Holy site gets council tick

By Brendan Rees Plans for a church to be built in a semi-rural court in Narre Warren South have been approved despite residents saying they've been "hung out to dry."

At their Planning Committee Meeting on Tuesday 14 August, Casey Councillors voted to issue a planning permit for an orthodox church to be developed at Bartok Court.

The plans from St. Mary's Syrian Orthodox Community Centre Inc propose to operate the church seven days a week.

It's also proposed if Bartok Court becomes connected to the road network vehicle access to the site would be from Bartok Court with vehicle access from Pound Road ceasing.

Proponent Cr Sam Aziz said the proposed church development would "See many people consider moving to the City of Casey; it will see people now thinking about moving businesses or starting new business operations in the City of Casey."

He said said the church community had been "very responsible in working cooperatively with council" in producing amended plans. This included removing a caretaker building and a hall at the rear of the site.

In regards to road access, Cr Aziz said: "We don't believe VicRoads will act on this for at least

a decade."

Des Yapp and his wife Marie who have lived at Bartok Court for over 20 years fear they will lose their privacy with more cars right driving "next to our bedroom window."

Mr Yapp said he was disappointed by the out-

come by councillors playing "political games" and were only "bargaining to procure votes".

"Councillors are meant to represent the rate payers who elected them and plan for the future not chase votes at the cost of causing future turmoil," he said.

"Sam Aziz is playing his cards on the fact that he's dismissed all of the residents objections by completing hiding the main point which is the future traffic problem and ignoring his planning department."

Mr Yapp added there was no consideration of what was going to happen in 10 years' time: "Sam Aziz will be long gone. He'll be out of politics and it'll be someone else's problem.

"It's just ludicrous that he's allowed to get away with this - he obviously doesn't care about the residents."

Objectors believe amplified music from private functions held at the church will "disrupt" the quiet residential area.

Dissenting councillor Rex Flannery said it was a "no-win situation" for the Yapps as cars would be "running up along their bedroom" as well as having to cop noise from functions.

Mr Yapp said he was looking at appealing the decision but "The cost factor is going to be pretty horrific for us."

Young snowboarding whiz

Bunjil Place has received international recognition for its striking and unique design, with the project being recognised at the 2018 Global Architecture and Design Awards.

"They set us up with gear and have since supplied Leo all his gear.

"The last few years snowboarding has given him an outlet in what was an extremely tough time in his young life due to family issues."

As a full time single father, Mr Tieu has done all he can do as far as getting Leo to the snow most weekends.

Painful 3am Sunday starts for day trips were the norm until Snowgum Deletite Apartments in Merrijig sponsored Leo accommodation to stay in over the winter.

"Financially we were never in a position to do lessons or any type of squad training so Leo resorted to hundreds of hours of YouTube snowboarding tutorials," Mr Tieu said.

"And fortunately Leo met great people along the way such as his sport heroes Australian Olympian Cameron Bolton and National Champion Harvey Edmanson who have occasionally given Leo tips.

New award for Bunjil Place Bunjil Place has again received international recognition for its striking and unique design, with the project being recognised at the 2018 Global Architecture and Design Awards.

The City of Casey's new arts and cultural precinct, designed by leading Australian architectural firm Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (fjmt), was last week named the winner of the Cultural (Built) category.

The awards recognise projects showcasing excellence and innovation in architecture and design from across the world, this year attracting 748 projects from more than 50 countries spanning a range of categories.

Hampton Park's young snowboarder Leonidas Tieu represented his school, St Kevin's Primary School at the Victorian Interschools Snowsports Championships held at Mt Buller on 22 August.

On 12 August with Golds in both Pro Slalom and Giant Slalom, Leo was the overall winner of the 2018 Division 5 Land Rover King of The Mountain series held at Mt Buller.

"We are enormously proud of Leo's achievements in his chosen sport and love of snowboarding," St Kevin's Primary School principal Anni Miers said.

"We try to ensure that all students have opportunities to pursue their interests by providing a wide range of sporting initiatives in our curriculum both individual and team based.

"As a result our children are very fit and enthusiastic when others succeed."

Nationals unfortunately is held at Perisher this season so Leo was not going to attend until this news was seen on social media by local businesses IWIM motors and Australasian Technical Services who generously sponsored Leo's trip.

Leo's father, Danny Tieu first took Leo to the snow when he was three years old.

"The following year Leo wanted to try snowboarding so by amazing fortune I went into Macs Snow Sports in Moorabin and spoke to Tania and Troy who I now consider to be great friends," Mr Tieu said.

St Margaret's Grammar School has been iconic in the heart of Berwick for over 90 years.

"I thought it was a fantastic event. St Margaret's School Berwick is one of the oldest schools in the area and I felt a great appreciation of the role of the school in the community and the incredibly rich community that is Berwick," principal Annette Rome said.

"The school is highly regarded by the people who live in Berwick and at the event there were a lovely number of moments where people would come to us and share their memories of St Margaret's and Berwick.

"A number of students who wore the original brown uniform caused a lot of comments and reminisces."

Ms Rome said there was a strong sense of community which came from the event and considering the weather was a little bit miserable, the warmth from the community shone through.

Phoenix Harmony Chorus also performed on the day.

"It was a great day reflecting on the Shire of Berwick's rich history and heritage, acknowledging how far it has come and celebrating the great community it is today," City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said.

"Despite the wet and cold conditions, it was great that many people still turned out to join in the celebrations.

"It was wonderful to hear stories from families that have had a long history in the area and see children playing traditional games such as hopscotch and french skipping.

"Thanks to all the Berwick groups and organisations that were involved in the event and helped make it such a great day."

Insight’s new moves

By Jessica Anstice Forty people attended the launch of the new VW Minbus, at Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, on Wednesday, 29 August in Berwick.

Funds for the minibus were raised by the Rotary Club of Emerald and District Inc after their Kids Fun Run with Thomas event, in 2017.

The minibus will expand the transportation services for vision impaired students in the South East Melbourne corridor.

In his address to the group, including MP Jason Wood, Rotary president Ian Ash, Insight staff, sponsors, board members and supporters, Ian Wakefield from Emerald Rotary thanked everyone who contributed funds and services to the Kids Fun Run with Thomas event.

“It was a true community initiative, literally running an event to raise funds for the disadvantaged, in this case blind and vision impaired children,” Mr Wakefield said.

Mr Wakefield acknowledged the perseverance and great work undertaken by Insight’s founder Alan Lachman as well as all the sponsors, participants and Rotary Club members involved.

“I now want to expand our services through mobile classrooms and satellite schools, to serve the over one thousand blind and vision impaired students around the state,” Mr Lachman said.

“The addition of the (VW) minibus will be of great assistance with this.”

The VW minibus was supplied by Ferntree Gully Motors Group, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Emerald and District Inc. The Group has a number of community service fund raising initiatives, and has helped raised millions of dollars for the wider community over the past few years.

Celebrating a uniting image

By Jessica Anstice Community members gathered to unveil the Community Building Path, Art and Diversity Mural at Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House in Berwick on Monday, 27 August.

“The two pieces represent the houses’ values and the coming together of the community,” Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House programs coordinator Sasha West said.

“The weaving piece was made by individual pieces which have been connected together to create the beautiful artwork that hangs on the wall for everyone to see.

“The embroidered piece has been created by a group that has been attending Brentwood Park Neighbourhood House for many years, this piece has been designed and hand crafted over many hours, it shows the variety of programs running at the centre and the values that are embedded.”

During the unveiling there was an opportunity to meet the makers whom discussed their experience through their time of the project but also celebrating the achievement of the hard work that has been put into both wall hangings.

In my working life I did my workshops every year around Responding to Abuse and Neglect, it must be done by everyone who works with children, I understand this. We are then mandated to report any sign of child abuse to authorities.

Okay, so let’s talk about the documented abuse that is happening on Australia’s offshore island open air prisons. After watching 7.30 on 27th August, there can be no questioning this and no rhetorical responses will make it go away. There can never be any justification for detention and harm to children seeking asylum.

This secret cannot be kept any longer, the word is out and everyone knows what is going on.

How can we be held to account for children here in Australia and not the children on Nauru? How can our government possibly justify this?

By Jessica Anstice Tooradin Primary School celebrated the importance of positive male role models in each of their children's life.

Students invited a special friend to the Father's Day Breakfast to spend some time in their school environment - dads, grandparents, uncles, brothers, neighbours, and of course mums were invited too.

One of the schools Parents and Friends Association (PFA) members had a catering background and put her hand up to start the exciting Father's Day Breakfast.

"We have huge support from our parents and local community members who jumped in to assist with making this occasion such a success," PFA president Mandy Skewes said.

"Many activities were organised during the morning for children and adults to enjoy."

Activities included making a card, who is your superhero game, kick the footy, dad themed music, relaxing seating and chalk drawing challenge all while eating a delicious egg and bacon roll and hash browns.

This breakfast was followed by a Father's Day Stall for the students which the PFA have worked very hard in thinking outside the square for the students would want to purchase for their special person.

14yo faces court

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 14 year old boy has faced a children’s court over an alleged seven-week crime spree of stealing five Nissan Pulsars as well as unlicensed, dangerous and reckless driving in Melbourne’s South-East.

The boy was arrested on 27 August and faced court the same day.

He was charged with stealing a 1998 Pulsar vehicle in Cranbourne on 10 August, and stealing a 2000 Pulsar and being equipped with scissors for the theft at Cranbourne on 13 August.

On the same day, he allegedly drove unli-

censed on High Street, Cranbourne, and failed to stop after being involved in a crash.

On 14 August, he allegedly stole a 1999 Pulsar at Narre Warren South, drove unlicensed at Amhurst Drive, evaded police, and drove in a dangerous manner.

One charge alleges he engaged in reckless conduct that day by driving at high speed before losing control and striking a gutter, causing damage to the car.

He placed his “associate” front passenger at risk of death, police alleged.

The boy was also charged with stealing a 1999 Pulsar at Narre Warren on 23 August, and a 1998 Pulsar at Narre Warren two days later.

He was also accused of robbing a victim of MTG cards and a Myki card, recklessly causing injury, assault and assault in the company of others in Cranbourne on 2 July.

On 27 August, a children’s court magistrate told the boy the accusations were “very serious”.

“Think about what is happening here and why you’re in this situation,” the judge said.

He was told by the magistrate to look at his “defiant” attitude, the kids he hung out with and his decisions that put himself and others at risk.

The boy was remanded in custody to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

$80K grant windfall City of Casey has been successful in its application for a grant to assist with its Family Violence Prevention Program.

The Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, Natalie Hutchins visited Bunjil Place on Thursday 16 August where she announced $80,000 in funding towards the council program.

The City of Casey recently launched its Family Violence Prevention Strategy as part of its effort to ensure Casey is a city where people feel safe in their homes, neighbourhoods, in public spaces and on all modes of transport.

The Strategy was formally launched at an event in July and contains a four-year strategic plan, which identified family violence as a significant safety issue within the municipality.

It aims to provide a safe, inclusive and connected community where Council services and facilities are driven by community needs.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett welcomed the funding from the State Government and thanked Minister Hutchins for attending Bunjil Place and making the announcement.

Sixteen rising sporting talents have been rewarded for their achievements by receiving Federal Government Local Sporting Champions grants.

The athletes were recently presented with their grants varying between $500 and $700 by Holt MP Anthony Byrne at Arthur Wren Hall in Hampton Park on Friday 17 August.The Local Sporting Champions program aims to provide financial assistance for coaches, officials and competitors aged 12-18 participating in state, national or international championships.

Two of the recipients included brothers Kurt Tchia and Koen Tchia who both compete for Mazenod Volleyball Club.

They have also represented Victoria in the Australian Junior Beach Volleyball Championships. The Local Sporting Champions Grant will assist both in representing Victoria at the national Championships in Western Australia this year.

During the month of September, Aussies are encouraged to show their true colours in

Berwick burglary Casey Crime Investigation Unit is investigating a burglary that occurred at a retail store in Berwick on 21 August.

At approximately 7:30pm on Wednesday, 29 August members from Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol intercepted a Renault van after it was detected travelling at 75km/h in a 60 zone.

The driver, a 41 year old man, was required to undergo a breath test which returned a positive result.

The subsequent evidentiary breath saw the driver return a result of 0.054.

As the driver had a previous drink driving conviction he was served a section 51 and his licence immediately suspended.

The driver will be required to attend court in the near future in relation to charges of drink driving and exceeding the speed limit.

Police allege that at approximately 3:30am two unknown offenders have attended the O'Shea Road business in a white van, forced the front door open and stole property and money.

Police have released CCTV images in the hopes that someone may have some information about the incident or recognise the people in the images.

Two unknown offenders broke into a Berwick retail store on 21 August.

A speeding driver intercepted in Officer was caught out with weapons and drugs in his vehicle on Saturday, 2 September.

Pakenham police spotted the Volkswagen Golf allegedly travelling at more than 150km/h along the Princes Highway just after midnight.

The car was intercepted, with police locating a firearm, conducted energy device and ammunition.

Quantities of amphetamine and cannabis were also seized.

A 26 year old man from Hampton Park was arrested at the scene.

Carer's Day out at Bunjil Place on Friday, 24 August was a wonderful success with 75 people attending. The day included a light morning tea followed by songs from the Beatles in the Bunjil Place Theatre.

After this, carers enjoyed lunch, which included activities such as Latin dancing, a photo booth and a presentation to each person with a red rose from Deputy Mayor Cr Amanda Stapledon, as a token of council's gratitude for the work they undertake.

By offering 200 lessons per week, Kingswim Clyde North is hoping to see the hundreds of children currently missing out provided with a vital life skill.

Mr Dowsing said the team is excited to pro-

vide local kids with the necessary skills to survive and thrive in the water.

"For a country where 85% of the population lives within 50 km of the coast, it's crucial all children have access to swimming lessons," he said.

"Last year saw a 20% increase in fatal drownings in Victoria compared to the 10-year average. It's our mission to change those statistics and ensure every child has the confidence and

ability to stay safe in the water, whether that be at the beach, river or in backyard pools."

The new Kingswim facility will open in January 2019 within the Ramlegh Springs on Clyde Estate on Tuckers Road, Clyde North.

A touch of the rainbow Students and teachers at Narre Warren North Primary School certainly lived up to the rainbow theme on Friday, 24 August.

Junior School Council (JSC) organised a special day where everyone wore rainbow and sunflower colours in support of past teacher Lindsay Kennedy who is undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

Her choice of charity was the McGrath Foundation. Around $750 was raised on the day and every bit of it was donated to the foundation.

The JSC and school community are very

grateful for all the donations as this was the best fundraising effort Narre Warren North has made. ""The theme Rainbows and Sunflowers comes from Mrs Kennedy, as when she is feeling sad or having a bad day, she thinks of these things and it makes her feel a bit happier," teacher Stephanie Barker said.

"It was fabulous to have so many children dress up in beautiful bright colours.

"This was a real treat for Mrs Kennedy who visited for morning tea and had a photograph with the children before returning to class.

Thank you to everyone who made the effort."

Rotary honours Amanda

By Jessica Anstice City of Casey deputy mayor Amanda Stapledon was awarded a Paul Harris Fellowship by the Rotary Club of Berwick on Wednesday, 29 August.

The award is named after the founder of Rotary, Paul Harris, a Chicago lawyer who started Rotary International with three business associates in 1905.

"At no time did I imagine I would be the recipient of such a prestigious award but am truly overwhelmed and honoured," she said.

"Two special people were invited as special guests; Janet Halsall and Roger Lord have been huge influences in my life and I was thrilled that they were present."

St John of God was presented a cheque for $10,000 and guests saw presentations of the Student Program that studies Federal Politics, in Canberra and the club's amazing work over in Balibo, East Timor.

Finalists line up for a win The finalists for the 2018 Casey Cardinia Business Awards have been revealed, with 26 local businesses in the running across the 10 categories for the region’s flagship awards program.

The awards are a partnership between the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire Council, held each year to recognise and celebrate the outstanding achievements and contribution of businesses and organisations across the region.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett congratulated the finalists at a special function held at the Cranbourne Golf Club on Friday 31 August.

“Through our regional partnership, Casey and Cardinia coordinate a range of programs and events that support our local business community, encourage professional development and foster shared learning,“ Mr Ablett said.

“Importantly these programs, including the CCBA, shine a light on the many successful businesses operating across the region.

“The CCBA give recognition to those who are excelling in their fields, celebrate local business success stories and provide another platform to come together and strengthen the economic viability of the region.

“Our local businesses provide invaluable local job opportunities for residents and expand the horizon for job seekers.“ Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Collin Ross said the judges had a tough task in selecting the finalists.

“This year there were more than 80 applications received and it was pleasing to see that many applications submitted were by businesses connecting with the program for the first time,” Cr Ross said.

“The judges were impressed with the calibre of entries which reflects the diverse, thriving and quality business community that exists in this region - something we’re incredibly proud to be able to celebrate through this awards program each year.”

All finalists are also in the running for the coveted Casey Cardinia Business of the Year award, an award Cr Ross said created a fantastic morale boost for the winner.

“If you are business of the year people get very excited. I remember a couple of years ago at Cranbourne there was a whole group sitting on a table and they were amazingly excited. I’m sure when they went back to their workplace productivity went through the roof they were so excited about what they had achieved.”

Maria’s passion shines

By Rebecca Skilton “Choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.“ Those are the wise words that CEO, creative director and lead designer of Fountain Gate’s Artelia Jewellery, Maria Ulas, is living by.

But as the now businesswoman and jewellery designer explained, her life wasn’t always so, with a number of “trials and errors” leading to her dream career.

“I did biomedical science at university and majored in microbiology and I was actually working at Monash Medical Centre but it was very hard-hitting,” Maria said.

“I studied for five years before I realised, ‘oh my god, I’m just going to shrivel up if I stay here ... this isn’t me’.“ Having always considered her drawing and creativity “just a hobby“, Maria never considered her passion as a career path - until she met her husband, Robert. “(Robert) kept saying to me ‘you’re so creative’ and I would say; ‘no, I’m not...I’m supposed to be a doctor or a scientist, I’m not creative’,” Maria said.

“He’s a master jeweller and it wasn’t until he went to Italy and brought back some enamel (that I considered it as a job). He literally came home and said; ‘design me a range, just try it. Just give it a go and see what happens’. So I did.

“I designed this range and we took it to the Sydney Trade Show and it went absolutely crazy. It was overwhelming; the factory couldn’t keep up with the demand to get these pieces out.

“It was that moment where I said, ‘okay, I see what you’re saying, let’s do this’. And the rest is history.”

Following her decision for a career change, Maria worked alongside Robert at his jewellery manufacturing business, TWM co, but admitted something was still “lacking“.

“I’m a very emotional person - I really go by energy and the meanings behind everything.

So I thought, something’s calling me and I really need to do this,” Maria said.

‘This’ would become Artelia, which opened on 28 May 2017. Alongside her team, Maria offers “the finest diamonds, pearls and precious stones,” and considers the Artelia team to be the wedding and engagement ring specialists.

Maria prides herself on the store’s bespoke

approach and the fact that all pieces are designed and created in-house by herself and Artelia master jewellers. “(In the beginning) a lot of people would say; ‘have you got competition? How are you going to do this? How are you going to do this being a mum with kids?’ But I honestly don’t consider this work. When there’s enough of a drive to do something, it’s not work. There’s no other alternative at this point; this is where my heart is. My heart sings when I’m here,” Maria said.

“I used (my two kids) younger years to prepare - people are always really surprised, especially family and friends. They’ll be like ‘where did you come from?’ and I say, ‘well this is what I’ve been up to in the last five years’.

“But it’s taking every opportunity and not thinking ‘I’m just going to sit here,’ which isn’t in me anyway. I used (the baby and toddler years) to my advantage, and then, when the time was right, I was ready to go.”

Eager to keep learning, Maria is also studying gemmology with the Gemmological Association of Australia and dedicates more than three nights a week to her studies. She divides her time between her professional and personal life but does believe the love of her career has a positive influence on both herself and her family.

“This is my weakness; the obsession. But I honestly think if you’re happy and your heart is singing, your kids’ hearts will sing with you,” Maria said.

“My advice to other women would be to not only live your best life but to bring out the best in yourself.

“It’s so much easier to not do anything and sit back and take the back seat whereas we’ve got so much to give. We’re so special and we’re so hardworking, it’s ingrained in us. If there’s a dream, don’t waste time. And if you’ve got young children and you feel like right now I can’t, you can. All it is is mindset. If there’s something they want to do or a business they want to go for or achieve, just go for it.”

In a professional athletic career spanning 12 years, Brendon played 244 games of AFL football with the Richmond Football Club from 1990 to 2001.

Upon retirement from professional football, Brendon practiced law with commercial law firm Mallesons Stephen Jaques in the banking and finance division.

In January 2005, Brendon was appointed CEO of the AFL Players Association where he was responsible for representing the collective industrial interests of all AFL players.

In September 2009 Brendon was appointed as CEO of the Richmond Football Club. Brendon leads a diverse team of over 140 people, a budget of approximately $80 million and is responsible for the performance of all aspects of the organisation.

Under Brendon’s leadership, Richmond’s iconic Punt Road Oval headquarters has been transformed into an elite high-performance facility, and the club has achieved record consumer and commercial growth year on year, resulting in 100 per cent revenue growth since 2010.

With the establishment of Aligned Leisure and the Richmond Institute of Sports Leader-

ship Brendon has grown an increasingly diversified sports business. Importantly, the club has competed in five of the last 6 AFL Finals Series, including the drought breaking 2017 AFL Premiership – Richmond’s eleventh overall.

Cranny’s uncertain future

By Nick Creely Cranbourne's future remains up in the air after confirmation from AFL South East that it is unable to lodge an appeal against the outcome of the MPNFL Special General Meeting.

It now means that the club will be unable to join the MPNFL in 2019, leaving the Eagles without a home at this stage.

An email sent out to MPNFL clubs and to Cranbourne on Tuesday 4 September stated that "after receiving legal advice from AFL lawyers, Cranbourne were advised that the AFL Victoria Rules do not override the MPNFL Constituion in regards to the admission of new members to the league".

Originally, the 22 clubs met on 29 August to vote as to whether the Eagles would become a member club, and the News understands they got around 11 votes, or 50 per cent, which is lower than the 17-5 - or 75 per cent required to bring new clubs into the MPNFL. As a result, Seaford will be relegated to Division 2 in 2019 and the winner of the Division 2 grand final will be promoted to Division 1.

Cranbourne president Gerry Kelly recently told the News that the club believes its future lies on the Mornington Peninsula.

"We've got history with the MPNFL - we played Mornington back in 1890, and we've got four Cranbourne representatives in the Mornington Peninsula Team of the Century.

"That just proves where we belong, well from my view anyway.

"We see ourselves being part of the Mornington Peninsula for the next 50 or 100 years."

AFL South East region general manager John Anderson expressed his disappointment in the decision to the clubs, and said that he hopes the club can find a home in 2019.

"I'm devastated for Cranbourne, a community football and netball club like yourselves, that is now without a home," he said.

"AFL South East will be working closely with the Cranbourne Football Netball Club to help determine the future direction of the club.

"Cranbourne is a strong, proud and passionate club and will be a wonderful asset for the league where it participates in for 2019 and beyond."

The News understands that the Southern Football League - an option that has been floating around for the Eagles - is not a possibility, with the league understood to be comfortable with the current competition structure, meaning it is not looking to add any new clubs in the near future.

It leaves the club with the possible option of joining up with the six SEFNL clubs who are joining the newly formed 'AFL Outer East'.

The Eagles fly into Southern’s Division 2 grand final

By Hayley Wildes SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - FINALS ROUND 2 The Doveton Eagles, in their first season back in Division 2, have progressed through to the big dance. Against Highett, a barnstorming first quarter set up the Eagles' win as they piled on 6.7 (43) to 0.0 (0).

Highett simply had no answers for Doveton as former Melbourne Demons high-flyer Russell Robertson (five goals) dominated, while Nick Beer, Nick Battle and Darren Sheen (three goals each) also fired up forward.

The Eagles eventually ran out 18.20 (128) to 10.9 (69) winners and will have the chance to make it back-to-back premierships in two weeks' time.

Despite a slow start, Keysborough won through to the preliminary final after an inspired comeback win over Murrumbeena.

The Burras were down by 21 points at quarter time, but when Matthew Carnelley (six goals) kicked into gear, it was game over as he completely took over the game.

Still trailing by two points at the final break, Keysborough slammed on five goals to zero in a dominant final term to run out 14.10 (94) to 10.10 (70) winners. The Burras will meet Highett in the preliminary final on Saturday at Jack Barker Oval.

DIVISION 4 - FINALS ROUND 2 In a stunning fall from grace, Carrum Patterson Lakes - the Division 4 minor premier - was booted out of the finals in straight sets after falling to Lyndhurst in week one of the finals, and Cerberus on Saturday.

Cerberus held Carrum Patterson Lakes to just one goal in the first term and went one better in the second to hold the top team scoreless.

A 32-point half time lead was a valuable one, but it was far from over. Carrum Patterson Lakes fought hard in the third term, slotting

Devils crowned champions

By Nick Creely Beaconsfield’s picturesque Holm Park hosted the South Eastern Womens Football grand finals on Saturday, with three teams lifting the premiership cup aloft after a trio of tense, entertaining deciders.

The big match of the day - the Division 1 grand final between Eastern Devils and Seaford - went down to the wire with a mammoth crowd cheering on every tackle, mark and goal.

The top two sides on the ladder were barely separated at half time, with the Devils scoring four points and holding the Tigers scoreless.

With the pressure high and both teams struggling to find the ball in space, it was anyone’s game at the major break.

Class and goal nous of some of the Devils’ biggest stars saw them kick two goals to one in the third term, and they held a comfortable nine point advantage with a quarter to play.

And Pearcedale provided perhaps the biggest shock of the day, claiming the Division 3 title after knocking off the highly fancied Hastings, 3.9 (27) to 3.1 (19).

Incredibly, the Blues were the dominant team of the season and won five more games than the Panthers during the regular season to be undefeated and finished a whopping 22 points clear on the ladder.

But the Panthers rallied late to kick two last quarter goals and claim a memorable win, with Katie Mitchell named best afield after dominating - particularly in the second half when the game was on the line.

New chapter on the green

By Russell Bennett The Berwick Bowling Club marked the start of the new season with the opening of its new synthetic green recently.

City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett and fellow shire councillor Susan Serey were in attendance for the opening day celebrations, which began with a luncheon enjoyed by more than 170 members - in addition to the official guests.

This, of course, was followed by an afternoon game of bowls.

As is tradition, current club champions Jean Fothergill and Tony French rolled the jack and first bowl of the season respectively, while being enthusiastically cheered on by the club members.

The City of Casey council was thanked by Board Chairman Ed Wilson and Bowls Chairman Jeff Janetzkit for their contribution and continued support of the club - and in particular the new synthetic bowling green, which they had been invited to officially open.

The City of Casey councillors in attendance both spoke of their admiration for the Berwick Bowling Club and its membership, and the contribution the club makes to the broader community.

The club not only provides members with the opportunity to play Pennant and social bowls but also supports other areas of the wider community with school programs, programs for bowlers with disabilities, and has again been awarded responsibility by Bowls Victoria to run the Integrated Bowls Championship for 2019. The 'Barefoot Bowls' sessions continue to be very popular and the club runs events throughout the year for a large number of organisations including schools, businesses and various community groups.

Jean Fothergill, Cheryl Cairncross, Pat Ellis and Anne Lee prepared lunch for all those who attended the opening of the new synthetic green.

Narre Warren Bowls Club also officially opened its greens recently for the upcoming season.

About 70 bowlers, family and friends, sponsors and official guests attended the afternoon.

President Peter Groom welcomed all and announced the opening of the tendering for another synthetic green to replace the current grass. This is the forerunner to the possible roof to cover both greens in the future. The greens were opened by recently appointed life members Judy Naughton, Len O'Brien and John Uren, who rolled the first jack and bowls.

Bowls Victoria regional representative Judith Thorpe also presented Super Veteran badges for bowlers over 80 years of age to nine Narre bowlers. They included Glen Cadman, Peter Castricum, Reg Johnstone, Helen McCarthy, Rudi Pompe, Nancy Pugh, Pam Uren, Laurie Baker and John Green.

Narre Warren will again field four Saturday Pennant teams, in addition to another three on Tuesdays.

Rising for the occasion

SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - FINALS WEEK 2 Sunday was a challenge on many fronts.

The rain, intensity of the contest and the cut-throat nature of the occasion.

And it was the perfect time for Cranbourne - inspired by many of its youngest players - to find some much needed form, and to breathe life into its season.

The 12.8 (80) to 8.9 (57) win against Beaconsfield was much closer than the final scoreboard suggests - Leigh McQuillen's side looked like they could have run over the top and stolen the win at any stage.

But, the Eagles - who lost a key pillar in Troy Tharle early in the contest - dug deep and were gusty to the final siren, and put in an even performance across the board.

Cranbourne coach Steve O'Brien is the first to admit his side hasn't re-captured its early season form in the last month, but was proud that his side could overcome another injury so early into a match to find their groove.

"It's been a feature of us all year, it's been pretty common for us having injuries early in games - it obviously impacted, we weren't able to rotate our backs and forwards anywhere near as much as would," he said.

"We weren't playing great footy leading in, and we had an open and honest week in review, and everyone took it on board, and their response was fantastic."

The blockbuster clash at Toomuc Reserve was a hard grind for both sides, and finding free space was a tough task.

Returning Beacy champ Scott Meyer started forward at the opening bounce, and within minutes, the classy young Bailey Morrish had found a small window to weave some magic and kick off the match with a major.

But the Eagles quickly settled into the contest, with champion spearhead Marc Holt using his goal nous to slot two goals within minutes, and despite butchering some chances going forward, they took in a 15 point quarter time lead.

Berwick forward Harry Money was pumped after slotting a goal at Holm Park on Saturday. 184742 The pressure was extreme in the early exchanges of the second quarter, but McQuillen's side reversed the momentum, and after Riley Verbi powered through to kick a sublime goal from absolutely nowhere, they began to assert some control, but crucially couldn't make it count on the scoreboard as they reduced the deficit to just eight at half time.

With the likes of leaders in Shaun Marusic, Luke Bee-Hugo and Ryan Davey lifting their rating in the third term, as well as big man Michael Wenn who played a terrific second half, the Eagles made the most of their chances going forward, and staved off plenty of attacking thrusts by their youthful opposition to score seven goals to four after half time and advance through to a preliminary final.

O'Brien said that the injury of Tharle forced his side to re-think but was pleased with how some of his young stars - such as Corey Ellison, Kyle Nunn, Bailey Buntine and Aaron Bower - managed to handle the occasion and rise to the challenge.

Nunn was particularly eye-catching, and kicked one of the sealing goals in a dramatic final term that could have very easily gone either way.

"We were forced to throw young Corey Ellison back and forward, and into the ruck, to give Wenny (Michael Wenn) a chop out, and he was sensational for a young kid - it did impact us, but the boys were able to overcome it," he said.

"It was a really good sign - we looked a bit shaky at times in the second quarter, and that's probably partially to do with rotations, but we missed some gettable goals.

"We've made no secret that we're in a bit of a transition and introducing some young players, and we had another two debutants on the weekend (Nunn and Anthony Burr), and they played their role."

Cranbourne will now tackle Narre Warren in a preliminary final on Saturday, with the winner to take on reigning premier Berwick in the decider on 15 September.

Just a day earlier, Berwick advanced through to yet another grand after overcoming a quality Narre Warren outfit, and they are now just one win away from successfully defending their premiership crown, 11.13 (79) to 9.13 (67).

While the weather may have been stiflingly cold, there was no shortage of heat out in the middle as the two sides did battle for a place in the decider on 15 September.

Both sides had their fair share of niggle early and the game seemed destined for a stoppage to stoppage slog, but Stewart Kemperman's side got the early ascendency when a suffocating bit of pressure brought about the first major.

While big man Trent Shinners responded after converting his 50 metre penalty, the Wickers made the most of their chances and

owned the opening term, with Trent Thomas and Harrison Money - opposed to young star Ryan Quirk - kicking late goals to help their side surge out to a 13-point quarter time advantage.

After the Magpies squandered some chances going forward in the second quarter, the Wickers' control once again seeped in, with Travis Tuck helping get the game back on terms with a blistering 15-minute period that included an extraordinary dash off half back in heavy traffic.

Both sides continued to pressure the ball carrier, and after Hayden Stagg booted a team lifting goal, the dynamic Tim Gunn finished off the scoring in the half by nailing a major and giving his side a 14-point half time lead.

But it was the third quarter that was breathtaking. They continued to run in waves and eventually broke the game apart with a devastating ten-minute period, slamming on four unanswered goals to bring the margin out to 38-points.

Absolutely stunning the vocal Magpie crowd, the Wickers flexed their muscles, moving the ball with an incredible precision, with the likes of Bailey Asher, gun defenders Michael Riseley and Jo West, as well as Tuck, James Magner and Bryce Rutherford all having an enormous influence in particular.

The Magpies ran out the game and could head their head high that they had the better of the final quarter to bring the margin back to 12 at the final siren after a Mitch Cox barrel sailed through after the siren, but the ability for the Wickers to professionally ice the clock and weather the storm was impressive.

They now advance through to yet another grand final, something not lost on coach Stewart Kemperman.

"I'm rapt for the boys - as a coach, we sort of want them to realise their potential. It's an ugly word, we haven't done anything yet, but we've given ourselves an opportunity to realise it," he told the News in the aftermath of the game.

"I'm incredibly proud of them, and thrilled that they get the opportunity."

The Cavs claim the crown

By Hayley Wildes For the Casey Cavaliers' Big V Youth League 2 women's team, season 2018 was all about the chance to create; create an environment conducive to success, create team chemistry and ultimately create some history.

But, as head coach Brad Rooff explains, it was about much more than just that.

"We want to live by the mantra of C.R.E.A.T.E," he said.

"C stands for commitment, R for respect, E for effort, A for attitude, T for teamwork and E is enjoy - I said if we get the first five letters right, we'll enjoy it at the end and that is what it's all about."

When the team was crowned 2018 Big V Youth League 2 women's champions on Saturday night, it's fair to say they enjoyed the moment.

After all, they'd certainly earned it.

Facing the Frankston Blues in a best-ofthree grand final series, the Cavs -who had taken all before them in a 16-2 regular season - claimed game one on the road last weekend, 80-67, and returned home on Saturday night to finish the job.

In front of a raucous, 800-strong home crowd at Casey Stadium, the Cavs - despite their early struggles on offence - stayed in the game due to their trademark relentless defence driven by the likes of Steph Leclrec, Bec Jones and Lauren Tuplin.

Rebecca Peacock's 11 first-quarter points were vital as she put points on the board when no one else could.

Casey's second quarter offence wasn't much better - yielding just one-point in the opening 5:30 of the term.

Still, they were just five points adrift of the Blues. A couple of Kim Shankland buckets got the team going on offence and at the main break a 35-32 deficit was the challenge facing the Cavs.

As they have done all season, these Cavs relished and answered the challenge.

With captain Tess Young bringing down rebound after rebound, the Cavs began the second half on an 8-2 run and when Tuplin - who was taking control of the game - hit a triple, the Cavs held a four-point lead.

Casey weren't satisfied though. Their run continued and with just under four minutes to play in the quarter, Casey held a 52-41 lead on the back of a 20-6 run.

To Frankston's credit, they responded with some big buckets of their own and Casey held a four-point lead with one quarter standing between them and the championship.

trading buckets and with 4:13 left on the clock, scores were tied at 73-all.

With the crowd riding every play, you got the sense it was going to take something special to split the teams.

That's exactly what the crowd got.

Having surrendered the lead with oneminute to play, it was Rebecca Peacock who stepped to the fore and drained the biggest shot of the season.

Peacock's triple from the top of the key gave the Cavs a two-point lead with 50 seconds remaining and Tuplin also rose to the occasion down the stretch with two clutch buckets to seal a memorable championship win for Casey, 89-84.

Rebecca Peacock's impressive post-season was capped off with grand final series MVP honours after posting 23 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the most important game of the season.

Superstar Lauren Tuplin - who is in with a real chance of claiming league MVP honours - was sublime with 22 points, 5 steals and 3 assists, while Tess Young (17 rebounds, 15 points, 4 assists) was enormous on both ends in an inspired effort.

"It's always been the focus for us to stay strong defensively - everyone talks about the offensive structure, but defensively we wanted to make sure we made a statement." Championship-winning coach Rooff said.

Rooff's team was focused on defence and it was the process that kept them going throughout the season.

"This [win] is an end result and it's because we stayed true to ourselves the whole way through," he said.

"We took it one game at a time and stepped it out - it wasn't a case of just having big plans, it was about having mini goals along the way that we needed to achieve."

Rooff also talked about the importance of the home crowd and how his team fed off that energy.

"Oh my goodness, it was just sensational how the crowd brought the noise," he said.

"We went in at half time saying we've got the support of the crowd, we've got the support of our teammates; it's now or never - that's what it is all about."

After claiming the Youth League 2 crown, the Cavs move up to Youth League 1 next season. That's a challenge Rooff and his squad is looking forward to.

"There's a promising future here and we have aspirations of going in there and making some big noise in Youth League 1, so that's our goal."

In further Casey Big V news, the Division 1 women, after claiming the first game of their grand final series against Warrnambool, fell in games two and three at home over the weekend.

Despite the disappointment of a grand final

loss, the Cavs fought valiantly all series and fell just short of a championship. Tanarly Hood led the way, tallying 34 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists over the two home games.
