"We need a proper settlement regime in place otherwise people will be destitute. There will be begging in the street, crime will be on the rise - this will be the side effect.

"They can't afford to see a psychiatrist.

Many are disturbed mentally - it's going to be a problem for society."

A lack of affordable housing was the most crucial element, says Asylum Seeker Resource Centre humanitarian director Sherrine Clark.

The ASRC, which receives no government funding and operates on donations, has a $800,000 fund to help pay for people's household rent.

It is stretching beyond budget this year with the ASRC unable to offer further rental help, Ms Clark said.

Greater Dandenong Council is leading a taskforce to help asylum seekers. Mayor Youhorn Chea recently spoke out on concerns for their financial welfare, and health and wellbeing.

A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs recently told Star News that the SRSS program "is not a social welfare program".

"It is designed to provide short-term, tailored support to those who have demonstrated barriers to resolving their immigration status.

"Individuals on a bridging visa with work rights, and who have the capacity to work, are expected to support themselves while their immigration status is being resolved."

A humanitarian crisis looms as asylum seekers in Greater Dandenong were cut from Status Resolution Support Services federal payments in August, advocates warn.

About 140 Victorian-based recipients were cut from income payments in the most recent round.

Many are from Greater Dandenong - Australia's most populous asylum-seeker area that is 2000-strong.

The burden is expected to grow on charities, services, agencies and supporters, with further removals from $35-a-day SRSS payments looming in coming months.

There are also tragic signs that the asylumseeker community is suffering a growing mental toll.

The Afghan Hazara community was recently rocked by the suicide of a male asylum seeker in his late 20s in the South East.

Without family in Australia, his burial was funded by community members on 9 September.

He was remembered with two late asylumseekers - a Tamil man and a Iraqi man - in a vigil outside the State Library the next day.

Three years ago, Afghan Hazara man Kodayar Amini self-immolated in a Dandenong park in apparent fear of being detained in an immigration centre.

"It's happened before, and it's going to happen again," Australian Hazara Federation treasurer John Gulzari said.

"Some of them are already isolated from the community. Many are going to be destitute (without the SRSS payments)."

Australia Day Award nominations now open Nominations are now open for the 2019 Casey Australia Day Awards.

Facebook mugger has second chance A Hampton Park man who used a Facebook buy-and-sell page to lure and violently rob unsuspecting victims has been praised in court for turning around his life.

Mabil Naghoy, 20, pleaded guilty to five robberies in which he and other males ambushed and stole two iPhones and $6220 cash from online buyers and sellers late last year.

Among his victims was a father - responding to a 'Facebook Marketplace' ad selling an iPhone X - met with Naghoy and was bashed in front of his three children on Boxing Day. A 13-year-old girl tried in vain to protect her father during the attack.

The man's primary school age sons, watching from the car were said to be "extremely traumatised" by the event, according to police.

After punching and kicking the man's head, Naghoy grabbed $1200 cash from the car's glovebox in front of the boys.

Naghoy and his associates set up ambushmeetings with victims in Hampton Park, Dandenong, Sunshine West and Melbourne CBD.

They either offered iPhones for sale or responded to sellers' posts on Facebook online.

Naghoy committed the last three robberies - including the Boxing Day assault - while on bail.

He was on a community corrections order at the time.

After his arrest, Naghoy spent 40 days remanded in adult custody.

In February, he pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court and was bailed to a deferred sentence.

During the regime over the past seven months, Naghoy was required to live at his parents' home and to undergo Youth Justice supervision.

He was ordered to report to police three times a week, enrol in education, not associate with co-offenders and obey a night curfew.

On 10 September, defence lawyer Nick Power told Dandenong Magistrates' Court that Naghoy had "certainly engaged well" with Youth Justice, as well as studying and working a job.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen praised Nag-

hoy's "exceptional" performance since the spate of "serious" offending.

"You are somebody described (in a Youth Justice report) as polite, respectful and determined.

"You walk away from this process with your head held high."

In February, Mr Vandersteen noted the "voluminous" "high-end" offending would have been "horrific" for each victim.

He said he had to balance the accused's rehabilitation with protection of the community.

"The purpose of deferral is to have you engage.

"If you engage, if you go back to school, if you stay with your family, don't commit any further offences, then ... you will not return to custody.

"However if you commit a further offence and don't comply with bail conditions, it's likely that you will receive a custodial sentence."

On 11 September, Naghoy was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order with conviction.

Spring in the air for horticultural staff

Fourteen conservation land management students from Chisholm Institute helped the council plant, mulch and beautify Robert Booth Reserve.

The students gained valuable industry experience, while helping spruice up the surrounds of Dandenong Creek.

The activities were part of the council’s Discover Dandenong Creek project.

A female has been assaulted and robbed of her handbag in broad daylight in central Springvale.

The victim was approached from behind by a male as she walked along Balmoral Avenue about 12.30pm on 29 August.

The male has tried to snatch her bag off her shoulder several times.

He then pushed her to the ground and stole her bag.

He ran away along St John's Avenue, where he got into a waiting vehicle.

The robber was described as medium height and build, and wearing a yellow vest.

Servo robbers armed with machete Two masked males armed with a machete have robbed a service station in Springvale.

The pair entered the United servo on Heatherton Road about 9.50 pm on Saturday 8 September.

One of the males stood at the doorway holding a machete, while the other jumped the counter and demanded cash.

The servo attendant handed over a small amount of cash; the robbers left the store on foot.

The pair were wearing dark clothing and dark face masks, police say.

STIs on the rise Sexually-transmissible infections are on an alarming rise in Greater Dandenong, according to official stats.

In the region, the numbers with gonorrhoea are up 191 per cent, syphllis 113 per cent and chlamydia 18 per cent over the past five years.

And most people are not even aware of it.

STIs have been increasing at record rates across Australia over the past decade, says Department of Health and Human Services deputy chief health officer Brett Sutton.

He attributed it to changing sexual behaviours, particularly on social media, dating websites and apps.

"The good news is most (STIs) are curable and all are treatable.

"If left untreated, they can cause long term effects ... including infertility."

The best prevention was to always use a condom, Dr Sutton said.

He urged people to get tested and seek treatment.

Lessons from fire learned

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Fire-fighters are in for a challenging summer, judging by recent devastating fires in Greece and the US, says Dandenong Senior Station Officer Daryl Owen.

On his return from assessing fire damage in Greece, Mr Owen says the Northern Hemisphere's preceding fire season often hinted of what was to come in Australia.

The danger signs are even apparent in drought-stricken northern states, including winter bushfires in NSW. "We get plenty of warning of what the summer is likely to be locally.

"Everything points towards (similar conditions). We're asking residents in Victoria to prepare now."

In Greece, Mr Owen witnessed the aftermath of a 1400-hectare fire in Mati on 23 July that travelled faster than many of the fires in Victoria on Black Saturday, 2009.

the Mati blaze, with many properties incinerated.

"It is difficult talking to families and residents who have just lost everything in a bushfire," Mr Owens said.

"Especially in Greece where the economy is not in good shape. It's a tough time when they

have to decide how to rebuild."

The 15-day operation was Mr Owen's first international mission, away from his wife and daughter.

"It was very similar to going interstate," Mr Owen said.

"The emergency services were very wel-

coming of us, and welcoming of the assistance we could provide."

He was part of an Australian disaster response team focused on rapid damage assessment.

Across the vast fire ground, the team assessed 6279 properties, looking for what buildings at risk of collapse, latent firespots and rescues.

Flying drones equipped by cameras were used for the task, despite being hindered by strong winds. They were still a key tool to comprehensively assess damaged properties, Mr Owen said.

The older concrete-made buildings generally withstood the fires, while newer timber and light-clad constructions were less hardy, Mr Owen said.

It was a tick for the tight building regulations in Victoria's fire zones.

"The primary focus was to assist the Greek community, however the experience gained from such deployments can assist Victoria in learning from such disasters."

Drug user’s ‘blessed’ arrest could just be a life-saver

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A suspended driver with an array of illicit drugs in his car was intercepted by police after driving the wrong way in a slip lane in Cranbourne, a court has heard.

Trevor William Anderson, 30, of Springvale, was spotted driving his Yaris down the oneway slip lane on South Gippsland Highway and Camms Road about 2.24am on 4 May. Police seized about 8 grams of cannabis in separate bags on his person.

In the car were a bag of methamphetamine and a bag of amphetamine, police told Dande-

nong Magistrates' Court on 10 September.

He told police there was "no good enough reason" for his offending.

"Another stupid decision, no reason."

Anderson - who had a lengthy criminal history - was on a County Court community corrections order at the time.

He also pleaded guilty to burglary and theft from a mobile-phone repair business in Springvale on 1 January - prior to the CCO period.

matched his DNA. The CCO, including a drug treatment program, was Anderson's best opportunity to overcome his long-standing drug issues, a defence lawyer told the court.

The police intercept in May was a "blessing in disguise", derailing Anderson's plan to use the seized drugs, the lawyer said.

A County Court judge was judicially monitoring Anderson, was aware of his recent offences and didn't want to interfere with the CCO, the court heard.

in place, according to a judicial monitoring report in July.

Magistrate Julie O'Donnell said she'd "frankly stopped counting" while reading his long criminal history.

"I have to say I'm inclined to jail Mr Anderson immediately for the driving-while-suspended."

However she noted the "positive" judicial monitoring report and that Anderson was "in treatment" before a County Court judge.

Anderson was sentenced to perform 150 hours of unpaid work as part of a concurrent 18-month community corrections order.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A firewood depot, which had been operating without permission in Bangholme's Green Wedge zone, has been hauled over the coals by Greater Dandenong Council.

The 3 Soden Road business's application for a planning permit was rejected by Greater Dandenong councillors on 10 September.

The proposal involved selling solid fuel such as coal, briquettes and firewood, which is within a declared bushfire-prone area.

Objectors opposed the use of B-double semi-trailers up to two times a week. A council report noted that trucks of that size are unable to access the site due to 4.5-tonne load limits on Pillars Road.

It was a case of "putting the cart before the horse", Cr Angela Long said.

"Why would Council do a notice of decision on this application when it's not fully finalised?"

With the support of most councillors, Cr Long moved a motion to reverse the council planner's recommendation to approve the permit.

She argued it was adverse to the Green

Dissenting councillor Timothy Dark said the site was being used for storage only, not for an industrial purpose.

The owner had been required to apply for a permit after Greater Dandenong was aware that it was operating in breach of the planning scheme, Greater Dandenong city planning director Jody Bosman said.

"Now that the application has been refused, Council will commence further enforcement action if the operation does not cease."

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Police are searching for a vandal who attempted to torch a public artwork in central Dandenong.

The In Transit permanent sculpture in Settlers Square, Foster Street was set alight about 11pm on 10 September.

A PSO at the Dandenong railway station across the road spotted the fire and promptly extinguished it.

Greater Dandenong Council’s Paul Kearsley, who is the group manager of Greater Dandenong Business, said it was disappointing that “vandals have treated this much loved piece of public art with such disregard”.

“Artwork such as this is designed to highlight undervalued spaces in the City of Greater Dandenong and create a point of interest for passers-by.

“Thankfully as the work is made from steel and bronze damage to the artwork is negligible.”

In Transit is by artist Martin George and recognises Dandenong as a distribution hub, Mr Kearsley said.

100 years ago 19 September 1918 The Great Ocean Road The Trust which is controlling this movement, have now made an actual start by employing a survey party on the section which is proposed to take in hand first viz, Cape Patten to Lorne (a distance of 18 miles). The whole road when completed is to connect up Warrnambool and Barwon Heads by means of a road running as near to the ocean as the surveyors consider practicable. The road is to be a permanent and lasting memorial to all Victorian soldiers, with memorial bridges over the various streams, so that everyone who drives along this road will be reminded of the brave men who defended our shores. Every position in connection with the construction of the road is to be first offered to the physically fit and suitable returned soldiers,

through the Repatriation department and it is anticipated that when the war is over a large number of suitable men will be returning. The five men, who are now at work in connection with the survey, are all returned soldiers. On arrival at Apollo Bay (the nearest town at present to their work) a public welcome was accorded to them in the public hall, by 300 of the residents.

5 years ago 16 September 2013 Criminal scoop up Violent criminals on the run in Greater Dandenong will attract extra police attention in coming months. The Critical Incidents Response Team (CIRT) last week launched Operation Summoning in Brimbank. It will see crews deployed to six high risk areas across the state including Greater Dandenong to hunt down outstanding offenders actively avoiding apprehension or with a history of violent behaviour. CIRT crews will also help local police target offenders on bail under strict conditions and curfews to ensure they're not breaking the terms.

Slow cooking Maori-style

By Cam Lucadou-Wells You could say that much of NZ Street Food's roaring trade belongs to a line of homesick Kiwi stomachs.

But the Dandenong Market outlet is also a pit-stop for the curious. No other food outlet in the South East offers a hangi straight out of a steaming oven.

Hangi, a Maori cooking tradition, is the definition of slow-cooking.

Traditionally, it is a combination of meat, cabbage and spuds cooked under hot stones in a pit in the ground. There the food stays for hours, cooking moist and tender in a combination of steam and smoke.

Owner Jae Tuhi, a carpenter by trade, designed his own above-land hangi oven, suitable for the kitchen.

He prefers his hangi of chicken, lamb, potatoes topped with thyme stuffing to stew in foil-wrapped juices for up to eight hours. The

By the end, the flavours of each ingredient are absorbed into the other.

It's a treat Mr Tuhi looks forward to every Friday night. Though customers are keen for it anytime, including as a hearty reviver early Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The business started in a food truck in 2015, gained a cult following and has now become a Dandenong fixture.

Cooking for large numbers of people was something Mr Tuhi grew up with.

"A lot of the younger ones don't get to see

our culture.

"I love it. It's a passion."

NZ Street Food's menu includes some other New Zealand favourites - deep fried bread buns filled with hangi-cooked pulled pork.

The fried bread is like a donut, but not so sweet.

"As soon as our people see fried food, they jump on it," Mr Tuhi said.

Also steamed in the hangi is a sweet brownsugar pudding topped in custard.

NZ Street Food also imports seafood from the homeland - such as smoked snapper, as well as fresh abalone (paua) , sea urchin (kina) and mussels.

It stocks 'home-grown' confectionery , chips and other packaged foods, such as L&P soft drink, Rashuns, Munchos and Watties tomato sauce.

In celebration of Mooncake Festival A second instance of dumping that occurred on an early weekday afternoon - while the Red Nose outlet was shut.

Dumped on

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Red Nose Charity's charity bins and outlet have been given its marching orders from Parkmore shopping centre's car park due to a spate of "overflow donations".

Unsightly mounds of dumped goods next to the bins had become a regular "eye-sore", drawing the ire of shoppers at the Keysborough centre.

A recent sample included a clothes dryer, a mattress, a box of soft toys and bags of clothes strewn over about 20 square metres.

Resident Gaye Guest said she was happy to see the bins removed.

"This area had become a rubbish dump daily. An absolute eye-sore and totally unacceptable.

"It's not the operators' fault, it is the lazy residents who think dumping rubbish outside of operation hours is OK." Red Nose - known for its SIDS for Kids charity work - operated a staffed outlet in a shipping container daily at the site.

According to Parkmore, Red Nose sorted through donations each morning. There were regular charity bins available for after-hours donations.

A recent ''overflow'' of donated goods at the Red Nose charity bins.

In a statement, the centre said there had been "extensive feedback from the community" about the "overflow from overnight donations".

"This has been a factor in our decision to request that the charity bins be removed by the end of October 2018.

"We will continue to offer Red Nose alternative opportunities for fund-raising on an ongoing basis."

The centre did not consider the piles to be "illegal dumping".

"We do not consider (the) donations provided to be dumped."

Red Nose was contacted for comment.

Big dry fight Doveton’s own local ’heroes’ are staging an allday music event to pitch in for drought-stricken farmers.

Ruth Murray and Jenny Colvin have organised the Drought Relief Fundraiser to help abate the harrowing impacts of a six-year drought in NSW and Queensland.

Holt MP Anthony Byrne praised Ms Murray and Ms Colvin as two of the “unsung heroes who go above and beyond to make a difference”.

Regularly, the pair had helped others in the lead-up to Christmas, Mr Byrne said.

“Ruth Murray and Jenny Colvin embody the very best of Doveton.”

Funds from the all-day concert will go to the charity Drought Angels, which has assisted more than 8000 farmers with food and stock feed since 2014. Mr Byrne urged people to attend the fundraiser.

“Every dollar helps us keep our Aussie farmers on the land and supports their families and communities wellbeing.

“Too many farmers are losing hope completely and just walking off their properties with nothing or taking their own lives.”

The Drought Relief Fundraiser is at John Pandazopoulos Hall, 78 Power Road, Doveton on Sunday, 7 October, 12pm-6pm. Entry $10.

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Dandenong community leader has been recognised as one of the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Volunteer Champions.

Nika Suwarsih was one of the awardees in the leadership category at a ceremony on 9 September. Over more than a decade, Ms Suwarsih has helped migrant mums and children feel at home in the South East.

From 2013, she aimed to empower women by co-ordinating a multicultural womens program in Dandenong.

It provided free weekly activities including yoga, meditation, dance, relationship workshops, law, parenting skills, employment and laughter therapy.

Ms Suwarsih has been actively involved in a range of festivals and groups including the Indonesian Women’s Friendship Network.

She told Star News that “I’m blessed and very grateful to receive this award”.

“I hope we can build a better future and a better place for each other.”

Aref Ramazani has a passion to capture positive stories in photo and film.

The Dandneong communications graduate just needed to get his foot in the door.

And he got that platform with a threemonth paid internship with video production company Momentary, thanks to a free Centre for Multicultural Youth program.

It was an invaluable learning experience for Mr Ramazani, as well as adding credentials to his CV. At the end, he crafted a short professionalquality film on friend, kickboxer, businessman and humble inspiration Rohullah Paykari.

Both film-maker and muse are young men who left Afghanistan to seek asylum in Australia.

"My big dream is to be a professional filmmaker, to make a documentary about people from refugee backgrounds," Mr Ramazani said.

"I want to make videos that showcase peo-

ple's lives, people in hardship and tough times."

His refugee background made it hard to find a job after he finished his university degree.

He applied for endless jobs without a response. He tried employment workshops, and still no success.

"There's a lot of challenges, especially coming from a refugee background - not only for me, but for other young people as well," Mr Ramazani said.

"There's a lack of language, lack of networks and connections, lack of job searching skills and other issues, such as discrimination."

Momentary founder and creative director Michael Johnston creates videos, specialising in "social impact storytelling".

He welcomed the chance to lend a hand, and help address a "lack of diversity" in the media industry.

Drunk’s abuse off the rails

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drunken commuter has threatened to slit a train driver's throat after forcing the carriage doors open and causing the service to be aborted, a court has heard.

Daniel Joseph Costanzo, of Fawkner, was chastised by a judge in Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 10 September for his "high degree of arrogance" during the incident.

He had prised his way on board by forcing apart the train's closing doors at Dandenong station about 11.12 am on 9 September.

The train continued for several stops up to Springvale railway station. Passengers were ordered off the train, due to Costanzo's act.

Costanzo approached the outside of the

driver's carriage, striking the window and door.

He told the driver: "I'm going to follow you home and slit your throat."

Police arrested Costanzo after he left the station in Lightwood Road, seizing a small amount of cannabis from his pocket.

A defence lawyer told the court that the "alcohol-affected" Costanzo had drank a "fair amount" of red wine while visiting a friend in the Dandenong area.

He had caught the train to go home, and was angry that the train was "put out of commission".

The lawyer argued that Costanzo had no intention to carry out his threat, and had no histo-

ry of violence despite a lengthy criminal record.

He'd "come off" the drug 'ice' as part of a CISP treatment program two years ago.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted the impact on a train driver "doing nothing more than his job".

"There's a high degree of arrogance here. "(Costanzo) disabled the train ... so the driver couldn't go any further.

"Then he threatens someone over his own behaviour."

Mr Vandersteen noted police made no mention of Costanzo appearing drunk.

"If he's alcohol affected like that on a Sunday morning, he's clearly got other issues to deal with."

Costanzo told the court that he "tried to walk away from the situation" after the incident.

"I honestly didn't mean it. I was just mouthing off."

Mr Vandersteen replied: "Well, (the driver) doesn't know that."

Costanzo was placed on a 12-month supervised community correction order.

He was ordered to do 175 hours of unpaid work and drug and alcohol treatment.

He faces unrelated charges including shoplifting at Melbourne Magistrates' Court on 1 November.

Child centre too ‘dangerous’ Plea to find missing commuter

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Traffic concerns have partly led to the scuttling of a proposed child care centre for up to 140 children in Keysborough.

The double-storey centre with 30 on-site parking spaces on the corner of Fa Greater Dandenong's transport department had "no objections" to the estimated traffic movements nor to access to the site in Fabian Court. bian Court and Chapel Road was rejected unanimously by Greater Dandenong councillors at a meeting on 10 September.

The councillors overruled the council's city planning department, which recommended an approval.

In an alternative motion, the proposal was said to be an overdevelopment of the 1592-square metre site.

It would lead to "unacceptable traffic congestion", the motion stated.

Councillor Roz Blades said about 30 resi-

dents at a recent planning meeting raised "dangerous amenity issues".

They alerted the council to "serious" traffic problems in Chapel Road and Sunnyvale Crescent, she said.

Councillor Sean O'Reilly said the section of Chapel Road was "jammed" between Cheltenham Road and Dandenong Bypass.

"The feedback we're getting from residents is they're feeling like they're the meat in the sandwich."

Cr O'Reilly said the battle but not necessarily the war was won by residents.

If the developer appealed, the council would have to defend its decision on planning grounds to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Cr Timothy Dark categorised the proposal as a "poor" application.

He pointed to the congestion that would be caused in quiet Fabian Court.

Police are seeking help to find a 78-year-old man who was last seen at Westall railway station.

Minh Co Duong was spotted getting on a city-bound train at the station about 9.30am on 11 September.

Mr Duong has several medical conditions and may have fallen asleep on the train, police say.

There’s a possibility that he may also have got off the train at Clayton railway station.

Mr Duong is described as about 160 centimetres and wearing a black jacket and hat.

He has a walking frame, is blind on one eye and speaks limited English.

Warning to beware of new treatments Urologist Philip McCahy of the South East Vasectomy Clinic says that there are commonly seen situations that should raise alarm for any patients seeking surgical treatment.

Mr McCahy explained that the first is when a new treatment, be it for cancer, hernias or prostate problems, is announced with great media fanfare.

"This can happen either because said treatment has been presented at a major international meeting or because the sponsor of the treatment has asked for some publicity," he said.

"Most of the time any results are very early and there has been no peer-reviewed publication - the gold standard in medical research.

"There are countless examples of these new wonder treatments that have not stood the test of time and been eventually abandoned. The announcements cause confusion for patients and frustration amongst doctors as patients often ask for the new, unproven treatment."

The second scenario is when a new technology seems to make certain treatments easier for the surgeon.

"The treatment is then enthusiastically taken up by specialists who did not, or could not, use the old technology because they were either not trained or had no special interest in that area.

"In these circumstances, the overall results

of treatment are often worse, with many patients being inappropriately advised by specialists who are not in possession of all the facts.

"As this is not a new treatment, but a variation on existing practice, there is no need for clinical trials and it may take many years before the results of comparison trials are available that may show the new technology has added little, if anything, to patient wellbeing.

"Beware of these sorts of new therapies and if there is any doubt ask for a second opinion."

WINTER FOOD DRIVE BREAKS RECORD IN its third year of operation the Parklea Winter Food Drive is proud to report that the generosity of the local community has helped break last year’s record of 330 kilograms of donations, with 2018 collecting over 500kg of non-perishable food.

This year the Parklea Winter Food Drive extended its reach by adding new collection points in more locations throughout Cardinia Shire, where local residents were able to support their neighbourhood throughout winter.

"The huge increase in donations is thanks in part to the local businesses who put their hands up and volunteered to be a collection point for the food drive,” said Parklea sales and marketing manager Jarod Mills.

“We are extremely grateful that they supported this program, an initiative that Parklea is so proud to deliver."

Food donations will be distributed via The 4Cs, a Pakenham-based charity that supports local families and individuals with food, shelter, counselling, training and financial relief.

Parklea thanked Club Officer, Montessori Beginnings Child Care at Timbertop Estate, Cardinia Life (Aligned Leisure), Arena Cafe at Arena Shopping Centre, and Timbertop Sales Suite, for supporting the initiative and opening up their businesses to be a collection point.

The Winter Food Drive is one of Parklea's many initiatives to help improve the quality of life of those living in and around the community.

In 2018 the Christmas Gift Drive is on again and will collect gifts to be provided to disadvantaged children in the Cardinia Shire.

The headline event Little Day Out at Ross Reserve on Sunday 30 September will be akin to a magical wonderland, including camel rides, a 9D cinema and magicians.

It will also feature The Animals of Magical Mountains Show, a dragon jumping castle and a gator rollercoaster.

The Shorter Cuts Film Festival will screen films by local school students at Harmony Square on Tuesday 25 September.

Deckchair movies with a magic or fantasy theme will be screened each weekday through the festival.

2018 Greater Dandenong Mayor Cr Youhorn Chea said the festival appealed to people of all ages and encouraged children to explore their creative side.

"This festival is held during the school holidays and it is the perfect way to keep the children entertained in a fun and imaginative way."

The festival's regular characters Mona Beeza, Birdtoven, Bob the Reader and Healthy Shelby also return.

History beckons for the Stingrays

On Saturday, 22 September at IKON Park, the Dandenong Stingrays will take on the Oakleigh Chargers for the 2018 TAC Cup premiership. The Rays will be chasing the club’s maiden TAC Cup premiership in what will be Craig Black’s final game as coach, as he will be joining Collingwood next year in a development role.

Whilst the Stingrays will enter the grand final having not lost a game since April, the Chargers present a formidable challenge having won their last three games - two of which were win-or-go-home finals - by 90 points or more. The Rays have been the best and most consistent side all year - highlighted by their 18-1 season record and in their two finals have shown no signs of complacency; defeating the Rebels by

110 points and the Dragons by 42 points on Saturday. The Chargers’ season record of 125-1 showcases that they can be beaten, but they have had an array of stars come back to TAC Cup football late in the season after the completion of school football and have simply dominated opponents when at full strength. They sent a warning sign to the Rays on Saturday, completely dominating the second-placed Gippsland Power to earn a spot in the big dance with a 93-point win.

The edge for the Rays is their connection - they have played together all season and while the Chargers have rushed back stars lately, Dandenong’s bond and willingness to work for one another is undeniable.

“It’s been a great year,” Stingrays talent manager Mark Wheeler said after Saturday’s preliminary final win.

“This group is very tight and focused - they

know what they want to achieve together.

Now we have seven days to prepare for the biggest day for the club.”

The midfield battle will be absolutely crucial. Dandenong will need the likes of captain Campbell Hustwaite, Jai Taylor, Toby Bedford and Sam Fletcher to stand up.

Dandenong’s backline has been tremendous in 2018, smothering opponents and working as one to defend first and then catapult forward. Matthew Cumming, Daniel Frampton, Matthew Cottrell, Matthew Gahan and Will Hamill will undoubtedly have their hands full as they attempt to slow the Chargers rampaging attack. The Rays’ two dominant bigs; Bailey Williams and Riley Bowman loom as x-factors. If they can take the game by the scruff of the neck, Dandenong will be well placed to claim its first ever TAC Cup title.

The Doveton Eagles’ quest for backto-back premierships failed at the final hurdle; unable to keep up with Highett as they ran away with the Southern Football League Division 2 premiership courtesy of a dominant final quarter.

In tough and windy conditions, both teams failed to make the most of their opportunities in a wasteful first half in front of goal. Just five goals had been kicked and a whopping 26 behinds, with Highett 2.16 (28) level with Doveton 3.10 (28) at half time.

The third term was more of the same as neither team took a backwards step and contested football was the order of the day.

Doveton star Michael Callinan kicked his side’s only goal of the term - an early major that put the Eagles up by five points.

Highett responded though and despite having kicked fewer goals than Doveton, held a slender one-point lead, 3.20 (38) to 4.13 (37), with a quarter to play.

With the crowd at Jack Barker Oval riding every bump, and with premiership glory on the line, it was Highett which powered home and finally kicked truly in front of goal.

Having kicked just three goals - and 20 behinds - in three quarters, Highett turned on the afterburners and kicked four goals in a premiership-winning fourth quarter performance.

Doveton was simply overrun as Highett held the Eagles goalless and claimed the flag with a 7.22 (64) to 4.16 (40) win.

It was a disappointing way to end a season of tremendous growth that was full of highs - including the minor premiership - for the Eagles.

In their first season in Division 2 after claiming the Division 3 premiership last season, the Eagles proved they belong at the level. Although they ultimately fell on the biggest day of the year, a 16-2 home and away season record was a mighty effort.

The ever-consistent workhorse that is Michael Callinan was best for the Eagles, while Travis Graeske, Jarrod O’Neill and Nick Battle battled valiantly.

Highett’s Tom Brown was sublime in a dynamic display that included a goal, while Yianni Pasialis and Harry O’Neill played vital roles. Chris Langdon was the game’s only multiple goal scorer with two key goals that helped get his team over the line.

Dandenong extinguishes the Dragons’ puff

By Hayley Wildes In a season that has seen the Dandenong Stingrays take all before them, it came down to 50 minutes of football that stood between them and a TAC Cup grand final berth.

Taking on the Sandringham Dragons in a preliminary final at IKON Park on Saturday afternoon, neither team was able to break away in a hard-fought opening half of football.

Classy forward Ned Cahill got Dandenong on the board in the first quarter with a snap and after tearing apart last week’s final against the Rebels, Cahill’s fine form continued.

He followed up that goal with an assist to Bailey Williams, who slotted a set shot to give the Rays a six-point quarter time lead.

After a slow start to the second quarter, it was Foot with help from Toby Bedford, who clicked the Rays into gear with a fine goal.

Cahill has risen to the occasion at the business end of the season.

He used his smothering pressure to earn a holding the ball free kick and he kicked truly to level the scores.

In the space of three minutes, the ever-dangerous Bedford put his mark on the game with two quick goals.

A late goal to Sandringham was disappointing, but Dandenong still held a half time lead; 6.3 (39) to 5.3 (33).

The third quarter is often known as the premiership quarter, and on Saturday it was a 25-minute patch of football that earned the Rays the right to play off in the grand final a week later.

Bedford once again answered the call.

When he put through the Rays’ first major of the second half and it started a match-winning run for the side.

A five-goal to one term - including backto-back majors to Jai Taylor - had Dandenong

well in control at the final break, 11.7 (73) to 6.3 (39).

It was the Rays’ intense pressure and work rate that finally broke the Dragons with the likes of captain Campbell Hustwaite, Sam Fletcher and Bedford running riot around the ball.

Despite holding a lead, the job wasn’t done.

The Stingrays continued to work hard and won the fourth quarter as they booked their ticket to the big dance with a 14.11 (95) to 8.5 (53) win.

Hustwaite was sublime with a game-high 27 disposals and nine clearances. Will Hamill’s game stood out as he drove Dandenong forward on many occasions. Williams, Bedford (three goals each) and Cahill (two goals) led the forward pack, while Fletcher and Riley Bowman also impressed.

Brandon’s golden season

By Hayley Wildes Brandon Barnes is the best striker in the country outside of the A-League.

That's a statement that has floated around for a couple of years, and after a dominant 2018 season, it's hard to argue against it.

After dominating the National Premier League (NPL) Vic 2 in 2016 and 2017, Barnes had a point to prove this year.

With the Dandenong Thunder having been promoted to the NPL Vic - the highest level of soccer in the state - the English goal-scoring dynamo blew the competition away.

After claiming back-to-back NPL Vic 2 Golden Boot's (competition's leading goal scorer) in 2016-2017, he made it a hat-trick in 2018 by running away with the award in the top division.

A remarkable season saw him score 22 goals - six more than his nearest rival. What makes his prestigious Golden Boot win even more incredible is the fact that Barnes missed four games due to injury throughout the season.

Since joining the club for the 2016 season, Barnes scored a ridiculous 99 goals in 78 games.

Settling into the higher division and claiming the Golden Boot is something that Barnes took in his stride.

"It was something that I always knew I could do and I've always had self-belief which is important," he said.

"With the start to the season that we had and personally not scoring in the first six rounds, being so far behind to begin with, and then to finish six goals clear, it was a great achievement.

"I set a target before the season started of between 10 to 15 goals and as soon as I went past that point, I felt personally that I was flying and they just kept coming.

"It's a great personal achievement, but it goes without saying that it takes the hard work of everyone on the team to get me in a position to score, so a lot of credit goes out to my teammates."

It was a roller-coaster of a season for Dandenong. They didn't claim their first win until Round 7 and there was a coaching change halfway through the season, but the team rallied together and finished the season in eighth - just two points out of the finals.

Barnes talked about the season and challenges faced by everyone at the Thunder.

"The season was a bit up and down for everyone involved, but overall, I think it finished to be a good season considering the position we were in at the start of the season," he said.

"I think everyone was delighted with how far we came and pretty proud of ourselves to see where we finished up."

Despite an indifferent season, the Thunder finished their season on a high note, with a thrilling last-minute 2-1 win over the Melbourne Knights.

And as if the season was going to finish any other way, it was a 90th minute Barnes goal that claimed the comeback win on the road.

"It was good to end the season on a bit of a high with three points and the win," he said.

"Obviously there were a few hiccups early in the season, but as soon as Veton - obviously he is a club legend - took on the role, everyone already respected him and believed in what he could do, so that made our group that bit stronger," he said.

"Even with Veton being a bit of a rookie coach, we all stuck by him and I think he did an excellent job with the boys in his first half year of coaching."

Barnes is a wizard on the pitch and Thunder fans often rise as one when he gets some space to work in, knowing that something special might be just around the corner.

In a season filled with outrageous highlights, Barnes points to the hat-trick against Pascoe Vale in May as his personal favourite.

"I wouldn't have a favourite goal, but there was a game where I scored three goals against Pascoe Vale," he said.

"We were down to 10 men and we ended up winning 3-2 and those three goals probably go down as the most memorable of the season and obviously getting the win as well made it even better."

As the season progressed, opposition defences tried everything to stop Barnes, but it mattered little as he scored his 22 goals in the final 16 games of the season.

With stats and highlights like his, the sky is the limit for Barnes and he believes he has what it takes to make it to the A-League.

"I think that again comes back to me having a bit of self-belief and pushing myself to limits where I feel even more challenged. If that's the A-League or back overseas, I'm willing to put in the hard work to get to wherever I can to improve my football career," he said.

"Being a visa player and having the visa rule with the A-League, that's maybe stopping me a little bit but I'm going to keep working hard, keep believing and hopefully my time will come.

"When they're ready, I'll be ready."

Going up a division wasn't a worry for Barnes, who sliced through opposition defences all season.

The arrival of the 10th generation, Civic in mid-2016 sparked a significant revival, with sales more than doubling in 2017, albeit from a relatively low base. The new Civic hatchback, always the biggest seller in Australia, went on sale until March 2017. Our test here is of the topline sedan, we will follow up with a hatchback soon.

Unlike the previous Civic model where hatches were built in Britain and sedans in Thailand, all Australian Gen-10 Honda Civics now come from a new Honda factory in Thailand.

Honda Civic comes in six variants, VTi, VTiS, VTi-L, RS, VTi-LX and the high-performance Type-R. All are available as either a sedan or hatch with the exception of the Type-R which is hatch-only. We’ll concentrate on the standard variants in this review and get into the hot hatch at a later date.

Both sedan and hatch have the coupe-like profile that’s clearly aimed at attracting younger and less conservative older buyers to the Honda brand.

The Honda family grille is flanked by narrow headlight clusters that sit above large honeycombed air intakes. Depending on the model, the headlights feature either sharp high-tech LED headlights or projector halogen bulbs. All models have LED daytime running lights at the upper edge of the headlights.
