Residents in a Keysborough housing estate waited for years for their long-promised and overdue local park. Twelve months after opening, the site at the corner of Stanley Road and Westwood Boulevard is still far from a finished product. Built by Greater Dandenong Council, the park’s ‘lawns’ are blighted by vast dunes of grey sand; its grasses are still to take hold. As a result, the soccer pitch is just “full of weeds and sand,” says resident Zaneta Biskup. “It’s terrible - you can’t imagine kids playing soccer and footy there.” The park provides a basketball ring, barbecue and a playground set. But lacks any means of sun shade, and toilets. Residents had bought into the new estate on developers’ promises of attractive parklands, like the showpiece ‘Pirate Playground’ in the nearby Somerfield estate. They instead had to wait several years for the park to be built, which is lack-lustre in comparison, residents say. “We were promised the world and they didn’t deliver,” Ms Biskup said. Since moving in four years ago, Eddie Kolar says his young children had since grown out of using the playground. As for the soccer field, “anyone who wants a kick around aren’t going to enjoy themselves they’re just going to get sandy”. Greater Dandenong’s acting engineering services director Charles Taveira said the turf’s quality would “improve significantly in the next two to three months” with the start of the council’s spring maintenance program. Up to now, a warm climate grass had been used due to its drought-tolerant and sustainable qualities. It would take a minimum of 12 months to establish itself. The park and pitch, designed for casual recreational use, had been “well utilised” by the

Mayor hailed ‘Hep hero’ Greater Dandenong mayor Youhorn Chea has spoken out on his own Hepatitis C affliction to raise awareness of the massive rates of hepatitis in the council area. The council area has the second-highest rate of chronic Hep B in Victoria. Its reported chronic Hep C rate is at twice the state average. On 31 August, Cr Chea was ordained as one of 50 HEP Heroes by Hepatitis Victoria for his efforts for the cause. He was diagnosed and successfully treated for Hep C after he and his family arrived as refugees from Cambodia, he said. He'd contracted the disease in an unsanitary concentration camp. "When the Khmer Rouge took power in
Cambodia, my family was sent to the concentration camp where we were forced to carry out hard labour. "We were hungry and thirsty and very hot. I drank unclean water from the rice fields." Cr Chea spoke out to allay the stigma of viral hepatitis. "For me, taking leadership in liver health is very important. "I'm hoping by sharing my story I can reach out to the wider community to help them understand the seriousness of this disease and the treatment options available. "There is a stigma surrounding viral hepatitis that prevents people from talking to their families, getting tested or treated, or seeking support."
Most cases of Hep C are curable, and hep C can be managed with treatment. There are also vaccines against Hep A and B. He and his late wife Uchchara, who was a carrier of Hep B, brought up four children. He is also grandfather of six. "Through treatment and ongoing monitoring I have been given the all clear. "I'm one of the lucky ones. "Every day for as long as I can remember, I focus on being as healthy as I can." Cr Chea said it was important to see a doctor without delay. "Blood tests can determine whether you have viral hepatitis, and if so, which kind. "The sooner you get tested, the sooner you can take steps to protect yourself and others."

Jealous ex unleashes Samurai sword in ambush attack By Cam Lucadou-Wells A Springvale man has pleaded guilty to hacking the boyfriend of his ex-partner with a Samurai sword in an ambush attack in a residential street, a court has heard. The victim was parked in his car outside the accused's home in St John's Avenue, having just dropped off the ex-partner and her young daughter on Sunday 26 August, 2018. The 22-year-old accused man pounced out of bushes in front of the house, wielding the large sword, police told Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 3 September. With his face partly covered, he struck the driver's side of the vehicle multiple times. He struck the victim, leaving a deep laceration to his shoulder, as well as cuts to his armpit and arm, the court heard The heavily bleeding victim managed to start his car and drove away. His attacker
chased on foot, while still wielding the sword, police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kate Kirk said. The victim drove to nearby Stevens Street, summoning help from neighbours who dialled triple-0. He was taken to Dandenong Hospital. Meanwhile, the accused followed the partner and daughter as they walked to Springvale railway station, the court heard He sat down near them on a Dandenongbound train, asking if they could get back together. The man allegedly grabbed at the partner's leg as she got out of the train at Yarraman station. Police arrested the accused at the partner's Noble Park home. At court, he pleaded guilty to charges including recklessly causing injury. Defence lawyer Farah Banihali conceded the "premeditated" act was a "very serious ex-
ample of family violence". He had already bought the sword well before the act, however. She told of how his family came from Cambodia, and he was later born in Adelaide. He met his ex-partner on holiday in Cambodia six years ago, became engaged within a month and were married as 18-year-olds despite concerns from his family. The accused sponsored her to migrate to Australia. They had a daughter together. He'd become angry at the thought of the victim and partner "in his view, breaking up the relationship", Ms Banihali said. There were no diagnosed mental health issues, the court was told. In a previous family violence incident, a relative kicked a hole in the door and pulled the partner through to escape the man's furious assault. He was sentenced to a community correc-

tions order in 2016 for the violence, the court was told. Magistrate Jack Vandersteen described the recent offending as "extremely violent", resulting in a "very deep" injury. "If it was not for him being able to drive away, I don't know how it would have ended. "You are very fortunate, as he is, that he was able to drive away" Mr Vandersteen issued five-year intervention orders to protect the three victims. He deferred sentencing until a psychiatric report was prepared to assess "what was behind" the offending and the man's risk when released. He indicated the man faced jail followed by either parole or a community corrections order. The man was remanded in custody to appear at Dandenong Magistrates' Court on 9 November.

IN BRIEF Three injured in truck-car collision Three people have been hospitalised after a truck and a car collided on Frankston-Dandenong Road, Bangholme. Paramedics assessed five people at the scene about 1.30pm on 6 September. A man in his 20s was taken to The Alfred hospital by road ambulance with an arm injury. He was in a stable condition, an Ambulance Victoria spokesperson said. A woman in her 20s was taken to Frankston Hospital in a stable condition with an injury to her hip. Another woman in her 20s was taken to Dandenong Hospital with a shoulder injury. She was assessed as stable. Two men, one in his 20s and one in his 30s, had no sign of injury.

He'd known Rahat only as an associate of the man he feared, Justice Taylor said.
Police are warning the community to be wary of a telephone scam targeting the southern suburbs. Members of the public have contacted police stating they have received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the Australian Tax Office and that the victim has an outstanding tax debt. The caller further states the victim has an outstanding tax debt or arrest warrant due to the unpaid tax debt and if they don't pay they will be arrested. The caller then directs the victim to stay on the phone and attend their local bank and withdraw a significant amount of money. The victim is then directed to attend a specific ATM and deposit the cash. For information on the latest scams police suggest you visit www. scamwatch.com.au. Phone scams target southern suburbs

A Dandenong family say their "hearts have been broken" by the fatal shooting of their son, after his killer was jailed for a minimum of three years. Kamil Yucel, 30, was sentenced for the manslaughter of 20-year-old Dandenong man Rahat Khan at the Supreme Court of Victoria on 5 September. After months of living in fear of one of Rahat's associates, the state champion kickboxer shot his victim twice during an angry confrontation in Broadmeadows on 12 July 2016. Rahat and a friend ran 50 metres to a nearby car. It was only then that the friend realised Rahat was bleeding from a chest wound. He desperately drove around in search of a hospital before stopping at a shopping centre in Dallas. Paramedics were called to the scene but were unable to revive Rahat. The 20-year-old victim's father Mohin Khan told reporters outside court: "My son, he was innocent. My son, he loved everyone. "All of my family, all of my children, they are like me - their hearts are broken." Justice Lesley Taylor, in sentencing, noted the victim impact statements of Rahat's father, mother, sister and two brothers. "In short the family ... is shattered." Rahat Khan, known as a gifted cricketer and Aussie-Rules footballer at Dandenong North, aspired to play AFL. His family described him as a loving and caring son and brother - and how his loss had dev-
On the fateful evening, Rahat and his friend had waited in a car outside Yucel's brother's house, where Yucel was staying. They approached Yucel when he arrived home. During the heated exchange, Yucel told Rahat to "get lost": "Don't make me angry, just walk away ... I'll shoot you." Yucel produced a gun. Rahat approached, and Yucel shot twice downwards Justice Lesley Taylor said Yucel's fear of being shot was "ongoing, genuine and reasonable", but made a "regrettable decision" to arm himself with a gun. The "unusual" circumstances reduced the gravity of Yucel's acts and his moral culpability, she noted. Justice Taylor also took into account his "hugely demonstrative" remorse, and his maturity since committing affray and assaults in his early 20s. "The community should understand that your actions in discharging a firearm in close proximity to another person is denounced by the courts and will result in a substantial term of imprisonment. "That penalty reflects that your unlawful and dangerous act took the life of another human being. "The family of Rahat Khan will forever bear the sadness of his death at your hand." Yucel was jailed for up to five years, with a minimum non-parole period of three years. His term includes 782 days in pre-sentence detention.
Police investigations are underway following a horrific car crash involving children in Hampton Park at around 5.30pm, on Tuesday 6 September. It's understood the collision occurred at the intersection of Ralph Crescent and Cornell Place and it is believed the vehicle was negotiating a roundabout when the driver lost control and crashed into a pole. A 15 year old girl was rushed to hospital following the incident, in a critical condition sustaining head injuries. The girl remains in hospital, fighting for her life. The three other occupants, two boys and a girl aged between 13 and 15 years old were also taken to hospital with minor injuries. The vehicle involved, a gold Nissan Maxima, was reported stolen from Springvale on 30 August. Police are investigating links to the vehicle being seen earlier in the day in the near vicinity of this collision driving erratically and are appealing to anyone with knowledge of the driver to contact Crime Stoppers. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision are still being investigated. Police are urging anyone with information or who witnessed the incident and anyone who may have video footage of the erratic driving prior to, or of the collision, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au. Casey Highway Patrol officers and Major Collision Investigation Unit Detectives are appealing for witnesses.

We regret to state that the flag was again flying half-mast last week for another local soldier who had made the supreme sacrifice, in the person of Private V S Burns. The Town hall flag was, on Wednesday, flying half-mast for another local volunteer namely Liet M Kirkham, who was killed in action. The relatives of Regimental Surgeon Capt. Kenneth McLean MD BS MC are in receipt of a cablegram intimating that he has been wounded. The right arm, although unbroken, has been lacerated by a shell, necessitating two operations, but we are pleased to state that the ex-Dandenong ite is reported as making good progress towards recovery.
The bravery of a young Warre Warren woman has been acknowledged by the Royal Humane Society with the award of a bronze medal. She is Pamela Cougle 22 who went to the aid of her brother John, 29, after he was attacked by a jersey bull. Pam was awarded with her medal at Government House last week John Cougle drove the bull into an enclosed yard when it wheeled around and attacked him. It knocked him to the ground and butted him 60ft across the yard before he was able to attract the attention of his sister who was in the cow shed. Pamela saw John lying dazed on the ground and the bull standing over him. She climbed over the tractor and ran between the bull and her brother ... .. Pamela succeeded in chas-
ing the bull from the yard and returned to help her brother who was later taken to hospital.

Candlelight of mourning Dandenong's Hazara community has been rocked by tragedy abroad. Recently, a candlelight vigil was held in Harmony Square for young Hazara students killed by a bomber at a school in Kabul, Afghanistan. Star News spoke with John Gulzari of the Australian Hazara Federation. By Cam Lucadou-Wells On 15 August, a suicide bomber self-detonated in a classroom at a Shi'a education centre in Kabul. According to Afghanistan's Ministry of Health, at least 34 people aged 20 and under were killed. Fifty-six others were injured. They had been preparing for university entrance exams. It was one of an escalating number of Talibaninspired atrocities that have killed hundreds in the Hazara and Shi'a communities in Afghanistan. On 26 August, a sombre candlelight vigil was held in Harmony Square in response. "This candlelight vigil is the least we (the Hazara diaspora) can do to show our solidarity and sympathy with Hazaras who are the victims of recent terrorism in our homeland in Ghazni and
Kabul provinces," John Gulzari said. In Ghazni province, Taliban forces had stormed and turned the "whole city to dust". The Taliban was still in control in Afghanistan, holding sway over the central government and causing "chaos, trouble and terror" to innocent people, Mr Gulzani said. Their targets include Hazara-Shi'ite people killed for their "race,

"We offer our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and mourn the loss of countless innocent Hazaras. "We demand justice for Hazaras from the relevant authorities in both counties and ask the UN for taking strong measures from preventing such atrocities from happening ever again."

In celebration of Mooncake Festival
By Cam Lucadou-Wells Dandenong CFA's technical rescue crew has helped save a kelpie from 20 metres down a disused mine shaft at Smith's Gully. The crew with help from Plenty CFA and Victorian SES lifted Mac the kelpie safely out in a harness about 2.30pm on 4 September. Mac was apparently trapped since 8am. Crews were called to the shaft about noon, assessed the scene before starting the 30-minute rescue. According to a Facebook post by CFA Technical Rescue, rescuers faced several fallen tree branches as well as a possibly unstable rock slab at the site. So crews opted for a vertical rope extrication system as the safest option. Happily, Mac was virtually unscathed - but for a bloodshot eye.

Tip Top workers’ bunfight By Cam Lucadou-Wells Tip Top Bakery is embroiled in a ‘bunfight’ with its maintenance workers, who are holding rolling strikes at the Dandenong South site. According to AMWU delegate ‘Graham’, the crew of up to 20 maintenance workers have stepped up protected industrial action over the past several weeks. On 5 September, the workers stopped work for 24-hours. A further 12-hour strike was scheduled for two days later. In between, the crew’s electricians also held a separate 24-hour strike. The dispute has been sparked by EBA negotiations stalling over recent months.
Workers rejected a 1.5 per cent pay rise offer from the company - described as “effectively a pay cut” when compared to CPI. Tip Top had also intended to remove conditions which opened up the potential use of labour hire and contractors at a lower rate, Graham said. He said the company had already introduced savings measures such as a more efficient ordering system for large clients like
Coles and Woolworths. “We all enjoy working there. All of this has brought all of us (employees) a lot closer together. “What we’re asking for is about 1 per cent above CPI and don’t take any (conditions) off us.” In a statement, Tip Top said its offer was “fair and responsible”. The bread and baking industry faced “significant challenges” due to rising manufactur-
ing costs and price pressure from increased competition, it stated. “Tip Top’s current pay rates are well above award rates and the business is committed to maintaining above award conditions of employment for our people. “We remain open to continuing union negotiations to achieve an agreement that will deliver a fair financial outcome for our people and ensure our business can remain competitive in the future.”

By Cam Lucadou-Wells For much of his life, former Olympian cyclist Mick Hollingsworth rode by Noble Park's Maurice Kirby Velodrome on the way to work. He cycled to work at a Gillette factory on Princes Highway, not far from the circular track that is under threat of demolition. He may have had only the occasional lap, but it's the casual riders - the seniors or the kids learning to ride - that will miss this venue the most, he says. The mooted demolition by Greater Dandenong Council has activated the local cycling community. Local cyclists say they are set to revive a cycling club at the track, described as "disused" and "sub-standard" by the council. In the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Mr Hollingsworth rode a creditable 14th in a stellar field including future Tour De France champ Eddie Merckx. Visiting the velodrome recently, an amazingly fit Mr Hollingsworth said that the track was in a "lot better nick" than he'd expected. It was far from being beyond repair, or requiring complete reconstruction. "There's just one corner that got some water under it and got a bit lumpy." It isn't a venue fit for Olympic competition but it's a safe haven for senior riders, families and children to ride. "Out on the track, it's just you and the bike. "It's a great place to start learning to ride. If it was promoted a bit, they'd be amazed how many would be riding on it." In arguing against the track's retention, the council stated it was unlikely to encourage the "greatest level of extra cycling" compared to other infrastructure. It presented "risk factors" due to soccer and cricket being played on fields inside the track, the council stated.

There was "no known demand" for a competitive cycling track at Noble Park, with no registered clubs and minimal support for the facility. Within several weeks, up to 30 cyclists including Marcel Lema are set to form a club at the Noble Park track. Their membership is well above the 10 minimum to register with Cycling Victoria. Mr Lema, an Australian-representative rider, started training at the track as a teenager. Now it's about putting something back by saving community infrastructure, Mr Lema says.

Healthy ideas on the menu With a delicious serve of Vietnamese lunch, health is certainly on the menu at Wellsprings for Women. At its upcoming Women’s Health Expo, there is an array of information on health issues, healthy lifestyles and fun exercise. The topics include cancer prevention and early detection, healthy eating, mental health, eating disorders, hypertension, diabetes, dementia and osteo-arthritis. The message is seek early advice on health concerns, have regular check-ups and learn about healthy lifestyles, says Wellsprings for Women chief executive Dalal Smiley. Bus assaults Dandenong Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are appealing for information following two incidents on the same bus line last week. Investigators have been told a 17 year old girl was on board the 893 bus from Cranbourne to Dandenong about 6pm on Tuesday 28 August. She exited the bus at Waverley Park Drive, Cranbourne North where a man had been waiting at the stop. He started following the victim before grabbing her and kissing her. The victim fought back and the man verbally abused her before producing a knife and punching her. She sustained minor scratches and the man fled. About 2.30pm the following day, a 17 year old girl was waiting with friends at a bus stop on the Princes Highway near Harmer Road, Hallam waiting for the 2.38pm bus. A man crossed from the other side of the road towards the bus stop and began shouting abuse at the victim and her friends.

He grabbed the victim and pushed her into a bus stop before abruptly leaving. She sustained minor bruising during the incident. The man was seen walking along the Princes Highway and turning left onto Harmer Road. Detectives believe the same person was involved in both incidents and have released a composite image of a man who they believe can assist with their enquiries. He is perceived as Caucasian in appearance, about 40 to 50 years old and unshaven. The man wore black pants, a grey top and black cap during the second incident and was carrying a black backpack. Police are also hoping to speak to a woman with a pram, who came to the aid of the first victim at the time. A door to free study opens For Halle Taylor of Hastings, the Victorian Government's Free TAFE for Priority Courses initiative offers the chance for her to study what she's been hoping for. Free TAFE ensures eligible students like Ms Taylor from across Melbourne's south-east region will be able to access free training at Chisholm in a range of courses that lead to jobs most in demand from Victorian employers. Through free TAFE, the Victorian Government will cover tuition fees for 20 priority TAFE courses and 18 pre-apprenticeship courses from 1 January 2019 for eligible students. Ms Taylor has completed a Certificate III in Pathology and is considering a Certificate IV in Mental Health. Until now, Ms Taylor and her family have found it challenging to meet the costs of vocational study, which can make it difficult for many to gain the skills they need to establish a career.
"I am passionate about my career," Ms Taylor said. "Not having to pay for tuition fees would be really beneficial because instead of stressing and worrying about paying fees I can worry about my school work and doing the best I possibly can." Free TAFE removes the financial barrier for students in the south-east who want to undertake quality, accredited TAFE training that gives them the skills they need to secure real jobs building the state and caring for the community. Victoria's unprecedented building boom of road and rail projects, new schools and hospitals, as well as increased support for Victorians living with disability and historic action to curb family violence has created a massive demand for skilled workers. More than ever, the skills required for these high-demand jobs are learned at TAFE.
"Chisholm is proud to offer these free priority courses and play our part in making sure all Victorians can get the training they need for a good job, and help deliver the skills mix needed by industry," Chisholm CEO Rick Ede said. Chisholm is now taking enquiries for Free TAFE courses that begin in 2019. By Hayley Wildes There’s such a thing as sending a message to the competition, and then there’s quite simply blowing away the competition. The Dandenong Stingrays did both in their elimination final against the Greater Western Victoria Rebels on Saturday afternoon at IKON Park. On a perfect day for football, the Rays who finished top of the TAC Cup ladder after dropping just one game all season - rose to the occasion of finals football, displaying their staunch defence and ability to launch attacks from the back half. Another aspect that was just superb was the Rays’ forward 50 entries; pinpoint passes to make life extremely difficult for the Rebels’ defence. After a couple of misses, the Rays broke through for their first goal of the game at the six-minute mark when Lachlan McDonnell finished off a great link-up passage of play through the middle of the ground with a fine running goal. Despite dominating play and not allowing the Rebels the ball - it was over 10 minutes until Dandenong kicked its second goal; courtesy of great run and carry play by Zac Foot, followed an Ned Cahill crumb and goal. It was the start of what was a truly dominant game from Cahill. He was involved in everything up forward and the Rebels just couldn’t contain his impact. On the stroke of quarter-time, Cahill crumbed another pack and snapped truly to give the Rays a 28-point quarter-time lead. The Rays’ pressure was smothering the Rebels and when they did get what seemed like a rare disposal, the pressure - either perceived or real - rushed them into poor decisions and

By Hayley Wildes In Division 2 of the Southern Football League, Keysborough almost pulled off one of the great comebacks against Highett in their preliminary final on Saturday but fell agonisingly short. The Burras will be kicking themselves about their slow start that saw them trail by 39 points at the first break. Highett had come to play and Keysborough was left reeling, but the second quarter was the start of a spirited Burras fightback. As Cory Hargreaves (three goals) got heavily involved, Keysborough fought tooth and nail for every ball, reducing the margin to 29 points at the main break. The third quarter was again won by the Burras and at the final break, they were just 20 points adrift, courtesy of the likes of Riet Pal and Michael Downie. In a back and forth final quarter, it was on for young and old and when Chris Bryan kicked his third goal of the quarter - and sixth for the match - the Burras trailed by just four points with eight minutes to play. The final few minutes of the game were frantic as Keysborough searched for the match-winning goal, but a late Ed Turner major gave Highett some breathing room and they held on for a 14.15 (99) to 14.4 (88) win. Highett moves onto the grand final and will face the Doveton Eagles on Saturday afternoon. In Division 3, after a magical home and away season, Hampton Park was bundled out of the finals in straight sets. After a tight and tough first half, Endeavour Hills produced an eight-goal to three second half to book its place in the grand final. Byron Hoe and Andrew Vella were sublime for the Falcons as they dominated across the ground, while Jack Besley and Jackson Philpin were best in what was a disappointing end to a promising season for the Redbacks. Springvale Districts and Endeavour Hills will meet in the grand final on Sunday afternoon.
What really stood out throughout the entirety of the game was Dandenong’s unselfish play - many players passed up good shots on goal for great ones. It’s this mindset that has powered the Rays all season and will continue to power them as they look to book a place in the grand final this weekend.

Reigning NBL Champion Melbourne United is heading to Dandenong Basketball Stadium on Tuesday 11 September. In what is sure to be a great preseason match-up, United will face the Cairns Taipans from 7pm as it continues preparations to defend its crown in the upcoming 2018/19 NBL season. United will boast the likes of Melbourne fan favourites Chris Goulding and Josh Boone on Tuesday night, while the new guys, led by Australian Boomer Mitch McCarron, Dan Trist and Alex Pledger will also provide plenty of highlight plays. The Dandenong Stadium match-up will most likely be Boone’s first hit-out of the preseason after the superstar import centre arrived in Melbourne last month. A player known for his big dunks and standout ability to fight in the paint for rebounds, the battle between he and Cairns big man Nate Jawai will be a fascinating one. Oneata makes her mark By Hayley Wildes Oneata Schwalger's journey to the National Rugby League Women's Premiership competition (NRLW) hasn't been easy, so relocating away from her young family to New South Wales in order to pursue her dream was just another step in her journey that had to be taken. Schwalger, who plays locally for the South Eastern Titans Rugby League Club, was signed by the St George Illawarra Dragons in June and knew that meant she would have to move away from her family for the length of the preseason and season proper. Having moved up to Wollongong in late July, Schwalger will stay up there for the length of the season, which kicked off over the weekend and runs in unison with the NRL finals. "I relocated at the end of July and have been training with the team since then. Our official training began at the start of August and I knew I just had to get up here to get into it and get a feel of it all," Schwalger said last week. "It's almost the same in terms of I'm still doing the same things, I just don't get to go home to my kids - not having my sons around has definitely been the biggest change. "The little things like whenever I would get home from training, my boys would always greet me - I miss that part, but I video chat with them every day." Schwalger's game is built on aggression and physicality, and as she puts it, 'being able to run over and through people'. Prior to the Dragons kicking off their season - and their existence - yesterday at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Schwalger talked about the experience of being a part of the historymaking inaugural NRLW season. "It's exciting - we're the first to do this," she said.
"We got a bit of a history lesson about the Dragons on Wednesday and it's cool to see little things like that to sort of know what's happened before us and what it's led to. "For us, this is the first semi-professional women's rugby league competition and they'll be talking about us in 20 years."

Tornado Tears stamped himself as the undisputed king of distance racing after emerging victorious against litter brother Rippin' Sam in last Thursday night's 'Battle of the Brothers' match race at Sandown Park. As expected, Tornado Tears began best and crossed Rippin' Sam to lead through the first turn before opening a two-and-a-half length margin with a lap to go. Rippin' Sam responded down the back straight to cut the margin to a length, however in a repeat of the recent National Distance Championship final, Tornado Tears railed strongly through the final turn and raced away from his gallant rival, re-establishing the twoand-a-half length margin and stopping the clock in 33.774 seconds. The exhibition between the sport's two hottest stayers garnered enormous interest from greyhound racing fans around the world, however a nearby thunderstorm which featured an impressive lightning show almost saw the event postponed. "Six months ago I would have worried about the dogs in conditions like that but they've calmed down a lot. As soon as the lids went down it was business time," Riley said. "They're very professional now. They get weighed first thing race morning and as soon as they do, they know it's time and they do what they do." The pair's next assignment is the $190,000 Speed Star match race series at Sandown Park on Sunday 16 September.
