"As the region experienced rapid population growth and urbanisation, the Berwick and Narre Warren area become the City of Berwick in 1973, which was later joined with most of the City of Cranbourne and a small part of the City of Knox to become the City of Casey in 1994.

The City of Casey is hosting a community celebration to mark the 150th anniversary since the Shire of Berwick was formed.

The free community event, to be held this Saturday, 1 September, will reflect on the history of the area and celebrate the community's transformation over the past 150 years since the Shire of Berwick was proclaimed in 1868.

There will be a community barbecue, carnival rides, face painting, performances, historic displays, wood-chopping demonstrations and some good old-fashioned fun with 19th century games including apple bobbing, egg tossing and sack races.

Community News National Disability Insurance Scheme is nearly here The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will arrive in the City of Casey on 1 September 2018.

The City of Casey is encouraging residents and existing Council care clients to test if they’re eligible for the scheme, as the City of Casey has not registered to be a service provider.

For those clients who currently receive care from Council and are eligible for the NDIS, there will be an extensive transition process to transfer clients to their new service provider.

For those who are in ineligible, Council will continue to provide its high-quality services to these residents.

Sparkie jailed for trafficking cocaine

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A 32-year-old self-employed electrician has been jailed for sourcing 196 grams of cocaine from an "up-line supplier" during late 2016-early 2017.

Peter Harris, a former Berwick Secondary College student still living in the South East, was sentenced for drug trafficking at the Victorian County Court on 23 August.

He pleaded guilty to sourcing the cocaine for pick-up by a partner during three transactions between 23 December 2016 and 26 January 2017.

The deals involved the exchange of "thousands of dollars" and cocaine of an unknown purity. It was at a higher level than merely funding Harris's own drug habit, Judge Paul Higham said during sentencing.

The offending followed just a few weeks after being placed on a corrections order at Dandenong Magistrates' Court for trafficking cocaine and ecstasy.

"Those of us who sit in criminal courts are aware of this one simple truth - that is drugs

are tearing the heart out of our community," Judge Higham said.

The "evil trade" was to blame for "losing a generation", its participants could expect to be punished, the judge said.

What starts as a "fun Saturday night" can quickly spiral into the "horrors of addiction", he said.

Many lose everything including their lives.

Harris himself came close but for being fortunate enough to retain the love and support of his family and a non-drug-using partner.

Harris also pleaded guilty to being a prohibited person possessing an imitation firearm.

The fake weapon was seized from his home's kitchen cupboard during his arrest in March 2017.

Harris undisputedly claimed it was a prop used by a friend dressed up as a cowboy at a fancy-dress party.

As a teen, Harris - who came from a "good, honest and hard-working" family - started using MDMA and amphetamines out with friends. By 20, he was using cocaine.

"Recreational" use escalated to depen-

dence after being wracked with guilt over the suicide of a close friend, Judge Higham noted.

Harris became entrenched in a "drug subculture", devoting himself to obtaining, using and recovering from drugs.

Consuming up to four grams on weekends, he broke up with a partner, cut down on his work and replaced his dwindling income with proceeds from trafficking.

Judge Higham noted Harris completed the drug treatment requirements of his original 18-month correction order.

Harris's mother stated that they had since "got the old Pete back", the judge said.

It was noted that Harris had shown insight, remorse and taken great steps towards his rehabilitation.

Judge Higham said the sentence was crafted to punish Harris, but for him to "not lose hope".

"But the objective gravity (of the offending) is such that a term of imprisonment must be served."

Harris was jailed for 10 months followed by a supervised 18-month corrections order including judicial monitoring, mental health and drug counselling.

Running for his life

By Cam Lucadou-Wells Nothing will stop Lynbrook husband and dad Brad Scicluna from running.

In fact, the 41-year-old engineer at Dandenong bus manufacturer Volgren believes that exercise has been a tonic after a devastating diagnosis of stage-4 gall bladder cancer a year ago.

It’s a rare cancer that means Mr Scicluna is without any PBS-listed treatment options such as immunology. He discovered that not all cancers are equal.

There’s a potentially life-extending medication Herceptin that is available on the PBS for breast cancer patients but not gall bladder cancer, Mr Scicluna says.

The treatment cost would be a prohibitive $70,000 a year.

A specialist told him “the more money you have the longer you live.”

It’s a form of discrimination that Mr Scicluna is challenging.

He’s put his name to a National Oncology Alliance campaign on behalf of more than 6000 Australians with cancer without PBS-listed medications.

He will be attending a Canforum in Canberra in September, in the hope of putting his case to Health Minister Greg Hunt.

Before June 2017, Mr Scicluna - a nonsmoker, light drinker and avid runner - had rarely seen the inside of a hospital.

He complained to a doctor of a sore back

while he was boundary umpiring in the Casey Cardinia Football League. It was discovered that he had cancer that had spread to his lower vertebrae.

Since months of chemo and radiotherapy, Mr Scicluna’s condition has fortunately stabilised. He has had no treatment for two months and run well past his expiry date - at least the one that doctors expected.

And continued running about six kilometres a day, with a view to running 10 kilometres at the Melbourne Marathon in October.

“It’s a bit of a miracle,” Mr Scicluna said.

“The oncologist has only seen one other case like me. You wouldn’t know there was anything wrong with me.”

Mr Scicluna believes exercise helped ward off the side-effects of chemo and radiotherapy.

He’d work out for 30 minutes before chemo, and for 30 minutes after.

He’s still worked - but wound it back to 40 hours a week, cut out sugars in a healthy-eating regime, and taken family holidays with wife Catherine and daughters Olivia and Charlotte.

In September, Brad and Catherine will renew their vows.

The family had cancelled a dream trip to Hawaii and then Disneyland due to Mr Scicluna being unable to get travel insurance.

“We just should have done it earlier,” Ms Scicluna said.

“People should just do things - don’t put them off.

Drunk L-plater pays the price

By Cam Lucadou-Wells A drunken learner driver who lost control of her car in Narre Warren has taken out a loan to pay off a resultant $20,000 damage bill, a court heard.

Tegan Mumford, 21, of Narre Warren, recorded a blood-alcohol level of 0.159 soon after she drove into two vehicles, trees and a fence about 2am on 22 April 2018, Dandenong Magistrates' Court heard.

It was well above the 0.00 restriction applied to L-platers such as herself.

The early-childhood worker had been drinking that night, visiting Empire nightclub for about an hour until a friend was kicked out.

Mumford drove from a friend's address with an L-plater friend in the front passenger seat.

Along the way, she struck a vehicle. Then she panicked, hit the accelerator, mounted a roundabout, struck down trees, careered into a fence and a 2005 Ford LTD. She was also charged with driving without L plates and not having an experienced passenger on board.

Police didn't charge her with any further driving charges arising from the crash itself.

Magistrate Jack Vandersteen noted that Mumford was not licenced to drive with alcohol in her system.

Had someone been injured or killed, the accused would have faced a lengthy jail term for culpable driving, he said.

"You can just see every day in court that a decision made can have very far-reaching consequences.

"You have made a terrible mistake. But as bad as it was, it could have been worse."

Mr Vandersteen noted the accused's lack of priors, early guilty plea, cooperation with police and her "doing the right thing" by repaying the damage.

Mumford was disqualified from driving for 15 months and fined $600.

Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested a teenager following a series of alleged thefts of motor vehicles in the area.

A search warrant was executed at a Narre Warren South address about 6.30am on Tuesday, 28 August, with a 16-year-old boy arrested at the scene.

He has been charged with a number of offences, including vehicle theft and driving offences, evading police, dangerous conduct and weapon possession.

The teen will appear before a children’s court.

The charges related to alleged incidents including thefts of motor vehicles and evading police in the Narre Warren and Cranbourne areas over the past two weeks.

IN BRIEF Three times the legal limit A Narre Warren woman was caught by members of Casey Highway Patrol travelling at 110k/h in an 80 km/h zone on the Princes Highway in Hallam on Thursday, 23 August.

The 54 year old was intercepted by police at 4.30pm in her 2005 Mercedes Benz C180K before returning a positive preliminary breath test and being subsequently transported to the Narre Warren Police Station where she returned a blood alcohol concentration reading of 0.16.

The driver was served a section 51 notice, immediately suspending her licence, her vehicle was impounded due to having prior drink driving convictions and she will be summonsed to appear before the magistrate in due course.

Berwick’s big game Berwick City Soccer Club will benefit from the increase in funding for the Labor Government's The World Game Facilities Fund (TWGFF) after Luke Donnellan MP announced a grant of $100,000 to the Berwick City Soccer Club at Jack Thomas Reserve.

This funding will support the installation of drainage and irrigation and will upgrade the playing surface to warm-season grass for three junior pitches at Jack Thomas Reserve.

"We're big supporters of community sport, and this grant will allow Berwick City Soccer Club to support more players and teams who want to play the world game," member for Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said.

"We want as many Victorians as possible to be

living a healthy and active lifestyle, that means we need to give as many Victorians as possible access to quality facilities."

Berwick City Soccer Club is the largest club in Casey with significant participation of females, juniors and people with a disability. This funding will improve the quality and safety of the pitches for the juniors and enable those juniors on the waiting list access to a pitch.

The Labor Government recently announced that it had doubled funding available through TWGFF due to the program's popularity.

TWGFF will now invest $5 million to support local soccer clubs and organisations instead of the original $2.5 million.

TWGFF offers grants of up to $250,000 for projects such as lighting, pitch redevelopments and unisex accessible change rooms.

With over 350,000 participants statewide and millions of fans tuning in to the recent World Cup, soccer is more popular than ever, especially amongst women and girls.

TWGFF is helping local football clubs upgrade existing facilities or build new ones across Metropolitan Melbourne and regional Australia.

The funding is part of the Labor Government's strong boost to sport and active recreation - to encourage all Victorians to get out there and get active. Since 2014 the government has invested over $34 million in football facilities.

Shoppers at Woolworths in Berwick were told to evacuate at 8am this morning, 24 August after smoke was discovered emanating from some equipment in the plant room.

Around six customers were evacuated along with a number of team members. None of them were injured or harmed.

There is no evidence at this stage that fire broke out in the plant room.

"The safety of customers and team members is always our number one priority," a Woolworth's spokesperson said.

"Our Berwick team did the right thing and acted quickly to evacuate the store in line with our established safety procedures.

"The store has ceased trading until further notice and local customers are welcome to visit our Beaconsfield and Fountain Gate stores in the interim.

"We're closely assisting authorities with investigations into the cause of the incident."

My name is Gavin and I am a compulsive gambler and also an active member of Gamblers Anonymous.

Reading the article 'Shocking losses' in the Berwick Star News last Thursday, I felt it was important to make people aware that compulsive gambling is an illness, just as alcoholism is.

People in the grip of this illness spend countless time and money in an effort to avoid problems in their lives and chase the elusive win which they feel will solve all their problems.

The problem is that there is no amount that will ever satisfy them. If they win they dream of bigger things. If they lose they just keep chasing their losses.

I feel that better awareness and education of our entire populous is needed.

I tried the government funded help scheme which only wanted to me to control my gambling. But not taking anything away from the scheme, this type of counselling will never work for the compulsive gambler as I feel that only someone who has been a compulsive gambler can truly understand and help those who need and want help.

I hope this helps anyone in the community that is in need of help and if you wish to get in touch or find a meeting just look up online.

Libs pledge more eyes on local crime A Liberal Nationals Government will focus on more police on the beat, tougher sentencing and $24 million for more local community safety measures like CCTV cameras in at risk areas across Victoria.

As part of this plan, an elected Liberal Nationals Government will provide $250,000 towards extending the current CCTV security camera network in Hampton Park.

The Hampton Park CCTV program has been widely successful assisting Victoria Police in responding to accidents and crime including a motor vehicle crashing into the Commonwealth Bank and the February gang shooting at a tattoo parlour.

Having an extensive CCTV network at Hampton Park Shopping Centre will act as a deterrent for would be criminals and assist police in catching criminals when they do offend.

This announcement follows other community focused crime prevention measures an-

nounced by the Liberal Nationals including establishing highly visible Police shopfronts in 12 major shopping centres, including at Fountain Gate, re-establish a 'Police in Schools' program, to allow police to better engage with young Victorians, fund the establishment of a Victoria Police Mobile CCTV camera rollout and commit $2 million over four years to Neighbourhood Watch for local crime prevention initiatives.

Under Daniel Andrews, crime is out of control and only the Liberal Nationals are committed to ensuring all Victorians feel safe in their communities.

"When it comes to the crime crisis we are seeing locally, Daniel Andrews and Labor have been missing in action and haven't delivered enough local police or safety measures like better public lighting and CCTV cameras for the Hampton Park community," shadow minister for community safety Ed-

ward O'Donohue said.

"Hampton Park is desperate for a strong representative like Susan Serey who will fight for the local community and bring the solutions needed to address this crime wave."

Ms Serey said, "Violent crime and youth gangs are out of control under Daniel Andrews and communities like Hampton Park are paying the price.

"I've seen big changes here in my local community with violent crime at record levels.

"Residents and traders are left to deal with the consequences and have repeatedly asked the Andrews Labor Government for help but without any response."

Ms Serey said Daniel Andrews has let crime get out of control in Victoria and only a Matthew Guy led government will deliver tough on crime and community safety polices to keep residents in Hampton Park safe.

Council promises blitz on residential truck parking residential areas is a significant problem within the municipality and poses several issues including the impact on neighbourhood amenity, creating noise issues for adjoining properties, safety risks associated with poor visibility and potential damage to underground infrastructure.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett said that despite undertaking two prior patrols in the past few months residents continue to contact Council about trucks parking illegally

in residential areas.

"Our officers have a duty to undertake patrols such as this one to ensure the safety of all our residents," said the Mayor.

"We are responding directly to complaints received from concerned residents who have been impacted by these vehicles directly in their streets.

"As with our previous two patrols we hope to again find a high level of compliance".

Officers will be monitoring site line issues, unsightly issues and safety issues including the lack of reflectors at night, and the narrowing of roads. They will also clamp down on noise issues relating to trucks starting their engines prior to 7am in residential areas.

Children kickstart their own business Since Berwick’s Carmen Williams quit her job just under a year ago, she has been on a vertical learning curve growing her business and has enjoyed sharing her learnings with her two young children, Tristan and Lila.

In parallel to this she coached her children’s father to start his own business.

Watching both their parents in business they naturally decided to emulate this and start their own business.

“I supported them to identify the business that they wanted to start which was selling honey crackles and the basics of a business plan so that the bank of mum would agree that it is a good investment and provide capital,” Ms Williams said.

“But this was only the start. Having the idea is one thing, execution is everything.

“Execution required focus, hard work and most of all going out of their comfort zone.”

The two children sold honey crackles in the supermarket whist buying more ingredients, on social media to friends and family, door to door and at the Christmas nights.

They learnt to feel the fear of approaching strangers’ cold and did it anyway.

They perfected their sales pitch and refined their approach.

“After paying the bank of mum back they had made $80 which is more money than they have ever had,” she said.

“And now they know how to make money.

“They have since started a number of different businesses including selling cold water at a park on a hot day and hosting an event where they served cheese toasties and cupcakes.”

Our teens to star in School Spectacular

Depending upon the role rehearsals commence six to seven months out from the event and those in the Mass Dance and Mass Choir make weekly rehearsal commitments from five months prior to the event.

It's a large commitment but very rewarding for those involved.

Berwick College students Ulani Volk, Haycee Kerslake and Emma Smith will be a part of the ensemble.

"I saw VSSS on TV and I thought it looked like a lot of fun," Ms Volk said.

"The benefit of being a part of VSSS is the experience and getting to meet new people

from different areas."

Ms Kerslake said, "I was super excited and shocked that I could be a part of the great experience again.

"I'll make heaps of good friends and I'll get to work with so many amazing chorographers and people."

Ms Smith said she is excited to see what it's going to be like to be involved in a professional show.

"You get to meet so many new people and make some amazing friends along the way," she said.

"When I found out I was selected I was really excited and happy for myself because I managed to get what I had aimed for.

"I was proud I had made it through."

Haileybury College in Berwick held their annual Book Week Parade on Friday, 24 August.

“We had activities all week, including treasure hunts and craft activities at lunchtime and head of campus Mrs Rawlings read a story at recess on Friday,” head of library services Jessica Gallagher said.

“We encouraged the students to dress as a character from a book, and to bring the book with them to school. They got a point for dressing up, and another for having the book.

“They got points for participating in the audience of recess readers and the treasure hunts too and we awarded a trophy at Friday’s assembly to the class who had the most points which was Prep R.” The college also had workshops, authors and illustrators visit the junior and middle school students throughout the week - 14 sessions in total.

The 2018 Victorian State Schools Spectacular (VSSS) is returning to Melbourne Arena for two shows on 15 September.

This year's production 'With The Beat' explores ideas of belonging and identity and features a 75-piece orchestra, 31 principal vocalists, 16 principal dancers, 20 principal ensemble dancers, nine backing vocalists, 44 Victorian State Schools Choir members, 55 specialist dancers / singers, a magician, a puppeteer, a 1300 voice choir and 1125 mass dancers.

Taking part in the Spectacular provides a unique training opportunity for students onstage, as well as behind the scenes in audio, lighting, video production, stage management, costume, make-up, marketing and photography.

The annual performance will see 33 secondary students and 90 Tertiary / TAFE students learning and working across these platforms in 2018.

There are 80 schools from around the state involved in the Mass Dance and 72 schools involved in the Mass Choir.

The schools involved in the Mass Dance rehearse individually and then meet four times in school groups between February and August with the choreographers to consolidate what they have been rehearsing.

They have to learn 14 routines to perform on the night.

Those in the Mass Choir rehearse individually at their schools before meeting as a group of over 1000 at the Melbourne Town Hall twice before the September event.

The students have to learn 17 songs to perform on the night.

Gearing up for sports Berwick schools are expected to receive nearly $100,000 in sports gear from Coles this month after collecting more than 2.2 million vouchers at their local supermarkets through Coles' Sports for Schools program.

Over coming weeks, Coles will deliver an extensive range of quality sports gear to around 45 local primary and secondary schools in the region.

Sports gear will include popular items such as cricket and softball bats, footballs, basketballs, javelins, hockey sticks, skipping ropes, racquets, first aid kits and nets.

The local schools were among more than 7000 schools across Australia that participated in the Sports for Schools program between February and April this year by collecting over 200 million vouchers at Coles.

The local school to receive the most sporting equipment will be Oatlands Primary School after collecting more than 145,000 vouchers as part of the Sports for Schools program.

World champion athlete Sally Pearson said it was exciting to hear that so much equipment will be delivered to schools across the community.

"It's a dream come true for schools to be given all this equipment enabling kids to keep fit and healthy. Hopefully we'll see future Olympic Champions as a result of this Coles initiative," she said.

State General Manager Mark O'Connor said Coles was delighted to be delivering sports equipment to local schools.

City of Casey mayor Geoff Ablett said the visitor economy provides broad employment local opportunities for residents, and its strong 7.6 per cent year on year growth shows great promise for the future.

Casey Cardinia Tourism Advisory Committee has successfully transitioned to an independent, skills-based, regional tourism board called the Casey Cardinia Region Tourism Organisation.

An official thank you and celebration function was held at Bunjil Place on Wednesday, 22 August evening.

In 2013, Cardinia Shire Council adopted a tourism strategy, which led to the creation of a committee.

Cardinia Shire Council and City of Casey came together in partnership and formed the Casey Cardinia Tourism Advisory Committee to enable a regional focus for tourism.

"The strategy that evolved from this partnership was not limited to our own backyard and addressed broader regional needs," Cardinia mayor Collin Ross said.

"The leadership of the committee members and their insights in the tourism industry has enabled council to make some great decisions around how we support tourism in our region."

Council recently adopted the Casey Cardinia Visitation Strategy 2017-20 to encourage the establishment of tourism activities and facilities in appropriate areas of the shire.

Led by industry and supported by both councils, the strategy provides a strong plan to strengthen the region's tourism industry and provide opportunities for tourism operators and affiliated businesses.

As part of the strategy, the advisory has formed the Casey Cardinia Region Tourism Organisation, in replacement.

The new board comprises of chairwoman Cathy Main, Chris Russell, Kristina Burke, Mark Jouvelet, Adam Khan, Robynne O'Halloran, Richard Sherman, Michael Johnson, Cr Leticia Wilmot and Cr Amanda Stapledon.

Service start for NDIS The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will rollout in the City of Casey on 1 September.

The NDIS is a new way of delivering services and support to people with a permanent disability in Australia.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) is responsible for implementing the scheme.

The City of Casey did not register to be a service provider; however it will undertake an extensive transition period with clients that currently receive Council services.

It is estimated that by July 2019, more than 10,500 residents from Southern Melbourne

will have transitioned to the scheme.

The decision for Casey not to become a service provider was made following advice from industry experts, which concluded that council could not compete with the high number of local specialist providers already delivering services to clients.

City of Casey Mayor Cr Geoff Ablett reminded residents who currently receive care from Council that they will be supported throughout this process of change.

"Council is urging residents to first test if they are eligible for the NDIS," he said.

"If residents who currently receive Council services are eligible for the NDIS, they will be

assisted to transition to their new provider by the City of Casey NDIS Transition Officer.

"Clients will still be able to access the same level of services with Community Care whilst organising the transition to their new provider.

"If people are not eligible for the NDIS, Council will continue to provide a high-level of service for residents aged under 65 years (under 50 years for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people) who have a disability."

Information sessions are being held in the City of Casey, as well as neighbouring municipalities Greater Dandenong and Cardinia Shire Council.

A Local Area Coordinator (LAC) has been

assigned to Casey to work in partnership with the NDIS to implement the scheme at a local level.

The City of Casey's LAC is LaTrobe Community Health Service. The LAC will assist clients to understand the benefits of the NDIS, support them to access the NDIS and find service providers, as well as assist them in creating a plan so that people are supported throughout the entire process.

Council's Community Care clients can contact the City of Casey NDIS Transition Officer at any stage to discuss their services on 9705 5444.

Nine children from Casey will be heading to Newcastle, NSW to showcase their talents in musical theatre.

Theatre trip a good act Nine children from Casey will be heading to Newcastle, NSW to showcase their talents in musical theatre in front of professional theatre artists from Australia and Broadway for the Junior Theatre Celebration at the end of October.

Players Theatre Company is taking 20 children, aged between eight and 18 to the event to perform for the first time from Friday, 26 October to Saturday, 27 October.

A select few will also be invited to travel up a week before to participate in a pilot program and will perform alongside other children from around Australia in 'Sister Act Jr' which will open the celebration on the Friday night.

cating and the children also get to be involved in workshops with these professionals.

Then nine Casey children are Cooper James,Charlize James, Ebony Portelli, Emily Franklin, Lillyarna Waters, Kaleb Parkinson, Jessie McGuigan, Abbey McGuigan and Georgia Neilson.

The director Victoria Rendall and Choreographer Melia Bell are also from Casey.

Ms Rendall has been a Players Theatre Company committee member for nearly 10 years and teaches performing arts at Kilberry Valley Primary school in Hampton Park.

Ms Bell is a 16 year old student at St. Francis Xavier Secondary College in Beaconsfield.

They have been braving the rather cool and windy weather and have participated in four consecutive tennis lessons at the school.

The Berwick Primary school physical education Staff and coaches from Berwick tennis Club's Set4Tennis have been delivering a highly skilled and enjoyable program.

This also included the Grade 1 and Grade 2 year levels.

"The students have learnt a sport they can play for life and they have learnt tennis skills as well as life skills," Berwick Tennis Club head coach Allison Miller said.

"We encourage students to come to the club and try out lessons.

Family drives to success It's been a little over four decades since a 22-year-old-rev-head lobbed into Nar Nar Goon chasing his dream.

The story of Pakenham Mazda is a tale that dates back to 1974 when Bruce Clough bought an existing Nar Nar Goon business consisting of used car sales, a towing service, a mechanical workshop and a service station.

Over the years Bruce and his wife Sue grew both the business and a young family, with four boys - Paul, Kane, Ben and Zac - being welcomed into the fold.

In 1994 they acquired the new car Mazda franchise from Pakenham and relocated it to their iconic Nar Nar Goon premises.

After many years of growth, the Clough family decided it was time to reinvest in both the Mazda brand and the local area in order to continue to look after their customers.

So, in December 2016, they unveiled the new Pakenham Mazda showroom, which would deliver premium customer service with state-of-art servicing and sales facilities.

A timeline marking significant developments in the company's history hangs proudly in the foyer, reflecting the Clough journey so far.

Paul now heads up the operation as Dealer Principal, Kane is Sales Manager, Zac is Service Manager and Ben heads up the pre-delivery operation.

"Our point of difference is our relationship with the local area. We have local knowledge and a focus on relationships and customer service - qualities that were instilled in us by Dad," Paul said.

"We are happy to be judged on how we treat our customers. Networking and word of mouth has always been a big part of our success - and will continue to be."

Dad’s Group to connect

By Jessica Anstice A Dad’s Group that will aim to connect dads in a family friendly environment where they are encouraged to spend quality time with their children may soon be formed in Berwick.

Dad’s Group has submitted their idea to Pick My Project.

Pick My Project is a Victorian community grants initiative with at least $1 million in funding available in each metro and regional area.

Residents are eligible to vote for three project ideas in their local community to help make them a reality.

Dad’s Group connects dads in local ethnic and migrant communities, so they can share their experiences, make new friends, and enjoy healthier, happier family lives.

“The project will initially be looking into the diverse community to begin with,” project leader Seeyer Rahimi said.

“Overtime we will be widening the idea of the Dads Group to not only the diverse cultural community.”

The sessions/catch ups will be self-managed by one to two individuals in the community who wish to take on the responsibility and will be facilitated by Dad’s Group by providing the right support.

Engaging new dads with regular catch ups improves parent-child bonding at a very early age, reduces anxiety associated with changing relationship dynamics and improves partner relationships.

Dad’s Group Inc. CEO Tom Docking said there is nothing else out there like this program which helps new dads as well as mums.

Dad’s Group Inc has around 50 groups across Australia.

“We’ve proven that what we are doing works really well for supporting new fathers and families,” Mr Docking said.

“This project is about reaching out to a specific demographic that aren’t supported and are isolated due to cultural and language barriers.”

Book parade at Hillcrest This year's annual Book Week Parade at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North took on a unique twist with some big surprises for the winning students.

The theme for Book Week this year was Find Your Treasure and in true form many treasured books were sighted, enjoyed and most importantly read.

The judges had the most difficult time trying to decide the winners and all characters were considered winners as the work and dedication undertaken for this spectacular literary display was outstanding.

Ausmumprenuer of the Year finalist, Karen Alsop of Story Art, visited the parade on Thursday, 23 August, with her green screen setup to take character photographs of each of the winners. Although the students had opportunity to view their photos on the big screen during the shoot, it wasn't until that evening when Mrs Alsop shared the first of the series online that the College community got a taste of what's to come.

Discovery Centre director, Michelle Nye and artist Mrs Alsop came up with the idea to create a commemorative story book featuring the students and teachers in costume, transported into their respective book scenes with the power of Photoshop. The book will be on display in the Hillcrest Christian College Discovery Centre aka library and available for parents to purchase a copy. Mrs Nye spoke of the idea of photographing students in order to create a living memory book, full of stories because Book Week is all about books and reading and what's better than seeing yourself in the actual story?

Learn to play the bagpipes The Berwick Pipers INC is interested in attracting new members to its group, particularly experienced bagpipe players. The group play B Flat chanters in our bagpipes as it gives them the greatest chance of helping concert bands and orchestras. The Pipers are a group of musicians who play the Great Highland Bagpipe. They have assisted Berwick Rotary on Australia days at Pioneer Park by playing in the Official Party and providing incidental music around the grounds. They perform around the City of Casey at a variety of venues to entertain the public but we also teach

learners to play the great highland bagpipe. Despite the group currently having a mid-year break, lessons for their learners continue.

By Hayley Wildes After claiming the Herald Sun Shield earlier this month, the Hallam Secondary College senior girls football team is well on its way to claiming more glory.

With a spot in the School Sports Victoria (SSV) state finals up for grabs, Hallam played two games against quality opposition recently and took care of business to book their place in the big dance.

Their first match-up was a quarter final test against Box Hill Secondary College. Box Hill came to play and claimed an early lead, but this Hallam team was determined to not let the opportunity slip and fought back to lead by four points at the main break.

Having nullified Box Hill's offensive threats, Hallam's own offence lifted in the third quarter and delivered a game-winning five-goal to zero term. Hallam dominated the centre clearance battle and their willingness to take the game on and play an attacking brand of football paid dividends.

The final quarter was a tight battle, but Hallam was always in control and claimed a strong win, 10.8 (68) to 4.6 (30).

It was a game that seemingly unlocked Hallam's offensive potential and in the second match of the day - a semi final clash against Yea - Hallam was irresistible.

Hallam not only staunchly defended and ensured Yea didn't look like scoring a goal, they made the most of their own attacking forays and all but won the game in the first quarter.

It was a devastating quarter of football that saw Hallam kick 10 goals, while keeping Yea scoreless. The ball movement and teamwork was the difference as Hallam ran riot up forward

DDCA girls set to shine

Hallam Secondary College's senior girls football team will be attempting a state title three-peat this week. and made Yea pay for any defensive mistakes.

Hallam continued to pile on the pain and eventually ran out big winners, 18.6 (114) to 2.0 (12).

Brooke Struylaart, Emily Browning, Courtney Jones, Lucy Grocock, Shaneece Stratton and Jess Lidsey starred for Hallam over the two games.

Hallam now turns its attention to the state final, which will be played on Thursday 30 August in Craigieburn against Sunbury Secondary College.

In that final, Hallam will be hoping to create some history as they attempt to win their third SSV state title in a row.

Athletics stars of tomorrow are shining

By Russell Bennett Berwick Little Athletics has once again shone on the big stage - this time in cross country events.

Kids cross country running at Berwick Little Athletics has boomed this year, having grown by 30 per cent with up to 230 kids running each week over the span of the 20-week season.

The attendance at weekly training, in particular, has taken off with 50 young athletes at each training session, which took place twice a week.

In all facets, this season has been the most successful in the history of the club.

Berwick athletes competed at three state championship events against the other 98 athletics centres across the state, both in cross country relay and individual championship events.

Berwick won the Cross Country Season Championship, with the highest medal tally in Victoria over the three state championship events. All told, Berwick came away with seven gold, seven silver, and five bronze medals over the three events.

Some of the standout individual performances at the state championships at Lake Dewar in July included Bailey Morrell (gold), Brodie Atcheson (silver), Rhys Hadfield (silver), Jhye Hadfield (silver), and Andrew Bull (bronze). The Berwick Little Athletics club also won the Highest Participation Award in Victoria, which is based on the percentage of athletes who participate. The award clearly demonstrates the dedication and passion for running that the kids in the Casey area have.

The cross country season involves young athletes from the ages of five to 16 running distances of 750 metres, a kilometre, one-anda-half kilometres, two kilometres, and three kilometres - depending on their age. The Dandenong District Cricket Association will introduce an inaugural girls competition in 2018/19, with the competition open to all DDCA clubs.

As one of the most powerful cricket associations in the south-east, female participation has been high on the agenda, with the new competition set to bring more talent, and an exciting local pathway for young females.

The matches -which will be played on Tuesday nights - will be split in two seasons, with two six week blocks.

While the finer details are still yet to be finalized, there will be a pre-Christmas season which will kick-off on 13 November, and will be completed on 18 December. The second season will then commence on 22 January 2019, and will be completed on 26 Feburary 2019.

This new system will allow clubs to continue recruiting new players during the season and therefore more teams and players will become available for the second season.

The DDCA has made the recommendation that if clubs don't have enough players to register a team, they should band with another club to create a combined team and work towards recruiting more players for the second season.

The game format will follow the Junior Stage 1 rules - which is similar to the under 11 junior rules - and will be played at venues where several games will be played at the same time.

DDCA junior vice president Steven Richards said the new competition is testament to the rise of female cricket in the region.

"We have been talking about having a girls' competition for a few years now, and we thought this year was as good as any to start," he said.

"Female participation in sport is at an alltime high and cricket amongst girls is getting popular.

"Myself, the DDCA junior committee and Adrian Jones have worked tirelessly over the past two to three months. Also appointing girls cricket coordinators has helped speed up the process."

Richards said that there has been positive feedback to the new competition, and has a great deal of confidence that it will be a raging success, and give opportunities for female cricketers.

"At this stage, we are confident of having five or six teams for the first part of the season," he said.

"I'm extremely confident that it will be a success as we have the right people involved to ensure that this works now and in the years to come."

The DDCA is looking for clubs within the association to register interest by 27 August, where they will supply lists of girls and their ages to start the developmental process of the competition. The date, however, may be extended to coincide with junior registration at several clubs.

As excitement builds for the inaugural season, a junior girls lightning premiership competition will be run for all clubs registered with a team on 6 October, but further details will be released to clubs as they come hand.

The Casey Cavaliers Big V women's program will have the chance to claim a rare championship double this weekend at Casey Stadium after both teams claimed Game 1 wins on the road in their respective competitions.

The Division 1 women made the trek to Warrnambool and a dominant first half set up the win. Having held the Mermaids to just nine first-quarter points, the Cavs went on 12-0 run early in the second quarter to take total control of the game, boasting a 26-11 lead.

With Tarryn Wilkin and Jamie-Lee Jeffs controlling both ends of the court, Casey was irresistible.

The third quarter began much like the second did; with a Casey run. This time, a 9-0 run saw the Cavs' lead balloon out to 25 points, 50-25.

From that moment on, the Cavs took their foot off the pedal and the Mermaids - to their credit - went on a barnstorming 26-6 run to cut Casey's lead to just five points with nine minutes to play.

Suddenly, the game was on a knife's edge and when Warrnambool's Amy Wormald hit a pair of free throws with 45 second remaining, it was a two-point game, 66-64.

When it mattered most, Casey star Tanarly Hood came to fore and drained four clutch free throws to help Casey escape with a six-point win, 70-64.

Meanwhile, the Youth League 2 women took over in the middle two quarters at Frankston Basketball Stadium on Saturday night to claim a vital game one win over the Blues.

Despite trailing by two points at the first break, Casey's defensive energy was unquestionable and you go the sense that it would eventually break their Frankston opponents.

It did.

With Kim Shankland and Steph Leclerc forcing their way into passing lanes and causing countless deflections, Casey's offence flowed as they outscored Frankston 45-27 over the second and third quarters.

Peta Rhodes' buzzer-beating triple from the carpark put an exclamation point on a great 20 minutes of basketball for Casey.

Frankston outscored Casey 18-15 in the fourth, but it mattered little as the result was never in doubt. The Cavs claimed game one with an 80-67 victory.

It was a fine team effort from Casey, with Rebecca Jones (18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals), Lauren Tuplin (11 points, 10 rebounds) Rebecca Peacock (14 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 6 steals) and Kim Shankland (13 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals) contributing greatly to the win.

The first box is ticked off

By Nick Creely SOUTH EAST FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE REVIEW - WEEK 1 FINALS It's been brewing for weeks now.

The much anticipated blockbuster final between great rivals who have a storied, at times intense rivalry.

And Berwick delivered in a qualifying final performance against Cranbourne glittered with suffocating pressure, slick ball use and a clinical nature in attack led superbly by competition leading goal kicker Harry Money, who was at his mercurial best.

It's likely to send a shiver down the neck of the other finalists - the Wickers are now in top gear, and look out!

With a fast start pivotal to the outcome of the game, the Wickers got the perfect start, with running machine Luke Sheppard producing two moments of magic in the opening eight minutes to boot the first two goals of the contest.

Sheppard's second was simply sublime, with his banana kick sailing straight through the big sticks. It was a sign that the Wickers had arrived at their best footy, and weren't intending to stop.

As the quarter wore on, the Wickers' pressure around the ball and ability to move the footy and change the angles was also going to yield scoreboard damage.

Harry Money slotted his first of six after a laser like pass by Sheppard, and suddenly, Tim Gunn and Trent Thomas went bang, bang!

It was an unanswered five goal headstart that was driven by their desperation at the contest. More importantly, key midfield cogs in Travis Tuck, James Magner and Bryce Rutherford were running all over the ground and having an immense impact in the absence of Madi Andrews.

Within minutes of resumption, Sheppard launched a long bomb to kick his third, and capitalizing on the Eagles' turnovers - particularly off half-back - cut them to ribbons to open up a 45-point half time lead, with Steve O'Brien's side unable to score a major in the opening hour.

Young jet Zak Roscoe gave the Eagles a pulse after scoring in the first minute after half time, but the Wickers were running in waves, with Travis Tuck picking up seven clearances in the quarter alone to give Money plenty of chances to excite, booting two for the quarter and combining superbly with Tim Gunn (three goals).

Holt eventually warmed into the contest to snare three second half goals, but the Eagles couldn't find enough avenues to goal as the Wickers ran out the game 16.4 (100) to 7.7 (49) winners, but the likes of Anthony Vella, Kirk Dickson and Corey Ellison were valiant all day.

On a day where the Wickers put in a commanding team effort as they await their next challenge in Narre Warren, Kemperman admitted things clicked for his side.

"We're still looking for our best footy, but that's probably one of our better efforts, particularly in the first half. That set us up, and that level we brought was critical," he said.

"It was a good start to the finals, for sure."

Negating a star studded Cranbourne forward line led by Holt is no easy task, but Kemperman praised his team for its immense defensive efforts, and pointed to a rare goalless first half for the Eagles as a major tick.

"They're incredible with their talent up forward, so we were thrilled with that as a starting point, and to go that far into the game not conceding a goal, I'm pretty rapt with it," he said.

Special praise was deservedly put upon Money, who kicked six of the best on the finals stage. Kemperman isn't surprised.

"He works incredibly hard at training, at goal kicking and on his craft, so it's good to see him get some good reward for effort, and on a big stage as well."

Berwick will now take on minor premiers, Narre Warren, in a semi-final blockbuster at Holm Park on Saturday.

Down at Edwin Flack Reserve, Beaconsfield kept its season alive with a barnstorming elimination final win over Officer, 12.12 (84) to 6.4 (40).

While the Kangaroos were always going to provide some form of challenge, Leigh McQuillen's charges continued to attack and broke away with mightily impressive second and third quarters on Sunday.

There was plenty of heat on the footy early as the Kangaroos looked for a stoppage to stoppage type game, and with Jake Ingaliso locking down on running star Jake Bowd, and gun defender James Waldon looking to negate the influence of Taylor Joyce, it was a sloppy start, and one that kept Doug Koop's side right in the hunt.

Joyce did kick the opening goal of the game after taking a cracking contested mark, but Stephen Hawkins got the crowd going only moments later after slotting a lovely running goal, and at quarter time, all but nothing separated the two sides.

The Eagles broke free almost instantly after a quarter time rev-up, finding their running game off half back, with the likes of Bailey Morrish, Matt Homfray, Riley Verbi and Peter Alier using the ball superbly to give Joyce and Nathan Langley plenty of opportunities to hit the scoreboard.

Missed tackles and turnovers were costly, and the Eagles managed to slam on four second quarter goals to open up a 23-point half time lead, despite a late Kangaroo goal.

But it was the Eagles' third term that was the most impressive, showing a merciless attitude to the contest to slam on another five unanswered majors, drawing out to a 55 point three quarter time lead.

Impressive midfield-forward Riley Verbi kicked an absolute belter from the pocket at

the Berwick College end to rub some salt into the wounds of the Kangaroos, who were unable to stem the bleeding of what loomed as a painful loss.

Knowing his side had lost the game, Doug Koop's final address to his players was profound, urging them to just "do something" to show they belong at this club.

He can hang his hat on knowing his side fought it out, winning the last quarter by 11 points, with encouraging performances by Tyler Clark, Ingaliso, Will Hanson and young Lachlan Ward a major tick.

But it's now season over for Koop's men, and for Leigh McQuillen's side, it may be the start of something special ahead of a semi-final against Cranbourne on Sunday.

Burras claim finals victory

By Hayley Wildes and Nick Creely SOUTHERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION 2 - FINALS ROUND 1 After finishing on top of the ladder, the Doveton Eagles earned the week off, but will return to action on Saturday against Highett at Jack Barker Oval.

Keysborough returned to form in their elimination final against Caulfield on Sunday, cruising to a 17.9 (111) to 6.14 (50) win. The Burras led at every break and never looked troubled with the potent forward line duo of Matthew Carnelley (six goals) and Chris Bryan (four goals) running riot.The Burras will face Murrumbeena in a semi final clash at Ross Street Reserve on Sunday.

DIVISION 3 - ROUND 18 Springvale Districts locked up top spot with a massive win over Hallam, 17.18 (120) to 5.5 (35).

An eight-goal to one third term did the damage as Lachlan Morrey (five goals) ran riot for the Demons. The Hawks - who finish the season without a win - were outclassed, but Daniel Gentile battled hard all day.

Heatherton's season came to close with a loss to Black Rock on the road. Heatherton fell behind early and was unable to find its way back into the contest, falling 15.12 (102) to 8.12 (60). Cameron Moon and Reagan Maddaford were best in a disappointing day for the team.

Hampton Park wrapped up a second position finish and sent a message to the rest of the league on the eve of finals with a comprehensive win over the third-placed Endeavour Hills.

The Redbacks opened up a four-goal advantage at quarter-time and came away with a 14.9 (93) to 5.10 (40) win.

Aaron Holden, Taylor Rainey and Luke Nunan were sublime for Hampton Park, while Nathan Strom and Daniel Batson were in fine form the Falcons.

Noble Park's impressive late-season form continued with another win - its fourth in the last five games of the season. The Bulls kicked six goals to one in a brutal final term to run out 14.6 (90) to 11.12 (78) winners. Ryan Morrison was best for the Bulls and Ali Zijai kicked four goals.

The Hillmen were inaccurate all day, but it didn't matter in the end, with the grand final bound side overturning a quarter time deficit to win comfortably in the end.

And Langwarrin advances through to a preliminary final after dominating Karingal at RJ Rowley Reserve, 14.10 (94) to 8.7 (55).

The Kangaroos were never headed after taking in a 22-point half time lead, with an eight goal to five final half.

Stingrays make it 11 TAC Cup victories in succession

By Hayley Wildes The Dandenong Stingrays will enter the TAC Cup finals as the team to beat, riding an unbelievable 11-game winning streak after taking care of the Sandringham Dragons in the final round of the home and away season on Saturday.

The Rays put the game to bed in the first half as their defence - which has been stifling all season - once again proved too much for the opposition, holding the Dragons to just one first-half goal.

While the defence was impressive, three goals in the opening 10 minutes of the game - via Finlay Bayne, Bailey Williams and captain

Campbell Hustwaite - had Sandringham immediately on the back foot.

The second quarter was more of the same as Sam Sturt kicked his first major of the day, before Bayne and Williams booted their second goals of the contest.

Having put on three goals in the second term and holding the Dragons to a solitary behind, the Rays held a comprehensive 33-point lead at the main break.

The likes of Matthew Cottrell and Matthew Gahan were asserting themselves on the contest, while Hustwaite was his usual dominant self around the ground.

The Dragons came out fighting in the third quarter and with three minutes remaining,

the Stingrays had kicked just two goals for the term.

But as good teams do, Dandenong made Sandringham pay for a small lack in concentration as the Rays, through Cottrell and Lachlan McDonnell, slammed on two goals in the final three minutes of the quarter.

At three-quarter time, Dandenong's lead was 46 points.

The fourth quarter was filled with freeflowing football as the game started to open up. Both teams booted four goals for the term with Stephen Cumming kicking two, while Sturt and Bayne converted their third majors for the day.

Dandenong claimed the win, 14.9 (93) to

6.10 (46), and officially took out the minor premiership. Cottrell was instrumental for the Stingrays, while the trio of Sturt, Bayne (three goals each) and Williams (two goals) were dangerous all day up forward.

Gahan played another fine game off halfback and Hustwaite was a monster at stoppages.

The Stingrays finish the home and away season with an incredible record of 15-1, having not lost a game since April. It was a truly remarkable season and, with finals ahead, there is plenty to look forward to in September.

The Demons falter on the eve of finals

By Hayley Wildes After an incredible 12-game winning streak, the Casey Demons will enter the VFL finals on the back of two consecutive losses after falling to Williamstown on Saturday.

In what was a rare perfect day for footy at Casey Fields, the first half lived up to the hype as both teams had a real crack and played some great football.

After 16 minutes of back and forth play, Cam Pedersen booted the first major of the day with a beautiful set shot kick from 45 metres out. Williamstown quickly responded with their first goal of the day.

Pedersen kicked his second goal later in the term, before Jeff Garlett put the afterburners on chasing down Jack Charlestown and converted the set shot to have the Demons 13 points up. berwicknews.starcommunity.com.au

Williamstown hit back in the middle stages of the second quarter with three goals in four minutes to claim a seven-point lead. With work to do before half-time, Garlett delivered two crucial goals and a Jay Lockhart special, in which he turned his opponent inside out, had Casey five points up.

A momentum-killing Williamstown goal with a minute to play saw the Demons trail by one-point at half time.

The next 60 minutes of football was completely dominated by Williamstown as the Seagulls kicked 10 of the next 12 goals. Michael Gibbons was sublime, while Nick Rodda was a force inside 50.

Pedersen and Garlett kicked the final two goals of the game to put some respectability on the scoreboard, but it was far too late as Williamstown ran out winners, 17.12 (114) to 12.13 (85).

Jay Lockhart (23 disposals) and Corey Wagner (21 disposals) battled hard and Cam Pedersen (three goals) - as he has been all season - was brilliant in an array of roles, while Jeff Garlett (four goals) was impressive up forward.

Despite the loss, Casey (14-4) finished the season in second position and will host Geelong in a qualifying final at Casey Fields on Saturday from 2.10pm in what promises to be an enthralling battle.

For Casey, the side must rediscover its defensive identity. Having only conceded over 90 points once in the opening 19 rounds of the season, that defensive mindset has gone missing in the past two weeks resulting in scores against of 91 and 114.

A win will see the Demons host a home preliminary final after a week off, while a loss will see them return to Casey Fields next week in a must-win semi final.
