Bowser blues Motorists have been left reeling after facing the brunt of sky-rocketing petrol prices across Casey, which hit a four-year high last week, stretching the household budgets of families.

Increased oil price has affected the wholesale price of refined petrol which has had a flow-on effect at the pump, according to RACV vehicle engineering manager Michael Case.

"Fuel is essential; an increase hurts family budgets and contributes to the cost of living.

It's up the industry to justify current pricing," he said.

According to petrolspy.com, United service station on the South Gippsland Highway in Cranbourne had unleaded fuel at 165.7c a litre on Friday 27 September, while Shell on the Western Port Highway in Lynbrook was 167.9c,

and BP on Berwick-Clyde Road, Berwick also at 167.9c.

Drivers filling up at Coles Express on Berwick-Cranbourne Road, Clyde North were stung at extra 10 cents a litre for unleaded fuel (167.9c), compared to Coles Express on Sladen Street, Cranbourne (157.9c), which is less than seven kilometres away.

Accused of crime spree

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A pair of 13-year-old boys are accused of a 24hour spree of car theft, home invasion, burglary and thefts from vehicles in Narre Warren South and Berwick, a children's court has heard.

During one of the dozen or more break-ins, two teenage girls hid while the accused boys allegedly rummaged through their Narre Warren South home on 27 September.

The girls barricaded themselves in a bedroom as the intruders - one armed with a hunting knife -tried to enter the room, the court was told.

During the burglary, the co-accused pair allegedly stole items including a wallet, Mercedes Benz car key and a laptop.

They were arrested by police in a blue Nissan Pulsar that they had allegedly stolen hours earlier from Lynbrook.

Inside the car, police found numerous items stolen during the 24-hour spree.

On 26-27 September, the pair allegedly broke into six other cars, tried to break into four others and burgled a primary school and two other homes.

From one home, they allegedly stole $12,000 of goods including jewellery, an electronic tablet and a cordless drill.

At another home burglary, a machete was left behind on the toilet floor.

During their no-comment interviews, they were "uncooperative, destructive and aggressive" as well as threatening police while in custody, a police member told the children's court on 1 October.

Both were bailed despite police opposition who argued they were an unacceptable risk of

endangering the community.

The pair had been both cleared of similar offences by a children's court in August due to being found doli incapax.

That is, they were not mature enough to understand the difference between right and wrong or the nature of their offending.

The court heard the boys will be assessed for possible doli incapax in this case.

One of the boys lived with his mother who had mental illness, a disability and was supported by Child Protection services.

He had been without a case worker for some time due to a lack of available male workers, and had been unoccupied during school holidays, the court heard. "There needs to be a child protection focus," the magistrate said. "The family needs more support.

"It's sad that we have capacity to lock young people up but not an availability of male mentors to work one-on-one with (the accused) at this point."

The other boy lived in residential care - where he had been allowed to stay out until 9pm, the court heard.

He had been assaulted during a previous stint at a juvenile detention centre, the court was told.

The magistrate granted the boys bail because of their age and the need to keep them "out of the system".

There was no evidence to show that the boys knew the teenage girls were in the house, the judge noted.

Their "risk" to the community was being managed with conditions such as supervision, a 6pm night curfew, and bans on driving a motor vehicle and associating with one another.

Recognising the past

By Jessica Anstice City of Casey will be reviewing the lack of Casey branding in Bunjil Place as well as the lack of display of council information, history and memorabilia.

Council officers will prepare a report that investigates and addresses the lack of display that explains the story behind and origin of the wood panelling used throughout Bunjil Place.

It has been suggested that the display could be one that shows pictures of the tree in its original state and the story of how it has come to be used in Bunjil Place.

It was also noted that the story of the cenotaph be captured in a plaque at that location, stating that the date of the opening and the

special components including the Morse code pillars.

"I think this is a fantastic idea, in America they do this very well; wherever you go there's a piece of history on a footstep, on a plaque or on a statue," City of Casey Cr Susan Serey said.

"Overall I think it would be great if we could have more of a historical push in our local area but this is a great start.

"We could definitely have more historical plaques in our city, particularly in Berwick and Cranbourne, our oldest cities. We just celebrated the 150th birthdays in both suburbs."

Cr Serey said this is the first step to recognising our past in the City of Casey.

Bunjil Place will celebrate it's first anniversary in October.

Clyde Road commute pain

By Jessica Anstice The heavily congested Clyde Road is continuing to cause chaos and headaches for drivers.

Rachael Gardiner said at around 5.30pm some nights on Clyde Road, it can take her up to 20 minutes to travel from the Berwick train station to Greaves Road.

"Clyde Road is atrocious, it's impossible to get to Kangan Drive and the traffic stops at Harkaway Road," Robyn Sullivan said.

"It took me 1.15 hours to get from Timbarra to St John of God Hospital on a Wednesday afternoon; it's terrible.

"Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road is nearly as bad anytime of the day and it's become a misery getting through traffic in Berwick."

Thompson Road through to Patterson Road is highly congested. She suggested to get rid of single lane roundabouts and make it two lanes all the way.

Berwick resident Paul Elmer said Clyde Road, Soldiers Road, the Kangan Drive roundabout, Harkaway Road, Clyde Road and the

Monah Freeway are the worst congested roads in the region.

"I have lived in the Kingsmere Estate since 2002 and use all of these roads to get in and out of the Berwick area," he said.

"If you travel on these roads at the wrong time you're screwed, even on weekends now.

They just can't cope with demand.

"In peak times there are no options but to cut through various housing estates to skip the blocked spots. There is too much focus on adding more houses before road upgrades."

Mr Elmer said peak hour on the Monash Freeway is bad and he uses the Clyde Road exit to get on and off the freeway.

"It's the worst for me on the exit in the evenings. It just bottlenecks because so much traffic wants to get off the freeway and so much

wants to go to and from Pakenham," he said.

"The congestion is hit and miss with either pushing back from Clyde Road to either the Narre Warren exits to even around Ernest Wanie exit. I exit at Ernst Wankie exit and go around the back of Berwick.

"With fatigue being a big issue with drivers in any situation congested roads are only going to increase this problem in drivers."

Alan Ferrance said Clyde Road should have been duplicated prior to opening all of the new housing developments.

Some of the best local performers are gearing up to battle it out in the ultimate showdown when Bunjil Place hosts its first busking festival this weekend.

The free Busk A Move Festival will take over the Bunjil Place Plaza on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 October, and the Casey community is encouraged to come along and join in the fun.

More than 25 acts will take to the stage across the weekend, competing to be crowned the Busk-Master and share in some of the great prizes on offer.

Along with the opportunity to watch the performers in action and drop some coins for your favourite acts, there will also be face painting, rides and tasty food trucks to make it a great day out.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett encouraged residents to head along with family and friends for a fun day out.

"Busk A Move will showcase some of the best emerging talent, with a great line up of performers locked in - from solo acoustic musicians, rap artists and bands to magicians and dance acts," Cr Ablett said.

"Bunjil Place is approaching its first birthday at the end this month. This is the first busking festival we've hosted at our amazing new arts and cultural precinct as we continue to offer great events that the whole family can enjoy.

"With spring now upon us, it's the perfect opportunity to kick back and soak up the sunshine in the Bunjil Place Plaza whilst watching some of the best local talent in action as they compete to take out the title of Casey's best busker."

Do not go back to the same area after being swooped. It turns out that magpies are very intelligent and have good memory, so they are more likely to target the same people.

Ensure that you are continuously watching them. They are more likely to swoop from behind but if they feel like they are being watched, you will be less of a target. Try drawing eyes on either the back of a hat or helmet to give the illusion.

Magpies are irritated by bikes and it could potentially result in you falling off. So calmly walk your bike out of the area. Another option is to attach sticks to your helmet so that the magpies can't get close to your head.

Fuel thief Narre Warren Police Station are investigating a theft that occurred at a business on Narre Warren - Cranbourne Road, Narre Warren on 17 September.

Police allege that at approximately 4pm an unknown male attended at a service station, filled a silver Holden bearing false plates with fuel and then drove off without making any attempt to pay.

The male driver who is described as having

a Caucasian appearance, large build and dark balding hair, also had a young male child in the front passenger seat.

Detectives from Casey CIU executed four search warrants in Cranbourne, Berwick and Hampton Park on Tuesday 25 September.

As a result of the search warrants, four people were arrested in relation to armed robberies. During the warrants, police seized a number of vehicles and weapons.

The armed robberies came about from fake advertisements on an online market where vehicles were listed for sale and the victims responded, turning up to an agreed location with cash.

I live on a corner block in Pakenham and I am tired of people parking on my nature strip and destroying my lawn and saplings.

Two girls - home alone - hid and barricaded themselves in a bedroom during one of the alleged burglaries. Liz Paice was lacking so much confidence when she entered the Star News Group and Harvey Norman Grand Final TV competition that she prematurely purchased a brand new flat-screen last week.

Now the Berwick mum and her kids, Taylah, Josh, will have two screens to watch the latest nail-biting AFL action.

Mrs Paice received a call from Harvey Norman on Tuesday morning, informing her she had won a 65 inch Ultra High Definition TV. It is one of the few things Mrs Paice has ever won in her life.

“We’ve just gone out and bought a new TV two weeks ago because we never thought we would win,” she said.

“The kids were absolutely stoked.

“I thought to myself, ‘oh my god what are we going to do’, but then we got the idea to mount the new TV on the wall.”

All the family had to do was snap a selfie in front of their tiny TV, donning their team’s colours.

Now, they will have a state-of-the-art television delivered to their home.

Unfortunately, Mrs Paice and her kids aren’t overly keen on the Pies or the Eagles.

The family is split in their loyalties between the Bulldogs, Cats and Swans.

Harvey Norman Fountain Gate proprietor Grant Hammond said it was extremely fulfilling to host the competition.

Beekeepers were urgently called to a very busy car park in the Narre Warren area on Friday afternoon, 28 September.

A team from The Bunyip BeeKeeper attended the scene to rescue a colony of Italian bees

swarming around the rear of a blue car.

On site, beekeeper Caroline Hammond showed 16-year-old, beekeeper enthusiast Lachlan, the ropes and ways to beekeeping on his first day of work.

Spring is the start of beekeeping season.

Victorian Seniors Card holders are encouraged to explore Melbourne and regional Victoria with free travel from 7 to 14 October, as part of the 36th Victorian Seniors Festival.

Minister for housing, disability and ageing Martin Foley said the free public transport will help people get to as many of the festival activities as possible.

The free travel applies to Melbourne's trains, trams and buses and regional V/Line trains, coaches and buses.

Seniors need to carry their Seniors Myki and Victorian Seniors Card with them, and touch on and off as usual - but will not be not be charged during the eight days of free public transport.

The Berwick Orchid Show bloomed with colour, excitement and celebration for the 25th year over the weekend.

The event was hosted at the Berwick Masonic Hall on High Street in Berwick, with around several hundred members of the public attending over the course of Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30.

“The high percentage of new members who exhibited plants and did as well as they did was

a real buzz for us,” Berwick Orchid Club president Murray Harding said.

“We had a lot of families come through and we also had a lot of people take up the free nine month membership which was great.

“The show has improved only in that the exhibition was of higher quality and there was more of a variety.”

Around 30 Berwick Orchid Club members submitted plants for display.

Mr Harding said the club is very grateful to their sponsors in particular Berwick Pottery.

The City of Casey has breathed new life into the heritage-listed, original Hampton Park Primary School building by turning it into a great community workspace for the Hampton Park Men's Shed.

The building was facing demolition in 2016 as part of the Department of Education and Training's (DET) redevelopment of Hampton Park Primary School to modernise the school buildings.

Following a passionate community campaign to save the building, which was supported by the City of Casey, council accepted a proposal by the School and DET for the building to be gifted to the City of Casey and relocated onto Council land in Marjorie Eastick Reserve, Hampton Park.

Following the relocation, Council invested $350,000 in refurbishing and extending the building to transform it into a community facility, now known as the Hampton Park Primary School Community Workspace, which is currently being leased by the Hampton Park Men's Shed.

City of Casey Deputy Mayor Cr Wayne Smith BJ JP officially opened the rejuvenated facility on Saturday 22 September amongst members of the Hampton Park community including the daughter of the original builder.

"The building was constructed in 1922 and was one of the few buildings left in the suburb that survived the early development of Hampton Park," Cr Smith said.

"Having served the local community for more

than 90 years, Council is thrilled to have been able to ensure the building remained a valuable community asset and give it a new lease on life."

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said Council was proud to reach a great outcome for the community.

"The school and wider community were passionate about saving this building, and Council is proud that we were able to assist and ensure it remained in Hampton Park," Cr Ablett said.

"Currently home to the Hampton Park Men's Shed, this facility will provide a positive and supportive environment for men to meet and work on projects and provide opportunities to support men's health, wellbeing and social interaction."

Cancer Council Victoria is encouraging women in Casey City to get the girls together for a Girls' Night In event to help support local women diagnosed with a breast or gynaecological cancer.

The Girls' Night In campaign runs throughout the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but events can also be held in November. All funds raised go toward Cancer Council's work in vital research, prevention and support services for womens cancers.

To get involved, simply register to host an event, invite your girlfriends over for a night in and ask them to donate what they would have spent on a night out.

Jailed for abusive attack

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drunken man, angry that his partner's father didn't pick up duty-free cigarettes from an overseas trip, has repeatedly bashed his partner and trashed her house during a violent rage, a court has heard.

As the man's abusive rant flared on 21 August, the partner called her parents and tried to pack clothes to take her and her daughter to stay at her mother's place.

She was punched several times, including in the face.

After the initial assault, she confronted him about "hitting a woman", Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

The man faced Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 1 October on multiple charges of assault as well as breaching a limited familyviolence intervention order at the time.

His defence lawyer told the court his 39 days in remand- his first time in custody - had been an "eye-opener".

"It's not a place he's ever going to go back to."

Police sought a further jail term given he had several times been previously convicted of assaulting the same victim.

"His behaviour is clearly escalating," police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Luke

McDonald said.

Magistrate Pauline Spencer noted the man had "not got far" on his current community corrections order, including turning up to appointments while drunk.

"You concede yourself you're causing a great deal of harm to your partner over a great period of time."

She jailed the man for two months, including time already served in remand.

When released, the man was ordered to restart his CCO with judicial monitoring, alcohol treatment and violent-offending programs.

He was served with a full family-violence intervention order protecting his partner.

A new program to support vulnerable young people in the City of Casey has received funding, thanks to the Andrews Labor Government's $2.5 million boost to the successful Empower Youth program.

Minister for Youth Affairs Jenny Mikakos announced South East Community Links would receive support to deliver their Empower YOU project. South East Community Links will engage youth workers to help design and implement various other youth projects and provide coordinated services for up to 50 young people from the City of Casey each year.

Their Empower YOU project will focus on building the capacity of a culturally diverse youth consultancy group to improve health, community participation, education and employment pathways. "The Empower Youth program has led to the employment of at least 20 youth workers across the state, who each play a vital role in supporting young Victorians reach their potential," Ms Mikakos said.

"Our funding boost to the program will assist

organisations like South East Community Links build the capacity of local young people, and help them feel part of and contribute to their community."

South East Community Links was one of five selected organisations, with the others including: Whittlesea Community Connections, which will develop a youth inclusion project overseen by an established Youth Advisory Group. The program will also deliver training in relevant areas, such as youth mental health, and provide links to volunteer opportunities; Swan Hill Rural City Council, whose project will reconnect young people to education, employment and training opportunities and support them to make progress towards their identified goals through coaching, planning groups and access to services and resources; Moorabool Shire Council, which will deliver a youth engagement project to provide targeted support to young people who are at risk of disengaging from school and their workplace; and Centacare, which will engage youth workers

in Geelong to help design and implement the Empower Youth program in partnership other local services providers, including headspace.

This funding boost will see at least five more youth workers employed across the Empower Youth program, in addition to the 15 youth workers employed in the first round of Empower Youth. The new funding will support at least 250 young people per annum for the next four years.

The City of Casey will be holding a Casey Cares Mayoral Charity Concert on Sunday 28 October 2018 to raise much needed funds for drought-affected farmers.

The concert, to be held in the Bunjil Place Theatre, will feature a range of local performers.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said we will be bringing the best in local entertainment together to raise funds for this worthy cause.

"We all know that our farmers are having a tough time due to the drought and we want to do our bit to support them through this time," said the Mayor.

"Our previous Casey Cares events have been instrumental in raising much needed funds and we hope this one will be just as successful."

River Gum Ward Cr Wayne Smith BJ JP said he felt that establishing a charity concert for the farmers would raise awareness within our community of the hardships being faced and also give our community an opportunity to contribute to raising funds.

"We have organised a great line up of performers including Jonathan Welch OAM (of 'Choir of Hard Knocks' fame), Allan Caswell (international country music performer/songwriter), Casey Idol and Casey's Got Talent Winners, as well as local singers and dancers," said Cr Smith BJ JP. "All of the performers will be donating their time to support this cause and we hope that our community will get behind the concert

and help us raise funds for the farmers."

The solar power system comprises a 5KW battery and 17 solar panels to keep running costs down.

“By doing all these adjustments, we’ve met zero net carbon, so this house will produce as much energy as it consumes, making it carbon neutral,” says Rod Fitzsimmons, sales manager of SJD Homes.

The project has shown that Zero Energy Homes don't have to cost much more than a standard build.

“A standard Zero Energy Home might cost around $10,000 on top of the build to cover the price of the sustainable extras; but in the long run, the savings are enormous as energy bills are heavily reduced.”

According to a recent report by CRC for Low Carbon Living, if all new homes were built as Zero Energy Homes, total emissions could be reduced by around 700,000 tonnes per year.

Lean and clean message Through her business Paleo to Go, Berwick’s Aarti Royan is striving to make clean, nutritious process-free whole foods easily accessible.

Her mission comes following her past life as an ‘overweight, terribly lethargic desk junkie’ who climbed stairs like she was ‘climbing Everest.’

But that was years ago now. Today, Aarti ‘can’t even relate’ to the highly stressed and borderline majorly depressed person she once was.

And she says it’s all thanks to her quest to live a ‘clean lifestyle.’

It started almost ten years ago when a colleague introduced her to the Whole30 program. Put simply, the Whole30 program is designed to change the way participants eat, think and feel in 30 days. Partakers cook their own meals where all inflammatory foods and beverages are removed. They eat three clean meals a day which are made with Whole30 approved ingredients (meats, seafood, veggies, and eggs).

Admitting she had tried every diet under the sun, Aarti warmed to the program and confessed it improved her mental wellbeing substantially. She could ‘find no traces of her depression’ and even signed up to do the 100 kilometre Oxfam marathon.

She finished the program having lost the final desired kilos and had gained a new mindset.

But where to now?

“Not long after (I finished the program) we went to Cape Bridgewater for a holiday and I was thinking ‘wow, it’s a six-hour drive.’ Usually, you would stop at McDonald’s and I was saying to my husband, this is really frustrating because I can’t get something to eat if I don’t pack anything. I have to be so organised,” Aarti said.

“So that’s when I decided that I was going to start something. I had this vision that you’ve

got to have clean food wherever you go, even if it’s just a little tub of something that’s process, grain and dairy free - something that people like me can eat no matter where they are. We have so many kiosks for unhealthy foods, why can’t there be something for clean food?”

For Aarti, Paleo to Go was ‘the logical progression from the Whole30 Program’ and she now has three heavily researched, ready-to-go paleo products available to via her website.

Her ‘Cleanola’ (a ‘clean’ take on granola) has been a standout, while her Mocha Hemp Balls and Turmeric Latte Blend have also proved to be crowd favourites.

“The long-term vision is that I really want to have a lot of products but I’m really in the (developing stage) at moment,” Aarti said.

“I’m doing a lot of research and I’m trying to get the products out there. But because it’s all process free, it’s very logistically difficult because I’m not adding a lot to the product so they have a shorter shelf life.”

Adding to Aarti’s workload is her full-time job, training to become Australia’s first certified Whole30 coach and the upcoming release of her book, Paleo, The Indian Way. “The book is launching very soon - I’m so excited,” Aarti said.

“I’ve got 50 paleo Indian recipes within the book but it’s not just about being paleo - (the recipes) are also all Whole30 compliant.

“And they’re very doable - they’re not based on ingredients that aren’t in your pantry. I’m big on the idea that (diets) have to be sustainable and on a budget. And it’s Indian because a lot of the paleo eaters obviously want some variety in their food.”

And while it may seem like she has a lot on her plate, Aarti admits it’s all a part of her masterplan to spread the clean eating message.

Seniors get to connect More than 150 local senior residents attended a morning tea at the Narre Warren Bowls Club and to listen to guest speaker Dr Richard Weston and hear from special guest Julian Hill MP Federal Member for Bruce.

Dr Weston talked about staying active and engaged in life and he emphasised the importance of supporting friends and neighbours to keep interested and connected in their neighbourhoods and communities.

Julian Hill explained the federal boundary changes and his role as the Federal Member for Bruce that now incorporates Narre Warren, Endeavour Hills and Hallam.

The morning tea was also a great opportunity for participants to catch up with their local Member of Parliament, Luke Donnellan and share concerns they may have.

"The important message from Dr Richard Weston on staying engaged and active was delivered with such energy and humour - a great lead in to the upcoming 2018 Victorian Seniors Festival," Mr Donnellan said.

"It's great to see so many local residents attend today to catch up with old friends and make new connections."

As well, the Endeavour Hills Men's Shed had a display of their local works in the community including recycling pallets into children's tepees for reading or playing in and are in demand with local children's services.

Classic hits rock at retirement festival Two local retirement villages will be hosting afternoons of free live music as part of the Lendlease Spring Retirement Festival.

Fiddlers Green in Berwick will welcome The Stiff Gins to their stage - acclaimed for the exquisite voices and raw talent, while Woodlands Park will host Australia's Girls of Motown.

Audiences at both events can expect to hear all the classics of the past 50 years, be up dancing to the high-energy performances - and in some cases, perhaps even be invited on stage!

These performances are two of 23 free events - from gardening and cooking workshops to live music and fashion parades - hosted at Lendlease villages across Victoria.

This year's Spring Retirement Festival will see over 60 events nationally. The festival runs from 10 September to 20 October.

Comrey Edgeworth - Within a month of the season starting last year, Edgeworth had already racked up three second XI centuries, and eventually cracked in to have an impact at first XI level and making a half century. Has an appetite to bat for long periods, and is likely to get a start in the top side in Round 1.

Peter Cassidy - It was a genuine break out year for the medium pacer, who took 34 wickets and showed he is the craftiness to make it at the level. Will have more responsibility this season, but the premiership player has a big future.

In what could a massive boost for the Panthers, Australian quick James Pattinson could be seen in the early rounds, but only as a batsman, while the list is healthy and raring to go. Come Round 1 against Ringwood on Saturday, it is possible that 20 players will be jostling for just 11 spots in the side, an incredible headache for the selectors to work out. Skipper Tom Donnell will go around again and once again open up with his long-time partner in crime Brett Forsyth, and his leadership and calmness around his group is first class. A couple of handy depth players have left for further opportunity or to return to local level, but Berwick quick James Wilcock is a star and will be thereabouts to crack straight into the side, while a number of young players will push their case and keep the senior players on their toes. The success of 2017/18 wasn't because of one individual, it was a collective team effort based on support and connection between all the great grades. Coach Nick Speak is highly credentialed and has brought about an enormous amount of professionalism to the group. If the Panthers can withhold the fact they will be the hunted after claiming both pieces of silverware last year and start the season off brightly, they have every chance to once again be the team to beat.

Ryan Quirk - The gritty young opening batsman has joined the club from Dandenong where he topped the Second XI run scorers last season. Moving to Casey Fields to get a proper crack at First XI cricket, Quirk is expected to slot straight in to the side with immediate impact.

Nathan Lambden - A towering quick with immense passion for his side, Lambden could

be set for a big season after a brilliant pre-season. Was solid last year, but will look to take his game to the next level and break back in the Victorian second XI. Home Base: Casey Fields, Cranbourne First match: vs Frankston Peninsula, Casey Fields, 6 October More: After such a tough 2017/18 campaign, the first thing that the Swans did in the offseason was look to shore up its leadership and find the right people to help get the club back in finals contention this season. The addition of highly esteemed coach Nick Jewell - who has been lauded for his work with FrankstonPeninsula - will give the Swans a newfound edge to their game and is sure to improve their standards both on and off-field. While the majority of the core group remains down at Casey Fields, the loss of the highly talented Brendan Rose will certainly hurt, but the addition of quality quick Josh Dowling, as well as Dandenong youngster Ryan Quirk - who claimed the Premier Seconds player of the year award last season - will see them with an exciting amount of depth. Last season, the club ranked 16th in the competition for total runs scored, a statistic they will need to majorly improve on. The likes of Dev Pollock, vice-captain Lachlan Sperling, Ryan Eaton, Jordan Wyatt and Chris Benedek all proved that they have what it takes, and if they can start converting their 20s to 50s, and their 50s to 100s, it will make them a formidable batting line-up capable of putting a big score on the board. Adding to the addition of Quirk, who is a class young opener, as well as the sturdy Michael Wallace and overseas gun Luke Wells - who is expected to arrive in Round 2 or 3 - and the Swans have a strong nucleus that can help support the bowlers.

Demons to hit the court

By Hayley Wildes In a major milestone for Casey Demons Netball, the club officially launched its inaugural season with a celebration breakfast on Wednesday last week (26 September) at Casey Stadium.

Having successfully applied for a licence for the 2019 Victorian Netball League (VNL) season, the Demons will bring elite netball to Casey in the hope of growing the sport for all in the region.

With representatives from the Melbourne Football Club, Casey Demons Football Club and many other key supporters and stakeholders from varying community organisations in attendance, the importance of this club to so many people was evident.

Melbourne Football Club general manager of football operations, Josh Mahoney, spoke about the passion within the room and how he hopes that translates on court.

"To be awarded this licence is a significant moment and if the passion that has already come out today is anything to go by of what this team is going to bring on the court, then I think we're heading for a very successful period of time," he said.

"When we were asked to get involved with the bid, for us it was a no-brainer.

"First of all it was about what we're trying to do in this region; it's a no-brainer because of the work we're trying to do in the community, it's a no-brainer because of the partnerships we've already got out here in the City of Casey, and it's a no-brainer because we want to build the best programs we can - the best programs and pathways for kids in this region, but also in elite programs."

Inaugural head coach Robynn Pym spoke with enthusiasm about what the future holds for Casey Netball.

"The opportunity to be a part of this, I just

"It's going to be a really great environment and a great program. Registration for the screening day has seen 150 players register, so we're pretty excited."

She also acknowledged what this program means to the region and for the young netballers coming through the ranks.

"What it means is that kids can actually be playing netball, playing the game they love

and look for a local role model. When you ask young kids about various elite athletes in the netball world in the Suncorp Super Netball, they don't actually know them personally," she said.

"This gives them an opportunity to say 'oh, I saw her down the street at Woolworths and she buys the same things that I buy!'

"I think it's really important to be getting girls on the move, getting them in the community and getting leaders out there. It's not just about what we do on-court, it's how we hold ourselves off the court as well and I think when kids can see that, we'll get more and more playing the sport."

Pym has been involved with coaching netball for over 25 years and her involvement with the Victorian junior netball talent pathway and local leagues make her the perfect person to lead Casey forward and grow the sport in the region. Most recently, Pym was the senior coach at the Berwick Netball Club in season 2018.

"There are so many talented athletes in this area and they're all doing it on their own without a huge, elite high-performance program," she said.

"So joining forces with Casey Demons is giving them an elite, high-performance program - and not one where they just show up and play, but where they're actually getting as fit as they can be.

"From an on-court perspective, I'm looking for excited players, I'm looking for determination and looking to build a really elite environment.

"For me, I'm not just coaching because I want to coach netball, I want to coach for the community - it's just really exciting."

With the season kicking off in April 2019, the Casey Demons are certainly already well prepared to make some noise in the VNL.

How far can they go?

Berwick's list is undoubtedly glittered with talent, and they possess some of the finest local cricket names such as Nathan Pilon, Jarrod Goodes and Matt Chasemore. But their gap between their best and worst has been an issue for the last couple of years, and need an overall improvement across the board to climb back into finals. The addition of former Casey-South Melbourne club champion Brendan Rose certainly helps, but the losses of James Wilcock and Jarrod Armitage see them lose two of their top four wicket takers from last year. The one thing that the Bears do have in spades is depth, and they will also back in some of their youth and emerging senior players to take the next step. Finals is within reach, but can they play more consistently as a team?

How far can they go?

A shock preliminary final loss could take nothing away from what was a brilliant Turf 1 season for the club, who continue to set the standard in the DDCA. However, with the list they have, and some of the additions to the Bucks, they are in the premiership window and must capitalise on their home and away dominance from the previous two years with nothing less than a grand final appearance. South African A player David White is a massive in and he'll frighten some of the seasoned Turf 1 bowlers, while Chanaka Silva and Gayantha Wijethilake are stars and should slot in brilliantly in the side. Spots will be hard to get, which is a perfect problem to have for a club that is certainly primed to go one better on last year.

The Hawks have been one of the most consistent Turf 1 sides for the past two years, but have been unable to take that next step when it comes to finals. Their list, however, is shaping up nicely and they'll be confident they can make a deep run into finals. The addition of seamer Peter Sofra will help add to an impressive bowling group, while Jaime Brohier is a run machine who has had a successful stint with Frankston Peninsula after making piles of runs for Lyndale. The improvement of their core list, and ability to retain their stars should see them as one of the teams to watch this season. They also welcome a new Turf 1 skipper, with Ciaron Connelly set to take on the big job.

How far can they go?

Some key ins, but some equally key outs, the Cobras will enter the season as one of the genuine unknowns. One thing is almost certain, their bowling attack stacks up with any Turf 1 side, with Cameron Dinger and former

Sri Lankan test player Suraj Randhiv giving the side the best spin combination in the competition. Adding to the usual suspects in Michael Davies and Kaushyla Weeraratne with the new ball, and they look formidable. But can they score enough runs as a batting group? The losses of former skipper Matthew Cox and veteran opener Brad Downe leave the side a bit vulnerable. Only played in a grand final two years ago, but may be battling to be in the race for finals.

The reigning premiers are once again looming as a threat to claim their third consecutive Turf 1 premiership, in what would be one of the most extraordinary runs local cricket has seen in recent memory. Brilliantly coached by the highly regarded Adrian Jones, the Bloodhounds are well drilled, and each member plays their role. Young quick Dylan Campbell will take the reins as skipper, replacing club legend Stuart Squires who is taking some time off after being at the forefront of a golden era, while other bowlers in Jakob Woinarski and Chathura Athukorala won't be at the club this season. It won't matter, however, with Nuwan Kulasekera - who has taken 199 ODI wickets and 48 test wickets with Sri Lanka - signing on for the club. Adding to the star power of Ian Daniel and Damith Mapa Ralage, the Bloodhounds are primed to once again be in the top echelon of sides.

The Maroons have lost some key players ahead of the season, with Asfan Thajudeen taking over the captaincy in what looks to be a new look side. Last year's leading bowler, Gayantha Wijethilaka, departs, and that should have an impact on their strike power with the new ball. But some strong overseas additions, such as Dineth Silva and Charan Chahal, should ensure they remain competitive, and

they will be hoping that some youngsters can take their chances to shine when called upon.

But they could be in the midst of a relegation battle, with the talent and improvement of sides around them almost certain to make it difficult.

The Bloods will be snarling after falling short in their Turf 1 decider to Mordialloc last year, and will be a side with plenty of motivation to upset the stunning run of Mordi.

Featuring some brilliant names such as captain-coach Craig Slocombe, multiple Wookey Medal winner Steve Spoljaric, Former international spinner Malinga Bandara, the Bloods have no shortage of star power. Jarrod Armitage returns from a stint at Berwick and will be a crucial part of the side, while former junior Matt Wetering returns after doing some excellent work at Dandenong, and will be among the best quicks in the competition almost immediately. The depth is also an impressive aspect of the club, and plenty of kids and seniors will be pushing their case at Turf 1 level. They know what it takes to win premierships, and with Slocombe leading the charge, the Bloods will take some beating.

How far can they go?

The Saints were only a couple of games away from a shock finals berth in their return to the DDCA's top flight last year, and will be hoping to find some improvement within their list after a relatively quiet off-season to push for finals or at least make it hard for other sides around them. The class of the Turf 1 looks as good as it has ever looked, so it would be an incredible achievement for the club to break through and play finals. But with Kaushalya Gajasinghe still around and in the prime of his career, the Saints will internally be confident that they can be one of the surprise packets of the season despite a couple of losses in Shakeel Ahmad and Adam Welcome, who were both influential last season. Regardless of whether the club plays finals this year, the Saints are a proud club and will leave nothing in the tank.
