's ever going to go back to."

Police sought a further jail term given he had several times been previously convicted of assaulting the same victim.

"His behaviour is clearly escalating," police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Luke McDonald said.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted the man had "not got far" on his current community corrections order, including turning up to appointments while drunk.

"You concede yourself you're causing a great deal of harm to your partner over a great period of time."

She jailed the man for two months, including time already served in remand.

When released, the man was ordered to restart his CCO with judicial monitoring, alcohol treatment and violent-offending programs.

He was served with a full family-violence intervention order protecting his partner.

What is something people don't know about you?

I have a passion for sports which bring joy, but are also physically challenging, like caving, deep sea scuba diving, extreme horse-riding and running marathons.

What was your most memorable moment?

When I first sought funds to establish Insight, nine years ago, I shared my dream in front of organisations and was thrilled to receive favourable responses from people willing to fund a school for the blind.

What's the best thing about working with children with a disability?

Receiving sincere thanks from blind children and their families because of the growth they experience through the broad scope of education and life skills our school offers. It's so rewarding to know we can make a difference.

Do not go back to the same area after being swooped. It turns out that magpies are very intelligent and have good memory, so they are more likely to target the same people.

Ensure that you are continuously watching them. They are more likely to swoop from behind but if they feel like they are being watched, you will be less of a target. Try drawing eyes on either the back of a hat or helmet to give the illusion.

Magpies are irritated by bikes and it could potentially result in you falling off. So calmly walk your bike out of the area. Another option is to attach sticks to your helmet so that the magpies can't get close to your head.

'Affable' road-rage basher

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Cranbourne man has completed anger therapy after a "shameful" bashing of another driver at a Lyndhurst service station, a court has heard.

Nick Kouloktsis, 42, claimed his road-rage was provoked by the other man driving aggressively and cutting him off on Western Port Highway on 6 March.

He pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 October to recklessly causing injury.

At the Coles Express servo, the pair got out of their cars and the victim tried to explain himself, according to police.

Kouloktsis hit the other driver in the face, before the pair scuffled on the ground.

At one point, Kouloktsis stood up and kicked the prone victim in the kidney region.

The victim tried to shield himself from fur-

ther attack and didn't retalitate, police told the court.

He later visited a medical clinic, nursing bruised ribs, arms and legs, as well as cuts to his face and four loosened teeth.

Kouloktsis's lawyer told the court that the victim's injuries "healed quite readily".

He said the victim had been driving in an "aggressive" manner, trying to overtake the "normally affable" Kouloktsis.

The victim pulled alongside Koulktsis on the highway, "gesticulating" and "clenching a fist". He then "cut him off and almost caused an accident", the lawyer said.

"Mr Kouloktsis then reacted in a way that was entirely inappropriate," the lawyer conceded.

"It would have been best to take a registration number and contact police.

"He is normally affable ... his problem is when the fuse is lit."

Since the assault, Kouloktsis had complet-

ed group anger therapy, and was being counselled by a psychologist.

The factory floor manager found the ongoing counselling was "of benefit", the court heard.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer said she considered jailing Kouloktsis for the "shameful act", particularly attacking a person on the ground.

"There was some lead-up to this, but it was only words, gestures, actions on the road.

"You have two choices: let it go or let the police deal with it."

Ms Spencer said assault victims don't just suffer physical injury but mental scarring as well.

"I'm a bit concerned there's a history of violent offending, albeit 11 years ago."

Kouloktsis was convicted and sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid work as part of a 12-month community corrections order

Heritage-listed old school house gets new lease on life The City of Casey has breathed new life into the heritage-listed, original Hampton Park Primary School building by turning it into a great community workspace for the Hampton Park Men's Shed.

The building was facing demolition in 2016 as part of the Department of Education and Training's (DET) redevelopment of Hampton Park Primary School to modernise the school buildings.

Following a passionate community campaign to save the building, which was supported by the City of Casey, council accepted a proposal by the School and DET for the building to be gifted to the City of Casey and relocated onto Council land in Marjorie Eastick Reserve,

Hampton Park.

Following the relocation, Council invested $350,000 in refurbishing and extending the building to transform it into a community facility, now known as the Hampton Park Primary School Community Workspace, which is

currently being leased by the Hampton Park Men's Shed.

City of Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Wayne Smith BJ JP officially opened the rejuvenated facility on Saturday 22 September amongst members of the Hampton Park community including the daughter of the original builder.

"The building was constructed in 1922 and was one of the few buildings left in the suburb that survived the early development of Hampton Park," Cr Smith said.

"Having served the local community for more than 90 years, Council is thrilled to have been able to ensure the building remained a valuable community asset and give it a new

lease on life."

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council was proud to reach a great outcome for the community.

"The school and wider community were passionate about saving this building, and Council is proud that we were able to assist and ensure it remained in Hampton Park," Cr Ablett said.

"Currently home to the Hampton Park Men's Shed, this facility will provide a positive and supportive environment for men to meet and work on projects and provide opportunities to support men's health, wellbeing and social interaction."

TV win gives best view in the house

By Rowan Forster Liz Paice was lacking so much confidence when she entered the Star News Group and Harvey Norman Grand Final TV competition that she prematurely purchased a brand new flat-screen last week.

Now the Berwick mum and her kids, Taylah, Josh, will have two screens to watch the latest nail-biting AFL action.

Mrs Paice received a call from Harvey Norman on Tuesday morning, informing her she had won a 65 inch Ultra High Definition TV. It is one of the few things Mrs Paice has ever won in her life.

“We’ve just gone out and bought a new TV two weeks ago because we never thought we would win,” she said.

“The kids were absolutely stoked.

“I thought to myself, ‘oh my god what are we going to do’, but then we got the idea to mount the new TV on the wall.”

All the family had to do was snap a selfie in front of their tiny TV, donning their team’s colours.

Now, they will have a state-of-the-art television delivered to their home.

Unfortunately, Mrs Paice and her kids aren’t overly keen on the Pies or the Eagles.

The family is split in their loyalties between the Bulldogs, Cats and Swans.

Harvey Norman Fountain Gate proprietor Grant Hammond said it was extremely fulfilling to host the competition.

Traffic jam ‘nightmare’

By Brendan Rees A notorious road in Cranbourne West has Casey Council appealing to the State Government for an urgent upgrade.

At their 4 September meeting councillors voted to advocate for the State Government and Opposition to duplicate Hall Road as well as upgrade the intersections of Hall Road/Evans Road and Hall Road/CranbourneFrankston Road.

Councillor Sam Aziz said fixing Hall Road was an "absolute priority to ensure the safety of our community."

However, VicRoads manager movement and safety in the Metro South East, Sasha Yarwood said "We've inspected the intersection at Hall Road and Evans Road and are considering whether an upgrade is needed."

"We'll continue to monitor the intersection to ensure it is safe for all drivers, cyclists and pedestrians," he said.

In a statement, VicRoads says it regularly reviewed requests from the community to consider safety improvements on the roads.

The Save Cranbourne West Residents Group (SCWRG) sought the help of consultants from Traffix Group in providing a report of crash data on Hall Road - which was submitted to council in August.

SCWRG president Ray Walker said Hall Road was a "nightmare" and just "getting out of hand."

It is dangerous (on Hall Road), particularly the Evans Road intersection," he said.

"There have been nine serious accidents on Hall Road/ Evans Road this year which is over one a month - that qualifies as a black spot."

"We looking to put some signs up on Hall Road - to fix Hall Road," Mr Walker said.

Councillors also voted for developers to build signalised T-intersections for the Lochaven Estate (north of Hall Road) and Elysian Estate (south of Hall Road) in accordance with their subdivision permits.

Funding boost kicks goals

By Brendan Rees More than $1 million will be spent overhauling the facilities at Casey Fields on Oval 2, if the Liberals win the November State Election.

The $1.5 million cash injection would see the Cranbourne Senior Football and Netball Club facilities upgraded including asphalting the carpark and installing a new perimeter fence.

In a major boost for female participation in sport, the new upgrade will add additional female change room facilities and shelter at the netball courts.

Improved lighting around the ground will mean teams can train outside after-hours and a new grandstand pavilion will add more comfortable and enjoyable experience for spectators.

Liberal candidate for Cranbourne Ann Marie Hermans joined members of club and the Shadow Minister for Sport Danny O'Brien on

Thursday 27 September in making the announcement at the Cranbourne Turf Club.

Ms Hermans said the funding would enable the club to host events and activities in view of all the on-field action.

"I'm passionate about local sport and the benefits it brings to our young people and our community at large. This funding boost will mean so much to the teams that play on Oval 2 at Casey Fields."

Mr O'Brien said: "Victorians love their footy, but there's nothing fair about Dan's deal with the AFL when the facilities here at Casey Fields are inadequate for large clubs."

"Unlike Daniel Andrews who has decided to give the AFL a massive $225 million free kick to upgrade facilities at Etihad Stadium, the Liberal Nationals are getting behind our local sporting clubs," he said.

Cranbourne president Gerry Kelly warmly welcomed the announcement, saying the club was "desperate."

However, a report before councillors says the developers of these estates have not been able to "reach agreement to share the cost of delivering the complete signalised cross-intersection."

Cr Aziz said "I just want to see them (estate developers) and the State Government to cooperate to actually deliver the intersections so we're not risking fatalities."

Cranbourne West resident Heather Clayton says she often faced a wall of traffic on Hall Road with her commute to work in Wantirna.

She says once the Brompton Life Estate development in Cranbourne South was finished,

"I know it's only going to get worse."

"Give it two years and you're not going to be able to move around Hall Road."

Ms Clayton says there was one morning she left home at 7.10am, only to come to a standstill at the Thompsons Road intersection on Hall Road at 7.45am.

"I want to leave Wantirna right on five o'clock and beat most of what I can," Ms Clayton said.

She says it takes about 10-15 minutes from Lyndhurst to Hall Road. "That's on a good night."

The Liberals have promised to give the Cranbourne Senior Football and Netball Club facilities a makeover if elected.

"We've got so many teams playing. We need proper change rooms in place," he said.

"We want to make it an all-inclusive club but we can't do that at the moment because there's no facilities. It's not that old it's just not designed for senior football."

A Government spokesperson said the State

Government had provided $6.5 million to Cranbourne clubs since 2014, including a $5 million investment in facilities for women's footy at Casey Fields.

He said sporting club grants that have kicked in $116,968 for new uniforms, coach and umpire development in Cranbourne.

Junior footy's $1m pledge

By Brendan Rees A $1 million re-development of the clubrooms and lighting at J&P Cam Reserve in Cranbourne would take place, if the Liberals are elected in the November State Election.

Liberal Candidate for Cranbourne AnnMarie Hermans joined Member for Gembrook Brad Battin and members of the Cranbourne Junior Football Club at Amberlee Receptions in Cranbourne on Friday September 14 in making the announcement.

Ms Hermans said Cranbourne's Junior Football Club was in desperate need of new facilities.

"With the football club recently expanding to include junior clubs, the current facilities are no longer fit to cater for the demand in growth and female participation in sports," she said.

The funding would ensure the club rooms were finished, an electronic scoreboard installed, and adequate lighting placed around the ground to allow players to practice at night.

"Spectators will also benefit from the upgrades with an extension to the carpark and providing shelter over the existing seating," she said.

"The community have given an enormous amount of time to achieve this outcome, and I am thrilled that they have been rewarded with

this funding commitment."

Club president Jason Disher said the funding would rejuvenate the club.

"It's an old building, I dare say it's been there for 30 years or so and we've outgrown it massively," he said.

He said the club was looking at expanding its 17 football sides to 18 next year and current change rooms were too small.

"You can get a team in there and then all the parents are standing outside out in the rain.

"We're there for the kids to get them out doing something physical and having a comfortable area for them to come to," he said.

A Government spokesperson said since 2014 the State Government had provided $6.5 million to Cranbourne clubs.

"From our $5 million investment in facilities for women's footy at Casey Fields to our Sporting Club grants that have kicked in $116,968 for new uniforms, coach and umpire development, we're delivering for local sports clubs and communities," he said.

Shadow Minister for Sport Danny O'Brien said the Liberals were proud to make local sport their priority, "not funding Etihad Stadium like the Andrews government."

"J&P Cam Reserve is a major focal point for the Cranbourne community so it's about time it was upgraded," he said.

A smart bus connection

A $500 million bus network that will see a huge investment in bus links in the south-east would be in place by the end of 2019 - if the Greens win the State Election in November.

The plan, announced on Tuesday 25 September, included upgrading some of the

south-east's busiest bus routes to SmartBus which will increase some priority routes to 10 minutes frequencies, longer hours of operation, real-time information at bus stops, with direct routes and electric buses.

The Greens will also instigate a metropolitan wide bus review to provide more frequent and direct services and expand coverage to public transport dead zones.

Victorian Greens MP for the South-Eastern Metropolitan region, Nina Springle said "big promises" had been made by the Andrews Government recently that will "take 20 or more years to take effect."

"It is absolutely imperative that we properly invest in a decent and reliable bus network so that cars are not the one and only option for getting around," she said.

"Estimates suggest SmartBus services remove several thousand vehicles from Melbourne's roads every day; as they are a fast and frequent alternative to car use."

The priority routes in South-Eastern Metropolitan are: Route 708: Carrum to Hampton via Southland Shopping Centre.

Route 788: Frankston to Portsea via Dromana, Rosebud, Sorrento.

Combine routes 791 and 841: Frankston, Cranbourne, Narre Warren.

Route 824: Moorabbin to Keysborough via Clayton, Westall.

Route 828: Hampton to Berwick Station via Southland Shopping Centre, Dandenong.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said the Greens announcement was "just more hot air from the do nothing Greens political party - you can't trust them to deliver anything."

"We've added new bus routes, improved connections and updated timetables on almost 70 services across the south east," she said.

Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said the Greens' aim of more direct, frequent Smartbus services will "get more people using public transport, which brings huge benefits to our suburbs."

FOCUS ON ... SENIORS WEEK

Free travel for seniors Victorian Seniors Card holders are encouraged to explore Melbourne and regional Victoria with free travel from 7 to 14 October, as part of the 36th Victorian Seniors Festival.

Minister for Housing, Disability and Ageing Martin Foley said the free public transport will help people get to as many of the festival activities as possible.

The free travel applies to Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses and regional V/Line trains, coaches and buses.

Seniors need to carry their Seniors myki and Victorian Seniors Card with them, and touch on and off as usual - but will not be not be charged during the eight days of free public transport.

The annual festival provides opportunities for seniors and their families to participate in new activities, with more than 140,000 older Victorians expected to take part in more than 2,500 events across the state.

The theme for this year is “get social’ - with seniors encouraged to take part in fun-filled activities such as learning how to take better photos, making the perfect brew, trying the ukulele and having antiques appraised at an Antique roadshow.

Events will include a big band dance, an LGBTI Elders dance club, at Israeli circle dancing, a bush dancing festival, Ballet for Seniors and a range of musical performances and concerts.

In regional and rural Victoria, seniors can watch a classic Aussie film outdoors at the Quambatook silo cinema, take in some arm chair travel in Echuca, and descend 61 metres underground at Central Deborah gold mine.

The 2018 Victorian Senior of the Year Awards will also be announced during the festival, at a ceremony at Government House on Tuesday 9 October. The awards recognise the

Makeover for family centre

Police hope to identify this man.

Parcel thief on the run Cranbourne police are investigating the theft of two parcels from a residential premises in Clyde North last month.

It is believed the parcels, which were left at the front door of an address on Blacksmith Way, were taken by an unknown man about 2pm on Friday 14 September.

Investigators have released an image of a man

who may be able to assist with their enquiries.

Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time who may have noticed any suspicious behaviour to come forward.

Works have started on a million dollar redevelopment of the Marriott Waters Family and Community Centre in Lyndhurst.

Cranbourne MP Jude Perera joined City of Casey Mayor Cr Ablett and Casey Councillors in announcing the start of construction on Thursday 26 September.

The $1.18 million redevelopment will include a new community room multipurpose space with community kitchen, large indoor/ outdoor storage space, family change room and an undercover outdoor courtyard.

The project received $590,000 from the 2017-18 round of the Andrews Government's Growing Suburbs Fund, which supports the creation of community connections, enhanced services, and provides greater opportunities at the local level.

Mr Perera said the redevelopment project will see the centre expand and continue to thrive as a neighbourhood activity centre that unites the community.

"It's great to see the Victorian Government's Growing Suburbs Fund delivering projects like the Marriott Waters Family and Community Centre redevelopment, providing vital services to growing communities," he said.

"Labors Growing Suburbs Fund supports the creation of community connections, enhanced services, and provides greater opportunities at the local level. It also helps communities thrive and adapt to change."

The project will be delivered by the City of Casey, which has contributed $595,000 towards the project.

The Growing Suburbs Fund has invested more than $5 million into the City of Casey for 13 projects.

Evans Road unlocked The dead-end Evans Road in Lynbrook will reopen as part of an upgrade of Hallam Road.

Works for a new traffic-signalised intersection at South Gippsland Highway and Hallam Road have begun, enabling Evans Road to be re-connected to the highway.

The new access point to Evans Road will reconnect locked-in neighbourhoods in Lynbrook and Lyndhurst.

A 1.2-kilometre section of Hallam Road between Ormond Road and the highway will be widened.

Traffic lights, with a turning lane, will be installed at the SUEZ Hampton Park Resource and Recovery Centre for the large number of trucks arriving and leaving the site.

Roads and Road Safety Minister Luke Donnellan said the project had been "talked about long enough".

"Drivers know just how frustrating it is to be stuck in traffic on Hallam Road or waiting to turn at South Gippsland Highway - that's why we're adding lanes and upgrading key intersections to get traffic moving."

The Hallam Road-South Gippsland Highway intersection is used by more than 40,000 vehicles a day, with more than 10,000 on Hallam Road.

The first stage of works will relocate a section of gas pipeline beside Hallam Road, with the project due for completion by the Major Road Projects Authority in early 2020.

Great day out at the Gippsland Garden and Home Expo The Gippsland Garden and Home Expo, which is run by the Drouin Lions Club, is now the second largest of its kind in Victoria and is a fabulous asset to Gippsland.

Lean and clean message Through her business Paleo to Go, Berwick’s Aarti Royan is striving to make clean, nutritious process-free whole foods easily accessible.

Her mission comes following her past life as an ‘overweight, terribly lethargic desk junkie’ who climbed stairs like she was ‘climbing Everest.’

But that was years ago now. Today, Aarti ‘can’t even relate’ to the highly stressed and borderline majorly depressed person she once was.

And she says it’s all thanks to her quest to live a ‘clean lifestyle.’

It started almost ten years ago when a colleague introduced her to the Whole30 program. Put simply, the Whole30 program is designed to change the way participants eat, think and feel in 30 days. Partakers cook their own meals where all inflammatory foods and beverages are removed. They eat three clean meals a day which are made with Whole30 approved ingredients (meats, seafood, veggies, and eggs).

Admitting she had tried every diet under the sun, Aarti warmed to the program and confessed it improved her mental wellbeing substantially. She could ‘find no traces of her depression’ and even signed up to do the 100 kilometre Oxfam marathon.

She finished the program having lost the final desired kilos and had gained a new mindset.

But where to now?

“Not long after (I finished the program) we went to Cape Bridgewater for a holiday and I was thinking ‘wow, it’s a six-hour drive.’ Usually, you would stop at McDonald’s and I was saying to my husband, this is really frustrating because I can’t get something to eat if I don’t pack anything. I have to be so organised,” Aarti said.

“So that’s when I decided that I was going to start something. I had this vision that you’ve

got to have clean food wherever you go, even if it’s just a little tub of something that’s process, grain and dairy free - something that people like me can eat no matter where they are. We have so many kiosks for unhealthy foods, why can’t there be something for clean food?”

For Aarti, Paleo to Go was ‘the logical progression from the Whole30 Program’ and she now has three heavily researched, ready-to-go paleo products available to via her website.

Her ‘Cleanola’ (a ‘clean’ take on granola) has been a standout, while her Mocha Hemp Balls and Turmeric Latte Blend have also proved to be crowd favourites.

“The long-term vision is that I really want to have a lot of products but I’m really in the (developing stage) at moment,” Aarti said.

“I’m doing a lot of research and I’m trying to get the products out there. But because it’s all process free, it’s very logistically difficult because I’m not adding a lot to the product so they have a shorter shelf life.”

Adding to Aarti’s workload is her full-time job, training to become Australia’s first certified Whole30 coach and the upcoming release of her book, Paleo, The Indian Way. “The book is launching very soon - I’m so excited,” Aarti said.

“I’ve got 50 paleo Indian recipes within the book but it’s not just about being paleo - (the recipes) are also all Whole30 compliant.

Comrey Edgeworth - Within a month of the season starting last year, Edgeworth had already racked up three second XI centuries, and eventually cracked in to have an impact at first XI level and making a half century. Peter Cassidy - It was a genuine break out year for the medium pacer, who took 34 wickets and showed he is the craftiness to make it at the level. Will have more responsibility this season, but the premiership player has a big future.

In what could a massive boost for the Panthers, Australian quick James Pattinson could be seen in the early rounds, but only as a batsman, while the list is healthy and raring to go. Come Round 1 against Ringwood on Saturday, it is possible that 20 players will be jostling for just 11 spots in the side, an incredible headache for the selectors to work out. Skipper Tom Donnell will go around again and once again open up with his long-time partner in crime Brett Forsyth, and his leadership and calmness around his group is first class. A couple of handy depth players have left for further opportunity or to return to local level, but Berwick quick James Wilcock is a star and will be thereabouts to crack straight into the side, while a number of young players will push their case and keep the senior players on their toes. The success of 2017/18 wasn't because of one individual, it was a collective team effort based on support and connection between all the great grades. Coach Nick Speak is highly credentialed and has brought about an enormous amount of professionalism to the group. If the Panthers can withhold the fact they will be the hunted after claiming both pieces of silverware last year and start the season off brightly, they have every chance to once again be the team to beat.

Nathan Lambden - A towering quick with immense passion for his side, Lambden could

be set for a big season after a brilliant pre-season. Was solid last year, but will look to take his game to the next level and break back in the Victorian second XI. The addition of highly esteemed coach Nick Jewell - who has been lauded for his work with FrankstonPeninsula - will give the Swans a newfound edge to their game and is sure to improve their standards both on and off-field. While the majority of the core group remains down at Casey Fields, the loss of the highly talented Brendan Rose will certainly hurt, but the addition of quality quick Josh Dowling, as well as Dandenong youngster Ryan Quirk - who claimed the Premier Seconds player of the year award last season - will see them with an exciting amount of depth. Last season, the club ranked 16th in the competition for total runs scored, a statistic they will need to majorly improve on. The likes of Dev Pollock, vice-captain Lachlan Sperling, Ryan Eaton, Jordan Wyatt and Chris Benedek all proved that they have what it takes, and if they can start converting their 20s to 50s, and their 50s to 100s, it will make them a formidable batting line-up capable of putting a big score on the board. Adding to the addition of Quirk, who is a class young opener, as well as the sturdy Michael Wallace and overseas gun Luke Wells - who is expected to arrive in Round 2 or 3 - and the Swans have a strong nucleus that can help support the bowlers.

Cranny ladies win first-up The Cranbourne Bowls ladies were at their best with a great first-up win against last year's Premier League runner-up, Clayton.

It was a tough game playing at Clayton against the star ladies champions but the Cranbourne outfit wasn't intimidated. With the pre-season training and tactics kicking in automatically, the ladies just kept getting better and better as the game went on and won by 11 shots at the end of the day.

Skip Lynne Wood and her crew of Cheryl Wright, Joyce Pearce and Joy McLisky were

simply outstanding - winning by 12 shots. This is the first time Club Champion Lynne Wood has stepped up to take on the task of skip at this level and she was in brilliant form.

Experienced skip Isobel Partington and her crew were steady all day and got up by one shot while skip Yvonne Van Der Wees and her crew probably played against the toughest opponents but stayed in reach by only losing by two shots on the last end.

Cranbourne Ladies 59 (14 points) defeated Clayton 48 (2 points).

Midweek bowls also began this week with some great results going Cranbourne's way.

Cranbourne 2 Division 2 Open 55 (2 points) was defeated by Pakenham 59 (14 points).

Cranbourne 3 Division 3 Open 74 (16 points) defeated Berwick 43 (0 points).

Cranbourne 4 Six-a-Side Open 49 (14 points) defeated Keysborough (0 points).

Saturday Pennant starts this week with Cranbourne looking forward to a great season ahead, beginning with a coaching and pie

night on Thursday.

The head selector this year is Doug Boggie and he is particularly pleased with the preseason efforts of his team mates.

"We need to improve on last year to push us towards our goal of getting back into first Division. So far the signs are looking good, we have recruited well and we have a tough decision picking our top 16 players each week, which is a good position to be in. All In all I have high expectations this year with making finals a must," he said.

Midweek pennant bowls started for Narre Warren this week, with mixed success. The Division 2 outfit was at home to Hampton Park and had a six-shot loss. The rink of Eric Sydenham, Wally Finlayson, Peter Hayden and Zak Storm was the only winning rink (26-21) while Geoff Ampt, Wilma Haringsma, Iain Stevenson and Jim Millar only just went down 13-15. Reg Young, Philip Howard, Wilma Stevenson and Brent Hone trailed all day to lose 16-25.

Narre Warren (1) 2-55 lost to Hampton Park (1) 14-66.

Division 3 was at Noble Park and had a bad day. Janice Moran, Rose Rasmussen, Keith Mark and Geoff Miller won 21-20, But Pam Uren, Enid Gibb, Truus Henneman and Peter Groom (1228); and Pauline Kempf, Alan Mark, Joe McGuire and Colin Groom (17-35) both lost.

Narre Warren (2) 2-50 lost to Noble Park (1) 14-83.

At Waverley Golf, the Division 6A (six-aside) outfit was the only winning team for the day. Nancy Pugh, Helen McCarthy and Graham Peterson allowed their opponents to win only five of the 21 ends and won 30-8, but Len O'Brien, Diane Peterson and Brian Fraser went down 14-21.

Summer's favourite sport will return to the local area on Saturday, with the Dandenong District Cricket Association set to kick-off. With the competition re-structure, the Turf 1 grade is set to be fierce, and the quality will rise to yet another level. Can Mordialloc claim a three peat? Or will another challenger emerge? NICK CREELY takes a look at how each side could fare.

How far can they go?

Berwick's list is undoubtedly glittered with talent, and they possess some of the finest local cricket names such as Nathan Pilon, Jarrod Goodes and Matt Chasemore. But the gap between their best and worst has been an issue for the last couple of years, and need an overall improvement across the board to climb back into finals. The addition of former Casey-South Melbourne club champion Brendan Rose certainly helps, but the losses of James Wilcock and Jarrod Armitage see them lose two of their top four wicket takers from last year. The one thing that the Bears do have in spades is depth, and they will also back in some of their youth and emerging senior players to take the next step. Finals is within reach, but can they play more consistently as a team?

How far can they go?

A shock preliminary final loss could take nothing away from what was a brilliant Turf 1 season for the club, who continue to set the standard in the DDCA. However, with the list they have, and some of the additions to the Bucks, they are in the premiership window and must capitalise on their home and away dominance from the previous two years with nothing less than a grand final appearance.

South African A player David White is a massive in and he'll frighten some of the seasoned Turf 1 bowlers, while Chanaka Silva and Gayantha Wijethilake are stars and should slot in brilliantly in the side. Spots will be hard to get, which is a perfect problem to have for a club that is certainly primed to go one better on last year.

Their list, however, is shaping up nicely and they'll be confident they can make a deep run into finals. The addition of seamer Peter Sofra will help add to an impressive bowling group, while Jaime Brohier is a run machine who has had a successful stint with Frankston Peninsula after making piles of runs for Lyndale. The improvement of their core list, and ability to retain their stars should see them as one of the teams to watch this season. They also welcome a new Turf 1 skipper, with Ciaron Connelly set to take on the big job.

How far can they go?

Some key ins, but some equally key outs, the Cobras will enter the season as one of the genuine unknowns. One thing is almost certain, their bowling attack stacks up with any Turf 1 side, with Cameron Dinger and former Sri Lankan test player Suraj Randhiv giving the side the best spin combination in the competition. Adding to the usual suspects in Michael Davies and Kaushyla Weeraratne with the new ball, and they look formidable. But can they score enough runs as a batting group? The losses of former skipper Matthew Cox and veteran opener Brad Downe leave the side a bit vulnerable. Only played in a grand final two years ago, but may be battling to be in the race for finals.

The reigning premiers are once again looming as a threat to claim their third consecutive Turf 1 premiership, in what would be one of the most extraordinary runs local cricket has seen in recent memory. Brilliantly coached by the highly regarded Adrian Jones, the Bloodhounds are well drilled, and each member plays their role. Young quick Dylan Campbell will take the reins as skipper, replacing club legend Stuart Squires who is taking some time off after being at the forefront of a golden era, while other bowlers in Jakob Woinarski and Chathura Athukorala won't be at the club this season. It won't matter, however, with Nuwan Kulasekera - who has taken 199 ODI wickets and 48 test wickets with Sri Lanka - signing on for the club. Adding to the star power of Ian Daniel and Damith Mapa Ralage, the Bloodhounds are primed to once again be in the top echelon of sides.

How far can they go?

The Maroons have lost some key players ahead of the season, with Asfan Thajudeen taking over the captaincy in what looks to be a new look side. Last year's leading bowler, Gayantha Wijethilaka, departs, and that should have an impact on their strike power with the new ball. But some strong overseas additions, such as Dineth Silva and Charan Chahal, should ensure they remain competitive, and they will be hoping that some youngsters can take their chances to shine when called upon.

But they could be in the midst of a relegation battle, with the talent and improvement of sides around them almost certain to make it difficult.

The Bloods will be snarling after falling short in their Turf 1 decider to Mordialloc last year, and will be a side with plenty of motivation to upset the stunning run of Mordi.

Featuring some brilliant names such as captain-coach Craig Slocombe, multiple Wookey Medal winner Steve Spoljaric, Former international spinner Malinga Bandara, the Bloods have no shortage of star power. Jarrod Armitage returns from a stint at Berwick and will be a crucial part of the side, while former junior Matt Wetering returns after doing some excellent work at Dandenong, and will be among the best quicks in the competition almost immediately. The depth is also an impressive aspect of the club, and plenty of kids and seniors will be pushing their case at Turf 1 level. They know what it takes to win premierships, and with Slocombe leading the charge, the Bloods will take some beating.

The Saints were only a couple of games away from a shock finals berth in their return to the DDCA's top flight last year, and will be hoping that they can find some improvement within their list after a relatively quiet off-season to push for finals or at least make it hard for other sides around them. The class of the Turf 1 looks as good as it has ever looked, so it would be an incredible achievement for the club to break through and play finals. But with Kaushalya Gajasinghe still around and in the prime of his career, the Saints will internally be confident that they can be one of the surprise packets of the season despite a couple of losses in Shakeel Ahmad and Adam Welcome, who were both influential last season. Regardless of whether the club plays finals this year, the Saints are a proud club and will leave nothing in the tank.
