MORE TO LOVE The editor’s desk I don't know about you, but the plants at my place are looking a whole lot brighter after the weekend's drenching. A much-needed 22mm of rain was recorded in the official Bureau of Meteorology rain gauge at Tewantin on Sunday, and 4.4mm on Saturday, the first real rain we've had since June. It came as a welcome relief, but we'll need more of the same soon to wet the soil again. Keen gardeners heading along to the Noosa Botanic Gardens Plant Fair this weekend will be hoping for some more rain, but there will be plenty of landscape enhancers on show that don't require watering. Turn to page 13 to find out about some of the unexpected pieces of garden art that will be on display. YELLOW AND WITH A SMILE BY TESSA MAPSTONE Bright yellow balloons and big smiles were catching eyes in Noosa Junction on Friday as the staff at Energy Hair Co supported a cause close to their hearts. Owner Tanya Walsh, Yvonne Silbery and Candice Younger have been no strangers to cancer. So on Daffodil they transformed the salon, and themselves, to raise money for cancer research. "We have had a lot of our clients in the past few years become ill to cancer," Tanya said. "Unfortunately we've lost some, and we've had some other come through and out the other side." Tanya has been there as those going through treatment have faced the loss of their hair, and go through "the shave". "What is see as a woman's beauty, her crown and glory, so to speak, has to be taken away," she said. "I've gone through that journey with them, and all the way through their treatment."

Noosa's short board riders are shining at the national level with junior surfer Cooper Davies being crowned Australia's men's surfing champion. The 18-year-old won the prestigious 2018 Australian Open Men's Championship at the Australian Surf Festival on the Tweed Coast. His close mate from Peregian Beach, Noah Stocca, also 18, took out third place in the competition. Noah made a near-perfect 9.00 ride in his opening. Meanwhile in the Open Women's competition Sunrise Beach's Amber Dods took out fourth place. The win means Cooper would be eligible to compete in the World Titles.

BILL LODGE "We decided we needed to make people more award about cancer, and to get more people to help with fundraising for research. "All of us one way or another, are going to be impacted by cancer at some point." Next door to the salon, the team at Clo Studios joined in supporting Daffodil Day, and sending hope to those who have been
affected by cancer. Tanya said donations had been coming in thick and fast, and she hoped this would be the beginning of something even bigger. "This will be a yearly event at Energy Hair Co and hopefully all of Lanyana Way will join us," she said.
The passing of Bill Lodge has come as sad news to many. Bill last week lost his battle with cancer. Julien Pitt said Bill would be sadly missed by the Noosa Tigers, of whom he was a staunch supporter."Bills reporting skills and media expertise was ahead of his time and he did some wonderful work with our footy club in the late '90s, and in particular the yearbook he produced for the 1997 premiership year," he said."He will be sadly missed." 201721004-LB21-17

he has forged a unique path, spent three years travelling around Australia in a caravan with her family, created a sharing economy, and now an online community to empower women in business. Kym Foster does not let anything hold her back, but it took the death of a friend and her mother's cancer diagnosis to make her realise life was too short to be
a passenger on the merry-go-round of corporate work and daily chores. By the time Kym turned 30 she was a busy mum with an 18-month-old son, working full time as a lawyer. She and her husband Andrew had been at a friend's funeral the day she decided things had to change. "It was like I had an epiphany," Kym said. "I thought, life's too short, we've got a son in childcare full time, the weekends are just slipping away and we're busy just food

shopping and cleaning and stuff like that. "I was working long hours and bringing work home, and my husband was too, and I just thought 'this sort of sucks really, this is going to be the rest of our lives, why do people do this?'" Kym said she used to think she valued having the beautiful house and new cars, until she realised she would have to keep living a life that made her unhappy in order to have them. "That's the compromise where you say

'look, I know we need certain things in our life but I'm not going to die for them, I'm not going to put myself through this sort of lifestyle in order to have them'," she said. So Kym and Andrew quit their jobs, sold their Wellington Point home, bought a caravan and hit the road with two-year-old Hunter in tow. Their planned year-long lap around Australia turned into a three-year odyssey that has changed the course of Kym's life.

On the road the family felt a sense of freedom they could not have found within the daily grind at home. "The freedom of where you go and how long you spend there, the freedom of being able to leave, freedom in relation to time, freedom in relation to expectations and judgment," she said. "When you're travelling a lot you can just get up because you've woken up and it's a beautiful morning and you get out and go for a walk and it doesn't matter what time you get back, and then you'll do what we need to do next. "There's a multitude of amazing experiences that you would not have any other way, and it's those daily experiences - the littlest thing you might see that day, even the people you meet - that make it so special. Kym and Andrew went into their trip with a range of skills under their belts and a willingness to do anything from legal services to tiling and cleaning toilets to top up their kitty along the way. They had no trouble finding work, and it was that openness to using whatever tradable skills she had that later inspired Kym to create Shareshop. The family set up home in Sunshine Beach at the end of their trip, Kym gave birth to their second child, Amity, and launched Shareshop. Shareshop became an online community hub allowing members to trade their skills, talents, goods and services using points instead of money. "The idea for Shareshop would not have come up without the trip, I don't think," Kym said "I would have just gone back to being a lawyer, I wouldn't have had the time to think about what I was missing. I'd be back at work earning good money with two children in day care this time. "To me that was sacrificing a lot of things that we had then made part of our lifestyle." Seven years after Shareshop's creation, Kym has made the decision to shift the focus to the needs of its core members women in business. And so Shebux was born. After its launch in mid-September, Shebux - a private economy for women in business - will replace Shareshop and offer more to its members. "Fundamentally it's a membershipbased community for women in business to connect, then using our online marketplace they promote their product or service and buy and see from each other using our own currency of Shebux," Kym said. Kym is preparing to take her family, and her online business, on the road. private economy can provide you can not be found elsewhere, and I know that from having seven years' experience in the same situation. "Now I have honed that model so it can really boom and provide future benefits." As well as creating an exclusive online marketplace, Shebux will be a place where entrepreneurs can find support and insights to empower them and drive their own business success. "We're building a sisterhood here," Kym said. "It's a big ugly world out there with competition in business, and businesses are suffering. "They're having to multitask in areas of social media and marketing that are perhaps not the crux of their business and not their forte, and they're spending lots of time on that. "So this is a sisterhood with heart, that we actually care but we're savvy. We want to succeed in business too, so hey, we'll have the best of both worlds." A second lap Ten years after Kym, Andrew and Hunter (now 12 years old) set off on their roundAustralia adventure, the family is preparing to hit the road again, this time with Amity, 7, and Archie, 2. "For us the key is the quality of time that our kids get to spend with both parents," Kim said.

Things will be a little bit different this time around. Kym plans run her online business from the road and promote it around the country, leaving Andrew free to take time out from work. "I'm really looking forward to bringing Shebux to some communities where they really need this too, especially in rural and remote places," she said. "There's people there that have awesome skills and talents, they might just not fit the mould. "I'm so appreciative that Andrew is supporting me in this new venture, and that he hasn't said 'look love you're a lawyer, I think you should go back and earn some money'." It has been the unwavering support of her husband that has allowed Kym the chance to support other women in business through their journey, and to run Shareshop for seven years. "He's just like 'yeah I believe in you, I believe in what you're doing, you're trying to make the planet a better place, so that's more important than money," she said. "I'm very blessed, I think I am a risk taker because of the support I have around me." Packing up a life and taking a family on the road, and starting unconventional ventures have some things in common: they both involve risks, thinking outside the box
and require determination. "It's definitely been challenging," Kym said. "But if I believe in it enough I will find a way to make it work. "There were 100 excuses why not to do it but I just kept working and working until I found the answers. "I just believe that in a way we can be whatever we want to be and do whatever we want to do, we've just got to find the way. "You've got to have the desire - it's got to be stronger than those opposing forces." It's that drive and open-mindedness that has led Kym to where she is today. "I never would have envisaged being here," she said. "When I left school, when I left uni, and became a lawyer, I never would have thought I'd be travelling around Australia and starting some online community for women in business. "It was not in my plan. I was going to be a barrister." Now she wants to make Shebux and Australia-wide exclusive network that supports women in business, and maybe one day even go global. "I want women in business know that they're not alone and that there is an easier way. I want to really create this community to be reckoned with," she said. â—?

NOOSA SENIORS GETTING WITH IT BY TESSA MAPSTONE When Annie Stuart's children booked her a ticket to visit them in Europe she realised it was time to make some changes to her lifestyle. "I thought I've got six moths, I can't go looking like this," she said. The inspiring senior went from doing almost no regular exercise in recent times, to doing classes at the Noosa Leisure Centre six days a week, as well as walking long distances every day. She has made changes to her health and fitness with the help of the My Health For Life program, through regular group meetings. The My Health For Life program provides eligible Queensland adults with free group-based or telephone health coaching over a six month period, to guide them through simple healthy lifestyle changes. As well as supporting people to enjoy benefits such as weight loss, increased energy and healthier eating, the Queensland Government-funded prevention program can also help lessen people's risk of type two diabetes, heart disease and stroke. More than 5000 Queenslanders have joined the program since it launched last year. Their goals are extremely personal, but all of them have been successful in achieving many of their health goals, including lessening their risk of developing chronic disease.

have the added benefit of therapy dog in training Wally's company and comic relief. "I'm trying to do something a bit different with Wally, and engage with people through pet therapy," she said. Vivienne Parker, like Annie, has been attending group sessions at Noosaville, run by Erica. "The group setting gives you the social element too, and you keep each other accountable," she said. "And if you're having a bad day the support is there." My Health For Life support officer for Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast Primary Health Network, Molly Blain, said it was often best to make simple, considered changes to your health. "Don't think in terms of overhauling your lifestyle straight away because it will make you feel like it is too big a challenge," she said. "Instead, work on being a healthier version of your current self. "Start with swapping a few bad habits with some good ones and focus on making healthier choices wherever you can. "It might not seem much, but before too long these little changes add up and can make a big difference to your overall health." ART MEETS FASHION Art and fashion are set to collide on the runway this week, the first taste of what's to come at next year's Australian Wearable Art Festival. Runway Art will bring together acclaimed fashion designers, wearable art masterpieces, designer workshop stations and fashion parades at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi on August 31. The renowned Peter Dwyer, senior academic of the prestigious Whitehouse Institute of Design and previously fashion design head of Karl Von Busse Institute of Design, will co-present with Cindy Vogels, acclaimed fashion designer to the stars. "I draw inspiration from what's on-hand, thrown out, recycled or just plain fun and I'm always looking for materials that have a sense of authenticity, have their original features or unexpected characteristics," Mr Dwyer said. One work that may be partly created on stage on the night is made from discarded shade cloth. "The strip of cloth was found with the original fastening straps and huge industrial eyelets for passing ropes through. Immediately I saw these features as a neckline and by passing a new rope through the existing casing, I could gather up the strip into a dynamic ruffle." "I have a studio full of other strange prototype experiments and exciting 'materials' not previously destined for the body. I am looking forward to bringing some of these pieces to life in Eumundi." Best known for her work as a contributing designer for Lady Gaga, Cindy Vogels' pieces
are all meticulously handcrafted and she has a special interest in slow fashion or works that are ethically created. "I love working at this unique intersection of fashion and costumery and I am particularly excited to see that next year's event will have sustainability and 'trashion' categories where people will need to think creatively about working with reusable materials and how a garment might last over time," Ms Vogels said. "In the Runaway event we will be looking at how everyday materials and recycled materials can be used to create something extraordinary and how we can push the boundaries of fashion into the realm of sculpture." Ms Vogels will also be showcasing a much anticipated new work entitled Lady of The Light, an exploration of how certain fabrics respond to black light. Six local artists - Yanni van Zijl, Faith Tawhai, Karen Jones, Larissa Salton, Lucy Yule and Kait Manchip - will have designer stations on the night where they will be working on individual headpieces as well as displaying their own wearable art works. Pendragron Shoes will also display their wearable art footwear in a static display. Runaway Art will be on 31 August from 6.30pm at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi. FROM LITTLE THINGS BIG THINGS GROW - IN PIECES Alan Falls had been accustomed to a 12 by 6 metre shed with a bed in one corner, a kitchen in another, and an ideal artists studio space. That was until the artist found himself without a studio a couple of years ago. In his search for a new way to work, the Australian artist Imants Tillers came to mind. Tillers works on small panels to create very large pieces. With this artist as inspiration and borrowing from techniques used by many street artists Alan has developed a process suiting his living situation, artwork style and interests. Alan took up residency at the Pomona Railway Station Gallery on 10 August, and will be working in the Banana Shed in preparation for his solo exhibition in the Carriage Room until 13 September. His solo exhibition runs from 8 September to 10 October. Visitors are welcome to come to the gallery to view and discuss Alan's work and techniques while he is working in the Banana Shed. COOROY BELLI ROAD WORKS Nearly 18 months after heavy rain from Tropical Cyclone Debbie caused destabilisation of Cooroy Belli Road, resulting in a landslip, the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments have contributed more than $84,500 for roadworks. GOING POTTY AT NOOSA GARDENS You would not normally expect to find personality chooks and bathing beauties at the Noosa Botanic Gardens, but that is exactly what you will find there on September 2. The Noosa Botanic Gardens Plant Fair will showcase a range of quirky creations at the annual fundraiser. Creative ceramicist and potter, Wendy Britton's pottered creations adorn many a patio, garden and swimming pool terrace. "I often give many of my creations a name," she said. "Especially the chooks because, as poultry owners will tell you, they all have such unique personalities." Wendy will also be bringing along her recently-created series, Bathing Beauties, colourful in their bespoke togs and just the thing to add to your pool landscape. For those seeking larger statement pieces for the garden, Natalia and Duncan Broadhead from Broadcroft Designs will be bringing along some of their fabulous metalwork creations. To maximise quality and minimize impact, they make everything themselves using Australian made materials and local suppliers. And for something very special, Shane Christensen, a skilled wood carver who uses fallen trees, stumps and old fence posts, will create a habitat for native bees from a previously-felled

feather tail glider or micro bat. Shane subsequently reduced the entrance hole size to suit a stingless native bee. All proceeds from the fair will go back into the Noosa Botanic Gardens. The fair will open at 9am. â—?

UNITYWATER MOVES TO PLUG THE LEAK BY TESSA MAPSTONE A leak in the Pomona water reservoir which has had some residents concerned will be fixed by the end of the week (31 August). Pomona resident Marion Dickson said she first noticed water "pouring out" of the reservoir about six weeks ago when walking
the Mt Cooroora trail, and was upset it had not yet been fixed. "We walk the mountain almost every day and I go up there and I check it out and the leak's getting worse, it's just running down the road," she said. "I think it's just shocking especially
because we're in drought. "I'm not on town water, I'm on tank water, so water to me is very precious." Unitywater executive manager customer delivery, Rob Dowling, said the leak had been assessed as very slow, with minimal water loss.
"It is a tricky repair as it requires a confined space entry," he said. "We thank the community for their patience as we complete these works with the safety of our people in mind. Mr Dowling thanked Pomona residents for reporting the leak. ●
GRANTS TO BOOST RSL ADVOCACY SERVICES Local RSL sub-branches will receive grants for advocacy and welfare services to veterans, serving members of the Australian Defence Force and their families, war widows and widowers. The Cooroy Pomona RSL Sub-branch will receive $20,600 and the Tewantin Noosa RSL Sub-branch $18,600, in grants from the Federal Government. Wide Bay MP Llew O'Brien said the grants would ex-service organisations to continue to provide help, advice and support to the veteran community. "The ... grants support ex-service organisations, making a real difference in the lives of veterans and ADF personnel, by providing essential services from a trusted source," he said. "The funds help pension and welfare officers to provide assistance to veterans, war widows and widowers, as well as current and former Defence members and their dependants, when lodging claims with
the Department of Veterans' Affairs, or pursuing an appeal. "The grants will be used to help fund salaries for trained advocates and pension staff, office supplies, computer equipment, internet access and other administrative needs." ●

FINE DINING FOR A GOOD CAUSE BY TESSA MAPSTONE For 25 years The KIDS Foundation has been supporting children with horrific injuries and educating and empowering little ones. To celebrate the milestone anniversary, and enable it to run a 2019 recovery program in Noosa, the foundation is getting set to host it's Dine in White event on September 1. KIDS founder and director, Susie O'Neill, said the Noosa community had already raised more than $40,000 for local projects. "KIDS has a long and strong connection with Noosa and the Sunshine Coast," she said. "The Dine in White concept allows us to share the love by not asking too much from one individual. "We hope the community gives back by visiting the restaurants that have supported us. "The money raised at this year's Dine in
White will mean we can hold a KIDS camp in Noosa in 2019 which supports people living with life-changing injuries, trauma and burns. "It will also mean KIDS can deliver our internationally recognised safety education program to all kindergartens across the Sunshine Coast." This year 15 local restaurants - including Wasabi, Noosa Waterfront, Italian Marina, Peppers Noosa Resort & Villas and RACV Noosa Resort - will donate a dining experience for 10 people, followed by an after-party held in a secret location and an auction. HELPING OZHARVEST EXPAND ITS CARING FOUR years on from its humble beginning in 2014, OzHarvest Sunshine Coast now delivers more than 7000kg of surplus quality food each month to 30 local charities, schools, community centres, churches and community programs. As OzHarvest celebrates its fourth birthday, Nomads Golf Sunshine Coast is chipping in to help OzHarvest extend its capacity to bring goodness to the region. OzHarvest had grown from a small local
operation with three volunteers to more than 50 volunteers. MUSIC STUDENTS SHINE BRIGHT Performers from St Teresa's Catholic College snagged a swag of accolades at the Queensland Catholic Music Festival. 50 talented students playing in four ensembles travelled to Villanova College, Coorparoo for the event, that was the largest festival of its kind in the Asia-Pacific Region. It was an opportunity for young musicians to showcase their ability in front of nationally-recognised adjudicators. With more than 100 schools and colleges bring over 14,000 students, the QCMF covers a diverse range of genres within the classical and contemporary styles. St Teresa's participated in the Concert Band, Vocal Ensemble, Stage Band, and the ever-popular Soul Collective performed in the Contemporary Ensemble. The Concert Band improved with each of their songs, with their final song being conducted by Year 10 student Rohan Kerrigan. It was his first time conducting in a competition, and he did a fantastic job, with the band earning silver for their performance. One of the highlights of the day was having Soul Collective perform on the outdoor Quadrangle Stage. As soon as they began to play, people were drawn in by the professional standard of their music. The judges remarked that this band "made their day!"
BIG SUCCESS UP ON TOP
Rohan Kerrigan leads the Concert Band on its way to silver at QCMF. Not only did they win a gold award, but all three singers were awarded personal Awards of Excellence. The Vocal Ensemble, led by Charly Bradshaw, performed in St James Church, making the most of the natural acoustics in this beautiful building. With a more contemporary selection than some of their peers, they too won a silver award. The final performance was by Stage Band, who performed in the evening, after waiting for the entire day for their timeslot. They were outstanding and fittingly also won a gold award. The teamwork, camaraderie and support
amongst all of the musicians and staff was evident in their performances and noted by the adjudicators. It was obvious that St Teresa's vision for the music program translates into the joy the students have for playing music, not to mention their success. Jacqueline Twigg, Curriculum Development Leader for The Arts in the College, Jacqueline Twigg, said it was a long day, but full of valuable learning. "The results achieved show the outstanding dedication of our staff and students and their commitment to excellence in their field," she said. ●
The opportunity to visit Cooroy Mountain only comes around one day a year. This month's Cooroy Mountain Spring Festival attracted more than 2000 visitors keen to make the most of the chance to access the landmark. Rotary Club of Cooroy President, Warren O'Neill, said the fundraising festival was another success. "This is a major event to raise money for good causes and this year the main beneficiaries are the Rotary and National Farmers Federation Drought Appeal, where 100% of the funds received go to farmers, and for our local disability support group in Tewantin, Sunshine Butterflies," he said. The total amount raised has not yet been calculated, but Mr O'Neill said the support of many generous sponsors and volunteers, as well as Cooroy Mountain Spring Water owner Peter Lavin, who kindly grants the club access to the mountain, made the festival possible. "We are most grateful for the support of the 72 volunteers without whom this event would not happen," Mr O'Neill said. "Members of Cooroy Rotary were joined by the Eumundi Rotary Club, members of the Interact Club at the Noosa District High School, the Rotaract Club of the Sunshine Coast, Cooroy Golf Club, Cooroy Memorial Hall and local residents who all worked tirelessly to prepare for the event and to ensure everything ran smoothly on the day."

The Eumundi Dragons have thrown their support behind Aussie farmers doing it tough through the drought. The junior rugby union club not only provides safe family oriented rugby experiences for players it also raises awareness with our boys and girls that everyone needs a helping help sometimes. With this in mind the four-team strong hinterland-based club voted that $1,000 from the weekend's home game canteen takings would go towards helping the community.
"Because all of us need from time to time support to deal with some of the hardships that life throws up at us," Doug Toms said. The Dragons' family and members of 12 visiting teams were easily able to raise the target amount over a six hour period from 8am to 2pm for the Buy a Bale charity. "It was truly a fantastic effort by all concerned and just goes to show the level of support the Dragons' initiative was able

to generate within its membership and the wider Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby Union community," Mr Toms said. CUPCAKE DAY CREATIONS Creating cupcakes to help raise funds for the RSPCA was a whole heap of fun for a good cause, for Endeavour Foundation clients. Troy Nicholls said it was "important to help the animals", and his Endeavour friends all agreed. Endeavour Foundation Wallace Park support operations manager Julie Elford said it was a fun day of making cupcakes and an important achievement for the Endeavour clients from Wallace Park and Noosaville, along with Endeavour Gympie clients who came to enjoy the social occasion and yummy cupcakes. "What a humbling experience that people with a disability are not letting this keep them back but rather going out there to help other organisations," she said. $280 was raised to help the RSPCA. ●

The Dance Fit crew performed to Burning Love and Shake Your Groove Thing in the park to raise funds for the Special Education unit at Sunshine Beach High. TRAITORS ALL After the Kevin Rudd, Julia Gillard, then Kevin Rudd again for PM Labor fiasco I had doubts that elected politicians were there for the good of Australia. That was all forgotten with the promise from Tony Abbott and the Coalition when elected as the new government in 2013 they would never go down the path of Labor. The removal of Tony Abbott by Malcolm Turnbull reignited those doubts again but I was prepared to give them (and to be fair) the old saying “what’s good for one is good for the other" and that it could be a virus in Canberra. Well after last week I now have no doubts that the majority are there, not for the good of Australia but for their own selfish ambitions. Even more so enforced when you see how some change camps if they think they can get a better deal and retain the seat which is a privilege entrusted to them by their electorate. How can we trust these people to represent Australia at home and overseas if they cannot stay true to their own convictions? TAKING ON DROUGHT We are told we should never worry about things over which we have no control, but try telling that to the man on the land. One can be the most efficient and productive farmer and grazier in the country, but in the past, present and in the future, they will continue to experience the debilitating effects of drought, high production costs and fluctuating commodity prices over which they have absolutely no control. Throughout drought periods, feeding, selling or even the unfortunate disposal of stock becomes a constant issue, particularly when supply and demand of hay and grain controls the price of commodities. Call it too simplistic, and I am definitely no economist, but would it be possible for every State Government to purchase a large, irrigated property, purely and simply for the production and continual storage of hay and grain for such times as we are experiencing at the minute and selling to graziers on a cost plus basis, thus ensuring the supply and affordable cost of feed for livestock. This may impact upon the companies that currently sell such fodder, but at least it would ensure its constant availability at a time like the present.

The Coalition is focused on who is the best chance of winning seats back at the next election. This comes at the detriment to the completion of any actual work. This circus is ongoing while our firefighters battle blazes in winter, our farmers are confronted with severe drought, two thirds of the Great Barrier Reef dies off, cruelty is inflicted on children in Nauru and families struggle to make ends meet. VALUING VOLUNTEERS Our community wouldn’t be the same without the assistance of volunteers who give of their time and expertise to benefit others. The Australian Government has a range of programs to support the work of volunteers and community and sporting organisations to fund capital upgrades, equipment purchases, and sporting infrastructure, to help volunteers help others. These initiatives include: • The Stronger Communities Program offers grants of between $2500 and $20,000; • Be Connected Network helping seniors maintain their independence and keep connected with family and friends through digital technology; • Community Sport Infrastructure Grants to improve facilities and encourage greater participation in sporting activities; and • The 2018 Volunteer Grants helps volunteer groups to purchase equipment, pay for fuel
I had an interesting argument with a friend on linguistics and the growing influence of American spelling and vocabulary over that of Australian and British. My friend was adamant that Australian and British words will be replaced with Americanisms, however, I do not believe that this will be the case. Language is constantly evolving, developing and reinventing itself. It is never static. Language and locational dialect creates a sense of identity and belonging within a district or social and educational hierarchy. I recently read a paper on a phenomenon called Anglocreep. This is actually where there is a subtle flow of Britishisms into American English. There is a premium on expressing oneself in a fresh, clever or funny way, especially on social media platforms. Good writers tend to be voracious readers, who are exposed to many different styles and forms of material with varying origins. Fresh words or turns of phrase can come from sources of British origin. Sometimes words such as flat and lift, which have a direct American equivalent (apartment and elevator) are adopted by an American to sound more sophisticated, cosmopolitan and/or pretentious. Some believe that there is an inferiority complex among some American authors who perceive the Queen’s British English as superior. Perhaps it is these Americans who are marketing themselves as global citizens who view the world beyond US borders. One need not be an Anglophile to use Britishisms. Many Americans are unaware that their everyday words are of British origin. Such common British words include: bespoke, dodgy, gobsmacked, wonky, amongst, easy peasy, twee, ginger (redhead), go missing, kerfuffle, gutted and bestie. Oh, and FYI, Australia invented the word selfie. We also use words and phrases exclusive to our continent that often confuse the hell out of visitors to our big, brown land, including: queue (line), heaps (lots), lollies, chips (in a packet), chips (hot fried potatoes), lemonade, Maccas, bin chicken, esky, tomato sauce, budgie smugglers, frog and toad, Joe Blake ... A STREET SHOWS ITS HEART OF ART BY HOLLIE HARRIS David Berns Real Estate presents a group of eight diverse artists from varied backgrounds and careers but whose life journeys have lead them all to live in the same one road tucked away under Mt. Tinbeerwah - a place where creativity clearly flourishes.In this very special exhibition on 8 September - 16 October at The Butter Factory, Cooroy, A Street Shows its Art? spotlights these incredible artists who all happen to live in Gumboil Street, Lake MacDonald. While they all differ in age, gender, nationality and their choice of media, they do share a common bond - a love of art; making it and appreciating it. With no imposed themes or restraints, this exciting exhibition showcases an eclectic range covering much of the art spectrum including jewellery, painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture and garden art. The opening night is on the 8th which includes guest speaker Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington and live entertainment from Rily Woodman (also a Gumboil resident) from 5pm. The Artists Young French retiree, Chantal Desplat paints for pleasure and has done so for nearly half a century. Her favorite medium is oil, which she works exclusively with a palette knife. Very eclectic in her creativity, Chantal works as well in figurative (nudes, faces, landscapes, bouquets, still lifes as abstract. During a two-month exchange of homes in Australia, Gumboil Road, Tinbeerwah, she had the chance to give a free rein to her passion in the studio made available by her hostess, in an awesome and exotic creative atmosphere. Fifty five years ago Heidi and Kurt Becker met at the Academy of fine Art in Kassel / Germany and have lived and worked together ever since. Poetry, myths and fantasy are the source of their whimsical, mischievous miniature sculptures and drawings. Every sculpture is individually and lovingly modelled from clay, with emphasis on playfulness, expression and detail. Heidi Woodman grew up in the Adelaide foothills where exposure to many artistic mediums led to a love of the tactile qualities of clay, and the satisfaction achieved by creating something beautiful from a simple lump of mud. With an early focus on pre-Columbian Meso-American inspired designs, the range then grew to include a variety of collections with spiritual influence in an assortment of mediums. New Earth Art went onto win several awards at Mind Body Spirit Festivals across Australia. Lily Hass grew up in the Noosa area, where she thrived on exploring the natural beauty of her surroundings and that together with her passion for animals and the outdoors is what has fueled her creativity and provides inspiration for her art. During her high school years and later at Tafe Visual Arts College she began to explore Lino printing and has made this medium her main focus. However, she also loves to work with other mediums, including painting, wood etching, ceramics and beading. Monika Juengling's passion with clay started in Germany where she learned her skills working in a studio specialising in table ware. Her passion is porcelain and she enjoys pairing her vessels with glazes that reflect the simple beauty of her thrown forms. 28 NOOSA TODAY

Pamela Mitchell was born in Adelaide and has always drawn and painted with a desire to be an artist, but had to wait till later in life to achieve that goal. She works in oils, acrylics, pastels and sketches in charcoal. Her works hang in private collections across Australia, Thailand, Greece, Scotland and England. NZ born wire artist jeweller, Pauline Ramsay-Murray, qualified as a Fellow of Gemmology in Australia in 1975 and began a career in the study of gemstones which has taken her world-wide on a regular basis. Her fascination with rocks which she continues today in an endless exploration of art pieces.

Her range of designing has included work for pearl farms in W.A., fossil pieces for museums, as well as White Cliffs opal fields in NSW. While Tammy McGarry has always had an interest in art, from jewellery making, photography and ceramics to painting, her work commitments never allowed her to truly embrace it. It is only now in retirement that she has the luxury of time to explore, play and develop those passions further. Her medium of preference is acrylics and mixed media. WHAT’S ON SUPPORT OUR FARMERS AT COOROY RSL FUNDRAISER Fundraising for our drought affected farmers is definitely topical at present, with farmers facing ruin across New South Wales and Queensland in what some are calling the worst drought in living memory. "It touches home to everyone, as these farmers are the people putting food on our plates. They are doing it tough and the Cooroy community is really rallying to show support for our Aussie farmers," said Cooroy RSL Operations Manager, Helen Hollingworth. Cooroy RSL are helping the fundraising efforts by holding a Drought Fundraiser on Saturday 15th September. Fantastic local band, Miss Leading will be playing starting with a few country songs to kick the night off before heading into their usual soulful rock grooves. It's a fun night out that raises funds for a good cause. There is no cover
charge and there will be raffles and special promotions on the night to raise funds. The chosen charity to support is Drought Angels, which has earnt a reputation for providing personalised, heartfelt and discreet assistance to farmers. Everyone is encouraging to come dressed in their best farmer outfit and there will be a prize on the night for best costume. You can support this event by booking a table and donating on the night. BY HOLLIE HARRIS Showcasing the best of Australian and international spoken word talent at this year's Horizon Festival, The Bunker Spoken Word Series features a signature series of events including workshop opportunities, competitive heats and guest performances all leading up to the 'grand finale' event to be held on Saturday 1 September in The Bunker at Imperial Hotel Eumundi. Event Coordinator Nycole Prowse says local organisations Peripheral Arts and Writers Republic have collaborated to produce this event series for the festival. "The Bunker Spoken Word Series is all about honouring the artforms of storytelling and performance poetry," Nycole says "We'll be celebrating local Sunshine Coast talent alongside established world class performers." She says the call for registrations for the competition is now open to all wordsmiths willing to put their works on the line in the round of competitive heats - for a chance to perform in the main event for major cash prizes. Limited places are available in the competition and those interested need to register through the Horizon Festival website in either the poetry or storytelling
competition categories. Details of the competition format will be forwarded upon registration. Finalists from each heat will be invited to perform in front of a live audience and a panel of three judges in The Bunker at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi on Saturday 1 September, when two first place winners will each take home $500 in cash. A $250 cash prize will also be awarded to the
runner-ups in each category, and a $100 People's Choice Award will be awarded - as voted by the live audience. Competition heats are open to aspiring writers and creatives over 18 years of age and all levels of experience. The events will also feature guest performances from some of the most exciting touring performers in the genre. These special guests will also be presenting exclusive workshops for
all Sunshine Coast creatives with details and tickets available through the Horizon Festival website. "Whether you come along as a performer, a workshop participant or as a member of the audience, this series is guaranteed to ignite a love of stories and blow you away with the power of performance," Nycole says. Queenslanders struggling with alcohol and drugs will be able to access all their treatment options in one place thanks to a new website launched by the Palaszczuk Government. Queensland Health has launched its new Alcohol and Drug Information Service (ADIS) website, providing a suite of information and resources for individuals, families and health professionals. Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Steven Miles said the site was developed as part of the Palaszczuk Government's Action on ice plan, which launched in February. "Queenslanders made it clear there was a need for a central point of truth with information and support about alcohol and drug abuse," Mr Miles said. "The 'ADIS' website is designed to be just that and will support Queenslanders and their families in need of assistance with
their alcohol and drug consumption. Minister Miles said the website will include self-assessment quizzes so people can gauge if their alcohol intake or drug use is putting them at risk. "In addition to busting myths, the website provides a list of alcohol and drug treatment options available across Queensland and helpful resources for health professionals," Mr Miles said. "This site will complement the existing 24/7 confidential alcohol and drug phone service 1800 177 833 that helps Queenslanders who are concerned about their own or someone else's alcohol or drug use. New scientific evidence has shown that just like humans, cognitive decline can occur in aging dogs. CALDWELL NAMED STATE TENNIS REP Sunshine Beach State School's Christian Caldwell will represent his state on the tennis court as part of the Bruce Cup Team competing in the national finals in Adelaide in October. The Bruce Cup is a prestigious, annual national primary school teams event that has been played since 1938. It was first presented by the Honourable HA Bruce, MLA, a former Queensland education minister. Many players who have won titles at Wimbledon and become tennis stars played their first representative matches for their state in the Bruce Cup. Pat Rafter, Todd Woodbridge, Mark Philippoussis, Rachel McQuillan and Evie Dominokovic are among them. This year the state trials were held in Rockhampton in unseasonally hot conditions. Each day the winter temperatures soared to 28 degrees, testing the stamina and will of every player. Christian was the third seed and performed well against the best kids in Queensland for the 10-12 age group. He finished third overall and will play as the number three at the national championships in Adelaide. Christian started playing tennis when he was three years old, under the watchful eye of his father Nick Caldwell, who coaches at Noosa Tennis Club. "Christian has worked towards making the Bruce Cup team for a number of years

"It's incredibly difficult to make the Bruce Cup team because it's such a great honour and the competition is fierce." Christian can now add his Queensland representative honours to the Rod
Laver Queensland Championships (singles), Queensland Clay Court Championships(doubles), N.S.W. Clay Court Championships (doubles), Victorian Grass Court Championships (singles) and two Queensland Primary School's Championships.
Christian has a busy schedule to follow for the rest of the year and will now focus on the spring school holiday tournaments and the Clay Court Nationals, which are held in Canberra in late September before he turns his attention to the Bruce Cup. ●

On both days, the club will be running a 'come and try' session for new members to experience a slice of what athletics can offer. TIGERS PUNISHED THE PANTHERS BY JULIEN PITTS The Rococo's Bar and Bistro Noosa Tigers punished the Caloundra panthers to the tune of seven goals in what was a hotly contested qualifying final at Rococo Bistro Oval last Saturday. A very strong local Aussie rules crowd witnessed a finals pressure opening half as both Sunshine Coast rivals were fierce at the footy and the man in attempts to gain ascendancy. Noosa held a slight two goal advantage at the main break before coming out and producing a sublime premiership quarter highlighted by skilful team work and good finishing around goal. The final quarter was an arm wrestle again but the rampant Tigers had done the damage and now face arch rival Maroochydore at Fishermans road this Saturday. The winner (of course) goes directly into the grand final to be played at Yeronga on Saturday the 15 of September. Tyler Stack was everywhere for the victors gathering 36 disposals and putting on a master class in run and work rate. Jai Fitzpatrick continues to wow the crowd with his sublime evasion and poise whilst footy manager Mitch Woods was again among the Tigers best with a terrific four quarter effort. Skipper Aaron Laskey (as usual) was a key in the victory turning defence into attack throughout the entire game with Harry Maher also as cool as a cucumber
across the half back line. Joel Lambourn again delighted the crowd with his calmness and more so his attacking capabilities when switched forward. All in all a really good, even team performance in a big game which I know coach Sammy Faure and his entourage were stoked with. Earlier in the day there was a massive come-from-behind win by the Reserves after being seven goals down at half time
to set up a second semi final against Maroochydore on Saturday. The Betty's Burgers Noosa Tigers Colts are also playing finals on Saturday when they play Western Districts at 9.30am. It's an exciting week ahead as it doesn't get much bigger than a second semi final against the arch enemy does it? As club co-founder Lenny Daddow likes saying 'who puts the top in the stew? than viewing the city from the top of a bus. Footsore and bum-weary after two days of exploring, we devoted the third to a hit of culture, taking in a matinee of the hilarious Book of Mormon in the West End, followed by wine and cheese in the Crusting Pipe pleasure pit in the Covent Garden market, listening to a lively student string quintet
perform Pachelbel and Vivaldi while we grazed on stilton and cheddar and sipped a Rioja Blanco. We'd been warned about the craziness of the Notting Hill Carnival, not to mention the gang knife fights and the pickpockets, but we'd also been told that Sunday, our last full day in London, was children's day there, and that we'd be pretty safe up until dark. (It's not unusual, these days, to be classified as children, particularly by one's own.) Our host, absent in Belgium for the Grand Prix, kept sending me emails and texts outlining pickpocket preventative measures and knife-avoiding body gyrations, but we ventured forth regardless, just as the predicted rainstorm rolled in from the west. At Notting Hill Gate we joined the poncho-clad, dripping wet throng, heading in the general direction of unspeakably loud doof-doof reggae, emanating from slowmoving trucks, behind which people in raincoats simulated sex. Now I'm pretty broadminded, but this was not quite what I had in mind for a lazy Sunday afternoon. I was thinking more sitting in a bar somewhere drinking a pint and chewing on some Jamaican jerk chicken while listening to a Bob Marley tribute band. By now it was pouring with rain and the high viz cops seemed to have their hands full with wet drunks, so we double-checked our wallets and got the hell out of there, far enough away that we could find a pub with a vacant corner and settle in for the Chelsea home game. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back to the carnival, but next time it would be with ear muffs and armour. Now we're off to Portugal for a surf festival, which will come as a relief to those of you who think this is a surf column. I'm sure there'll be fewer knives and more fun. Full report next week. "When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life," the eminent 18th century writer Dr Samuel Johnson once famously said, or so he was quoted in Boswell's equally famous biography of the great man. When I first lived in London in the early 1970s, I was too full of warm ale and testosterone to take much notice of the city itself, other than the smoke-stained interiors of our favoured pubs on the Harrow Road. In fact it was only at the turn of the century when my work took me there on a monthly basis that I really began to appreciate what makes the British capital tick and why it remains one of my favourite cities in the world, an opinion only enhanced on recent visits. So here we are, back in London Town for the most crowded, completely mad holiday weekend of the year, when Brits of all colour and creed lose the plot entirely in celebration of the end of summer. Yes, we walked slap-bang into August Bank Holiday weekend without plan or intent, and yet from our leafy base in a quiet part of Kensington, just a few blocks away from the craziness of the Notting Hill Carnival, we can walk and cycle the city parks almost in solitude, dropping in for a coffee and cake here, or to peruse a gallery or a secondhand bookshop's fascinating offering there. When I was in London in 2012, working on the Olympic broadcast, I shook off the hangover of the crew wrap party (after three weeks of 12-hours a day stress) with a daylong cycle, park-hopping from Battersea to Regent's and back on a brilliant summer's day. Having felt so invigorated by that adventure, I forced the bride to join me on a cycle as soon as the jetlag had subsided. Six years ago the cycle rental program was very new to London, and having been introduced by then Mayor Boris Johnson, the bikes you could pick up on just about any street corner and return wherever you liked, were known as Boris Bikes. Now they've been privatised and branded - the ones we rented were Bank of Santander, which last time I looked, was an excellent place to hide a bit of black money and the prices had gone through the roof. But nothing in London is cheap, so I got over the shock of the new and we cycled off into a chill wind but with the warming sun on our backs. A BIT OF FRESH WATER GREAT FOR THE RIVER The Noosa River has had a bit of a flush out with the rain last week, coupled with the larger tides, this has brought some extra food down the river and provided some cover for fish as the water dirties slightly. Mangrove jack have started to turn up, with some quality fish taken around structures along the sound and the upper reaches of the river. Suspending lures are perfect as they will spend more time in the strike zone. Up towards the river mouth, the bigger evening tide has seen some great captures. Soft plastics have been producing some quality trevally. For the bait anglers, small fish baits like pilchards, whitebait, and hardy heads on small ganged hooks have produced quality trevally. Woods Bays, the current line and river mouth is where the good numbers of flathead have been caught and have also been responding well to soft plastics and fresh baits like mullet and live herring. Up river, both ski runs have been producing great-sized GT'S and the odd jewie, fishing soft plastic vibes has been claiming some nice fish. On the offshore scene, weather conditions made things a bit touch-and-go
for anglers, but those that did head out got some great results. Up on North Reef, pearl perch and quality snapper have been abundant with Maori cod and cobia present as well. Steady burley trails of pilchards and tuna burley pellets mixed together with tuna oil has been the best technique in getting the schools of snapper closer to the boat. On Sunshine Reef, there are coral trout, venus tusk fish and Maori cod, with good numbers of winter longtail tuna and yellowfin tuna schooling as well. Tuna have been taking floated pillies along with 25g-40g slugs when the tuna are feeding on the surface. Halls Reef was good for grassy sweetlip, and all tuna species are prolific around the Halls Reef patches. Working curly tail plastics hard against the bottom has been the go-to technique for this area. Beach anglers welcomed a bit of bad weather over the weekend with plenty of tailor taken from the northern end of Noosa North Shore. Pilchards cast to the back of the breakers seemed to find the schools, fast moving slugs also claimed some nice green backs.
In the closer gutters, dart, bream and whiting were all taken on worms, prawns and yabbies. Casting to the back of the gutter and
rolling your baits under the white water seemed to be the best way to pin a fish. So in behalf of Jack Mangrove, best of luck on your fishing adventures! ●

BY WILL VINE & SCOTT LONG U8S MATCH REPORT Just like that the season is over with the Eumundi Dragons Under 8s having a cracker of a game against Maroochydore. There was a huge improvement in ball control and body position, which was focused on at this week's training. It was clearly demonstrated on the field as we had lots of possession on the ball resulting in a couple of tries and a few very close ones as well. The forwards did extremely well in defending the try line when the pressure was on and turning the ball over to get it to the backs. The backs also defended well and got the ball out to the wing many times. It really was a great game of rugby to watch, which made choosing the player of the game an impossible task, so this week the whole team wins the award for teamwork and just having fun. I would like to thank all the parents and friends for getting the players to the games and training each week with a special mention to Shane Davies the team's manager and assistant coach and our club president Doug Toms for their support each week. Bring on 2019! Under 9s match report The Dragons played their last match of the season against Maleny in Kawana on Saturday. The game was hard fought by both teams with the Dragons leading by four tries into the half. The Dragons built on this strength throughout the second half and came away with a convincing win. The U9s played their last match against Maleny. Man of the Match assuredly goes to Jett who notched up not one or two tries but a total of ten on the day, bringing his season total to an amazing ninety tries. Eli and Patrick also scored great tries. Craig and Will S defended passionately, racking up impressive tackle counts. That said, Saturday's game was won by an all-around team effort with great support
and passing skills being shown. Well done to the Dragons on a fantastic season and a great victory in their last game. A massive thank you goes out to the Dragons coaching/support team whose patience, passion and dedication has been clearly evident in the progress of the team throughout the season. ●
