“When a fit, healthy and energetic martial arts instructor forgets the names of his family and how to instruct his classes, alarm bells start ringing.“ “Then comes the dreaded diagnosis of a brain tumour with the words terminal cancer attached, and you suddenly find yourself on the hardest, most terrifying ride of your life, and all you long for is the train to STOP so you can all get off.” The precede from author Heather Roberts’ book All Aboard describes a journey of love, loss and peace. Ms Roberts said the book was a story of love and hope, and of a family uniting to keep their loved one at home where he belonged. “I thought it might make a good little book as a resource for people who are going through something similar, so they feel like they are not alone,” she said. “It’s about how we were losing him while he was still alive, and how we fought to keep him home as well.” Ms Roberts started writing the book when Andrew was diagnosed in June 2015 and she said reflecting and revisiting the diary was hard to do. “Sometimes I was strong enough to do it,” she said. “There were times, and probably two months ago I just went into a bit of a hole while finishing off. It got to me a bit, but it was also cathartic to look back upon it.” Since Andrew’s death, Ms Roberts has spent her time writing the book and co-ordinating the Kyoshi Andrew Roberts Foundation, which aims to help families who would like to bring their loved one home instead of spending their final days in a hospital. Families who bring their loved ones home might need shower rails, wheel chairs and hospital beds, which the foundation helps with. The money raised from the book will go to
