She’s our hero Bridget O'Toole has tried to block out the painful memory the day her husband was tragically killed by two stab wounds to the upper chest. "I've got to be kinder to myself because you torture yourself thinking could've done more," says Mrs O'Toole. "Survivor guilt isn't good." It was 5pm on 12 July 2013 when a man wielding a 20-centimetre carving knife entered Bridget and Dermot O'Toole's jewellery store in Hastings. "I thought it was a customer coming in and I just got up to serve him," she said. However Mrs O'Toole, of Lyndhurst, was attacked by the armed assailant who pushed her into a glass cabinet and stabbed her several times. "He was screaming like a lunatic," she recalled. During the attack Mr O'Toole, who suffered from Parkinson's Disease, came out from the workshop to defend his wife and began wrestling with the assailant. "We were just trying to fight him off ... Dermot was desperately trying to save me." "Dermot fell over, he tripped over and he turned on him and stabbed him to death," she said. Mrs O'Toole attempted to pull the offender away from her husband and in doing so she was
further assaulted. The assailant then ran out of the shop. Mr O'Toole, 64, was fatally wounded and tragically died at the scene. Mrs O'Toole was taken to hospital where she had to undergo plastic surgery for the extensive serious stab and slash wounds and the glass shards that were embedded in her back. For her actions, Mrs O'Toole was awarded the 2018 Gold Clarke Medal during a presentation at the Melbourne Town Hall on Thursday 23 August. "It was a beautiful day," says Mrs O'Toole. "I was totally humbled and to be deemed worthy of such a prestigious award I couldn't believe it." The medal is an award of The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and is the Society's highest award for the most outstanding case of bravery. Mr O'Toole was posthumously awarded the Star of Courage in 2017 - Australia's highest bravery accolades which recognises "acts of conspicuous courage in circumstances of great peril". The robber, Gavin Perry, 27, was high after taking ice and on parole at the time of the murder. He was jailed for 27 years in 2014 for the crime. Mrs O'Toole remembers her husband of 41 years as a wonderful man who was a funny, kind and loyal man."I had the best husband and we had a great life together," she said. "Life has just been horrible since."

Trains every 10 minutes By Brendan Rees A $750 million upgrade of the Cranbourne line will be duplicated from Dandenong to Cranbourne if the State Government is re-elected in November. Premier Daniel Andrews made the announcement at Cranbourne Railway Station on Sunday 26 August to duplicate eight kilometres of single track from Dandenong to Cranbourne - with construction to start in 2021 and finished by 2023. Mr Andrews said the number of train services would be doubled and delivered every 10 minutes during peak times along the Cranbourne line which would remove the bottlenecks that cause delays. Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said duplicating the Cranbourne line also paved the way for it to be extended to Clyde with a re-elected Labor Government committing $7 million to complete planning for the new rail link. Ms Allan said the Cranbourne line had be duplicated to run more train services before a new rail link could be built. "You can't extend without duplicating because all you're doing is extending the problem and the problem is the bottleneck of the single track," she said. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said: "It's just common sense - you can't add even more trains to an already crowded track." In July, the Opposition announced an elected Liberal Nationals Government would build five kilometres of electrified double line from Cranbourne to Cranbourne East and terminating at Clyde at a cost of $487 million. As part of this transport infrastructure project, new stations will be built at Cranbourne East and Clyde along with 350 additional parking spaces.
Premier Daniel Andrews, centre, with Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards, left, and Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan, right, at the announcement at Cranbourne Railway Station. Picture: CONTRIBUTED Opposition leader Matthew Guy said: "The City of Casey is experiencing substantial population growing pains and needs immediate government action." Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Davis said when Daniel Andrews tore up the East West Link contract and cost taxpayers $1.3 billion in compensation, "that money could have been better spent on building this rail extension three years ago as well as more
local schools and health services." Member for Bass, Brian Paynter said: "Clyde is experiencing massive population growth and we need to make sure that when it comes to infrastructure we aren't playing catch up but rather getting ahead." Ms Allan said the Liberals' promise to build a Clyde rail link was underfunded and without duplicating the Cranbourne line it meant "more congestion, delays and cancellations
for passengers" because the bottlenecks would still exist and no extra services could be added. Public Transport Users Association spokesman Daniel Bowen said "With overcrowding very common on the Cranbourne and Pakenam lines, the more that can be done to run more trains, and improve reliability, the better." The Cranbourne Line Duplication Project is expected to create more than 1000 jobs.
Green light for roundabout replacement By Brendan Rees Work is underway to replace a notorious bottleneck intersection in Cranbourne West with traffic lights. The roundabout at Western Port Highway and Thompsons Road which has been a constant source of angst for residents at morning and afternoon peaks - will have traffic lights installed by mid-2019. Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan joined Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards visited the site on Friday 24 August to announce the start of the works. It is part of the State Government's $207 million Thompsons Road upgrade between Dandenong-Frankston Road and BerwickCranbourne Road which will add extra lanes - all to be completed by mid-2019. The new signalised intersections are being constructed at Western Port Highway, McCormicks Road and Evans Road to safely and better manage traffic flow onto Thompsons Road. The roundabout removal works at Western
Port Highway follows extensive preparation activities, including gas and pipeline works, installation of new power poles on the eastbound carriageway between Taylors Road and Western Port Highway, and relocation of power poles along Thompsons Road. Mr Donnellan said these works were necessary to enable widening and construction of the new road and signalised intersections at both Western Port Highway and later at McCormicks Road and Evans Road. Early work is also underway for 10 kilometres of shared walking and cycling paths. Mr Donnellan said: "Work on this notoriously congested road continues to take shape." "While others talk about congestion in the south east, we're building the infrastructure the community needs to get people home sooner and safer," he said. Ms Richards said: "There are 200 jobs on this part of the project alone ... That's what makes a difference in the community." She added locals knew just how frustrating the intersection has been thanked them for
their patience. "It'll all be worth it by the time we duplicate this and get rid of this roundabout." The intersection has been pegged for removal by the Opposition under their intersection removal program. Under the plan, Opposition leader Matthew Guy would create underpasses at the intersections at Hall Road and Western Port Highway in Cranbourne West, and Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway in Lyndhurst. "Removing these suburban congestion hotspots will make our roads safer and keep traffic flowing which means less time spent sitting in gridlock and more time at home with family and friends," said Mr Guy. President of the Save Cranbourne West Residents Group Ray Walker although he welcomed the traffic light installation at the intersection, an overpass would be a better option in the long-term. He said it would be "an expensive exercise and I realise there's a lot of competition for funds" but "does move traffic a lot faster than
Minister for Roads Luke Donnellan with Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards and workers at the Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway roundabout. Picture: CONTRIBUTED a set of traffic lights." VicRoads has advised Thompsons Road in Lyndhurst will be closed in both directions between Dandenong-Frankston Road and Lyndhurst Boulevard from 7.30pm to 5.30am on Tuesday 28 August. This is a nightly closure that will repeat until Friday 7 September.

Fix our roads By Brendan Rees Two St Francis de Sales Primary School students are leading a charge in lobbying Casey Council to address the "serious problem" of traffic on busy roads. In their letters to council, Grade Six student Ayden Braganza said speed humps were needed along Alpine Heath Way in Lyndhurst while Grade Five student Mariangela Dominic launched a petition for council to build more roads in Casey. Mariangela said many residents shared her concerns that traffic congestion across the City of Casey was simply "wasting fuel, time or money." "To support my complaint I took a petition of adults and children who are also agreeing to my issue that is clearly disturbing them," said Mariangela. "Instead of focusing on freeways, governments should change the way we pay for other roads and public transport," she stated in her letter. Ayden conducted a poll on the Lyndhurst Community Facebook page as to whether residents were inconvenienced with the "steady stream" of traffic with roundabouts every morning in Lynbrook, particularly the intersection of Alpine Heath Way and Mellington Drive. "A total of 175 responses were recorded in four hours," Ayden said. "Out of which 158
people (90.3 per cent) agreed that they were inconvenienced, while another 17 people (9.7 per cent) said they were unaffected." He said speed humps along Alpine Heath Way would provide a "smoother flow of traffic on all directions." Casey Councillor Damien Rosario tabled Mariangela's 19-strong petition at a 21 August council meeting with a motion passed by councillors to investigate both students' concerns.Cr Rosario was taken aback by the students' efforts saying it "warms my heart and makes me think the future is much brighter." He also told councillors the letters were "well detailed" and "well researched" as well as "constructive suggestions" on how to improve Casey's gridlock. Council will write letters to the students acknowledging their contribution to community safety, and advise them of the outcome of their efforts.

A number of residents at Willow Glen Boulevard in Cranbourne were fined up to hundreds of dollars for parking in 'no stopping' zones.
Fines make times tight By Brendan Rees Furious residents who copped hefty parking fines at Willow Glen Boulevard in Cranbourne West are now in line for a refund. Sophie Lang was one of the motorists who was hit with a $159 fine for parking on the nature strip on Thursday 2 August. She says she had returned to her partner's home Willow Glen Boulevard in the evening to discover that "almost all of the cars" in the residential street had been slapped with parking fines at 8.33pm. She said it was nightmare trying to find a car park in the "tiny road" where hundreds of people packed the new housing estate. "The problem here is; the majority of the street is a no standing zone," she said. "This just shows that they don't care about their communities and their needs, they just want money." "It's absolutely disgraceful that tenants in these areas can't even have friends or family members visit them without getting a $159 fine slapped on their windscreen," she said. Following a visit to Willow Glen Boulevard, Casey Council has apologised and launched a "review of parking arrangements in the street to see how we can address resident's concerns."
"While the review is conducted, council will withdraw all infringements issued in the street," said City of Casey spokesman Gerard Scholten. "Council responded to complaints from neighbours of cars blocking the footpath and nature strips restricting access for waste contractors on their weekly run." Council advised a large overflow carpark was available for all residents and visitors at the entrance to the street. Ms Lang said she was relieved her fine would be waived after receiving an email from council on Monday 27 August: "I'm really happy - I didn't think it would happen." After voicing her angst to Nine Network's A Current Affair who also aired her story last week, Ms Lang said "It shows the media really does help." But she argued "How does the council approve this project in the first place?" "If a certain amount of people live in such high density living, there should be laws/regulations put in place to ensure that the roads are wide enough for two cars to get through as well as have enough space for people to park on the side of the road," she said. Casey Council says the developer took maximum advantage of what was allowable under the Victorian Government planning controls.

OPINION More gambling harm awareness My name is Gavin and I am a compulsive gambler and also an active member of Gamblers Anonymous. Reading the article 'Shocking losses' in the Berwick Star News last Thursday, I felt it was important to make people aware that compulsive gambling is an illness, just as alcoholism is. People in the grip of this illness spend countless time and money in an effort to avoid problems in their lives and chase the elusive win which they feel will solve all their problems. The problem is that there is no amount that will ever satisfy them. If they win they dream of bigger things. If they lose they just keep chasing their losses. I feel that better awareness and education of our entire populous is needed. I tried the government funded help scheme which only wanted to me to control my gambling. But not taking anything away from the scheme, this type of counselling will never work for the compulsive gambler as I feel that only someone who has been a compulsive gambler can truly understand and help those who need and want help. I hope this helps anyone in the community that is in need of help and if you wish to get in touch or find a meeting just look up online. Gavin. Beaconsfield.

On the 27 August the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about the State Government announcing work had started to replace the notorious roundabout at Western Port Highway and Thompsons Road with traffic lights. The story generated a difference of opinion online. Here's how they reacted: Mark Mathews: finished by mid 2019...... So for the next 12 months we have 1 lane and blind spots, with idiots not knowing what to do, road closures and everything else... for a
set of lights? They can build a fly over in that time span. Alan Carter: Don't forget to place the signs at the roundabout entrances so that you can see the indicators of the cars to your right properly. Plant some bushes to block your view completely like you usually do. Jughead-Olive Oyl Colville: We were promised by the Labor Government that if they got in they would have it made as an overpass. Jason Jones: If you can remember this inter-
section had traffic lights once before. It really needs an overpass. Mason Pelican O'Neill: This won't make it any quicker or easier. Should've put an overpass with a lane onto Westernport - bloody ridiculous. Sue Stride: Maybe we should draw a picture for them Stuart Barkway: Should be an overpass and Western Port Highway made into freeway all the way to Hastings, long overdue. Katie Walker: Yay about time. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Narre Warren's Vishal Sharma was also named as the Casey Stadium winner and Murali Narasimhan as the Casey ARC winner. The YMCA Casey region received a huge response from families nominating their dad or father figure. Community Engagement Co-ordinator Tori Norris said selecting a winner hadn't been easy. Ms Norris announced Scott Wallace as the 2018 YMCA Casey Community Father of the Year and said he was an extraordinary example of a dad/father figure. Scott was nominated by his sons Tahj, Cody and Ronan after they submitted a heartfelt story about their dad. Tahj stated that his dad was a great cook, puts a roof over his head, has awesome Dad jokes, great advice and is always there to help. Cody, their 12-year-old son was diagnosed with a rare brain tumour and hydrocephalus (excess fluid on the brain) just before he was two years old. Since then, Cody has undergone nine brain surgeries to date (with another scheduled this year). Scott is a teacher and head of IT at Beaconhills College in Pakenham. Scott, Vishal and Murali have been presented with a family pass to the third annual YMCA Father's Day Fun Run to be held on Father's Day, 2 September.
Casey RACE Centre Manager, Carly Sanders, said the YMCA Community Father of the Year award recognised a local dad or father figure who was like a superhero to the children in their life. "The YMCA Community Father of the Year award is all about celebrating the important role of fathers in our community. Scott, Vishal and Murali are a wonderful example of our local superhero's and are deserving winners," Ms Norris said. Carly Sanders added that Father's Day on Sunday, 2 September is a great day to slow down and spend time together as a family. "Use the day as an opportunity to head to the park, kick the footy, or walk or run in the YMCA Father's Day Fun Run," Ms Sanders said. The YMCA founded Father's Day in the United States in 1910 and the Y remains dedicated to enabling people to be healthier, happier and connected to their community. By Brendan Rees Rocketing power bills have taken a big blow on small businesses in Cranbourne, leaving some trying to find ways to keep their lights on. Fourth generation publican and manager of Kelly's Hotel in Cranbourne Paul Stocks said power costs were "out of control". "We've gone from $10,000 a month to $17000 a month in the last year or two," he said. Mr Stocks added he would have to sell the equivalent of 5000 beers or 1157 Parma meals per month just to keep up with the extra costs. Cranbourne Market officer manager Pramila Phogat said they were forking out $5000-$6000 in electricity bills which was "killing" their business. "They are really, really high," she said. ?Ms Phogat said the company, which employs 20 people, would eventually have to put up their prices just to "keep running the business." Cranbourne's Frank D Hair Styling manager Frank De Pasquale also said his power bills "had gone through the roof" - up about $300-$400 per quarter. Shadow Minister for Energy David Southwick said energy prices were at a "crisis point," adding "everyone is being affected from the small business to homes." He said Mr Andrews' shutdown of Hazelwood Power Station had removed 22 per cent of power generation from Victoria. "This is completely unacceptable that when Victorians are paying record power prices we have an extreme chance of blackouts under Daniel Andrews." The Australian Competition and Consumer

Pavilion works kick off By Brendan Rees The first sod has been turned as part of stage two of the $4.4 million Hunt Club Estate District Level AFL and Cricket Oval project. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera joined City of Casey Mayor Geoff Ablett on Tuesday 28 August in announcing the start of construction at the Cranbourne East site for a pavilion which will include a community space, change rooms, a kitchen and office space. Stage one construction started last year and once complete it will feature a football and cricket oval with floodlighting, cricket nets, a synthetic cricket pitch, a path network, play space, car parking, and landscaping. Both stages of the Hunt Club Estate District Level AFL/Cricket Oval and Pavilion project will be completed in April 2019. The project is funded through a $2.38 mil-
lion grant from the State Government's Growing Suburbs Fund and $2 million from the Cranbourne East Development Contributions Plan, with the City of Casey also contributing $50000. Mr Perera said with the high rate of population growth in Casey, the new oval and pavilion would "make all the difference" for new residents. "This new oval and pavilion are a great example of how the Andrews Labor Government is nurturing the community spirit and liveability in our local area," he said. Cr Ablett said the new sporting ground and pavilion was a "significant development" and would help bring the community together. "We need the State Government of the day to help us with rate capping, and funding and cofunding for projects like this otherwise we might have to look at putting rates up and we don't want to do that," he said.
Welcoming stage two works of the Hunt Club Estate District Level AFL and Cricket Oval project was from left, Labor candidate for Cranbourne Pauline Richards, Cranbourne MP Jude Perera, Casey mayor Geoff Ablett, and councillors Amanda Stapledon, Rosalie Crestani and Rex Flannery. 184643 Picture: BRENDAN REES
Vote plea to put wheels in motion for big gardens idea By Brendan Rees A Cranbourne resident has put plans for a free shuttle bus to run to the Cranbourne Royal Botanic Gardens in motion with a Pick My Project application. Sharon Start's proposal is one of 2000 project ideas vying for a slice of the State Government's $30 million Pick My Project initiative. Victorians can help make their favourite project ideas a reality by voting for the top three eligible projects in their local community. Minister for Suburban Development Lily D'Ambrosio said: "We've been inundated with great community project ideas and now it's time for Victorians to vote."
Cranbourne resident Sharon Start is vying for up to $200000 to for her project idea to have a free huttle bus to the Cranbourne Gardens become a reality. "Pick My Project is giving every community the chance to submit ideas, vote for them and then watch them happen," she said.
Ms Start said there was currently no public transport available to the Cranbourne GardenS so when she heard about Pick My Project, "a bus service immediately came to mind and seemed to fit the brief very well." "It's going to bring in some tourist dollars which will also help our community," she said. She said a shuttle bus that connected to the Cranbourne train station, Lyall Street bus exchange and the Casey Complex would be perfect. "It would be a win-win all around," she said. Ms Sharp said for more people to enjoy the "beautiful space" of the gardens "would be wonderful." "I'm hoping it will go through, it would be fabulous."
Schools, kindergartens and other community groups will also be able to access this free service, she said. Ms Sharp also has aspirations to revitalise the outdoor space at Balla Balla Community Centre in Cranbourne East. She says a shelter could be used for festivals, markets or performances, making it "more user friendly, more attractive." "We're hoping with the community input to redesign that whole outdoor space," she said. Voters can visit the Pick My Project website to register and select their local community by searching for their street address or suburb. Voting closes on 17 September. Advertisement

Turn up and go More services are being added to the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines as the new metropolitan train timetable starts this week (Monday 27 August). Passengers can now access 'turn-up-andgo' on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines to Dandenong, with trains running every 10 minutes on weekdays until 10pm as part of the 80 extra services running per week. The new timetable delivers 60 services, either new or extended, to Dandenong Station passengers, and 65 new or extended services for Westall Station passengers. Passengers at stations between Dandenong and the city will be able to access an extra 45 services extended from Cranbourne each week.
The 10 new services a week on the Cranbourne line are filling gaps from the previous timetable, with 45 services also extended to run between Flinders Street and Cranbourne Station, giving passengers more one-seat journeys. Pakenham Line passengers are also benefiting from the extension of five extra evening services a week from Dandenong, making the timetable more consistent. The delivery of the new services comes as works continue on the Labor Government's 65 new High Capacity Metro Trains, which will carry 20 per cent more passengers than any other train currently on the network. Supported by critical power and signalling upgrades, the bigger, better trains will be rolled
out on the Cranbourne and Pakenham lines from mid-2019, eventually running through the Metro Tunnel and out to Sunbury. New timetables and route maps are now available at ptv.vic.gov.au, on the PTV app, at staffed stations or by calling the Public Transport call centre on 1800 800 007. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera said "This new timetable is giving passengers more options on some of our busiest train lines while we get on with building the Metro Tunnel, which will free up space to run even more services on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines." Opposition leader Matthew Guy said the City of Casey was experiencing "substantial population growing pains" and needed "im-

He said the Liberals announcement to extend the Cranbourne rail line to Clyde along with their plan to remove intersections at Thompsons Road and Western Port Highway in Lyndhurst as well as Hall Road and Western Port Highway, Cranbourne West "will also help bust local congestion."
Speak up on bus services By Brendan Rees Passengers travelling from Cranbourne to Seaford will now be going a new way under a proposed new bus route. Cranbourne MP Jude Perera announced route 760 on Friday 24 August which he says will provide an important link between Frankston and Cranbourne train lines, ensuring the community has access to these stations and areas like Carrum Downs. Mr Perera said a timetable was being developed with community consultation and encouraged residents to attend an information session that will take place on Wednesday 12 September, between 11am-2pm outside Priceline at Carrum Downs Regional Shopping Centre. It's proposed the new daily route will run every 40 minutes on weekdays, and hourly on weekday evenings and on the weekend. It will run from Seaford Station along Seaford Road, Ballarto, McCormicks and Hall roads, Cranbourne-Frankston roads, Sladen Street, through the Cranbourne Park Shopping Centre, ending at Cranbourne Station. "Route 760 will have priority connections with train services arriving and departing at Seaford Station and with arriving and departing services at Cranbourne Station," he said. It's expected the new timetable will become available about a month prior to the bus route starting - which has yet to be confirmed. The information session will allow residents the opportunity to speak directly with the transport planning team and see route maps. An online fact sheet, map and survey is also available at getinvolved.transport.vic.gov.au/ route760 or call 1800 800 007. The survey can be submitted before Sunday 16 September. Shadow Minister for Public Transport David Davis said the new bus route announcement was a "death rattle" and made under pressure by the "ineffectual member for Cranbourne." He said the Liberals have announced additional bus services to accompany the extensions from Cranbourne train line to Cranbourne East and Clyde as well as the extension of the Frankston line to Baxter. "Labor has been in power for 15 of the last 19 years. It's a tired Government, only now belatedly being forced to respond to the community's desperate cry for more buses." The Liberals will hold a Carrum/Mordialloc bus services forum on 11 September at the Chelsea RSL at 6.30pm regarding local public transport needs.

Kicking goals for football By Brendan Rees The next generation of Casey's athletic stars and coaches will be able to rub shoulders with an AFL team while studying. Forty-five young football players from local clubs were joined by Melbourne Football Club players and coaches on Wednesday 15 August at Casey Fields to officially launch the Chisholm Sports Academy Melbourne Football Club program. They enjoyed an intense football clinic alongside players Tim Smith, Dean Kent and Jay Kennedy-Harris, as well as coaches Troy Chaplin and Max Rooke. Prior to being drafted by Melbourne Football Club at the age of 25, defender Tim Smith completed his plumbing apprenticeship at Chisholm. Under the plan, the Chisholm Sports Academy Melbourne Football Club Program will be delivered from Chisholm's Cranbourne campus and Melbourne Football Club's Casey campus. It will see Chisholm engaged across different levels of the club including, Melbourne's Next Generation Academy and the Casey Demons VFL team. Chisholm chief executive officer Dr Rick Ede said the new initiative would allow students to combine their academic and football pursuits while developing significant transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and goal setting. Hallam girls ready for state final Female cricket is coming to the DDCA in 2018/19. 146041 Picture: STEWART CHAMBERS
By Hayley Wildes After claiming the Herald Sun Shield earlier this month, the Hallam Secondary College senior girls football team is well on its way to claiming more glory. With a spot in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) state finals up for grabs, Hallam played two games against quality opposition recently and took care of business to book their place in the big dance. Their first match-up was a quarter final test against Box Hill Secondary College. Box Hill came to play and claimed an early lead, but this Hallam team was determined to not let the opportunity slip and fought back to lead by four points at the main break. Having nullified Box Hill's offensive threats, Hallam's own offence lifted in the third quarter and delivered a game-winning five-goal to zero term. Hallam dominated the centre clearance battle and their willingness to take the game on and play an attacking brand of football paid dividends. The final quarter was a tight battle, but Hallam was always in control and claimed a strong win, 10.8 (68) to 4.6 (30). It was a game that seemingly unlocked Hallam's offensive potential and in the second match of the day - a semi final clash against Yea - Hallam was irresistible. Hallam not only staunchly defended and ensured Yea didn't look like scoring a goal, they made the most of their own attacking forays and all but won the game in the first quarter. It was a devastating quarter of football that saw Hallam kick 10 goals, while keeping Yea scoreless. The ball movement and teamwork was the difference as Hallam ran riot up forward
DDCA girls set to shine By Nick Creely
Hallam Secondary College's senior girls football team will be attempting a state title three-peat this week. and made Yea pay for any defensive mistakes. Hallam continued to pile on the pain and eventually ran out big winners, 18.6 (114) to 2.0 (12). Brooke Struylaart, Emily Browning, Courtney Jones, Lucy Grocock, Shaneece Stratton and Jess Lidsey starred for Hallam over the two games.
Hallam now turns its attention to the state final, which will be played on Thursday 30 August in Craigieburn against Sunbury Secondary College. In that final, Hallam will be hoping to create some history as they attempt to win their third SSV state title in a row.
Athletics stars of tomorrow are shining By Russell Bennett Berwick Little Athletics has once again shone on the big stage - this time in cross country events. Kids cross country running at Berwick Little Athletics has boomed this year, having grown by 30 per cent with up to 230 kids running each week over the span of the 20-week season. The attendance at weekly training, in particular, has taken off with 50 young athletes at each training session, which took place twice a week. In all facets, this season has been the most successful in the history of the club. Berwick athletes competed at three state championship events against the other 98 athletics centres across the state, both in cross country relay and individual championship events. Berwick won the Cross Country Season Championship, with the highest medal tally in Victoria over the three state championship events. All told, Berwick came away with seven gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals over the three events. Some of the standout individual performances at the state championships at Lake Dewar in July included Bailey Morrell (gold), Brodie Atcheson (silver), Rhys Hadfield (silver), Jhye Hadfield (silver), and Andrew Bull (bronze). The Berwick Little Athletics club also won the Highest Participation Award in Victoria, which is based on the percentage of athletes who participate. The award clearly demonstrates the dedication and passion for running that the kids in the Casey area have. The cross country season involves young athletes from the ages of five to 16 running distances of 750 metres, a kilometre, one-anda-half kilometres, two kilometres, and three kilometres - depending on their age. The cross country courses vary - running through hills, national parks, grassland, and trails throughout the Casey area in the varied weather condi28 STAR NEWS

The Dandenong District Cricket Association will introduce an inaugural girls competition in 2018/19, with the competition open to all DDCA clubs. As one of the most powerful cricket associations in the south-east, female participation has been high on the agenda, with the new competition set to bring more talent, and an exciting local pathway for young females. The matches -which will be played on Tuesday nights - will be split in two seasons, with two six week blocks. While the finer details are still yet to be finalized, there will be a pre-Christmas season which will kick-off on 13 November, and will be completed on 18 December. The second season will then commence on 22 January 2019, and will be completed on 26 Feburary 2019. This new system will allow clubs to continue recruiting new players during the season and therefore more teams and players will become available for the second season. The DDCA has made the recommendation that if clubs don't have enough players to register a team, they should band with another club to create a combined team and work towards recruiting more players for the second season. The game format will follow the Junior Stage 1 rules - which is similar to the under 11 junior rules - and will be played at venues where several games will be played at the same time. DDCA junior vice president Steven Richards said the new competition is testament to the rise of female cricket in the region. "We have been talking about having a girls' competition for a few years now, and we thought this year was as good as any to start," he said. "Female participation in sport is at an alltime high and cricket amongst girls is getting popular. "Myself, the DDCA junior committee and Adrian Jones have worked tirelessly over the past two to three months. Also appointing girls cricket coordinators has helped speed up the process." Richards said that there has been positive feedback to the new competition, and has a great deal of confidence that it will be a raging success, and give opportunities for female cricketers. "At this stage, we are confident of having five or six teams for the first part of the season," he said. "I'm extremely confident that it will be a success as we have the right people involved to ensure that this works now and in the years to come." The DDCA is looking for clubs within the association to register interest by 27 August, where they will supply lists of girls and their ages to start the developmental process of the competition. The date, however, may be extended to coincide with junior registration at several clubs. As excitement builds for the inaugural season, a junior girls lightning premiership competition will be run for all clubs registered with a team on 6 October, but further details will be released to clubs as they come hand. The Casey Cavaliers Big V women's program will have the chance to claim a rare championship double this weekend at Casey Stadium after both teams claimed Game 1 wins on the road in their respective competitions. The Division 1 women made the trek to Warrnambool and a dominant first half set up the win. Having held the Mermaids to just nine first-quarter points, the Cavs went on 12-0 run early in the second quarter to take total control of the game, boasting a 26-11 lead. With Tarryn Wilkin and Jamie-Lee Jeffs controlling both ends of the court, Casey was irresistible. The third quarter began much like the second did; with a Casey run. This time, a 9-0 run saw the Cavs' lead balloon out to 25 points, 50-25. From that moment on, the Cavs took their foot off the pedal and the Mermaids - to their credit - went on a barnstorming 26-6 run to cut Casey's lead to just five points with nine minutes to play. Suddenly, the game was on a knife's edge and when Warrnambool's Amy Wormald hit a pair of free throws with 45 second remaining, it was a two-point game, 66-64. When it mattered most, Casey star Tanarly Hood came to fore and drained four clutch free throws to help Casey escape with a six-point win, 70-64. Jamie-Lee Jeffs (16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals, 2 blocks), Tarryn Wilkin (12 points, 12 rebounds, 2 blocks) and Tanarly
Hood (10 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists) played vital roles. Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 women took over in the middle two quarters at Frankston Basketball Stadium on Saturday night to claim a vital game one win over the Blues. Despite trailing by two points at the first break, Casey's defensive energy was unquestionable and you go the sense that it would eventually break their Frankston opponents. It did. With Kim Shankland and Steph Leclerc forcing their way into passing lanes and causing countless deflections, Casey's offence flowed as they outscored Frankston 45-27 over the second and third quarters. Peta Rhodes' buzzer-beating triple from the carpark put an exclamation point on a great 20 minutes of basketball for Casey. Frankston outscored Casey 18-15 in the fourth, but it mattered little as the result was never in doubt. The Cavs claimed game one with an 80-67 victory. It was a fine team effort from Casey, with Rebecca Jones (18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Lauren Tuplin (11 points, 10 rebounds) Rebecca Peacock (14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 steals) and Kim Shankland (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) contributing greatly to the win. With both Cavs teams boasting 1-0 leads in their respective best-of-three grand final series, Casey Basketball could claim two Big V titles on Saturday night. At Casey Stadium, the Youth League 2 women tip off from 5pm,

The first box is ticked off By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - WEEK 1 FINALS It's been brewing for weeks now. The much anticipated blockbuster final between great rivals who have a storied, at times intense rivalry. And Berwick delivered in a qualifying final performance against Cranbourne glittered with suffocating pressure, slick ball use and a clinical nature in attack led superbly by competition leading goal kicker Harry Money, who was at his mercurial best. It's likely to send a shiver down the neck of the other finalists - the Wickers are now in top gear, and look out! With a fast start pivotal to the outcome of the game, the Wickers got the perfect start, with running machine Luke Sheppard producing two moments of magic in the opening eight minutes to boot the first two goals of the contest. Sheppard's second was simply sublime, with his banana kick sailing straight through the big sticks. It was a sign that the Wickers had arrived at their best footy, and weren't intending to stop. As the quarter wore on, the Wickers' pressure around the ball and ability to move the footy and change the angles was also going to yield scoreboard damage. Harry Money slotted his first of six after a laser like pass by Sheppard, and suddenly, Tim Gunn and Trent Thomas went bang, bang! It was an unanswered five goal headstart that was driven by their desperation at the contest. More importantly, key midfield cogs in Travis Tuck, James Magner and Bryce Rutherford were running all over the ground and having an immense impact in the absence of Madi Andrews. Within minutes of resumption, Sheppard launched a long bomb to kick his third, and capitalizing on the Eagles' turnovers - particularly off half-back - cut them to ribbons to open up a 45-point half time lead, with Steve O'Brien's side unable to score a major in the opening hour. Young jet Zak Roscoe gave the Eagles a pulse after scoring in the first minute after half time, but the Wickers were running in waves, with Travis Tuck picking up seven clearances in the quarter alone to give Money plenty of chances to excite, booting two for the quarter and combining superbly with Tim Gunn (three goals). Holt eventually warmed into the contest to snare three second half goals, but the Eagles couldn't find enough avenues to goal as the Wickers ran out the game 16.4 (100) to 7.7 (49) winners, but the likes of Anthony Vella, Kirk Dickson and Corey Ellison were valiant all day. On a day where the Wickers put in a commanding team effort as they await their next challenge in Narre Warren, Kemperman admitted things clicked for his side. "We're still looking for our best footy, but that's probably one of our better efforts, particularly in the first half. That set us up, and that level we brought was critical," he said. "It was a good start to the finals, for sure." Negating a star studded Cranbourne forward line led by Holt is no easy task, but Kemperman praised his team for its immense defensive efforts, and pointed to a rare goalless first half for the Eagles as a major tick. "They're incredible with their talent up forward, so we were thrilled with that as a starting point, and to go that far into the game not conceding a goal, I'm pretty rapt with it," he said. Special praise was deservedly put upon Money, who kicked six of the best on the finals stage. Kemperman isn't surprised. "We've put in a lot of work with Harry - he generally gets a lot of shots on goal, and he converted more which is a good sign for him," he said. "He works incredibly hard at training, at goal kicking and on his craft, so it's good to see him get some good reward for effort, and on a big stage as well." Berwick will now take on minor premiers, Narre Warren, in a semi-final blockbuster at Holm Park on Saturday. Down at Edwin Flack Reserve, Beaconsfield kept its season alive with a barnstorming elimination final win over Officer, 12.12 (84) to 6.4 (40). 30 STAR NEWS

Bailey Asher lays a crunching tackle on Cranbourne youngster Corey Ellison on Saturday. 184474 While the Kangaroos were always going to provide some form of challenge, Leigh McQuillen's charges continued to attack and broke away with mightily impressive second and third quarters on Sunday. There was plenty of heat on the footy early as the Kangaroos looked for a stoppage to stoppage type game, and with Jake Ingaliso locking down on running star Jake Bowd, and gun defender James Waldon looking to negate the influence of Taylor Joyce, it was a sloppy start, and one that kept Doug Koop's side right in the hunt. Joyce did kick the opening goal of the game after taking a cracking contested mark, but Stephen Hawkins got the crowd going only moments later after slotting a lovely running goal, and at quarter time, all but nothing separated the two sides. The Eagles broke free almost instantly after a quarter time rev-up, finding their running game off half back, with the likes of Bailey Morrish, Matt Homfray, Riley Verbi and Peter Alier using the ball superbly to give Joyce and Nathan Langley plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard. Despite big man Sean Roach playing a terrific quarter and being the dominant ruckman on the ground, the Eagles' willingness to play on at all costs and place the opposition defence under immense pressure saw the goals tumble. Missed tackles and turnovers were costly, and the Eagles managed to slam on four second quarter goals to open up a 23-point half time lead, despite a late Kangaroo goal. But it was the Eagles' third term that was the most impressive, showing a merciless at-

Officer champ Ben Tivendale looks to move the ball forward against Beaconsfield on Sunday. 184503 titude to the contest to slam on another five unanswered majors, drawing out to a 55 point three quarter time lead. Impressive midfield-forward Riley Verbi kicked an absolute belter from the pocket at the Berwick College end to rub some salt into the wounds of the Kangaroos, who were unable to stem the bleeding of what loomed as a painful loss. Knowing his side had lost the game, Doug Koop's final address to his players was pro-
found, urging them to just "do something" to show they belong at this club. He can hang his hat on knowing his side fought it out, winning the last quarter by 11 points, with encouraging performances by Tyler Clark, Ingaliso, Will Hanson and young Lachlan Ward a major tick. But it's now season over for Koop's men, and for Leigh McQuillen's side, it may be the start of something special ahead of a semi-final against Cranbourne on Sunday. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au

Burras claim finals victory By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - FINALS ROUND 1 After finishing on top of the ladder, the Doveton Eagles earned the week off, but will return to action on Saturday against Highett at Jack Barker Oval. Keysborough returned to form in their elimination final against Caulfield on Sunday, cruising to a 17.9 (111) to 6.14 (50) win. The Burras led at every break and never looked troubled with the potent forward line duo of Matthew Carnelley (six goals) and Chris Bryan (four goals) running riot. The Burras will face Murrumbeena in a semi final clash at Ross Street Reserve on Sunday. DIVISION 3 - ROUND 18 Springvale Districts locked up top spot with a massive win over Hallam, 17.18 (120) to 5.5 (35). An eight-goal to one third term did the damage as Lachlan Morrey (five goals) ran riot for the Demons. The Hawks - who finish the season without a win - were outclassed, but Daniel Gentile battled hard all day. Heatherton's season came to close with a loss to Black Rock on the road. Heatherton fell behind early and was unable to find its way back into the contest, falling 15.12 (102) to 8.12 (60). Cameron Moon and Reagan Maddaford were best in a disappointing day for the team. Hampton Park wrapped up a second position finish and sent a message to the rest of the league on the eve of finals with a comprehensive win over the third-placed Endeavour Hills. The Redbacks opened up a four-goal advantage at quarter-time and came away with a 14.9 (93) to 5.10 (40) win. Aaron Holden, Taylor Rainey and Luke Nunan were sublime for Hampton Park, while Nathan Strom and Daniel Batson were in fine form the Falcons. DIVISION 4 - FINALS ROUND 1 Carrum Patterson Lakes - having won the minor premiership - was thoroughly outplayed by Lyndhurst at Keysborough Reserve in their semi final clash. The Lightning - who finished a win behind Carrum Patterson Lakes in second position - went goalless in the first term thanks to inaccurate goal kicking, but promptly turned things around.
Russell Robertson and his Doveton Eagles kick off their finals campaign this weekend. 181759 Carrum Patterson Lakes struggled to get anything going offensively and managed just three goals in the second half, while Lyndhurst booted six to run out 9.10 (64) to 5.9 (39) winners.Hamish Browning (six goals) was a force up forward, while Jesse Walia dominated around the ground for Lyndhurst. EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 - ROUND 18 Rowville got the win over East Ringwood on Saturday, 15.10 (100) to 9.5 (59), and with that claimed fourth spot on the ladder. Matthew Traynor was impressive for the Hawks, while Riley D'Arcy booted five goals.
Rowville will take on the fifth-placed Blackburn in an elimination final on Sunday at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley in what promises to be an enthralling contest. Noble Park's impressive late-season form continued with another win - its fourth in the last five games of the season. The Bulls kicked six goals to one in a brutal final term to run out 14.6 (90) to 11.12 (78) winners. Ryan Morrison was best for the Bulls and Ali Zijai kicked four goals. Stingrays make it 11 TAC Cup victories in succession By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays will enter the TAC Cup finals as the team to beat, riding an unbelievable 11-game winning streak after taking care of the Sandringham Dragons in the final round of the home and away season on Saturday. The Rays put the game to bed in the first half as their defence - which has been stifling all season - once again proved too much for the opposition, holding the Dragons to just one first-half goal. While the defence was impressive, three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game - via Finlay Bayne, Bailey Williams and captain
Campbell Hustwaite - had Sandringham immediately on the back foot. The second quarter was more of the same as Sam Sturt kicked his first major of the day, before Bayne and Williams booted their second goals of the contest. Having put on three goals in the second term and holding the Dragons to a solitary behind, the Rays held a comprehensive 33-point lead at the main break. The likes of Matthew Cottrell and Matthew Gahan were asserting themselves on the contest, while Hustwaite was his usual dominant self around the ground. The Dragons came out fighting in the third quarter and with three minutes remaining,
the Stingrays had kicked just two goals for the term. But as good teams do, Dandenong made Sandringham pay for a small lack in concentration as the Rays, through Cottrell and Lachlan McDonnell, slammed on two goals in the final three minutes of the quarter. At three-quarter time, Dandenong's lead was 46 points. The fourth quarter was filled with freeflowing football as the game started to open up. Both teams booted four goals for the term with Stephen Cumming kicking two, while Sturt and Bayne converted their third majors for the day. Dandenong claimed the win, 14.9 (93) to
6.10 (46), and officially took out the minor premiership. Cottrell was instrumental for the Stingrays, while the trio of Sturt, Bayne (three goals each) and Williams (two goals) were dangerous all day up forward. Gahan played another fine game off halfback and Hustwaite was a monster at stoppages. The Stingrays finish the home and away season with an incredible record of 15-1, having not lost a game since April. It was a truly remarkable season and, with finals ahead, there is plenty to look forward to in September. TAC Cup finals kick off on 8 September.
The Demons falter on the eve of finals By Hayley Wildes After an incredible 12-game winning streak, the Casey Demons will enter the VFL finals on the back of two consecutive losses after falling to Williamstown on Saturday. In what was a rare perfect day for footy at Casey Fields, the first half lived up to the hype as both teams had a real crack and played some great football. After 16 minutes of back and forth play, Cam Pedersen booted the first major of the day with a beautiful set shot kick from 45 metres out. Williamstown quickly responded with their first goal of the day. Pedersen kicked his second goal later in the term, before Jeff Garlett put the afterburners on chasing down Jack Charlestown and converted the set shot to have the Demons 13 points up. cranbournenews.starcommunity.com.au
Williamstown hit back in the middle stages of the second quarter with three goals in four minutes to claim a seven-point lead. With work to do before half-time, Garlett delivered two crucial goals and a Jay Lockhart special, in which he turned his opponent inside out, had Casey five points up. A momentum-killing Williamstown goal with a minute to play saw the Demons trail by one-point at half time. The next 60 minutes of football was completely dominated by Williamstown as the Seagulls kicked 10 of the next 12 goals. Michael Gibbons was sublime, while Nick Rodda was a force inside 50. Pedersen and Garlett kicked the final two goals of the game to put some respectability on the scoreboard, but it was far too late as Williamstown ran out winners, 17.12 (114) to 12.13 (85).
Jay Lockhart (23 disposals) and Corey Wagner (21 disposals) battled hard and Cam Pedersen (three goals) - as he has been all season - was brilliant in an array of roles, while Jeff Garlett (four goals) was impressive up forward. Despite the loss, Casey (14-4) finished the season in second position and will host Geelong in a qualifying final at Casey Fields on Saturday from 2.10pm in what promises to be an enthralling battle. For Casey, the side must rediscover its defensive identity. Having only conceded over 90 points once in the opening 19 rounds of the season, that defensive mindset has gone missing in the past two weeks resulting in scores against of 91 and 114. A win will see the Demons host a home preliminary final after a week off, while a loss will see them return to Casey Fields next week in a must-win semi final.
