Simplot workers were delivered a sharp blow this morning, after the manufacturing giant announced the proposed closure of the Pakenham facility on Wednesday 22 August. A local employee, who asked for his name to be withheld, said his future now hangs in the balance after the surprise disclosure. "We have just been told that the factory might be closing next year," he said. "We haven't been given any definite dates or details about when it might be closing, but by the sounds of things the whole thing is going. I guess I'll have to wait to find out the dates before I start looking for another job. "This is another huge manufacturing blow to Victoria." Another employee, who also wished to remain anonymous, said there had been rumours circulating the factory for a number of months. "This has been rumoured for a while, because the contract hadn't been renewed yet," he said. "But it wasn't properly known until now; I think it's still sinking in for everyone. "It's going to cost a lot of people their jobs, and most of the workers are locals. Some have been working here for almost 50 years." The 23-year-old shifted to the Pakenham factory after General Mills - the manufacturer Latina, Betty Crocker and Old El Paso brands closed down its Mount Waverly facility in 2016. "It's a big loss for Pakenham," he said. Cardinia’s pitch for housing By Rowan Forster A parcel of land adjoining Pakenham's flagship soccer facility is set to be sold by Cardinia Shire for a cluster of privately-owned social housing units. Councillors pitched the sale of 2953 square metres at Reserve 3, Cumberland Drive - in a bid to help alleviate the "chronic shortage" of affordable accommodation across the region. It adjoins the multi-million dollar IYU facility. Research conducted by council revealed the site would be suitable for the development of single and two-bedroom units to house those living with a disability. Disabled carer Martina Hayfield said it would serve as a much-needed "shot in the arm" for a resource that is not only lacking in Cardinia, but across the wider Melbourne area. "It's sad to see the councils are forced to pick up the deficit left by the State Government - especially with rate capping as prevalent as it is in Victoria," she said. "Even if it only makes a difference for a couple dozen people in the community, it will relieve pressure for a range of community groups." It comes just months after the release of a highly critical Upper House inquiry into the Public Housing Renewal Program, which revealed there were 57,877 adults and 24,622 children waiting for social housing in June, 2018 The Dandenong office for the Department of Human Services - which also serves Pakenham, Berwick and Cranbourne - saw the highest demand across Victoria. While 4174 people are waiting for Casey and Cardinia properties on the Victorian Housing Register, several thousand more are expected to be waiting on the older community housing database.

"I'm really supportive of increasing the housing stock for people with a disability," he said. "If the State Government is not going to come to the table and improve housing stock, at least our council is trying to make a difference.
Cr Owen questioned Cardinia Shire's CEO, Garry McQuillan, as to why the land was being sold - as opposed to being leased by public housing entities. "(While) in discussions with various providers of disability services, it has been clearly indicated they have a strong preference to buy the land off council and not lease it," he said.
"They can use it as an asset to draw money on in the future." The land is already zoned for residential use, valued at approximately $950,000. It will now proceed to a public advertisement stage. Should objections be received, Cardinia Shire will hold a panel to hear the grievances.

Storm runoff risk warning By Kyra Gillespie The Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) has warned residents to be vigilant about block drains and waterways this winter. EPA Southern Metro Manager Marleen Mathias said with winter weather battering the state, there was a high risk of increased sediment runoff across new residential and commercial subdivisions. Clearing and levelling land strips it of groundcover and plants that naturally hold the soil together so it’s easy for the top layers of soil to be washed away in a downpour, she said. “It may just look like mud, but high levels of sediment in waterways can kill aquatic plants, interfere with fish and frog breeding, and, in extreme cases, smother the underwater habitat, suffocating fish and many smaller waterborne-species,” Ms Mathias said. “The sediment also catches in low-lying areas, clogging drains, and probably getting your new neighbours offside.”
Ms Mathias said, as with most winter ailments, prevention was better than cure. “All property developers need to be mindful of their potential impact on the environment,” she said. “New residential and commercial developments are occurring all over the state so if everyone has the attitude of ‘it’s only a little bit’, it will really take its toll. “Careful design and efficient construction sequences can minimise site disturbance as well as save money. Clear only the necessary areas, preserve as much grass as possible and schedule clearing to occur as close to the beginning of construction as possible. “I’d encourage all property and building companies to brush up on their knowledge and be aware of best practice methods at epa.vic.gov.au. “I’d also encourage new land owners to be vigilant and active in the development of their block.

Grandparents are all class By Brendan Rees Nan and pop have been treated to a fun day out at Tooradin Primary School. Students welcomed their grandparents through their school gates where they enjoyed classroom activities including a quiz, cooking homemade pasta sauce and sharing stories of school life on Thursday 15 August. The kids also took the time to bake some tasty treats during their cooking classes to celebrate the annual Grandparent's Day event. Teacher Rachel Davis said some grandparents even got to help planting in the school vegetable garden as a part of student's gardening classes. "The children were very excited to show art displays and work samples that were on display and provide their Grandparents with a warm cup of homemade lentil soup on a cold winter's day," she said. "Thank you to all our wonderful grandparents and friends who came to school and we hope they enjoyed the morning as much as we did."

Supermarket dignity drive
By Jessica Anstice The Kokoda Track has been on Berwick's Michael Molloy and David Mounsey's bucket list for several years, so when the Association of Financial Advisers (AFA) decided to coordinate this trek they decided to jump on board. The AFA Foundation also supports a number of charities including Legacy, The Black Dog Institute, MS Organisation and the Make a Wish Foundation, and the two men thought these organisations were very worthy recipients of the publics' very kind donations. They have also decided to walk the 96km Kokoda trek in honour of our WWII heroes who went over to Papua New Guinea as young men and women to defend the country from the Japanese infiltration back in 1942. This trek will be led by Brian Freeman, world adventurer and founder of the carrying 41 Tribute which raises awareness of veteran suicide and PTSD. There are 12 trekkers together with 25 support staff and porters (Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels) going on this trek. Mr Molloy has previously done the 100km Oxfam walk through the Dandenong's which took about 24 hours to complete. "It was very gruelling, but I think this Kokoda trek will be a lot harsher due to the humidity and very steep harsh terrain," Mr Molloy said. "The 96km Kokoda trek will take us approximately seven days to complete and our only goal is to finish." Initially the 12 trekkers set a target of $40,000 for the four charities noted, but the support from the public has been overwhelming and the current amount donated to date has been $97,000. Their new target has been set at $100,000 with less than a week to go, so we urge you to get on to the links outlined below and donate generously to the MS Organisation, a charity dear to their hearts. "The reason David and I have chosen the

"With all the negative press at the moment about Financial Institutions and Advisers at the Royal Commission enquiry, I hope the public can see some of the positives and good things that our industry gives back to very worthy charitable organisations outlined," Mr Molloy said. "So in finishing our trekking party will be leaving for Papua New Guinea this Friday, 24 August to complete this walk for our very worthy causes." Cardinia residents can donate sanitary items to national charity Share the Dignity at Coles supermarkets to assist women in need. During the month of August, products donated at Coles stores at Lakeside Boulevard, Heritage Springs, Pakenham Place and Cardinia Lakes will be distributed to women in a range of situations including those who are homeless, fled domestic violence or are disadvantaged. Share the Dignity was established in 2015 to provide sanitary products to homeless and atrisk women in Australia and has since distributed more than 1.2 million packets of sanitary items. Coles State General Manager Mark O'Connor said Coles wanted to support such a worthy cause at all stores across Victoria. "Coles is delighted to partner with Share the Dignity to help support women in need. Every donation made by local communities during the month of August will help the charity continue to make a real difference to women who are facing hardship," he said. Before you embark on a campaign to ’Unblock the Gridlock’, (Berwick Star News, Thursday, 16 August), perhaps you/we need to correctly identify the most major road in the region! The Monash Freeway ENDS at Princes Highway in Narre Warren, from there it is called the Princes Freeway (East) all the way to and past Nar Nar Goon, towards Traralgon. Once we can all agree on that fact, perhaps we can then consider what needs to be done. I have always said that the Princes Freeway should have had an extra third lane both ways from Clyde Road to at least Kooweerup Road. Secondly, I have always said that the diamond interchange at the intersection of the Princes Freeway and the Princes Highway and the O’Shea Road non-extension east from Soldiers Road, should also be completed. Once these main roads are completed you can then work on the many other roads that either need building or duplicating. These would include building in part and duplicating, Glasscocks Road from the Western Port Highway all the way through to Clyde Road, to give a second east-west option to Thompsons Road. Building the Cranbourne bypass, which has been on the drawing board for more than 40 years! Duplicating Hallam South Road from the Princes Highway to Pound Road and also duplicating Pound Road from Hallam Road through to Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road. Duplicating Greaves Road and O’Shea Road from the Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, all the way through to the Princes Freeway diamond intersection and duplicating the Narre Warren Road south from Thompson’s Road through to the Cranbourne bypass referred to above, which should be duplicated all the way to the South Gippsland Highway, along what is currently Cameron Street. While these above suggestions are really only playing catch-up, there are still more local roads that also clearly need attention as well. Terry Walsh, Narre Warren South.

On 21 August, the Cranbourne Star News Facebook page shared a story about a Cranbourne resident declaring war with Casey Council over their failure to empty his wheelie bin, sending them a $20 bill. Here is how our readers recated online: Christopher Emolution Brent: What a joke he probably forgot to put it out on time or put it somewhere the truck couldn't get at the council doesn't owe him shit he chose to take the bin to the tip instead of contacting Casey council to arrange to have his bin emptied or discuss why it wasn't collected. Christopher Emolution Brent: Probably expected the truck to come out just to empty his bin. He isn't the only person who has missed bin day or for whatever reason his bin hasn't been collected but he expects the council to reimburse him for him choosing to go to the tip when anyone else would have had the common sense to call the council but no he didn't. Leanne Woodman: Very occasionally trucks forget our little court. All I had to do was ring the council and they came within 12 hours and emptied the bins. Council want to take all the praise for getting a crossing across Pound Road near the Seniors Club. It’s all lies, the River Gum councillors didn’t know about a crossing the Seniors Club have been fighting for 18 years but got nowhere. My wife Angela who was the secretary came and told me they were getting nowhere so I took it up with my local MP and that got the ball rolling. Work is due to start this month. D. The worst roads in my area are Shrives Road and Pound Road from the Hallam Road lights to Vanessa Drive.
Advocate for housing It would be good if our councils and papers somehow were able to advocate for, or do something to advocate for, including Social or Commission Housing in the growth of this area. There is a waiting list for such housing and it doesn’t assist or help these people to have increasingly expensive homes for sale in the area. Pound Road between the hours from 5.10am to 9am going west and from 3.30pm to 6.30pm going east is chaos every day plus it's made worse just past the Hallam Road lights where the road goes from three lanes into one lane. Traffic would be a lot better if Casey Council and VicRoads pulled their socks and reopened Central Road from Shrives Road to Hallam road just get the creek bridge repaired and put traffic lights at Hallam Road. It would take a lot of traffic away from Shrives Road because drivers on Fullard Road could go on Central Road and not turn left onto Shrives Road; Central road was closed because the creek bridge was unsafe. Ms Nanthie has a vision to drive the group into the future and to ensure that their directive to promote peace harmony and understanding are met. As vice-president last financial year Ms Burgstahler helped introduce an annual fee of $10 per household to boost their membership. "This not only assisted with funding but created a greater sense of ownership and commitment amongst the group. We also introduced a mix of day and night time meetings to ensure all ages, all demographics, can attend." Ms Burgstahler also said the wording of the Multi-Faith Statement, which is read out during council meetings will also be changed, to make it more inclusive of the entire community

Tickets ($120 per person) for the fundraiser dinner can be purchased via the ACE Foundation Facebook page. Cost includes food, alcohol and entertainment. The night will run from 6pm to midnight.

Get ready to revisit an era of neon leggings, big hair and bold colours in what's shaping up to be a big fundraiser party in Cranbourne. Assisting Casey Education (ACE) Foundation, which provides a helping hand to disadvantaged students across Casey, is inviting the community to step back in time for an 80s themed event at Cranbourne Turf Club on Saturday 20 October. Money raised will go towards children to overcome hurdles in their educational pursuits by providing free eye tests with optometrists in Casey, meal replacement drinks and reading books. Live and silent auctions will take place throughout the night with a treasure trove of donated items and experiences up for grabs. The foundation's chair, Dr Leon Shapero, said the night will be perfect for guests to light up their dancing shoes and help raise money to improve the lives of young people. "We have about 100 different silent auction items for bidding on but we also have some public auction items," he said. "The main public auction item for bidding is two business class return tickets to London provided by Singapore Airlines. They're valued between $13000 and $14000. "We can say hand on heart that every dollar that we get in reaches a child," he said. More than 450 children have been provided with glasses since the Foundation's free eye testing program started two years ago. "It's so easy for kids to fall off the radar and not be able to see well," Dr Shapero said. Members of the Foundation also visit schools across Casey once a month to deliver

Traffic jams drive strife By Jessica Anstice Soldiers Road in Berwick is causing havoc for drivers trying to commute to and from work and to and from schools. Berwick resident Sven Kerslake said during school hours Soldiers Road is heavily congested due to overpopulation and people trying to use it to avoid Berwick's Clyde Road or Kangan Drive. "From Narre Warren South to Dandenong South for work, for example, takes 15 to20 minutes in regular traffic and anywhere between 45 on a good run or one hour to an hour 20 on a bad run," he said. "I would like to see better infrastructure in our small inner suburbs but it is hard to do this without destroying more land which is never great, but what do you do with this mess that they've made? "No wonder everyone is moving further out." Mr Kerslake added he would also like to see stricter policies for international licenses used in Australia and he agrees with the tough policies on drink driving. Eden Rise Estate Berwick resident Earl Mumford travels into the city on his motorcycle most days. He said he can travel to the city in 50 minutes via motorcycle during peak hours. "The trains are often replaced by buses and it took me 1.5 hours via the bus, train debacle," he said. "There are a number of houses for sale around the proposed Minta Farm estate off Soldiers Road. If you cannot get to work in a timely manner this has social and family time consequences." Mr Mumford said he suspects travel stress

"Traffic congestion should not be used as an excuse for family violence, indeed, family violence is likely to be present before stress due to traffic congestion," Together We Can's collective impact facilitator Fiona Cost said."Family violence occurs when a perpetrator exercises power and control over another person. It involves coercive and abusive behaviours designed to intimidate, humiliate, undermine and isolate. "People who get stressed in traffic, particularly with children in the car, may benefit from talking to someone who can support them to identify stress triggers and how best to respond in stressful situations." Mr Mumford said his motorcycle is the only reliable way to get to the CBD. "Soldiers road is ridiculous," he said. "Travelling south to north from Clyde to Berwick could take a car 30 to 40 minutes at 8:30 on weekdays." Men, look after your mates By Russell Bennett One key message came through loud and clear when close to 500 men came together for the fifth annual Cardinia Casey Biggest Ever Blokes Lunch at the Cardinia Cultural Centre in Pakenham on Friday: Look after yourself, and look out for your mates. A record crowd posted a record profit for the event, with $130,000 raised in the afternoon for prostate cancer research and awareness, as well as local men’s health initiatives. That takes the total raised over the event’s five-year history to $460,000. Organising committee chairman Garry Howe was thrilled with the success of the event. Mr Howe said it was not all about the money and that attracting that many men in the room to talk about their health issues was a greater achievement. “Blokes are generally not good at looking after themselves and getting to the doctor to have a check-up,” he explained. “I think a lot more are aware of their health now that we’ve been lecturing them for a few years and hopefully the local clinics are seeing a bit more of them now.” The huge crowd - the biggest to ever attend the event at the Cultural Centre - heard from Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia’s state chief executive John Strachan, Berwick-based urologist Shekib Shahbaz and local prostate cancer survivors Roger McGill and Troy Apthorpe. Mr McGill, in his 70s, spoke about just how close he came to losing his life through his battle with the disease, and emphasised the importance of regular check-ups. “I was a bit unlucky - they did lose me on the (operating) table but that doesn’t happen to everyone, don’t worry about that, and they brought me back,” he said.
“I did have a very aggressive cancer.” Mr Apthorpe also spoke of his own battle, having been diagnosed in his 40s. “The biggest thing I was told after I was diagnosed was to get the message out there, and the message is we all find time to catch up with our mates, or go to work, or get our kids to footy - please take the time once a year on your way home or on your way to work, or even take a sickie, to go and get a check-up,” he said. “It’s that simple. I’m 50-years-of-age in November, and I’m pretty lucky ... I probably shouldn’t be sitting here today.” The men’s health message was also rammed home by keynote speaker, Essendon Football Club legend James Hird. He spoke of his mental health struggles through a particularly tumultuous past five years as football’s ‘supplements saga’ engulfed not only the game and the club he loved, but also his own private life. “I don’t know how many people here have been through depression, or had a brother, a sister, a wife, a mother, a daughter, a father or a friend who’s been through it - but it’s the worst illness you could get,” he said. “I got my face smashed in Perth and got 10 metal plates through here and I almost lost my eye in 2002 from this knock, and I thought that was the most horrendous pain I could go through. “I’d go through that every day of the week before I’d go through the depression I went through. “If you know anybody (battling mental health issues), or you’re there yourself, you’ve got to rely on people and if you know people in that position go and help them - talk to them. They probably won’t ring you back. They won’t respond to you because they’re in such a dark place, but you have to help and keep contacting, and contacting, and contacting them.”

This mum means business By Jessica Anstice Berwick mum Carmen Williams, 33, has been selected as a finalist for the 2018 AusMumpreneur Awards in the service category with her business, Strategic Action Consulting. It all started with a nose ring. Living a conservative life by 'other' people's rules is the way many people live including Ms Williams until she decided to throw out this rule book and ignore the limits. Having just found out that her mum was dying she unearthed an increased appreciation for the value to time. This combined with the emergence of the rebel within Ms Williams agonised over the decision to get a nose ring. She weighed up all the pros and cons, asked for people's opinion, and stressed about it before she did it. Some people had opinions but she found that she could handle this with ease. With her nose ring in place she continued to attend a course, where she not only learnt coaching skills but cultivated a strong belief that she could do anything that she put her mind to. Surprisingly to everyone including herself and her teacher, she secured her first client. Now she was a business woman. Feeling so revved up from the last couple of day of the course, her new nose ring and a client under her wing, she commenced the walk from the car park into work. This heavy feeling came over her she even forgot her password to the computer and she realised that now was the time.
She called her director and negotiated to walk out at lunch time that day. When she told her colleagues, they said that they didn't know she was going, she said that until that morning she didn't either. It took her longer to decide to get a nose ring. Ms Williams has since gone on to establish a profitable business transforming health care for the community, opened her mind up to new possibilities, ran a half marathon, surrounded herself with friends and mentors and showed her children that anything is possible. The AusMumpreneur Awards recognise Australian Mums in business achieving outstanding success. "Being selected as a finalist means so much to me because I love being a woman who is running a thriving business and raising two thriving children," Ms Williams said. "Although I have very strong internal motivation, it is nice to receive some external validation every once in a while. "I appreciate the recognition and would like to use it as a platform to demonstrate to other aspiring Mumpreneurs what is possible." Ms Williams said if someone had told her at the start of last year that she was going to run her own consulting firm that was transforming the health industry she would have laughed at them. "When I found out I was a finalist, I was excited to me recognised but also sad that my mum wasn't there to celebrate," she said. "I was nominated by Maureen Pound, who is an amazing coach who now teaches others.

Short rental crack down The Australian Taxation Office is launching an extensive data-matching program to identify taxpayers receiving income from short term rentals. Information from online platform sharing sites for around 190,000 Australians will be examined to identify taxpayers who have left out rental income and over-claimed deductions. Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson said the ATO is aware that some taxpayers are not declaring all their short-term rental income and “therefore we are launching an extensive data matching program to identify taxpayers who have left out income or over claimed deductions“. “The availability of short-term rentals has exploded thanks to the online revolution, and there is evidence that some taxpayers don’t understand their taxation obligations,“ Ms Anderson said. “The ATO will now source information from online rental platforms and match it against
the information included in tax returns. This new data complements data the ATO has been obtaining for some time in relation to longterm rentals. “Where a discrepancy is identified, the taxpayer will be given the opportunity to explain and if necessary, lodge an amendment. “While improvements in technology are helping people find ways to make extra money,
technology is also assisting the ATO to obtain and analyse large sets of data to identify noncompliance. “As well as looking for undeclared income, we will use the information to identify taxpayers who use sharing economy platforms to list a property that they actually have no intention of renting out, so that they can claim deductions that they are not entitled to.“

Family favourite for dad Spaghetti bolognese is a family favourite and perfect for the kids to make for dad this Father’s Day. However, instead of using traditional beef mince,why not change it up a bit with pork mince. Add onion, celery, carrot, spices and tomotoes and you have a meal that is not only delicious but also healthy. Ingredients 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 brown onion, finely chopped 1 celery stick, finely chopped 1 large carrot, peeled and finely chopped 500g pork mince 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 tablespoon tomato paste 750g jar tomato passata sauce 2 bay leaves ¼ cup basil leaves, chopped 400g spaghetti grated parmesan and basil leaves, to serve

Method 1. Heat oil in a large non-stick frying pan over medium-high heat. 2. Add onion, celery and carrot. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes or until softening. 3. Add pork mince and garlic. Cook, stirring with a wooden spoon to break up any lumps, for 5 minutes or until mince changes colour. 4. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 1 minute. 5. Stir in tomato passata and bay leaves. Bring to the boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 45 minutes. 6. Uncover and simmer until sauce thickens slightly. 7. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Serve dad delicious pork spaghetti bolognese this Father's Day. 8. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti in a large saucepan of boiling water following packet directions or until al dente.
9. Drain spaghetti. Toss spaghetti through the Bolognese sauce. 10. Sprinkle with parmesan and basil leaves and serve.

Zumba for farmers By Jessica Anstice Carmen Get Fit is holding a Zumbathon to raise money for our Aussie farmers on Friday 24 August at Hillcrest Christian College in Clyde North. "I have been seeing the effects this drought has been having on our Aussie farmers through the media over the past few months and it's heartbreaking," event organiser Carmen Charlton said. ""These people work so tirelessly and are doing it so tough through no fault of their own, which made me wish there was something I could do. "It really does seem helpless when you feel like 'just one person'; like anything you do won't be enough." Ms Charlton said her husband suggested
they make a donation. "Again it seemed like such a drop in the ocean, although every dollar counts," she said. "Therefore we decided that perhaps I should hold a zumba masterclass so we can make a bigger donation and involve the community in a fun activity while doing so." Ms Charlton has been teaching zumba in the City of Casey for over eight years, and in that time she has held many fundraisers for various charities. "It's a such a fun thing to do and exercise that doesn't feel like exercise," she said. "It's always a fun event that anyone can join in with. All ages, all fitness levels, male, female; there is no coordination required if you're will-

Two trapped Emergency services responded to a two-car collision in Narre Warren on Friday, 17 August. It is believed a car was turning right onto Princes Highway from Lauderdale Road when it was struck by an oncoming vehicle about 10pm. A man and woman in the turning vehicle were trapped for some time and taken to hospital in a serious condition, however the extent of their injuries is not known at this stage. The driver and sole occupant of the other car, a 24 year old Officer man, sustained minor injuries. The exact cause of the collision is yet to be established and the investigation is ongoing. Service with a smile Dr Robert Panjkov established Beaconsfield Dental 30 years ago in 1988. Now, three decades on and a new location later, he works alongside his wife Lisa, their two daughters Melissa and Jacinta, and an experienced team of dentists. In 2015, Beaconsfield Dental made the exciting move to new state-of-the-art facilities. But the move - which took the team from a two-chair practice to a seven dental room practice - required some more hands on deck. “Up until the new practice I had been behind the scenes,” Lisa said, who is now the practice manager. “I used to manage everything at home - it was smaller but now we have a large team and it’s a lot more work. Warriors overrun by Blues By Hayley Wildes With the Pakenham Warriors Youth League 2 men kicking off their grand final series against Frankston and the women also taking on Frankston for a grand final berth, it was all on the line on Saturday night. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be for the gallant Big V Warriors, who both fell in tough losses to the Blues. The Youth League 2 men entered grand final game one riding an 11-game winning streak and in front of a vocal home crowd at Cardinia Life, got off to a stirring start. The Warriors brought the energy they’ve become known for and Lee Belton got off to a hot start with 10 first-quarter points, including two corner triples. At the first break, Pakenham led 25-22. The second quarter was intense, but a 9-2 run to end the quarter gave Frankston a 45-42 lead at the main break. The third quarter was when Frankston made their move as they outscored Pakenham 27-15. At every Pakenham comeback attempt, Frankston answered with big buckets of their own to run away 99-78 winners. Lee Belton (18 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists), Tom Greer (16 rebounds, 11 points) and Ned Weideman (14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals) competed hard all night. The Warriors head to Frankston on Saturday night for game two. A win will force a game three on Sunday from 2pm, also at Frankston, while a loss will be season over. Their finals wait is over By Nick Creely When Officer runs onto Edwin Flack Reserve on Sunday, it'll mark 5104 days since their last finals appearance - almost 14 years lost in the wilderness, waiting for a chance to once again be back on the big stage. Sitting on the sidelines in envy for well over a decade, watching opposition teams hold the premiership cup aloft, the Kangaroos have been dealt their fair share of pain in a journey that has certainly tested the fabric of the club. And they simply don't want to just make up the numbers when they break their duck against Beaconsfield - they want to make a statement, and leave no stone unturned as they embark on a new era. They are a club with a rich history, with many stories of success through the 1990's and early 2000's, and want to write another chapter they can be proud of. They are hell bent on proving their worth, and understand the significance of representing the town during a time of the year all players, coaches, support staff and fans eagerly anticipate. "We are a proud club and our return to finals has been a long time coming for everyone involved in the club," Officer president Nick McLennan said. "I couldn't be happier with how our playing group and coaches have attacked this season to bring us to this point, however there is still plenty of football to be played this year and we recognise that we have a huge challenge awaiting us this weekend." The Kangaroos won their last senior premiership in 2002, and their last finals appearance was back in a preliminary final in 2004, when they lost by seven-points against Warragul at Nar Nar Goon in the West Gippsland Latrobe Football League Western Division, in
the final game for premiership coach Steve Pursell, and the Kangaroos' final game before joining the MPNFL. In this particular game, the Kangaroos were well on top at half time, but were overrun in a dominant second half by the Gulls. But nobody could see the club fall away after coming so close to a premiership. Current player and 300 game legend Ben Tivendale was part of that agonising preliminary final defeat 14 years ago, and has stuck fat with the club through thick and thin, and now hopes to reap the rewards. "I'm excited to be playing finals again after 14 years, it's also important for the club and our supporters to see some action at the pointy end of the year," he said. "They deserve this as much as anyone." In what promises to be a fierce clash with the Eagles who have bested them in both matches against one another this season, Tivendale guaranteed his club will take it right up to them as soon as the ball is bounced into the turf. "We're not just here to make up the numbers and I think this weekend we have a real point to prove against one of our oldest rivals," he said. Current coach Doug Koop has built a list stocked with young talent, and has turned the club around quickly. He now hopes his side led by Matthew Clarke - can take the next step and chalk up what would be a memorable win in the club's history. "Last year our aim was to be competitive, this year we set ourselves the goal of playing finals," he said. "It's another step forward in our progression and this weekend presents another opportunity to take a massive step forward with a win." Former president of the club and 1983 reserves premiership player Frank Wyatt is thrilled the Kangaroos are back where they belong, and wants the club to make finals it's "expectation" moving forward.
"It's a great thing for the club, when you think back to the club's glory days, finals was an expectation and something we perhaps took for granted," he said. "Hopefully this is the beginning of bigger and better things for our club." Robert Porter - a past premiership player and coach - echoed the sentiments of Wyatt, and can't wait to see what the modern day Kangaroos can produce on the weekend. "I played in our first ever flag in 1961, coached in late 80's early 90's and witnessed
the 1990's and 2002 flags and I couldn't be more excited to see the boys back in finals again," he said. "It's these sorts of games that really bring the club, players and supporters together."
