The project, estimated to cost approximately $130 million, would be co-funded by a Liberal State Government if given the tick of approval by Minister Alan Tudge and PM Scott Morrison. McGregor Road would be redeveloped to include either an overpass or an underpass depending on the findings of planning procedures. Mr Wood aims to have the cash secured by the New Year. “I’m aiming to have an announcement, if I can convince those around me, by the end of the year,” he said. “The whole McGregor Road needs to be fixed up. “It’s an absolute nightmare and it’s bad for local residents and bad for business.” It comes during Star News Group’s Unblock the Gridlock campaign, highlighting the plight of road infrastructure and crippling congestion across Melbourne’s south east. Reader nominations reveal McGregor Road is the most egregious arterial in Pakenham, second to Clyde Road of all roads in Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong. The Latrobe incumbent claimed Clyde Road was the perfect example of how the Labor State Government’s complacency has led to gridlock traffic. “In 2007 and 2010, we made an election commitment to do a grade separation on Clyde Road,” he said.

What is something people don't know about you? I like trucks - I am Secretary of the Trafalgar Truck Restorers Club, I have a truck blog and we have four historic trucks! What was your most memorable moment? I would have to say my wedding day - 30 years ago March 26 at my parents garden at Cora Lynn. It was a beautiful sunny day and the whole day was just perfect. What's the best thing about being a historian? Finding out historical connections between people, places and events. And also, people who are interested in history are always so lovely. What is your favourite movie? You may find this hard to believe but the last movie I saw with my husband (at the Cinema) was the original Crocodile Dundee - over 30 years ago! However, I do watch The Blues Brothers every time it comes on TV. If you were PM for a day, what would you do? Start a national fund to support history and the restoration of historic buildings. At school I...... Was a good student academically and incredibly bad at sport. Where is your favourite holiday destination? Tasmania - we went there for our honeymoon. So many lovely historic places! Which six guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner? Queen Victoria, Clint Eastwood, Neil Armstrong (first man on the moon), Elvis Presley, my husband John (because he would really like to meet Elvis) and George Stephenson, the railway pioneer. Opposition kicks in for Berwick soccer An elected Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $600,000 towards a new synthetic soccer pitch for the Berwick Churches Soccer Club (BCSC). The BCSC is a Christian based soccer club, administered by volunteers. It fields teams in Kick Start, all junior age groups and both men's and women's seniors in the Victorian Churches Football Association. "Sport and recreation play a vital role in the Berwick community," Liberal candidate for

Trio arrested

Rising rugby stars Kilberry Valley Primary School boys' rugby team made it into the state finals and the girls rugby team received a 'wild card' and are also playing in the state finals. On Tuesday 18 September the Pakenham Eels Rugby League team hosted the Billy Slater Qualifier in Pakenham District, and many City of Casey and Cardinia schools participated in the event. "Our students were amazing on the field and off the field showing great sportsmanship and teamwork," physical education teacher Lachlan Clydesdale said. "Well done everyone involved especially parents and school community who supported both teams."

Three men have been arrested after being spotted in an outstanding stolen car in Malvern East on Thursday, September 20. Police were called to a service station on Warrigal Road following reports of the men acting suspiciously in a Mitsubishi Pajero just after 11pm. A number of police units attended and the trio were arrested as they attempted to flee on foot. A 25-year-old Endeavour Hills man, a 28-year-old Noble Park man, and a 31-year-old Berwick man, all remain in custody and are assisting police with their enquiries.

This week, Coles team members will push a trolley across Victoria to raise enough money to fund a team of Doctors at Victoria's only children's hospice run by Very Special Kids. For the second consecutive year, team members from Coles Services will take turns to push a giant modified trolley into towns across the state to raise funds for the important cause. To coincide with the trolley push over the next two weeks, Coles will also sell $2 donation cards at 69 supermarkets in Victoria to support Very Special Kids including at Coles in Casey Central, Endeavor Hills, Fountain Gate and Berwick Central. Casey will be four of 44 locations across the state to host the trolley as it makes its way to more than 35 towns and suburbs across Victoria. Very Special Kids runs a children's hospice and specialised family support services from diagnosis to bereavement, supporting over 900 families who have a child with a lifethreatening condition in Victoria.

Need for more

We are disturbed to read that the Pakenham public celebration of the Diwali Festival of Lights is under threat because of bureaucratic red tape. We attended the inaugural festival last year in P.B. Ronald Reserve. It was a great occasion, an opportunity to meet the shire’s Indian community and see something of its culture on display, a variety of high quality food and a stream of enthusiastic dancers. The event was also attended by Cr Brett Owen, at that time the mayor, and Cr Michael Schilling. Cr Owen, resplendent in traditional white Indian clothing rather than his mayoral gowns, showed every sign of enjoying himself as he circulated in the crowd and danced to the music. According to Star News of 20 September, the festival is organised entirely by volunteers from the Indian community, through the Indian Association Casey Cardinia (IACC), and they have already spent $10,000 to meet council criteria for venue hire. Now they have been asked to produce a “comprehensive traffic management report”, at their own expense, before council will approve the venue. This is threatening IACC’s ability to hold Diwali. Last year’s event attracted almost 1000 people. Was this even allowed to proceed without a “comprehensive traffic management report”? If so, how is the situation different this year? We wonder if similar restrictions are imposed on other voluntary events in Pakenham, such as Yakkerboo, which surely faces a greater “traffic management” issue in closing off several streets for the annual Yakkerboo parade. Also, the council donates $15,000 to the Pakenham Racing Club each year for its Kids Night Out event. In our understanding, the Racing Club is not a not-for-profit community group. Every community on this planet, both large and small, relies on regular events to celebrate community spirit and bring people out of their homes to gather together. In mainstream Australian culture, events such as Christmas and the AFL Grand Final serve such a purpose. People from other cultures, migrating to Australia, bring us their joyful celebrations as well as their tax dollars. Surely few find it strange that the German Oktoberfest and the Greek Glendi Festival, to name only two, are now a familiar part of Australian culture, and can reasonably be called mainstream. By accepting these festivals and celebrations, we are welcoming those members of our community, and celebrating the acceptance of diversity in Australian culture which most people readily acknowledge to be one of its most vital features. Is our council showing a welcoming attitude to the Indian community by imposing restrictions such as Diwali faces? Or is the council prepared to support the community spirit by getting behind Diwali, rather than extinguishing the Festival of Light with a blanket of paperwork? Denise Lyons' grand plans to reprise her inspirational 32-kilometre charity walk in memory of her late sister Anne has taken an unplanned detour. But she and the walk, which supports research into the 'forgotten cancers', are still steaming ahead on 8 September. Ms Lyons, a personal assistant at Dandenong Hospital, had become an avid walker despite the "daily reminders" of her own cancer survival. However at the start of the year, her daily walks were cruelled by a painful foot-ligament injury, plantar fasciitis. "I'm absolutely hating it," she says. "The doctors say the only treatment is rest. It's a slow process." Last year, she raised $4200 when she trekked from her childhood home in Nar Nar Goon to Hampton Park. She travelled via Pakenham, Officer, Beaconsfield and Berwick to St Kevin's Catholic Church, Hampton Park - where her sister Anne's funeral service was held 16 years ago to the day. The walk, in a way, covers the geographical arc of Anne's life. Next month, Ms Lyons is aiming to cover about half the trip - as well as giving strong support to her son Sam and other family and friends over the remaining 16 kilometres. In the leadup, it's been a chance to delve through old photos and remember her effervescent, life-loving sister. Anne was just 30 when first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer - the same illness that claimed her father. She still loved life even while living with the illness for seven years, Ms Lyons said. "She could tell a story with her hands. "She was full of life, energy and fun."

A nice addition for Haileybury College Haileybury has won the 2018 Mathspace Teacher Challenge which attracted over 80,000 students and 1300 teachers from across Australia. The Mathspace Teacher challenge is about recognizing and rewarding teachers for the impact they have - not just on student achievement, but also on their students' growth. Keysborough maths teacher Sally Green

and her class of Year 5 girls achieved the highest score using the Mathspace online program, ending with 6226.05 points. This was almost 1000 points ahead of second place. Haileybury had 14 teachers in the Top 200 and three in the Top 20. In winning this competition Haileybury receives $10,000 towards the school, a student STEM entrepreneurship workshop and a staff networking workshop

with Adam Spencer. Mathspace CEO, Mohamad Jebara was very pleased with the results and the class's determination and hard work. "It's especially exciting to see that Sally's winning students are an all girl class," he said. "With such a large gender divide in school mathematics participation, it's great to see an all-girl class take first place."

Police search for Brooke Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Brooke Lawson. The 13-year-old Hoppers Crossing girl was last seen on 29 August. Police and family members hold concerns for Brooke's welfare due to her age and have released an image in the hope someone recognises her and can provide information on her whereabouts. Brooke is described as having long fair hair.

She is known to frequent the south-eastern suburbs, particularly Endeavour Hills, Narre Warren and Dandenong. Anyone who sees Brooke or has information on her whereabouts is urged to contact Werribee Police Station on 9742 9444.

James Shultz failed to appear at the Dandenong Magistrates' Court on December 7, 2017 for numerous alleged offences including contravening a community corrections order, theft and evading police. Eight warrants have been issued for the arrest of the 24 -year-old. He is known to frequent the Berwick and Pakenham areas.

The aim of the CRC’s Mainstreaming Zero Energy Homes project is to better understand the costs and consumer interest in Zero Energy Homes by following three developers and builders who constructed and designed sustainable homes in Victoria, Queensland and the ACT. Jarod Mills, Sales and Marketing Manager at Parklea is passionate about environmental initiatives and the vision is to ensure all volume homes can be built for people to enjoy a sustainable, healthy future. “The market really wants to know about viable sustainability. We’re thrilled to be part of a project where we can learn more and offer people what they want. A Zero Energy Home applies simple changes to mainstream volume builders,” said Mr Mills. The SJD Zero Energy Home at Timbertop was planned to meet the needs of an average family household. Through innovative design, clever use of materials, quality construction, and the incorporation of energy generating features, the home meets all of its energy needs all year round. Energy efficiency measures include orienting the house so that it takes advantage of the natural elements to maximise solar power generation and minimise heat loss; installing high grade window glazing; extensive use of insulation; selection of high-efficiency cooking, heating and cooling appliances; and installation of a heat pump for the hot water service. The solar power system comprises a 5KW battery and 17 solar panels to keep running costs down. “By doing all these adjustments, we’ve met zero net carbon, so this house will produce as much energy as it consumes, making it carbon neutral,” says Rod Fitzsimmons, sales manager of SJD Homes. The project has shown that Zero Energy Homes don't have to cost much more than a standard build. “A standard Zero Energy Home might cost

Dandy Rays-es the TAC Cup The Dandenong Stingrays are the 2018 TAC Cup Premiers. After 27 years and five grand final losses, the Stingrays finally claimed their maiden TAC Cup Premiership at IKON Park on Saturday afternoon. With the rampant Oakleigh Chargers standing between them and the trophy, the Rays rose to the occasion when it mattered most. Riley Bowman booted the first goal of the game after a tremendous second effort tackle for which he was rewarded with a shot on goal. Despite the best efforts of Lachlan Young and Daniel Frampton in defence, Oakleigh held a seven-point lead at the first break. The second quarter was when the Rays made their premiership move. Of course, it was co-captain Campbell Hustwaite who led from the front. He was on the bottom of packs, running out of packs and tackling as if his life depended on it. Bailey Williams put through his first major of the day at the four-minute mark, then the speedy Jai Taylor inspired his teammates with a chase down tackle in the middle of the ground, leading to a Toby Bedford goal. One of the key architects of Berwick's back-toback SEFNL premierships, dual premiership coach Stewart Kemperman, has parted ways with the club after just two years in the job. The former Noble Park champion signed on with the club in his first senior coaching role in 2017, and guided the Wickers to back-to-back flags for just the second time in the club's illustrious history just days ago at Edwin Flack Reserve against Narre Warren. Club president Glenn Gambetta confirmed the massive news on Tuesday afternoon to the News after a series of meetings, and said that they have parted ways amicably after discussions with Kemperman about the future direction of the club. Gambetta also confirmed that Rhys Nisbet, the 2015 premiership coach, will coach the club from 2019 as it enters 'AFL Outer East', describing it as a "transition". "Obviously it's a very difficult decision to end Stewart's time at the club, but the original plan was to offer him a two-year contract with the option of a third year," Gambetta said. "The transition from Rhys to Stewart was a smooth one, but we were always aware that Rhys was keen to return to the fold after a twoor-three year hiatus. "Rhys is now fully committed to returning to the fold, he's a Berwick boy through and through, and we're delighted to have him back on board." Gambetta said Kemperman wanted to coach a third year and understood the club's stance, and swiftly denied that there were any issues with Kemperman and the playing group, reiterating that it's all part of the transition back to Nisbet.
