Cardinia Shire bombarded Scott Morrison with a congestion-busting wish list during the Prime Minister's tour of Pakenham - his first visit to Victoria since seizing the top job.

Escorted by Latrobe MP Jason Wood on Friday 7 September, Mr Morrison examined traffic at the bustling McGregor Road level crossing.

It came weeks after the launch of Star News Group's Unblock the Gridlock campaign, urging both tiers of government to invest in the south east's gridlocked road infrastructure.

In the heart of Pakenham, Council General Manager of Assets and Services Mike Ellis approached the PM, reeling off a list of the region's most egregious arterials.

"Prime Minister, there's quite a number of issues as you come through the growth corridor and a lot relate to level crossings," Mr Ellis said.

"This road here, McGregor Road, is a major arterial road as it connects to the Freeway and the Princes Highway.

"Vehicles come in, get effectively logged down here and you get the bank up of vehicles that go right back to the bypass and it takes people 10-15 minutes who reside here to get into town.

"We've got rail level crossings at McGregor and Cardinia Road and to the east of Racecourse Road we've got the stabling yards being built.

"When they are up and running people will be waiting at the level crossing for 35 minutes of every hour."

In response, Mr Morrison admitted that as a Sydneysider he was not attuned to Melbourne's rail crossing issues.

"This is why I'm very keen to have a Melbourne set of eyes to keep tabs on what's happening here."

He repeated the phrase "congestion busting" a number of times as he spoke about the pressure of Pakenham's traffic gridlock as one of Melbourne's growth corridors.

It comes after the State Government undertook a highly-publicised level crossing removal at Overton Road, Frankston - despite it accommodating just 4000 cars per day when the project was announced in 2016.

McGregor Road, which has not been upgraded in decades, yielded a daily traffic count of 12,000.

During his visit, Mr Morrison also spruiked the second stage of the long-awaited Monash Freeway upgrade, describing the thoroughfare as a "parking lot " and reflected on the region's burgeoning gang crisis.

"The only thing I get frustrated with, particularly around the Monash, is when you make the commitment in the budget to get stuff done and then there are just delays and delays," he told Star News.

"As for crime, all cities have their challenges with communities, Sydney we have our challenges, but we don't seem to have the problems that exist here in this part of Melbourne.

"At the end of the day it's the responsibility of the State Government."

During a media event in Frankston later that day, the PM hinted to reporters about the possibility of a "congestion-busting" announcement.

"We were looking at that Pakenham corridor, which is another big challenge for Melbourne," he told reporters.

Woodworking is a fine gift Bob Blaker, who has been a Berwick Woodworkers Club member, for several years is also a fine leather-worker and has made several saddles for the club’s rocking horses.

Seeing as Bob will not accept payment for the saddles Pat Mahoney made a rocking horse as a gift for Bob. In turn, Bob, who has been receiving treatment for cancer, decided he would like to donate the horse to the Box Hill Cricket Club, to be used as a fund raiser for its Jane McGrath Day. This is a day when all the cricket club members wear pink hats and play with pink stumps. Funds raised are for the Jane McGrath Foundation.

The horse was duly presented to the president of the Box Hill Cricket Club, Andrew Minta, at morning tea in the Berwick Woodworkers' club-room at the Old Cheese Factory in Berwick on Wednesday 5 September.

Over the years the Berwick Woodworkers Club has donated thousands of well-crafted toys to several of the local welfare groups.

The toys are given away in late November each year in order that the different organisations can get them sorted and ready for their Christmas needs.

Facebook mugger grabs second chance from magistrate

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hampton Park man who used a Facebook buy-and-sell page to lure and violently rob unsuspecting victims has been praised in court for turning around his life.

Mabil Naghoy, 20, pleaded guilty to five robberies in which he and other males ambushed and stole two iPhones and $6220 cash from online buyers and sellers late last year.

Among his victims was a father - responding to a 'Facebook Marketplace' ad selling an iPhone X - met with Naghoy and was bashed in front of his three children on Boxing Day. A 13-year-old girl tried in vain to protect her father during the attack.

The man's primary school age sons, watching from the car were said to be "extremely traumatised" by the event, according to police.

After punching and kicking the man's head, Naghoy grabbed $1200 cash from the car's glovebox in front of the boys.

Naghoy and his associates set up ambushmeetings with victims in Hampton Park, Dandenong, Sunshine West and Melbourne CBD. They either offered iPhones for sale or responded to sellers' posts on Facebook online.

Naghoy committed the last three robberies - including the Boxing Day assault - while on bail.

He was on a community corrections order at the time.

After his arrest, Naghoy spent 40 days remanded in adult custody.

In February, he pleaded guilty at Dandenong Magistrates' Court and was bailed to a deferred sentence.

During the regime over the past seven months, Naghoy was required to live at his parents' home and to undergo Youth Justice supervision.

He was ordered to report to police three times a week, enrol in education, not associate with co-offenders and obey a night curfew.

On 10 September, defence lawyer Nick Power told Dandenong Magistrates' Court that Naghoy had "certainly engaged well" with Youth Justice, as well as studying and working a job.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen praised Naghoy's "exceptional" performance since the spate of "serious" offending.

"You are somebody described (in a Youth Justice report) as polite, respectful and determined.

"You walk away from this process with your

head held high."

In February, Mr Vandersteen noted the "voluminous" "high-end" offending would have been "horrific" for each victim.

He said he had to balance the accused's rehabilitation with protection of the community.

"The purpose of deferral is to have you engage.

"If you engage, if you go back to school, if you stay with your family, don't commit any further offences, then ... you will not return to custody.

"However if you commit a further offence and don't comply with bail conditions, it's likely that you will receive a custodial sentence."

On 11 September, Naghoy was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order with conviction.

Fake money fraud Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested two people following an investigation into the alleged manufacturing and use of counterfeit notes.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a Berwick address this on 6 September and

seized items including counterfeit notes, a credit card and electrical equipment.

A man and woman were arrested at the scene. The 41-year-old Berwick man was charged with 23 counts of obtain property by deception. He appeared at Dandenong Mag-

istrates' Court today and has been bailed to reappear on 13 September.

A 39-year-old Berwick woman was charged with four counts of obtain property by deception and has been bailed to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 9 November.

Where there’s a wheel there’s a way

By Jessica Anstice Berwick's Dale Sheppard will be pushing his wheelchair in the 42km Melbourne Marathon on 14 October.

Mr Sheppard's goal is to raise $200,000 for the Starlight Children's Foundation (Starlight), an organisation close to his heart that brightens the lives of seriously ill children and their families. He aims to grant 30 wishes for 30 families.

In 1994, Starlight Foundation granted Mr Sheppard's ill brother a Starlight Wish and sent the family on a holiday, where they were all able to escape the pain of hospital treatments and just have fun.

"It all started with a joking conversation with some friends and I said "I reckon I could

push it" their response was "well on then!"" Mr Sheppard said.

"So not ever wanting to back down from a challenge I registered the next day to complete the full 42km Melbourne Marathon.

"A marathon is one of those things that I want to be able to say I've done. It's a long way but I've trained really hard since January."

Starlight helped the Sheppard family to see that no matter how hard life can be there's always something to smile about.

"There are a lot of families in the midst of challenging times and with a Starlight Wish get the opportunity to create memories that last and shift focus from hardships to fun and laughter," he said.

"If I can make this happen the 42km is really going to be worth it.

"30 Wishes for 30 Families can only happen if we all work together. If we all do a little - we will get a lot done."

Mr Sheppard broke his neck in 1997 and has since - been a quadriplegic.

"The marathon is going to be a massive challenge but I'm up for a challenge," he said.

"I'm looking forward to sharing the marathon with my mate Matt Farmilo, who with his wife Andrea were the two who issued the challenge and sharing memories with the people who have supported me during my training.

"When I complete the marathon I think I will feel happy, sad and probably completely stuffed. But to know families will be receiving wishes will fill my heart with joy."

Jail for bikie gunman

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Hells Angels bikie gang member who shot two men in the car park of Hampton Park Tavern will be deported after serving at least six years in jail.

Vince Tominiko, 26, of Hampton Park, shot one victim in the buttocks and the other into his lower abdomen at point blank range during a relative's party early on 19 November 2017.

He was sentenced at the Victorian County Court on 7 September for intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence, intentionally causing injury and possessing an unregistered handgun.

The two victims - who were brothers aged 27 and 21 - were among a group of nine standing in the car park about 12.45am, the court heard.

A male punched one of the victims in the head. Tominiko produced a firearm - believed to be a cut-down 0.22 calibre rifle - and shot the victim in the buttocks. At one stage, Tominiko fended off a woman who tried to restrain him. He walked to the second victim and shot him twice.

After the first shot, another male dragged the second victim to ground, kicked him and stomped on his head. Tominiko then shot the second victim in the lower abdomen at pointblank range. Both brothers were taken to The Alfred hospital by ambulance.

In sentencing on 7 September, Judge Susan Pullen noted the second victim had suffered considerably since life-saving surgery to repair part of his wounded bowel. The victim faced mounting medical and travel costs for rehabilitation. He suffered nerve damage, a fractured pelvis, and nightmares - and had since been unable to work, Judge Pullen noted.

Tominiko told police he acted in self-defence, but did not pursue that argument in court. He argued there had been "some sort of issue" at the tavern's bar that carried onto the car park, but was unable to prove the victims provoked him, Judge Pullen noted.

Judge Pullen said she was concerned about Tominiko's "likelihood of reoffending" and the "extent of your remorse".

He'd been expelled from at least four schools due to fighting. Being part of the Hells Angels had encouraged his "tough guy" mentality, a psychological report to the court stated.

"You have a number of unresolved issues.

Until you address them and change your attitude towards violence and what is acceptable behaviour, I remain concerned for the members of the community."

He also pleaded guilty to disqualified driving on the night of the shooting. t the time, Tominiko was on a community corrections order for trafficking meth and hindering and resisting police, as well as on bail for alleged affray and intentionally causing injury.

The Department of Immigration and Border Control had cancelled the New Zealand-born Tominiko's visa in May. He would be deported after his time in custody, the court heard.

Tominiko was jailed for up to eight years, four months and 49 days, with a non-parole period of six years. He had served 292 days in pre-sentence custody.

With Carmen Williams, Narre Warren entrepreneur

What is something people don't know about you?

Nine years ago I shaved off all of my long blonde hair. I raised money but that was not my primary motivation. I was always known as 'the girl with the long blond hair' so in my quest for self-discovery I shaved my hair to ponder the questions about who I would be if I didn't have long blond hair anymore. Spoiler alert... I was the same Carmen I always was, but now I could feel wind on my head. The responses by others around me were fascinating.

Some people mourned the loss of my hair, others told me that I was brave and children were curious and wanted to approach me (but were advised by their parents not to).

What was your most memorable moment?

Having my children was very memorable.

With my first, I had a ceaser and was a bit out of it in the recovery room, when I looked up and I thought 'why is he holding a blanket in his arms?!' and then I realised that there was a baby in it! With my second I remember her being placed on my chest and her big eyes taking it all in.

What's the best thing about being a mum?

The constant reminder to stay in the moment and be fascinated by everything around me.

And cuddles too.

What is your favourite movie?

I don't have one. I don't watch many movies and don't watch any movies more than once.

Although if I do want some escapism, I'm happy to sit down to a comedy, drama or action movie.

If you were PM for a day, what would you do?

This one is hard because I understand that change in a democracy takes time and I don't think that I could have a huge impact in one day. The best way to leverage the position for one day would be to listen to people's perspectives and information that I would only have access to as a PM, synthesis this, put my two cents in and then share these insights with the lead-

ership that would take over the next day and where appropriate, the Australian population via responsible (non-sensationalist) reporters.

At school I...... was uncoordinated. I never skipped rope or did handstands. I am changing that now. I can now skip rope and am working on double unders and handstand push ups.

Favourite holiday spot in Australia?

Anywhere with a beach or a mountain and not too many people.

Which six dinner guests dead or alive, would you invite to dinner?

Just my mum.

What's your favourite book?

I love books and read voraciously. I don't think I can pin it down to one. One that rocked my world recently is The Obstacle is the Way. Best concert you have been to?

The one in my living room where we put on loud music and dance around like crazy.

THREE ‌ Tips to getting a good night's sleep

Start calming your mind and body in the afternoon Tiring yourself through exercise will help but try to do it in the first half of the day. Four to six hours before bed, limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine and nicotine and two hours before bed, avoid using your electronic devices.

Be consistent around bedtime Avoid napping during the day, develop a bedtime routine and try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day (even on weekends) and keep your bed for sleeping only; don't read, watch TV or use your phone in bed.

Get out of bed if you can't sleep If you haven't been able to sleep after 20 minutes, get up and do something boring in dim light until you're tired and then try again. And repeat as often as needed. Write down any thoughts you're stuck on in a notepad to get them out of your head.

Fundraiser launch to help

By Jessica Anstice Narre Warren woman Kelly Warren was diagnosed with cervical cancer 12 weeks ago - a devastating shock to her, her husband and their five children.

There was no chance this disease was going to get in the way of her continuing to run her very own charity, BK 2 Basics.

Everyday her charity offers bread and nonperishables to families suffering hardship in her community and beyond.

Twice sometimes three times a week she also offers fresh fruit and veg.

"I first met Kelly when my husband had his third knee replacement and times had got tough, I have kept in constant contact with Bk 2 Basics and help when I can," Sarah Bateman said.

"When word got out about this diagnosis you would think it would knock you down, but no, she's continuing with her street family and helping the local community with bakery items ev-

ery day and the food hampers twice a week and she's being there for her incredible family."

Ms Bateman told Ms Warren she had contacted the Star News Group for a story, in her response Ms Warren said, "Seriously we are all good.

"Remember it's not and never about me it's about the people we help. There is always someone worse off."

She continued to say, "Ladies, I had my one and only pap smear when I was 15. I am now 47.

I was scared of a pap smear, I was embarrassed.

Don't be a cry baby like me. Go and get that pap smear, stand up, stand tall and stand proud. If you’re due or are a complete idiot like me go and get checked."

Being a New Zealand citizen unfortunately the family aren't entitled to financial benefits.

Ms Warren has 56 days of full on treatment, six weeks of daily radiation and six days of chemotherapy followed by two weeks of brachytherapy.

Berwick dreams a little dream for their local families St John of God Berwick Hospital (SJGBH) is inviting the local community to help make wishes come true for local families.

The Dream A Little Dream program has been especially designed to grant a wish to palliative patients and their loved ones. The hospital's palliative care unit cares for patients from diagnosis of a life limiting illness to the end of life. Sadly, these patients range in age.

Some are very young, others are parents of young children, there are grandparents, great grandparents and those who are lonely and alone.

The new program encourages these patients to tap into their inner child to dream and see the realisation of an unfulfilled desire. The granting of their wish is intended to bring some happiness at a difficult time, bring

smiles to sad faces and make dreams a reality.

The hospital's team of nurses, doctors and supporting caregivers are experienced at offering excellence in clinical care and medical support to palliative patients of all ages. The pastoral practitioners also provide emotional assistance.

However, SJGBH knows that with the assistance of the local community, they can go one step further.

Businesses, suppliers and individuals are invited to offer their services and join the Dream Team- a database of generous people who have pre-registered their interest to make dreams come true.

The hospital will call on these compassionate people as patient wishes demand. Some-

times, depending on the patient's condition, this can mean a rapid response.

An initial menu of suggested wishes has been created as the program launches but the hospital anticipates growing and enhancing the selection.

Some of these hospital-based dreams include a professional photo shoot for the family along with makeup and hair, a family dinner party, a romantic dinner for two, pamper treatment or massage.

There is even the option for the patient to create their own little dream.

A recent patient was a passionate supporter of the Melbourne Football Club and the hospital organised a visit from ex-player Russell Robertson.

It is hoped that the community will dream big and initiate additional ideas and services to offer dreams, experiences and gifts to patients and their loved ones of all ages.

In order to make this program a success, the hospital is asking the community to join them by considering two options: 1. Join the Dream Team by offering their services to make dreams come true. To register on the database, please email dreamteam.berwick@sjog.org.au.

An Australian "cultural icon" was the star attraction at Casey Grange Village on Wednesday 5 September when the 2018 Melbourne Cup paid a visit.

The $200,000 cup, which was in Cranbourne as part of the Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour, was escorted into the village clubhouse by 1959 Caulfield Cup winning jockey Trevor Dyer. It was soon surrounded by people keen for a photograph or a selfie.

In the lead up to the running of the 2018 carnival, the cup will visit 37 destinations in five countries including, for the first time, the UK, Ireland and Seoul, where it will be present for the Korean Cup. "It is really about taking the cup to the people," said tour organiser Joe McGrath.

Cup Ambassador Keith Hillier, who has enjoyed a long career as a racing writer and broadcaster, said the tour was a rare opportunity for people to view the Melbourne Cup up close and even hold the famous trophy.

"It is the most famous trophy in Australia. It is a cultural icon," Mr Hillier said.

He said the cup was called a "loving" cup because of its three handle design, representing the owner, trainer and jockey.

"People love talking about the Melbourne Cup and they always have a memory to share.

People will tell me stories about when they were 15 and took a day off school and backed a winner," Mr Hillier said.

Mr McGrath paid tribute to Cranbourne's rich racing history including the area's association with jockey Pat Hyland who rode What a Nuisance to victory in the 1985 Melbourne Cup.

Kokoda tests Berwick men Berwick's Michael Molloy and David Mounsey as part of the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) have just completed the most physically and mentally challenging trek along the 96km Kokoda Track which started at Owers Corner finishing at Kokoda Village seven days later, in memory of our World War II Australian Diggers.

This gruelling challenge had 18 trekkers and 22 porters (Fuzzy Wuzzies) complete the journey.

The Fuzzy Wuzzies were a necessary part in helping the men complete the trek as they carried their backpacks, set up their tents at the end of the day, and navigated them up and down the treacherous tracks, holding them and picking them up off the track when we fell over.

"Most of these porters walked in bare feet like they did when they helped our World War II diggers who were injured on the track," Mr Molloy said.

"A few of us trekkers gave our hiking boots

to the Fuzzy Wuzzies at the end of our journey to help them out, as they would never be able to buy their own.

"To be one of these porters is like a badge of honour and it was a privilege to walk with them as they helped us out."

On day six of the trek the two men were descending onto a river in monsoonal rain when a landslide started on the hill they were about to climb. There were trees, logs and rocks tumbling down the hillside into the river taking everything with it, but the downside was that they all needed to get through this mess.

Very quickly all of the Fuzzy Wuzzies chopped up trees and secured ropes to try and make their passing a safe one, because there was no turning back.

These guys made a human chain and safely escorted everyone through the fallen trees, mud, debris and raging torrent to safer ground.

"It wasn't the most comfortable thing I have experienced in my life time but you move

a bit quicker when the adrenalin kicks in," Mr Molloy said.

"How the locals performed displayed true heroism and would have duplicated how they looked after our predecessors fighting in the war.

"Nothing was ever too much for these porters as they protected us along the track."

In finishing, on behalf of the AFA, 11 trekkers on this Kokoda Pilgrimage have raised nearly $115,000 on behalf of four charities namely Legacy, The Black Dog institute, MS Organisation and the Make a Wish Foundation.

Simon plans gruelling trek to help end family violence Local business owner Simon Bennett will undertake the gruelling Kokoda Track in October to support ending family violence within the community.

Funds raised from the trip will go to Windermere Child and Family Services which provides family violence prevention and early intervention services in Melbourne’s south east.

Simon, the owner of Grill’d in Fountain Gate, is part of a team of 26 who have signed up to trek Kokoda and raise funds for Windermere. The team includes Simon’s brother-inlaw and nephew.

“Violence of any kind is terrible but violence within the family is even more insidious. A home should be a place where everyone

feels secure and safe, for that to be a place of emotional and physical violence goes against everyone's values and must be stopped,” says Simon.

Simon is looking forward to being challenged and learning more about the history of Kokoda.

“I've wanted to trek Kokoda for many years. Once the opportunity presented itself I jumped at it. To do it with family and friends is a bonus,” he says.

Simon says he has been enjoying the challenge of preparing for Kokoda. His training involves completing long treks on steep terrain.

“I've just recently completed the 3 Capes Track in Tasmania. I've started to complete more

“I want to be part of the solution to fix family violence problems and donating to Windermere’s cause is a small part I and my Grill'd Fountain Gate business can play to effect change,” says Simon.

Last year Windermere provided counselling to 552 families and children experiencing trauma associated with sexual assault or family violence in Melbourne’s south east. That is over ten families every week.

School’s gift set to grow Berwick Chase Primary School will receive $1000 in funding as a recipient of the 2018 Stockland CARE Grants program to purchase gardening equipment for the establishment of a new student group with a green focus.

The grant has been awarded on behalf of Stockland's Edgebrook community in Clyde and will help the school to establish 'The Green Team', a group of students who will be responsible for educating the school community on how to care for the local environment.

The Green Team will also design and create a special anniversary garden to celebrate the

school's 10th anniversary this year.

Funds from the grant will be used to buy equipment including a green house, wheelie bins, gloves, pick up tools, high-visibility vests, seedling trays, seedlings, cultivation tables and raised garden beds.

Now in its fifth year, the Stockland CARE Grants program has donated over $1million to more than 1000 community groups across Australia.

More than $270,000 has been awarded to almost 300 local organisations this year alone.

The money assists with the delivery of community-led programs and services which are aimed at creating more inclusive and engaging neighbourhoods.

Mike Davis, General Manager for Stockland Victoria, said local organisations were the backbone of healthy communities and the Stockland CARE Grants helped to support a wide range of programs and opportunities.

"We are thrilled to be able to support these organisations with funding as thriving communities are built on the efforts of people working tirelessly behind the scenes to help

local residents through a range of different services," Mr Davis said.

"During the application process each group demonstrated how they would use the grant.

We're looking forward to seeing their funding being put to good use."

Michael Rosmarin, Chief Operating Officer at Stockland, said the program was designed to acknowledge the dedication and commitment of community groups whose valued work was an essential part of creating thriving communities.

Unloved heritage site ‘devaluing homes’

By Jessica Anstice Concerned residents of Alarah Estate in Cranbourne West are urging the City of Casey to start maintaining the poor appearance of a heritage listed property located nearby their homes.

The heritage listed property, located between City Vista Circuit and Ercildoune Court, is a neglected dilapidated house with broken windows, shattered glass and rusty metal around the property.

Resident Jennifer Fitzsimmons said when the development of Alarah Estate was tendered by Wolfdene it included a proposal to restore the house and landscape the property into a communal area.

The property was handed back to the council around three years ago.

"Nothing besides securing the house from intruders has been done for over five years," Ms Fitzsimmons said.

"This has affected the overall appeal of the estate as it lacks this integral community infrastructure and affected the value of the proper-

ties immediately surrounding the park.

"More than being an eyesore, I believe this is an OHS concern particularly since this is meant to be a park where children play."

Ms Fitzsimmons said many of the residents purchased their properties due to its view of the park and advertised development of the park.

"However residents only have a view of a paddock and a dilapidated house," she said.

"Myself and fellow residents would like to know when this will be rectified.

"We believe there is much potential for this property as a valuable communal area, with its well established fruiting trees and open grass area, something sorely lacking within the Alarah Estate."

City of Casey city planning acting manager Kathryn Seirlis said the Council will commence preparation of a Master Plan for the parkland surrounding the Ercildounde Heritage building in early 2019.

"As part of the Master Plan, Council will consult with the community regarding their suggestions for this property," she said.

"The property holds large historical importance as it is one of the remaining farmhouses from the nineteenth century and has associations with the local Hall family, who established a model dairy farm in Cranbourne West."

Ms Seirlis said in 2016, Council undertook works to secure the building, as well as removed temporary fences.

The heritage listed property, located between City Vista Circuit and Ercildoune Court, is a neglected dilapidated house with broken windows, shattered glass and rusty metal around the property.

"It's hoped that throughout the process of developing a Master Plan, Council can determine a future for this site that is beneficial for all and will consider recommended projects through the annual budget process," she said.

Haileybury’s best NAPLAN results

By Jessica Anstice Haileybury students have again produced the school's best NAPLAN results, cementing its position among Australia's best academic schools.

Haileybury students topped in all testing categories, at all levels.

A remarkable average Year 9 numeracy score of 691 placed the school's students 99 points, or several years of teaching, ahead of the national average.

The Grade 3 Haileybury NAPLAN average exceeded the national average for Grade 5 students in all areas of NAPLAN (reading, writing, spelling, grammar & punctuation and numeracy).

The National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy began 11 years ago to test Australian students' core literacy and numeracy skills at Years 3, 5, 7 and 9.

Haileybury has consistently finished in Australia's top 10 primary schools and top 10 open entry secondary schools for boys and girls.

This year an anomaly favoured 20 per cent of Years 3, 5 and 7 students who completed the writing task online as a trial. Haileybury students were not in the trial, but still performed

brilliantly in writing.

Haileybury's Grade 3 writing results exceeded Garde 5 similar schools and Year 7 national averages. Grade 3 grammar and punctuation results also exceed Year 7 national averages.

CEO and principal Derek Scott said the remarkable results surpassed Haileybury's 2017 performance, which contributed to it being named 2018 Australian School of the Year at The Educator awards.

"To exceed these results in 2018 is a great credit to the students, the hard-working staff and the great commitment that Haileybury parents make to the education of their children," Mr Scott said.

"The dedication of all students, with support from their parents and our talented teachers, has again been rewarded with outstanding results."

Council is down on roads’ speed limits City of Casey will continue to work with VicRoads to reduce the speed limit along Pound Road and Shrives Road, Hampton Park and Narre Warren South.

The current speed limit is 70km/h on both of these roads.

"VicRoads will monitor Pound Road for the speeds but they don't seem to want to reduce the speed at the moment," Cr Damien Rosario said.

"I still stand by the fact that at least the stretch of Pound Road from the South Gippsland Highway through to Hallam Road and past Hallam Road to the roundabout at Pound Road, Shrives Road should be 60km/h.

"It is a very well used stretch of road and can also be quite dangerous."

Mr Rosario said a past report says that VicRoads do acknowledge that the visibility isn't very good on the stretch of Pound Road.

"As you elevate up you can't see what's over until as you come down," he said.

"I find that a concern and that's why I think reducing the speed limit by 10km/h will make that stretch of road much safer."

In August this year, VicRoads conducted a comprehensive safety review of Shrives Road in Hampton Park.

VicRoads are currently installing a new two lane roundabout at the Shrives Road and Pound Road intersection and new pedestrian operated lights on Shrives Road between Centre Road and Hallam Road to improve pedestrian safety.

A new Parking Strategy to address car parking management issues across the municipality was adopted by City of Casey Council at its meeting on Tuesday, 4 September.

A sub-strategy under Casey's Streets AheadIntegrated Transport Strategy, the Parking Strategy will provide direction on how Council oversees current parking supply and manages future parking provision.

"We were finding that a lot of our traders in many of our commercial precincts are struggling to have an off parking available for their customer base," Cr Sam Aziz said.

"This is because other residents unfortunately are parking for all day purposes rather than respecting the need for those traders to have parks available for their customers as they come and go through the day. Particularly train commuters due to the lack of availability of car parking for trains and public transports in general."

Mr Aziz spoke to a Berwick Village trader on Monday, 3 September.

"The trader I spoke to has been a Berwick institution for a very long time," Cr Aziz said.

"They have informed me that in the last three years have basically lost over 40 percent of their regular trade base as a result of these parking behaviours."

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said that the Parking Strategy outlines considerations for the future of parking management and includes mechanisms that aim to manage parking more efficiently and provide optimal parking supply.

"This strategy will assist us to more effectively manage both existing and future car parking demands across the municipality while we work to ensure that safety, amenity and accessibility are maintained for our community," said the Mayor.

The Parking Strategy was put out for public consultation in July, with 100 people visiting Casey Conversations to read more about the draft document and 47 people responding to the survey.

The survey sought responses on a range of issues including: What areas are of highest priority for increased enforcement/management The level of support for the application of technology and the level of awareness of installation of parking sensors at Bunjil Place Awareness of ride share or parking apps Locations where residents find parking easy Centres where residents find parking difficult "The key priorities to emerge included Council increasing enforcement around schools, reviewing the supply and enforcement of disabled parking, providing more education about the use of heavy vehicles in residential areas, and sharing more information with the community around Ride Share schemes.

"As part of our commitment to the Parking Strategy we have also employed a new Parking Management Unit to commence operation in September who will be working to implement these top priorities and helping to educate our community on their importance."

Water warriors keen to save Narre Warren North Primary School (NWNPS) recently signed up to the Schools Water Efficiency Program (SWEP), thanks to South East Water sponsoring their program registration.

SWEP provides data loggers to Victorian schools to track their water usage which means they can detect leaks, save water and teach students about the importance of water efficiency.

Participating schools also receive access to a tailored curriculum program, which incorporates the school's water data in mathematics and sciences.

NWNPS's environment club were enthusiastic about saving water at their school. Environmental leaders Hayden, Luke, Oliver and Lyla recently spoke at their school assembly to encourage their peers to use water responsibly.

"We need to turn off the taps when we are not using them. Even if you see only a little bit of water dripping, please turn it off," said Grade 3 student Hayden said.

"Also, we could collect excess water and use it wisely - the environmental club will be lookpakenhamnews.starcommunity.com.au

With the help of their teachers, the environmental club have been proactive at checking their water usage on the SWEP portal daily and are hoping to see the school's usage decrease as they raise awareness about using water wisely.

South East Water currently has 298 schools in its service region signed up to the SWEP program - almost half the schools in Melbourne's south-east.

In 2017-18, South East Water sponsored 40 SWEP school memberships and another seven schools over the last month.

Since the start of SWEP, South East Water's schools have saved more than 913 megalitres of water, worth an estimated $3.7 million.

The range includes LVL, ply (structural and non-structural), formply, fibre cement and claddings, outdoor timber, timber and metal framing, decking, insulation, doors, jambs and mouldings.

"We've got about 20 staff here with a lot of industry experience," Ben said.

"Most have come from other branches and some we've hired, but a lot of training has gone into them so their product knowledge is excellent.

A door to free study opens For Halle Taylor of Hastings, the Victorian Government's Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative offers the chance for her to study what she's been hoping for.

Free TAFE ensures eligible students like Ms Taylor from across Melbourne's south-east region will be able to access free training at Chisholm in a range of courses that lead to jobs most in demand from Victorian employers.

Through free TAFE, the Victorian Government will cover tuition fees for 20 priority TAFE courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses from 1 January 2019 for eligible students.

Ms Taylor has completed a Certificate III in Pathology and is considering a Certificate IV in Mental Health.

Until now, Ms Taylor and her family have found it challenging to meet the costs of vocational study, which can make it difficult for many to gain the skills they need to establish a career.

"I am passionate about my career," Ms Taylor said.

"Not having to pay for tuition fees would be really beneficial because instead of stressing and worrying about paying fees I can worry about my school work and doing the best I possibly can."

Free TAFE removes the financial barrier for students in the south-east who want to undertake quality, accredited TAFE training that

gives them the skills they need to secure real jobs building the state and caring for the community.

Victoria's unprecedented building boom of road and rail projects, new schools and hospitals, as well as increased support for Victorians living with disability and historic action to curb family violence has created a massive demand for skilled workers.

More than ever, the skills required for these high-demand jobs are learned at TAFE. "Chisholm is proud to offer these free priority courses and play our part in making sure all Victorians can get the training they need for a good job, and help deliver the skills mix needed by industry," Chisholm CEO Rick Ede said.

Chisholm is now taking enquiries for Free TAFE courses that begin in 2019.

RECORD BREAKING WINTER FOOD DRIVE IN its third year of operation the Parklea Winter Food Drive is proud to report that the generosity of the local community has helped break last year’s record of 330 kilograms of donations, with 2018 collecting over 500kg of non-perishable food.

This year the Parklea Winter Food Drive extended its reach by adding new collection points in more locations throughout Cardinia Shire, where local residents were able to support their neighbourhood throughout winter.

"The huge increase in donations is thanks in part to the local businesses who put their hands up and volunteered to be a collection point for the food drive,” said Parklea sales and marketing manager Jarod Mills.

“We are extremely grateful that they supported this program, an initiative that Parklea is so proud to deliver."

Food donations will be distributed via The 4Cs, a Pakenham-based charity that supports local families and individuals with food, shelter, counselling, training and financial relief.

Parklea thanked Club Officer, Montessori Beginnings Child Care at Timbertop Estate, Cardinia Life (Aligned Leisure), Arena Cafe at Arena Shopping Centre, and Timbertop Sales Suite, for supporting the initiative and opening up their businesses to be a collection point.

The Winter Food Drive is one of Parklea's many initiatives to help improve the quality of life of those living in and around the community.

Learn about backyard microbats - they’re our little mates Go batty these school holidays with a special afternoon focused on microbats at the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens.

Dr Casey Visintin is an environmental conservation researcher who has studied microbats for a number of years and will reveal much about these amazing animals in a special presentation on Sunday 23 September.

Microbats are among the most common animals in suburban backyards and in bushland. They come out at night to feed on insects.

Children are much more likely to hear their high-pitched squeaks at night than adults.

The tiny creatures use echo-location (sonar) to navigate and hunt and consume huge numbers of insects each night, including mosquitoes and other pest insects. Through the day they roost in tree hollows or crevices in tree bark.

Dr Visintin will talk about how important microbats are and there will be an opportunity to see one or two living microbats up close.

This lecture is in school holidays so children are especially welcome to bring along parents and grandparents.

The talk will be held on Sunday 23 September between 2 – 3:30 pm at the Australian Garden Auditorium, Cranbourne Gardens.

A little fun with the nuns The Dominican Sisters of Rosary Convent will be running a family fun day at the Pakenham Racecourse on 24 September 2018 -the first Monday of the spring school holidays.

As well as the fun of seeing the horseracing, there will be all kinds of food stalls so that families can get a nice cheap lunch, with a top-up of something sweet.

There will even be a free bouncy castle for the younger children and laser tag for the older children. Guests may even like to enter the running-races-for-kids where they can win a lovely prize donated by the racecourse.

Parents can enjoy the rapid raffles, the craft stalls, the sumo wrestling and the nun-busker.

Dads will be able to send flowers to their wives for a trifling fee and the flowers will be delivered right on the racecourse.

There will also be a tipping table where adults can try to predict the outcome of the

races.

And what is the good cause for all this fun?

It's because the nuns have only half of their new Convent built and they would love to add some more rooms to it, such as a library and some more bedrooms (called 'cells').

"It would be great if many people from our area could come to the racecourse (free admission) to share the day and contribute to the Sisters' building project!" Mother Mary Micaela said.

"The sisters look forward to seeing you there."

Sikh games in south-east The City of Casey has welcomed the announcement that the 2019 Sikh Games will be held in Casey next year.

The Minister for Sport, the Hon. John Eren attended Casey Stadium yesterday morning to announce $100,000 in State Government funding for the event, along with a $50,000 contribution from Council.

Members of the Australian Sikh Games Organising Committee were there to welcome the news, with the games scheduled to be held from 19 - 21 April 2019.

The Sikh Games will include 14 sports held across seven of of Council’s facilities, with more than 3000 athletes and 90,000 people expected to attend over the three days.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett welcomed the news and said Council is over the moon to showcase its facilities and is proud of the investments made into local sporting hubs.

“We are very excited to display our sporting facilities throughout the 2019 Sikh Games and would like to thank the State Government for the funding of this great event,” he said.

“Our host facilities will include Casey Stadium, Casey Fields, Casey RACE, Bunjil Place, the Hunt Club and Clyde Recreation Reserve.

“As part of our vision to become Australia’s most liveable city, Council has placed a strong focus on delivering premium state of the art sporting facilities, which we are proud of today.”

Teams will come from Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia to participate.

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players.The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. It’s a match made in heaven - a full-strength Berwick defending its premiership crown against the competition benchmark of the season, Narre Warren.

Names such as Tuck, Andrews, Rutherford, Magner, Smith and Riseley will clash with Collins, Scalzo, Quirk, Scanlon and McNamara.

What more could a grand final ask for? It will be tough, relentless football. Taking away the fact that these two powerhouses clashed in the grand final last season, this Saturday looms as an epic that will have many sharp turns of momentum. As it stands, the evenness of both teams should have an expected monster crowd in anticipation of what’s to come.

Can Berwick once again inflict the Magpies with a grand final loss and lift the premiership cup for the second year in a row? Or does Matt Shinners’ side - with all of its experience and fearless youth - turn the tables and end the season just like they began?

By 5pm on Saturday, these questions will be answered, and one team will go down as the final premiership team of the SEFNL. Back in April, Berwick coach Stewart Kemperman spoke about his side not being known as a “one-off”, and wanted to write yet another chapter, and not just be satisfied with the one premiership.

“Our club’s been around for 134 years, and we’ve only gone back to back once - if the team gets it right this years and the coming years, this Berwick side could be known as the best the club’s ever seen,” he said.

This time around, the Wickers didn’t achieve the perfect home and away season.

But something clicked as the season wore on.

Gradually, the Wickers found their mojo they defended with the stinginess of a champion team, and ran in waves, cutting the opposition to shreds when the moment to attack arrived.

Great rivals and champion teams Berwick and Narre Warren will do battle for more silverware on Saturday. 184742 had Narre Warren scratching their heads to figure out just how to bring down this champion team. The break is something Kemperman from his experiences last year - is not taking for granted.

“The season does come with a toll - it’s (the week off) allowed us to prepare each individual,” he said.

“We should have a few boys available.”

The big stage - something the Wickers have relished in, is what Kemperman is craving, and he said the group understands what lies ahead.

“From when we knew we’d be in the grand final, as a club we’ve certainly been excited,” he said.

“It’s hard to block out (the expectation), but we’ll just embrace it - it’s an exciting week.”

Kemperman expects superstar midfielder and skipper Madi Andrews to slot straight back in to take on a brilliant Narre Warren team, who he has viewed as the “benchmark” all season.

“They are a very, very good side,” he said.

“We’re under absolutely no illusions about what they can do.

“They’ve been the form side of the year, so we know we have to be right on our game.”

For Narre Warren coach Matt Shinners - a two-time premiership coach for the club in 2008 and 2010 - he said that his mix of youth and experience can carry his team to the pinnacle once more.

“I’ve got such a young group, despite the experience of players like (Brad) Scalzo, (Michael) Collins, (Nick) Scanlon, (Trent) Shinners and (Dylan) Quirk,” he said.

“But we’ve got so many youngsters running around for us, and they’ve got to have role models.

“It not only sets us up for this year, but it sets us up for an exciting future.”

Conquering the Wickers will be no easy task, but Shinners believes if they can get it in to their electric forward line quick enough, a winning score can be achieved.

Cranny’s uncertain future

By Nick Creely Cranbourne’s future remains up in the air after confirmation from AFL South East that the Eagles are unable to lodge an appeal against the outcome of the MPNFL's recent Special General Meeting.

It now means that the club will be unable to join the MPNFL in 2019, leaving it without a home at this stage.

An email sent out to MPNFL clubs and to Cranbourne on Tuesday 4 September stated that “after receiving legal advice from AFL lawyers, Cranbourne were advised that the AFL Victoria Rules do not override the MPNFL Constituion in regards to the admission of new members to the league”.

Originally, the 22 clubs met on 29 August to vote as to whether the Eagles would become a member club, and the News understands they got around 11 votes, or 50 per cent, which is lower than the 17-5 - or 75 per cent required to bring new clubs into the MPNFL. As a result, Seaford will be relegated to Division 2 in 2019 and the winner of the Division 2 grand final will be promoted to Division 1.

Cranbourne president Gerry Kelly recently told the News that the club believes its future lies on the Mornington Peninsula.

“We’ve got history with the MPNFL - we played Mornington back in 1890, and we’ve got four Cranbourne representatives in the Mornington Peninsula Team of the Century. Josh Kendall is a Cranbourne boy, Darryl Nisbet is a famous Cranbourne coach, Brutus Dalgleish and Patty Garrett as well,” he said.

“That just proves where we belong, well from my view anyway.

“We see ourselves being part of the Mornington Peninsula for the next 50 or 100 years.“ AFL South East region general manager John Anderson expressed his disappointment in the decision to the clubs, and said that he

“I’m devastated for Cranbourne, a community football and netball club like yourselves, that is now without a home,” he said.

“AFL South East will be working closely with the Cranbourne Football Netball Club to help determine the future direction of the club.

“Cranbourne is a strong, proud and passionate club and will be a wonderful asset for the league where it participates in for 2019 and beyond.”

The News understands that the Southern Football League - an option that has been floating around for the Eagles - is not a possibility,

with the league understood to be comfortable with the current competition structure, meaning they are not looking to add any new clubs in the near future.

It leaves the club with the possible option of joining up with the six SEFNL clubs who are joining the newly formed ‘AFL Outer East’.

The Dandenong District Cricket Association will have a new look this season, with the 2018/19 fixtures released on Wednesday 29 August.

Now adopting an eight-team model per grade, it’s set to be a bumper Turf 1 competition this season, with reigning premiers Mordialloc still seemingly the team to beat ahead of the season opener on 6 October.

The Bloodhounds will do battle with the very side they bested in last year’s grand final, Springvale South, in the opening round, in what is sure to be an absolute blockbuster to kick off the season.

Fresh off two consecutive Turf 1 flags, the Bloodhounds have added former international paceman Nuwan Kulasekera to its playing stocks, but have lost premiership skipper Stuart Squires, while Craig Slocombe will lead Springy South once again, and have added quality quicks Jarrod Armitage and Matt Wetering to the club as they look to go one better.

HSD are also going to be a tough side to knock off after confirmation that former SriLankan spinner Suraj Randiv will play for the club this season.

The 33 year-old took 43 wickets in test cricket, and 36 one-day scalps for his country, and will add a considerable amount of star power to the Cobras this year.

He will form part of a brilliant spinning duo with former Casey-South Melbourne leggie Cam Dinger.

In other Turf 1 games to kick off the season, Buckley Ridges will host St Mary’s, Berwick welcome North Dandenong to Arch Brown and Hallam Kalora Park take on HSD. Turf 2 also has a new look, with four Turf 1 sides last year in Dandenong West, Cranbourne, Dingley and Narre Warren all in the grade, while Parkmore Pirates, Narre South, Narre North and St Brigid’s/St Louis will have a point to prove as they look to claim some silverware.

Cranbourne - under new coach Matt Blackman - will look to rebuild with youth but will fancy their chances of being competition.

Turf 3 will also have an extremely competitive field this season, with Beaconsfield, Parkfield, Keysborough, Fountain Gate, Lyndale, Coomoora, Silverton and Lynbrook all former Turf 2 sides who will fancy their chances of having a successful season.

Beaconsfield in particularly are ready to launch at a premiership, with the signing of veteran Frankston spinner Jack Benbow and former Wookey Medal winner Alex Roberts have joined the club, and are rumoured to still be signing a Casey-South Melbourne player.
