Amber Johnson is looking forward to finishing Year 12 - so that she has more time to volunteer for the Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade.

The 17-year-old Mater Christi College student from Lysterfield followed her dad into the CFA. "I'm very passionate about helping the community," she said.

"When they started the juniors program I was straight on it.

"Then I just started from there and kept going."

The junior squad caters for 11 to 16-yearolds. Amber is now a rookie and has attended a few call-outs.

Her first was a car accident up the road from the Burwood Highway fire station.

"It was a little bit scary," she said.

"But then when I got there it was fine."

She's looking forward to having more time to turn out to car accidents, washaways, fires, rescues and more once she finishes her studies.

"It's made me confident," she said of joining the brigade.

"It's made me be able to talk to more people.

"Everyone here is amazing.

"I'll be at home, I'll be maybe angry and I'll come up here and my stresses will be gone."

Amber said she spoke about becoming a CFA volunteer to her classmates and urged them to stop talking about wanting to help, and actually do it.

"I'm the only operational girl but it doesn't make a difference," she said.

"I get along with everyone."

She's also the youngest member "but it hasn't been a factor".

Amber is a little worried about the fire season ahead.

"But I've done all the coursework for it and all the practical stuff," she said.

In August, the Mail reported that Montrose 10-year-old Mia had donated $250 to the Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade through a school project and was planning a trivia night to raise another $1000.

She's locked in St Bernadette's Primary School in The Basin as the venue for the 27 October event.

The editor’s desk Our nation's leadership feels like a running joke that's passed its use-by date.

We're now up to six Prime Minister switches in eight years.

If you're struggling to name them all - let alone remember them in order - I'm sure you're not alone.

(For the record, John Howard lost to Kevin Rudd at the 2007 election. Julia Gillard successfully challenged Rudd for the leadership in 2010. Rudd reclaimed the position in 2013 but lost the election to Tony Abbott later that year. Abbott lost a leadership challenge to Malcolm Turnbull in 2015, and he lost to Scott Morrison last month.)

Like the state-level political sniping I wrote about back in July, this in-fighting and power-grabbing is causing voters to tune out.

The round-the-clock coverage on our television screens isn't helping.

A new titbit of gossip becomes an hours-long discussion in a bid to find a new angle and keep the story ticking along.

Reporters appear to be grasping at straws, desperate for a fresh take while they wait for some genuine news to emerge.

Politicians are at pains to stress their "full support" for whoever's at the helm, before bringing out the knife days later.

How can voters believe anything they say?

Politicians at all levels are being tarnished, as Yarra Ranges Councillor Tony Stevenson pointed out at last week's council meeting.

Our representatives in Canberra need to get on with the job of actually representing their constituents, and not their own aspirations and allegiances.

LETTERS Trashing a symbol I have read about the intended festooning of Puffing Billy with 10,000 poppies and the celebration as it steams into Emerald at 11am on 11 November to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Remembrance Day has always been significant to me, more so than Anzac Day, because it commemorates the many thousands who died needlessly.

It has in my time always been a solemn occasion with the single symbolic red poppy placed on the lapel or in a button hole.

The decorating of Puffing Billy with 10,000 poppies turns this into a festival event which detracts from the traditional theme of remembrance.

It trashes the symbol of remembrance and becomes a publicity stunt for a commercial tourist operator.

I'm most disappointed.

Those souls buried in France gain no solace.

Their mothers and fathers and brothers and

sisters suffered the loss of their loved ones and have all passed on themselves.

Just who is it that benefits from this circus act?

I would prefer to see the anniversary respected in the quiet solemnity of tradition.

Do we have to turn every last thing into entertainment? Even our war-dead?

Violence over vaccines Parents who decline to inject their children with vaccines have held a number of rallies in Flagstaff Gardens to protest against the laws that discriminate against their children by depriving them of early learning and preventing them from enrolling in day care.

After one of these rallies a group marched down Elizabeth Street holding banners that made it obvious that they are not fans of mandatory vaccination.

Three times during this march, the marchers were attacked and assaulted by members of the

public. One attack involved a man riding his bicycle into the crowd and injuring a woman; another involved a man punching a 10-year-old girl in the head, and the other involved a man grabbing a poster from a woman and knocking her over.

We presume that the attack on the 10-yearold girl was prompted by the man's belief that the girl had not been injected with all 39 vaccines on the pre-school schedule, and consequently was brewing dangerous diseases.

The irony of this is that the attacker has himself not been injected with 39 vaccines, because there were not 39 vaccines on the schedule when he was a child.

So according to his rationale, he is as much of a threat to the public as the girl is.

The parents of the girl considered laying charges against her attacker because they know that the street is covered by CCTV, and they know that the police do not behave in a bigoted manner towards people who do not believe in the religion of vaccination.

However, they decided not to proceed with

laying charges because of the bullying that the girl would be likely to face if the matter became publicised.

The politicians who in their ignorance voted in favour of the No Jab No Play law have created a social climate in which a man feels justified in punching a girl in the head, and the parents feel too frightened to seek justice.

One politician who voted in favour of No Jab No Play did not know that a vaccine for hepatitis B vaccine exists, let alone that it is made of genetically engineered yeast and is injected into babies on the day of birth.

Another such politician was surprised to learn that MMR is not the only vaccine on the childhood schedule.

Ignorant politicians feel they have the right to do away with known medical contraindications, to deprive children of early learning, and to make people give up their jobs and go on the dole because they can't access day care.

Some clear advice for the fire season

Upper Ferntree Gully Fire Brigade Captain Peter Smith is warning Dandenong Ranges residents to clean up their properties ahead of the fire season.

"Anything smaller that your little finger is called fine fuel," he explained.

CFA officials are predicting an early, long, dry summer and high fire danger.

So Capt Smith urged everyone in the hills to start their clean-up early, too.

"They must understand where they live, the environment they live in and how it's going to treat us when something happens," he said.

"If your block's dirty, it's going to treat you poorly if a fire comes through.

"Clean up your own block and also talk to your neighbour.

"Go and ask them 'do you need a hand?'.

"If they're burning off they must notify authorities to tell them that they're burning."

He said a call or email to the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority (ESTA) would save firefighters from turning out to false alarms.

Capt Smith also urged Dandenongs residents to practice their fire plan.

"Complacency is our biggest problem," he said.

"What is the route they're going to take if they need to get away from the area?

"They need to have an alternate route of getting out if needed, and they've got to practice it.

"Public transport users up our way need to

understand they're not going to have any public transport on really bad days.

"They're going to have an alternate route.

"One of the biggest issues we have here is the clogging of the road network.

"It takes 16 hours on a good day to clear the hill.

"That's with just general traffic."

He said parents needed to consider whether their child's school would be closed, and pet owners needed to think about where their furry friends would be.

Capt Smith said everyone should ensure they have copies of their medical records, insurance records, banking details and other important information.

"People have got to start preparing now," he said.

Body cams for Emerald cops Emerald police will be wearing cameras by the end of the year.

Victoria Police announced on Thursday 30 August that body worn cameras would roll out to about 800 police at 59 stations following a pilot in Ballarat and Epping.

Police officers wear the tool on their uniform to record video and audio evidence.

Cardinia Inspector Shane Smith said general duties uniform police and highway patrol officers would be wearing them from later this year.

"The introduction of body worn cameras is expected to deliver benefits to police and communities within Cardinia Shire," he said.

"Some of these benefits include capture of video and audio evidence, increases in guilty pleas and successful prosecutions, better outcomes for victims and witnesses, faster complaint resolution and improved community and police safety."

Insp Smith said the evaluation process following the pilot established that police training had worked well and the police members were comfortable using the technology.

"Legislation allowing body worn cameras to record family violence victim statements as evidence in chief was enacted on 23 August with a commencement date to be confirmed in the near future," he said.

Emerald's garden centre is no more, but its closure is driving heated debate in the township.

The Emerald and District Co-operative Society closed the Mitre10 Garden Centre's doors for the final time on Friday 31 August, after the site owner sold the land to the SES. The Mail received emails and calls from several people claiming to be co-op members who were unhappy with the sale process.

They claimed that the State Government and Monbulk MP James Merlino had "swooped in" and "trumped the (co-op) offer at the last minute". The Mail has confirmed through several sources that this is untrue.

Victoria SES spokesman Matt Gallant said the organisation was a legitimate participant in the tender process and made a successful bid in accordance with a Valuer General's assessment.

"All land purchased by VICSES adheres to the State Government land monitor purchasing approval process," he said.

"This purchase followed an extensive investigation, which determined the current Emerald SES site could not accommodate the required development and an alternative site would need to be sought."

The "co-op member" also claimed the group had recently made other decisions without consulting stakeholders.

Emerald and District Co-operative Society CEO Len O'Donnell said there was no co-op member by the name this person provided, and that they had tried to post "many untruths" on the Emerald and Surrounds Facebook site.

"It was along with three other attempts via fake names and same article not published by the moderator," he said.

The new Emerald SES headquarters is due to open mid next year.

This enclosure would give your cat access to its favourite spots whilst retaining the ability to retreat inside via a window or cat door, to escape the weather or any potential threats.

This can be constructed from a light frame covered by netting or purchased ready-made.

Knitting for kids

By Casey Neill Knitters filled the Silvan Hall with hand-made toys and clothing bound for war-ravaged Syria.

Aussies Knitting for War-Affected Kids members from around Australia had been sending their finished woollen pieces to a coordinator in Belgrave South.

A small team converged on the hall last Wednesday 29 August to sort through the garments and toys, and package them for children in need.

"Last year we shipped over 700 hand knits," Marg Willis from Ferny Creek said.

"This year we expect to nearly double that number."

The Australian Syrian Association Victorian branch will transport and distribute the items.

"Many of our knitters are regular prize winners at shows around the country," Ms Willis said.

"You're always looking for somewhere for it to go, to do some good.

"Syrian winters are brutal and these children are usually living in tents.

"Generally their only source of warmth is kerosene heaters so it is important to use natural fibres that will not melt if they come into contact with a flame."

Liz Irving made the trip over from Adelaide to prepare the shipment.

The project started with a message to an online knitting group.

She was heading to Kurdistan for work and had room in her suitcase.

"People are generous and caring and feel that they want to express care for kids in other parts of the world who have suffered so greatly," Ms Irving said.

"This is a tangible way that they can do that.

"We are a group that's been going for about 15 months."

Gold for the hills at Wushu The peaceful surrounds of the Dandenongs provide a perfect backdrop for practicing the ancient arts of tai chi and qigong.

Students from Chi Generation, which runs classes in Upwey, Belgrave and Tecoma and weekend retreats in Warburton, were among the winners at the 20th Wushu Tai Chi and Qigong Festival held at Monash University in August.

With local and interstate competitors from 15 schools, ranging in ages from 8 to 84 years old, the festival aimed to develop tai chi and qigong, the martial and healing arts across Australia.

"It is a really big challenge to a lot of people to get up on a stage and compete but it gives a big boost to their confidence and self-esteem," Su Rule from Chi Generation said.

Her school entered students in group and individual events and came home with three gold and one silver medal for their performances.

These skills are usually practiced in quiet settings, so Ms Rule said the festival's noisy atmosphere was a strong test of the entrants' ability to maintain focus and concentration.

Last year they prepared the shipment from a member's Belgrave South home.

"In the 10 months since then we have just snowballed," she said.

"We needed more space. "We wanted to get together as a group to sort it, and to put it on display."

They invited community groups, including Silvan Primary School, to take a look at their work and hear their story.

"These kids have suffered terribly," Ms Irving said.

"They deserve our very best efforts now."

Emerald Secondary jumps for joy The Emerald Secondary College sport aerobics squad flew to Queensland to compete in the National Championships on Thursday 9 August.

The Federation of International Sports Aerobics and fitness competition attracts athletes from all over the country and despite a tough year, the Emerald Secondary solo team placed eighth in their division and won the National School Spirit title.

The school’s solo athlete also competed against a number of state champions to become the National Solo Champion.

Coach and principal Jodie Doble said she was extremely proud of the girls and explained the hard work the team had put in in the leadup to the event.

“Sports aerobics involves competitors performing continuous, complex and high intensity movement patterns to music,” she said.

“There’s high level competitive skills involved...they have to do straddle jumps, angel jumps, tuck jumps, wolf jumps."

An elected Liberal Nationals Government will contribute $600,000 towards Stage 2 of the redevelopment of Monbulk Football Netball Club.

Stage 2 of the upgrade will consist of fitting out the existing pavilion and community hub, constructing a new car park and asphalting the perimeter, relocating the playground and upgrading the skate park.

Parks Victoria is encouraging people to visit gardens in the Dandenong Ranges this spring.

Parks Victoria area chief ranger Craig Albiston said visitors came from far and wide to see the floral displays in the hills.

"We know from research that time spent in parks is good for our physical, mental, social and spiritual health," he said.

Parks Victoria manages seven gardens in the region, including the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden filled with rhododendrons and azaleas that bloom until November.

Other gardens include the George Tindale Memorial Garden, Pirianda Garden, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden, William Ricketts Sanctuary, RJ Hamer Arboretum and Mount Dandenong Arboretum.

The gardens are open daily and entry is free of charge.

The program helps recipients to stay healthy through nutrition-guaranteed meals and provides priceless social contact for the isolated.

Mayor Len Cox and Councillor Tony Stevenson met Meals on Wheels volunteers the council's Lilydale depot on National Meals on Wheels Day, Wednesday 29 August.

They joined them on the road for their deliveries.

Rosemary and John Haysom from Mooroolbark learn a lot about the lives and families of those they deliver to.

"I think the important part is the contact," John said.

"A lot of them are on their own.

"They don't see anyone else."

Rosemary got involved when she retired in 2003, and she and John both hit the road each Wednesday.

"It's how we tell what day of the week it is!"

John laughed.

David Gibson from Mooroolbark retired at 63 and started volunteering with Meals on Wheels to qualify for Newstart Allowance.

"I had friends who'd been involved with Meals on Wheels in Knox," he said.

That was six years ago.

"At 65 I didn't even bother stopping," he said.

David enjoys meeting people.

"I know two or three people that I'm the only person they see," he said.

"But the biggest issue with our meals service is getting people to know about it and understand what our service is all about," she said.

"They are so many meal services out there but they don't cater for dietary requirements."

Ms Larner said people aged 70-plus years needed three times the protein they did when they were younger.

She said not getting enough protein led to muscle-loss and can be a factor in dementia.

"So many elderly people are malnourished," she said.

She said this could lead to falls and hospital admissions.

"If people are healthy and active, it's priceless," she said.

Prospective Meals on Wheels recipients must register with My Aged Care for assessment.

Spill’s flow-on effect Yarra Ranges Councillor Tony Stevenson gave politicians in Canberra a serve at the Tuesday 28 August council meeting, following the Liberal Party leadership spill. He said the leadership changes from both sides of politics over the past 10 years “doesn’t reflect well on this nation”.

“It does diminish the way people see the value of elected officials such as ourselves,” he said.

“We’ve got a very special set of people here.

Olivia sings again

By Michael Doran Upwey South Primary's Olivia Hibbins is preparing for her fifth consecutive year of performing in the annual Victorian State Schools Spectacular.The Year 6 student will step onto the Hisense Arena stage in a cast of 3000 young performers assembled from more than 200 Victorian schools.

This year Olivia will be singing in the select 44-member performing arts unit choir, having emerged through a selection process that started with 350 aspirants.

She started performing in these shows in Year 2 and told the Mail that what she enjoyed most was "hearing all the harmonies come together on stage, as well as making lots of new friends who have the same passion as me".

Talking about how she has progressed over the years, she said: "I started in the mass choir which had 1500 people, and that was very different to the choir I am in this year.

"We have 24 songs to sing and have been rehearsing every Saturday for three hours since February."

Olivia added that the rehearsals were a lot of fun but heaps of hard work, and she would miss it when she moved to senior school next year.

With 31 students in the production, teacher Penelope Lang said Upwey South Primary and its community strongly valued its association with the arts.

She said there were "many learning benefits that come with stimulating the brain through the arts".

"Working through the production process develops qualities like resilience, patience, cooperation and the value of hard work," she said.

This year's production is titled With the Beat and there will be two performances on

The Tecoma, Upwey South, Badger Creek, Dixons Creek, Gladysdale, Mount Evelyn, Macclesfield, Emerald, Yarra Glen and Upper Ferntree Gully primary schools have students in the mass choir.

Upwey South and Monbulk also have students in the mass dance.

The 1st Ferny Creek Scouts received a cheque from the Dandenong Ranges RSL to help them join the Australian Jamboree next year.

The jamboree is a 10-day adventure to be held in South Australia in January.

The scouts received the cheque in July during an evening at the RSL, and also learnt about what the sub-branch does for the community.

Dandenong Ranges RSL president Bob Richards also shared with them his personal story, as the former captain of HMAS Cerberus, and the story of his grandfather's service in World War I. Mr Richards said the RSL was grateful to have the opportunity to return the support the scout group had provided the RSL over the years.

"When we heard of the difficulties faced by one of their troop we knew we had to help out where we could," he said.

"The annual scout jamboree is a fantastic opportunity for the local kids to attend and further develop the values they share with the RSL of citizenship, community support and respect."

Dandenong Ranges RSL vice-president Keith Baker said that as a committee, they supported the whole community.

"One of the kids in the scouts group's dad recently passed away," he said.

"We made sure we covered all of his costs for the jamboree, so he could enjoy his time at the event."

Mr Baker said the scouts took a real interest in Mr Richards' story and the RSL during the evening.

Country bands get behind SES funds

By Kath Gannaway The Upwey Country Music Club returns to Healesville on Sunday, 16 September, for the Annual Healesville SES Fundraiser Show.

The show has been a great crowd-pleaser for almost a decade, and raised valuable funds for the Healesville State Emergency Service.

The UCMC house band, Up Country Band, will lead a program of artists including The Reflections, Pott Luck, The James Gang, Harmonics, Grandsons Of The Pioneers, Leanne Le Frantz and Movin' On for a packed afternoon of country music.

Band member Graham Chasemore said the event is a favourite with the UCMC band and with other country music performers.

"We go to the RSL in Healesville every year with continuous music from 12.30pm to 5pm which includes classic country, some bluegrass and some folk; it really depends on the artists who come along on the day," Graham said.

As the event has cemented itself in the local country music circuit, the audience has grown in popularity with Yarra Ranges country music enthusiasts as well as drawing keen fans from the suburbs.

Graham said the club enjoys the opportunity to help local organisations such as the SES doing shows on a regular basis for other emergency services, at nursing homes and at other charity fundraisers.

Kids helping other kids

By Alice Rennison Kids will have the opportunity to run alongside Thomas the Tank Engine in the annual Kids Fun Run with Thomas.The Rotary Club of Emerald and District organises the event, which is open to children aged from three to 12 years.

They can run courses from 150 metres to 1200 metres on 25 November.

Kids Fun Run with Thomas chair John Henderson said the run was about kids helping kids.

He said children understood other children might be less fortunate.

"It's encouraging children to become good citizens and to give back to the community," he said.

"Registrations and donations have been open for a week now.

"One girl has already donated nearly $400 already."

This year the run is raising money for the Monash Children's Cancer Centre, which provides a range of services to treat childhood and adolescent blood diseases and cancer.

"We contacted 10 primary schools in the region and they voted for the centre," he said.

"The kids fun run raises money for different charities, nearly every year."

It has raised more than $575,000 since it started in 2002.

"In our first year we had 250 children participating," Mr Henderson said.

"In 2017 we had 600 children participate and raised $43,000."

Mr Henderson said the event was also lots of fun.

Disco queen’s on her way

Singer and performer Marcia Hines will perform at the Burrinja Cultural Centre in Upwey at 8pm on Friday 21 September.

Ms Hines' career spans five decades, including releasing 22 albums and selling 3.6 million copies.

She has performed in theatre productions including Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Big River, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and Jerry's Girls.

"She'll have back-up singers and dancers," he said.

Raptors’ remarkable run

By Judy Kennedy The Monbulk Rangers Raptors finished the season just one point behind the Under-12 Wallabies Boys East winners Mooroolbark Soccer Club in an exciting climax to their first year in professional Football Federation Victoria (FFV) competition.

The Raptors, coached by Rob de Wit, scored 74 goals to Mooroolbark's 71 but lost one game to end on 41 points, just one behind Mooroolbark's 42.

De Wit, who also plays in the successful Monbulk Rangers Knights team in the Victorian Churches Football Association (VCFA), said he was proud of his team's efforts.

"We had half a dozen boys who had played together as under-11s in the VCFA competition last year but the rest of the team were new and they came together really well," he said.

"It's a fantastic result in our first season, to come second by a point in a division with 13 teams."

In the FFV Boys East Under-13B division, Monbulk Rangers Lions also lost only one game for the season but the competition was so tight that they came in third, behind the winners Ringwood City FC and second-placed Manningham United.

On Sunday 2 September the Lions held Ringwood to a 1-1 draw, the only team to do so in the season.

"You know the competition is tight when there's only five points covering the top three teams," coach Tony Briggs said.

"Our only loss for the season was to Manningham United 0-1 in the final two minutes of our game, and that's testament to the Lions' strength and determination."

In the Saturday VCFA competition, Monbulk's under-17 Salamanders clinched the championship by defeating Maroondah 4-1.

Monbulk's under-13 Tigers and under-12 Wizards both won cups in the C-division, while the under-10 Wasps took home the cup for B-division.

Yarra Ranges Athletics to the fore in half marathon

By Jamie Strudley Some stellar results were had by a small team of Yarra Ranges Athletes at the Athletics Victoria XCR18 Burnley Half Marathon on the weekend of 1 September.

The day was cool, clear and still - perfect conditions for fast times - and the team took advantage of this.

First off were the juniors in the 5 kilometre.

Stand-out results were Kiara Flavel's second in the girls under-14 and Harry Norman's second in the mens under-18 and third place overall.

Several of the juniors recorded personal best times, including Max Savill-Bentley who

came agonisingly close to a sub-17 with 17.01.

The open athletes competed over four laps of the 5km course.

The first man home was Seamus Dwyer in a smashing 1.17.06 and the first lady was Lauren Starr, storming home to a time of 1.24.24.
